How to go from Hua Hin to Pattaya

travel from hua hin to pattaya

The trip from Hua Hin to Pattaya is about trading one of the most popular good-time resorts in the Land of Smiles for another. It’s about hopping across the breadth of the Thai Gulf, from the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan in the west to the region of Chon Buri in the east.

The multi-story hotels and manicured beaches virtually face each other, but 65 miles of seawater are in between. That means you’ll either need to skirt the Thai highways through Bangkok to make the trip, connecting buses with taxis, or wait for one of the rare direct coach departures. Let’s take a closer look…

Hua Hin to Pattaya by Bus

Bangkok to Hua Hin by bus

Time – 4 hours Price – $14 Comfort – 3/5

Some direct travel routes in Thailand still rely heavily on VIP bus services. The one from Hua Hin to Pattaya is among them. If you want to do this whole trip from A to B without stopping or changing vehicles, then the coaches are a good way to go. They take at least four hours in total, but usually closer to five or six hours because of the added time it takes to navigate the traffic around Bangkok along the way. There are at least two departures each day: One in the late morning and one in the mid-afternoon.

The direct bus has once again become popular since the boat from Hua Hin to Pattaya ceased operations.

Roong Reuang Coach is the only company currently running direct links on this route. It’s a relatively new addition to the lineup of long-distance bus providers in Thailand but uses very similar express carriages to all the other major operators. Expect two-by-two seat organization, airconditioned passenger spaces, dedicated luggage storage in the belly of the coach, and planned refreshment stops along the way.

Interior of the VIP Bus

Buses heading Pattaya way all leave from the main Hua Hin Bus Station near the airport. They drive north from there up the coast road, then skirt the ring roads around the Thai capital, then bend south into Chon Buri and into Jomtien Bus Station, which sits on the south side of Pattaya resort. To be honest, the route’s not all that scenic and you’ll spend plenty of time navigating built-up outer suburbs around Bangkok. That said, there are some pretty sections along the eastern gulf coast and under the karst ranges just outside of Hua Hin itself.

Hua Hin to Pattaya by Taxi

Phuket to Krabi by private taxi

Time – 4 hours+ Price – $113 Comfort – 5/5

Despite the increased cost, there are a few good arguments for hiring a private taxi to take you all the way around the top of the Thai Gulf and into the party town of Pattaya. First off, this is the most comfortable way to go. You’ll have your own air-conditioned vehicle to ride in from start to finish, with dimmed windows to keep out the sun, upholstered seats, and even complimentary water. Second, taxis can pick you up anywhere you like on the Hua Hin side and drop you off wherever you like in Pattaya. This is an important feature when you realize just how wide and spread out these two big resort cities are.

Convert your trip from Hua Hin to Pattaya into a sightseeing tour around central Thailand. It costs more but means you’ll travel in comfort and get to see loads along the way.

And even the price doesn’t have to be that daunting. Remember that $113 is the starting rate for the whole car. That means any families or groups of travel buddies making the hop from west to east together can easily share the total and pay less per person. Dividing between a group of four will bring the individual cost to just under $30 each, which is well worth the markup compared to VIP coaches when you consider the gain in comfort.

Bangkok to Koh Chang by private taxi and ferry

And there’s more…departure times in taxis are 100% flexible. These will leave when you choose, perhaps to match up with the end of hotel breakfast or even to link with an incoming boat from one of the gulf islands just off Hua Hin. On top of that, drivers are often willing to add on any stops you might want to make along the way. It could incur an extra fee but that does mean that you could turn a boring travel day into something special – the historic railroad town of Kanchanaburi and the ancient temple center of old Siam in Ayutthaya are both possible pitstops here.

All taxi offers can be compared and even booked in advance online using 12GoAsia , one of Southeast Asia’s most trusted booking platforms. Easy!

Hua Hin to Pattaya by Train

Bangkok to Hua Hin by train

Time – 1.5 days in total Price – $8+ Comfort – 4/5

It is possible to ride Thai railways all the way through the capital and out to the hedonistic resort town of Chon Buri province. Just expect it to be a long trip. Yes, the locomotives are a downright fun way to move around the Land of Smiles, but schedules don’t always match up that well. And so it is on this journey, which will almost certainly warrant a whole night’s stay in the big city before beginning on the second leg down to Pattaya itself.

If you’d like to explore some of Bangkok and travel slowly, we can’t think of a better way to cover the distance between Hua Hin and Pattaya than the railways.

The initial part of the journey from Hua Hin to Bangkok should be a cinch. There are around 11 daily departures to the metropolis, taking around five hours each. They’ll bring you straight into the Hua Lamphong Station. The good news is that’s also where the trains leave for Pattaya. The bad news is that they probably won’t be running until the next morning. The best solution is to grab yourself a hotel and explore the surrounding Chinatown – it’s one of the buzziest parts of Bangkok, complete with wet markets and night bazaars.

Interior Bangkok to Pattaya Train

Don’t stay out too late, though. The trains that go to Pattaya roll out of Hua Lamphong Station very early on, usually before 7am. They take around 2.5-3 hours in all, covering just over 60 miles of the track heading southeast down the side of the gulf. All locomotives will stop at Pattaya Railway Station, from where it’s a short taxi ride of 10-15 minutes to the main beach and the biggest hotels.

Hua Hin to Pattaya by Train and Bus

Bangkok to Hua Hin by private transfer

Time – Around 8 hours including transfers from train station to bus station Price – $12 Comfort – 4/5

To avoid having to spend a full night in Bangkok itself but to keep the comforts of the Thai trains, you could swap out the second half of your trip for a minivan or bus. The first 10 departures of the day from Hua Hin to Hua Lamphong Station promise to get you into the capital by at least 10.30am. Even with some delays, that should leave plenty of time to cruise across to the bus terminals and hop on one of the very regular connections that hit the road to complete the trip to Pattaya.

Hit the rail lines to Bangkok and then change to a bus to make the trip over the Thai Gulf in time for parties on Pattaya Walking Street.

The good news is that getting from the train station to the bus station that serves Pattaya is a proverbial walk in the park. Simply hop on the BTS transit system and navigate to Thong Lor. That trip across town shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes and puts you within easy reach of the Ekkamai Bus Terminal. Alternatively, you can simply hop in a taxi at the train station, but ensure they put the meter on before you start to drive.

Ekkamai to Pattaya Bus

We’d recommend checking 12GoAsia to weigh up all the departure times from the Ekkamai Bus Terminal to Pattaya. You’ll be pleased to find that there’s something like 20+ going every single day, with lots after 12pm, which makes them doable after coming off the morning trains out of Hua Hin. Most are in 12-seater minivans, which tend to be well air-conditioned and have plenty of legroom.

Pattaya is the fun-filled party town of eastern Thailand. It spreads along a series of glistening bays on the edge of the gulf, unfolding in bumping bar streets, wild night markets, and lux hotels. It’s a great place to pick for your next destination if you’ve already been kicking back along the sands of Hua Hin. Sadly, there are no flights and no direct ferries currently running the route over the water. That means you’ll need to put together either train-minivan combo trips or book onto one of the daily coach departures. Most trips will get you from A to B in half a day, but some could warrant a stopover in Bangkok along the way.

Separated by the Gulf of Siam, the two resort towns are connected by direct bus, van and passenger ferry routes. You can reach Hua Hin from Pattaya by train, too, but you will need to connect via Bangkok what means longer travel time. The overland distance between Pattaya and Hua Hin is about 350 km but as far as it requires to pass through the outskirts of Bangkok traffic can be thick and the whole journey takes between 5 and 6 hours if you travel by bus and costs under THB500. A ferry will whisk you to Hua Hin in mere 2 and a half hour for THB1,250 up.

The ferry makes one daily trip in each direction. It leaves Pattaya at 1pm and takes between 2 and 3 hours to reach Hua Hin depending on the sea conditions. Tickets cost from THB1,250 and up – there are VIP cabins on offer, too.

The only bus company that serves Pattaya–Hua Hin route direct is Bell Travel . They offer daily departures from Pattaya Northern Bus Station located in Pattaya North Road, 250 m from Sukhumvit Rd. Apart from the direct Pattaya–Hua Hin bus there are passing by buses including Yellow Bus which calls both to Pattaya and Hua Hin on their Rayong–Donsak route. Note that it is also possible to connect via Suvarnabhumi airport. Both Bell Travel and 387 Bus run regular buses to the airport (2 hours; THB150-270). You may want to consider this option if you are based in Jomtien in Pattaya as 387 Bus leaves from there. There are a number of van companies serving Bangkok–Hua Hin route. JKP Morchit operates from Morchit Bus Terminal (THB220; 4 hours); Malee Van have frequent departures from Southern Bus Terminal (THB180; 3 hours); Nor Neane Transport leave from Ekkamai (4 hours) and can bring you to your hotel in Hua Hin (THB280).

Though Hua Hin is large, luxurious and modern, it still possesses the charm of a seaside Thai village, so it’s a perfect place for relaxing and recuperating.  A popular getaway for Bangkok’s residents, Hua Hin offers the perfect combination of city life, seaside adventures, bustling markets and relaxing shores.  Depending on how you decide to travel from Pattaya to Hua Hin, your journey distance will differ. What to see when traveling from Pattaya to Hua Hin

The vistas and views offered on your trip to Hua Hin from Pattaya depend upon whether you travel by road or sea. Both beach cities offer several things to do for everyone. So, no matter if you’re visiting alone, in a group, with your partner, or with your family, both cities offer several things to keep you entertained!

From island hopping to relaxing days on the beach, elephant sanctuaries, temple visits, and more, both Hua Hin and Pattaya have these activities to offer.

The main difference regarding things to do is that Pattaya does offer more things to do than Hua Hin. Pattaya is a larger city and sees way more tourists visiting it yearly compared to Hua Hin.

Hua Hin’s beaches are nicer than Pattaya’s. If you’re a beach person, that might be a deciding factor in visiting Hua Hin over Pattaya.

Also, both beach cities are well-developed enough that each offers many shopping malls to visit. So, things are quite accessible in both Hua Hin and Pattaya, unlike many of the remote islands in Thailand!

Here’s a short list of the best things to do in each destination. Keep in mind this is only a shortlist, and there’s plenty more!

Hua Hin or Pattaya: Hotels & Resorts

Both beach cities offer a wide variety of hotels and resorts catering to all types of budgets and preferences.

From large resorts to cozy boutique hotels and many hostels, Hua Hin and Pattaya have it all regarding types of accommodation.

Hua Hin ultimately has fewer hotels/resorts compared to Pattaya, and that’s due to the city’s size difference. Pattaya also sees far more tourists yearly compared to Hua Hin. Regardless, you can find many hotels of all types in Hua Hin.

Pattaya is known for its hotels/resorts, and there’s a countless number of accommodations to choose from in the popular beach city. The best part about the hotels in Pattaya is they commonly offer hotel deals.

Before choosing your hotel in either Hua Hin or Pattaya, you should first decide which area you’d prefer to stay in.

three level story hotel with a pool on a bright sunny day in Hua Hin

There are three main areas in Hua Hin , all quite similar in atmosphere to one another. So, no matter where you choose to stay, the atmosphere is consistent with Hua Hin.

  • Hua Hin Beach : Known as the city center, this is the most lively area where you’ll find the most shops/restaurants/bars, and of course, Hua Hin’s main beach
  • Cicada Market : This area is calmer; it’s most known for its markets and luxurious hotels
  • Khao Takiab Beach : This is your area for those looking for a more secluded atmosphere, similar to an island. Khao Takiab Beach is known for its few hotels, beautiful beach, and serene, quiet atmosphere

Pattaya areas are very different in atmosphere from one area to another, and if you’re planning to visit Pattaya , I recommend you decide between these three areas before choosing your hotel.

  • Central Main Beach : This is the heart of the city, where the main beach is, boardwalk, hustle/bustle and popular Walking Street
  • Jomtien Beach : Very different from above, Jomtien is a calmer beach area, offering a relaxing beach area
  • Na Kluea : Located slightly north of Central Pattaya, Na Kluea is known for its markets, more local atmosphere and great accommodations

Hua Hin or Pattaya: Nightlife

Regarding the nightlife in both destinations, this is a category where both beach cities couldn’t be different from one another.

When it comes to nightlife, Pattaya is considered to be somewhat of an epicenter city for all things nightlife. A lot of Pattaya’s tourism revolves around its nightlife.

Pattaya’s bustling Walking Street is full of bars, clubs, and entertainment venues that cater to a wide range of tastes and preferences.

Hua Hin’ s nightlife is relaxed and laid-back, with more of a focus on beachside bars, pubs, and venues hosting live music some nights.

While Hua Hin doesn’t offer the same level of intensity as Pattaya, it still has a decent selection of nightlife options for visitors to enjoy.

TIP : Watch out for popular scams in Pattaya , especially at night. Some of these scams can also happen in Hua Hin.

Hua Hin and Pattaya share the same seasonal weather patterns. After all, both beach cities aren’t too far from one another.

Many choose to visit Hua Hin and Pattaya during the rainy season, and you can. But you should know that you’ll only experience a few sunny days and it may rain some days. Also, the humidity is higher compared to the dry season months!

Hua Hin or Pattaya — Final Thoughts

So, Hua Hin or Pattaya , which beach city are you leaning into visiting? It shouldn’t be a hard choice. Both beach cities are quite different from one another.

Yes, both offer many similar activities and share many similarities. But the atmosphere in each city is very different.

At the end of the day, determine if you’d prefer a more authentic Thai beach city experience with a laidback, relaxing atmosphere. If so, you’d enjoy visiting Hua Hin far more than Pattaya.

But if you’d prefer the hustle and bustle of Thailand’s most famous beach city, with many things to do and a wild nightlife, Pattaya is the place for you.

Personally speaking, I much preferred visiting Hua Hin over Pattaya, and that’s because laidback beach cities are more my type of atmosphere over those that are crowded and lively at night.

When I visit Phuket , I tend to stay in Kata Beach and not Patong , which is similar to Pattaya.
