Known as the “Crown of the Blue Ridge Mountains ,” Blowing Rock NC is widely regarded as one of the most charming North Carolina villages.

Located in the NC High Country 10 miles south of Boone and 24 miles east of Banner Elk, the town of Blowing Rock was established in 1889.

The population hasn’t grown much, from 300 residents when it was founded to approximately 1300 year-round residents today. But those numbers soar in summer, when people head for the hills to escape the heat and humidity.

The town was named after The Blowing Rock attraction, an iconic geological formation that provides sensational views of the surrounding summits, forest , and the Johns River Gorge.

While that remains the area’s oldest and most popular tourist hotspot, downtown Blowing Rock is also home to an extensive assortment of other activities.

And with the Blue Ridge Parkway just minutes away, the small town makes a great base for exploring the entire region.

Read on for our in-depth guide to the best things to do in Blowing Rock, including all of the area’s best attractions, restaurants , hiking trails, and Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks.

Appalachian Fossil Museum in Blowing Rock NC

1. Appalachian Fossil Museum

Part of the family-friendly Doc’s Rocks Gem Mine attraction, the Appalachian Fossil Museum  comprises the largest privately-owned collection of fossils, minerals, and gemstones in North Carolina.

Founder Randy “Doc” McCoy has had a passion for paleontology ever since his mom introduced him to fossils as a young boy.

After a stint in the US Army as an Emergency Field Surgeon, he went back to college, majored in Geology, and has since taught Appalachian State University students.

Moving into an expansive Tanger Outlets location in 2020 gave McCoy and his team a chance to showcase treasured finds from decades of digs and collection efforts.

His collection is currently valued at over $10 million, and includes rare fossils and high-end reproductions of dinosaurs you’ll recognize from Jurassic Park films.

The museum ‘s most prized pieces include the skull of a massive prehistoric alligator, which is perched above an equally large tyrannosaurus rex skull for size comparison.

You’ll also see a triceratops skull found in Montana, as well as a dromaeosaurus and a smilodon (a.k.a. saber-toothed tiger).

After the informative tour, you can pan for gold or gemstones in their North Carolina gem mine , play a round of Paleo Putt-Putt, or shop for souvenirs in the gift shop.

Snowboarding at Appalachian Ski Mountain near Blowing Rock NC

2. Appalachian Ski Mtn.

Blowing Rock is located 8 miles south of Boone in the NC High Country. The area’s abundance of Christmas tree farms and ski resorts make it a very popular destination at Christmas time and all through the winter.

Although many of the region’s best snow skiing and snow tubing resorts are located closer to Banner Elk , Appalachian Ski Mtn is just 4 miles from the heart of downtown Blowing Rock.

The second oldest ski area in North Carolina , Appalachian Ski Mountain was originally known as the Blowing Rock Ski Lodge and opened in 1962-63.

After new owners bought the property in 1968, they renamed it and opened the French-Swiss Ski College to provide professional skiing instruction the following winter .

Today, the Appalachian mountain offers 11 ski trails (2 beginner, 6 intermediate, 3 advanced trails) and 3 terrain parks.

They’re accessed via two quad chairs, a double chair, a handle tow, and a conveyor lift.

Their entire snow skiing area is illuminated for nighttime skiing and is 100% covered by snowmaking, with one of the terrain parks getting completely rebuilt every week.

Sunset at the Blowing Rock in Blowing Rock NC

3. The Blowing Rock

The oldest tourist attraction in North Carolina (and namesake for the town of Blowing Rock), The Blowing Rock is a unique geological formation located 3000 feet above John’s River Gorge.

It was named for the area’s whipping winds, which led Ripley’s Believe It Or Not to call it “the only place in the world where snow falls upside down.

The legend of Blowing Rock is a classic lover’s leap tale involving a Cherokee  brave who jumped to his death, only for the wind to blow him back up to his Chickasaw maiden.

The famous outcropping offers spectacular scenic vistas that include iconic North Carolina mountains such as Mount Mitchell and Grandfather, Hawksbill, and Table Rock Mountains.

It’s arguably the coolest selfie spot in all of Western North Carolina .

But there’s lots of other things to do at The Blowing Rock, including spectacular overlooks, a man-made waterfall , two picturesque hiking trails, a lovely picnic area, and a historical gallery of Blowing Rock photos.

There’s also a 3000-square-foot gift shop, plus a Gorge View Annex building that features a snack bar and locally crafted goods, and can be rented for private events.

4. Blowing Rock Art & History Museum

If you really want to get a feel for a mountain town, you really need to learn more about its history and culture .

The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum is a great place for both, offering a look at the past and present state of Southern Appalachian heritage and history through an array of activities, exhibits, and educational programming.

Opened in 2011, the gorgeously designed community cultural center features a small but impressive exhibit on the history of Blowing Rock and the High Country. It’s full of nostalgia , including antique signs, photos, and more.

But they also feature myriad galleries full of fantastic artwork, including paintings by Pulitzer Award-winning landscape artist Philip Moose, glass sculptures of wildflowers by Ronnie Hughes (ends August 21, 2022), and more.

They also offer fascinating special exhibits such as “ Jagged Path: the African Diaspora in Western North Carolina in Craft, Music, and Dance ,” which runs in the Fort Gallery through October 22, 2022.

Timberlake's Restaurant at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock NC

5. Sample the Best Blowing Rock Restaurants

Named one of the South’s 10 Best Mountain Towns by readers of Southern Living, Blowing Rock  tourism was growing by more than 10% annually before Covid shut down the industry in 2020.

So it comes as no surprise that there are lots of great Blowing Rock restaurants for visitors to choose from.

Our favorite restaurant in Blowing Rock is Timberlake’s Restaurant at Chetola Resort , which opened in the historic Manor House of former owner J. Luther Snyder in 2012.

With 3 dining rooms and a lakefront patio, the upscale eatery serves up refined fare that includes Grilled Elk , tender Angus steaks, and delectable desserts.

Other great upscale places to eat in Blowing Rock include the Storie Street Grille (try the Loaded Sweet Potato Tots and Fig & Balsamic Flatbread), Bistro Roca (the Pork Lettuce Wraps and Lobster Mac & Cheese are divine), and  Hellbender Bed & Beverage  (we loved the Beef Tenderloin Sandwich and NC Trout plate).

6. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway passes two miles north of downtown Blowing Rock, so the town is a perfect base for exploring some of our favorite overlooks, hiking trails, and parks  located along the 469-mile scenic route.

Our favorite Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks in the area include the Ravens Rocks Overlook (MP 289.5, a great place to catch the sunset), the expansive Yadkin Valley Overlook (MP 289.8), the Thunder Hill Overlook (MP 290.4), and the Sims Pond Overlook (MP 295.9, a great place for photos of reflections on the water).

7. Explore Downtown Blowing Rock

If you enjoy charming little  NC mountain towns such as Waynesville , Burnsville , and Little Switzerland , you’ll love exploring downtown Blowing Rock.

Though Moravian Bishop August Gottlieb Spangenberg visited the area in 1752, the real roots of the town began in the mid-1800’s, when the Greene family settled on a site that eventually became the Green Park Inn property.

Other Scotch-Irish families soon arrived, and Blowing Rock NC was incorporated as a town in 1889.

Today, the tiny town of around 1,500 permanent residents swells to 8,000+ residents in the summertime, when the cool climate and sensational scenery of the High Country draws visitors north from Asheville and beyond.

The downtown area is eminently walkable, with numerous  Blowing Rock hotels close to an array of unique boutiques, art galleries, antique stores, and gift shops.

There are also dozens of great Blowing Rock restaurants to choose from, including favorites such as The Speckled Trout, Bistro Roca, and Timberlake’s.

Grandfather Mountain Mile High Swinging Bridge in Banner Elk NC

8. Grandfather Mountain Attraction

When people refer to Grandfather Mountain, it can get a little confusing because there are several different elements to the area.

The first is the iconic mountain itself: At 5,946 feet, it’s the tallest mountain on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains range.

It was formed more than 750 million years ago, and it features some of the oldest geological formations on earth.

Then there’s the ever-popular Grandfather Mountain State Park, which encompasses 2,456 acres of backcountry wilderness and 12 miles of trails.

There’s also a privately-owned, non-profit Grandfather Mountain attraction that requires an entry fee.

It ranges from $9 for kids ages 4-12 to $20 for seniors and $22 for adults, and proceeds help to support their conservation initiatives.

In return, you can access additional hiking trails , visit the Nature Museum and Wildlife Habitats (including native species such as Bald Eagles, Black Bears, Cougars, and Elk), and soak in stunning scenic views via the 228-foot-long Mile High Swinging Bridge.

9. Grandfather Mountain State Park

Easily ranking among the most popular NC State Parks , the 2,456-acre Grandfather Mountain State Park is located about 16 miles from the heart of downtown Blowing Rock.

Towering nearly a mile above the North Carolina Piedmont, this International Biosphere Reserve features more than a dozen distinct ecological zones that are home to 70+ species of rare and endangered plants and animals.

There are 12 miles of hiking trails there, including the Black Rock Trail, Daniel Boone Scout Trail, Grandfather Trail, Profile Trail, Nuwati Trail, and more.

Most of these trails are rated as strenuous in terms of difficulty, and some even require climbing ladders and scrambling over rock. But the views they provide at nearly 6,000 feet of elevation are breathtaking.

If you do choose to visit the park, prepare accordingly, as it’s known for some of the most severe weather and challenging trails in the southeastern United States.

Glen Burney Falls near Boone NC

10. Hike to Glen Burney Falls

Although it’s rated as somewhat strenuous due to elevation changes, this 2.7-mile round-trip hiking trail is worth doing for the 3 wondrous waterfalls you’ll see along the way.

The trail starts at Broyhill Park in the Annie Cannon Gardens  (which feature beautiful wildflowers in spring and summer), following New Year’s Creek to Glen Burney Falls, Glen Marie Falls, and Cascade Falls.

Along the way you’ll pass “The Ruins,” Blowing Rock’s sewage treatment system from the 1920s.

Note that these waterfalls drop off the side of the Blue Ridge Escarpment into John’s River Gorge, and the areas near the top require extra caution (especially after recent rains).

But the trek is worth it once you reach the stunning Glen Burney Falls, which tumbles 50 feet down a rock face into the tranquil pool below.

Fall Colors on Price Lake at Julian Price Memorial Park

11. Julian Price Memorial Park

Located at Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 297, just over 4 miles from downtown Blowing Rock, Julian Price Memorial Park is our favorite park in the North Carolina High Country.

Situated at the foot of Grandfather Mountain, the 4,200-acre parcel was formally owned by NC insurance giant Julian Price, who used it as a recreational retreat for his employees.

After his death in 1946, his heirs donated the land to the National Park Service as a memorial.

The centerpiece of the park is the picturesque Price Lake, which spans 47 acres and is open to kayaking and canoeing, fishing, and hiking the 2.7-mile Price Lake Trail.

Price Park offers easy access to other excellent hiking trails , including the 2.3-mile Green Knob Trail, the 5.5-mile Boone Fork Trail, and the epic Mountains-to-Sea Trail (which intersects the Boone Fork Trail).

The park also features more than 100 sites in its picnic area, and seasonal overnight camping at one of the best campgrounds in North Carolina  (which has 197 campsites ).

Linn-Cove-Viaduct-Blue-Ridge-Parkway-

12. Linn Cove Viaduct

Located at Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 304.4, the Linn Cove Viaduct is easily the road’s most impressive engineering feat. It’s also the feature that took the longest to complete.

Construction of the Parkway began in 1935, and conservationists stressed the importance of preserving the area around Grandfather Mountain by creating a viaduct to avoid the damage a cut-and-fill road would cause.

Although the rest of the 469-mile Parkway was completed by 1966, the 7.7-mile section that snakes around the massive mountain wasn’t finished until 1983, at a cost of $10 million.

Today the Linn Cove Viaduct remains one of the most popular spots on the epic scenic route, particularly when the vivid fall colors of North Carolina begin to pop on the surrounding hills.

It’s also one of our favorite places to photograph. The best angles come from the side of the road, the trail leading from the Linn Cove Visitor Center, and the summit of the Rough Ridge Trail .

Flat Top Manor in Moses H. Cone Memorial Park

Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 120-year-old property also includes some 25 miles of horse carriage trails, apple orchards , and three beautiful lakes that Cone stocked with bass and trout.

Flat Top Manor (a.k.a. Cone Manor), which recently underwent a significant renovation , offers interpretive history elements and is also home to an impressive gallery of folk art   from the Southern Highland Craft Guild.

Tucked away in the heart of downtown (behind the bustling Blowing Rock City Park), tranquil Broyhill Park is home to Mayview Lake.

Hiking the Rough Ridge Trail with Peak Fall colors

16. Hike the Rough Ridge Trail

Located at Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 302.8, the Rough Ridge Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails in North Carolina for a very good reason.

Starting from the overlook’s parking lot, the trail heads into the forest at the base of Grandfather Mountain, crosses a bridge over a small waterfall , then heads 1/3-mile uphill, gaining 480 feet of elevation along the way.

There you’ll find a boardwalk leading to an exceptional overlook of the surrounding mountains , with Grandfather to your right, the Linn Cove Viaduct below, and rolling Blue Ridge summits as far as the eye can see.

From there, it’s another 1/2-mile up to the 4,773-foot Rough Ridge summit, where you’ll find lots of large boulders perfect for taking a break, soaking in the stellar scenery, and perhaps having a picnic.

Note that this area (especially its parking lot) can get crowded, even on weekdays, in peak fall season . We recommend arriving before 10AM if you want a little elbow room on the trail.

Sunrise at the Thunder Hill Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock NC

17. Watch the Sunrise at Thunder Hill Overlook

The Thunder Hill Overlook may not be as well-known as Blue Ridge Parkway attractions such as Craggy Gardens , Stone Mountain , or Mabry Mill in Virginia .

But for our money, the overlook at BRP milepost 290.4 offers one of the most exceptional sunrise views in Western North Carolina .

We arrived in complete darkness, steaming cups of coffee in hand, and huddled together to watch the vivid orange and yellow glow gradually illuminate the rolling hills of the NC Piedmont below.

The rolling fog looked like a milky white ocean in the morning light. making for spectacular sunrise photos like the one above.

18. Spend a Day at Tweetsie Railroad

For a mixture of family adventure and historical context, visiting Tweetsie Railroad is another fun thing to do in Blowing Rock with kids.

Locomotive No. 12– a.k.a. Tweetsie– was one of the original passenger trains that began service into Boone NC in 1919.

It’s the only one that wasn’t sold for scrap after the ET&WNC Railroad closed up shop in 1950.

Today, the historic steam-powered locomotive is the star of this Wild West theme park, which also includes live music , fairground rides , a small zoo, and experiential activities such as gold panning.

There’s also another narrow-gauge steam engine here, #190, which was transferred from Alaska’s White Pass & Yukon Railroad.

The annual  Tweetsie Railroad Christmas is an especially popular event, with thousands of colorful lights, holiday themed performances, photos with Santa, and more.

Mary Gabbett at the Chetola Spa in Blowing Rock North Carolina

19. Visit the Spa at Chetola Resort

As mentioned above, the 78-acre  Chetola Resort & Lodge is our favorite place to stay in Blowing Rock.

But even if you’re not staying there as a guest, the NC mountain resort still offers some exceptional amenities, including Timberlake’s Restaurant, Headwaters Pub, and the Spa at Chetola Resort.

Tucked back behind the lodge , right next to the indoor pool, the spa offers a broad array of services. They  include massages, facials, nail treatments, cosmetic applications, and a hair salon.

We enjoyed a relaxing couples massage there, and the spa treatment proved perfect for helping us both feel reconnected and rejuvenated.

It was a great way to end our romantic getaway , at the tail end of a busy 2-week Blue Ridge Parkway road trip.

Located within the Pisgah National Forest, this hike is short but strenuous. It’s probably best to leave the kids at home for this one. However, there are many boulders to sit on along the way to take in the landscape and many travelers bring picnics to enjoy along the trail.

If you’re looking to prolong your hike, the Rough Ridge Lookout is part of two longer hiking trails: the 13 mile Tanawha Trail and the much longer Mountains-to-the-Sea Trail. If you choose to take this route, you can go north to Julian Price Park, or head south to Beacon Heights along the Linn Cove Viaduct. Don’t forget your camera to capture the beauty of this one-of-a-kind view!

Drive Over Linn Cove Viaduct

Also located on Grandfather Mountain, the Linn Cove Viaduct is accessed through the Blue Ridge Parkway, making this a charming attraction near Blowing Rock.

The Linn Cove Viaduct is situated on the face of Grandfather Mountain and serves as the “missing link” to the Blue Ridge Parkway. This seven mile stretch was delayed for twenty years due to the great problem-solving task of continuing the road while preserving the habitat and natural splendor of the area. Engineers, architects, and environmentalists worked together tirelessly to bring the Blue Ridge Parkway to completion and in 1987 the engineering marvel of the Linn Cove Viaduct was opened to the world.

About a twenty minute drive from the heart of Blowing Rock, you’ll see extraordinary mountain views right from the comfort of your car. On the south side of the viaduct, visitors can enjoy walking trails and the Linn Cove Visitors Center, which is open seasonally. Make sure you check their website for times prior to your visit.

Tweetsie Railroad

For a day of family-centered fun, there is no better place place than the Tweetsie Railroad, one of the best things to do in Blowing Rock with kids.

There is no shortage of excitement and adventure for visitors of all ages at Tweetsie Railroad. Visitors can ride these special trains during regular park operation and special events. The park itself is open seasonally from April through late October, however Tweetsie runs special events year-round, like a Halloween themed Ghost Train experience, or their special Tweetsie Christmas during the winter holidays!

Moses H. Cone Memorial Park

Known as one of the quintessential attractions in Blowing Rock, Moses H. Cone Memorial Park is a great spot for exploring the stunning natural beauty and history of the area. Plan to make a day of it during your visit here – there is so much to do and see!

Moses Cone was a self-made man in the textile industry, earning the nickname “the Denim King” during his career. He and his wife, Bertha, made their home, Flat Top Manor (see more below), in Blowing Rock, where they could use their wealth to help preserve and enrich the land.

The park offers about 25 miles of beautiful carriage roads, which are flanked by flowers of all kinds as you drive or walk through. The area is most famous for a variety of rhododendron plantings, and the lush trees ranging from white pines, hemlocks, and sugar maples to apple trees that at one time produced prize winning apples.

Visitors can enjoy leisurely hiking throughout the park and wander through the remains of the old apple orchards, while admiring the outstanding views of the surrounding mountains. All trails are multi-purpose – cycling, horseback riding, and (in appropriate weather) cross-country skiing are all encouraged in the park, which is only a five minute drive from downtown Blowing Rock.

Sign at the entrance of Moses H. Cone Memorial Park.

Located within Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, Bass Lake is a premier destination that deserves its own day of exploration. Nestled within the surrounding mountains and forests, Bass Lake is famous for its beauty and the exceptional hiking in the area.

Bass Lake offers two spectacular trails that are suitable for a variety of visitors. Try the Bass Lake Loop, a leisurely hike, which is wheelchair accessible and kid-friendly. Horses and bikes are not allowed on this trail, so bring your best walking shoes with you!

Bass Lake’s most famous trail is known as The Maze, a mystifying trail of winding loops through the forest landscape. The Maze runs just shy of four miles, and is a great hike for all skill levels. Dogs are allowed in the area, but they must be kept on a leash. Bring a picnic to enjoy at the water’s edge after your hike!

Fishing is also a popular year-round pastime at Bass Lake. Boats are not permitted on the water, but there are many designated fly fishing areas along the trails. Trout and bluegill are the most frequent catches here, and guests are allowed to keep four fish per fishing session.

Mystery Hill

For an attraction rich in excitement and adventure, look no further than Mystery Hill, one of the best things to do in Blowing Rock with kids! This unique attraction pairs indoor and outdoor activities with scientific marvels that the whole family can enjoy!

Walk through their interactive attractions that showcase science in a fun way. Check out the Natural Gravitational Anomaly area, where water can flow uphill! In the Hall of Mystery, guests can lose their shadow AND learn how to fly – wow! Throw a tomahawk and take the bull riding challenge – you can do it all at Mystery Hill.

After you’ve walked through the indoor exhibits and attractions, take your adventure outdoors for a stroll around the Middle Fort Greenway Trail. This trail connects Blowing Rock to nearby Boone and is a popular spot for hiking and biking. When snack time rolls around, stop by Front Porch Eats at Mystery Hill for hand-dipped ice cream, mason jar milkshakes, or homemade Belgian waffles. About a 15 minute drive from downtown, a day spent at Mystery Hill is certain to be filled with fun!

Flat Top Manor

Also located within Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, Flat Top Manor is the home of the park’s namesake himself. Built in 1901 at the height of the Gilded Age, this twenty room mansion is an outstanding example of the Colonial Revival-style of architecture. The home was built with idea of replicating the famous Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC.

Today, the manor houses the Southern Highland Craft Guild, which means a variety of locally made treasures are available to take home! Shop handmade bowls, table wear, woven clothing and other crafts on display in the first floor rooms. On special summer days, craft demonstrations are available for visitors to watch and take part in.

Ranger-led tours are available in the summer months to help guests learn more about the Cone family and the estate. After you’ve explored the many rooms of the house, venture outside to journey through the family cemetery, apple orchard, and carriage house barn.

Flat Top Manor also hosts special events throughout the year. Make sure to check their website to see what awaits you on your visit!

Julian Price Memorial Park

At the foot of Grandfather Mountain, about an 8 minute drive from downtown, sits Julian Price Memorial Park, a majestic adventure and one of the most popular Blowing Rock attractions.

Boasting one of the largest picnic areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway (more than 100 sites!), this is a great place to bring the family for a day of fun in the great outdoors. Hike the Tanawha Trail, a 13 mile trail moving through the park to Beacon Heights. Price Lake offers guests a chance to enjoy a day on the water – rent a boat or canoe to cruise around, or try your hand at fishing in the lake!

Julian Price Memorial Park is notable for offering the best (and largest) campground in the area. The site is open seasonally, usually between May and October, and accommodates both RV and tent camping. Most sites are equipped with grills, lantern poles, and picnic tables. Primitive backcountry camping is also available in select places within the park.

Glen Burney Trail

If you’d like to take a hike without leaving downtown Blowing Rock, Glen Burney Trail is the hike for you! While this trail is closest to the center of town, it is a strenuous hike and not suitable for inexperienced hikers.

The trailhead is located near Mayview Lake, and is about 3 miles roundtrip. Be prepared to scramble over rocks and tree roots on this trail. Glen Burney Trail is know to be wet and slippery, even in dry weather, so make sure you wear appropriate shoes. Even though it’s a relatively short hike, there is a 600 foot elevation gain along the way.

Hikers are treated to views of three waterfalls along the path on this historic trail. Photos show evidence of the trail being in use as early as 1895, but the trail is believed by locals to have been constructed in the mid-1800’s. Hike into history in the heart of Blowing Rock at Glen Burney Trail!

Blowing Rock Brewery

To taste the best beer in Blowing Rock, head to the aptly named Blowing Rock Brewery. Opened in 2013, Blowing Rock Brewery is committed to producing beer that showcases the best of the mountains, by using sustainable brewing techniques and sourcing local ingredients.

The Blowing Rock Ale House, located in downtown, is the place to try the best brews of the season. With a full restaurant menu featuring outstanding dishes like Brisket Tacos and Duck Wing Drumettes, their special take on hot wings, you can have your beer and satisfy your appetite, too.

Blowing Rock Brewery produces many core beers that are always available. We recommend trying trying the Cloud Rise IPA, with fruity hints of pineapple and orange, or the Fresh Trail Golden Lager, a crisp and silky beer that transports you straight to the base of a waterfall. Specialty beers are on constant rotation, so you’ll be assured with something new to try on every visit. Past favorites include Big Chocolate Porter, with a bold, robust flavor and Roasted Pumpkin Spiced Ale, perfect for crisp autumn evenings on the mountain!

Kids and adults alike enjoy the adventure and atmosphere of this adorable mountain town. Bring your curiosity and let Blowing Rock take care of the rest!

15 Best Things To Do In Blowing Rock, North Carolina

This inviting North Carolina community is full of charm.

Leigh Ann Henion is a writer and photographer based in western North Carolina. Her essays and articles have appeared in Washington Post Magazine, Smithsonian, Oxford American, Orion, Preservation, Southern Living, and a variety of other publications. Her debut book – Phenomenal – was published by Penguin Press in March 2015.

Where To Eat And Drink

Where to stay.

Author Jan Karon is shy to admit that her fictional town of Mitford is based on Blowing Rock, North Carolina, but residents are convinced of the fact. Karon started writing her popular novels when she was living there, and many local attractions (along with the lush Blue Ridge scenery ) make appearances in her heartwarming stories. "Mitford would simply like to be the pause that refreshes," writes the author in At Home in Mitford , her 1994 novel and the first in a series of 14 beloved books set in the fictional town.

Regardless of whether Mitford was born purely of her imagination or based on this particular North Carolina locale, people in Blowing Rock know that, in real life, their town delivers .

Shop for Gifts

Blowing Rock's storybook downtown is lined with fun boutiques, antique stores, galleries, and gift shops. Stroll down Main Street and step into the purple-painted boutique Take Heart to browse for clothing, jewelry, or a sentimental gift for your mom or sister. Neaco , an unexpectedly funky home decor and gift shop, stocks fun barware, wall art, novelty gifts, and home accessories. The glass atrium at the Last Straw lures shoppers in for silk flowers, garden-themed home decor, wind spinners, and fountains. It's also a popular spot to shop for Christmas ornaments and holiday decor.

Stock up on Cabin Decor

If you've been hunting for treasures for your mountain home , a stop at Cabin Fever is mandatory. It's all here, whether you're looking for a cedar-log headboard, home decor featuring black bears and speckled trout, tables topped with tree slices, or antler-shaped lamps. Right next door, the aptly-named Rustic carries hand-crafted furniture, mountain-themed art, vintage finds, pottery, and gifts.

Stop at Blowing Rock's Cultural Corner

Head down to Blowing Rock's "cultural corner" at the far end of Main Street, where the former home of artist Elliott Daingerfield now serves as an exhibit space run by the Blowing Rock Historical Society. Edgewood Cottage displays the work of different high country artists each week, so there is always something new to see (or buy, if you find that perfect photograph, piece of pottery, or painting). The Blowing Rock Art & History Museum is right next door and open Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Spend Some Time in the Park

Every summer, locals and tourists alike line up for ice cream from Kilwin's , where a one-scoop order brings a serving that looks like three. In high season, be prepared to wait for your mint chocolate chip; the crowd sometimes spills out onto Main Street. Once you have a waffle cone in hand, it's tradition to vie for a comfy bench in Blowing Rock Memorial Park . Besides serving as a great spot for people-watching, this park is the hub for many events like Art in the Park, live concerts, Winterfest ice sculpting, and the farmers market.

Take the Kids to Tweetsie

This nostalgic, Wild-West theme park is fun for younger kids and a hoot for the adults, too. You can visit Tweetsie Railroad from April to December (the theme park is only open on weekends in off-season months). In October, the historic steam locomotive transforms into the Ghost Train, while Christmas lights and Santa are a major draw in November and December.

Visit The Moses H. Cone Memorial Park

The Blue Ridge Parkway weaves away from town toward the former country abode of Moses Cone, a textile entrepreneur of the Gilded Age. Located at milepost 294, his 3,500-acre estate has carriage trails that are still frequented by horses, as well as a mansion that's now home to the Southern Highland Craft Guild . In warmer months, wood-carvers and textile artisans take turns providing demonstrations on the front porch of the Colonial-era Revival mansion. Inside, a gift shop features the work of around 150 regional craftspeople.

Ellen Schaller, who manages Moses Cone Manor, believes that all the beautiful scenery surrounding Blowing Rock naturally lends itself to creativity. "Artists get a lot of inspiration from their environment, and then they translate that into their work," she says. "The mountains tend to attract people who appreciate nature, and the spirit of the landscape is in many of the pieces we have here."

Go on a Winery Tour

Historically, Western North Carolina has been known for its fast-running moonshine , but now it's also gaining a new reputation as wine country. There are three wineries within easy driving distance of Blowing Rock: Grandfather Vineyard & Winery , nestled at the base of Grandfather Mountain in nearby Banner Elk; Linville Falls Winery in Newland, where visitors can enjoy events such as live music and "yoga in the vineyard"; and Banner Elk Winery & Villa , also located in the community whose name it shares. Both Grandfather and Linville Falls are family-run wineries. (Grandfather's staff even includes popular "Bordeaux Collie" Casey, as well as a few other vineyard dogs and canine sidekicks.)

Wine and Dine at a Bistro

After an afternoon of wine sampling, you may want to move on to the second portion of "wine and dine." The best way to do exactly that is to make evening reservations at a local favorite restaurant like Bistro Roca . Eat at the Inn

Another great dinner spot, The Restaurant at Gideon Ridge Inn offers more of an experience than just a meal. You'll have to book a month ahead of time to ensure you get a table at this cozy restaurant, but the extra planning is well worth it. The menu changes daily, so you're in for a treat whenever you visit. You can also book a room in the country house hotel to stay in beautifully appointed rooms surrounded by wooded scenery.

Grab Lunch at The Speckled Trout

It's hard to miss The Speckled Trout, which lies right at the entrance of town and has an umbrella-covered patio that is often jam-packed. Needless to say, you'll want to make a reservation to get in. The highlight is, of course, the mountain trout, and you can enjoy it crusted in almonds or crackers, smoked, blackened, or palometa-style.

Relax in the Spa at Chetola Resort

There are plenty of inexpensive vintage hotels and cabins in town, but if luxury relaxation is what you're after, you can spend the afternoon shooting clays or enjoying the spa offerings at Chetola Resort at Blowing Rock (pictured above). The resort village has all the amenities (and wooded views) you could want from a mountain escape, plus the Chetola Sporting Reserve for sporting activities and Timberlake's Restaurant, where you can order North Carolina mountain trout in a lemon herb sauce after a starter of Southern pimiento cheese or fried oysters.

Venture To Stay at a Vineyard in Banner Elk

Banner Elk Winery & Villa' s accommodations offer high-thread count luxury, but it's their blueberry patch that best reveals traditional High Country character. You're invited to handpick fruit by the gallon, but there's no attendant. Instead, they utilize an honor system that seems like something straight out of the Mitford stories. Just leave your payment in a red mailbox standing near the entrance. To get a taste of local grapes, you can also experience daily tastings and flights with pours of the winery's vintages.

"The High Country has an easy pace of life," says Lisa Koch, property manager at Banner Elk Winery. "It's around 70 degrees when it's sunny. All three wineries in the area have covered porches. Grandfather has a river. We have a lake. People come here for the tastings, sure, but they're really coming to enjoy summer. Life's good in the mountains."

Visitors to Blowing Rock will experience just that (and likely much more) when they set their sights on this High Country treasure. Life is good in the mountains, and it's waiting to welcome you with open arms.

Blowing Rock NC Travel Guide – Top Things To Do

We really love Blowing Rock NC, and have a been a number of times over the past few years.   Blowing Rock, called the "Crown of the Blue Ridge", is well known for its award winning downtown (often referenced as one of North Carolina's most scenic mountain villages), surrounding attractions and outdoor things to do.

Blowing Rock is also just a short drive from the larger town of Boone NC, where additional attractions, dining and shopping options are available.

Our first visit to Blowing Rock NC was a few years ago, when we visited the Land of Oz near Banner Elk.   The hotels in Banner Elk were full, so we elected to stay in Blowing Rock, and really enjoyed our stay and the local restaurants.

We've returned a few times to visit Tweetsie Railroad , and to explore some of the outdoor things to see and do as well.  We really enjoy the small town feel, and like knowing we're just a quick drive to Boone if we need anything a larger town can provide.

Where is Blowing Rock NC?

Blowing Rock NC is located just south of Boone NC, in southern Watauga County in North West North Carolina.  Blowing Rock is about 90 miles northwest of Charlotte NC, and about 200 miles west of Raleigh North Carolina.

Is Blowing Rock NC Worth Visiting?

In our experience, most definitely.  Blowing Rock is a wonderful small mountain town, with a historic downtown, nice accommodations, and excellent dining options.

Exhibitions rotate often, so there’s always something new and admission is free. Engaging programming supplements the exhibits, bringing exciting depth to their presentation of the heritage of the southern Appalachians.

Spending time down-town among the shops and eateries is a perfect pastime. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet several artisans that create work right on Main Street, in studios inside their shops. From jewelry and hand-carved candles to rope baskets and paintings, watch the process of how it’s made. One-of-a-kind boutiques fill the spaces between. Blowing Rock shops are known for their friendly service and special finds.

Blowing Rock loves to celebrate the holidays as well, with downtown celebrations that include the 4th of July festival, a family Halloween festival, and Christmas in the Park & Lighting of the Town. The town makes its own holidays too: the town-wide Blowing Rock WinterFest celebrates winter in January each year. Many events go back multiple decades. Art in the Park, a summer series of juried art shows, is now over 60 years old. The Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show is the oldest show of its kind in the country and is celebrating a century of shows. Since 1923, the show has been presented annually and now runs for three weeks each summer.

Blowing Rock has been a tourist destination for more than 130 years, springing up as a summer resort location. This long-standing vacation culture has bred a comfortable, laid-back atmosphere. Southern Living Magazine has called Blowing Rock “the Perfect Mountain Town Escape.” Blowing Rock invites you to experience its unique combination of small-town charm and outdoor adventure!

How To Spend A Perfect Weekend In Beautiful Blowing Rock, NC

Most people visit Blowing Rock, North Carolina, for the fresh mountain air and abundance of outdoor activities. No matter the reason or the season, it’s always a great time to visit. A tourist destination for more than 120 years, Blowing Rock is the place to leave all your cares behind, relax and unwind, or get out in nature for some outdoor adventure.

A year-round, high country outdoor playground right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, Blowing Rock is less than 2 hours from Charlotte and just over 3 hours from the capital of Raleigh. Perfect for a weekend getaway.

Things To Do In Blowing Rock

What is the best time of year to visit Blowing Rock? Anytime. Springtime is my personal favorite when everything is in bloom and there is new life everywhere. The weather in summer is pleasant and warm, but it’s cooler than in lower elevations. Fall is great for witnessing the changing colors of the fall foliage but can get very crowded. (Plan accordingly and make reservations for lodging well in advance.) Snow lovers will be pleased to visit in the winter months, but be sure to check weather and road conditions before heading up.

See The Blowing Rock

A high country must-see and North Carolina’s first tourist attraction, The Blowing Rock is just 2 miles from downtown on US Hwy 321. Over a million years old, The Rock juts out 3,000 feet over the Johns River Gorge. The views from the rock itself and the observation deck are vast and breathtaking.

Plan to spend at least an hour or more there. Give yourself extra time for picture taking and browsing the gift shop. The grounds are mostly accessible, with the exception of a few trails. Hours are seasonal and weather permitting.

Hike The High Country

A favorite high country activity is seeing the great outdoors on foot. There are many gorgeous places to hike right in Blowing Rock.

Glen Burney Trail (PDF) is a gorgeous 3-mile hike with a trailhead just two blocks off Main Street. This hike descends down an ancient native trail, through a lush forest leading to not one but three magical waterfalls — Cascades, Glen Burney Falls, and Glen Marie Falls.

Pro Tip: This trail is listed as moderate but can be strenuous as it gets steep and rocky in places.

More leisurely, flat trails in Blowing Rock include Bass Lake Trail (0.9 miles) and The Maze (3 miles). Both are part of the Moses Cone Memorial Park Trail System . There is a convenient parking lot trailhead right off Blue Ridge Parkway, and both trails are wheelchair accessible.

Visit Moses Cone Memorial Park

This 3,600-acre estate, managed by the National Park Service, features the historic Moses Cone Manor, also known as Flat Top Manor, an antebellum mansion built and owned by aristocrat Moses Cone. The impressive white-columned manor sits high on a hill with gorgeous views of the surrounding estate, including Bass Lake. The Southern Highland Craft Guild manages the manor, museum, and gift shop. More information can be found here .

The estate grounds include 27 miles of trails available for walking, hiking, and horseback riding. It is also a popular site for cross-country skiing in the winter. Pack a lunch, spend a few hours walking the grounds, then enjoy a picnic next to Bass Lake.

Hook A Trophy Trout

If you have your own gear and a license, fishing in and near Blowing Rock is plentiful in public waters. For an unforgettable experience, fly-fishing lessons, or to find some prime, private fishing holes, there are several local guide outfits to accommodate you.

My favorite is Chetola Resort Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing — the only Orvis-endorsed lodge in Blowing Rock. Other nearby outfits are Mountains to Coast and River Girl Fishing Co . For more Blowing Rock fishing spots or outfitters, check here .

Slow Down Downtown

Explore the charm of downtown Blowing Rock. Browse shops and galleries, savor a delicious lunch, relax in the park — downtown has a lot to offer.

You’ll find unique shops, galleries, home goods, and sports shops plus a bit of everything in between.

If you’re looking for even more shops, you’ll love the Tanger Outlet Mall on Valley Boulevard, just a mile from historic downtown.

For a little relaxation after shopping or to work off lunch, there’s a little oasis not far from Main Street. Mayview Lake, New Years Creek, and Annie Cannon Gardens are off Laurel Lane, all within walking distance of downtown.

The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum in North Carolina.

Discover Blowing Rock History

Spend some quality time indoors at the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum (BRAHM). A beautifully built stone brick museum on Main Street showcases the area’s rich Appalachian heritage and culture through art and other exhibits. The museum features permanent exhibits as well as several rotating exhibits that change throughout the year, so there is always something new to see.

BRAHM events include galas, talks, concerts, and workshops for children and adults of all artistic levels, including Cork and Canvas, the ever-popular painting while drinking wine workshops (ages 21+).

The unique BRAHM gift shop offers local, hand-crafted art, pottery, woodworking, and jewelry, plus books, creative kits, and tools for artists and crafters. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday. Wheelchair accessible.

Ride Tweetsie Railroad

There is so much to see and do at Tweetsie Railroad . More than just an amusement park (since 1957), Tweetsie is a big part of Blowing Rock and North Carolina history. It is fun for all ages and a special place to make memories. There are rides, entertainment, activities, dining, shops, and even a zoo.

Did I mention the train ride? Narrow gauge Engine No. 12 Tweetsie is the last surviving steam locomotive of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. You can take a 3-mile ride through the Carolina mountains in an open-air train pulled by her or Engine No. 190, The Yukon Queen .

Experience Extreme Adventure

For the more adventurous 50+ traveler, Blowing Rock has a host of outdoor activities for every season.

Winter sporting activities including skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating can be found at Appalachian Ski Mountain . If you’d rather just sit and relax while watching others ski, the lodge offers a variety of amenities for skiers and non-skiers alike, is smoke-free, and has complimentary Wi-Fi.

Less than 5 miles away, Sky Valley Zip Tours has 10 zip lines, cliff jumping, and a 120-foot long swinging bridge. Four miles from downtown is High Gravity Adventures , an aerial adventure park next to Tweetsie Railroad.

Celebrate The Holidays

Blowing Rock is a town that loves celebrating the holidays — all the holidays. There is a weekend of July 4th activities, including an Independence Day parade. In October, dress up in your favorite costume and join the fun at the Halloween Festival and Monster March. Always a favorite, December is the month for Christmas in the Park, Lighting of the Town, and Festival of Lights at Chetola . The entire month of January hosts the Blowing Rock Winterfest .

Other popular events enjoyed by locals and visitors alike include the mid-summer Symphony By The Lake At Chetola . From May through September, on Sunday afternoons once a month is an Art in the Park festival, followed by the free Concert in the Park Series. The Blowing Rock Farmers Market occurs downtown every Thursday afternoon, also May through the end of September.

Best Restaurants In Blowing Rock

One of my favorite things to do on vacation is to eat, and Blowing Rock does not disappoint. This is in no way a complete list of all the amazing restaurants to be found in Blowing Rock, just a few of our favorites so far.

The Six Pence Pub

The Six Pence Pub is a place you’ll want to go back to time and again. It’s warm and inviting, an authentic British Pub serving both American and British fare. Our favorite dishes are bangers and mash and fish ‘n chips.

The Town Tavern

Another favorite, The Town Tavern , is friendly and upbeat. They call themselves a sports bar, but I feel it’s more than that. It’s that place where you can walk through the doors and instantly feel at home. They do serve some of the best “bar food” I’ve ever tasted.

The Speckled Trout

Serving fresh-caught NC trout and other regional dishes, as well as an impressive selection of wine, The Speckled Trout rounds out several fantastic downtown restaurants.

Pro Tip: The Town Tavern, Sixpence Pub, and The Speckled Trout are all on Main Street, and all have spacious outdoor patio seating.

Bistro Roca

Upscale but casual — a hidden gem, Bistro Roca ’s menu includes New American comfort food like shrimp and grits, burgers, and pizza cooked fresh in a wood-burning oven. Open for lunch and dinner by reservation only.

Timberlake’s Restaurant

Housed in the historical Manor House at Chetola Resort, Timberlake’s menu is inspired by renowned North Carolina artist Bob Timberlake. The restaurant features three comfortable dining rooms, an intimate wine room, and waterfront dining on the patio. Whether you are staying at Chetola or in town, Timerlake’s is a must.

Blowing Rock Brewing Company

No list is complete without at least one brewery. Crafting the highest quality mountain artisan beer is Blowing Rock Brewing Company , located on Sunset Drive just off Main Street. Their menu includes starters, burgers, salads, and sandwiches, oh, and craft beer.

Best Hotels In Blowing Rock

As with its restaurants, there are many options for lodging in Blowing Rock. Mountain lodges, quaint bed and breakfasts, and traditional hotels are some of the many choices. Here are a few of our favorites.

Chetola Resort and Spa

Chetola is the Cherokee word for “haven of rest,” and that’s exactly what Chetola Resort strives to provide. The 78-acre resort is one of the best stays in the Blue Ridge. Rooms include a hotel-type lodge, eight unique B and B rooms, and two- to four-bedroom condos. Enjoy an indoor heated pool, exercise room, and a full-service spa on site. Fully accessible.

Meadowbrook Inn

Meadowbrook Inn is a quaint, tranquil four-story retreat in the heart of downtown Blowing Rock, one block off Main Street. They have several rooms and suites to fit your needs, including a 1,000-square-foot room with its own swimming pool inside. Accessible spaces are available.

Holiday Inn Express

For folks who prefer traditional hotel lodging, there is a Holiday Inn Express on US Hwy 321, just a few blocks from downtown.

So whether you want to relax with a good book overlooking Chetola Lake, are looking to chase a few waterfalls, or want to hit the slopes, Blowing Rock is the destination for you.

Explore Dog-Friendly Blowing Rock NC

T ucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Blowing Rock, North Carolina is a bustling mountain town known for its outdoor recreation, robust dining and shopping opportunities, and beautiful scenery. Blowing Rock is also one of the most dog-friendly towns we’ve had the pleasure of visiting.

This beautiful town is affectionately called the “Crown of the Blue Ridge,” and is a must-stop destination if you’re traveling on the world-famous Blue Ridge Parkway. If you happen to have your favorite four-legged companion with you, even better!

Ready to take a little tour of this storybook village in the mountains? Here’s an overview of some of our favorite things to do with dogs in Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

Blowing Rock At-A-Glance

Here’s a bite-sized snapshot of everything you need to know to plan your trip to dog-friendly Blowing Rock NC:

  • When to Go:  May through October
  • Where to Stay:   Hillwinds Inn is extremely dog-friendly and located within walking distance of downtown Blowing Rock NC.
  • How to get here:  The cheapest flights will likely take you to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), about two hours from Blowing Rock. From there, we recommend renting a car and embarking on a Blue Ridge Parkway road trip .
  • How to Get Around:  If you stay at Hillwinds Inn, you’ll be within walking distance of downtown, Blowing Rock, but you’ll need a car to explore the other spots on this list.
  • Top 3 Highlights: Moses H. Cone Memorial Park , the Blowing Rock , Rough Ridge Trail .

Things to Do in Dog-Friendly Blowing Rock

Blowing Rock and the Blue Ridge Mountains provide numerous activities for outdoor recreation with or without dogs.

The following parks, hikes, and activities are dog-friendly and perfect for families.

Explore Moses H. Cone Memorial Park

Located right on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Blowing Rock at milepost 294, Moses H. Cone is an awesome destination for history buffs, hikers, picnickers, dog walkers, and sunset lovers.

The park encompasses 3,500 acres of what was once the grand estate of Moses and Bertha Lindau Cone, who made their fortune in the denim industry.

The house, known as Flat Top Manor, was built in the 1890s. The estate was donated to the Blue Ridge Parkway in 1950. While much of Flat Top Manor is being restored, visitors can take ranger-led tours of the second floor, and explore the local craft shop on the first floor. Dogs, however, must stick to exploring the grounds.

The beautiful estate grounds include 26 miles of carriage trails, two small lakes, and an observation tower at the top of Flat Top Mountain.

Dogs must be kept on a leash on the grounds of the estate, and you will likely encounter plenty of hikers, photographers, joggers, and horseback riders as you meander the trails.

If you are short on time, I recommend a stroll around Bass Lake or on the Figure Eight Trail, which starts near Flat Top Manor. If you have a bit more time, definitely hike the 2.8 miles (one way) to the observation tower.

Sunset from the carriage road just past the Blue Ridge Parkway underpass is fabulous. It’s also a good spot for an evening picnic. You can read more about visiting Moses H. Cone Memorial Park on the National Park Service website .

North Carolina’s First Tourist Attraction: The Blowing Rock

The Blowing Rock is touted as North Carolina’s First Tourist Attraction and has been attracting visitors since 1933.

While it’s definitely a commercial venture, charging $9 per person for a look at the rock and the breathtaking view, it is completely dog-friendly, and a beautiful spot for an afternoon picnic.

Meander on the flat, universally accessible walking paths, check out the vistas and explore the lovely gardens and a gift shop.

The attraction and the town’s namesake, the Blowing Rock, is a slab of Gneiss that juts out above the surrounding cliffs, 4,000 feet above sea level.

Supposedly, the walls of the gorge below form a wind tunnel. The winds blow through with such force that it returns light objects that are thrown into the void from the rock. I can’t vouch for that, as there was no wind the day I visited.

Hike the Rough Ridge Trail of the Blue Ridge Parkway

The Rough Ridge Trail is a beautiful little hike (1.5 miles round-trip) with awesome views of the surrounding mountains, as well as the Linn Cove Viaduct.

Starting at the Rough Ridge Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway, milepost 302.8, the Rough Ridge Trail is actually a small section of the 13-mile Tanawha Trail.

To make your hike a little longer, start at the Boulder Fields Overlook (milepost 302.4), and hike up to the Tanawha Trail and then on to Rough Ridge Summit, at 4,773 feet in elevation. Unless it’s cloudy, you’ll be treated to neverending views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The hike is moderately steep and travels through rhododendrons and hardwoods, across several wooden bridges and small waterfalls, before finally reaching a wooden boardwalk that was created to protect the delicate vegetation on the summit.

Explore Downtown in Dog-Friendly Blowing Rock

Blowing Rock is a thoroughly walkable town, with cute boutiques and restaurants, plus several lovely parks and an itty-bitty museum.

Most importantly, they’ve got two ice cream shops and a fabulous coffee shop, and just about every store has a bowl of water out for thirsty pooches.

Memorial Park, which is located right on Main Street, is not dog-friendly, but if you walk down Laurel Lane from Main Street, you will come to Broyhill Park, which allows dogs. There is a small pond, gardens, and benches for relaxing.

While many of the stores in downtown Blowing Rock allow dogs, your dog’s favorite place will definitely be Stella Blue’s Pawtique .

Flynn and I popped in to get him a little treat, and we were amazed by all the dried animal parts for sale. I bought him a duck neck, which he devoured in two seconds.

Stella Blue’s loves meeting the dogs that come to town, and they have a great selection of treats, toys, beds, and collars. It’s a must-visit if you’re passing through with your pooch!

Dog-Friendly Blowing Rock Restaurants

While most restaurants in Blowing Rock won’t allow your dog to come inside, many have fabulous outdoor decks, patios, or dining areas where you can bring your dog when the weather cooperates.

We dined at many local restaurants during our visit. Here’s an overview of all the restaurants in Blowing Rock that allow pets.

Blowing Rock Ale House

Located on Sunset Drive, Blowing Rock Ale House is the perfect place to unwind after a day of shopping or hiking. There are several outdoor picnic tables to choose from, as well as a huge variety of beers brewed behind the restaurant at the Blowing Rock Brewing Company.

The fare is pretty standard pub food with a bit of local flare. My server recommended the roasted poblano and white cheddar appetizer, which is a dip served with flatbread chips. It was really yummy, but perhaps too gooey and cheesy for such a hot day.

I ordered a flight of three beers and loved the High Country Ale, a golden ale with floral notes — the perfect summer beer in my opinion. Flynn enjoyed his bowl of ice water and lots of petting and compliments from the waitstaff and other diners.

Location: 152 Sunset Drive, Blowing Rock, NC 28605, (828) 414-9254

Mellow Mushroom

I had never heard of this national pizza chain before visiting Blowing, but the dining options at Mellow Mushroom in Blowing Rock are so yummy — holy shitake pizzas, tempeh hoagies, and enlightened spinach salads. Dogs are welcome on their outdoor patio, and there are 24 beers on tap!

Location: 946 Main Street, Blowing Rock, NC 28605, (828) 295-3399

Six Pence Pub

Another awesome downtown pub! Six Pence Pub has a spacious patio that welcomes dogs. Flynn was offered a huge bowl of ice water as soon as we were seated. We shared the patio with two other dogs without an issue.

I started with a Wicked Weed Cucumber Golden Ale, a Saison that came with a cucumber slice and was so refreshing!

For dinner, I ordered a grilled portabella sandwich on rye with a side of sweet potato fries. The fries came with bleu cheese, which made my day. Most of the menu consisted of classic British pub fare, cooked to perfection.

Location: 1121 Main Street, Blowing Rock, NC 28605, (828) 295-3155

The Speckled Trout Restaurant and Bottle Shop

Featuring a small menu of regional dishes, the Speckled Trout welcomes dogs to their outdoor patio. Eclectic menu items include a pickled watermelon salad, fried trout belly, and bison ribeye.

The onsite bottle shop features a great (and unusual) selection of beers and wines.

Location: 922 Main Street, Blowing Rock, NC 28605, (828) 295-3155

Town Tavern

The Town Tavern is a sports bar on Main Street with the largest outdoor dining area around. Featuring live music on the weekends, water bowls and treats for dogs, and a large tavern menu and beer selection, this is a hoppin’ spot for locals and tourists alike.

Location: 1182 Main Street, Blowing Rock, NC 28605, (828) 295-7500

Where to Stay in Blowing Rock with Dogs: Hillwinds Inn

Not only does Hillwinds Inn in Blowing Rock allow dogs, but they welcome dogs with open arms, belly rubs, and lots of sweet talk. This beautiful inn is within walking distance of downtown Blowing Rock and a perfect home base for all of your explorations on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The staff at Hillwinds Inn truly love dogs, and you definitely get the feeling that dogs are welcome, not just tolerated. There is a $35 pet fee per night, which covers the extra cleaning required for the dog-friendly rooms.

We were excited to book the Tarheel Suite, which included a separate bedroom with a queen bed, a sitting area with a gas fireplace, a balcony, and a small kitchenette.

The rooms are climate-controlled and so comfortable that it was sometimes hard to head out each morning to explore. My only complaint would be the lack of a workspace or table in the Tarheel Suite. Not a huge deal, but I did work/eat on the sofa, which wasn’t ideal.

I had the opportunity to peek inside the regular guest rooms during my visit, and they are just as lovely, with comfy beds, microwaves, mini-fridges, and warm and inviting decor.

Each room has cute rocking chairs out front to relax in, which is such a welcoming way to meet other travelers who are passing through the area.

A complimentary breakfast is served in the dining area off the main lobby each morning, and while it’s pretty standard fare, the Chobani yogurt and waffle bar was a treat.

The staff at the front desk said that Flynn was more than welcome to come for breakfast or the nightly wine and cheese hour, but I generally left him in our room to sleep during those times. My dog is well-behaved, but he’s such a beggar, and I didn’t want to make a bad impression…

I would not hesitate to recommend Hillwinds Inn to anyone visiting Blowing Rock. It is such a cute and welcoming place, and you can’t beat the downtown location.

  • Visit Blowing Rock . This is one of the best tourism websites I’ve used. I love that they provide specific itineraries based on your interests, plus they have lots of dog-specific advice.
  • Blue Ridge Parkway Association . The Blue Ridge Parkway is maintained by the National Park Service, but the BRPA is a member organization that works to attract visitors and promote businesses along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
  • National Park Service . The official site for the Blue Ridge Parkway, the NPS website will keep you up-to-date on alerts and road closures, and provide you with an overview of trails, campgrounds, and attractions along the 469-mile roadway.
