Volunteer Abroad with MEDLIFE in 2024

Join a Service Learning Trip and help us bring medicine, education, and development to low-income communities in South America & Africa.

The MEDLIFE Difference

Our mission is to build a worldwide Movement empowering the poor in their fight for equal access to healthcare, education, and a safe home. To achieve our mission, we take a different approach to social justice work: listening, collaborating, prioritizing sustainability, and always following-up.

listening to communities, MEDLIFE approach, global health

START BY LISTENING

We start by listening. Our priorities are driven by the communities we partner with. Rather than telling someone what they need, we hear their concerns and struggles, and come up with a solution together.

global challenges

HAND IN HAND

Our dual approach empowers volunteers and low-income communities to cultivate change by working together. Everything we do is supported 50% by MEDLIFE, and 50% by the community.

sustainable action, medlife chapters, student chapters

SUSTAINABLE ACTION

To contribute to solutions in a world of challenges, we focus on sustainable community development. We work alongside local professionals and leaders, building long-term partnerships.

patient care, global health, patient follow-up

24/7 PATIENT CARE

Our local healthcare professionals, including nurses and doctors, provide 24/7/365 quality patient care to those we meet during Mobile Clinics. They prioritize the well-being and health of each individual served.

MEDLIFE Chapters

MEDLIFE Chapters are student groups, led by passionate faculty or students, that represent and promote MEDLIFE at their schools and in their local communities. They make an immeasurable impact – fundraising for MEDLIFE, volunteering in Service Learning Trips, engaging in local community service initiatives, and more. Involved students develop leadership skills, have the opportunity to make a difference, and build important relationships that last a lifetime.

Hear from Those Who've Made a Difference

As an aspiring physician, MEDLIFE motivated me to further continue my goal of becoming a doctor. In fact, I enjoyed the Tanzania Service Learning Trip so much that I decided to go on another trip to Cusco, Peru.

I loved learning about the patients MEDLIFE has followed and how they offer real help to people with chronic/urgent conditions. It is amazing how the organization formed real connections with the communities.

Being involved with MEDLIFE is not like joining another club - its bigger than that. It is about joining a movement that seeks to help change people’s quality of life for forever.

This trip made everything that I was learning in my public health courses come to life and immersed me in a new culture while also learning about medicine.

It was most enjoyable to finish the hard work and see how big a difference a group of individuals can make. It was such an amazing experience.

This trip motivated me more to pursue a career in the healthcare field so that I can use my resources to help those who need it the most, similar to MEDLIFE’s mission.

I enjoyed the mobile clinics the most, especially the dental and triage portions. I would definitely recommend a MEDLIFE trip, it was a great experience.

One thing that I really loved about this trip was that MEDLIFE made sure that the volunteers got an understanding of the complexity of issues that lead to underprivileged people in communities outside of the main city

Not only was I able to participate in a week long Mobile Clinic, shadowing doctors of all types of specialties including pharmacy, dentistry, gynecology, and more, but I was also able to learn about the culture and visit incredible places.

WHY Volunteer ABROAD in LIMA, peru?

volunteer programs in peru

MEDLIFE’s work in Lima focuses on the human settlements or “pueblos jovenes” on the outskirts of Lima, where almost 1 million people live in impoverished conditions. These communities consist of small shacks, often made of reed mats or plywood, and built into the precarious rocky hillsides around Lima. These communities lack access to essential services like running water and electricity. While COVID-19 badly hit the entire city , these communities were affected severely. With most of the population living hand-to-mouth on wages from informal jobs, the pandemic brought months of financial hardship and food insecurity. Our COVID-19 relief effort helped ensure families didn’t go hungry, but further support is needed to get communities back on their feet.

Highlights of MEDLIFE Lima:

  • Explore various inspiring and impactful service learning trip options available year-round, including classic, nursing, dental, high school, physician assistants, engineering & architecture, and more!
  • Airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals (mon-fri), and 24/7 in-country support.
  • Free medical insurance is included.
  • Comfortable dormitory-style rooms during your stay.

some hotels could have been better

It was jam packed with every place I wanted to go and see. I especially love my photo of us setting out on the night time river cruise in St Petersburg and the Peter...

I really did not buy much and what I did buy was small gifts for others .

Good hotels, some better than others. Interesting itinerary

Too rushed. Optional tour rather too short

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

medlife trips 2022

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead

It is the heart of the country’s capital and was once the site of the Imperial Palace of Russia. Inside the thick palace walls lies the magnificent architectural complex that was once the palace of the Tsars, as well as the Cathedral of the Archangel where the remains of many past Tsars rest, where members of the royal family were married and baptized and which was the site of each Tsar’s coronation ceremony. Dormition Cathedral is home to the ancient clock tower of Ivan the Terrible, the State Armory, as well as the Presidential Palace and the Grand Auditorium built in the Soviet era.

As a standout amongst the most famous and socially arranged places in all of Russia, the State Historical Museum in Moscow is a scene that inhales the Russian soul into every one of it's guests. Established in 1872, the exhibition hall is situated between the celebrated around the world Red and Manege Squares of the city. The presentations in the scene go from inestimable works of art to relics from ancient clans that possessed Russia and number in the millions. The exhibition hall's attention on local and social history and articulation gives you a genuine vibe of the city and country, making the State Historic Museum a really Russian affair.

Trip.com User: Very impressive building located in the city center, next to the Red Square and Kremlin, with a monument of famous Russian officer, Marshal Zhukov in front. Inside you can see an exhibition of most important artifacts from rich Russian history ranging from prehistoric to modern times.

Trip.com User: Very people from different tourists around the world will come to the museum! It displays a variety of exhibits, murals, etc. It can take several hours to enjoy the visit slowly, but it is worth it.

Day 2 | Afternoon

Now we come to another great highlight in the city: Novodevichy Cemetery.

Novodevichy Cemetery

Opening Hours: Open from 7:00am-7:00pm

Ticket Price: 300 RUB

Recommended Length of Stay: 1-2 Hours

Location: Luzhnetskiy Proyezd, 2, Moscow, Russia, 119048

Since 1923, the Nova Virgin Cemetery has been a cemetery of celebrities. More than 26,000 celebrities of various Russian historical periods are buried here. Writers Gogol, Chekhov, Fadeev and Ostrovsky, painter Isaac Levitan, film actor Shukshin, ballet artist Ulanova, famous politician Khrushchev, Mikoyan, Gromyko, the wife of Brezhnov, the world's first astronaut Gagarin, military strategists, artists and scientists are buried here, and almost every tombstone is a piece of sculpture. Visiting Celebrity Mausoleums These great men who once played a huge role in promoting the development of Russian history tell the world their different life stories through their unique tombstones. Khrushchev's tombstone is composed of three black and white marbles intersecting each other, with a stone head in the middle; the image of the heroine Zoya's tombstone is very touching: her hands are tied behind her back, her clothes are broken, her bare chest is erect, and her double Legs slightly bent, head held high back. Wang Ming's tomb is also here, a bust statue wearing a Chinese tunic suit, looking straight ahead. The tombstone of the famous ballet dancer Ulanova is a piece of pure white marble. Her graceful dance will always be left on the inscription like a curtain, so that the world cannot forget it. The founder of the circus, Yuri Nikulin, sits in a pine forest and looks at his faithful friend lying in front of him, the wise dog, who is said to have died on the same day as his dog, this is the soul The result of blending is more sincere and moving than human emotions. These various shapes express the identity and characteristics of the deceased. Feel the Russian cemetery culture In the hearts of Russians, the New Virgin Cemetery is not a place to bid farewell to life, but a sacred place to reinterpret life and purify the soul. The New Virgen Cemetery is full of strong cultural charm. The art of the tomb owner's soul and the tombstone are skillfully combined to form a unique Russian cemetery culture. The New Virgin Cemetery displays the entire history of Russia, each tombstone seems to be a page in history, and the sculptures in the cemetery have their own characteristics, which is the epitome of the development of the entire Russian sculpture art. Next to the Novo Virgin Cemetery is the Novo Virgin Monastery, including the Smolensk Church built in 1524. This church has 5 domes and is golden in the sun, which contrasts with the monastery's brown walls and lush ancient wood. .

The armory here dates back to 1511, when it was established by Vasily III for the manufacture and storage of weapons and later for the production of handicrafts. During Peter's reign, all silversmiths, blacksmiths and craftsmen were sent to St. Petersburg, and the armory gradually became a museum of royal treasures. The collections here are dazzling, such as the diamond-studded crowns, scepters and thrones of the tsars of the Russian Empire, as well as gold and silver utensils donated by governments or made in their own countries. Even military armor, shields, and muskets are beautifully engraved with ornaments that are more appropriately called works of art rather than weapons. Speaking of interesting collections, it's the Royal Easter Eggs. Until the early 1920s, the Armory Museum kept 24 Royal Easter eggs, but for various reasons, only 10 remain today. Angelina Jolie Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie ‘s legal team alleges in a new court filing that Brad Pitt ‘s alleged physical abuse started before an alleged altercation took place between Pitt, Jolie and their children on a plane in September 2016. The former couple is in an ongoing legal battle over their French winery Château Miraval.

A new motion filed by Jolie’s lawyers seeks to release communications the legal team claim prove that Pitt would not allow Jolie to sell her share of the winery to him unless she agreed to sign a nondisclosure agreement that was “more onerous” and “expansive.”

The filing includes the claim: “While Pitt’s history of physical abuse of Jolie started well before the family’s September 2016 plane trip from France to Los Angeles, this flight marked the first time he turned his physical abuse on the children as well. Jolie then immediately left him.”

Pitt’s representatives did not respond to Variety’s request for comment.

In the countersuit Angelina Jolie’s legal team filed last year , new details about the alleged September 2016 altercation emerged. The suit claimed that “Pitt choked one of the children and struck another in the face” and “grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her” during the altercation. Jolie’s lawyer stated the dispute started when Pitt accused her of being “too deferential” to their kids. The two allegedly started fighting in the plane’s bathroom.

“Pitt grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her, and then grabbed her shoulders and shook her again before pushing her into the bathroom wall,” the countersuit read. “Pitt then punched the ceiling of the plane numerous times, prompting Jolie to leave the bathroom.”

“When one of the children verbally defended Jolie, Pitt lunged at his own child and Jolie grabbed him from behind to stop him,” the countersuit read. “To get Jolie off his back, Pitt threw himself backwards into the airplane’s seats injuring Jolie’s back and elbow. The children rushed in and all bravely tried to protect each other. Before it was over, Pitt choked one of the children and struck another in the face. Some of the children pleaded with Pitt to stop. They were all frightened. Many were crying.”

Jolie “arranged for separate transportation at the airport” to bring her and the children to a hotel without Pitt, the suit continued. “She then went to wake Pitt up and told him that she and the children were going to a hotel. Pitt once again screamed at her, and pushed her down yet again.”

As  reported in August 2022 , Jolie was behind an anonymous 2016 lawsuit in which the plaintiff alleged being assaulted by her “then-husband” on a private plane. The actor told an FBI agent that Pitt “physically and verbally assaulted” her and their children.
