When you set sail on a Disney Cruise , part of the fun is most definitely decorating your door!! Many many cruisers decorate their doors on a Disney Cruise!

free printable cruise door decorations

Disney Cruise Decoration Ideas

Similar to how campers decorate their campsites, many cruisers decorate their cabin doors! We have seen many cruise door decorations on many different cruises, but Disney Cruise Line ships definitely seem to take the cake.

You can decorate your stateroom door with magnetic decorations (all doors on Disney Cruises are metal, minus the wooden doors on concierge staterooms on the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish). Scotch tape would work too, if your decorations do not have magnets on them.

Our fellow Disney cruisers had door decorating down to a science!

Common Cruise Door Decorations

Some of the most common cruise door decorations on a Disney Cruise:

  • Dry erase board
  • Magnets (store bought and DIY)
  • Fish Extenders (these hang on the fish hook NEXT to your door)
  • Signs or pictures hung on the door with tape or Command Strips

Where to buy personalized magnets for your cruise

One of our favorite things to take on a Disney Cruise are personalized Disney Cruise magnets. I actually make our own magnets. I use my Silhouette Cameo to cut them, design them in Canva or PicMonkey, and laminate them before placing some adhesive -backed magnets on them.

You could also use printable magnet paper and print your own images on simple magnets using your home printer.

If you don’t have the time or the desire or the know-how you make your own magnets, you can find a wide variety of them for sale! Etsy has hundreds of personalized Disney Cruise magnets to purchase.

You can also search online for blogs that offer printable magnets.

I made these Mickey Ice Cream Bar Magnets – hop over to that post if you’d like the template and tutorial!

Check out the pictures below for some fun ideas for your next cruise. Decorations can be a fun way to show off your favorite characters, any special occasions you’re celebrating like birthdays and anniversaries, etc. If you don’t care about having personalized Disney Cruise door magnets, look for Disney magnets (or cruise ship, beach, etc magnets) at the Dollar Tree and on amazon .

We took these pictures on our family vacation on the Disney Magic.

Can you tell what time of year these cruise door pictures were taken? If you guessed Halloween, you are correct! This was on our Halloween Disney Cruise to Bermuda! (Disney calls these cruise itineraries “Halloween on the High Seas.” Many cruise doors reflected the Halloween theme.

Cruise Cabin Door Decoration Ideas

Whether you create your own unique door design or personalize a template, decorating your cruise cabin door lets other guests know something about you. Special occasions can feel even more special if they are shared. You may also want to include something about where you come from or your destination.

If you are cruising as a family, planning your door decorations can be an exciting pre-cruise activity. Make it a dinner-table-boardroom-type discussion where everyone can offer some input – some of the best ideas are often the simplest!

Things to decide:

  • Theme – do you want to focus on the season, a family event, the family members, or the destination? You may want to let your fellow passengers know information about which countries you have visited, how many previous cruises you have been on, or some details about yourself or your hometown.
  • Overall look and feel – do you want the effect to look glam and modern, vintage, classic, chic, or trendy? Maybe it just needs to feel homey and welcoming.
  • Color scheme – This is especially important for full-cabin door designs where too many bright colors on a busy design can look overwhelming.
  • Do you want to include some type of communication system ? An erasable message board is a great idea for groups or families that split up during the day for activities. (Find other ideas for communicating on a cruise .)
  • Do you want to use one large door covering, or would you prefer a group of small decorations you can add to during the cruise?
  • Do you want the door décor to be specific to the current cruise, or will it be used again on future cruises?
  • Are there any specific symbols, signs, or messages you need to include on your cabin door decorations?

10 Fun Cruise Cabin Door Ideas

Your cabin door is your own to decorate and communicate with other cruise guests as much as your want. It is like the screensaver on your phone, or the profile pic on your FB account – it conveys a message about the residents of that stateroom.

Let’s explore some fun and unique ways to decorate your cruise cabin door that will stand out and bring a smile to fellow passengers.

1. Go Retro

Popular cruise door retro themes include posters and pics featuring scenes from the iconic ‘Love Boat’ series. Retro pics from magazine covers can be customized and made into door magnets – be sure to personalize your design to ensure that it stays in place, as these can be pretty popular.

2. Make A Grand Statement Or Announcement

Door decorations can be great opportunities to celebrate or recognize a birthday — particularly those BIG milestone birthdays.

Or, they can feature other announcements that you want to share with the world. A giant ‘Jennifer, will you marry me?’ banner covering your door when your partner returns from a day at the pool would be a unique and memorable way to propose and get noticed!

Other big event cruise door announcements can include:

  • Just Married!
  • Wedding Anniversary Cruise
  • New Graduate

3. Have A Favorite Movie Or Book Theme

Using a theme from a favorite book or a famous line from a movie is a great way to meet new people and make friends. A short motivational motto or words from a favorite book can be interesting. Imagine a cruise door themed to Dr. Seuss’s ‘ Oh the places you’ll go!’ .

4. Nautical Theme

Yes, we know this has been done a million times, but there are new ways to jazz up an old theme. Your cruising vacation is special family time, so if you want a pirate, mermaid, or sailor theme on your door, go right ahead. Kids love keeping things simple, and the cabin door should also have special significance for them.

5. Destinations

If you and your family are frequent travelers, use your cruise cabin door as a logbook of destinations you have visited. Add small flags of countries you have been to, and you can even add a bucket list of places you plan to see in the future.

6. Convey An Interest Or Hobby

An excellent way to meet people with the same interests is to provide clues about what you are interested in on your door. For example, families who enjoy bird watching or horseback riding may use decals of birds or horses. Sports fans may like to include logos of their favorite team.

While all the decorations on your cruise cabin door must be made of flame-retardant materials, you can hang signs, small toys, or seasonal items like a wreath or tinsel on your door. Just ensure that it is well secured, looks neat, won’t fall off, blow around, and doesn’t cause obstruction in the passage.

8. Practical Cruise Door Decorations

If you are part of a team or tour group or have extended family cruising with you, you may like to include an erasable whiteboard as part of your cruise door décor. It’s a great way to communicate while you are in informal holiday mode!

9. Minimalist And Elegant

Door decorating can be fun, but it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Many passengers enjoy the anonymity of being on a cruise and don’t want to attract any attention.

At the same time, having a decal on your cruise cabin door is a good idea as it differentiates it from all the other identical doors. That makes it easier to find, and you are less likely to have other confused passengers trying the door while searching for their own cabins.

Cruise On Porthole Decoration Wall Sticker - Peel & Stick Decal Art

There are loads of tried-and-tested simple cruise cabin décor designs available to order online that look elegant and stylish. An inexpensive peel-and-stick porthole may be all you need to make your cruise cabin door easy to locate without being showy.

10. Seasonal Cruise Door Decorations

Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, or Halloween decorations are always on point during the relevant seasons. You may be cruising the seas in a tropical destination, but you can still have a gorgeous warm, decorated fireplace motif on your cabin door.

Practical Considerations When Decorating A Cruise Cabin Door

The first and most essential step to decorating a cruise cabin door is to figure out the best way to attach your décor. Cruise liners that do permit door decorations all have strict rules in place. These include:

  • You may not damage, stain, or mark the door
  • No adhesive tape or sticky putty should be used
  • The materials used may not be a safety hazard
  • Potential fire hazards like string lights may not be used
  • The decorations must only be on the door, not the surrounding walls or doorframe
  • Decorations must never include profanity or be offensive

In addition, if you are planning a large banner or poster, you need to know the size of the cabin doors. Door size can vary slightly between liners, but the width of a regular cruise cabin door is usually around 23 inches. It is slightly wider for wheelchair-accessible rooms.

Another valuable tip is never to put anything sentimental or irreplaceable on your cruise cabin door. Unfortunately, some cute generic items or cruise magnets may get removed.

An excellent way to prevent your cabin door décor finding new owners is to personalize everything as much as possible. It is far less likely that a banner that says ‘Happy Birthday, Susan’ will vanish than one that simply says ‘Happy Birthday.’

How To Attach Cruise Cabin Door Decorations

Since you cannot damage your cabin door, it is essential to carefully plan how to attach your decorations securely to the door so it doesn’t fall off and look untidy. The two most commonly used methods are:

  • Magnets – Cruise cabins doors are most often metal. So magnets can be a perfect option.
  • Command hooks or strip s allow you to decorate neatly and securely and are easy to remove without leaving a trace. Just remember to bring a pack along on the trip! (Make sure that your cruise line allows command strips. Here’s an example of an approved policy from Carnival .)

Do I Have To Decorate My Cruise Cabin Door?

Cabin door decorating is a fun, voluntary activity. If you don’t want to decorate your door and want to relax, unwind and not attract any attention during your cruise, there is no pressure to put anything on your door.

Some tour groups may arrange a door decorating competition as an additional activity to look forward to during the cruise. However, it is always optional; if you don’t decorate your door, you won’t be alone.

Some cruise lines do not encourage door decoration. Norwegian Cruise Lines have banned door decorating, citing it as a safety hazard. However, most cruise lines allow door decorating to a more or less extent. Royal Caribbean allows door decorating, but it should remain simple and elegant, while on Disney and Carnival cruises, you can show off your creativity.

What Is A Fish Extender?

You may come across the term ‘Fish Extender,’ especially if you are on a Disney Cruise. Essentially, it’s a gift-exchange program among Disney cruise passengers . This is not an official event sponsored by the cruise line, but it is one that is well-established and operates through internet message groups .

A practice that has evolved is that passengers leave small gifts or tokens for each other on the fish-shaped hook outside each cabin door.

Fish extenders cannot be purchased on board ; rather, you must pack one if you want to participate. They can be purchased at various sites online, or you can make your own before the cruise that fits with your door décor.

What Is The Deal With Pineapples On Cruise Cabin Doors?

While pineapples are often associated with tropical islands and a relaxed beachy lifestyle, they have taken on an entirely different meaning on some cruises. An upside-down pineapple on a cabin door may indicate that the cabin occupants are swingers.

While there is nothing wrong with including pineapples as part of an overall large design, family cruisers may be better off if they ensure that individual pineapple motifs on their cabin door cannot be flipped over as a prank by mischievous fellow passengers.

Closing Thoughts

Decorating your cabin door on a cruise can be a great way to stand out and make it easy to know which room belongs to you at a glance. Plus, planning and creating your door decor in advance can be a fun pre-cruise project. Just remember to check with your cruise line first to see the rules regarding door decorations.

Cruise Door Decorations: 125 Ideas

Find this again easily by pinning it!

And 5 reasons that decorating your cruise room door is good to do.

I just returned from another cruise and as usual, enjoyed looking at all of the cruise door decorations. It is always fun to see how people decorate their cabin room doors. You can tell that some people plan ahead and prepare banners and decorations prior to their cruise departure. Others realize the benefit of decorating their cabin room door while on board and throw something together with whatever they can get their hands on.

In this post I am going to share photographs of 125 decorated cruise cabin doors from my recent trip and five reasons it is a good idea to do it. AND – at the bottom of this post, I’ve linked up cruise door decorations you can buy on Amazon, making is super easy for you. I am an Amazon affiliate, meaning that I may make a small commission for a purchase you make, but that doesn’t change the price you pay at all.

5 reasons to decorate your cruise room door

  • It is sometimes hard to find your room when you are walking down LONG hallways where every door looks the same. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve passed my room. Having a cruise door decoration makes it easy to spot your room.
  • If you are with a group, having a cruise door decoration makes it easy to find and connect with others in your party because you’ll recognize each other’s decorations, which often include names.
  • It is Fun and Festive!
  • It is a place to share something that you are celebrating (birthdays, anniversaries, graduations) with other guests.
  • Incorporating a memo board into your cruise door decoration allows members of a larger group to leave notes for each other. Most cruise ships now have social media plans that can be purchased and used for texting, but this can work for those that don’t.

There are 125 photos shown below. As you reach the bottom, you’ll notice that many people also simply tie something onto the their “mail slot” right next to their door. I wanted to share a sampling of these too in my collection of cruise door decorations.

As you plan your cruise door decorations, please see your cruise line guidelines for adhering/hanging things in your room to avoid any charges for damage. Keep in mind that the doors are magnets, so magnets can hold your decorations up. While there are stated rules about what can be used, I see everything – scotch tape, duct tape (don’t do this one!), magnets, plastic temporary hooks, etc.

Guidelines for Cruise Ship Door Decorating

Here are the rules and guidelines to follow if you decide to decorate your cabin door.

Firstly, make sure that your decorations are not placed on the door frame, wall, railings or light fixtures. To avoid damaging your cabin door, use magnets or command strips. Tape, glue and other adhesives are forbidden.

For safety reasons, all decorations must be made of flame retardant materials. No string lights are allowed on the door or in the hallway.

Most cruise cabin doors, like the walls in your stateroom, are metal . This makes decorating with magnets a preferred way to adhere the decorations. Many cruisers even make their own personalized magnets at home from photos and pictures.

However, suites on some cruise ships may have wood doors. Make sure to check your cruise line website for their current cruise cabin decoration policy.

What Should You NOT Do When Decorating Your Cruise Cabin Door

Sometimes people ask if anything is off limits when it comes to decorating your cabin door. Cruise lines that allow door decoration ask that you “keep it clean”. In other words, don’t include profanity or “adult” photos on your cabin door. This is especially true if you’re on a family cruise .

What about pineapples? You may ask

I find this mildly amusing, as I like pineapple decor. However, ever since I learned of what pineapples on a door can actually mean, I cannot look at pineapples in the same way.

While I could send you to google this, I may as well explain if you haven’t heard this yet.

Pineapples on a door mat or as a door decoration are supposed to signify hospitality and welcome. However, it has more significance for those that know…

Pineapples on a door is a code that “swingers” use to let others know about their “interests”. Upside down pineapples are said to mean the couple is actively looking for more than friendship.

So, on land, and on cruises, if you see pineapples on a door, it may mean more than you know. Of course, it may just be that they like pineapple decorations or that they have friends with a sense of humor ;-).

More Useful Items to Bring on a Cruise

Here are 8 cruise essentials that many cruisers bring on each and every cruise.

I’ve included Amazon links so you can click and verify pricing and reviews of all items.

Packing cubes  – They really just make packing and unpacking easier, and nothing will make you feel more organized for your cruise (or any type travel)

Reusable luggage tags – It’s a good idea to buy luggage tag holders before you cruise. You’ll simply slip the printed luggage tags (from your cruise line) into the durable plastic sleeves and attach them to each suitcase.

Magnet hooks  – Cruise cabin walls are metal. This is why  magnet hooks  are a top recommendation by avid cruisers to add extra hooks and storage to your stateroom.

Over the door organizer –  A cruiser favorite, you can fit a lot of items in the organizer, and hang it on the bathroom door or cabin wall. This is really helpful for families cruising with kids .

Hanging toiletry bag –  this toiletry bag is a huge space saver, as it can hang on bathroom door or even magnet hooks.

Large zippered nautical stripe beach bag –  an awesome beach bag that can hold 4 big towels and everything you need on shore excursions. I use it as a cruise carry-on bag as well.

Bonine (seasickness meds)  – Make sure to bring along your favorite non drowsy motion sickness medication. Personally, I find  Bonine  to be very effective without negative side effects (for my family).

Decorating Cruise Doors: A Complete Guide

Ideas & rules – everything you need to know about cruise ship door decorations.

If you’ve been on a cruise lately, you’ll likely have seen a variety of magnets, signs, or even full banners across stateroom doors. Cruise door decorations are a trend found on almost all family-friendly cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, and of course Disney Cruises.

Why decorate your stateroom door + a few ideas

There are so many reasons people might choose to add a little personalization on their cabin door during a cruise vacation! Sometimes it’s as simple as quickly identifying which cabin is yours. Elaborate decorations might be used to celebrate a life event or holiday.

These are a few common reasons people participate in door decorating on a cruise ship:

It helps you to recognize your room/cabin

With the size of ships now, the chances of getting lost in finding your stateroom are pretty good! People use cruise cabin door decorations to mark their cabin and quickly identify it. Then there are those who tend to indulge too much and after an evening of breaking even on the drink package, a door magnet or small decoration will help you know when you’ve arrived — at the right cabin!

Stateroom Door decorations To celebrate a special occasion

Celebrate a birthday, anniversary, retirement, or any other special occasion with a fun door decoration on your cruise cabin. Walk through the halls of most cruise ships and you’ll see people of all ages being announced on their door!

Cruise Door Decorations to Celebrate a holiday

Christmas is a great time to take a cruise and an even better time to decorate your cabin door for the festive season! On a recent MSC Cruise on the MSC Meraviglia, we couldn’t believe the number of door decorations we saw with so many creative takes on the holidays! It was great fun!.

But don’t limit the door decorating to Christmas, we’ve seen both large and small decor for Valentines Day, easter, and especially Halloween.

You can leave messages on your cabin door

Fun + Practical, use a decorative magnet wipe board and announce to your travel mates where you’ll be. Want even more fun and live on the edge a little? Leave a dry-erase marker tied to the board and see other passengers get creative with your message board. Be warned, this is risky! 🙂

Cruise door magnets and banners.

The easiest way to add a little fun to your cruise cabin door is simply getting magnets you love. There are magnets for everything available on Amazon and Etsy, or even design your own and have them made! The ideas are endless. Additionally, this is the safest way to go when trying to adhere to cruise policies about flame-retardant materials.

Other passengers go all out with banners and foil letters that can be adhered with command strips or even double-sided magnets.

See a few great ideas on Pinterest for decorating your cabin door .

Can You Decorate Your Stateroom Door on All Cruise Lines?

While some cruise lines encourage decorating and personalizing your cabin door, others have decided to rule the practice out. Norwegian Cruise Line & Virgin Voyages explicitly prohibit door decorations (though some people still do it).

Cruise line rules about decorating cabin doors by each cruise line

Some cruise lines promote door decorating fun and sell decorations to guests, however, there are some important rules to decorating your door! Here’s a list of rules for each cruise line.

Can you decorate a cabin or stateroom door on Disney Cruise Line?

Yes, you can! Decorating a stateroom door on a Disney Cruise is a great family activity as well as a great roll call or group cruise activity!

Disney Cruise Line door decoration rules

You may not affix items to your stateroom doors using tape or any adhesive, including removable gel adhesives or command strips.  Over-the-door hanging organizers are prohibited. Light bulb strings are not permitted.

The recommended door decorations for Disney Cruises are magnetic only… but it’s important to know that not all doors are magnetic.  Concierge staterooms on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have wooden doors.

Can you decorate a cabin door on Carnival Cruise Line?

Yes! you can decorate your stateroom door, but there are rules about what’s allowed and what’s not.

Carnival cruise door decoration rules

Carnival cruise line has put out the most extensive rules about decorating your cabin door. Some people may feel like these rules are too restrictive, but the fact that Carnival actually embraces the concept as well as they do, it’s no surprise there are rules.

Rules are updated on occasion and it’s good to read the Carnival website about  decorating your stateroom door and stateroom here .

This is what Carnival allows, and doesn’t allow for cruise door decorations:

  • All decorations must be fire retardant from the factory (not sprayed with fire retardant material after the fact).
  • Only decorations on the actual door, not in the hall or on the frames & walls.
  • Magnets and command strips only – no tape.
  • Nothing is allowed on the balconies (which is no surprise)
  • Nothing can be hung to restrict airflow or lights.

Most importantly – what I see violated sometimes, is the fact people hang string lights. This is a no-no. Not even battery-powered fairy lights are allowed.

When in doubt, Carnival Cruises sells door decorations directly, but here are a few tips on Carnival Cruise Line door decorations.

Can you decorate your cruise cabin door on Princess Cruises?

Princess is not necessarily the first cruise line that would come to mind to embrace creative door decor as the clientele trends older and there are fewer children (normally). There are no rules against decorating your cabin door on a Princess Cruise, but following the general guidelines of no adhesives and using items that are fire-rated will keep you from getting in trouble with the cruise line.

Generally speaking, most passengers on Princess Cruises, should they do a door decoration, it’s usually a simple magnet to help identify a cabin or a small magnetic celebration door sign. I’ve yet to see elaborate door decor on a Princess ship the way you might on a Disney ship.

Can you decorate your door on Royal Caribbean?

Following basically the same guidelines set out by Carnival, RCCL allows door decorations as long as they’re not hazardous or stuck to the door with tape or adhesives.

Norwegian Cruise Line door decoration rules

Stateroom stewards have been instructed to remove all decorations and place them inside the room. A real bummer, right?

The reality is, while NCL published a policy against cruise decorations in 2019, there are still plenty of people who put magnets on their doors and they go ‘unnoticed’. Much more than magnets, however, will likely get the decorations removed. Just know that it’s officially against NCL rules to decorate a door, but it seems that the cabin stewards have some discretion.

The below photo was from a Norwegian ship. So while they have rules, how they are applied or adhered to will vary. Just be prepared to have your treasures removed since it’s the official policy on NCL.

Can you decorate your cabin door on Virgin Voyages?

If you ask around about door decorating on Virgin Voyages , you’ll find that most people don’t participate and some travel agents have even said it’s against Virgin policy (we can’t find it in writing, though we’ve tried to confirm). On a couple of Virgin Voyages cruises, we saw only 2 doors that had anything on them and they were simple magnets. If in doubt, contact Virgin directly, just know it’s not a common practice with this cruise brand.

Are you embarking on a cruise adventure soon? Amp up the excitement by adding a personal touch to your stateroom door!

Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or a proud graduation moment, cruise door decorations are a fantastic way to celebrate these milestones at sea. It’s not just about making your door look fabulous—it’s about creating memories that stick long after the cruise has docked back home.

Table of Contents

Why Decorate Your Cruise Cabin Door?

Walking around the cruise ship, you’ll find many passengers who have taken the time to decorate their stateroom doors.

There are many reasons to decorate your cabin door, not the least of which makes it easier to find your room.

1. Show Your Personality

Your cruise stateroom door is the perfect canvas to express who you are. Think of it as the front porch of your temporary sea home.

You have a vast ocean to explore, but your door is your personal stamp.

Show off your interests , whether you’re a fan of tropical paradises, a Disney enthusiast, or love nautical themes. Your door decoration can be a fantastic icebreaker and give others a peek into your world.

2. Easy to Identify Your Room

Cute Flamingo Stateroom Door Decoration

Cruise ships are so big that it’s common for passengers to get lost on board. Even the most experienced cruisers can have difficulty locating their cabin door in the long corridor of identical staterooms.

A unique door decoration makes spotting your room a breeze . Apart from being practical for you, it’s also beneficial for others in your group. You won’t be that person awkwardly trying their key card on multiple doors before finding their own.

3. Start Conversations with Other Passengers

One popular door decoration is a magnetic whiteboard .

Attaching a magnetic whiteboard to your stateroom door is a great way to leave messages for other passengers. You can write words of wisdom, inspirational quotes , or fun jokes for fellow cruisers to read and enjoy.

A whiteboard is a great way to communicate with your travel companions while traveling in a large group. You could leave a note letting your friends and family know where they can find you or when you will return to your cabin.

4. Celebrate A Special Occasion

Cruise ships are celebration-friendly zones, and what better way to honor a special occasion than with a well-adorned door? Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or graduation , your door can reflect the joy and significance of the milestone.

Plus, other guests and crew will join in the festivities by offering their well wishes as they pass by.

4. Fun for the Kids

For little sailors, a decorated door is like a treasure map’s ‘X’ marking the spot. It’s a beacon of excitement and a signal that fun lies behind the door . It can feature their favorite characters, colors, or themes.

With every return to the room, their decorated door reminds them that this trip is an adventure made just for them.

Before your cruise, having your kids create their own door decorations is a great idea. Getting your kids to design cabin door decorations can keep them occupied for hours or days and excite them about their upcoming cruise vacation.

5. Send a Secret Message

Pineapple on a cruise ship door

Sometimes, your door decor can be more than just decoration; it can carry a secret message . Maybe it’s an inside joke among friends or the secret upside-down pineapple . The door becomes a conversation starter, a mystery for others to ponder, and a fun way for you to communicate a playful or romantic gesture.

Does Every Cruise Line Let You Decorate Your Cabin Door?

Lobster Decorations on a Stateroom Door

Door decorations on family-friendly cruise lines like Disney Cruise Line and Carnival are trendy. But you’ll find passengers decorating their cabin doors on plenty of other cruise lines.

Only one of the mainstream cruise lines has banned cabin door decorations. In August 2019, Norwegian Cruise Line banned all cruise cabin door decorations , citing fire safety concerns.

Personalized Anchor Decorations on a Cruise Ship Cabin Door

Some general rules apply to all cruise lines. They are:

  • Decorations must not leave a mark or damage doors. If they do, you may receive a fine. Avoid tape and adhesives of all types.
  • Decorations must not be offensive, vulgar, or otherwise inappropriate.
  • Decorations must not extend beyond the door. The corridors on a cruise ship are narrow, and your decorations should not block service carts or passengers.

Carnival Cruise Door Decoration Rules

According to Carnival’s website , the following rules apply for cruise cabin door decorations:

  • Decorations may consist only of fire-retardant materials. Please note that items sprayed with fire retardant spray are not acceptable.
  • Decorations may only be placed on the stateroom door, not the surrounding frame, walls, or railings.
  • You may use magnets or Command Strips but no adhesives like tape or glue.
  • Over-the-door hanging organizers must hang inside the stateroom, must also be of fire retardant material, and cannot damage the door.
  • No decorations of any kind are allowed on balconies.
  • No decorations or items may be placed over light fittings or fixtures. This may restrict the airflow and cause the item to ignite.
  • No string lights of any kind are allowed.

Disney Cruise Line Door Decorations Rule

Guests on Disney Cruise Line are encouraged to decorate their stateroom doors. According to Disney’s website , the following rules apply:

  • You are welcome to place magnetic signs on your stateroom door. Please note that Concierge staterooms on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have wooden doors.
  • You may not affix items to your stateroom doors using tape or any adhesive, including removable gel adhesives, as this can damage the doors’ finish.
  • Over-the-door hanging organizers are prohibited, as they can scratch and/or disfigure stateroom doors and trim.
  • Guests who damage doors violating these guidelines will be assessed a $100 fee per incident to cover the cost of repairs.
  • Light bulb strings are not permitted.

Royal Caribbean Door Decorating Rules

Door decorations are a common sight on Royal Caribbean cruises. Royal Caribbean encourages guests to decorate their cabin doors, even selling magnetic decorations on their website.

Royal Caribbean’s guest code of conduct  states, “Inappropriate or abusive behavior is not permitted. This includes…placing materials (including signs, banners, decorations, etc.) anywhere on the exterior of the ship, placing materials anywhere on the interior of the ship (including stateroom doors, along corridors, etc.) without the express permission of ship management or  which may be deemed by ship management as inappropriate …”

Celebrity Cruises

Door decorating isn’t as common on Celebrity Cruises. But the cruise line does allow guests to decorate cabin doors.

Celebrity Cruises guest code of conduct states , “Inappropriate or abusive behavior is not permitted. This includes…placing signs, banners, decorations, or other materials anywhere on the exterior of the ship; placing materials on stateroom doors, along corridors, or anywhere else on the interior of the ship without the express permission of ship management…”

Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Holland America Line

Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Holland America Line don’t provide specific rules for door decorating. While door decorations are allowed on these cruise lines, they’re not as common as on other cruise operators.

Norwegian Cruise Line Door Decorating Rules

In August 2019, Norwegian Cruise Line updated their policy prohibiting cruise door decorations of any kind.

The announcement stated, “As per safety requirements, stateroom door decorations are strictly prohibited. Your stateroom steward has been instructed to remove and place all decorations inside the room. Thank you for your understanding and compliance with this safety policy.”

The cruise line cited fire safety concerns as the reason for the decision. Cabin stewards are instructed to remove all decorations and place them inside the room.

Tips for Decorating Your Cruise Cabin Door

free printable cruise door decorations

Here are some general tips for decorating your cabin door:

  • Never decorate the door frame, wall, railings, or light fixtures. Only stick door decorations on the stateroom door itself.
  • Only attach decorations using magnets or command strips to avoid damaging the door. Avoid tape and adhesives of all types.
  • Only use decorations made of flame-retardant materials.
  • Cruise lines DO NOT allow string lights on your door or in the hallway.

How to Attach Cruise Door Decorations

Fun Cruise Ship Door Decoration

Attaching cruise door decorations requires secure and non-damaging methods to the door.

Most cruise ship doors are made of metal, making magnets the perfect way to attach decorations. You can use magnetic strips or hooks to hang lightweight items. Ensure the magnets are strong enough to hold your decorations securely.

Sometimes, the doors are covered with a non-metallic finish, so you need stronger magnets.

Avoid using glue, tape, or other adhesives which can damage the door.

Editor’s Tip

If you’re on a Disney cruise, it’s essential to remember that the Concierge staterooms have a wooden veneer. The extra-thick surface requires extra-strong neodymium magnets to attach your decorations.

We’ll be sailing on the Wonder of the Seas this coming May. I love being creative and understand that I’ll be limited to decorating our cabin door. We’ll be in a ocean view, would you happen to know what the surface door is made of? Metal, wood, etc. This will help me decide what I have to bring. Thank you.

The doors are most likely be made of metal, similar to the other Oasis-class ships. You shouldn’t have any issues using magnets to hang your decorations. However, it’s impossible to know for certain as the ship hasn’t debuted yet.

P.S. I would love to hear about your experience on the new ship! Feel free to comment on our Wonder of the Seas post when you get back from your vacation and share your experience.

Cruise Ship Door Decorations Ideas

Published: Mar 23, 2023 · Modified: Sep 4, 2023 by Food, Fun & Faraway Places. This post may contain affiliate links 47 Comments

Planning your cruise ship door decorations ahead of time is so smart, and a good idea if you want to do something special.

Cruise ship in the Bay.

The first time many people learn about cruise cabin door decorations is when they are already on their first cruise. Uh oh.

By then, you are at the mercy of the ship store, and they don't typically have a lot.

If the store does have stateroom door decorations, you'll be paying a lot more for them than you could have if you had shopped ahead of time.

My goal is to prepare you with lots of ideas for your cruise ship door decorations. If you cruise a lot, you'll gather your own collection of cruise door decorations to use on the high seas over time.

I remember seeing some doors beautifully decorated on my first cruise and thinking (slaps head) why didn't I think of this?!

Table of Contents

Before Your Cruise

And speaking of things to do before your cruise, do yourself a favor and go ahead and reserve your room for the night before now. You don't want to worry about being late, and traffic (and other stuff!) happens!

The top ports in the United States are Miami, Cape Canaveral, Everglades, followed by Port of Cozumel in Mexico.

Where to Stay in Port of Miami

The Port of Miami is located at 1015 North America Way in Miami, Florida.

⭐  Recommended Budget Hotel Tru By Hilton

A budget hotel in Miami that is close to the Port of Miami Cruise Terminal is not easy to find. This one is just 2.1 miles away and was under $200. when we searched which was during season.

Tru is actually considered a 3-star hotel, which is not bad for the price. It has a pool and fitness center.

⭐  Recommended Upscale Hotel The Betsy Hotel, South Beach

Located 3 miles from Port of Miami, the Betsy Hotel is a luxurious place to stay with a rooftop pool and direct beach access. I hear LT Steak and Seafood at the Betsy is incredible.

Where to Stay in Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral is located in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Located just about 45 minutes from Walt Disney World, it's a pretty popular spot. With seven terminals, you'll need to look at your cruise documents to figure out which terminal you will sail from.

⭐  Recommended Budget Hotel La Quinta Inn & Suites

Located a little over 5 miles from Port Canaveral, this hotel has a pool, free wifi, and breakfast is included.

La Quinta also has a microwave and small refrigerator in the room, and was less then $150 when we searched in the Spring.

⭐  Recommended Upscale Hotel Hampton Inn & Suites

Though we couldn't find a 4-star hotel in Port Canaveral, the 3-star Hampton Inn & Suites is just a mile from the Port.

It has a lovely pool, fitness center, and continental breakfast to get you going before heading out to the terminal.

Where to Stay in Port Everglades

Port Everglades is located at 1850 Eller Drive in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

⭐  Recommended Budget Hotel AC Hotel by Marriott

At just 3 miles from Port Everglades, the AC Hotel by Marriott has excellent reviews but books up fast, so reserve ahead of time.

This is a pretty property offering a large pool, free bikes, fitness center, and on-site restaurant.

⭐  Recommended Upscale Hotel Ritz Carlton Fort Lauderdale

This ocean front property boasts an on-site spa, tropical sundeck, and infinity pool with private cabanas. It is also just 3 miles from the terminal.

Burlock Coast Seafare & Spirits is specializes in coastal-inspired dishes and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Where to Stay in Port of Cozumel

There are actually three different ports in Cozumel , so make sure you know where you are going!

I paid for two taxis when I spent the day in Singapore as I went to the wrong port. Don't make that mistake!

⭐  Recommended Budget Hotel Illa Cozumel

Located just 0.2 miles from city center, this is a really convenient spot as it's also just 0.6 miles from the airport.

Illa Cozmel has an outdoor pool, terrace, and garden.

⭐  Recommended Upscale Hotel The Westin Cozumel

Located 3 miles from city center, the Westin Cozumel offers a private beach, water sports facilities, outdoor pool and sun terrace, and more.

You can play golf, snorkel, and scuba in the nearby surrounding area.

Be sure to bookmark this list of what to do in Cozumel so you'll have it when you start planning your trip.

Decoration Ideas

As I mentioned, it's not totally too late to decorate if you weren't prepared with cruise door decoration ideas. Once you are on the ship, there are gift shops onboard.

The cruise ship gift shops know you'll be searching for cruise ship door decorations so you'll probably find a few magnets to personalize your door, or maybe even a door hanger.

But wouldn't it be fun to have something uniquely you?

I started a Pinterest Board  showing more ideas for decorating your door on a cruise. Join the fun and please ask if you'd like to be added so you can pin your door photos!

Before you move on, you might want to grab my free cruise packing list printable . This is just for cruises and will really help you get ready for your trip.

A few years ago I took a cruise to Cozumel on Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas with a group. The organizer set up a contest for door decorations so we were really prepared!

Because I had the most creative roommate ever, we won! You can scroll down after the 10 Ideas for cruise door decorations and see all the doors from that trip.

Holiday Cruise Door Decorations

This is a no-brainer, but if there is a holiday coming up, use those holiday decorations!

My first cruise was in the middle of December. I saw the most adorable decorations with a Christmas theme .

You could even draw a big tree on paper and put your family names on the Christmas ornaments. All you need is a roll of magnetic tape.

For Valentines Day, you could do hearts. You get the idea. This Cruise Ship Porthole Peel 'N Place is super cute. You may also find cute decorations at the dollar store.

Special Event Decorations

Are you celebrating a special occasion like a birthday , anniversary , or graduation while on a cruise ? Let fellow cruisers know by announcing it on your door!

Princess Cruises even has a package you can purchase ahead of time which is very clever.

The cruise ship door decorations I saw when I was cruising on the Holland America Maasdam were great as they made sure not to use adhesive on the door.

It looks like everything was attached to the railing and the door number sign.

Scrapbooking Door Decorations

Head to your favorite craft store and get scrapbooking decorations with a cruising theme.

They will probably not have magnets, but you can buy a roll of magnet backing in a strip. Just cut pieces to fit each magnet.

This is pretty inexpensive, looks great on the door, and is the easiest way to create something uniquely you.

Hometown Decorations

Love your state? How about your state (or country) flag or something special from your neck of the woods?

This is a fun way to get to know others from your part of the world.

flags on Holland America cruise cabin door

Destination Decorations

Use your destination as a theme.

Going to Mexico? How about sombreros?

The Bahamas? Beach balls and umbrella drinks! This one is cute and has the year on it, so will make a fun souvenir you can keep on your fridge at home.

Going on an arctic cruise? Look at this adorable Arctic Cruise Props Party Accessory.

If you are going to several ports, grab something from each one and put it on your door while you're cruising.

I saw one door on Facebook that had been decorated for a European cruise, and they had a cutout from all the places they saw while there. Very clever and easy!

Don't spend too much money as things could get stolen. I've only heard of one incident where that happened, and I hope it was a kid who didn't know any better.

Interactive Cruise Door Decorations

Magnetic dry erase boards and pens are a great way to ask a question:

  • How many times have you cruised?
  • What's your favorite port to visit on a cruise?

Believe it or not, people will answer! This one is a perfect size. Be sure to get a magnetic board. Command strips are not allowed as they can damage the door or walls.

Hobby Decorations

What's your favorite hobby? Love movies? Grab some decorations of film reels and movie DVD boxes. Love to surf? Read? Get creative like this one!

flower magnets on cruise cabin door

Place a magnet on each side of the door draping string from one end to the other for a different way to display any of the above ideas, or even postcards you've bought along the way. Wouldn't that be fun?

Selfie Station for the Win

And my favorite idea (from my roommate on the ship!) won us the prize for the best door. Create a Selfie Station!

Put up a frame mat with decorations all around, the name of the cruise line, the ship, and the date, and invite other cruisers to take a selfie! How much fun is that? And what a great memento of their trip!

Dos and Don'ts for Decorations

DO NOT use adhesives. Magnets are readily available and don't damage doors.

Don't get too creative and string lights in your room or on the door as this can be a fire hazard.

For the same reasons, don't ever hang anything from the light fixtures. Just be sensible with your stateroom decorations!

And, of course, never use profanity on your door. The ship will probably take it down.

Wouldn't it be amazing to have a cruise door decorating contest for a family reunion or other event?

You now have the know-how to organize it! Be sure to come back and share your own ideas in the comments, and pin your photos! I would LOVE to see what you create!

The first time many people find out about decorating your cruise door on a ship is when they are on their first cruise, but after reading this, you'll be prepared with your cruise door decorations!

And if you love cruising, check out the places I've cruised to get ideas!

We sailed on the Disney Fantasy Cruise for my younger daughter's 18th birthday. We made incredible memories and if you have Disney-loving kids, I can't recommend it highly enough!

For our 25th anniversary, we took our girls with us on a Viking River Cruise on the Rhine. Yes, honestly, it is more for adults. My husband and I absolutely love it, but our kids were bored on the ship.

There are better cruises for kids and teens. Our girls did, however, find out there is a lot to do in the Black Forest besides eating cake, and they loved the food on the ship.

My husband and I took the Rhone Viking River Cruise on our own. We found really incredible excursions and it was a wonderful getaway for the two of us.

We also loved the very romantic Danube Cruise, especially spending one day in Budapest. What a magical city!

I wish my girls had been on Carnival with me because I think they would have enjoyed it. The excursions were definitely more their style. Carnival is perfect for a Girls Getaway ! My sister and I had a blast!

A couple of years ago I flew out to Seattle for the Norwegian Bliss inaugural cruise to Victoria.

The ship goes to Alaska for the full journey, but I've grown to love Victoria so much that I was thrilled!

I finally got to Alaska in 2022! Be sure to know the best time to cruise to Alaska , as well as the best time to cruise to Alaska to see whales .

I few years ago I said with Norwegian for the first time, and I was thrilled to be on the Encore inaugural cruise. This line has a magnificent cruise from New York to Bermuda .

Finally, my longest cruise to date was on the Holland America Maasdam in 2019. I sailed with them for 20 days from Singapore to Malaysia, Thailand , Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and back to Singapore for one more day of exploring before heading home. It was the trip of a lifetime!

It's best to check the website of the cruise you're taking before planning your decorations. Limitations and safety requirements vary by cruise lines. For instance, Carnival and Royal Caribbean do allow decorations, only on the door, and they must not be inappropriate. The last time I checked, Norwegian Cruise Lines had stated they do not allow door decorations. Make sure you check for specific requirements.

Having a lanyard makes it easy to use your stateroom card for purchases, getting into your room, etc. Otherwise, every time you want to use it, you have to go into your bag or wallet. Keeping it in the lanyard keeps it safe, too. Hang your lanyard on the inside of your cabin door so you won't leave without it.

In my opinion, YES! Though you probably won't be in your stateroom for that long, it's lovely to be able to sit outside. However, I will say I only had a window on a 20 day cruise and it was still wonderful.

Hi Kelly. I tried hobby lobby for the frame. Is that white background poster paper??? I only found actual magnetic frames for pictures. Nothing like this white background you gals had.

Hi Janell! I’m not sure which one you’re referring to. The selfie station? That’s a cardboard mat- like the ones you put inside a photo frame. We bought a package of magnet stripping to put it on the door. It comes in a roll. Does that answer your question? Please let me know! Sounds like you have a plan and I want to see it!! ????

We're traveling with a group from our church and I would love to have magnets for everyone's cabin door but all that I've found are small and expensive. We have 8 cabins and I'd like to have one for everyone in the cabin so that's several! Do you know of an inexpensive place I could order some or even make my own? I think I'd rather have a magnetic sheet vs. magnetic strips. Thanks so much! I really love all of your ideas!

January 07, 2019 at 10:55 pm

So fun, Kathy! I would think you could make them with a magnetic sheet and cut them. Maybe I can help. What are you thinking for the design? Does your group have a name? Let me know! Michael's and other craft stores will get you thinking if you go in and browse. I'm excited to see what you come up with!

Don't understand the flame retardant decoration? What no paper products or poster board?

May 06, 2018 at 3:53 pm

Where did you see that, Eyvonee? Perhaps ask someone on the particular ship you are sailing.

October 08, 2017 at 1:01 pm

I've taken 28 cruises & just returned from my latest back to back yesterday. I ALWAYS decorate my door, but ALWAYS have things stolen, ruined & broken. I use balloons to mark my door so we can easily find it down the long halls, but teenage boys run by & pop them over & over. I made crafty flip flops for each member of my family members, but they got stolen. I've used tape-on decorations but they get ripped. I don't dare put nice magnets up anymore, as they are expensive & easy to grab & run. Please help me find a way to decorate without attracting the CREEPS who ruin my fun! The doors used to hold magnets, but now they don't only the edge around the door is metal. Tape is a must! Any suggestions? How about easily removable paint? Marker? Stickers? Thanks.

October 08, 2017 at 4:05 pm

This makes me so sad, Julie! I don't know a way around the stealing, but I'm going to see what I can find out about what we can use besides tape. Grrr. Why do people have to ruin the fun?

May 08, 2018 at 10:41 pm

You could always put one of those little fake cameras just above door with a note somewhere saying your being watched or smile were watching u lol

November 03, 2021 at 7:33 pm

So can you use like wrapping paper on the front of the door to wrap it like a gift?

November 03, 2021 at 8:23 pm

Hi Melissa - yes, as long as you don't use adhesives. Use magnets for the back of the paper. You could add a bow to the paper with adhesive as long as it's attached to the paper and not the door. I'd love to see a photo of your door!

What cruise line is it that the doors aren't metal?

October 29, 2017 at 9:44 am

I'm not sure Shawn. Sorry!

July 29, 2017 at 4:15 pm

How do you get the frame to stay on the door if you didn't use tape? Also I love the selfie ideal! Plan on using that one! Gonna use a Bahama theme! So excited!

July 29, 2017 at 4:17 pm

Please email me at [email protected] I used the wrong email.

July 30, 2017 at 2:02 am

It's been a while, but I believe the frame was magnetic. When you go to Michael's, Hobby Lobby, or similar, you can tell them what you are looking for. Even better, or on Amazon. so much easier to find exactly what you need, and I'm pretty sure I included some links. Enjoy and I want to see photos!! Would love to add them to this post!

September 22, 2019 at 8:46 am

Ooh thanks for that because I was going to inquire about the selfie station. Its my 40th bday so I want to decorate my door. Thanks for the ideas.

September 22, 2019 at 9:14 am

Happy 40th!! That would be so fun!! Email me your address so I can send you a little gift for your 40th. ???? [email protected]

I’m going on my 1st cruise next year for my 25th anniversary and trying to think of a cute saying or something to have a selfie station and find a cute way to somehow ask people to tag us in their photos to share in our celebration

December 04, 2019 at 9:39 pm

I love this! What a great idea! Maybe you could add a hashtag with your names on it? Ask people to use the hashtag and tag the ship. That would be so much fun! I would love to share, and add a photo of whatever you decide to do to this post! Please keep me posted. I celebrated 27 this year!

must use command strips or magnets. if t is a heavy thing you can put one of the big command hooks upside down on the inside of the door and run a string up oveer the door to the frame. also put command strips on the frame so it does not bounce when door open

June 20, 2017 at 1:36 pm

Can you still decorate your room door in a Carnival Cruise?

June 20, 2017 at 1:43 pm

I didn't see anything that said you couldn't, Alex. I did see magnets in the store when I cruised with them just a few months ago. When in doubt, ask them. I wouldn't want to give you wrong information. Thanks for all the comments!

August 08, 2017 at 6:02 pm

yes but you have to follow their rules, no tape or adhesives except command strips and magnets, it must be flame retardant. no lights even if battery lights, only decorate the door and not the walls. must not fall off the door and cause any problems.

August 12, 2017 at 5:39 am

Yes, thanks for adding this Sandra. You have to be careful to follow the rules.

February 14, 2017 at 4:25 pm

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE SIZE OF THE DOOR IS?

June 20, 2017 at 1:37 pm

It's on Pinterest

December 26, 2016 at 12:21 pm

Like you said don't put anything on the door that you want to keep. I did have these cute magnets on my door and they were constantly missing. One night I was walking by another door far away and found one of my missing magnets. I know it wasn't theirs because it had my name on the back. On this cruise I was thinking about buying a cheap door banner from Oriental Trading and then adding some of my touches.

December 26, 2016 at 3:51 pm

Love, love that idea, Rose! I haven't had my decorations taken, but it's not surprising, especially if there are a lot of kids on the cruise. I'd love to feature your door here, so send me a photo! [email protected]

August 08, 2017 at 6:07 pm

I had the american flag stolen off my statue of liberty- the people across the hall then stuck it on their mail box. really, you didnt think i would see it there.

That's unbelievable, Sandra! Sorry that happened to you. Maybe it fell off and someone stuck it there? I hate to think someone would do that.

January 02, 2018 at 10:30 pm

I'm going to check out Oriental Trading for decorations for our May cruise -- Star Wars for May the 4th and something for May 5th (Cinco de Mayo). And then there's Mother's Day. Oh, the possibilities abound.

August 22, 2016 at 4:02 pm

How do you decorate if the door is wood not metal?

June 20, 2017 at 1:38 pm

Command post strips.

November 26, 2014 at 11:32 pm

Do you know the size of the cabin doors on a RCL cruise? We cruise on Dec 14th and are planning to decorate three doors. Thanks Jean from Texas

November 27, 2014 at 8:59 pm

I don't know the sizes, Jean, but I'm sure you can ask their customer service department. Happy cruising! Would love to see pics!

June 20, 2017 at 1:39 pm

September 17, 2014 at 1:42 am

Saw this and thought our boys would LOVE this! This is our first cruise coming up Nov 17th, Liberty of the Seas and, just found out there will be NO decoration through out the ship until the next week so that was upsetting being that I am the biggest Christmas guy around, dorkie yes but this is me. So, I think we might bring with us some fun, chessy multi colored lights for the cabin and maybe a tiny tree? Just some ideas for us to Kick Off Christmas Countdown! (??? right??? lol) Ideas are always welcome. Mike from Michigan!

September 17, 2014 at 8:13 am

That's a great idea, Mike! Get your boys involved! Something interactive on your door is fun, too. Like a whiteboard where people can comment on your decorated door or simply wish you a Merry Christmas. We had a blast with our "selfie station" and you could make it "Christmasie!" Can't wait to see what you come up with! Please let me know, and thanks so much for visiting!

How to Make Your Own Easy DIY Disney Cruise Door Magnets

Melissa Mortenson

Taking a Disney Cruise is one of my family’s favorite ways to vacation and definitely one of the best cruises for kids . There’s something for everyone in our family to do and enjoy. As a mom, I have to say that it’s one of the few times on a family vacation when I feel like I have gotten a vacation too! Our kids loved the kids’ clubs when they were younger, and adored connecting with other teens in the Vibe club as they were older.

Disney Cruise regulars know that decorating their cabin doors is just one way to rachet up an already wonderful family vacation experience. Here, we tell you where you can buy these magnets. Even better, we offer templates and step-by-step guides to making your own super cute Disney Cruise door magnets so you can save money and make the decorations all your own.

Stateroom Door Decoration Tips for Your First Disney Cruise

Years ago, a clever person (I always wondered who it was) realized that the stateroom doors on a Disney cruise are metal and, therefore, magnets will stick to them. In the years since, decorating your door has become a beloved Disney Cruise tradition whether you’re sailing on the Disney Magic , Dream, Wish, Fantasy or Wonder.

Where can I get Disney Stateroom Door Magnets?

There are a lot of places that sell magnets designed for a DCL stateroom door. You can find them on Etsy or Amazon . You can also make your own magnets! It’s super easy, and you DO NOT need to be crafty to do this!

Making your own Disney Cruise Line magnets is a great way to save money for your vacation! We have a free printable template for you and the supplies to create the magnets are affordable (you might even have a lot of them around your house already).

What Types of Magnets Do You See on Doors on a Disney Cruise?

There are so many fun ways to celebrate on your Disney Cruise; door magnets are just one of them. If you’re on a special sailing like the Marvel, Pixar or Star Wars Day at Sea, you’ll see a lot of themed magnets on doors.

You’ll also see a lot of seasonal magnets for those on a Holiday or Halloween cruise. We cruised one year on Easter and there were a lot of cute Mickey Mouse magnets with Easter Bunny ears on doors.

You will often see several magnets on the door, with family names. This comes in handy if your teens make friends with other kids in the Teen Club. That way their friends can leave them notes on the small fish clipboard next to the cabin door.

Other Ways to Decorate a Disney Cruise Stateroom Door

In addition to magnets, you’ll also find small whiteboards and fish extenders on doors.

The whiteboards allow families traveling together in separate cabins to leave messages for one other. (We used them a lot when we traveled with our kids when they were teens since we let them roam the ship with their friends).

Join our Private Disney FB Group for more tips! JOIN HERE

A fish extender is a bag or pouch (like a skinny over-the-door shoe organizer) hung from the metal fish next to each cabin door on a cruise ship. It has a pocket and people leave messages and treats for one another in the pockets.

This is the method I prefer. It’s more cost-effective as printable magnet sheets can be expensive. You are also more likely to run into printing problems due to the thickness of the sheets.

Lamination is inexpensive and easy, you can take the door magnets to your local copy shop to have them laminated, or use a home laminator. There are a lot of great ones on the market.

Also, using this method makes it easy to add letter stickers to your images to personalize your magnets.

How Do I Personalize the Magnets?

There are a few ways to personalize the Disney Cruise magnet template freebie that we have for you.

  • You can upload the PDF to an online graphics software (like PicMonkey or Canva)
  • If you have a machine like a Cricut, you can cut out letters from Vinyl and adhere them to the cardstock.
  • You can use letter stickers.

If you’re someone who’s not super crafty, I recommend going the letter sticker route. There’s not any technology to fuss with and you don’t need any special craft tools. Just a pair of sharp scissors.

What Free Disney Font Should I Use?

If you choose to customize your magnet using online software like PicMonkey or cut out a name with a Cricut machine, you’re going to want to use a fun Disney font!

If you want to go for classic Disney, I recommend Waltograph. You can also infuse a bit of other “Disney Magic’ into your design by using an Avengers-inspired font like Avengero. Or a Nemo-inspired font like Lost Fish.

How to Assemble Your Family Disney Magnets

Print out the template from our free download. The download contains several pages, you only need to print the pages with the images you’d like to use.

Step One: Print

Be sure to print the image on cardstock, so your magnet will hold up well!

If you want to personalize your magnet, you can use one of the options I mentioned above.

Step Two: Personalize

I personalized my magnets using letter stickers I got at the craft store.

SheBuysTravel Tip : Line up your letter stickers on a ruler first. Just place the bottom edge of the sticker on the edge of the ruler. You can rearrange the stickers and check the placement before you adhere them to your Mickey’s head.

When you’ve got the stickers in the place you’d like, adhere the stickers starting with the top, then gently pull away from the ruler from underneath.

Step 3: Finishing

To finish your customized cruise door magnet, simply run the image through a laminator and cut it out with scissors.

Adhere some magnet strips to the back so that they will stick to your stateroom door.

SheBuysTravel Tip : You’re going to need more magnets than you think you do! We also recommend taking a few extra adhesive magnet strips with you on your cruise in case any of the magnets fall off during transport.

If you have a hot glue gun, you can use it to adhere the magnet strips to the back. It will be a bit more secure than the glue that comes already applied to the magnet strip.

Where to Buy Disney Cruise Door Decorations

If you don’t want to DIY a cute set of Disney door magnets, don’t stress! You can easily buy some. Just make sure you order them with plenty of time for them to arrive before your Disney Cruise Line Vacation.

If you want a set of personalized magnets I recommend Etsy . There are several sellers there that will customize your magnet set with names or dates.

You can also find several styles of magnets on Amazon .

This really works for people? I was so excited when I discovered Avery Magnet Sheets before our first disney cruise in February, but when we boarded the boat and started to put them on our door they all immediately fell to the ground. Tried putting them on other peoples doors and no luck either. We bought some tiny magnets from the gift shop and those stuck nice and good. I assumed magnet paper just wasn’t very good and tossed them out. What did I do wrong? Could I have demagnetized them in my luggage by stacking them on top of each other? Xray machine?

Hi Matt, I’m so sorry you had that problem. Ours stayed on the door, except for one small one that my daughter had bent in the middle. I’m not sure if stacking them could have demagnetized them but I did separate each of ours with paper so you never know. We also drove so ours didn’t go through an x-ray machine. I’m sorry I can’t be more help but I’m not exactly sure why they didn’t work.

No worries, I appreciate the response. I guess we’ll just have to go on another until we find ones that stick 😉

Hi!! What size did you make the full size Mickey/Minnie heads?

They were just big enough to fit on a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Unfortunately we are moving and they are packed away or I would measure them (usually we keep them on the fridge).

What type of printer did you use with the Magnet paper? Also, did you have to laminate these or are they good right after printing?

I just used a regular printer (I have the HP Envy) and set it for thick paper. Once I printed them, I cut them out and they were good to go…no laminating necessary. Have an amazing cruise!!!

Hi- I need help wtih the minnie… I’m trying to upload it into Canva and it’s saying it can’t upload a PDF, but that’s how it saved nad I can’t change. Advice?

I’m sorry I didn’t see this sooner! You may have already figured it out but you’ll have to find a program that converts your Minnie to JPG. I don’t know if this works for you but I can also use my printer to scan something to a memory card and select whether I want it saved as a PDF or JPEG. If you can do that with your printer, that would probably be easiest. Good luck!

DIY Cruise Door Sign with Your Cricut Maker

free printable cruise door decorations

Whether you’re a first time cruiser or a seasoned veteran packing for a cruise can be quite the venture… there’s so much to remember! Clothes, shoes, sunblock… and a cute door sign to hang on the door to your cabin!

The endlessly long corridors of the cruise ship can be a little daunting and each cabin’s door blends into the next… so a cabin door sign will help you easily recognize exactly which door is your home away from home. Of course, you can always just check the number on the door (cabin #549 anyone?) but a cute door sign lets people know you’re here for vaycay.

There are plenty of options: from a full blown door panel to a large blown up portrait of all the cool people staying in the room. BUT like everything in my life I love this little door sign because it’s re-usable. Once you’ve made the entire sign out of basswood you’ll be able to use it for each and every cruise you take… just switch out the acetate with the name of the cruise!

The best part? You can grab the SVG files for FREE at the bottom of this post!

Let’s get started!

free printable cruise door decorations

  • Cricut Maker
  • Cricut SVG Files (at the bottom of this post!)
  • Cricut Strong Grip Mat (that’s the purple one!)
  • Light Grip Mat (that’s the blue one!)
  • Knife Blade
  • Foil Acetate
  • Craft Paint (White, Red, Sky Blue, Dark Gray, Yellow)
  • Black Permanent Vinyl
  • Transfer Tape

Step 1: Cut Your SVG Files

Ready to jump right into the project? Grab your cut files from down below and upload the SVG’s into Cricut Design Space (if you need help check out this post on how to upload SVG files into Design Space ).

The cut files are split into separate layers so that you can cut each material (basswood, acetate and vinyl letters) separately. There are also extra png files with different years on them so that you can use this sign over and over in the future (I’ve already made acetate layers for a fun European cruise I have scheduled for next year!).

free printable cruise door decorations

Once you have all of your SVG files load and are ready to cut hit go! I started by cutting out all of the basswood for this project since acetate and vinyl are both pretty quick to cut… and basswood takes a minute.

Make sure to load your basswood on a strong grip mat in the top left corner of the mat. Tape the edges down with your blue tape and make sure everything is secure… the Maker will do a couple of passes to cut all the way through the basswood so you want to make sure it’s held tight against the cutting mat.

Then take the four little white star wheels and slide them alllllll the way over to the right (like in the photo below). These little wheels help the machine grip lighter materials like vinyl but they leave marks in denser materials like basswood. (Trust me!)

That’s why your basswood will be 11 in by 11 in which is a little smaller than your average materials (12 x 12). Luckily sliding these little star wheels over is easy and then they’ll slide right by your basswood in that extra inch of space to the right.

free printable cruise door decorations

Now that you have your basswood loaded onto your cutting mat hit go! Your acetate and vinyl layers can be 12 x 12 but make sure to change the material size to 11 x 11 on the first screen … that way all the little pieces for the ship will go down to the second cutting screen.

Now you just have to load your knife blade and hit go! If you haven’t used the knife blade before it’s super easy (although it does take a minute!) you can check out my full knife blade tutorial here for all the info you’ll ever need.

Watch the screen and it will let you know how long each mat will take… these basswood sheets can take upwards of an hour to cut for truly intricate cuts (like this shamrock project! ). This little cruise door sign only took about 20 minutes per sheet though… pretty quick for a basswood project!

free printable cruise door decorations

Step 2: Paint Your Basswood

Once all your basswood pieces are cut out it’s on to the next step… painting! I am always painting something so I simply pulled a little craft paint out from my stash and sorted out the colors.

Yellow for the sun, medium blue for the smoke and waves, red for the smoke stack, white for the top of the ship, dark gray for the body of the ship and sky blue for the background!

I gave each piece two coats of paint and the basswood held up perfectly… this basswood is pretty sturdy. Once the pieces dry you can put something heavy on them to help the slight curl they develop but honestly they straighten out fairly evenly once they’re glued down.

Of course, once you start to put all the pieces together you can see how the background fits together with the little lock and key cut outs in the middle of the pieces. That’s always my favorite part of any project!

free printable cruise door decorations

Once all the pieces are dry I used glue dots to put the whole thing together! It went pretty quickly and held up beautifully (even at the bottom of my carry on!).

I did put a piece of tape across the lock and key cut outs on the back of this little guy but if I was doing this piece again I would probably put a piece of tape across the lock and key cut outs on the front as well. It will be covered by the big gray ship piece and would make it sturdier.

free printable cruise door decorations

Step 3: Add the Letters

Alright y’all if you haven’t cut the lettering and acetate layers now is the time! Luckily a light grip mat and a standard cutting blade will whip through those layers pretty quickly… then a bit of transfer tape will help you move the letters onto their new homes.

The 2019 will transfer to the acetate layer above the sun, the “Carnival Horizon” (or the name of your ship… since I doubt you’re all going on the Carnival Horizon!) will go over the acetate layer of the waves and the main message “Oh Ship! It’s a Family Trip!” will go smack dab in the middle of the main ship layer.

Right on the basswood baby!

Tip: Don’t forget that the acetate has a thin layer of filmy like material over the actual acetate to protect it from scratches… you’ll want to peel that off before you add the letters.

free printable cruise door decorations

So here’s the fun part… if you are only going on one cruise OR you like to make new, fun signs for all your adventures you can glue your acetate directly onto the basswood and call it a day.

Or just skip the acetate all together (although I think it gives the sign a fun extra layer)!

BUT if you want to make the sign re-usable for different cruises , year after year, the acetate layer is key. Simply add a bit of Velcro in between the acetate layer and the basswood layer so that you can change out the acetate for your different adventures.

Easy peezy!

free printable cruise door decorations

This way you’ll be able to rep each and every ship you sail on… and save the acetate layer for a fun scrapbook layer when you get home! Or if you’re not the saving kind of gal (or guy!) take the letters off the acetate and put your new letters back onto the same piece of acetate (instead of cutting a new piece!).

See how easy it is to change out the acetate layers?

The best part? The acetate is the last part… so now you’re finished! You can pack this little sign under your clothes or in your carry on and add it to your door when you board the ship!

I used 3M Velcro strips to add this baby to our cabin’s door and it was super easy! I’m not sure about y’all but I am in LOVE! Absolute love… I cannot wait to share this little sign with you over and over as we hit different ships!

If you make one of your own I would love to see how it turns out… send me a picture!

Have you traveled on a Disney Cruise before? If not, you might not realize that decorating your door is actually a “Disney thing!”  Many people decorate recognizing special holidays/events (birthdays, weddings, first time cruise), there are themed doors (Star Wars, Frozen) or there are family doors (put up a mickey for each member of the cabin.) We love Disney and loved themed celebrations and wanted to bring you these special freebies – FREE DISNEY CRUISE DOOR PRINTABLES!

Are you surprising your family with a Disney Cruise? Why not make this part of the ‘reveal’! Have them each decorate a set of Disney ears with simple craft supplies and then tell them that you’ll be decorating your door with them on the cruise! If you’re celebrating a birthday on the trip, cut a few triangles out of patterned paper to look like party hats and personalize your ears! There are so many fun ways you can decorate these ears and make them special to your family and the occasion. Don’t forget to make a space for them in your scrapbook. What a lovely keepsake!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Disney Cruise Line does not like tape on their stateroom doors, please print on cardstock and add peel and stick magnets to the back. Laminating is not a bad idea, as well. Disney cabin doors are magnetic unless you are in a concierge room, which typically has a wooden door.
