SAMTENGANG TREK DETAILED ITINERARY

DAY 01: ARRIVE PARO, PARO – THIMPHU The flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular mountain flights in the world, with a constantly changing panorama of some of the highest mountains on earth. Our Bhutan Travel Bureau representative will meet you at Paro airport. After lunch enjoy afternoon sightseeing around Paro, including a visit to the National Museum, Ta Dzong. This museum houses many religious relics, works of art and handicrafts offering a great orientation into Bhutan’s historical, cultural, and religious past. Next, visit the Rimpong Dzong to see the painting of the great saint Milarepa, considered as the master of meditation by the Bhutanese and believed to have attained enlightenment in a lifetime. Dzong’s are large monasteries and district administrative centres, which were once strategic forts. Afterwards, transfer for Thimphu for overnight (1.5 hours).

DAY 02: THIMPHU Enjoy a full day of sightseeing beginning with a visit to the National Memorial Chorten depicting the Buddhist faith in the form of paintings and statues. This temple was first initiated by the Third King as a protection from the negative elements of modernization. The Royal Queen Mother completed it as a memorial stupa for the third King who passed away in the year 1972.

Other highlights include the 12th Century Changangkha Temple, Drubthob monastery housing the Zilukha nunnery, the School for Arts and Crafts where the students are taught to master the 13 types of Bhutanese art, the National Library housing a collection of Bhutanese scriptures dating back to the 8th century, and a fascinating replica of a medieval farmhouse at the Folk Heritage Museum. If there is time, you may also visit the nursing pen for the Takin, the national animal of Bhutan and Tashichhodzong. ‘the fortress of the glorious religion’. Initially built in 1641 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it was rebuilt in the 1960s during the reign of Bhutan’s third king in the traditional style, without plans or nails. Tashichhodzong houses government ministries, His Majesty’s secretariat, and the central monk body. Overnight at your hotel in Thimphu.

DAY 03: THIMPHU – PUNAKHA Drive over the Dochu-La pass (3,100 meters), which on a clear day offers an incredible view of Himalayan peaks before descending into balmy Punakha valley (about 3 hrs total driving time). The drive through the countryside affords a glimpse of everyday life in this most remote of Himalayan kingdoms. In the Dochu-La area there are vast Rhododendron forests that grow to tree size and bloom in late April/early May covering the mountains in a riot of glorious spring colour.

Punakha was the ancient capital of Bhutan. On arrival, visit Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 by the Shabdrung, the ‘Unifier of Bhutan’ as predicted by the great Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava). It is situated at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu (Mother and Father Rivers) and is the winter headquarters of the Je Khenpo and hundreds of monks who move en masse from Thimphu to this warmer location. The three story main temple of the Punakha Dzong is a breathtaking example of traditional architecture with four intricately embossed entrance pillars crafted from cypress and decorated in gold and silver.

After lunch, enjoy a walk to Chimi Lhakhang, temple of the Drukpa Kuenly who is also known as the Divine Madman. He inherited the Divine Madman title since he revolted against the orthodox Buddhism in his time. He taught the people that religion is an inner feeling and it’s not necessary that one should be an ordained monk. He is also considered a symbol of fertility and most childless couples go to his temple for blessing. Overnight at your hotel in Punakha.

DAY 04: PUNAKHA – LIMBUKHA (9km, 4 hours. 940m ascent) The trek starts upstream from the Punakha Dzong, over the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan (180m) across the Pho Chhu. Climb gently on the left side of the Po Chhu through terraced field of mustard and winter wheat. The Punakha valley is low enough to enable two harvests, so there is plenty of activity in the field in the winter months. The valley also produces fruits such as bananas and oranges.

After about a 2.5hr hike uphill through pine forest, fern, oak and some rhododendron, there is a nice clearing for lunch with a big prayer flag and a beautiful view over the valley. In the far distance the huge chorten, Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal, can be seen. Looking to the west the road to Dochu La can be partly traced, and if lucky some snowy peaks maybe visible: Jumolhari, kang Bum and Tiger mountain. A chorten and some prayer flags on the skyline at 2200m indicate the end of today’s climb. From the chorten you can see towards Wangdi and Limbukha where our campsite (2220m) is located just behind the village on a beautiful green area (1.5hr).

Limbukha has several large old houses. Some people say that this place, at the upper end of a watershed, used to be a lake. The inhabitants perform a special annual ceremony in connection with the lake, when they begin to irrigate the fields. In former times a king lived here.

DAY 05: LIMBUKHA – CHUNGSAKHA (10km, 4 hours. 375m ascent, 745m decent) Leaving camp climbs steeply (150m) up to a small ridge (2370m) through a cold dense forest, from which today’s climb is visible. Cross this ridge, and descend steeply into a small side valley where a small stream (2235m) is crossed. Surrounded by beautiful birdsong and oak and rhododendrons forest, follow an unclear trail covered by slippery leaves.

After about 2hrs of climbing reach a small pass, Dochen La (82645m) littered with prayer flags and possibly a good view towards Dochu La, Jumolhari, Kang Bum, Tiger Mountain, as well as Talo Lhakhang and Nobgang Lhakhang down in the valley. After the pass a steep steady descent follows along a forest trail. The forest opens up after reaching Dagegon with a beautiful big old farmhouse. In the distance a ridge with Samtengang village and Chhuni Gompa can be seen. Walk alongside Dargyel Gompa, an old monastery of Drukpa Kinley, the` Divine Mad Madman’, whose teaching methods often shocked monks and lay people. On the hillside above the monastery are several small meditations cells.

At 1850m Chungsakha (Chhungsekha) is reached. The village has one lhakhang with a simple but atmospheric chapel on the first floor. The monastery has a festival every three years with masked dances and singing. The campsite is in front of the Lhakhang.

DAY 06: CHUNGSAKHA – SAMTENGANG (4km, 2.5-3 hours. 550m ascent, 350m decent) Descend to the road in 45min and find a suspension bridge crossing the Bae Chhu 1500m. The trail from here is clear, and moderately steep passing through several villages. The trail goes through small deeply eroded gorges, which will be very slippery in the rain. In December, the daphne flower is already starting to flower.

The climb is finished for the day when you pass Samtengang High School (established 1952) on your right. Walk through a narrow gorge to the other side at 2000m and look down towards a holy lake, Lutshokha (Tsho Shokha). Afterwards continue on to the campsite, located on the other side of the lake and other 20min beyond it. It is a beautiful flat campsite (2050m) in the forest below the village of Samtengang.

After lunch there will be plenty of time either to visit Samtengang or stay in camp and enjoy the fresh wind blowing through the pines. There is a wonderful trail climbing up to Samtengang Village. The local Lhakhang is Gonjo Lhakhang, and there is another one 2hrs above the village.

Samtengang is mentioned again and again in old literature regarding travelling/exploring/plant hunting in Bhutan. It was the old stopping place on the first day out from Wangdi for people travelling east-west (and vice versa). The booklet ‘The Ballad of Pemi Tshewang Tashi: A Wind Borne Feather’ by Karma Ura will tell you more about the history of the area.

DAY 07: SAMTENGANG – BRIDGE AT TIKA ZAM/CHHUZOMSA (1.5-2km, 3 hours. 495m decent) Starting near camp, the trail today is steep and challenging. It passes through endless agricultural fields, heading into the valley of the Dang Chhu. The road will be reached next to the bridge at Tika Zam (5100ft/1555m). Overnight at a hotel in Wangdue.

DAY 08: WANGDUE – PARO This morning visit Wangduephodrang Dzong. Built in 1639 the strategically located Dzong is perched on a spur at the confluence of two rivers. In the 17th century Wangduephodrang played a critical role in unifying the western, central and southern regions of the country. Drive back to Thimphu where you will enjoy lunch and have an opportunity to visit handicraft and souvenir stores. Afterwards proceed to Paro. On arrival in Paro, check into the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 09: PARO After breakfast hike to Taktsang Monastery. The trail is broad and the walk of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours uphill takes you high above the Paro valley. The view of Taktsang Monastery built on a sheer cliff face 900 metres above the valley floor is a spectacular sight. The Monastery is also an important pilgrim site for the Buddhists. According to legend, great Guru Rimpoche and his consort meditated in a cave here for three months when he brought the teachings of the Buddhist Dharma to Bhutan in the 8th Century. After meditation, they manifested themselves in the forms of Guru Dorji Drolo and a tigress to subdue demons in the valley below. The cave, where the monastery was later built is said to be the origin of Buddhism in Bhutan. Nearby there is a teahouse where you can stop for refreshments before returning to Paro for lunch. Nearby there is a teahouse where you can stop for refreshments before returning to Paro for lunch. In the afternoon drive to the almost fully reconstructed Drukgyel Dzong.  The original monument (destroyed by fire in 1951)  was built by Shabdrung to commemorate his victory against invading Tibetans in 1644.  In fine weather the towering peak of the sacred Mount Jomolhari (7314m) appears as a stunning backdrop. On the return drive to Paro, visit other sights in Paro valley. Overnight at your hotel in Paro.

DAY 10: DEPART PARO Breakfast in the hotel, then drive to the airport for flight to your onward destination. Tashi Delek!

Samtengang Trek

Customize Your Trip

The Samtengang Trek is a four-day journey from Punakha to Wangduephodrang Dzongkhag in Bhutan. It’s considered one of the easier treks in Bhutan, with an altitude ranging from 1,100–1,900 meters and a warm climate. The trek is also good for beginners and explores remote villages, forests, and historical sites.

The Samtengang Winter Trek is considered one of the best trek routes for winter, with the best times to trek being December to February, March to May, and September to November.

As you fly in, the mountains and valleys of the Land of Thunder Dragon will greet you. We hope that you have seen Mt. Everest below while entering the Bhutanese aerospace.

As soon as you exit out of the airport terminal, our guide will greet you in traditional Bhutanese way, by offering you a silken scarf. He/she, with our driver, will drive to towards hotel. Your hotel is located on hilltop. From there you will have a panoramic view of Paro valley and the Dzong and other signature monuments.

If you feel good, not suffering from jetlag, then we will take you to the town. Walking through the quiet and sleepy Paro town will make you feel that you really are in different universe.

Accommodation: Hotel

Today, we will first visit Ta-Dzong (Watch Tower), now the national museum of the country. The shift in role from defensive to that of a museum having varied collections of ancient armour, antique, thangka (tapestry) and natural in itself represent the transition the country had undergone. Later, visit Rinpung Dzong, located on a hilltop just below the museum. We believed that the dzong was built on a heap of jewel in 15 th  century. Today, the dzong houses the district administration office and district monk bodies.

In the afternoon, drive to Drukgyal Dzong, the fort of victorious Bhutan built in 1649 after the victory over Tibetan Invasions. On the way back, visit traditional Bhutanese farm houses. Then, we will visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in the country built in 7 th  century by Tibetan Buddhist King, Songtsen Gampo.

You may ramble through the town in the evening.

After breakfast,  we will leave for Thimphu via idyllic countryside, through villages and paddy fields, along the banks of Pachhu and Wangchhu. We will stop for a brief while at Ta Chog Monastery on the way.

In the afternoon visit Tashichhodzong, the custodian of Throne Room, seat of the government and the chief abbot of the Central Monastic Body.  It is the signature monument of Bhutan.

We will then visit the National Memorial Chorten which was built in memory of His Majesty the Third King of Bhutan. After that, we will drop in the National Handicrafts Emporium where traditional crafts are displayed. Just below the town, you may also catch a game of archery in progress at the Changlinmethang ground.

In the evening, you can take leisure walk in the town.

Accommodation: Hotel

Today, we will travel towards Punakha via Dochula Pass at 3, 100m. Under a clear sky, the pass offers spectacular view of the Himalayan peaks. You may also see Gasa Dzong, the Dzong which has close proximity to Tibet.

You will be served lunch will as soon as you reach Khuruthang in Punakha. Next, we will take you to see the majestic Punakha Dzong that stands tall at the confluence of two rivers. This dzong is said to be a replica of a fortress in the paradise. It was built by Zhabdrung Rinpoche in 17 th  century and for hundreds of years, the dzong served as the capital of the Bhutan.

Right after breakfast, we will drive towards the road-end point. From there, our trek will begin with a gradual climb through chirpine forests. Unlike other places in western Bhutan, Punakha is warmer and thus, as we walk through, you will find so many trees that usually grow in sub-tropical forests.

On the way, we will get to visit Dompala, a beautiful village alongside the trail.

We will spend out night in tents pitched at Limukha

We will again resume our trekking right after breakfast. The trail will not take us through the sudden ascents and descents.

En route, you will pass by Chime Lhakhang, the fertility temple. This temple was built in 16 th  century by a highly revered yogi who used to be known as the Divine Madman. It is believed that he subdued a dreaded demon with his burning manhood. Every day, many childless couples visit to seek the blessing of a child from this temple.

Covering about 14km in 5to 6 hours, today’s trail takes you through rhododendron and oak forests.

We will camp at Chungsakha and spend the night there.

Today’s trek is not too long. It is about 5 hours and we will have to cover about 13 km. thus, we will move slowly taking photographs and seeing the views. We will be traveling through Sha valley, under Wangdue Phodrang District.

We will call it a day at Samtengang.

We will resume our journey right after breakfast.

The trail will lead us up to road head. From there, we will be driven till Wangdue Phodrang where hot lunch will be waiting for us the Guest House. After lunch, we will be travelling to Thimphu. En route, visit Druk Wangyel monastery at Dochula Pass, the only of its kind in the country with elaborate paintings depicting the lineage of Wangchuck Monarch’s  and their contributions. There are also 108 victory stupas.

After recess, we will continue our journey to Thimphu and check into hotel on arrival.

Accommodation: Hotel

Visit Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fort in the country, built in 1629. The dzong was built by Zhabdrung Rinpoche after having subdued a demon at the very place where the dzong stands.

Our next visit will be at the National Wood Craft Centre and the Institute for Traditional Arts and Crafts and Takin Park.

Start planning your tailor-made Dream Holiday to Bhutan – The Land of happiness!

In order to experience the best and rewarding fulfillment clients must plan in advance the different logistics that you have in your minds before actually venturing into the world of trips. You might have wishes and hopes for which you need to plan.

The following information will help you to plan your dream trip to Bhutan.

1. When and how to visit Bhutan?

Choose your traveling date like Arrival/Departure date. You also need to choose entry/depart Bhutan via AIR or LAND.

By Air: Druk Air, the national carriers is the only service operator in the kingdom and operates several flights per week from Bangkok (Thailand), Delhi & Kolkata (India) and Kathmandu (Nepal) to Paro (Bhutan). The Paro International Airport is located about an hour and a half drive from Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan.

Paro airport is daylight restricted, and the flights are totally dependent on the weather. As a result, sometimes flights are delayed. It is therefore a good idea to keep at least 24 hours of transit time for connecting flights out of Paro. You might also want to consider traveling on a non-restricted ticket so that if you miss a connecting flight, you can be rerouted or seated on the first available carrier.

Sometimes flights into Paro are disrupted because of unfavorable weather conditions. If this occurs, the flight will stop for the night at the transit airport. To be prepared, you may want to carry your essential personal items in your carry-on luggage.

samtengang trek

Samtengang Winter Trek

  • Altitude: 1100 – 1900 mts
  • Best Season: March to April and September to October

This four day trek is a short and pleasant journey from Punakha to Wangduephodrang Dzongkhag. It is a fairly easy trek as the altitude only ranges between 1100-1900m and the climate is warm throughout the hike.

The path takes you through forests of rhododendron and oak, through the villages of Sha and Chungsakha and across the longest foot bridge in Bhutan. While this trek is available throughout the winter the best times to embark on it are between March-April and September and October. The trail is approximately 54km in length.

The 4 Day Samtengang Winter Trek:

Day 1: Punakha – Limukha Distance 12 km, 4 hours, 880 m ascent, camp altitude 1,980 m.

After passing majestic Punakha Dzong you cross a footbridge over the Pho Chhu and walk up to Shengana. This is the longest bridge in Bhutan. You then climb gradually through the forest until you reach Limukha. Make sure you are carrying enough water as you won’t find any on the way to Limukha.

Day 2: Limukha – Chhungsakha Distance 14 km, 5 hours, 430 m descent, camp altitude 1,550 m.

The path leads through rhododendron and oak forests to Chhungsakha. Chungsakha is a small village of about 10 houses. You’ll find a holy stone and an impressive Cyprus tree here that are reminders of Drukpa Kuenley, the “divine madman”.

Day 3: Chhungsakha – Samtengang Distance 13 km, 5 hours, 650 m ascent, 270 m descent, camp altitude 1,830 m.

You walk downhill until you cross Pe Chhu before climbing again through the village of Sha on your way to Samtengang. Near the school in Samtengang you will see a small lake and your campsite is right next to it.

Day 4: Samtengang – Chhuzomsa

Distance 15 km, 5-6 hours, 730 m descent.

The trail leads steeply downhill on a treeless slope to the road head at Chhuzomsa.

Trekking Rates For Bhutan

The government of Bhutan requires that a minimum standard needs to be maintained while trekking in Bhutan. You will be accompanied by your own trekking staff consisting of a professional trekking guide, cook, camping assistant and a few horsemen and horses to carry your gear; regardless of whether you’re a solo trekker or you are a part of a bigger group. All food supplies must be carried in and prepared in camp. Trekking in Bhutan can therefore be a little expensive for solo travelers and those traveling in smaller groups.

TREKKING SURCHAGE PER PERSON ON TOP OF SDF, GUIDE & VEHICLE CHARGES:

1 Pax: USD 250 Per Person Per Day 2 Pax: USD 200 Per Person Per Day 3 Pax: USD 180 Per Person Per Day 4 Pax or More: USD 160 Per Person Per Day

  • 4 season mountaineering tents. (Mountain Hardware Trango ll).
  • Freshly prepared meals with tea and snacks throughout the trek.

  • Sleeping bag and blankets
  • Fully seasoned support team.
  • Portage charges.
  • Filtered/boiled drinking water throughout the trek.
  • Hot washing water in the mornings and evenings.
  • Hot water bags for the night.
  • Individual footprint foam mattress.
  • Communal first aid kit (We always carry multiple oxygen canisters for emergency scenarios).

DOES NOT INCLUDE:

  • Personal snacks, drinks and equipment
  • Gratuity for staff.

A TYPICAL DAY ON THE TREK :

The day starts off with a wake up call, around 6-6:30 am, if you are not already awake by then. A staff will come with a bowl of warm water to wash up along with tea/coffee brought to your tent. Before heading over to the dinning tent for breakfast, usually around 7-8, we suggest you pack your overnight gear into your duffel bag and prepare for the day. During breakfast the staff will pack away the tents and ready the horses.

After breakfast, usually between 8:30-9 am, we start walking.  The pace of the trek is leisurely with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, take photos and explore the local settlements, if any. Lunch will be around noon at a favourable spot by the side of the trail. Lunch is carried by the staff.

There is usually more walking after lunch, we will always plan to cover big ascents/passes before lunch but this does not always pan out as expected. Normally we will get into camp by mid afternoon with the tents already set up by the support team. Once you arrive at camp, you will be able to wash up, change to get into your comfy camp clothes and try and get comfortable.

Tea and snacks will be served. Followed by dinner later in the evening around 7pm.

All meals are freshly prepared by our cook and kitchen team. Breakfast with fried rice, toast/pancakes with various condiments, omelettes and a range of hot drinks. Hot lunch is prepared by the kitchen crew during breakfast and packed into containers carried by the staff to be eaten on the trail. On arrival at the campsite, there will be tea and other hot drinks in the dining tent with biscuits and snacks, help yourselves. Dinner will follow with soup, meal and dessert.

ACUTE MOUNTAIN SICKNESS (AMS).

This happens due to the body’s reaction to the low air pressure (less oxygen) at high altitudes and each individual responds to this situation differently. So please ascent at your own steady pace so that you allow your body to acclimate as you gain elevation.

This is a problem for some people, especially when hiking and sleeping above 3500 meters. The onset of symptoms has no logic in the sense that you never know who will get it regardless of your previous climbs and high ascents. There is no natural way to avoid getting AMS. However, acclimatization before the trek (we recommend day hikes, climbing high and sleeping low) and staying hydrated, eating and sleeping (rest) well on the trek goes a long to keeping yourself fit and feeling good.

Usually a steady and throbbing headache at the back of your head is a telltale sign of the onset of AMS. But this is not a major concern if it does not develop further and persists. Other symptoms include: fatigue, shortness of breathe, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping and vomiting. There is no treatment to this sickness other than letting the body rest, acclimate and cure itself. If the symptoms do not get better, we will descend in altitude.

PACKING LIST AND TIPS :

They say we pack our fears when we travel and thus all of us pack different and are each their own creatures of comfort. But the rule of thumb on treks is to keep it to the essentials and be organized.

Less things to pack in the morning means, being swift and at ease which translates to a few more cups of coffee while enjoying the morning sun.

Therefore only listing the essentials here.

THE ESSENTIALS

  • DAS BOOT : Your favourite hiking boot or shoe. One that is broken in and kept you on the trail, blister free, while hitting the gnarly stuff. A pair with good ankle support that breathes well and to a certain extent is water resistant, keeps your feet happy!
  • THE FART SACK : I mean the sleeping bag. Check where and when you are going and take something that is rated lower by 5ºC than the expected temperature, just be on the warmer and safer side. Women typical tend to sleep colder than men.
  • MATTRESS: A foldable and comfortable mat, ideally an inflatable mattress. After a long day, you just want some good sleep. One that can be packed away inside your duffle bag or secured on the outside with the straps (easier for us to stow away and load it onto the horses). We will provide a footprint foam mat.
  • DAY PACK : Just like your boots, a backpack is something you wear almost throughout the day and the entirety of your trek. So take a pack that you are comfortable with. A 20-30 L pack is ideal, depending on the gear you carrying.
  • CLOTHING : Apart from the clothes you are comfortable with, a rain jacket or a poncho that can double up as a windbreaker, is indispensable. Micro climates in the mountains are an enigma. So its always nice to be prepared, that way the rain doesn’t feel so bad and you can slog on with a grin on your face. Another essential is a down jacket, to throw over yourself while at camp after the sun goes down.
  • MEDICATION : Please don’t forget you personal medication . Also a small personal first aid kit. You may never need them, but it can prove to be crucial for your wellbeing incase you do while on the trail. We will also have a common first aid with only the essential medicine and kit.
  • HEADLAMPS/TORCH:
  • GLOVES & BEANIES
  • SUNSCREEN, SUN GLASSES AND HAT
  • WATER BOTTLES
  • A PACKABLE PILLOW

Accommodation: Hoptel

Accommodation: Hotel
