Best Time to Visit Costa Rica: What to Expect Month by Month

This a tough topic. The question should really be: When is the best time for ME to visit Costa Rica? Yes, the answer depends on the individual. So while we can’t answer this question for you, we can give you some information to help you make your decision.

Dry Season vs Green Season

First things first, there are two tropical seasons in Costa Rica: dry season and green season. December through April is the dry season. May through November is the green season. The dry season is also the high season as many snow birds make their escape to the tropics, and there is less rainfall. While the high season is the most popular travel time, the green season is often a favorite among Costa Rica Experts. The green season typically experiences sunny mornings (great for morning excursions) and afternoon rain showers (perfect for a rejuvenating afternoon repose). There are many perks of traveling in rainy season like discounted hotel rates, less crowds, and more active wildlife.

Varying Climates

Keep in mind that the landscapes and climates of Costa Rica vary greatly by region. The coasts are generally warmer, and the highlands are generally cooler. As you move south along the Pacific coast, humidity levels rise. The Caribbean Coast is generally hot, humid, and rainy year-round, with a short break in September and October. Please consult a Costa Rica Expert on the general climate of your destinations of interest over your travel dates.

The beginning of January is a peak travel season in Costa Rica, as crowds from the Christmas and New Year holidays linger. It is also dry season in Costa Rica, when clear skies accommodate travelers. The beginning months of dry season are particularly appealing as the landscape is still verdant from the recent green season, despite reduced rainfall.

We’re still in dry season, and the weather remains fantastic. There is generally a spike in tourist traffic over Easter and the week leading up to it. Plan ahead for travel over Presidents’ Day weekend, Spring Break, and Easter. Hotel availability is limited over these popular travel dates, and some hotels increase rates over peak travel dates. Book early.

April marks the last month of the dry season, although it can last a couple weeks longer in the arid northwest region of Guanacaste. Travelers can still enjoy clear skies, although the vegetation, particularly on the North Pacific Coast, has lost some of its vibrant green sparkle after months of little rain. April is also historically one of the hottest months of the year. If Easter falls in April, you can expect a spike in tourist traffic over the holiday. Plus, there may still be spring break travelers, so you’ll want to book your vacation well in advance.

Green Season

The start of green season in May is a much needed cool off from the intense heat of the dry season. Temperatures begin to drop as the hotel prices and number of tourists do. May is a bit of a transition month, in which the rain picks up, but not quite at the rate of later green season months.

The rain brings out the best in Costa Rica’s flora.

In June, you’ll see a small surge in tourists as the kids get let out of school and family vacations start. Everything begins to look much more green as the rain brings the rainforest to life.

It’s green season in Costa Rica, but a brief pocket of sunshine breaks up the rain in July in what locals call veranillo , or little summer. Exact veranillo days and duration vary from year to year, and may even continue into the start of August. Afternoons are rainy with typically clear mornings (perfect for morning tours). The weather is generally good, and hotel prices low. July and August are popular travel times due to less rain, family summer vacations, and active green season wildlife. Some hotels increase their prices in these months.

This is the peak of green season on the Pacific Coast, but don’t let the rain keep you away. Your opportunities for spotting wildlife are best in green season. Surfing and rafting are fantastic. Hotel availability, prices, and service are at their best. Plus, there are no crowds. You may even find you have the beach all to yourself.

The end of November marks the start of Costa Rica’s busy season, as holidays and cold weather are a great excuse to escape. November is a bit of a bridge month, when the rain has slowed down, and the crowds begin to trickle in.

Wildlife watching: hawksbill, leatherback, green, & olive ridley sea turtles on the Pacific coast

The beginning of December is less-crowded, with difficult to predict weather. Typically, the sky clears up as the rains begin to taper off for dry season, and you can experience beautiful beach days on the Pacific Coast. In Guanacaste, the most arid region of the country, the foliage begins to turn golden. We enter peak season for travel at the end of December around the holidays. With less rain, there is more uninterrupted pool time. With that, hotel prices rise. Our advice is to book your holiday vacations well in advance to reserve the best hotel rooms and take advantage of any early bird specials.

One Final Note:

I feel compelled to state that I am not a weather girl, nor can I predict the future. I only hope to bring you information to help you choose your travel dates. The best person to decide when you should visit Costa Rica is you. If a rainy afternoon would ruin your vacation, visit in dry season. If you intend to experience the rainforest in all its green glory, the green season is a great choice.

Best Times To Visit Costa Rica

The best time to visit Costa Rica is from mid-December to April (the dry season). This peak tourist season boasts plenty of sunshine making it an ideal time for exploring rainforests and lounging on beaches. That said, the dry season is the most popular (and expensive) time to visit. Luckily the U.S. dollar goes a long way in Costa Rica no matter the season. You'll have to book your room and tour reservations three months in advance to secure a spot. If you don't mind getting a little wet, visit between May and November when prices are at their lowest. During June and July, rain showers pause briefly, and Costa Rica's forests burst with green foliage.

While planning your trip, keep in mind that the weather varies by region. In the thick forests of the Caribbean Sea coast and Northern Plains, expect high humidity and temperatures ranging between the 70s and high 80s year-round. Conversely, in the North Pacific, prepare for lower humidity levels, but temperatures that often soar into the 90s during Costa Rica's dry months.

When is the Best Time to Visit Costa Rica?

February 1, 2024 By Sammi 48 Comments

If you’re thinking about visiting Costa Rica but not sure when, then bookmark this blog post.

We will talk all about the best time to visit Costa Rica in this post, depending on factors such as what kind of Costa Rica vacation you want, how much your budget is and who you are traveling with.

Quick Intro

The best time to visit Costa Rica is during the country’s dry season or “summer” which is December through April. This time of year is also Costa Rica’s high tourism season thanks to the endless sunny days and high temperatures. These months are the busiest tourist times in Costa Rica.

On the other hand, rainy season is a good time to visit Costa Rica for those traveling on a budget and those who want to visit in less busier times. However, this means that there are possibilities of rain, rainstorms and thunderstorms.

Average year round temperatures do not vary greatly in Costa Rica so no matter what time of year you visit, you will generally have all sunny days.

Costa Rica Facts

  • Capital city is San Jose
  • In Central America. Nicaragua is to the north, Panama to the south
  • Official language is Spanish with many indigenous languages spoken. English is widely spoken in touristic areas like San Jose , Guanacaste , Jaco , Manuel Antonio , Puerto Viejo de Limon and La Fortuna .
  • Currency: the Colon. Current exchange rate approximately 515 CRC to 1 USD. Read about handling money in Costa Rica
  • GMT-6 time zone.
  • Drives on right hand side of road
  • Uses 110 Volts
  • Two major international airports : Juan Santamaria International Airport in Alajuela province (airport code SJO) and Guanacaste Airport in Guanacaste province (airport code LIR).

Anytime is a good time for visiting Costa Rica and seeing all its natural beauty! However, there are some very important things to know before you blindly choose a month to go to Costa Rica.

First, let’s go more in detail about Costa Rica weather because it is one of the deciding factors for when the best time to visit Costa Rica is for your trip. If you want sun, sun and more sun, then the dry season is the best time to visit Costa Rica.

Remember, Costa Rica experiences typical tropical climate with two distinct seasons: dry and rainy. Average year round temperatures do not vary much, but the amount of rain certainly does.

Dry Season to Escape the Rain

If you’re coming to Costa Rica to escape the rain or snow, the best times to travel to Costa Rica are December through end of April . These are months are Costa Rica’s dry season and known as Costa Rica’s “summer.”

best time to visit costa rica

For anyone wanting to escape the North American or Europe dreary winters, dry season is the best time to visit Costa Rica.

Key things to know about visiting Costa Rica during dry season

  • This is the high tourism season so it is the most expensive and crowded time in Costa Rica due to high volume of tourists and snow birds.
  • February is normally the driest month. March and April are the hottest.
  • Average day time and night time temperatures do not fluctuate much at all.
  • You have to book your hotels, car rentals and tours at least 2-3 months before your trip. If you are visiting over Christmas , New Years, spring break or Easter, book at least 4-6 months out. These are peak season times. Some hotels and vacation rentals get booked 6+ months out!
  • Temperatures soar well into the 90s F (32 C) and above on the Northern Pacific coasts in February and March. It is a bit cooler on the Central and South Pacific Coast and Caribbean Coast but it is significantly more humid. It is drier on the North Pacific coast ( Guanacaste coast and Nicoya Peninsula ) but with higher temperatures. San Jose, Central Valley and mountain area temperatures hover around the high 70s F (24-26 C) during the day.
  • The rainforest areas such as the Caribbean sea, Central and South Pacific Coast and Northern Highlands may rain during dry season randomly. We visited Dominical in February once and it actually poured rain for 2 days straight.

Rainy Season for Less Crowds and Cheaper Prices

Costa Rica’s rainy season is generally from middle of May – end of November and this is considered as Costa Rica’s “winter” or “green season” due to the intense lush rainforest foliage that bursts into life with the rain. For this reason, tourist prices are cheaper and the crowds thin out.

best time to visit costa rica

If you’re traveling on a budget, rainy season months are the best time to go to Costa Rica since rates are lower. Hotel prices, car rentals, tours and restaurants are a bit cheaper during the green season, particularly October which is the slowest month.

Key things to know about visiting Costa Rica in rainy season (green season)

Not sure if you should visit in rainy season? Read our tips for visiting Costa Rica in rainy season here.

  • Rainy season temperatures do not really vary from dry season. It does get cooler but not much. On average it is around 5-10 F degrees cooler than dry season.
  • October is the rainiest month for most of the country. May, June, September and October can also be very rainy in places like the Central and South Pacific coast, the mountains and Northern Lowlands.
  • On the Caribbean coast, October is the summer month. These are Tortuguero and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca .
  • On the coasts, a normal rainy season day is dry and cloudy in the morning, then intermittent rains in the late afternoon, evenings and nights. In mountainous and rainforest areas, it can rain in early afternoons or even mornings. You will still have sunny mornings during rainy season, but it may get cloudy quickly.
  • As it tends to rain more in the late afternoons and nights, places like Arenal Volcano National Park may close early or not allow visitors if there are lightning/thunderstorms.
  • You may need to rent a 4×4/4wd for your itinerary. Make sure to check the road conditions in Costa Rica. Some roads may be impassable or bridges may collapse for heavy rains in remote areas.
  • Some businesses may close during September/October green season months, have limited availability or undergo construction. Hotel prices are much cheaper and some tour companies offer green season rates.
  • There is a “little summer” in July where it stops raining and dries up for a week or so. This is normally around mid July. July is also a busy month because of families coming during summer vacation. Make sure to book your cars and services at least 2 months out if visiting in July and August.

If you’re visiting in rainy season, make sure to pack appropriately. Check out our guide to packing for rainy season in Costa Rica and our guide to packing for Costa Rica.

The Caribbean Coast

If you’re going to the Caribbean coast ( Tortuguero , Limon and Puerto Viejo ), it doesn’t follow the strict rainy/green season months. On the Caribbean coast, it is generally wetter all year round, except during September and October which are considered their “summer” months. It is also much more humid with temperatures in the high 80s F (31 C).

The driest month on the Caribbean coast is typically October. January to March are usually sunny with swells and good snorkeling. November and June are typically more rainy. October is the best month to visit Puerto Viejo or the Caribbean coast because it’s the summer month. You’ll be able to see all the gorgeous beaches on the Caribbean side with great weather.

best time to visit caribbean coast costa rica

The busy tourism months for the Caribbean coast are August and September, particularly Tortuguero as that is peak Green sea turtles nesting season, so there are lots of tourists that go to Tortuguero National Park.

Holidays to Keep in Mind

There are 2 times of the year where it is extremely busy and you will want to avoid if you’re on a budget or want to avoid crowds. These are what we call “peak season.” If you visit during these times of year, make sure to book everything at least 4-6 months beforehand!

Christmas/New Years

If you are spending your Christmas in Costa Rica , book ASAP! Hotels and car rentals go super fast and it is really expensive during these times. Vacation rentals, resorts and luxury hotels can book up even up to one year out. Places like Manuel Antonio National Park , Tabacon hot springs and Poas Volcano National Park sell out days in advance so get your tickets early!

Semana Santa (Easter)

Easter week usually coincides with American/Canadian/European spring break. That week is as busy as Christmas in Costa Rica so book your hotels and cars as soon as possible.

Shoulder Months for the Best of Both Dry and Rainy Seasons

If you ask us what are our favorite months in Costa Rica, we love the shoulder months of May, June and November, the transition months between dry and green season. National parks are not as crowded and the weather is still very good.

November is when the rain starts letting up. There is also a lull after Thanksgiving until mid December. May and June is when the rain starts but you’ll still get plenty of hot sunny and humid days. The crowds die out and we start getting good swells for surfing. Personally for us, the shoulder months are the best times to travel to Costa Rica.

The Best Time to Visit Costa Rica for Activities

Nature and wildlife.

Wildlife watching is great any time of the year but the best time to visit Costa Rica for wildlife spotting is the rainy season. The months of August, September and October are optimal months to see humpback whales in Costa Rica . For sea turtles in Costa Rica , May – November are the best months.

sea turtles nesting at Ostional

For scuba diving in Costa Rica , February and March are the best time to dive with the giant oceanic manta rays. However, water temperatures are very cold during those months.

If you want to birdwatch , January through July is the best time to see Resplendant Quetzals in the cloud forest such as Monteverde , San Ramon, San Vito and San Gerardo de Dota.

Nature lovers will have a great time visiting Costa Rica any time of the year, however the rainy season can make it a bit harder to spot animals as they will hide in the rain.

Check what are the best time to visit Costa Rica for wildlife like toucans, dolphins, sea turtles and sloths in our Costa Rica wildlife post.

Waterfalls become much fuller in the rainy season. However, with the extra rain, the color of the waterfall may turn to a murky brown.

For example, Rio Celeste is a sky blue river in the Tenorio Volcano National Park. Sometimes when it has been raining a lot, the river may turn brown. This has more chances of happening in October, November and December. The La Fortuna waterfall and La Paz Waterfall Gardens may turn brown or be full of debris during rainy season.

La Fortuna waterfall

Additionally, waterfalls may become too full. When we visited Nauyaca Waterfalls in August, a tropical storm just passed through so the waterfall pool overflowed so much that we couldn’t swim.

Water Activities

All adventure activities are fantastic any time of the year in Costa Rica! However, rainy season is better for water activities. White water rafting is super fun in rainy season as rivers are much fuller. However, if there is a storm, rafting tours may have to be cancelled so that is one risk of booking rafting tours during the rainy season.

Fishing is great during rainy season with lots of possibilities to catch tuna, snapper and mahi mahi. Surfing is amazing in the rainy season in Costa Rica thanks to the swells and better offshore winds.

Surfing in May

You can still visit a beautiful beach or two during rainy season. We do recommend to go in the morning to avoid rains in the afternoons and nights.

Best Month to Visit Costa Rica – What Each Month is Like

January & february.

Tons of tourists for the New Year, starts to decrease a few days after the 1st. The 2nd to last week of January is a great time to visit since it’s great weather, prices go back to normal after the New Year and still a bit green. Hot, but not quite as hot as the following months. Great time for dry season travel for both beaches and rain forest.

February is super busy and is right at the boom of high season. If you are visiting Costa Rica during these months, you have to purchase tickets well in advance for places like Manuel Antonio National Park.

March & April

Hottest times of the year for most of the country. Peak season is during spring break and Easter Week. Very expensive to travel. Super hot, very dry for Guanacaste, looks like a desert and waterfalls are reduced to a trickle and rivers dry up. Good time for the South Pacific/Osa Peninsula. Great time for Monteverde for birding. May start getting some rains end of April up in the mountains or rainforest areas.

May & June

Transition months from dry to rainy (aka green season). Landscapes start turning green with the first rains and temperatures cool down a little bit. Less tourists than previous months but still a good chunk. Very humid, cloudy with on and off rains in the country. Low winds.

Costa Rica’s Pacific coast gets more swells, making May and June awesome months for surfers to catch big barrels.

More tourists because of summer break up in North America and mid winter break in Costa Rica. Great weather, has a “little summer” with sunny days. Excellent for water activities.

Best month for wildlife such as whales, turtles and dolphins. Beginning of the month sees lots of tourists, end of the month starts dying down. Common to have sunny skies in the morning and rainy afternoons/evenings.

September and October

Most popular time for Europeans, especially on the Caribbean as that side starts raining less. Still great time for wildlife, rains a bit more often. Cheapest time to travel because this is the lowest tourism month of the year so you will find more empty beaches, laid back town centers and limited nightlife in October.

October can be very rainy for most of the country. Common for tropical waves and storms to pass through.

Still rainy but can start letting up a little bit. Beginning of November doesn’t have many tourists, towards the end of the month is when the snowbirds come down. Best time to see the turtle nesting season, especially the Olive Ridley sea turtles during the arribadas (mass arrivals) at Ostional Wildlife Refuge.

Rainforest areas and high elevation mountain areas still rainy. Coastal areas start seeing less and less rain towards the end of the month.

The high season generally starts around mid December for the winter holidays. Rain starts to let up during December in Costa Rica but you still may get some random on and off short rains. Rainforest areas still have rain and the beginning of December can still see some big storms.

For this reason, the first two weeks of December are not as crowded. But then around mid December, it will start getting crazy packed for Christmas and New Years. Very expensive to travel.

Very windy in December, this is normal and known as “Christmas winds.” By mid to end of December, the coasts see very little rain.

When you should visit Costa Rica will mostly depend on what you want.

So if you want:

  • To avoid the rain: Come in dry season, December – April for most of the country. October for the Caribbean.
  • To travel on a budget: Travel during the green season or shoulder months.
  • Get the best of both dry and rainy season: Come during the shoulder months of May, June and November.

The pura vida (pure life) spirit that characterizes Costa Rica is wonderfully contagious. It's one of the many reasons this Central American country is so popular. Travelers who yearn to slow down and be one with nature will find themselves at home among its cloud rainforests, scenic mountains and beautiful beaches .

With an average temperature of around 80℉ (26℃), it’s possible to enjoy Costa Rica all year round, but to get the most out of your trip it’s essential to know which season is best for the activities you want to do. Here are a few things to know about choosing the best time to travel to Costa Rica.

View from under palm tree of woman and child heading to the sea, Costa Rica

December to April: Best time for beach vacations

If your main goal is to spend time in the sun, plan your trip around the country’s dry season which runs from December to about mid-April.

Every day will bring clear skies and enough sun to enjoy the beach along the Caribbean coastline. Lower rainfall means it’s arguably the best time to visit in general, and also more attractive for travelers hoping to see wildlife.

However, this is the high season, the most expensive time to visit, so expect higher prices for accommodation and airfare. It will also be more crowded, particularly around the major holidays of Christmas, New Year and Easter. March is also very popular for travelers on spring break.

May and June: Best time for fewer crowds

May is the beginning of the ‘green’ season — meaning you can expect mornings full of sunshine, but rain later in the day. It’s the time when much of Costa Rica’s plant life comes into bloom.

This time can be slightly unpredictable when it comes to rainfall because it’s between the dry and rainy seasons. However, if you want to experience most of the more popular sites without large crowds, this is the best time to visit.

It’s also a great time to get a clear view of the Arenal volcano. Keep in mind the end of June will begin to see more crowds as the summer travel season starts for many Americans.

A closeup shot of a Sloths on a tree with the green leaves around in Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica

July and August: Best time for spotting wildlife

July and August are still within the country’s green season, so you can expect the same weather as in May and June. It’s also the perfect time for whale watching in Dominical or spotting sea turtles in Tortuguero National Park .

Trails, roads and paths may be muddy and slippery at this time of year, so bear that in mind if you’re interested in exploring off the beaten track. Prices for certain attractions and activities may be higher due to the influx of travelers coming for summer break.

September and October: Best time for budget travelers

September and October see the departure of summer travelers and the arrival of holiday travelers. You’ll find fewer crowds and more deals on accommodation and travel to Costa Rica.

This makes it the best time for those wanting to explore the country without big crowds and higher prices, however it’s also the height of the rainy season, so weather-wise it’s the least desirable time to visit. This time is not ideal for those looking to see more remote places due to the possibility of flooding.

August to November: Best time for surfers

Great surf is one of the main draws of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, and August through November is when you will see many of the biggest waves thanks to storm surges brought on by the rainy season.

While conditions may be ideal for experienced surfers, you can also expect moderate rainfall. November’s weather tends to be unpredictable too, so bear that in mind if you are planning outdoor activities as part of your trip.

Home » Blog » Costa Rica » Best Time to Visit Costa Rica: When to Go & When to Avoid!

Despite its small size, this beautiful country packs a tremendous punch, with lush jungles, mountains, and two coastlines. The weather varies significantly depending on the season and region, so to help you plan your trip, we put together this guide on the best time to visit Costa Rica.

Costa Rica

Stunning volcanoes, lush jungles, natural hot springs, several mountain ranges, countless waterfalls, two distinct coastlines…Costa Rica is home to just about every outdoor pursuit imaginable! And with a booming tourism industry that attracts both adventure-seekers and luxury travelers, it’s no surprise this Central American country is so popular.

Costa Rica is not big by any metric — in fact, if it were a U.S. state, it would be the 10th smallest! However, its unique topography (there are three mountain ranges!) creates many different biomes and separate climates.

Considering seasonal weather patterns, which are divided into rainy and dry seasons, alongside your specific interests while visiting, is super helpful to make the most of your trip.

We’ve been fortunate enough to spend a significant amount of time in this stunning paradise, so let’s dive in and break everything down to help you decide the best time to visit Costa Rica for your travel needs!

Psst! You’ll want to keep this guide to all the adventurous things to do in Costa Rica handy as you plan your trip.

When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?

If you don’t mind occasional showers, the best time to visit Costa Rica is during the months of August and September. Prices are considerably lower, there are fewer crowds, and you can still get beach time on the sunny Caribbean coast.

costa rica tourist season

However, as with any destination, the answer to this question is not so simple. With a widely varied climate based on region, the best time to visit Costa Rica also depends on what you want to experience on your trip.

Answer these questions to get started:

  • Do you mind a bit of rain?
  • What region of the country are you planning to visit?
  • Are you easily bothered by crowds?
  • Are you negatively affected by high humidity?
  • Do you prefer to spend your time outdoors at the beach or hiking?
  • Are you planning to do activities like whale watching, scuba diving or surfing?

Thinking about your answers to these questions is going to help you start to determine the best time to visit Costa Rica for your particular travel needs.

Our experience traveling in Costa Rica

We’ve visited Costa Rica in spring and summer

When: March (2012), June (2018), November (2018), March (2021)

Spring in Costa Rica

Costa Rica beach

Our experience:

  • While rainy season isn’t supposed to start until May, we experienced quite a bit of rain and overcast skies.
  • We mainly stayed in the mountain regions of San Jose and Arenal/La Fortuna.
  • Temperatures were cooler than we expected too, and we found ourselves wearing jeans and rain jackets most of the trip.

Would we recommend visiting Costa Rica in spring?

Yes. Just know that even though this isn’t the rainy season, Costa Rica has lots of jungles, and if you are traveling in the mountains and cloud forests, you can still encounter rain. Be prepared for all types of weather and bring layers.

Summer in Costa Rica

Rancho Mastatal Sustainable Eco Lodge in Costa Rica

Our experience:

  • Even though we were well into “rainy season” (May – November), we had great weather overall.
  • We traveled all around Costa Rica, from the west coast beaches to the cloud forest in the mountains to the Caribbean coast, and we noticed they all had their own climates, almost entirely separate from each other.
  • While we did experience rain, it was mostly short-lived and it honestly didn’t detract from our experience at all.

Would we recommend visiting Costa Rica in summer?

For most people, yes. I was really nervous about traveling to Costa Rica during the rainy season, but I’m so happy we did because it ended up not being a big deal at all.

Maybe we got really lucky, but the rain always seemed pretty short-lived, and we had our fair share of blue skies and perfect weather. Also, the rain means waterfalls are really flowing which is cool! One exception to this is that the Rio Celeste Waterfall can get kind of muddy looking during the peak of rainy season. It was still pretty blue for us (though not quite as bright as it sometimes gets).

If you think rain will put you in a bad mood, this may not be the ideal time for you to visit Costa Rica (though it’s likely you’ll encounter some rain at just about any time of the year if you travel in the jungles).

What to pack: We’d recommend bringing water shoes (like Chacos) that work well on muddy paths, a dry bag for keeping your valuables protected in a downpour, and a waterproof (not water resistant) rain jacket.

Fall in Costa Rica

Santa Teresa Costa Rica sunset

Amanda’s experience:

  • Our Director of Content, Amanda, visited Costa Rica for a quick trip in early November, traveling through San Jose to Santa Teresa on the west coast.
  • While technically November can still be rainy, she had pretty nice weather (and gorgeous sunsets!) for the entire week.

Would we recommend visiting Costa Rica in fall?

Yes. The fall is a great time to visit Costa Rica. Just know that even though this is the tail end of rainy season, you may still encounter rain. Be prepared for all types of weather and pack layers!

Costa Rica Geography Overview

Oxygen Jungle Villa Costa Rica

Costa Rica is in the southern part of Central America, separated from South America by only Panama.

At just under 20,000 square miles, the country is smaller than West Virginia. Yet, despite its small land area, Costa Rica feels far bigger due to its distinct regions, and diverse natural beauty with various mountains and volcanoes dotting the country.

Both weather and nature here are strongly impacted by the country’s physical shape. A curved land bridge, Costa Rica is 288 miles long and just 170 miles wide.

Don’t let its diminutive footprint fool you, though: across this small distance, there are two different coastlines and three mountain ranges with volcanoes running diagonally from northwest to southeast, plus jungles, marshlands, and very fertile valleys.

While there are seven official administrative regions in Costa Rica, travelers simplify things by splitting the country up into three: the Caribbean Coast, Pacific Coast, and the Highlands. Such a delineation aligns with the general activities in these areas, as well as weather and seasonal considerations.

Arenal Volcano National Park Costa Rica

Costa Rica is in a tropical region near the Equator so it doesn’t witness four seasons like many other destinations. Instead, there are just two: rainy season and dry season. This is true across most, but not all, of the country (we’ll get into that in more detail later).

The temperatures in Costa Rica are generally very comfortable, with year-round averages in the mid-70s. However, due to the topography, there is some substantial variation across regions — the lowlands in the Eastern Caribbean are hot and steamy all year, while it gets much cooler (into the 50s) in the mountains.

Costa Rica’s diverse climate comes from the fact that it’s surrounded by two oceans, has varying elevations, and experiences unique wind patterns from both.

During the dry season, approximately mid-November through early April, trade winds blow moist air from the Caribbean onto the coast. As a result, the eastern coast gets substantial rainfall but the clouds become trapped in the central mountains, so most of the country actually gets much less rain.

Costa Ricans often refer to this dry season as the “summer”, even though those moths are typically considered winter in the northern hemisphere. The association is more due to the warm, sunny days than the actual time of year.

In the rainy season , also referred to as the green season or winter, the direction of the trade winds is reversed. This wetter time of year lasts from May through November.

The moisture comes off the Pacific, covering most of the country in clouds and rain. The only corner of Costa Rica that remains relatively rain-free is the Caribbean Coast — opposite of the dry season!

Puerto Viejo Costa Rica

Below you’ll find a break down of the wet & dry season months in each region:

Caribbean Coast

  • September – October : Dry season; higher temperatures and sunny skies. Humid year-round.
  • November – August : Rainy season; Hot, humid, and abundant rain, although slightly less precipitation between May and August.

Pacific Coast

  • November – April : Dry season; warmer temperatures and sunny skies
  • May – November : Rainy season; hot, humid, and high rainfall

One notable exception to this pattern is Costa Rica’s Southern Pacific coastline around Corcovado. The density of the mountains here creates frequent rain year-round.

Central/Highlands

  • May – November : Rainy season; cooler temperatures, humid, and high rainfall

Stats on Costa Rica Weather & Seasons:

  • Warmest months in Costa Rica: March & April
  • Coldest month in Costa Rica: July
  • Rainiest months in Costa Rica: September & October
  • Driest months in Costa Rica: March & April
  • Most crowded months in Costa Rica: December & January
  • Least crowded months in Costa Rica: May-October

Manuel Antonio National Park Costa Rica

For most of the country, dry season means picture-perfect sunny days, fewer rain showers, and slightly warmer temperatures. Running from November through May, this is the best time to visit Costa Rica to enjoy the rugged landscapes, especially in the Highlands.

As Costa Rica’s summer, the dry season is also when the country really comes alive and hosts numerous cultural festivals.

Unsurprisingly, this also coincides with high season, when many tourists leave their cold winter homes to visit Costa Rica. Expect peak crowds from November through January, directly coinciding with major holidays.

As a result, prices increase overall and accommodation may be harder to come by. This is also the most popular season on the Pacific Coast, when beach resorts fill up and San Jose locals head to the western coast.

Best places to visit during dry season in Costa Rica

  • Visit Corcovado National Park to see amazing biodiversity — an incredible variety of rare and unusual animals!
  • Rent a car and head to Tenorio National Park for breathtaking volcanic scenery.
  • Check out coastal Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica’s most visited national park.
  • Explore Arenal Volcano up close, for hiking amidst lava flows!
  • Relax on beautiful Pacific beaches in Montezuma and Santa Teresa
  • Hike in the Piedra Blancas National Park to see stunning coastal mountains

Best things to do during dry season in Costa Rica

costa rica tourist season

  • Go canyoning in Arenal, the adventure capital of Costa Rica. This was by far our favorite thing to do in Arenal , and we truly can’t recommend the our tour company highly enough!
  • Take surf lessons in Santa Teresa, a super low-key coastal town, popular with Digital Nomads .
  • Go zip-lining. We’ve been lucky enough to experience this in several countries, and none can compare to Costa Rica’s ziplines.
  • Hike to the Paos Volcano, one of the deepest and most active craters in the world.
  • In February, experience Envision Festival in Dominical for yoga, music, and unbridled creativity.
  • Take a road trip . No matter when you decide is the best time to visit Costa Rica, this is the best way to experience this spectacular, diverse country.

Pros of visiting Costa Rica during dry season

  • Everything outdoors is at its most accessible.
  • The atmosphere is vibrant and joyous, with many people out and about and lots of festivals and cultural events.
  • Tours and other seasonal activities are operating their full, high-season schedule with lots of unique experiences.
  • Endless opportunities to swim, surf, and relax on the beach soaking up the sun!

Cons of visiting Costa Rica during dry season

  • There are noticeably more crowds, plus activities, restaurants, and lodging are all more expensive.
  • In drier areas of Costa Rica like Guanacaste, trees lose their leaves and the landscape is less verdant and lush.
  • Accommodation and transportation options book up way in advance; make sure to reserve as early as possible!
  • It can get toasty, especially at lower elevations.

costa rica tourist season

Costa Rica’s rainy season, referred to by locals as “winter,” lasts from May through early November. Rainfall increases dramatically, with many months receiving 6 to 7 times the amount of precipitation as the dry season!

June, September, and October tend to be the rainiest months, with a bit of a slowdown from mid-July to mid-August known as “Little Summer.” During this time, weather conditions stabilize. There may be a few occasional afternoon showers, but the sun shines more frequently, making it the best time to visit Costa Rica in the low season.

Additionally, Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast has an inverse weather pattern, so September and October are actually its sunniest months.

If you have several weeks to explore the country, an early August arrival with time in both the Highlands and on the Pacific coast, then the Caribbean side in September, would allow you to avoid the peak rainy season completely.

Best places to visit during rainy season in Costa Rica

  • Head to Puerto Viejo , one of Costa Rica’s most famous Caribbean villages.
  • Visit Tortuguero National Park, a protected biodiverse area accessible only by boat.
  • Learn more about native Costa Rican inhabitants at the Bri Bri Indigenous Village .
  • Explore Cahuita National Park, with jungle, beaches, adorable sloths, and an offshore reef!
  • Check out Limon for its markets, restaurants, and bustling seaport atmosphere. In October, it’s also home to the incredible Limon carnival!

Best things to do during rainy season in Costa Rica

costa rica tourist season

  • Visit Costa Rica’s Caribbean beaches, which get a break from the rainy season in September and October.
  • Go scuba diving! In places like the Cocos or Tortuga Islands, you’ll have the best conditions and visibility from June through September.
  • Sample the country’s delicious cuisine, a perfect rainy day activity! One of our favorite local dishes is Salsa Caribeña, a fragrant seafood coconut curry stew.
  • Learn and practice your Spanish. With fewer tourists around, locals are noticeably more eager to converse.
  • Make your own chocolate from scratch in the middle of the jungle, using ripe cacao pods.
  • Go whale-watching. Two separate groups of Humpbacks migrate along the coast nine months out of the year. The best odds of spotting them are from mid-July to November, and the Osa Peninsula is a great launching point for tours.

Pros of visiting Costa Rica during rainy season

  • Fewer crowds make it easier to really immerse yourself in (and enjoy!) nature.
  • Prices for tours, accommodations, and transportation drop.
  • Rainy season is the best time to visit Costa Rica for enjoying the laid-back Caribbean coast.
  • Landscapes are more lush and a richer, more vibrant green (especially central valleys!).
  • Waterfalls are at their max volume, making them more captivating and photogenic.

Cons of visiting Costa Rica during rainy season

  • Rainy season creates muddy trails and roads, making some of them impassable.
  • It’s harder to plan outdoor adventures, especially those involving the mountains.
  • Renting a 4X4 vehicle becomes more of a necessity and less of an option, making travel more difficult and expensive.
  • It often gets very foggy, making it dangerous to drive and limiting visibility (not to mention photo ops!) of gorgeous landscapes.

waterfall in Costa Rica

The “green season” is the term that both locals and tourism offices use to reference Costa Rica’s rainy season.

Rather than associating it with something gloomy, “green season” shifts the perspective and presents people with an opportunity to see the country in its lushest state. The entire country’s vegetation truly pops with an extra verdant green due to the higher rainfall, and seeing the jungle in this especially green state is incredible!

From May to November, rain typically falls over 20 days each month. Don’t let the wet climate deter you, however. There are still plenty of jungle hikes, beaches, and cultural attractions to enjoy across Costa Rica.

With the right packing list , this is still a wonderful country to explore — even during its “worst” weather period .

Many seasonal activities are still available during the green season. For example, the humpback whale migration starts in mid-July, coffee farms start picking their fruits in September, and the Limon Festival, the country’s carnival celebration, is in October.

Prices are also much lower overall during the green season, with even restaurants decreasing their prices by as much as 50%!

Best places to visit during the green season in Costa Rica

  • Visit the Monteverde cloud forest, which is fogged over year-round and makes for some incredible photos.
  • Head to the Carara Biological Reserve, home to many colorful Macaws.
  • Travel to Guanacaste, a much drier part of Costa Rica on the Pacific coast.
  • Check out lesser-visited hidden gems on the south Caribbean coast, such as the towns of Punta Uva and Manzanillo.
  • The La Paz Waterfall Garden, only an hour from San Jose, is especially beautiful in the green season!

Best things to do during the green season in Costa Rica

Hiking in Costa Rica

  • Visit a sanctuary to see majestic sea turtles. If you want to see the adorable, teeny-tiny babies, July through October is peak nesting season.
  • Spend a night in a dreamy treehouse! Rates are considerably more affordable during green season and the sound of rain on the roof is nothing short of magical.
  • Check out the pristine beaches and water sports in Guanacaste, on the northern Pacific Coast. It may be rainy, but the scenery is much lusher!
  • Hike through the jungle during a light shower. At easily-accessible parks and reserves like Manuel Antonio, it’s breathtaking to see the forest in its natural wet environment.
  • Chase some waterfalls! We went to Rio Celeste during the green season, and the spectacular backdrop of the super-lush vegetation is something we’ll never forget.
  • Visit a coffee farm to learn about the ins and outs of the entire coffee-making process. , Costa Rica’s harvest season typically starts in September.

Pros of visiting Costa Rica during the green season

  • The incredible verdant scenery — it’s not called green season for nothing!
  • This season has a distinctly less touristy vibe and you’ll have an easier time meeting locals.
  • It’s a great time to sample authentic foods, shop in local markets, and get to know the country’s cultural side.
  • The rare and unique opportunity to see jungles in their more natural state!
  • Enjoy a lot more travel flexibility; it’s less necessary to book accommodations and tours far in advance.

Cons of visiting Costa Rica during the green season

  • Since it’s rainy (and therefore, muddy!), most mountain hikes and other adventures are off-limits.
  • See above. Roads, like trails, get muddy, making them much more challenging and dangerous.
  • Fewer tours operate in green season, with independent travel much more the norm (not necessarily a bad thing, but something to be aware of!).

Best time to visit Costa Rica in our opinion…

costa rica tourist season

In our opinion, the best time to visit Costa Rica depends on what you prefer to do.

If hiking and exploring volcanoes is your goal, January through March is best, as you’ll have the best chance of avoiding rain altogether.

The rugged, deep-in-the-jungle hikes and tours are also more likely to be open, with less chance of impassable mud and flooding streams. Conversely, this is high season, which means higher prices and fewer accommodation options.

For beachgoers, July, as well as December through May, are the best times to visit the Pacific coast, while you may want to avoid September and October, when it rains almost daily.

September and October are the sunniest, most ideal months for visiting the more relaxing southern Caribbean coast, with ideal conditions for snorkeling and swimming. In the more rugged northern part of this coast, it rains year-round, so timing doesn’t matter as much.

The best times to visit Costa Rica

Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, Costa Rica at dusk

The tourism industry is booming in Costa Rica with more than 1.7 million tourists per year, thanks in large part to ecotourism.

Costa Rica's tropical climate and abundance of nature parks offer nonstop opportunities for forest and volcano hikes, zip lining excursions, wildlife viewing , beach time and more. Still, you'll want to be informed before deciding what time of year is best to get the most from Costa Rica's attractions and culture.

costa rica tourist season

Here's some advice for choosing the best time to visit Costa Rica:

When is the best time to visit to costa rica for good weather.

Costa Rica's tropical climate is warm year-round with microclimates that differ slightly in temperature but significantly when it comes to rainfall. As a result, the average temperature for the country overall only fluctuates between the high 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit; it's the rain that's most likely to impact your travel plans.

Costa Ricans see their year as divided between the high season (the dry season, December to April) and the green season (rainy season, May to November).

For the best weather, visit Costa Rica during the dry season, typically from December to April. During these months, you can expect plenty of sunshine, minimal rainfall and warm temperatures, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities and exploring the country's rugged beaches and national parks.

However, it's worth noting that weather patterns can vary across different regions of Costa Rica.

The Cordillera Central mountains, on the Caribbean side, face dry season in September and October, which is when most of the other regions see the majority of the rain. For the majority of the country, high season is a great time for beach goers, while green season is the perfect opportunity for experienced surfers and whitewater rafting.

When is the best time to visit Costa Rica to hike Arenal Volcano

Arenal Volcano and the surrounding Arenal Volcano National Park in the center of the country are among Costa Rica's most compelling sights.

Until 2010, the volcano was considered one of the 10 most active volcanoes in the world, with molten rocks and ash emanating from the summit daily. Smoke and ash are still visible but no lava has erupted in recent years. The volcano is surrounded by lush forests laced with hiking trails, thermal hot springs and beautiful Lake Arenal.

costa rica tourist season

The period of May through November sees the least precipitation at the volcano, so trails will be less slippery and temperatures should be pleasantly warm — usually in the mid-80s. Many consider this the best time to visit. (On the other hand, there are those who would say that there is no bad weather — only inappropriate clothing — and the most dramatic time to see the volcano is when clouds are on the move.)

When is the best time to see wildlife in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a biodiversity hotspot and offers incredible experiences and adventures for wildlife enthusiasts.

The best times to see wildlife in Costa Rica are during the dry season months of December to April. During this time, animals tend to congregate around water sources, making it easier to spot them. Additionally, the lack of dense foliage makes it easier to observe birds and mammals in the trees and along the forest floor.

However, it's important to note that Costa Rica's wildlife is abundant year-round, and even during the rainy season, you can still encounter a wide variety of species. This country's nature reserves are full of monkeys, birds, wild cats, amphibians, etc. If you want to see sloths, there's a whole sloth sanctuary for that.

costa rica tourist season

One of the experiences you may want to time carefully, however, is a visit to Tortuguero National Park (Place of Turtles). Also known as the "Little Amazon" of Costa Rica, this is where you can observe sea turtles nesting. Leatherback turtles nest on Tortuguero between March and May, while green sea turtles nest between July and October. In November, nesting is over but the babies may be seen hatching.

Ecotourism companies will take families on boating and kayaking excursions to see turtles nesting on the beach — from a respectful distance, of course.

When is the best time to visit Costa Rica to avoid crowds

Those who don't mind rainy afternoons will be rewarded in the green season with quiet trails, cooler temperatures and dramatic scenery. It's a trade-off for sure as dry weather makes it easier to get around and quite possibly get to experience more activities.

But even during the rainy season (May–November), most of Costa Rica doesn't receive days of constant rain; it's more common for mornings to be calm and afternoons to be rainy. So, embracing Costa Rica's rainy season may result in a truly special experience.

During this time, you'll also find lower prices for accommodations, tours and flights.

costa rica tourist season

When is the cheapest time to visit Costa Rica

The cheapest times to visit Costa Rica typically fall during the country's rainy season, which runs from May to November. This period experiences lower tourism demand, resulting in more affordable prices for accommodations, flights and activities.

Flight deals to Costa Rica

The cheapest time to fly to Costa Rica can vary depending on myriad factors, including airline promotions, seasonal demand and ticket availability.

However, September, October and November offer lower airfare than the high-season months of December to April. According to Skyscanner data, September is the cheapest month to fly to Costa Rica, with potential savings of up to 19% on ticket prices compared to peak season months.

It's important to remember that prices can fluctuate, and it's always a good idea to monitor flight deals and compare prices from multiple airlines to find the best possible fares for your travel dates.

How to save money on accommodation in Costa Rica

Finding inexpensive hotel rooms in Costa Rica can be possible if you plan your trip strategically and search for good deals. Some budget-friendly options include guesthouses, hostels and smaller locally-owned hotels. These accommodations generally offer more affordable rates compared to luxury resorts. Also, booking your stay during the country's low season, typically between May and November, can help you secure discounted rates.

Of course, you can always use your points to keep costs down. Costa Rica boasts several hotel chains that cater to frequent guests with rewarding loyalty programs.

The Marriott Bonvoy program encompasses family-friendly properties like the The Westin Reserva Conchal (from 73,000 Bonvoy points per night) and the recently renovated Courtyard San Jose Escazu (from 12,500 points per night).

Hilton Honors is another renowned rewards program, with participating Curio Collection properties such as the Gran Hotel Costa Rica in San Jose (from 41,000 points per night) and the new Botanika Osa Peninsula (from 32,000 points per night) on the wild and rugged Pacific Coast.

Travelers can also explore the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and its IHG Rewards Club , including the InterContinental Costa Rica at Multiplaza Mall (from 36,000 points per night) and the Holiday Inn San Jose-Aurola (from 36,000 per night).

When is the best time to go surfing in Costa Rica

Generally, the country experiences two main surf seasons. The high surf season occurs from May to November, aka the rainy season. The rainy season in Costa Rica is widely regarded as the best time of year to surf, and there are several reasons for this.

Firstly, the rainy season brings bigger waves, thanks to the southwest swells from the South Pacific. This translates into prime surf conditions, especially along the Pacific shores of Costa Rica. Additionally, the rainy season experiences less wind, creating a smooth and glossy ocean surface.

While Playa Tamarindo offers mellow waves year-round, intermediate to advanced surfers particularly enjoy the larger swells found during the rainy season. During this time, the country's renowned breaks, such as Witch's Rock and Ollie's Point, come to life.

However, it's important to note that the best time for beginner surfers to visit Costa Rica is during the dry season, from December to May when the waves are smaller and more manageable.

costa rica tourist season

When is Costa Rica's coffee season

Costa Rica is renowned for its high quality, 100% Arabica coffee beans. Experiencing the coffee season firsthand provides a unique opportunity to appreciate the rich flavors and aromas that make Costa Rican coffee exceptional.

The season typically runs from October to March, with variations depending on the specific region and altitude of coffee plantations. During this time, the coffee cherries ripen and are ready for harvesting. The harvest season is busy time for coffee farmers in Costa Rica, as they meticulously pick the ripe cherries by hand. It's also a significant cultural and economic event in the country, and visitors during this period can witness the vibrant activity on the plantations and even participate in coffee tours to learn about the coffee production process.

Bottom Line

If Costa Rica is on your radar, these guidelines will help you plan out the best time to visit this beautiful country. With many activities, sights and events throughout the year, there really is no bad time to visit Costa Rica.

When Is the Best Time to Go to Costa Rica?

While December through April is the most common target timeframe (based on the weather), January and February are quite possibly the most favorable times to travel to Costa Rica if you’re looking to avoid the rainy season and holiday/spring break crowds.

However, your time of year to visit mostly depends on what you’d like to see, what your budget is, and when you have time to travel. Visiting from May to November offers lower prices and occasional rain (but still plenty of sunshine).

Temperatures are typically between 75° and 82° year-round. It all depends on your goals for your trip, whether that be targeting the best weather or the best prices.

There are three primary travel seasons in Costa Rica based on weather: high/peak season, shoulder season and green/low season. Each season will affect the availability and price of lodging, types of activities available, festivals, and other events. Keep this in mind when planning your itinerary , whether it be a family trip , a honeymoon , or an adventure vacation where you have specific destinations and activities in mind.

Best Time to Go to Costa Rica (Chart)

Everyone should visit the rainforest on their trip, and you should expect some rain when going on excursions. It’s only natural! We recommend that you review the weather patterns and climate zones throughout Costa Rica. Travelers looking to avoid the rain as much as possible should plan their trips according to the appropriate weather patterns and seasons. It’s best to let itinerary designers guide your decisions.

Visiting Costa Rica During the Dry Season & Spring Break

The dry season (and tourist peak season) in Costa Rica begins around the United States Thanksgiving holiday, in late November. The peak tourist season lasts from mid to late April (spring break in the US). The summer or dry season tends to begin in January and extends into April.

The tourism’s peak season schedule is driven by school vacation schedules so that the entire family can travel together. It also happens to be right around the time that people from up north are seeking warmer, summer-like conditions. Aside from mid-November through December, this time frame coincides with summer (the “dry season”) in Costa Rica, which for the most part means a lot less rain during your travels through the country.

The weather for the last couple of weeks in November and the month of December can be hard to predict. There are years when the rain is prevalent and others when the sunshine dominates. While this time of the year is considered to be part of the summer season, it’s necessary to understand that the weather can be unpredictable during the end of November and the beginning of December. You must be prepared for both rain and sunshine.

Visiting Costa Rica During the Rainy Season

The months of September into December tend to be wet and rainy throughout most of Costa Rica. The Guanacaste region, along with the Pacific Coast and Central Valley, tends to experience wetter days. While the sunshine does come out, mostly in the mornings, this is the best time of the year to take a budget-friendly trip to Costa Rica. Not only are the prices lower, but there are fewer travelers here.

Contrary to the rest of Costa Rica, the Caribbean Coast experiences gorgeous weather during the months of September and October. The lesser-visited Caribbean or ‘Limon’ Coast has sunny skies, calm blue waters, and scorching hot temperatures during these two months and tends to be the location of choice for those visiting at this time of the year. A trip through the mountains of the Caribbean slope to the coast during these two months is one of the best-kept secrets and offers travelers an alternative to the rain.

Visiting Costa Rica and its magnificent ecotourism attractions during the green season can be a wonderful experience. Rivers run higher, the rainforest becomes a little more mystical, and even Guanacaste’s dry forests turn green and lush. During this season, throughout most of the country, it rains at nearly the same time every day. For this reason, planning activities and outings are highly possible.

hiking-barva-volcano-national-park

Driving can sometimes be difficult during the green season due to the lack of bridges and poor road conditions. Many of the more unkempt roads can become nearly impassable, although a professionally designed itinerary combined with professional transportation services can help you reduce the probability of getting stuck.

Visiting Costa Rica During the Shoulder Season

Costa Rica’s shoulder or “green season”, is the third season within the travel industry, and it is a wonderful time of year to travel. This term is currently used to refer to the timeframe from May through mid-August. Generally speaking, this time of year coincides with the summer vacation for schools in the United States and Canada.

Costa Rica Day Tours (Turrialba)

June and July are very busy months with family vacations and student travel groups. May and August tend to be less busy, attracting visitors who have flexibility with their travel dates.

The typical weather pattern during these months consists of morning sunshine into the early afternoon. The sun gives way to clouds and tropical thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. These storms can pass through an area rather quickly, other times they can stay into the night. A full day of sunshine and/or a full day of rain is not out of the question either but is not normal during these months.

The ‘green season’ offers a great blend of the summer and rainy season and while you should expect rain, you should get your fair share of sunshine as well.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

Here is a breakdown of what it will be like in Costa Rica by month. This insight will help you in your research, but you can also contact us for one-on-one help with planning your trip.

January is the first truly dry month of the Costa Rican dry season. The first half of the month is also great from the perspective of weather but it tends to be somewhat crowded and peak season surcharges can make the first week one of the most expensive all year. The second half of January is one of the most popular times for a Costa Rica vacation. Learn more.

February is the heart of the dry season for Costa Rica’s Pacific beaches & Central Valley (San José, Alajuela, etc.) There is almost no rain in the western and central regions of Costa Rica. In February, visitors will experience sunny & hot weather – perfect for your mid-winter Costa Rica Escape. When the rain comes, it typically showers in the afternoon, evening or overnight. The chance of rain on the Caribbean side is still fairly high; however, this region of the country still receives plenty of sunshine, too. Many say that February is a great month for a trip. Learn more.

March falls right in the middle of Costa Rica’s dry season. This is also the month for Spring Break in the United States, which means you may notice lots of family vacations and student group trips through Costa Rica. During the month of March, travelers can expect plenty of sun, very low amounts of rain, and a drier climate overall.

Sometimes, in Guanacaste, there can be small forest fires that release smoke into the air. In other regions, many trees are flowering, resulting in an amazing “color-changing” season for visitors. Learn more.

Enjoy the Costa Rican Jungle when Volunteering in Costa Rica!

April is pushing towards the end of the Costa Rican dry season. Temperatures are ideal throughout the country in April; very hot & sunny on the beaches with slightly cooler temperatures in the mountains and the central valley where San José is located. What little rain falls usually comes in the afternoon, evening or overnight. Many travelers are surprised to find that Guanacaste’s Pacific Northwest region looks more like a desert than a jungle. Learn more.

May is the beginning of the “shoulder season” which means the weather is changing from dry to rainy in Costa Rica and the weather is a bit more unpredictable. As you might guess, the weather starts out dry but by late May rainy season weather patterns are in greater effect. Especially with Costa Rica’s weather, there’s no way to predict this precisely. The rains begin earlier on the Caribbean coast, where it is generally wetter all year round, except during the Caribbean summer in September and October. May is a great transition period for travelers as they return to school after Spring Break but before summer vacation. The beaches and lowlands experience high temperatures, while mid-elevations, like the Central Valley & San José, are 5-10 degrees cooler. Temperatures at high elevations (such as Monteverde and Chirripó ) can be 20 or even 30 degrees cooler. Learn more.

June is a transition month for the weather in Costa Rica, but it is considered part of the “green season”. The majority of the rain showers in June fall in the afternoon, evening or overnight. There is plenty of sunshine in the mornings and the beaches are excellent early in the day. This month tends to be a busier month for travelers due to summer vacation schedules in the United States and Europe. Once again, you can expect to see many Costa Rica family vacations & volunteer groups traveling through Costa Rica in June. In June the rainy season usually hits the Caribbean a little earlier than the Pacific. Learn more.

July is smack-dab, right in the middle of Costa Rica’s rainy season. However, during July, Costa Rica experiences a short mid-year, mini-dry season. This “veranillo” or “little summer” as it is called in Costa Rica, typically takes place sometime between mid to late July and the beginning of August. Rainfall decreases significantly for three or four weeks especially in the northern Pacific and is replaced by endless sunshine and impressive sunsets. The entire month of July is a great time to visit, with hot sunny days to enjoy the beach and afternoon and evening rains to cool off so that you can enjoy the evening. Due to student travel & school schedules, there are still numerous Costa Rica family vacations taking place at this time of the year. Learn more.

July Beach in Costa Rica - When to Visit?

August is in the middle of the rainy season but there is a lull in the rain at the end of July and the beginning of August. This is especially true in Guanacaste. The Caribbean side is solidly in the rainy season weather pattern with some rain nearly every afternoon and/or evening. August is a great time of year in Costa Rica if you have some flexibility in your schedule. August tends to be a quieter month and there are often deals to be found throughout the country, which can be great for honeymoon vacations where couples want a more relaxed atmosphere, don’t mind a little precipitation and are on a budget. Learn more.

September & October

September and October are very rainy months in Costa Rica, specifically on the western side of the country and through the mountain ranges. Expect rain if exploring the beaches on the Pacific coast and  also the Central Valley. There will oftentimes be mornings filled with sunshine that succumb to rain later in the day, so mornings are ideal for outdoor activities. Extensive rainfalls and windy conditions are common in the Osa Peninsula and Southern Pacific coastal areas. During this time, lodging and tourist activities are often suspended until Thanksgiving timeframe. The Caribbean side of the country gets a break in September and October. These months generally bring clear weather especially in the southern Atlantic beach areas of Cahuita , Puerto Viejo , and Manzanillo . Learn more about the months of September and October .

The weather in November is a roll of the dice. In an average year, the northern and central beaches, as well as the mountains, will get significant rainfall on most days. They typically enjoy a pattern of sunny mornings and days with most of the showers in the afternoon or evening. Early in the month the southern Pacific and the Osa Peninsula are still quite rainy. Lodges and tour operators that have shut down during the exceptionally wet months of September and October resume operations as the weather begins to dry towards the end of the month. The end of November and the United States holiday of Thanksgiving begins another busy travel season. Learn more.

December is another transitional month for weather and it is quite unpredictable. The Central Valley usually enjoys the crisp freshness of the “vientos navideños” or “Christmas winds” starting in early December. The month begins slowly with lower prices and low hotel occupancy. The first two weeks of December are a great time to enjoy Costa Rica all to yourself. By the holidays, the high season has begun, hotels have a tendency to sell out at very high, peak season prices and excursions and adventures are fully booked. Learn more.

Visiting Costa Rica During the Holidays

The super-high season for tourism has little to do with the weather in Costa Rica, but more with demand in the country based on vacation schedules for foreigners and visitors.

The two to three weeks around Christmas & New Year’s are extremely busy for the travel industry in Costa Rica. Oftentimes demand exceeds supply during this timeframe and people who start their planning later are left with few or no options for their trip. For this reason alone, if you want to plan a Christmas vacation or New Year’s Trip – start early! Easter Break or Semana Santa also experiences a bustle, but for the most part, super-peak season encompasses the holiday break in December & January. In general, visiting during the high and super-high seasons means that prices will be higher; however, much of the pricing compares favorably to many other tropical tourist destinations throughout the world during this time period, such as Hawaii.

Many hotels, activities, and points of interest might be slightly more crowded, but Costa Rica has a plethora of amazing tour options to choose from within close proximity no matter where you are in the country. In many cases, certain parks or attractions limit the number of visitors allowed to avoid an overcrowded or unenjoyable experience or for conservation purposes.

So, When Should You Plan Your Trip?

We can answer that question in so many different ways! It all depends on what you envision for your dream vacation in Costa Rica. We at Costa Rica Escapes are experts when it comes to enjoying this beautiful country, so let us help you plan the perfect trip at the perfect time for you.

When’s the best time to go to Costa Rica? First, you need to understand the country’s 3 distinct climates

costa rica tourist season

Before we get into the nitty gritty of the best time to visit Costa Rica, it’s helpful to know the difference between the country’s three major regions.

Region 1: The Pacific coast

Costa Rica’s sunny northern Pacific coast sees the bulk of the country’s tourism because the weather is glorious. This is especially true during the dry season, which runs from December to April for most of the coast. During this period, expect minimal cloud cover and rain, and temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the low-90s — perfect for beach days.

The rainy season runs from May to November, but this can still be a great time to visit Costa Rica. Most mornings are still sunny and temperate, with showers or storms mostly occurring in the afternoon.

The southern half of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, which includes the Osa Peninsula and Manuel Antonio National Park, is notably wetter throughout the year. But if you’re staying at a Costa Rica jungle resort , we find that the rain enhances the gorgeous rainforest experience.

Region 2: Central Valley & Highlands

If you’re looking for a breathtaking escape into nature, Costa Rica’s central regions — which include the Central Valley and Highlands — are an excellent destination almost any time of the year. Generally, these regions enjoy mild, spring-like temperatures all year.

The rainy and dry seasons here loosely match the Pacific coast’s, but it’s worth noting that because of the central regions’ varying elevations, there’s a lot more variety in terms of humidity, rain and temperature.

Some of the coolest natural landmarks in Costa Rica are native to this region, like Arenal Volcano and the magical Monteverde biological preserve: a “cloud forest” marked by extremely low cloud cover and an almost smoky, ethereal appearance.

Want to check out the Central Valley or Highlands for yourself? Connect with Fora to book and plan your Costa Rica vacation.

Region 3: The Caribbean coast

Known for its chill, bohemian vibe, Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast is for travelers who want to kick back and relax. The weather is a bit warmer on average, and it’s more humid. But it’s also stunningly beautiful and lush all year — because unlike the Pacific and central regions, Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast doesn’t have a true dry season.

It does rain slightly less here from February to April, but there’s a minimal difference. Despite the frequent rainfall, the Caribbean coast still offers beautiful beaches and unique wildlife encounters (like sea turtles!) so it’s every bit as worthy a destination as the other regions if you don’t mind a little rain during your trip. (Otherwise, the best time to go Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast is during early spring.)

Check out the best Caribbean Costa Rica resorts if you’re interested in staying in this gorgeous region.

When is Costa Rica’s rainy (or “green”) season?

Costa Rica’s rainy or “green” season runs from May to November in the Pacific and central regions, with the southern half of both regions receiving a bit more rain on average.

Rainfall is common throughout the year on the Caribbean coast, however. So if you want to avoid excessive rain, the best time to go to Costa Rica extends between December and May on the northwest Pacific coast.

The best time to go to Costa Rica: month-by-month breakdown

costa rica tourist season

Here’s a month-by-month breakdown of the best times to go to Costa Rica.

January & February: the busiest months in Costa Rica

January and February are peak travel months in Costa Rica. The weather around the country is gorgeous, with less rain and comfortable temperatures. And because of the international crowd, Costa Rica nightlife hits a fever pitch.

Several of the country’s coolest cultural festivals are held during these months, too, like las Fiestas de Palmeras and The Envision Festival , both of which vibrantly celebrate Costa Rica’s traditions.

Finally, the potential wildlife encounters during these months are particularly exciting. Tropical birds are at their most lively and humpback whales can be seen migrating north on the Pacific coast.

March & April: the hottest months on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast

March and April are only slightly less busy than January and February because many countries around the world are on spring break.

The Pacific coast sees its hottest temperatures of the year (low 90s, on average), but this only makes beaches and rainforests more lovely to explore (or relax on).

Connect with Fora for the lowdown on the coolest things to do this time of year in Costa Rica.

May, June, July & August: crowds and prices drop with the rainy season, but ecotourists and surfers can take advantage

May and June kick off the best time to go to Costa Rica if you want to avoid crowds and save a little money without sacrificing too much of what makes the country so awesome to visit. The rainy season is usually in full swing by early-to-mid May (except for along the Caribbean coast, where it rains regularly all year), so tourism sees a sharp decline over these four months.

If you’re interested in nature escapes and adventure, though, this is the best time of the year to visit Costa Rica because the rains bring a whole new level of greenery to the country’s rainforests and parks. As the rainy season reaches full blast, rivers and waterfalls create a magical atmosphere for sightseeing and watersports.

And speaking of watersports, ocean swells and fewer crowds create gnarly conditions for surfers of all skill levels. And these conditions only get better as summer progresses.

In the meantime, check out these guides to a Costa Rica girls’ trip or a Costa Rica bachelorette trip for some inspiration.

September & October: shoulder season & the best time to go to Costa Rica to see turtles

Travel to Costa Rica reaches a relative low in September and October but is no less incredible. You can generally find the best prices on accommodations ( connect with Fora to plan and book your stay) and experiences, and ocean conditions are still great for watersports. Best of all, this is turtle hatching season on the Caribbean coast, with tens of thousands of baby sea turtles beginning their mad dash to the Atlantic.

The only downside is that the rainy season generally reaches its peak during this period, so if you’re not keen on getting drenched, you may want to wait another month or so.

November & December: the rainy season dwindles, surf season peaks and a festive spirit takes hold

By November, the rainy season is beginning to taper off, arguably leading to the best time to go to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. On the opposite coast, conditions in the Caribbean Sea make beaches unusually clear for scuba diving and snorkeling.

November also kicks off Costa Rica’s holiday season, lending the country a joyful ambiance with tons of festivities.

The best time to go to Costa Rica for specific experiences

costa rica tourist season

Wondering about the best time to go to Costa Rica for X , Y or Z ? We have you covered.

Is there a “best time to go to Costa Rica for good weather?”

Yes and no. It’s probably better to ask if there’s a good time to go to Costa Rica to avoid the rain, which would be December through April on the west coast and in the central regions (it always rains on the Caribbean coast). That said, even during the rainy season, certain places on the west coast, like the gorgeous Las Catalinas, only see light rainfall (check out our Las Catalinas itinerary ).

Otherwise, Costa Rica generally has great weather all year long. For personalized recommendations, book and plan your trip with Fora .

When’s the best time to visit Costa Rica’s cloud forests?

This varies by forest, unfortunately. Many of Costa Rica’s cloud forests have unique weather patterns because of their varying elevations and proximity to either ocean. If you let us know which forest you’re most interested in, we can hook you up with the best places to stay in either region. (Check out some amazing Costa Rica jungle resorts , in the meantime.)

What are the best months to observe Costa Rica’s wildlife?

Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, so you’re going to see a lot of nature no matter when you visit. But if you want to know the absolute best time to go to Costa Rica to see its bountiful wildlife… it still depends .

You’re more likely to notice wildlife during the dry season since a lack of rainfall improves visibility. However, wildlife activity rises and falls throughout the year, and rainfall is only one of dozens of factors that impact wildlife activity.

If there are particular critters you’d like to see — vibrant poison dart frogs (don’t touch!), adorable white-faced capuchins, goofy three-toed sloths, water-skimming green basilisks (not to be confused with Hogwarts -dwelling serpents)...the list goes on — we can do the legwork of finding out the best time to go.

Check out our Costa Rica nature travel guide for an example itinerary.

Is there a best time to go to the beach in Costa Rica? What about the best time for surfing?

Costa Rica’s picture-perfect beaches are worth visiting virtually any time of year. Of course, they do get more crowded during the dry season, which coincides with peak travel season.

As for surfing, the best time to go — depending on your skill level — is November or December, between peak rainy season and the incoming dry season. The rainy season itself is also great for surfing because there are fewer crowds and the ocean swells create consistent waves.

Want privacy? Book your trip with Fora to unlock sweet perks at the best resorts in Costa Rica for couples .

When should you travel to Costa Rica to avoid crowds? Is this the most affordable time to visit Costa Rica?

The rainy season, and particularly September and October, is the best time to go to Costa Rica if you want to avoid crowds and save money on the best accommodations. The best part is that even though it rains nearly every day during Costa Rica’s rainy season, the mornings are usually clear, so you can still enjoy adventures.

Pro tip: complimentary room upgrades are generally more likely if you stay during the low or off season.

Best Times to Visit Costa Rica

Best times to visit Costa Rica

Home / Costa Rica / Best Times to Visit

The best time to visit Costa Rica depends on two things: weather and where you go.

Costa Rica officially has two seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. But the timing of those seasons varies throughout the country.

When it’s rainy on the Pacific coast, it’s dry on the Caribbean coast — and vice versa. Depending on microclimates , the dry season can also last longer in some places.

The Good News: no matter when you visit, there’s always someplace with great weather in Costa Rica.

The Bad News: without proper planning, it’s easy to get caught in the rain.

Planning is also essential to avoid the crowds. Costa Rica’s most popular destinations are most crowded during the high season, which runs from December through April. Even in the high season, however, there are plenty of great hidden beaches and national parks where few tourists go.

This guide shows you the best times to visit Costa Rica. For detailed descriptions of the best destinations, check out my full-color guidebook Costa Rica: The Complete Guide .

Summer in Costa Rica

Costa Rican Summer December, January, February, March, April

December through April is the dry season in Costa Rica, when much of the country enjoys sunny days with little rain. In Costa Rica, these months are referred to as verano (“summer”).

Not surprisingly, Costa Rican summer is also peak travel season. The busiest weeks are Christmas and Easter, when many hotels charge “peak season” prices. If you visit during peak season, make your hotel reservations in far in advance as possible. December through February is also coffee picking season, making it a great time for a coffee tour.

January through March are the best months to visit the South Pacific. This lush, beautiful region experiences a longer rainy season — and a rainier dry season — than the rest of the Pacific coast.

Northwest Costa Rica, by contrast, can go months without a drop of rain. The downside: the final months of the dry season can be brutally dry in northwest Costa Rica. Many trees drop their leaves and dirt roads become extremely dusty.

Over on the Caribbean coast — one of the rainiest regions in Costa Rica — February and March are relatively drier months.

Boyeros (“Oxcart drivers”) are one of Costa Rica’s most iconic cultural figures. For decades they guided colorfully painted ox carts filled with coffee to coastal ports. Although trucks transport coffee today, Costa Rica still celebrates its Boyero heritage with oxcart parades. Costa Rica’s most famous Boyero parade is held the second Sunday in March in the mountain town of San Antonio de Escazú.

Día de San José – March 19

March 19 is the day of Saint John, honoring the patron saint of Costa Rica’s capital and largest city. Special masses are held throughout the country.

Día de Juan Santamaría – April 11

Winter in Costa Rica, hammock and sunset

Costa Rican Winter May, June, July, August

Costa Rica’s rainy season (aka “green season”) officially starts in May. Costa Ricans refer to the rainy season as invierno (“winter”).

Rainy season is also when hotels offer low-season discounts, which are up to 30% cheaper than high season rates.

But here’s a secret:

Costa Rica’s six-month rainy season starts soft and gradually builds over time. The start of the rainy season is often not very rainy. May through August is also considered the “light” rainy season, which is far less rainy than the true depths of the rainy season in September and October. From May through August you can expect clear, sunny mornings with afternoon showers.

This is a great time to visit northwest Costa Rica — the driest part of the country. You can enjoy the region’s terrific beaches without the crowds.

In southwest Costa Rica — the rainiest part of the country — May through August means regular afternoon rains. But mornings are generally sunny. If you don’t mind waking up early, there’s still plenty to see and do.

That said, you could always get lucky and hit a stretch of sunny weather. Veranillo (“little summer”) is a dry weather phenomenon that brings several weeks of sunshine to the Pacific coast. The exact timing of veranillo shifts from year to year, but it often occurs around mid- to late-July. Occasionally it can stretch into early August. Veranillo is most pronounced in the northern Pacific coast. It has little to no effect in the southern Pacific coast.

Holidays & Festivals in May, June, July, August

Workers day (labor day) – may 1.

This national holiday is a time for workers to relax and/or protest at parades/marches held throughout Costa Rica.

Fiesta de la Virgen del Mar – mid-July

This nautical festival, held in mid-July, features a boat parade that honors the patron saint of the sea. Held in Puntarenas and Playa del Coco.

Dia de Guanacaste – July 25

“Guanacaste Day” celebrates Costa Rica’s annexation of the northwest province of Guanacaste from Nicaragua in 1824. Dances and horse parades are held throughout the province. The largest celebration is in the town of Liberia.

Romeria a la Virgen de Los Angeles – August 2

The “Pilgrimage of the Virgin of the Angels” is Costa Rica’s most important religious celebration. Over one million romeros (“pilgrims”) travel on foot — sometimes for days — to the Basilica de los Angeles church in Cartago. There they pay homage to the Virgin de los Angeles , aka La Negrita (“The Little Black Girl”), a small black statue depicting the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus. The statue was miraculously discovered in the forest by a young indigenous girl in 1635.

Mother’s Day in Costa Rica – August 15

El Día de la Madre (“Mother’s Day”) is one of Costa Rica’s most important holidays. All workers get the day off, and mothers are treated to presents, serenades and special meals.

Entrada de los Santos – August 30

This parade in San Ramon features over two dozen statues of saints brought from various towns. The celebration includes live music and traditional Costa Rican food.

Afro-Caribbean Culture Day – August 31

This parade in Limon celebrates Costa Rica’s Afro-Caribbean heritage. There are concerts, cultural activities, delicious Caribbean food and more.

Costa Rican Winter September, October, November

September and October are the depths of the rainy season in Costa Rica. September brings heavy afternoon rains throughout much of the country. October is even worse – with rain that can last for days.

There is, however, an important exception to these soggy months. Over on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, September and October are the best months to visit. Although the Caribbean is normally the rainiest part of Costa Rica, September and October offer sunny days, calm seas, low season prices! This is also turtle nesting season, when thousands of sea turtles lay their eggs on the beaches of Tortguero National Park .

November marks the end of the rainy season in Costa Rica. The transition to the dry season has officially begun. Early November is often still rainy, but by late-November things start to clear up. The start of the dry season varies by region. In the North Pacific, the dry season often starts in early November. In the wetter South Pacific, the dry season might not start until early December.

Holidays & Festivals in September, October & November

Día de las culturas – september 12.

An alternative to Columbus Day, Día de las Culturas (“Day of the Cultures”) celebrates Costa Rica’s ethnic and cultural diversity.

El Desfile de Faroles – September 14

The “Parade of Lanterns” is one of the most beautiful holidays in Costa Rica. Thousands of schoolchildren parade through the streets with red, white and blue faroles (“lanterns”). The parade starts immediately after the country sings the national anthem at 6pm.

Costa Rica Independence Day

Costa Rica Independence Day – September 15

The most patriotic day of the year celebrates Costa Rica’s independence from Spanish colonial rule. Throughout the country, parades feature children in traditional clothes dancing and marching to drums.

Carnavales de Límon – mid-October

For years the biggest celebration on the Caribbean coast was Carnavales de Límon, a vibrant parade in the port town of Limon . Heavily influenced by Afro-Caribbean culture, the parade normally fell on the weekend closest to October 12. In 2015 Carnavales de Límon was cancelled due to lack of funding and organization. Sadly, the tradition appears to have ended.

Over the past few decades, Halloween has become increasing popular in Costa Rica, especially among young people. The excuse to dress up in costumes and party is just too tempting to resist, although Trick or Treating has not yet caught on. Some Costa Ricans bemoan yet another cultural invasion from the US, so they’ve tried to co-opt Halloween with a new holiday: Dia de la Mascarada .

Costa Rica Mascarada

Dia de la Mascarada – October 31

Costa Rica’s Día de la Mascarada (“Day of the Masquerade”) is held on October 31. First established in 1996, it was partly a celebration of traditional Costa Rican mascaradas — and partly a way to counter the growing influence of Halloween. The largest Día de la Mascarada celebration is held in Cartago.

Mascaradas feature a troupe of dancers wearing giant paper-mache heads depicting devils, animals, celebrities and La Giganta (“The Giant Woman”). As dancers twirl around and interact with children, a band called a cimarrona plays percussion and brass instruments. Cimarrona means “wild,” which accurately describes the loud, boisterous music.

When’s the best time to visit Costa Rica? It depends on why you’re traveling

When should you visit this beautiful country.

Amanda Teague

With its lush rainforests, stunning beaches, and diverse wildlife, Costa Rica has long been an ideal destination for travelers seeking adventure, relaxation, and immersion in nature. If you are considering visiting Costa Rica, you may wonder when you should take your trip. Determining the best time to visit Costa Rica largely depends on the purpose of your trip. Whether you are dreaming of lounging on the beach, catching the perfect wave, or exploring the biodiversity of its national parks , understanding the Costa Rica climate is essential for planning an unforgettable journey. This is how to choose the best time to visit Costa Rica, depending on the motivation for your trip.

Heading to the beach: December to April

Off-season: may and june, green season: july and august, traveling on a budget: september and october, catching some waves: august to november, the best time to visit costa rica depends on your preferences.

December to April marks Costa Rica’s dry season, making it the prime time for beachgoers to bask in the sun at one of the country’s incredible tropical beaches. With clear skies, minimal rainfall, and temperatures ranging from pleasantly warm to hot, visitors can indulge in endless days of relaxation and water-based activities at places like Manuel Antonio Beach, Tamarindo Beach, and the Nicoya Peninsula. The average temperature during this dry season typically ranges from around 70ºF to 85ºF, making it the perfect time for a beach vacation.

Additionally, the dry season in Costa Rica coincides with North America’s winter months, making it the perfect escape for those seeking respite from cold temperatures back home.

May through June offers a serene escape for travelers seeking a more tranquil experience in this beautiful country. As the transitional period between the dry and rainy seasons, this time of year often sees fewer tourists, providing an opportunity to explore some of the country’s top attractions in a more intimate setting. With the bulk of travelers having departed after the dry season, popular beaches are also more serene, allowing you to soak up the sun without worrying about crowds.

The Costa Rica weather may be slightly rainy during this time, however, the rain showers are typically brief and contribute to the rejuvenation of the landscape. This is a great time to admire how nature comes alive during the transition from the dry to wet season.

July and August include the peak of the rainy season in Costa Rica, a time when the lush landscapes are looking their best. Despite the occasional downpours, these months offer incredible opportunities for spotting wildlife in their natural habitats as the rainforest bursts with activity. With abundant water from the rain and lush vegetation, animals emerge from their hiding spots. During this time you can admire the incredible birdlife in Costa Rica, including toucans, scarlet macaws, and hummingbirds. Additionally, several of the region’s mammals like sloths, monkeys, and jaguars come out to play during these months.

July and August also coincide with sea turtle nesting season along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, providing travelers with the unique opportunity to witness these amazing creatures lay their eggs.

If you are traveling on a budget, then consider scheduling your trip for September or October. This is the tail end of the rainy season, so you can expect heavy downpours during this time. These weather conditions make it less appealing for travelers, providing fewer crowds and more affordable pricing on accommodations, tours, and activities.

However, don’t let the weather keep you away during this time. While rainfall is more frequent during this period, it typically comes in short bursts, leaving plenty of opportunities to explore between showers. Many tour operators offer special deals and promotions during this low season, making it easy for budget travelers to embark on fun excursions like zip-lining, waterfall rappelling, or wildlife watching at discounted rates.

August through November is the best time for surfers to visit Costa Rica, as there are larger waves produced by the rainy season’s storm surges. During this period, surfers from all over the world flock to the country’s many beaches to take advantage of the larger swells and prime surfing conditions.

During this time of year, you can also enjoy fewer crowds compared to the peak tourist season, allowing you to enjoy more waves with less competition. Some of the most popular surfing destinations in Costa Rica include Tamarindo, Playa Hermosa, and Pavones.

Costa Rica offers a wealth of experiences year-round, with each season presenting its unique advantages. Understanding Costa Rica’s weather patterns and aligning your trip with your motivations can maximize your enjoyment and create unforgettable memories in this beautiful country.

If you are planning your 2024 vacations, you may notice many popular travel destinations with a heftier price tag. As we move into the new year, there are a few vacation destinations that were once budget-friendly that will now require you to set aside a little more money. Several factors, such as inflation, infrastructure developments, and an influx of post-pandemic travel, will make many popular locations such as Aspen, Amsterdam, and Venice more expensive than ever in 2024.

Why are certain travel destinations becoming more expensive in 2024? There are several factors that contribute to certain destinations becoming more expensive in 2024. One significant factor is the recovery of the travel industry from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. As demand for travel increases, popular destinations may experience a surge in visitors, leading to higher demand for accommodation, transportation, and attractions. This increased demand, coupled with the need for tourism businesses to recover from financial losses incurred during the pandemic, may result in higher prices for various services.

With its epic mountain landscapes, the Canadian Rockies and western coastal region offer some of the most renowned outdoor opportunities in the world, whether you’re into snow sports like skiing or snowboarding, hitting the trails on a mountain bike, or simply enjoying the magnificent scenery. The Banff and Whistler areas in particular are popular thanks to their combination of natural splendor and charming mountain hamlet vibes. With dozens of hotels to choose from, which one is right for you? Here, we’ll check out the top Whistler and Banff hotels and ski resorts for a variety of trip categories: Budget, family-friendly, and so on.

You can rely on these recommendations, as I have vetted every one of them personally. Last summer I spent three solid months crisscrossing the region, and along the way, I stayed at nearly two dozen lodges. Not all of them are worth planning your ski or snowboard vacation or any outdoor adventure around, but here are several that will provide a superior experience.

National parks have become increasingly popular in recent years, attracting all kinds of nature enthusiasts, adventurers, and families who seek a slice of the great outdoors. However, that may become slightly more difficult as national parks across America begin to implement extra fees and reservation systems in 2024.

In this article, we will look at the changes currently being made in four iconic national parks and what that could mean for you and your crew.

The Best Time to Visit Costa Rica for Wildlife, Surfing, and Fewer Crowds

By Amber Port

An aerial view of the pacific ocean and coastline in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is easy to love with its awe-inspiring landscape and infectious atmosphere. With so much to offer, the best time to visit Costa Rica depends on what you're looking to do during your holiday. Whether you're off wildlife spotting or chasing swells, spending time in this picturesque Central American nation quickly teaches visitors what the “pura vida” lifestyle is all about. Below, see the best months to plan a Costa Rican getaway for surfing, budget travel, whale spotting, and more.

The best time to visit Costa Rica for good weather

If you’re looking to catch some sun, we recommend visiting Costa Rica between December and April. This is when temperatures are at their best, averaging 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with the hottest temperatures in March and April reaching around 97 degrees Fahrenheit. The chance of rainfall is low during these months, with an average of 61% humidity, making it more manageable than the rainier seasons.

The best time to visit Costa Rica for wildlife spotting

Costa Rica is full of opportunities to spot wildlife, no matter what season you decide to head to this beautiful country. There are numerous national parks and wildlife refuges, all boasting unique sights. If you’re looking to spot sea life, we recommend visiting between July and August–it’s the optimal time for whale spotting in Dominical and sea turtles in Tortuguero National Park . And if you’re a sloth lover, then you’re in luck. Costa Rica’s Manuel Antonio beach is an excellent place for sloth spotting.

Costa Rica Monteverde RedEyed Tree Frog

Costa Rica has numerous national parks and wildlife refuges perfect for nature lovers.

The best time to visit Costa Rica for lower prices

We’d recommend visiting in the early and later months of the off-season, like May and September. Costa Rica is a popular destination with North American travelers, so traveling before the high season and school holidays means you are more likely to save some money on accommodations and flights. The best weather spans from December to April, coinciding with the holiday season in North America, so this also tends to be a more expensive time to visit Costa Rica.

The best time to visit Costa Rica for surfing

It depends on your experience level. If this is your first foray into surfing, visiting in the dry season is the perfect time. March and April bring tame waves–perfect for learning how to surf . If you’re an experienced surfer, the green season (May to November) is for you, with September and October bringing the biggest swells.

A woman balancing on a log under a palm tree while watching sunset from a beach in Costa Rica.

For tame waves and sunny skies, beginner surfers should plan to visit Costa Rica in March and April.

The best time to visit Costa Rica for fewer crowds

If you want to avoid crowds , we’d recommend visiting at the beginning and end of the rainy season–May and October. The dry season between December and April will bring many tourists, as will the summer months as families head down during the school holidays.

costa rica tourist season

Costa Rica Guide

Travel information and maps, seasons in costa rica.

Note: contrary to predictions from the Costa Rican weather services that   El Niño would delay or mitigate the onset, the 2019 rainy season is right on time and more intense than normal.

Costa Rica’s two seasons are the dry “summer” ( verano) – January through April and r ainy “winter”  ( invierno) – May through December.

Pacific Side

The descriptions dry and rainy apply most accurately to the beach destinations of Guanacaste and Nicoya in the northwest corner of Costa Rica.  The rest of the Pacific side and much of the central mountains follow a similar pattern although with more precipitation in general.

Caribbean Side

The Caribbean (east) half of the country doesn’t show strong seasonal variation and tends to be rainier year round.  It breaks the rules in September and October when the rest of the country is experiencing the heaviest rain and the Caribbean beaches are warm, dry and sunny.

Summer/Winter, High/Peak/Low, and Green

You may have noticed that like the southern hemisphere the names of Costa Rica’s seasons are reversed relative to the U.S., Europe and Canada.  While the north is blanketed in snow December through April Costa Rica is enjoying “summer”.

This can be confusing when you pause to realize that Costa Rica is not in the southern hemisphere, it’s in the northern.  Unless you’re working on a degree in atmospheric science, it’s better to just accept this quirk and enjoy it rather than trying to explain it.

The tourism high and low seasons follow the precipitation patterns on the Pacific side where the beach resorts are located.  The high/dry season from January through March means higher prices and more crowds.  The term “peak season” is often used to describe the two weeks from just before Christmas until after the New Year when special higher pricing is in effect for the holidays.

The rainy/wet/winter months are known as the “Green Season” for tourism marketing purposes. It sounds way better than rainy.

The Dry/High Season—December through April

Life guards Playa Dominical

The main attraction of the high season is the weather. It is less likely that it will rain even in the rainforest, and in some areas, notably Guanacaste and Nicoya it’s downright arid. Wildlife can be easier to spot as it concentrates around shrinking water sources and the deciduous trees drop their leaves thinning the camouflage.

Obviously, another motivation for Northern American and European travelers is escaping the snow, cold weather and dark at home.  Warm tropical beaches have much more appeal when you’re knee deep in slush, and travelers from the north will also be rewarded with an extra few hours of sunshine every day. In addition to tourists, Arctic storms drive ocean swells southward and the surf is bigger and more reliable in the high season.

The main disadvantage of traveling to Costa Rica while it’s snowing up north is that it is the tourist high season. It is harder to get reservations, everything is relatively crowded and the prices are higher. From Christmas until the end of the first week in January, and Easter week are double jeopardy periods with lots of international travelers, and many Ticos traveling (the beaches are especially crowded).

Even the crowds have their up side though. Everything is open and running extended hours.  Bars and nightclubs are much more fun and there is an audience for live music and other performances.  Don’t forget they call it summer even though it’s Christmas time .

The Rainy/Low/Green Season—May through November

Clouds form over the mountains in rainy season

The low season, or winter in Costa Rica has been dubbed the “Green Season” by the tourism industry because that makes a better first impression than “rainy”.  Veteran Costa Rica travelers know that this time of year doesn’t need a special moniker to make it appealing; prices are halved, crowds are gone, and while the rain forested slopes of the mountains may be getting drenched, perfect sunny days at the beach aren’t at all unusual.

Map showing the average yearly chance of sunshine and the high and low temperatures for each month in each region of Costa Rica

The little blue and yellow map image links to an interactive weather map that shows the total annual precip and the monthly average rainfall for each region in Costa Rica.  The red and orange image links to a map that shows the average hours of sunshine and high and low temperatures by month and region.

Our first rainy season traveling in Costa Rica we expected the worst, but were pleasantly surprised. Over half the days it didn’t rain at all and the rest of the time it was a couple of hours in the afternoon bracketed by brilliant sunshine. In more than three months there were only two stretches of three days when it rained most of the time. During these drizzly days, it was clear and sunny on the opposite side of the country, so we could have avoided the rain had we thought it was a real annoyance. If you are thinking about a trip to Costa Rica during the green season, don’t let the weather stop you.

Many Costa Rica regulars prefer the green season, but there are some disadvantages as well.  There are some areas where it is really wet, particularly the Atlantic slopes, and the northeast and southwest.  The Osa Peninsula gets so much rain that travel becomes difficult and many of the lodges shut down in September and October. It also seems a little dark sometimes.  Those long summer nights are a polar phenomenon and this close to the equator the days are only a few minutes longer. The sun sets about 6:00 p.m. year round.

Rainy Season in Costa Rica – A Complete Guide

Rainy season in Costa Rica, or green season as it is often called, runs from later April until December.

Yes, that sounds like an extremely long period of rain.

Although this time is considered the rainy season, it does not mean that you will have non-stop rain.

In fact, there is a chance you won’t have any rain at all!

Rainy Season By Month

costa rica rainy season

We created a complete guide to Costa Rica weather by month if you would like a detailed assessment of what you can expect.

However, to keep it brief, from mid-December until late April ( peak season for travel to Costa Rica) it is very rare to experience rain at all.

From May until August you will likely have an afternoon rainstorm for an hour or two, but the rest of the day will be sunny and warm.

We like to start our day around by 7 am and enjoy the beautiful weather before the rain moves in.

September and October tend to be the rainiest months in the country. During this time of year, you could have some complete washout days.

Hurricanes don’t often make their way to Costa Rica, but in recent years there have been more instances of tropical storms and even the occasional hurricane touching down on Costa Rican soil.

Keep in mind that all this seasonal info applies to the Pacific coast and San Jose central valley area. The Caribbean coast part of the country is on a whole other seasonal weather pattern, which I’ll get into further in this post.

Should You Visit During Rainy Season?

palm trees on uvita beach

We say yes!

In fact, we think that early on during the rainy season is the best time to visit Costa Rica.

Everything is green, all the tourists go home after the high season, and prices go down.

Sure, you may be blessed with the daily afternoon thunderstorm, but it’s all just part of the experience!

The Best Places to Visit During Rainy Season

ocean near Uvita

There really is no “bad” places to visit during the rainy season, but there, of course, some spots that seem to get all the rain.

For example, although we absolutely love San Gerardo de Dota , it can be really cold and nonstop rainy if you visit later in the rainy season. Monteverde can be pretty similar.

You can expect anywhere on the Pacific coast or in San Jose to have the typical rain storm in the afternoon, but mostly good weather during the morning.

La Fortuna is kind of random. It seems that sometimes the weather is amazing there in July. In fact, the time we had the best views of Arenal Volcano was in July.

If you really want to avoid the rainy season when visiting during the Pacific rainy season months, just head to the Caribbean coast.

Caribbean Coast Rainy Season

boat tortuguero

The Caribbean coast has an opposite rainy season. The absolute best months to visit the Caribbean are August and September. During this time you can expect dry weather and hot sun shine.

Pro Tip: Visit Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast between July and November to see turtles laying their eggs. It will be one of the coolest experiences of your life!

Fun Rainy Season Activities

rainy costa rica

Try out some craft beers

Craft beer culture in Costa Rica is starting to pick up pace. One of our favorite rainy day activities is finding a local brewery to try some nice beers. Just be warned craft beer can be expensive here because almost all the ingredients have to be imported.

Tip: Check out our guide to craft beer in Costa Rica for all the best spots.

Enjoy each others company

We always pack a deck of cards to entertain us while traveling. On rainy days we love to cook lots of food, make good drinks, and play games.

If you want to have a similar experience, we suggest staying at a VRBO instead of a hotel. We love getting a place with a kitchen so we can cook nice meals and spread out a bit more.

Check out a Day Spa

Not exactly a budget activity, but there are some really nice day spas throughout Costa Rica. Most day spas are at the big hotels, but you don’t need to be a hotel guest to enjoy some serious relaxation.

If you are anything like me you will be excited to hear that many of the hot springs have chocolate massages. How cool is that?!?

Buy Some Souvenirs

I know you didn’t come all the way to Costa Rica to go shopping, but I don’t mean at a mall. Many towns in Costa Rica have streets with nice little shops.

Pro Tip: Check out our guide to souvenirs in Costa Rica for some great ideas of what to get your loved ones back home.

Check out a Museum

San Jose is home to several nice museums. The three top ones are the Jade Museum, the Children’s Museum , and the Museum of National History.

All three museums are in the downtown San Jose area so you can easily check out more than one of them in one day.

Relax at a Cafe

I love finding cute cafes or nice restaurants and just having long lazy lunches. It’s fun to people watch, talk, and just relax! Find a spot with a view and you can enjoy the comforts of being away from the rain while still seeing outside.

See Some Sea Turtles

Had to add this in here because if you visit Costa Rica during the rainy season you have a much higher chance of seeing turtles than all of those none rainy season visitors.

Our favorite places to see turtles are Tortuguero , and Ostional .

Put Your Rain Gear on and Deal

The rain isn’t much fun, but sometimes you end up visiting during a rainy week, and you still want to enjoy your vacation.

In that situation, we just bundle up in our rain gear and enjoy our time anyway. Don’t let the rain get you down!

What to Pack for Green Season

rainy season packing

We created a complete guide to packing during rainy season to further help you with the whole packing situation.

There are several things we suggest bringing that will help make your experience a bit less wet and humid.

Rainy Season Money Saving Tips

Visiting during the rainy season is almost always cheaper in general because prices go way down!

-Rent a car with Adobe. We have partnered with our favorite rental car company in Costa Rica, Adobe to bring you all a 10% to 20% discount. If you are renting a car during the rainy season the price is automatically a lot lower than during the dry season.

Plus, the rainy season is when Adobe sometimes increases that savings up to 20%. Either way, it’s a really great deal! You can find out more about our discount with Adobe here .

Adobe Rent-a-Car

  • 10% discount for Costa Rica Vibes readers
  • Free second driver
  • 0% deductible on Liability Protection Insurance
  • Excellent customer service
  • New fleet of well-maintained vehicles

-Check out hotels and VRBO . Hotel prices go way down during the rainy season, but I have found that sometimes VRBO prices go down even more than hotels do. Definitely, check both to find the best deals.

-Don’t hesitate to ask for discounts. Sometimes companies don’t advertise that their price is lower during the rainy season, but they are happy to lower their costs a bit. If you are doing an activity ask if they have a rainy season discount.

Just remember, Ticos don’t do well with confrontation so if they say that they don’t have a discounted rate it is best not to push the subject. It will make them very uncomfortable.

-Ask your hotel if they partner with any local companies. It is not unusual for hotels to partner with different activities in the area. Sometimes your hotel might be able to give you a great green season discounted rate on nearby activities.

-Pay attention to when schools are off in Costa Rica. During national holidays and school vacation time, things tend to fill up a bit more. If you want maximum savings and minimum crowds, pay attention to these dates before booking your vacation.

I hope this helped you all to plan your trip to Costa Rica during the rainy season. If you have any questions about the rainy season in Costa Rica, just leave them in the comment section below. We love to hear from you and are always happy to help you out!

We want to rent a care with Adobe but we arrive fairly late(midnight) in San Jose. Does Adobe allow for late pickup? Online it only gives the option of 11:30, which we would definitely miss.

Any advice for what we can do? I don’t want to take an Uber since our rented house is pretty far from the airport.

Hi Rahma, Hmmm that is a tough question. Let me ask my contact at Adobe if he has any suggestions. He probably won’t answer me until tomorrow (Monday) though, but I’ll get back to you as soon as he does. 🙂

hi Sarah how is the weather and road conditions in april thinking about heading there in about 2 weeks staying in Puntarenas do you need a 4×4 or is not necessary?

Hi Martha. Right now it is dry and hot, hot, hot! Rainy season could start soon but even if, you may have a few days with a short afternoon shower, nothing more. Also, you dont need a 4×4 for Puntarenas. Roads are well paved in that area. If you head up to Monteverde from there you will need a 4×4 or at least a 4×2, but otherwise youll be fine with something smaller. Let me know if you have more questions as you plan!

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica: The Weather Guide

The best time to visit most parts of Costa Rica in terms of weather is the dry season between December and April . There is another short dry window in July , which we call the “mini summer”. These months have mostly sunny days and lower chances of rainfall. This makes it the best time to enjoy the beaches, easier to hike and spot animals and birds in the wild .

However, the best weather on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is in September and October or February and March , as this part of the country experiences more rainfall than others in the other months.

The questions that you need to ask while planning the Costa Rica itinerary are:

How much rain is going to affect my Costa Rica vacation experience?

  • Mid-December to April
  • Mini-dry season in July on the Pacific Coast
  • February and March are the driest months
  • May, June, August to mid-December
  • September-October and February-March

How are the temperatures in various parts of Costa Rica?

The temperatures vary by regions – Central Valley, mountains or the coastal regions (Pacific and Caribbean). The dry seasons have hotter days than the wet season.

The Central Valley , including the capital San Jose, has year round moderate temperatures ranging between 15-28 degrees Celsius (59-82 degrees Fahrenheit).

The coastal regions are dry and hot with day temperatures above 30 C (86 F) and can vary across the north Guanacaste region, Nicoya, Central Pacific and South Pacific. The North and Central Pacific Coast of Guanacaste and Puntarenas provinces have the driest and hottest climates compared to the South Pacific region.

The Central Highlands and the Cordillera de Talamanca mountain regions can be cold with temperatures dropping below 10 C (50 F) depending on the altitude.

Tourist Seasons of Costa Rica – When are the visitors coming?

Most visitors prefer the sunny weather, the highlight of the dry season months, making the period the busiest among all. It is evident that the same months will be heavier on the travel budget.

Based on the data from Costa Rica Tourism Board , we created this infographic to help you get an overview of the tourist footfall in Costa Rica over different months of the year.

Monthly visitors in Costa Rica, infographics.

Peak Season – Busiest Tourist Time and Highest Prices

No surprise there! The holiday peak season ( Christmas and New Year ) is the period when Costa Rica gets the most visitors and the locals also travel in large numbers.

The Easter week in April , locally known as Semana Santa , is busy as the locals utilize the extra long weekend for some sun and sand.

High Tourist Season – Busy Tourist Time and High Prices

Otherwise the dry season (mid-December to April) months are the most visited apart from the mini-summer in July (Summer holiday in North America, Europe and mini summer in Costa Rica).

Low Season – Less Crowd and Low Prices

If you want some tranquility and low prices, May-June or mid-August to November are the best months. Although these months face rains, Costa Rica wears her lushest green in the rainy season. In most spots, you will probably get the entire place to yourself or with little crowd. Just remember to bring a good rain poncho and a waterproof backpack for hiking in rain!

Rainy season, between the months of May and November , is also a good time for advanced level scuba diving in Costa Rica. August onwards, until November, it is a good time for beginner level divers in Costa Rica.

The shoulder season of end-November to mid-December is our favorite as the landscapes are still afresh from the rains but the high season has not yet set foot in the country. Unless you have specific season-dependent activities in mind, try the shoulder season.

Costa Rica between Mid-December to April

The beaches are at their best during this season. So if you are looking for beautiful tropical sun and clear ocean water, this is the right time. The forest ecosystem looks drier during the middle of the season, however, the hiking trails are easier to walk on. Just need to be cautious with the heat and the humidity! The chances of watching wild animals and birds are higher as they do not need to hide from the rain.

  • Avoid the beginning of January if you want to keep away from ‘Christmas / New Year’ crowd and the peak season prices.
  • March and April are slightly better in terms of visitors and budget. However, the Easter week (locally called Semana Santa ) is usually very busy.
  • February and March are the driest months in most parts of Costa Rica including the Caribbean coast.

Costa Rica Weather and Climate

Costa Rica is situated between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean in Central America. You might know its climate to be tropical thanks to being so close to the Equator. However, there are subtle differences depending on the region you are visiting.

According to the Köppen-Geiger classification , you can expect the following climate per region:

  • Tropical rainforest is along the Caribbean Coast as well as Southern Costa Rica around the Osa Penisula and Golfo Dulce. It is the typical tropical climate, with rainy and dry seasons taking turns.
  • Tropical monsoon is along the Pacific Coast and the Northern border with Nicaragua. You can expect a bit longer rainy season or heavier rainfall compared to the tropical rainforest climate.
  • Tropical savanna is along the Northwestern areas, especially in Guanacaste. It usually receives less rainfall and has a longer dry season compared to the previous two.
  • Temperate or (subtropical highlands) is along the mountains like Cerro Chirripo in the middle of Costa Rica. It is usually closer to a four season climate but with high-altitude temperatures that can drop easily.

A map showing the different climates in Costa Rica

Average Temperature

As the climate is tropical throughout most of Costa Rica, you can see there is not much deviation during the year. The average temperatures vary between 75-79 Fahrenheit (24-26 Celsius), with maximum temperatures between 83-90 Fahrenheit (28-32 Celsius) and minimum temperatures between 65-69 Fahrenheit (18-20 Celsius).

The difference between the dry and rainy seasons is not temperature but humidity and precipitation. The below graph was drawn up using the historical data collected between 1991-2020 by the WorldBank database .

A graph of Costa Rica weather showing the average, minimum, and maximum temperates

Average Precipitation

Most people would like to know during which month the most rain will fall. It is natural, as you would think that when there is rainfall, you don’t get to do anything, so you want to avoid it.

According to the historical data collected between 1991-2020 by the WorldBank database in Costa Rica, the rainy season usually starts in May and lasts until November .

April is called the shoulder season , which is kind of a transitional period between the dry and the rainy season. There is gradually more and more rain, but not so much yet. While the previous barren landscapes start to be reborn.

There is also a special time called “ veranillo ” or mini-summer end of June, around 24 June, where there is a temporary decline in precipitation. So visitors can enjoy a green season with less rainfall.

“ Canícula ” is usually between mid-July and mid-August, when Costa Rica experiences something similar to an “Indian summer”.

A graph of Costa Rica rainfall showing the amount if rain in each month

Dry season – expensive, crowded

For tourists, who prefer hot summer days with less rainfall, the best time to go to Costa Rica is between November and April . Furthermore, several major holidays fall during this period like Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and even Easter, which means people have free time to travel.

Beach with blue ocean and rainforest

What to expect during this season?

  • Peak season, high prices – These are the hottest months in Costa Rica, especially between January and March. Most of the tourists book their stay for the dry season. Which means accommodations are offered at the highest prices.
  • Hot and dry – Just as its name suggests, this season is the hottest and driest. You should expect high temperatures, barren landscapes, smaller waterfalls and rivers, dried-up dirt roads, BUT there will be blue sky, and the sun is shining all day long (mostly). Guanacaste can be especially dry since its climate is tropical savanna.

Victoria, a full-time writer and photographer traveling around Central America said, “Costa Rica has a distinct wet and dry season, and I would highly recommend choosing the dry season to visit if you can. Your chances of having good weather will be far more likely during November to April, although prices can be higher. However, in my opinion, the investment is worth it, and you’ll be able to do a lot more than in rainy season. You just need to book a bit further in advance to make sure you can get the best prices. You’ll also meet a lot more other travelers along the way, especially if you’re a backpacker.

Activities you can do

  • Bird watching – Dry season is ideal for bird watching as you can hide within the shades of the rainforest. You may get to see several of the famous Costa Rican birds.
  • Surfing and swimming in the sea – No storms, no El Nino, or other meteorological phenomena to spoil your time on the beach. Swim, surf, dive, or just sunbathe.
  • Volcano tours and hiking – If you want to escape the hot weather, join a volcano tour or hike a mountain trail. As you go higher, temperatures are bound to drop a couple of degrees.
  • Nature walks – Discover one or more of Costa Rica’s National Parks and Reserves. You can also visit one of the best zip-lining parks, where you can find not only zip lines, but hanging bridges, cable cars, and treetop walkways.
  • Humpback whale migration (Uvita) – They reach the shores of Costa Rica first around September, but their migration season can last for several months. So you may be able to catch the end.
  • Fishing – Especially for freshwater fishing, the dry season is the best time as lakes and rivers shrink, making the fish congregate in more accessible areas. Read more in our guide to fishing in Costa Rica .

READ ON – 36 Eco-Friendly Things to Do in Costa Rica .

Rainy season – low prices, fewer tourists

The rainy season in Costa Rica starts in May and lasts until November . According to this Biological Weather Station , during this season, the rainfall gradually increases up to about 400 mm on average per month, being October statistically the wettest.

costa rica tourist season

  • High humidity – While the average temperature is not changing that much during the year, the humidity increases significantly.
  • Mosquitoes love this season – They are most active during dusk and dawn as well as near lakes and swampy areas like wetlands. According to Christa from Pura Vida Moms, the worst place to go if you want to avoid mosquitoes in Costa Rica is the Caribbean Coast (around Tortuguero National Park), Osa Peninsula (around Corcovado National Park), and the Southern Pacific area (around Pavones). So get your bug repellent and choose a lodge with a mosquito net .
  • Problematic road conditions – Due to heavy rainfall and the fact that paved roads may not have good drainage, water can remain on the road rendering the potholes or even the line of the road not visible. If the road is unpaved, the mud can turn so thick that even 4x4s can get stuck.
  • Lower prices, smaller crowds – Tourists in general prefer dry season, therefore you can find more affordable prices and fewer people if you choose this season.

Lori, a slow travelers behind Travlinmad recommends that if you are planning road-tripping in Costa Rica, the dry season offers much greater accessibility to drive in more remote parts of the country. However, the back roads of Costa Rica can easily become impassible when the summer rains create mud so thick it can even bog down a 4×4. However, the green season in Costa Rica can be a much better option if you are staying for a longer holiday and want to save your hard-earned dollars. Traveling in the summer offers much lower prices and smaller crowds, two of the biggest perks for slow travelers.

  • Waterfall rappelling – More rains mean the waterfalls are the largest during this season. You can get close to many of them and even swim in some. You will get wet no matter what when visiting one of the Costa Rican waterfalls .
  • Whitewater rafting – Same goes here. You may get yourself wet, even if you don’t want to.
  • Zip-lining and canopy tours – You can discover the lush green rainforest easily by riding ziplines or participating in canopy tours.
  • Turtle watching – The best time to catch them is between August and November.
  • Humpback whale migration (Uvita) – They reach the shores of Costa Rica first around September, but their migration season can last for several months.
  • Fishing – Marlin and sailfish action is best in May through October in the Northern regions of the Pacific Coast. Read more in our guide to fishing in Costa Rica .
  • Scuba diving (Bat Islands aka Islas Murciélagos) – Large population of bull sharks and manta rays can only be sighted during the rainy season for experienced divers* .
  • Coffee tours – The coffee harvest season starts in September.

Veranillo – mini summer at the end of June

There is a special time of the year in Costa Rica when they should be in the middle of the rainy season, but still, they experience I decline in rainfall. Veranillo de San Juan (around 24 June) is a meteorological phenomenon where you get to experience the lush and green scenery without the heavy rainfalls and whirlwinds.

It sounds amazing, right? Can it be that veranillo is the best month to go to Costa Rica? Hold your horses before booking. Veranillo can be quite limited to certain areas as well as in time. For example, in 2013 it was only in Guanacaste , and in 2018 it only lasted for 5 days in the Central Valley and along the Pacific Coast. Be sure to get information on the yearly forecast before deciding, as it can happen that you travel to a region where veranillo will not even appear.

Beach with rocky side and green vegetation

Veranillo could be the best time to visit Costa Rica, but it is not easy to catch. This phenomenon usually lasts for only 1-7 days. It is a dry period right in the middle of the rainy season. During veranillo you can enjoy sunny and warm weather with lush green surroundings. Prices are lower than during the high season, and the country isn’t usually too overrun with tourists.

Sara from Costa Rica Vibes recommends the Pacific Coast for veranillo. Specifically, the Guanacaste Province in the northwest corner of the country will have excellent weather. Here you can experience surfing in Tamarindo for all skill levels, scuba diving along marine-filled reefs in Playas del Coco, hiking at an active volcano in Rincon de La Vieja National Park, and absolute relaxation at a resort on the Papagayo Peninsula.

Canícula – heatwave during the rainy season

The “canícula” refers to a period of hot and dry weather amidst the rainy season, which typically occurs between July 15 and August 15. The time frame is slightly different depending on the region. The IMN, Costa Rica’s National Meteorological Institute, publishes predictions each year.

Arenal Volcano in the background rainforest in the front

During this time, rainfall decreases in quantity and intensity, or may even cease completely, for a duration ranging from 5 to 15 days. Temperatures rise, and winds become stronger. The heatwave is most prominently experienced in the North Pacific, Central Valley, Los Santos area, and the General Valley. Canícula typically a series of consecutive dry days mixed with some rainy days.

Stephanie from The Unknown Enthusiast says a trip to Costa Rica in July is a great time to experience what the country has to offer. By the end of June, the vegetation has recovered from the lack of rain during the dry season and is absolutely lush and green, but hasn’t gotten too deep into the rainy season yet. You can count on sunrise being clear and bright, with late afternoon rain showers being fairly regular, though not occurring every day. This early in the rainy season, it hasn’t gotten too muddy yet, and the bugs are not nearly as thick as they get later in the season.

Shoulder season – the best time to visit Costa Rica?

Can it be that the shoulder season is really the best time to travel to Costa Rica? It may, as well. Rainfall is expected to start around April and May, but it will only increase gradually in time. It means there may only be 1-2 hours of rain, and then the sky is all clear to do any activities you want. Considering that October is the wettest month, the end of spring is quite far from it.

Rainforest from the ground with thick vegetation

  • Outside peak season – It may fall outside peak season in the calendar of several eco-lodges . Be sure to check that. There are also fewer tourists, so even the popular locations will not feel too crowded. You get to enjoy the activities as a true eco-tourist .
  • Mild showers – The climate is just going into the rainy season. You can expect mild rainfall.
  • Green nature – Especially in May and especially in areas that can get really dry (like Guanacaste), you get to experience how flora and fauna wake up due to the wetter weather.

Haley from Gathering Waves reflects on her personal travel experience when she recommends the shoulder season as the best time to visit Costa Rica. She spent the first half of a year living in Nosara, Costa Rica and experienced the height of both the dry and the rainy seasons. She says that April and May were by far the best! During the shoulder season, there were a fraction of the tourists. The rains in the shoulder season are also not too bad. Typically, it will be warm and sunny in the mornings and early afternoons, and storm in the evenings and at night. The rain in the evenings was well worth the lack of tourists. And, with a little more rain, Costa Rica becomes much less dry and far more green and lush, making it all the more beautiful.

Costa Rica in May: Guide to Weather, Where to Go, What to Do

C osta Rica in May is the start of the rainy season throughout most of the country. It is a great time to visit, but there are a few things you should know as you plan your trip.

Thomas and I created this post to detail the pros and cons of May in Costa Rica. We have lived in Costa Rica since 2016, so we are somewhat experts on the weather you can expect each month of the year. We also included tips on what to pack, the best areas to visit, and the pros and cons of this time of year.

So, let’s get to all the tips to make sure you have an amazing experience while visiting Costa Rica during the month of May.

Costa Rica in May at a Glance

  • This is a transition month between the end of dry season and the start of rainy season. Weather will be hot and sunny with occasional afternoon rain showers on the Pacific Coast.
  • Typically tourism starts to go down a bit at this time of year. That means prices also get a bit lower.
  • Focus on sun-blocking clothing, high SPF sunscreen, bug spray, rain protection, and lots of water for hydration. This time of year is humid!

Should You Travel to Costa Rica in May?

We say definitely! It’s actually one of the best months of the year to visit Costa Rica (in our opinion).

Pros of Visiting Costa Rica in May

  • The weather should be good. We go into the weather details further in this post, but in general, you can expect perfectly sunny days, afternoon rain storms, and warm evenings.
  • Everything will be open at this time. Sometimes later in the year tour companies and hotels close because there are just not enough tourists for there to be a reason to stay open.
  • Everything starts turning green again after the dry season, and it is so beautiful!
  • There are still a lot of tourists, but it is not as busy as peak high season ( January – April).
  • You can expect what is referred to as “mid-season prices”. That means rates aren’t as high as in peak season, but not as low as later in the year when the chance of rain is higher.
  • Hotels, activities etc, aren’t as full.
  • Wildlife can be more active because the temperatures cool down a bit. It’s a great time to visit national parks !

Cons of Visiting Costa Rica in May

  • This is the beginning of the green season and you may have to contend with afternoon rain.
  • Rates go down a bit, but not as much as later in the year
  • The mosquitoes tend to be worse in the rainy season versus dry season

Costa Rica Weather in May

May is the start of the rainy season in many parts of Costa Rica, which means you can expect some wet weather during your visit.

The weather can vary significantly depending on where you are in the country.

The sun rises daily around 5:15 am and sets around 5:50 pm.

One thing to keep in mind is that the weather forecast online is never correct during the rainy season. They typically predict rain showers all day long. This is luckily all lies.

Pacific Coast

On the Pacific Coast, we suggest getting up as early as possible. Usually, you won’t really be able to sleep in anyway because the however monkeys and other loud wildlife will make sure you are up early.

In our opinion, the early morning hours are the very best time of the day. It’s beautiful!

You can expect hot days (mid 80’s Fahrenheit) with plenty of sunshine until the early afternoon.

Around 2pm the afternoon rain storms usually roll in. These storms typically last for an hour or two. This is a great time to take a little siesta.

After that, the weather tends to cool off a bit. But, “cools off” is a relative term. Really, it typically gets down to the mid to high seventies Fahrenheit.

The evenings tend to be clear with nice sunset views.

After sunset, you will need bug spray.

On the northern Pacific Coast in the Guanacaste Province , you can expect even less rain. Typically this area tends to stay dry a bit longer.

San Jose & Central Valley

San Jose and the Central Valley area is always bit cooler than the Pacific Coast.

The average daytime temperatures range from around 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C), while nighttime temperatures usually drop to around 60°F to 65°F (16°C to 18°C).

Just note that temperatures can vary depending on the specific location within the Central Valley. Higher elevation areas tend to be cooler.

Northern Mountains

The Northern Mountains region consists of La Fortuna and Monteverde.

The days should be clear enough that you will be able to enjoy good views in mountain towns. For example, Arenal Volcano should be mostly clear for viewing.

In Monteverde , you may have more rain. Usually, it is not super heavy, but the rain can occur more throughout the day and tends not to be limited to only the afternoons.

Caribbean Coast

The Caribbean Coast has the opposite rainy and dry season the Pacific Coast. May in the Caribbean can mean heavier rains. In our experience, usually, it rains more in the evening than during the day, but you never know.

Average highs range from 80°F to 85°F (27°C to 29°C) and lows from 70°F to 75°F (21°C to 24°C).

What to Pack for Costa Rica in May

In May, layers are also a good idea because it can get cool in the evenings after the daily rain.

  • Lightweight and breathable clothing (shorts, T-shirts, tank tops). We suggest opting for moisture-wicking clothing that also blocks UV rays.
  • Long-sleeved shirts and lightweight pants for cooler evenings and sun protection
  • Swimsuits for beach and water activities
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals for exploring
  • Rain jacket for occasional showers during the transition to the rainy season
  • Sunglasses for sun protection

Weather-Specific Items:

  • Sunscreen (high SPF) for sun protection in the tropical climate
  • Insect repellent to ward off mosquitoes, especially during evenings
  • Daypack for carrying essentials during day trips and excursions. I suggest a dry bag.
  • Plastic bags or waterproof pouches for protecting electronics and important documents from rain

Outdoor and Adventure Gear:

  • Sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes for exploring natural trails. We like Keens .
  • Pocket binoculars for wildlife viewing, especially in national parks
  • Refillable water bottle to stay hydrated during outdoor activities. I suggest LifeStraw bottles .
  • A glasses strap to keep your sunglasses secure during adventures like zip lining and boat trips
  • Quick-dry microfiber travel towel for convenience on the go

Electronics and Accessories:

  • Camera or smartphone for capturing the stunning landscapes and wildlife
  • Portable charger to keep devices powered during outdoor excursions

Health and Safety:

  • Travel first aid kit with basic medications, bandages, and any necessary prescriptions
  • Motion sickness tablets if you’re sensitive to travel on winding roads or if you plan to take boat trips
  • Hydration tablets or electrolyte supplements for staying hydrated in the warm weather
  • Hat with a wide brim for added sun protection, especially during outdoor activities

Miscellaneous Items:

  • Copies of important documents (passport, travel insurance, itinerary)
  • Zip lock bags to separate wet items in your luggage

Check out our complete packing list for women and packing list for men for more ideas of what to bring.

The Best Places to Visit and Places to Avoid

There is nowhere I would suggest completely avoiding. You will likely have more rain on the Caribbean Coast, but it is a beautiful area to visit.

As always, you can expect more tourists in the bigger towns (La Fortuna, Monteverde, Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, Jaco, Manuel Antonio) but it shouldn’t be too crazy.

Things to Do at this Time of Year

This is a great time of year for pretty much all activities. When booking your Costa Rica tours, keep in mind that there may be afternoon storms. We like to try and schedule as much as we can in the morning to avoid the possibility of being rained out.

Some of our favorite activities are:

  • Visit a Waterfall : The water levels will be a bit higher than during the dry season, so you can enjoy a better experience.
  • Go Hiking in a National Park : We love it when everything turns lush and green again. Plus, with fewer crowds, the national parks are super enjoyable. This is a great time to go to Corcovado National Park or Manuel Antonio National Park .
  • Go Zip Lining : Again, with everything starting to turn green and vibrant in May it is a great time to get overhead views of the jungle canopy with a zip-lining adventure. We suggest this activity in Monteverde or La Fortuna .
  • Take a Catamaran Sunset Tour : This is a fun activity to do after the brief afternoon rain shower. A catamaran tour typically includes a fun time out on a nice boat, Usually, these tours are a bit cheaper than in the high season.
  • Visit the Beautiful Beaches : It is always a good time to visit the amazing beaches. All beaches in Costa Rica need to have free public access by law. That means there is thousands of miles of coastline for you to explore.

Booking Transportation

Typically, we think renting a car is the best way to easily get around.

In May, demand isn’t as high, but it is still best to book somewhat early because things can still book out.

Adobe Rent-a-Car

  • 10% discount for Costa Rica Vibes readers
  • Free second driver
  • 0% deductible on Liability Protection Insurance
  • Excellent customer service
  • New fleet of well-maintained vehicles

Some other transportation options you might consider are:

  • Book a shared shuttle on BookAway
  • Book a private shuttle with Adobe Transfers

Booking Hotels

We like to use Booking.com and reserve places with free cancellations up to a certain date. This will give you the most flexibility if your plans change or if you find a better option. Just make sure to remember to cancel in time!

We also really like VRBO for booking villas or houses. Again, we suggest filtering by places that allow free cancellation if you are concerned about your plans possibly changing.

When booking a place make sure it has AC. sometimes you might be fine with just an electric fan, but we have definitely learned to give preference to places with AC because the evenings can stay semi-warm.

Holidays and Festivals

There is one Costa Rican national holiday in May.

Labor Day : May 1st is celebrated as Labor Day in Costa Rica, and it is a public holiday. Many businesses and shops are closed, and there are often parades and demonstrations in the major cities.

Another fun festival is, Día de San Isidro Labrador on On May 15th. This event is observed in various towns near San Jose such as San Isidro de Heredia, Perez Zeledon, and Atenas.

This festivity pays homage to the patron saint of farming. It features vibrant parades, traditional cuisine, and a ceremonial blessing of the crops.

Our Travel Tips for Visiting Costa Rica in May

  • Check out flying into both the San Jose and Liberia Airport for your trip to Costa Rica in May. More and more flights are flying into Liberia Airport and sometimes you might find great deals. We like San Jose Airport because it is very centrally located, but Liberia is a lot less hectic and great if you are planning to visit the Guanacaste Province or Northern Mountain region.
  • If you need more info, we have a complete guide to Costa Rica weather with more details of what to expect in every month.
  • Don’t forget travel insurance. Since we suggest booking everything as early as possible. It is always good to have travel insurance if your travel plans change.

There really isn’t a bad  time to visit Costa Rica . While many people assume the rainy season would be difficult and not ideal, we tend to disagree. The weather patterns in the country are as varied as the landscapes, and it makes visiting different regions of the country a completely new experience.

Our hot tip for travelling to Costa Rica is to not be afraid of the rainy season. If you embrace it, you’ll be able to see parts of the country at its very best.

Seasons in Costa Rica

The country boasts lush jungles, highland valleys, mountains, and stretches of coastline on both the Pacific and Caribbean sides. Like most tropical countries, there are two main seasons – the dry season and the rainy season.

The Costa Rica dry season lasts from December to April. The lack of rain and high temperatures make it a more popular time to visit—this is generally known to be the high season in Costa Rica. However, prices will also be higher, and the vegetation will be much less beautiful than it is in the green season.

Rainy Season

Costa Rica’s rainy season is from May to mid-November. Rainfall is heavier, bringing lush and beautiful foliage across the country. This is why the rainy season is often referred to as the green season. There are fewer crowds, and prices are lower during this time, as it’s considered low season.

The rainiest time to visit Costa Rica is between September and October. But despite the rain, we don’t think it’s the worst time to visit Central America and this is why.

Rainy Season in Costa Rica

Depending on the part of the country you’re visiting, the weather can vary drastically. Costa Rica has over 20 micro-climates, which means the temperatures and the abundance of rain vary throughout the country.

Temperatures

The Costa Rica rainy season brings a variety of temperatures across different regions. The average temperatures in Costa Rica range between 20 – 30 °C year-round, making it relatively stable compared to other countries in Central America.

However, the  central regions of Costa Rica  tend to be cooler than the coastal areas, and humidity increases the further south you go. The weather in San José and the central valley is milder, staying in the mid-’20s C (70s F) throughout the entire year. Although in the  mountain regions  around San Jose, such as La Fortuna, Monteverde, Bajos del Toro, San Vito and San Gerardo de Dota, it is colder, with daytime temperatures around in the low 20s C (70s C).

On the  Pacific Coast , it’s much warmer as the average temperatures stay in the high 20s C (80s F). This area is the driest region of Costa Rica, meaning humidity isn’t too extreme, but it still reaches around 80-85% during the rainier months from May to October.

The  Caribbean Coast  of Costa Rica has a very different weather pattern to the rest of the country. While it still sees high temperatures consistently in the high 20s C (mid-80s F), humidity tends to be much higher all year as the region sees more regular rainfall.

La Fortuna Volcano

The wet season in Costa Rica tends to follow a similar pattern across the country, with the exception of the Caribbean Coast, which has slightly different rainfall patterns. Typically, rain begins to fall heavily from May onwards in Costa Rica, with the peak rainy season hitting around September to mid-November.

However,  Guanacaste Province  and the northwest Pacific Coast are the driest parts of the country. It can stay relatively dry in the early rainy season, with heavy downpours not starting until July and running until October. The first rains also tend to build up in the later afternoon, giving you fine mornings to get out and about.

As you move further south along the  Pacific Coast , conditions get wetter and lusher all the way down to the dense rainforest on the Osa Peninsula. These areas of the southern Pacific coast tend to start seeing rain earlier than the north coast, beginning around April.

The  Caribbean Coast  is more of an exception. It follows its own weather pattern that differs from the rest of the country. It sees almost double the rainfall than the Northern Pacific Coast at around 125 inches a year, spread out more evenly with rain year-round. The rainiest months on the Caribbean side tend to be July and November, with less rain in the mid-rainy season of September and October, giving it a mini-dry season instead.

Rainfall also brings layers of fog that settle around the  mountains and central valleys  during the rainy season, making it not an ideal time for spectacular views from the top of volcanoes. But it does bring some relief from the hot temperatures, with far less humidity than the coast.

Guide to Ecotourism in Costa Rica, costa rica rainy season

The wind direction in Costa Rica is what influences the majority of weather patterns across the country. During the dry season in Costa Rica, strong winds are common from December onwards as the ocean trade winds push the rain clouds and moisture away.

On the flip side, the northwest trade winds diminish during the rainy season, and the moist air arrives from the Pacific. The mountainous interior of Costa Rica creates a rain shadow as it blocks the effects of the winds coming off the coast; hence, the rainiest months differ between the two coastlines.

This means that the rainy season sees less wind than Costa Rica’s dry season. However, during dry spells on the coast in the middle of the rainy season, often termed “little summer,” such as in July in the Northwest Pacific, monsoon winds can pick up and bring in a tropical storm or two.

Rainy day in La Fortuna, costa rica rainy season

The rainy season is considered an off-season or low season for tourism across most of Costa Rica. Far fewer people travel to Costa Rica during the rainy season, with heavy downpours affecting some aspects of the country.

Once the peak rainy season hits at the end of August for most of the country, some regions become difficult to reach. Dirt roads can be flooded, and landslides are common, making it ideal to  explore with a 4×4  rather than regular car rentals. You’ll have to check road conditions before heading out, especially in the national parks along the South Pacific coast and mountainous regions inland. Some of the rainforests in the south will be impenetrable, and you may have to change your travel plans.

However, for the most part, things remain open around Costa Rica even in the rainy season. This is because the wet season is actually the high season for some activities, such as surfing and wildlife spotting.

Why Visit Costa Rica in the Rainy Season

You don’t have to put off your trip to Costa Rica in the wet season because there are so many good reasons why the rainy season is the best time to go to Latin America.

Fewer Tourists and Cheaper Prices

Being the low tourist season means you’ll enjoy far fewer crowds at the popular towns and attractions, as well as cheaper accommodation and food prices. This is ideal if you’re a budget traveller or you prefer to be a bit more flexible with your travels and book things last minute.

However, more Costa Ricans travel during this time, but the beaches remain pretty quiet and tourist towns offer more deals on excursions and tours.

Great Surf Conditions

One of the best reasons for visiting during Costa Rica’s rainy season is the great surf conditions. While Costa Rica is considered a year-round surf destination, the green season brings waves catering to more intermediate to advanced surfers.

The South Pacific swell runs from June to September, bringing the biggest conditions for advanced surfers along the South Pacific Ocean coastline. The North Pacific swell is slightly different and peaks more in the dry season, but a northwest swell also tends to hit Guanacaste Province in the wet season.

The surfing conditions on the Caribbean coast aren’t as consistent, with its more varied weather patterns. From the late rainy season onwards, you’ll get bigger swells starting in October, which then run into the dry season until mid-April.

If you’re hoping to plan your trip around  the best surfing spots in Costa Rica , then the rainy season offers an amazing time for surfing.

Pleasant Weather (Especially in the North Pacific Coast)

While the common assumption is that the Costa Rica rainy season is a miserable time to visit, this is not always true. The weather is generally quite pleasant and not as impactful as you might think.

During the beginning and end of the rainy season (May until early July and late November until December), the weather isn’t all that bad. In fact, you’ll more than likely have sunny mornings with clear blue skies until the afternoon showers build up, especially on the Pacific Coast.

If you visit the Guanacaste coast, the rainy season is shorter, and the weather forecast is drier compared to other regions, making it generally sunny for most of the year. At the same time, the change in wind conditions means the temperatures drop a little, making it good weather to be outdoors.

You can also plan your trip around when the seasons flip-flop between coasts. During September and October, when the Pacific gets the most rain, you can simply head to the Caribbean Coast, which enjoys a mini summer with little rain. It all comes down to smart planning!

Playa Lagartillo, Guanacaste

Perfect for Yoga and Wellness Retreats

The best part about joining a yoga or wellness retreat in Costa Rica’s rainy season is that it doesn’t matter if you have a tropical downpour or more rain. With more flexibility in both indoor and outdoor activities, it’s a nice time to indulge in a retreat at one of the wellness centers around Costa Rica.

With some of  Costa Rica’s best yoga retreats  on the Caribbean Coast and around Guanacaste Province, you can escape the rain by picking a location that suits you and the weather. It also means you’ll likely have a more intimate experience with fewer people travelling at this time.

Nature is at its Best

There is a good reason why the rainy season is referred to as the green season. With all the rain, the landscapes around the country come to life, flowers bloom, waterfalls are full, and the rainforest is lush.

If you plan on visiting during Costa Rica’s rainy season, then definitely plan to go  chasing the best waterfalls . In the dry season, some of the waterfalls reduce to simple trickles of water, and it’s only after heavy rain that they are pumping through the rainforest again and are impressive to see.

Ideal for Wildlife Spotting

Costa Rica’s rainy season is a dream for wildlife enthusiasts. Some of the best wildlife encounters can be experienced during the rainy season.

Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast sees the year’s largest arribadas, or mass sea turtle nesting and hatching, from March until November. If this is high on your bucket list, we recommend heading to  Playa Ostional and Ostional Wildlife Refuge  to catch thousands of turtles coming ashore.

If whale watching is what you’re looking for, the wet season is also a wonderful time to go. While Costa Rica has whale watching almost all year round, arguably the best time to see humpback whales on the Pacific Coast is during the second half of the wet season, from late July until November. Try heading to the central pacific national parks, including Manuel Antonio, Drake Bay or  Marina Ballena National Park around Uvita  for some incredible boat tours getting you up close.

FAQs: Costa Rica Rainy Season

What is the rainiest month in costa rica.

Across most of the country, September and October are the wettest months, especially on the Pacific Coast. However, the Caribbean is generally pretty dry during these months and has more rain in July and November.

What months are best to visit Costa Rica?

If you want to get the best of both the dry and rainy seasons, then we highly recommend visiting during the transition months between the two seasons. Try planning your trip for November to early December or June to mid-July for the best weather.

Is it worth visiting Costa Rica in the rainy season?

We love the Costa Rica rainy season! If you prefer fewer crowds and cheaper prices, then visiting Costa Rica in the rainy season is definitely worth it. The weather is rarely as bad as you think, and there are plenty of wonderful things to do during the rainy season, including world-class surfing, whale watching, waterfall chasing, and scuba diving.

Costa Rica’s Holy Week processions are a remarkable display of faith, tradition, and artistry that captivate onlookers regardless of their religious beliefs. These solemn events, particularly the Good Friday procession, are an integral part of the country’s cultural heritage.

In 2016, Andrés Madrigal captured the essence of the Good Friday procession in downtown San José through his lens. The video showcases the elaborate pageantry, intricate costumes, and the fervent devotion of the participants. The sights and sounds of the procession are meticulously documented, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the experience virtually.

It provides a glimpse into the past, enabling those who have not had the opportunity to attend in recent years to relive the experience or witness it for the first time. The solemn atmosphere, the intricate details of the floats, and the collective devotion of the community are all captured in this timeless piece of footage.
