Is the Amsterdam Cruise Port CLOSED?

The city of Amsterdam has announced its intention to close the Cruise Passenger Terminal Amsterdam . This has been a discussion for several years. Decisions like this in Amsterdam usually take multiple years to implement, so if you have a cruise scheduled with Amsterdam as a port of call or departure/arrival port through 2024, don’t worry! It’s not likely any changes will happen before then.

When will The Amsterdam Passenger Terminal be closing?

There has been no definitive date on which closing the cruise port will actually be put into effect. It simply has passed the city government votes, so there is a lot of time before this ever happens. Maybe even years!

Our information is from first-hand experiences, even better, we lived near the Amsterdam cruise port & Passenger Cruise Terminal for quite some time, so we are familiar with nearly every aspect of the area.

We hope to help anyone who’s arriving in Amsterdam for a cruise, especially our fellow Americans who may not be familiar with public transportation, hotels, and things to do in Amsterdam. But even if you’re not arriving by cruise ship, we have some useful information that any traveler could benefit from!

Practical Information – Arriving or Departing the Amsterdam Cruise Port Terminal? 

The Amsterdam cruise port is just outside of the city center and the entire area is very safe with plenty of things to do.

When you exit the ship, everything is so close and nearly all attractions and points of interest are walkable from the cruise port! For people with reduced mobility or travelers not interested in walking as much, the tram system has stops within steps of the cruise port terminal.

While the city is exciting and vibrant, there are active pickpockets in the highly touristed areas (Central Station, Red Light, and some museums). Everyone will warn travelers of pickpockets, but with some common sense, you don’t have to worry. Just keep belongings close, put wallets and money in front pockets (as well as cell phones), and don’t wander around with a large backpack. Choose a smaller excursion bag for essentials. They are easier to manage and can be worn across the front in really busy situations. Additionally, you won’t stick out as a tourist as much 🙂

The reality is, even after living in Amsterdam in the most touristed area, I’ve never been a victim nor have I even witnessed a pickpocket situation (Or even KNOWN anyone that has). It’s a thing, yes, but not worth being paranoid over. Just use common sense.

Where do cruise ships dock in Amsterdam?

The address to the Amsterdam cruise port for large ships is : Piet Heinkade 27, 1019 BR Amsterdam, Netherlands

It’s simply referred to as the   Passenger Terminal Amsterdam  or  Cruise Port Amsterdam  on most maps and websites.

There are two locations for cruises, there is the large terminal which accommodates traditional large cruise ships, and the dockside area which accommodates most river cruises.

IJmuiden is NOT Amsterdam Cruise Port!

If you see that your cruise is going to dock in IJmuiden, THIS IS NOT AMSTERDAM. Amsterdam and Ijmuiden are completely different ports and nowhere near each other. Also, some cruise companies like MSC like to call Rotterdam, “Amsterdam” or vice-versa. So be sure you understand where they are going to dock. We will cover IJmuiden & Rotterdam separately.

What are the nearest attractions to the Amsterdam Cruise Port?

The city of Amsterdam is so small and any attraction that is worth seeing can be reached by foot in under an hour or by tram in just minutes. But if you’re looking to stay close to the port, there are the best things to do near the passenger terminal! 

• NEMO Science Museum – great for adults and children alike. Just a few minutes walk from the cruise port.
• Red Light District – Have a wander around the famous Red Light District which is a few minutes walk from the cruise passenger terminal Amsterdam. Wander the area yourself or hire a tour guide through the Red Light District. Having lived in the Red Light, having a tour guide is the best way to make the most out of your visit!
• A wander through Centraal Station – This beautiful station is more than just another train station, it has restaurants, bars, and shops.  The station is only a 10-minute walk +/-
• Canal Cruise – there are literally hundreds of canal cruise options and many depart from near the cruise port. Our favorites are the smaller open-top canal boats for the most authentic experience.

• Food Tours – There is no better way to discover local culture than a guided food tour. Learn about Dutch cheeses, chocolate, and the daily staples of the locals. Book a guided food tour of Amsterdam

Getting to and from the cruise terminal in Amsterdam is straightforward and relatively simple. Here is some helpful information and frequently asked questions about travel between the cruise ship port and major points of interest.

How far is the cruise Passenger Terminal Amsterdam from the city center?

The Amsterdam cruise port is almost in the city center! You can literally walk off the ship and be to some of the main attractions and vibrant city center within minutes. Our handy map will show you where the main attractions are as you leave the cruise ship. 

How much is a taxi from Amsterdam cruise port to the city center?

Cabs are quite expensive in Amsterdam with a basic starting fee of over €3  and a separate rate per kilometer that is over €2. So a simple ride down the street will likely cost close to €7 or $8 when a tram would be less than €1. It’s not common to use a taxi to get around in Amsterdam due to the ease of public transportation and close proximity to everything (it’s really a small city!). However, people with mobility issues may prefer to use a taxi or Uber. (Uber is generally a little less expensive than a taxi)

How far is it from the cruise ship port in Amsterdam to Schiphol airport?

By train to or from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, it’s about 25 minutes, to the port, and by car, it’s about 30 minutes depending on traffic. The train is the easiest and least complicated way to get to the center of the city where the cruise port is a short walk.

How do I get from the cruise port to the airport in Amsterdam?

The three most popular ways to get to the airport from the Amsterdam cruise port are using the train, a private transfer by the cruise line (bus), or by taxi.

The most popular option is the train system, which is inexpensive, fast, and gets you from Amsterdam Central Station to the airport in under 30 minutes.  The price for a train ticket varies depending on the time of day but the basic fare starts at about 6 euro. Alternatively, you can use a transportation pass if you’re going to explore before going to the airport (See pass options). 

Otherwise, taxis and private cars are usually available for around €40-€60 depending on the company. Book a private car with a reputable company

How much is a taxi from Amsterdam cruise port to Schiphol Airport?

Uber is widely used as are other taxi & car services which are easily available from the airport and cruise terminal.  What’s the price to get between Schipol Airport and the Amsterdam Cruise Terminal?  Expect to spend €40-€60 or more depending on the time of day. For larger groups, it’s better to hire a private transfer service, as taxis can be too small to accommodate more than 2 people with luggage. Private transfers aren’t cheap but they’re the least stressful and most direct way to get from the cruise passenger terminal to the airport.

The cruise lines always provide transportation as well and for people looking to get off the ship and go straight to the airport, this is usually the best option and probably the most expensive as they’ll often include an excursion on the way to the airport.

How far is the Amsterdam cruise port terminal from the train station?

Since Amsterdam is so small, you’ll be thrilled to know you can walk to Central Station (Amsterdam Centraal)! The train station is only 1km (a little over half a mile) and about an 18-minute leisurely walk. 

Can you walk to and from the Amsterdam cruise port?

Depending on where you are staying or how you arrive, getting to the cruise terminal by foot is simple. It’s about a 15-minute walk from Centraal Station and less than 20 minutes from the city center. If you’re carrying a lot of luggage and staying in Amsterdam before or after a cruise, it’s probably best to get a cab. It’s worth noting that the tram system is extensive in Amsterdam and trams are available close to where passengers leave the ship and will get you into the city center in minutes.

During World War II, Amsterdam faced tragedy as Jewish citizens were deported and sent to occupation camps all over Europe, sparking the citys efforts to memorialize and honor those who were lost, which resulted in the founding of the the National Monument and the Anne Frank House. Today, Amsterdam is known as a cultural heart of Europe, home to a variety of art museums and cultural institutions. In 2015, we traveled 820 miles down the Rhine River on an eight-day Viking River Cruise from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Basel, Switzerland. It was one of the best trips weve ever takenand we dont say that lightly, having logged more than 2 million flight miles across the world! The experience was simply outstanding, from start to finish. We enjoyed delicious, exceedingly fresh food fine wines tailored itineraries breathtaking scenery excellent customer service and modern, clean rooms. Dr. Gary Raymond, a friend who took the identical Viking riverboat cruise weeks before, echoed his satisfaction with the trip, commenting that out of 18 cruises he has been on, this was one of the best! He noted, Everyone from the captain down was open to taking care of any problem you could come up with.

Viking is one of several major cruise lines, including AmaWaterways, Uniworld, Avalon Waterways, and Tauck, to run river cruises in a variety of countries. Taking a Viking cruise is a very different experience than being on one of the large cruise ships, however. Having only 190 passengers on board promoted a unique and relaxing atmosphere. There were a few teenagers, but most of the passengers were 50 or older. We did not see any children or loud, wild groups, as one would experience on the larger cruise ships, which carry thousands of passengers!

How To Get Into The City From The Airport

If you arrive the day of your cruise, Viking will meet you at the airport and bring you to the ship. However, if you arrive earlier you will need to make your own transportation arrangements.

Start Of A Viking Cruise In Budapest

I journaled our entire 15-day cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. It was fun to record what a European river cruise is really like, the good, the bad and you know the rest. Youll find some travel tips along the way to make your own experience easier.

Check in day. This afternoon marked the start of our 15 day Grand European Tour from Budapest to Amsterdam. Our river cruise adventure would begin on the docks in Budapest.

While other passengers were stressing over flights and airport transfers, we were already in town. We arrived early for a number of reasons:

• Flight delays happen. Few things could be worse than missing the boat. What a nightmare that would be!
• We wanted to explore Budapest on our own. We took the opportunity to enjoy the citys famous thermal baths, as well as see all of Budapests top sights.
• We could sleep late, have a late breakfast, and walk to the ship at our leisure.
• We could get over any jet lag before the cruise.

Hotels Near Passenger Terminal Amsterdam

The most convenient hotel as mentioned is the Mövenpick hotel , which is literally nextdoor and well rated by travellers. Other good hotels in the area around Central Station include the art-deco Grand Amrath and the modern DoubleTree by Hilton .

Day : Cologne Germany

During the Holy Roman Empire, Cologne was the largest medieval town in Europe. Naturally, its Gothic cathedral is the hallmark draw!

The nice thing about this stop is the ship can dock right into town, so you can join the tour or explore on your own.

We explored the Kölner Doms interior and were suitably awed.

If you want a great view, Viking offers an optional tour that takes you all the way to the very top! I had already been to Cologne on a previous trip so instead, we opted for a palace excursion.

I *love* an over the top, beautifully decorated mansion and have a whole series dedicated to them here .

We visited Augustusburg Castle, one of two gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage site classified as Bruhl Palaces.

The castle was once home to the prince-archbishops of Cologne and is decked out in gold, marble and all-around extravagance. I particularly liked the massive entryway staircase which was gilded and made my mouth drop open when we turned the corner.

Highly recommend this day trip if you love castles half as much as I do!

The interiors were really unique and the guided tour was excellent.

After the main palace, we did a quick tour of the hunting lodge as well, which was just as stunning. This is one stop I definitely wished we had more time in!

Danube Cruise Day 1 In Budapest

I dont know who was more excited about our upcoming adventure, Dan or me. Either way, we both woke up early on the day of the cruise, even though Saturday is our weekly down day.

The official check-in time for a Viking River Cruise is 3:00 p.m., so we requested the latest hotel check out time possible. We took our sweet time that morning, savoring the hotels delicious breakfast buffet and scenic view for as long as we could.

Finally, we could delay it no longer.

Despite the official check-in time, Viking accommodates early arrivals, knowing flights arrive at all hours of the day. Having nowhere else to go with luggage in tow, we rolled our carry-ons down the sidewalk to the ship that would be our home for the next two weeks.

First Evening On Our Viking Cruise

Before dinner, people gathered in the Lounge to introduce themselves and meet Dewi, Bragis delightful Program Director. She was there to give a Welcome Briefing. Shes Dutch and her name is pronounced Davey. Its the Indonesian version of the Hindu devi, meaning goddess. What a conversation starter!

TIP: Head to the lounge if you want to meet other passengers. The Sun Deck and the Aquavit Terrace are also good, but those are more weather dependent.

Dewi gave us an outline of what to expect on our cruise, and told us about optional tours we could take in the next few days. We also got a heads-up that Viking would ask for our feedback at the end of the cruise.

After the briefing, we met our Cabin Steward. Florin is a friendly Romanian chap. He asked us if we had everything we needed and requested that we please let him know if we needed anything else.

Taking advantage of his offer, I asked him for a couple of bathrobes. He offered to bring slippers as well. Well, slippers hadnt occurred to me but, Yes, that would be nice. And do you have any firmer pillows? The ones on our beds were way too soft, not to mention small.

If My Embarkation Pier Is Outside Of Town How Do I Get There What About Debarkation

Some river cruises, such as Tauck, Scenic, Emerald and Uniworld, include airport transfers in their fare. For others, such as Viking, Vantage and Grand Circle, free transfers are only offered to passengers who book a pre-cruise stay or buy their airfare through the company these lines all allow you to buy a transfer for a reasonable fee.

If you’ve bought your flights independently, you’ll want to check your cruise documents and see where the cruise pier is, then take a taxi or public transportation to the dock. Most European river cruise ships ask you to board sometime between noon and 4 p.m.

On the way home, you should arrange a transfer to the airport with the ship’s concierge, if you haven’t purchased it already, or arrange one independently.

If your river cruise includes a land tour portion — as you’ll find on more exotic itineraries such as the Yangtze in China, the Mekong in Vietnam, various rivers in Russia and the Nile in Egypt — you’ll probably meet up with the group at either the airport or the designated hotel.

Things To Do In Amsterdam

The great thing about Amsterdam Cruise Port is that you only have to step off the cruise ship and you are right in the beating heart of the city centre. Consider renting a bicycle at Yellow Bike just a 20-minute walk from the passenger terminal to be prepared for an authentic Dutch day and night out. From the Yellow Bike rental, its an easy ride into the Red Light District, where you will find myriad attractions, including the neon-lit windows for which Amsterdam is so famous.

Shopping In A Budapest Grocery

After settling the bill, we sauntered to a grocery store we had passed earlier.

We like to look around food stores because you get a good idea of what the locals prefer to eat and prices of their foods. Some of the produce and meats are different, too.

Yes, my friends, we consider that fun . And you know what? We discovered that Budapests food is super cheap!

The market was doing a brisk business as we entered.

Viking allows passengers to bring wine on board to enjoy, and we decided to pick up a bottle as wine is readily available in shops. Th is store had quite a nice wine department, but you should have seen us attempting to decipher the grapes and varieties!

Dan really enjoys recreating our favorite foreign dishes for our friends at home. So, while he was distracted with the wine options, I sneaked off to another aisle. I secretly wanted to pick up a packet or two of Hungarian paprika as a little surprise souvenir.

Outdoor Or Indoor Options

If you like to socialize and want a formal 3-course menu dinner, try the formal dining room on the main floor.

If you want more relaxed, casual food with perhaps a table for just 2, the Aquavit upstairs is a great alternative. We had lunch a couple times there and its quite nice to see the river views and sit outside.

Where Does Viking River Cruises Dock

We are taking a Viking River Cruise from Amsterdam. Can anyone tell me where the boat docks and how easy/difficult it will be to get from the boat to Central Station as we wish to explore on our own? Thanks in advance.

The river boat cruise terminal is very close to the Central Station see the following 2 pictures:It’s a 5 minutes walk to the main entrance of the station . If you can handle your luggage on wheels I would opt for the train.Both at Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Centraal Station there are elevators to the platforms .At Schiphol pick the right train .At Amsterdam Centraal wait a little till most people have left the platform and just go to the elevator. In the central tunnel underneath the platforms, go to the waterfront . Cross the street at the traffic lights and follow the walkway along the waterfront to the terminal.PJ

Bike Tour Through Waterland

Amsterdam is The Netherlands' capital city and a major North Sea port (via IJmuiden ), as well as Amstel (Rhine) river cruise port. Port's cruise schedule includes mainly ships with roundtrip UK and Baltic Sea itineraries. Amsterdam is also a turnaround/homeport for riverboat cruises, serving itineraries on Rhine, Moselle and the Dutch inland waterways.

The city has population around 1 million (urban 1,35 million, metro over 2,43 million). In September 2023, the city introduced significantly increased taxes for visiting tourists, including via cruise ships. The new taxes are for hotel guests (12,5% over the room charge) and for cruise tourists (EUR 11 pp/~37% increase over the old charge to EUR 8 pp).

Port Amsterdam

Port Amsterdam (officially "Haven van Amsterdam", locode NLAMS) is a major seaport serving Amsterdam City. It is currently ranked Baltic Sea's 2nd largest cargo port (after Aarhus ). The port is on a former bay and via Noordzeekanaal is connected to the North Sea.

In the 17th-century (during the so-called Dutch Golden Age), Amsterdam was one of the main seaports of the Dutch East India Company - the world's first-ever multinational corporation (1602-established). Today, it is Netherlands' second-largest cargo port - after Rotterdam . Port's 2014 statistics showed as handled marine shipping cargo ~97,4 million tons. For comparison, in 2008 the port handled 6029 marine vessels with 75,8 million tons of cargo and 435,129 TEUs (containers).

Annually, Port Amsterdam handles ~50,000 vessels (seagoing, riverboats, barges). Port's total area is 6,2 km2 (2,4 mi2) waterways and plus 20 km2 (7,7 mi2) land areas (quays, roads, railways, green areas). The port comprises several harbors, which are also part of city boroughs (named Westpoort, Westerpark, Centrum, Zeeburg). The list of harbours (haven) includes Afrika, Amerika, West Harbour, Jan van Riebeeck, Petroleum, Coen, Mercurius, Hout, De Ruijter Quay (Ruijterkade), Eastern Trade Quay.

In 2017, Netherlands's positive economy led to a 2,5% increase in shipping volumes at Port Amsterdam - up to 81,3 million cargo tons. Together with other North Sea Canal ports, the total transshipment volume reached the record 100,8 million cargo tons. In Port IJmuiden the growth was 7% (up to 18,5 million tons). Port Beverwijk's increase was 6% (800,000 million tons). Port Zaanstad's increase was 35% (300,000 tons). Port's increase in Ro-Ro shipping was 11% (1,9 million tons). Imports rose by 4% (up to 50,9 million tons). Exports remained unchanged (30,4 million tons).

In 2017 were allocated 18 hectares of land (11 hectares in 2016).  Land recipients were Bio Energy Netherlands (biomass power station generating from waste timber electricity and raw materials for the country's chemical industry) and Chaincraft (biotech company converting biomass into fatty acids). Borghese Real Estate and DHL (logistics) expanded at Atlaspark. Two new facilities were realized at HoogTij park (Gam BAKKER, Container terminal CTV Vrede Steinweg) where Port Amsterdam is a participant. The port also acquired 10 hectares of land on the North Sea Canal's northern side.

In November 2017, the port announced its objectives to achieve up to 50% emissions reduction (NOx, SOx, soot particles) generated by docked ocean cruise ships by the year 2030. Another planned objective was reducing to virtually zero the levels of noise and air pollution caused by diesel generators at all public berths (located inside the city's ring road) by 2018.

• To achieve these goals, into port's Infrastructure was made investments in innovative technologies, like LNG bunkering facilities and shore-side power supply.
• The EUR 10 million budgeted project was scheduled for completion by 2021.
• Port's new incentive program additionally promotes clean shipping and offers discounts on port dues for LNG-powered vessels.

In January 2018, Port Amsterdam signed with Titan LNG a long-term contract for the base (FlexFueler001, in America Harbour) of the company's bunkering pontoon. This was Europe's first such facility . Its central location in the harbour enables LNG transfers by both trucks and special vessels, making it independent from large-scale LNG terminals. America Harbour (draft 9,7 m) can handle both inland and ocean vessels alongside FlexFueler. The number of LNG-powered ships is rapidly growing (via drydock conversion and newbuilds ) as this fuel is cost-effective, suitable for various vessel types and environmentally friendly. LNG completely removes SOx and soot particles, reduces NOx emissions (up to 85%) as well as CO2 emissions. In August 2018, the port started offering a doubled "ESI discount" (Environmental Ship Index) for ESI-certified and LNG-powered vessels.

In December 2018, Port Amsterdam conducted 4-week trials for MADS (Marine Anti Drone System). This program was for monitoring where and why drones (legal and illegal) fly over port's land areas. MADS detects and identifies flying drones within a 5 km (3 mi) range. The system provides GPS coordinates of both the device and its pilot, as well as the drone’s speed and course. More and more seaports worldwide begin to use drones for various purposes, including infrastructure inspections and environmental measurements.

In mid-December 2018 started construction works on the Plastic Recycling Amsterdam project - a partnership with Umincorp (Rotterdam-based) and Milieu Service Nederland (Diemen-based). The new recycling plant has an annual capacity of 17,000 tons. The collected plastics are washed, shredded, separated (via Magnetic Density Separation), then sorted and processed into packaging materials.

For FY2018 (fiscal year), Havenbedrijf Amsterdam NV (port authority) reported a net profit of EUR 68,5 million (12,5% increase over 2017's EUR 60,9 million) and revenue increase 5% (EUR 157,4 million), primarily due to land allocations totaling 45,1 hectares (18 hectares in 2017) and harbor fees increase due to increased transshipment cargo volume (82,3 million tons / 81,3 million in 2017). Port's added value increased 4% (to EUR 7,2 billion), the employment - by 2% (to 68,399 port-related jobs), North Sea Canal Area transshipment cargo volume reached 101,8 million tons. Port's total number of ship calls increased 7% (to 17,952 / 16,813 in 2017). The port handled 180 cruise ship calls plus 2007 riverboat cruise calls. Port’s investments amounted to EUR 53,3 million (40% increase over 2017's EUR 31,9 million).

In March 2019, at Afrikahaven were inaugurated 4 new berths that serve inland liquid bulk carriers - blue cone-marked tankers shipping flammable materials. In the period November 2017 through February 2019, at Amsterdam's Afrikahaven port were constructed a total of 18 new berths (serving inland cargo ships with LOA lengths up to 135 m / 443 ft). The project also included adding 3 mooring quays (plus piles) and building a new concrete quay fitted with a drinking water supply station and a waste processing plant.

For FY2019, Port Amsterdam reported a record transshipment volume of 86,3 million tonnes (6% increase over 2018's 82,3M tonnes). The transshipment growth was largely attributed to the 18% increase in energy products shipping (mainly coal and oil products), also dry bulk (+6%), TEU-containers (+12%), Ro-Ro shipping (+17%), chemical products (+3,4%), construction materials (+2,4%). Imports increased 5,7% (total 53,2M tonnes). Exports increased 5,5% (33,6M tonnes).

In July 2022, HyCC Holding's subsidiary HyCC BV (Hydrogen Chemistry Company/2020-founded joint venture of Nobian and GIG-Green Investment Group) launched "Project H2era" (500-MW green hydrogen plant in the Port area) planned for completion in 2027. A similar but smaller (100-MW "Project H2ermes") was launched in Port IJmuiden. Both plants produce H2 and O2 from seawater via electrolysis (using renewable electricity).

Amsterdam cruise port

Cruise lines that include Amsterdam in their ship schedules increase every year. The terminal handles over 250,000 passengers during high season.

One of Northern Europe's largest cruise ports, Amsterdam handles an average (ship calls) of 140+ ocean and 1500+ river cruises, The annual number of cruise tourists is around 700.000.

In September 2015, MSC Splendida  became port's largest cruise vessel. The seaport has 2 cruise terminals - Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (serving ocean ships) and another terminal located after the locks in IJmuiden.

In 2017, the cruise port handled a total of 134 ship calls (125 in 2016) and 332,998 passengers (281,907 in 2016). At Port IJmuiden, cruise ship calls were 23 (32 in 2016). The total number of river cruise ship calls in 2017 was 1876. The number of river cruise passengers was 495,550.

In late-November 2018, MSC Cruises announced that all of the company's scheduled for 2019-2020 calls at Amsterdam were cancelled. The decision was due to the port's new tourist tax for visiting / transit passengers. The tax is EUR 8 pp per day (for port stays less than 24 hours) and EUR 16 (for overnight port stays / over 24 hours).  MSC refused to recover the additional costs from its customers. In the revised MSC itineraries, Amsterdam was replaced with other Dutch cities, from where was offered (as optional) bus travel to Amsterdam. Following MSC, Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV UK) also cancelled all its pre-booked visits for 2019-2020.

In 2018, Port Amsterdam handled 7525 sea-going vessels (including 180 cruises) and 41424 barges. These numbers for 2017 were, respectively, 7011 and 40012. In 2019, the cruise port received 117 seagoing ship calls (180 in 2018). The decrease was due to the new tourist tax (since January 1, 2018). In 2019 were received 294,000 cruisers (425,000 in 2018).  The seagoing cruise vessels to IJmuiden were 62 (30 in 2018). Port Amsterdam handled 2282 river cruise ships (2007 in 2018).

Port Amsterdam new sealock (world's largest)

A new (world's largest) sealock is currently under construction at IJmuiden (North Sea Canal's entrance). The new facility will provide access to Port Amsterdam even to the world's largest cruise vessels.

The new sealock has a length of 500 m (1640 ft), width 70 m (230 ft) and depth/max draft 18 m (59 ft), ranking it the world’s largest. Construction works started in January 2016, with scheduled completion by the end of 2019. After the sealock's inauguration, Amsterdam port will be accessible (for all types of marine vessels) 24 hours a day.

Sealock project's construction and maintenance costs are about EUR 500 million. In July 2018 was announced, that the planned sealock completion will be delayed by 27 months, now scheduled for the end of January 2022. The existing Noordersluis lock will continue to serve the traffic, but larger ships will not be able to dock at Port IJmuiden.

In mid-July 2022, was announced that in 2025 cruise ships docking at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam will start using shore power . The technology allows berthed vessels to connect to the city's power grid (for the electricity needed for their onboard hotel services) instead of using electricity from their diesel generators, thus reducing in-port air pollution and noise.

Amsterdam cruise terminal

Amsterdam cruise port terminal is located 15 minutes away from the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, right in the city heart. The central train station of Amsterdam is just in 10 minutes walking distance.

Amsterdam cruise terminal has a large reception, tourist information office, cafes, restaurants, luggage facility, and shops. There is a parking area which is underneath Cruise Port Amsterdam's terminal (PTA-Passenger Terminal Amsterdam). The underneath PTA parking costs EUR 30 per day (subject to change). PTA is a multipurpose building where are also hosts various business-related events.

Cruise Port Amsterdam (fka Passenger Terminal Amsterdam) has quays with length 600 m (1970 ft) and depth 10,5 m (35 ft). In normal weather conditions, vessels with max LOA length 330 m (1080 ft) can easily turn in the cruise port to dock at the terminal.

Available for the passengers is a pontoon for transfer to and from different kinds of touring boats. Tourists can use tour boats or public transportation to reach downtown.

At the moment you disembark here, you can enjoy great views of the city from the huge outdoor balcony of the terminal. Cruise tourists can also use the 4-star Movenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre.

• Exploring the canals: Amsterdam has at least 165. All are surrounded by typical houses and beautiful green trees. You can also see the typical 17th century Golden Age houses.
• The Rijksmuseum: exhibitions of famous Dutch Golden Age painters, one of the most popular places to visit. The “top” piece is “Night Watch” by Rembrandt. You will also see Jan Steen’s and Vermeer ‘s paintings.
• The Begijnhof: located in the heart of the old city. A lovely 14th-century place with beautiful houses and green gardens.
• Brown Cafes: or a typical Dutch pub. The name is given after the color of the interior – dark wood and stained by cigarette smoke walls.
• Anne Frank House: nearly a million tourists visit the Anne Frank House every year. The place is touching with the story of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl, and her family. They were hiding in this house during the Nazi occupation.
• Vondelpark: the most popular park in Amsterdam.
• Oude Kerk: dates since 1250 AD, Amsterdam’s oldest church. The paradox is that it is located at the Red Light District center.
• Waterlooplein: located near the City Hall. A huge market, where you can buy anything but usual at a very good price.
• The Red Light District: real notorious highlight. You can see hundreds of young women, wearing only lingerie, behind a red-lit window.
• Coffee Shops: you can buy marihuana or hash for personal use in small quantities.

A Viking Rhine River Cruise Review: Basel To Amsterdam

After two long years of pandemic restrictions, Europe is fully open again! I’m lucky to have an extended family of fellow travel enthusiasts, and we’ve all been looking forward to a reunion vacation in Western Europe for a while now! A Viking River cruise seemed like the perfect offering for a group of eight people spanning three generations . This post is a review of my time on the Viking Hermod as it sailed down the Rhine.

Viking offers various Rhine River cruise itineraries, and the one we booked was called the “ Rhine Getaway .” As of summer 2022, this cruise is eight days long and spans four countries: Switzerland, Germany, France, and the Netherlands . We traveled from Basel to Amsterdam, but it can be booked in the opposite direction as well.

This post is a review of this particular Rhine River cruise. But on a side note, this was also my first time cruising ! If you’re interested in learning about what it was like to experience Viking River Cruises as a first-time cruise passenger, check out my separate post [coming soon]!

The first half of this post is a review of the Rhine Getaway ports of call . I liked all of the cities we stopped in, but some were more impressive than others. To learn more, read on! To skip down to the second half of this post (a review of the ship and its amenities), click here .

Day 1: Boarding in Basel 🇨🇭

This cruise began in  Basel , a quaint little town in Switzerland right on the border of both Germany and France. If you can spend a day or two in Basel before your cruise, I highly recommend it. We booked a walking tour with a local guide (independent of Viking), and I’m really glad we did.

Viking allowed us to board the Hermod in the early afternoon, which gave us plenty of time to get acquainted with the layout of the ship. Our first dinner was served, and finally we were off in the early evening. We passed through our first of many  river locks  on this night, which is one of the most noteworthy aspects of a Rhine River cruise.

If you’re wondering how we made it to Basel, we flew from Chicago into Zürich and then booked a private car transfer. Zürich Airport is the nearest major international airport to Basel, and the drive is about an hour. There are also frequent trains that run between Switzerland’s largest city and its gateway to the Rhine.

Day 2: Breisach 🇩🇪

The Hermod pulled into its first port of call very early in the morning, which meant we had a full day to explore  Breisach , a small village in Germany. I actually decided to skip the included tour (a bus trip to the Black Forest) in the morning and walk across the French border to the village of  Neuf-Brisach . I did this completely on my own; it wasn’t a part of the Viking itinerary at all.

Neuf-Brisach is a sleepy little French town that is surrounded on all sides by a visually stunning series of fortified walls . These walls were designed by French architect  Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban  to help protect border outposts from invasion. You can’t make out the geometry of the walled city from the ground level, but you can explore the city streets and get some sense of their architecture.

In the afternoon, I went back to Breisach and explored its most famous landmark: the  Breisacher Münster St. Stephan , a beautiful brown church that towers over the rest of the town.

The interior of the Breisacher Münster is interesting, but my favorite part of this cathedral is its view from the top of the hill overlooking the village.

Apart from the church, Breisach feels pretty touristy. If you have extra time and want to walk around the town, feel free to. But if you don’t have time or want to rest on the ship instead, you probably won’t miss out on too much.

Day 3: Strasbourg 🇫🇷

Strasbourg is a fascinating city that’s much larger than Breisach. Due to its  location on the Rhine , Strasbourg has a unique mix of French and German cultural elements . It’s also home to a number of European Union institutions, although the Viking itinerary doesn’t include any tours to these government offices. They are clustered in an outlying district of the city.

Instead, we explored Strasbourg’s historic center, based mostly on Grande Île. Here you’ll find the famous Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg , a staggering gothic cathedral that was actually the tallest building in the world from 1647 to 1874!

The other area I really liked in Strasbourg was  Petite-France . This tiny neighborhood is split up by canals that are lined with gorgeous half-timbered homes (the iconic style of German architecture with wood beams on the exterior). We walked through here on our guided tour, and I came back afterwards to enjoy the views for a bit longer.

Day 4: Speyer and Rüdesheim am Rhein 🇩🇪

This was my least favorite day of the cruise, mainly because we only had a few hours in both Speyer and Rüdesheim . I feel like we did get to see slightly more of the former than the latter, but both stops were rushed.

Speyer is a small city  on the western bank of the Rhine . Some notable landmarks include the Dom zu Speyer (Speyer Cathedral) and the Altpörtel (Old Gate) directly west of there. The two are connected by the short Maximilianstraße, which serves as the main street in the historic district.

Viking offered a short included tour, then we had about an hour or so to explore on our own. There are some other interesting churches a little further inland, or you could check out the many side alleys that branch off of the Maximilianstraße.

Speyer seemed like an interesting town. I would’ve enjoyed spending more time there. However, as I mentioned above, this is only a half-day stop. Before lunch, we met in the Domplatz and boarded buses that brought us back to the ship. We sailed for a couple hours before making our second stop of the day in…

Rüdesheim am Rhein

At this point in the cruise, the Rhine starts to become much more scenic. Beautiful villages and vineyards can be seen in all directions.  Rüdesheim  is a touristy town known for its wineries and historic center, called the Drosselgasse . Viking doesn’t offer an included tour here, so I explored on my own. However, since we docked in the late afternoon, time felt even more limited here than in Speyer.

I took a short walk through the Drosselgasse, but I was much more intrigued by all the hilly vineyards overlooking the town. There’s even a chairlift that goes up, hinting that the views up there would be good! I walked up the Oberstraße, which turns into the Germaniastraße. Finally, I turned left onto  this paved trail . The panoramic views were indeed incredible!

Day 5: Cruise through the Rhine Gorge; Stop in Koblenz 🇩🇪

As you leave Rüdesheim, the Rhine River goes from picturesque to spectacular. This day of voyaging through the Rhine Valley is the centerpiece of the entire trip . The surrounding landscape becomes more dramatic. I loved seeing the patchwork of vineyards on the steep mountainsides, but the coolest part of the day is seeing all the castles.

There are so many of them! You truly pass one castle every few minutes once you enter the Rhine Gorge. Our cruise Program Director also provided a running commentary on all of the things we were seeing as we sailed by. There’s something incredible about seeing these archaic stone structures from various angles as you move along the water.

Since we spent the first half of Day 5 cruising, the city of  Koblenz  was another half-day stop. However, our time here didn’t feel as rushed as the whirlwind tours on Day 4. Koblenz is a tourist hub that’s noticeably bigger than Speyer and Rüdesheim. I walked all over the Altstadt (Old Town), which is right next to the Viking River Cruises Dock.

The other main activity in Koblenz is taking the cable car to the other side of the river. Here you’ll find  Festung Ehrenbreitstein , a sprawling nineteenth century fortress that overlooks the town. Visiting the fortress was interesting, but there didn’t seem to be much signage in English, so I don’t feel like I learned a lot about its history while I was there.

One other noteworthy attraction on the southern edge of the Altstadt is  Kurfürstliches Schloss Koblenz . This ornate white palace is surrounded by impeccably maintained gardens that seem to serve as a public square for the city.

Day 6: Cologne (Köln) 🇩🇪

Cologne is the largest city this cruise stops in, so there wasn’t enough time to explore all that I wanted to. With that said, we at least had a full day docked here. The included Viking tour served as a brief introduction to the riverfront and Kölner Dom , the city’s massive iconic cathedral. After that, we had the rest of the day to explore on our own.

I thought the main sanctuary of the cathedral was stunning, but I actually didn’t really like climbing the church tower . The views from the top were fine but not as stunning as some of the other panoramic views I saw on this cruise (e.g. in Breisach or Strasbourg). More importantly, the climb is essentially one long spiral staircase – with visitors going both directions on it! It felt kind of dangerous. Frankly, being on a spiral staircase for that long with only the occasional narrow gothic window was disorienting and dizzying. If you want to climb a church tower, I suggest going up to the top of the Notre-Dame in Strasbourg instead.

After visiting the cathedral, I walked across the Hohenzollernbrücke , which is one of the most notable “love lock” bridges in Europe. Yes, I know this is a trend that’s swept almost the entire world, but the number of locks on the Hohenzollern Bridge is still a sight to behold.

The last thing I did in Cologne was visit the Museum Ludwig . It was hosting a fascinating temporary exhibit featuring the works of  Isamu Noguchi . I’m not the biggest museum enthusiast, but the Ludwig ended up being very captivating.

Day 7: Cruise through the Dutch Countryside; Stop in Kinderdijk 🇳🇱

In all honesty, the Rhine (which turns into the Waal) is less scenic in the Netherlands than it is in Germany. You’re no longer surrounded by hills, vineyards, and castles. Instead, the riverbanks are flat and sandy here.

Our final shore excursion ended up being a really fascinating one: a guided tour of  Kinderdijk , a ‎UNESCO World Heritage Site on the outskirts of Rotterdam famous for its windmills. Our tour guide did an excellent job of introducing us to the history and purpose of mills in the Netherlands.

The landscape here is so pretty, and one of the highlights of this visit was being able to see the inside of a mill. All in all, a short visit to Kinderdijk was a great way to wrap up our final full day on the Viking Hermod.

Day 8: Disembark in Amsterdam 🇳🇱

The Netherlands is a small country, and Kinderdijk is only about 95 kilometers (59 miles) away from Amsterdam. As such, the Hermod was already passing through Utrecht by bedtime. We docked at Amsterdam very early in the morning on our final day.

There were no day tours of Amsterdam organized by Viking on Day 8, but we were allowed to stay on the boat until the late afternoon (with lunch included). However, we did have to vacate our staterooms by 8:00 a.m. so that the cleaning crew could start preparing for the next cruise.

After checking out, guests are free to go on their way. I assume that most people flew out of Amsterdam within a day or two of ending the cruise. However, we stayed for five extra days in Amsterdam and met up with a few more family members there! I had mixed feelings about this bustling Dutch metropolis, which I’ve written about in a separate blog post.

Cruise Review

Now that you’ve seen the itinerary for the Rhine Getaway, the second half of this post will include some information about the actual cruising experience on Viking.

If you’re considering booking this cruise for yourself, you might be wondering: what is the Rhine River actually like between Basel and Amsterdam? Well, in my opinion it seemed to have three distinct sections. From Basel until Speyer (Day 1 to Day 4), the Rhine feels very industrial . It’s lined by factories, and to be honest, the river is not amazing here (although the cities along it are). Luckily, the boat sailed at night through the Upper Rhine, so it’s not like we really missed out on much.

From Speyer to Cologne (Day 4 to Day 6), the Rhine River is incredibly scenic . Viking did a great job of scheduling so that passengers could enjoy the view from the boat during the day on this portion of the trip. The vineyards, villages, and castles of the Middle Rhine are undoubtedly the river’s most unique offerings.

In the Netherlands, the Rhine (or Waal) has a rural vibe to it. We passed cows cooling off in the shallow riverbanks, a few small Dutch villages, and not much else until we approached Amsterdam. The Lower Rhine is not as industrial as the Upper Rhine, and it’s not as picturesque as the Middle Rhine.

The most noteworthy thing about this cruise ship is its capacity: only about 200 passengers . There are four levels, and each room has a window. The ship has one single dining room that can accommodate all passengers at one time, an indoor lounge, a terrace, plus an open-air deck on top that runs the length of the ship.

The meals on our Viking Cruise were consistently amazing ! I really looked forward to coming back on board after each excursion or tour to enjoy whatever was being served that day.

What’s more, Viking offered specialties from each region we were passing through. I loved the fact that I got to try Swiss, German, French, and Dutch food all onboard! They also have a permanent menu that includes classics like Caesar salad, steak, and burgers, but I ordered most of my meals from their rotating menu.

The Viking breakfast buffet is also excellent! The omelette station is absolutely worth waiting in line for, plus it moves along fairly quickly.

Of course, you could always eat at local restaurants while you’re exploring the cities along the Rhine. We did that once or twice, but the food on the ship was so delicious that I rarely wanted to pass it up.

Should you get the drink package?

You’ll have to make this decision for yourself, but beer and wine are included with each meal even if you don’t purchase the unlimited drink package. I did the math, and you’d basically have to drink two additional cocktails each day (outside of lunch and dinner) to make the package worthwhile. I enjoy drinking to be sure, but I would typically have wine with my meals and limit myself to one cocktail per day. My total bar tab came out to be about 90 euro for the entire trip.

Like the food, all of the alcoholic drinks on this cruise were expertly crafted. Everything tasted great, and they were never watered down or too strong. They even made a great White Russian, which is one of my favorite cocktails!

At every port of call, Viking offered one included (free) tour. These tended to be walking tours that lasted about two hours and introduced guests to the various cities. In general, I’d say these tours were pretty good. However, if you’d rather explore one of the stops on your own (or even stay on the ship), you are more than welcome to skip any of the tours.

You can also pre-book one of many “Optional Excursions,” which are tours that you’ll have to pay extra for. I never did any of the Optional Excursions, so I can’t say if they were better or worse than the included tours.

The Viking Hermod was not a massive vessel. As such, it didn’t have all of the amenities that some other cruise ships might. There was no pool, casino, food court, gym, bowling alley, nightclub, etc. Part of this is because Viking’s clientele seems to skew older : my cousin, my brother, and I (in our twenties or late teens) were the youngest passengers on board. Viking River Cruises does not allow minors, so there are no amenities specifically aimed at kids.

Despite this, the Viking Hermod had a beautifully designed interior. The atrium and dining room were both warm and inviting spaces. The lounge and front terraces were comfortable places to sit, relax, or sip a drink. The ship’s common spaces never felt cramped, even when all the passengers were gathered together (e.g. during dinnertime).

I also found the stateroom to be comfortably sized. There is lots of space to store your luggage, and I found that the bathroom and shower weren’t too small.

Entertainment and Activities

One thing I really loved about this cruise was that there were lots of fun optional activities onboard the ship in the afternoons and evenings. Our family group enjoyed game nights and musical performances, but you could also attend things like a glassblowing demonstration or a Q&A session with the captains of the ship.

Longtime readers of my blog will know that I don’t shy away from giving my honest opinion when it comes to travel. If an attraction is overrated, I will tell you that. If a tour is underwhelming, I will tell you that. With that in mind, I’m happy to report that this Viking River Cruise was an outstanding experience ! I’ll cherish the memory of going down the Rhine with my extended family for the rest of my life.

Was the cruise perfect? No. I really would’ve preferred a little more time in fewer stops. If I could offer one suggestion to Viking, I’d say either choose Speyer or Rüdesheim am Rhein, and spend the entire day there. However, cruising through the Rhine Gorge the next day made up for it. Sailing past all those castles was the highlight of this cruise.

If you’re looking for an upscale travel experience in Western Europe, consider Viking’s Rhine Getaway. I had never been to Switzerland, Germany, France, or the Netherlands before this trip. Now, I can’t wait to go back and explore all four of those countries in greater depth! It’s safe to say this cruise inspired even more wanderlust in me. By that metric, I’d say it was a resounding success!

We have not yet done a river cruise. And the Viking River Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam sounds like a great itinerary. So many lovely stops along the way. I would love to see all the castles and palaces along this route. The Viking ship looks like a great way to travel on the rivers.

We are leaving September 7 for the Amsterdam to Lucerne cruise and staying over in Lucerne 2 days. You have described everything perfectly so I know what to expect. Just praying they get rain between now and then.

Peggy did you get rain? Did you have to disembark for a day and go on a sister ship?

A Glowing review of Viking River Cruising. However you were fortunate to travel on a longship from destination to destination, we just completed are first Viking River Cruise and we had quite the opposite experience and picture you describe so charmingly above. Having arrived back a week ago from the Grand European Tour, Budapest to Amsterdam we were exhausted and could have done with another holiday. It would be to long for me to go into all the details, I could fill a book, but now looking back Viking should really have given us an update on the current River conditions. Basically they didn’t, and there lies the problem, yes we knew about the possibility of low and high water but had no idea how bad it was before we arrived, only to be told by a fellow passenger when we boarded ship of the current situation, having to maybe change boats half through our tour. Well we were prepared for that we could handle it and enjoy ourselves what unfolded was problem on problem on problem. Pack unpack pack unpack get the picture, inordinate bus journeys on a longship leisurely cruise, you’d be lucky. hotel stays in Vienna Köln & Amsterdam, Viking docking areas that were waste or industrial sites and nowhere near a village never mind town or city. We changed boats 4 times and even never left on the one we boarded in the first place, most of the excuses were obvious low water etc etc, but then when you have just got off a coach because you couldn’t travel down the Danube or Rhine because of ‘Low Water’ but then you hear from another Viking tour group that you just crossed paths with that they travelled down on that same stretch of water with no problem or we’re about to travel down the stretch water that you just spent 2 hours on a coach because we were told we couldn’t, makes you think what’s go on and who’s telling the truth? Don’t get me wrong the-programme director and staff on the first week were great and worked tirelessly, the 2nd half not so much, funny that! Anyway I could go on on, but there doesn’t seem no point, we were promised that Viking would contact on our return, still waiting a week on, but having trawled the internet and Viking Customer websites I won’t hold my breath in getting anywhere with that approach if what I hear is all true! I always thought Viking was a leading light in River Cruising, shows you how wrong you can be.

Hi Mike, Thanks for your honesty. We are due to board Viking’s Rhine River Cruise on 9/9, two years after canceling twice because of the pandemic. However, with all the news of the drought and low water levels in Europe, we have sadly decided to cancel once again. We will rebook in the late spring when the River is at a higher level. .Speaking with Viking, they made it sound like it was probably only a bus ride between two ports and that there hasn’t been a problem so far. However, your post has given a more honest picture of what actually happened, validating our decision to cancel. Thanks again for your post.

Just did the Rhine on the Viking Mani mid April with my mom. It was my 1st cruise and first time « across the pond » Did you get to see the parrots in Cologne? It was an amazing sight to see them flying over the longboat to roost for the night. I made some Rudensheim coffee during one of the exhibits on the boat. I had the adventure of my dreams on this cruise. The pre-excursions on Lake Lucerne were amazing. The Pearls of Switzerland excursion was worth the extra money but be prepared for a 13 hour tour. The Alps we’re breathtaking and I got to make CHEESE (and bring some back to the states?

I’ve always wondered about Viking cruises! I see their ads all the time. The only cruise I’ve done is on the Nile River; big cruise ships don’t appeal to me, but I don’t mind the much smaller river boats and more frequent shore excursions. This really sounds like a lovely way to see a lot of Europe!

Think twice about cruising now. We just returned from the Rhine Get Away Cruise. We had to do a “ship swap” due to low river levels which meant packing up and getting out of our cabin at 8am the next morning. We also spent 5-6 hours on a coach bus to get to our next destination. The scenic castle tour advertised was not possible. Viking offered a $50 on board credit for our inconvenience. In addition, both my husband and I left the ship sick and tested positive for COVID. I’m disappointed that Viking never checked to make sure passengers were vaccinated. There were many people that were coughing and appeared to be sick on this cruise.

What trip did you take? We are planning on Basel to Amsterdam next July and wonder if that is the same as you. I am getting mixed information about the river level and the experiences. Any insight you could share would be appreciated. Thank you

Viking, please address the concerns re the low tide. My cruise is Nov 13. Physically, I cannot do Bus Tours ior do extra packing and unpacking That is not what I signed up for. So if Viking plans on transferring passengers and traveling on busses….then they need to cancel the trip. I need and want a nice, peaceful, laid back River Cruise The President of Viking says he treasures HONESTY. Let’s put that to work.

Good afternoon, We have plans on going on Viking in July 2023 from Basel To Amsterdam. I appreciate the honesty of some of these reviews. The river level is of great concern to my husband and me. And with weather conditions and forecasts being what they are, my fear is this issue will get worse over time not better. One huge attraction to a river cruise is the lovely scenery during the time on board as well as only unpacking one time in 8 days. I will be contacting Viking to ask about their issues this year and just how much disruption there has been to date. Also noting, I have read some other issues regarding the Rhine River. One issue appears to be the huge increase in traffic on the river. The container ships appear to be taking less tonnage, therefore, increasing the number of ships on the river. I appreciate the commentary and will be looking for more answers before we pay the balance of our scheduled trip for 2023.

Yes, that is the same cruise we were on. We did a “ship swap” due to low river levels. It was an inconvenience for sure packing up and getting out of the room by 8am. We spent quite a bit of time (I believe 6 hours or so) on a coach bus getting to our next destination. We also made a stop at and docked for the night at a port that was very industrial and unattractive. Viking did the best they could under the circumstances. We missed the scenic cruising through the castle gorge because of this ship swap. Keep an eye of river levels before paying for this cruise. I’ve heard that some cruises had to do this “ship swap” twice!

Just returned from the Romantic Danube Cruise – Budapest to Regensberg 8/28/22 with the Prague extension and a non-Viking extension in Amsterdam for my 60th birthday.

It was an AMAZING experience!!!

Our ship, ATLA, also experienced low water levels so could not dock at Regensburg and we had to take a bus to get to Regensburg. Thankfully we were able to get there because that was my favorite city of the entire tour!!!

Viking is amazing and I loved every minute of it and cannot wait to go back for another cruise! They go all out – I felt supported and pampered with little to no stress! Everything is done for you – from the excursions to the food to the entertainment to having your room cleaned every time you turn around! All of the Danube cities are picturesque, clean and stunningly beautiful! And I found the pace great!

The only thing I saw as a drawback, and agree with the Caffeinated, there was not enough time given in several cities for shopping and exploring. I paid for the extension to go to Salzburg to see the Sound of Music sites. Our guide was terrible! The guides on these excursions are so important and will make or break an excursion. We were rushed through and I even had to ask to go see the steps and fountain in the movie where the kids are running through the palace grounds!!

I second the recommendation to Viking to allow a lot more time in some cities such as Vienna Regensburg, Passau, Salzburg etc. I also recommend a specifically focused Sound of Music tour for all of us old people who loved that movie!

Despite some rushing and low water levels I would go back in a heartbeat!!!

Thank you for the feedback. I do appreciate the information. For the cost of the trip, I am starting to rethink it for sure. My feelings about climate change and seeing any dramatic changes for the good by next year are not too optimistic. We may tour Europe via another mode of transportation.

We have not addressed Viking directly as yet. My feeling is that they will most likely give the glowing reviews and how next year will be fine. I would much rather read information from guests and their experiences.

Hi, enjoyed your review. We are booked with 7 other couples for a Viking Rhine Getaway in April, Basel to Amsterdam. Very excited and love reading the reviews and seeing the photos. It will be all of our first river cruise. Some of us are starting a week earlier for time in Italy & Switzerland, part of us are also staying longer in Amsterdam afterward. Out excursions we’re just posted & we signed up for most of the included ones. But we are trying to figure a way to get to Heidelberg instead of Speyer & Rudesheim. We don’t want to do the ship’s excursion to Heidelberg.

How to Get from Amsterdam River Cruise Dock to Rijksmuseum

I’ve spent a bit of time in Amsterdam over the last seven years, either on a river cruise or at an Air B&B. But I had no idea how to get from the Amsterdam river dock to the world-famous Rijksmuseum. Each time I was here, I promised myself I’d go, but I never did. 

With its showcase of Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Vermeer, the museum is a must-see. And every visit here, I found other things to do, like visit nearby Keukenhof Gardens for the tulip festival. This visit, I learned how to use Amsterdam public transportation to get to the museum.

It wasn’t too difficult to figure out how to get from Amsterdam river dock to Rijksmuseum! My day in Amsterdam just took a new turn. 

How to Go From Amsterdam River Cruise Dock to Rijksmuseum

After you exit from the dock, turn right. That’s a no-brainer. Don’t cross the street but continue along the light-colored sidewalk in front of the river ships. Look straight ahead and you’ll see Amsterdam Centraal Station.

Once over the bridge, continue walking (simply follow the other walkers) until you reach the train station, about 7-8 minutes. You will eventually have to cross the bike lane and do it at a proper zebra (white striped) crosswalk. Look out for bikes!

Note to self: 1. Watch out for bicycles 2. Purchase museum ticket online.

After you’ve crossed the bike path, you’ll find several open-air entrances into the station. Go into the first one (between the Saigon Café and Saltzer Fishbar). The easiest path then is to turn right after the Fishbar and follow the wide corridor until you get to the main perpendicular corridor, marked Centrum.

So you’ve gone left into the station, right at the Saltzer Fishbar, left at the main corridor where you can see straight through to daylight and the other side exit doors.

Walk through the main corridor and exit onto the sprawling plaza outside the station.

You will now take either the #2 or #5 tram to the Rijksmuseum.

How to get your tram ticket for Number 2 or 5 tram

You have three choices. In the main terminal that you just walked through were yellow and blue self-serve ticket machines. Outside you’ll find these silver and blue machines. The other option is to purchase the ticket on the tram.

It’s easy to purchase your tram ticket when on the tram if you know how. Enter the tram from the door closest to the end (it’s too crowded to enter at the front and squeeze your way to the back of the multi-car tram.

At the very back of the tram there’s a staffed ticket booth. Simply ask for the 24-hour pass and pay. The cost for one hour is Euro 2.90. An all-day pass that’s good on all transportation including the Big Red Ho-Ho Bus (hop on/hop off) is only 6.90 Euro.

You’ll get a ticket which will be “beeped” on a sensor and then handed to you. As you leave the tram, be sure to touch your ticket to the sensor. Watch what the locals do – it’s called a “check out”.

There are about 5-6 stops before yours. The stop for the museum will be announced and nearly everyone on the tram will exit. Carefully cross the bike path, follow the sidewalk next to the iron gate and soon on your left will be the gorgeous façade of the Rijksmuseum .

Since you’ve purchased your museum ticket online, follow the sign for “Already Ticketed”. If you have a coat, you can check it for free in the coatroom or rent a locker for .50 euro which will be returned upon retrieval. Backpacks are NOT allowed, even if they’re a small purse-like backpack.

You can sign up for guided tours or go it yourself. There are museum guides in a zillion languages at the circular marble kiosk that you’ll see when you enter.

Where is the Rembrandt Gallery and “Night Watch”

If you want to head straight to the Rembrandt and Vermeer gallery, called Gallery of Honor, head to the second floor via elevator or stairs. Follow the stream of people. At the very far end of the massive exhibition gallery hall you’ll see Rembrandt’s masterpiece, “Night Watch”. If there’s no crowd at first, head over there immediately. You can take your time and retrace your path to view the rest of the gallery later, as crowds gather in front of “Night Watch”.

When it’s time to leave the museum, retrace your original path because you’ll want to exit from the same doorway that you entered. This time, your #2 or #5 tram will be on the museum side, not the museum shop side, so no major bike path to cross. But always check anyway.

If it’s more convenient, take the tram back to Centraal Station and get your bearings. If you’re comfortable, exit at the Dam stop. Walk back to the ship after passing all the souvenir shops, French Fry stands and designer boutiques. If you get lost, just keep heading towards the harbor or Centraal Station. No matter your route, you’ll have to cross a big bridge to get to the harborside.

There you have it. A wonderful day in Amsterdam on your own!

Hi Jeanette, Thank you so much for reading my article! If you arranged your air flights with the river cruise company then they’ll transfer you and your luggage to the river boat. Otherwise, take a taxi or the train to Amsterdam Centraal. Chances are you won’t be able to put your luggage into your cabin, but they can hold it for you. In fact, after you grab a cookie or something to eat and drink in the lounge (the waiting area), then you’re free to take off and explore. Remember jet lag and don’t overdo it, Make sure to note the All Aboard time! I would think it is definitely do-able to go to the museum before your ship unties!

We Just Returned From Our First Viking River Cruise And Here’s What It Was Really Like

We just returned from a Viking Seine River cruise and share what it is like to be onboard a Viking longship sailing through Northern France.

Boarding a river ship that only holds 168 guests was a bit different for us given we usually sail on the world’s largest cruise ships. But, to explore Paris and the banks of Northern France, we decided to step outside of our comfort zone and put our trust in the crew of Viking Radgrid. This vessel is one of four Viking longships specifically designed to cruise the Seine River.

While we have sailed with Viking on the brand’s ocean and expedition ships, this was our first river cruise. Now, we are back from our Paris & the Heart of Normandy itinerary and want to share what it was really like in our Viking Seine River cruise review.

Viking Seine River Cruise Review

Exploring the world in comfort.

When cruising with Viking, regardless of whether it is an ocean, expedition, or river ship, there are many similarities. From modern Scandinavian design and warm hospitality to a level of inclusion not found on contemporary brands, Viking guests feel right at home. This level of consistency helped ease us into our first river cruise experience.

It also helps that Viking guests are taken care of from the moment they arrive at the airport. With Viking’s all-inclusive offering, flights booked with the cruise line include free transfers from the airport to the ship.

While we usually fly in a day before any cruise, this Paris & the Heart of Normandy itinerary includes an extra day at the embarkation point. Thus, there is no need for a pre-cruise hotel unless you want to extend your stay.

Luckily, we had a direct, overnight flight from Boston to Paris. Arriving around 9:30 AM, we were quickly greeted by a Viking representative in a bright red coat and were on a bus heading to the ship within 30 minutes of getting our luggage. Unfortunately, Viking can’t help the traffic though, as it was nearly a 2 hour drive from Charles de Gaulle airport to our docking location in Paris.

However, upon arrival at the ship, embarkation was a breeze. We were checked in, escorted to our stateroom with our luggage, and ready to get our adventure started.

Viking Inclusions

If you are new to cruising with Viking, you should know what’s included in your cruise fare and what’s not. Included on all Viking river cruises are:

• Beer and wine at lunch and dinner
• One daily excursion
• Specialty coffee, tea, soda, and bottled water

Unfortunately, there is no room service on Viking river cruises. There is also no pool, fitness center, spa, or casino. Further, beyond beer and wine at meals, all other alcoholic beverages will cost extra. Viking does offer the Silver Spirits drink package, which is very reasonably priced at $25 per person, per day.

One of the staples on any cruise is dining and Viking river cruises are no different. On Viking Radgrid, there are two main dining areas, The Restaurant and the Aquavit Terrace.

The Restaurant on Deck 2 is a formal restaurant that resembles a typical main dining room. With panoramic windows lining both sides of the venue, there are constant scenic views. The Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a variety of options and local specialties. Though, you’ll need to make friends as there are mostly large tables and no tables just for two.

The Restaurant usually opens for breakfast around 7 AM and is a hybrid dining experience. It includes a small buffet of breakfast items like scrambled eggs, bacon, and breakfast potatoes. Guests can also order off a menu with made-to-order items like pancakes and French toast.

Lunch is served promptly from noon to about 2 PM each day, which means all cruisers need to dine during these hours if they want lunch. The lunch menu consists of always available options like the signature salad and a hamburger. There are also a few rotational selections that vary daily like short ribs and an energy bowl.

Each evening, dinner followed that night’s port talk, usually starting at 7 PM. Again, cruisers can opt for always available selections or regional specialties with Chef Recommendations that included dishes like brie pane, poulet aux morilles, mille-feuille, and boeuf a la bourguignonne. One evening, Viking also features a signature regional buffet, which was the Taste of Normandy on our sailing.

While the menus are smaller than main dining rooms on most ocean ships, the quality and presentation were top notch.

The second dining offering is the Aquavit Terrace up on Deck 3. Offering tables for 2 and 4 and al fresco dining, this venue serves the same menu as The Restaurant for lunch and dinner. The only difference is the more casual setup and ambiance.

Unfortunately, the patio was closed for most of the cruise, given the mostly unfavorable weather conditions. So, each night, it became a competition to nab the handful of tables available inside the Aquavit Terrace.

In addition, cookies (continental items in the morning) and 24-hour specialty coffees and teas are available at two self-serve stations on Deck 3. Along with the selection of espresso beverages, they also offer syrups and skim milk. Thus, we had all the essential ingredients for Heidi’s twice-daily nonfat caramel latte.

What we did miss though were more casual, grab-and-go options. While the Aquavit Terrace did have continental breakfast selections, it did not offer the same setup for lunch or dinner. We would have liked the ability to grab a sandwich, a personal pizza, or salad to bring back to our room on some occasions, especially because there’s no room service. Thus, after a long day in port, the only option is a sit-down meal.

Onboard Amenities and Activities

In contrast to the larger ocean ships on which we typically sail, Viking Radgrid only has four decks and hence few public areas. Deck 2 is home to a small Guest Services desk and a small shop with Viking logo items and children’s books by Viking’s EVP Karine Hagen.

Deck 3 features a small library with books and games, an “internet cafe” with two computers, and the Lounge. The Lounge is the main bar and entertainment space on the ship.

Deck 4 is a full length sundeck with plenty of seating to enjoy the outdoors as the weather allows. It also features a small herb garden, a walking track, and the smoking area. One mile will take nearly 16 laps around the track.

Further, anyone interested can sign up at guest services for a visit to the wheelhouse. Unlike the bridge of a ship, this top-deck wheelhouse is hydraulic and lowers automatically when encountering low bridges.

Of note, there is one small elevator for those with mobility issues as well.

Nighttime Entertainment

With each new day consisting of at least one new port of call, there was little downtime during our Viking Seine River cruise. As one of the benefits of river cruising, guests get to explore off the beaten path destinations and quaint towns that can’t be accessed by larger cruise ships. There’s also more time in port, sometimes even two different ports in one day, and plenty of scenic cruising in between stops.

Subsequently, the Viking Daily’s list of onboard activities is more sparse when compared to ocean cruising. One morning, a local artist did come on board to offer a lecture on impressionism.

Then, once most cruisers are back on board in the evenings, there is usually some kind of activity taking place in the Lounge. Following dinner, we enjoyed live local musicians or a cultural activity, like opera singers and a string trio.

Additionally, the program director, Mia, hosted a port talk around 6:30 PM each day. This included an introduction to the next day’s ports, tour options, and any procedural information that we needed to know. During our sailing, Mia also hosted a French lesson and a game show that was a lot of fun. Having more game shows and group activities like this throughout the week would have been nice.  

Besides being a great host, Mia did an outstanding job coordinating the excursions. She always had a smile, was talkative, and was present throughout the ship at all hours of the day. Given that she was essentially the entire activities staff, she managed her many duties well.

We stayed in stateroom 219, a veranda (B) stateroom on Deck 2. All the cabins on the starboard side of this deck are balcony cabins, while those on the portside are French balcony cabins. Deck 1 consists of standard staterooms, which feature river views from a half-height picture window. Deck 3 consists of additional veranda and French balcony staterooms, along with a few suites.

While cruise ship cabins are small in general, this 205-square-foot cabin felt even cozier than the typical balcony staterooms found on ocean ships.

Immediately upon entering the room, the bathroom was on the aft wall. The tiled shower had just enough room, thanks to the double-sided glass doors. With two storage shelves and upgraded features like premium bath products and heated floors, the bathroom was comfortable and functional for the week.

Across from the bathroom is the closet. It featured deep shelves with the safe on one side and a clothes bar with hangers on the other side. The forward wall has a long table/desk, four drawers which we used for additional clothing storage, and a mini fridge. Here, you’ll also find carafes of water that are refilled daily and the Quietvox devices which are utilized on most shore excursions.

Further, the cruise line allows guests to bring local products back on the ship, like food or alcoholic beverages, that are able to be consumed during the voyage. So, this is a nice perk.

The queen-sized Viking Explorer bed is on the aft wall facing forward, across from the desk. Each side of the bed has a 110 V outlet, European outlet, and 2 USBs. There was also a nightstand on one side and a small table on the other along with one lone chair.

This seating area was a bit tight, but the nook became my workstation for the week. The table was large enough to house my computer and charge various devices.  

Getting from the door, past the bed, to the balcony is a tight squeeze. But, considering only 35 cabins on the ship have a veranda, we are not complaining. We appreciated having the balcony with two chairs and a table to enjoy the scenic cruising.

Viking Seine River Cruise Review – The Itinerary

Our Paris & the Heart of Normandy 8-day itinerary consisted of seven ports of call. Along with Paris and the Beaches of Normandy, the stops ranged from quaint villages to bustling cities. Each port along the way offered an opportunity to experience something new.

With 6 included tours, and two optional excursions, there wasn’t dull moment, as we wanted to make the most of our first visit to this region.

Springtime in Paris

We embarked Viking Radgrid in Paris where the ship remained through the following day. Given the rainy weather and jet lag, we did not get out to explore much during our first day in the city. So, we packed in as much as possible on the second day of our cruise.

The weather was slightly better on Day 2. It was cloudy, with a few periods of sun, but it was still rather chilly. In the morning, we set off on Viking’s included Panoramic Paris shore excursion.

This mix of a bus tour and walking tour hit several of the city’s highlights. It included a city center stop for a selfie in front of the Eiffel Tower, a ride down the Champs-Élysées, and two circles around the Arc de Triomphe for photos. We did get off the bus for a short while near Notre Dame and the Latin quarter. The 3.5-hour tour was a good overview as we had never been to Paris. But, given the 2024 Olympics, many areas were under construction.

Back to the ship for a quick lunch, we headed out on one of the optional tours to the Palace of Versailles in the afternoon. This 4-hour tour included a transfer to the 17th-century palace. Now a museum, we had a standard tour that took several large groups through two wings of the massive building.

Our tour guide did a great job weaving through the crowds. She never stopped her narration of the history as we dodged other tourists. Unfortunately, we had limited time to explore the gardens independently afterwards as we got caught in a rainstorm.

We Had the Chateau to Ourselves

On Day 3, we awoke in the quaint village of La Roche-Guyon.

For the morning, we strolled the picturesque streets of this small community situated right along the banks of the Seine River. Various historic buildings exist throughout the village, but the 12th-century Château de La Roche-Guyon is the most iconic.

We opted for a self-guided tour with the Viking discount, which costs $7.50 per visitor. We spent about 90 minutes exploring this partially restored castle using the audio guide and overview map. If you can handle the 250 steps, a walk up to the castle’s bell tower is worth it for the panoramic views of the village.

With the ship departing for Vernon at 2 PM, we opted for one of the included tours to the town of Auvers-sur-Oise. This little known locale is the final home of the impressionist painter Vincent Van Gough. This tour included stops in the town associated with the 70 days the painter spent here before the tragic end of his life, including the famous church he painted.

Again, our tour guide was excellent. She provided a wealth of history and backstory about the town, the region, and this iconic artist. We also had some free time to pop into a local bakery for fresh pastries.

Of note, this tour was a substitute for the Monet Gardens given we were too early in the season.

Roaming the Streets of Rouen

Grey skies loomed overhead as our longship sailed along the Seine, approaching our most northern stop, Rouen, on Day 4. With small towns, factories, and pastures dotting the coastline, we had a lazy morning of work.

After lunch, we headed ashore for the 1:45 PM walking tour of the city. For about 90 minutes, our guide weaved in and out of a few blocks showcasing the 16th-century architecture. From the half-timbered buildings intertwined with modern-day shops and cafes, Roen was much different than any of the places we visited on this trip.

While not walking far, we did hit the highlights. Among the photo-ops were the Church of Saint Maclou, the Palace of Justice, the Church of St. Joan of Arc, the Town Clock and Belfry, and the Notre Dame Cathedral.

The tour ended at the Old Market Place, giving us free time to explore independently. While the museums in town are free, we opted for macarons and Starbucks coffee. That’s French enough, right?

Remembering The Past

Along with the embarkation city of Paris, the other highlight of this itinerary is a full-day excursion to the landing beaches of Normandy.  

On Day 5, we set off from Roen (where we were docked overnight) on this 11-hour tour. The briefing the night before set the emotional stage for the tour and reliving the historic events of June 6, 1944.

The day-long excursion included an approximately 2.5-hour drive to Caen. One of the major holdouts after the landing, this city is home to a thoughtfully laid-out and curated museum. Our stop included approximately two hours here with a partially guided tour. We then had some free time to explore the exhibits on our own.

From here, we made a short lunch stop before heading to the American National Cemetery, about 45 minutes away. We had about 90 minutes at the cemetery, which included a brief ceremony at the memorial and time to roam the grounds where over 9,400 American soldiers are buried.

The final stop was at Omaha Beach. The 30 minutes here let guests walk along the beach and reflect on the D-day landing. Back on the bus, it was close to three hours back to the ship.

A Sunny Day in Les Andelys

When we pulled into the charming village of Les Andelys on Day 6, it was quite grey. The early morning fog made us concerned it would be another gloomy day. Yet, by late morning, the skies cleared, and it was a bright and sunny midday—at least for now.

With our tour scheduled for 2 PM, we had free time to see some of the sights on our own. Thus, we took a quick stroll and made sure to grab some photos and videos of the ship before meeting our tour shoreside.

We spent the next two hours strolling the streets of this picturesque village with our energetic and enthusiastic tour guide. The most impressive site is the 12th-century Chateau Gaillard, built by Richard the Lion Heart. Technically, you can get better shots of the remains from the riverbank, but making the trek to the top is worth it. We were able to get amazing pictures of the town and the ship from here.

Along the way, we also learned about the town’s history and the chateau’s construction. Of note, it is a rather steep ascent. So, do keep your physical fitness levels in mind.

When we finished the tour, we took our guide’s advice to grab some sweets and a French baguette from a local pâtisserie. Thankfully, we just made it inside when the skies opened and there was some of the worst hail we’ve ever seen!

A Change of Plans

Ahead of the cruise, we received a warning that the ship might be unable to dock in Paris due to river water levels. While we could board the ship a short walk from the Eiffel Tower a week ago, that would not be the case for departing Viking Radgrid.

During the disembarkation day talk, the captain announced that the ship would be docking in Le Pecq for the last two days due to high river levels. This did not dramatically change our plans; although, it did mean that we wouldn’t get to walk around Paris at all.

For the last day of this cruise, we had two tours scheduled. The first was the included tour of Napoleon’s Chateau de Malmaison. 

After a short drive to the Chateau, we had about two hours to tour the early 19th-century seat of Napoleon’s government. While not as impressive as some other French castles we visited during this cruise, it was relatively empty which was a nice reprieve. This gave the Viking groups plenty of time and space to enjoy this hidden gem.  

Back on the ship by 12:30 PM, it was a mad dash to lunch before our next 1:30 PM tour. This optional excursion included a guided tour of the Louvre and a brassiere dinner. However, I don’t think we were ready for what a busy museum full of tour groups and priceless works of art really looked like.

To see all the Louvre offers would take two months of daily visits. So, we only got to see the highlights while dodging the crowds. But, from the original fortress foundations to Greek and Italian sculptures to the French crown jewels, the roughly 2.5 hours touched on some of the more noteworthy pieces.

Of course, no trip to this museum is complete without seeing the Mona Lisa or the Venus de Milo. While we did have to battle the crowds, we were able to snap a selfie with the slightly smiling lady.

After some free time to browse the gift shops, we went to a local brassiere for an “authentic” French dinner. Although, the Caprese salad and broiled lamb chop were not precisely what we envisioned. But, the massive profiterole for dessert was a perfect ending to our seven days in France.

Our Viking Seine River Cruise Review Recap

Over 7 days, we traveled back in time through several centuries. We explored historic chateaus, sampled French cuisine, and marveled at the heroism of Allied troops at the very beaches they stormed 80 years ago.

The 55 crew members of Viking Radgrid ensured we were well-fed and well-taken care of along the way. Those who have sailed on smaller cruise ships will feel right at home with the friendliness and quaint surroundings of this longship. With upscale dining, cozy accommodations, and twice-daily service, Viking wraps cruisers in comfort and handles every little detail of the trip.

The onboard atmosphere is casual and relaxed, and Viking Radgrid felt like a floating home away from home.

We must admit as mega-ship cruisers, we were worried that there wouldn’t be enough to do on such a small ship. Yet, that was never the case. In fact, we were often so tired from a day full of exploration ashore that we had to actively keep ourselves awake to enjoy the nighttime entertainment. A round of espresso martinis also helped.

On most of our trips, the ships themselves are the destination. While on a river cruise, the itinerary is the focus. With Viking Radgrid blending into the background, we were able to absorb the scenery, culture, and history. We can’t think of a better way to explore this region than by a river cruise ship.

Ocean cruises and river cruises are two very different options to “sea the world, one port at a time”. But if you enjoy the comforts of a cruise ship and want to explore new destinations, we encourage you too to step outside of your comfort zone and try a river cruise.

Viking offers various sailings throughout Europe, Asia, and even on the Mississippi and Nile rivers. So, we suspect you will find a region of the world worth exploring on your first river cruise.

Cruising The Heart of Normandy With Viking

We sat in a French sidewalk cafe, the chill of an early spring morning mitigated by a piping hot cafe au lait and croissant. To the left, the iconic spire of the Eiffel Tower. Directly in front of us, the longship Viking Radgrid preparing to welcome us on board. As we watched the bustling sideshow of Parisian street life, our thoughts drifted to the week ahead: cruising the Seine River through the heart of Normandy. 

The 7-night journey begins with a full day and a half in Paris. Viking’s all-inclusive format includes complimentary shore excursions in every destination, and this cruise kicks off with a panoramic tour of the City of Lights. Although the city is currently preparing for the upcoming Olympics, taking a look at the rebuilding of Notre Dame, a stroll through the Latin Quarter and a panoramic drive through the city rekindles our fascination.

Bidding adieu to the city, Viking Radgrid navigates through the first of a series of locks on its way to our first port, La Roche-Guyon. This small village is home to a marvelous chateau positioned directly beneath a medieval hilltop keep. Strolling the streets is as picturesque as one can imagine, with locals brandishing freshly baked baguettes under their arms as they pass the sidewalk cafes and small shops.

Following lunch, guests are transported through the pastoral countryside of Normandy that served as inspiration for artists such as Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh. A guided excursion through Auvers-sur-Oise explores the town that was home to Van Gogh prior to him taking his own life. In his final 70 days, he created 75 paintings and more than 30 drawings capturing the colorful village.

Back on board, the captain hosts a welcome cocktail party for guests followed by a dinner of regional delicacies. Viking’s inclusive program features complimentary wines and beers with lunch and dinner and coffee and teas are available 24/7. As in all public areas and accommodations, the Restaurant displays tasteful contemporary design. The Aquavit Terrace provides for dining in a glass-enclosed conservatory. A program of nightly entertainment in the welcoming Lounge caps off days immersed in local history. 

Sailing past riverside villages in the morning, Viking Radgrid arrives in the city of Rouen for an afternoon excursion exploring narrow streets lined with timber-framed homes, old market squares, and monumental gothic churches.

The following day’s highlight is a full-day excursion to Omaha Beach, recounting the incredible events of the D-day incursion that eventually liberated France from Nazi occupation. A solemn visit to the American cemetery, the Caen Museum, and the landing beach itself is more than an excursion. It is a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

The ship navigates back upstream to Les Andelys, with the imposing ruins of Chateau Gaillard towering above and the church bells heralding Easter Sunday mass. A morning stroll along the Seine’s river bank embraces the serenity of village life. On the final day, guests tour Chateau de la Malmaison, the elegant residence of Napoleon and Josephine.

Viking has established themselves as a major player in both river and ocean cruising by never veering from high cruise standards. The pride that they take in their immaculate ships and attentive staff is well-justified. Previously, we were thoroughly impressed on a pair of Viking Ocean cruise itineraries , but it had been several years since river cruising on the Volga. This French itinerary proved to be just as memorable as those and shows why Viking enjoys such loyalty from past cruise guests. 

Cruising the Seine is like floating into a time capsule filled with history and images of life along its shoreline. Viking has positioned four of its vessels for these week-long river forays into the treasures of Normandy. With dozens of the company’s other vessels plying the rivers of Asia, Egypt, Europe, and even America, it’s easy to immerse yourself in the wide world of Viking.

The Roster of New 2024 River Ships

This year, travel advisors will find a generous number of new river ships plying the waterways of Europe, Colombia, the U.S. East Coast and Egypt. Here’s a look at the new ships, which offer a diverse array of styles, itineraries and experiences that are sure to appeal to a wide range of clients.

AMAWATERWAYS

The line will begin operating the 60-guest AmaMagdalena in January 2025 on the Magdalena River in Colombia, sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla on two seven-night itineraries. A sister ship, AmaMelodia, will join in June 2025. AmaWaterways also is launching a second ship in Egypt on the Nile River. The 82-passenger AmaLilia will operate 11-night “Secrets of Egypt & the Nile itineraries.” For more on AmaWaterways, turn to page 14.

AMADEUS RIVER CRUISES

The company is unveiling a new generation of vessels featuring technical innovations that it said will set new environmental standards for river cruising with the introduction of Amadeus Nova on Rhine and Danube river itineraries in spring 2024. “The Amadeus Nova is our response to the question of whether you can combine ship comfort with environmental awareness,” said Amadeus Founder Wolfgang Lüftner. The four-deck vessel will be equipped with 12 balcony suites and 67 outside cabins, most of which will boast panoramic windows; wind-protected lounge areas; a café; a heated pool; and a sundeck.

AMERICAN CRUISE LINES

The company, whose vessels solely ply U.S. ports and rivers, will unveil two new Coastal Cats – American Liberty and American Legend – in August and November, respectively. The two ships are the line’s third and fourth Coastal Cats vessels, joining American Eagle and American Glory, which debuted in 2023. The four vessels are deployed on a vast selection of exclusive East Coast itineraries, including the new “Florida Gulf Coast & Keys” sailing roundtrip from St. Petersburg and the “Yankee Seaports” cruise between New York City and Boston. Other itineraries include “Historic South & Golden Isles” sailings between Charleston, S.C. and Amelia Island, Fla., and New England summer voyages.

AVALON WATERWAYS

As press time, the line was set to debut its first river ship offering itineraries on Portugal’s Douro River in April. The new Avalon Alegria will sail on an eight day “Vida Portugal: Vineyards & Villages” itinerary roundtrip from Porto. The vessel, which is Avalon’s 15th European Suite Ship, features 200-square-foot Panorama Suites on two full decks and open-air balconies and beds facing the views. In all, Avalon Alegria will boast 14 Deluxe Staterooms and 37 Panorama Suites. Alegria will also have a pool on the Sky Deck, where guests can take in the stunning scenery.

RIVIERA RIVER CRUISES

Due to increased demand, the company is introducing the 118-passenger MS Porto Mirante, which will offer 10 departures on a new itinerary, the eight-day “Highlights of the Douro Valley and Salamanca” from July to October. The ship will boast 59 cabins, an atrium bar and lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows, a restaurant, a fitness center and a sun deck with a sky lounge bar and splash pool. MS Port Mirante will join MS Douro Elegance and MS Douro Splendour, which ply the waters of the Douro, Porto and Salamanca rivers.

RIVERSIDE LUXURY CRUISES

The line, which operates three of the former Crystal river ships, debuted Riverside Debussy on a five-night cruise from Brussels to Amsterdam on March 23. The ship’s portfolio of sailings include three to seven-night itineraries on the Rhine, Danube and Main rivers, which can be combined into longer cruises, with late or overnight calls in a range of European cities. Riverside Dubussy carries 110 guests in 55 suites and has four gourmet restaurants and seven dining options in all, the Palm Court, the Vista Lounge, a spa and a fitness center. Riverside Mozart entered service in May 2023 and Riverside Ravel in August 2023.

UNIWORLD BOUTIQUE RIVER CRUISES

In March, the luxury line unveiled the S.S. Victoria on a “Holland & Belgium Tulip Time” itinerary. The ship, which carries 110 guests and formerly sailed in the Crystal fleet as Crystal Bach, will also offer an eight-day “Castles Along the Rhine” cruise from Basel to Amsterdam, a 10-day “Magnificent Moselle and Rhine” sailing roundtrip from Frankfurt and an eight-day “Belgium Holiday Markets” voyage roundtrip from Brussels, which will put the spotlight on both renowned and lesser-known Christmas markets. In 2025, Uniworld is scheduled to introduce the S.S. Elisabeth, which formerly sailed as Crystal Mahler.

The company is adding to its Egypt river fleet this year, with the introduction of the 82-passenger Viking Hathor. The vessel will sail on the 12-day “Pharaohs & Pyramids” itinerary, which includes a three-night stay at a first-class hotel in Cairo. Guests then fl y to Luxor to explore the Temple of Luxor and Karnak prior to boarding Viking Hathor for an eight-day Nile cruise, followed by a flight back to Cairo for an overnight stay. Viking Hathor is an identical sister ship to Viking Osiris and Viking Aton and, which debuted in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The Egypt fleet also includes Viking Ra and MS Antares. In 2005, Viking will add a sixth ship, Viking Sobek.

VIVA CRUISES

In September, VIVA Enjoy will make its debut on a 12-night itinerary from Frankfurt to Vienna, with calls at Wertheim, Wurzburg, Nuremberg, Passau and Linz. Following its inaugural cruise, the ship will set sail on eight-day “Charming Danube” itineraries roundtrip from Vienna, followed by Advent and Christmas voyages. VIVA Enjoy has 95 cabins including eight suites and three restaurants. In all, VIVA Cruises will offer 85 different itineraries and upward of 280 sailings on eight vessels. VIVA Enjoy’s debut follows the introduction of VIVA One and VIVA Two in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
