Compass Cards & Products

Compass Mini-Train keychains held in front of SkyTrain on station platform

Compass Cards are convenient, reloadable fare cards that can be used when taking transit within Metro Vancouver. Compass Cards can be loaded with Stored Value, or with prepaid passes (such as Monthly and DayPasses).

How Compass Card Works

Tap your card on the reader when entering buses, HandyDART, and at the gates when entering and exiting SkyTrain stations or SeaBus terminals.

The fare is automatically deducted from the stored value on your card.

Monthly Pass and DayPass riders tap in to validate their prepaid journey.

You cannot pay for two fares on the same journey with one card — each rider needs their own form of payment. You can use the Stored Value on your Compass Card to purchase a Compass Ticket for another rider at a Compass Vending Machine (CVM).

Concession Compass Cards

Concession Compass Cards are available for:

HandyCard holders

seniors 65+

youth 13 to 18 years *

*Must present valid photo ID proving age (government issued ID or secondary school ID)

Children aged 12 and under can ride TransLink services free of charge. Learn more on the Fare Pricing and Zones  page.

Monthly Passes

Monthly Passes provide unlimited travel on SkyTrain and SeaBus within the number of zones purchased, plus unlimited travel on buses at any time, and across all zones on all modes on weekends, statutory holidays, and after 6:30 p.m. on weekday evenings.

You can purchase and tap up to the 15th of the month to activate a pass for the current month. Passes purchased after the 15th are eligible for next month’s use.

Passes are sold for 1-, 2-, or 3-Zone travel. Passes for West Coast Express  must be purchased separately as they are priced differently.

Buying a Monthly Pass

To purchase a Monthly Pass, you need to have a Compass Card. Monthly Passes are transferrable and valid for the calendar month in which they are activated. Visit our Where to Buy page  for information on where to get a Compass Card.

You can pre-purchase your next month's pass online, at a Compass Vending Machine, by phone or in person starting on the 20th of each month until the 15th of the next. You can purchase a Monthly Pass at any time online . Your credit card will be charged at the time of purchase, and passes are activated the first time you tap during the period for which your pass is valid (typically on the first of the month).

Fare Upgrades

If you have a 1- or 2-Zone Monthly Pass on your Compass Card, but need to travel through extra zones on rail or SeaBus, just load Stored Value onto your Compass Card in advance of your trip and your upgrades will be seamless. Compass will deduct the correct amount for your trip when you tap out. Visit our Transferring and AddFare page for more information.

Tickets and DayPasses

For single trips or a visit to Vancouver for the day, a Compass Ticket (single-use ticket) or DayPass is likely the best option for you. Compass Tickets and DayPasses purchased at a Compass Vending Machine (CVM) can only be used on the day they’re purchased. DayPasses purchased at a Compass Retailer can be used for future travel.

Tip: If you are buying one single adult ticket, you can save time and go paperless by tapping your contactless debit, credit card, or mobile wallet right at the SkyTrain fare gate or bus and West Coast Express card reader to ride. To learn more, please visit Pricing and Fare Zones page.

If you’re travelling with a large group (e.g., field trips), group discounts apply to purchases of 50 or more tickets. Learn more about our Group Travel Program.

Compass Tickets

With a Compass Ticket you can transfer between bus, SeaBus, HandyDART, and SkyTrain services as many times as you need in the number of zones purchased for up to 90 minutes. Compass Tickets are valid from the time of purchase until 4 a.m. the next day regardless of use.

Your fare must cover all the zones of your trip. Check the Fare Zones ahead of purchase.

Find out where to buy tickets .

Tip: If you are buying one single adult ticket you don’t need to print a ticket. Save time by tapping your debit, credit card, or mobile wallet right at the SkyTrain fare gate or bus and West Coast Express card reader to ride. Learn more at Pricing and Fare Zones page .

A DayPass provides unlimited transit use on all buses, SkyTrains, SeaBuses, and HandyDART for one full day from the start of the first transit service until 4 a.m. the following day. You can use it for travel through all zones, and save money over buying single fares when you take multiple trips in the same day.

There are two ways to purchase a DayPass:

Load a DayPass onto your Compass Card (can be done at a Compass Vending Machine or online at compasscard.ca ). These can be used the same day or on a future day.

Buy a Compass DayPass Ticket (a single-use paper ticket, available at Compass Vending Machines (CVMs). These must be used the same day of purchase.

Compass Wristbands and Wearables

Available for purchase at the TransLink Customer Service Centre at Waterfront Station.

Compass Wearables FAQ

How do the wristbands and minis work.

Just like a Compass Card. Tap in and out when travelling on transit and reload online, at a Compass Vending Machine, by phone or in person. Just like a Compass Card, you’ll pay a $6 refundable fee when you pick up your wristband and/or mini. Remember to tap the part of the wristband that displays the contactless symbol. For minis hold it flat against the card reader. Hold both products against the reader until you hear a beep and see a check mark to proceed.

Why are wearables only available at the TransLink Customer Service Centre?

We have to encode them with a special machine before they're used for the first time and this can only be done at our customer-service centre in Vancouver.

I have a BC Bus Pass/U-Pass BC/other program pass, can I use the Compass Wristband or Mini?

Minis and wristbands work just like Adult and Concession Compass Cards, which means you can load a U-Pass BC onto a blue adult wristband or Compass Mini. At this time, only U-Pass BC program cards can be loaded onto a Compass Wristband and Mini.

I have a small/large wrist, will the wristband fit?

The wristbands are adjustable and can accommodate small and large wrists.

Can I transfer my Compass products to a wearable?

Yes, but this can only be done at one of our customer service centres, because we need to encode the wearable before use.

Are there any other wearable Compass products coming?

We don’t have anything planned at this time. However, we’re always monitoring the availability of new products.

How do I register my new wearable?

Like a Compass Card, you can register your wearable online which gives you balance protection and the option to sign up for other features like AutoLoad or our Bike Parkade program.

Can I register the wearable and set up AutoLoad?

Just like Compass Card, you can register and sign up for AutoLoad online. This will provide you with balance protection, in case you lose your wristband or mini.

HandyCard allows for travel at concession fare prices on transit and provides free travel for an assistant or caregiver. HandyCards only provide for concession fares on conventional transit and can't be used for concession fares on HandyDART.

Use an orange Concession Compass Card to pay for travel on bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express. Be sure to carry your HandyCard with you as proof of concession fare eligibility.

Tap your Concession Compass Card card on the reader when entering or exiting SkyTrain stations, SeaBus terminals, and West Coast Express stations, and at the start of your bus journey. You do not need to tap out on the bus.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for a HandyCard, you must:

be 12 or older

have a permanent disability that keeps you from using public transit without assistance

live within TransLink’s service region

Converting FareSavers to Stored Value

If you have leftover FareSavers, you can keep using them on the bus or convert them to Stored Value on a Compass Card. To convert FareSavers to Stored Value on a Compass Card, visit the TransLink Customer Service Centre  at Waterfront Station. The amount that is converted is the amount that was paid for the FareSavers, not the face value of the tickets. For instance, if the book of FareSavers cost you $21, the conversation is based on $2.10 per ticket.

Please note that FareSavers distributed at no cost as part of a program can only be converted to Compass Tickets.

Compass Vending Machine Errors

If a Compass Vending Machine (CVM) issues a receipt indicating that an amount to be refunded was not returned, a product was not dispensed, or another error occurred, a refund will be issued upon presentation of the receipt.

If no receipt is issued by the CVM, the request for a refund must include:

The station name where the malfunction occurred.

The five-digit CVM number (located on the front of the CVM).

The amount, date, and approximate time of the attempted transaction.

TransLink will verify the error and once the error is verified, will issue a refund, in-kind fare product, or adjust the Stored Value balance on a Compass Card.

Requests related to a CVM errors must be made within 60 days of the error.

Requests for refunds must be made by submitting the above-noted information to Compass Customer Service or submitted in person at TransLink Customer Service Centre  at Waterfront Station.

Transport and getting around

A bus and students on our Stag Hill campus

As a Surrey student, you’ll enjoy all the benefits of being within walking distance of Guildford town centre’s shops, parks, restaurants, pubs and clubs. With a great network of bus and rail services nearby, and a good cycling infrastructure, the vast majority of students find they have no need for a car.

There are regular  bus services  between Manor Park, Stag Hill and Guildford town centre between the hours of 6am and midnight. From the town centre, there are also plenty of services covering other areas around Guildford.

For discounted student travel, you can order a variety of different  Stagecoach student cards online . It costs just 75p per day and gives you unlimited travel throughout Guildford. Both tickets represent fantastic value for money, with a saving of more than £600 on the cost of buying the annual ticket directly from the bus company.

As well as standard journeys, your travelcard will also cover the University night-bus service. This operates six nights a week between the town centre, Stag Hill and Manor Park.

The new Hazel Farm shuttle service will operate Monday to Friday. View the timetable and stops online .

To access this service, students should follow these simple steps:

  • Download the Zeelo app on the App Store or Google Play
  • Search for ‘The University of Surrey’ and press ‘Get a pass’
  • Choose the ride bundle you want to purchase
  • Continue to payment and set up your Zeelo account - there are plenty of payment options available
  • View the timetable and find a service that suits you
  • Go to ‘My Rides’ to access your boarding pass
  • Show your pass/QR code to the driver when you board a service.

The University is a short walk from Guildford railway station which has great connections to London and the South East.

Students are eligible to apply for a  16–25 Railcard  to gain discounted travel on mainline services, and an  18+ Student Oyster photocard  for cheaper travel within London.

You can find out more about how South Western Railway are keeping you safe on their  website .

Cycling – both around campus and into Guildford – is very easy and the transport of choice for many students.

Bike storage on campus

The University campus has plenty of cycle racks, including one in each court of residence. Some racks are lockable with a key that you can borrow.

Bike storage in Guildford

In Guildford, there are cycle racks at the railway station and around the town centre, close to the shops.

There are very limited spaces and therefore, car parking is not available at the University for most students.

Parking permits

For more information about eligibility and applying for a permit, visit our dedicated parking page . Please be aware that the issue of a permit does not guarantee a space – there are no permit refunds if the car park is full.

Updated travel information for Mexican citizens coming to Canada

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

News release

Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years. We have worked to ensure North America is the world’s most competitive economic region and maintain strong bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation. To support travel and people-to-people connections between Canada and Mexico, while also preserving the integrity of our immigration system, the Government of Canada is adjusting its travel requirements for Mexican citizens.

February 29, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – Ottawa – Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years.

As of February 29, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time, Mexican citizens who hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years and are travelling by air on a Mexican passport will be able to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA). With the high number of Mexican citizens currently holding US visas, the majority will continue to enjoy visa-free travel to Canada. Those who do not meet these conditions will need to apply for a Canadian visitor visa. This responds to an increase in asylum claims made by Mexican citizens that are refused, withdrawn or abandoned. It is an important step to preserve mobility for hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens, while also ensuring the sound management of our immigration and asylum systems.

The application process for Mexican citizens seeking a work or study permit will not change. Mexican citizens who want to work in Canada will continue to have access to a wide number of existing labour pathways, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program.

Canada supports ongoing travel, tourism and business with Mexico. We will continue to work with the Government of Mexico to strengthen our regular pathways to immigration, and with our provincial and territorial counterparts to support a system of managed migration as well as to support those in need of protection. Canada is expanding its network of visa application centres in Mexico to better serve these clients. Today’s action will relieve pressure on Canada’s borders, immigration system, housing and social services, while preserving mobility for Mexican citizens who want to come to Canada.

The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) is a vital example of the mutually beneficial migration that we seek to promote regionally and globally. Canada is ready to work with Mexico to build on this program, through the modernization of a new SAWP bilateral agreement, to offer Mexican workers new opportunities, through the incorporation of year-round primary agriculture and seasonal fish, seafood and primary food processing into the program. This will benefit workers and businesses on both sides of the Canada–Mexico relationship.

Canada is continuously monitoring the impacts of its visa policies for both visa-exempt and visa-required countries, as well as asylum claim trends. These challenges are not limited to one country. Any adjustment to Canada’s travel requirements are made to preserve the integrity and sustainability of our asylum and immigration systems.

More information about these changes, including for people in transit or with upcoming flights, is available on IRCC’s website .

“Mexico is an important partner to Canada. We will continue to welcome Mexican temporary workers, students, visitors and immigrants who bring diverse skills and important contributions to our economy and communities. We strive for balance between the movement of people between our two great countries, and the need to relieve pressure on our immigration system so we can provide protection to those who need it the most.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts

Asylum claims made by Mexican citizens reached a record high in 2023 at a time when Canada’s asylum system, housing and social services were already under significant pressure. The majority of these claims (approximately 60%) were either rejected by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, or withdrawn or abandoned by the applicant.

In 2023 alone, asylum claims from Mexican citizens accounted for 17% of all claims made that year from all nationalities around the world. The country’s asylum claim rate has risen significantly since the visa was first lifted in 2016 (from 260 claims in 2016 to 23,995 claims in 2023).

All eTAs issued to Mexican passports before 11:30 p.m. Eastern time on February 29, 2024, will no longer be valid—except for eTAs linked to Mexican passports with a valid Canadian work or study permit. Mexican citizens travelling to Canada without a valid work or study permit will need to apply for a visitor visa or reapply for a new eTA —if they are eligible.

Mexican citizens holding a valid work or study permit can still travel by air to Canada with their existing eTA as long as it remains valid, and they can continue to study or work in Canada based on the validity and conditions of their permit. Mexican visitors who are already in Canada on an eTA can stay for as long as they are authorized (up to six months from the date they arrive in Canada). However, if they plan to leave Canada and wish to return, they must have the proper travel documents (visa or new eTA).

Most approved visa applicants receive multiple-entry visas, which allow them to visit Canada as many times as they want, for up to 10 years, or until their passport expires.

The eTA is a digital travel document that most visa-exempt travellers need in order to travel to or transit through Canada by air. IRCC first began expanding its eTA program to eligible citizens from visa-required countries in 2017. Mexico will now be among 15 countries whose citizens can to fly to Canada on an eTA, instead of a visa, if they meet certain requirements .
