Scenic circle of scandinavia, june 2019, our experience with nv has been a joy.

Our experience with NV has been a joy. Alda has been terrific and very accommodating to our needs and we could not have asked for more from you or her.

Mary Jane, United States

Nordic odyssey, august 2018, i have already recommended nordic visitor to others..

I have already recommended Nordic visitor to others. The price was very reasonable, and accommodations top notch. As we did the self guided tour the side tours available that we took were top rate. We enjoyed being able to spend time exploring on our own and not being bound by a full schedule. The transportation was wonderful. Our guide, Alda, was very helpful.

Lisa, United States

A tale of four cities, may 2018, wonderful experience with nordic visitor..

Overall a wonderful trip and wonderful experience with Nordic Visitor.

Philip, United States

Highlights of scandinavia, august 2017, the information packet provided at the beginning was very helpful.

The information packet provided at the beginning was very helpful particularly the maps being marked up

Jenna, United States

The golden triangle of scandinavia, august 2016, completely lived up to our expectations.

Irja was wonderful! She put our trip together perfectly and our entire visit from one country to the next was seamless. It could not have been any easier or well coordinated. My emails were responded to promptly and all my questions were answered thoroughly and with patience. I usually plan all my trips myself but it was so nice to let Irja know what I wanted and let her do all the tedious planning and booking. It was really amazing and our trip completely lived up to our expectations! I feel like a spoiled traveler now because Irja took a lot of the travel planning headache away from me and she did a really great job. We really appreciated the complimentary upgrades too!

Alan, United States

The golden triangle of scandinavia, april 2016, high degree of professionalism.

Probably the most important service I received was Cecilia's prompt answers to all my questions. My requests were handled expeditiously. As for the accommodations, they ranged from very good to excellent. Of particular note is the fact that Cecilia had to react quickly to hotel employees' strike at one of the hotels. She quickly found arranged for me to stay at another hotel, which was most impressive (both her ability to improvise and the quality of the hotel). She was also quite helpful in recommending certain places of interest to visit and the advisability of purchasing city passes for transportation and sightseeing.

Golden Route of the Nordic Countries, May 2019

Superb customer service.

Mikael provided superb customer service. Very pleased with his attention to detail. He was very courteous and quite helpful.

Anosha, United States

Nordic odyssey, july 2018, we will definitely use your services when we travel again.

We were very happy with everything. We did four countries during our tour and we enjoyed it very much. We were also able to customize many options which was great. I have to say a huge "thank you" to Alda. She was very knowledgeable and very helpful. She also helped us customize our tour the way we wanted. We will definitely use your services when we travel again.

Graham, Singapore

The classic scandinavian roundtrip, april 2018, it was so user friendly.

It was so user friendly and Cicci was very good in answering any queries promptly

Highlights of Scandinavia & Baltic Cruise, June 2017

Your professional attitude in handling the minutest details is something i admire the most.

I have done two once circle tour of Iceland and now Scandinavian east to west. Your professional attitude in handling the minutest details is something I admire the most. It helps everyone to be prepared. Thanks

Highlights of Scandinavia & Baltic Cruise, July 2016

We´d like to return.

The tour was highly enjoyable. We visited some wonderful places. Whilst we like to be independent, the organisation of our transport and accommodation was very good and allowed us to really relax and unwind. There are many places we'd like to return to. More time in Norway is certainly on our agenda!

Classic Scandinavia, June 2019

The location of the hotels could not have been better.

The location of the hotels could not have been better - all centrally located with access to points of interest and public transport. Transportation between cities was also well-planned.

Jasper, United States

Highlights of scandinavia & finland cruise, may 2018, allowed us to truly relax.

We were just thrilled with how wonderful the trip was, and are very grateful to Alda for all of her hard work and flexibility with our changing needs and many requests. Having all of the trip details planned by you allowed us to truly relax and enjoy an unparalleled vacation.

Roger, South Africa

The golden triangle of scandinavia, september 2017, nordic visitor handled everything very professionaly.

Nordic Visitor handled everything very professionaly.

Marlene, New Zealand

Scandinavian highlights by car, september 2016, highly recommended.

My only question is: Why is there not an "Excellent" option? Our holiday was most excellent in every way...! From my first email enquiry regarding the tour to the last minute of our holiday every aspect was excellent. Cecilia made the whole planning experience smooth and seamless, and the tour itself was most excellent. Wow! What an incredible job Nordic Visitor does! We felt so spoilt because everything had been done for us... all we needed to do was drive and have fun. This was an incredible tour and I can't speak highly enough about the slick operation Nordic Visitor runs. Highly, highly recommended!

Laurie, United States

Highlights of scandinavia & finland cruise, july 2016.

The support that Cicci and her colleagues provided was outstanding. We had a few minor things that needed to be adjusted during our trip and we received immediate and prompt service. All questions were addressed quickly and when changes were required, all our requests were met with a willing attitude. The trip was wonderful and it was nice to know that we had someone to contact should we have encountered any problems.

The Classic Scandinavian Roundtrip, May 2019

Greatly appreciated.

The fact that the travel documents clearly laid out the necessary transfers for trains, boats, planes, etc. was greatly appreciated. When the transfers involved a tricky change, the documents made sure to describe the signs as well as possible to assist. It was also nice to have all of the documents given to us in a single email so access was simple and easy.

Duncan, Australia

Golden route of the nordic countries, may 2018, went very smoothly.

I was very impressed with the efficiency of your staff and how processes that were meant to work actually went very smoothly. We have been traveling for many years and your organization is the least stress creating travel group we have experienced.

Scandinavian Highlights by Car, September 2017

Definitely recommend your company.

I would definitely recommend your company. Very helpful on the phone when booking and arranging extra items such as GPS. Very good English spoken.

A Tale of Four Cities, July 2017

Amazing tour.

This was an amazing tour for us to take as a family holiday (with teenagers) giving us a little insight into each country. Clearly planned to make the most of each city.

Matt, United States

Scandinavian highlights by car, june 2016, went incredibly smoothly.

We had a great experience from the very beginning. Cicci was always quick to respond to emails and answered all our questions prior to us making our final booking. Once we booked all the details (hotels, etc) started coming in and it was really helpful to have the "highlights" booklet to help us plan what we wanted to see and where we should stop each day on our drive. Really everything went incredibly smoothly through out the entire trip! We have no complaints!!

Guided Small Groups

Independent cruise, independent train, scandinavian triangle, ideas for package holidays to scandinavia from uk.

Visiting Scandinavia from the UK is an enriching experience, with such fascinating cultures and jaw-dropping landscapes for you to discover. There are many reasons why Scandinavia is such a great travel destination for British visitors.

Firstly, it’s good to know that most locals speak English fluently. So whether you want to strike up a conversation or need help with directions, you won’t need to worry about any language barrier.

Another convenient thing about Scandinavia tours is that getting around is easy. This is thanks to the excellent transport connections and short distances between cities. That’s why we highly recommend the Scandinavian Triangle route – the capitals of Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen are some of the best places to visit in Scandinavia, and you can see them in one incredible trip. Spend time enjoying walking tours, savouring delicious meals in local restaurants, or cycling along pedestrianised streets and bike lanes.

What’s more, Sweden, Norway and Denmark are among the safest countries in the world. You can expect clean cities, high standards of road safety, and low crime rates too.

But aside from these practical advantages, Scandinavia is a dream to explore because it is simply beautiful. Travel here and you’ll discover a land brimming with gorgeous scenery, from the idyllic islands of the Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden, to the majestic fjords near Bergen, Norway.

The best time to visit Scandinavia depends on what you want to do. Come in the summer to enjoy the midnight sun, wild swimming and al fresco dining.

In the winter, expect a festive wonderland and smaller crowds at top attractions. You may even get a chance to meet Santa Claus or spot the aurora borealis on a northern lights Scandinavia tour!

As a Northern European tour operator, Nordic Visitor specialises in organising holidays to this beautiful corner of the world. We have many more ideas and Scandinavia travel tips to help you explore the region your way!

  • First time in the Nordics? See our 7 amazing Scandinavia tours for first-time visitors

Here’s one of our suggestions for a Scandinavia holiday:

Day 1 - Arrive in Stockholm, Sweden Fly into Stockholm Arlanda Airport and head to your hotel in the city centre. Spend some time walking through Gamla Stan (the Old Town). Enjoy a fika (a Swedish coffee break) with a nice pastry at one of the local cafés in this medieval neighbourhood.

Day 2 - The highlights of Stockholm Spend a full day in the Swedish capital, discovering the city’s attractions and districts. You could join a sightseeing tour to see the best of Stockholm in a day, taking you to must-see spots like the City Hall, Royal Palace and trendy Södermalm quarter.

Or, a ferry ride will whisk you off to the island of Djurgården, home to the Nordic Museum and Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum. Meanwhile, a day trip to the Stockholm Archipelago means you could swim in the Baltic Sea and hike through forests.

Day 3 - Fly to Copenhagen, Denmark Head to Stockholm Airport after breakfast and board a plane to Copenhagen. Once in Denmark’s capital, take a walk down the city’s popular Strøget street for a bite to eat, or go check out the fun and games at the famous Tivoli Gardens amusement park.

Day 4 - Discover Copenhagen Soak up the charms of Copenhagen today, either on your own or as part of an escorted tour. You might want to visit Rosenborg Castle, the Botanical Garden and Torvehallerne food market.

We also recommend hopping on a boat tour to see Christiansborg Palace, the Royal Danish Opera House and the colourful Christianshavn Canal from the water.

Day 5 - Overnight cruise to Oslo, Norway Ahead of your journey to Oslo, spend the day enjoying more of Copenhagen. Why not make like the bicycle-happy Danes and rent a bike?

You could check out the exquisite Amalienborg Palace, as well as the colourful Nyhavn harbour and the Little Mermaid statue. Later, head to the port for your cruise to Oslo.

Day 6 - Explore Norway’s capital city After your ship arrives early in the morning, the whole day is yours to roam Oslo. Take a walk to the bustling Aker Brygge waterfront area and visit the Akershus Fortress. Or, head to the Bygdøy peninsula to explore historic museums.

If you love art, make sure to take a walk through the delightful Vigeland Sculpture Park. Don’t miss a visit to Oslo City Hall if you want to see where the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held.

Day 7 - Scenic train journey to Flåm This morning, go to Oslo Central Station to begin your Norway in a Nutshell® experience – one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. Look out the window to see picturesque landscapes and quaint villages like Gol and Geilo.

Change at Myrdal to board the Flåm Railway for one of the top highlights of the entire trip: a 900-metre (half-mile) descent to the picturesque village of Flåm, where you’ll stay for the night.

Day 8 - Norwegian fjord cruise Prepare to witness breathtaking Norwegian scenery today, as you hop on a cruise that takes you through the fjords. You’ll be able to admire the glittering waters, cascading falls and forested mountains of Sognefjord, passing through Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord. Afterwards, it’s an exciting coach and train ride to Bergen.

Day 9 - Discover Bergen Known as the gateway to the fjords , Bergen is Norway’s charming second city with plenty of its own attractions to uncover. You can visit the medieval houses of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bryggen, and take the funicular up Mount Fløyen for panoramic views over the city and fjords.

There are also plenty of museums, shops and restaurants to check out on your last full day in Scandinavia

Day 10 - Depart from Bergen, Norway Fly back home from Bergen-Flesland Airport, having enjoyed 10 days in beautiful Scandinavia.

What other ideas are there for a package tour to Scandinavia?

There are so many more places to see in this part of Northern Europe. For example, you could delve deeper into the Nordic region, which is made up of Finland , Iceland , Sweden, Norway and Denmark. You might also want to incorporate St Petersburg in Russia on a Baltic cruise tour.

After starting your trip in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, you could choose to take a short ferry ride to Tallinn, Estonia’s capital. Then step aboard a cruise that whisks you to Stockholm. You’ll cross the Baltic Sea overnight to begin your exploration of the Scandinavian Triangle the following day.

Another alternative is to head deeper into rural Scandinavia. Discover natural gems like the breathtaking Norwegian fjords and mountains. You could journey even further up the west coast towards the Lofoten Islands on the Hurtigruten cruise , for an exciting Norway tour towards the Arctic Circle.

Like the sound of an odyssey to the far north of Europe? Then we recommend visiting Lapland  – a remote region covering parts of Sweden, Finland and Norway. Come in winter for the chance to see the northern lights, soak up snowy landscapes, and meet Santa Claus.

Or hop on a plane and visit Iceland as part of your Nordic experience!

Good to know : You might want to spend 8 days in Scandinavia or a couple of weeks exploring the region. Most of our Scandinavia holiday packages aren't set in stone, and there are many possibilities to tailor your plans.

We can modify your tour if you'd prefer to arrive in a different city or spend more free time in one destination than another. You might want to enjoy some private touring or add other towns to your trip.

Just ask your Nordic Visitor travel consultant for advice.

Scenic Scandinavia and its Fjords (14 Days)

The itinerary was great with lots of time built in for solo exploration. I liked having an orientation to the towns before heading out on my own. Michael had a lot of knowledge to share about the places we saw. He is s great story teller making everything interesting. His personality is perfect for the job. He kept everyone on time in a very respectful manner which was much appreciated. I also enjoyed the local guides who were also a wealth of knowledge. The optional excursions were Good value for the most part. Our driver was awesome. Despite the challenging terrain I felt very safe and comfortable on the coach. He was always very pleasant.

Focus on Scandinavia Tour

Focus on Scandinavia

There has been some renewed interest in Scandanavia as a touring destination, mainly among Australians and Americans (very few Brits) who have visited central Europe before and who now want to add something of the north to another tour or to their personal itineraries. Our party comprised 46 friendly travellers which was probably over the top for the pace of the tour and the management of the guests by the tour director, no matter how competent. Bus transportation was of good quality with safe, knowledgeable drivers which was a good thing as this tour clocks up over 2700km plus the odd ferry trip and a cruise on the Sogne Fjord. Check airport transfers are included. Our tour director Jane was well briefed and imparted all the essential information with good humour and in a clear manner. Guests should be prepared for longish days with only one or two hotel stopovers longer than the one night duration. For the cost of the holiday, the general standard of the hotels is sound to good. Much has been written about the location of some of the hotels being sometimes well away from the city centre but given there are several opportunities on optional tours (expensive) and included sightseeing to visit the central areas, this should not represent a problem. Denmark, Sweden and particularly Norway are expensive places to visit so be prepared to enjoy your included meals and maybe prepare your picnics for lunchtime stops. The breakfasts are almost entirely very good with lots of choice. Some , but not all, of the evening buffets are less appetising but one or two are excellent. Norway in particular is spectacularly scenic whilst Denmark, other than Copenhagen, is less eye catching. Tour guides are well prepared, speak excellent English and the use of whisper boxes is ideal. Previous reviewers are right in that this is a well presented and easily accessible tour, ideal for the first time visitor to Scandanavia who wishes to make a mental note of where they would like to visit or discover more on some future occasion.

We enjoyed the tour. The tour leader was engaging, informative and professional, the sights interesting and on the whole pretty spectacular. Only thing to improve is that the optional extra tours are not prominently shown and require cash payment in Euro’s. This was a bit inconvenient and costly as we didn’t know the cost of the options or realise how many euro’s we would need, and changing money to Euro cash when we were travelling in UK just prior to the tour was a pain.

Norway Tours from The UK

From city breaks in culture-rich Oslo to scenic journeys through the fjords, the Norwegian travel experts at Nordic Visitor can make your trip to Norway from the UK unforgettable and stress-free. In just a 2-hour flight from London you can be exploring Norway’s attractions by train, cruise or car on a bespoke holiday.

Travel to Norway from the UK

Looking for the perfect package holiday to Norway from the UK? Enjoy an authentic and stress-free trip to Norway from the UK with a bespoke tour arranged by the Norwegian travel experts at Nordic Visitor . As one of the leading travel agencies in Scandinavia, we take care of your hotels, your driving route and rental car (if you’re doing a road trip), your tickets for any travel by train or cruise, and any itinerary customisations you desire.

Getting to Norway from the UK

Most trips from the UK to Norway begin in the capital city, Oslo, which is home to many of Norway’s top cultural attractions as well as Norway’s main international airport. Luckily for British travellers, there are a number of short, inexpensive non-stop flights to Oslo Airport  from the UK:

  • London to Oslo: 2h 5m (Norwegian, British Airways, SAS, Ryanair)
  • Edinburgh to Oslo: 1h 45m (Norwegian)
  • Manchester to Oslo: 1h 55m (SAS, Ryanair)

See the Northern Lights in Arctic Norway

From Oslo it’s just 55 minutes via domestic flight to popular winter destinations like Tromsø, Kirkenes or the Lofoten Islands in Norway’s far north. With a short winter break in northern Norway between December and March, you can experience landscapes covered in snow and the incredible northern lights (aurora borealis) as well as winter sports like snowmobiling, dog sledding and more -- all in under a week. You could even spend a night in a snow hotel!

Visit the Norwegian Fjords by train or car

Another major highlight for travellers booking a Norwegian holiday from the UK are the fjords. From Oslo it’s easy to travel to the Bergen area and nearby fjords of western Norway by rental car or train in 7 - 14 days.

By car: Exploring Norway by car from the UK is the way to go if you plan to do some hiking in summer or if you just want to explore at your own pace. Nordic Visitor offers a range of customisable self-drive tours in Norway , available from May to September, that come with marked road maps, information about driving in Norway, our own travel guide showcasing the highlights of each region, and more.

By train: By far the most popular Norwegian train holiday is the Norway in a Nutshell classic tour , which includes a short fjord cruise on the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord and a scenic ride in vintage rail cars on the mountainous Flåm Railway. This tour has year-round departures and can be customised by Nordic Visitor to include additional nights in Bergen as well as side trips to other cities such as Stavanger.

Don’t want to travel on your own? Join a Guided Small Group Tour of Norway to see the fjords and more with an experienced local tour leader at the helm.

Take a Hurtigruten Coastal cruise

Another great way to experience Norway’s fjord-indented west coast is by travelling on a Hurtigruten cruise. With 34 ports of call between Bergen at the southern end and Kirkenes in the Arctic North, this voyage is a hit with travellers visiting Norway from the UK and makes a great addition to travelling by train from Oslo. Nordic Visitor is a Certified Hurtigruten Agent and offers cruise packages in Norway year-round, so you can even sail under the northern lights in wintertime.

Stree-free Travel from the UK with Norway experts

No matter what type of your holiday in Norway you choose, Nordic Visitor’s itineraries are designed to be well-structured yet flexible to be tailored to your needs and interests. Nordic Visitor can even arrange flexible self-drive tours in Norway and bespoke holiday packages in Scandinavia that combine stays in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and other Nordic destinations.

What’s more, you’ll have your own dedicated travel consultant to advise you about possible add-ons to your tour and handle all the details for you. You’ll also have access to Nordic Visitor’s 24/7 helpline while travelling in Norway, so in case of any any unexpected delays our friendly staff can quickly get your trip back on track.

Christin, United States

Best of northern norway classic - 71° north cape, december 2023.

The tour was perfect and went smoothly the entire time. Communication from Nordic Visitor was timely and detailed. Would book with this tour company again.

Ian, United Kingdom

Norway road trip - complete, july 2023, memories we'll cherish forever.

We found Norway to be a fabulous country and enjoyed every minute of our trip. The scenery was fantastic, the places visited were brilliant and the people were incredibly friendly and helpful. The information pack provided by Nordic Visitor was invaluable, the route chosen for us was superb and the places we stayed in were great. Likewise, the excursions offered, especially the Rib Safari were fantastic and gave us memories we'll cherish forever. Lastly, but by no means least, Irja, our travel consultant, couldn't have been more helpful and I would like to extend a huge thank you to her for all that she did.

Anne-Mari, Finland

Best of northern norway classic - 71° north cape, february 2023, unforgettable in so many ways.

It was unforgettable in so many ways, highlights after highlights. We knew to expect a lot after our trip to Iceland a couple of years ago, also organised by Nordic Visitor. Our expectations were exceeded and more. We saw northern lights three times, the food everywhere was excellent, experienced dog sledding in the moonlight and sleeping in the SnowHotel, and we saw a white reindeer! How lucky we are to have experienced all that. We have now returned home, happy and full of awe.

James, Australia

Northern lights by train and cruise, october 2023, a great experience.

Very well-organised tour and a great experience. Nordic Visitor were very professional and their experience was evident in choosing the well-located and comfortable accommodation they selected for us. Best of all we got to see the northern lights!

Jonathan, United States

Norway fjord route by car - classic, june 2023, incredibly happy.

Our travel agent, Małgorzata, was amazing to work with! She was able to add a few extra days in Oslo and arranged transportation via train to Bergen. Overall, I thought booking this vacation online and making payments was seamless. All the hotels we stayed in were nice, clean and safe! We loved the breakfast buffets, they were top notch! Also, collecting our rental car and navigating in a foreign country was seamless. We are incredibly happy that our tour package that we received at our first hotel included a physical map that had our tour highlighted.

Costel, Romania

Northern lights norway classic, february 2023, i'll be recommending nordic visitor to my friends.

The trip was really amazing. We had an absolutely superb time in Tromsø; hotel and excursions were spot on. The guide and whole the staff was really professional. Professional photos taken by the guide were really fantastic. They gave us excellent care, more than what we have experienced on any trip. Our favourite experience was the snowmobile, but catamaran trip was great too. Certainly I will be recommending it to my friends. I was very pleased that those who delivered the services showed a lot of professionalism.

Violetta, United States

Best of the norwegian fjords – express, august 2023, very satisfied customer.

This was my second experience using Nordic Visitor. I am a very satisfied customer. A few years ago we did a self-drive tour of Iceland that was just amazing. This time we did a train/cruise combo tour of Norway. Once again, I can only say you will have a fantastic experience and you will appreciate the labuor of organising and planning being handled by experts who know what they are doing. The cruises through the fjords were beautiful as were the train trips. We loved the combination of train and boat travel as each offered distinct beauty from a different perspective. The country is truly lovely and we look forward to booking future travel with Nordic Visitor!

Dian, United States

Classic norway, may 2023, extraordinary.

Extraordinary! Everything went off as planned without a hitch. Our travel guide, Juliana, was exceptional, very responsive in answering our questions and providing updates.

Oi, Singapore

Norway in a nutshell® - classic, september 2022, very satisfied with nordic visitor.

We were very satisfied with the tour and overall experience with Nordic Visitor. The hotels were strategically chosen and the quality of hotels was satisfactory. The optional tours were also highly recommended. Timings of the schedules throughout the tour were ideal and not rushed.

Julie, United States

Wonders of the norwegian fjords, august 2023, best vacation we ever had.

Our family of 5 (3 adult children) loved our Norway fjord tour. We saw the most beautiful scenery and loved each hotel. The food was delicious. Something for everyone. Our guide Al and driver Chris kept things running smoothly. We will have memories to last a lifetime. Thank you Nordic Visitor. Best vacation we ever had!

Alan, United Kingdom

Norway in a nutshell® express - winter, march 2023, an excellent decision to book with nordic visitor.

Following research, we decided to book with Nordic Visitor. This was an excellent decision. The booking process was easy and informative and Hanna was always available for guidance. The accommodation provided was top class and, importantly, convenient to the train stations from which we travelled. Our tour was amazing throughout with stunning scenery and sights.

Gailmarie, United States

Highlights of norway, july 2022, the tour gives you a fabulous overview of norway.

The tour gives you a fabulous overview of Norway. We did a lot of travel in between sights but this enabled us to have a real breadth of experience, from fjords to mountain passes, railway adventures and small boats. Our tour guide was excellent and the sights and experiences outlined for us were top-notch. The materials provided about our tour were excellent and well thought out.

How many other travellers are on each trip?

Group sizes are completely dependent on where and how you choose to travel with Contiki.

In Europe and in most of North America and New Zealand, group sizes can range between 24 – 53 awesome travellers.

In regions like Asia, Australia, Africa and Latin America, and on some North America and New Zealand trips, our group sizes are considerably smaller – as low as 12 or up to 30 travellers max.

Detour trips offer a different type of experience and max out at 16 people led by a local host.

Wondering what is so great about travelling together? Check out the Contiki Social travel page.

Each group is administered according to our strict Covid policies which can be viewed here.

What’s included?

All essential trip elements have been catered to ensure a great time, with great people in great places. But you mean more specifically right?

Your accommodation, essential trip transport, and a good handful of meals are included in the cost of your Contiki trip (on most trips we offer breakfast every day, plus a hand-picked selection of authentic and tasty meals).

To fill your days and Insta feeds we have Included Experiences, which are basically the sights and activities we think you just can’t afford to miss. Of course you also get our expert and highly trained team of Contiki staff to support throughout.

A day by day breakdown of inclusions and Free Time Add-Ons are available on the trip specific pages.

We always try to accommodate special requests such as birthdays, proposals etc. Please chat to our team and we can explore how we may support the request.

What’s not included?

Contiki social travel trips have a large degree of flexibility built into them to enable you to truly own your experience. This means that some trip elements are not included in the initial cost and may require additional budgeting.

Flights to and from your starting and ending points are not included in the cost of your trip. These can be added on during the booking process either online or via our contact center or booked independently by you.

Each trip contains the right amount of free time for you to explore or indulge your travel desires. We offer Free Time Add-Ons, which are additional experiences that are not included in the overall price. These add ons are highlighted on the specific trip page. Your Trip Manager will highlight these to you and organise their booking on trip. Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important.

Travel insurance and visas are also not included in the cost of your trip, and should be booked separately.

What are Contiki's sustainability credentials?

Travel comes with responsibilities. That’s why we’re determined to travel sustainably and consciously, and that’s why we’re willing to take a stand on issues closest to our hearts. Find out more details here . With the help of our four-point Climate Action Plan, we're now on a journey to Net Zero - committing to carbon reductions and evolving to support the transition to a low-carbon future. Grieg's troldhaugen in bergen, visit edvard grieg's home & museum at troldhaugen.

One of the leading pianists and composers of the Romantic era, Bergen's favorite son, Edvard Grieg, brought the musical traditions of his native Norway to international prominence through his work during the second half of the 19th century. Recognized as Norway's national composer, Grieg is a beloved and revered figure throughout his native country – and his home town of Bergen – to this day. You'll enjoy a guided visit to the Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen, a complex in Bergen comprising Grieg's former villa (Troldhaugen), where he resided with his wife Nina from 1885 until his death in 1907; the couple's gravesite; the hut where Grieg composed his music; a museum dedicated to his life and work, completed in 1995; and the Troldsalen concert hall.

Denmark's Frederiksborg Palace

Early-entry private visit to frederiksborg palace, a danish renaissance masterpiece.

Dating to the early 1600s as a royal residence for the King of Denmark and Norway, Frederiksborg Castle – built atop three islands in a lake near Copenhagen – has been through many trials, tribulations and changes over the centuries. Following a disastrous fire in the mid-19th century, this Danish Renaissance masterpiece was reconstructed and restored according to its original plans and drawings. Today, it's the Danish Museum of National History… and you're invited to discover its grandeur on an early-opening private visit.

Grand Hotel Oslo

For nearly 150 years, a grand experience at an oslo icon.

Everyone deserves to feel grand… like the guest experience you'll have at Grand Hotel Olso, based on true Nordic luxury delivered by a well-trained and enthusiastic international team. Norway's most prestigious luxury hotel first opened its doors in 1874, and has been host to the people of Norway, international guests, world leaders, celebrities and the Nobel Peace Prize laureates ever since.

The amazing wildlife of the Arctic

Discover the wildlife capital of the arctic....

On your unforgettable cruise along the coast of Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean and the Greenland Sea, you'll encounter islands of glaciers, fjords, and natural "ice sculpture," revered for their silent majesty. Your daily itinerary is flexible – go where the weather and movement of wildlife tell you to go, seeking tiny Svalbard reindeer, polar bears, walruses, whales, Arctic foxes, red-throated divers, pink-footed geese, and more. A wildlife filmmaker and expedition naturalists accompany you throughout your voyage in the "land of the Midnight Sun," where daylight never ends. Enjoy a camaraderie that only Arctic explorers can share... you'll be the closest you can get to the North Pole!

Tauck Exclusive – Private evening at the Vasa Museum, Stockholm

Exclusive reception and dinner at the vasa museum.

The Vasamuseet (Vasa Museum) is home to the world's only remaining intact 17th-century warship, the Vasa. When this ornate wooden warship was completed in 1628, it was the largest, most powerful battleship in the world; on her maiden voyage in 1628 she capsized and sank to the bottom of Stockholm's harbor until discovered in 1956 and raised in 1961… 333 years later! The Vasa will also be your dining companion during Tauck's exclusive, private reception and dinner at the museum.

Fascinating Scandinavia – natural wonders, World Heritage & the most beautiful major cities of the North!

Stockholm – oslo – tanum – gothenburg – elsinore – copenhagen – roskilde – karlskrona.

Based on our own experience and the many tips we have received from enthusiastic holidaymakers, it is our pleasure to present the most famous highlights of Scandinavia !

Day 1: Convenient air travel to Stockholm

Your itinerary

We start our journey with the flight to Stockholm, the charming capital of Sweden. Our friendly, professional, English-speaking cultural tour guide will meet us at the airport. We will drive to our beautiful hotel in the Stockholm area, where we will spend the first night.

Day 2: Stockholm (UNESCO World Heritage Site) & Mariefred

Drottningholm Castle (World Heritage)

After a relaxed breakfast we will explore Stockholm together. The city is also called “the Venice of the North” because it stretches over 14 Baltic Sea islands and has more than 50 bridges. In a three-hour guided tour, with our local guide, we will get a comprehensive impression of the city. Our tour ends at Drottningholm. The small town on the island of Lovön in Lake Mälaren literally translates as “Island of the Queen”. We will admire the magnificent Drottningholm Castle from the outside. It has been the residence of the Swedish royal family since 1981 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you wish, you can also get a look at the inside of the impressive building. Afterwards, we will continue our journey to Mariefred. The main attraction of the town is Gripsholm Castle, which lies directly on the banks of the Mälaren. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia celebrated their silver wedding anniversary there in 2001. After a full day out, we will go to our comfortable hotel in the Karlstadt area.

Day 3: Oslo and Tanum (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Oslo

Today, freshly strengthened from breakfast, we set off towards Norway. There we will discover the colourful and nature-loving city of Oslo on a guided city walk. It is one of the most visited places in the Nordic countries. Surrounded by a picturesque landscape of fjords, mountains and forests, it is considered one of the greenest capitals in Europe. We will then head south along the Norwegian and Swedish archipelagos to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tanum. There are about 10,000 engravings in total with a wide variety of motifs from the Bronze Age. In Vitlycke, for example, you will find, among other things, Bohuslän‘s most famous rock carving – the Bridal Couple, also called the Holy Wedding. The area is divided into different places, which we can visit depending on the time available and the weather conditions. You will spend the last night in the Vänersborg area.

Day 4: Gothenburg, panoramic ferry trip & Elsinore (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Gothenburg

Today we will be guided through Sweden‘s second largest city. This charming town was established in the early 17th century and has a long history of fishing tradition. Our local expert will show us the many highlights of the modern, cosmopolitan port metropolis of Gothenburg. Then we will leave Sweden and take a 30-minute ferry ride from Helsingborg to Elsinore in Denmark. Once there, we will marvel at the Renaissance Kronborg Castle (UNESCO World Heritage Site). For centuries it served as a fortress on the Danish-Swedish border, and was even the historical setting for Shakespeare‘s world-famous tragedy “Hamlet”. Our modern hotel is located in the Zealand area today.

Day 5: Copenhagen and Roskilde (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Roskilde Cathedral (World Heritage)

After another relaxing night, our local tour guide will show us the most important places in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, during a three-hour city tour. Afterwards you will have the opportunity to explore the city yourself. Stroll through the small streets with their colourful little houses or watch the hustle and bustle from a cosy café. Alternatively, you can take part in a fantastic, optional excursion to Roskilde and visit Roskilde Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site) as part of a guided tour (admission included). Scandinavia‘s first Gothic cathedral is Denmark‘s most important church building and serves as the burial place of 40 regents. At the end of the day, we will drive back to Sweden together over the famous Öresund Bridge. The architectural masterpiece, almost nine kilometres long, was completed in 2000 and connects the Danish city of Copenhagen to the Swedish city of Malmö. Next we will have two days’ comfortable stay in our beautiful hotel in the Scania area.

Day 6: Explorer day: Karlskrona (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Marine Museum, Elk Park & Archipelago Landscape

Elk Park

Today the naval city of Karlskrona awaits you. Join us on this interesting, optional full-day excursion. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. It is an ideal starting point for boat trips to Sweden‘s southernmost archipelago with over 1,500 islands. After a leisurely stroll through the city, we will visit the Marine Museum together (admission included). There we will find not only interesting and educational exhibitions, but also ship models from the 18th century and a real submarine. Afterwards we will visit an elk park (admission included) and observe the largest species of deer in the world. Sweden is home to around 400,000 elk, which can weigh up to 800 kilograms and reach speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour. That is why you can find numerous road signs on the roads warning motorists about the elk.

Day 7: Panoramic Drive South Sweden & Woodland Cemetery Skogskyrkogården (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Skogskyrkogården Cemetery (World Heritage)

We will start our day with a panoramic drive back to Stockholm. On the way we will stop a few times at impressive places, such as the famous locks of the Göta Canal in Berg. They connect the Göta Canal, also called “Sweden’s blue ribbon”, to Lake Roxen and are visited by thousands of tourists every year. The imposing, almost one-kilometre-long lock complex is one of Sweden‘s most famous technical structures. Before we spend the last night at our hotel in the Stockholm area, we will make a short stop at Skogskyrkogården woodland cemetery. An example of the successful combination of architecture, culture and nature, the cemetery complex, which covers over 100 hectares, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Numerous prominent people were buried here, such as the famous actress Greta Garbo and popular pop singer Gunnar Wiklund.

Customs regulations:

Sweden: The import and export of goods is subject to the regulations of the European Union. The principle of no checks on goods does not exclude spot checks as part of police surveillance of borders and police control of cross-border traffic. Persons younger than 20 years of age are generally not allowed to import alcohol, persons younger than 18 years of age are generally not allowed to import tobacco into Sweden. For their own use, persons who are 20 or 18 years of age and older may bring alcohol and tobacco into Sweden. Food can also be brought in for personal use. The quantity limit for fish is limited to a maximum of 15 kilos. Norway: Norwegian customs regulations are very strict. The import of alcohol, but also tobacco, is subject to strict conditions. Even small violations of the limits are severely punishable. High import duties are payable when importing cars. There are no restrictions on the import and export of national and foreign currency, but registration is required for amounts over NOK 25,000. The export of self-caught fish is now only permitted if it has been caught under the guidance of a registered fishing enterprise. The new export quota is a maximum of 18 kg twice a year. Denmark: The import and export of goods is subject to the regulations of the European Union. The principle of no checks on goods does not exclude spot checks as part of police surveillance of borders and police control of cross-border traffic. Weapons may not be imported without prior permission from the Danish Police or the Danish Ministry of Justice. Further customs information regarding the import of goods can be obtained from the embassy of your destination country. This is the only place from which to obtain legally correct and binding information. Important: If you’re travelling to Great Britain from outside the UK, your personal allowances mean you can bring in a certain amount of goods without paying tax or duty. If you go over your allowances you must declare all your goods and pay tax and duty on all the goods in that category. Please inform yourself about the current customs regulations: www.gov.uk/bringing-goods-into-uk-personal-use/arriving-in-Great-Britain.

Safety instructions:

Crime: Petty crime such as pickpocketing is particularly common in city centres, tourist centres and transfer and transit places such as ferries and airports. Keep money, IDs, driving licences and other important documents safe and separate and preferably store copies electronically. Prefer cashless payment and take only the cash you need for the day and no unnecessary valuables.

Special criminal provisions:

Sweden: Violation of the ban on photographing and entering designated military protected objects is punishable by substantial fines and/or imprisonment. Under the Swedish Weapons Act, the carrying, commerce and import of tear gas sprays is prohibited. The consumption of alcohol is prohibited in many public places. Possession of drugs – even in small quantities for personal consumption – is prohibited in Sweden, as is consumption itself (prison sentence of up to three years, serious cases can also attract significantly longer sentences). Carrying knives is prohibited in public places. Norway: Alcohol consumption is prohibited in public places and parks. The carrying of even the smallest quantities of narcotics will generally lead to arrest at the border, the imposing of a ban on entry or imprisonment. Denmark: Since 2018, Denmark has had a ban on covering up in public spaces. If an item of clothing that covers the face is worn in a public place, a fine may be imposed. The prohibition does not apply to a covering of the face that serves a legitimate purpose. The regulation is particularly directed against Muslim women‘s clothing, such as the burqa or niqab. The carrying of daggers or knives in public is prohibited. It is also prohibited to carry, trade and import tear gas spray.

Medical information:

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest country-specific health advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website ( https://travelhealthpro. org.uk/countries ). Each countryspecific page has information on vaccine recommendations, any current health risks or outbreaks, and factsheets with information on staying healthy abroad.

Medical care:

Sweden | Denmark: In general, the level of care in Sweden and Denmark is good to very good. You should get a free UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK. If you already have an EHIC it will still be valid as long as it remains in date. The GHIC or EHIC entitles you to state provided medical treatment that may become necessary during your trip. Any treatment provided is on the same terms as Swedish/Danish nationals. Norway: For emergency dental services (tannlegevakt), payment usually has to be made on the spot in cash or usually by credit card. If you are a UK national ordinarily resident in the UK, you can use your UK passport to access state provided medical treatment, if it becomes necessary during your trip. Any treatment provided is on the same terms as Norwegian nationals. Most people cannot use a UK-issued European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) to get medical treatment in Norway.

It is important to take out appropriate travel insurance for your needs. A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance and you should have both before you travel. It does not cover all health-related costs, for example, medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment and non-urgent treatment. It is recommended that you take out international health insurance with the option of repatriation to the UK. Customers must ensure that they are in good physical and mental health in line with the trip in question. Customers must enquire about the physical mobility and psychological autonomy required for this trip.

Additional Excursions

We design our itineraries so that all the necessary excursions and places of interest are included to give the passenger the best possible holiday at an affordable price. However, often, the tour representative or local ground operator will offer passengers additional excursions that are designed to enhance the holiday experience and are not included in the tour cost.

Breakfast will be provided at the hotels. The breakfast is usually in a separate dining area of the hotel and is usually a continental breakfast, which will consist of tea, coffee, bread, cereals, fruit and yoghurt.

Passengers can choose from vegetarian, or non-vegetarian (Jain or Halal will not always be available) meals. The meals are pre-set buffet, and a choice of menu is not available. Meals will be provided with tap water only.

Dinners are usually provided within the hotel or restaurant in a separate dining facility. You should always consult your tour representative if you are not sure of what ingredients a dish contains.

Not all hotels in this tour will have air-conditioning so you should carry a small portable fan with you especially during the summer months.

Please also note that not all hotels provide a kettle so if hot water is required for warming milk etc. in the hotel then it is advisable to carry a bottle warmer/kettle as well as a thermos flask. Passengers may also want to carry a small travel iron and hairdryer etc., as many hotel rooms may not have these facilities.

Some hotels will provide two single beds put together as a Double occupancy room, as this sort of configuration allows the hotel to use a room for multi-use, we do contract with such hotels, and you should be prepared for such eventualities.

If you use services such as the phone or mini-bar or pay TV whilst in your room, you will have to pay the hotel directly when you check out; these services are not included in your tour cost.

The maximum occupancy per room on this tour is 3 person(s) excluding infants.

Other Advisories

Once in Scandinavia, you must carry your passport with you at all times.

High Altitude

You should only make trips to high altitudes if you feel healthy. The following recommendations apply:

Advanced age is no barrier to high altitude. For blood pressure patients who are well controlled with medication, the altitude is not a concern. Asthmatics can travel to high altitudes without any problems. High-altitude air is less polluted with particles that can cause an asthma attack. Epileptics who are well controlled with medication should be able to negotiate the altitude.

Pregnant women: There may be a certain risk for pregnancy even without pre-existing diseases over 2500-3000 metres. Caution is therefore advised if in doubt, please consult your doctor in advance.

Infants: Short-term stays at the mountain tops are unproblematic. Infants and young children are often unable to equalise pressure during descent and are therefore increasingly at risk of ear irritation. Regular swallowing (drinking, sucking on a bottle) during the descent can prevent the occurrence of irritation.

Because children can chill faster than adults, always pay attention to sufficient protection from the cold at high altitude. Sunglasses and a good sunscreen are necessary on the glaciers!

High altitude visits not recommended for:

Lung and heart patients who are already short of breath while at rest or when climbing stairs are advised not to stay at high altitude. Patients with angina pectoris or severely impaired performance with heart enlargement and heart failure should not visit high altitude. Coronary artery disease (angina pectoris) and heart enlargement with medical therapy should not visit high altitude. Patients with a pronounced risk profile for cardiovascular disease (smoker + high blood pressure + diabetes + high blood fats + overweight + occasional chest pain) should consult the doctor before visiting high altitude.

Do not stay at high altitude after having striated muscles or a stroke.

Pick up and Drop off points & Times

You should always follow the protocol for flights as set out by the airline. You should check the board at the airport for any flight delays, change of gate number or any other useful information provided by the airline.

Visas & Passports

UK and USA passport holders don't need a visa to visit Scandinavia

All other nationals should check with the relevant embassy.

For further information please refer below link:

The Summers are light and the temperatures are mild. Above the Arctic Circle you can experience the Midnight Sun. Much of the Nordic countries are covered in snow during Winter; although snow is much rarer in the south and along the coast. During winter you will experience the dark season; above the Arctic Circle there will be a period without daylight. Thus increasing the chances of seeing the Northern Lights. Autumn offers an explosion of colours while Spring brings nature alive after a long winter. During Autumn and Spring you have the opportunity to visit some of the most popular destinations outside high season.

Wheelchairs & Child Seats

We will accept lightweight manual wheelchair for travel, subject to them being capable of being stowed in the luggage hold of the vehicle. It is also essential that a family member is also on tour to push the wheelchair. Star Tour’s will also request hotels for suitably equipped rooms; however, this is only on a request basis and cannot be guaranteed.

For us to request a wheelchair for you with the airline, this request should be made to us in writing at the time of booking. The allocation of the wheelchair will be at the discretion of the airline/airport.

In most of Europe, the use of child seats in coaches is mandatory for children under the age of 12 or who are shorter than 150 cm. Children under 7 years old or less than 125 cm tall must use a child seat with a harness or a restraint system. Children between 7 and 12 years old or between 125 and 150 cm tall must use a booster seat or a seat cushion. It is the responsibility of the child's parent or guardian to provide the appropriate child seat for their child.

Nordic Visitor provided a Scottish adventure with a good variety of stops at historical and culturally significant locations. I enjoyed the scenery as we went along roads that the larger tour buses could not go. They also accurately worked in the timing to miss the large tours at the sites. I had several of the best meals that were included in the package. Save your time and effort and hire Nordic Visitor to plan your tour.

Everything went so smoothly, from pick-up at the airport to getting the rental car to checking into the accommodation. Planning with Rebecca & the Edinburgh team was easy - questions were always answered quickly. We were also extremely grateful that we were able to check into our first hotel early. Thank you all!

1. What countries are in the United Kingdom?

The United Kingdom (UK) is made up of 4 countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain includes England, Scotland and Wales.

2. Is the UK safe to visit?

Much like other countries in Northern Europe, you’ll find the UK is a safe place to travel. Similar to many European and Nordic countries, the UK ranks among the 40 safest nations in the Global Peace Index . You’ll find there’s also a modern healthcare system in place.

3. What is the best time of year to go to the UK?

While there’s no bad time to explore the UK, we recommend visiting sometime between April and October. In the UK, this spans spring, summer and autumn, and it’s when attractions have their longest opening hours.

Plus, temperatures are at their warmest from April to October – all the better for soaking up the sights. But, like the rest of Northern Europe, it’s worth remembering the weather can be changeable no matter the season.

Summer – June, July and August – is the most popular time of year to visit the UK. Not only because you’ll get the most daylight hours, but also because this is the warmest season.

In the countryside, you’ll see lush woodland and hillsides carpeted in purple heather. Meanwhile, the cities are bustling with visitors from around the world. You’ll also be able to take your pick from countless festivals celebrating the arts, food and more.

If you’d prefer to experience the UK at a quieter time of year, we recommend travelling in spring or autumn. After the chill of winter, April and May bring the joy of blooming flowers and longer days.

Or, visit during the autumn months of September and October, to see the trees turn fiery shades of orange and red. And if it gets chilly, just head for one of the snug pubs or cafés the UK is renowned for.

Read more about what to expect as the seasons change in this blog on the best time to visit the UK .

4. How many days do I need for my trip?

The amount of time you should spend in the UK depends on what you’d like to see and do during your visit.

If you’d like to experience more than one country within the UK, we recommend allowing at least 7-10 days for your trip. This way, you’ll have time to discover some of the top attractions in England, Scotland and Wales. And you’ll get to stay in more than one place.

Meanwhile, if you prefer exploring at a leisurely pace, you’ll want to give yourself longer, around 2-3 weeks. By spending more days at each stop, you’ll be able to delve deeper into the UK’s history, culture and landscapes.

Travel with Nordic Visitor and you can pick the length of trip that suits you from these UK tour packages. Plus, you could extend your time in the UK by adding extra nights to your itinerary.

5. Where are the top places to visit in the UK?

The UK might seem small, given that it's just over a third of the size of Texas, and half that of Spain. But when it comes to culture, history and natural beauty, you’ll find that this group of British countries has so much to offer.

Plus, with distinct landscapes and different nations within easy reach of each other, you can experience a lot on one trip. To get you started, here are some of the UK’s must-visit spots:

England • London • Bath • Oxford • York • Stonehenge • Lake District National Park • Peak District National Park

In the UK, this includes a mix of gorgeous historical properties and contemporary retreats. Expect a warm welcome and a location that’s right in the heart of things. Not to mention a tasty breakfast each morning.

England’s alnwick castle is a must-visit for harry potter fans.

Alnwick Castle is a medieval fortress dating from the 11th century which dominates the surrounding ... [+] Northumberland landscape.

In the heart of Northumberland, England, lies a castle and country house that draws history buffs, architectural enthusiasts, and movie fans alike.

With its majestic structure and long history, Alnwick Castle commands attention and admiration from all. However, it holds a special place in the hearts of Harry Potter fans worldwide, not least because it offers broomstick flying lessons.

Famed as a filming location for the beloved series of movies, the castle offers visitors a journey into the realm of witchcraft and wizardry that captured the imaginations of millions.

An 11th-Century Landmark

Built in the 11th century, the castle’s initial purpose was to serve as a defensive post against incursions from the north, helping to secure the volatile lands in the north of England.

Over time, Alnwick Castle evolved from a purely defensive stronghold to the esteemed residence of the Percy family, the Dukes of Northumberland. This lineage, notable for its significant influence within British nobility, has lent the castle a legacy of power and political intrigue.

Architecturally, Alnwick Castle is a patchwork of military and domestic design trends spanning the medieval to the post-medieval era.

Its formidable towers and broad battlements are emblematic of the castle's military origins, while subsequent renovations and expansions reflect a transition towards the more opulent design preferences of residences of the wealthy.

Alnwick Castle dominates the skyline of Alnwick in Northumberland, England.

A Touch Of Hogwarts Magic

Alnwick Castle shot to global fame when its courtyards and grounds were used as a filming location for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter film series.

Specifically, it featured in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , portraying the iconic locations where Harry Potter and his friends learn to fly broomsticks and play Quidditch.

The castle's authentic medieval look provided the perfect setting for the magical school, enchanting viewers and making it an instant must-visit for fans.

Visitors to Alnwick Castle can take part in various Harry Potter-themed activities that bring the movies to life.

The castle offers broomstick training sessions in the very spot where Harry had his first flying lesson, allowing fans to step into the shoes of their favorite characters, and get some memorable photos.

Guided tours delve into the castle's role in the Harry Potter films, highlighting specific locations used in the movies and sharing behind-the-scenes stories. These tours offer a fascinating insight into the filmmaking process and how Alnwick Castle was transformed into Hogwarts.

Beyond Harry Potter

While Alnwick Castle's Harry Potter connection might be the main draw for many, the castle has so much more to offer.

The formidable towers and broad battlements of Alnwick Castle are emblematic of its military ... [+] origins.

Firstly, the castle’s fame on screen is not limited to the Harry Potter franchise. Alnwick Castle has featured in Transformers: The Last Knight , and stood in for Brancaster Castle in two Downton Abbey Christmas specials.

Its rich history is encapsulated in well-preserved interiors, where visitors can explore opulent rooms filled with art and antique furniture. The castle also hosts various historical and cultural exhibitions throughout the year, providing a deeper understanding of its significance through the ages.

It also provides an atmospheric backdrop for cultural events ranging from book talks from historical fiction authors to comedy performances of medieval history.

Alnwick Garden , adjacent to the castle, is another attraction not to be missed. This contemporary pleasure garden, created by the Duchess of Northumberland, features spectacular water sculptures, a poison garden, a treehouse restaurant, and garden cafe.

Alnwick Castle Planning Tips

The castle is open to the public from late March to late October, with various events and activities for all ages. Visitors are advised to check the castle's official website for the latest information on opening times, ticket prices, and any special events in order to make the most of their trip.

Given its location in the far northeast of England, accommodation will likely be required as part of your trip.

For the most authentic taste of rural England, stay in Alnwick itself. Home to just 8,000 people, this historic market town offers hotel accommodation, shops and restaurants.

Stay in the 300-year-old coaching inn The White Swan Hotel , which incorporates a magnificent staircase and restaurant decor taken from the former ocean liner RMS Olympic , sister vessel of Titanic .

Venturing farther afield to Newcastle offers a wider range of accommodation options, from luxurious hotels to budget-friendly hostels, and is an appealing base for those wanting to combine history and culture with the excitement of a city break.
