An Introduction about Hoi An

Hoi An (meaning “peaceful meeting place” in Vietnamese) is a well-known tourist destination in Vietnam. By a white-sandy coast and rivers, its centre is a colorful, charming old town that prospered from trading with foreign countries. This Unesco world heritage site comes to life in the evening while millions of lanterns are lit. Full moon night is most worthy to wait for. It’s spectacular thanks to the local traditional lantern festival and wishing candle lanterns on the river. All photographers love Hoi An.

Surrounding Hoi An’s ancient quarters, it is a peaceful countryside studded with small villages. Rice fields, mangroves, vegetable gardens and palm forests make it much more green. Some communities specialize in making pottery, coconut products or sleeping mat and in carving wood works.

Not far away from paddy fields, Hoi An has a quite long coastline that stretches until Monkey mountain in Da Nang. Here, beaches are fringed with crystal clear seawater and medium waves. Around the horizon, the Cham islands increase the beauty of Hoi An’s beaches.

What is Hoi An Famous for?

Hoi An is famous for many things. The first one is its Old town that Unesco inscribed to be a world heritage site. The town has well-preserved houses, all feature yellow walls, tiled roofs and wooden furniture as a uniform. Blooming flowers, blue sky, green rivers, and colorful lanterns make it so pretty. Hoi An is loved by photographers and instagrammers worldwide.

Secondly, Hoi An becomes famous for its beauty (and atmosphere) at night. After it’s dark, the town is filled by uncountable lantern lights. And, visitors will see them most in the full moon when people celebrate their traditional Lantern festival On the river, boats and floating paper lanterns make seers once again fall in love.

Local food at Hoi An is what travelers love next. The cuisine is unsimilar to anywhere else in the country thanks to long-time exchange of cultures. The best known dishes include banh mi (people believe that local banh mi is the best in Vietnam), chicken rice, white rose dumplings, Mi quang noodle, Cao lau noodle or Pho noodle soup.

Shopping in Hoi An is a good experience too. Tailors in town are able to complete a suit within 24 hours, up to personal features and specifications. Plus, the price is really high, therefore travelers come to Hoi An for custom tailoring.

Car and Taxi

Car is the most popular vehicle to get from Da Nang to Hoi An due to convenience and affordable cost. The price for a roundtrip ranges from 700,000 to 1,000,000 VND, depending on the length of the trip and size of the group. Travel time by private car or taxi from Da Nang to Hoi An may be up to 1 hour. Chat with us on whatsapp number +84968009827 to book.

Bus to Hoi An

By 2020, there was a public bus connecting Da Nang and Hoi An. It’s the cheapest way to get from a city to another. Now, it is not available anymore. Please follow up your website for updated information.

Many travelers don’t stay overnight in Hoi An, and instead, they choose a hotel in Da Nang. To visit Hoi An, they ride a motorbike. The distance between cities is some 30 kilometers, so the drive is from 45 to 60 minutes. The quickest way is the coastal road, namely Vo Nguyen Giap and Truong Sa in Da Nang, and then Lac Long Quan in Hoi An. Halfway, that is the Marble mountains.

From Hue, motorbike rental providers allow travelers to drop the bike in Hoi An (don’t have to ride back to Hue!) if self driving. The distance is 140 kilometers, including the Hai Van pass – Vietnam’s best coastal road. For those who would like to experience but worry about their own skills and safety, it’s also available to book a local rider.

The nearest railway station to Hoi An is in Da Nang. So, travelers can get a train from other cities to the Da Nang train station, and then take another vehicle to Hoi An. Get Around Hoi An: What is Best?

Once again, we have to mention that Hoi An is a small city. Travelers absolutely can explore it by foot if book a hotel in the Minh An, Cam Pho and Son Phong areas. Within the Old town, pedestrian hours are daily from 9 to 11:30 am, and from 3 to 9:30 pm. The nearest beach – An Bang is only 3 kilometers away from here. Many people choose to walk there (rice fields, rivers, water buffalos, and scenic spots on the way).

Getting around Hoi An by taxi is fairly easy. In the surroundings of Hoi An’s walking street (in Old town), there are many taxi cars and drivers to choose from. The cost is metered, around 15,000 VND for one kilometer. If stay in a hotel tucked away in small roads or laneways, let’s walk to the closest main road to hail. People in the reception can help to call one also. Passengers will pay by cash.

Shuttle Bus

Shuttle buses run by electricity are new to Hoi An. Local authorities aim to reduce traffic congestion in town, especially in the evening and air pollution. The experience on a shuttle bus is more interesting than cars. The cost depends on the length of the drive, and number of passengers. If the group is bigger than 5 and the distance is smaller than 2 kilometers, the price is 10,000 VND per person. Small kids and toddles are free of charge. It’s exactly how much visitors pay when they move within Hoi An’s downtown. For further places, such as beaches or the coconut village, the price is higher, but not more than 40,000 VND per person. There are 2 simple ways to have this vehicle: hailing in main streets or coming to car parks.

Hoi An is small enough to cycle around. Many hotels provide free bicycles for the guests (come first, serve first, no reservation). If not available for free, the rental is really cheap. It’s around 1 USD for one day full. No doubt, the cheapest way to get around. Travelers can ride to the beaches, rice fields, Cam Thanh coconut village or Cam Kim island.

Anytime of the day, it’s possible to tour the Hoi An ancient town by bicycle. This Unesco heritage is in the list of the towns that are most friendly to bicycles worldwide. Late afternoon onwards, tourists coming from Da Nang visit the town and make it full of pedestrians. Therefore, riding a bicycle during that time is a little bit difficult.

Riding a motorcycle is a faster way to get somewhere than a bicycle. Rental price is really cheap, between 100,000 and 200,000 VND for one full day or 24 hours. Helmet (or maps) is provided. Gasoline cost fluctuates around 1 USD/1 littler. So, the motorbike is amongst the cheapest vehicles to get around Hoi An.

Note: Vietnam follows a right-hand traffic system. If you drive to the left in your country, you should consider carefully.

Inside the Hoi An old town heritage, except for walking hours (9 to 11:30 am and 3 to 9:30 pm), it’s possible to tour around it by bike. If just like to get there and then walk, the parking fee is from 5,000 to 10,000 VND. The latest service is up to 10 pm.

To go to the beach or discover the countryside, travelers can save their time (and even money) when riding a scooter. It’s easy and safe, but the riders need to be careful and pay attention to avoid dangerous situations. Further in distance, My Son sanctuary, the Marble mountains and Hai Van pass are popular attractions. The mountain pass requires good driving skills and confidence because it’s winding, featuring hairpin-like turns, twists and dense fog.

The Best Way to Get Around Hoi An

The best way to get around Hoi An depends on different situations. So, this is our thoughts:

– Hoi An old town: walking

– Hoi An’s countryside: bicycle or motorcycle

– Solo travelers: bicycle or motorcycle

– Families or a group of friends: car, taxi, shuttle bus

Brief History of Hoi An

Hoi An was known as a busy international trading town in Vietnam and Southeast Asia from 15 th to 19 th centuries. During that period, merchants and their sailing boats docked here, to exchange different products (spices, ceramics, silk, etc). They came from Japan, China, and Europe. Hoi An got its European name “Faifoo”. Heritage left by these nationalities are around its old town today.

Late 19 th century was the turning point in Hoi An’s history. Geological activities in the river estuary didn’t allow boats to easily access the town. Vietnamese kings also prohibited westerner’s boats to get there directly (have to stop at Da Nang before). They got worried about military power and religious missionaries from the west. For that reason, commerce in Hoi An declined. Since then, Da Nang has been replacing its role as the most important center of commerce in the area (until now).

During the colonial time, 19 th and 20 th centuries, French based in Hoi An and designed it as a provincial capital. Influences from French people are still seen today.

In 1999, Hoi An was added to the Unesco world heritage site list, together with My Son sanctuary. Since then, it has been popular with both local and foreign tourists. At the present, this little town draws millions of visitors although its population is only 120,000 people.

Eating and Coffee in Hoi An

Hoi an food specialties.

Hoi An cuisine is unique in the world thanks to cultural exchanges in the past. Travelers should try bánh mì – sandwich filled by pate, raw vegetables, herbs and meats, cao lầu – the most special local noodles, mì quảng – another famous noodle dish, bánh bao bánh vạc – white rose dumplings, more. See all dishes as you can see in Hoi An in https://centralvietnamguide.com/hoi-an-food-specialties/ .

Note: Cao lau is seen as the signature food of Hoi An. Nowhere else outside its old centre, people can try it.

Vietnamese restaurants in the Old town serve at least several local food specialties. At some venues, it’s possible to see almost everything on the menu. Thanks to that, travelers just need to visit one place, and then can taste many dishes. We recommend coming to restaurants where the food is amongst best sellers all over Hoi An. For example, the couple of stores selling banh mi sandwiches: Madam Khanh and Banh Mi Phuong.

Street Foods in Hoi An

Hoi An is also known for street foods that are many and tasty. In  Nguyen Hoang night market , visitors will see vendors and they serve a lot of options (even for vegetarians too). Bánh tráng nướng – grilled rice paper with toppings and sauces, bánh ướt thịt nướng – grilled pork skewers, rolled with rice papers and vegetables or banana pancakes are deserving to try. Around sunset, in old streets, rice cakes, clear dumplings, mango cake (no mango!) and other snacks are also sold.

Coffee and Coffee Shops in Hoi An

Vietnam is the 2 nd  largest coffee producer globally. Inside the Hoi An ancient town, there are many coffee shops where tourists can try Vietnamese traditional coffees and western styled ones, the new arrivals. Beans are bought from farmers living in the Highlands, and then roasted in the shop (that’s why some places are named “roasteries”). Rooftop cafes also provide an incredible view that is ideal for Instagrammable pictures.

Hoi An Shopping: What to Buy in Hoi An?

Main article: Hoi An Shopping Guide

Travelers can stroll around the Ancient town, markets, night markets and other shops in the centre to buy favourite things. The lantern is one of the best reminders about Hoi An. Size, shape, color, and pattern are diverse here. Luckily, local lanterns are foldable, so packing them into the luggages is free of difficulty. In addition, handicraft products are what travelers are interested in Hoi An too. The material is varied (wood, bamboo, ceramic, clay, leather, etc). That’s why shoppers have so many choices to select and bring home then.

Tailor-made clothings is loved by many travelers. They can find good-quality fabric and skillful tailors to make it, with a cheaper price than their home country. Within 24hrs, it’s possible to go for the first fitting to the suit or dress or any other garments. Shipping abroad and card payment are available at most tailors in town.

For those who love cooking, there are plenty of spices, seeds, seasonings and dried fruits to buy. Make sure that your country accepts.

All Guided Tours from Hoi An

Main article: Hoi An Day Tours – Best Day Trips from Hoi An

Hoi An Old Town Walking Tour

The Old town (Unesco world heritage site) is a must-visit attraction in Hoi An. To get insight into its history, explore local culture and photograph, walking is the best way. That’s why many travelers join a walking tour, with a local guide.

We recommend having a morning tour when the sun is not high yet, or an  afternoon tour  when the temperature goes down. A lantern making class is optional. From Da Nang, an  evening tour  is helpful because travelers can spend longer in town, experience further and have more memories (and pictures!). Here, local food tasting, lantern boat ride, night market or the Hoi An memories show is selected by yourself.

Golden Hands Bridge Tour from Hoi An

Golden Hands Bridge tour from Hoi An is one of the most popular day trips. We highly recommend starting it early in the morning (around 6, 7 am) to avoid the heat and crowds. Please see details in https://centralvietnamguide.com/tour/golden-bridge-sunrise-tour / . “Sunset tour” is available as well, with the same price. See its itinerary in https://centralvietnamguide.com/tour/golden-hands-bridge-tour/ . However, due to weather at Ba Na Hills where the bridge’s located, we suggest the best option on the day before. By the way, all entrance fee and cable car are included in the tours.

My Son Sanctuary Tour from Hoi An

A visit to My Son sanctuary is a perfect half-day tour from Hoi An. It’s not really far away, and definitely worth sightseeing (not only about its world heritage site title). To avoid the heat and crowds, many travelers like getting there early in the morning, around 5 am. This  sunrise tour  also includes a local guide as normal. Later in the day, the sunset tour has the same purpose, but not for early birds. Joining a “classic tour” that departs at 8 or 9 am, it’s possible to witness full traditional performances at My Son’s public theatre.

Cycling Tours in Hoi An Countryside

Over such a long history, fortunately, Hoi An still keeps its countryside peaceful. We highly recommend a bicycle tour to discover this wonderful rural land. Following a local guide, travelers will cycle through villages on backroads where the traffic is low (or no traffic) and visit local families to know their life. Some activities and experiences are in the itinerary alike, such as basket boat ride in palm forest, making rice papers, etc. Read more information in https://centralvietnamguide.com/hoi-an-cycling-tours.

Hoi An Food Tours

Roaming around and tasting delicious local foods (especially street foods) is amongst the most interesting cultural experiences in Hoi An. Travelers can choose a food tour run by foodies in town, with a bicycle, motorcycle or by foot. Within some hours, they will show different dishes and tell stories (including Hoi An’s specialties, such as banh mi sandwich). It’s a great time to get insight into local culinary culture and ways of life. Of course, there’re many opportunities to take fun pictures. Late afternoon and evening is the best time. Browse  our Hoi An evening walking food tour  if you’re interested. For vegans and vegetarians, we have  Hoi An vegetarian food tour .

Sustainable Hội An- Sustainable Tourism with EMIC Hospitality

Amy Nguyen

At a glance

The Ancient town of Hội An in Central Vietnam is listed as a world UNESCO heritage site but with such titles comes great responsibility. It’s hard not to fall in love with the enchanting lanterns and fusion of Japanese and Vietnamese architecture of this ancient port town. Tourism reaps many economic benefits for surrounding communities but practicing responsible and sustainable behaviours is key to preserving such a location and connecting its visitors to the land for a memorable experience.

Forever a place in my heart – during my time in Hội An, I teamed up with EMIC Hospitality, the group pioneering sustainability in the town to learn more about their philosophy, explore their sites and see how they are putting their promises into action.

EMIC Hospitality was founded in 2012 and employs over 150 staff. They are passionate about the sustainability of the Ancient town, its culture, protecting the environment, and contributing to local communities.  Their mission across their three sites, E Village, The Field and Full Moon Town is to provide visitors with memorable dining experiences in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way. Their sustainability goals are driven by the intent to create environmental tourism not purely concerned with economic benefit but one that is sensitive to the environment and local cultures.

They work with local organic farms as well as health and safety distributors to ensure the highest of quality. Their awareness of the impact their sites have on the environment are leaps and bounds above many others in Hội An. It is evident from my time spent with the team their dedication to ecotourism is authentic. Whether it’s through the menu curation, sourcing of produce, the zero plastic philosophy or their support of the local Vietnamese communities, EMIC Hospitality demonstrates best in class.

In conversation with Ha, the Customer Services Manager, we spent hours over a delicious supper provided by EVillage talking about the mission of ethical tourism in Hội An and decimating this across the hospitality industry. Ha’s sentiment that education of their large team is the biggest priority in terms of changing mindset and propelling knowledge of the importance of sustainability throughout local people is something I wholly adhere to. The subsequent day I was fortunate enough to meet with the team again at the Field, set and tucked away in the rice paddies of Cam Tanh Commune, for a tour on how they bring their sustainable objectives to life.

How do they bring their mission to life?

  • The group work to reduce plastic in the supply chain wherever possible.
  • They separate their rubbish into 3 types, a rarity and progressive move for an establishment in Vietnam; compostable, recyclable and non-recyclable.
  • They create their own soap made from reused cooking oils! These are utilised across all three estates and are blended with coconut oil and essential oils such as lemongrass to create a lovely product.
  • In terms of how their ethos translates into food, they support local where appropriate and only source ingredients from suppliers with certifications to ensure safety and quality standards.
  • Excitingly, they are the only hospitality group to source many of their produce from one of Central Vietnam’s only organic farms, Thanh Dong Organic Farm. If you are ever in the area you can find out more about the farm and visiting here .
  • Respectful of seasons, their menu changes accordingly but also deploys unusual ingredients originating from the area including cassava noodles. This was done with the intention to re-ignite the cassava farming economy for locals and thus supporting the communities.
  • During events hosted at the Field they provide additional employment for the local workers, whether this is in preparation of the gardens or by driving the traditional Vietnamese basket boats for guests onto the site. For special events such as their Gala dinner they rent the surrounding land of the site owned by the rice growing community to stage the activity, thus providing them with an additional source of income. These local people also attend the event and are invited to meet with attendees sharing their local cultural traditions. This is best embodied during the below event:

  • The Field is their primary location for trialling new sustainable practices, whether it’s their composting hub or very excitingly their waste water treatment system.
  • Outside of their three sites they engage in sustainable tourism practices through other actions. EMIC Hospitality recognise the importance of collaboration to further the sustainability agenda in Hội An , they have teamed up with the social enterprise Green Youth Collective in running community based local tours for visitors to build long lasting connections.
  • GYC is a local social enterprise that operates in the city and sub regions of Hoi An World Heritage, Central Vietnam. Our strategic projects include Regenerative Gardening, Waste management & Sustainability Literacy – Sustainable skills Education. GYC has been pioneering the Waste management programme with hotel and restaurant businesses in Danang & Hoi An area since 2018. Until Feb 2020, we have recycled ~ 400kg of discarded room amenity soaps and 2 tons of linens; and recently started the Kitchen waste program. We provide jobs and nurture entrepreneurship for local youth and workers on waste management. GYC coordinates Hoi An Eco-city Working Group, a local network of solutions towards sustainability in waste management. We are also the implementing partner and technical consultant for waste management program by Hoi An Authority and Quang Nam Tourism Association.
  • In collaboration with the Hội An ’s local government, they hosted the first Sustainable Tourism Conference Quang Nam 2019. Here the conversation centred around zero plastic and zero waste tourism as well as how the area must act in order to avoid becoming a victim of its own success, as demonstrated by certain areas of neighbouring Thailand.

Final thoughts

Hội An by definition means peaceful city, but three years on from my initial visit I feel it could almost be the anthesis of this. You can access WiFi across the town, order a Grab food delivery to your hotel within 15 minutes, and often get stuck by the parade of tourists on tuk tuks in the Old Town. I found myself often escaping to the beach in pursuit of peace and this made me wonder the extent to which true authenticity can be preserved. Many times, such destinations become a victim of their own success, propelled by the UNESCO badge but unequipped to manage the tourism that comes with it. The saturation of the hospitality and accommodation industry in the town has meant that competition has pushed prices down, thus reducing the potential long-term profits for local business people. TripAdvisor is used as a local currency to attract custom from foreigners however frequently lacks legitimacy as many patrons of establishments will offer reduced rates/discounted meals in exchange for a positive review.

Having met with EMIC Hospitality, my faith in the possibilities for a place such as Hội An are restored. Their strategy has clearly created a triple win for stakeholders; the tourists, the locals and the company itself.

Their dedication to green practices, ethical sourcing and finding value from waste in their restaurants should be applauded and spread elsewhere in the local area. What is most valuable and powerful attribute in my opinion is their dedication to creating long-term support to the working Vietnamese community  and economy that are the back bone of this beautiful place.

EMIC Hospitality have 3 sites across the Hội An  region, they can be found here:

E Village, 79 Nguyen Phuc Chu, Minh An Ward Hội An  560000

Hoi An Travel Guide – Everything You Need to Know

by Charlotte Walton | Asia , Vietnam

Travel - Hoi An Night Markets

Hoi An was probably our favourite stop in Vietnam and I am here to share a few insights into this beautiful town. I have written a Hoi An Travel Guide with everything you need to know to fully explore this town. Read on to find out more about the Hoi An Lantern Festival, the ever-so popular tailoring parlours, the best things to do in Hoi An, and where to stay!

How to Get to Hoi An

You can only access Hoi An by road, as there is no airport nor train station in the town. However, the good news is, it is only an hours drive from Da Nang’s airport. The airport has domestic links to many places throughout Vietnam and also has a number of International flights landing here daily. You can get a taxi from Da Nang airport which can be pre-booked for 250,000 VND. If you are staying in Da Nang city, then I recommend getting an Uber to Hoi An. It will cost you half the price!

TIP! Ubers are a very controversial topic in Asia and are not always ‘accepted’ among the locals. Most airports/hotels cannot arrange an Uber to pick you up, so you must arrange this yourself.

We took an Uber and arrived at our hotel, Estuary Villa, which was on the outskirts of the main town. We were staying by the river that runs through Hoi An and were only a 5-minute bike ride from the beach. The hotel provided us with free bikes to use, to get around more freely and a free shuttle bus to/from town on a night.

Discovering the Beauty of Hoi An – Hoi An Travel Guide

When we arrived in Hoi An, we were amazed by the relaxing vibe it possessed. We had previously been in the busy city of Ho Chi Minh, stayed in the deserted town of Mui Ne, and back to another busy city, Da Nang. All of which were incredible places, but there was something different about Hoi An.

Hoi An was the first place that we felt such a loving, welcoming feeling. As we wandered through the streets, there were many people sitting outside in the cafes enjoying a few rays. The beach was also a nice treat as there aren’t too many available to the public throughout the country.

Our first night we made our way to town in the shuttle bus alongside a handful of lovely people who were staying in our hotel.  We arrived to see a busy town, full of colour and life.

There were lanterns everywhere, lighting up the streets. People wandered down each one completely mesmerised. The colours were endless, and everybody was stopping to take pictures. In the middle of the town runs the river. Many locals sit by the water selling floating candles to the passing tourists. They light them up and send them on their way, lighting up the entire place.

Hoi An Travel Guide

Try Local Food at the Street Markets

There is a big street market across the other side of the river, where locals are selling their handmade gifts, and homemade dishes. It is a perfect place to try a selection of Vietnamese cuisines as the choices are countless. Typically, that specific day I was craving, and had, a blooming banana pancake didn’t I. And some rice, of course, let’s not forget the rice! 😊

Hoi An Street Markets are definitely the best place to try samples of the local foods. It is easily the cheapest place to eat in Hoi An, and the food is cooked by their very own local families.

You may have heard of Hoi An before as it is ‘known’ for 2 main things: the Hoi An Lantern Festival, and the local tailoring shops.

Hoi An Lantern Festival

First of all, what is it? Hoi An already consists of hundreds, if not thousands of lanterns on a daily basis, so what makes this festival so special?

The Hoi An Lantern Festival is an event held on a monthly basis to celebrate the full moon. As many of you will know, the full moon plays a sacred role in the Buddhist calendar, as Buddah himself was born on a day of the full moon. The traditional beliefs that the full moon is a time to reflect on life decisions, relax and meditate, and most of all, worship their ancestors, is still honoured by hundreds of people throughout Asia to date.

The lanterns are a symbol of good luck, which locals have placed throughout the entire town, giving Hoi An its name: the town of Lanterns.

Hoi An Travel Guide

The festival is celebrated by lighting up the lanterns, and allowing them to float down the Thu Bon River, which runs through the centre of town. At 8pm all lights are turned off, leaving the lanterns to be the only source of light within the centre. Effectively, the lanterns light up the entire town, creating a magical glow and a lovely atmosphere. To accompany this, there is usually music being performed, games being played, and plenty of street food to go around.

TIP! The Hoi An Lantern Festival is held on the 14 th day of each lunar month.

If you can plan your trip around these dates I would highly recommend doing so. The Hoi An Lantern Festival is a great experience that shouldn’t be missed!

Tailor Made Clothes in Hoi An

I am not kidding when I say you can get absolutely ANYTHING made, and usually within 24-72 hours. When I say anything I mean dresses, to suits, to bikinis, accessories and even a pair of shoes.

These shops have become increasingly popular among tourists, as buying a tailor-made suit costs a third of the price compared to in our home countries. If you plan on getting something made (and you’re not a guy – it’s way easier for guys!) then have a plan before you get there. Make sure you have an idea about the design, colour, hem, etc. so you can beat the crowd and be prepared. If you are struggling, the ladies in the shops offer the best advice, so you are in good hands.

As it is becoming more popular, the locals are seeing an opportunity for an increase in price. Make sure to bring your bargaining head along with you, to keep things how you want them! Things vary in price but for example: we paid 1,356,645 VND ($80AUD) for a 3-piece suit and a silk tie!

TIP! There are hundreds of these parlours so make sure you shop around before you commit to buying anything. Chances are you can get the exact same thing down the street for $20AUD cheaper. It may not sound like a lot to you now, but $20AUD goes a long way in Vietnam! That can buy you 6 meals!

Best things to do in Hoi An

Visit hoi an at night.

If I haven’t made it clear already then, I’m doing a terrible job. The town is full of life, positive energy and a fantastic atmosphere. It is a must-do when in Hoi An

Hoi An Travel Guide

Hire a Bike

There are available bike tours which sound like a lot of fun. They are a great way to meet new people and explore the town in more depth. We hired bikes on our own which was still a good laugh. Everything is within a good distance so nothing is too far away

Hoi An Travel Guide

**Here’s a very attractive photo of myself from the day I hired a bike. The weather was beautiful, and all of a sudden it began to absolutely p*ss it down! It lasted a total of 10 seconds, but I was drenched to the bone! Oh, who doesn’t enjoy the tropical weather ;)**

Spend a Day at the Beach

The beaches in Hoi An are one of few that you will see throughout Vietnam. It is not a country known for its beaches, so when you find one – take advantage! There are many to choose from, so take a pick and enjoy your day 🙂

Indulge in Local Vietnamese Foods at the Hoi An Street Market

There is no better place for variety, and budget friendly foods.

Visit the Japanese Bridge

This bridge dates back to the 1500’s but has since has some reconstruction. It is not a huge tourist attraction, but it is a nice little place to visit for a quick stop.

Day Trip to My Son

The My Son Sanctuary is known as a UNESCO world heritage site and is around an hours’ drive from Hoi An on scooter. It is probably quicker if you get a taxi. This site has been massively affected over the years as the result of several wars. Unfortunately, the most recent war with the Americans has destroyed it even more. There are still plenty of ruins to rummage through and many have even been re-built. I would only recommend visiting My Son if you are interested in its history. There is an entrance fee of 150,000 VND, and a parking fee to park up on site.

green travel hoi an

Where to stay in Hoi An – Hoi An Travel Guide

There are tons of places to stay in Hoi An that suit all budget-levels. If you prefer to be by the beach, then I recommend staying on the outskirts of town. Most of the hostels/hotels offer transport into the town centre so you can visit as you please. Taxis are also cheap making the journey in and out affordable if these services aren’t available. If you’d like to be in the centre to have time to fully explore Hoi An, then there are also plenty of options here too. The centre is only 10-15 minutes to the beach, so either one works perfectly!

Hoi An Travel Guide

For a night in a hostel/budget hotel, prices range from 160,000 VND to 290,000 ($9-17AUD). If you fancy something more ‘fancy’, the prices will naturally be higher.

TIP! If you are in a couple, or are a couple of friends, it always works out better to stay in a hotel. The price is evidently split in two for the room, meaning you get the luxuries a hotel can give, but for the price of a hostel bed.

We stayed in the Estuary Villa Hotel on the outskirts of the main town. We were on a bit more of a budget than usual, as we were funding a whole 3months of travel. Luckily, you can find 3-4* hotels including breakfast for around $15AUD a night in Vietnam! We came across this place online and liked the look of it.

Hoi An Travel Guide

Hoi An Travel Guide

Hoi An Travel Guide

As we arrived we were greeted by the most welcoming staff. We were upgraded for free as there were spare rooms available. The hotel has its own pool and breakfast was also included. There was a free bike hire, so we could get to the nearest beach more easily.

We paid $56AUD for 2 nights, between the 2 of us. It worked out at $14AUD a night each. For this price we received a private double room with an ensuite bathroom, free breakfast, WIFI, access to an outdoor swimming pool, free bike rentals and a free shuttle bus to town on an evening.

This hotel was a lovely little spot to stay and we couldn’t recommend it enough. It was very small, with only around 20 rooms, but we could not have been made to feel more welcome.

Best Time to Visit Hoi An

The climate in Hoi An is warm year-round but is particularly dry from February to July. Make sure to avoid Vietnamese public holidays, especially TET, which is the biggest holiday of the year and causes shops and restaurants to close.

Recommendation: The monthly and extremely popular Hoi An Lantern Festival is beautiful but causes an insane amount of rubbish in its rivers. We recommend not attending.

In a controlled context with both domestic and international tourists choosing Hoi An as their top destination post-pandemic, ÊMM Hotel Hoi An took the lead in eco-friendly tourism and responsible tourism for both the environment and society. It also takes pride in receiving the 2022 Green Tourism Certification from Quang Nam Province.

In fact, the hotel optimizes many operational activities by saving electricity, water, limiting waste discharge, and encourages guests to participate through letters placed in rooms and through images of the hotel’s green activities displayed on waste separation bins and composting areas.

The ÊMM team also makes daily efforts to replace disposable items such as combs, toothbrushes, shampoo, and shower gel with reusable, easily recyclable materials. The use of plastic and nylon is unavoidable to some extent, but ÊMM Hotel Hoi An proactively classifies waste in the rooms for easy disposal.

Preparing for a fresh start

For Vietnamese, Tet is a nostalgic time, filled with childhood memories of visits from relatives, delicious treats, lucky money, new clothes, and days of fun with the whole family together. Every year local people prepare weeks in advance for Tet Nguyen Dan , the morning feast on the first day of the Lunar New Year.

Pagodas, houses, and shops all over Hoi An are cleaned, rinsed, and repaired. Flower markets, and food stalls spring up on sidewalks. Housewives shop for ingredients for family feasts, adorn altars and decorate the home. Men settle dues, get haircuts, and wash their motorcycles.

The sight of kumquat trees bouncing on the backs of motorbikes is a sign Tet is around the corner. Every home in Hoi An displays a kumquat tree in its entrance as a symbol of fruitfulness and prosperity. Kumquat trees are carefully grown to yield big, orange fruits, and the branches are often hung with greeting cards and lucky symbols.

Fresh flowers and plants are an important part of Tet decorations. You’ll see marigolds, sunflowers, daisies, and chrysanthemums in noble yellow hues all over Hoi An. New year wishes are penned in calligraphy and draped from doorways. Local people in Hoi An also welcome the holiday with lanterns, red envelopes, bamboo poles, and strings of fireworks.

Many special foods are served during the Tet holiday, but pride of place is always given to banh chung and banh tet . These steamed sticky rice cakes, filled with crushed mung beans and fatty pork, are savored with pickled onions and hot green tea. Families stock up on watermelons and fruits, Vietnamese ham, whole boiled chickens, Tet jams, and dried fruits for the coming feasts.

Marking the holidays together

By the time the day before Tet arrives the whole province and country is ready to celebrate together. Everyone returns to their hometowns in time to be with parents and grandparents. Last-minute treats and decorations are added, and the scent of incense fills Hoi An’s streets as countless altars are set up to honor ancestors and the kitchen gods.

In Hoi An, the last night of the outgoing year is marked with dances and festivities in the Hoi An Ancient Town. Beautifully dressed families with children wearing colorful new ao dai join folk games and snap photos. The excitement builds with special shows and songs in the hours before midnight, and then fireworks explode above the tiled roofs of the Ancient Town, the Thu Bon River, and the crowds of happy people.

The first days of any new year are an auspicious time. Families stay home and feast together. Elders give lucky money to young ones, and everyone shares wishes for the new year. Most people visit pagodas and communal houses, and stop by relatives and teachers. After the new year has been properly ushered in, the holiday is for relaxing and having fun together.

Nicki Minaj 's husband, Kenneth Petty , is asking a court for permission to travel out of the country so he can join her on tour in Europe ... and he says he'll be needed overseas.

According to court docs, obtained by TMZ, KP says he isn't just looking to globe-trot with Nicki for fun -- on the contrary, he says it's necessary to join her on the European leg of her "Pink Friday 2" world tour for a bunch of reasons, mainly to provide childcare for their son.

The start date he lists for the anticipated travel schedule is April 17, 2024 ... and he says there will be stops in Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Austria, Ireland, Switzerland, and Romania.

Petty says he plans to be back in the U.S. by July 14, 2024, right after the tour wraps up -- and is hoping for a green light to join his wife ASAP.

According to the docs, his probation officer hasn't raised any objections to his travel request. However, if Kenneth's request gets approved, he'll likely need to provide the officer with a detailed travel itinerary and also check in once he's back.

As previously reported, Kenneth is currently serving 3 years probation for failing to register as a sex offender in California. That's the reason he even has to jump through these hoops.

A judge has yet to sign off -- and the court denies his request, Kenneth's gotta stay put.
