The Zambia Tourism Agency (ZTA) is a Statutory Body established under the Tourism and Hospitality Act No. 13 of 2015. The Act mandates the Zambia Tourism Agency to effectively market and promote Zambia as a tourism and travel destination of choice and to regulate the tourism industry.

The Zambia Tourism Agency wishes to invite suitably qualified and experienced Zambian nationals to fill the following positions:

1. CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO) – 1 POSITION

Reporting to the Board Chairperson, the Chief Executive Officer is responsible for overseeing the marketing of Zambia as a tourist destination of choice and the regulation of the tourism and hospitality industry in order to increase tourist arrivals, earnings and promote competitiveness in the industry.

Principle Accountabilities:

• Oversees effectively the marketing and promoting of Zambia’s tourism products in order to facilitate increase in arrivals.
• Oversees regularly the licensing of tourism enterprises in order to ensure compliance to statutory requirements
• Oversees periodically the development and review of Tourism and Hospitality Standards in order to make Zambia a more competitive destination
• Oversees effectively corporate communication activities in order to build and maintain a positive image for the Institution.
• Oversees effectively the procurement and supply of goods, services and works in order to facilitate their availability, storage and distribution
• Oversees effectively the monitoring and evaluation of marketing, standards and licensing programmes in order to facilitate decision making
• Ensures effectively the implementation of performance management in order to monitor, evaluate and enhance performance
• Ensures effectively management of human, financial and other resources in order to facilitate achievement of set objectives

Qualifications, Experience and Personal attributes

• Full Form V/Grade 12 School Certificate
• BA in Social Sciences or equivalent
• Master’s Degree in Marketing Management or equivalent
• 15 years’ work experience, 6 of which must be at senior management level
• Able to write technical and analytical reports
• Able to communicate effectively in English
• Computer literate
• Analytical skills
• Interpersonal skills
• Confidentiality

Zambia has significant potential for tourism and offers a wealth of natural tourism assets.  Attractions include Victoria Falls - one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO Heritage site – abundant lakes and rivers, and wildlife-protected areas in the form of 20 national parks and 34 game management areas that together occupy some 10 percent of the country’s total land area.  Zambia is also endowed with a rich and diverse culture that enjoys more than 30 colorful traditional ceremonies annually.  However, this sector continues to underperform and remains underutilized, and thus creating opportunities for improvement.  Ecotourism is still under-exploited in Zambia, but with its abundant nature and wilderness, it offers potential investment opportunities.  The COVID-19 global pandemic significantly disrupted international tourism arrivals and has severely impacted the sector, though there will be opportunities for re-investment when widespread international travel resumes.

Opportunities

There are opportunities in tourism services and infrastructure.  Zambia lacks adequate hotel room capacity in key tourist destinations and in copper-producing regions.  Other opportunities include safaris, canoeing, game drives, nature walks, bungee jumping, microlight flights, sport fishing, rock climbing, and orienteering.

Local tourism associations estimate that the COVID-19 pandemic reduced sector revenue by some $300 million in 2020.  International visitors in 2019 spent $849 million, representing ten percent of the country’s total exports.  During the same period, the sector contributed seven percent of gross domestic product ($1.7 billion) and 7.2 percent of total employment.  Businesses in this sector have identified creative ways to stay open and reduced prices to entice domestic tourists during the pandemic, but many have expressed concerns that they may have to sell assets if the environment does not improve.  As such, additional investment opportunities may be available before regular travel resumes.

Requirements and Skills

Demonstrate a strong ‘Can Do’ attitude, strong will to win and no room for failure. Ability to package bespoke local and international tour packages Proven working experience as a Travel Consultant Excellent knowledge of traveling software (computer reservations systems, GDS systems and e-travel – Galileo) Proficiency in English; knowledge of additional languages is an advantage Exemplary sales skills and customer-oriented approach Well versed in various areas of travel (domestic/international, business/holidays, group/individual etc) Ability to present, persuade and communicate effectively even at large corporate level Demonstrable ability to handle crises Certification in Travel and Tourism
