Obtaining an associate's degree ( ADN ) or bachelor's degree ( BSN ) in nursing is required. A BSN is not required to be a travel nurse, but some health care facilities only hire BSN-prepared nurses. The staffing agency in which the nurse is employed should match the nurse appropriately based on educational requirements.

After completion of an accredited nursing program, successful completion of the NCLEX-RN is required for licensure.

Most travel nurse agencies require a minimum of one year of hands-on experience in the chosen specialty of nursing. Additionally, some agencies will only hire BSN-prepared RNs. International travel nurses should speak the language of the country they are to practice in, as communication is an important part of effective healthcare delivery. Nurses are encouraged to research agencies when considering travel nursing.

Are Any Certifications or Credentials Needed?

No additional exams are required for travel nursing. Based on the specialty, certification(s) may be required. Examples include:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required
  • Stroke care certification
  • Telemetry certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Critical care nursing (adults, pediatric, neonatal)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification

Additional specific requirements may be necessary for international travel nurses. These include:

  • Acquiring a passport and work visa (usually handled by the agency)
  • Additional immunizations
  • Learning a new language
  • Learning about diseases unique to the area

How Can a Travel Nurse Receive a Tax-Free Housing Stipend?

Housing is one of the most significant concerns for a travel nurse. There are a few options available, and it depends on the travel nurse agency/company regarding how accommodations are set up. Some companies provide housing (i.e., apartment, duplex, etc.). Some companies offer a housing stipend, or a fixed amount of money each month to apply towards housing.

First, nurses need to be aware of where their “tax home” is, as stipends are tax-free if working away from the tax home. Having a tax home is necessary to receive tax-free housing. A "tax home" is defined as the general vicinity of an individual's primary place of work (regardless of where the primary residence is). Generally, the IRS considers someone traveling away from home (i.e., their "tax home") if it exceeds one workday.

Different travel nurse agencies offer different stipends - it’s important to research what the living expenses are in a specific area to ensure housing is adequately covered. The General Services Administration (GSA) lists the maximum daily amount for lodging, meals, and incidentals with regards to travel expenses . The key word is MAXIMUM. It's not required that a company pay employees the listed stipend. In fact, some travel nurse agencies offer higher hourly wages instead of housing stipends. Additionally, the GSA rates are based on short-term travel - usually less than a month. Travel nurse contracts can last three months or more.

Are Nursing Licenses Valid When Traveling and Working in Other States?

Those interested in travel nursing may have questions about licensing; specifically, how are licenses recognized if practicing in another state.

Depending on the state, new licensure is not necessary. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) developed the Nurse Licensure Compact which is an agreement between specific states to recognize nursing licenses without having to apply separately for licensure in another state. In other words, a nurse living in a "compact state" (one which is part of this agreement) can practice in another compact state without having to obtain additional licenses. There are now uniform licensure requirements that must be met when seeking a multistate license under the compact agreement. States that participate in the compact agreement can be found on the NCSBN website .

If not part of the compact agreement, some states allow nurses to obtain temporary licenses by endorsement. These are valid for specific lengths of time, so nurses must visit each state’s Board of Nursing website to determine specific temporary license requirements. If extending the assignment past the temporary license time frame, nurses must apply for a permanent license. Permanent licenses are also required for states that don't grant licensure by endorsement and don't participate in the NLC.

Travel nurses have a broad range of responsibilities and duties, and specific tasks depend on the specialty in which the nurse is trained. General nursing responsibilities and duties include:

  • Using the nursing process of assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating to care for patients in a variety of healthcare settings
  • Administering medications, and fluids, assisting with activities of daily living and patient mobility
  • Reviewing and interpreting diagnostic tests such as lab work and imaging
  • Provide monitoring and oversight in all aspects of patient care
  • Collaborating with physicians in developing a plan of care
  • Assessing the psychosocial needs of patients and families
  • Recognizing and intervening in clinically unstable patients
  • Providing resources for patients and referring as necessary
  • Educating patients and families in all areas of healthcare maintenance and prevention
  • Working in assignments anywhere from eight to thirteen weeks (on average) in the U.S., one to two years if outside the U.S.
  • Learning various patient care systems/documentation
  • Providing immediate medical care and aid for large populations during times of war or disaster

Domestic and international travel nurses also have different characteristics specific to their roles.

Domestic Travel Nurses

  • Work within the U.S.
  • Typically work assignments that range from eight to thirteen weeks
  • Can respond to areas of the U.S that experience natural disasters or disease outbreaks

International Travel Nurses

International travel nurses should have excellent communication skills, should be open to new experiences and challenges, and should have a strong desire to learn. These nurses are responsible for performing a wide array of duties. As stated previously, the tasks an international nurse will have to perform depend entirely upon their medical specialty. Some of the more general or everyday tasks that international travel nurses will perform include administering medication, wound care, and providing emergency medical services and care. Since there are often nursing shortages in many of the regions that international nurses travel to, another general role of these nurses is to educate family members and caretakers about the appropriate patient and medical care. In summary, international travel nurses:

  • Work outside the U.S.
  • Typically work assignments that range from one to two years
  • Respond to areas that experience natural disasters or disease outbreaks, such as the Ebola outbreak in West Africa
  • Provide medical care and aid to underserved, rural , and remote populations
  • Usually, must wait for document processing before traveling

Travel Nurse Working Conditions

As with any career, there are positive and negative aspects to working as a travel nurse. Nurses can suffer from stress as they may carry a heavy patient load and have many critical decisions to make. Additionally, travel nurses may suffer from feelings of isolation since they tend to relocate often. Having a strong sense of independence and a support system available, even remotely, can help.

Additionally, nurses may work in high-risk areas that may expose them to workplace violence, blood-borne pathogens, and chemicals. Travel nurses must always familiarize themselves with and adhere to safety standards set by the organization.

International travel nurses can face different challenges. Travel nurses must be familiar with the country's laws, and geographic-specific diseases, and always keep their overall safety as a priority.

Despite these considerations, travel nursing can be immensely rewarding. Many organizations and staff nurses appreciate the help travel nurses offer. Travel nurses help relieve staff nurses from burnout, as can happen when working short-staffed.

International travel nurses are also highly appreciated. They provide medical care and assistance to many patients in remote settings who otherwise would have no access to healthcare. They help with relief efforts in war zones or after disaster events, which can be both rewarding and enriching.

According to the American Nurses Association, as of 2015 fourteen states had mandatory nurse-patient ratios . Nurses are pushing for federal legislation supporting safe staffing and because of this, if more states pass safe-staffing laws, nurses will be in even more demand. Travel nurses will help mend the current and projected nursing shortage. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 16% overall growth for nurses until 2024, which is much faster-than-average growth for all occupations.

Travel nursing has many incentives for nurses regarding pay and benefits including:

  • Travel reimbursement
  • Free housing
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Retirement plans
  • Assistance in obtaining passports/work visas
  • Choice of location
  • Selection of hours/shifts worked
  • Competitive pay
  • Higher-than-average pay for RNs

According to Indeed, the average yearly salary for a travel nurse is $75,109. However, since pay is competitive in travel nursing, some companies are offering salaries of around $100,00 annually for domestic travel nurses.

International travel nurses tend to have lower salaries than domestic, except for assignments in some middle eastern countries. This is because, for the most part, nurses tend to make less outside of the U.S.

Salary is dependent on the agency, and nurses should research each company to find the right salary and benefits that best fit their needs.

Now that summer is approaching, many of our minds have turned to vacation plans. Whether you imagine relaxing on sandy beaches, tubing on a snow-capped mountain, or taking a tour around a city, here’s how to prepare for traveling while on dialysis.

  • Have questions about traveling while on dialysis?

Many people who receive dialysis can travel while continuing their treatments; however, you may have specific requirements not listed in this article. Discuss travel plans with your doctor and follow their guidance. 

Once you have the green light from your care team, here are six ways to prepare for your trip:

  • Medications: Make sure you have enough medicine for the entire trip. Keep them in your carry-on, as luggage may get lost, and bring a copy of the prescription with you, just in case.
  • Insurance: Check with your health insurance company to see if they cover the cost of dialysis while traveling. 
  • COVID-19: Check the CDC travel requirements before traveling .
  • Activities: Plan activities according to your abilities and allow for time to rest and recharge.
  • Fluid and diet restrictions: Pack or plan to buy healthy and nutritious meals, snacks, and drinks that follow all dietary recommendations from your doctor or kidney nutritionist. 
  • Emergencies: Your personal doctor and the doctor at the local dialysis center will create a plan should you need to be admitted to a hospital while you are away from home.

Your travel-destination dialysis center needs to know as much about you as possible to appropriately care for you. Keep a copy of your records with you at all times and have your home dialysis center also fax your records to the dialysis center you’re visiting:

  • the dates you need dialysis treatment
  • your name, address, etc.
  • medical history and recent physical exam reports
  • recent lab results
  • recent chest x-ray
  • your dialysis prescription and 3 to 5 recent treatment records
  • dialysis access type
  • special needs or dialysis requirements
  • information about your general health
  • insurance information
  • where you will be staying in the area
  • a list of the medications you take during treatment and at home

Speak with your regular dialysis center about your travel arrangements at least 6 to 8 weeks before traveling- longer if your destination is popular. Some centers may help arrange your treatments or provide relevant information and documentation. You or your patient coordinator may need to contact multiple centers to find appropriate appointment times. 

Many people using home hemodialysis make arrangements for in-center treatments when they are traveling; however, it may be possible to continue with home treatment as usual. Check with your dialysis care team to see if you can travel with the machines, supplies, and portable water treatment equipment. Let a center know when you’ll be in the area and see if they can provide medical assistance if needed.

Additionally, most dialysis and equipment companies have toll-free numbers for 24-hour help. Write them down as they may come in handy. 

Traveling with a peritoneal dialysis system is often easier because there’s no need to use standard dialysis units. However, it may still be a good idea to arrange backup medical care.

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD): Bring enough supplies to cover the length of the trip, plus extra supplies as a backup. You may be able to deliver supplies to the destination for extended stays. 

Automatic peritoneal dialysis (APD: If your trip is one week or longer, you can have supplies delivered to your destination. Smaller cycler machines are also available, which are easier to carry on airplanes and use in smaller spaces like campers.

Traveling for Home Dialysis Patients

One of the primary potential benefits of home dialysis is the overall freedom and flexibility it offers—which may help make traveling easier for people on dialysis as well as their loved ones.

Traveling on peritoneal dialysis

People on peritoneal dialysis (PD) may have an easier time traveling because their treatments may not require access to a machine if they are able to perform manual dialysis exchanges, and the necessary supplies are smaller, more portable and can be delivered anywhere in the continental United States. Here are some things to think about when you travel on PD:

  • Pack an adequate amount of supplies and any necessary medications in a safe and easily accessible way.
  • Work with your dialysis supplier to have dialysate delivered to your destination.
  • Make a special fi rst aid kit to carry with you that includes two days’ worth of essential supplies to help prepare for any unforeseen circumstances, such as a baggage delay when traveling by plane.
  • If traveling by air, make certain that your carry-on baggage meets security and airline regulation well in advance.

Traveling on home hemodialysis Many people on home hemodialysis (HHD) have more choices than ever before with equipment that is more portable, easy to set up and supported with supplies that can be delivered anywhere in the continental United States. Here are some things to note when you travel on HHD:

  • If you dialyze with the NxStage System One®, you can take your portable equipment with you and continue HHD while you are on vacation.
  • The NxStage machine can typically be checked on airplanes as baggage. Check with your training nurse about using hard or soft cases that can be purchased from the manufacturer. It’s strongly recommended that you also call your airline in advance to check on their policies and restrictions for carry-on baggage.
  • If you use another type of HHD machine that cannot travel with you or you do not want to travel with your equipment, your home dialysis care team can work with you to locate dialysis centers and coordinate visits for treatments while you’re away. It is recommended you coordinate these details with plenty of advance notice.

Additional tips to help you travel on home dialysis

  • Work with your nurse , kidney doctor (nephrologist) and other care team members to help coordinate your trip and plan for different scenarios. Provide the team with your travel dates, destination, and travel destination contact address and phone number.
  • Regardless of your type of home dialysis treatment, having all the dialysis supplies you need is essential when you are "on the road."
  • If you travel with your own equipment and supplies, identify a few local dialysis centers near your travel destination in case you need additional assistance or support.
  • Call your insurance carrier before traveling to find out what expenses are covered. Coverage restrictions may apply when traveling outside of the U.S.
  • If you have dietary restrictions, pack kidney-friendly snacks . Many airlines do not provide meals, and airport shops and restaurants may not have healthy food options.
  • If you have a manual wheelchair, an electric wheelchair or a scooter, notify your airline that you are traveling with these items and will need "maximum assistance" at the airport.

The Iowa House has voted to set limits for the pay of temporary nursing staff working in Iowa hospitals and nursing homes.

A traveling nurse could be paid no more than 150% of the statewide average wage being paid to full-time health care staff who provide nursing services. The bill is a priority for House Republicans, who contend temp agencies are reaping too much of the extra money the legislature has provided nursing homes.

Representative Timi Brown-Powers, a Democrat from Waterloo, is a therapist at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, She said the bill addresses a big budget problem for hospitals and nursing homes. “It’s a morale issue for health care workers that have been there, stuck in there …working alongside traveling nurses making three or four times what they’re making,” Brown-Powers said.

The bill passed on an 80-17 vote. Representative John Forbes, a Democrat from Urbandale who opposed the bill, said there appeared to be some price gouging going on as health care employment agencies responded to workforce vacancies during the pandemic. “My concern is that if, in the future, we are putting caps or telling businesses how much they can charge for services, the businesses may not want to do business in Iowa,” Forbes said.

None of the House Republicans outlined their reasons for voting for the pay caps during the six-minute-long debate of the bill, which now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Thousands of farmers descended on Cardiff to protest against the Welsh government's new farm subsidy plans.

They were objecting to a major overhaul of farm subsidies in Wales known as the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS), which was branded "unworkable" by unions.

The proposals would require farmers to commit 10% of agricultural land to be used for trees and 10% for wildlife habitat.

The Welsh government said it was listening to the sector's concerns.

South Wales Police said about 3,000 people turned up at the Senedd.

Later on Wednesday, opposition parties in the Senedd voted in favour of scrapping the Welsh government's controversial plan . It was a non-binding vote.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, outgoing First Minister Mark Drakeford and Rural Affairs Minister Lesley Griffiths announced a list of actions they would take following talks with farming leaders.

They included considering an "evidence-based review" of the ways farms can help soak in planet-warming carbon emissions, and carrying out updated economic analysis of the new post-Brexit subsidy scheme.

Why are farmers in Wales ready to protest?

A requirement for all farms to ensure 10% tree coverage in exchange for funding in future has proved hugely controversial.

An economic impact assessment published alongside the latest consultation suggested the government's plans could lead to a 10.8% reduction in livestock numbers and an 11% cut in labour needed on Welsh farms.

Ministers have since said that analysis was outdated and did not take into account all parts of its new funding scheme.

But the figures sparked big protests and go-slow tractor demonstrations across Wales.

Supporters say the scheme's rules are more flexible than they appear - and are vital to help Wales fight climate change and nature loss.

For instance, fields used to graze livestock can count towards the 10% habitat target if they have a diverse range of grasses and wildflowers.

And native trees or woodland on farms can count towards both the 10% trees and habitat targets.

But the feeling from farmers at the Senedd was there was a disconnect between their livelihoods and the decisions being made in Cardiff Bay.

Abi Reader, NFU Cymru deputy president, said people had come from the "hills and mountains, from the valleys and coastal areas".

"We are completely united," she said, as she branded the subsidy plans "crazy".

Tom Huntley, a farmer from Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taf, said there was a real strength of feeling in the crowd.

"We've all come down today because the ministers are just not listening. It could be very serious for the future," he said.

Angela Windsor, a farmer from Moylegrove, Pembrokeshire, said: "We're not happy about this sustainable farming scheme proposed by the Welsh government. It doesn't include farming at all.

"For some people who haven't got any trees or habitat - they're going to lose 20% of their land."

Another protester, John, said he was proud of farmers coming together, saying: "All of us will have very different reasons for why we are going to what will be a historical symbol of unity in the name of the Senedd.

"A protest of this magnitude hasn't been seen since 1999. This tells you very clearly of the anxiety and concern that surrounds the industry and the rural way of life."

'Not considered, not valued'

The discontent among farmers in Wales has its roots in many issues besides the new subsidy regime - from the handling of bovine TB to the imposition of stricter regulations on the spreading of manure.

NFU Cymru President Aled Jones said in his 12 years as a union official he had "never witnessed such anguish in rural communities".

"There's a sense that they've not been listened to, not considered, not valued," he said.

He called on the Welsh government to reset its relationship with the countryside, and suggested the introduction of the new funding scheme may need to be paused.

"Fundamentally we have one opportunity to get this right," he added.

Protesters lined up wellies on the steps of the Senedd - Welsh Parliament as a symbol of future job losses, which they believe could happen as a result of these new subsidy plans.

The government's own assessment of the scheme estimates that, if introduced, it could lead to an 11% reduction in farm labour.

NFU Cymru said this could translate to more than 5,500 jobs being lost.

But the assessment added that workers may still be needed for other non-farm related work, such as management of woodland.

Wellies outside Senedd steps

The Welsh government said it wanted "a successful future for Welsh farming."

"We have had a seven-year conversation with farmers to design future farming support and we are committed to continuing to working with farmers to develop the Sustainable Farming Scheme," a spokeswoman said.

"We have been clear we expect changes to be made following the consultation, and we will continue to listen."

The Sustainable Farming Scheme consultation is set to close on 7 March.

Nurse accused of sexually assaulting patient at Kaiser Permanente Hospital

Police arrested a nurse on Wednesday for sexually assaulting a patient at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Riverside.

The allegations stem from a female victim's mid-January stay at the hospital, according to the Riverside Police Department. Investigators said 27-year-old Jacob Daniel Hartman sexually assaulted the woman while caring for her. 

Officers booked him for sexual assault charges, including sexual battery of an unconscious person. He was released on a $55,000 bail. 

"At Kaiser Permanente, safe and high-quality care are always our top priorities," stated a hospital representative.  "As soon as we learned of this serious accusation, we immediately cooperated with law enforcement and started an internal investigation.  At this time, the individual is no longer employed by Kaiser Permanente."
