The Catholic Travel Guide
Catholic Shrines & Places of Interest in Italy
Italy is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe and, of course, home to many places of interest to Catholics. There is a certain mystique to Italy that beckons people from all over the world to its fertile valleys and bustling, yet ancient, cities. In addition to the obvious location of Rome, here are just a few of the hundreds of places that are popular. The number of saints that Italy has produced is so numerous that many people have never heard of some of them. And many towns and cities have annual festivals to honor their saints. You could spend a lifetime in Italy and probably not come close to seeing everything the country has to offer.
In addition to many beautiful churches you will find many Eucharistic Miracles , holy sites such as the Holy House of Loreto, and other reminders of how much Catholic history there is in this country.

We just returned from our pilgrimage to Rome and custom Assisi itinerary. It was an Awe-some Pilgrimage. We were able to explore our Catholic roots, see and listen to the Pope in St. Peter’s Square, celebrate mass in the most beautiful and holy places. Assisi was the highlight and to spend time in the Sanctuary of Eremo Delle Carceri was a very moving experience. The planning and customer care with you was great and comforting for Merle and I who have not travelled to Europe before. Our guide, Daniele was Exceptional!!! His knowledge, presentation, presence, humor and humor was invaluable to us. I highly recommend him. Our guide in Assisi was also exceptional. It was all such a wonderful experience on this pilgrimage to Italy. Thank you!
Our Italy Pilgrimage to Rome including Great Shrines of Italy was great. Catholic Journeys made it easy to plan this trip from payment and laying out the itinerary. The guides were very knowledgeable and pleasant to be with. Thanks!
Fr. Patrick Hirtz
The weather was great for our pilgrimage to Italy – only two evenings with rain. We had a great time with our group. Francesco was beyond our expectations as a guide. His love of faith and country were very much felt. As the time went on, we felt as one family with him. We stopped many times on the way between hotels to places he shared with us. From a small chapel outside of Assisi, where the brothers first came together to pray and view points of the countryside and towns.
The Hotels were fabulous and great locations. Star Hotel Michalangelo was a great location and the staff was very good. Especially, with help getting the late luggage to the rooms. Hotel Cenacolo in Assisi was great, the staff was attentive to all our needs. The Server, Christine, was beyond helpful, she brought and had ready the gluten free food for the two in our group. She helped in any need. Hotel Cellai was a great hotel with much history and antique decor. Finding the room was a challenge, but once found everything was good. The food next door was great and a full Italian meal. The staff had breakfast available for the early departure to the airport.
I am still taking in the experience of all the Shrines and blessings received during the trip. I will share after I begin to journal. The group is already looking forward to next year’s pilgrimage. Maybe France or Greece will be our options. One thing they asked is that Francesco could be our guide again, showing how much his presence was felt. (Maybe his wife will join us). I will share pictures with you after we set up the group drop box and Facebook.
Thank you for all your hard work. Fr Patrick Hirtz
The entire pilgrimage to Italy was amazing! From smooth sailing at the airports to the perfectly planned itinerary! I went for a religious “reboot” and got it! – left me thirsting for more! Thank you so much!
Fr. Stan Klores
The pilgrimage to Italy was wonderful. It may have been the best one I’ve ever taken. Everything went very smoothly. Thank you for making all the arrangements. Rev. S. Klores, New Orleans

Today, make the traditional Roman pilgrimage, including the three major Basilicas of Rome. In the morning, take a walk underground as you discover the ancient Christian catacombs. In the afternoon, pray with the Passion Relics at the Basilica of the Holy Cross and end your day pilgrimage with time to contemplate it all at the largest Marian church in Rome, St. Mary Major.
Ancient Rome
- Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill
The largest Amphitheater of its day, the Colosseum was a place of great spectacle. As you travel here, you’ll have the opportunity to step into one of the world’s most famous stages where classical mythology came to life and gladiators battled. While here, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill—the most ancient region of Italy. Learn about the grandiose history of the Roman Empire in all its glory, splendor, and infamy and find seeing the remnants of this political stronghold come to life before your very eyes. When lunchtime rolls around, get ready to test your pizza-making skills in a fun cooking workshop before enjoying your creations.
Vatican City

Then, for the rest of the morning, enjoy free time to explore the city on your own. Opt to stay at St. Peter’s to climb the cupola, take more time to pray, or search for your own hidden gem in the city. If you’re willing to pay just a little extra, you’ll even get the chance to participate in a Mosaic Workshop. Whatever you decide, we’re confident it will be worth it. In the late afternoon, take in the Italian countryside as you transfer to Assisi, then enjoy a group dinner in this captivating town.

COVID 19 Updated April, 2021
Like companies around the world, Unitours has been working diligently to cope with the COVID pandemic. We continue to monitor conditions, regulations, and specific efforts each country, city and our partners are anticipating as the destinations prepare for reopening. All are anticipating that as the vaccines roll out, they will quickly adopt protocols to allow resumption of individual and group travel. We urge you to check back with this COVID update site as more specific information becomes available and we provide destination specific information that will help you keep up to date about the destination of most interest to you. Many of our clients have already booked their pilgrimages for later this year and into next. Here are some comments from some of those leaders. “As the vaccine roll out continues, I'm looking forward to two pilgrimages in 2022. Early in 2022 to the Holy Land and a couple of months later will be heading to Central Europe. I have found that those who enjoy going on pilgrimage are ready to travel and believe it is safe to do so. I have full confidence in Unitours, that come 2022 both pilgrimages will be safe and as enriching as ever before. I'm confident Unitours will be delivering high quality pilgrimages to meet the demand for those desiring to once again be enriched in their faith.” Fr. Mike, Diocese of Buffalo “I lead pilgrimages almost every year. Of course, in 2020, all my pilgrimages were canceled as well as two scheduled for 2021- the COVID threat is still on us and people do not yet feel safe to travel - especially in groups. Nevertheless, I have presently scheduled two pilgrimages for the summer of 2022. I believe that the feeling of threat will be over and am confident that many people will desire to travel. After having spent over a year in isolation and quarantine, we need to break out. And the great jewel of pilgrimage travel will call us: to go meet the Lord; to be on a search for God; to journey together. I have been fully vaccinated and encourage everyone to do so. We need to be safe -so that we can live in the Lord!” Msgr. Joe, Diocese of Brooklyn “Last year we planned a trip to Italy in August 2022 to follow the footsteps of St Augustine in Ostia, Rome, Milan and Pavia and then to the Passion Play in Germany. We have 18 persons committed to the trip who have paid their deposits. We could easily have 20 people committed by this summer, a year before we go. Just yesterday one of our pilgrims told me how excited he was and looking forward to it. I think he represents a lot of people who are excited, looking forward to getting away and confident it will be safe in August 2022!” Fr. Bill - Archdiocese of Philadelphia “We are beginning to see a strong desire for people to 're-connect' to their faith and tradition. Having canceled our last pilgrimage, we chose to prepare for our next one in the summer of 2022. Response has been extremely positive - over 1/2 full already. We have used Unitours and not only trust them but know we can rely on a professional and competent performance. I am sure we will have no problem filling our trip, being well cared for by Unitours and experiencing a blessed and memorable pilgrimage. Fr. Tony, Diocese of Orlando I will be leading a pilgrimage this fall and feel that this is the perfect time for one. So much progress has been made in our spiritual lives this past year. People want to continue deepening their relationship and friendship with Jesus and a pilgrimage is an ideal way to make this happen. People already feel safer and more confident about travelling, so this is no longer the issue it may have been even two or three months ago. I encourage anyone who is considering leading a pilgrimage to do so. Fr. Joe Archdiocese of Boston Finally, as a further update, we have posted a short news interview we gave to a New York Catholic News program “Current News on Net NY TV”.

Former porn actress embraces Catholic faith after trip to Italy that changed her life
By Walter Sánchez Silva , Christina Herrera
ACI Prensa Staff, Apr 12, 2024 / 14:30 pm
Bree Solstad, a young woman who previously produced and acted in the pornography industry, is among the adult converts who entered the Catholic Church this Easter, leaving behind her life of “countless sins” and embracing the Catholic faith.
Solstad told ChurchPop that prior to her conversion, she led a life full of promiscuity and self-obsession, which spiked when a “recruiter” reached out to her.
“I was drinking more heavily and started a blog about my hedonistic behavior. The blog caught the attention of a successful sex worker, who reached out to me and essentially recruited me,” she said. “She showed me how to get set up and introduced me to some important people in the industry who could help me make as much money as possible. I had no moral compass and was all about myself anyway.”
Solstad, who now goes by Miss B Converted on X and presents herself as “a repentant sinner who converted to Christ; former porn actress and producer,” announced on Jan. 1, the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, her decision to “quit sex work. To repent of my countless sins. To give up my life of sin, wealth, vice, and vain self-obsession.”
She shared with her followers that her decision came after a trip to Rome and Assisi in Italy, where touched by the beauty of the art she saw in the churches she visited and the theology it represented, she experienced “what can only be described as a life-altering conversion.”
“This is a humbling experience and one that I know may be mocked or questioned by many. I am giving up all my income and turning my life over to Christ. I am leaving behind my life of rampant sin, vice, pride, debauchery, vanity, and lies to — with God’s grace — live a life of truth, beauty, obedience to God’s divine will, virtue, and humility,” she wrote on X.
Solstad, who had an account on various pornographic content platforms, said that she had been preparing for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) for some time and that she planned to be confirmed and receive her first Communion during the Easter Vigil this Holy Week. She made her first confession on Spy Wednesday.
“Thank you, Jesus,” she prayed on X, “for not giving up on such a wretched sinner. Thank you Blessed Mary, Mother of God, for your immense love and consolation.”
The young convert added that “God’s forgiveness and mercy is real. If someone as broken and sinful as me can be redeemed and converted, there is no doubt anyone reading this can also be saved by his divine mercy.”
The Virgin Mary and St. Clare of Assisi
Solstad was baptized as a Lutheran when she was 8 years old and considered herself at least “nominally Christian,” she explained April 5 to ACI Prensa, CNA’s Spanish-language news partner.
However, during college she lived a life of “drunkenness, drugs, and promiscuity.” Experiencing a tragedy in her life, she prayed hard but, she said, “I felt like God had turned his back on me and so I did the same to him,” Solstad commented to ChurchPop.
In 2023 she traveled to Italy, where she always noticed the crucifixes in the churches she visited. However in Sorrento, she said, “I noticed the Virgin Mary on street corners all over the place. All of a sudden, I felt like Mary was calling me in the strangest way. Each time I entered a church, I felt compelled to seek her out.”
At Assisi, she said, “I was impressed by St. Francis, but I was moved to tears by St. Clare. I knelt by her tomb and again asked for assistance. I felt like St. Clare was actually present with me and that she was going to take all the pain and anxiety from me and somehow give it to God,” Solstad told ACI Prensa.
After that experience and returning home, “I quickly realized that I didn’t like what my life was like,” she said. “I hated my job. I felt disgusting and guilty for the work I had been doing for a decade. I couldn’t stop thinking of all the things that I had done and all the lives I negatively affected through pornography. I felt grotesque.”
Solstad soon looked for a priest and spoke with him and his secretary, who told her “God loves you,” words that were like “a waterfall of light” and made her long “to be someone better. I wanted to be clean, I wanted to be happy and a great example of God’s love.”
While in RCIA, she said, she had to overcome some anti-Catholic prejudice she inherited from the Lutheran background, but she diligently researched everything “and I always came to the realization that what the Catholic Church was teaching was true.”
El Paso bishop criticizes Texas border efforts, laments ‘anti-immigrant’ rhetoric
“I have honestly fallen in love with the Catholic Church,” she continued, “There is such richness in the faith. The Holy Trinity, the Father, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Mary the Mother of God, all the inspiring, heroic, and beautiful saints, the sacraments, the history, the tradition, everything! But what has touched me the most is the Eucharist … something so surprising for me with Jesus physically present.”
Entry into Catholic Church, first Communion
On April 3, Solstad shared on her social media some photos of her first Communion at the Easter Vigil on March 30.
“These five seconds will forever be emblazoned in my heart, mind, and soul. This is the best moment of my life,” the young woman wrote.
“My life has changed for the better so much during these past several months, but it pales in comparison to how much this moment of receiving my first Eucharist permanently transformed me,” she recounted.
“I will never be the same again and I thank God for this undeniable fact. I am so in love with you, Jesus. Never allow me to move even one inch from your most Sacred Heart,” she wrote.
Solstad concluded her post with the first part of the Magnificat , the prayer the Virgin Mary exclaimed when she was pregnant with Jesus and met her cousin Elizabeth, who was pregnant with John the Baptist.

“My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. After Living Life of ‘Countless Sins,’ Actress Embraces Catholic Faith After Trip to Italy
On April 3, Solstad shared on her social media some photos of her first Communion at the Easter Vigil on March 30.

Former porn actress embraces Catholic faith after trip to Italy that changed her life
April 12, 2024 Catholic News Agency News Briefs 0 Print
ACI Prensa Staff, Apr 12, 2024 / 14:30 pm (CNA).
And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation,” she wrote, quoting Mary’s response to Elizabeth as recorded in Luke’s Gospel.
Solstad’s sole source of income now is from her religious goods store, which can be found here .
