TripAdvisor

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain's most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

jacobite

The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan (see below and subject to time permitting). Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer's day, you can see the "Small Isles" of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films "Highlander" and "Local Hero".

MALLAIG IS OUR DESTINATION

But as the travelling is as much a part of the experience as the arrival we hope you enjoy this spectacular railway journey, regarded as one of the greatest in the world.

FORT WILLIAM

Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands and situated at the southern end of the Great Glen, lies in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britains highest mountain. This area is a fine location to use as a base to discover the West Highlands.

We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the Harry Potter films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause on the viaduct, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Subject to time permitting, we will stop at Glenfinnan station. Once stopped in Glenfinnan there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. The Jacobite may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.

The village of Arisaig (the Safe Place) is centred on the sheltered shore of Loch nan Ceall (Loch of the Cells). From this very tranquil village it is possible to take the boat, The Sheerwater to the Small Isles (until mid September). The local Highland Games takes place here annually on the last Wednesday in July at Traigh Farm.

The end of the line, Mallaig was founded during the 1840s when the owner of the North Morar Estate, Lord Lovat, divided up the farm on the coast here into a series of parcels of land and encouraged his tenants living around Loch Morar and Loch Nevis to resettle in what became Mallaig and establish a fishing village. Today Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye, the Small Isles and to the Knoydart Peninsula to visit Inverie and the most remote pub on mainland Britain, The Old Forge. In addition, you can board MV Western Isles for a scenic Wildlife Cruise. Arriving in Mallaig we have over an hour and a half to enjoy a walk round and take in the atmosphere: there are shops, bars, restaurants and plenty of fish and chips to be enjoyed during the lunchtime stopover.

The Jacobite Steam Train

Jump aboard the Jacobite Steam Train and immerse yourself in breath-taking Highland scenery. While experiencing one of the world’s greatest train journeys. The railway line curves over the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, now immortalised in Harry Potter films as the route to Hogwarts.

You’ll travel through the heart of Scotland’s wild west coast and get up close to majestic mountains and sparkling lochs. At the head of Loch Shiel you’ll then capture the iconic vista of the Glenfinnan Monument. This is the historic location where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745. It was a passionate but ill-fated attempt to restore the exiled Stuarts to the Great Britain and Ireland throne. The monument, crowned with a lone piper, stands in silent tribute to the clansmen who died fighting the Jacobite cause.

This tour is only available as a private tour for 2022.

You may wish to add to your tour and take a return journey on the Jacobite Steam Train. This would mean taking a 2 day tour with an overnight stay before returning to the lowlands. Alternatively, you could choose to personalise the stops on route to the train instead. The choice is yours.

You can find out more by filling in the Private Tour form.

Wilderness and warriors…

Leaving Edinburgh behind on this magical, historic two-day tour, we’ll head north to the Forth Railway Bridge . Snap a photo of this UNESCO World Heritage Site , a memory to treasure and symbol of Scotland. Opened in 1890, the Forth Railway Bridge is a true Scottish icon recognised all over the world for being the first major steel structure, a key milestone in the development of modern railway engineering. To this day, this fantastic piece of history still holds the record for being the world’s longest cantilever bridge.

Over the river to Dunkeld…

As we head over the Firth of Forth, we’ll be making our way to the small highland village of Dunkeld, perfectly perched on the banks of the River Tay, the longest river in Scotland and seventh-longest in the United Kingdom. Enjoy your time in Dunkeld by taking a riverside walk to see the Dunkeld bridge, the largest Scottish bridge built by Thomas Telford, or visit the magical Dunkeld Cathedral. Part ruin, part parish church, this cathedral takes pride of place in this well-preserved historic town, also home to the resting place of the notorious ‘Wolf of Badenoch’, the third surviving son of King Robert II of Scotland. Make sure to explore the town to see the brightly coloured ‘little houses’, a sight which cannot be missed.

The journey north continues…

Leaving this historic Highland town behind, we’ll head further north to the ‘geographical centre of Scotland’ and of the gateways to the Highlands, Pitlochry , for a quick stop and bite to eat. Perched on the edge of the River Tummel, Pitlochry is home to one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, Edradour. Leaving this beautiful town, we’ll once again head north on our journey, taking us through the breathtaking Drumochter Pass . Skirting the stunning peaks of the Cairngorm National Park , you’ll pass the home of five of the UK’s highest mountains.

Through the mountains to Culloden…

Passing Aviemore, we’ll drive via the Clava Cairns , a 500-year-old temple and ancient cemetery. This ancient burial ground features in the well-known ‘Outlander’ books, in the iconic scene when Claire falls through time to the 1700s. From here we’ll continue on to Culloden , the last stand of the Jacobites against the government forces. Explore the battlefield and walk in the footsteps of the hundreds of clansmen who gave their lives for the Jacobite cause or immerse yourself in the interactive history found inside of the Culloden Visitor Centre . Leaving this harrowing battlefield behind, we’ll finally be heading to Fort Augustus , a peaceful little village on the banks of Loch Ness, our overnight stop for this tour.

Overnight: Fort Augustus

Take a steam train back in time…

Enjoy a hearty breakfast before a short journey to Fort William will finally jump aboard the Jacobite Steam Train ! Known for being one of the world’s greatest train journeys, this train ride will take you past Britain’s highest mountain, deepest loch, shortest river and most westerly station. You may know it as the Hogwarts Express ! You’ll cross the viaduct featured in the ‘Harry Potter’ films and pass the Glenfinnan Monument where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at the beginning of the 1745 Jacobite rising before arriving in Mallaig, the end of the famous West Highland Railway . The other half of the group will take this part of the journey to Mallaig in the bus with your driver-guide, giving you the opportunity to see the train cross the iconic Viaduct. Either way, you will be able to sit back, relax, enjoy the ride and don’t forget to take in those unmissable views of the highlands.

Have seafood for lunch at Mallaig…

Get ready to depart as the train and bus arrive into Mallaig , a stunning west coast fishing town, for lunch. Mallaig, ‘Mel Vik’ in old Norse, means sand dune bay, the perfect description for this vibrant port, the end to the ‘Road to the Isles’ . Spend some time learning about Mallaig’s fascinating historical past at the Mallaig Heritage Centre, or sample some of the freshest seafood Scotland has to offer. After a delicious lunch, the groups roles will reverse, with the other half of the group now having the opportunity to take the vintage steam engine for the journey back to Fort William, whilst  your driver-guide will transport the other half of the group along the Road to the Isles for an opportunity to watch as the train passes over the majestic viaduct. When the group re-unities in Fort William, you will begin your journey to the breath-taking scenery of Glen Coe.

The journey home via Glen Coe…

Heading south, you’ll enjoy a drive through Glen Coe , Scotland’s most famous and scenic glen, where the MacDonalds were betrayed. This awe-inspiring glen was carved out centuries ago by glaciers and volcanic explosions to create the stunning mountains we know and love. This beautiful glen may seem a little familiar due to its starring role in one of the ‘Harry Potter’ films. Our journey through Glen Coe takes us to Rannoch Moor , a beauty not to be missed, so stunning it was the perfect place to film a scene in James Bond’s ‘Skyfall’. At 50 square miles of peat bog and marsh, it’s one of Scotland’s last great wildernesses. From here, our last leg of the journey home begins with a drive through Stirlingshire, passing by the likes of Stirling Castle and the Kelpies, before arriving back into Edinburgh.

A great tour with lots of fun and laughter. Our guide, Iain was knowledgeable and gave us good information about each location and had the best jokes. The accommodation in Fort Augustus was clean and comfortable. We were blessed with the best weather all days during the tour which made everything look all the more stunning in the sun! The train ride was beautiful and if you’re a Potterhead, try and get a seat on the left hand side to get the best views of the viaduct.

We did this tour as a surprise for my partner as he always wanted to see Scotland and is a big fan of Harry Potter. Everything on this tour was perfect. Our guide was really funny and you can tell he knows a lot about Scotland, he told us plenty of stories, jokes and interesting facts about Scotland, he also played some beautiful Scottish songs as we were traveling along, great guy. The scenery was really beautiful, out of this world I would say, especially Glen Coe. We had plenty of stops for pictures or food. Our accommodation was comfortable, good breakfast and close to Loch Ness, lovely scenery again. On the second day we took the Jacobite train which was really fun and the best part of the whole tour. Would recommend this tour to everyone who wants to visit Scotland and may be a Harry Potter fan

Steven B made this tour unforgettable! This tour packed in so much into two days but did not feel rushed or slow. We just got back from it. So many unique experiences included. I went with my mother and grandmother, three generations of people to please and Steven B did a fantastic job. I learned so much about the history of Scotland, and he was so engaging throughout the entire tour. He added "wee adventures' throughout, which I loved. We were able to do the Loch Ness ferry to Urquhart castle, which was breath-taking. This was an additional cost but included entry into the castle ruins as well. The BnB we stayed at was Loch Ness Inn which was really nice, so close to the canal. Fort Augustus is a lovely little town. The main event was the Jacobite train which was such a cool experience coming from a Harry Potter Fan. Steven B throughout the trip worked so hard to ensure the best experience for us.

Jacobite Steam Train Review: What It’s Really Like (+ Photography Tips!)

Posted by Francesca Brooking | Scotland | 8

Jacobite Steam Train Review: What It’s Really Like (+ Photography Tips!)

Scotland’s Jacobite steam train is a railway journey of superlatives.

Hailed as the greatest railway journey in the world, it passes by Britain’s tallest mountain range and Europe’s deepest saltwater loch with views of the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct along the way.

It’s rare to find a more picturesque train ride!

Many people ride the Jacobite train as it’s also known as the Harry Potter Train or Hogwarts Express and there are plenty of filming locations from the franchise en route. But you don’t have to be a fan of the wizard to enjoy it.

In this Jacobite steam train review , I share everything you need to know about riding and photographing the train – and crucially, whether or not it’s worth the hype.

What is the Jacobite steam train?

The Jacobite steam train is owned and operated by West Coast Railways. Officially called the Jacobite, it’s named after the local connections to the Jacobite political movement in the Scottish Highlands.

It also goes by the Harry Potter train and you may already recognise parts of the railway route from the film franchise.

Some of the carriages on the Jacobite made up part of the Hogwarts Express. Although, the actual Hogwarts Express engine is at Warner Brothers Studios in London!

Whatever you wish to call it, the train is a traditional vintage steam train and one of the last ones in the UK.

It offers a unique way to experience the West Highlands with its spectacular views of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain, and the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct before reaching Loch Nevis, the deepest seawater loch in Europe.

Update for 2024: West Coast Railways (the Jacobite train operator) has been banned from operating the steam train over a safety dispute. For now, it looks like you can still book tickets for this year but check with West Coast Railways just in case.

The Jacobite steam engine and a man wearing orange at Fort William station.

What is the Glenfinnan Viaduct?

Located at the top of Loch Shiel, Glenfinnan Viaduct is a railway viaduct that opened in 1901.

The striking concrete architecture cuts a dramatic image against the surrounding green hills of the West Highlands. It’s made even more spectacular by the Jacobite steam train which travels along it for half the year.

The filming of the second and third Harry Potter books, Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban also took place in this area.

The Hogwarts Express even stopped at Glenfinnan.

Editor’s tip: The Jacobite steam train can get booked up months in advance – particularly during the summer! I recommend booking it early to avoid disappointment.

Glenfinnan Viaduct with people on the hill in the background for this Jacobite steam train review.

Where is the Jacobite steam train?

The Jacobite train is located in Fort William on the west coast of Scotland. Fort William is a popular base for the Scottish Highlands and islands such as Mull and Skye.

It’s also at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the United Kingdom!

How do you get to Fort William?

Known as the outdoor capital of Scotland, Fort William is a pretty easy base to get to.

You have several ways to get to Fort William: hire a car or campervan and drive (it’s 2 hours 35 minutes from Glasgow). I recommend RentalCars for the best price comparison.

The best option (I personally think) is riding the direct train from Glasgow to Fort William on the West Highland Railway Line.

Although it’s a fair bit slower (3 hours 50 on average), it’s an absolutely glorious journey up through the Highlands – giving you a taster of what’s to come.

And yes, it’s the first part of the same line the Jacobite is on.

If you’re riding the Jacobite, you’ll most likely need to stay in Fort William. Read my top hotel recommendations for Fort William.

Girl in a red coat standing by a carriage at the platform for Jacobite steam train review.

The best Jacobite steam train tours

You can easily ride the Jacobite steam train as part of a self-guided trip. But if you’re short on time, don’t want the hassle of getting to it yourself or want to do it as part of a wider Scotland west coast itinerary, I recommend doing a small group tour.

Here are the best Jacobite steam train tours you can do:

  • Hogwarts Express and Scottish Highlands Day Tour – departing from Edinburgh, this day trip includes a one-way ticket on the Jacobite steam train. You’ll also get to see the Glenfinnan Viaduct and the beautiful village of Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands!
  • 2-Day Highlands Tour with Hogwarts Express – if you want to incorporate the Jacobite steam train into a longer Scottish Highlands experience, this two-day tour from Edinburgh includes the Cairngorms, Culloden Moor, a ride on the steam train and a visit to Glencoe.
  • Glenfinnan Viaduct, Glencoe & Mallaig Tour – for a budget-friendly option, this eco-certified tour departing from Glasgow takes you to Glenfinnan where you can see the train going across the viaduct. This one doesn’t include the steam train ride.

Editor’s tip: I recommend booking these tours in advance as they sell out quickly! All tours offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.

Where does the Jacobite steam train go?

The Jacobite steam train runs from Fort William to the seaside town of Mallaig on the west coast of Scotland. It’s a gorgeous 84-mile journey with breathtaking views all the way – particularly when you cross Glenfinnan Viaduct.

One thing to note, although the Jacobite passes stations on the journey, you won’t be able to get off at any of them as it only stops at Mallaig – sometimes Arisaig.

To get off, you’ll need to ride the West Highland Line train (more on that later!).

Red Jacobite Steam Train surrounded by trees.

A quick note on Mallaig

Mallaig is a fishing town on the west coast of Scotland. It’s well-known for its fabulous fresh seafood. However, as lovely as it is, there’s not a whole lot else there so I advise managing your expectations.

If you feel like stretching your legs, there are a few nice walks in the hills behind the town. The Tea Garden restaurant is also a good place for a bite to eat.

Alternatively, Mallaig is a link to the Isle of Skye.

You could use the Jacobite steam train as a transport link rather than an attraction by riding it to Mallaig and then catching the CalMac ferry to Armadale, Skye. Or vice versa. This means you’ll ride the steam train one way like I did rather than out and back.

Just make sure you check the ferry timetable carefully so that the timings match up.

How long does the train take?

The journey takes about one hour and 30-40 minutes each way so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery passing your window.

If you choose to do the return journey then you have about two hours to spend in Mallaig.

Jacobite steam train times

Morning: Departs Fort William at 10:15 and arrives in Mallaig at 12:26 | Departs Mallaig at 14:10 and arrives in Fort William at 16:03

Afternoon:  Departs Fort William at 12:45 and arrives in Mallaig at 15:01 | Departs Mallaig at 16:45 and arrives in Fort William at 18:53

The service runs seven days a week. The timetable differs slightly on Saturdays.

Note: the train only runs for half the year – from April through to October. The afternoon service runs from May to September!

Jacobite steam train ticket prices and seating

There are three carriage types to choose from on the train. These are:

First Class Open Carriage: this carriage has been beautifully furnished with traditional upholstered seats and table lamps. You can choose between private tables of two or four. You’ll also get complimentary tea and coffee. Plus, optional cream tea is available for pre-order at about £18.50 per person!

First Class Compartment Carriage: known as the Harry Potter compartment carriage, the vintage-style compartments seat up to six passengers. The price is per compartment. Complimentary refreshments aren’t included. This carriage is only available during the morning service.

Standard Class Carriage : fairly basic but still comfortable, the seating is four per table. No complimentary refreshments are included but you can make use of the buffet.

Ticket fare prices look like this:

Note: all train fares include a return journey in the price. You can ride the train one way but there’s no one-way fare price.  Book tickets here.

Jacobite steam train review: what to expect

So, what’s it actually like on the Jacobite steam train? I rode it one way in September on the return journey from Mallaig to Fort William.

I used it as a mode of transport travelling from Skye to Fort William and then onwards to Spean Bridge for the night.

This was fine, but the only downside is that you only get a chance to see Glenfinnan Viaduct once rather than twice. So, I was a little apprehensive about getting on the train and finding a good spot.

Mallaig station is small (as is Fort William) so you can just walk onto the platform without showing your ticket. You get your tickets via email and the conductor checks them later on.

It’s recommended that you get there a minimum of 20 minutes before departure but we got there half an hour before to take photos of the outside (you can take better photos of the front of the train at Fort William).

We found our seats in Standard Class – right at the front of the train. It’s not quite like riding in style in the beautiful vintage First Class but we were on a bit of a budget. Standard Class was fine, nothing too swanky, but comfortable!

We soon realised that our seats were on the wrong side to see Glenfinnan so my boyfriend disappeared down to the back of the train with a camera in tow, leaving me with the bags.

View of Glenfinnan Monument with green hills in the background.

As we set off, I kept an eye on the map and then jumped up to claim my spot on the right side of the train at the end of the carriage in time for Glenfinnan.

I had to stand firm as plenty of people were trying to do the same. I did end up sharing my window with another woman though.

As we approached the viaduct, the train slowed down and the driver told us where to look. I felt a bit like royalty seeing the people at Glenfinnan waiting and waving as we slowly passed by!

We all craned our necks to get a good view and a lot of people stuck their cameras and phones out of the window (very risky!) to get a better shot.

I found that it was impossible to get a photo of the curve of the train without the odd camera, head or selfie stick in the way!

After Glenfinnan, I was able to return to my seat. My boyfriend also returned and we sat back and relaxed for the rest of the journey.

It was an amazing experience despite the mad dash for Glenfinnan. If I had a bigger budget, I would have opted for the cream tea in First Class for the full Jacobite train experience.

Which side of the train should you sit for Glenfinnan

Okay, probably the most important question – which side should you sit on if you want to take a photo of the train curving around Glenfinnan Viaduct?

Short answer: you want to sit on the left-hand side when departing from Fort William and the right-hand side when returning from Mallaig. I repeat that’s LEFT there and RIGHT back. The same goes if you want the best views too.

To see a proper curve, you’ll also want to be at the very front of the train or at the very back. If you’re at the front, watch out for the soot.

If you call up to book your tickets, you might be able to request where you sit, otherwise, tickets are randomly allocated.

Editor’s tip: if your seat is on the wrong side for Glenfinnan, don’t worry! It happened to me too. Go and park yourself by a window at the end of the carriage ideally at the front or back of the train. I recommend getting to a spot as early as possible and be prepared to wait there until Glenfinnan. As the train nears the famous site, lots of people will be milling about looking for a similar spot!

Other photo spots to look out for on the Jacobite:

  • The big and obvious one is the Glenfinnan Viaduct! It’s roughly about halfway through the train journey and don’t worry, you can’t miss it as the train slows down for pictures.
  • As you come to Glenfinnan, look out for the beautiful Loch Shiel and the Glenfinnan Monument , a tall tower that commemorates the lives lost at the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
  • Depending on visibility, you’ll be able to see Ben Nevis as you arrive at Fort William.
  • Just after Glenfinnan (or just before if you’re returning from Mallaig), you’ll pass by Loch Eilt where you can see Eilean Na Moine island – the island where *SPOILER ALERT* Dumbledore is buried in the Harry Potter films. It’s on the opposite side of Loch Shiel.
  • As you travel along the coast to Mallaig, see if you can spot the Isles of Eigg and Rùm then later the bottom of Skye in the distance!

Red train carriages going over Glenfinnan Viaduct.

What about Glenfinnan Viewpoint?

The Jacobite steam train is without a doubt a beautiful railway journey with spectacular views. However, there’s one thing you do miss when riding it and that’s the best view of the train going over the viaduct. After all, it would require you to be in two places at once!

So, what if you want to see the Hogwarts Express go over Glenfinnan Viaduct in all its Harry Potter glory? For that, you’ll need to go to Glenfinnan Viewpoint located on the hill above the viaduct.

Glenfinnan Viewpoint is just a 10-minute walk from Glenfinnan train station, but you’ll need to be on the West Highland Line train operated by ScotRail to get off, not the Jacobite train. That train runs three times a day (once on Sundays!).

You can also drive and park near the lookout, but parking isn’t free and spaces are limited.

Fair warning, the viewpoint gets very busy as everyone wants to get that same photo. Try to get there early if you can to secure a spot you like.

When to see the Jacobite train go over Glenfinnan

The Jacobite goes over Glenfinnan Viaduct at approximately:

Morning: 10:45

Afternoon: 15:00

In theory, you can squeeze in both riding and viewing the train if you’re prepared to do some to-ing and fro-ing.

Itinerary A

You could get the ScotRail train from Fort William to Glenfinnan, which takes about 34 minutes. Depending on the time you have, you could admire the views over Loch Shiel before getting into place for the Jacobite.

Then you would hop straight on the next ScotRail train to Mallaig and be just in time for the morning service heading back to Fort William.

Or give yourself a breather and catch the afternoon train back (only from May to September!).

Itinerary B

Alternatively, you could spread them both out over two days. On the first day, you could catch the ScotRail to Glenfinnan and have a day out there.

You have two opportunities to see the Jacobite train go over the viaduct then. You can also have a look at Glenfinnan Monument, the museum and take a cruise on Loch Shiel.

From there, go back to Fort William (or onwards to Mallaig), then ride the Jacobite train one way or both ways!

Want to know how to get to Glenfinnan from Fort William? I’ve written a guide featuring all the best transport options, photography tips, where to stay, what to do at Glenfinnan and more.

Editor’s tip: Check the timetable here to make sure the trains line up.

Top tips for riding the Jacobite steam train

  • If you aren’t too bothered about the Jacobite steam train trip itself but want to see the views, you can get the ScotRail train. It follows exactly the same route at a fraction of the price!
  • You can bring your own food and drink on the train. There’s also a buffet car to buy refreshments. If you book First Class you can pre-order cream tea for your journey.
  • If your window is open, be prepared for some soot and steam.
  • Scotland is no stranger to wet weather… If your window is misted up, give it a wipe and wipe the outside too before you set off so you can see the views.
  • And on that note, pack a rain jacket for your excursions outside! Read my complete Scotland packing list.
  • You can take photos and videos from the window but just make sure you hold on tight.
  • And if you’re travelling with your furry friend, you’ll be pleased to know that well-behaved medium-sized dogs are allowed in Standard Class!

Jacobite steam train review: is it worth it?

Yes, 100%, riding the Jacobite train is worth it! It’s arguably pretty expensive and I was worried it wasn’t going to live up to expectations, but it proved me wrong.

Admittedly, I was a little bit stressed about missing Glenfinnan to enjoy myself the whole way through – but not everyone can sit on the same side and I don’t see how they can manage it fairly. Once I settled myself into a spot I liked on the train I was able to relax!

The Jacobite steam train is perfect for Harry Potter lovers as you get to ride the Hogwarts Express (my 11-year-old self would be in bits!). But it’s not just for Harry Potter fans.

The train journey is regarded as one of the best in the world so it’s worthy of being a bucket list activity in its own right.

That being said, if it’s just a good photo of the Jacobite train passing over the viaduct you want, then I recommend getting the ScotRail train to Glenfinnan and waiting at the viewpoint.

I hope you’ve found this Jacobite steam train review and guide useful for planning your own trip. If you have any questions about it, let me know in the comments below!

This is great and all-encompassing. We wanted to take the train so badly but didn’t have the time on the itinerary to devote the day, so went and saw it at the station then raced to get a photo of it going over the viaduct. The little seaside town it stops at looks so delightfully British!

Thank you! Oh lovely, at least you got to see it go over the viaduct. Arguably the best angle!

I didn’t realize you could actually ride that train. As a Harry Potter fan that sounds like great fun! It’s also convenient if you’re planning to do destinations at the end of the track.

It certainly is!

I love train journeys and this one sounds epic! Definitely adding it to my wish list.

It’s definitely one of the best train journeys!

Hello thank you for your review and the opportunity to as a question. I have read several reviews and am left confused I really fancy the steam journey when we are in Scotland end of May 2023 as it is expensive. If it looks to be a good experience I will pay. But some reviews have said could not see views due to dirty window. I find that little difficult to believe. I think from images I have seen it is worth booking first class. My heart says the steam train would be the better experience really.

I think if you want to do it, you should definitely go for it! The windows can get a little bit grimy from the soot – a hazard of being a steam engine! However, from what I can remember, the First Class carriages were at the end of the train so the windows are a bit cleaner. The windows by the doors are usually open so you can go and stand there for a bit. Lots of people will do this as you reach Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Thanks for your comment and I hope you have a lovely time on your trip!

The Jacobite Steam Train

Described as one of the great railway journeys of the world The Jacobite Steam Train's* 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. *Due to an ongoing issue with the Jacobite Steam Train operator (West Coast Railways), bookings for this experience are currently suspended

West Coast Railways, operators of 'The Jacobite', provided the steam engine and carriages for the 'Hogwarts Express' as seen in the 'Harry Potter' films including 'The Philosopher's Stone' and others in this wonderful series of films. Some of the carriages of 'The Jacobite' are those used in the 'Harry Potter' films. So, come and travel to Mallaig along the line used in the films, see the famous Glenfinnan viaduct, an unmistakeable landmark for all Harry Potter fans. It's a great day out for all the family. The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan.

Please be aware that trespassing on the railway line is extremely dangerous and visitors should stay clear of the tracks at all times.

Jacobite Steam Train Tours + Schedule [2024], Highland, Scotland

The Jacobite Steam Train journey in the Scottish Highland was one of the best tours I embarked on during my visit to Inverness . Riding the Jacobite Steam Train was not just about seeing the landscapes that inspired J.K. Rowling, but about rekindling the sense of wonder that first captivated me as I shared the magical world of Harry Potter with my children, watching their eyes light up with each spellbinding moment on screen.

Seated comfortably, the lush scenery of the West Highland Line unfolded like a moving painting, the natural beauty that had inspired so many stories . The highlight, undoubtedly, was the moment we approached the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct – a sight so deeply ingrained in the collective imagination of Harry Potter fans. As the train curved along the viaduct, I half-expected to see the Hogwarts Express reflected in the waters below, carrying students to a new term of magical education.

The sense of nostalgia was overwhelming, not just for the fictional memories of Harry Potter but for the real history and culture embedded in the Highlands. Each hill and glen whispered tales of the past, with the steam train serving as a bridge connecting those tales to the present. This journey was more than an item ticked off my list.

Now that you’ve landed on this page, you’re likely eager to embark on a similar journey. The Jacobite Steam Train operates a seasonal service each year and this year’s schedule is published. Drawing from my own enchanting experiences, I’m here to guide you to the best Jacobite steam train tours available this year. Having navigated the options firsthand, I can offer valuable insights and tips to ensure your adventure is timeless also.

Let’s take a look.

The Very Best Options in Day Excursions and Multi-Day Trips: What to Expect

There are several escorted tour options from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness for the current year but my focus in this post are excursions from Edinburgh and Inverness. These can be either a day tour or multi-day tours .

If you want to see more of the Scottish Highlands, the multi-day excursions are great value for money. These include overnight stays at one of the prettiest villages in the Scottish Highlands and all transport, including the added expertise of a driver.

However, if you only have one day in the Highlands , I recommend the day excursions from either Inverness or Edinburgh as I’ve undertaken these tours and find these are reliable in their offerings.

Whichever of the tour options recommended here you select, these escorted tours include other destinations also which makes it really worthwhile. These may include stops at Caledonian Canal, Fort Augustus , Loch Ness, Falls of Foyers , Glen Coe, the pretty village of Portree and the famed Old Man of Storr on the Isle of Skye along with other places en route.

Set your sights upon the Jacobite Steam Train as it crosses the iconic arches on the  Glenfinnan Viaduct , before taking the stunning “Road to the Isles.”  Take the opportunity to enjoy fresh seafood in the fishing town of Mallaig , at your own expense.

Jacobite Steam Train Tours

You’ll definitely view Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom, near Fort William when embarking on the steam train journey. The celebrated Cuillin Mountains in Skye is an unmissable sight if you opt for the multi-day trip.

Whether day excursions or multi-day trips, all escorted tours mentioned here include your train tickets aboard the Jacobite Steam Train. Where this is an optional activity, I will mention this also.

Note that the Jacobite Steam Train runs a seasonal schedule, from end of March to end of October (morning service) and beginning of May to end of September (afternoon service). If you select the tours mentioned here out of these months, you’ll not have the opportunity to experience the remarkable journey.

I have the latest Jacobite Steam Train Schedule for 2024 right here for you so you can plan ahead.

As for the Jacobite Steam Train ride itself, choose from first-class service or standard seating when selecting your tours or request your preference with the tour operators. You could also hire a whole compartment if you’re travelling in a group.

The Jacobite Steam Train Tours from either Edinburgh or Inverness which I have carefully selected have received highly favourable reviews which means that they are reliable and in good standing. I share a link to each of the tours where you can check its reviews and explore further.

steam train at Fort William station

Jacobite Steam Train Tours from Edinburgh

I have three of the very best tours from Edinburgh to the Highlands which includes the price of the Jacobite Steam train ticket. It is a good idea to opt for a tour that includes this so you won’t have any last minute unexpected disappointments such as price increase or unavailability. The Jacobite Steam Train tours are very popular among tourists, so it will be worth booking your excursion as far ahead as you can, soon as you know your travel plans.

Day Trip to the Scottish Highland + Jacobite Steam Train Ride from Edinburgh

A day-trip from Edinburgh to the Highlands is a full-on itinerary and can take up to 13 hours for a return journey. Though, it entails a long day, this day trip is highly suitable for travellers with a short window on their Scotland itinerary.

It is well worth opting for this day trip from Edinburgh to the Highland if you don’t have much time or if you have dedicated just one day to explore the Highlands. With this day trip from Edinburgh to the Highland, you get to see and experience the key areas such as Pitlochry, Loch Ness, Glen Coe, Glenfinnan, and Mallaig along with the Jacobite Steam Train ride, giving you a wide perspective of the renowned Scottish Highlands in just one day.

Multi-Day Trips from Edinburgh to the Scottish Highland + Jacobite Steam Train Ride

If you have more than a day, then I’d suggest the two days to the Highland to be a perfect option to experience the best of the Highlands. This gives you the opportunity to explore at a more relaxed pace.

Multi-day trips of anything between two to four days is an excellent way to immerse in the natural beauty and culture of the Highlands. With added time and flexibility, you’ll undoubtedly experience more of the secret gems of the Highland of Scotland such as Fort Augustus and the Isle of Skye.

The Isle of Skye offers so much in natural beauty with Quiraing, Storr and the Kilt Rocks. I have visited all of these places and I can’t recommend enough on a visit to the misty Isle of Skye filled with legends and breathtaking vista.

Multi-day trips come with overnight stays in some of the prettiest villages in the Highland with options for a budget, and mid-range properties. You can also opt out and book your own accommodations if you prefer to do so.

Below is a summary of escorted excursions for you to consider. Remember to book really well in advance for these trips.

Jacobite Steam Train Tours from Inverness

From the heart of Inverness, often heralded as the “Capital of the Highlands,” you are bestowed with the unique opportunity to embark on either day-long tours or immersive multi-day journeys that include the enchanting ride aboard the Jacobite Steam Train.

The true charm of these excursions begins almost immediately as you find yourself enveloped in the Highlands’ breathtaking natural beauty, an experience that starts right at the doorstep of this pivotal gateway to Scotland’s most iconic road trips, like the famed North Coast 500.

I’ve narrowed it down to two choices; one being a day-trip and the other being a 3-day trip which includes exploring the Isle of Skye. Both excursions include a ride on the Jacobite Steam Train.

Day Trip to the Scottish Highland + Jacobite Steam Train Ride from Inverness

This day trip offers plenty of photo opportunities. You’ll make a photo-stop at Urquhart Castle (ruins) and Commando Memorial before heading to Fort William where you’ll embark on your timeless journey aboard the Jacobite Steam Train to Mallaig. You’ll have time to view and photograph the Glenfinnan Viaduct before making your return journey where a stop at Fort Augustus is on the itinerary. The final stop on the Jacobite Steam Train tours day trip from Inverness is at Dores Beach where you’ll watch a mesmerising sunset.

PRO TIP: On your journey to Mallaig from Fort William, sit on the left-hand side of the train in the direction of the train. In this way, you get a better view of the lochs as you pass them, and an incredible view of the ‘curve’ of the Glenfinnan Viaduct. If you want to see most of the ‘curve’ sit towards the back of the train and choose a seat that aligns by a window bay.

3-Day Trip to the Highlands + Jacobite Steam Train Ride from Inverness

A three day excursion to the Highlands from Inverness is a remarkable opportunity to immerse in the natural beauty, culture, and Scottish food along with a wee dram.

As with any of the tours mentioned here, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for photographing the immense natural beauty that surrounds you wherever you go on this journey. You’ll see the ruins of Urquhart Castle, and visit the Commando Memorial before heading to Fort William to join your Jacobite Steam Train ride to Mallaig. In Mallaig, you’ll have time for lunch and to explore this pretty village.

After lunch, take the ferry to Skye where you’ll stay at Portree for two nights.

Skye is a remarkable island to explore. You’ll be exploring the Sligachan Bridge, admire the spectacular Cuillin Mountains and learn about the incredible bravery of Collie and MacKenzie, two explorers who pioneered climbing the Cuillin.

Experiencing Skye’s breathtaking landscape is one for the bucket list, for sure. You’ll drive through the Trotternish Peninsula, explore the Quiraing and Storr, along with the legendary Old Man of Storr and the amazing Kilt Rock and Mealt Waterfall.

Below, you’ll find a summary of these two excursions and to book your experience. Remember to book well in advance as these are sell-out experiences.

Is there a Dress Code for the Jacobite Train?

While I enjoyed the camaraderie among passengers, aboard the Jacobite Steam Train tours which I undertook, where some even doned on a Hogwarts robe, there is no specific dress code requirement for the train. However, it’s wise to consider the weather on the day and dress appropriately with a good pair of walking shoes so you are comfortable.

Can you Bring Your Own Food on the Jacobite Steam Train?

Depending on the class of service you opt for, the first class usually comes with complimentary beverages and a light snack.

First Class passengers may receive complimentary tea or coffee and can pre-order an afternoon tea box.

For the standard class travellers, no beverages or snacks are included but the train offers a buffet car for purchasing snacks and drinks. If you prefer, you can purchase your own drinks and snacks and take this with you on the train. There are several shops next to the stations either at Fort William or Mallaig where you can stock up for your journey.

Where is the Best Place to Sit on the Jacobite Steam Train?

For the best views on the Jacobite Steam Train, I recommend that you get a seat by the window on the left side of the train when traveling from Fort William to Mallaig. This position offers the best photo opportunities, especially when crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct. The train briefly pauses on the viaduct, allowing passengers to take photos. However, on the return journey from Mallaig to Fort William, the train does not stop on the viaduct, so it’s important to be quick with your camera.

On the return journey from Mallaig to Fort William on the Jacobite Steam Train, it’s generally recommended to sit on the right side for scenic views.

What is the Journey Time from Fort William to Mallaig and the Return Journey from Mallaig to Fort William?

The journey from Fort William to Mallaig on the Jacobite Steam Train takes just over 2 hours. The return journey from Mallaig back to Fort William is slightly shorter, mainly because the train does not stop at Glenfinnan station on the way back as it does on the outbound trip.

How Far in Advance Should You Book a Ride on the Jacobite Steam Train

The Jacobite Steam Train is extremely popular and can get booked up months in advance, especially during the summer season. To avoid disappointment, it’s recommended to book your tickets early.

To ensure a spot on the Jacobite Steam Train, especially during the summer peak season, it’s wise to secure your tickets well in advance, as soon as you know your travel plans. Aim to book at least 6 months prior if your trip falls in the summer, or at the very least, three months ahead to avoid disappointment due to high demand.

Travel Class Options

There are different classes of service available, including Standard and First Class. First Class offers more amenities, such as complimentary refreshments and more luxurious seating. If you’re looking for the “proper Harry Potter experience,” there are special First Class compartments that need to be booked as a whole and are limited in number.

Mallaig Exploration

The train’s destination, Mallaig, is a small but bustling port town with dining options and a ferry service to nearby islands. You’ll have around two hours to explore, so consider booking a table for lunch in advance to make the most of your time . Read this Complete Guide to Mallaig and Best Things to Do.

Other Considerations

Remember to bring cash if you’d like to purchase anything from the trolley service onboard, as it’s cash-only. Also, the train makes a brief stop at Glenfinnan Station, where you can stretch your legs and visit a small museum.

Epic United Kingdom Train Adventures

T here’s something undeniably charming about train travel that brings out one’s sense of adventure. As the train gently rocks over the tracks, scenes of lush countryside, coastline, hills, and historic towns unfold outside your window. The United Kingdom is made for these moments of wanderlust and discovery. Its extensive rail network transports travelers to bucket-list-worthy destinations across England, Scotland, and Wales. Forget hastily ticked boxes; this is slow travel at its finest to let you soak up the magic.

Embarking on one of the iconic rail routes across Britain offers you a flexible and comfortable mode to explore its treasures. From the Jacobite Steam Train’s 84-mile sojourn past Scottish lochs to the North Wales Coastline’s postcard-perfect views of beaches and villages, there are epic journeys to uncover. Learn about the drama of the landscapes you’ll see and the history of the rails you’ll ride as you clickety-clack over viaducts and through the heart of national parks. Lean into those window views. Savor a cup of tea. Chat with your fellow passengers and locals. See where this UK train trip takes you.

The Charm Of UK Railways

The beauty of train travel in the UK owes much to the diversity of its landscapes and destinations. As your train meanders through the country, scenes shift from vivid green hills dotted with sheep to craggy coastal cliffs to quaint villages and towns. Even the shortest routes promise discoveries and photo opportunities around each bend.

Adding to the allure is the rich railway history that echoes at grand stations in London, Edinburgh, and beyond. Generations of travelers have hopped on iconic lines like the West Highland Line and Settle-Carlisle Railway. The Jacobite Steam Train, a historic locomotive, furthers the old-world ambiance with its vintage style. Yet contemporary comforts and flexibility aren’t forgotten either. Rail ticketing sites like Split My Fare or a similar reputable one make snagging affordable. Now, embrace getting lost in each of these destinations thanks to an extensive rail network that can efficiently whisk you around this compact yet endlessly enchanting island.

The Jacobite Steam Train (Fort William to Mallaig, Scotland)

All aboard for an authentic taste of retro rail travel on the Jacobite Steam Train. This historical locomotive transports you on an 84-mile journey along one of Scotland’s most dramatically beautiful lines – the West Highland Railway from Fort William to Mallaig. Romantic countryside, mysterious lochs, and the striking Scottish coast unfurl outside your window on this unforgettable trip into nostalgia.

As its pistons churn and whistle blows, the Jacobite Steam Train conjures images of early 20th-century travel. This antiquated train has starred as the Hogwarts Express in numerous Harry Potter films, adding to its mythical allure. The train, packed with railway enthusiasts and Potterheads, passes verdant valleys and across the 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct overlooking lovely Loch Shiel. Look out too for the remote “Hogwarts” railway station stop used for filming.

The endpoint at Mallaig is a lively harbor town where you can sample fresh seafood before catching the return steam train or ferry along the turbulent Road to the Isles. Between the locomotive’s billowing smoke and distinct scenery, the Jacobite’s mix of retro magic and Celtic wilderness cast a memorable spell.

The Caledonian Sleeper (Various routes in Scotland)

For comfortable overnight rail travel through the Scottish Highlands, step aboard the Caledonian Sleeper. These handsome trainsets whisk you to northern destinations like Inverness, Aberdeen, and Fort William while you sleep in your berth. Wake up to epic window vistas without losing rest or precious time sightseeing.

Caledonian Sleeper affords you private sleeping compartments with cozy single beds or double bunks, depending on room type. En suite showers and toiletries add a touch of luxury, while the classic decor channels Agatha Christie-style glamour. Drift off as the Sleeper rolls its way past lochs, mountains, and the UK’s longest-rippling loch, Loch Awe.

Routes typically depart around midnight from London’s Euston Station. Relax in the lounge car with a nightcap before retiring to your cabin. Wake up to a hot breakfast and mountain views as the train reaches destinations like foodie hub Inverness or the gateway to the Isle of Skye at Fort William/Mallaig. Disembark refreshed and ready to explore after your scenic overnight journey courtesy of Caledonian Sleeper trains.

The West Highland Line (Glasgow to Mallaig, Scotland)

The West Highland Line is considered one of the world’s most epic railway routes, transporting travelers on a 156-mile journey through the majestic Scottish Highlands. As the train winds its way from Glasgow up to the remote fishing town of Mallaig on Scotland’s dramatic west coast, it passes by tranquil lochs, towering mountains, gorgeous beaches, and abundant wildlife. Throughout its winding path, the West Highland Line allows passengers to experience ever-changing vistas of the region’s awe-inspiring natural beauty.

Leaving behind Glasgow’s urban bustle, the West Highland Line soon steers you into the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Look out for Ben Lomond’s peak rising majestically as you curve along sparkling Loch Lomond, Britain’s largest lake. The train then heads north via Crianlarich into Rannoch Moor’s wild, wind-swept expanse dotted with Highland cattle. Your journey concludes amid salty sea air as fishing boats bob in Mallaig harbor and ferries stand ready to continue westward to Skye.

The North Wales Coast Line (Crewe to Holyhead, Wales)

Hugging the Irish Sea, the North Wales Coast Line offers a scenic train voyage along one of Britain’s most stunning shorelines. The 130-mile route connects English towns and cities to the port town of Holyhead, where ferries continue the journey onward to Ireland.

Leaving behind the English countryside around Crewe, the railway soon enters Wales, offering sweeping views of mudflats and coastal marshes. As the train threads through seaside resort towns like Llandudno Junction, the Great Orme peninsula juts out majestically into the ocean ahead. Further along, foaming surf crashes against the base of towering limestone cliffs, creating postcard-perfect vistas.

One highlight is bouncing along the coast above picture-perfect sandy beaches backing snow-capped Snowdonia peaks. Historic castle towns like Conwy, Harlech, and Caernarfon slide by, allowing glimpses of imposing medieval fortifications. The line threads across the Menai Strait on the epic Britannia Bridge before reaching the journey’s end at Holyhead with its blend of small-town charm and Irish Sea ferry activity.

Passing over the rugged backbone of northern England, the 72-mile Settle-Carlisle railway is considered one of the UK’s most stunning historic rail routes. Opening in 1876 to connect Yorkshire with Scotland, this railway transports travelers through the dramatic Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines landscapes today.

Your journey begins in the quaint market town of Settle, nestled in the Ribble Valley. Soon, the train starts its challenging climb into the Pennine hills, snaking through green valleys and across ancient stone viaducts. Marvel at the 24 lofty arches of Ribblehead Viaduct towering above rough highland terrain grazed by sheep.

Further highlights are stopping at remote “request stop” stations like Dent, England’s highest mainline station perched at 1,150 feet. As the train winds its way northwest through Northumberland National Park, the historic city of Carlisle emerges with its imposing 12th-century castle that once guarded the English-Scottish border.

With its postcard-perfect countryside and heritage appeal, the Settle-Carlisle railway promises a quintessential train trip into the heart of rural England.

Practical Tips For Epic Train Adventures

Going aboard an iconic UK train journey is an incredible way to experience the history, landscape, and culture of Britain. But a bit of planning goes a long way to ensure your rail adventures run smoothly. Follow these practical tips when booking your epic ride on the rails:

  • The extensive rail network connecting England, Scotland, and Wales can get confusing, especially for first-timers. Doing some research ahead of time helps guarantee you catch suitable trains between destinations.
  • Get oriented with train route maps and plan your itinerary. Knowing essentials like departure stations, connections, and arrival times avoids headaches.
  • Check train company websites for current schedules and book tickets early, even if non-refundable. Snagging cheap fares often requires booking 12 weeks or more prior to travel.
  • Consider purchasing Brit Rail passes, which allow flexible travel on consecutive or non-consecutive days, making hopping on and off trains a breeze.
  • Download the National Rail app and sign up for updates from train operators to stay current with schedules or delay notices.

With stunning landscapes whooshing by your window, you’ll want to capture incredible photos without reflections and glare spoiling the shot.

  • Choose a window seat facing the direction of travel for the best angle on that perfect click as the train rounds a bend.
  • Carry polarized sunglasses to cut window glare and a microfiber cloth to wipe away smudges.
  • Experiment with camera settings like priority mode and manual focus to adjust for motion.

If you prepare using these essential rail tips ahead of time, you’ll be able to sit back, relax, and have confidence that your UK train trip adventure will unfold smoothly with beautiful, picture-perfect views along the way.

Final Thoughts

As the train whistle fades into the distance, you disembark refreshed, enlightened, and awakened after an epic rail journey across Britain. From the rugged romance of Scottish lochs to storybook English villages and Welsh coastal vistas, the landscapes and legends of the UK have unfolded outside your window. The rhythm of the rails still echoes as you reminisce with fellow passengers about picture-perfect moments now etched into memory.

Next time, you might venture on an overnight passage through the Highlands or link between harbor towns and historic castles. Wherever the rails guide you, epic adventures across England, Scotland, and Wales chug just over the horizon.

Harry Potter steam train service suspended

The operator of the Jacobite train in the Highlands has warned the suspension could cost up to £50m in lost value.

Thursday 21 March 2024 21:10, UK

A steam train made famous by Harry Potter has been suspended pending a safety ruling.

The Jacobite train service through the Highlands has been suspended with immediate effect as it awaits a verdict on allowing it to continue operating in its current state.

Its operator has warned the suspension could cost up to £50m in lost value.

The Jacobite train featured in the 2002 film Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets and is sometimes known as the Hogwarts Express in a nod to JK Rowling 's franchise.

It is operated by West Coast Railways (WCR), the UK's largest main-line heritage rail operator, and has had to suspend the service as it awaits a ruling from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) on whether it can continue to operate with hinged-door carriages.

Speaking to Sky News, a family of Harry Potter fans said it was "very sad" that the train wasn't running, and one woman who travelled from Barcelona added it was "a shame" not to be able to witness the cinematic icon.

Hinged-door carriage exemption

The service has operated for more than 30 years under an exemption that allows it to run with hinged-door carriages on the main lines, which is typically not allowed.

WCR has submitted an application to renew the exemption, and made a request for a temporary exemption to operate while the ORR makes its decision.

WCR lost a High Court challenge against the ORR over the safety of doors on its carriages in December.

The company had complained that the multimillion-pound cost of having to retrofit central locking could "destroy" its business and argued its door systems were just as safe.

However, a judge dismissed the operator's case and concluded the ORR had taken a "justifiable" approach.

The service takes tourists from Fort William to Mallaig, including over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Suspension could cost £50m in lost value

Speaking about the suspension, James Shuttleworth, commercial manager at WCR, said: "The Jacobite service is enjoyed by thousands of customers every year. It boosts the local economies of Mallaig and Fort William and brings an estimated £20m into the UK's tourism sector.

"If the ORR does not grant us a further exemption, we believe this could lead to up to £50m in lost value to both local and national communities."

The company said passengers with bookings for the Jacobite will be offered a full refund.

An ORR spokesperson said heritage operators, including WCR were told "several years ago" that in order to operate after 31 March, they must either have central door locking - as opposed to hinged-door carriages - or would need an exemption.

"WCR's application for an exemption failed and they made a claim for judicial review," they added.

"A temporary exemption was granted in order to maintain the status quo, enabling WCR to operate whilst the litigation reached a conclusion.

"Despite this, WCR chose to sell tickets when it was far from certain that a new application for an exemption would be granted, either in time for the commencement of services or at all.

"It submitted an exemption application on 8 March, which we are now assessing.

"ORR is disappointed that WCR appears not to have made sensible contingency plans for the benefit of their customers."

THE popular Jacobite steam train that featured in the Harry Potter films has been suspended again.

The tourist attraction in Scotland has been taken off the tracks in a row over safety regulation.

The Jacobite train has been suspended over safety fears

West Coast Railways (WCR) has been stuck in an argument over the safety of the locking systems on the train's carriage doors for some months.

The service was first suspended last summer following a  safety report , published by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR).

ORR is insisting that the Jacobite service has new central locking systems fitted on its carriages.

Initially, a temporary exemption to the safety rule was granted, allowing the service to continue as normal.

However, WCR now finds itself seeking further exemption to the rules from ORR.

While awaiting a decision on a new application the service has been suspended until further notice.

The Jacobite is perhaps most famous for its crossing of the Glenfinnan Viaduct, near Fort William, which even featured in the film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002.

However, the full service runs between Mallaig and Fort William from March to October.

Passengers booked on the train have been offered a full refund while services are suspended.

The service's commercial manager James Shuttleworth warned that that the suspension of services could cost as much as £50million in lost value.

He said: “The Jacobite service is enjoyed by thousands of customers every year.

"It boosts the local economies of Mallaig and Fort William and brings an estimated £20million into the UK's tourism sector.

Three scenic train journeys you can take in the UK

the jacobite train tour

Cornish Coast - One trip that rail enthusiasts seem to love is along a stretch of the  Cornish  coast and takes just 10 minutes to complete.

The route from St Erth to  St Ives  only stops at Carbis Bay en route to its final destination, but the views out the window for the whole journey are pretty spectacular.

Another highlight of the journey is that St Ives station is situated right next to  Porthminster beach , meaning the sand and sea can be accessed almost immediately.

Meanwhile, the station is less than a ten minute walk into town, where the harbour, shops, galleries and  pubs  can be explored.

Durham to Edinburgh - Another train route that people in the UK love is the East Coast train line between Durham and Edinburgh, with coastal views and city landscapes among the sights that can be seen out the window.

Newcastle , Berwick, Lindisfarne and Durham Cathedral are all among the highlights on that route.

Scotland's West Highland Line - While  Scotland  is home to plenty of famous landmarks and top attractions, it also has one of the most breathtaking train routes in the world.

Scotland's West Highland Line has previously been dubbed the best rail journey in the world by  Wanderlust  - and it's easy to see why.

The journey from Glasgow to Fort William is one of my favourite train routes - and I've  interrailed through mainland Europe .

With mountain landscapes, serene lochs, wistful moors, and wildlife all visible through the  train window , it's certainly a route all holidaymakers should consider doing at least once.

"If the ORR does not grant us a further exemption, we believe this could lead to up to £50 million in lost value to both local and national communities."

Shuttleworth also called on the ORR to find a "long-term solution which safeguards the future of heritage services on the main line".

However, an ORR spokesperson said WCR were informed "several years ago" that they would not be able to operate after March 31 if they had neither the central door locking system or an exemption.

They said: "WCR chose to sell tickets when it was far from certain that a new application for an exemption would be granted, either in time for the commencement of services or at all.

"It submitted an exemption application on 8 March, which we are now assessing.

"ORR is disappointed that WCR appears not to have made sensible contingency plans for the benefit of their customers."

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
