Frequently asked questions

  • Wherever you’re going, flying can be an enjoyable experience if you’re prepared. First of all, pack your passport, travel documents and medications. Next, toss in a little extra in-flight entertainment to while away the hours. A good book and a tablet filled with your favorite series are good choices. If you’re hoping to get some sleep, a blow-up neck pillow and noise-canceling headphones will also come in handy.
  • There’s a lengthy list of items you shouldn’t pack in your carry-on baggage too. Sharps, explosives and flammables are strictly prohibited in the cabin — they can include aerosol cans, flares, box cutters and razor blades. Some sporting equipment, like baseball bats and martial arts weapons, are also not allowed in your hand luggage. Visit your airline’s website for details about what you can and can’t bring on board.
  • The aisles of a plane aren’t the place for a fashion show. Layer up with comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and pack a pullover since it can get cool in the cabin on long-haul flights. Sneakers or enclosed, flat shoes are the best type of footwear for longer journeys.
  • Reduce your risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition which can be caused by sitting for extended periods, by regularly walking around the cabin. Alternatively, do some lower limb exercises in your seat. If you’re at higher risk of developing DVT, consider wearing compression socks.

A pril is one of the last months to travel for a great price. It comes at the cusp of Spring Break yet before summer season travel, which usually commences during Memorial Day Weekend. In some locations, April marks the tail end of shoulder season, where the flight prices and accommodations are below average, and the busy crowds haven’t made their way to the destination.

San Salvador, El Salvador For Less Than $200 Round Trip

The cheapest destination to travel to this April is San Salvador. According to Skyscanner data, El Salvador’s capital city is more than 40% cheaper than the average flight prices in some cities. Another benefit of traveling to San Salvador in April is it’s the last month of the dry season. The dry season is one of the best times of the year to visit and explore the natural wonders of El Salvador, such as El Boqueron National Park, which is located in the crater of the San Salvador volcano. Another great national park to visit is Devil’s Gate, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Known locally as Puerta del Diablo, or “Devil’s Door” in English, it’s a steep yet rewarding hike.

While there, head to La Dalia to be part of history. It’s a billiard bar and the oldest running bar in the country. People go for a drink and to play pool. Another top activity is the iconic colorful rainbow slide to channel your inner child. It’s an adrenaline-pumping ride that offers amazing views of the city if you can keep your eyes open.

Despite being the smallest Central American country, El Salvador is known for its large yields of coffee. Thanks to its rich soil and climbing altitudes, the country produces some of the best coffee in the world. Whether you’re a coffee drinker or not, visiting a locally-owned coffee shop or producer is a great way to support the local economy and learn more about how coffee plays a significant role in El Salvador’s culture.

According to Skyscanner, flights from Miami, Houston, Tampa, Dallas, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Austin cost less than $175 round trip . For the best of adventure and relaxation take a day trip for a Pacaya Volcano and Kawilal Hot Springs tour.

Cartagena, Colombia For Less Than $300 Round Trip

There is never a wrong time to visit Cartagena, Colombia. The weather is perfect year-round for people who are looking to spend time in a tropical climate. April is one of the busiest months for Cartagena, as it is the last month of summer, and the days are warm and long with a low chance of rain.

From the food, music, and cultural tours, Cartagena allows travelers to connect with Afro-Colombian culture . Alex Rocha, founder of The Real Cartagena Travel Agency , takes visitors on a tour through San Basilio de Palenque – the first free town for Africans in the Americas. The community is unique and precious to Colombia. In 2005, UNESCO declared Palenque a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

When the tour is complete, head to Plaza de Los Coches. It’s a lively and historic plaza in Cartagena that, unfortunately, was the primary slave market in the 1500s. Throughout your stroll in the plaza, you will see people along Dulces Alley selling sweet treats. These treats and traditions pay homage to the Afro-Colombian women who launched businesses selling these goodies, such as coconut macaroons or cocadas.

Other fun activities in Cartagena include a bike tour, shopping under Torre del Reloj, and reserving a spot on a catamaran like Bona Vida to snorkel and enjoy the water.

Flights from Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, Tampa, Cleveland, Charlotte, Chicago, and New Orleans are less than $300 round trip . Regarding food, Montreal has a reputation for being one of the most unique and innovative food cities in North America. With more than 120 cultures represented in Montreal, you can eat your way through different cuisines from around the world. For local dishes, try a smoked meat sandwich or poutine, and Montreal-style bagels are a great way to start the morning.

Burn those calories from eating by exploring the dozens of art museums you will find. There are more than 40 museums and more than 1,000 public artworks across the city. Barcelona, Spain For Less Than $550 Round Trip

April marks the official start of spring in Barcelona, and there’s no better place to be in Europe. The gardens in the parks are starting to blossom again, and you can actually smell the flowers because there are hardly any tourists. Crowds peak in the summer, so April is a great time of year to visit to avoid the crowds.

There are many festivals in Barcelona in April. The April Fair, or La Feria de Abril, is full of fairground rides and fair food. St. George’s Day, or La Diada de Sant Jordi, occurs in late April. It’s equivalent to Valentine’s Day in America. Stalls on the streets are filled with flowers and it’s typical for people to exchange flowers and books.

Flights are more than 23% off average prices from the U.S. Round trip flights from Boston, Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago, Miami, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Durham cost less than $550 . In a rare occurrence, San Francisco is the cheapest departure city, with round-trip flights at less than $250.

Finding your ideal flight, whether your focus is on price, a relaxed itinerary or flexibility

There are many considerations beyond the “base price” of an airline ticket that constitute the total cost of a journey. More importantly, there are many steps along the way where travelers simply throw up their hands and say, “That’s not worth it!”

Scanning fares and availability, I often come up with a great deal on round-trip airfare, only to discover an onerous layover, ridiculous routing or an inhuman departure time. Sometimes the outbound flight is fantastic, but the return trip is a deal-breaker.

In fact, I wonder if airlines proffer certain “deals” just to see what level of misery travelers will endure to save a few bucks.

The cost difference between a great itinerary and a ridiculous one can be extraordinary. And these disparities exist whether you’re spending cash or cashing in frequent flyer miles.

One particular fare that I’ve been watching for a couple of months is Anchorage-Guatemala for $385 round-trip. That’s a fabulous fare to get to the capital of a Latin American country.

The cheapest rate is a basic economy fare on United. The flights I checked departed on April 18 at 11:45 p.m. The first flight is on United’s Denver nonstop. Then there’s a 8:24 layover, before continuing to Houston, where there’s a more reasonable connection time of 1:11.

The return trip on April 25 is brutal. First, the United flight leaves Guatemala City at 1:30 a.m. On arrival in Houston, there’s a 7:30 layover. After the hop to Denver, there’s an additional layover of 4:36.

To add to the indignity, United will not allow you to take a standard rolling carry-on suitcase. Nope. There’s an extra $90 fee (round-trip) for the upgrade to “regular” economy. At that rate, you also get to pre-select your seat. Any checked baggage is another add-on.

A good itinerary on those dates costs almost twice as much on Alaska Airlines: $705 round-trip. The layovers on the outbound flight are less than two hours in Seattle and Los Angeles. On the return flight, there’s just one stop in LAX at 3:49, which is enough time to clear customs, take the bus to the domestic terminal, and clear TSA one more time.

[ What to know as Alaska Airlines unveils new initiatives and changes to rewards programs ]

Another nice fare that popped up is between Anchorage and Quito, Ecuador. Ecuador’s been near the top of my list for a while. I’m anxious to explore the country and meet the people — but Quito also is the jumping-off point to the Galapagos Islands.

United again came up with a decent fare: $524 round-trip. But it’s only available on one day, May 18, for a seven-day itinerary. The outbound flight has a tight connection in Denver (41 minutes) and a long one in Houston (seven hours). The return flight, in addition to a red-eye departure at 12:40 a.m., has a seven-hour layover in Houston and a four-hour layover in San Francisco.

Delta has a much better itinerary from Anchorage to Quito for the same dates: less than 18 hours in each direction. The cost? $3,000 per person.

You don’t have to look far and wide for these crazy pricing spreads.

Are you flying to Seattle from Anchorage? If you’re traveling on Friday, April 12, there are several flights (out of 14 nonstops) on Alaska Airlines available starting at $198 one-way. Those flights depart at 1:25 a.m., 1:55 a.m., 2:30 a.m. and 5 a.m.

If you’re interested in a daylight flight between 8 a.m. and 4:15 p.m., the one-way rates range from $337-$437 one-way.

If you’re a frequent flyer and would like to cash in some miles, the rates also are all over the map. Departing between 1:55 a.m. and 5 a.m., plan on cashing in 15,000 miles one-way. Between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., the rate doubles: 30,000-40,000 miles one-way.

Flexibility is important when you’re burning miles. If you can wait an extra week, the rate is just 10,000 miles each way for the red-eye Anchorage-Seattle flights on April 19. Coming back on a Sunday evening, travelers can choose a 10:15 p.m. flight, getting in at 12:48 a.m. The cost: 10,000 miles. But between 4:40 p.m. and 8:45 p.m., it’s much more: 20,000-30,000 miles one-way.

With 14 nonstop flights, Alaska Airlines can adjust each flight to appeal to either budget-conscious travelers or expense-account flyers. Some are fixated on the price, while business travelers are more concerned with the schedule and upgrades.

Delta, with four nonstops in April, offers about the same price on all the flights: $337-$367 round-trip.

Once you add a connecting flight, the routings and the fares start to get really crazy. It’s just one reason why frequent travelers prefer nonstop flights.

Between Anchorage and Atlanta, United has the cheapest fare, at $466 one-way (April 20-28). The outbound flight includes a 4:30 layover in Chicago. On the return flight, there’s a 12:38 layover at O’Hare. That’s ridiculous.

In fact, United offers a much better return flight, with just a 1:13 layover in Chicago. It’s $105 more.

Do you want to fly on the nonstop? Me, too. Delta resumes its nonstop Anchorage-Atlanta 757 service on May 23. Fly between May 26 and June 3 for the princely sum of $938 round-trip. That’s in coach. Fly in the front of the bus for $3,199 round-trip.

This spring, nonstops are priced a little higher than connecting flights. Between Anchorage and Phoenix, Delta and United offer a $154 one-way fare. Alaska Air is priced higher for a nonstop: $202 one-way.

From Anchorage to Los Angeles on April 19, Delta and United have $163 one-way tickets. Alaska Air’s cheapest flight to Los Angeles includes a 6:16 layover in Seattle, for $178 one-way. The nonstop? Alaska Air offers tickets for $288 one-way.

There are some exceptions, of course. Alaska Air’s new weekly nonstop from Anchorage to San Diego is priced lower ($217 one-way) than other airlines’ connecting service ($227 one-way).

Alaska Air’s nonstop from Anchorage to Portland also is priced at $198 one-way, while Delta’s connecting service sells for $207 one-way.

Be careful, though. A cheap southbound ticket may lure you into the sales funnel, only to be jolted back to reality for your ticket back home to Alaska.

For example, Alaska Air’s new nonstop from Anchorage to New York’s JFK airport is priced nicely for the first week: $275 one-way, starting June 13. But a northbound trip from JFK to Anchorage costs more: $549-$674 one-way.

The cheapest one-way ticket from Anchorage to the Lower 48 is offered by Sun Country Airlines on the carrier’s Anchorage-Minneapolis nonstop: just $117. It’s available on May 18, 27, 30 and 31. The northbound tickets are a little more, though: $185-$201, May 31-June 10.

The flight times and layovers are just two components of the total cost of your ticket. After selecting the right flight, then the next chapter starts: all the add-on fees for baggage, meals, Wi-Fi and extra legroom. But that’s another story.

Top 5 airlines serving from Los Angeles to Guatemala

only refreshments and biscuits available but it was a short flight from LAX to LAS thus it was fine.

High travel time and the flight was full but the staff handled it all well.

The person sitting next to me did not fit in one seat, so I effectively only had half a seat to myself. Airlines should come up with a strategy to sit oversized people in a way whereby they are comfortable but don't disrupt or take over other people's seats. It's unfair.

Horrible, missed my connecting flight because Alaska did not give me enough time

No hot water on a plane so no hot beverages , seats are cramped

This was a quick flight so more like a shuttle and everything went well. There was no food or beverage.

In spite of interacting with multiple employees at check-in, I was not told that my gate was only accessible by shuttle bus. I missed my flight as a result.

The checked baggage fee was too expensive. Will go back to flying Southwest. The crew were nice and the flight was fine.

They delayed the flight 30 minutes. There was an open gate right next to our gate that could have been used without delay. Boarding is a pain. You should be better and faster with no reason to wait in the sky Bridge at entry.

Packed flight. Excellent crew. Served snacks twice all very efficient and polite. Even the lady that checked in our bags was so friendly and pleasant

I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.

Great, on time departure, friendly and accommodating crew, great leg room, Smith flight

Honestly, I didn’t expect that I will experience this long time wait during the check in. There was only one person who was taking care of the passengers for the economy class and it took us to wait about one hour to do our check i. As a result we barely get to the airplane as the gate was at the end of the airport. That is totally not professional where one crue is working at the registration desk with economy and 3-4 crues are helping for the business class.

I guess they don’t serve drinks on planes anymore

Delta planes have the WORST seat comfort of any plane in history. It's the opposite of ergonomic, in every sense. They also recline minimally, are covered in a vinyl and have no feet rests. Then the disembarking process is chaotic and time consuming (because of the way they load the plane and deal with luggage). Overall, somewhat frustrating but we arrived safely :)

It was a very smooth ride. Not sure on a flight departing at midnight can be much better but it was late arriving and I had an early day so really just the logistics.

Really liked the choice of the 4 free snack options. Crew great. Good vibe on plane.

Very disappointed in the food selection. It was not good compared to other airlines.

Good breakfast granola bar good crew seamless flight and baggage transfer we’ll done!

Everything was great but the difference in paying for comfort + did not seem worth it.

Quick boarding and check in.. but premium seats don’t recline.. very hard to relax. But overall, it was a Great a satisfying experience.. Thank You

If they listen to you especially when there’s a problem with a passport now I lost my tickets and also my seat money

The worst airline I have ever experienced. Terrible customer service. Absolutely disgraceful

Checking bags at the airport, very confusing they make lines for different flights but they don’t have any signs, so if you are on the wrong line be aware they will send you to the end of the correct line. No priority for check in even if you pay and no priority to disabled persons and elderly persons.

Despite all the negative reviews, I took Volaris with a family of 4 (including a toddler and infant in arms). The only compliant was they charged me $70 to gate check our wagon (which we use as a stroller) and then it was not available for pickup at the gate (which is the entire point), so we had to get through customs and the airport with our luggage and no way to push our kids :(

Après avoir manqué l’avion aucune aide de la part des agents à l’aéroport pour trouver un autre vol

Más comida no cobrar tanto por los asientos y comida food

Worst airline ever!! Delays in all my flights!!! Do not flight with Volaris!

The departures screens in the airport showed the flight as canceled for some weird reason, but when I got to the gate just to double check, it showed it as on time, and not canceled. This was confusing, but ultimately I was able to get to where I needed to go.

For whatever reason, when I was in the San Jose airport, the flight from Volaris read as canceled on the Departures screens you'd find all over the terminal, it wasn't until I got to the gate that it showed it as on time and still on. It was confusing, but ultimately I did get to where I needed to go with the flight I was expecting.

I don't think anyone actually reads these comments, so I won't spend much time on this submission. If you want to talk, you know how to reach me. The D/FW manager of Avianca (self-identified), Juan Calderon, insisted I buy an onward ticket from San Salvador even though I have diplomatic status in El Salvador and live here. It cost me $1,393 and Mr Calderon would not let me make the ticked flexible so I could get a refund. He went out of his way to be rude to me. He gave me seat 32K -- windowless window seat in the last row and did not offer to let me upgrade even though there were plenty of seats. I have flown well over a million miles in my life and this is the worst experience I have ever had. I would like a refund on the ticket I was forced to buy. Just awful!

This is the Spirit of Latino travel. And don’t even get me started on customer service.

Boarding was very expedite. The chairs are fixed you can't rest comfortable during the flight.

Awful. I checked in online and there was no option to pay for baggage, at the airport when I checked in my baggage was received and Iwas not charged. When I got to LA during the boarding process I was told I didn't pay for baggage, the crew resolved I was let in the plane. When I got to my final destination my baggage was not there. It took me two days to receive my baggage. Bad service ever!

There was no food or drink service, couldn’t even get a glass of water for free. It was a long and expensive flight to not offer food or beverage on the plane.

It is better at the jfk than my home country. It was very easy and everything was on time.

There is no food. There is no in-inflight entertainment. The seats are cardboard. The airline is a living hellscape.

My experience was amazing! They helped my elderly mother board on early through a wheelchair and were accommodating to have us sit together since our seats were in different locations. When landing at the airport in GUA they were very helpful with full of hospitality.

Delay almost an hour which meant when we got to Guatemala there where 3 flights at the same time, you can imagine the caos in customs, avianca doesn’t care about passengers or schedules

No complimentary snacks food, beverage (not even water), pillow and blanket on a 6 hours long flight (including economy comfort). A low form of nickeling an diming. Lost a recurring passanger over a soda. Avianca never again.

Left 2 hours later for delayed I had to take care a kid with special need since people don’t want to move to accommodate the rest of the family. . It wasn’t bad but that made me upset that people can be that selfish.

For a 22 minute flight all you expect is for it to be safe and comfortable

Flight was on time. Staff were friendly. I paid for Economy Plus but was required to check my standard carry-on luggage due to lack of space on the aircraft. This cost me 30 minutes, unexpectedly, in waiting at the baggage claim. This experience did not meet my expectations.

No snacks served! Seating in the kast row in uncomfortable.

Wouldn’t let me check in said couldn’t find a ticket had to wait very long Time

I liked that we arrived earlier, you could improve your snacks give away

Flight was fine, it was delayed but only 30 minutes, staff were efficient, lady making announcements at LAX was really hard to understand but the rest were great.

I really enjoyed the staff and crew! Very positive and happy people! Made the experience easier! The entertainment was a bit lack luster. Better movie options as well as equipment that works smoother could be nice. My ear buds from the airline didn’t work and my tv screen had a terrible delay that made it hard to search for things to watch. Also the selections were very limited.

Flight was diverted to Canberra because Not enough fuel to circle on Sydney’s skies waiting for showers to pass. After that everything went wrong. It took forever to put fuel. Once back rolling, we stopped short of takeoff because crew had reached maximum work hours per shift. Back to gate we waited and waited in the plane with no water and no food - a total of 4 hours. Received contrasting news about the follow up of our trip. Finally we disembarked but our luggage could not be processed there as not enough custom agents. We ended up on buses and arrived at Sydney airports after a 3 hours trip. There we had to queue in line with 240 more passengers to file a lost luggage claim. We received the luggage after 48 hours, many of which spent holding with non-existent United customer service. Never able to speak to an actual person during those long phone calls. Finally on a chatline I could talk to a baggage agent, who filed another report as our luggage did not appear anywhere in their system. Thus it was surprising to get it back.

I got upgraded, so comfort was not an issue. But as always, it is the people from baggage handlers, flight attendants, pilots etc. that make the difference.

The benefits of circular migration in Guatemala: A round-trip to the American dream

Around 9,000 guatemalans traveled to the united states with temporary work contracts in one year, still a negligible number compared to the hundreds of thousands of those detained and deported for trying to cross the border irregularly.

Una agricultura de la Cooperativa Cuatro Pinos, en Guatemala, que desde 2016 fomenta un programa de migración laboral temporal con EE UU.

From his blackberry field, Arnoldo Chile looks at the Agua volcano with the peace of mind of someone who is exactly where he wants to be. He is 33 years old and has everything he has always dreamed of. He has his own land and a house that he shares with his wife in the village of El Rejón, near Sumpango, about one hour from Guatemala City. With an H-2A visa for agricultural workers in hand, Arnoldo has been back-and-forth to the United States since 2016. Every year, he spends eight months in California, where he works in the logistics of an agri-food company, and four months in Guatemala, where he takes care of the blackberry field he bought with his remittances.

In the village of Rancho Alegre, on the other side of Sumpango, Roselia Canel looks out the window of her room while embroidering a güipil. She thinks that she will soon have enough money to build a fashion workshop on the land she has just purchased. On the outskirts of the city, Juan Pacache and his wife are spreading fertilizer on their snow pea plantation, while, 15 kilometers away, in Santiago Sacatepéquez, Vilma Lemus is serving the last customers of the day at her fruit and vegetable stall.

Vilma Lemus

The three worked as farmers in floriculture in South Dakota for a few months in 2023. “I earned around $4,000 a month. After four months of work, I saved enough to buy land and help my family with daily expenses,” explains Canel. The seamstress is convinced that if she manages to return to the United States three more times, she will be able to open her own embroidery business.

Chile, Pacache, Canel, and Lemus are some of the many Central Americans who are forced to emigrate to the United States for economic reasons, but among the few who have had the opportunity to do so on a regular basis.

Roselia Canel embroidering at home.

“Having a visa is a lifesaver because you are not forced to travel with human traffickers nor get yourself into debt,” Chile explains. “In only one year I was able to buy my first blackberry patch and create work to help develop my community,” the farmer says.

Chile and the others have these documents thanks to a program to send temporary agricultural workers from the Cuatro Pinos Cooperative. According to the United States Department of Homeland Security, around 9,000 people from Guatemala traveled to the United States with a temporary work contract in 2022. Of these, 2,982 arrived with the H-2A agricultural visa, and 5,999 came with the H-2B to temporary non-agricultural workers. All had been selected by private recruiters or through the Labor Mobility Program run by the Guatemalan Ministry of Labor.

I earned around $4,000 dollars a month. After four months of work, I had saved enough to buy a piece of land and help my family with daily expenses. Roselia Canel, migrante guatemalteca

Despite the increase in temporary regular visas, the trend still contrasts with the 55,302 Guatemalans deported from the United States by air, the 19,665 from Mexico by land, and the 222,085 detained in the attempt to irregularly cross into the United States in 2023 alone . A coyote on average charges an irregular migrant $7,500 for the transfer from Guatemala to the United States. Human trafficking is the predominant means of traveling to North America for a Guatemalan forced to move due persecution, criminality, or lack of employment.

Processing a temporary work visa can take up to 120 days and getting one is not easy. It all starts when employers in the United States ask the U.S. Department of Labor for a labor certification that demonstrates the need to hire temporary foreign workers due to the lack of a local workforce. The employer then makes a request for non-migrant workers and, if no local workers apply for the position, the selection process abroad begins, often with the support of companies or recruiting bodies.

One of them is Cierto Global, whose director Johana Bustamante explains that they select qualified labor through agricultural workers’ organizations in Guatemala. “We conduct interviews and evaluate skills like strawberry picking or pea cutting. Once the company has selected the workers, we begin the visa process,” he clarifies.

La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City is the main point of departure for temporary migrants with work visas.

There is no limit on the number of H2-A visas that can be granted. The H2-B has a cap of 66,000 , expanded in 2024 by an additional 64,716 visas aimed mainly at people with previous experience with US companies. This makes it difficult for workers to be accepted by their first placement.

Furthermore, to date, the United States has mainly welcomed temporary Mexican workers, to whom the United States granted 91% of these visas in 2022. In turn, this reduces hiring opportunities for Guatemalans and other Central Americans.

“Temporary regular migration from Guatemala to the United States is new and at the moment there are only a few contracts with Guatemalan companies,” Bustamente continues. “On top of that, processing the visas takes a long time and not many people here trust this kind of migration due to the scams perpetrated by false recruiters who promise work contracts in exchange for money.”

Coyote scams

Vilma Lemus was a victim of the trafficking scammers.“In 2008, my sister and I heard about a man who sent farmers to the United States in exchange for 10,000 quetzales (almost $1,300) per visa,” she says looking away sadly. She sold the only land she had to raise the money, but the coyote disappeared. She lost everything. “For many years I thought about not leaving, then I met Cierto Global and once again I put my faith in the being able to travel to the United States as a regular migrant ,” she adds.

In March 2023, Lemus went to plant flowers for an American company for a season. She only had to pay 400 quetzales (about $50) for the passport. Her airfare, visa, and accommodation were provided by the employer, which is normal in agricultural worker recruitments. Upon returning home, Lemus managed to pay off accumulated debts and help support her three children, a niece, and her octogenarian mother. “There were times when we didn’t even eat. But thanks to the money I earned abroad, I was able to cover basic expenses and rented a store where I sell fruit, vegetables, and traditional costumes,” says Lemus.

Among the recruiters recognized by Guatemala’s Ministry of Labor is the Cuatro Pinos Agricultural Cooperative. Since 2016 it has implemented a regular migration program exclusively for members’ families. Vanessa García, the head of social responsibility at Cuatro Pinos, emphasizes that in the last year they sent 150 workers, who sent a combined total of $1.5 million in remittances , which was invested in production in Guatemala. “Temporary migration allows workers not to put their lives at risk along the way. They do not have to pay the debt to the coyote and they manage to maintain family ties because they return in a few months,” she says.

An irregular migrant usually lives abroad for an average of 13.6 years before returning home, with the risk of losing family and community ties. The uprooting that these migrants suffer contrasts with the experience of Juan Pacache, who has lived with circular migration for two decades, first to Canada and now to the United States, without losing the bond with his family.

“My house and my snow pea crop are the fruit of my remittances,” says Pacache. He boasts that after his first trip, he invested in his children’s education. “Now all my savings are used to buy land, fertilizers, seeds, and to hire people to work with me.” His aim is to reinvest the money to also benefit those who did not have the opportunity to travel.

Sending remittances to Guatemala increased by 11.5% in the first eight months of 2023 compared to the previous year, representing almost 19% of GDP. According to the Action Against Hunger report titled Temporary regular migration to Canada and the United States, both regular and irregular migrants send remittances, but regular migrants do so more frequently, with higher monthly amounts. They also return home with greater savings and work experience which they can put to good use.

In general, women are a minority in temporary agricultural employment programs. American employers prefer male labor and often lack separate, women-only housing. “I feel lucky that I was chosen last year,” Canel says. Considering that they have proven that they can work “at the same pace or faster” than men. “They should give us more opportunities to travel, especially because traveling with a coyote is very dangerous for us,” says Canel.

While Canel awaits approval for her visa to travel to the United States again, Lemus and Pacache returned to South Dakota in March of this year, where they will stay for a few months. They work hard all week. At night they call their families and talk about their day. Although they sometimes feel homesick, the idea of returning soon and improving life in their home country keeps them motivated. Pacache believes that the Guatemalan authorities should consider that people want to work abroad. “They have to facilitate the hiring process in Canada and the United States, allowing those who decide to migrate to do so on a regular basis. We want to live here, in this country that we are building with our remittances, and we ask that our rights as migrant workers be respected,” he concludes.
