20 Best Small Campers & Travel Trailers Under 20 Feet

Posted by D.T. Christensen June 10, 2019 Updated February 14, 2024

Lightweight, affordable campers and travel trailers have ushered in a new era of RVing, particularly for young travelers eager to hit the road. Here’s how to make the most of your camper’s weight and space.

Forget your grandpa’s clunky behemoth: today’s trailer manufacturers know there’s a growing mass of travelers that don’t want to spend a fortune on a bulky trailer or the gas-guzzling truck you’ll need to pull it.

As a result, there’s never been a better selection of lightweight travel trailers that can be pulled with mid-sized SUVs, and in many cases, large cars. The simplest of them are affordable for folks with limited recreational budgets, and many hold their resale value better than larger trailers.

Here’s a look at 20 of our favorite small travel trailers and campers, from compact fiberglass teardrops under 2,000 pounds to more built-out, spacious models under 3,500 pounds. And if you’re looking for something even smaller, check out our favorite DIY teardrop trailers .

Understanding Trailer Weights

A note about weight: we’ve organized trailers by their dry weight, or base weight, which doesn’t include water and equipment you’ll add for your trip.

The dry weight is typically much lower than the actual weight you’ll travel with, as cargo can add up fast. When shopping for a trailer, it’s important to consider the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which is the maximum towing weight rating for your vehicle.

For example, the MeerKat below weights less than 1,000 pounds, but the GVWR is 2,000 pounds, which means your vehicle must be rated to tow 2,000 pounds in order to tow the trailer.

Even if the actual (wet) weight of your MeerKat ends up around 1,500 pounds after water and cargo’s added, the trailer manufacturer still recommends the higher 2,000-pound GVWR. Visit Changin’ Gears to learn more about various RV weights.

Under 2,000 Pounds

1. the meerkat.

meerkat trailer

Dry weight: 920 lbs / Length: 13′

The MeerKat’s 920-pound body is easy to move by hand and tow with nearly any 4-cyclinder vehicle. Standard features include a camp stove, cushions, sink, closet, icebox and more. Equipment like a fridge, awning or front storage box is optional but can add more weight.

Even with its small frame, the MeerKat offers plenty of standing and sitting space, and the table that transitions into a bed sleeps two comfortably. You’d be hard-pressed to find this much packaged in a smaller trailer.

2. Happier Camper HC1

happier camper hc1 trailer

Dry weight: 1,100 lbs / Length: 13′

This fiberglass trailer is a social media influencer’s wet dream. It’s small, capable of getting into all those parks, cities and nooks where larger trailers can’t, and maintains the retro vibe that made travel trailers cool to begin with.

Its Adaptiv™ modular interior setup makes it easy to customize based on your travel needs, and practical features make this trailer more than just a vintage-lookin’ novelty.

3. Taxa Outdoors Cricket

taxa outdoors cricket

Dry weight: 1,732 lbs / Length: 15′

We had the opportunity to explore the Cricket in person and its body is as unique as the photos let on. Its alternative design makes a great use of the limited space inside, and the pop up roof really opens things up once you’ve hit camp.

The thoughtfully designed interior offers stellar organization and all the conveniences of home, all packed in an easy-to-tow trailer built for any adventure.

4. Scamp 16′ Camper

scamp 16 foot trailer

Dry weight: 1,750-2,000 lbs / Length: 16′

Before new trailers like the Cricket popped up, small, lightweight options were generally limited to the Scamp, the Casita and similar models. Though you have more options on the market than ever, the Scamp still holds its place as a solid vintage investment.

It’s available in 13-, 16- or 19-foot models, but we dig the 16-foot version for its balance of space and weight. The smallest model can feel cramped, and the 19-foot model is a fifth-wheel design that doesn’t have the same convenience or aesthetic appeal.

5. Safari Condo Alto R Series

safari condo r series

Dry weight: 1,825 to 1,867 lbs / Length: 17′ 3″

Safari Condo’s goal with the Alto was to create an ultralight trailer with the “lowest possible drag coefficient,” and one look at the R Series proves they hit the mark.

This makes for a lightweight, spacious trailer that can be pulled by most vehicles. The retractable roof makes the interior feel far more roomy, but even the fixed-roof model has a sufficient air of comfort.

6. nuCamp TAB Teardrop Camper

tab camper

Dry weight: 1,826 lbs / Length: 15′

The TAB is known for its U-shaped seating design that maximizes space, which is scarce in a typical teardrop. You’ll have everything you need – table, kitchenette and sleep space – and not much else.

nuCamp’s craftsmanship is second to none, and if you don’t need the extra space of a larger travel trailer, keeping things simple with a teardrop works great for many campers.

7. Little Guy Mini Max

little guy mini max

Dry weight: 1,993 lbs / Length: 17′ 2″

Like the TAB above, Little Guy’s Mini Max offers a well-designed, if small, space in a vintage-but-modern exterior. It’s a bit longer and heavier than the TAB, but for the extra weight you’ll get a bit more room to unwind.

We’re big fans of the Mini Max’s window setup, which lets in more air and natural light than most teardrops on the market.

8. casita liberty.

casita liberty

Dry weight: 1,970 to 2,480 lbs / Length: 16′ or 17′

The Casita’s often compared to the Scamp and both have made design and construction changes over the years to meet demands of both brands’ markets. The Liberty is a slightly larger, roomier version of the Scamp and can weigh more depending on upgrades and options.

There’s an unending discussion about Casitas vs. Scamps online, so if you’re considering either, it’s helpful to see feedback from current and past owners of both trailer brands.

9. Serro Scotty Trailer

scotty trailer

Dry weight: 2,230 lbs / Length: 17’ 2”

Two things you need to know here: Serro Scotty’s roots date back to the 1950s, when John Serro began building travel trailers by hand in Irwin, Pennsylvania. Second, there’s a dog on the side of trailer.

Firmly in the over-2,000-pounds range, the classic Serro Scotty offers a comfortable living space that doesn’t feel constrained. At just over 17 feet, it’s still agile and versatile enough to tow with an SUV and park in many a campground.

10. Hymer Touring GT

hymer touring gt

Dry weight: 2,480 lbs / Length: 18’ 11”

The Touring GT’s no-frills exterior and comfortable interior focus on simple, minimalistic living that’s easy to customize based on your traveling needs.

The German-based trailer’s had decades of success and growth in Europe, but is just now hitting US shores as a popular alternative to similarly small travel trailers. The Touring has all the classic makeup of a vintage trailer with modern conveniences like a pop-up roof, practically designed kitchen and organization galore.

11. The 17 Foot Escape

17 foot escape trailer

Dry weight: 1,970 to 2,400 lbs / Length: 17′

The Escape joins the Scamp and Casita as the “three fiberglass amigos,” as they’re known in the RV world. We don’t know if this is true or not but it sounds okay.

The Escape’s 17-foot model offers slightly more room than the 16-foot Scamp and according to some owners, a nicer interior than its competition. Its construction, resale value and overall material quality make it a popular choice among RVers who want more than a barebones trailer but less than “here’s my entire house on wheels.”

12. Forest River r•pod

forest river rpod trailer

Dry weight: 2,342 lbs / Length: 18′ 4″

Forest River’s been in the RV game since the mid-90s, and their r•pod is a more traditionally designed trailer compared to some of today’s newer manufacturers.

With tons of floorplans and optional upgrades, you can make this trailer as luxurious or basic as you’d like, and even with extras you can still keep the r•pod under 2,500 pounds.

Under 3,000 Pounds

13. jayco hummingbird.

jayco hummingbird

Dry weight: 2,535 lbs / Length: 18′ 10″

We are now officially in travel trailer country. Lighter campers can’t have everything, so there’s a delicate balance between form, function, space and features.

In this weight class, you’ll get just about everything you need while keeping your trailer under 20 feet. The Hummingbird might not have the cool factor that more modern, hip trailers have, but it’s a practical, well-built camper that’ll provide years of reliability on the road.

14. Airstream Basecamp

airstream basecamp

Dry weight: 2,585 lbs  / Length: 16′ 3″

Airstream’s departure from larger campers was named RVBusiness™ Magazine’s 2017 RV of the Year, and it’s opened up Airstream life to a brand new market. Though it’s still more expensive than comparable trailers, the Basecamp is more accessible than the brand’s larger signature models with its lower price tag and lighter base weight.

The smaller package doesn’t exclude much: a kitchen, bathroom, lounge area and sleeping space somehow all work together in this sub-17 foot trailer, and it feels surprisingly roomy for the square footage.

15. Lance 1475 Trailer

lance 1475

Dry weight: 2,600 lbs / Length: 19′ 8″

Like the Jayco Hummingbird, the Lance 1475 is a more traditionally designed travel trailer with an upgraded interior and plenty of room to relax.

The standard model is stacked, but options include better interior packages, a backup camera, solar panels and an all-weather package suited for more hardcore travels.

16. starcraft satellite.

starcraft satellite

Dry weight: 3,040 lbs / Length: 20′ 2″

In this weight range, you can expect 20-foot trailers that are still capable of being pulled with mid-sized and large SUVs. The GVWR of these trailers is typically in the 3,500 to 4,000 range, and the base weights of the three Satellite models range from 3,040 to 3,195 pounds.

The Satellite’s about as comfortable as they come at this weight and length, and owners are surprised by the condo-esque feel of the interior. With a TV, stereo, stellar heating and air conditioning, comfort and entertainment are top-notch here.

17. Little Guy Max

little guy max

Dry weight: 3,140 lbs / Length: 21′

The Little Guy Max is a larger version of the Mini Max, though it still retains the vintage charm of a teardrop trailer.

As usual, these guys make excellent use of the interior space, and touches like maple cabinetry and 58 cubic feet of storage make this feel more like home than most small campers. The entertainment features with the Max include exterior speakers and TV mount, 3-zone audio and bluetooth capabilities.

18. inTech RV Sol

sol trailer

Dry Weight: 3290 to 3375 lbs / Length: 19′

The largest of inTech’s models uses a unique “tilt-forward” design that makes use of the space above the trailer’s frame. It’s a bold move that gives the Sol its signature look and offers more square footage than campers that aren’t as structurally efficient.

The interior blows away nearly everything else at this size – you won’t be “roughing it” in the Sol, but that’s exactly what makes it one of the best small trailers under 3,500 pounds on the market.

19. Airstream Nest

airstream nest

Dry weight: 3,400 lbs / Length: 16′ 7″

Airstream acquired Nest Caravans in 2016 and immediately went to work improving the company’s sole trailer model. Today, the Nest is a popular alternative to Airstream’s bullet-style campers that have come to define the brand, though this little number sports the same quality and craftsmanship.

Two floorplans offer different seating and sleeping arrangements, but both have a kitchen, bathroom and sufficient storage for long road trips. It’s a high-end small camper, but for those with the budget, it’s hard to beat the unique styling and function of the Nest.

20. Oliver Legacy Elite

oliver legacy elite trailer

Dry weight: 3,400 lbs / Length: 18′ 5″

The biggest of our favorite small campers still clocks in under 3,500 pounds, though its GVWR is 5,000 pounds. The double-hulled fiberglass exterior is reminiscent of the Scamp and Casita, though it tends to have more upgraded features than its competition.

The “elite” in the trailer’s title means the standard options are ideal for most owners, but optional upgrades include a solar package, better power options and a wifi package to stay connected on the road.

13 of the Best Small Travel Trailers on the Market

Published on November 23rd, 2019 by Brian Newman

Life is full of limits, which is why the RV lifestyle is so appealing. It allows people from all walks of life to travel and explore. Just take a look at the parking lot of the Grand Canyon. You’ll see RVs of every type, length, weight, and manufacturer from every corner of the country. Many RV consumers have a desire to keep their more fuel-efficient vehicles, yet they still want a travel trailer that has all the amenities needed to take week-long trips. New construction materials are making RVs lighter, stronger, and more versatile. Features that exist in 30 plus foot coaches are now seen in trailers as small as 15 feet or less – small travel trailers.

The small RV category is unique unto itself. Big-name manufacturers compete with independent small companies. Many of the small companies create new technologies the big names haven’t even thought of yet. For our discussion, we will define small travel trailers by the following criteria:

  • They are self-contained- this means that all features are within the coach itself. Trailers that only have outdoor kitchens fall within another category.
  • The coach does not have an interior length of more than 23 feet in length. They may be a part of a series that have floorplans that exceed this length, but we will define this.
  • Dry weights will not exceed 3,500 pounds. We will focus our attention on those that are the lightest in weight. Some do go as high as 4,000, but this is an effect of materials used. Some of the trailers are a part of a series that extend out of the small travel trailer parameters. We will feature those models that fall within our small trailer limits.

Here are the 13 Best Small Travel Trailers on the Market

1. jayco hummingbird.

  • 12.11- 19.8 feet in length
  • 1,570- 3,095 pounds dry weight
  • 5 different floorplans
  • Sleep up to 4 people
  • $13,496- $27,290 MSRP

Jayco’s quality manufacturing is a benchmark in the industry. The Hummingbird line is a great introduction to the small and compact category. Each floorplan gives great examples of small trailer features. Yet their self-contained models also have full feature amenities as well.

The 17MBS is 19.9 feet in length and has a 3,095-pound dry weight. The front has a murphy bed that shares space with a sofa. This is a feature that many manufacturers use as a space saver. As a trade-off, Jayco gives you a separate toilet and shower instead of a combined wet bath for an amenity balance.

This particular coach is an off-road model with 15 inch Goodyear mud tires and a raised chassis. They seal the underbelly with a layer of Astro-Foil to protect it and as an insulator. Despite its size, there is still plenty of space for linens, wardrobe, and pantry items within.

The 17RK is the exact length and dry weight of the 17MBS but is very different. The front of the coach has a permanent queen-size bed. It has a driver-side slide out that with a U-shaped dinette and refrigerator/microwave. The kitchen counter takes up the entire width of the rear. The tradeoff is a combination wet bath.

As you can see, Jayco does a lot with the space. Even their compact trailer has its advantages. If you are looking to get into the small travel trailer RV lifestyle, Jayco is a great place to start.

2. Casita Travel Trailers

  • 16-17 feet in length
  • 1,970- 2,480 pounds dry weight
  • 5 different floorplans/models
  • Sleep up to 6 people
  • $17,225- $20,289

Casita is a family-owned business that started in 1983. Their coaches have many configurations you can choose from. Their products can travel off-road and off-season with enough room to fit everyone.

Casita designs their trailers based on two sizes. Their two-piece fiberglass shells come in either 16 feet or 17 feet. Each size then has a standard or deluxe package. The deluxe models offer an all-in-one toilet/shower wet bath and black water holding tank.

Standard packages use the wet bath area for added storage or sitting/sleeping space. This allows for more people to be comfortable. It also means you would have to rely on campground facilities for restrooms and showers. If your camping style is more off-grid, the deluxe package may fit your needs better.

Casita matches a floorplan with a model. This means that if you want the two- twin bed floorplan, you would choose the Independence model. Whichever model you choose, weight and pricing are the same. The manufacturer sets the price of their products.

  • The 16-foot standard dry weight is 1,970 pounds and is $17,225.
  • The 16-foot deluxe dry weight is 2,185 pounds and is $19,279.
  • The 17-foot standard dry weight is 2,210 pounds and is $18,320.
  • The 17-foot deluxe dry weight is 2,480 pounds and is $20,289.

3. Scamp Trailers

  • 13 to 16 feet in length
  • 1,200- 2,000 pounds dry weight
  • 7 different floorplans
  • Between $15,000- $20,000

The Scamp Travel Trailer – the iconic small travel trailers – has been a Minnesota manufacturer since 1972. Instead of mass production, each coach is built to the customer’s specifications. They can choose the size, layout, and interior features they want.

According to some owners, the building time took a matter of a few weeks. What they enjoyed the most out of the experience was the interactive experience. The manufacturer sent pictures and answered questions during the whole process.

Once completed, customers pick up their unit at Scamp’s headquarters in Backus, Minnesota. If the customer can’t get there, Scamp will go the extra mile to help their customers out. The company can deliver the RV to the customer anywhere in the continental United States.

Scamp has three sizes. The 13 and 16-foot models are small travel trailers, and the 19 is a fifth wheel . Each size has a standard and deluxe version. The 13 foot has two layouts, while the 16 foot has five. Some models have a combination toilet/shower wet baths, others do not.

Costs are unique to each trailer. Scamp does not publish their starting prices. Some owners have discussed their pricing on forums across the internet. Generally, these price points have come in between $15,000 to $20,000 depending on the model, package, and additional features they have chosen.

The 13-foot standard layouts give you either a sofa or a dinette upfront. The first layout gives you a sofa that can convert into a bunk bed. The second layout replaces the sofa for a wet bath and a second closet. In the deluxe version, the choice is between a dinette or a wet bath.

The features that stay constant are the rear dinettes that fold out to make the master bedroom. They also come with full kitchens that include sinks and small refrigerators.

Standard models offer a more basic approach to camping. Kitchens have a 1.9 cubic foot refrigerator as a part of additional packages. Many electronic features like TV hookups are optional. Customers that want to choose individual amenities may decide on these models.

Deluxe models have more of a complete package offering than the standard models. Bigger features and amenities are available. Many electronics like TV hookups, air conditioners, vinyl flooring, and other high-end features can be added.

4. Airstream Bambi

  • 16 to 22 feet in length
  • 3,000- 4,000 pounds dry weight
  • 4 different floorplans
  • Sleeps up to 4 people
  • $49,000 to $58,000

With the retirement of the Sport, Airstream further developed their Bambi series. This small coach gave the company the ability to join in on the small travel trailers market. It also stays within the weight capacities small coach campers are looking for.

It comes in a 16, 19, 20, and 22-foot floor plan. Each one has a fixed double bed, dinette, full kitchen, and bathroom. The 16-foot model has a combined wet bath, but the others have full bathrooms. Each dinette folds down to allow an additional two sleepers.

The Bambi is spacious for its size. Airstream uses light colors in the coach to keep the interior bright and enhance the open feel. They also keep to their European styling to give the unit a sophisticated look.

As expected, Airstream uses only the best when it comes to its amenities. The bed has a memory foam mattress. The entertainment system uses JBL sound equipment and an LED TV. There are also USB ports and LED lights throughout the RV itself.

Each coach has an optional solar panel system that can be factory installed. Otherwise, each one comes prewired for external solar panel setups.

5. KZ RV Escape

  • 18.10- 27.3 feet in length
  • 2,690- 3,820 pounds dry weight
  • 11 different floorplans
  • Sleep up to 10 people
  • $11,995- $29,300

The KZ Escape series is the most versatile series on our list. Within the 11 floorplans, seven of them fit into our definition of small travel trailers. Among them, there are hybrids, slideouts, and even a toy hauler that measure within 22 feet or less.

KZ designs this series with everybody in mind. Their one of the models caters to the off-road enthusiast. The E191BH sits higher and comes with 15-inch mud tires. It also has electronic-controlled heated holding tanks that help with off-season camping.

The E171MB has a unique storage feature. On the slide-out that holds the refrigerator is a storage space that has both an inside and outside access. It also has a queen-size murphy bed that shares its space with a sofa. The coach has a full bathroom and kitchen that completes the interior space.

The E171 MB is 19.8 feet in length and has a dry weight of 3,170 pounds. Your midsize-SUV won’t have any problems towing this coach.

6. Little Guy Travel Trailers

  • 17.2- 21.0 feet in length
  • 1,993- 3,140 pounds dry weight
  • 17 different floorplans
  • Sleep up to 3 people
  • $20,000- $30,000

Little Guy Trailer Company has reinvigorated the teardrop trailer for the 21st century. This RV maker has created a self-contained teardrop with modern conveniences. They keep with the tradition of the teardrop by keeping tow weights at car towing capacities.

Little Guy Mini Max is light enough to use your car/SUV crossover, yet gives you features of a full-size RV. The bright maple hardwood cabinetry contains a full kitchen. This also includes a category-leading four cubic foot fridge. Many RVs of this size don’t have refrigerators this large.

The Little Guy Max is four feet long and weighs in a little under 2,000 pounds. Many 21-foot trailers weigh more than this. One of the great features of this coach is the ability to hook up your small SUV as your tow vehicle.

The versatility of the dinette is quite special. Most fold down to a double bed. This one gives you the option of either two twin beds or a queen-size configuration. This works by having the dinette on a hydraulic and sliding bed slats that support the middle of the bed.

A lot of thought went into the wet bath of these coaches. Toilet paper covers are waterproof. The shower uses 2.2 gallons a minute to conserve water. The space allows a person to move around without knocking into the toilet while cleaning off.

RV Pro Magazine rated the Little Guy Max Best in Show for 2018 at the RVIA National RV Trade Show. The RV maker won for its nostalgic styling, modern features, and amount of storage for its size.

7. Forest River R-Pod

  • 18.4- 22.2 feet in length
  • 2,497- 3,600 pounds dry weight
  • 15 different floorplans
  • $14,500- $30,000

The Forest River R-Pod is celebrating its 10th year in production. Many of the features and amenities on this RV borrow from its big brothers and sisters. With 15 different floorplans to choose from, there is an R-Pod for everyone in this small category.

The 10th-anniversary package comes with many upgraded standard features. Furrion sound systems, solar charging ports, and seamless kitchen countertops are some. Other popular features include a pet-friendly frame-mounted utility hook for your dog.

Most of the floorplans have permanent queen-size beds. Other sleeping spaces include fold-down dinettes, bunk beds, and murphy beds. The R-Pod is a master of the ability to make the most of the space in its coach. This is why it has been so popular for so long.

Popular add-ons include a solar panel system with a 110-watt panel and a 1,000-watt inverter. Some models can have a factory built-in outdoor kitchen added as well. The R-Pod has a screen room that attaches to your awning to complete your outdoor space.

8. Homegrown Trailers- Timberline

  • 18.10 feet in length
  • 4,150- 4,350 pounds dry weight
  • Sleep up to 5 people
  • $50,000- $57,500

When tent camping does not work out for the whole family, most get into the RV lifestyle. The founder of Homegrown Trailers took that a step further. He and his team built a trailer out of sustainable materials in Kirkland, Washington.

The Timberline is an 18.10-foot travel trailer that uses green materials in its construction. Both the interior and exterior are made from wood paneling. Wool insulation creates a strong barrier against the outdoor temperatures.

The off-grid package has a 600-800 solar panel wattage to power all the electronic needs of the coach. The wet bath area gives you the option of a clean or composting toilet. For easy access, the grey water tank is external and simple to drain.

Everything about this coach is green and sustainable. They did not forget about styling and comfort. The aerodynamic shape is teardrop inspired to cut down on wind resistance. There is plenty of headroom and floorspace to allow up to five people to move around.

The coach has plenty of modern conveniences too. A full kitchen with a refrigerator allows meal preparation. Heat and air conditioning units are optional add-ons as well.

9. Oliver Travel Trailers

  • 18.5- 23.6 feet in length
  • 3,400- 4,600 pounds dry weight
  • 6 different floorplans
  • $48,900- $55,900

When you buy an Oliver Travel Trailer (a.k.a. “Ollie”), you become a member of the club. Oliver sells its trailers factory direct. They only build them per customer order. Once built, buyers pick up their trailers at the factory in Hohenwald, Tennessee.

Currently, Ollie makes the Elite I and II. The Elite I has two floorplans, and Elite II has four. The main bed is either permanent or a fold-down dinette. The third sleeping space is either a twin bed or two-seater dinette that folds down.

Ollies come with many standard features that compete with many big names in the RV world. What makes Ollie so unique are the many add-ons that others don’t offer. One surprising option is dual awnings. One for the door side, and another for the opposite side of the coach.

They also offer thought-provoking ideas. Specialized materials that clear away moisture from condensation areas. External storage baskets and receivers for bike racks. Propane water heaters and various electronic signal boosters. There are many other optional add-ons worth exploring.

Once a customer has worked with their sales representative, the order goes to the factory. Production time can take 8 to 10 weeks to build your RV. Once it’s ready, the customer comes to the factory and spends their first night in their new coach.

The buying process is as unique as the trailer itself.

10. Lance Trailer

  • 14- 25 feet in length
  • 2,600-5,875 pounds dry weight
  • 12 different floorplans
  • Sleep up to 7 people
  • $27,500- $66,400

Of the many big names that need mention, Lance is the unexpected winner. Their lineup offers nine models that are 22 feet or less in length. Only three of them have a dry weight under 4,000 pounds. They may be heavy, but their design is extraordinary.

In fact, one of their models, the Lance 2075 is the Best in Show award winner with RV Pro Magazine for 2020 . This model won due to its best technique of separating the bedroom area from the living room space. It has a queen-size bed in front and a U-shaped dinette in the rear that is on a slide-out.

The lightest model makes the best use of its 14 feet of interior space. It has a front sofa that folds out to a double bed. The rear has a full bathroom instead of a wet bath. It also includes a full kitchen.

Instead of trying to squeeze in a dinette, the designers placed two padded chairs with a small table. This allows the RVers to sit and relax in front of a big picture window. No matter how it’s used, there is still a feeling of spaciousness and relaxation.

If you look at Lance’s line up, all the models they have a focus on one point. Their small travel trailers give their users the most use of open space. The company wants its customers to have a relaxing experience, no matter the length of the RV.

11. Happier Camper

  • 10 feet in length
  • 1,100 pounds dry weight
  • Numerous different floorplans
  • $24,950 starting price

Have you ever looked around your RV and said to yourself, “I wish I had…?” If you owned an HC1 from Happier Camper, your response might be, “I have a box for that.”

This Los Angeles, California company has taken modular camping to the next level. The basis of the coach’s interior starts with 20-inch x 20-inch plastic boxes. Some are for storage. Others are more complicated. One can be the deluxe kitchen with pull out fridge, stove, and sink. Another could hold the wooden countertops for tables.

To configure the things you need, you place and stack the boxes according to what you need at the time. If you need to use the kitchen and dinette, you place the kitchen setup on top of storage boxes. The tabletop fits into the position between the seating.

At night, you place all the boxes on the same level and the sleeping pad over them. This gives you enough sleeping space for up to five people at night. With the large windows on three of the walls, there is plenty of cross breeze at night to keep things cool.

To add to the appeal, the designers gave their trailer a classic 1950’s nostalgic appeal. It comes in seven different colors you can choose from.

Additional options include a loading ramp to help you load your dirt bikes and other toys. A 100-watt solar panel and inverter. An elevated frame with off-road tires. To add space, they have a screen room that connects to the tailgate. You can also get a dry flush toilet.

With this weight and design, almost any vehicle can tow it. The honeycomb base and dual fiberglass shell are strong enough to hold anything. The Adaptiv components come in packages that add weight. With the components, you should assume around 2,000 pounds fully loaded.

12. inTech RV Sol

  • 16- 19 feet in length
  • 2,590- 3,375 pounds dry weight
  • 3 different floorplans
  • $24,890- $35,000

When most people think of small travel trailers, luxury isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. The designers at inTech have changed that type of thinking. Their line of Sol trailers has combined luxury, unique style, and small size in new ways.

The first thing you notice is the shape of their trailers. The tilt-front shape adds space without sacrificing aerodynamics. In the Dawn model, the front panoramic windshield allows those at the dinette to enjoy the view. The Eclipse places the kitchen upfront. This gives plenty of natural light while preparing meals.

The luxury-style amenities, regardless of model, give a high-class feel to the RV. The kitchen area has stainless steel amenities that include a 3.7 cubic foot refrigerator. The flooring is a woven vinyl that is a perfect combination of style and resilience to dirt and stains.

The dinettes in both models fold out into the bed in these coaches. In the Dawn, the measurements are 48 x 80. The Eclipse is 55 x 80. When you compare these to residential beds, you get the length of a queen.

The wet baths are very large in both models. Whichever model you choose, you will receive a real porcelain toilet. inTech made sure to give you plenty of room to take a standing shower and not feel claustrophobic. Their wet baths are the largest in their class.

13. Hymer Touring GT

  • 18.11 feet in length
  • 2,500 pounds dry weight
  • 1 American floorplan, 11 German floorplans
  • Sleeps up to 3 people
  • $18,995- $20,995

The appeal of European design has become a new trend in the United State in recent years. This has given consumers new form and function options. In the Class B motorhome category, European-based chassis have benefits never seen before.

Eriba RV decided to take this a step further. This past year, they decided to open a North American Division here in the United States. This German company introduced its Hymer Touring GT to America. While it may be new to the U.S., this coach dates back to the late 1950s.

The first unique feature of this coach is its expandable roof. Once opened, it gives almost a 6.4 feet height within the coach.

The current layout available in the United States has a king-size bed in the rear of the coach. This is unique since it’s truly rare for small travel trailers to have a permanent bed of this size. The front of the coach has a fold-down dinette that can accommodate an additional sleeper.

The cabinetry follows European style with its rounded fronts. This gives additional inches to each storage space. The faucet folds down into the sink and has a cover that folds on top of it. The two-burner gas stove also has a cover. This allows the added counter space for meal prep.

The bathroom is full-featured. It comes with a cassette toilet that has it’s own external bay for easy draining. The shower is big enough to clean up without banging your arms against the walls.

Another unique feature is their window and door screens. For the door, there is a hidden screen that pulls out from the side. Pull-down sunscreens and privacy shades act as screens as well. When you open the windows, the hatches act as hard-shell awnings to prevent rain and other weather from coming into the coach.

The Micro is available in five-floor plans. All but the smallest (12SRK) have a bathroom. Here is the 166FBS layout. As you can see the dry bath for this camper is located in the rear and includes a separate toilet and shower. Plus you get the added benefit of an outdoor shower as well.

In addition, the Jay Feather Micro includes residential-style kitchen countertops with a 3-burner cooktop. This floorplan also has a jackknife sofa and Jayco’s new patent-pending trays. There are many standard features we think you’ll like.

Optional packages add solar panel prep for off-grid camping and 13,000 BTU air conditioner. The Jay Feather Micro is an excellent camper.

13. Casita Liberty Deluxe

travel trailer under 18 feet

The Casita travel trailer is an all fiberglass construction camper available in 5-floor plans with each one having a standard and deluxe model. The fiberglass shell is a two-piece marine-grade shell. There is a top and bottom half that are sealed together with fiberglass.

What’s great about this method of construction is the roof has no seams, which makes this camper virtually waterproof, durable and, lightweight. The interior and exterior are both super easy to clean.

The frame is constructed of heavy-duty steel which improves underbody strength and helps in protecting the travel trailer from the road and rough terrain damage.

The Casita is available in 5-floor layout designs and each one has a standard version and a deluxe version. The major difference is the deluxe has a bathroom. It’s a wet bath which means the shower and toilet are in the same compartment.

14. Sylvan Sport Go Camper Trailer

Best Small Travel RV Trailers under 20 Feet

The Sylvan Sport Go is described by its manufacture as the “Swiss Army Knife” of small tent trailers. Not only that but National Geographic called the Go the “Coolest Camper Ever”.

There are many things that make the Sylvan Go cool and one of them is the ability to use the camper as a utility trailer to haul stuff, which makes it rather unique among small campers.

When used for camping the interior is spacious and the bed is wide and long. Many buyers rave about customer service from Sylvan as well.

This is a very capable tent camper that is comfortable on the road or off-road. When it comes to storage space you won’t find much but what is available is very useful. Note that there is no air conditioner on this camper.

The towing capacity of many small SUVs is well within the range to tow this camper. The pop up tent is easy to set-up.

When it comes to small trailers, Tammy and I really like the Sylvan Go. It gives you the outdoor camping experience but a lot more refined than just being in a tent. Check out their  website  for more information.

One of these RV Trailers would be an excellent choice. Keep in mind that you can often rent a RV Trailer through a partner service like RVezy to try out several options.

We own and operate multiple camping and RV Trailer site. Its our passion to see the world thru camping and traveling. There is no bigger pleasure for us then to share with you our readers our experience in RV Travels and Camping.

While it doesn’t have a built-in bathroom, it DOES have an outside shower. Here’s a peak at the floor plan:

Aliner Classic Floor Plans

It has an 11-gallon fresh water tank, which is plenty for a short weekend getaway!

Pro Tip: Don’t want to poop in the woods or gross public restrooms? Grab yourself a bathroom tent   and a portable toilet for some wonderful privacy.

Cricket Camper Trailer

If you’re looking for ultra lightweight travel trailers under 2000 pounds with a bad ass rugged look and feel, the Cricket Camper is for you.  It is especially convenient for those who like to take their travel “off road”.

Despite it’s (very small) size, there’s plenty of living space in this bad boy. Especially when you pop up the top. It’s like a teardrop camper but with more space!

Take a look:

Cricket Banner Dark

Unfortunately, like the A liner, Cricket Campers don’t come with a bathroom. You need a portable toilet and bathroom tent to get your privacy.

However, they do come with a built-in portable shower you can use to wash yourself off after an outing at a beach or lake. Additionally, there is plenty of interior and ceiling height for those who like the have plenty of space to stand and stretch!

Here’s the travel trailer layout, if you’re curious (sorry it’s small!):

Interior Design Timberleaf Teardrop

The  one downfall  this small travel trailer has?

There’s no bathroom attached to the trailer. You’d definitely need to purchase a portable toilet  and  bathroom tent to get your privacy (unless you’re a man – or woman – of the wild). It’s a great little teardrop camper!

Timberline

  • Dry Weight: 4,150 – 4,350 lbs
  • Length: 23′
  • Width: 7’11”

We have nothing but good things to say about Timberline trailers – they’re unique, solar powered, and are made with healthy, sustainable materials.

These small campers come with a wet bath (the average shit, shower, and shave model) and can sleep up to five people! Having a wet bath may not be ideal, but it’s better than not having a bathroom at all.

Take a look at the floor plan to get a better look at the inside of the Timberline trailer:

Interior Design Timberline

  • Dry Weight: 88 lbs
  • Length: 9’4″
  • Width: 3’2″

Guys… how freaking cute is this bicycle camper ?!

Bill and I about died when we first saw it – it’s unlike  anything  we’ve ever seen before! It’s the lightest-weight camping trailer on this list.

The sitting area transforms into a bed and there’s a nightstand attached for a small lamp (or to place your drinks/electronics). Imagine having such a unique camper that is easy to tow and makes for extremely lightweight travel . This camper can be taken almost anywhere on, and off road. As long as you’re willing to go there.

Take a look at the floor plan to get a better idea of what you’d be working with if you went with the bicycle camper:

floor plan for bicycle bike

  • Dry Weight: 1,260 lbs
  • Length: 12′
  • Width: 6’9″

The Terrapin camper from Casual Turtle can be built any way you’d like – which makes this camper a unique “true-to-you” model. The wood paneling and interior design of this model definitely make any camping experience unique.

Many people use these travel trailers for a quick trip to the lake or week-long getaways – but don’t let that stop you from pulling this sucker halfway around the country if that’s your goal! It’s easily the most unique camping trailer on this list.

Because the floor plan is made specifically for people interested in purchasing one of these models, we, unfortunately, don’t have one to show you.

We can, however, show you what it looks like on the inside of one that’s already built:

Terrapin Inside

Again, the interior layout is 100% customizable ! If you’re after a que en-sized RV bed, fair-sized master bedroom, and a nightstand, it’s yours!

If you’re after a pull-out couch and a dinette though? It’s yours (as long as the owners can make it for you, of course).

Wanderlust Vintage Camper

  • Dry Weight: 1200-1500 pounds
  • Fresh water tank: varies
  • Gray water tank: varies

Wanderlust Vintage Trailers is a company that takes vintage rigs, typically between 20-40 years old, and restores them to like-new condition with the help of each prospective owner.

Because they work with each owner individually, no two campers are the same! You can customize exactly what you want.

Little Guy Mini Max

  • Dry Weight: 1,993 pounds
  • Length: 17′ 2″

Like the TAB, the Little Guy Mini Max offers a well-designed, if small, space in a vintage-but-modern exterior. It’s slightly longer and heavier than the TAB, but the trade-off means you get more room and features.

I love the Little Guy Mini Max’s giant window setup. It lets in a ton of natural light, which is always nice to have when camping. It also comes with a wet bath, which is rare for a small trailer!

That said, it’s still small enough to be towed by nearly any tow vehicle. If your car can tow at least 2,500 pounds, it can tow this small trailer.

forest river wolf pup 18to

Dry Weight: 3,797 pounds Length: 23′ 2″ Width: 7′ Slideouts: 1 Fresh water tank: 26.00 gal. Gray water tank: 23.00 gal.

The Forest River Wolf Pup 18TO is the perfect tiny trailer for a family camping trip! This is one of the only small campers that has a slide out (which in turn, offers more sleeping space for guests).

With a queen size bed and all the amenities you’d need on a trip (such as a two burner stove, walk in shower, and plenty of storage space), we’d recommend this small camping trailer to anyone!

coleman lantern lt

Dry Weight: 3,587 pounds Length: 22′ 10″ Width: 9′ 9″ Slideouts: 0 Fresh water tank: 27 gal. Gray water tank: 28 gal.

When it comes to small camping trailers, it can be tough to find something that fits up to four people. But thanks to the Coleman Lantern LT, those days are in the past! This lightweight travel trailer may not have a lot of counter space, but it does have a murphy bed, bunk beds, decent storage space, a two burner stove, walk in shower, and more!

You’ll be blown away at how much interior space you have in this small trailer!

Have a question about small camper trailers? We’ve got you covered!

Note: If we didn’t answer your small camper trailer question below, make sure to leave a comment down below!

The Scamp Deluxe is the smallest trailer with a bathroom on our list, coming in at only 13′ long. It has a wet bath tucked inside the camper, so you won’t have to worry about using the park’s dirty bathrooms or finding a bathroom while boondocking .

The Terrapin Camper, Happier Camper, and Scamp Camper are the smallest camper trailers on our list, coming in at 13′ or less and weighing under 2,000 lbs!

This depends entirely on what you plan on doing and how you like to travel. If you don’t mind limited living and storage space and love having something that’s easy to tow, light on gas, and can go more places than bigger campers, a small travel trailer is absolutely worth it!

The lightest camper to tow is the Happier Camper, coming in at just 1,100 lbs! The Scamp trailer and Terrapin camper are also lightweight options, coming in at 1,200-1,500 lbs depending on the features you add.

Micro campers, or mini campers , go by many names. You’ve got the tiniest of campers, called teardrop trailers, that get their name for looking like a teardrop. But there are also small camping trailers, pop up campers , a-frame campers , and more.

And that brings us to the end of our list of the best small travel trailers! Whether you’re looking to go off road or just stay at an RV park, there’s something here for you!

I hope you had as much fun reading this as we did writing it! Let us know in the comments – did we miss any cool mini campers? Are you going to get one from this list?

25 Best Travel Trailers Under 20 Feet

Travel Trailers Under 20 Feet Cover

Sharing is caring!

Travel trailers under 20 feet are often the sweet spot of recreational vehicles. They’re best for those who don’t have kids and don’t have to go through the dreaded annual visits from the “in-laws.”

When it comes to a travel trailer under 20 feet, buyers want the most out of less. Since they are shorter, sub-20’ travel trailers often sacrifice certain amenities in the name of “smallness.” But you’d be surprised at what a little innovation can do in limited spaces.

A travel trailer under 20 feet also opens the door for more towing options since their lightweight allows prospective new owners to tow with smaller and even all-electric vehicles.

How are Travel Trailers Measured?

When travel trailers under 20 feet are measured, does it include the hitch? For a thorough answer to this question, check out our article called Does Travel Trailer Length Include the Hitch?

For the most part, travel trailers advertise on their exterior length, with height being a factor high on the list as well. In fact, the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association recommends that advertising reflects floorplan length in RV marketing.

1. nuCamp Tab 400

nucamp Tab 400 Travel Trailers Under 20 Feet

Our Pros and Cons

✅ Compact, aerodynamic, and easy to tow

⛔ It’s not constructed for extreme cold or extreme heat environments

  • UVW: 2,840 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,133 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 372 lbs
  • CCC: 293 lbs
  • Length: 18’ 3”

It takes a lot to make a teardrop camper into a camper you can stay in for more than a weekend, yet nuCamp has done just that with the Tab 400 . There’s a standard package and boondock package, the latter offering a more aggressive, off-road profile.

Either way, the Tab 400 offers enough sleeping space for three and features a wet bath and a full dinette that takes advantage of the large windows. The exterior galley features a two-burner stove top, kitchen sink, microwave, and fridge, with a ton of extra prep space.

2. Little Guy Mini Max

little guy max camper under 20 feet

✅ The galley is on the inside and fully loaded

⛔ Often a little difficult to shift from the driver’s side to the dinette bench

  • UVW: 1,993 lbs
  • GVWR: 2,900 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 280 lbs lbs
  • CCC: 907 lbs
  • Length: 17’ 2”

The Little Guy Mini Max went for the exterior, retro look while including all of the modern amenities and features a teardrop aficionado could want. It’s almost too big to be considered a teardrop, despite the immediately recognizable look.

The entire galley is inside, and it still features a wet bath, plenty of standing space, and a comfortable dinette. If you want to move the party outside, the exterior features plenty of accommodations for grills and a retractable, 6’ 3” awning.

3. The Meerkat

The Meerkat is a travel trailer under 20 feet long

✅ The Meerkat is so light you can tow it with almost anything

⛔ Bring additional jugs of water to accommodate your water needs

  • UVW: 900 lbs
  • GVWR: 2,000 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 100 lbs
  • CCC: 1,100 lbs
  • Length: 13’

The Meerkat prides itself on its ultra-lightweight factor while allowing room to stand up. It’s definitely tall enough, at least for most people. While the interior is not enough to maintain a full kitchen or a bath, you still get a single burner, sink, and a portapotty.

The Meerkat’s pop-top feature provides you with plenty of headroom. The interior also includes a U-dinette, which neatly converts into a full-size bed with a slide-out shelf. There’s also plenty of storage, and since the dry weight is so light, you can pack a bunch of outdoor toys in the Meerkat.

4. Forest River Wolf Pup 14CC

Forest River Wolf Pup 14CC is a camping trailer under 20 feet

✅ Includes a ton of windows for a spacious, well-lit aesthetic

⛔ Bathroom is split to save space

  • UVW: 2,884 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,900 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 400 lbs
  • CCC: 1,016 lbs
  • Length: 19’ 3”

Despite being the biggest travel trailer of the first four, the Forest River Wolf Pup 14CC is still incredibly lightweight, with a surprisingly spacious and well-lit interior. Though the bathroom is split in half to save space, this also enabled Forest River to include a full bathroom.

The queen-size bed has several storage options and feeds directly into the hallway, which runs down the center of the travel trailer to the exit on the opposite end. The galley features a dinette, a full range of kitchen appliances, and a drop-down TV easily viewable from the queen bed.

5. Lance 1475 Travel Trailer

Lance 1475 Travel Trailer is a camping trailer under twenty feet

✅ Unique blue and gray vibe that’s comfy and relaxing

⛔ Fridge location is at a 90° angle from the entryway

  • GVWR: 4,500 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 340 lbs
  • CCC: 1,616 lbs
  • Length: 19’ 8”

This Lance is loaded with a cool blue and gray vibe that begs you to sit down and relax. Depending on the floorplan you choose, you can replace the captain chairs with a sofa, but Lance’s decision to eliminate the dinette saves a ton of space.

The kitchen doubles as an entertainment room, with two captain chairs and a small central table. The aft corner of the 1475 features a dry bath opposite the refrigerator and exit, while the opposite side contains the Queen mattress and some overhead storage.

6. Winnebago Micro Minnie 1808FBS

Winnebago Micro Minnie 1808FBS is a travel trailer under 20 feet

✅ One of the most spacious layouts for a travel trailer under 20 feet on the market

⛔ No stovetop vent and the vent fan for the trailer is a bit small

  • UVW: 3,914 lbs
  • GVWR: 5,000 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 336 lbs
  • CCC: 1,086 lbs
  • Length: 20’

Winnebago decided to throw two axles onto the short body of the 1808FBS , and it’s a fantastic addition, balancing the weight nicely throughout. As for the travel trailer itself, it’s incredibly spacious and roomy for just 20’. The brochure says it sleeps three, but you could get away with more.

For boondocking, Winnebago supplies a 190-watt solar panel to keep your batteries topped off. With the single slide for the dinette and the high suspension, the 1808FBS will surprise you in terms of where it can go.

7. Forest River R-Pod RP-190

Forest River R-Pod RP-190 is a camper under 20 feet long

✅ The kitchen aesthetic is immaculate eye-candy

⛔ The lack of a Murphy’s bed makes for tight sleeping quarters

  • UVW: 2,960 lbs
  • GVWR:  3,788 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 307 lbs
  • CCC: 828 lbs

If you enjoy the space-age, titanium aesthetic that Forest River tends to embrace in some of its lines, you’ll love the R-Pod RP-190 . It’s challenging to mold a kitchen, dinette, bathroom, and bed layout in narrow trailers, but Forest River pulls it off with the R-Pod.

The dinette and a Queen Bed sit on opposite ends of the travel trailer, with a dry bath and galley on opposite sides of the width. A slide-out expands the kitchen in all its titanium-looking glory. The dual-burner is a nice addition though it does detract from the available counter space.

The Murphy Bed would have been a better, space-saving option, but there’s still plenty of space around the existing queen.

8. Prime Time Avenger 16RD

Prime Time Avenger 16RD exterior picture of a camper trailer under 20 feet

✅ Oversized pass-through storage beneath the bed

⛔ The central location of the bathroom may be off-putting for some

  • UVW: 2,939 lbs
  • GVWR:  3,890 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 390 lbs
  • CCC: 951 lbs
  • Length: 20’ 11”

The Prime Time Avenger 16RD is one of those jacks-of-all-trades, master of none travel trailers.

It does everything exceedingly well without blowing your socks off with some mind-numbing gimmick. It’s a highly reliable travel trailer, especially if you opt for the climate bundle.

The 16RD has an affinity for Blue LEDs which cover the exterior lighting, awning, and outlets throughout the RV.

It lends a unique ambiance and a relaxing atmosphere to the entire setup. The 16RD includes a full, dry bath, opposing beds (when you flip the dinette), and a robust kitchen area as well.

9. Highland Ridge Open Range Conventional 172FB

Highland Ridge Open Range Conventional 172FB floor plan

✅ Excellent living and sleeping space

⛔ No additional sink in the bathroom

  • UVW: 3,075 lbs
  • GVWR:  3,750 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 280 lbs
  • CCC: 675 lbs
  • Length: 19’ 3”

The whole idea behind the Conventional 172FB was to create a spacious environment with more sleeping room in a travel trailer under 20 feet long. Highland Ridge succeeded and even threw in some nice blue LEDs as well.

The kitchen area is one of the largest on our list, with Blue LED dials and an overhead microwave. There’s plenty of countertop space to work with, and there’s also a shower and toilet on the other side of the wall.

10. Airstream Basecamp 16

Airstream Basecamp 16 is easily under 20 feet long

✅ Multipurpose backdoor is incredibly convenient and versatile

⛔ Wet bath is all-metal, which may not appeal to some

  • UVW: 2,635 lbs
  • GVWR:  3,500 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 435 lbs
  • CCC: 865 lbs
  • Length: 16’ 3”

No list is complete without an iconic Airstream. The Airstream Basecamp 16 was too unique to ignore. The wraparound, deeply tinted windows give you a clear view of your surroundings. And, Airstream took the stainless steel look to a whole new level, bringing it inside and out.

The backdoor is one of the biggest highlights, with a large enough space to support mountain bikes, kayaks, or any additional gear you want to bring along. The Basecamp 16 was built like a mountain basecamp and will go nearly everywhere.

11. Venture RV Sonic Lite Ultra Lite SL150VRB

Venture RV Sonic Lite Ultra Lite SL150VRB is one of the best travel trailers under 20 feet long

✅ Sonic included a 34” stand-up shower with limited space (impressive)

⛔ Not enough windows

  • UVW: 3,180 lbs
  • GVWR:  3,885 lbs
  • CCC: 705 lbs
  • Length: 19’ 11”

Sonic is impressive in its ability to cram so much into such a tiny space. Their floorplans are prime examples of innovation under duress. The Ulta-Lite SL150RVB is one of their smallest options, yet it comes with everything you would expect to find in a travel trailer longer than 25’.

The 60” x 75” Murphy Bed was an outstanding choice for a space-saving design, and they even included a full, dry bath with a sizeable shower with plenty of elbow room. Kudos to Sonic for including pass-through storage as well.

12. Happier Camper HC1 Studio

Happier Camper HC1 Studio is one of the best fiberglass travel trailers under 20 feet

Our Pros and Cons

  • UVW: 1,800 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 180 lbs
  • CCC: 1,700 lbs
  • Length: 13’ 5”

If you could supply a definition for the word “cute” using only travel trailers, the Happier Camper HC1 Studio is the only one you would need. This adorable little camper features a modular interior (known as “Adaptiv”), meaning you can arrange a series of cubes to fill the space with a Queen bed or arrange it into a living room.

It’s hard to believe a camper this small would feature a full bathroom, but here we are. The dry flush toilet negates the need for a black water tank, and the modular shower simply moves outside when you’re ready.

13. Safari Condo R1713

Safari Condo R1713 is a teardrop camper under 20 feet long

Our Pros and Cons

✅ Crazy, cool, powered retractable roof design

  • UVW: 1,825 lbs
  • GVWR:  2,700 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: N/A
  • CCC: 875 lbs
  • Length: 17’ 3”

Alto seriously ups the “wow factor” with the Safari Condo Alto R1713. The press of a button raises the roof and creates a glass masterpiece of sunshine and airiness. Everything in the Alto is modular, and even the kitchen swings out of the way when needed.

The R1713 includes a full kitchen, toilet, and dining area, the latter of which converts in several different ways. Whether you want a dining area, a bed, a U-couch, a single bed, or a single sofa, the choice is entirely up to you.

14. Starcraft RV Super Lite Maxx 17BH

Starcraft RV Super Lite Maxx 17BH exterior

  • GVWR:  4,995 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 450
  • CCC: 1,310 lbs
  • Length: 20’ 7”

The Starcraft RV Super Lite Maxx 17BH was made for an extended stay, with large tank sizes, raised suspension, and off-road tires. It should be on your radar if you enjoy boondocking or staying off the grid from time to time.

It also features a full, dry bath and a ridiculous number of storage options. You’ll also enjoy the outside with the 12’ awning and a rear hookup for a propane grill or griddle.

15. Winnebago Hike H172BH

Winnebago Hike H172BH is under 20 feet long

✅ Large, spacious, L-floor design

⛔ The “roll-cage” framing is an off-putting aesthetic

  • UVW: 3,596 lbs
  • GVWR:  4,200 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 518
  • CCC: 604 lbs
  • Length: 20’ 7.5”

The Winnebago Hike H172BH is Winnebago’s attempt to address the needs of outdoor enthusiasts who need something small that can go anywhere. Boondocking is also covered with a 100-watt Go-Power! Solar panel.

The flooring is marine-grade, and the tanks feature heating pads for cold-weather camping. The exterior features a roll-cage shell designed for stacking mountain bikes, kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, or anything else you need for outdoor adventuring.

16. Jayco Jay Feather Micro 171BH

Jayco Jay Feather Micro 171BH is one of the best travel trailers under 20 feet

✅ Kitchen appliances (indoor and outdoor) are fantastic

⛔ Its a little short on the number of windows and could use a few more

  • UVW: 3,775 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 380
  • CCC: 1,220 lbs
  • Length: 20’ 2”

The kitchen is the stand-out feature of the Jayco Jay Feather Micro 171BH . The two-way refrigerator is a fan favorite, thanks to all the room it provides. The 171BH comes with a Blackstone Griddle for the exterior hook-up and is a fantastic addition.

The dry bath features a full tub, sink, and toilet, and they even managed to stuff some bunkbeds in the 171BH as well. With the convertible dinette, this Jayco can easily sleep five.

17. Ember Overland 170MBH

Ember Overland 170MBH is one of the best travel trailers under 20 feet

✅ Unique absence of a dinette with a convertible couch instead

⛔ Has a slightly cluttered feel

  • UVW: 4,190 lbs
  • GVWR: 5,495 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 650 lbs
  • CCC: 1,305 lbs
  • Length: 20’ 6”

Ember is rapidly evolving its smaller travel trailers in response to consumer demand. The latest result is what Ember calls their “generational” trailers, able to withstand sub-freezing and excessively hot temperatures.

The Ember Overland 171BH is designed to be the do-it-all boondocking machine, and it includes a 190-watt solar panel, while the advanced package comes with a 570-watt variation and a 3,000-watt inverter.

18. Grand Design AIM 18BH

Grand Design AIM 18BH is a travel trailer under 20 feet

✅ The bar tabletop dinette is fantastic and unique from similar models

⛔ When the bed is down, it partially blocks the entryway

  • UVW: 4,064 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,795 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 441 lbs
  • CCC: 731 lbs
  • Length: 21’ 11”

Where most travel trailers go with the dinette, Grand Design decided to go with a bar, and the result is an incredible aesthetic that offers a ton of additional counter space. The design of the Grand Design AIM 18BH leaves plenty of room behind the barstools, so nothing is lost with the addition.

The bunks and the queen bed are enough for four, but you could arrange for another couple of people inside. The exterior is a festival of features as well, with pass-through storage, Lp quick-connects, a griddle, a spray port, a 15’ awning, and a large baggage door.

19. KZ Sportsmen Classic 160RBT Hybrid

KZ Sportsmen Classic 160RBT Hybrid trailer under 20 feet

✅ Roof is Tufflex PVC and comes with a 12-year warranty

⛔ You have to be extra careful with opposing tent beds

  • UVW: 2,850 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,500 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 330 lbs
  • CCC: 650 lbs
  • Length: 19’ 2”

What do you do when you need a travel trailer less than 20 feet long with ample bed space and a roomy interior? Well, you go with the tried and true hybrid or expandable camper style. The KZ Sportsmen Classic 160RBT Hybrid did just that. They manufactured a travel trailer with pop-up tent beds on each end.

As a result, KZ was able to include a 72” bench seat, a large kitchen area, a full dry bath in the corner, and a booth dinette with a pantry. The outside features a 12’ awning and a trunk door for extra storage space as well.

20. Flagstaff E-Pro E19FBTH Toy Hauler

Flagstaff E-Pro E19FBTH Toy Hauler trailer under 20 feet long

✅ Designed to allow smaller hybrid and EV vehicles to pull it

⛔ When the bench seat is down, leg room is at a minimum

  • UVW: 3,433 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,931 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 581 lbs
  • CCC: 1,498 lbs

Lightweight for its size, the Flagstaff E-Pro E19FBTH is made for towing by vehicles that wouldn’t normally have any business pulling a travel trailer of this size. One thing is for sure, it’s lightweight and doesn’t affect the interior style and accommodations.

The Flagstaff features a massive bench seat near the entryway, right across from a residential-style stove and a kitchen that’s fully loaded. Thanks to the flip-up bench seat, there is plenty of room in the rear to drop the cargo door and load up your favorite toy.

21. inTech Flyer Discover

inTech Flyer Discover exterior

✅ Very large toy hauler space for a variety of “toys”

⛔ No bathroom

  • GVWR: 5,200  lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 525 lbs
  • CCC: 2,725 lbs
  • Length: 18’

The inTech Flyer Discover was made with a singular focus on toy hauling. Everything is a happy addition to that. There’s even a full kitchen and enough sleeping room for 4 to 6 people.

Once your toys are on the ground, you have a massive amount of space to work with inside. Since the kitchen is upfront, what you decide to do with the remaining space is up to you.

22. Oliver Legacy Elite

Oliver Legacy Elite is a high quality fiberglass trailer under 20 feet long

✅ Interior is narrow and incredibly efficient

⛔ There’s a distinct lack of cabinetry

  • UVW: 3,700 lbs
  • GVWR: 5,000  lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 370 lbs
  • CCC: 1,300 lbs
  • Length: 18’ 5”

The Oliver Legacy Elite has quite the built-in fanbase, and for good reason. The Oliver Legacy Elite is a well-made travel trailer, despite the company arriving on the scene in 2008. Despite the company’s youth, they’ve already put forward a couple of fantastic designs.

One thing is for sure, the Legacy Elite is made to go anywhere. They are manufactured in 6061 aircraft aluminum and molded fiberglass, all of which sit on Dexter Axles and E-rated truck tires. The interiors are fantastic as well, with a straightforward yet powerfully alluring aesthetic.

23. Casita Spirit Deluxe

Casita Spirit Deluxe exterior

✅ Deluxe model features a stand-up shower and toilet

⛔ Deluxe version cuts the sleeping capacity down

  • UVW: 2,480 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,000  lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 350 lbs
  • CCC: 520 lbs
  • Length: 17’

The Casita Spirit Deluxe is one of the comfiest models in this entire lineup. Even the walls are constructed of a soft, carpet-like material. The Deluxe version features a large bed, big enough for two, that flips up into a dinette.

It also comes with a standing shower and sink, along with a kitchen with all the bells and whistles. The storage space is surprisingly ample, with several storage options under the bed and the appliances throughout.

24. Scamp 19 Camper

Scamp 19 Camper is a 5th wheel trailer under 20 feet

✅ One of the longest-lasting builds in the industry

⛔ The wet bath obstructs ⅔ of the view from the sofa

  • UVW: 2,800 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,500  lbs
  • CCC: 700 lbs
  • Length: 19’

Scamp markets the Scamp 19 Camper as the “smallest fifth-wheel travel trailer in the USA.” Perhaps they’re right because it certainly is that. It’s also loaded with amenities. The queen bed sits in the loft, so the rest of the camper is living space.

Though this is a fifth wheel, don’t feel like you’ll need a modern tank to tow it. In fact, a quarter-ton Colorado can handle a Scamp 19.

25. Airstream Caravel 20FB

Airstream Caravel 20FB floor plan

✅ Spacious, all-aluminum interior aesthetic

⛔ The fridge drains the battery faster than comparable gas versions

  • UVW: 4,300 lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: N/A lbs

The Airstream Caravel 20FB is supposed to be the middle child of the Airstream lineup. Like any middle child, the 20FB wants to have it all because it gets the least attention. Fortunately, the 20FB has most, if not all the amenities you’ll find in a larger Airstream.

This includes a solid level of countertop real estate with all the kitchen amenities, a full dry bath, a bed with a 180° window view, and enough space to sleep four once you flip the dinette.

10 Best Lightweight Travel Trailers For 2023

' src=

  • RV Trailers and Motorhomes

The Rove Lite small travel trailer. (Image: travelliterv.com)[/caption]

Consider the GVWR (not the UVW)

Many RV manufacturers tout the UVW (unloaded vehicle weight) of their trailers. But adding cargo like fresh water, propane tank(s), food, clothing, bicycles, and other camping equipment to the trailer can add hundreds of pounds to that UVW number.

GVWR is the weight to know when buying a trailer for a lightweight truck or passenger car tow vehicle.

Knowing the GVWR of small campers is the key to safe towing on road or while off-the-grid camping. Now, let’s dive into our list of the best lightweight travel trailers for 2023.

The 10 Best Lightweight Travel Trailers (Under 6,000 Pounds GVWR)

Top 10 Budget Travel Trailers Under 20K (With Video)

Best Travel Trailers Under $20,000

Travel trailers are one of the most affordable RV classes you can buy, with only teardrop trailers and pop-up campers offering a lower average cost.

However, even though they’re one of the most affordable that doesn’t mean every travel trailer is budget-friendly.

As large luxury travel trailers can cost well over $100,000, as is the case with many Airstream trailers .

In general though, if you’re shopping for an RV on a budget, the standard travel trailer is going to be your best bet.

As even the cheapest versions provide a good amount of features and interior space.

And to prove this, we’ve compiled the below list, which highlights some of the most popular and best travel trailers under $20,000 .

  • Length : 22 Feet 2 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 3,663 Pounds
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 5,058 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity : 8

There are many things that make the Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH stand out from other budget-priced travel trailers.

However, probably the three biggest are its wide-body design, sleeping arrangements, and high sleeping capacity.

Starting with its wide body design, the Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH has a full eight-foot width as opposed to the more common seven-foot width found on most other smaller entry-level trailers.

Allowing the 197BH to offer class-leading interior space , despite its lack of slide-outs.

Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH Floorplan

After its wide body design, the next most distinguishing characteristic of this budget-friendly travel trailer has to be its sleeping arrangements.

Because not only is this camper a bunkhouse model with double bunk beds that can sleep two kids comfortably or two adults snugly, but it also has a front murphy bed as well.

Allowing the trailer to maximize its living space and sleeping space at the same time.

Because when the trailer is in its daytime mode, it offers not only a large dinette booth but also a comfortable couch as well.

While at the same time offering four separate sleeping berths, when the trailer is in nighttime mode.

Including the previously mentioned double bunk beds and convertible dinette booth, as well as a north-to-south queen murphy bed.

Which when combined provide one of the highest sleeping capacities available in a budget-friendly entry-level travel trailer .

8. Forest River Salem FSX 179DBK

  • Average Cost : $18,500
  • Length : 22 Feet 6 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 3,219 Pounds
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 4,865 Pounds

Another bunkhouse model that has a very similar layout to the above Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH is the Forest River Salem FSX 179DBK.

In fact, these two travel trailers have pretty much the exact same floor plan.

Featuring a front murphy bed, a camp side dinette booth, a full-featured galley, a corner three-piece dry bath, and double rear bunk beds.

Forest River Salem FSX 179DBK Floorplan

Forest River Salem FSX 179DBK Floorplan

A few key differences set these two very similar campers apart, though.

For example, the Salem FSX 179DBK offers an outdoor kitchen, while the Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH does not.

In addition, the Salem FSX 179DBK also offers several upgraded features that the Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH doesn’t, including larger panoramic windows and a higher BTU furnace.

As well as a larger 11 cubic foot 12V refrigerator, an outside shower, and upgraded appliances when equipped with the Best-In-Class package.

In fairness though, the Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH also offers a few upgraded features that the Salem FSX 179DBK doesn’t.

Including a frosted glass window in the entry door, extra comfortable Teddy Bear bunk mats for the bunk beds, and an upgraded furniture package.

For more information on the Forest River Salem FSX 179DBK and to see a 3D tour of the interior, check out Forest River’s website by clicking here .

9. Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU

  • Length : 19 Feet 9 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 3,250 Pounds
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 3,880 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity : 2

Coming in at just under $20,000, the Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU makes a great compact lightweight camper for couples.

As the Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU offers comfortable sleeping for two, thanks to its full-size front murphy bed.

As well as a comfortable place to hang out in the evening, thanks to its front oversized u-shaped dinette booth and opposing large entertainment center.

Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU Floorplan

Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU Floorplan

And because this camper is able to focus more on comfort and less on sleeping capacity, it’s able to offer features not usually found on sub-20-foot trailers.

Starting with the trailer’s large rear bathroom, which takes up the entire back wall of the camper and offers a large vanity with sink and medicine cabinet, a stand-alone separate toilet, and a 24-inch by 36-inch shower.

And finishing with the trailer’s extensive kitchen, which utilizes both sides of the trailer, and includes a 7 cubic foot gas/electric refrigerator, a two-burner cooktop, a microwave, a large pantry, and plenty of upper and lower cabinetry.

For more information on the Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU, be sure to check out Coachmen’s website by clicking here .

10. Forest River Viking 182DBU

  • Length : 22 Feet 3 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 3,840 Pounds
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 4,433 Pounds

Also coming in at just under $20,000, the Forest River Viking 182DBU, formerly known as the Coachmen Viking 182DBU, and part of Forest River’s 4K Series shares many similarities with the above Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite.

And that’s for good reason; as the Viking, and the Clipper are actually sister RVs.

In addition, they’re also both produced by Forest River, as Forest River owns and produces all Coachmen RVs.

Despite being sister RVs though, there are quite a few differences between the Forest River Viking 182DBU and the above Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU.

Which has a lot to do with the intended end user of each RV.

Forest River Viking 182DBU Floorplan

Forest River Viking 182DBU Floorplan

Because while the above Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU is intended for couples, the Viking 182DBU is intended for families of four.

To see other travel trailers designed for families of four, check out our blog post “ 12 Best Small Travel Trailers for a Family of 4 “.

And as such, the Viking 182DBU has a lot more family-friendly features compared to the Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU.

Including a four-person sleeping capacity, bunk beds, more interior and floor space, and more storage capacity both on the interior as well as on the exterior.

For more information on the Forest River Viking 182DBU, and to see a 3D tour of the interior, check out Forest River’s website by clicking here .

Photo of author

In this article, I will show you what we consider to be the best options on the market today for the best bunkhouse travel trailer under 25 feet from different manufacturers and with very different floorplans. We also include a couple of options for bunkhouse travel trailers under 20 feet. Let’s see the 10 Best travel trailers with bunks under 20 and 25 feet for 2022 with specs, floorplans, 360-tours, owners’ reviews, and walk-through videos. This video below is just a sneak peek of some top picks featured in this buyer’s review.

Table of Contents

Why Choose a Bunkhouse Travel Trailer Under 25 Feet?

Why Choose a Travel Trailer?  Travel trailers are a very advantageous type of recreational vehicle because of their versatility. When it comes to travel trailers, there are an infinite number of floorplans, lengths, weights, load capacities, etc.

Why Choose a Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?   Travel trailers with bunks are a great way to share memorable moments with our families and friends.

Bunkhouse travel trailers are less expensive and give additional sleeping space. A bunk room in a travel trailer may provide adaptability as well as sleeping space. Bunk bed campers are ideal for families and large groups. It is quite handy to accommodate all family members and visitors without having to assemble and disassemble beds, sofas, dinettes, and so on. You may relax on the bunk beds anytime you like so that the areas can be utilized during the day. Furthermore, bunk beds for RVs are the handiest and most comfortable beds available. I’m willing to bet that current RV manufacturers provide comfortable bunk beds, even double sizes, with storage and USB hookups.

Why Choose a Bunkhouse Travel Trailer Under 25 Feet?  The biggest advantage of choosing a short travel trailer, under 25, or under 20-30 feet , is that it is easier to drive and maneuver to park and sightsee the cities during vacation time. A bunkhouse also conserves weight and space, enabling several people to sleep and rest in a relatively small area. Aside from that, kids adore bunk beds.

Check out below our list of the 10 best bunkhouse travel trailers under 25 feet with specs, floorplans, 360-tours, and walk-through videos. Also, I took the liberty to include travel trailers with bunks under 20 feet in the top 10 list.
