Ouai air dry foam, how to use dry shampoo.

You may think dry shampoo is a relatively new addition to the haircare world, as brands like Batiste have taken the market by storm with their aerosols over the past few decades. But dry shampoo has been solving our hair woes for far, far longer. “Dry shampoo has been around since the early 1900’s, but came into commercial use around 1940,” explains clinical trichologist Victoria Scott , from the Institute of Trichologists. The formula was originally used “for wigs, to maintain styles that couldn’t be washed and styled daily, or for hair that was high maintenance,” she adds.

Dry shampoo dos and don'ts

Although dry shampoo feels like an easy fix-all, it's not intended for everyday use and shouldn’t replace shampooing your hair with water. Consistent use of dry shampoo can damage hair, as Scott explains. “Dry shampoos don’t only reduce the hydrophobic qualities of oils and sebum, they also dehydrate the follicle, and can cause breakage from a loss of tensile strength in the hair,” she says. So, how should you use it?

  • Use for a quick refresh in between washes.
  • Use to absorb oil — whether you produce too much, or your style is affected by an excess of oil.
  • Massage it into the roots and scalp.
  • Use as a replacement for regular washing. Overuse can cause hair and scalp damage, irritation, and even hair loss from blocked follicles.
  • Spray too close. Always spray towards the hair and scalp from 12 inches (30cm) away, to ensure even application and avoid white residue.

Is dry shampoo bad for me?

When used occasionally in between hair washing days, dry shampoo isn't harmful. However, it shouldn't be used as a replacement for your regular shampoo and conditioner, as it can dehydrate and damage the follicles with overuse, Scott warns.

You may have read the news in November 2022 about potentially elevated levels of benzene in some types of dry shampoo after a report was published in the US by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Benzene is a chemical that's been found to cause blood cancers such as leukaemia when people are exposed to it in large quantities over a long period.

However, although some of the brands highlighted in the report are available here in the UK, their formulas have been altered to comply with UK laws, which have banned the use of benzene in cosmetics . It's also important to note that only trace amounts of benzene were found in the products, which wouldn't be enough to cause adverse health effects.

Can you use it on wet hair?

Despite some hacks on social media recommending the use of dry shampoo on wet hair, all that’s going to do is dehydrate the hair and reduce any moisture you have put in during washing.

“This can have a long-term impact on the quality and condition of your hair and scalp,” Scott explains. “Dry shampoo should only be used as the name implies, on dry hair, due to its absorbency qualities.”

How we test

The Good Housekeeping Institute put 23 different dry shampoos to the test with the help of a panel of 493 people over a two-week period. Our panel was asked to assess the effectiveness of each product, giving feedback on whether it left their hair feeling less greasy and fresher overall. They were also asked to consider the product's design and how their hair looked and felt after use. In the lab, we applied artificial sebum to hair switches and measured the amount of sebum using a Sebumeter. We then applied each dry shampoo to the switches and measured again, to see how effective they were at reducing greasiness.

Score: 89/100

Our winning dry shampoo is a bit of a cult buy, not only because of the brand's cool aesthetic and its fresh and slightly floral smell, but also its impressive performance. Testers found it very effective at removing grease and sebum, while leaving hair with a touch of texture and a long-lasting scent.

Only a small amount of product is needed, it was easy to distribute through the hair and it left our testers’ locks feeling “shiny and fresh” all day. For most of our panel, it didn't leave a chalky finish or “feel claggy on the scalp”, but those with darker hair did notice a white cast, and some found the product left a slight residue.

Key specifications

Score: 85/10

This affordable dry shampoo was praised by our panel as it didn’t leave a white cast after use, while it scored highly in the lab for reducing hair’s greasy appearance.

Most testers liked its fresh citrus scent, although some found that the de-greasing effects weren't long lasting enough throughout the day, but that's perhaps understandable given the price.

Score: 83/100

Klorane's dry shampoo is enriched with extract of oat milk, which moisturises hair, while still helping it to look less greasy and oily.

Testers reported seeing an overall improvement in the appearance of their hair, saying they noticed extra body and a decrease in the amount of sebum. Some said it left a slight white residue, but after brushing thoroughly, this quickly dissipated.

Score: 82/100

In between washes, finer hair can often become lank and greasy, but this dry shampoo is the perfect pick if you want to give it some extra bounce. Testers said it extended the amount of time they could go in-between washes with just a few sprays, and it left their hair feeling clean, fresh and weightless.

Its formula includes keratin, which also helps to nourish the hair. Everyone loved its “fresh and pleasant” gardenia scent, although some felt the spray left their hair looking slightly dull and a bit tacky.

This dry shampoo lived up to its “invisible” claims, as testers didn't notice any residue left in their hair. Another big plus is that it contains UV filters to help protect hair from the sun.

It was easy to use and distribute, with a lightweight texture, leaving hair looking and feeling fresher. Testers did note that it didn't add much volume to hair though.

Formulated with micro-fine rice starch, this dry shampoo helps to condition hair, as well as removing oil at the roots. It won't dry your locks out, making it a great option for those who already struggle with dry hair.

With a light citrus scent, testers found it easy to apply and rub in, it didn’t leave any white marks, and a little went a long way. Some testers found the finish a little stiff, but not unpleasantly sticky.

Score: 81/100

For those with dark hair, white casts can be the bane of our lives when it comes to dry shampoos. But Olaplex has answered our woes with this clear spray. Our testers “loved that it's completely invisible”, and it doesn't leave a cast. It’s also very lightweight and “doesn't feel heavy or powdery in hair.”

Not only did it absorb grease, but testers also found it added long-lasting volume, with some even commenting on how much thicker it made their hair look. Others said they experienced added bounce, and the fragrance was long-lasting.

This coconut-scented dry shampoo scored highly with testers not only for its holiday-like smell, but also its design and performance. It has a weightless feel once applied, and it boosted the volume of our testers’ hair too.

However, a few people said it left their hair feeling dry and they had to reapply throughout the day, because their locks started to look a little flat.

Score: 79/100

As one of the original dry shampoo brands most people will be familiar with, Batiste is our best budget friendly option. It's easy to use — testers said it “sprays well and is easy to comb out” — although, as is often the case, those with very dark hair found it left a chalky residue in places.

Some also found the fragrance to be a little too overbearing. However, it was praised for “immediately absorbing sebum” and how long it lasted, with very little product needed to do the job.

Score: 78/100

As the only foam dry shampoo in the list, this one sets itself apart when it comes to design. Once dried, testers said there wasn't any unpleasant residue, and hair didn't feel heavy, although some said their strands were a little sticky.

Positively, testers weren’t left with a white cast, they liked the soft floral scent and it left locks feeling fresher and cleaner. The foam also went a long way and helped boost volume.

Soap & Glory The Rushower Dry Shampoo

Soap & Glory The Rushower Dry Shampoo

Score: 77/100

With a fruity and floral scent, testers scored this dry shampoo highly for how quickly and easily it absorbed into their hair and helped remove excess grease.

They also found it didn't leave any noticeable marks behind, and left their hair feeling and looking fresher. On the downside, it didn't help add much volume, though.

Knight & Wilson Style Freedom Dry Shampoo

Knight & Wilson Style Freedom Dry Shampoo

Score: 74/100

For finer hair, this lighter textured spray helps prevent any stickiness and won’t feel too heavy.

Testers did find they had to use more of the product as it was so light but said this still didn't weigh down their hair. The panel also commented that it added volume and texture and helped locks look cleaner.

Neal & Wolf Dry Shampoo

Neal & Wolf Dry Shampoo

Score: 73/100

If you ever feel like your hair is harder to style after using a spritz of dry shampoo, our testers said they actually found it easier after using this spray.

Comments from our testers included: “It didn't feel too heavy on my hair”, “it brushed through nicely and my hair felt really soft,” “it definitely removed all the oiliness [from my hair]” and “it added volume and texture.”

The fragrance was quite divisive though, with some finding it pleasant while others said it was overpowering and lingered a very long time.

The Best Dry Shampoos for Travel, According to Hairstylists

The Best Dry Shampoos for Travel According to Hairstylists

Dry shampoo helps instantly refresh your strands, making it a must-have for travel–especially if you’re coming off of a long-haul flight . Fortunately, just a few spritzes of the hair staple is powerful enough to combat dirt, oil, sweat, and product buildup in a matter of seconds, meaning you can spend less of your precious vacation time washing, blowing, and styling hair.

The best dry shampoos can also eliminate the sometimes unpleasant odor that comes along with build-up and “promote[s] movement and a cleaner look,” says San Diego-based hairstylist Gina Rivera . L.A.–based hairstylist Bradley Leake also notes that a good dry shampoo pulls double duty by “lightly” volumizing the root while also absorbing excess oil to effectively eliminate greasy strands.

Put simply, “Dry shampoos are a necessity when traveling,” says Denver-based colorist and Aloxxi Creative Advisor Sam LaBella . “Changes in temperature and humidity can cause your scalp to overproduce natural oils, so having a travel-size dry shampoo in your bag is a lifesaver.”

To help narrow down your search, we asked stylists to recommend the best dry shampoos on the market. Ahead, our complete list of expert-approved (and TSA-friendly ) picks to pack on your next escape.

Best for oily hair

travel size dry shampoo uk

Rahua Voluminous Dry Shampoo is a favorite of New York City –based stylist and salon owner Nunzio Saviano for its plant-based ingredients—specifically clay and tapioca—that “add texture, absorb oil, and refresh the hair and scalp.” The clean, fresh scent is a bonus, especially after spending hours on a plane.

Image may contain: Bottle, and Shaker

L.A.–based hairstylist Genevieve Garner loves Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo for its 99 percent naturally derived, do-it-all formula. According to the stylist, it’s made with “charcoal to detoxify your scalp, witch hazel to balance out your oil production, and biotin to keep your stands strong.”

Image may contain: Bottle

Kerastase Mini Fresh Affair Refreshing Fine Fragrance Dry Shampoo is another favorite of Rivera’s. “This is a great product for those that are traveling or on the road as one application can last up to 24 hours,” she says. It’s also infused with vitamin E to support scalp and hair health.

Best for fine hair

Image may contain: Bottle, Shaker, Tin, Aluminium, Can, and Spray Can

Dull hair, begone! For voluminous tresses in a matter of seconds, Raven Hurtado, a stylist at Chicago’s Maxine Salon , recommends DryBar’s Mini Detox Dry Shampoo . Per the stylist, this versatile dry shampoo “works great on thin hair that needs a little extra volume.” Ingredient highlights include oil- and odor-absorbing rice powder and moisture-boosting golden root extract. Choose from three tantalizing scents: original (jasmine, sandalwood, and vanilla), lush (violet, sandalwood, and musk), and coconut colada (coconut water, lily of the valley, and coconut).

Best for thick hair

travel size dry shampoo uk

Spritz some R&Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo onto your roots for a quick boost of volume. Per Leake, this dry shampoo is “great for thicker hair as it’s strong enough to work wonders regardless of how heavy your hair is.” It’s also infused with nourishing ingredients like vitamin E and rice protein. The scent—which features notes of fig, bergamot, lotus, cedarwood, and tonka beans—adds a nice touch, too.

Best for color-treated hair

Image may contain: Bottle, and Cosmetics

According to Leake, the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo effectively removes dirt, oil, and sweat instead of simply masking it. The gentle yet effective formula makes it an excellent pick for colored and chemically treated hair. It’s also formulated with glycerin, which attracts moisture to the hair (so long, dry strands!).

Image may contain: Bottle, Shaker, and Cosmetics

Rivera recommends Pureology’s Mini Style + Protect Refresh & Go Dry Shampoo for its lightweight formula, which utilizes rice starch to absorb oil and buildup without drying or weighing down your strands. Per Rivera, it’s also “terrific for color-treated hair” since it features a slew of protective ingredients and a UV filter to prevent color from fading.

Best for dark hair

travel size dry shampoo uk

“For those that have darker hair color and find that most dry shampoos leave a white cast on your roots, this is the dry shampoo for you,” says Garner of Batiste’s Dry Shampoo in Divine Dark . Unlike traditional dry shampoos, this one offers a hint of pigment to seamlessly blend into dark hair—while simultaneously concealing gray or overgrown roots.

Best for sensitive scalps

Image may contain: Tin, Can, Bottle, and Shaker

According to Garner, the aptly named IGK Jet Lag Dry Shampoo is gentle enough “for even the most sensitive scalp.” The formula’s volcanic ash and ginger root extract are excellent for cleansing and softening, while vitamin-rich mango fruit extract adds extra nourishment.

travel size dry shampoo uk

According to Saviano, the Oribe Mini Gold Lust Dry Shampoo uses translucent powders that blend into the hair, which help extend your ‘do. It’s also enriched with rice silk, which, per the stylist, “leaves hair feeling soft and smooth.” Other highlights include antioxidant-rich bamboo, nourishing myrrh extract, and lavender and chamomile, both of which can help soothe itchy or irritated scalps. The stylist also praised the product’s long-lasting fragrance that “boosts its hair-refreshing benefits.”

Once upon a time, dry shampoos were just for keeping on standby for hair emergencies, but today they’re an everyday essential. While the hair saviour is still a godsend for covering-up greasy roots when we oversleep or want to fit in a sweaty workout in the middle of the day, we use them more for prolonging the days between hair washes, saving time, water and energy.

If there’s a haircare product that’s come of beauty age, it’s the humble dry shampoo. Gone are the heavy talc-in-a-bottle formulas, as with new innovation comes light, invisible sprays that do more than just mop up grease. The latest spritzes work much harder.

You can use dry shampoo to boost volume and add root lift to limp, lifeless strands; spray in texture for cool-girl strands; add grip and hold to an up-do, as well as bring a new lease of life to second-day curls, braids or whichever style you’ve spent time perfecting.

The key to getting the best results, and avoiding any chalkiness, with your dry shampoo is to do two things: the first is to spray and leave the dry shampoo for a couple of minutes, so it absorbs the excess oils and sweat properly – don’t just rub in and go as most people do.

The second is to brush or blow-dry the product out and not just let it sit and build up on the scalp. Do both and your stands will not only look clean but feel it too, especially if you’re using one from our round-up of best dry shampoos.

We looked for ease-of-use, fragrance, oil-absorption, how it left stands feeling and whether it created volume and texture.

Kérastase fresh affair dry shampoo

Kerastase fresh affair dry shampoo.png

  • Best : Overall
  • Size : 233ml

What makes this dry shampoo stand out in a crowded haircare category is not only how well it works, but the luxe fragrance it’s coupled with. Like many dry shampoos, it uses rice starch to mop up excess oil and add body, but the spray is so fine and lightweight that there’s zero powdery residues or chance of weighing hair down. It’s also paired with a dose of moisturising vitamin E that protects the hair from daily aggressors, as well as leaves it silky soft to the touch.

But it’s the neroli scent that makes this a real winning formula. Leaving a faint whisper of what could be an expensive perfume, it doesn’t overpower but lingers throughout the day. It’s worth every penny and has the bonus of being slightly larger than most dry shampoo bottles.

Living Proof perfect hair day advanced clean dry shampoo

Living Proof perfect hair day advanced clean dry shampoo.png

  • Best : clean-feeling hair
  • Size : 198ml

Promising comparable results to actually washing your hair with a rinse-out shampoo, we are pleased to report that this is as close to the real thing as you’re going to get. You also won’t find a dry shampoo that you can use for as many consecutive days as this – well without the dreaded itch setting in. We were impressed with how smooth, soft and shiny our strands not only looked but felt, helped by the specially-designed nozzle that evenly distributes the product with no grittiness or rough texture to the hair. A true cleansing formula rather than a volumising styling product.

Virtue refresh dry shampoo

Virtue refresh dry shampoo.png

  • Best : Dry and damaged hair
  • Size : 51ml

This dry shampoo, like all of Virtue’s haircare, contains a keratin protein identical to the one found in our tresses that can repair the broken structure of the strand – ideal for those with fragile, frizzy or damaged hair types. The dry mist uses tapioca starch and kaolin clay to absorb excess oil and sweat without leaving behind a powdery build-up and the fresh floral scent it’s teamed with adds to its appeal. There’s no contributing to build-up so we found you can even push your roots an extra few days before washing.

Batiste naturally dry shampoo green tea and chamomile

Batiste naturally dry shampoo green tea and chamomile.png

  • Best : Value
  • Size : 200ml

For purse-friendly hair-refreshers, you still can’t beat the endless choice from this iconic hair brand that sells over two cans every second globally. You’ll find a dry shampoo for every hair colour, hair type and styling option, but the latest Batiste naturally trio is our favourite yet. The brand has cut down on packaging use, and the formula is made with 100 per cent natural extracts, but the real winner for us are the new fragrances. You won’t find any overpowering scents like past formulas, these are more delicate and smell more like a luxe brand, especially this green tea and chamomile that reminds us of our favourite sandalwood perfume.

Klorane volumising dry shampoo with organic flax

Klorane volumising dry shampoo with organic flax.png

  • Best : Fine hair
  • Size : 150ml

Refreshing hair in-between washes since 1971, the French pharmacy brand Klorane is the pioneer of dry shampoo as we know it today. Originally created for mothers to use in hospital while giving birth, today the brand has a whole collection of grease-sapping bottles and sell one every nine seconds globally.

While all the formulas are worthy of a spot in your bathroom, this one is particularly good for root lift, as it’s loaded with flax fibres for body boosting as well as a blend of plant-based powders that rid strands of excess oil. For best results, remember to leave it in a couple of minutes to work its magic before styling. A few extra minutes won’t hurt either, we liked to spray, apply our make-up before coming back to brush out for super clean strands.

Boucleme foaming dry shampoo

Boucleme foaming dry shampoo.png

  • Best : Curls
  • Size : 100ml

Whether you’re blessed with tamer kinks or full-on coils, this brand specialises in looking after curls and has a first-rate dry shampoo for prolonging wash days in their line. With curly hair prone to dryness, this alcohol-free foam works a treat without leaving strands parched, like other formulas, with its wet foam-to-powder formula. Plus, it has a light scent that deodorises the scalp courtesy of aloe vera juice, peppermint and spearmint that adds to its performance. While we tried to apply and go with this one in a rush, we did find we preferred to use a diffuser for added root lift.

Hair by Sam McKnight lazy girl hair cleanse cloths

Hair by Sam McKnight lazy girl hair cleanse cloths.png

  • Best : Fringes
  • Size : 20 cloths

These innovative cleansing cloths from the legendary hairstylist’s haircare line work just like dry shampoo and make a quick fix for greasy roots, hairlines and fringes on the go. Infused with witch hazel to mop up grease and impurities, simply wipe over areas that need refreshing.

We love how they leave our hair feeling clean yet glossy and well-conditioned thanks to the added hair-loving ingredients. Plus, they’re certified compostable – made from tree pulp the brand promise they’re biodegradable in as little as six weeks. The only downside is the price, but if you’ve got bangs that can’t withstand the summer heat they’re the perfect handbag hero.

R+Co death valley dry shampoo

R+Co death valley dry shampoo.png

  • Best : Volume and texture
  • Size : 300ml

Named after one of the driest places on the planet, this works well as a dry shampoo eliminating excess oil without totally stripping strands. But, where it really comes into its own is as a root-lifter and texture spray. A must for those that get creative with their strands, and like to experiment with more lived-in looks or tousled styles – think California cool girl vibes. Fine hair types will want it in their haircare arsenal for providing body-boosting oomph too, and if you’re a master at updos it creates grit for brilliant hold. It also gets bonus points for its bergamot and woody scent that we couldn’t get enough of.

Davines more inside invisible dry shampoo

Davines more inside invisible dry shampoo.png

  • Best : Lightweight
  • Size : 250ml

From the Italian sustainable haircare brand comes this new offering which is equal parts brilliant refresher as well as a volume booster. Fast and effective at eliminating excess oil, we were super impressed with how light and clean it left strands feeling. For root lift, blast on to your roots and team with a classic upside-down head flick to let gravity work its magic, or spritz through the lengths without brushing it out to create the illusion of a fuller mane. Either way, we found it left strands beautifully soft, shiny and manageable thanks to the added moisturisers. And the subtle fragrance mix of vanilla and grapefruit adds to its stand-out qualities.

Sol de Janeiro dry shampoo

Sol de Janeiro dry shampoo.png

  • Best : Fragrance
  • Size : 57ml

Fans of the now infamous Sol de Janeiro bum bum body cream (£27.20, Boots.com ) will love this dry shampoo with the same exotic cheirosa 62 scent. Filling the nose with its nutty, vanilla and salted caramel scent, it acts like a perfume for the hair and lingers throughout the day. Kaolin clay and rice starch draw out impurities absorbing grease, while provitamin B5 strengthens and moisturises strands making it a top choice for performance too. Plus, it comes in a mini version perfect for easy packing on a summer get-away.

The verdict: Dry shampoos

You can’t beat the overall performance of the  Kérastase fresh affair dry shampoo . It’s user-friendly, leaves no dreaded residue and smells amazing. But if you’re looking for a purse-friendly dry shampoo the  Batiste naturally dry shampoo green tea and chamomile gets the job done nicely too and gives you change from a £5 note.

Bumble and Bumble Prêt-Á-Powder Très Invisible Dry Shampoo

Best dry shampoo with UV protection

Bumble and bumble prêt-á-powder très invisible dry shampoo, how do you use dry shampoo.

Simply apply a few spritzes, massage it in, brush through and voilà — you're ready. It’s as simple as that when it comes to application. However, there are a few other things to consider when it comes to how often you reach for your favourite can of the stuff.

As helpful as it is, dry shampoo shouldn't replace regular washing with shampoo and conditioner, as trichologist Victoria Scott , part of the Institute of Trichologists, explains. ‘Dry shampoos don’t only reduce the hydrophobic qualities of oils and sebum, they also dehydrate the follicle,’ she says. ‘Overuse can cause ‘hair and scalp damage, irritation, and even hair loss from blocked follicles.’

You should always hold the can 12 inches (30cm) away from your head, and Scott recommends spraying ‘towards the hair and scalp to prevent direct contact between the skin and the propellants, or excessive inhalation of the product.’

Dry shampoo also shouldn't be used on wet hair, despite what you may have read on social media. Instead of soaking up any extra sebum, as it does on dry hair, it will ‘reduce any moisture you've added during the actual hair wash with water,’ Scott explains. ‘This can have a long-term impact on the quality and condition of your hair and scalp.'

Is dry shampoo bad for me?

The key thing to remember is that dry shampoo is for occasional use. It shouldn't replace regular washing, as it doesn't cleanse the hair and scalp, and overuse can lead to dehydrated or blocked follicles.

Instead, only reach for dry shampoo to spruce yourself up between washes, as nothing quite replicates the effects (and feeling) of a really good scrub and rinse – and don't forget the conditioner .

How we test

We put 23 different dry shampoos through their paces in the WH Lab . We first applied artificial sebum to hair switches and recorded the amount of sebum present using a Sebumeter, a machine that measures how greasy the hair is. We then applied each dry shampoo to the switches and measured again, to see how effective they were at reducing the sebum levels.

We also asked 493 testers to spend two weeks trying them out, before feeding back on how effectively they reduced greasiness and whether their hair felt fresher overall after use. They also considered the finish of their hair after application, along with the overall design of the product.

Olaplex’s bond building treatments have solved many of our haircare woes, and our panel found its dry shampoo equally impressive.

Testers with dark hair found it particularly effective, as it doesn’t leave any annoying white cast, a common bugbear for those with darker locks. Formulated with a clear spray, they loved that it’s ‘completely invisible’, showing no signs of any white residue and didn’t feel ‘heavy or powdery in hair.’ Others noted how thick and full it made their hair feel, with plenty of long-lasting volume.

Key specifications

Giving great coverage, thanks to a powerful spray, our testers found this an easy-to-use dry product that effectively absorbed grease.

They liked how healthy it made their hair look, leaving it ‘shiny and refreshed’ and said it didn't ‘feel claggy on the scalp’. The effects were long-lasting and everyone enjoyed the scent, which also lingered longer than with other products tested. Some of our panel with dark hair did notice a slight white cast, though.

For those with fine hair, dry shampoo can be a godsend, as finer strands can often turn greasy more quickly. Enter Monday's OG dry shampoo, which testers said helped them go for longer between hair washes.

Formulated with miracle ingredient, keratin, this spray also helps improve the condition of hair. Testers said their hair felt clean, weightless and fresh after using it, although some noted it had a slightly tacky finish.

What sets this dry shampoo apart from the rest of the list is that it comes in an innovative foam form. It claims to be the perfect product for achieving ‘a wavy, beachy shape, without the crunch’. Our testers agreed that there was no crispy, mousse-like finish and their hair didn't feel heavy after use.

They also said that a little product went a long way and it didn't leave any white cast, although some found the finish a little sticky.

Neal & Wolf Dry Shampoo

This spray added lots of volume to our testers’ hair, while also banishing unwanted sebum. One person said it instantly added texture and volume to their usually flat locks.

Testers also liked how easy it was to style their hair after use and said it left their hair feeling soft and not too heavy. The musky fragrance proved a little divisive, with some finding it overpowering, while others enjoyed how long it lingered.

If you already have dry hair, adding dry shampoo to the mix can feel very counter productive. If that struggle sounds familiar, you may want to check out Klorane – its formula includes oat milk extract to help moisturise the hair, without adding greasiness.

Instead, it adds texture and body to the hair, while also effectively removing sebum. Some testers noted it left a white residue, but it brushed out easily and didn't feel sticky after.

We often forget that our scalps need sun protection too, but it's not like you can rub suncream into your roots. Helpfully, Bumble and Bumble has come up with a clever answer: dry shampoo with UV protection.

Testers found the formula invisible, as the name suggests, and didn't notice any residue after spraying. It left their hair looking and feeling fresher, but on the downside, it didn't add much volume.

The Best Travel-Size Dry Shampoos

If you know me, you know I love my dry shampoo to refresh my hair for a day or two to help it last longer in between washes. And when it comes to traveling, I tend to wash my hair even more often than I do at home especially if I’m doing a lot of outdoor activities. But sometimes having good travel-size dry shampoos when traveling does come in handy, especially for those days when I don’t have a lot of time at night and have to wake up early the next day. Not to mention, it’s also very useful after a long flight and you want to get rid of dirt and eliminate any unpleasant odors. And what I really like about dry shampoos is that they give my hair an extra volume boost that I very much need (here are  7 Ways To Instantly Fix A Bad Hair Day And Add Volume To Your Hair ).

I also find that having dry shampoos for traveling is a necessity as it can really manage the oils and grease in your hair as you encounter changes in climates and different environments. I’ve tried many different dry shampoos and have tested them all out to make sure that I can recommend the best dry shampoos that aren’t heavy, don’t leave a white residue, have a nice scent, add volume to the hair, and are travel-friendly. So here are the best dry shampoos for traveling that you’ll want to take with you for any trip.

IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo

IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo

This is probably the strongest dry shampoo I’ve used as it instantly helps with absorbing oil, refreshing the hair, eliminating odor, and adding volume with its charcoal powder. It provides a deep, detoxifying cleanse to help your hair last a couple more ldays. You just need to leave it on for 30 seconds to let the powders activate and then massage it into your scalp.

This dry shampoo does absorb oil in the hair  very  well so you may feel a bit of a residue or slightly dry effect but if you distribute it evenly enough, it will be very natural on your hair. And I like he nice scent that it has.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day (PhD) Dry Shampoo

Living Proof PhD Dry Shampoo

This was the first Living Proof Dry Shampoo I tried and I really liked the effectiveness of it. This award-winning travel-size dry shampoo is perfect for traveling as it helps with oil, sweat, and odor while adding body and texture. It also delivers a time-release scent which is fresh and light so it doesn’t bother me at all. I also like the minimal residue and that my hair is still quite flexible after using this. It is not as strong as the IGK First Class Dry Shampoo, but does a great job to revive and clean my hair.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day (PhD) Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo

Living Proof PhD Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo

After having a great experience with the original Living Proof Dry Shampoo, I knew I had to try the Advanced version. This dry shampoo is similar to the original one, but the advanced part of is that it makes your hair softer while adding shine so it looks like you’re fresh out of the shower. I found that this version is one of the best dry shampoos for traveling as well if you’re looking for a really clean outcome with less of a powder feel. It also balances sebum levels in your scalp and cleans like a rinse-out shampoo which makes your hair much more manageable and reinvigorated. This dry shampoo also allows you more time in between washes which can really help out when you’re traveling if you’re really lacking the time. As you may all know, if your hair is long like mine, it takes longer to wash and even longer to dry especially since hotel hair dryers are quite weak.

Both of the Living Proof Dry Shampoos are very effective and that’s why I shared them both, it’s just a matter of choosing what your needs or preferences are.

Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo

Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo

If you’ve read my other hair-related blog posts, you’ll know that I love the scent of all the Amika products. This cult-favorite and prestige travel-size dry shampoo gives a freshly-washed look, adds volume, and leaves no white residue. It is also nutrient-rich and they used a natural rice starch to absorb excess oil and reduces odor. You’ll get voluminous hair brought back to life and it isn’t heavy on the hair. With this dry shampoo, your hair will look and feel revitalized for your travels!

Customer Reviews

This dry shampoo is the FIRST dry shampoo that makes my hair look better the next day! My hair is fine and typically after a few hours of other dry shampoo by hair would look oily and greasy at the roots. With Rahua my hair looks better for days!!!!!

Con: The dry shampoo bottle is larger than its actual contents. Very expensive for the amount of product. Pros: Does a fantastic job at absorbing oil. Also, has a great scent to it. Would recommend if you have money to drop

I love this product! Works great to eliminate oiliness between washes or if there’s no time to wash. Really easy to use, quick brush out and you’re done.

For the higher end price: I was hoping for a spray on product, in a slightly larger bottle.

Best Shampoo and conditioner for dry hair - woman stood in the countryside with flowing hair

Despite using the best shampoo and conditioner daily, it can be tricky to find the right combo that works for your scalp and strands, particularly if you have really dry hair. There are a number of reasons your hair can feel and look dry, including changes in hormones, overuse of tools, constant hair dyeing, medical conditions, and environmental factors (like time in a hot climate or lots of swimming). Finding out what's causing it can be really handy in solving the issue, but there are lots of products that can help, too. And it can start as simply as using the best shampoo and conditioners for dry hair.

Shampoo and conditioners (along with intense moisture masks and clever hair oils ) are a great way to keep our dry hair in tip top health, despite being a seemingly 'boring' part of our routine. You just need to know where to look to find the gems.

As a beauty editor who gets sent hundreds of hair products, I've trialled my fair share so have thoughts when it comes to the very best. Here are the top shampoos and conditions for dry hair, no matter your budget (we've got drugstore shampoos in here too) or hair type.

1. Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner Duo

Moroccanoil hydrating shampoo and conditioner duo, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Moroccanoil is an excellent option for anyone with dry hair. Key ingredients include argan oil and vitamin E and A, the former helps improve the condition of lengths and the latter aids scalp condition (which later helps the hair strands). It gives my hair an instant feeling of intense moisture, leaving it incredibly soft. If you have straight hair, you'll be left with sleek strands or if you've got coils, defined curls. It also has the brand's signature scent, which always makes hair washing that little bit nicer.

2. Ouai Fine Hair Bundle

Ouai fine hair bundle.

Having both dry and fine hair can be really frustrating when it comes to using products that are conditioning enough without completely weighing the hair down. Enter: Ouai. This duo works to cleanse the scalp without stripping it of natural oils and then load it up with moisture without being OTT. The conditioner features biotin, keratin, chia seed and hemp oil to keep it feeling great but also less prone to breakage when brushing and styling.

I really like to use a small amount of conditioner before shampooing (the hair sandwiching method) to keep the ends feeling hydrated without overdoing it and making it look or feel greasy or heavy. Plus, it's Ouai so smells incredibly elegant.

3. CCharles Worthington MenoPlex Volumising Shampoo

Charles worthington menoplex volumising shampoo and conditioner.

Made with peri menopause and menopause in mind which can cause the skin and hair to feel more dry than before due to hormone changes, this Charles Worthington duo (sold separately) addresses that, as well as volume.

Adding volume is also great for menopause related hair thinning as it gives the illusion of fuller, thicker-looking hair. The conditioner is thick without weighing the hair down and gives a really smooth, frizz-free finish.

4. Arkive All Day Shampoo and Conditioner

Arkive all day shampoo and conditioner.

Arkive is a fantastic affordable option when it comes to haircare, including the brand's shampoo and conditioner. It's not the most conditioning, but I've found that many of the ultra conditioning options are on the more expensive end so this is a fantastic budget but brilliant option. Its key ingredient is baobab (both oil and protein), which helps to add hair moisture and strength.

5. Aussie Miracle Moist Vegan Hair Conditioner

Aussie miracle moist vegan hair conditioner.

Aussie isn't exactly anything new but my goodness is it good. The scent alone is stunning but it conditions and coats the hair incredibly well, too. Its key ingredient is Australian macadamia nut oil, which helps to deeply conditioner the hair. If you find your ends are particularly dry, this will really help.

6. Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo

Dove intensive repair shampoo.

I always stock up on a bottle of this gem of a budget option from Dove. It gives hair a great clean feeling without stripping it (though greasy scalps might need a little extra cleaning once a week from a clarifying shampoo ) and making it feel or look dry. Think of it as the comforting classic Dove shower gels but for your hair. When it comes to dryness, it helps repair the hair on the inside and make it look and feel less frazzled on the outside.

7. Beauty Pie Super Healthy Hair Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner Duo

Beauty pie super healthy hair moisturizing shampoo and conditioner duo.

If you want to feel like you're getting premium hair care at an affordable cost then Beauty Pie should be your go-to. I really rate this shampoo and conditioner due, because it does just as it promises in cleansing the scalp, moisturising and leaving hair feeling incredibly soft. If you love your hair to feel silky soft then you'll love this pair. If you bleach your hair or use heat more than you'd like leaving you with straw-like ends, introduce these two into your routine.

8. Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair!™ Super Moisture Shampoo

Briogeo don't despair, repair™ super moisture shampoo.

This shampoo is great for everyone, particularly those with curly hair. The formula is packed full of shea butter, panthenol, glycerin, algae extract, rosehip oil (to name a few), which get to work protecting strands and the scalp whilst cleansing. Ingredients like glycerin work particularly well on thick curly and coily hair as it prevent excess drying.  I don't have curly hair, but I use this alongside the conditioner and my hair is always thankful. It also smells fantastic, which is a bonus.

9. Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Conditioner

Shea moisture manuka honey & mafura oil intensive hydration conditioner.

This conditioner is fantastic at saving my dry, brittle ends when I've overdone it on the styling and colouring. The star of the show here is Mankua honey which acts as a humectant that curly hair loves to seal in moisture. Shea butter (an ingredient the brand is centred around) is a hero at both moisturising and hydrating the hair making it an excellent option for reviving dry strands on thicker hair types.

Benefits Of Travel Dry Shampoo

woman running her fingers thru her hair

Travel size dry shampoo is a lifesaver for those on-the-go moments when you need a quick hair refresh but don't have the time or resources for a full wash. Its compact size makes it easy to fit into any travel bag, purse, or even your pocket, ensuring you can always have fresh-looking hair, no matter where you are.

One of the biggest benefits of travel size dry shampoo is its convenience. Whether you're traveling, heading to the gym, or simply in a rush, this product is an easy solution for removing excess oil and giving your hair a clean, volumized look. How To Apply Dry Shampoo

woman with blonde hair running her hands thru her hair

Dry shampoo is a fantastic hair care product that can help refresh and revitalize your hair between washes. It's perfect for those busy days when you need a quick fix to absorb excess oil and add volume. However, proper application is key to maximizing the benefits of dry shampoo. Here are the steps to correctly apply it:

  • Shake the dry shampoo bottle : This ensures that the ingredients are well mixed before application.
  • Hold the bottle four to six inches away from your roots : This distance allows the product to disperse evenly without overwhelming any one area.
  • Spray in short bursts : Aim directly at the roots and spray. Short bursts ensure that the product is distributed evenly without leaving heavy deposits
  • Section your hair : Divide your hair into medium-sized sections to make sure the dry shampoo reaches all areas of your scalp.
  • Apply before bedtime (optional) : If you want to wake up with refreshed hair, consider applying your dry shampoo before you go to bed. This allows the product to absorb oil overnight.

In conclusion, using dry shampoo is an excellent way to extend the life of your hairstyle and maintain a fresh look between washes. By following these steps, you can make the most out of your dry shampoo and enjoy the convenience it offers. Remember, less is more when it comes to dry shampoo, so start with a small amount and add more if necessary. Happy styling!

Another impressive feature of this dry shampoo is its UV protection. In today's world where exposure to harmful UV rays is almost inevitable, having a hair care product that offers this feature is highly beneficial. It helps to safeguard the hair against potential damage such as color fading, brittleness, and dryness. The shampoo comes in a handy spray form, ensuring easy application. Moreover, it carries the signature Moroccanoil scent - a delightful blend of musk, vanilla, and citrus that leaves the hair smelling fresh and pleasant.

The 11 Very Best Dry Shampoos

Portrait of Rachael Griffiths

In this article

Best dry shampoo overall.

  • Best volumizing
  • Best for dark hair
  • Best for curly hair
  • Best scented
  • Best for scalp concerns
  • Best foams and pastes

For me, dry shampoo is as essential as deodorant . I’m someone who likes to keep hair washes to a minimum (I have quickly fading, color-treated hair ), so I’ve tested out dozens of dry shampoos in my quest to keep my hair cherry-red .

At the most basic level, a good bottle of dry shampoo should completely neutralize the appearance of oil (or impurities like dirt) in your hair. But truly great dry shampoos will do all this while also adding freshness and oomph back into days-old hair: A product like Klorane’s powder puts the “shampoo” in dry shampoo (I’ve used it for up to five days in a row). This distinction is especially apparent when you use it for several applications. It’s essential that the formulas I use won’t leave any sticky or powdery buildup on my hair; once I work it into my roots, I want it to be entirely imperceptible. It’s also a huge pro when I find one that smells just as nice as the rest of my hair products (I find some drugstore bottles smell a little too synthetic for my taste, which is why you won’t see Batiste here).

As each head of hair is different, so too is each bottle of dry shampoo . While I’ve tested several of the below, I don’t have curly or thick hair . So, to find the best for each hair type, I also interviewed nine hair-care experts, such as celebrity stylists and master colorists to find out which products they recommend in their salons and the best formulas if you have dry or flaky scalp concerns.

What we’re looking for

Ingredients.

Dry shampoos at their core contain oil-absorbing ingredients, the most popular being a form of starch (usually a rice starch) and oat milk. Several dry shampoos also offer added benefits to the hair and scalp such as aloe vera and niacinamide for flaky scalps, charcoal to suck up oils, or vitamins that plump the hair and promote growth. Below, I’ve broken down the most prominent ingredients in each bottle of dry shampoo.

Powder, spray, or foam

I’ve also listed what form the dry shampoo takes in case you already have a preference. The most popular is a spray, but if you’re not into aerosols, I’ve also found several powders as well as a paste and a foam.

Klorane Dry Shampoo With Oat Milk — Nonaerosol

Ingredients: Oat milk | Powder

I tested this Strategist-favorite dry shampoo over the festive season and finally understood why, for three years, this dry shampoo has sat at the top of our list of favorites (and why Strategist  readers buy it in droves ).

I’d never dealt with a powder dry shampoo before, so I was careful to follow hairstylist Ben Talbott’s advice to “go easy” to prevent any product buildup as I tapped on a layer each morning. I could get a color appointment only in early December but wanted my hair to look freshly red for the holidays, so I used this dry shampoo consistently over the course of five days. Even after daily use, there was no visible layer, itchiness, or tackiness across my scalp or hair, even though my hair is on the thinner side. As someone with thinner hair, my only tiny gripe is that on day four, the dry shampoo makes my hair slightly too soft and slippery to style.

I think this is a great choice for all hair types (and four of the hairstylists who recommended this product to me agree) — and combined with its grease-zapping abilities and fresh scent, I’m calling it my top pick.

Best volumizing dry shampoo

Drybar Detox Thickening Shampoo

Ingredients: Rice powders | Spray

Usually, a dry shampoo would give my hair an extra day or two between washes. But since using the Drybar dry shampoo, I can easily get away with washing my hair once a week . (As someone that’s had to wash their hair every other day since being a teenager, this is no small feat.) What makes this dry shampoo stand out is that it doesn’t just neutralize grease, but gives the hair a plumper, fuller look from the scalp down .

Unlike the soft and slippery Klorane, the Drybar spray adds some serious grip to my hair, from root to tip. Even with this grip, I still don’t notice any itchiness or buildup. After using it for two or three days on the go, I can easily work through my hair with a round brush and a hair dryer , meaning my hair still looks freshly done — even on day five. I love the smell, which is a subtle and not-at-all sickly vanilla , and even enjoy how the buttery yellow can looks when it’s perched on my shelf.

It’s not a best-in-class pick, though, as a bottle will last me only around three to four weeks — unlike Klorane, which is a similar price and can last double that.

Best less-expensive volumizing dry shampoo

Sexy Hair Big Sexy Hair Dry Shampoo

Ingredients: Rice starch | Spray

For me, “ root plumping ” foams and powders just further weigh my hair down, having the complete opposite effect. That’s where some good body from a dry shampoo comes in. If you’re only going to use this product as a volume booster before styling, you can afford to spend less — don’t waste your Drybar in pursuit of a beehive. Hairstylist Henry de la Paz , recommends Sexy Hair, telling me “you’ll get the va-va-voom volume without the product buildup”. If you get this, he notes you’ll want to apply it a bit differently: In order to get maximum volume, you have to let this dry shampoo sit on your hair for two minutes before brushing it out or styling.

Best dry shampoo for dark hair

Kristin Ess Style Reviving Brunette Dry Shampoo

Ingredients: Rice starch, argan oil | Spray

As a natural brunette, I noticed that while the sprays that come out white — such as Moroccanoil or drugstore options like Batiste — are imperceptible in daylight, they can leave a really obvious faded glare when a flash or an LED is involved . But this dry shampoo actually has a neutral brown tint to help it blend into darker hair colors. Hairstylist Aviva Jansen Perea uses this Kristin Ess shampoo on clients before they step in front of a camera. “This product lets me breathe easy knowing that when the cameras flash, they won’t pick up any of the white powder,” she says. De la Paz also told me about this dry shampoo, noting it lacks sulfates and parabens and contains vitamins that he says help nourish hair that has been damaged from years of dyeing or being styled with heat. If you have darker hair but aren’t a fan of this shampoo’s floral scent, Redken also make a dry shampoo for darker-colored hair that is entirely fragrance free.

Best dry shampoo for curly hair

Hair by Sam McKnight Lazy Girl Dry Shampoo

Ingredients: Various starches | Spray

Curly hair requires a lot of moisture, so using a dry shampoo might seem counterintuitive. But Talbott says this one from celebrity stylist Sam McKnight works particularly well for hair that’s “thick, kinky, and curly.” The ultralightweight translucent formula won’t dry or weigh down delicate curls, and with notes of water lily, green stem, and juniper wood, it also smells “sublime, like a breath of fresh air,” he promises.

Best lightweight volumizing dry shampoo

Redken Dry Texture Finishing Spray

“This spray will create instant undone texture and volume with a soft, weightless finish,” says hair colorist Tara Burke . The spray uses a mixture of starches to absorb excess oil across the scalp — but as the product is designed to be lightweight and resist building up, it can also be spritzed through the ends of the hair for added volume from root to tip. It works best on second- or third-day straight and wavy hair, when there’s just a hint of oil. Burke loves that the spray becomes imperceptible, absorbing without leaving any powdery residue.

Best texturizing dry shampoo

R+Co Skyline Dry-Shampoo Powder

Ingredients: Potent form of silica | Powder

The experts I spoke to mentioned various dry shampoos from R+Co, but the Skyline Dry-Shampoo Powder came up the most. One of its fans is Campbell, who says it’s not only great for minimizing gunk built up from sweat but also for “extending your blow-dry or style for the next couple of days.” The same ingredient that absorbs oil — diatomaceous earth — also adds a bit of texture and grip to hair, which is what helps extend a style. This dry shampoo also contains jojoba-seed oil to help condition hair and add a bit of shine. Hairstylist Jasmine Burnside calls it her “all-time favorite dry shampoo” because, like the Klorane product that tops our list, this is a powder, not an aerosol spray. “I find it way more effective than an aerosol at absorbing excess oil from your scalp.” Like the Hairstory dry shampoo, this powder’s concentrated formula makes the product last longer. “I have had one bottle for almost two years,” says Burnside, who cautions it may not be the best for darker-colored hair because you “really have to work it” if you apply too much or too close to your scalp.

Best scented dry shampoo

Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo

Ingredients: Various starches, bamboo and rice silk | Spray

Two hairstylists raved about Oribe’s dry shampoo. Sahar Hissami describes it as “smelling like a luxurious perfume.” It’s worth noting that Oribe’s is by far the most expensive dry shampoo on this list, but De La Paz promises it’s “worth every penny.” The fragrance is based on Oribe’s signature Côte d’Azur scent, which includes notes of bergamot, jasmine, and sandalwood. While the smell is palpable, the experts say it’s not too overwhelming. The formula, which works for all hair types and textures, contains a blend of starches and is translucent, allowing it to quickly absorb oil and treat scalp impurities without weighing hair down or leaving white spots.

Best dry shampoo for very oily scalps

IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo

Ingredients: Charcoal, white-tea powder | Spray

Those familiar with charcoal masks for the face or skin will recognize the ingredient in this dry shampoo. Hissami says the formula combines charcoal with white-tea powder to create a dry shampoo that “deeply cleanses your scalp,” regardless of hair type or texture. Its marquee ingredient helps to lift dirt and absorb excess oil, while the white-tea powder acts as a calming agent to prevent any irritation.

Best dry shampoo for flaky scalps

Philip Kingsley Flaky Scalp Soothing Dry Shampoo

Ingredients: Starches, aloe vera | Spray

If you have issues with your scalp, then you’ll want to make sure you’re not washing your hair every single day as this may exacerbate the problem. However, that’s not to say you should barely wash your hair at all — a few times a week is the sweet spot. A good dry shampoo can help prolong time between washing — Talbott calls this “the perfect solution if you have dandruff or scaly scalp issues.” As he explains, “it’s been formulated to target the root cause of dandruff and clears up any excess sebum, keeping you balanced and refreshed.” The product absorbs oil with a blend of starches, while ingredients like bisabolol (a derivative of chamomile), niacinamide, aloe vera, and methyl lactate (a cooling agent) all work together to soothe and calm inflammation as well as improve the scalp’s appearance.

Best dry-shampoo foam

Ouai Dry-Shampoo Foam

Ingredients: Rice starch | Foam

A foam might seem like an odd texture for dry shampoo, but several brands from Strategist-favorite Verb to Bumble and Bumble have them in their range. Perea says this is because they’re actually fantastic for volume if you have thin, fine hair. “You give the can a really good shake and pump out a golf-ball-size amount of foam and rub it on the scalp,” she says. “The wetness will dissipate and provide a lift that is hard to achieve with powder.” The foamy consistency, she adds, makes it easier to dictate where the product goes. Plus, “this stuff smells amazing,” Perea says.

How do experts apply dry shampoo? Spray it on six inches away from the scalp in sections, wait 20 seconds, and then use a brush to evenly distribute the powders. "Don’t spray one spot too long," says Brager. "It can cause a buildup of product."

If you've seen headlines about dry shampoo recalls due high levels of benzene, don't fret. "Dry shampoos with earth-friendly and cleaner ingredients like rice powder or natural clay are safe to use and effective,” says hairstylist and founder of his eponymous brand Frédéric Fekkai . “We vote for kaolin clay, used to make porcelain and also found in luxury skincare, because the ultra-fine particles absorb excess oils, dirt, and odor from the scalp without causing clogging buildup.”

We rounded up the 15 most effective–and safe–oil-absorbing dry shampoos on the market, from ones that calm the scalp to sprays that double as volumizers.

Olaplex makes some of our favorite hair-healing products, so we were super curious about their new take on dry shampoo. This formula is by far the lightest on this list, and it doesn't leave that tell-tale powdery finish on hair. Micro starches help absorb oil without causing buildup that can inhibit healthy hair growth, and the brand's patented bond-building technology helps repair damage with each spritz. If you hate the feeling of dry shampoo, this is the one to try.

Customer Review: "I love this dry shampoo!! I use dry shampoo all the time. I liked that this one didn’t feel like it caused my scalp to have a lot of build up. I have a very sensitive scalp so some dry shampoos tend to make my head itch and this didn’t." — SierraSparkle

If you're a fan of Moroccanoil's iconic treatment oil, you'll love this oil-absorbing spray that boasts the same signature scent and argan oil, but with rice starch to draw out excess oil in the hair.

Customer Review: "I LOVE this dry shampoo. I didn’t know how to use it at first, but if I use it when my hair just starts to go limp/flat/shows the first signs of grease or heaviness, not only does it revive it back right away but it extends my wash for several days after. Those days will have full, bouncy hair that looks like I didn’t miss any wash days." — nyfashionista

Living Proof's advanced version of their cult-favorite dry shampoo helps balance the scalp's sebum for fresher hair now and over time. It's the one dry shampoo on this list to try if you're seriously oily.

Customer Review: "I have tried many many dry shampoos. They all break my scalp out and seem to make my hair worse. This is absolutely amazing!!! It has worked so well and no issues what so ever! It gives me volume and my hair looks and feels clean too!!!" — Kendall S.

Not only does this Oribe dry shampoo provide a luxurious experience, but it expertly absorbs excess oil, dirt, and product buildup to bring life back to hair while adding mega volume.

Customer Review: "First impression is wow this is beautiful packaging! I like the scent it’s luxurious and clean smelling, I tried a little bit and I’m happy with it." — Kristinal17

Vegamour's Gro Dry Shampoo utilizes the same properties as its popular hair maintenance essentials, and uses plant-based phytoactives to absorb excess scalp oil.

Customer review: "It has a nice fragrance, and doesn’t leave a white residue on my hair. It’s great for adding volume, or absorbing oil when I don’t have time to wash my hair. Very happy with this product." — Michelle Z.

This invisible spray contains good-for-your-hair ingredients like apple extract to reduce shedding and kaolin clay, which calms scalp irritation and balances the pH of chemically-treated hair, Fekkai says.

Customer Review: "I love it. I have very dark brown hair and a lot of dry shampoos leave visible residue but this one combs out great. For me this seems to last way longer in my hair that a lot of other dry shampoos I've tried. A bit pricey, but I'm willing to do that for the results." — Anonymous

With over 14,000 5-star reviews, this affordable dry shampoo adds body and texture, while removing the look of oil in seconds. Reviews advise to thoroughly rub in the white powder.

Customer Review: "I have dark brown hair that is thin. It gets greasy after a day. I used this on day two and it kept my hair ungreasy looking for legit 2 days. The white powder needs a good rub in since I have dark hair but it works well and the bottle is massive!! Used very little for the amount of time this worked. I would recommend!" — Holly

Hate the feeling of a chalky, drying powder? Opt for a lotion-to-powder formula. R+Co Bleu's weightless option not only addresses greasy hair, but it also reduces frizz and helps detangle hair with the brand's molecule complex and radish root ferment, respectively. Rub a small amount between your fingers and work into roots (this also adds texture and volume).

Customer Review: "Smells like heaven. I’ve used this product in a preventive manner as opposed to using after my hair is greasy from being active, so I’m uncertain how if would perform on already very oily hair. I’m so happy to find this spray-alternative as I don’t want to breathe in more dry shampoo aerosols and am tired of white cast messes. This product keeps oil at bay and there’s no powdery mess." — AnnikaMM

This refreshing dry shampoo won't weigh your hair down, and has a fresh scent that reviewers are raving about.

Customer Review: "I am obsessed with this dry shampoo. I have tried soooo many different dry shampoo products and nothing comes close to this dry shampoo. It does the trick and it really holds in the oil after three days of not washing my hair. It's definitely worth the price! You won't regret it." — Manda

Look for a dry shampoo that has ingredients that benefit your scalp, says Brager, who recommends Rodan + Fields's dry shampoo that has chamomile extract to calm and soothe skin. "Bonus that it gives you incredible body and washes out easily," she adds.

Customer Review: "I love this dry shampoo. It refreshes my thin, often oily hair and doesn’t weigh it down. Definitely my new favorite!" — Trish_Yesalonis

Amika Perk Up Talc-Free Dry Shampoo

Perk Up Talc-Free Dry Shampoo

Users say this dry shampoo is easy to use and requires little elbow greasy to blend into hair. It has natural rice starch to deliver a bouncy style and sea buckthorn, which is packed with vitamin C, vitamin A, and fatty acids, to nourish hair between wash days.

Customer Review: "Finally picked up one of these and OMG it is so worth the hype. I have tried a lot of different ones so far, and hate the heavy feeling that you are left with when using certain formulas. THIS DOES THE OPPOSITE!! My scalp and hair feels refreshed and clean and light." — Melody A.

Kaia Naturals Overnight Dry Shampoo

Overnight Dry Shampoo

This powder is a must-have to extend wash days and prevent greasy hair from the get-go. Apply it before bed, and let the clarifying charcoal, tapioca starch, and kaolin clay soak up oil, sweat, and dirt for a refreshed style come morning.

Customer Review: "This is amazing for low maintenance hair! At first, I forgot to put it in at night (although it still works during the day!), but it's great to wake up with refreshed hair and be ready for the day. I love that it's not staining my sheets but blending in with my newly darkened roots." — Taylor

Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk

Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk

This French pharmacy staple uses oat milk as a key ingredient to clean and soothe hair in just a single spritz.

Customer Review: "It feels super light on your hair and gives you a ton of volume. I consider it one of my holy grails because I am always on the go and don't always have time to wash my hair every other day. If you spray it on your scalp, the night before, it makes your hair look even better!" — Lizzie C.

Crown Affair The Dry Shampoo

The Dry Shampoo

Just when you thought applying dry shampoo couldn't be chic and luxurious, Crown Affair launched its innovative take on refreshing hair. This superfine powder comes with a kabuki brush to lightly dust the formula into roots while Japanese persimmon powder acts as a natural deodorizer.

Customer Review: "I really enjoy using this product. I mainly use it in the front of my hair (hairline and bangs) and dust a little on my center part and the sides, so I don't have problems working this into my hair like some other reviewers mention. I find that it does just the job of keeping me looking less oily on the days that I don't wash my hair. " — Archie123

Pureology Style + Protect Refresh & Go Dry Shampoo

Style + Protect Refresh & Go Dry Shampoo

For under $10, snag this shine-boosting dry shampoo that can be used days in a row without building up on the scalp. Pro tip: Let the product sit for 30 to 60 seconds to fully absorb oil before working into roots.

Customer Review: "Smells good and lasts longer than any other dry shampoo I’ve ever used. Totally with the cost. I’m blonde so I haven’t noticed any problems with white residue but that misfit be something to consider if you have darker hair." — hayleyk1

line break

Dry shampoos absorb excess oil and sweat from the hair and scalp, which gives the appearance of clean, fresh hair. They can be a lifesaver if you’re in a time crunch to extend your hairstyle, in humid climates, or between wash days. Dry shampoo can also be used to add texture and volume when styling. Some dry shampoos contain technology that actually capture oil and remove it from the scalp, but will need to be applied with extra care. Be sure to always read the instructions on the dry shampoo bottle.

Is using dry shampoo good for your hair?

line break

Dry shampoo can do wonders for extending wash days and refresh the hair. However, it shouldn't be a replacement for regular shampooing because "it doesn’t remove oil, pollution, scalp flakes, or product buildup from the scalp and hair," Fekkai warns. "This buildup combined with dry shampoo can clog the hair follicles, leading to scalp irritation, inflammation, increased hair fall and thinning of the hair shaft as nutrients are blocked from the follicle."

Experts wax poetic that scalp care is alike skin care. "Just like you would wash your face to remove debris from your pores, you must make sure to do the same for your scalp, which is where healthy hair starts," says Brager. Try a scalp scrub or clarifying shampoo weekly to ensure no dry shampoo residue is left behind.

How often should you use dry shampoo?

line break

Resist the urge to use dry shampoo every day, experts say. "I recommend using dry shampoo no more than two or three days in a row," Brager explains. "Make sure it is evenly distributed." Before applying dry shampoo, the stylist suggests brushing hair using a boar bristle brush to help move around product (without contributing to frizz) that may be sitting on the scalp; then go in with dry shampoo.

How can you avoid white residue from dry shampoo?

line break

While white residue is pretty normal when wearing dry shampoo, some types are less likely to leave marks. "Avoid talc or tapioca-based dry shampoos," Fekkai says. But if your current dry shampoo rotation leaves a residue, don't worry. There are a few ways to mitigate the white hue. "Spray the dry shampoo on your roots the night before, then the dry shampoo will absorb the oil, and your pillowcase will shake away the white cast," Fekkai adds.

Another tip is to avoid spraying heavily directly to the top of your hair. "Instead, start at ear level and lift layers of the hair, spraying gradually upward." And when it doubt, flash cool air from your hair dryer to disperse any traces of white. "Fingers have a lot of natural oils, and using your hands to rub away the residue inadvertently adds more oil," Fekkai says.

Business Practices

Business meetings are typically formal and Russian businessmen largely stick to numerous formalities. For example, to address a Russian by his first name, unless invited to do so, may be considered an insult. If the guest speaks Russian, they should be sure to use the vy (formal) form, not the ty (informal) form. Address Russians with their titles and their last names: "Chairman Mironov", "General Designer Medvedov". Many fledgling Russian entrepreneurs speak at least some English, but if business is outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg, or if you are dealing with large factories or institutes, it may be more difficult to find English speakers. At the end of a formal visit, Russians like to exchange gifts. Usually, a company manager may present a pin or pen with a company logo. The foreign visitor should also bring a small gift -- pens, pins, cups, or plates with company logos are probably the best. Office hours are 0900-1800 Monday to Friday.

Recent police statistics for Moscow report an overall decline in crime, though drug-related crimes, murders, and kidnappings have increased, and street crime, sometimes violent, remains a continuing problem. Nevertheless, crimes against foreigners is a problem, especially in major cities. Pickpocketings, assaults, and robberies occur frequently and at any time or place. The most vulnerable areas include underground walkways and the subway, overnight trains, train stations, airports, markets, tourist attractions, restaurants, hotel rooms, and residences, even when locked or occupied. Groups of children are known to assault and rob foreigners on city streets or underground walkways. Foreigners who have been drinking alcohol are especially vulnerable to assault and robbery in or around nightclubs or bars, or on their way home. Robberies may occur in taxis shared with strangers. Travelers have found it safer to travel in groups organized by reputable tour agencies. Thieves, known as 'banditry' in Russian also frequently target hotel rooms. The Ukraina hotel is the site of the most frequent reported crimes. The hotel administration has established a consistent pattern of allowing thieves free access and failing to cooperate in investigating complaints. One foreigner awoke on his first night in Moscow to find two thieves letting themselves into his room with a passkey. When they started to carry out his still packed luggage he confronted them and received a three-inch gash across his throat and two slit nostrils for his trouble. Instead of cooperating with the police, the hotel administration slandered the victim, saying he was entertaining prostitutes in his room. There have been sporadic attacks on foreigners by "skinhead" groups in some Russian urban centers. Many of these attacks appear to target university students, particularly those of Asian and African origin. Travelers are urged to exercise caution in areas frequented by "skinhead" groups and wherever large groups have gathered. Demonstrations occur frequently in Moscow and other cities. While these demonstrations have been peaceful and controlled, it is best to avoid such gatherings. Extortion and corruption are common in the business environment. Organized criminal groups target foreign businesses in many cities and have been known to demand protection money under threat of serious violence. Many Western firms hire security services, which have improved their overall security, although this is no guarantee. Small businesses are particularly vulnerable. Since the mid-1990's, several foreign business people have been attacked, kidnapped, and even killed. Extortion attempts should be reported to the Russian authorities and the businessperson's embassy or consulate. Business people who utilize local services for banking, security and medical treatment should limit the information provided to the minimum required, as reports have been received indicating that some individuals working in these sectors have passed confidential credit/financial, banking and medical information to organized crime gangs who use it to make extortion threats against foreigners.

While tourist facilities exist in Moscow and some other large cities, they are not developed in most of Russia and many of the goods and services taken for granted in other countries are not yet available. Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novgorod, Samara, Sochi and Vladivostok have western-style hotels, though priced at a premium compared with other major cities of the world. Outside the major cities, traditional Russian hotels often provide fairly modest accommodations, again for surprisingly high prices. It is possible to find remarkably well- appointed hotels in relatively small communities; it is also possible to find yourself temporarily without water or electricity when visiting other regions of Russia. As previously discussed, we recommend against staying at the Ukraina as foreigners staying there have often been victims of hotel theft.

Communications

Telephone IDD is available. Country code: 7. When dialing the Russian Federation from abroad, the 0 of the area code must not be omitted. Outgoing international code: 810. The Russian telecommunications system suffers from a lack of installed lines, outmoded switching equipment, and inadequate revenues to finance investment. The Ministry of Communications is dedicated to bringing the telecommunications infrastructure up to international norms as quickly as possible, and many multinational firms are vying for the opportunity to help in this undertaking. Although telephones, fax machines, and package delivery are available in Russia, they are often unreliable, especially outside the major cities (Moscow, St. Petersburg, etc.) and lengthy delays in service are not uncommon. International calls should be made through the hotel desk. Most international calls made from the cities of Moscow, St Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod can be dialed directly, but in smaller cities and towns it may be necessary to go through the international operator and these should be booked well in advance. Post office hours: 0900-1900.

Electricity

is 220 volts AC, 50Hz. Electricity 220 volts AC, 50Hz.

Food And Dining

The kind of food visitors will eat from day to day depends on which city they are visiting and the time of year. Breakfast is often similar to the Scandinavian, with cold meats, boiled eggs and bread served with Russian tea. For the midday and evening meal the food is often more traditional, again depending on the region. National specialties: ? Kasha (porridge) is a staple breakfast dish, made with milk and oats, buckwheat or semolina. ? Blini (small pancakes filled with caviar, fish, melted butter or sour cream). ? Ponchiki (hot sugared doughnuts). ? Pirozhky (fried rolls with different fillings, usually meat). ? Borshch, a beetroot soup served hot with sour cream. ? Pelmeni (meat dumplings). Things to know: Drinks are ordered by grams or by the bottle. City-center bars close around midnight. National drinks: ? Chai (sweet tea served without milk). ? Vodka (often flavored and colored with herbs and spices such as zubrovka (a kind of grass), ryabinovka (steeped with rowan-tree berries), starka (dark, smooth, aged vodka) and pertsovka (with hot pepper). Posolskaya, Stolichnaya and Rossiskaya are popular brands. ? Krushon (cold 'punch'; champagne, brandy and summer fruit are poured into a hollowed watermelon and chilled for several hours). ? Nalivka (sweet liqueur made with fruit or berries). ? Nastoika is a fortified wine made of herbs, leaves, flowers, fruit and roots of plants with medicinal properties. Tipping: Hotels in Moscow and other large cities include a 10 to 15 per cent service charge. Otherwise 10 per cent is customary. Nightlife Theater, circus, concert and variety performances are the main evening entertainments. Tickets are available in advance or from ticket booths immediately before performances. Visitors should note that prices for foreigners are usually much higher than those paid by Russian nationals. The repertoire of theaters provides a change of program almost nightly. In the course of one month, 30 different productions may be presented by the Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Company. Details of performances can be obtained on arrival. Visitors should apply to the service bureau of their hotel. All of these establishments are open 0600-2200.

Travelers are advised against all but essential travel to North Ossetia, Karachai-Cherkessia and Kabardino-Balkaria (including the Elbrus area). There is a high threat from terrorism in Russia, including suicide bombings in public places. Attacks have occurred most frequently in Moscow and in the North Caucasus. Banking hours

Currency exchange

Foreign currency should only be exchanged at official bureaux and authorized banks, and all transactions must be recorded on the currency declaration form which is issued on arrival. It is wise to retain all exchange receipts. Bureaux de change are numerous and easy to locate. Large shops and hotels offer their own exchange facilities. US Dollars in pristine condition are the easiest currency to exchange. It is illegal to settle accounts in hard currency and to change money unofficially.

Major European and international credit and debit cards, including Visa and Mastercard, are accepted in the larger hotels and at foreign currency shops and restaurants, but cash (in Roubles) is preferred. • Recent Disease Outbreaks
  • Hospital Database

Dental care

Avoid dental treatment as the standards of care and hygiene cannot be guaranteed.

Medication Availability

Little international brand medication is available outside of Moscow or St Petersburg. If medication is required in these cities use the larger, reputable pharmacies where you are less likely to find counterfeits

Blood supplies

Screening is inconsistent in Russia, therefore blood supplies should be considered as unsafe

Medical facilities

Medical care is usually far below Western standards, with severe shortages of basic medical supplies. Access to the few quality facilities that exist in major cities usually requires cash payment at Western rates upon admission.

General caution

Recent medical and dental exams should ensure that the traveler is in good health. Carry appropriate health and accident insurance documents and copies of any important medical records. Bring an adequate supply of all prescription and other medications as well as any necessary personal hygiene items, including a spare pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses if necessary. Drink only bottled beverages (including water) or beverages made with boiled water. Do not use ice cubes or eat raw seafood or rare meat. Eat well-cooked foods while they are still hot and fruits that can be peeled without contamination. Avoid roadside stands and street vendors. Only pasteurized dairy products should be consumed.

Specific concerns

Press reports indicate increased incidences of diphtheria and other communicable diseases, and CDC reports a severe shortage of vaccines to combat these diseases. Health officials state the situation is particularly bad in the cities of St. Petersburg, Moscow, Krasnodar and Vladivostok, as well as in the Far East, including Primorsky, Maritime and Saratov regions. Travelers to Russia should be up-to-date on routine and recommended immunizations and are reminded to strictly follow food and beverage precautions. AIDS occurs. Blood supply may not be adequately screened and/or single-use, disposable needles and syringes may be unavailable. When possible, travelers should defer medical treatment until reaching a facility where safety can be assured. According to CDC, breakdowns in water purification plants have led to significantly higher rates of gastroenteritis, hepatitis A and bacterial dysentery. Also, a report from the country's Environment Ministry states that half of the country's population must rely on substandard drinking water. The intestinal parasite Giardia lamblia has been linked to St. Petersburg's water supply - which should be considered contaminated under all circumstances. Hikers should take protective measures against ticks.

Immunization

Hepatitis A: Consider active immunization with hepatitis A vaccine or passive immunization with immune globulin (IG) for all susceptible travelers. Especially consider choosing active immunization for persons planning to reside for a long period or for persons who take frequent short-term trips to risk areas. The importance of protection against hepatitis A increases as length of stay increases. It is particularly important for persons who will be living in or visiting rural areas, eating or drinking in settings of poor or uncertain sanitation, or who will have close contact with local persons (especially young children) in settings with poor sanitary conditions. Hepatitis B: Vaccination is advised for health care workers, persons anticipating direct contact with blood from or sexual contact with inhabitants, and persons planning extended stays of 6 months or greater (especially those who anticipate using local health care facilities, staying in rural areas, or having intimate contact with the local population). Japanese Encephalitis: Consider vaccination if staying a month or more in the far eastern maritime areas south of Khabarovsk from July to September, especially if travel includes rural areas. Also consider if staying less than 30 days during that period and at high risk (in case of epidemic outbreak or extensive outdoor exposure in rural areas). Polio: A one-time booster dose is recommended for travelers who have previously completed a standard course of polio immunization. Refer to CDC guidelines for vaccinating unimmunized or incompletely immunized persons. Pregnancy is a relative contraindication to vaccination; however, if protection is needed, either IPV or OPV may be used, depending on preference and time available. Typhoid: Vaccination should be considered for persons staying longer than 3 weeks, adventurous eaters, and those who will venture off the usual tourist routes into small cities, villages and rural areas. Importance of vaccination increases as access to reasonable medical care becomes limited. Contraindications depend on vaccine type. Note: All routine vaccines (such as DTP or Td, Hib, MMR, polio, varicella, influenza and pneumococcal) should be kept up-to-date as a matter of good health practice unrelated to travel.

Disease risk summary

Health conditions and sanitation in Moscow and other large cities, formerly on par with U.S. and European standards, have deteriorated in recent years. Conditions in smaller cities and villages are below the standards of industrialized countries. Insect-borne illness: Encephalitis (Japanese type) - occurs in southeast (human cases reported in recent past for first time in 30 years) Encephalitis (tick-borne) - occurs in southern Siberia and forested areas bordering southeastern Europe Hemorrhagic fever - occurs in southern Siberia Leishmaniasis (cutaneous) - occurs in southern areas Lyme disease - occurs Typhus (tick-borne) - occurs in eastern and central Siberia Food-borne and water-borne illness: Cholera - occurs Diphyllobothriasis (fish tapeworm) may be a problem in the Baltic Sea area Giardiasis - occurs in western areas Other hazards: Diseases such as measles and diphtheria are commonly reported, and cases of polio still occur regularly. According to the CDC, a decrease in immunization practices since the late 1980s has led to significantly higher rates of several diseases, including diphtheria. While proof of diphtheria immunity is not required for international travel, the CDC recommends that travelers to areas where diphtheria is occurring should be immunized. Influenza risk extends from November to April. Rabies - occurs (especially among foxes in rural areas)

Entry requirements

AIDS: According to the Department of State and the Russian Consulate General in New York, a certificate showing an HIV negative status is required for any person applying for a visa for a stay of more than 3 months. The certificate must contain the applicant's passport data, proposed length of stay in Russia, blood test results for HIV infection, including date of the test, signature of the doctor conducting the test, medical examination results, diagnostic series, and seal of the hospital or medical organization. The certificate must be in both Russian and English and valid for 3 months from the date of medical examination and blood test. Foreign test results are accepted under certain conditions. Contact Russia's embassy for details. Diphtheria: A number of travelers to Russia have recently been informed that diphtheria vaccination is necessary for entering Moscow. Per Mr. Goryachev in the Russia Consulate in New York, an up-to-date diphtheria vaccination is recommended, although not required. Mr. Goryachev also provided the following toll-free number (from the U.S.) for an automated fax service regarding current visa requirements: (800) 634-4296. Callers must use a touch-tone phone to type in their own fax machine number.

Over recent years, the Kremlin has secured greater control over Russia's media. Press: The main dailies in the Russian Federation are Izvestiya (website: www.izvestia.ru) and Komsomolskaya Pravda (website: www.kp.ru), both published in Moscow. Newspapers and magazines are published in some 25 languages. Multilingual editions of the Moscow News (website: www.english.mn.ru) are available weekly.
