Golden Triangle Tour with Shimla (Toy Train Ride)

We covered a lot of grounds in the 7-day tour with WTX. The WTX staff (particularly the driver from New Delhi) provides excellent services with transfer to and from the New Delhi Airport, and New Delhi/Shimla Train Station. A big "Thank You" to Mr. Prakash on his quick action in solving our accommodation problem at Shimla. It was my first holiday to India and my friend's 4th time to India, we both enjoyed our the tour and most grateful at WTX's services.

Mesmerizing Shimla, Manali & Chandigarh from Delhi - 07 Days Tour

Mesmerizing Shimla, Manali & Chandigarh from Delhi - 07 Days

I can personally vouch for Memorable India. My son and his new bride took such a marvelous honeymoon trip to the Himalayas with them last year that they were still talking about it at Thanksgiving! They said all of their accommodations were first rate, they enjoyed the tour itself since it was well-planned and they simply couldn't believe how cheap it was—even the local tour guides spoke excellent english and were very generous with their time. I would highly recommend them for any kind of trip, no matter where in the world you may be traveling to.

Golden Triangle Tour with Shimla (Toy Train Ride) Tour

I recently completed the Golden Triangle Tour with Shimla (Toy Train Ride), and it was an absolutely incredible experience. The tour was incredibly well-organized and well-planned, and I was able to see some of the most beautiful cities in India during my journey. I especially enjoyed the toy train ride from Kalka to Shimla. The scenery was breathtaking and the experience of riding a toy train was so unique and memorable. The service provided by the tour company was also excellent, with the guide being very knowledgeable and helpful. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a unique and memorable experience in India.

Shimla Tour Packages

Shimla heritage walk.

Shimla is a heritage city and had been the British's favourite destination to spend the summer. And so, you can find a lot of British touch to everything here; from the buildings to the overall construction of the city, to even the food. The most popular heritage building here being the Viceregal Lodge, also known as the Rashtrapati Niwas was the residence of the Viceroy of India, during the British rule. The Shimla Heritage Museum is also an attraction for tourists looking for all historical insight into the city and the state of Himachal in general. The Heritage Walk will make you see the British architecture that had a strong Scottish influence, definitely visible at the Church on the Mall Road. Also, a walk through the ridge will make you see the beauty of the hills!

Shimla’s Religious Trail

Shimla is home to many temples and holy shrines. The most famous is the Jakhu temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, located on the top of the hill by the same name. The statue overlooks the Mall Road and can be seen from many parts of the city. A little farther from the city of Shimla, right on the outskirts is the Tara Devi temple. Legend has it that Goddess Tara Devi watches over the whole town and has a protective gaze, with the statement location of the temple on top of a hill.  Shimla also happens to have its own Kali Bari! With the Kali Bari being older than 150 years, this abode of Goddess Kali is a popular tourist attraction and a spiritual hub both for locals and travellers. The oldest temple in the city remains the Laxminarayan Temple. It is dedicated to Maa Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and is flocked by lakhs of people every year.

Places to Visit in Shimla

Visceral Lodge: It is a perfect place for history lovers. Built in 1888, this six story building constructed in Scottish Baronial style once served as the residence of Lord Dufferin, the British Viceroy of India. Jakhoo Temple: The Jakhu Temple is an ancient site dedicated to the Hindu god - Hanuman. It has the world's largest Hanuman statue, which is visible from most parts of Shimla. It is believed that Lord Hanuman stopped at this spot to take some rest before resuming his search for the Sanjeevani Booti to revive Lord Lakshman. Mall Road: Shopping in Shimla revolves around the heart of the town- The Mall Road. One can shop for local handicrafts, shawls, woolens, exquisite jewelry etc. here. The stores that are located on the Mall Road are famous for their woollen clothes and exclusively handcrafted works, apart from the usual books and jewellery. Christ Church: Located at the Mall Road itself, this church is the second oldest church in North India. The interiors and the neo-gothic architecture are very beautiful and appealing. At night, the church literally glows when it is lighted up, while in winters, it dons the look of a magnificent castle.  The Ridge: The Ridge is the most photographed wide-open street located on the side of Shimla Mall Road. The Ridge has everything, from shops selling some exclusive artefacts to the spectacular view of the snow-capped mountain ranges. It is famous for a lot of things, but best known for shopping and for being the social hub of the city.  Scandal Point: The Scandal Point is located on the Mall Road. It owes its interesting name to the fact that the King of Patiala abducted the daughter of the Viceroy, because he fell in love with her, from this very place. This point is a mountain lover's haven because it enjoys a picturesque and unobstructed view of gigantic mountains covered in a blanket of dense fir and spruce. Green Valley: The Green Valley is a beautiful and breathtaking mountain range that falls on the way to Kufri from Shimla. The Green Valley is surrounded by verdant hills on all sides covered with thick pine and deodar forests. It is not uncommon to sight some Yaks wandering and grazing around in the valley.  Himachal State Museum: The Himachal State Museum is located on the Mall Road and has unique collectibles like ancient coins, paintings and other handicraft items, the aesthetics of which are influenced by the Pahari form of art. Kalibari Temple: Kalibari Temple is an ancient place of worship dedicated to Goddess Kali. The shrine houses a captivating idol of Goddess Kali beautifully adorned with jewellery and colourful flowers. Kufri: Kufri, located at a distance of 20km from the main city of Shimla, is a popular tourist destination known for its skii slopes, Kufri Zoo and as starting point of treks. Mahasu Peak and Fagu Valley are the main attractions in Kufri that are accessible via pony ride.  Chail: Chail is a quiet hill station close (44km) to Shimla, known for the world's highest cricket ground and a heritage hotel, Chail Palace. Chail also offers various trekking and camping options for adventure enthusiasts. Tourists typically cover Shimla, Kufri and Chail in the same trip and many  Shimla packages also offer the same. Manali: One of the most popular hill stations in Himachal, Manali offers the most magnificent views of the Pir Panjal and the Dhauladhar ranges covered with snow for most parts of the year. Manali is often visited along with Shimla and Manali Shimla packages often cover tourist attractions like Hadimba Temple, Solang Valley, Rohtang Pass, Manikaran, Atal Tunnel and many more such places.

Things to Do in Shimla

Skii in Kufri: Kufri, the winter sports capital of Shimla is a skier's paradise. It is among the oldest places in India to be associated with Skiing. The best time to roll into the snow of Kufri is from mid- December to early February.  Ride the Kalka Shimla Toy Train: The Kalka to Shimla route is best travelled by way of the toy train that runs on a narrow-gauge track and is known for its dramatic views of the hills and surrounding villages. The historic Kalka Shimla Toy train is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and takes individuals on a 5 and a half hours ride amongst vast green hills and deodar and pine forests.  Horse Riding: Horse riding is a popular and much loved activity in both Shimla and Kufri. In Shimla, Horse Riding Options are generally available at the Ridge, while in Kufri one can ride through apple orchards and all the way to the Kufri Zoo. A lot of times, horses tend to be the only means to reach someplace in Kufri. Ice Skating: Ice Skating is a famous sport in the beautiful city of Shimla. The Shimla Ice Skating Rink is well-known because it is a naturally formed rink found in the town and is also the largest and the only naturally formed rink found in South Asia. 3 Days in Shimla – The Perfect Itinerary for First Timers

Photo of Upasna Verma

Shimla or Simla , the capital of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, is one of the most popular hill-stations in India and has been since the time of the Raj. They even declared it the summer capital of British India as early as in 1864, and part of me is quite ashamed it took me 27 years to visit.

A birds-eye view over Shimla

If you’re a first-time visitor to Shimla, like I was, follow this great itinerary and you won’t be disappointed.

The Morning

Getting to Shimla is fairly simple. You could take the Shatabdi Express from the New Delhi Railway Station that will get you to the town of Kalka in around four hours. From there, try taking the Kalka-Shimla Railway, which is one of the Mountain Railways of India that enjoys UNESCO World Heritage status and is said to be a gorgeous journey. Alternatively, you could hire a Taxi from the Kalka station that will get you to Shimla in another two to three hours. You also always have the option of driving down from Delhi yourself, but we all know how unreliable traffic usually is on Indian Highways, so do keep in mind that this could take you upwards of ten hours.

Must Read: the ridge shimla

If you’re planning your trip from other parts of the country / world, fly to Delhi and then follow the route above, or fly into Chandigarh , 110 Kms away from Shimla and take a cab that will get you there in four or five hours.

The Afternoon

If you’re taking the Heritage Mountain Train from Kalka to Shimla, your lunch will probably be on-board and en-route. But if you’re on the road, whether you chose to drive from Delhi, or get to Kalka / Chandigarh and then take a cab, kick off your weekend getaway in true Indian style by stopping for lunch at a dhaba along the way. Dharampur , just 65 kms away from Shimla, is a popular choice with travelers, and there are a number of restaurants / dhabas you could choose from.

Butter Chicken and Butter Naan… The best way to kick-start any Indian holiday

The Evening

Once you have reached Shimla and settled in to your hotels, don’t waste another minute and head straight to The Mall. The Mall is the main street in Shimla, and is lined with shops and restaurants. Cars are not allowed on to The Mall beyond a certain point, making this an ideal place to stroll around and soak in the relaxed atmosphere. Walk around, linger a while, and enjoy the wonderful old-world charm that this sleepy hill-station has managed to retain despite all the commercialization.

Soak up the atmosphere at The Mall

Enjoy the wonderful old-world charm at the iconic Town Hall, and the Gothic building of the Gaiety Theater

Located at the far end of The Mall, is the Oberoi Clarkes Hotel, a heritage property with a quaint appeal. Pop into their welcoming bar for a drink. While they don’t have an open terrace, the glass façade makes for a great place to enjoy the views of the sunset.

Sunsets and Beer <3Feel free to grab a bite to eat as well, but don’t forget to stop at Embassy Restaurant on your way back, just a few minutes from the hotel, for dessert. There’s something about slurping an ice cream in nippy weather, and Embassy sure knows that. You’ll always find a crowd here, taking their pick from the myriad flavours on offer.

Wrap up Day 1 with Ice Cream from Embassy

If you’re lucky, and if you’ve booked way in advance (as these are much in demand), you might get to go on a Heritage Walk of Shimla with Raaja Bhasin. A local historian and an author of five critically acclaimed books, including Simla – The Summer Capital of British India, Raaja Bhasin conducts fascinating and intriguing walks around town. There wasn’t a single dull moment on our two-hour walk with Raaja, and the insights into Shimla’s history, architecture, people and places were priceless.

On a Heritage Walk with Raaja Bhasin

He is such a treasure trove of information and anecdotes; he even threw in gyaan on the local flora and fauna.

Highly recommended. For more information, check out – www.raajabhasin.com

The Walk will end at The Mall itself, so you could pop into any of the restaurants around for a quick bite. There are options for Pizza, for Chinese, for Indian. You’ll even find a Café Coffee Day if you’re not in the mood to experiment. The Fish and Chips at the Combemere Hotel come highly recommended. Extremely popular, though I can’t seem to understand why, is Indian Coffee House. An old establishment and an institution of sorts, the place is always packed and getting a table immediately is next to impossible. But the ambience is next to impossible as well. Dark and dingy, with frayed upholstery and an ageing clientele, I personally did not want to even linger long enough to be seated.

Stroll around The Mall some more, you’ll definitely find something that will catch your fancy. Or go to Lakkar Bazaar (Wooden market), just a little further down the Mall Road, for odd knick-knacks and wooden souvenirs. As another option, you could make your way to Jakhoo Hill, the highest point in Shimla for some stunning panoramic views; or take an excursion to Chadwick Falls, seven kilometers away. But for a truly wonderful evening, make your way to Wildflower Hall (unless of course you are staying there). Formerly the residence of Lord Kitchener , Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, Wildflower Hall is now a luxury hotel that is run by the Oberoi Group. The original building burnt down in a fire in 1993, but the new building constructed and restored by the Oberoi Group, is gorgeous. There’s a spa, Jacuzzi and heated swimming pool to pamper yourself with, and stunning views of the Himalayas from the restaurants.

Pick up souvenirs from Lakkar BazaarDAY 3

After a leisurely breakfast, make your way to the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, for a glimpse of one of British India’s most stunning creations. The Viceregal Lodge, also known as Rashtrapati Niwas, has been the official summer residence of the President of India ever since Independence, and was officially handed over to the Indian Institute of Advanced Study in 1965.

The Viceregal Lodge

The construction of this Elizabethan building, designed by Henry Erwin, was completed in 1888 and the then Viceroy, the Earl of Dufferin was the first resident. Today you can find many articles and photographs from the times of the British Raj here. This is where the historic Simla Conference in 1945 took place btw. The building is magnificent; but even more beautiful is the lush green lawns and wooded estate that the lodge is housed in. Check before you visit, there are guided-tours conducted daily at fixed times, covering some basic history about the building.

A comfortable twenty or thirty minute walk from the Viceregal Lodge is the Oberoi Cecil Hotel, an elegant property reminiscent of the Colonial era. A heritage hotel that is over a 100 years old, it’s a great place to stop by for lunch. The Restaurant has both European and Asian options, and Cedar Garden is the outdoor restaurant offering a light menu but only up to 3 pm. The Lounge is smack in the middle of the hotel, in the 5-storey atrium lobby, which also has a bar. The Pizza is quite good.

Nothing is complete without Pizza

Pack your bags, and begin your journey back. But not before planning your return. There’s still so much left to see and do, and let’s face it, Shimla has surely charmed you.

Shimla Manali Trip Itinerary – How to Plan Your Journey

shimla manali trip itinerary

Continuing from the previous two articles where I talked about how you can plan a trip to Shimla and Manali separately; in this article, I will talk about a Shimla Manali Trip Itinerary covering both the places in the same trip. I will first draft an itinerary that I recommend, followed by a few other variations. If you wanted to draft your own plan and had questions, you may ask them in the comments section towards the end of this page.

Together, Shimla and Manali are probably the most visited towns in all of Himachal and make up for a perfect family holiday. There are several reasons behind this, like safety and connectivity. But the biggest reason in my opinion is that Shimla and Manali have something to offer for everyone.

It does not matter if you are planning a quick outing with your friends or a proper vacation with your family; you know that heading towards either of these places will not end in disappointment. How can you plan your itinerary for Shimla and Manali is what I will be discussing in this article.

If you have about 7 to 8 days, you can easily explore both Shimla and Manali in a relaxed manner without rushing on any day. For the sake of this article, I will assume that you are traveling from Delhi. If you were however traveling from a different place, only the plan for first and last day will change. The rest of the itinerary will still remain the same.

Quick Navigation

Shimla Manali Trip Itinerary

I will suggest an itinerary according to 9 days of travel which will include two weekends and one entire week. It will be starting on a Saturday and ending on Sunday of the next week. If you were short on time then you can easily take days out from this itinerary.

  • Delhi to Shimla: Day 1
  • Sightseeing in Shimla: Day 2
  • Sightseeing in Shimla: Day 3
  • Shimla to Manali: Day 4
  • Manali: Day 5
  • Manali to Keylong: Day 6
  • Keylong to Manali: Day 7
  • Manali: Day 8
  • Manali to Delhi: Day 9

A more detailed explanation of this itinerary is as mentioned below where I have explained what all places you can cover during your stay in Shimla and Manali.

I have kept only 2 days of stay in Shimla because, in my opinion, that is sufficient to cover the major tourist attractions here. Manali has slightly more to offer to tourists than Shimla does.

The plan above can be completed by both a private vehicle and public transport. Traveling by your own vehicle of course will be better and more convenient.

shimla manali trip itinerary

  • Delhi to Shimla – Day 1

Not much to talk about on this day except for a long journey. From Delhi, take NH1 and then take the road towards Shimla from Chandigarh via Himalayan Expressway. There is currently some road widening work going on between Chandigarh and Shimla so the entire journey can easily take up to 10-11 hours.

The total distance covered would be about 350 kilometers. There are regular HRTC buses from ISBT Delhi which you can board if you were traveling by public transport.

Another fun thing to do would be to reach Kalka by Bus and then board the famous Toy train to reach Shimla. For more details, please read How to Plan a Trip by Shimla Kala Toy Train .

Shimla – Day 2

Now there are multiple ways that you can spend Day 2 and 3. There are several places to see in Shimla of which,  Mall Road, Christ Church, Scandal Point, Jakhu Hill, Shimla State Museum are the most famous ones. Some of the nearby hill stations that are very scenic are Chail , Kufri, Mashobra , and Narkanda . For a complete list, please take a look at Places of Tourist Interest in Shimla .

If you were traveling by your own vehicle, I would recommend spending Day 2 in Shimla itself.  You can take a walk on The Ridge, the area near Jhaku Hill, and the Observatory. This is the place where Shimla’s fairs, festivals, and functions are held. Tourists come here to see several colonial-style buildings, a church, a library, and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

You can also trek to Jhaku Hill, which at a height of 2,455 meters. It offers a mesmerizing view of Shimla and the entire Shivalik range around. It is a fun trek of about 30 minutes to the top through lush forest terrain. There is also a 108 feet tall statue of Lord Hanuman at top of Jhaku Hill.

shimla manali trip itinerary

Drive to Narkanda – Day 3

On Day 3, take a drive to the nearby town of Narkanda via Kufri. At Narkanda, drive all the way till Sutlej point and then have lunch there. After lunch, pay a short visit to Hatu Peak and then return to Shimla by evening. This entire drive is very scenic and definitely worth it. For more details, please take a look at What to See in Narkanda .

If you were traveling by public transport, my advice would be to spend these two days visiting places within Shimla city itself. Going to Narkanda by public transport and coming back to Shimla may be a bit of a hassle and to be honest, won’t be that much fun either.

Shimla to Manali – Day 4

Most of this day will be spent traveling from Manali to Shimla. You can take the route via Tattapani. The drive can be a bit long but is a scenic one and you will enjoy it.

Manali – Day 5

Spend this day in Manali itself. The first important thing you need to do is to get your permit for Rohtang Pass. This can take an entire day where you will first submit your documents in the first half of the day. You will then return to the DC office to collect the permit in the afternoon.

Another and easier way around this is to apply for the permit online. Please read How to get a Permit for Rohtang Pass for step by step details.

Apart from getting the permits, the rest of the day will be spent on local sightseeing and walking around in Manali. There are several places you can visit of which Hadimba Temple, Nehru Kund, Vashist Hot Water Springs, Museum Of Himachal Culture And Folk Art, Manu Maharishi Temple, Gauri Shankar Temple, Jagatipatt Temple, Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery are to name a few. For more details, please take a look at Places of Tourist Interest in Manali .

mall road manali

Manali to Keylong – Day 6

Today you will take the most scenic drive of your entire journey. Drive up to Rohtang Pass and then descend down on the other side into Lahaul valley. There are plenty of hotels in Keylong where you can spend the night. Or you can drive further 25 kilometers to Jispa and stay there at any of the campsites.

This part of the journey is highly recommended. People advising you for Manali will not add this to the itinerary but this actually is a must part of your trip. You will love the entire drive from Manali to Lahaul valley .

Keylong to Manali – Day 7

On this day, start early from Keylong and reach Jispa. Have breakfast there and from Jispa, climb up to see Baralacha La top , and drive all the way till Suraj Taal. From there, then backtrack to Jispa and Keylong and then return to Manali via Rohtang Pass.

Manali – Day 8

Last day of the trip before you return home to Delhi. There are 3 ways that you can spend this day. Either you can just relax in Manali and shop around a bit at Mall road. Or you can trek to Bhrigu Lake which a 6 kilometers hike from Gulaba. You can also plan a day visit to Gurudwara Manikaran Sahib.

An alternate way to plan this day is to go to Kasol in Parvati Valley and spend the day there.

Manali to Delhi – Day 9

Nothing to write about this day except that it will be a long journey home to Delhi via Chandigarh. Total distance covered will be about 550 kilometers so an early start from Manali is recommended.

Itinerary for Shimla and Manali

A few other ways that the journey can be planned are as mentioned below.

Itinerary 1

  • Shimla Local Sightseeing and Kufri – Day 2
  • Shimla to Manikaran to Manali – Day 3
  • Rohtang Pass – Day 4
  • Local Sightseeing in Manali – Day 5
  • Manali to Kullu to Delhi – Day 6

Itinerary 2

  • Local Sightseeing in Shimla – Day 2
  • Shimla to Narkana to Sarahan – Day 3
  • Sarahan to Kalpa – Day 4
  • Kalpa to Chitkul – Day 5
  • Chitkul to Shimla – Day 6
  • Shimla to Manali – Day 7
  • Manali Local Sightseeing – Day 8
  • Rohtang Pass – Day 9
  • Manali to Delhi – Day 10

Accommodation in Shimla and Manali

Shimla and Manali are very popular tourist destinations and always have people visiting here. Due to this, hotels in both these cities are ample in number in quite a wide range of budgets. You will easily be able to find cheap stays as well as luxurious hotels and resorts.

I personally do not prefer booking hotels in advance as I like to first arrive, check the place out and then negotiate an on the spot deal. It is however more of a personal choice. In peak tourist season, it is definitely an added benefit and peace of mind if you have your accommodation booked and confirmed.

Winter Trip to Shimla and Manali

If you were visiting Shimla and Manali in winter, you can still follow this itinerary with an exception of Lahaul valley. That part cannot be explored as Rohtang pass remains closed between November and April. In that case, you can use these two days to explore more areas like Manikaran Sahib or nearby places like Parvati Valley .

In peak winters, it can snow heavily at both Shimla and Manali in which case, I will recommend that you be careful while driving around. If possible, hire a local taxi here who can take you for sightseeing safely.

You will also have to be careful while packing clothes. Pack a few pairs of thermals and pack all your heavy woolens. Do keep in mind though that there is a huge tourist rush here around Christmas and new year.

snowfall in manali

Road Conditions in Shimla and Manali

The road between Delhi to Shimla and Manali to Delhi is a mix of good and average. There are some bad sections in between but it is mostly a smooth run.

So is the road at most of the other places with an exception of the stretch at Rohtang Pass. The road towards the top of the pass and then at some places towards Lahaul valley can get a little bad. In monsoon, there is also a lot of slushes here and if it rained too much it can also cause landslides in between.

Another bad section of the road is towards Manikaran Sahib. Between Shimla and Manali, the road via Tattapani is about average, a mix of good and bad. The annoying part of the journey will however be the long line of trucks traveling between Mandi and Chandigarh.

Clothes for Shimla and Manali

For a summer visit, your regular cotton clothes will do but you may want to pack a jacket as well if you kept Lahaul valley as part of your itinerary. During monsoon season, make sure you are carrying proper rain gear along with your cottons. For winter trips, your heavy woolens, thermals, gloves, and jackets are a must.

Shimla and Manali Trip

Final question is, why to visit Shimla and Manali at all. There are numerous other hill stations in Himachal and Uttarakhand that you can go to so why these two places? The answer to this question is actually in the form of three major reasons.

The first one is that both these places are very well connected to all nearby cities. Road connectivity remains open throughout the year and you can either drive on your own or catch an overnight bus.

The second reason is in terms of safety. When you are out vacationing with family, you cannot really afford to go completely remote; places where no one goes. You would rather visit destinations that are filled with tourists so you can have fun as well as peace of mind. Shimla and Manali both are perfect destinations in this aspect.

The third reason is of availability of facilities like accommodation, phone reception, data connectivity; public transport, taxis, eateries, etc, and both these places again come out as winners here as well.

Shimla Manali Trip Itinerary – Conclusion

I hope the information above was of help. If you have any other questions; or need any further details; please feel free to ask in the comments section below; or at our Community forum ; and I will be glad to answer. If you have visited Shimla and Manali and have a few other tips that can be added to the article above, please be so kind to mention it in comments and I will add to the post.

Both routes are scenic. Although the jalori pass will be closed if you have to go to tirthan valley in the winter from Shimla.

Now that you know how to reach Shimla by various means, let’s move on to check out the various places to cover in your Shimla sightseeing.

Places to visit in Shimla

Mall Road: Bustling with eating joints, colonial-era monuments and numerous shopping outlets, Mall road is Shimla's main (pedestrian-only) promenade. At one end of the road you will find the Lakkar Bazaar, known for shops selling handlooms and wooden handicrafts. There are many colonial buildings on Mall Road like Gaiety Theatre, Gorton Castle, etc. Since the Mall Road is a pedestrian area, cars can only go till the parking, from where visitors would need to either take the Lift (paid) or walk to Mall road. This is the main Shimla tourist spot to see and be seen at.

Viceregal Lodge:  For the history buffs and lovers of architecture, the Viceregal Lodge , also known as Rashtrapati Niwas, is a must-visit place in Shimla. Built in the Jacobethan style, this former summer residence of the British Viceroys located on the Observatory Hill presently houses the prestigious Indian Institute of Advanced Study. This is the historic building where various discussions related to India’s Partition and the future of India and Pakistan took place. Inside, visitors can see photographs and memorabilia from the British colonial era including the wooden table on which the revised maps of India and Pakistan were first drawn. The building features Belgian chandeliers, and walls and sweeping staircases made of Burmese teak.

Kufri: Located 16 kilometers ahead of Shimla, the slopes of Kufri are a hub for adventure lovers. A great place to unwind, Kufri offers panoramic views of the Himalayas. This tiny town offers a number of places of interest like the Himalayan Nature Park, Chini Bungalow, Kufri Fun World, etc. Mahasu Peak, the highest peak in Kufri, is yet another famous Shimla tourist spot. Tourists can reach Mahasu Peak either by trekking to it, or by hiring ponies.

Jakhu Temple: Settled at an altitude of 7,500 feet, Jakhu Temple is located on the tallest hill of Shimla, known as Jakhu Hill . The temple is known for its approximately 108 feet tall statue of Lord Hanuman which watches over the town. This temple is one of the most important places to visit in Shimla for many tourists. According to the legends, Lord Hanuman took a break at this location while travelling in search of the Sanjeevani Booti. From this temple, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Shivalik range.

Christ Church: Built in 1857, Christ Church in Shimla is the second oldest church in North India. The impressive church is located on the Ridge and is a popular Shimla tourist spot. The neo-Gothic architecture of this historic church with its stained-glass windows is worth seeing. The Pipe Organ in the church, built in the year 1899, is the biggest in the Indian Subcontinent. A visit to this church is an essential inclusion in your Shimla sightseeing plan.

Annandale Ground: Annandale, high up on the list of Shimla tourist places , was once used by the British for their leisure activities. It is famous for its serene atmosphere and pretty views. Here you will also find a Golf Club, a Cactus museum, a playground, and an Indian Army Museum. This is a popular picnic spot for tourists as well as locals. Explore the picturesque surroundings or play cricket, golf or polo to enjoy a break during your Shimla trip.

Gaiety Theatre: An architectural landmark on the Shimla Mall Road, Gaiety Theatre is one of the most historic of all the Shimla tourist places. Also known as the Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex, this 122-year-old Victorian theatre complex contains the oldest Gothic theatre in Asia. An awe-inspiring example of Victorian-era architecture, the theatre complex currently includes an art gallery, museum, multi-purpose hall and amphitheater in addition to the old theatre. The theatre hosts a number of cultural and performing arts programmes in Shimla. People often compare the facade of this theatre with that of London’s Albert Hall.

Scandal Point: Another Raj-era Shimla tourist spot, Scandal Point is said to mark the place from where the Maharaja of Patiala eloped with the daughter of British Viceroy, thereby creating a scandal. Located at the meeting point of the Ridge and the Mall, today this spot is marked by the statue of noted Indian freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai. Visitors today will remember the spot more for its beautiful view of the mountains.

Indira Tourist Park: Amidst snow-capped peaks near the famous Himalayan National Park, Indira Tourist Park (also known as Indira Bungalow) is named after the former Prime Minister of India who visited this place in 1972. The park features a video game parlour where kids can enjoy some fun games. Tourists can also enjoy a wide range of activities like a yak ride, pony ride, etc. in the park. This is a good place to come to if you are in Shimla with children.

Chadwick Falls: Chadwick Falls, located at an altitude of 1550m above sea level, is one of the most famous places to visit in Shimla. Located amidst steep misty hills covered with pine and deodar trees, Chadwick Falls are a mesmerizing sight to behold, especially during the monsoons when the cascading waterfall is nothing less than spectacular. Apart from this beautiful waterfall, tourists can also visit numerous shrines located nearby.

For buses to Naldehra or Kufri, board from the Lakkar Bazaar near Shimla’s ice-skating rink, though their frequency isn’t great compared to those within the city limits. It is, however, more advisable to hire a private taxi to get within the city unless it is not within walking distance. At least it gives you the flexibility to make stops along the way, enjoy the setting, take in mountain views and if needed stop at a cafe for some tea and Maggi. But for a cheaper all-round experience, public buses are a better bet considering you are travelling within Shimla. Q. Are there sufficient ATMs across Shimla? A. You will find ATMs by Co-operative Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, Central Bank of India, Canara Bank, State Bank of India, UCO Bank, Union Bank of India, and Punjab National Bank to name a few.
