Star Trek's Odyssey-Class Enterprise-F Starship Explained

Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard

This weekend, "Star Trek" fans have been hit with a spate of news from New York Comic-Con, where Paramount+ held three panels on Saturday afternoon revealing developments in the series "Discovery," "Prodigy," and "Picard" ( per Variety ). Among the much-talked-about revelations came a new trailer for the third and final season of "Picard," which is bringing back some familiar villains, such as Moriarty (Daniel Davis) and Lore (Brent Spiner) from "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and giving Worf (Michael Dorn) a new pacifist stance .

Those examining the trailer in minute detail noticed another new addition to the "Star Trek" universe: a version of the Enterprise that's not new to die-hard fans but is now making its way onto television screens: the Odyssey-class Enterprise-F starship. If you're up on your "Star Trek" universe details, you know that its predecessor, the Enterprise-E, first appeared in several installments in the 1990s, and its demise was chronicled in the "Star Trek Online" magazine, issue No. 40, in a short story called "Unexpected Honor" by Christine Thompson. This event made way for a new starship, which will be apparently making its first canon appearance. So, what's the story with the Enterprise-F, anyway?

The starship was created as a contest entry for Star Trek Online

Back in 2011, Cryptic Design held a "Design the Next Enterprise" contest that was open to fans. Adam Ihle, a Florida-based sculptor and artist , won the competition with a double-necked Enterprise design that is larger and sleeker than previous iterations of the Enterprise starship, with bows at the neck and nacelles. It's designed to work well in the MMORPG's timeline, which takes place in 2409 during an era in which the Federation is at war with the Klingons, with the Romulans, the Dominion, and the Borg Collective as major players and other empires joining in additional expansions.

StarTrek.com's announcement of the win said, "Adam's sketch inspired us. It created internal discussions about the evolution of the Starfleet Cruiser and how this ship represented a new approach to design that would lead us into the future. The silhouette remains familiar and recognizable, yet the ship offers an evolution in design that adds both beauty and function worthy of the name Enterprise ... We're thrilled to have brought this design to life and feel that the final render elegantly captures in high detail the spirit and flow of Adam's original."

The ship was then revealed in a "Star Trek Online" feature episode from 2012 ( via TrekNews.com ). Given that the ship's design is more than a decade old, it might have been a surprise to Ihle that it has appeared in canon, but he is clearly reveling in the attention the "Picard" announcement has provided. "Don't like the Enterprise F? Well, you can hate it all you want and I'll be over here enjoying being a part of canon Star Trek history," he tweeted yesterday .

The ship's graphics were also rebuilt in 2021 by Thomas Marrone, a Cryptic Studios artist.

The Enterprise F has some impressive specs

According to a fan who analyzed the Enterprise-F's design, you can see both elements of the Enterprise-D and -E in the ship's profile; it has an overall shape and elonged front disc shape borrowed from the Enterprise-E, with a hull design, impulse exhaust ports, main shuttle bay, and a sensor array strip on the ship's saucer section that more closely resembles the Enterprise-D.  YouTuber Junkball also points out that the main body of the saucer section has an hourglass section that resembles that of the Enterprise-J, a ship introduced from a possible future in the third season of "Star Trek: Enterprise."

According to Giant Freakin Robot , the size of the Enterprise-F is 1,061.1 meters in length and 371 meters in width, which is much larger than the 685-meter-long Enterprise-E. It holds a standard crew of 1,600 with a crew cap of 2,500 and can travel at a maximum warp speed of 9.99. It is equipped with transwarp and slipstream drives. Giant Bomb further reveals that — at least in-game — the ship has four fore and four aft weapons, and five officer stations.

However, although the Odyssey-class ship is being made canon, that doesn't mean every detail of it — including the crew's identities — will be. Hopefully, more will be revealed once "Picard" returns to the Paramount+ streaming service with Season 3 on February 16, 2023.

Celebrating the Ships of the Line: USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E

star trek enterprise class

The U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D was destroyed in the Battle of Veridian III in 2371, but it would not, of course, be the last ship called the Enterprise. The U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E, constructed at the San Francisco Fleet Yards, was launched on stardate 49827.5 in 2372. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and most of his crew from the D returned to crew Starfleet's latest Federation Sovereign-class starship, which had 24 decks and measured 685 meters long.

The E was little more than a year into a series of shakedown operations when it was called into action and participated in what came to be known as the Battle of Sector 001, involving the Borg. Later, Picard's Number One pulled off what came to be referred to as the Riker Maneuver. The ship underwent a refit at one point; the precise date is unknown, but it occurred between 2375 and 2379. Changes include new nacelle pylons, additional phaser arrays and aft-facing photo torpedo tubes, upgraded bridge consoles, etc. Five more decks were added as well and the ship was equipped with an Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH). The E later underwent another extensive refit and repair job following damage it sustained for a violent clash with Shinzon and his ship the Scimitar; during that conflict the Enterprise actually rammed directly into the Scimitar. As of 2379, the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E was still on active duty. StarTrek.com 's look at the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E continues our ongoing celebration of the Ships of the Line, which will carry on from now until the end of the year. The latest in the bestselling Ships of the Line calendar series is available now; visit www.Amazon.com to purchase the 2015 Ships of the Line calendar.

How Many Five Year Missions Did Star Trek's Enterprise Have?

  • Captain James T. Kirk led two legendary five-year missions aboard the USS Enterprise, showcasing groundbreaking leadership.
  • Captain Robert April's lesser-known five-year stint aboard the starship remains largely shrouded in mystery.
  • The Kelvin Timeline brought new twists, with Chris Pine's Captain Kirk never officially finishing his fabled mission.

Star Trek 's USS Enterprise is most famous for its voyagers under Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), but it's unclear how many five-year missions it actually completed. As the flagship of the United Federation of Planets, the entire lifespan of the Constitution Class USS Enterprise NCC-1701 was spent on extensive five-year missions that saw the vessel explore the galaxy in a host of exciting adventures. Several Captains commanded the ship during its service, and newer series like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have shed new light on the Enterprise's five-year missions.

First commissioned under the command of Captain Robert April (Adrian Holmes) in the year 2245, the Starship Enterprise went on successive five-year missions throughout the remainder of the 23rd century until her destruction in 2285 during the events of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . While every Captain of the Enterprise is memorable in their own way, James T. Kirk's time in command was the most well-documented, with many events of the tenures of Captains Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Robert April being a mystery until very recently. Even through retrofits and command changes, the USS Enterprise remained the pinnacle of Starfleet excellence and its legacy was continued by successive starships that bear its name.

Star Trek: Every Version Of The Starship Enterprise

Captain robert april's uss enterprise five-year mission, one five-year mission between 2245 and 2250.

While Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have further fleshed out the life of Captain Christopher Pike, the specifics of Captain Robert April's five-year mission remain largely unknown. Serving only one five-year stint before handing over the reins, April has the distinction of being the original Captain of the Constitution Class Enterprise. April's wife Sarah served as his Chief Medical Officer, while Commander Christopher Pike was his second-in-command. Pike's future Number One, Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), also served aboard April's USS Enterprise, having previously had her application to Starfleet Academy sponsored by Captain April, as revealed by Strange New Worlds.

Captain Robert April was the original name Gene Roddenberry picked when he first conceived Star Trek and his starship was called the USS Yorktown before the name Enterprise was chosen.

Commanding the USS Enterprise from 2245 through 2250, Robert April committed several breaches of General Order One, an early form of Starfleet's Prime Directive , such as his decision in 2246 to warn the Perricans, a pre-warp civilization, about an impending apocalyptic meteor strike. Two years later, Captain April shared Federation technology with another pre-warp civilization to solve a catastrophic drought on the planet Na'rel. In 2250, April was promoted to Fleet Admiral where he continued to work his way up the ladder before eventually having his age reversed in the strange events of the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode "The Counter-Clock Incident."

The older Robert April was voiced by Scotty actor James Doohan in Star Trek: The Animated Series .

Captain Christopher Pike's Five-Year Missions

Three five-year missions between 2250 and 2265.

Captain Christopher Pike commanded the USS Enterprise from 2250 through 2265 , when he was succeeded by James T. Kirk. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes place in the first year of his third and final five-year mission, as Pike grapples with the foreknowledge of his tragic fate. Notable events from Pike's previous five-year missions include the disastrous trip to Rigel VII, the fateful mission to Talos IV, depicted in Star Trek 's original pilot "The Cage", and being kept out of Star Trek: Discovery 's Klingon War.

Strange New Worlds has revealed that Pike and Kirk crossed paths more regularly than previously assumed.

Captain Pike's third five-year mission in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has forced him to confront his tragic future and his past failures on Rigel VII. When he was last seen in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' season 2 finale , Pike was staring down a potential war with the Gorn Hegemony. I t's unclear how Pike's five-year mission will end , but it's known that he will eventually hand over the USS Enterprise to Kirk in 2265. Strange New Worlds has revealed that Pike and Kirk crossed paths more regularly than previously assumed, creating the possibility that Pike could become a mentor to the future Captain Kirk.

Why Kirk Replaced Pike In Star Trek: The Original Series

Captain kirk's five-year missions, two five-year missions between 2265 and 2280.

Captain James T. Kirk needs little introduction to even the least initiated among the Star Trek fandom, and his first five-year mission is the stuff of legend, as chronicled in the events of Star Trek: The Original Series . After taking over command of the USS Enterprise from Captain Pike in 2265, Kirk spent the next five years embarking on a plethora of exciting adventures and did a lot to change the perception of what a Starfleet captain could be. Classic Star Trek: TOS episodes like "Balance of Terror" and "The Doomsday Machine" were fine examples of Kirk's leadership style, and no Enterprise captain has matched his brashness before or since.

Captain James T. Kirk is the youngest Captain of the USS Enterprise.

Star Trek: The Original Series getting canceled in 1969 brought an abrupt end to Kirk's five-year mission, which continued off-screen. Kirk's incredible five-year mission resulted in his promotion to Admiral to become Chief of Starfleet Operations. Picking up a few years after Kirk's initial five-year mission ended, Star Trek: The Motion Picture 's timeline is a bit muddy, but the film takes place sometime in the early 2270s and the V'Ger crisis kicked off Kirk's second five-year mission by placing the Admiral back in the Starship Enterprise's center seat.

The jump forward to 2385 in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan denied fans the chance to see Kirk's Enterprise's mysterious second five-year mission. When Kirk's sequel five-year mission ended around 2275-2280, command was turned over to Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and the Starship Enterprise was largely used for training purposes. The eventual destruction of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek III: The Search For Spock was the end of the line for the legendary Constitution Class starship. Five-year missions continued to be the norm in Starfleet well into the 24th century, but by the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 2364, the USS Enterprise-D had been upgraded to an " ongoing mission " status .

Kirk's Five-Year Mission In The Kelvin Timeline

One five-year mission between 2260 and 2263.

The alternate Kelvin Timeline is the setting of the trilogy of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies that reintroduced the classic characters in a new way. When the Romulan Nero (Eric Bana) traveled from the year 2387 to the year 2233 to stop the eventual supernova of Romulus's sun in Star Trek (2009), he created a splinter reality that has since been called the Kelvin Timeline. Among the changes brought about by the Kelvin Timeline was James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) growing up without a father, which put him on an accelerated trajectory to the USS Enterprise's Captain's chair compared to his Prime Universe counterpart.

In Star Trek 's Kelvin Timeline, the USS Enterprise was launched in 2258 as opposed to the 2245 date of the Prime Timeline . The Kelvin Timeline's Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) therefore never got to command the Starship Enterprise on a five-year mission. Injured by Nero, Pike handed command of the Enterprise to Kirk in the very same year. Despite this, it would be another two years before Kirk would embark upon his five-year mission thanks to the extensive damage caused by confrontations with Nero and Khan Noonien-Singh (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Technically speaking, Chris Pine's Captain Kirk never completed his five-year mission.

Kirk's five-year mission therefore began in 2260 at the end of Star Trek Into Darkness . By 2263, however, the young Enterprise Captain was frustrated with the banality of Starfleet's five-year mission, until the events of Star Trek Beyond gave him a renewed sense of purpose. Technically speaking, Chris Pine's Captain Kirk never completed his five-year mission in Star Trek , as the Enterprise was destroyed at the start of Star Trek Beyond . However, the delays in realizing Star Trek 4 mean that Kirk and the crew could have completed two more five-year missions by the time the long-delayed movie finally hits theaters.

All episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series , Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies are available to stream on Paramount+.

How Many Five Year Missions Did Star Trek's Enterprise Have?

Star Trek Theory: Picard Retconned the Divisive Enterprise Series Finale

One shot of the NX-01 in Star Trek: Picard suggests the Star Trek: Enterprise series finale didn't happen the way fans think - and that may be good.

  • Picard Season 3 slyly changes Star Trek history by introducing an NX-01 redesign, challenging Enterprise's controversial finale.
  • The inclusion of the NX-01 refit in Picard hints at a major retcon in Enterprise's finale, suggesting a different fate for Trip Tucker.
  • The theory that Trip survived the final mission creates a fresh perspective on the Star Trek universe, potentially altering canon.

With all the big action and high emotions in Star Trek: Picard Season 3, fans can be forgiven for missing a detail in Episode 9, "Võx" that could retcon the divisive series finale of Star Trek: Enterprise . The last series of "second-wave" Star Trek , its sudden cancelation led to an ignominious end not just for the show but for that entire era of the franchise.

During Picard Season 3, Episode 6 "The Bounty," a number of ships appeared in the Fleet Museum, including the NX-01 from Enterprise. However, when the heroes returned to the Fleet Museum in "Võx," pop culture critic and YouTuber Jessie Earl noticed something about that early-era Starfleet vessel. Rather than the design seen in the series with a saucer section and two nacelles, it was the "NX-01 refit," a redesign meant to debut in Season 5 if the series hadn't been canceled. This means the new NX-01 is as officially canon as anything in Star Trek can be. Since the NX-01 hadn't been redesigned by Enterprise 's finale, Earl suggested Picard implies that episode was not the true end of the first Enterprise 's mission. This theory is critical because it's about more than which ship was correct; it's about saving the life of a fan-favorite character.

Updated March 18, 2024, by Joshua M. Patton: In the year since Picard's final season debuted, there has been no more information released about what the inclusion of the NX-class refit means to Star Trek canon. So, the notion that "Trip Tucker lives" is still very much in the realm of "fan theory." Yet, the idea the NX-01 Enterprise refit means the ship seen in the series finale is inaccurate is a strong theory. This article has been updated to include more information about the Enterprise finale, "These Are the Voyages" and comport to CBR's current formatting standards.

Why the Star Trek: Enterprise Finale Was Controversial Among the Fans and Cast

The best star trek legacy character returns in 2023.

Star Trek: Enterprise producers tricked UPN into greenlighting a fourth season, so it wasn't really a surprsie the series was canceled that year. While Enterprise was the network's highest-rated show, UPN just didn't have enough reach to bring in the advertising dollars needed to sustain it. Since the finale for this series was going to be the end of an unprecedented 18-year run for Star Trek under Rick Berman, the producer wanted to make "a valentine" to the whole endeavor and the fans , according to a conversation he and Brannon Braga shared on the complete series home release. The only way to bring the 22nd Century cast into the 24th -- without time travel and changing Star Trek canon -- was to use the holodeck. However, this irked many of the Enterprise cast who felt they were being sidelined in their own finale. In another special features conversation, Braga and Bakula discussed the fight they had about this very subject.

Other actors, including Jonathan Frakes, felt uncomfortable with the decision, too, according to The Fifty-Year Mission - The Next 25 Years by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman. Frakes said he agreed because he "always says 'yes'" to Star Trek , and that Scott Bakula was a gentleman on set. "I would have been so insulted. I don't think that was our finest hour," Frakes said. Actor Jeffery Combs, a mainstay in the universe but most notably the Andorrian commander Shran on Enterprise was less charitable. He said he believed Berman's choice to include The Next Generation was a way to remind the studio and the fans that he "had a successful" show in TNG . In the Enterprise special features, Braga apologizes more than once for the finale, though he admits he thought it was a "cool" idea at the time, including the death of Trip Tucker.

Still, the actors held no grudges. Along with Bakula's grace in welcoming the guest stars, the others in the cast spoke highly of their TNG co-stars. On an episode of The Shuttlepod Show with Frakes , former host and Malcom Reed actor Dominic Keating told the Riker actor he enjoyed working with him. He told him "one of the funnest days [he] had shooting [on the series] was with [Frakes] in that galley." While Star Trek is lousy with time-travel, there are no do-overs in real life. However, "The Bounty," may have stealthily retconned the Enterprise finale and Trip's death.

Theory: The Enterprise Finale Was Based on Faulty Historical Information

'keep being noisy': picard star provides star trek: legacy update.

Star Trek: Enterprise ended its voyage in 2005, but the NX-01 refit didn't debut until six years later in Doug Drexler's official Ships of the Line calendar. The redesign added the round deflector dish and body of the ship to the original -- bridging the gap between the NX-01 and the NCC-1701 Enterprise . That this version of the ship was at the Fleet Museum suggests the changes were made before the NX ships were decommissioned. As Earl explains , this means the ship the crew occupied in the finale was not the correct ship. It was a work of historical fiction.

What made the Enterprise finale so divisive was that it was technically an episode of The Next Generation . Riker and his wife Deanna Troi appeared, sharing scenes that take place during TNG Season 7, Episode 12, "The Pegasus." Troi suggested Riker use this holodeck program of the last mission of the original Enterprise to help make a tough decision. While the ship had undergone changes from what viewers were used to seeing, it didn't have an entirely new section. The NX-01 wasn't actually seen in the finale except on display monitors, but there was a scene in its shuttle bay. Since it wasn't redesigned, that suggests the ship in the holodeck program was not the accurate ship .

Earl also pointed out how Riker influenced events when he appeared as the ship's chef -- a character mentioned but never seen during the run of Enterprise . At the end of the episode, the vessel was boarded and Chief Engineer Trip Tucker died saving everyone. However, Earl noted a Star Trek novel called The Good Men Do , by Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin, introduced the idea that Trip faked his death to go on an undercover mission involving Romulans. A simpler retcon of Trip's death is the holodeck program was just historical fiction or somehow inaccurate. Whatever the case, the redesigned ship means the holoprogram could've gotten more things wrong. It's a possibility Troi acknowledged when Riker noted that security officer Malcolm Reed was shorter than he expected.

Why Picard May Have Stealthily Retconned the Enterprise Finale

How liam shaw challenges war veteran tropes in star trek: picard season 3.

Star Trek: Enterprise was the second of the franchise's second-wave series to not be made for syndication. It debuted on the United Paramount Network (UPN), which failed and became half of The CW five years. Brannon Braga, showrunner for most of Enterprise , said in a conversation with the cast on the complete series home release that he regrets the story they told. He was a bit too hard on himself. It was a good episode of Star Trek , it was just a poor series finale for Enterprise . In their last episode, rather than actual human beings with agency, the crew of the NX-01 were just holographic action figures.

In "Võx," Worf made a casual reference to the USS Enterprise -E's destruction by saying, "That was not my fault." Picard showrunner Terry Matalas tweeted that this was essentially a layup for Star Trek novel writers. Perhaps the NX-01 refit inclusion was another or, as Earl suggested, a nod to The Good Men Do . Matalas worked on Enterprise and had an on-camera appearance in the series finale as an Enterprise-D crewman, walking past Troi as she got on a turbolift -- so he may like the Enterprise series finale just as it is.

Since this is all an off-screen story and headcanon, it is possible that the NX-01 refit was a different ship than the first Enterprise . It might be in the Fleet Museum just so Doug Drexler's amazing design made it on-screen just once. Yet if any Star Trek series finale could use a do-over, it's Enterprise , and even the guy who wrote it agrees. As Earl says, this Picard theory is a great way to live life knowing Trip survived the final mission. But, if a fan happens to love the finale? Then it would take more than the appearance of a ship to change that. It's been a long road from Enterprise to Picard , and it's nice the NX-01 refit design got to make the journey.

Star Trek: Picard

Aided by the crew of the U.S.S. Titan, Seven of Nine, and other old friends, Picard makes a shocking discovery that will alter his life forever and puts him on a collision course with the most cunning enemy he's ever encountered.

8 alpha quadrant things star trek: voyager found in delta quadrant.

Despite believing they were the only Alpha Quadrant representatives in the Delta Quadrant, the USS Voyager crew often found they weren't alone.

  • Star Trek: Voyager finds familiar things from the Alpha Quadrant in the Delta Quadrant, sparking important questions and connections.
  • Encounter with Ferengi negotiators leads Voyager crew to stop their interference in a pre-warp civilization for profits.
  • Janeway and crew discover humans abducted by aliens in the 1930s living in the Delta Quadrant, including Amelia Earhart.

For a show with the conceit of being so far from home, Star Trek: Voyager found a surprising number of things in the Delta Quadrant that originated in the Alpha Quadrant, including several from Earth itself. The USS Voyager, commanded by Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), and Commander Chakotay's (Robert Beltran) Maquis raider Val Jean were both brought to the Delta Quadrant in 2371 by the Caretaker (Basil Langton). After Janeway destroyed the Caretaker's array to save the Ocampa , Voyager and the Val Jean were left without a ticket back to the Alpha Quadrant, and banded together to make the long journey.

Finding something familiar in an otherwise totally alien corner of the galaxy brought a sense of familiarity to the USS Voyager crew and viewers at home alike, but the presence of something from the Alpha Quadrant in the Delta Quadrant inevitably raised important questions , like how familiar people and objects traveled 70,000 light years from home in the first place, and whether the find could lead Captain Kathryn Janeway towards a quicker path home to Earth.

Star Trek: Voyager’s 20 Best Episodes Ranked

8 a pair of ferengi negotiators, arridor and kol, star trek: voyager season 3, episode 5 "false profits".

The USS Voyager encounters a pair of Ferengi negotiators, Arridor (Dan Shor) and Kol (Leslie Jordan), who claim to be the prophesied Great Sages of the Takarians, a society with Bronze Age level technology. The Ferengi have no Prime Directive to deter them from interfering with the Takarians' development , so they're performing "miracles" with a standard replicator to reap the monetary benefits of the Takarians' worship. Voyager's crew know the Ferengi reputation well enough to know they're no Sages, so they must figure out how to put a stop to Arridor and Kol's grift.

"False Profits" serves as a Star Trek sequel episode to Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3, episode 8 "The Price", as Voyager catches up with Arridor and Kol (formerly played by J. R. Quinonez) seven years after their Delta Quadrant arrival. The Ferengi took a test flight through the supposedly stable wormhole near Barzan II, which was supposed to emerge in the Gamma Quadrant, but instead stranded the Ferengi in the Delta Quadrant, where they made the best of their situation as only Ferengi can.

Star Trek: Voyager Season 3, Episode 23 "Distant Origin"

"Distant Origin" opens on Forra Gegen (Henry Woronicz), a scientist who discovers that his people, the Voth, share certain genetic similarities with the humans aboard the USS Voyager. While this confirms Gegen's theory that the Voth are the descendants of a species brought to their homeworld millions of years ago , religious leader Minister Odala (Concetta Tomei) refuses to accept the truth. Even with Commander Chakotay present as a living specimen of humanity, Odala pushes Gegen to recant, because Gegen's theory goes against the Voth Doctrine that keeps Odala in power.

After meeting Gegen's assistant, Tova Veer (Christopher Liam Moore), Janeway and the Doctor use the holodeck as a research guide to extrapolate how hadrosaurs might look in the 24th century if they'd been able to evolve into a humanoid form with comparable intelligence. The result resembles Veer, so Janeway and the Doctor conclude, like Gegen, that the Voth evolved from hadrosaurs into a highly advanced species on Earth , then fled to the Delta Quadrant in spacefaring vessels instead of being wiped out with the other dinosaurs.

6 The Friendship One Probe

Star trek: voyager season 7, episode 21 "friendship one".

By Star Trek: Voyager season 7 , the USS Voyager is in regular contact with Starfleet Command, and Starfleet gives Voyager a mission to retrieve a 21st-century Earth probe, Friendship One . The probe proves difficult to find, but once discovered on an alien planet suffering devastating climate collapse, the implications of Friendship One's launch become clear. Besides the irreversible damage to the planet's climate, the inhabitants are all suffering from radiation sickness, and bear understandable hostility towards Earth, because the aliens believe humans orchestrated their destruction with the Friendship One probe.

The United Earth Space Probe Agency was one of the early names for the organization the USS Enterprise belongs to in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "Charlie X".

Friendship One was launched in 2067 by the United Earth Space Probe Agency with the intention of making friends with whomever found it, as the name implies. Although Friendship One, the 400-year-old Earth probe, traveled for centuries carrying messages of peace, musical recordings, and ways to translate languages, the people who discovered Friendship One in the Delta Quadrant took a greater interest in the antimatter it used to travel across space. Without the proper knowledge of its use, antimatter proved devastating to the planet and its people, resulting in death and disease for generations.

5 Dreadnought, a Cardassian Missile

Star trek: voyager season 2, episode 17 "dreadnought".

The USS Voyager discovers a dangerously powerful, self-guided Cardassian missile in the Delta Quadrant, which Lt. B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson) recognizes as one nicknamed "Dreadnought" . When B'Elanna was with the Maquis, Torres had actually reprogrammed the missile herself, with the intention of turning the Cardassians' own weapon against them. Without a Cardassian target in sight, the artificially intelligent Cardassian Dreadnought targets a heavily-populated Class-M planet , Rakosa V. B'Elanna determines she must be the one to keep Dreadnought from hurting anyone else, and boards the missile to convince it to stand down.

While no concrete reason is given for exactly how the Dreadnought wound up in the Delta Quadrant, its last known location in the Alpha Quadrant was the Badlands, the same rough patch of space where Voyager and the Val Jean, Chakotay's Maquis raider, fatefully met. Because of this, Torres theorizes that Dreadnought arrived in the Delta Quadrant the same way that Voyager and the Val Jean did , courtesy of the Caretaker.

Star Trek: Voyager’s B’Elanna Is More Klingon Than TNG’s Worf Ever Was

4 a klingon d-7 class cruiser, complete with klingons, star trek: voyager, season 7, episode 14 "prophecy".

The USS Voyager certainly never expected to find a Klingon ship in the Delta Quadrant, but more surprising is the fact that the crew of the Klingon D-7 Class Cruiser believes their savior, the prophesied kuvah'magh, is aboard Voyager . Janeway assures the Klingon captain, Kohlar (Wren T. Brown), that the Federation and Klingon Empire have been allies for the past 80 years, and offers Voyager's own half-Klingon, Lt. B'Elanna Torres, as proof their societies are working together now. The kuvah'magh is Torres' unborn daughter, who does save the Klingons, but not the way they expected.

Centuries ago, Kohlar's great-grandfather set off on a quest to find the kuvah'magh, and the Klingon D-7 Cruiser became a generation ship that is now crewed by the descendants of its original crew . The quest begun by Kohlar's great-grandfather brought Kohlar and his crew to the Delta Quadrant after four generations of searching. Whether B'Elanna's child is actually the kuvah'magh or not, Kohlar desperately wants the baby to be their savior, so that his people may finally rest.

3 Amelia Earhart

Star trek: voyager season 2, episode 1 "the 37s".

The discovery of a 1936 Ford truck, seemingly disconnected from any parent vehicle, leads the USS Voyager to a nearby Class-L planet, where they find eight humans who have been in cryo-stasis since they were abducted by aliens in the 1930s. Among them are one of Janeway's personal heroes, legendary American aviator Amelia Earhart (Sharon Lawrence) , who disappeared without a trace while attempting to fly around the world, and Earhart's navigator, Fred Noonan (David Graf). Earhart and the other preserved humans are known by the planet's inhabitants as "The 37s", and revered as sacred.

Originally thought to be aliens, the natives of the unnamed planet are the descendants of humans. A species called the Briori abducted the natives' ancestors, along with Earhart and the other 37s, from Earth centuries earlier , and took them to the Delta Quadrant. Once held as slaves, the humans who weren't in stasis revolted to free themselves from the Briori, and developed a thriving, Earth-like civilization in the Delta Quadrant. Voyager's crew consider staying with the humans in their little slice of home, while Janeway also offers a ride back to Earth to anyone who wants it, including Amelia Earhart.

2 The USS Equinox

Star trek: voyager season 5, episode 26 & season 6, episode 1 "equinox".

The crew of the USS Voyager believe they're the only Starfleet vessel in the Delta Quadrant until they find the USS Equinox, five years into their journey home. Captain Rudolph Ransom (John Savage) and the Equinox crew have had a harder time in the Delta Quadrant than Voyager, with more damage, fewer starting resources, and fewer opportunities to make friends along the way. Ransom's survival tactics include sacrificing innocent nucleogenic life forms for a more efficient form of fuel, which Janeway finds hard to stomach, and decides that Ransom needs to be held accountable for defying Federation ideals, regardless of how badly the Equinox is damaged.

Although Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) suggests that the Equinox might be in the Delta Quadrant on a rescue mission to find Voyager, the USS Equinox's specs don't fit the profile of a starship that would be assigned to a long-range mission. The explanation of how the Equinox arrived in the Delta Quadrant in the first place seems fairly simple, because Captain Ransom tells Janeway that the Equinox was also abducted by the Caretaker , just like Voyager, but the Equinox has only been in the Delta Quadrant for 2 years, and Janeway destroyed the Caretaker's array 5 years earlier.

1 Seven of Nine

Debuts in star trek: voyager season 4, episode 1 "scorpion, part 2".

When Captain Kathryn Janeway allies with the Borg in order to secure safe passage across Borg space, Janeway refuses the cursory assimilation that the Borg want to use to communicate with Janeway and Voyager's crew, and instead requests a speaker for the Borg, citing the existence of Locutus (Patrick Stewart) as precedent. Seven of Nine , Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01, is selected as the Borg drone to act as liaison between the Collective and Voyager, likely because Seven of Nine had once been a member of Species 5168, like most of Voyager's crew -- in other words, human.

Voyager season 5, episodes 15 & 16, "Dark Frontier" provides even more detail of the Hansens' fateful journey.

After Seven's link with the Collective is severed, more information about Seven's human origin comes to light. In Voyager season 4, episode 6 "The Raven", when Voyager nears the Hansens' ship, the USS Raven, memories of Seven's early life surface, revealing that Seven had been six-year-old human Annika Hansen , the daughter of Magnus Hansen (Kirk Baily) and Erin Hansen (Laura Stepp), Federation scientists who were studying the Borg when they were assimilated. Voyager season 5, episodes 15 & 16, "Dark Frontier" provides even more detail of the Hansens' fateful journey, showing the Raven arriving in the Delta Quadrant by following a Borg Cube through a transwarp conduit.

10 Ways USS Voyager Changed In Star Trek’s Delta Quadrant

Star Trek: Voyager links back to the greater Star Trek universe with people and starships from the Alpha Quadrant. Connections to the familiar were especially important early on, because Voyager 's place in the Star Trek franchise was established and aided by the legitimacy these finds offered. Later, when the USS Voyager used the Hirogen communications array to communicate with Starfleet Command, links back to the Alpha Quadrant were plentiful again, not only to prove that the USS Voyager was closer to home, but to help Star Trek: Voyager maintain connections to Star Trek and carry the franchise in its final years.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to Start Filming 10-Episode First Season This Summer

It may not air until 2026..

Adele Ankers-Range Avatar

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy showrunner and executive producer Alex Kurtzman has confirmed that the first season of the all-new original series will comprise 10 episodes, with filming beginning this summer.

In a recent interview with Collider at SXSW, Kurtzman revealed that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is on target to start filming later this summer as the team has officially reached the "halfway" point in the writers' room. He warned fans, however, that they might not see the new Star Trek series beam onto Paramount+ for a while.

"It could end up not airing until 2026," Kurtzman said. "By starting [shooting in late summer], just building the sets alone is a massive endeavor, then six months of shooting, then six to eight months of post. If you recall, there was all this noise around Season 1 and Season 2 of Discovery because the streaming service, they were like, 'Oh, it's like a turnaround on a cop show.' I'm like, 'No, you don't understand. It's eight months of visual effects turnaround, and we're not gonna rush that.'"

Kurtzman asserted that the series will "come out" but only when it's ready, and he can't put a date on that yet because they haven't even "started casting the kids" who will appear as the new class of Starfleet cadets at the center of the story, though promises those characters will reinforce what fans love about Starfleet.

"There's a lot of different kids from a lot of different places," Kurtzman explained. "Some of them want to be there, some of them don't want to be there. It's gonna be a fundamental reinforcement of all the things we love about Starfleet, in general.

"You always want to ask yourself, 'Why this show now?'" he added. "I think that one of the big things that certainly my 17-year-old son is facing, which is kind of a fundamental 'Star Trek' question, is, 'How did we get here? How has this generation inherited the mistakes from previous generations? And what are we gonna do to fix it, to build that optimistic future that is Roddenberry's essential vision?' That is very much going to be at the heart of Starfleet Academy."

Paramount Plus

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy landed a series order from Paramount+ in March 2023, with Noga Landau joining Kurtzman as co-showrunner and executive producer on the show alongside fellow executive producers Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber.

Paramount+ already has an expansive lineup of original Star Trek series, including Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Star Trek: Discovery's final adventure will also premiere globally on April 4 with a two-episode debut, followed by new episodes each Thursday.

History [ ]

USS Enterprise-E in drydock 2

The USS Enterprise -E in drydock over Earth in 2379

The Sovereign -class was introduced during the early 2370s , and was, at the time, the longest and most advanced starship design in the fleet , though not as large as the Galaxy -class starship. The Sovereign -class USS Enterprise -E was built at the San Francisco Fleet Yards and was launched from that facility on stardate 49827.5 . ( Star Trek: First Contact dedication plaque )

USS Enterprise-E engages Borg at 001

The USS Enterprise -E firing at the Borg cube at the Battle of Sector 001

The Sovereign class's first major engagements came in 2373 , when the USS Enterprise saw action in the Borg incursion into Sector 001 , and was instrumental in the destruction of the attacking cube . ( Star Trek: First Contact )

While the Sovereign -class was not a key player in the Dominion War , such vessels as the Enterprise -E spent time during the war putting out diplomatic "brush fires" and extending the occasional olive branch, as the Federation Diplomatic Corps were busy attempting to put an end to the war. ( Star Trek: Insurrection )

Sometime after the Enterprise 's mission in the Briar Patch and before the engagement with the Reman warship Scimitar , a refitting of the Enterprise -E took place. The major changes included five additional torpedo tubes and four additional phaser arrays . A slight change in the warp nacelle pylons was also implemented. The Enterprise was able to deploy these new systems in 2379 , prior to its mission to Romulus . ( Star Trek Nemesis )

In 2380 , while the USS Cerritos was undergoing repairs, Captain Carol Freeman refused any cosmetic changes, noting that she hated it when a ship gets repaired and " comes out looking all... Sovereign -class. " ( LD : " No Small Parts ")

In 2381 , the Sovereign -class USS Van Citters came to the aid of Douglas Station when it came under attack by the three ships of the Texas -class . Over the course of the battle, the Van Citters became overwhelmed by the three ships and was incapacitated after its shields failed and it received significant damage to its primary hull and nacelles. The Cerritos was able to save the Van Citters from destruction by baiting the Texas -class vessels to itself. ( LD : " The Stars At Night ")

In 2384 , at least 19 ships of this class (which included the USS Sovereign and the Enterprise -E) intercepted the USS Protostar in a restricted sector near the star Gamma Serpentis . They were part of an armada which included Akira -class , Centaur -type , and Defiant -class starships. They were later infected with the Living construct by Ensign Asencia . ( PRO : " Mindwalk ", " Supernova, Part 1 ")

In 2401 , eight ships of this class were sent by Starfleet to join an armada opposing an unknown Borg vessel . The Borg liaison sent to the USS Stargazer briefly commandeered this vessel and others, before the crew managed to engage their auto-destruct system. ( PIC : " The Star Gazer ")

On Frontier Day that same year, 38 ships of this class were involved in fleet maneuvers to celebrate 250 years since the Enterprise NX-01 took her first voyage. They were commandeered after officers under the age of 25 were placed under the influence of the Borg with the help of Jack Crusher . ( PIC : " Võx ", " The Last Generation ")

The Sovereign -class originally employed twelve phaser arrays at key locations throughout the ship's hull. Seven dorsal phaser arrays were located on the primary hull, one extending around the saucer section, giving it an oval appearance. Six smaller arrays covered the aft dorsal firing arcs and were located along the aft portion of the saucer section, above the main shuttlebay .

Four ventral phaser arrays were located on the primary hull, extending around in nearly a half circle on both the starboard and port ventral sides of the saucer section. A single phaser array was located along the ventral section of the engineering hull, running perpendicular to the hull. ( Star Trek: First Contact ; Star Trek: Insurrection ) During the refit, four were added to the trailing edges of the warp nacelle pylons (one dorsal and one ventral for each pylon) bringing the phaser array count to sixteen. ( Star Trek Nemesis )

Firing phasers from the saucer section

In her original configuration, the Sovereign -class mounted five torpedo launchers. The "main" launcher was located on the ventral portion of the saucer on a turret and was supplemented by one twin-tube launcher, forward and aft at the bottom of the secondary hull. The refit saw the addition of five more tubes: three on the dorsal saucer section (a single tube facing forward on Deck 3 and a twin-tube launcher facing aft (located above the aft saucer airlock ) as well as two on the secondary hull, both facing aft – one above and one below the secondary hull shuttlebay . In terms of deck layout, the upper sections of the Sovereign -class starship formed the command section and living areas, while the lower decks housed main engineering and fuel supplies.

As is traditional, deck numbering ascended from top to bottom. At the top of the saucer section was Deck 1, which housed the main bridge . This deck also held the more recent modifications of an observation lounge , a ready room for the ship's captain, and an airlock with attached cabin.

Deck 2 encompassed the first of the many levels of crew quarters , with rooms for the highest-ranking command staff and an officer's mess hall . Decks 3 through 9 featured more officers' quarters, the forward and aft viewing lounges, science labs , the main shuttlebay , conduits for the optical data network , and the vessel's main computer core .

Decks 10 through 14 completed the primary hull of the Sovereign -class starship, and also encompassed forward and aft cargo bays on Decks 10 and 11, and phaser systems on deck 11. The stellar cartography department aboard the Sovereign -class was located on Deck 11. Sensors and the secondary navigational deflector were found on Deck 12.

Deck 13, which was taken up almost entirely by deuterium fuel tanks , marked the real split between the habitable areas and the engineering and ship's storage sections. Main engineering and its related systems – such as the EPS power taps, the central matter/antimatter reaction chamber , support labs, and the engineering computer core – were spread over decks 14 through 18.

Deck 14 was largely dedicated to engineering systems, and also featured the lower sensor platform. Decks 15 through 18 comprised the main navigational deflector array and an auxiliary bridge, which was also known as the battle bridge .

Deck 16 also featured the launch and retrieval mechanism for the captain's yacht . The yacht was lowered by a set of gantries until its engines extended to operational position and then it would be free to maneuver.

Starfleet Cartography

The Sovereign -class was also equipped with an astrometrics lab where a direct uplink with Starfleet Cartography could be established. Interference from nearby astronomical phenomena could interfere with the lab's link with Starfleet Cartography. Command and control systems [ ]

The computer system on board the Sovereign -class were bio-neural gel pack -based. Computer systems were concentrated in two computer cores . The primary core was located directly below the main bridge on decks 6 through 8. The secondary core was located in the engineering section, adjacent to environmental control , on decks 15 through 17.

Sovereign Bridge2

Primary operational control of the ship was provided by the main bridge, located at the top of the primary hull. The bridge directly supervised all primary mission operations and coordinated all departmental activities.

Sovereign class bridge

The central area of the main bridge provided seating and information displays for the captain and two other officers. The captain's chair was raised from the rest of the bridge officers to the height of the surrounding level, which included tactical and operations . The two officer seats were equipped with fully programmable consoles for a variety of uses.

Directly fore of the command area was the conn officer , who faced the main viewer . To the port side of the conn officer, also facing the main viewscreen, was the operations officer 's console , which was identical in size and design to the helm station.

Sovereign Viewscreen

The Ops and Conn stations in front of the viewscreen

At the very front of the bridge chamber was a large viewscreen. When the screen was not active, a standard bulkhead was present.

Aft and to the left of the command area was an elevated platform on which tactical and security consoles were located. To the captain's right, behind the tactical console, was the mission operations section of the bridge. Against the starboard side walls of the main bridge were the consoles for sciences , along with others that were programmable for a multitude of functions.

The observation lounge

Located against the aft wall of the bridge was a large master systems display monitor, similar to the one in engineering. All relevant ship information (such as damage, power distribution, etc.) could be displayed on this cutaway image of the vessel. This monitor could be used to direct ship operations and could be configured for limited flight control if necessary.

Also located against the aft wall of the main bridge was the large engineering console. This had a smaller cutaway diagram of the vessel, which displayed all engineering-relevant data and showed warp fields and engine output.

There were two turbolifts on the bridge. There was also an emergency ladder that connected the bridge to lower decks. Additionally, the bridge provided direct access to the observation lounge , which was located directly aft of the bridge, and the captain's ready room . ( Star Trek: First Contact )

Ready room [ ]

USS Enterprise-E ready room

The ready room

The captain's ready room doubled as an office and a second private cabin in addition to the commanding officer 's private quarters. It was located off the starboard side of the main bridge on Deck 1, and provided a place where the captain could work or rest while remaining next to the bridge in case of an emergency. Meetings between the captain and one or two people would also take place here.

In one corner there was a simple, narrow bed with a small bookcase over it. Toward the rear of the room was a desk with a computer console.

In a corner behind the desk was a doorway which led into a bathroom containing a sonic shower . Below a mirror was a sink that had no visible controls; the water came on automatically when hands were placed beneath the faucet , and went off when they were withdrawn.

Usually, the ready room would be decorated by its occupant by adding a number of personal ornaments.

Propulsion systems [ ]

Sovereign -class starships achieved warp flight through two warp nacelles , which housed multiple pairs of warp coils . It could achieve warp factor 8. ( Star Trek Nemesis )

There were two impulse engines , both located at the aft of the saucer section. ( Star Trek: First Contact )

Main engineering contained the controls for the warp and impulse drive systems. Entrance to the primary engineering spaces was provided by two large blast doors, a pair each deck on Decks 15 and 16, that could be closed for internal or external security reasons, as well as in case of emergencies. It was much larger than on previous starship classes and was split into three levels to accommodate the warp core, which spanned several decks.

The majority of controls were situated on the main deck (Deck 16) and an upper-level gantry. Arranged around the warp core stack were a number of control consoles that could be reconfigured to emulate all the command controls on the bridge.

The largest workstation was the master systems display, which was used to monitor the status of all key systems and could comfortably accommodate four personnel. There were also various wall displays, including a schematic that showed the 'health' of the warp propulsion system.

The deuterium tanks were above the core, while antimatter storage pods surrounded the base of the core. Two large cylindrical tanks were positioned next to the warp core and contained highly dangerous plasma coolant . Two rectangular power transfer conduits fed off from the warp reaction chamber and angle out of main engineering to the port and starboard warp nacelles. ( Star Trek: Insurrection )

Additionally, there were numerous ladders and access panels to Jefferies tubes , leading throughout the starship. A second tier ringed the second level of main engineering on deck 15. Two ladders on the opposite ends of the catwalk provided access. ( Star Trek: First Contact ) By 2379 , Starfleet began implementing a force field system around the warp reactor. The Sovereign -class was equipped with a warp core ejection system . Normally used as a last resort measure when a warp core breach was in progress, in 2375 the Enterprise -E used the capability in order to seal a subspace rift , caused by the Son'a , by remote detonating the ejected core. ( Star Trek: Insurrection )

Transporter systems [ ]

Enterprise-E transporter

The back wall of a Sovereign -class transporter

The Sovereign -class starship included at least four separate transporter rooms , capable of site-to-site transport . ( Star Trek Nemesis ) Unusually, the transporter console in a Sovereign -class transporter room was built into a wall opposite the transporter platform , from where the controls on the console could be seen. ( Star Trek: Insurrection ) The transporters could be operated from both the tactical and engineering stations on the ship's bridge. A Sovereign -class starship was capable of beaming a single small vessel – such as a Scorpion -class attack fighter – aboard, even if the smaller craft was mobile. ( Star Trek Nemesis )

Crew support systems [ ]

The Sovereign- class starship had the usual array of amenities available to the crew, including holodecks , gymnasiums , a ship's library , etc.

Medical facilities [ ]

Sovereign Sickbay

One large sickbay facility, located on Deck 7, served as the primary care facility on Sovereign -class starships. Equipped with six standard and one advanced biobed , sickbay was also home to the chief medical officer 's office and a small lab used for routine analysis of patients . ( Star Trek Nemesis )

A second, smaller facility identical to an Intrepid -class sickbay was also present on Deck 16. ( Star Trek: First Contact )

The room itself was considered to be general purpose, and was often the location of regular crew physicals, appointments, and various medical emergencies – it could effectively handle the majority of situations that a starship crew would face. ( Star Trek: First Contact )

Located near sickbay was the counselor 's office, a modest room approximately the size of a standard living room compartment. ( Star Trek: Insurrection )

Crew quarters [ ]

Sovereign Crew Quarters

Senior officers' quarters

Sovereign Crew Quarters bedroom

Officers' quarters bedroom

The arrangement of living quarters was designed to be modular, so that at any time a particular area could be reconfigured to create larger or smaller residential areas. Most living areas were located on the upper and lower surfaces of the saucer section , offering residents a remarkable view of the starscape outside their windows .

As was common on Starfleet vessels, the living accommodations for senior officers and VIPs were larger than standard crew quarters. Officers' quarters usually included a living area in the center of the dwelling, which held a personal workstation, couch , replicator , and a small dining area.

Connected to this was a bedroom that featured a double-sized bed and room for personal belongings. Normally, the bedroom would be connected by a half-bathroom with wash basin, mirror, toilet , several drawers, and a sonic shower . For senior staff , this bathroom was usually upgraded to a full-sized bathroom with bathtub . ( Star Trek: Insurrection )

Auxiliary spacecraft systems [ ]

Located at the dorsal stern of the primary hull , the main shuttlebay took up a significant portion of the aft section of Decks 6 through 9 on the Sovereign -class. Due to the mission profile of the Sovereign , the shuttlebay extended further than normal for a vessel its size to accommodate runabouts and several shuttlecraft .

The secondary shuttlebay was located at the very aft portion of the engineering hull. This bay, while smaller than the main facility, was just as capable of handling flight operations as the main shuttlebay. ( Star Trek: First Contact )

In addition to shuttlecraft, the Sovereign class also featured a captain's yacht, designed for special diplomatic missions. The yacht on board the Enterprise -E was named the Cousteau . ( Star Trek: Insurrection )

Escape pods [ ]

The Sovereign -class starship carried a number of escape pods . In the event of a catastrophic emergency, these pods served the same purpose as the lifeboats of a water-based vessel and ensured the continued survival of passengers and crew after the primary vessel had to be abandoned.

The escape pods were located throughout the Sovereign -class starship's primary and secondary hulls: there were two rows of pods on the dorsal side of the command saucer, and two on the ventral side. Further rows of pods lined each side of the engineering hull.

Unlike the escape pods utilized on the Galaxy - and Intrepid -class, there was no outer hatch that opened for launch. ( VOY : " Year of Hell ") Instead, the heat shield of the escape pod lay flush with the Sovereign -class ship's outer hull. Personnel entered the pods through hatches that lined sections of the ship's corridors , and a situation display monitor was located between the pods.

Each hatch swung open on a hinge at the bottom, creating a short ramp from the floor of the corridor into the interior of the capsule. The pods were equipped with heat shields for atmospheric entry and landing if a suitable planet could be found to set down on. ( Star Trek: First Contact )

By the 2380s some ships of the class have been upgraded with newer style escape pods. ( PRO : " Mindwalk ", " Supernova, Part 1 ")

Background information [ ]

Enterprise-E bridge

The bridge of the Enterprise -E

In production notes for Star Trek: First Contact , Michael Okuda suggested that the prototype for the Sovereign -class was the USS Sovereign ( β ) and would have had a registry in a range around NX/NCC-75000. The Sovereign was also mentioned briefly in the Star Trek Encyclopedia .

The official cutaway poster of the vessel that was released for First Contact designates the ship as an "Explorer Type 2".

It appears that the Sovereign class had at least two sickbay facilities, given sources in Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek Nemesis that indicate sickbays on Decks 8 and 16. The Sovereign class was not the first class of vessel to have several sickbays; for example, Beverly Crusher was seen evacuating a sickbay in the engineering hull of the USS Enterprise -D in Star Trek Generations , as well as being treated in the engineering hull sickbay herself in " The Arsenal of Freedom ".

The saucer separation capability of the Sovereign class was something that was neither seen nor mentioned on screen or in the scripts , but John Eaves went ahead and designed a detailed separation anyway. Design sketches were published in Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 11 , page 49. Ronald D. Moore also stated that he believed the Enterprise-E had a detachable saucer section. ( AOL chat , 1997 )

The Sovereign class name is not directly referred to in dialogue until LD : " No Small Parts ", but can be read on a master systems display on the USS Enterprise -E bridge.

The total number of Sovereign -class vessels present at Frontier Day was established by former Star Trek: Picard Research Assistant Jörg Hillebrand . [2]

Studio model [ ]

Most sources agree that the Enterprise -E was 2,248 feet (685.2 meters) long. John Eaves described the rationale as follows:

"When the "E" had a final approved design, we drew up a chart of all the Enterprises in profile. Herman [Zimmerman] and I set down a whole bunch of cutouts of the "E" in various sizes to see where this new ship should scale with the others. We found one size that looked appropriate and we put a scale to its length and that would be 2,248 feet. Rick [Sternbach] was waiting to do the blueprints and add his creativity to the design, so we gave him a drawing with this one measurement. From there he sized the whole ship ..." [3]

The length of 2,248 feet can also be seen in John Eaves' size charts for Star Trek: Insurrection . [4] The Star Trek Nemesis size chart puts it at 2,250 feet, but since all the other figures in the chart are expressed to the nearest ten feet, we don't know whether this was a size revision or mere rounding for the purposes of this chart. [5]

According to John Eaves, the Enterprise -E was to have been retrofit at the end of Star Trek Nemesis but due to budgetary reasons and script changes the Enterprise was only seen being repaired in dry dock. " For the end of the film the badly destroyed and damaged E is being rebuilt in space-dock. This is where the opportunity was given to really fix all the lines and flow to match the roots of where the original drawing had left off. Not too often does one gets the chance to rework a beloved piece of art, and I was so happy to get the chance regardless of how minor the changes were. "

" The drawings were done and to be seen as the E leaves the space-dock at the end of Nemesis , with what we were hoping to get approval on being the new Aztec patterned paint job, that was so prominent with all the preceding variations of the Enterprise . As production went on, it was becoming clear that Nemesis was going to be the last of the TNG movies and thus, the E would fly no more. Very sad thoughts, and I was so hoping to at least to get to see that final version fly off into space... Budget and script changes kept the E in the bay under repair so all that exists of the big finish only exists on paper as a bunch of plans. " [6]

Apocrypha [ ]

Sovereign -class starships have been mentioned often in novels and games . A role playing game supplement from Decipher mentions the Sovereign , Yorktown ( β ), and Independence ( β ).

The class's prototype, the USS Sovereign , has appeared or been mentioned in several non- canon sources, such as the novels Spectre , Dark Victory , and The Genesis Wave, Book One , as well as the Pocket Books ' reference works release Starship Spotter . The Sovereign was also the ship the player commanded in the later portions of the game Star Trek: Bridge Commander .

USS Zhukov alongside USS Sovereign in Bridge Commander

The USS Zhukov (foreground) alongside the USS Sovereign (background) in Star Trek: Bridge Commander

Star Trek: Bridge Commander and Star Trek: Legacy list a likely and widely-accepted registry number for the Sovereign as NX-73811 (later NCC-73811). Other games mentioning the Sovereign are the role-playing game supplements The Price of Freedom from Last Unicorn Games and Starships from Decipher. In Star Trek: Legacy there were several Sovereign -class starships seen in the campaign, including the Enterprise , Sovereign , Davis ( β ), and Legacy ( β ).

In the video game Star Trek: Invasion , two Sovereign -class vessels appeared: the USS Enterprise -E , and the USS Sentinel -B ( β ). The Enterprise -E is also the main base of operations in the game Star Trek: Elite Force II .

The Sovereign -class is also the most powerful class available to the player in the game Star Trek: Armada , with the variant timeship USS Premonition ( β ) also including a temporal weapon which allowed the player to pause time in local areas. This ship has never been mentioned anywhere else and due to the events of the game may never have existed (due to changes in the timeline by the player's actions.)

In Star Trek: Armada II , one Sovereign -class starship is the Saratoga ( β ). In both games, the Sovereign -class has a special weapon called the "Corbomite Reflector" which deflects enemy torpedoes, sometimes right back at the ship that fired them.

In Star Trek Online , the Sovereign -class starship is an "Assault Cruiser", available to those with the rank of Rear Admiral . The Vice Admiral variants come with metreon gas canisters/warhead and a special quantum torpedo launcher. Between the free-to-obtain version, the Rear Admiral variant, the two Vice Admiral variants, and the Fleet variant, there are seven classes: Sovereign (plus Nemesis Refit) , Regent ( β ), Majestic ( β ), Noble ( β ), Archon , Imperial ( β ), and Vizier . The mirror universe version of these classes are referred to as "Star Cruiser".
