If you’re looking for one of the best summer road trips in North America, look no further than a leisurely exploration of New York state and Canada! You’ll enjoy beautiful places, wonderful food and varied cultures and more as you go through this ~two week summer trip.

In this Canada and New York road trip guide, I’ll show you how to put the puzzle pieces together to plan your own incredible adventure.

Quick Overview

Days 1-4: Finger Lakes Days 5-6: Thousand Islands Days 7-10: Quebec City Days 11-12: Montreal Days 13-14: Prince Edward County Days 15-16: Toronto Days 17-18: Niagara Falls

You can use this itinerary as a general guide, but feel free to modify it to suit your needs. It would be easy to expand this to a three week summer road trip itinerary by adding time in Montreal and Toronto, though harder to cut it down to exactly two weeks.

If you’re pressed for time, consider starting with Day 7 by flying into Quebec City and then flying out of Syracuse or Rochester after spending a few days in the Finger Lakes. While you’d miss Thousand Islands, you’d also save yourself more than 6 hours of driving.

Of course you can always reverse the order of this Canada & New York road trip itinerary if it’s more convenient for you.

New York State + Canada Road Trip Logistics

Our family did almost exactly this itinerary, departing from our home in Columbus Ohio. It’s a loop, so you can begin pretty much anywhere. For those who live outside of the area, you’ll want to price out flights to Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse on the US side and Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City on the Canadian side.

If you’re American and planning for a summer road trip with kids, know that your children do need a passport if flying to Canada. However, if you fly in and out of New York state your children can cross the border with only a birth certificate. If your kids don’t already have passports, be sure to factor in the costs ($135 for standard/$215 for expedited processing+delivery) and lead time (6-13 weeks) required as you decide where to begin.

The other option to consider is whether you want to fly roundtrip in and out of a single airport or if it makes more sense for you to book either an open-jaw (in/out of different cities) or even two one-way tickets. Why might you want to do that? Maybe one of the destinations isn’t interesting to you, or you can get a better deal or save time by skipping a connecting drive. One example might be flying into Buffalo and out or Toronto – you won’t miss anything except an hour or two of traffic. Be sure to factor in one-way drop fees on your rental car if you do this!

Time to get into the details of our New York & Canada road trip itinerary!

4 Days in Finger Lakes, New York

The Finger Lakes region of western New York is the perfect place to disconnect from daily life and reconnect with what you really love. It has something for everyone: eleven beautiful lakes, hundreds (or even thousands) of waterfalls of all sizes, wineries, museums, historic sites, cute towns and more. Things to do in Finger Lakes

In my complete guide to Finger Lakes with kids you’ll find plenty of inspiration for your own trip, but there are a few things you have to do when you visit this area:

• Explore waterfalls – It’s hard to beat Watkins Glen , but if accessibility is important put Taughannock Falls near Ithaca on your list! Our favorite waterfall in the Finger Lakes is Letchworth State Park, which you’d want to visit as you enter the region from the west.
• Corning Museum of Glass – You’ll be blown away but the world’s largest collection of art glass, and don’t miss the excellent demonstrations and workshops to make your own glass souveniers!
• Lake life – Whether you kayak, go on a tour boat or just enjoy splashing in one of the lakes you can’t miss getting out on the water.

2 Days in Thousand Islands

You’ll make the easy 3 hour drive from Finger Lakes to Thousand Islands today, landing you on the US side of the St. Lawrence River. If you get an early start, stop at Green Lake near Syracuse or Fort Ontario in Oswego (only open select days) along the way depending on your interests.

1000 Islands is even quieter than the Finger Lakes and many of its visitors stay for the full summer in vacation homes, so its infrastructure isn’t geared as much to those planning a brief stay. But it has one can’t-miss attraction for your full day in the area: Boldt Castle . The restoration of this incredible American castle is second to none, so be sure to book a Boldt Castle and Two Nation Tour .

The boat will take you up and down the St. Lawrence River’s Millionaires Row past some of the most spectacular homes in the US and Canada before you bringing you to Heart Island, home of Boldt Castle. You’ll explore Heart Island on your own with the excellent audioguide app – I recommend bringing headphones and a splitter if you want to share, as it’s extremely informative! I recommend taking the earlier tour boat so that you have plenty of time to explore the island.

When your boat returns, cross the bridge to picture-perfect Wellesley Island where “summer” is a verb. Hit up Wellesley Hotel & Restaurant for dinner and then stroll through Thousand Islands Park as you watch the sun set.

We based ourselves in Alexandria Bay, but in retrospect I wish we had stayed in nearby Clayton. It’s cuter and has higher quality food options. The dining and atmosphere in A-Bay were somewhat disappointing.

4 Days in Quebec City

The furthest destination on this road trip is a truly special one, Quebec City. It has maintained its distinctive French-Canadian culture over the centuries and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into 17th century France rather than a modern North American city. On day 7, you’ll be spending 5-6 hours driving so you’ll arrive in the evening.

There are so many incredible activities that I’ve put together a detailed guide to help you plan your day-by-day Quebec City itinerary . Here are a few highlights to be sure you include:

You may notice that some of the suggestions on that list aren’t in Quebec City. That’s because there are so many wonderful day trips from Quebec that will show you a completely different side of the province!

2 Days in Montreal

Get an early start on day 11 to head down to Montreal, one of the coolest places in Canada (at least in my personal opinion). The drive is an easy 2.5 hours so you’ll have most of the day to explore Montreal in addition to all of day 12 and the morning of day 13 if you want it!

Spend the afternoon when you arrive strolling the city, enjoying St. Catherine Street, the Old Port and more. If you have kids with you, consider visiting the excellent Montreal Science Center – free if you’re a member of a local ASTC museum.

Evening is a perfect time to explore the cobbled streets of old Montreal, which was founded in 1642.

The next morning kick off your day with an Old Montreal walking tour – you can choose between three different options depending on which sites are most interesting to you and how much time you have. At mid-day, head to Marché Jean Talon to load up your bags with incredible breads, produce, local cheeses and more to bring to Mount Royal Park for a picnic. While you’re there you can enjoy amazing city views, take a hike or row a boat around Beaver Lake.

You can also consider taking a Montreal food & drink tour in the evening. Montreal’s food scene is amazing and brings in traditions from all around the world. There are tons of options for Montreal food tours !

For your final half-day in Montreal (Day 13 if you’re keeping track), visit the excellent Éspace Pour La Vie . It’s home to the Biodôme, Botanical Gardens and Insectarium. It’s located on the site of the former Olympic campus. Rather than leaving the site to waste, it’s been transformed into an incredible place to explore the natural world. If you have time, I’ve heard that the planetarium is well worth visiting – be sure to check the English schedule in advance, as show times are limited.

• Old Montreal “apart-hotel” – We stayed here and it was fantastic! Great location and in-unit laundry, which was important for such a long trip.

2 Days in Price Edward County

Around mid-day on Day 13, hop back in the car and keep driving south until you reach lovely rural Prince Edward County – locally referred to simply as “The County”. PEC is known for lovely beaches and high-quality agriculture.

In the town of Picton, Ontario you’ll find plenty of tasty restaurants and small shops. Don’t miss Bocado for excellent Spanish food!

For activities, spend Day 14 hopping between the beach at Sandbanks Provincial Park and the numerous wineries and cideries scattered around the County.

2 Days in Toronto

On Day 15 you’ll drive the easy 2.5 hours to Toronto, though be warned that the drive time can creep up during high traffic times.

Torontonians may be offended that I’ve only given their incredible city a day or maybe a day and a half. It’s not because I dislike the city or there aren’t enough things to do in Toronto. But the reality is that it has a big city vibe that will feel familiar to visitors who have spent time in places like New York and Chicago without some of the unique cultural aspects of Montreal and Quebec, and it’s also simply easier to access than everything else on this road trip thanks to its robust international airport.

Things to do in Toronto

Since your time in Toronto is limited, you’ll have to pick and choose how to spend your visit. I’ve put together a detailed play-by-play Toronto one day itinerary to help you maximize your experience.

If you’d rather build out your own itinerary, be sure to include some of the following in your ~day and a half in Toronto:

• Eat as much Asian food as you can – 30% of the city’s residents are Asian immigrants representing all of the continent’s nations, so you’ll find plenty of great options
• Ride up the CN Tower at sunset
• Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada
• Visit the Hockey Hall of Fame
• Enjoy the views and architecture of Casa Loma

Day 17 is the home stretch! In the morning you’ll drive from Toronto to Niagara Falls – but stay on the Canadian side. It has better views than the American side, plus plenty of unique attractions to keep you busy. Just be sure not to make these Niagara Falls mistakes during your visit. You’ll get to enjoy the best of Niagara Falls on the afternoon of Day 17 and the first half

What to Pack for a New York & Canada Road Trip

There are a few things you’ll definitely want to pack for a summer road trip in New York and Canada. We brought these and found them very helpful!

• A paper map – Some of these areas, particularly Finger Lakes, don’t have great phone service because they’re remote and mountainous. I suggest downloading maps to use offline in the Google Maps app, but also bringing this paper map as backup. You may also want to grab a Quebec driving map and an Ontario driving map though we didn’t need them.
• A cooler – This route covers about 1,000 miles so there are plenty of days when you’ll wind up driving around mealtime! We were really happy to have this adorable (and effective) cooler and these serious ice packs (2 of the XL size) with us for picnic lunches, quick hotel breakfasts and snack breaks. Everything stayed cold when we needed it to and the cooler has enough organization to consolidate paper plates, utensils, paper towels and even a bottle opener.
• Summer clothing (mostly) – We were able to get away with almost exclusively summer clothes – you can see that I wore the same two dresses many times in the photos above! In addition, we each brought one pair of jeans, one pair of hiking pants, a long sleeve t-shirt and a fleece or sweatshirt. Thankfully it’s a pretty easy trip to pack light for.

Everything you need to know before taking a road trip to Canada

Canada on July 19 said it would reopen its borders to fully vaccinated U.S. citizens beginning on Aug. 9.

It will be the first phase of a two-step reopening process.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents who have been fully vaccinated (14 days past the final dose) will be allowed to enter Canada for nonessential travel purposes beginning Aug. 9. Canada also said it intends to open its borders to citizens of other countries as of Sept. 7 if the pandemic doesn't worsen.

The government said it's using a "border testing surveillance program" at its air and land border crossings. Fully vaccinated travelers will not need to take a negative COVID-19 test upon entry unless they've been randomly selected to take one. You will, however, need to pack a negative test result in addition to your proof of vaccination. (More on that later.)

Canada might be a suitable option for Americans who haven't traveled during the pandemic. Because Canada is drivable from many parts of the U.S., it's an excellent option for people who want to get out of the country but aren't comfortable yet flying long distances.

How to enter Canada from the US

There are dozens of entry points by land into Canada from the U.S. But the most visited include the Windsor-Detroit border, Buffalo-Niagara Falls; Port Huron, Michigan; Maine; and Blaine, Washington, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics data .

When you cross into Canada from the U.S. , a border agent will ask the purpose of your trip and whether you feel well. Travelers crossing the border by land must wear a mask, bring a negative test result, use the ArriveCAN app to upload proof of vaccination and follow border crossing procedures.

What documents do you need to drive to Canada?

Driving into Canada from the U.S. is relatively simple compared to other destinations.

Travelers driving into Canada from the U.S. must have a valid I.D., such as a U.S. passport. Unlike most of the world, a passport card is also accepted on the land border . Children under 16 need only show proof of U.S. citizenship. The following forms of identification are accepted for U.S. citizens:

• U.S. Passport
• U.S. Passport card (for land and marine travel only)
• Enhanced Driver's License (for land and marine travel only)

U.S. citizens who are members of the NEXUS program show their membership card as proof of identification when arriving in Canada by air (from the U.S.) land or sea. U.S. citizens in the FAST program can use their cards when arriving by land and sea only.

U.S. permanent residents are required to carry an electronic travel authorization (eTA) only when arriving in Canada by air. Their foreign passport must be linked to a valid eTA, and they must also travel with proof of their permanent resident status to qualify for a visa exemption.

Starting Aug. 9, fully vaccinated travelers won't need to take a negative COVID-19 test upon entry to Canada unless they've been randomly selected for testing. However, the pre-travel testing mandate remains in place even for vaccinated travelers. Travelers arriving in Canada by land or air need to take a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departure. Both PCR and RT-PCR tests are accepted , but antigen tests are not.

Unvaccinated children under 12 will be allowed to enter Canada but must submit their information electronically through ArriveCAN and meet all testing requirements. Travelers need to be able to provide a paper or digital copy of their vaccination documentation in English or French, according to the Canadian government .

Use Nexus to expedite arrival

If you're a U.S. citizen who visits Canada often, you may want to consider getting Nexus so you can also enjoy expedited customs processing there. It's a program between Canada and the United States for preapproved, low-risk travelers at designated air, land and sea ports of entry.

Nexus is 50% less expensive than Global Entry ($50 per adult and free for children under 18). However, you must enroll at a center along the Canadian border. Clearing Canadian customs and immigration can take a while, so this would save you a lot of time.

And once you have Nexus, either as a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you also get Global Entry and TSA PreCheck. Nexus is available at 21 land locations when entering Canada. However, the Canada Border Services Agency implemented temporary lane closures that will remain in effect until "further notice."

Global Entry

If you want to expedite your entry back into the U.S., you can also get Global Entry. You can enroll upon arrival at various airports in a handful of states , plus Canada, Ireland, the Bahamas, Abu Dhabi, Aruba and Bermuda.

Global Entry cards are acceptable at land points of entry for expedited entry into the United States via the SENTRI and Nexus lanes. However, you can't use your Global Entry membership to enter Canada through the Nexus lanes.

Coming back to the U.S.

Travelers coming back to the U.S. from Canada by land aren't required to have a negative COVID-19 test. However, travelers flying into the U.S. from Canada must provide a negative COVID-19 test taken three days before departure.

Attitude of the driver was very bad, bus was too noisy something wrong mechanically, No information of the stops. I did frequent travel cross border and complete with Trailways was much better then Flixbus.

The bus driver drove in such an erratic way that I actually fell on the floor when he came to a screeching halt. I didn't think anyone would be driving that fast when there are so many passengers on board a large vehicle. Our seats did not recline properly. One of the handles was broken. The seat was right next to the toilet that smelt so terrible. Three passengers were not allowed to continue the journey over the border at Niagara falls and this held us up 50 minutes and hour ride was no longer there when we got to Union station Toronto. We had no Wi-Fi while we were at the customs office. I wasn't able to make other arrangements .The bus was freezing. A passenger had an outburst around 4:00 a.m. It disturbed everybody. As a result of arriving so late we had missed our ride and had to wait even longer for a bus as the trains were not running often on a Sunday morning. I would like to have my money refunded for this harrowing experience

The journey with FlixBus was quite disappointing. The driver left an old woman back at the gas station while she was in the washroom. The gas station was in the middle of nowhere while it was pitch black outside. We even informed the driver about it but he did not care to wait or check on her. The lady had none of her belongings with her as well. This was a very disappointing service. The wifi on the bus is poor too, it does not connect. Hire better bus drivers who cares for their passengers, especially when they are paying for their service.

The Ultimate 2 Weeks Road Trip from NYC Through the East Coast to Canada

I'm traveling with a friend and it's our dream to visit New England and Canada . We love small towns instead of big cities. What do you think about this itinerary: NY (2 days because we have been there twice) Newport (1 day) Provincetown - Cape Code (2 days) Portland - Coast of Main - Bar Harbour (4 days) Quebec (2 days) Montreal (2 days) and the last day we want to spend a complete day shopping so we are thinking going to Woodbury Common in Central Valley and then back to NY. Somewhere worth visiting between Montreal and Central Valley? Our travel starts and finishes in NY and we would like to rent a car. We are not visiting Boston, because we have been there. Any suggestions about the itinerary? We will be traveling on September or October. Which month do you think is better? I have heard that October is beautiful because of the color of the trees. Thanks a lot for your guidance!!!

The road trip itinerary:

Day 2 newport, day 3 newport.

Your day in Newport RI should is going to be great! The downtown area is perfect. There are shops everywhere and plenty of restaurants. For lunch, I would suggest the Black Pearl for a bowl of clam chowder (it is the absolute best), a little shopping for the afternoon, maybe some ice cream. If you want to see a beautiful sunset, I suggest the Hyatt Regency Newport on Goat Island . You don't stay there for the night, you go to the restaurant in the back and they have a sunset ceremony with champagne and a little canon every night. They have a fire pit, a little lighthouse, and the Newport Bridge is near. It will be warmer in September, but if you're looking for the leaves changing color I clearly suggest October. You will love to go and take the scenic route up through Franconia Notch where you'll pass the Presidential mountains, the spot where the Old Man Of The Mountain used to spend his days, and see all of the beautiful colors on the trees.

Day 4 Provincetown

Day 5 nantucket and portland.

Check out ice cream at The Juice Bar but go at off hours to avoid the lines. 10b, also known as Ladies Beach, is a great place to find some waves. American Seasons is delicious for dinner, and I would highly recommend it. Renting a bike is not a bad idea because Nantucket is a beautiful place to ride around!

Day 6 Portland and Bar Harbor

The real beauty in the Portland area is outside of Portland though. Two must visits: Two Lights State Park . Bear right to the park when you arrive, not left toward the lighthouse. Park and head toward the water on the right. It's simply gorgeous. And Fort Williams Park , home of the most photographed lighthouse in the world! And take a look at Freeport when you're driving up the coast of Maine . L.L.Bean mothership store is there and it's a great shopping town.

Day 7 Bar Harbor

I have stayed in several places in Bar Harbor they are...Edenbrook Motel, Acadia Inn, The Days Inn Bar Harbor/Frenchman's Bay and Isleview Motel and Cottages. In the summer there is a shuttle bus called the Island Explorer that picks up visitors at many of the motels and will take you to downtown Bar Harbor or Acadia National Park. The motels a few minutes out of Bar Harbor are cheaper but the shuttle can take you where you need to go. I'd check with the motel to see if they use the shuttle. The rides are free. Here is what Budget car rental says about driver’s license for non-Canadian and non-US citizens: Non-U.S. and non-Canadian residents are required to present a valid driver’s license and a passport from their home country. If the information on your driver’s license is not written in the Roman alphabet, you must also present an International Driving Permit. If you have indicated on your reservation that you are a non-U.S. resident, you must also present proof of your return trip back to your resident country or your confirmed reservation rate will change. 
• Certain fruits and vegetables are not allowed into Canada. To avoid delays, don’t carry fresh produce in your vehicle.

Stayed at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac. Honestly, we signed up for the Fairmont credit card and, after $2,000 spent over three months, received President's Club status. We received two free nights at any Fairmont in the world. We stayed three nights and paid for one. With our status, they upgraded us to the gold floor. Tony Bourdain was spot on with his recommendation to L'Affaire est Ketchup. Outstanding! We also had a great lunch at La Galette Libanaise. Must see would be the La Citadelle de Québec, the farmer's market, and a stroll on Rue Saint Louis out to Grande Allée. Kind of a mini Champs Elysee. They also have some decent street performers, most of which take their turn around the statue of Samuel de Champlain.

The problem would be, would you have enough time. There is so much to see in Quebec City. You cannot mist the Vieux-Québec (old city). You will have lost of choices at all ranges of $$. Leave you usual fast food chains aside. Live a little experience good food and historical landscapes. Try one of the nice restaurant in the steps going from the Vieux-Québec to the Basse-Ville (original site of the city during colonisation). Another street with lots of good choices is Rue Cartier. If you don't have a place to stay yet, try Relais Charles-Alexandre ( go on Internet for there site) on Grande-Allée E near Rue Cartier. It several transformed joined buildings into a Inn, with cackeling floors, breakfast included. Very nice ! I used to go there frequently for work. It's within walking distance of Vieux-Québec.

Day 10 Quebec City

Day 11 montreal.

Essential in Montreal: Vieux-Montreal, Mont-Royal to get the city view, Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal, Olympic Stadium, Jardin Botanique (those two are close), Saint-Laurent, St Denis St and Mont Royal Blvd (lots of restaurants, bars and stores). Two smaller hidden streets which have great restaurants: Rue Prince Arthur and Rue Duluth. Other options: Casino de Montréal, Chinatown, Place des arts, Underground City (which is basically stores).

Day 12 Montreal

Day 15 depart.

For travelers looking to head north of the border this summer in the privacy of their own car, these are nine scenic routes that we love, with tips on where to stay, eat, and more. The best part? Each of these Canada road trip itineraries has starting points in the U.S., so you can enjoy every bit of the drive.

Ontario's Niagara Horseshoe Falls

Niagara Parkway: Buffalo, New York to Toronto, Ontario

Just across the border from Buffalo, New York, lies the city of Niagara Falls , best known for being the home of the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. For those looking to extend their trip, travel along the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), which will take you from Niagara to downtown Toronto in 90 minutes (if traffic is flowing smoothly).

Where to stop:  Follow the Niagara parkway to the picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, where you'll spot preserved 19th-century colonial architecture. The Niagara region is also known for having dozens of wineries on the Niagara Wine Trail , and some are as close as 10 minutes to the border.

Where to eat:  The family-run  Ravine Vineyard Estate  has an on-site restaurant and general store-style gift shop offering a la carte selections, and pantry picnic essentials to stock up on between wine tastings.   

Where to stay:  Charming Niagara-on-the-Lake has several landmark properties like the  Harbour House Hotel and Prince of Wales Hotel . If your road trip takes you to Toronto, continue your trip back in time by staying at One King West Hotel & Residence , inside Toronto’s original Dominion Bank skyscraper, which dates back to 1914. 

Lake Louise, Banff

Icefields Parkway: Montana to Banff National Park, Alberta

The quickest way from the American border to Banff National Park in Alberta is to drive through British Columbia. From northern Montana, head north on the BC-93 highway driving through the small towns along the way. The Icefields Parkway links Lake Louise in Banff National Park to Jasper National Park , and whirls drivers through the Rocky Mountains, beside glacier-like icefields and along the Continental Divide. 

Where to stop:  On your way to Banff National Park you'll pass though several mountain towns brimming with outdoor activities, like skiing and waterfalls to visit; Cranbrook, Fernie, and Kimberly are all just off the BC-93 and worth pulling over for. Stop by the village of Radium Hot Springs , which is open to visitors year-round, for a dip in the Lussier Natural Hot Springs, or one of their thermal pools.  

Where to eat:  During your drive on the Icefields Parkway, dine beside the Columbia Ice Field at the  Glacier View Lodge . From the on-site Altitude Restaurant you’ll have spectacular dinner views of the mountains, or you can visit the more-casual Chalet for lunch fare. 

Where to stay:  Known as the “Castle in the Rockies,” the Fairmont Banff Springs was built as one of the original Canadian Pacific Railway hotels in 1886. Today, Fairmont also operates other historic properties in the region that include the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge .

Fundy Coastal Trail: Maine to Saint John, New Brunswick

Explore New Brunswick's 286-mile drive along the Bay of Fundy coastline to see the world’s highest tides up-close. Depending on the time of day, you can marvel at the tides two ways: by kayaking on the water when it's at its peak, or by walking on the sprawling ocean floor when the waves have recessed. The Bay of Fundy can be seen from Saint John to Moncton, or plan a visit to the otherworldly Hopewell Rocks , which were formed by tidal erosions and stand alone when the tide goes out.

Where to stop:  St. Andrews by the sea is the midway point between Maine and the Bay of Fundy. For a short visit, wander down the town's main strip and along its historic pier; if you have some more time, wander through the 27-acre  Kingsbrae Garden  or play 18 holes at the award-winning  Algonquin Golf Course . 

Where to eat:  Dine at the  Saint John City Market , where you'll find locally caught seafood and other seasonal goods. For a sit-down meal, stop by  Bigtide Brewing Company  for craft beer and pub fare. 

Where to stay:  In downtown Saint John, the  Delta Hotel by Marriott Saint John  is conveniently within walking distance to the city’s best attractions and its famed  reversing falls , which appear to swirl backwards into the Bay of Fundy. For the resort experience, book a night at  The Algonquin in St. Andrews  by the sea.

British Columbia's Highway 99

Sea to Sky Highway: Washington State to Whistler, British Columbia

You can drive from the edge of Washington state to the mountains in Whistler in just over two hours, cutting through vibrant Vancouver along the way. The Sea-to-Sky Highway, also known as the BC-99, connects North Vancouver to Whistler on a picturesque coastal drive where the mountain and the water meet. Where to stop: To break up your drive, stop in Squamish at the Sea to Sky Gondola to get an aerial view of the region. If time permits, enhance your visit with a free guided tour to learn about the history of the land on the Spirit Trail .  Where to eat: Head to the Nicklaus North Golf Course to try and snag a spot on the patio at Table Nineteen for scenic views of Green Lake, and the descending floatplanes flying in from Vancouver.  Where to stay: Book a few nights in Whistler to explore this bustling mountain town. Budget-travelers flock to the boutique capsule Pangea Pod Hotel , located in the center of the main strip. For a lakeside respite, the Nita Lake Lodge is a stone’s throw away in Creekside Village.

Quebec City's Old Town

Autoroute 73: Maine to Quebec City, Quebec

While several of the New England states border Québec, the capital city of Québec City is in the Eastern part of the province, closest to Maine. This Francophone city feels more like Europe than other areas of Canada, with narrow alleyways and cobblestone streets. Continue your road trip along the St. Lawrence River to scenic Baie-Saint Paul in Charlevoix for country walks, cheese shops, and the Galerie d'art Iris .  Where to stop: Mark the Montmorency Falls on your map for a quick stop just outside of Québec City, on your way to Charlevoix. The magnificent falls tower 99 feet higher than Niagara Falls and adventurous travelers can explore them by cable car, a suspended bridge , or zip-line. Where to eat: Stop by the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac for an afternoon tea at the castle, or dine onsite at Champlain Restaurant or Sam Bistro.  Where to stay: Auberge Saint-Antoine in the Old Port of Quebec City is a Relais & Châteaux that has preserved relics from the archeological dig within the property. In Baie-Saint Paul, the Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix blends a peaceful escape in a charming town with sophisticated amenities and an onsite Spa Nordique Le Germain.

The Southwest Nova Scotia Route: Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

When the  CAT ferry  that travels between Bar Harbor, Maine , and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, resumes in spring 2022, you can get from coast to coast on this high-speed catamaran in just over three hours. RVs, pickups, SUVs, cars, tour buses, motorcycles, and bicycles are welcome aboard—making this the best way for road trippers to cross the Atlantic Ocean into Canada. Once in Nova Scotia, drive along the jaw-dropping coastline along the 101 to Halifax, and back down the 103 to the ferry in Yarmouth.

Where to stop:  Plan to make several stops during your road trip, in the small coastal towns of Digby, Lunenburg, and Mahone Bay. After Halifax, head to Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse to visit one of the most recognizable sites in Canada.

Where to eat:  A trip to Nova Scotia isn’t complete with indulging in fresh seafood. Swing by one of the stalls at  Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market , or grab a lobster roll along the water’s edge in one of the small towns that you visit along the way. 

Where to stay:  Break up your drive by staying a night or two in downtown Halifax. For a touch of history, book your stay at the  Lord Nelson Hotel and Suites  by the Halifax Public Gardens. For a contemporary option, check out  Muir, Autograph Collection Hotel –slated to open in fall 2021 .

Emerald Lake, South Klondike Highway

Alaska-Canadian Highway: Alaska to Haines Junction, Yukon

The 1390-mile route along the Alaska-Canadian Highway takes you through the Pacific Northwest, from Seattle to British Columbia, and then into Alaska and the Yukon. For a shorter jaunt, take just the northern leg along the St. Elias Mountains and Kluane National Park and Reserve, traveling north from Alaska through Haines Junction. Where to stop: At the Thechàl Dhâl Visitor Centre , you can pick up hiking maps, register for backcountry camping, and learn more about Kluane National Park and Reserve. During the spring and fall, Dall Sheep can often be seen nearby. This national park is home to Canada’s highest mountain, Mt. Logan, the largest non-polar ice fields on the planet, and is part of one the largest internationally protected areas connected to Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park in British Columbia, and Glacier Bay National Park and Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park in Alaska.

Where to eat: There are several dining options in Haines Junction, but due to the secluded nature of this region you’ll want to pack a few snacks in a bear-proof container to bring on your drive. Rely on on-site dining options during your hotel stay, and healthy breakfasts and hearty family-style dinners at the Mount Logan EcoLodge .  Where to stay: The  Mount Logan EcoLodge  is a rustic escape tucked within the mountains, in a prime location for those wanting to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis during the winter months. 

Yellowhead Highway #16

Yellowhead Highway: North Dakota to Winnipeg, Manitoba

The Yellowhead Highway runs through the Canadian Prairie from Winnipeg, Manitoba, through Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Edmonton, Alberta. From the North Dakota border, drive up to Winnipeg for an overnight stay before continuing west toward  Riding Mountain National Park .

Boarding was great. The flight landed early. It took the crew over an hour and a half to bring out drinks. I paid to upgrade my seat to Comfort+ only to be near a crying/screaming baby who was seldom quiet. Noise-cancelling earbuds didn’t even help. Waste of money to upgrade.

Seats were broken in premium select and so was monitored on my seat and other people around me

Boarding was a sh!t show. JFK BOARDING was awful. The agent called three sections at a time Clogging the area then yelling at people to not block the walk way. How are you going to call delta one , premium select and comfort plus at once and the yell at highest paying passengers. Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

The main person that was coordinating everything was a short white/light skin Spanish man and he was very rude. It honestly made me feel like it was everyone’s First day at work. His announcements were very not reasonable and they did not make sense. The stewardess on the flight that made the announcements she didn’t even know what she was talking about she sounded inebriated. There were no snacks or drinks on our flight there wasn’t even much turbulence. This flight was not enjoyable nor was it what a Delta flight should be and just this past week I flew with Delta 3 times.

Horrible. First delta flight was delayed. I ran to my connecting flight and arrived to the gate 13 mins before departure. I told the gate agent “I’m here”, she told me flight was closed while giving my already confirmed seat to an stand by passenger. I said again “madam, I’m here with my confirmed seat” and she said “no you’re not here@ and gave two stand by people a boarding pass and let them board. I asked “madam, why do you do that?”, and she repeated “you’re not here”. That was very rude. I’m disappointed of delta. It used to have a good customer service. Things have changed, but not for good.

Your app is impossible to use. I couldn't load it. Then i couldn't open it. When i finally got both those things done -with much help -then i couldn't open the app to install a credit card. The upshot was 4 flights without access to food or drink. When i first tried to download united app some company called starlier opened instead and i would up signing up for some 49 dollar a month music service which i still have not been able to cancel.

I was happy to be seated with my teen daughter. On my arrival flight we were not together. Drink choices were great. Food was ok. Lots of entertainment options. Pilot communicated well and gave us a heads up about wind and turbulence. Made it less anxious.

Overall it was good. The flight was bumpy at times, but the pilot made us aware every time. As a result, no snacks/drinks were made available. Seats were tight but that’s okay as I had a window seat.

That flight was smooth, and staff we courteous. it was a full flight so very tight. The boarding through security was not properly controlled. it was rushed and the scanning process for our bags, etc. was pilling up at the other end with no time to empty our belonging my personal items almost toppled over on the floor if i hadn't caught it rapidly. Was it just that time, or always like this - cant say. other than that all else was fine.

Boarding process was well organized and orderly even though flight was fairly full. Water bottles were provided during boarding which was great as I drink a lot of water. Bathroom was not as clean as it could have been but was acceptable and fairly dry. Food however was mediocre. I have had better food on 2 hour local flights in other countries.

Delayed by 2.5 hours. This happened previously on my flight from YOW to YVR on Dec. 26.2023. This is a terrible airline. The reason was there was lack of ground crew. This is a known event. AVOID PORTER AIRLINES IF YOU CAN. There is a reason half the plane was empty.

The airline arrival at the downtown airport is a big plus.. Food and beverage was excellent. Their non weather related cancellation is horrible. Wasn’t on the flight- again. Bad weather in Halifax and I was in an accident. What a poor experience to have to pay for all this flight and not be on it

I didn’t make my flight due to poor weather and I had an accident driving there. I tried to get my money back or even credit and nothing. I have an entire flight both to Florida and back that I paid for and no one will give me any money back. I know this isn’t just Porter and it’s 3rd party- however airlines should allow these companies to take money for things they don’t get. I’m so upset. Who can afford a full flight they never take?

Flight Ottawa to Toronto canceled and no crew was available to direct me on what to do. I opened a file and I wait to be compensated.

Transfer from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 by bus is chaotic, because as per information Free Shuttle Bus was supposed to take passengers from Domestic Terminal 1 to International Terminal 3, but the bus took us from Terminal 1 to terminal 2, then to Terminal 1 ,, 2 and finally to Terminal 3

The flight crew was really wonderful, incredibly helpful as well as patient. I was able to watch entertainment on my phone but didn't have access to my headphones and I didn't want to bother the flight attendants. The food wasn't an issue for me because I am a vegan and brought my own food on board. The flight left on time and arrived ahead of schedule. It was overall a good flight.

The flight was so short that the lack of leg room didn't bother me for long. The plane was smaller so only two seats per row and there were chargers. However, they didn't serve any snacks.

Horrible trip. I won't fly AA again Boarding was a nightmare because they squeezed people into the waiting like sardines. My connection was 30 minutes and the run to the gate was horrible. Then the flight was canceled AFTER boarding. The Flight attendants did not know what to do and gave out the wrong instructions. They finally sent us to a different gate. Again, the waiting was like a sardine tin. The flight was okay and my baggage arrived fine.

My first time flying American Airlines, my first flight to CLT was wonderful and flight attendants was nice and had great customer service. My second flight from CLT to NY was very delayed due to whatever reason the crew was not greeting other than that I’m rate 8 .

I didn’t like the fact that all the customs officers went to lunch so I was in line for 90 minutes due to where the staff directed me. We were told three very different reasons for why the plane was delayed. It was a crowded plane with difficult storage situations for the Carry On bags. The Air Canada airline staff were all very good and professional. I was so disappointed in my cheese and fruit box as the cheese had molded and the fruit wasn’t fresh so I couldn’t eat the majority of the food. This was the last meal I could find as the restaurants had closed when I got in to my destination. I think you could work on improving the food quality.

There was no entertainment at our seats. The flight was comfortable and we had leg room. The snack we had was really good.

Economy seats were surprisingly comfortable, and snacks not too bad. Checked luggage arrived at destination without problems. It was annoying to wait until last to board as lowest-tier seats but understand it’s difficult to gauge when loading a full plane At least checked carryon luggage seemed to come off first. Once again my complaint is how close the seats are together. Also, the bathrooms were not very clean by the second half of the flight.

Thinking of taking your dog or cat with you the next time you fly? For a growing percentage of the 90.5 million pet owners in the U.S., the answer is yes. But while the notion of boarding a plane with your pet may seem simple, the rules and restrictions around traveling with an animal can be confusing. 

Eight major U.S. airlines allow pets to fly in-cabin as carry-ons. But flying with your pet takes research and planning, as pet policies vary from airline to airline, are steeped in restrictions, and are limited to specific countries and cities. You'll also have to pay an extra fee for your pet ranging from $95 to $200, depending on the airline and where you're flying. And restrictions often change.

For example, American Airlines  recently revised its policies  so passengers flying with pets may also bring one full-size carry-on or personal item. But the carrier prohibits carry-on pets on transatlantic and transpacific flights. Here's what you need to know when considering taking your fur baby with you on a plane.

Cargo, check-in or carry-on?

Most airlines offer three options for transporting animals: cargo, check-in or carry-on. But if your pet is larger than a bread box, your options are limited to the cargo or baggage check-in options, with very few exceptions. 

Given that large canine breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are among the most popular dogs in the country, the size restriction for in-cabin pet travel can be a major frustration for those who would rather not fly at all if that means putting their pet in cargo. 

A 2023 Forbes Adviser survey of 10,000 U.S. dog owners found that 33% of respondents fly with their pets, while 37% listed not being able to bring their dog on a plane as their biggest annoyance. Carry-on pets

Even for pet owners whose animals are small enough to fly as a carry-on, traveling is no breeze.

"When I fly with him I have to go to the desk," Margaret Rauch, 44, told CBS MoneyWatch, referring to her 15-pound poodle mix, Soda. The New York City resident has taken Soda on dozens of flights to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Soda, now 4, was being fostered by a friend after being found as a stray puppy in 2021. 

In addition to calling the airline in advance to register her dog for a flight, Rauch has to check in at the counter whenever she's traveling with Soda, so the airline agent can confirm her dog and pet carrier conform to the in-cabin pet requirements and that the flight hasn't already met its pet maximum. 

Rauch, who said she would never consider putting Soda in cargo, applauded American Airlines' new policy, while noting that in her experience the one carry-on rule was rarely enforced. 

"I feel the price is already high for what I get. Even with AA's rule change, I lose the underseat space," she said. "My dog creates no extra work for anyone."

Despite the added preparation, paperwork and hassle involved in flying with Soda — not to mention the unfriendly looks she occasionally detects from fellow passengers at the sight of her pet carrier — Rauch said, "It's absolutely worth it." 

Asked how the experience could be improved, she pointed to early boarding for pet owners as something that would help.

"If you can get in early, get a seat and settle down, that is an accommodation I don't expect to see anytime soon but I think it makes sense," Rauch said.

Safety and comfort

For the many Americans who see their pets practically as family members, one of the most challenging aspects of flying is ensuring their animal's comfort and safety. 

"The increasing humanization of pets, which involves treating them as part of the family rather than as mere animals, has increased the demand for pet travel services that are of high quality and can be customized to meet the specific needs of each pet," LinkedIn reported in December.

Among other tips, the U.S. Department of Transportation  and animal experts recommend that you not feed your pet four to six hours before a flight and limit their water intake. Others also suggest keeping bottled water on hand at all times. Additionally, most airlines require certain vaccination and vet certification that your pet is healthy enough to fly. Individual countries also have their own requirements for pets to enter.  

Not surprisingly, some airlines do better than others at handling pets. One of the best-rated carriers for pet travel is Alaska Airlines, which has repeatedly topped rankings, such as NerdWallet's Most pet-friendly airlines of 2024.  In recent years, the airline also has maintained one of the industry's lowest incident ratings, according to Veterinarians.org. United Airlines and Delta are among the airlines with the highest incident rates, according to the pet information website. 

On Rauch's first plane trip with Soda traveling home to New York, a layover in Miami led to the flight sitting on the tarmac for two hours. Calming treats are something that helps keeps her dog relaxed on flights. She also withholds Soda's food and limits his water intake up to five hours before a flight, which is also helpful given that he doesn't like using pet relief areas, which she said generally smell of urine and can be overwhelming for dogs. Flights between New York City and St. Croix are generally under six hours. 

"I'm not sure how I'd handle a flight to Singapore," Rauch said.

Alaska Airlines

Pet fee: $100

Pets allowed: Dogs and cats are the only pets allowed in-cabin on international trips and flights to Hawaii. Domesticated rabbits and small household birds are allowed as carry-on on domestic flights.

Destinations: Domestic and international, with additional requirements and documentation required for  pets traveling to Hawaii  or  internationally .
