For instance, we must seek Allah’s protection from any harm during travelling by reciting Dua for Travelling .

Whether we travel by car, train, or airplane, we must recite certain Duas before starting our journey . Of course, we plan ahead of time, but no one is certain how our plan progresses or ends. Therefore, Muslims must seek Allah’s direction and assistance to reach their destinations safely and return home to their family. While you do so, opt for Dua Travels to maximize your experience.

Islam allows all Muslims to travel when the intentions are for the right purpose. While reciting  Dua for travelling , Muslims must firmly believe in Allah (SWT) and His blessings. He is the only one who has the power to protect us from unfortunate events like accidents and the harm of travelling. Let us explore some of the most beneficial as we must recite before and during the journey.

What Does the Holy Quran Say about Travelling?

Holy Quran, the sacred scripture, is the book of wisdom that teaches man the purpose of life and guides Muslims on the right way to lead their lives. The Islamic Holy Book covers all aspects of life and directs Muslims to success in this world and hereafter. According to the Quran, this world is temporary, and human beings are in a constant state of Travel. However, Allah (SWT) also mentions physical travelling several times.

In the Quran, ‘sayyir’ refers to the one who travels. The word sayir literally means to move or travel. Allah (SWT) used this word 27 times in the Quran in several expressions, including “Do Travel,” “Do they not Travel,” and “Tell them to Travel.”

Do they then not travel through the Earth, so that their minds gain wisdom and their ears thus learn to hear? 22:46

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) also emphasized travelling. He told the believers that travelling is a great way to expand their horizons and seek knowledge. In one instance, he said

“Keep  to  travelling by night  because the earth is folded (traversed more easily) during the  night .” [Abu Dawud].

Dua Before Travelling

Shariah recommends to off 2 rakaat nawafil before starting travel. It is because the Holy Prophet (PBUH) performed this task before going on any journey. You can get the confirmation of this practice from the following hadith.

Dua Before Travelling

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil. When you enter your home, perform another two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil.”

(Musnad Al-Bazzar)

O Allah I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, a sight of grief, and from an unfortunate occurrence in wealth and family.

Whenever a Muslim travels or steps out of the home for a journey, whether it is a short distance or long distance traveling, we recite some duas. So we can have a safe journey and receive the blessings of Almighty Allah.

  • Allah grants the traveler ease in his journey.
  • Reciting duas leads to blessings from Allah.

Hundreds of thousands of people usually die because of traffic accidents in bikes, cars, planes, etc., all across the world, so traveling can be quite fatal. As we grew up, we heard about a lot of plane crashes and other dangerous events. So we need to seek help from Allah to stay protected and safe, and he is the only one who can protect us from dangerous hazards and accidents.

We must also try our best to minimize our traveling unless it is necessary or urgent as Muslims. We need to recite duas more often so we can stay blessed and safe from the curse of shaitan at the same time.

O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor over the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the difficulties of travel, from having an unpleasant sight, and from harmful consequences in my wealth and family.”

Understanding the Essence of Dua When Traveling

In Islam, dua is an integral part of our relationship with Allah. It is a way to communicate our hopes, fears, and desires, seeking His guidance and blessings in all aspects of life. Dua is a reflection of our faith, humility, and trust in the Divine. When we make dua, we acknowledge our dependence on Allah and His control over every aspect of our lives. Through dua, we establish a profound connection with our Creator, finding solace and strength in His infinite mercy.

Dua Before the Journey

Embarking on a journey is an exciting yet uncertain time. Before setting foot outside our homes, it is crucial to seek Allah’s protection and blessings. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever leaves his home, and says: ‘In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah, there is no might nor power except with Allah,’ it will be said to him: ‘You have been guided, defended, and protected,’ and the devil will go far away from him” (Sunan Abu Dawood).

In preparation for your journey, take a moment to make dua. Seek Allah’s protection from all potential hardships and calamities that may come your way. Offer supplications for a smooth and safe journey, accompanied by His divine mercy. By starting your travels with the remembrance of Allah, you invoke His blessings and pave the way for a secure expedition.

Dua During the Journey

As you embark on your journey, the significance of dua remains steadfast. Each step, whether on land, air, or sea, presents unique challenges and unforeseen circumstances. In these moments, turning to Allah through dua provides us with tranquility and assurance. Are there specific duas for different modes of travel?

Yes, there are supplications and prayers tailored to various forms of travel. These include prayers for boarding a plane, driving, sailing, or any other mode of transportation. These specific duas ensure that we seek Allah’s protection and blessings throughout the journey.

Five Powerful Duas and Prayers for Traveling

Prayers for Traveling

Last updated on November 17th, 2021 at 08:40 am

Have you ever found yourself on the plane ready to take off, but unable to find your booklet of prayers for traveling? Often we find ourselves without access to these special duas or prayers when we need them the most. In our opinion, memorizing duas is the best solution.

One of the beautiful things about Islam is that there is a prayer for our normal daily activities and even prayers for traveling abroad .  When we embark on a journey, we should recite a prayer to Allah and remember Him. It brings us closer to Allah and also saves us from any untoward incident that may take place on our journey.

As per Islamic teachings, reciting a dua not only brings Allah’s protection; it also mobilizes angels to protect us during our journey and bring us safely back home to our loved ones.

Below are the five common duas that Muslims recite before journeys, complete with Arabic verse, dua transliteration, source, and explanation.

1. Prayer for Safety When Embarking on Travel

  • Arabic Verse:
  • Dua Transliteration: Rabbi anzilni munzalan mubarokan wa anta khairul munzilin
  • English Translation: My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing-place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].
  • Source: Surah Al Muminun ayat 29

When embarking on travel, this dua is recited to protect oneself from any mishap and to ensure a safe landing. When you recite this dua, you will feel calmer and less anxious about your upcoming trip.

It is always helpful to start a journey by remembering Allah. This prayer is useful to keep with you whenever you are packing for your trip so that you can easily recite it once you leave your home or on the plane.

This prayer asks Allah to protect us when traveling abroad . It also helps us proclaim our faith and affirm the fact that there is no one that can protect us except Allah.

2. Prayer for Safety During the Trip

  • Arabic Verse:
  • English Translation: Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord, we shall return.
  • Source: Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14

This excerpt from Surah Az-Zukhruf is a masnoon prayer that thanks Allah for providing us with the means of transportation to make our journey. This dua is short and can be easily memorized so that it becomes a habit to recite it when on a journey.

The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) recited this Surah as dua when he would mount an animal for traveling . He would say Bismillah and then recite this prayer for travel safety . We may be traveling by car, plane, train, or boat; whatever the means of transportation is, it is always important to remember Allah during our journey.

3. Prayer for Traveling to a New Place

  • Arabic Verse:
  • Dua Transliteration: Wa-qul Rabbi Adkhilnee Mudkhala S’idqiw Wa Akhrijnee Mukhraja S’diqiw Waj-a’l Lee Mil Ladunkaa Sult’aanan Nas’eeraa
  • English Translation: O Lord, cause me to enter a goodly entrance and cause me to go out a goodly exit, and grant me from you an authority to assist (me).
  • Source: Sura Al-‘Isra 17:80

The prophet (ﷺ) was in Makkah and had to emigrate to Madinah when Allah revealed this verse. The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) was being attacked by individuals in Makkah and was preparing to enter a new place.

This verse asks for Allah’s protection when taking a big decision and traveling to a new place. This decision could be anything from moving to a new city to even moving to a new home. In this prayer, we are asking Allah to bless our entrance and exit. We are looking for His assistance and blessing while we take this decision.

4. Prayer upon Reaching Destination Safely

  • Arabic Verse:
  • Dua Transliteration: Va kealarkaboo feehea bismilleahi macreahea va murseahea, inna raabbee la gaafoorun raaheem
  • English Translation: Embark there in! In the name of Allah be its course or its mooring. Lo! My Lord is Forgiving and Merciful!
  • Source: Surah Al-Hud – 11:41

This verse is from Sura Hud, which relays the trials and tribulations of Prophet Noah allehisalam. Prophet Noah was commanded by Allah to create a ship and load it with two creatures (male and female) of every living thing that had a soul.

When the command came to leave on the ship, a strong storm came that brought heavy rainfall. This verse was then revealed at that time and means that the moving course and resting (anchorage) of the ship will be all in Allah’s hands.

This is a specific verse in the Surah and is often used when someone reaches their destination safely. It is a small and short prayer that can be memorized easily when traveling abroad and after you have reached your destination.

5. Prayer Upon Returning Home

  • Arabic Verse:
  • Dua Transliteration: Ayibun, ta’ibun, ‘abidun, sajidun, lirabbina hamidun
  • English Translation: We return, repentant, worshipping, prostrating, and praising our Lord.
  • Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 3084

This short prayer for travel safety is part of a longer verse that the Holy Prophet would recite upon returning from his journeys. After he came back from a journey, he would say Allah u Akbar three times and then recite this dua.

It is important not to forget Allah once we have returned safely to our homes. Often we only remember Allah when we are starting our journey or when we are in the process of traveling. But we should be grateful to Allah once we return safe and sound.

This dua only has a few words and can be easily learned by heart so that you can recite it quickly once you return home safely after traveling abroad.

Now You Know the 5 Powerful Duas and Prayers for Traveling

We can see that all of the prayers for traveling safety are not very long and can be remembered very easily. One should understand that when you are traveling, you are putting yourself in the trust of Allah and his powers.

Only Allah can decide what our fate is, but by saying prayers before we start our journey, during the journey, and when we reach home, we are affirming the fact that we believe in Allah’s power to protect us from harm.

Duas For Travelling

Table of Contents

Travelling always comes with an unpredictable aspect. Regardless of how much you plan, you will never know how the journey will progress or end. Every year hundreds of thousands of people lose their lives because of vehicular accidents and plane crashes. This is where Islam comes in to protect you. Islam is an amazing religion that teaches us to have faith in Allah (SWT) and live our lives according to the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

One of the best things about Islam is that we have a dua for almost everything, whether it’s sitting, eating, sleeping, or traveling. While reciting the duas for travelling , a Muslim seeks help from Allah (SWT) to stay safe and protected as He is the only one who can protect us from accidents and dangerous hazards. Keep reading to learn more about the duas for traveling .

What Does Allah Say About Travelling?

safe trip dua

The Holy Quran is the religious book of Islam and is considered the ultimate guide for Muslims. In the Holy Quran, Allah (SWT) describes our life as a journey, with ignorance and knowledge being analogous to the dark and light on the way, respectively.  The Quran has numerous references for Muslims to follow in order to go through a better worldly yet spiritual journey. However, in several places, Allah (SWT) has placed special emphasis on the significance of physical travel.

In the Quran, the word “saiyr” is used to refer to a traveller. The literal meaning of saiyr is to travel or move; for example; the planets are called sayyarah. The term saiyr appears in the Holy Quran 27 times. In most places, it’s used in the formulation of “Tell them to travel,” “Do they not travel,” or “Do travel.”

On the significance of travelling in Islam, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (SWT)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the One who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. (al-Bayhaqi, at-Tirmidhi – Sahih)

Duas for Travelling in a Car

To protect yourself and your travel companions it is recommended by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to recite the following Surah, with a wish to have a safe and blessed journey:

“With the Name of Allah. Praise is to Allah. Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never have had it by our efforts. Surely, unto our Lord, we are returning. Praise is to Allah . Praise is to Allah. Praise is to Allah. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Glory is to You. O Allah, I have wronged my own soul. Forgive me, for surely none forgives sins but You.” (Abu Dawud 3/34, At-Tirmidhi 5/501)

In general, having been often mentioned in the Quran, travelling  is a way to achieve insight and wisdom by broadening an individual’s horizons and potential

Duas for Travelling on Plane

Travelling is viewed as a good deed in Islam. this is mainly because in Islam, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his Ummah succeeded in spreading Islam through exploration and travelling. The act of travelling also strengthens our belief, aboutwhich Allah (SWT) says in the Quran: “Say (O Muhammad): ‘ Travel through the earth and see how Allah did originate creation.'” (Surah Al-Ankabut, Verse 20)

Therefore, following the Sunnah – acts of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) – it is advised that every Muslim should follow the exemplary Adab (etiquette) mentioned below, while travelling out of the city or country:

  • Dua When You Leave the House | Praying 2 Raka’at of Sunnah

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), on the adab of leaving your house for travelling , stated: “When you leave your house, perform two raka’at, and this will safeguard you against evils. When you return home, perform another two raka’at, and this will safeguard you against evils.” (Hadith reported by Al-Bazzar and al-Bayhaqi)

Furthermore, in “Al-Majmu,” Imam An-Nawawi mentions that while performing the two raka’at , in the first raka’at, one should recite Surah Al-Kafirun after Surah Al-Fatiahah. However, in the second raka’at, one should recite Surah Ikhlas after Surah Al-Fatihah.

  • When You Commence Your Journey

For the following verse, Anas bin Malik (RA) narrates that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that: “Whoever says upon leaving his house (recites the below-mentioned verses) it will be said to him: ‘You are guided, defended and protected.’ The devil will go far away from him.”

“Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah”

“I begin with the Name of Allah; I trust in Allah; there is no altering of conditions but by the Power of Allah.”

( Hadith reported by Abu Daud, At-Tirmidhi, and An-Nasa’i)

  • Dua Upon Boarding the Plane

When one enters or boards the plane, it is advised by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to recite the following verses to have a blessed and safe journey:

“Bismillah, Walhamdulillah. Subhanal-ladzi sakh-khara lana hadza wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbina lamun-qalibun.”

“In the name of Allah and all praise is for Allah. How perfect He is, the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service, and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny.”

(Hadith reported by Abu Daud and At-Tirmidhi)

  • Dua When You Arrive at Your Destination | Enter a New Country or City

According to the narration of Suhaib (RA), Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would recite the following verse when he looked at the town that he wished to enter:

“Allahumma rabbas samawatis sab’i wa ma azlalna, wa rabbal ardinas sab’i wa ma aqlalna, wa rabbash-shayatini wa ma adlalna, wa rabbar riyahi wa ma zaraina, as’aluka khaira hadzihil qaryah wa khaira ahliha, wa khaira ma fiha, wa a’udzubika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha, wa sharri ma fiha.”

“O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all that they envelop, Lord of the seven earths and all that they carry, Lord of the devils and all whom they misguide, Lord of the winds and all whom they whisk away. I ask You for the goodness of this village, the goodness of its inhabitants, and for all the goodness found within it, and I take refuge with You from the evil of this village, the evil of its inhabitants, and from all the evil found within it.”

(Hadith reported by An-Nasa’i and Al-Hakim)

  • Dua Upon Entering the Place to Stay (Hotel)

When entering a hotel, people are usually unknown to the history of their place of stay. Therefore, to safeguard themselves from all possible hazards and accidents, it is recommended by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to recite the following verses:

“A’udzu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq”

“I seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words from every evil (that has been created).”

(Hadith reported by Muslim)

Khawalah binte Hakim As-Sulaimiyyah (RA) narrates for the aforementioned verses that she heard Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saying, “Whoever, on arrival, says (verse mentioned above) no evil shall befall him until he departs from where he arrived.”

  • Dua When Facing Difficulties

There will be several times when travelling when one might feel lost. In such a case, it is advised to perform zikr (remembrance) of Allah (SWT) and istighfar (for forgiveness) for our sins.

In a narration by Abdullah bin Abbas (RA), it is stated that, “Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that if a person constantly makes Istighfar (i.e., “Astaghfirullah”), then Allah removes every difficulty, frees him from every sorrow and makes a means for him to receive sustenance from places that he never thought of.” (Hadith reported by Ahmad)

  • Dua Upon Returning Home | Praying 2 Raka’at of Sunnah

As it is advised to pray two raka’at when leaving for a journey, it is also recommended to pray two raka’at when returning home.  Jabir (RA), in a narration, says that: “I was travelling with the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) When we reached Madinah, He Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said to me, “Enter the mosque and pray two raka’at.”

Also, it is recommended to perform the prayer in the same way as the two raka’at prayers before leaving the house.

Duas for Our Parents

There is no love more pure and selfless except for the love of your parents. Everyone’s parents love them unconditionally, and regardless of all and worldly reasons. And realistically stating it is nearly impossible for a child to reciprocate that love. Therefore, being Muslims, the best thing that you can do is recite the following duas wishing a happy and blessed life for your parents:

  • Dua for the Happiness of Your Parents:

“RabbiawziAAnee an ashkura niAAmataka allatee anAAamta AAalayya waAAalawalidayya waan aAAmala salihan tardahuwaaslih lee fee thurriyyatee innee tubtuilayka wa-innee mina almuslimeen”

“My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work the righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.” ( Quran 46:15)

  • Dua for the Long Life of Your Parents:

“Adhhib al-ba’s Rabb an-naas, wa’shfi anta al-Shaafi, laa shifaa’a illa shifaa’uka shifaa’an laa yughaadir saqaman”

Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5351, Muslim, 2191)

How to Recite Traveling Dua?

Performing a Dua, or prayer, in Islam doesn’t need any special preparations like wudu (ablution), usually done before prayers. However, as a Muslim, it is better to always remain neat and clean, including when you’re travelling.

Starting your journey? It’s an ideal time to offer your Dua for travelling .  There is a set pattern for offering a Dua in Islam. It includes:

  • Start with the name of Allah (S.W.T.)
  • Recite the specific dua for that particular need
  • End with durud (sending peace and blessings upon Prophet Muhammad  ﷺ)

Remember, you can always recite the travelling dua straightaway if you prefer. This isn’t a strict rule, just a way to make your journey more blessed.

Translation :

Glory be to the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our, Lord is our final destiny. O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of ours, and we ask You for deeds which please You. O Allah, facilitate our journey and let us cover its distance quickly. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor (the One Who guards them in a person’s absence) over the family. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the difficulties of travel, from having a change of heart and from being in a bad predicament, and I seek refuge with You from an ill-fated outcome with regard to wealth and family. – (Narrated by Muslim, 1342)

Can you see, how beautifully Allah has guided His men in every aspect of life? Can you see why Islam is seen as a code of life? It is because of these minute precisions Allah has given to us! The one who has created us has formulated basic codes so that we are not left alone anywhere, and we remind ourselves that Allah is present nearest to us and takes care of our journey. We just need to work on the ethics of travel. We need to recite the days telling Allah that we only put our trust in Him.

Q. Should You Pray Before Traveling?

A. Yes, it is highly recommended to say 2 raka’at nafal prayers before you start your journey. As the Prophet PBUH said:

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evils. When you return home, perform another two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evils.”

Similarly, when you come back home after the journey, you should again say 2 raka’at prayer to thank Allah.

Q. Are Duas Accepted When Traveling?

A. The Prophet PBUH has told us about certain times of the day or certain instances in life when the chances of acceptance of prayer are very high. One of these times is when a Muslim is traveling. So if your trip and your dua are both for a good reason, remember Allah during the journey and He will surely remember you.

As the Prophet PBUH said:

Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (SWT)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. [al-Bayhaqi, at-Tirmidhi – Sahih]

Important Duas for Travelling

Are you preparing for a trip and want to ensure it goes smoothly? Travel is an integral part of our lives, and Islam provides special prayers, called Duas, for protection during journeys.

This article will guide you through important Duas in Islam that are specific for travel, ensuring safety and blessings throughout your journey. Let’s delve into these sacred recitations; they could be the invisible shield you need on your next adventure!

The Importance of Duas When Travelling

Important Duas for Travelling

Duas play an essential role in every journey of a Muslim. Through these prayers, you are committing your trip to Allah SWT for more than just a safe journey. It is about accepting that every step taken, every moment of the journey, and any potential hazards along the way are guided by divine providence.

Duas strengthen your faith by erecting an invisible safety net around you and all accompanying passengers. Before traveling, the Islamic tradition recommends a specific Dua, which encapsulates trust in Allah’s wisdom and surrender to His will.

Specific Duas focus on blessing your transportation means, such as saying ‘Subhan Alladhi Sakh-khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin…’, thanking Him for providing serviceable vehicles despite our inability to control them ourselves.

This emphasizes gratitude as an essential component of embarking on journeys, remembering that each successful journey is a mercy from Allah SWT.

What Does Allah SWT Say About Travelling?

What Does Allah SWT Say About Travelling

In Islam, travel holds a significant place as Allah SWT encourages exploration of the earth in various verses in the Quran. It is seen as an opportunity for worldly gains and experiences and a means to spiritual growth.

According to Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 20 , Allah SWT states:

قُلْ سِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ بَدَأَ ٱلْخَلْقَ ۚ ثُمَّ ٱللَّهُ يُنشِئُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرٌۭ

“Say (O Muhammad), “Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allah will bring it into being one more time. Surely Allah is Most Capable of everything.” This statement illustrates that traveling can deepen our understanding of life’s origin and complexity.

In another verse, Surah Zukhruf ayat 13-14 , Allah SWT provides specific supplications for safe travels. Muslims are encouraged to recite this Dua before undertaking any journey.

“Glory be to the One Who has subjected these for us, for we could have never done so ˹on our own˺. And surely to our Lord, we will ˹all˺ return.”

Many Hadiths describe Prophet Muhammad’s practice of making Dua during his travels to seek protection from unforeseen difficulties, emphasizing the importance of the travel Duas He taught.

Prophet Muhammad PBUH also emphasized travel etiquette, advising against traveling on specific days or dates within each month. This guidance given by Allah SWT and His prophet PBUH for safe and successful travel emphasizes the sacredness attributed to journeying in Islam.

In this section, we will discuss powerful Duas before departure, when entering a vehicle, for protection during travel, and upon reaching your destination. These essential Duas will bring blessings and safety to your journey InshAllah.

Dua Before Departure

Prophet Muhammad PBUH said:

“Whoever says (upon leaving his house): ‘ Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alAllah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah [I begin with the Name of Allah; I trust in Allah; there is no altering of conditions but by the Power of Allah],’ it will be said to him: ‘ You are guided, defended and protected. ‘ The devil will go far away from him “. Riyad as-Salihin 83 .

The Dua for Departure is the first step in embarking on a journey. This Dua provides protection and blessings for our trip.

Thus, reciting the Dua Before Departure embodies physical and spiritual protection while venturing into the world.

Dua When Entering a Vehicle

Dua When Entering a Vehicle

In a lengthy Hadith, Ibn Umar narrated what the Prophet Muhammad PBUH used to recite when he mounted his camel.

Whenever the Messenger of Allah  (ﷺ) mounted his camel for setting out on a journey, he would recite: “ Allah u Akbar (Allah  is Greatest),” thrice . Then he (ﷺ) would supplicate:

“Subhanal-ladhi sakh-khara lana hadha, wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun. Allahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina hadh al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-‘amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin ‘alaina safarana hadha, watwi ‘anna bu’dahu. Allahumma Antas-Sahibu fissafari, wal-Khalifatu fil- ahli. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min wa’ta’is-safari, wa kaabatil- manzari, wa su’il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahli wal-waladi”

Translation:

“Far removed from imperfection is the One Who has made this subservient to us, for we have no power to subjugate it, and certainly to our Rubb shall we return. O Allah, we ask You during this journey of ours for righteousness, piety, and such deeds as are pleasing to You. O Allah, make easy for us this journey of ours and make the distance short for us. O Allah, You are our Companion during the journey and the Guardian of the family and the property in our absence. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of traveling, unhappiness connected with ghastly scenes, and evil turns in property and family.”

Dua for Protection During Travel

Reciting a Dua for protection during travel is highly recommended in Islam. Abu Musa Al Ashari, a companion of the Prophet narrated that:

أن رسول الله كان إذا خاف قوماً قال‏:‏ “‏ اللهم إنا نجعلك في نحورهم ، ونعوذ بك من شرورهم‏”

When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), feared mischief from a people, he would supplicate: “Allahumma inna naj’aluka fi nuhurihim, wa na’udhu bika min shururihim (O Allah! We ask You to face them, and seek Your Protection against their evil.” Riyad as-Salihin 981

It is also recommended to seek Allah SWT’s protection by saying “ Allah-o-Akbar ” (Allah SWT is greatest) and “ Astaghfirullah ” (I seek Allah SWT’s forgiveness). Furthermore, giving donations before and after the journey can bring blessings and protect against harm.

These acts of supplication and seeking Allah SWT’s protection provide comfort and remind us of our reliance on Him throughout our journey.

Dua for Parents Left Behind

When we embark on a journey, it is essential to remember our parents who are left behind. We can pray for their well-being and protection by reciting a special Dua. This Dua is mentioned in the Quran in Surah Isra Verse 24:

رَّبِّ ٱرْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِى صَغِيرًۭا

“My Lord! Be merciful to them as they raised me when I was young.” 17:24

It expresses our love and concern for our parents and requests Allah SWT’s blessings on them even when we are absent. By making this Dua, we acknowledge the importance of family and their role in our lives.

However, you should not only recite this Dua for your parents when traveling; you should recite it all the time!

Dua Upon Reaching the Destination

“‏ مَنْ نَزَلَ مَنْزِلاً ثُمَّ قَالَ أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ‏.‏ لَمْ يَضُرُّهُ شَىْءٌ حَتَّى يَرْتَحِلَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ ذَلِكَ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

When anyone lands at a place and then says:” I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of what He has created,” nothing would harm him until he marches from that stopping place. Sahih Muslim 2708a

Dua for Seeing Someone Sick or Suffering During Travel

When we encounter someone who is ill or in pain while traveling, we need to make a Dua for them. We should pray to Allah SWT Almighty for asking for their healing and comfort during this challenging time.

Prophet Muhammad PBUH has informed us about a Dua to recite seven times while visiting a sick person. It is rather short, and requires less than a minute to complete.

“He who visits a sick person who is not on the point of death and supplicates seven times: As’alullahal-‘Azima Rabbal-‘Arshil-‘Azimi, an yashfiyaka (I beseech Allah the Great, the Rubb of the Great Throne, to heal you), Allah will certainly heal him from that sickness.” Riyad as-Salihin 906

This Dua not only expresses our compassion and empathy for others, but it also seeks Allah SWT’s blessings to alleviate their pain and suffering. We are expressing our concern for their well-being and requesting divine intervention in their recovery by making this Dua.

As a result, it is critical to remember this special prayer whenever you encounter someone who is ill or in pain while traveling.

Dua Upon Safe Return Home

After a long, tiring, and sometimes difficult journey, expressing gratitude and seeking protection upon safely arriving home is important. Offering a Dua upon safe return is an opportunity to thank Allah SWT for His blessings and seek forgiveness for any mistakes made along the way.

According to a hadith, when Prophet Muhammad PBUH used to return from a journey, he would say:

‏آيبون، تائبون ، عابدون ، لربنا حامدون‏”‏ “

“ Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna, li-Rabbina hamidun ”

(We are returning in safety, turning to our Rubb, worshipping Him and praising Him).” Riyad as-Salihin 987

This Dua serves as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging Allah SWT’s guidance and recognizing His role in ensuring our safety as we travel. By offering this prayer, we express our gratitude for our successful journey completion and our trust in Allah SWT for future endeavors.

Reciting this Dua also allows us to reflect on our experiences, spiritually growing and appreciating the blessings of being home with our loved ones.

Moreover, Prophet Muhammad PBUH has told us in a hadith that the Dua of a traveler is always accepted :

“‏ ثَلاَثُ دَعَوَاتٍ مُسْتَجَابَاتٌ لاَ شَكَّ فِيهِنَّ دَعْوَةُ الْمَظْلُومِ وَدَعْوَةُ الْمُسَافِرِ وَدَعْوَةُ الْوَالِدِ عَلَى وَلَدِهِ ‏”

Another Dua

Abdullah ibn Sarjis (RA) reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went on journey he would say:

Transliteration: Allāhumma Anta-s-Sāhibu fi-s-safar, wa-l-Khalīfatu fi-l-ahl. Allāhumma innī a’ūdhu bika min wa‘thā’i-s-safar, wa ka’ābati-l-munqalab, wa mina-l-hawri ba’da-l-kawn, wa min da’wati-l-mazlūm, wa min sū’i-l-manẓari fī-l-ahli wa-l-māl.

Meaning: O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Deputy among the family. O Allah I seek Your protection from difficulties on the journey, sadness on returning, infidelity after faith, beseeching You as an oppressed person, and from evil befalling my wealth or family.

Dua While Travelling

Stopping or lodging somewhere.

Khawlah binte Hakim As-Sulaimiyyah (RA) reported that The Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever enters at a place, and then says the following dua, nothing would harm him until he makes his leave from that place.

Transliteration: A’uzu bikalimatillahit-tammati min syarri ma khalaq

Meaning: I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what is created.

[Sahih Muslim, Riyad As Salihin]

Umar ibn al-Khattab reported that when the Prophet of Allah ﷺ was travelling, as night was approaching he would say:

Meaning: O Earth, my Lord and yours is Allah. I seek protection in Allah from your evil and the evil that is in you, and the evil that has been created in you, and the evil of that which crawls on you. I seek protection in Allah from lions, black things, snakes, scorpions, and the inhabitants of the land, parents and offspring alike.

[Sunan Abu Dawud, Sunan An Nasai]

Dua When Experiencing Difficulties During Travel

During the journey time, you may face different kinds of difficulties. In those cases, it’s recommended to seek Allah’s forgiveness by saying ‘Istigfar’ (Astaghfirullah). You can also do other Dhikr, even pray Salah, and make sincere Dua to Allah to seek Allah’s mercy.

Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) reported that Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever increases his prayers for forgiveness (i.e. Astaghfirullah), Allah will grant him relief from every worry, a way out from every hardship, and provide for him in ways he does not expect.” [Musnad Ahmad]

Allah’s Messenger ﷺ mentions the significance of making dua during travelling in the following hadith,

“Three supplications are answered without a doubt: The supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveler, and the supplication of the parent for his child.” [Jami At-Tirmidhi]

Prayer of the Traveler as Dawn Approaches

Transliteration: Sami’a saami’un bihamdillaahi wa husni balaa’ihi ‘alaynaa. Rabbanaa saahibnaa, wa ‘afdhil ‘alaynaa ‘aa’ithan billaahi minan-naar.

Meaning: He Who listens has heard that we praise Allah for the good things He gives us. Our Lord, be with us and bestow Your favor upon us. I seek the protection of Allah from the Fire.

Dua Upon Reaching Destination

Dua when approaching a town or village.

Suhayb (RA) that the Prophet ﷺ did not enter or see any village without saying the following dua

Transliteration: Rabbi anzilnī munzalān mubārakān wa anta khayru-l-munzilīn.

Meaning: O Allah, let me disembark with a blessed disembarking, and You are the best of those who cause to disembark.

[Al-Quran, Sura Al-Mu’minun, 23: 29]

Supplication Before Entering Your Place

Suhaib (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ would say upon looking at the place (town/village) he wishes to enter:

Transliteration: Allahumma rabbas samawatis sab’i wa ma azlalna, wa rabbal ardinas sab’i wa ma aqlalna, wa rabbash-shayatini wa ma adlalna, wa rabbar riyahi wa ma zaraina, as’aluka khaira hadzihil qaryah wa khaira ahliha, wa khaira ma fiha, wa a’udzubika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha, wa sharri ma fiha.

Meaning: O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all that they envelope, Lord of the seven earths and all that they carry, Lord of the devils and all whom they misguide, Lord of the winds and all whom they whisk away. I ask You for the goodness of this village, the goodness of its inhabitants, and for all the goodness found within it, and I take refuge with You from the evil of this village, the evil of its inhabitants, and from all the evil found within it.

[Mustadrak Al-Hakim]

Supplication Upon Returning Home

Transliteration: Ayibun, ta’ibun, ‘abidun, liRabbina hamidun

Meaning: We return, in repentant, worshipping, and praising our Lord

Dhikr of Return from Travel

When the Prophet ﷺ returned from a battle or Hajj, he used to say three times:

Then he ﷺ said,

Transliteration: La ila-ha illallah-hu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu, wahua ‘ala kulli shai’in qadir, a-ibuna, ta-ibuna, ‘a-biduna, li rabbina ha-midoon. Sadaqballa-hu wa’dahu, wa nasara ‘abdahu wa hazamal ahzaba wahdahu

Meaning: There is no God except Allah alone, He has no partner; His is the kingdom, all the praise; And He has power over all things. We are returners, penitents, worshipers and praisers of our Lord. Allah has fulfilled His promise, He has helped His servants, and He alone has defeated all the opposing factions.

[Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim]

Prayer Upon Returning Home

After returning home, it’s Sunnah to pray two raka’h Salah.

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’h and this will safeguard you against evil. When you enter your home, perform another two raka’h and this will safeguard you against evil.” [Musnad Al-Bazzar]

Travelling is a necessary part of life. As Muslims, we should follow the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ during Safar. You may be confused to see lots of dua in the list. Actually, Allah’s Messenger ﷺ used to say different dua during travelling. But you can start with some basic ones. And try to memorize and practice more duas as much as you can. May Allah makes our journeys safer, Ameen.

In addition to being required to pray three times daily (normally five, but exceptions are made when traveling), Allah also requires Muslims to begin other prayers, or duas, to keep them safe as soon as they leave their cities or towns and begin their travels. Whether before or during their travels—and whether by airplane, car, boat or other transportation—Muslims ask Allah to protect them on their journeys and get them back home safely to their families.

Invocation for Traveling

Allaahu 'Akbar, Allaahu 'Akbar, Allaahu 'Akbar, Subhaanal-lathee sakhkhara lanaa haathaa wa maa kunnaa lahu muqrineen. Wa 'innaa 'ilaa Rabbinaa lamunqaliboon. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never have had it by our efforts. Surely, unto our Lord we are returning. O Allah, we ask You on this our journey for goodness and piety, and for works that are pleasing to You. O Allah, lighten this journey for us and make its distance easy for us. O Allah, You are our Companion on the road and the One in Whose care we leave our family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from this journey's hardships, and from the wicked sights in store and from finding our family and property in misfortune upon returning.

Prayer for the Trip

In this Sept. 14, 1984 file photo, a crowd of Cubs fans wait to get into the Wrigley Field bleachers before a game against the Mets.

Charles Knoblock/AP

Trip back in time to 1984 reveals plenty of great memories, but ultimate heartbreak, for Cubs fans

‘‘the good lord wants the cubs to win,’’ harry caray assured wgn viewers. but apparently, the good lord was a southern californian..

The front page of the Sun-Times painted a magnificent picture after Game 1 of the 1984 National League Championship Series at Wrigley Field, a 13-0 eruption by the good-guy Cubs against the Padres.

‘‘13-OH!’’ the headline roared. ‘‘Home, sweet homers — it’s a Cubs rout.’’

The dominant photo was of hulking starting pitcher Rick Sutcliffe with a meaty arm around the neck of left fielder Gary Matthews, a caption saying ‘‘the Sarge’’ had ‘‘acted more like a general,’’ belting two home runs and driving in four. Sutcliffe, the ‘‘Red Baron,’’ had gone deep, too, perhaps the most remembered shot of the season not counting Ryne Sandberg’s heroic pair against the Cardinals in the ‘‘Sandberg Game’’ in June.

By God, the whole thing was glorious.

Fans had poured out of bars and into the Wrigleyville streets when the Cubs clinched the NL East title in Pittsburgh, ensuring postseason baseball on the North Side for the first time since 1945. A thick pull-out section in the paper celebrated that moment on its front with ‘‘After 39 Years’’ in blue type and a giant ‘‘CHAMPS!’’ in red. The Picasso sculpture in Daley Center Plaza was festooned in Cubs colors. The lions out front of the Art Institute wore the world’s biggest Cubs hats.

The 96-win Cubs had won the East by 6½ games. The 104-win Tigers, American League super-heavyweights, loomed. But at this point, no one in Chicago was doubting anymore.

At playoff time, a Washington Post story observed, ‘‘Chicago’s local media has treated everyone to an example of the kind of tough newspaper competition for which the city is famous.’’ The Sun-Times, producing a 20-page daily playoff section wrapped around the rest of the paper, was fighting a ‘‘circulation war.’’ Speaking of glorious.

In 1984, WGN announcer Harry Caray was a not-the-least-bit-subtle version of George Orwell’s Winston Smith, rebelling with loud, unabashed ‘‘thoughtcrimes’’ against the idea that the cursed Cubs couldn’t be winners.

‘‘The good Lord wants the Cubs to win,’’ Caray assured viewers along the way, no less hilarious in retrospect as it was at the time.

When they clinched, Caray bellowed, ‘‘Now our lives are complete! The Cubs are No. 1!’’

But were they? For a while; not long enough.

In Game 2, starter Steve Trout pitched into the ninth inning, getting one out before walking Kevin McReynolds with a 4-2 lead. On came Lee Smith, who struck out Carmelo Martinez before Terry Kennedy took him to the ivy in left. But Henry Cotto squeezed it.

‘‘I think every fan in Chicago about had a stroke and thought the ball was going out,’’ Hall of Famer Smith says now.

The Cubs led two games to none in a best-of-five series that was heading to San Diego for its remainder. What could go wrong? A hell of a lot, but you knew that already.

Baseball’s “it” team

Has it really been 40 years since the Cubs fought the curse and damn near beat it?

Since Sarge and the Baron, since ‘‘Ryno,’’ ‘‘Zonk,’’ ‘‘Bull,’’ ‘‘Penguin’’ and ‘‘Rainbow’’? Since the Wrigley crowd chanted, ‘‘Jody! Jody!’’ with Jody Davis at bat and Caray sang about the catcher to the tune of ‘‘The Ballad of Davy Crockett’’?

Since Van Halen’s ‘‘Jump’’ played at the intros and outros of game telecasts on Channel 9 and when the Cubs took the field for the top of the first? And since the new song ‘‘Go, Cubs, Go’’ by North Sider Steve Goodman — a fan who would die of leukemia at 36 a few days before the Cubs clinched — became a staple of WGN Radio’s pregame shows?

Since attendance at Wrigley skyrocketed from 10th out of 12 in the NL in 1982 to second at, for the first time, more than 2 million?

Since the ballpark was surrounded by such long-closed spots as Yum Yum Donuts, the Wrigleyville Tap and the Yesterday memorabilia store? Not to mention a McDonald’s and a 7-Eleven that were meeting spots before and after games for so many but now are vestiges of a distant, far-less-commercial past?

Since Springsteen’s ‘‘Born in the U.S.A.,’’ Prince’s ‘‘Purple Rain,’’ flicks ‘‘Ghostbusters’’ and ‘‘The Karate Kid’’ and Wendy’s ‘‘Where’s the beef?’’ ad?

Yep. Since all that.

‘‘The note back then was that 39 years ago, the Cubs went to a World Series,’’ recalls center fielder and leadoff man Bobby Dernier. ‘‘We thought, ‘Wow, that’s a long time ago — World War II.’ Now we’re at 40 years since then. Kind of a long time ago, too, isn’t it?’’

The Cubs were anything but favorites heading into the season. Former Sun-Times scribe Herb Gould moved over to sports from the news side that year and remembers new manager Jim Frey saying in spring training that the Cubs could be a ‘‘powerhouse’’ with good starting pitching.

‘‘I was thinking, ‘What is he talking about?’ ’’ Gould recalls with a laugh.

But the players were confident, even though there hadn’t been a winning season on the North Side since 1972 and, well, there was the whole 1945 albatross.

‘‘I know it was talked about a lot by the fans and the media at times,’’ Davis says. ‘‘But we knew we were a new team and we knew we didn’t have any control over the past, and we felt like we could play with anybody. And that’s just the way we played all summer.’’

‘‘There was just a lot of expected ‘win’ in the room,’’ Dernier says. ‘‘We had a lot of guys from other teams who had been through it before, knew what winning looked like. We had a lot of ‘Do your job,’ and when we did, we were really hard to beat.’’

The Cubs trailed the Mets by a game at the All-Star break but pulled away steadily from there. They had traded for Dernier and Matthews, among others, in the spring. They traded in June for Sutcliffe, and all he did from there was go 16-1. Sutcliffe won the Cy Young, Sandberg the MVP, first-year skipper Frey manager of the year. The Tigers were sensational, but the out-of-the-darkness Cubs were baseball’s ‘‘it’’ team.

Crowds everywhere responded.

‘‘When all of a sudden we went [to Dodger Stadium], there were more Cubs fans than there were Dodgers fans,’’ Sutcliffe says. ‘‘And that blew me away.’’

The Cubs were jumping. Chicago sports were jumping. The Blackhawks and White Sox had won division titles the year before. DePaul’s men’s basketball team spent the last three months of the 1983-84 season ranked in the top five nationally. The Bears were trending up, and the Bulls had just drafted some dude from North Carolina.

‘‘We felt like we turned Chicago sports around a little bit,’’ Davis says. ‘‘We got into the playoffs there in ’84. Then the Bears won the Super Bowl the next year. And then, oh, yeah, there’s a guy named Michael Jordan that came to town about then, too.’’

Such great times.

One, two, three

The 1984 Cubs believed they had as much business winning the World Series as anybody, and why not? They scored the most runs in the NL. They had six players in the lineup with 80 or more RBI. They had Sutcliffe and three other good starters and some towering throwers in the bullpen who, along with the Baron, could’ve formed an intimidating offensive line. They had killer nicknames and charming theme songs and enough great mojo to last a decade.

The love affair with the fans really was something. Dernier still thinks often about a conversation with Caray in Montreal at — where else? — the hotel bar that opened his eyes to how good he suddenly had it.

‘‘I was going through a rough stretch at the plate,’’ Dernier says, ‘‘but Harry waved me over and said: ‘I gotta tell you something. Even when you stink, you look like you’re trying. You’ll never get booed at home, don’t you worry about that. They’ll be behind you all the way.’ I was a little stunned by the compliment — Harry was such a significant part of that whole scene — but he was right.’’

When the Cubs arrived in San Diego, it didn’t occur to any of them that it might not be on to the Tigers from there.

‘‘We just crushed them the first two games at Wrigley,’’ Davis says, ‘‘and then we go to San Diego and have to win one out of three? We didn’t believe that anybody could beat us three straight anywhere.’’

Yeah, well, you know.

The Padres, in the playoffs for the first time, won 7-1 in Game 3, with Ed Whitson outpitching Dennis Eckersley. Just like that, they had momentum. And with nearly 60,000 in the seats at raucous Jack Murphy Stadium, they had a stinkin’ song of their own — ‘‘Cub-Busters,’’ to the tune of the ‘‘Ghostbusters’’ theme — blasting through the public-address system. It was a series now.

In Game 4, Frey chose not to come back with Sutcliffe, a controversial decision that wouldn’t pay off. The Padres won 7-5 on a walk-off homer by Steve Garvey, who rounded the bases with his right fist in the air, making Cubs fans sick to their stomachs.

But in Game 5, Leon ‘‘Bull’’ Durham hit a two-run homer in the first and Davis followed with a solo shot in the second for a 3-0 lead with Sutcliffe on the mound. Things looked so very promising. Cursed? Forget that baloney. These were our guys, the good guys. Please, just don’t blow it . . .

A ground ball by Tim Flannery went through Durham’s legs. A smash by Tony Gwynn caromed off Sandberg’s glove. Goose Gossage shut the Cubs down late to send the wrong team to the World Series. That about sums it up.

‘‘I don’t take anything away from the way the Padres played,’’ Smith says. ‘‘I just knew we had a better ballclub.’’

It Turns Out the ‘Deep State’ Is Actually Kind of Awesome

Supported by

Video by Adam Westbrook and Lindsay Crouse

As America closes in on a major election, mistrust is brewing around the mysterious government entity that’s now denounced in scary-sounding terms — “the deep state” and “the swamp.” What do those words even mean? Who exactly do they describe?

We went on a road trip to find out. As we met the Americans who are being dismissed as public enemies, we discovered that they are … us. They like Taylor Swift. They dance bachata. They go to bed at night watching “Star Trek” reruns. They go to work and do their jobs: saving us from Armageddon.

Sure, our tax dollars pay them, but as you’ll see in the video above, what a return on our investment we get!

When we hear “deep state,” instead of recoiling, we should rally. We should think about the workers otherwise known as our public servants, the everyday superheroes who wake up ready to dedicate their careers and their lives to serving us. These are the Americans we employ. Even though their work is often invisible, it makes our lives better.

But if Donald Trump is re-elected and enacts Schedule F, that could change . He would have the power to eviscerate the so-called deep state and replace our public servants with people who work for him, not us.

In the video above, you’ll meet a few of our hard-working American public servants, and we hope you’ll agree that they’re not scary at all. In fact, they’re kind of awesome.

Boeing's CEO is leaving: What does that mean for the plane manufacturer?

safe trip dua

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun is set to step down by the end of the year, and he’s not the only one. Other top executives are also leaving the company as questions of safety mar its reputation following the January incident when an Alaska Airlines 737 Max lost a door plug mid-flight.

Experts said that travelers first need to know that Boeing planes largely remain safe , but only time will tell if the company’s C-suite shakeup results in real, positive change.

“It’s a headline change. I’m not sure it makes a difference on the factory floor, and that’s really where the value or the damage is created,” Robert W. Mann, Jr., a former airline executive officer and current president of R. W. Mann and Company, an independent airline consultancy, told USA TODAY. “It’s changing the motivation structure, which has favored rate of production over absolute quality. At the same time, they’re pushing to increase production rates. They have to demonstrate they can produce quality before they can think about producing at higher rates. If this change contributes to that, wonderful; if it doesn’t, they are where they are, and they’re going to be there for a long time.”

But that kind of culture change can be hard to implement in a company as sprawling as Boeing.

“A new CEO will feel vulnerable. They will want to show that they can implement quick fixes, they’ll want to show immediate results. The problem is not going to be fixed by quick fixes,” said Ashley Fulmer, an assistant professor of management at the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. Fulmer’s research focuses on trust in business, and she said Boeing’s new CEO will have a long way to go to restore the company’s reputation.

"The issue for the public, especially, is that it’s kind of a show for accountability, but the question now we’re asking is who is really responsible?” Fulmer said. “We need to see more tangible evidence of accountability.”

For Robert Clifford, senior partner at Clifford Law in Chicago, these changes at Boeing couldn’t happen soon enough.

Clifford represents the families of victims of the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max 8 crashes in their litigation against Boeing. He said he and his clients are gratified to see executives held accountable, but that more changes are needed at the manufacturer.

“The families from the Max 8 disasters have been calling for a cleaning of the house of the C-suite for some time. It’s finally coming, it’s here,” he said. “This is not a day to rejoice; this is a day for a reckoning of what should have occurred long ago.”

Experts agreed Boeing needs to return to its roots as an engineering-first company that prioritizes the quality of its products over shareholder returns.

“You can be a good company without having just focus on the bottom line, they’re not mutually exclusive concepts,” Clifford said.

Mann added that Stephanie Pope’s appointment to lead Boeing’s Commercial Airplane division is curious and likely to come under increased scrutiny since she does not have an engineering background.

“If there’s a consistent complaint at this point, whether it’s commercial or space or any other aspect of (Boeing’s) business it’s that they don’t have the engineering people to oversee (production),” he said. “It’ll be a long time before anything really changes.”

Cruising Altitude: I've covered Boeing's 737 MAX for years. A quick rundown of the issues

The leadership change comes as a Department of Justice criminal investigation into Boeing is seemingly expanding. Passengers on the Alaska Airlines flight reportedly received letters from the FBI last week alerting them that they may be victims of a crime.

Clifford said he’s seen copies of the letter and said it contained few details about the exact nature or scope of the investigation, but that it was still an encouraging sign the government is taking Boeing’s issues seriously.

“In product liability litigation circles, there’s this concept of graveyard engineering, that products get safer but only after people die,” he said. “Now we have these passengers of the two Max 8 crashes perished needlessly so, but now other people are getting recognized as potential victims. That’s one of the consequences that is a positive.

Mann emphasized that even as Boeing remains under intense scrutiny and upheaval at the top, travelers should be assured that its planes are safe to fly on.

“I personally have the view that there are professionals there that want to do the right thing, that’s what keeps the industry as safe as it has become,” he said. “I have faith in airplanes and faith in the people operating them.”

Clifford, who represents Boeing crash victims, agreed that its planes are safe but hopes the latest incidents create further incentive to improve the quality and oversight of its production lines.

“The Max 8 right now might be the safest plane in the sky because of the preventable deaths that occurred,” he said. “There will be a renewed focus, hopefully, on quality engineering at Boeing.”

As aviation industry becomes butt of jokes, officials stress flying is safe

Aviation safety is under the microscope after revelations of problems at boeing. but while the company faces serious challenges, experts say it’s still safe to get on a plane..

The nation’s top aviation safety officials sought to reassure travelers this past week that flying in the United States remains incredibly safe, despite a series of high-profile mishaps and an ongoing probe at Boeing that have spooked the public and turned airlines into fodder for late-night comedians and social media meme pages.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stressed at a conference hosted by news site Axios that flying was the safest way to travel. Michael Whitaker, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration, repeated that message on NBC’s “Nightly News .” And in a post on X , Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, compared the airlines’ safety record against the 118 people who die on average each day in car crashes.

But their voices have to compete with the likes of comedian Jimmy Fallon, who targeted Boeing in a limerick on his show this month : “Spring break the students were going — excited, they all were a-glowin’. Then they let out a squeal, lost the door and the wheel, guess they shouldn’t have flown on a Boeing.”

The dueling messages reflect the complexity of understanding the current moment in aviation safety , which requires untangling several seemingly contradictory threads, experts say. January’s midair blowout on an Alaska Airlines flight was dangerous and could have led to people being killed, but the U.S. airline system has gone 15 years without a fatal crash. Subsequent investigations turned up serious quality control problems in Boeing’s 737 Max factory , but the FAA says it is continuing to certify planes coming off the production line as safe. A string of other recent in-flight incidents prompted the FAA on Saturday to announce it would increase its oversight of at least one major air carrier, United Airlines — but experts say there’s no sign of a systemic problem.

The NTSB, which is leading the investigation into the Alaska incident, is responsible for investigating every aviation accident involving significant damage to an aircraft or injuries to people on board. So far this year, it has opened 10 investigations into airline flights, compared with 13 in the same period last year. Some recent incidents that have attracted attention — such as a United Airlines flights that lost a tire — did not rise to the level of requiring an NTSB investigation.

Robert Sumwalt, a former chairman of the safety board, said he sees no evidence that flying has become less safe right now. While he said it’s not acceptable for wheels to fall off planes or a jet to run over the end of a runway, the system has redundancies in place to keep people from getting hurt.

“What I believe we have is a situation where once one or two of these things happen, the media starts jumping on these things,” Sumwalt said in an email. “It’s a feeding frenzy.”

For now, the safety worries do not appear to be dampening Americans’ enthusiasm for air travel. In recent polls, respondents have said they still view flying as generally safe . And Airlines for America, a group representing major carriers, forecast that spring travel demand will be up 6 percent compared with last year, predicting that a record 167.1 million people will fly in March and April.

“We are proud of our safety record yet recognize that we cannot become complacent and must always exercise vigilance,” the group said in a statement. “We take every incident seriously and investigate — coordinating closely and working collaboratively with industry partners and government agencies.”

Nonetheless, news reports have quickly become fodder for scathing memes about Boeing and aviation safety that have recently spread across nearly every social media platform. On Instagram, large humor accounts including @funnyhoodvidz with 15.6 million followers, @thetinderblog with over 4 million followers and @moistbuddha with over 3.7 million followers have posted memes mocking Boeing and its 737 jets.

Dozens of pages have shared a post by X user Jon Drake that reads, “In my 737 era (falling apart, few loose screws, not properly maintained for several years).”

On TikTok, searches for the name Boeing surface hundreds of videos commenting on recent safety slip-ups and the death of a Boeing whistleblower .

“You couldn’t pay me to step on Boeing right now,” said one TikToker with over 1.3 million followers who goes by the handle @justinonTikTok. The video has over 270,000 views and a slew of commenters saying that they too are too scared to fly the planes. Some comments question the company’s role in the whistleblower’s death. (Authorities have said he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.)

Don Caldwell, general manager of Know Your Meme , an internet meme database, said the company has seen a significant spike in memes about Boeing and safety concerns. Some companies might respond by trying to engage online directly, but Caldwell said that doesn’t appear to be a good option for Boeing.

“The memes online now are very critical of Boeing and their practices,” Caldwell said. “They present Boeing as incompetent and their planes as dangerous.”

The online content builds on real safety issues that have continued to occur in recent weeks, and target airlines as well. On Monday, United Airlines chief executive Scott Kirby sought to reassure customers after a string of incidents involving the carrier, highlighting a planned day of extra training for pilots in May.

“Our airline has experienced a number of incidents that are reminders of the importance of safety,” Kirby wrote in a letter to passengers. The letter did not identify specific incidents, but in addition to the plane losing a tire, another United plane was found to be missing a section of paneling after landing, and another suffered an engine fire.

“While they are all unrelated, I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” Kirby wrote.

On Friday, United said the FAA would conduct extra oversight of the airline. “They agree that we need to take an even closer look at multiple areas of our operation to ensure we are doing all we can to promote and drive safety compliance,” the company said in a memo to staffers.

The FAA said Saturday that it was “increasing oversight of United Airlines to ensure that it is complying with safety regulations; identifying hazards and mitigating risk; and effectively managing safety.”

FAA regulators identified quality-control problems at the factory outside Seattle where Boeing assembles its 737 Max aircraft, as well as at a major supplier’s factory in Wichita. Officials say the FAA’s efforts to hold Boeing accountable — the agency has demanded a plan to correct the problems at the Washington plant and has capped production rates — are examples of the safety system in action.

The preliminary NTSB report on the Alaska incident found the panel that flew off the plane had been removed in Boeing’s factory and seemingly reinstalled without bolts supposed to hold it in place. Boeing has said it has been unable to find documentation connected to the work.

Among the audit findings related to the supplier, Spirit AeroSystems, were examples of workers using Dawn soap and hotel key cards to carry out jobs in the factory — a seemingly jarring intrusion of everyday items into a sophisticated manufacturing plant. But Joe Buccino, a Spirit spokesman, said both were suitable for the tasks and that the audit findings related to how their use had been documented.

Buccino said that in all the audit had found seven areas where the company failed to meet FAA standards. “We seek continual improvement across all aspects of our programs and this audit provides an azimuth and direction toward that end,” Buccino said.

Executives at Boeing have also acknowledged the findings and say they’re working to address them. Brian West, the company’s finance chief, told analysts at an investment conference last week that the solution would involve training and tackling problems like “traveled work,” where manufacturing problems have to be resolved outside of the typical sequence.

“There’s changes that need to happen. There’s no doubt about it,” West said. “...We acknowledge that we need to improve upon safety and quality and conformance.”

Whitaker said in an interview last week that the evidence from the audit and survey of Boeing’s safety culture showed that the company had been focused more on finishing planes than on ensuring quality and safety. Redressing that balance would take a culture shift at the company, he said.

“Safety and quality has to be the bedrock of everything you do and production has to be secondary,” Whitaker said.

But, Whitaker said, had the FAA audit turned up something that posed an immediate safety risk with an aircraft, the agency “wouldn’t let it be produced.”

The FAA and the NTSB are continuing to investigate the Alaska incident and broader issues at Boeing. But Homendy, the safety board chair, stressed the continued safety of the airline industry.

“I’ve seen a lot of sensationalism around aviation lately,” Homendy said on X. “The fact is our aviation system is the safest in the world and all of us — investigators, regulators, airlines, employees, and manufacturers — are working to make sure it stays that way.”

CDC updates Covid isolation guidelines for people who test positive

A passenger wears a mask while riding a train in Washington, D.C.

People who test positive for Covid no longer need to isolate for five days , the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

The CDC’s new guidance now matches public health advice for flu and other respiratory illnesses: Stay home when you’re sick, but return to school or work once you’re feeling better and you’ve been without a fever for 24 hours.

The shift reflects sustained decreases in the most severe outcomes of Covid since the beginning of the pandemic, as well as a recognition that many people aren’t testing themselves for Covid anyway.

“Folks often don’t know what virus they have when they first get sick, so this will help them know what to do, regardless,” CDC director Dr. Mandy Cohen said during a media briefing Friday.

Over the past couple of years, weekly hospital admissions for Covid have fallen by more than 75%, and deaths have decreased by more than 90%, Cohen said.

“To put that differently, in 2021, Covid was the third leading cause of death in the United States. Last year, it was the 10th,” Dr. Brendan Jackson, head of respiratory virus response within the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said during the briefing.

Many doctors have been urging the CDC to lift isolation guidance for months, saying it did little to stop the spread of Covid.

The experiences of California and Oregon , which previously lifted their Covid isolation guidelines, proved that to be true.

“Recent data indicate that California and Oregon, where isolation guidance looks more like CDC’s updated recommendations, are not experiencing higher Covid-19 emergency department visits or hospitalizations,” Jackson said.

Changing the Covid isolation to mirror what’s recommended for flu and other respiratory illnesses makes sense to Dr. David Margolius, the public health director for the city of Cleveland.

“We’ve gotten to the point where we are suffering from flu at a higher rate than Covid,” he said. “What this guidance will do is help to reinforce that— regardless of what contagious respiratory viral infection you have — stay home when you’re sick, come back when you’re better.”

Dr. Kristin Englund, an infectious diseases expert at the Cleveland Clinic, said the new guidance would be beneficial in curbing the spread of all respiratory viruses.

“I think this is going to help us in the coming years to make sure that our numbers of influenza and RSV cases can also be cut down, not just Covid,” she said.

Latest news on Covid

  • Common Covid symptoms follow a pattern now, doctors say.
  • Covid during pregnancy can cause health issues in babies.
  • How big of a risk is coinfection with Covid and other viruses?

Still, the decision was likely to draw criticism from some clinicians who point to the fact that the U.S. logged 17,310 new Covid hospitalizations in the past week alone.

“It’s something that is likely to draw a wide array of opinions and perhaps even conflicting opinions,” said Dr. Faisal Khan, Seattle’s director of public health. “But [the CDC’s] rationale is sound in that the pandemic is now in a very different phase from where it was in 2021 or 2022 or 2023.”

Though the isolation guidelines have been wiped away, the CDC still encourages people to play it safe for five days after they are feeling better. That includes masking around vulnerable people and opening windows to improve the flow of fresh air indoors.

The majority of viral spread happens when people are the sickest. “As the days go on, less virus spreads,” Cohen said.

People at higher risk for severe Covid complications, such as the elderly, people with weak immune systems and pregnant women, may need to take additional precautions.

Dr. Katie Passaretti, chief epidemiologist at Atrium Health in Charlotte, said it was a “move in the positive direction.”

“We are continuing to edge into what the world looks like after Covid, with Covid being one of many respiratory viruses that are certain that circulate,” she said.

The new guidance is for the general public only, and does not include isolation guidelines in hospital settings, which is generally 10 days.

On Wednesday, the agency said that adults 65 and older should get a booster shot of the Covid vaccine this spring. It’s anticipated that the nation will experience an uptick in the illness later this summer.

Winter and summer waves of Covid have emerged over the past four years, with cases peaking in January and August, respectively, according to the  CDC .

Another, reformulated, shot is expected to be available and recommended this fall.

CDC’s main tips for reducing Covid spread:

  • Get the Covid vaccine whenever it is available. Cohen said that 95% of people who were hospitalized with Covid this past winter had not received the latest vaccine.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes, and wash hands frequently.
  • Increase ventilation by opening windows, using air purifiers and gathering outside when possible.
