Detailed Itinerary: Kenya Safari And Zanzibar

Day 1: fly to nairobi.

Here is where your lifelong journey begins! As you travel from your destination to Nairobi, Kenya, your first stop, buckle up and get ready for a memorable trip. Your driver will meet you at the airport and take you by private car across the city to your overnight lodging.

Day 1 – 2: 1 night stay at Tamarind Tree Hotel

The Tamarind Tree Hotel, which is only 5 kilometers from the city center, provides spacious and contemporary lodging in addition to a gorgeous private pool and a restaurant on the premises, so you can unwind on your first night in Kenya.

Day 2: Fly from Nairobi to Laikipia

It’s time to continue your adventure after a restorative night at the Tamarind Tree Hotel . After you have checked out, a driver will take you to Wilson airport, which is conveniently situated only 5 minutes from the hotel. From there, you will board a local aircraft to Laikipia. Put the camera away but not yet! Keep a look out for the expansive golden plains and wildlife below as you go between airstrips because you may expect to see some breathtaking bird’s-eye views!

Day 2 – 5: 3 nights stay at Elewana Elsa’s Kopje Meru

Elewana Elsa’s Kopje Meru is a luxurious, rustic-style lodge located inside the Meru National Park that has been expertly molded into Mughwango Hill. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted and shown to your gorgeous private cottage, where you can relax in the soothing bath while taking in the breathtaking panoramic views of the park and wandering wildlife.

Day 3 – 4: The Meru National Park

The Meru National Park, which covers an area of more than 870km2, is one of Kenya’s most untouched and least frequented national parks. The park provides tourists with a unique opportunity to experience an almost fully unexplored African reserve. It is home to 13 rivers, expansive grasslands, dense woodlands, and a wide diversity of species, including the Big Five.

You will be accompanied by knowledgeable tour guides at Elewana Elsa’s Kopje on several excursions throughout the park, including a special game drive where you’ll have lots of chances to see wildlife like zebras, cheetahs, hartebeests, over 400 species of birds, and much more!

Day 5: Fly from Laikipia to The Masai Mara

Your journey will continue west to the Masai Mara , a renowned natural reserve close to the Tanzanian border, after an amazing stay at Elewana Elsa’s Kopje. After gathering all of your luggage, you’ll leave the lodge and take a quick flight to Masai Mara, where you’ll be met and taken to your next place of lodging.

Day 5 – 8: 3 nights stay at Elewana Elephant Pepper Camp

Elewana Elephant Pepper Camp, a sister camp of Elewana Elsa’s Kopje , is located in the Mara North Conservancy. Only 8 deluxe safari tents are available at the camp, and they are all on the ground floor. This allows visitors easy access to the landscape and, with any luck, a visit from the interested local wildlife! The tents are roomy and equipped with private decks, en-suite showers, and windows so you can enjoy the savannah or the beautiful night sky from the comfort of your tent.

Day 6 – 7: The Masai Mara

Elephant Pepper guests have the luxury of virtually having the Mara North Conservancy to themselves because only resident lodges are allowed to do game drives there. You will gain valuable insight into the behaviors of the wildlife you see from knowledgeable guides, some of whom have worked in the conservancy for more than 20 years. They will also work with you to locate the wildlife you’re most eager to see. You can take an exciting game walk to get a closer look, where you’ll get to track creatures on foot and keep an eye out for tiny plants and animals.

Day 8: Fly from The Masai Mara to Zanzibar

It’s time to continue on to your next location after an amazing tour across Kenya! You’ll leave the Mara North Conservancy, go to Wilson Airport for a connecting flight, and then continue on to the warm-weather destination of Zanzibar.

Day 8-12: 4 nights stay at Xanadu Villas

On a remote stretch of undeveloped white sand beach on Zanzibar’s east coast, Xanadu Villas is an incredibly beautiful resort with just 7 premium villas. The resort, which is tucked away in a sea of beautiful tropical vegetation, radiates a sense of tranquility and rustic luxury that is hard to find anywhere. The ideal place to finish a honeymoon, the resort offers a wide range of organized activities to keep up the spirit of adventure or you may retreat to the spa to unwind with a variety of treatments and massages.

Day 9-11: Zanzibar

After your captivating exploration of Kenya’s national parks ‘ plains, it’s time to visit Zanzibar to see another side of Africa. One of the nicest beaches in the area, Zanzibar’s East Coast is a truly tropical paradise with powder-soft white sand, swaying palm palms, and the sparkling Indian Ocean as its backdrop. In order to truly enjoy the beauty of the area, you can participate in a variety of marine exploration activities while staying at Xanadu Villas & Retreat, including kayaking, paddle boarding, and guided snorkeling.

Day 12 – 13: Fly from Zanzibar

Your tour has come to an end after 11 nights of wonderful activities in Kenya and Zanzibar. Once you’ve checked out, your driver will be there to pick you up and take you back to the airport so you can board a flight to Nairobi and return to your destination. We sincerely hope you loved this African flavor!

Kenya & Zanzibar: An Intrepid Safari in The Heart of East Africa

safari kenya depuis zanzibar

The original safari destination, Kenya was the first location in the world to host safaris and, still to this day, it remains one of our top picks for first-time safari-goer, and seasoned travelers alike – if anything it keeps getting better and better. Packed full of wondrous wildlife, unparalleled views and fascinating cultural experiences, Kenya has always held a special place in our hearts. So much so one of our Africa Travel Experts spent some time working at a lodge in the Mara, and knows all the best places to visit. He’s helped create this expertly-crafted 13-day adventure that will take you on a journey through this magnificent country’s wide open plains, unearthing its best-kept secrets as you go. Escape cosmopolitan life and experience true serenity whilst soaring above the savannah in your own private hot air balloon, before walking on the wild side as you track elusive black rhinos. Combining the rocky landscapes of the Samburuland, the luscious greenery of the Masaai Mara and the tranquil coast of Zanzibar, this trip is the perfect combination of the wonders of East Africa.

Make this itinerary yours

Each and every Black Tomato trip is tailored exactly to who you are and what you want to do So tell us about yourself and we’ll create something that’s entirely you.

Scintillating Samburu

After landing in Nairobi, you will connect straight onto a domestic flight to Kalama in the Samburu lands. Here, you will be met by your private guide and driven to your luxurious abode at Saruni Samburu, where you will spend the next two nights. Located in the heart of the Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy, Saruni Samburu epitomises five-star luxury in one of the most remote regions in the world. Whilst here, you will have the opportunity to go on game drives through the conservancy, viewing the amazing wildlife that Samburuland has to offer – not to mention ‘The Big Five’, visit the conservancy’s photography hideaway and enjoy an evening of romance as you look out over the beautiful Kenyan sunset with a glass of only the finest champagne. We know it sounds like an action-packed day but don’t worry, Saruni Samburu has you covered. Voted one of the most inspiring beauty centers in Kenya, the Spa is the dream homecoming present for those looking for a spot of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Rhino Heaven

After a delicious final breakfast at Saruni Samburu, your private guide will whisk you two hours north to Kenya’s undiscovered northern territory, filled with marvellous flora and fauna. Staying at Saruni Rhino, you’ll experience a world first with a unique, once in a lifetime experience of walking rhino tracking, accompanied by an expert Saruni guide. With only two lavish bandas, this luxury lodge personifies exclusivity, whilst also providing you with an adrenaline-charged array of activities. As well as black rhinos, the Sera Conservancy has a spectacular array of other species including elephants and a plethora of birdlife, providing the ultimate experience for bird enthusiasts and a photographer’s playground. We have no doubt that this supreme experience will leave you awestruck and that it will fulfil all your wildest dreams of a luxury safari.

The Magnificence of the Masaai Mara

From the Sera, you will then fly two and a half hours to the infamous Masaai Mara region of Africa. Here, you will be picked up by your guide and taken to your next hotel, the outstanding Angama Mara. Described as somewhere between heaven and earth the Angama Mara is a five-star hotel located in the heart of the succulent greenery of the Masaai Mara. The hotel’s marvellous location high above the Masaai Mara provides you with a window onto the world with breath-taking views of the Kenyan savannah.

With three days to explore this magical region, there are plenty of activities to choose from, but our favorite? Waking up early, before the light of dawn, for a breathtaking hot air balloon ride, floating over the Mara before in total serenity as the sun comes up. You can also escape on a romantic getaway to the top of the hill where an old-world picnic set up with checked blankets, bubbly on ice and undisturbed views of the beautiful wilderness will be waiting for you. Be sure to immerse yourself in the real Masaai Mara culture too, with a trip to a neighboring village that will open your eyes to the colorful local traditions and customs. Needless to say, after any of these activities you’ll need a well-deserved break – and what could be better than a rocking chair right outside your room, looking out onto the magnificently wild savannah and the remarkable wildlife?

Zealous Zanzibar

From the action-packed Masaai Mara to the tranquillity of Zanzibar, you’ll fly via Nairobi to the definition of the dream beach hotel. In an idyllic location on the south-east coast of Zanzibar, the Zawadi Hotel is the perfect spot to end your gripping journey through Kenya and begin your four day Zanzibar experience. Oozing pure luxury, an atmosphere of true serenity and awe-inspiring views, Zawadi Hotel is the ideal springboard to exploring this captivating island. Whilst blissful peace and relaxation may be enough for some, Zawadi also offers you many activities if lounging in the sun just doesn’t cut it for you. Explore the crystal clear waters with snorkelling and diving, head out on a wondrous nature tour through the Mangrove Forest, or discover the capital of Stone Town, rich in indigenous culture. However, what we loved the most about this gem, was the Drift Wood Dining Room which offers you an authentic cocktail of Zanzibarian spices and local cuisine. Sensational spices, unforgettable views and exclusive five-star luxury, Zanzibar is the ultimate location for travelers in search of untainted tranquillity and the perfect place to end your East African adventure.

Trip Itinerary: 13 Days in Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar

You may not know this about me, but I have a serious medical condition. It requires me to plan trips on a near constant basis. While most people find the endless internet searching and forum scouring involved with planning a trip tedious, I actually enjoy it/require it for medical reasons. As part of my treatment, my doctor recommended I start a new category on my site: itineraries! And since I’ve taken and planned tons of multi-city trips ranging from under a week to over five months all over the globe, it only seems natural to share some of my wisdom with my devoted readers…for free! And just remember, you’re helping my health in the process. As a matter of fact, I feel better already. Without further ado, here is Kenya, an African safari itinerary including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, AND Zanzibar in under two weeks.

Budget: $3000 Cost of Flight: $1409 Travel Expenses: ~$1300 Amount Under Budget: $290 Comfort Level: Flashpacker

Day 1: Land in Nairobi

Morning coffee at milimani’s backpackers.

You will be disgustingly exhausted after two eight-hour flights and a layover in some random European city. We flew DC > London > Nairobi. I was also more hungover than I have ever been in my life , to this day. We arrived late, and stayed at the Milimani Backpacker’s hostel, which our friends had found ahead of time. The chef at the hostel is simple, but I highly endorse the tomato grilled cheese. I think I had five over the course of two meals.

Evening plans: Drink Tusker, meet strangers, early morning departure Wildlife: A rooster that started crowing in the wee hours of the morning

Day 2: Nairobi to Lake Naivasha

The road to lake naivasha.

If you make your way to the mess of matatus in the center of Nairobi, grab one heading for Naivasha. From there you can pick from a number of different campgrounds and guesthouses from which to explore the lake . Definitely negotiate with the matatu driver for a deal. But don’t negotiate to the point that one of your friends is about to vomit and then pass out and die in said vomit. There’s some etiquette to negotiating: if you’re arguing over 50 cents, just pay the man.

As soon as you get settled in Naivasha, get out on the lake and see them hippos! We stayed at Crayfish Camp which had options ranging from renting camping gear to private bungalows.

Day Plans: Take a matatu , find accomodation, get a boat out onto the lake. Evening plans: Drink and watch for hippos. See hippos. Get bikes for the next day. Ride bikes back to camp in complete darkness, try not to die . Wildlife: HIPPOOOOSS! Also, horses, and literally 400 different birds.

Day 3: Hell’s Gate National Park , return to Nairobi

Hell’s gate national park bike ride.

Hell’s Gate is the only safari park in all of Kenya in which you are permitted to ride bikes. Take advantage of this. From Crayfish Camp where we stayed, it was a few miles before entering the park. Here is a very important tip: bike into the park on Gorge Rd. Explore the gorge. If a man is there to offer a guide: accept it.

Now here is the most important part: EXIT THE PARK THE WAY YOU CAME! The Olkaira route leading out of the park in something of a loop is a gravel road that does nothing but ascend and descend at ridiculous inclines for its entire length. Also, this route takes you past the geothermal power station. The smell is overwhelming to say the least, and you will see no animals. Only Kenyans walking back from their jobs at the plant. Trust me on this one.

Day Plans: Bike through the park, climb the gorge, bike back the way you came, wash all the dirt off you, enjoy many cold beers. Evening Plans: Grab a matatu back to Nairobi, crash for the night. Wildlife: GIRAFFES! ZEBRA! WARTHOGS! OLIVE BABOONS! No lions just yet…

Day 4: Nairobi, Kenya to Arusha, Tanzania

View of arusha from the hostel.

Grab the earliest bus you can get yourself on from the bus station at the center of town. Whatever hostel or guest house you’re staying at should have this information for you. You’ll cross the border and arrive in Arusha hopefully in early afternoon. Find yourself a hostel (we stayed at Arusha Backpackers Hotel , which was nice and had a great rooftop bar) and then explore the city in all the ways it struggles, and fails, to be modern. You will be booking your safari and departing from here in the morning. We went with Sunny Safaris and didn’t have a single complaint.

Day Plans: Arrive, find hostel, wander, book safari Evening Plans: Get drunk with your friends, meet people at the hostel, don’t wander the streets. Wildlife: Mostly goats and cows

Day 5: Serengeti Safari Begins!

You will meet at the safari office early in the morning before being taken to a grocery store to procure supplies for the journey. The safari we booked provided all camping gear except for sleeping bags, cooked us hot meals three times a day, as well as offered free water and juices. But of course we wanted to load up on beer, cigarettes, whiskey, extra water, and some snack foods for munching. Beware while camping, those noises in the grass aren’t just the wind.

Plans: Enter the park, have a picnic, safari all day, camping all night! Wildlife: LIONS! MONKEYS! HIPPOS! ELEPHANTS! ZEBRA! WILDEBEASTS! Still no leopards or rhinos…

Day 6: Serengeti Camp to Ngorongoro Crater Rim

The great migration.

Witness The Great Migration of a million wildebeests and two hundred thousand zebra. Never be the same again. Then camp on the rim of the Ngorongoro crater and realize that camping will never be the same again.

Day Plans: Realize that you are in the most amazing place on the entire planet, remember what life is all about, think about quitting your job and traveling the world as soon as you get home. Evening Plans: Have the most incredible camping experience of your life, meet people from everywhere in the world, see every single star in the sky. Wildlife: A leopard in a tree! Oh shit, an elephant just walked right up to your truck. Then a buffalo stood in front of the bathroom at the campsite so you decided you didn’t have to pee that bad anyway.

Day 7: Explore Ngorongoro Crater, return to Arusha

Ngorongoro crater rim.

You thought your whole life changed yesterday, huh? Well wait until you see a million pink flamingos all in one place. The inside of the crater is a verdant, fertile paradise. Be amazed. And then have a picnic while you all discuss how amazed you are.

Day plans: Descend into the crater. Decide never to use the word amazing again unless you really mean in. Evening plans: Head back to Arusha, sort out bus tickets for early morning bus to Dar es Salaam. Wildlife: Flamingos! And a rhino! And you are actually bored by zebra now because they are fucking everywhere.

Day 8: Arusha > Dar es Salaam > Stone Town, Zanzibar

Stone town, zanzibar.

OK, this is going to be a little hectic. The last ferry to Zanzibar from Dar es Salaam leaves around 4pm and you have to catch a crack of dawn bus from Arusha, and then a taxi from the bus station, and pray you make it on time. We squeezed in on the last boat with about 15 minutes to spare. You can always spend a night in Dar es Salaam if you like, but we were much happier to spend it in Stone Town instead.

Day plans: Be completely exhausted while busing across half of Tanzania. Evening plans: Check into the Zanzibar Hotel and enjoy a nice dinner at Mercury’s on the beach. Wildlife: The homeless people living under The Big Tree in Zanzibar can get a little rowdy.

Days 9 – 12 Stone Town to Kendwa, Zanzibar

Kendwa beach, zanzibar.

You’ve been traveling nonstop for the last 9 days. You’re so used to being busy with plans that you’ve almost forgotten how to relax. Well now is the time. Take a private van or taxi to Kendwa beach and pick from any one of the glorious bungalows to soak it all in. Before we left Stone Town we did a spice plantation tour which was actually much more interesting than I thought it would be. You must buy some Zanzibar pepper. It’s like no other pepper in the world.

Once we arrived at the beach, we stayed at Kendwa Rocks Hotel and had a perfect experience. Days are endless with no itineraries in sight. Go scuba diving, go snorkeling, get drunk on the beach, stay sober on the beach: whatever floats your boat. The water is immaculately clear, the sunsets are the best show in town, and you’ve got nowhere else to be.

Day Plans: Whatever Evening Plans: Whatever Wildlife: Crafty monkeys and soooo many fishies!

Day 13: Time to Fly Home

If you’re anything like me when you travel, you will get really drunk on your last night, unknowingly book flights with a non-operating airline, and then rush to catch the only ferry that will get you to the airport in Dar es Salaam 15 minutes before your flight. Luckily, in Africa you can still get on a plane 10 minutes before it departs. Even more lucky for you is that you’re nothing like me and don’t trust in plane tickets that don’t involve a flight confirmation. Be sad to leave Zanzibar, be happy that your sunburn will soon fade into a tan, and spend a night laying over in London because, why not?

Day/Evening Plans: Wonder why you are going back to that job you hate in that town you only kind of like. Drink pints in London pubs in March while wearing a sundress because you didn’t know the airline would keep your luggage on an overnight layover. Wildlife: All the crazy people in Heathrow

Thoroughly enjoyed that story! Seems like you had indeed a wonderful time there.

Can you please advise the bus company you took from Arusha to Dar es Salaam, how much did that cost and how long did it take you?

' src=

Glad you enjoyed it! The bus from Arusha from Dar es Salaam was a nightmare at the crack of dawn and I have NO idea what company we took. I feel lucky we even got on the right bus! One of our friends almost didn’t make it…As far as how long it took, I believe it was a full day’s ride–about 8 hours. We left early in the morning and didn’t arrive in Dar es Salaam until around 4pm I think. I hope this helps!

I am cracking up at work reading this. Your first paragraph is me to a T. Which is how I stumbled upon your blog in the first place…doing research for an itinerary for the 3rd place I’m interested in for a possible trip in October. Everywhere seems so great, I just can’t decide! But this post is tipping the scales in Kenya’s favor.

Thanks so much!

Haha YES! The Serengeti is an easy choice when it comes to safaris! I am actually moving to South Africa in July, so will be testing out some other safari options further south. I’ll be sure to post about it for comparison. Let me know if you have any questions as you continue your exhaustive research 🙂

Itinerary idea in detail

Includes international flights from a choice of UK airports, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Nairobi.

On arrival in Nairobi, you will be met and transferred to Wilson Airport in time for your light aircraft flight to Nanyuki. You will be met by your guide and driven back to your camp in time for lunch. You can settle in before heading out on an afternoon safari in the excellent Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Keep an eye out for reticulated giraffe, Grévy's zebra and gerenuk antelope, along with the rhino that the reserve is famous for.

Zebra from Kicheche Laikipia

Spend today on safari from the beautiful Kicheche Laikipia Camp where you can enjoy morning and afternoon safari as well as night drives and walks. All the tents overlook a large waterhole so excellent sightings are common even from the camp.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya

Another day to spend exploring the wilderness of the Laikipia Plateau on guided excursions from the camp. Choose from walking, morning and afternoon safari, night drives and visits to the chimpanzee and rhino sanctuaries nearby.

Lioness from Kicheche Laikipia

Today, you will be transferred to the airstrip at Nanyuki in time for your light aircraft flight to the Masai Mara. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to Kicheche Bush Camp for the next four nights, enjoying some fabulous wildlife viewing en route. Once you have settled in and enjoyed some lunch, there is some time to relax before you go on a late afternoon safari to explore this wildlife-rich area.

Wildebeest crossing the Mara River

In the Mara, you can enjoy morning and afternoon safaris from your camp as well as short walks, night drives and sundowners out in the open. As the camp is situated in a private conservancy within the Mara, the number of camps and vehicles here is strictly limited, giving you by far the best safari experience away from the busier areas of the park.

Hippo yawn, Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is big cat country, so keep your eyes peeled for lion, cheetah and, of course, the very elusive leopard. You will be able to enjoy walks with local Maasai guides on the open plains.

Male lions, Masai Mara

Your final full day on safari from Kicheche Naboisho Camp, which you can spend exploring this beautiful reserve. The Masai Mara has some of the best populations of wildlife in Africa, so make the most of your time here.

Zebras, Masai Mara

This morning, there should be time for one last safari before you return to Nairobi by a light aircraft. On arrival in Nairobi, you will be greeted at the domestic airport and transferred across to the international airport, stopping for a leisurely lunch at a restaurant en route (lunch is payable locally). You will then check in for your early evening flight to Zanzibar. On arrival, you will be met by a driver and private vehicle who will transfer you across the island to the beautiful palm-fringed east coast where you can relax after your safari and enjoy the activities on offer.

Fishing dhow, Zanzibar

At leisure at Pongwe Beach Hotel — you can spend the day relaxing and unwinding here on the beautiful stretch of beach, or read a book under the shade of a palm tree by the pool. If you're feeling more active, you can easily arrange diving or snorkelling along with other excursions to explore the island through the reception.

Matemwe Beach

One of our favourite things to do in Zanzibar is to visit one of the small-scale spice farms on the island — you get a really hands-on experience tasting and smelling the spices for which the island is famous.

Fisherman and his ngalawa

Another area to explore on Zanzibar is the enchanting Jozani Forest, where you can see the rare red Kirk's colobus monkeys. These monkeys are endemic to the island and are really entertaining to watch leap and play in the trees.

Ngalawa, Zanzibar

For something completely different to the beach, you could head into Stone Town one day for a day trip — the town is located on the west coast and is a busy and bustling town. You can hire a guide to help you explore the narrow alleyways and cobbled streets, learning about the town's fascinating past with a rich and dramatic history as a centre of colonial exploration and of the East African slave trade. It's also a great opportunity to pick up any souvenirs.

Zanzibar Island

You will be transferred to the airport today for your onward flights.

The Rock Restaurant, Zanzibar

Arrive home today to complete your journey.

Zanzibar | Tropical Island Paradise

When you need a holiday after your holiday, you simply add Zanzibar to the tail end of your safari. Zanzibar is a Tropical Island paradise with a lot of depth and history, having long attracted seafarers, traders and merchants to its iconic shoreline. Set in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is an archipelago of different islands that each offer something unique.

On the main island, Stone Town provides a labyrinth of bustling markets and streets carved in history and many cultures.

Pure wildlife adventures and surreal seaside escapes await you on this 10-day adventure from Kenya to Zanzibar. Discover the majestic animals wandering some of Kenya’s beloved reserves, such as Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Aberdare National Park, Lake Nakuru, and Masai Mara before you retreat to the shimmering shores hugging the coastline of Tanzania’s archipelago, Zanzibar, all while indulging in the luxury of the untouched bush and sea.

Customizable Itinerary

Ol pejeta conservancy - africa’s rare and endangered wildlife.

Your wildlife adventures will begin in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city, as you touch down and transfer to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Entering the gates of the impressive conservation area, you will be blown away by almost immediate animal sightings from the window of your private vehicle. Situated between the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares, Ol Pejeta is home to an array of rare and endangered wildlife species you will hope to chance upon during an afternoon game drive from your safari lodge.

What's Included:

Aberdare National Park - Remarkable Views and Wildlife Discoveries

Your second day in Kenya will bring you closer to the soaring peaks of the Aberdare Mountain Range, and you will find refuge at a gorgeous safari escape pinned in the Aberdare National Park. Tucked away on the slopes of Mweiga Hill, a pitstop at an elegant country club boasts unparalleled views of the highlands and the fascinating flora and fauna thriving in this rich region. Today, you will meander through an emerald forest in search of elephants, black rhinos, leopards, spotted hyenas, olive baboons, and more before you arrive at your next accommodation.

Lake Nakuru - Fabulous Flamingo Sightings in Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru is a world-famous destination, most notably known for its massive flocks of flamingos that gather in the shallow waters of the sparkling lake. As you travel to your next safari escape today, you will stop at observation decks and viewpoints overlooking the unspoiled volcanic terrain and glowing lake. The ribbon of pink flamingos will be a spectacular sight, and you will be thrilled to explore more of the national park as you make your way to an accommodation nestled in the region’s untamed landscape.

Masai Mara - Safaris across the Great Rift Valley

Regarded as one of Kenya’s premier wildlife sanctuaries, the Masai Mara reserve is a safari lover’s paradise that you will come to adore from the moment you cross its enormous golden savannas and arrive at your camp hemmed in the bushveld. Your suite will overlook the Talek River, and you may catch glimpses of animals wandering around the grasslands from your balcony before you join an experienced ranger on a guided 4x4 safari. You will venture across the Great Rift Valley this afternoon in search of Africa’s Big Five.

Masai Mara - Nocturnal Sightings and Beautiful Bush Walks

With another day to discover Masai Mara, you will set off early in the morning before sunrise and hope to capture images of big cats hunting in the dark. Your ranger will illuminate the bushveld with a spotlight, helping you see into the night and witness Africa’s nocturnal activity. In the afternoon, you will traverse more of the reserve and see animals gathering around waterholes as well as predators lurking across the plains. You may also revel in a bushwalk bringing you closer to the natural wonders than ever before.

Zanzibar - Living the Island-Style Life

Tuck into breakfast with views of Masai Mara’s open plains before taking part in one final game drive en route to the airport. Your scheduled flight will lead you away from Kenya’s sprawling wilderness to the shimmering coastlines of the Tanzanian archipelago’s crown jewel, Zanzibar.

Sécurité Kenya : comment partir l'esprit tranquille ?

Zanzibar safari tours

A safari tour package in Tanzania is typically organized by a tour operator, safari tour company or via a self drive Africa safari trip, taking into consideration the number of days visitors would like to allocate for beach time and safari activities.

Given the distance between parks, it is important to take many elements into account when visitors plan their Zanzibar safari and beach tour including:

  • Which animals you would like to see
  • Budget for the trip
  • Travel party (solo, with friends or a larger family group)
  • Activities you would like to include (hot air balloon, hiking)
  • Beaches you would like to see as there are many great beaches in Zanzibar which visitors enjoy as well as the nearby islands of Pamunda , Pemba island , Chumbe and Unguja Island .

Best time to go on a beach and safari in Zanzibar

Tanzania is a beautiful country to visit, regardless of the season and popular with visitors from the U.S, Europe and South Africa.

Certain periods are more favorable for a safari in the best conditions. To know the best time to visit Zanzibar , visitors should take into consideration the following key criteria:

  • Regions visited
  • Weather conditions

The best time to visit Zanzibar for a beach and safari trip is during the dry season, from late June to October. The Zanzibar beaches are dry with no rains and the summer months are ideal for the Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings and impressive wildlife sightings.

Zanzibar and Tanzania safari cost

Tanzania is a premier safari destination in Africa, thus incurring the more expensive costs associated with this.

There are multiple factors that can impact the cost of a safari in Tanzania including accommodation selected, trip duration, safari costs, tours, flight transfers from Zanzibar island to game reserves on the mainland, transfers, meal options and additional activities visitors may request.

Travellers on a budget can reduce costs by booking their own flights, accommodation and the best things to do in Zanzibar as well as hiring a 4*4 to travel between the parks and reserves.

Visitors will often find dedicated safari travel agencies to be the best option in booking their dream safari. These agencies have many years experience in booking safaris as well as multiple partnerships with local tourism networks and lodges/game reserves.

Travel agencies typically offer:

  • Local tour guides
  • Trips to must-see wildlife areas and parks
  • All transportation from Stone Town in Zanzibar to the game reserve
  • High quality accommodation at reduced prices
  • Day safaris and full day itineraries customised to your requirements

The cost of the service of these specialized agencies can be a bit higher compared to other options, a cost worth bearing given the quality and ease of services provided.

Organizing your own safari is possible but only recommended for more experienced travelers and visitors on a strict budget.

Accommodation

Visitors typically will have the choice between lodges, chalets and campsites as well as African tent camps, suites and bedrooms.

Luxurious facilities are common including swimming pools, restaurants, bars, spas and terraces. Game viewings and plane transfers are organized by the accommodation providers.

Trip preparation

Travellers can fly to Zanzibar via the island’s main airport (ZNZ) for visitors wondering how to get to Zanzibar .

A tourist visa is required to enter Zanzibar for U.S, U.K, Canada and EU citizens. Tanzania has introduced an ‘e-visas’ system through which applications can be submitted and approved online in advance of travel.

It is also possible to get a tourist or business visa for a single entry on arrival at main ports of entry to Tanzania, subject to the fulfilment of all immigration requirements. Visitors may also be asked to provide proof of their return journey.

A visitor’s passport must be valid for at least 6 months with at least one free blank page and and certain vaccinations may also be required to enter the country.

The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Zanzibar and Tanzania: Covid-19, Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza.

Most safari parks are high-risk zones. The highest risk of transition is in the rainy season from November to May.

Further details on Zanzibar vaccine & covid info here .

USD $1/GBP £0.75 =  Approximately 2,322 TZS.

Carrying a small amount of Zanzibar currency , the Tanzania Shilling (TZS) is recommended as back-up when paying for items where credit card facilities are unavailable.

Driving in Zanzibar and Tanzania

Driving is conducted on the left hand side of the road in Zanzibar and driving is generally considered to be safe.

Visitors driving through parks may require a 4×4, whilst carrying a map & GPS is recommended.

Visitors should consider travel insurance when planning their trip to help protect and cover the costs of hospitalization or repatriation if required.

Some credit cards may already include travel insurance. Online travel insurance comparators are also useful in finding suitable offers.

Mainland Tanzania and the Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar are stunning destinations. Visiting both provides a wonderful experience of the best that Tanzania has to offer. You can enjoy the safari of a lifetime in the national parks on the mainland, then follow it up with a chilled beach holiday on Zanzibar, which also has a superb cultural and architectural legacy. 6 Questions About Tanzania Safaris With Zanzibar Add-on

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

safari kenya depuis zanzibar

Why is a Tanzania safari and a Zanzibar beach holiday an ideal combination?

“Trips that combine a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar will be a special experience because it is easy to travel between the two, yet they span such a variety of worlds. The Tanzanian mainland has many different attractions that cover a range of activities. But above all else, it is famous as one of the best safari destinations on Earth. The incredible wildlife, with beautiful landscapes as a backdrop, fills national parks such as Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Nyerere (formerly Selous Game Reserve), Gombe and more. Hiking is also brilliant in Tanzania, from the ascent of Mt Kilimanjaro or Mt Meru to the lesser-known Usambara Mountains. Zanzibar couldn’t be more different. The island is a fabulous beach destination, with a stunning coastline and resorts to match. It’s also home to Stone Town, a glorious maze of hybrid African and Arab architecture where the streets fill with the smell of spices and the call to prayer. Being able to experience all of this on one trip is simply wonderful.”

What can I expect from a trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar?

“Combining your Tanzania safari with Zanzibar means spending as much time as you can in the fantastic national parks on the mainland, then flying directly onto the island of Zanzibar. How long you stay in each place, and the order in which you visit them (most people go on safari first), will be determined by where your greatest interest lies and how much time you have. But the flight between the two is just long enough for you to catch your breath in readiness for what comes next. On the mainland safari leg, expect to be thrilled by the abundant wildlife for which Tanzania is famous, although what you see will depend on which parks you visit. Most commonly, especially on a first trip to Tanzania, travelers prioritize the Northern safari circuit, which includes Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. On Zanzibar, you’ll need to make the difficult choice between how much time to spend on the beach and how much time you need to explore Stone Town: a difficult choice because they’re both such pleasurable experiences.”

How much will this tour cost?

“Costs vary greatly for trips that include a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar. As a starting point, expect to pay US$150 to US$250 per person per day for a budget safari, and upward (sometimes significantly upward) of US$400 per person per day for high-end luxury tours. A big variable when it comes to determining the cost of your trip is the level of luxury you would like to enjoy. Most often, this has to do with the accommodations you’ll be staying in. Another factor to consider is the season in which you’re traveling: the cost of high-season packages can be double that of low season. The length of trips is also something that will affect the price: the flight between the Tanzanian mainland and Zanzibar can be expensive, but its impact on the per-person daily cost will be less if you’re traveling for longer. The final main variable when it comes to cost is the type of safari you choose. A private safari (where you’ll have your own vehicle and guide just for you for the duration of your holiday) is obviously the most expensive option. Group safaris (where you share vehicles and guides) are cheaper. If you choose a self-drive safari, the costs will lie somewhere between group and private safaris. As a rule, the combination of pricier lodges and high park entrance fees means that the safari leg of your trip will cost much more per day than staying on Zanzibar. This means that you can cut costs by spending less time on safari and more at the beach.”

What is the ideal holiday length for a Tanzania safari with a stay in Zanzibar?

“The short answer to this question is that the longer you have, the better! How long you stay will, of course, depend on how much time you have available and how much you’re willing to pay for your trip. As a starting point, most people would regard 8 to 12 days (exclusive of international flights) as the ideal length of a trip combining a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar, but shorter itineraries are workable and the upper limit is as long as you want it to be. To visit mainland Tanzania on safari, you may want to visit a number of parks. If you do this, you could fly between them, thereby saving traveling time but also increasing the cost of your safari. A week on the Northern safari circuit is just about long enough to fit in the four main parks there (Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti), but 8 days or longer on safari would be more relaxed. Other activities, such as chimp trekking in the parks of western Tanzania or climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, will obviously add numerous days to your calculations. For the Zanzibar section of your trip, so much depends on how much time you want to spend by the beach. Stone Town could be seen in a day, but you’ll definitely want to immerse yourself in its charms for longer.”

What is the best time to visit Tanzania and Zanzibar?

“For mainland Tanzania, the best time for safari holidays is from June to October. This coincides with the Dry season, meaning that you’re more likely to enjoy favorable weather and road conditions. The Dry season is also the best time for seeing wildlife, as the animals are more likely to be closer to known water sources and therefore easier to find. If you’re a birder, you may want to consider the months from November to April, when migrating birds spend nearly six months in the country. If you’re hoping to see the great wildebeest migration in the Serengeti, when around 2 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle migrate through the park, often with predators in tow, then the best months are January to February in the south, June to July in the west, and August to September in the north. Zanzibar is very much a year-round destination: it’s always warm enough to go to the beach. That said, the best weather is usually from June or July until October, while the rainiest months are April and to a lesser extent March and May.”

How do I get to Zanzibar from mainland Tanzania?

“The overwhelming majority of Tanzania safari and Zanzibar tours and trips involve flying between mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Sometimes the flights may be direct from an airstrip in one of the national parks (such as the Serengeti) to Zanzibar. On other packages, you may need to change planes in Arusha, the gateway city to the Northern circuit. If you’re changing in Arusha, you may end up traveling on two very different kinds of planes – a small plane to and from the national parks, then a commercial airliner from Arusha to Zanzibar. There are lots of different possibilities, so ask any prospective tour operators when making your trip inquiries. Regular ferry (boat) services connect Dar es Salaam (the largest city on the Tanzanian mainland) to Zanzibar, and the quickest take less than an hour. However, ferries are seldom used for safari extensions to Zanzibar because you would first need to fly to Dar to catch one.”
