Seagulls and squadrons of brown pelicans flew alongside my rented Hyundai as I drove across the astonishing seven-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 1 that runs across Moser Sound, just south of Marathon, in the Florida Keys. The proximity of birds and water blurred the distinctions between sea and sky, drive and flight.

The string of coral islands that arc from the Florida peninsula south toward Havana has a long history of attracting pirates, profiteers and seekers of a Caribbean lifestyle within the United States. Henry Flagler, an early developer of the Florida Keys, inadvertently gave the country one of its most scenic roadways when his Overseas Railway, running from mainland Florida down to Key West, was destroyed in a 1935 hurricane. That land route eventually became the Overseas Highway, or U.S. 1, vaulting across channels, and linking 44 islands, via 42 bridges.

I first drove the route with my sister in the early 1990s with a beer-filled cooler, tanning ambitions and the kind of dropout, sunbaked attitude that still drives the party crowd to the Keys, particularly Key West. The distractions along the way haven’t changed much. Local police and sheriff’s vehicles are still parked on the sides of the highway, jittery reminders that speed limits are strictly enforced. Cyclists share narrow shoulders over the 113-mile route from Key Largo to Key West. Manatee-shaped mailboxes, fishing marinas and seafood shacks proliferate. But most distracting are the views themselves, with the sparkling Atlantic to the left and the aquamarine Gulf of Mexico to the right as the road skips across scores of breezy, swim-inviting straits.

Over the course of repeated trips, I’ve come to appreciate the nature and wildlife of the Keys, home to endangered Key deer, mangrove forests and the only living barrier reef off the continental United States.

Hurricane Irma, which struck in September 2017 with Category-4 fury, threatened the delicate balance by which so many humans and animals exist amid the mangroves and bays. In November — 14 months and much cleanup later — I drove the route to assess the scars as well as the renewal, from recently opened (or about to open) resorts to a new coterie of mermaids.

Below is a guide to this classic coastal road trip. You could drive it in a single afternoon, but you won’t want to. Three languid days is more like it.

From the rental car center at Miami International Airport, it’s just over an hour’s drive on mostly suburban highways to the Everglades bogs that edge Key Largo, the northernmost Key and the first to introduce visitors to both the natural attractions of the islands and Keys kitsch. At Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park , I stretched my legs in a native hardwood forest alongside bird-watchers who could identify a palm warbler just by its call, before hitting the bustling Fish House restaurant trimmed in strings of tiki- and flamingo-shaped lights.

Its proximity to Miami has made 18-mile-long Key Largo — a place where thick foliage obscures the water from the T-shirt and shell shops — attractive to developers eager to lure those who may not want to drive any farther down the highway.

“South Florida traffic is our bread and butter year-round,” said Herbert Spiegel, a consultant for the new Bungalows Key Largo , as he guided a tour of one of the island’s newest resorts, with its fleet of electric boats, a Himalayan salt room in the spa, four restaurants and bars, and an adults-only policy. “Florida is all about kids,” he added. “This is something different.” (And it doesn’t come cheap: all-inclusive rates at the resort, which opens this month, start at $1,300 per night, per couple).

Like the nearby Playa Largo Resort & Spa , the 135-cottage resort replaces a former R.V. campground, a trend that is nudging Key Largo upscale. But as the first stop nearest to the reef, it still attracts divers and ocean lovers across the economic spectrum to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , where snorkeling tours explore the vibrant corals and the tropical fish they support in 70-square-miles of protected waters.

The everyday — in the form of schools, grocery stores and one very large Starbucks — mingled with signs for bird sanctuaries and state parks over the next 20 tropical miles from Key Largo to Islamorada. Spread across six lush islands, the community has an old-money heritage and a reputation as the sport fishing capital of the Keys, both of which came together in the bonefishing tournament that the late President George H.W. Bush ran for a decade from Cheeca Lodge & Spa , a vintage property with roots that go back to 1946. It’s no wonder the recent Netflix series “Bloodline,” a dark story built around a prominent Keys family, was based in affluent Islamorada.

The fictional Rayburn House inn from that series is the actual Blue Charlotte villa at the Moorings Village , where 18 rental cottages, some dating back to the mid-1930s, occupy a former coconut plantation. The hurricane denuded the property and killed its signature palm tree that bowed over the water.

“Not a blade of grass was left,” said Debbie Pribyl, the general manager of the Moorings, where the cottages have all been reroofed and the landscaping replanted. On this November day, three fashion photography crews were using the beach as a backdrop. “We got more sand than we started with.”

That ocean-side beach is private, but the two restaurants that the resort runs on the Gulf side aren’t. The casual Morada Bay Beach Cafe and the more refined Pierre’s draw nightly sunset crowds to tables set in the sand near speakers disguised to look like coral rocks emitting samba music as twilight paddleboarders stroke by.

Modest roadside inns, including the newly rebuilt Pines & Palms Resort with apartment-like rooms, eclectic restaurants like Midway Café and an arts district with a brewery and galleries contribute to Islamorada’s bohemian character. A new self-guided tour available via a free cellphone app from the history museum Florida Keys History & Discovery Center introduces hurricanes, pirates and island pioneers, winding up back at Cheeca Lodge where many of these original “Conchs” were buried.

To delve deepest into Keys history, Brad Bertelli, the curator of the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center told me, travelers have to leave the road at Islamorada, and become waterborne.

He and I launched rental kayaks from Robbie’s marina in Islamorada, a popular stop for feeding tarpon the size of teenagers, and headed for the offshore Indian Key Historic State Park . The 11-acre, mangrove-fringed island, with a shady tamarind grove and spiky sisal plants bordering the paths, holds the remains of a 19th-century wrecking village devoted to salvaging goods from ships that ran aground on the reef.

I n the 1830s, Indian Key was the seat of Dade County, site of a bowling alley and an inn promising “one of the most favorable situations in the United States for persons who are suffering from pulmonary, dyspeptic and numerous chronic diseases, and obliged to seek refuge from the chill blasts of a northern winter,” according to a sign posted on the site. Prominent Keys travelers, including the ornithologist John James Audubon, passed through.

“Wreckers were thought of as the pirates of the day,” said Mr. Bertelli, looking the part with a bandana tied around his head. “Like used car salesmen, there were some bad apples.”

Today, the ghost of its town square is a large field surrounded by rock foundations of storehouses, cisterns and homes, eventually abandoned after the Second Seminole War in 1842. A three-story observation tower offers views to distant Alligator Lighthouse, marking the reef where the wreckers plied their trade , and, in the opposite direction, Lower Matacumbe Key, the source of fresh water, which allowed the island to flourish.

Middle Keys

Another 30 miles south, past innumerable cormorants perching on power lines, and you enter another world. Lobster traps line the street to Keys Fisheries in Marathon, a commercial marina harboring fishing boats and pleasure sailboats, and a dockside restaurant where baby nurse sharks school in the shallows, waiting for scraps. The restaurant is an apt introduction to the working heartland of the Keys. Here, locals and those just passing through put in orders for lobster Reubens under superhero pseudonyms and wait to hear, “Captain Marvel, your order is ready.”

Commerce mingles with conservation in Marathon, home to two nonprofit marine attractions, the Dolphin Research Center and the Turtle Hospital . Both fund their operations largely through visitor tours.

Beach Resort

Housed in a former motel painted sea green, the Turtle Hospital treats animals that are rehabilitating after swallowing so much plastic they can’t submerge, or have tumors growing around their eyes, a condition linked to water quality. Visitors see the operating room, the research lab and tanks filled with turtles ranging from hatchlings to 300-pound adults.

“It’s a very exciting time to be in sea turtle medicine,” said Bette Zirkelbach, the energetic manager of the Turtle Hospital on a tour, as she described a pioneering study in the lab on blood turtle types.

Nature-based tourism isn’t new to the Keys — snorkeling, diving and bird-watching are popular throughout the islands and, as I drove, a radio news broadcast urged listeners to use the “I Spy a Manatee” mobile app to both identify the animals’ locations and encourage safe boating around the slow-moving creatures. But getting travelers out of motorized fishing boats and into kayaks is relatively new on Marathon, where Miranda Murphy and Steve Tomek run three-year-old AquaVentures , which offers guided kayak tours in the tangled mangrove channels at Curry Hammock State Park.

As a naturalist, Ms. Murphy treats the waterways like living aquariums, pointing out schools of baby snapper and using a net to pull up starfish and jellyfish that illustrate the role of mangroves as nurseries of the sea. “It’s like a touch tank in the wild,” she said.

In March, AquaVentures will move its base of operations to the new 24-acre Isla Bella Beach Resort . Kayak tours of the mangrove tunnels in nearby Boot Key will take off from a canal at the resort where, on my visit, six manatees spent hours in the warm shallows.

Bahia Honda

Seven Mile Bridge is the largest span in the Keys, and so exhilarating to cross that I returned another day to experience the drive in the blush light of dawn. It separates the Middle from the Lower Keys, and more commercial islands from some less developed ones, beginning with Bahia Honda Key, home to Bahia Honda State Park .

Beheaded palm trees and white sand beaches shorn of their shady sea grape trees testify to Bahia Honda’s location near the eye of Irma. This fall, one of its beaches reopened and snorkelers were trolling the shallows, but its popular Sandspur Beach, once lined with sea grapes decorated by visitors in seashells and driftwood, remains closed. Still, from the top of the old Bahia Honda Bridge, part of the original railway, there are hypnotic views across a 30-foot-deep channel that represented one of the most challenging to track-builders, sometimes limited by the tides to two 45-minute shifts a day.

Big Pine Key

Six miles west, much of Big Pine Key and neighboring No Name Key comprise the National Key Deer Refuge established in 1957 to protect the dwarf Key deer, an endangered subspecies of the North American white-tailed deer that grows just three feet tall. At the refuge visitors’ center, in a strip mall where a pair of free-ranging roosters foraged the parking lot, volunteers told tales of deer showing up beside a Winn Dixie grocery store dumpster, and extolled the resilience of the herd, which is now estimated to have between 500 and 800 deer. Many of the mangrove areas that edge their habitat remain barren after Irma.

Here, I met Bill Keogh, the easygoing owner of Big Pine Kayak Adventures , who guides paddling trips from Big Pine Key to the “backcountry,” a largely protected region of undeveloped mangrove islands. He still sees baby stingrays, snappers and sharks and, post-storm, a preponderance of lobsters on mangrove island fragments dispersed by the hurricane . “It’s the same biomass out there,” he said, “but it’s concentrated in new real estate.”

Leaving him at sunset, I crossed a bridge to No Name Key to look for deer, which I found not only there — collie-sized critters galloping across the sandy road — but, on my return to the highway, where I stopped to watch an elfin stag, doe and fawn grazing a town lawn.

Stock Island

After 25 quiet miles crossing calm bays with views to distant patches of mangrove isles, I reached the outskirts of the city of Key West on Stock Island, a traditionally blue-collar refuge for shrimpers, commercial fishermen and tourism industry employees. With its mobile homes and canals moored with houseboats, it retains a grittiness that its more manicured neighbor, the island of Key West, has largely lost. But it, too, is experiencing development, now mingling marinas, newly paved streets and bushy bougainvillea with a pair of new resorts including the Perry Hotel Key West .

With art installations made of propellers, the 100-room hotel facing a recreational marina nods to the shrimp-trawling boats across the channel. Its main restaurant, Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen & Bar, has become a dining destination for upscale versions of local seafood, such as black grouper with cornbread gnudi and crawfish-thyme butter, recommended by my Russian waitress who said she came to the Keys on vacation and has stayed seven years.

“The islands got me,” she laughed.

The next day, the Perry’s free 15-minute shuttle dropped me in teeming downtown, tourist-thronged Key West, the end of U.S. 1 and home to harbor-front bars and souvenir shops with a prevalence of mermaid ornaments, statues and paintings. In this setting, the Captain’s Mermaid boutique owned by Kristiann Mills, a native Conch who identifies as a mermaid, is a tranquil, if glittery, refuge. She explained that many of her mermaid “pod” teach “mermaiding,” or swimming in a long tailfin , and that she is launching the first Key West Mermaid Festival , July 5 to 7, to draw attention to conservation.

“We’re a little angry the ocean’s being polluted and we’re coming on land to tell you about it,” said Ms. Mills, with the warm smile and flowing hair you might expect of a mermaid.

Home of the Conch Republic, which tried to secede from the union in 1982, Key West has long attracted nonconformists, artists and especially writers, from Ernest Hemingway — whose former house-turned-museum is famously filled with descendants of his six-toed cat Snow White — to Judy Blume, who co-founded Books & Books @ the Studios of Key West , a bookstore within a nonprofit gallery just blocks from the bar-lined Duval Street.

“Duval is a tiny Bourbon Street,” said Shannon McRae, the general manager of Key West Food Tours , over a Hemingway daiquiri off Duval on her company’s new Craft Cocktail Crawl. The three-hour tour visits dives as well as chic lounges. “We want to surprise you and let you drink like a local.”

Around the corner, selfie-takers lined up at an oversize buoy marking the Southernmost Point of the continental United States, painted with an arrow indicating “90 miles to Cuba.” Many came from cruise ships to get their Instagram shot. Cruise traffic is growing on Key West, where 405 calls are expected in 2019 versus 307 in 2016.

Many ships sail out before sunset, which is a shame as sundown cues a carnivalesque celebration nightly at seafront Mallory Square that’s both a tribute to nature and a showcase for quirky characters who make their living in Key West. At one end of the seafront strip, I watched a ringmaster run house cats through hoops like circus felines ; on the other end a contortionist quipped, in the outsider’s humor so common to the Keys, “I call this an economic recovery. It’s an illusion.”

2. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Saying goodbye to NYC doesn’t have to be hard as our next stop brings us more grit and Philly cheesesteaks than we can handle in Philadelphia; Pennsylvania’s largest city. As one of America’s great eastern cities, Philadelphia is of course out and proud when it comes to LGBTQ visibility. Founded on the principles of equality and freedom of expression and now known as the ‘City of Brotherly Love’, gay Philadelphia is particularly welcoming, no more so than within its central gaybourhood between 11 th and Broad from Chestnut to Pine Street. Here you’ll find a leafy district with cobblestone streets and brick townhouses hosting a range of gay-friendly venues such as bookstores, cafes, bars and clubs, many of which are involved in the annual global Equality Forum and ongoing LGBTQ+ activism.

Outside of the gay district, art and culture lovers are catered for at various museums, galleries and music venues, particularly along the Avenue of the Arts with its array of dining and entertainments as well as the notable Philadelphia Art Museum which holds one of the largest collections in the US . Chow down of hoagies, scrapple, soft pretzels and, yes, cheesesteaks until your arteries complain, finishing up with some constitutional history at the Independence Hall and costumed re-enactments around the Liberty Bell. Continuing southbound, we skip state lines from Pennsylvania into Maryland and wind up in Baltimore, one of the top East Coast vacation spots for its diverse neighbourhoods laid out around a historic harbourside

3. Baltimore, Maryland

Philadelphia > Baltimore – 160 km; 1hr 55 mins (via I-95 S)

Continuing southbound, we skip state lines from Pennsylvania into Maryland and wind up in Baltimore, one of the top East Coast vacation spots for its diverse neighbourhoods laid out around a historic harbourside. The colours here come as fresh as the seafood, jointly showcased at the famous crab market in the city centre. Though the Inner Harbour can keep you busy peeling shellfish, the city’s USS Constellation, National Aquarium and Maryland Science Centre can ensure you’ll learn something too. The Civil War nerds among you will also be pleased to hear that there are as many as 15 maritime museums in the area, while art and literature lovers can split their time between Baltimore Museum of Art, American Visionary Art Museum and Edgar Allen Poe House & Museum.

Founded in 1729, Baltimore’s history is just as easy to discover out on the streets, across charming neighbourhoods and landmarks such as at the Fort McHenry National Monument, as well as on match days when support for the long-running baseball and football teams can also be considered a historical activity. Before the day ends and the party begins, join sunset seekers at the top of Federal Hill where the best skyline views take precedence. A major stopping point on any East Coast America itinerary is to the US capital and independent state of Washington D.C. While you might associate D.C. with political stuffiness and suits, the city actually has a lot more texture, made interesting through fabulous nightlife opportunities and a diverse crowd. Before sundown, make a point of ticking off the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and Vietnam War Memorial, moving onto the Smithsonian Museums for air and space technology and the National Archives for a glimpse at the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution. From there, you’ve still got the US Capitol building to behold, as well as the Kennedy Performing Arts Centre which takes over a prime piece of riverside opposite Theodore Roosevelt Island.

After taking in a hefty amount of neoclassical architecture around the city, the city’s visitors and its thirsty government workers call loudly for decent food and alcohol. DC gladly complies, offering a thriving dining and bar scene that is wholly bipartisan when it comes to fun. To find like-minded souls, head either to the new gay neighbourhood of Logan Circle or to the long-standing Dupont Circle on 17 th Street, two areas ever-alive with LGBT bars, eateries and other gay-owned businesses, particularly around June and October when Capital Pride and Dupont Circle High Heel Race respectively take over. A new day on the road, a new state to see; this time it’s Virginia, the south-eastern state that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Appalachian Mountains in the west

5. Richmond, Virginia

Washington DC > Richmond – 175 km; 2hours (via I-95 S)

A new day on the road, a new state to see; this time it’s Virginia, the south-eastern state that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Appalachian Mountains in the west. Not only is Richmond a significant city within the region, it’s also one of the oldest cities in the US, boasting a treasure trove of historic gems. Home to the White House of the Confederacy during the Civil War and the place where founding father Patrick Henry entreated for liberty or death, Richmond carries some weight. Explore the neighbourhood around Court End to glimpse Federal-style mansions, moving to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and Belle Isle for a touch of classic beauty. Also in the offing is a visit to the Virginia State Capitol and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts where you’ll find yourself among younger crowds than you might have anticipated.

Politically active they may be but the hip young locals of Richmond (many of them students at VCU) also know how to have a good time. The gay scene itself is thinner than in DC but visitors still have a handful of gay bars to choose from and one majority lesbian bar all based in the area around downtown. As the youthful population makes its mark and the LGBT rights movement continues, Richmond can only get gayer. While you’re waiting, tick off all the top things to do in Richmond , snapping photos of all the street art as set up by the Richmond Mural Project.

6. Richmond to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Richmond > Myrtle Beach – 482 km; 5 hours (via I-95 S)

At a journey time of five hours, travelling from Richmond to Myrtle Beach could seem like the waste of a vacation day. On the contrary, however, with so many worthy stop-offs, the trip is a must for all serious East Coast vacations. Two and half hours in, you’ll reach the capital city of Raleigh, North Carolina, a place known for its college life and academic clout, in line with neighbouring cities of Durham and Chapel Hill. While in the vicinity, learn something new at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, get crazy at the Marbles Kids Museum or go highbrow at the North Carolina Museum of Art. For pinnacle architecture in town, pass by the North Carolina State Capitol in all its 19 th century Greek Revival stylings, winding up at Pullen Park for a leisurely sunset thereafter. Other attractions in the area include Fort Bragg military base, Fantasy Lake Water Park, Cape Fear Botanical Garden and the Museum of Cape Fear Historical Complex.

After drooling over Air Force pilots, there’s only one place left to go; gay Myrtle Beach. More than just a fabulous shorefront on the Atlantic, Myrtle Beach is one of South Carolina’s best cities, hosting a number of quaint beach towns and barrier islands on the 96-kilometre coastal stretch from Little River to Georgetown. Popular all year round and especially so in winter, Myrtle Beach is our first taste of southern warmth, allowing for sunbathing, swimming, boating and water sports from here on in. Though the local roads are not the friendliest, the Myrtle Beach gay scene will more than make up for that fact, centred on the beach near 82 nd Avenue North. Besides partying with new friends, be sure to soak up Myrtle’s kitsch fairground vibes at the Family King Amusement Park or on the Skyweel Ferris wheel, overlooking long stretches of beachside boardwalks, green space and a Ripley’s Aquarium to boot. 7. Savannah, Georgia

Myrtle Beach > Charleston – 158.2 km; 1 h 59 min  (via US-17 S)

Charleston > Savannah – 173.6 km; 1 h 54 min (via US-17 S and I-95 S)

Two more East Coast road trip stops come up on the drive from South Carolina to Georgia; first at the old port city of Charleston and second at Savannah, both sure to charm in equal measure. Charleston woos first with horse-drawn carriage rides through cobblestone streets, giving views of Antebellum-style architecture as well as Civil War era builds within the French Quarter. Spend the rest of the day moseying along the water’s edge, passing by Waterfront Park, Battery Promenade and the Fort Sumter National Monument before driving ways out to the grand Boone Hall Plantation. A sassy mix of European styles and Southern charms, Charleston is ever-popular among the gay community, offering up romantic scenes and authentic Lowcountry fare as well as a whole host of other things to do .

Not too dissimilar to Charleston, Savannah also lies along the Atlantic coast with Antebellum aesthetics and horse-drawn carriages centred on a pretty historic district filled with elegant 18th and 19th-century residences. Quintessentially southern oak trees covered in Spanish moss make for the perfect picnic shelter in Forsyth Park, but the town’s endless stream of museums can also keep you busy. Learn of the region’s slave history at Wormsloe Historic Site, Mercer Williams House Museum, Telfair Museums and more, stopping by haunted graveyards and Civil War sites for added emphasis. While there is no official gay neighbourhood in Savannah, the whole town has an inclusive vibe, best demonstrated on River Street where the majority of gay-owned boutiques, galleries and eateries (as well as the town’s best nightlife) can be found.

8. Orlando, Florida

Savannah > Orlando: 450 km; 4 hr 20 min (via I-95 S)

And finally, we arrive in Florida, the home state of the Kennedy Space Centre, Disneyland and Gatorland! With so much diverse action, it’s difficult to know how to split your time; either opting for family adventures in Universal Studios and myriad theme parks, fast thrills at the Daytona Speedway or wildlife retreats over on Canaveral National Seashore. Whatever you choose, be sure to go beyond the hype to find Orlando’s authentic side, finding over 100 lakes and 100 more parks, many of which offer weekend entertainment and live music events throughout the year. Despite there being no official gay neighbourhood in the city, there are plenty of great gay bars in Orlando scattered around. However, every June, gay convergence does happen (in crowds of upwards 100,000 gays, lesbians, queers and advocates) for Gay Days Orlando at Walt Disney World – the perfect excuse to don your Minnie Mouse ears and go rollercoastering.

Orlando > Miami – 378 km; 4 hours (via Florida’s Turnpike)

Florida’s next big-time city comes about 4 hours’ drive south down the Atlantic Coast. It is of course Miami, a cosmopolitan melting pot of beach-ready Barbie and Ken Dolls with a reputation for partying. Known as the Gay Riviera, Miami is wholly welcoming to gay travellers, particularly in the gaybourhood of South Beach (or SoBe if you will), as well as the gay beach near Ocean Drive. Have fun in the sand with tan bodies, moving the fun inwards after sundown for sexy gay bars and clubs alongside a range of gay-friendly accommodations and restaurants. Though Coconut Grove has had to hand over its gay crown to South Beach in recent years, the grove area still has a lot to offer, such as the famed White Party at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Also on our radar is Coral Gables, a slightly more muted gay area with trendy boutiques, restaurants and a few gay nightclubs thrown in. 10. Key West

Miami > Key West: 265 km; 3 hr 30 min (via US-1 S)

Moving from the US mainland and into island mode, we travel via the Overseas Highway to the very end of the Florida Keys to perhaps the best gay Mecca of them all. At less than 20 square kilometres in size, Key West is a tiny slice of heaven with aquamarine waters on all sides to rival the Caribbean beaches that lie some 140 kilometres south off the coast. Besides pristine landscapes of sand, sea and tropical greenery, Key West also offers one of most inclusive communities in the US, bearing the motto ‘One Human Family’. Be totally at ease within a town led by openly gay and lesbian elected officials, walking through the centre in the footsteps of Tennessee Williams who lived here for decades. Owing to the open-minded and artistic residents and politicians, Key West caters fully to the LGBT community, hosting a great many gay-oriented guesthouses and LGBTQ resorts as well as far-out private villas to appeal to introverted travellers. Extroverts meanwhile can go all out on Key West’s many clothing-optional beaches, turning inland a little for gay-owned cafes and restaurants, followed by drag shows and gay pool parties that run late into the night. Bear in mind that driving and parking on Key West can get pricey so the best bet is to park up at your residence and rent bikes to get around the compact city. If you’re planning a New York to Florida road trip, you’ve come to the right place! After several epic road trips and living in 4 states on the East Coast, I know all the best places to stop when driving from NYC to Florida allowing you to experience a variety of landscapes and activities. 

This road trip will take you down the coast for an unforgettable journey through these states: New York , Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina , South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida . I’ll be sharing the best places to stop on the drive to Florida from New York , as well as noteworthy activities and sites, East Coast hidden gems , and other helpful tips.

What’s impressive about the United States’ Eastern Coast is that each state is special in its own way. Whether you’re driving from New York to Florida with friends, your partner, or solo, you’re in for quite the adventure. Get ready for stunning mountain views, breathtaking beaches, delicious food, and vibrant nightlife.  

And, one of my favourite parts of this NYC to Florida drive is finding secret spots along the way, which you’ll certainly come across as you make your way to each of these destinations!

New York to Florida Road Trip Map

How far is the drive from New York to Florida?

The drive straight through from New York City, New York to Miami, Florida is about 1,300 miles and 20 hours. But, of course, you want to make stops along the way to explore.

This guide shares the best driving route from New York to Florida, with  18 cities  or areas to stop in. Each destination is within a one to five-hour drive to the other. 

Since the drives are shorter, you could stop at half of them on your way down and the other half on your way back up. Alternatively, you could do a slow drive one way and a quicker drive the other way. 

Of course, this will all depend on your travel style and timeline. If you’re not planning on making any stop-offs you might consider taking a bus from NYC to Orlando instead.

How long is the drive from New York to Florida?

While I recommend taking  one to three months to make the most of your New York to Florida road trip, many people don’t have this much time, which is totally understandable! 

If you’re on a shorter timeline, driving from NYC to Florida and back  can  be done in  two to three weeks .  

As you read, you’ll see that I recommend how long to spend in each place – usually around three days. But since the stops I recommend are so close to one another, you can easily skip some or just make a quick stop if you’d prefer.

Best Time for a New York to Florida Road Trip

There is no right or wrong time to attempt this road trip from NYC to Florida. It depends on your preference and what you aim to achieve during your trip.

I suggest avoiding the winter months, however. It’s common for the East Coast to see snow during this time which could make for treacherous driving conditions.

The peak of Summer may also be less favourable – not only because of soaring temperatures (which isn’t fun when road-tripping) but also due to the holiday crowds.

Ideally, the months of June or September would be ideal for driving from New York to Florida.

Where to Stay on Route?

Whether you’re a camping kind of road tripper or you prefer resting at hotels or vacation rentals, most of these stops offer both options. 

I mostly camped in my camper van on my East Coast road trip. Although, there aren’t too many free camping spots since there isn’t Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land on this side of the country.

However, I did find the odd free park up, mostly in national forests, using vanlife apps like iOverlander and the Free Campsites  website. There are also plenty of paid campsites at state parks and other campgrounds, along with the Hipcamp app.

If you prefer hotels or staying in vacation rentals, this is easy to find along the coast. I always use booking.com to find the best deals.

Road Trip from New York to Florida - The Best Places to Stop

Now, let’s get to the fun part and check out the best places to stop on your New York to Florida road trip! 

Of course, as you begin your New York to Miami road trip, you’re going to want to spend some time in the  ‘Empire State’ . Famous for its cultural diversity, stunning landscapes, and bustling economy, there’s so much to see and do in New York.

My favourite 2 places are  New York City  and the  Finger Lakes region . This gives you the perfect mix of nature, city life, and fantastic food and drinks.

You can’t go wrong starting your New York to Florida road trip in NYC. The ‘Big Apple’  is a melting pot appreciated for its vibrant culture, architectural variety, and incredible cuisine. It’s no wonder that it’s considered one of the most iconic cities in the world.

While you’ll have your road trip vehicle with you, I recommend leaving it parked while you explore the city. It’s easy to wander around on foot, and the public transportation system is fantastic.

Things to do in NYC

Whether you’re looking to spend just one night or a few, here are some recommended activities to do while you’re in NYC:

• Manhattan:  Visit Times Square, Central Park, Empire State Building.
• SUMMIT One Vanderbilt – an immersive, multi-sensory art experience with 360-degree views of the city
• Chelsea Market : A lively marketplace with endless food.
• The Metropolitan Museum of Art:  The largest art museum in the US.
• Chinatown : An area filled with Chinese and Asian cuisine and shops. 
• Brooklyn:  Check out street art, Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, have a waterfront dinner at Time Out Market.

2. Finger Lakes

NYC to Cayuga Lake (Finger Lakes), 245 miles, 4.5 hours

The Finger Lakes region just might be my favourite hidden gem on the east coast . This 9,000 square-mile area of natural beauty is in west-central New York, where you can find eleven long, narrow lakes. While it’s a little off the path from NYC, it’s well worth a visit. 

Each lake is roughly half an hour from one to the other. I recommend taking your time to explore as many lakes as you can, where you can find wineries, waterfalls, and state parks. Whether you’re interested in hiking, biking, dining, or fishing, there’s something for everyone!

Each lake area offers so much to do. You can find accommodations, including hotels, campsites, inns, and private vacation rentals. You can make this part of your adventure as short or long as you’d like.

Here are some top spots to check out around the Finger Lakes:

• Cayuga Lake:  Downtown Ithaca, Stewart Park, Taughannock Falls State Park.
• Seneca Lake : Watkins Glen State Park, Zugibe Vineyards, Grist Iron Brewing.
• Keuka Lake:  The Keuka Outlet Trail, Keuka Lake State Park, Champlin Beach.

Pennsylvania

Next up is a quick stop in Pennsylvania to explore the uber-cool city of  Philadelphia . While there are great places to stop between the Finger Lakes and here, I prefer to make a beeline for Philadelphia before continuing south. Of course, you can go ahead and add other stops to your journey as you see fit! 

3. Philadelphia

Keuka Lake (Finger Lakes) to Philadelphia, 286 miles, 4.75 hours 

Philadelphia is a must-visit on your New York to Florida road trip – especially if you enjoy history, nature, and food.

It’s also one of the best places on this itinerary where you can make a quick stop. One to three days in Philly is plenty for you to experience what the city has to offer.

To get around Philadelphia, it’s best to use public transportation. There’s also a lot to explore within walking distance of the downtown area known as Center City. 

Below are some of the top things to see and do in Center City. For a full day downtown, you can visit each area in this order stopping at or skipping whatever you’d like! 

The walk from Rittenhouse Square to Old City is only about half an hour but offers many points of interest along the way. Many visitors enjoy staying in the Old City, where you can find many hotels, restaurants and bars.

Things to do in Philadelphia Center City

• Rittenhouse Square:   Town square and urban park to relax, shop, and dine.
• Midtown Village:  Historical monuments like Independence Mall, several performing arts venues, and a thriving LGBTQ+ community.
• South Street in Society Hill:  Shops, galleries, and restaurants.
• Independence National Historical Park:  20 blocks filled with museums, the Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall.
• Old City:  Nightlife galore with restaurants, cafes, and bars

Next up on your New York to Florida road trip, we have Maryland.

It’s the national anthem’s birthplace and home to the highest number of blue crabs on the East coast. It, therefore, goes without saying that Maryland is a hotspot for delicious seafood. 

As you journey through Maryland, the best stops to visit include Baltimore ,  Washington D.C. , and the  Assateague Island National Seashore. 

4. Baltimore

Philadelphia to Baltimore, 105 miles, 2 hours 

While Baltimore is a must-see, the experiences that make it unique can easily be explored in a day or two.

Again, like other northern US cities, getting around Baltimore is best on foot or via public transportation. So, feel free to leave your road-tripping vehicle parked up so you can go off and explore.

• The National Aquarium:  The most visited attraction in Baltimore.
• Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail : Walking Trail with picturesque views of the city and harbour.
• Try blue crabs and other seafood.

5. Washington D.C.

Baltimore to Washington, 38 miles, 1 hour

On the border of Maryland and Virginia is Washington D.C. (District of Columbia). If you haven’t been to the United States’ capital, this drive from NYC to Florida is the perfect time to check it out. 

You can easily make a quick stop here on your way to the next destination or spend a few days. It all depends on how big of a history buff you are.

Aside from the iconic sites in Washington like the White House and Capitol Hill, below are some other noteworthy spots and hidden gems.

• Constitution Gardens:  A 50-acre park that’s beautiful day and night.
• The Hillwood Estate, Museum, and Gardens:  A decorative arts museum.
• Culture House:  An old neighbourhood church turned vibrant arts collective.

6. Assateague Island National Seashore

Washington D.C. to Assateague Island National Seashore, 147 miles, 3 hours 

Although you’ll be on the border of Virginia when you stop in Washington, nature enthusiast’s will want to drive 3 hours east to Assateague Island National Seashore.

Assateague Island is a protected area off the coast of Maryland with beaches, trails, and wildlife.

Every road tripper needs a few days off to relax, and Assateague is the perfect place for it. Enjoy relaxing on the beach, watersports, and even horseback riding alongside the ocean.

If beachside camping is your thing, you’re going to love Assateague. You can find several campgrounds on and around the beach, including private spots in the Maryland State Park. There are also hotels. 

Note: If you have pets, you may only visit the Maryland side of Assateague Island National Seashore. Pets aren’t allowed on the Virginia portion of the island.

As you make your way south, your next stop is the East Coasts historical and beautiful state of Virginia.

Many road trippers know Virginia as the beginning of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the scenic route that runs from VA to NC.

Since this New York to Florida road trip itinerary takes us closer to the coast, we won’t hit the Blue Ridge Parkway just yet. But, don’t worry, we will come back to it later on. 

For now, I suggest stopping in  Virginia Beach ,  Richmond , and  Roanoke .

7. Virginia Beach

Assateague Island National Seashore to Virginia Beach, 106 miles, 2 hours

Virginia Beach is a lively coastal town with a vibrant culture and tons of activities to enjoy. It’s especially ideal for those looking to relax on a beautiful and unique beach.

There are many places for road trippers to stay in Virginia Beach, including hotels, vacation rentals, and campgrounds. 

Aside from hanging out on the coast, these Virginia attractions and hidden gems are worth checking out.

Things to do in Virginia Beach

• Cape Henry Lighthouse:  Worth the climb up the lighthouse for picture-perfect views.
• Mount Trashmore Park:  The largest park in VA beach with an incredible (and   Instagrammable ) colourful staircase.
• Beach Street USA:  A beachfront street lined with shops, restaurants, cafes, live performers, and events.
• False Cape State Park: Unspoiled beaches off the beaten track; only accessible by foot or bicycle (cool place to tent camp!) 

8. Richmond

Virginia Beach to Richmond, 107 miles, 1.75 hours

After the beach, head to Virginia’s eclectic capital city of Richmond.

There’s something for everyone in Richmond, from unique architecture and outdoor adventures to craft beer galore and endless dining experiences.

You can easily spend a week here getting round all there is to see. But no matter how much time you have, I’d highly suggest stopping for as long as possible!

Things to do in Richmond

• Virginia Holocaust Museum:  Offers a fascinating learning experience.
• Belle Isle:  A small island on the James River where you can hike, swim, or kayak.
• Brewery hop:  Richmond has more than 30 craft breweries, most of which are well worth checking out. 
• Downtown Richmond:  Wander around the riverfront, where you can find shops, murals, historical landmarks, bars, and more.

Richmond to Roanoke, 189 miles, 3 hours 

While Roanoke isn’t always a top spot in Virginia, in my opinion, it’s worth checking out. Particularly if you’re a hiker – if you’re a hiker, Roanoke is a must-visit  when making the drive from New York to Florida! 

Roanoke is home to several outdoor adventures and quirky attractions. It also leads you towards the Blue Ridge Parkway for the next part of your journey.

Stop for a day or spend a couple of nights and check out the following unique activities and sites: 

Things to do in Roanoke

• Mill Mountain Park and the Roanoke Star:  Various hiking trails in a beautiful park with an iconic massive star (excellent photo-op!).
• Smith Mountain Lake:  A gorgeous place to hang out on the water with camping opportunities available.
• Carvins Cove Natural Reserve: Located on the Appalachian Trail, it features a stunning panorama. 

North Carolina

Now it’s time to make your way over to the Blue Ridge Parkway. With breathtaking mountain views and an exhilarating ride, a NYC to Florida road trip isn’t complete without spending some time on this stretch. 

You’ll probably want to  have your camera ready  and plan in extra time for stop-offs, as there are many jaw-dropping lookout points. 

When you leave Roanoke, you’ll head south and slightly west to the Blue Ridge Parkway, then continue down to  Little Switzerland  and  Asheville . Get ready for an awesome road trip of North Carolina

10. Little Switzerland

Roanoke to Blue Ridge Parkway to Little Switzerland, 254 miles, 4.5 hours 

Now that the Blue Ridge Parkway has gotten you geared up for the incredible North Carolina mountains be ready for Little Switzerland to blow your mind! 

This unique, unincorporated community sits over 3,000 feet above sea level. Between its charm and mountain views, there’s a good chance you’ll never want to leave Little Switzerland.

Here are some noteworthy things to see and do in Little Switzerland :

• Grassy Creek Falls:  Nature trails leading to a 25-foot waterfall.
• Books & Beans:  Massive shop selling books, crafts, treats, and coffee.
• DiamondBack 226A:  A curvy highway with unmatched views – perfect for adventurous road trippers. 

11. Asheville

Little Switzerland to Asheville, 52 miles, about 1 hour

Head over to Asheville via the Blue Ridge Parkway for more mountainous beauty.

You’ll drive through Black Mountain, which is well worth stopping in for a mountainside hike and checking out the quaint downtown area.

Again, many of the best Asheville adventures are the gems you’ll find on your drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. This area is teeming with waterfalls , trails, and views.

• Downtown Asheville:  Vibrant area with fun restaurants, cafes, breweries, and bars.
• Pisgah National Forest:   Forested area with hiking trails, waterfalls, and campsites.

12. Charlotte

Charlotte, known for award-winning cuisine and beer, diverse culture, and fun activities is one of my favourite places to visit on the New York to Florida drive.

The tagline “Charlotte’s got a lot” couldn’t be more accurate. Charlotte is filled with a ton of exciting experiences, and there’s something for all kinds of travellers to enjoy. 

Even if you’re like me and don’t usually opt for visiting big cities, look to spend two or 3 days in Charlotte during your NYC to Florida road trip. I promise you won’t regret it!

• Spend time in Uptown Charlotte : First Ward Park, Harvey B. Gantt Center, NASCAR Hall of Fame, The Green Park, Truist Field for baseball, and Mint Museum.

• Visit Lake Norman : A large lake with water recreation and a local state park.

South Carolina

As you continue on your New York to Florida road trip, you’ll make your way through the mountains back towards the ocean.

South Carolina is known for delicious southern fare, friendly people, beautiful weather, and some of the best family beaches on the East Coast . 

Let’s visit Greenville  and  Charleston , easily two of South Carolina’s absolute best cities.

13. Greenville

Asheville to Greenville, 63 miles, about 1 hour 

Greenville is an up-and-coming city with a growing diverse culture, an award-winning downtown area, and ample natural beauty. It’s got something to offer all kinds of road trippers.

14. Charleston

Greenville to Charleston, 212 miles, 3.25 hours

Charleston is a charming, historic city that’s been named the  ‘best small city’  for 11 consecutive years. But don’t let the term ‘ small’  fool you. 

Charleston itself grows by the year, offering endless things to see and do. And there are tons of other towns that lie just outside of Charleston, which you may find you want to explore.

I recommend staying for a long weekend in Charleston . The city really comes to life Friday through to Sunday while 3 days allows you plenty of time to explore all that there is to see.

Things to do in Charleston

• Folly Beach:  Laid-back beach with a lively downtown area.
• Sullivan’s Island Beach:  More upscale beach with great restaurants and bars nearby. 
• Downtown Charleston:  Shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, and historical sites (I highly recommend taking a day to bike around downtown – lots of bike rentals available!)
• Shem Creek:  There are various bars and seafood restaurants on the water with amazing views. 

As your New York to Florida drive continues, you’ll hit Georgia. A lot like South Carolina, you’ll find friendly locals, nice weather, and delicious food.

The two beautiful and quirky areas I like to explore in Georgia are  Savannah  and  Jekyll Island . 

15. Savannah

Charleston to Savannah, 110 miles, 2 hours

Located just a couple of hours south of Charleston, Savannah is another exciting city with lots to offer.

That said, it does offer a very similar experience to Charleston. So if you’re crunched for time, it’s a stop I’d say you can afford to miss.  

However, if you do decide to stop here, you won’t be disappointed. While Charleston offers beautiful beach life, Savannah has a more laid-back vibe. You feel a sense of unmatched serenity here.

Here are some of my favourite  things to see and do in Savannah : 

• Downtown Savannah : Stroll, shop, eat and drink.
• Forsyth Park: Large city park in Savannah’s historic district.  

16. Jekyll Island

Savannah to Jekyll Island, 94 miles, 1.5 hours

Just south of Savannah, directly on the ocean, is the beautiful Jekyll Island. If you need some downtime and tranquillity, your prayers will be answered at this stop!

Jekyll Island is the perfect place to lay on the beach and relax or enjoy activities. In line with the laid-back beach vibe, there are tons of bike trails around the island, so I love hopping on a bike to explore the area.

Things to do in Jekyll Island

• Jekyll Island Historic District:  Large site with over 30 historic structures.
• 4H Tidelands Nature Centers:  Kayak tours, nature walks, and a wildlife exhibit.
• Horton Pond: The ideal place to relax or take a hike. 

Note: If you don’t have your own bike with you, you can find plenty of places where you can rent them. 

And, just like that, you’ve made it to Florida – the last state on your New York to Florida Road Trip. But do not fear; the fun is far from over. 

Here in the sunshine state, it’s all about relaxation and beach life, as well as a little bit of nightlife if that’s your style. There is no best time to visit Florida since it has a subtropical climate all year round.  

On your drive through Florida, the best places to visit are  Fernandina Beach (& Amelia Island) ,  Orlando , Miami and Key West . 

17. Fernandina Beach & Amelia Island

Jekyll Island to Fernandina Beach, 65 miles, 1.25 hours

The historic city of Fernandina Beach is where you’ll find the beautiful Amelia Island. Both areas are well worth spending some time hanging out in. 

Beach adventures are at the top of most visitors’ bucket lists, and rightfully so. The beaches here are unmatched. But, here are some other things to do when you’re visiting Fernandina Beach.

Fernandina Beach to Orlando, 178 miles, 2.75 hours

If you’ve never been to Orlando, this one’s a must-visit on your NYC to Florida road trip!

While it’s known for its iconic theme parks, Orlando also offers amazing food, shopping, nature, and nightlife opportunities. 

While you’re in Orlando, I’m sure you’ll want to check out a theme park or two (get your tickets in advance here). But, here are some other things to do in the ‘City Beautiful.

If your impressions of the East Coast come from driving along the I-95 corridor through nearly nonstop urban and industrial sprawl, following our Atlantic Coast route will open your eyes to a whole other world, alternating between wildly differing beach resort areas and lengthy stretches of pristine coastal wilderness. In place of the grimy concrete and soulless netherworld of the interstate, this route passes through innumerable quirky seaside towns and timeless old fishing villages, interspersed with huge swaths of beaches, wetlands, and woodlands that have hardly changed since the European explorers laid eyes on them four centuries ago.

Starting in the north at that all-American icon, the Statue of Liberty, and winding up in the south at free-wheeling Key West , this route truly offers something for everyone. Those searching for photogenic lighthouses or beachcombing solitude will love the undeveloped and usually deserted strands that stretch for miles along the low-lying islands that make up most of the coast, much of which, as at Assateague Island or Cape Hatteras , has been protected as national seashore parks. In contrast, the many beach resorts that dot the in-between areas vary from the grand Victorian charms of Cape May to the funky old Coney Island-style attractions of Ocean City, Maryland, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with their boardwalks full of roller coasters, wax museums, and saltwater taffy stands. And let’s not forget the glitzy casino resorts of Atlantic City.

Alongside the contemporary attractions are many evocative historic sites, including such unique places as Roanoke Island, North Carolina , where the first English-speaking colony in North America vanished without a trace in 1587. Lying south of the Mason-Dixon Line for almost all of its length, the route also visits many important Civil War sites, including Fort Sumter , where the first shots of the war were fired, and the vital naval battlegrounds at Hampton Roads at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. Midway along, we also pass one of the key sites of modern history: the windy sand dunes at Kitty Hawk, where the Wright Brothers first proved that humans could fly.

Although this Atlantic Coast route will bring you to many well-known sights, its real attraction is the traveling, stopping off for fried chicken or barbecue at one of the hundreds of roadside stands, watching the shrimp boats pull into a sleepy dock and unload their day’s catch, or simply chatting with locals at the general store or post office in a town that may not even be on the map.

Skip That Key West Flight – Take This Road Trip From Miami Instead

Imagine it: 113 miles of roadway with 42 bridges that leapfrog you across aquamarine water with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Your car window showcases endless breathtaking views of the open sea and sky. It’s not just a dream; it’s a reality. It is the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, the southernmost leg of U.S. Highway 1 and a modern wonder. 

This Iconic Road Was Once a Railroad

The road follows a trail originally blazed in 1912 when railroad baron Henry Flagler completed the extension of his Florida East Coast Railroad from Miami to Key West. The railway ceased operation after severe damage to its infrastructure in 1935.

The highway’s foundation, completed in 1938, incorporated some of the original railway spans, the coral bedrock of individual keys, and specially constructed columns.

Today, drivers can leave Miami and travel the entire length of the Overseas Highway in less than four hours. Another bonus to doing the Miami to Key West drive is that flights are significantly cheaper into Miami International Airport, and frequent flyer award trips are easier to find than Key West’s small airport. So while some people may choose to drive to Key West to save money, you miss so much by flying directly into Key West. 

“The Miami to Key West drive is much more fun than flying into the island! The reason is simple: the drive through the Florida Keys is one of the most beautiful and scenic road trips there are,” says Cami from Travel Cami.

“During the 166-mile trip, you will get to drive across the iconic Seven Mile Bridge and get the chance to experience all these fun stops along the way. If you flew directly into Key West, you’d miss the chance to see all these amazing places.”

“Even though flying direct into Key West might be more convenient, doing the Miami to Key West drive shouldn’t be missed. It’s a unique road trip with all the bridges; It’s a Florida road trip that’s very much about the journey. It can be slow going, but just back and enjoy the views,” says Kylie from Between England and Iowa.

1. Coral Castle in Homestead, Florida

Coral Castle is a great backup plan if you’re looking for a last-minute add-on during your Key West road trip return drive. Located 40 minutes from Miami Airport, if you have a little extra time before your return flight home, check it out. Coral Castle is a unique local destination right off Route 1 and 5 blocks from the turnpike exit ramp.

“Edward Leedskalnin carved over 1,100 tons of coral rock by hand into various tables, benches, walls, a sundial, and more. Edward created this site as a monument to his true love, Agnes, who canceled their wedding the day before they were to be married. Opened to the public in 1920, admission is now $18 and includes a guided tour,” says Tiffany from Pennies, Places, and Paws . 

2. The Fish House in Key Largo

Whether it’s time to eat on your Miami to Key West drive or you’re going to spend a good part of your day at nearby John Pennekamp State Park, put the highly rated yet casual Fish House on your list. 

“The Fish House has incredible seafood dishes, including a local favorite: conch chowder! This tomato-based soup tastes delicious and is the perfect appetizer before digging into heartier dishes. For lunch or dinner, dine on fresh local seafood, including mahi-mahi, yellowtail snapper, crab, shrimp, scallops, and so much more,” says McKenna of One More Step Travels . “

3. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is approximately 60 miles south of Miami. It was established in 1963 to preserve the only living coral reef in the continental United States, becoming the very first underwater park in the country. There are a lot of amazing places to stop during your Miami to Key West drive, but if you’re a diver, this is a must-do!

“If seeing or diving to a coral reef is on your bucket list, you do that in the continental United States. While Australia and  Belize have the two biggest coral reefs in the world, there’s one in the United States not too far off the mainland in Key Largo,” says Sanjana at The Female Professional.

This State Park Offers So Much

“Visitors can enjoy various water activities such as boating, paddling, fishing, snorkeling, swimming, and scuba diving. You can also book a glass boat tour to experience the park’s coral reef system, says Rachel & Dana of Traveling Found Love . “The most popular feature, “Christ of the Deep,” an underwater Jesus statue, is located at the Key Largo Dry Rock reef.

“John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is one of many great places to stop during a Miami to Key West drive.  Mangrove swamps, vivid coral reefs, and various marine life surrouark. You can kayak around the park, go snorkeling, and more. But, I agree the best thing for divers is seeing the infamous Christ of the Abyss statue,” says Disha from Disha Discovers .   

4. Parasailing in Key Largo

“Key Largo, the first island in the Florida Keys, is known for its adventure sports. It is an amazing experience to fly like a bird with scintillating views of blue waters,” says Neha from Travel Melodies . 

“Key Largo Parasail is a great adventure company located at Mile marker 104. There is an option to go on a tandem ride or even a triple ride attached to a parachute. The motorboat takes you into the middle of the water, and there you go like a bird.” 

5. Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada

“Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada has been voted one of the top places to visit on a Key West road trip. It’s a restaurant, bar, shopping area, excursion center, and offers activities for the entire family,” says Nicole from The Abroad Blog .

“The most well-known activity at Robbie’s is feeding the tarpons. Tarpons are giant, prehistoric Atlantic fish that are found throughout the Keys. Most people enjoy feeding them at Robbie’s, but if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can also snorkel with them here!”

“Aside from snorkeling, Robbie’s also offers fishing excursions, parasailing, and sunset cruises. Lastly, load up on souvenirs before resuming your Miami to Key West drive.”

6. Curry Hammock State Park in Marathon

Curry Hammock State Park is located about halfway through the Miami to Key West drive, deemed “uninhabited, untouched and unrivaled.” Yet, this 1,000-acre park is a tranquil place to get up close and personal with this protected land’s inhabitants. 

“One of the best places to kayak in the Florida Keys is Curry Hammock, State Park. The mangrove tunnels and quiet bays are perfect for seeing wildlife and having a unique experience on the water,” said Rob from 2 Travel Dads.  

7. Porky’s Bayside BBQ in Marathon

“When doing the Miami to Key West drive, you must stop at Porky’s Bayside BBQ to try their scrumptious Fried Key Lime Pie,” says Jenessa from Destination Daydreamer. “Porky’s is a casual and fun BBQ restaurant located at mile marker 47.5 with funky decor and open-air seating. 

“The restaurant sits right on Porky’s Marina and serves BBQ smoked daily, fresh seafood, and one of the most unique Key Lime Pies you’ll find in the Florida Keys. So even if you’ve just eaten, make sure you swing by Porky’s to try their Fried Key Lime Pie for dessert-it’s one of the best things to do in the Keys !” 

8. Bahia Honda State Park in Big Pine Key

I’ve learned from a friend whose family had a beach house in The Florida Keys that while Key West is amazing, the resorts don’t have the best beaches. If you want to get your beach fix, stop and enjoy the award-winning beaches at Bahia Honda State Park during your Miami to Key West drive.

A New Use for Historic Train Tracks

Henry Flagler’s 1900s railroad to Key West turned the remote island of Bahia Honda Key into a tropical destination within reach for people. Unfortunately, the elevated train tracks were damaged in a hurricane, and now the easternmost section is a walking bridge for visitors.

Bahia Honda State Park covers 500 acres and is an offshore island and family-friendly spot for snorkeling and beachcombing. It has conveniences like a snack bar, kayak rentals, and snorkeling tours to the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary.

9. National Key Deer Refuge Center in Big Pine Key

If doing the Miami to Key West Drive with kids, this sounds like one of the best stops. My kids love animals, and seeing these miniature deer in Key West sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“One of the unique things to do in the Florida Keys is seeing Key Deer, the smallest deer in North America,” said Charles from McCool Travel.  “Learn about them at the National Key Deer Refuge Nature Center on Big Pine Key (MM 30.5).”

“From there, drive on Key Deer Blvd about three miles to two wilderness areas—Blue Hole and Fred C. Manilo Wildlife Trail. If you have not seen any dog-sized deer, drive onto No Name Key, which is much less crowded than Big Pine Key and offers a better chance of seeing key deer.”

10. Ernest Hemingway House in Key West

“Located on Whitehead Street in Old Town Key West across from the Key West Lighthouse, a visit to the Ernest Hemingway House is one of Key West’s top things to do ,” said Lori of Travlin Mad.

“Many of his works and collected objects from the ten years he lived and wrote here in the 1930s are on full display. But they aren’t the only remaining artifacts of the home — look for the polydactyl (6-toed) cats — as many as 40-50 remain on the property, who descended from Hemingway’s cat, Snow White.”

11. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park in Key West

“At mile zero from Miami to Key West is the US’s most southernmost state park and beach, Fort Zachary Taylor in Key West Florida. This 54-acre park is a must-see swim stop.”

“The spectacular white-sand beach with its lapping turquoise waves is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, paddling, and picnicking,” says Emma from Journey Of A Nomadic Family .

“Combining US history with a beautiful nature spot, the beach is open 8-5 all year round and costs $4 to enter with a car. The red-brick site predates the Civil War and houses the largest cache of armament in the world. “

If you snorkel here, you can expect to see rich tropical marine life such as parrotfish, yellowtail snapper, lobster, and corals. Then, once you’ve dried off, walk around the wooded nature trails to discover more.” 

12. Dry Tortugas National Park in Key West

“Nestled about 70 miles from Florida’s Key West coastline, Dry Tortugas National Park consists of a series of tiny islands perfect for a day trip. ” Most people visiting Dry Tortugas enjoy a day trip from Key West into the park on the Yankee Freedom III ferry,” said Ellie from Ellie’s Travel Tips.

Key West is America’s ultimate road trip destination. As you drive down, you’ll pass other vacation hotspots — Miami and the Everglades to name two — plus the rest of the Florida Keys, but Key West is the end of the line, a slice of the Caribbean right in the continental U.S.

Despite overwhelming popularity, Key West retains its laid-back charm. And though it’s known for parties and bar crawls, it’s just as rich in history, nature and outdoor adventure, everything you need for your family vacation.

Where to Stay: The Capitana

My top tip for Key West is to choose your accommodations wisely. The walking, sunshine and adventuring around town are great, but coming back to a comfortable place to stay makes your entire experience that much better.

That’s what we discovered at The Capitana . In nearly 15 years of travel writing, this was the best hotel we’ve stayed at. It perfectly balances casual comfort and luxury. Here’s what we liked best:

• Unlimited bottled water on every floor to keep you hydrated
• A resort-style pool with a tiki bar, lawn games and a hot tub
• The view of the gulf from the pool with a sandy area for lounging
• Breakfast and parking included
• Spacious, carpet-free rooms with beautiful decor and balconies
• The in-room kitchenette for snacks and impromptu meals

The hotel just opened this year so everything is sparkling new. The location is also convenient for road-trippers. You can stock up on groceries at Publix a half-mile up the road, and you’re less than 2 miles from Duval Street.

Where to Eat in Key West: Family-Friendly Restaurants

Key West is famous for its food, and most restaurants welcome families. What I suggest is picking somewhere with a great location. That way, you’re discovering a new area of Key West as you dine.

This was our favorite meal in Key West. It didn’t need the sunset view over the water to make it memorable (see the feature photo above), but that didn’t hurt.

A local favorite since the ’70s and featured on the Travel Channel, the Half Shell Raw Bar serves fresh seafood dockside. And I do mean fresh. They have their own fish market, and you’ll sometimes see fishermen unloading their latest catch.

Slide into a picnic table and admire the boats in the harbor before getting down to business.

What to order:

• Seafood is a must. From crab cakes and po boys to scallops and stuffed snapper, you’ll find something for any palate.
• Kids will like the burger and the baskets, which come with fries. Be sure to steal a bite if they’ll share. They’re tasty.
• If you feel like trying the raw bar, there’s a sampler platter with oysters, clams and shrimp.
• Other specialties include pink shrimp, stone crab and conch. For a smaller taste of conch meat, get it as an app: conch fritters, conch ceviche or (our pick) red conch chowder, lightly spicy and satisfying.
• Please get the key lime pie! I’ve never had key lime pie this creamy and delicately sweet. It’s perfect and unforgettable.

Cayo Hueso Café at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park

Run by a father-daughter team that’s lived in Key West since 1986, Cayo Hueso Café has one of the best locations on the island — a few barefoot steps from the city’s top beach. The cafe is the only restaurant at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park , a must-visit attraction when you’re in Key West. You’ll want to spend an afternoon here.

• Their Cuban is what they’re known for: pork, ham, salami, Swiss, pickles, mustard and mayo on fresh bread.
• Salads and wraps are also good if you want something lighter.
• The usual suspects (burger, hot dog, pizza, etc.) are here, too, so the kids will be happy.

They also have a water fountain around the corner where you can fill up and plenty of shady tables nearby for picnicking.

At the other end of the historic seaport , not far from the Half Shell Raw Bar, is Fisherman’s Cafe . If you’re strolling along Lazy Way enjoying the shops, kitschy art and scenery, this is a great place to grab a bite.

You take it to go and enjoy your meal al fresco, in true Key West fashion.

• I got the Island Bowl for a lighter lunch, but I’ve heard good things about their lobster tacos.
• You must, must, must order the sesame guava toast. It’s a steal at less than $3 and is decadently delicious.
• If your hotel doesn’t serve breakfast, stop by for an egg sandwich and cafe con leche to brighten your morning.

Sebago Watersports : Their eco tours take you into the mangrove islands to get up-close with nature.

Classic Harbor Line : The draw for adults is often the unlimited drinks. At sunset, cruise right on by the crowds at Mallory Square as the sun dips into the horizon.

Danger Charters : For a splurge, do their half-day tour that includes sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, drinks and snacks.

Fury Water Adventures : Beyond sailing, choose from snorkeling, parasailing, jet skiing and an all-inclusive adventure that boasts a water park in the ocean.

When and If : Sail away on a beautifully restored 1939 vessel originally built for General Patton.

Family-Friendly Key West Attractions

The historic downtown isn’t huge, but there’s a lot to do here, so if you just have a couple days, you’ll need to prioritize. Besides the snorkeling, sailing and other water activities — and the state park and seaport mentioned above — here’s some more family-friendly Key West fun.

What to see with kids in Key West:

• The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory , with hundreds of butterflies who flutter around you
• Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum , where the famous American author once lived and where his almost equally famous six-toed cats live on and sometimes let you pet them
• Mel Fisher Maritime Museum , thousands of artifacts, bona fide ship treasure and fascinating stories from Florida’s maritime history
• Mallory Square Sunset Celebration , a nightly festival featuring live performers and the best sundown show on the East Coast

Oh, and there’s a shipwreck museum, an aquarium, a lighthouse — and more.

Tips for Your Key West Trip

You’ll love Key West. There’s just nothing like living on island time for a few days. These tips will help you get the most out of your trip.

• Build in some down time. This is part of the reason I recommend a great hotel. It’s nice to come back to the pool during the heat of the day. Either way, leave time between attractions so you can sightsee along the way or spend longer at a place that captivates you.
• Plan for parking. If you’re driving (and what road-tripping family isn’t?), plan to pay for parking in Key West. There are city lots and garages near the seaport for $4 per hour, but you can find cheaper street parking downtown. There’s even free parking at Higgs Beach, and your parking at Fort Zachary Taylor is included with admission.
• Save money with the free Duval Loop bus. Better yet, ditch the car and take this free Key West bus with 18 stops around town.
• Consider skipping the southernmost point. This concrete buoy marking the southern end (sort of) of the continental U.S. is beloved by tourists. But there’s often a line to take a photo. If you want this family pic, please go! But we saw it from the trolley tour and were just as happy.
• Take Old Town Trolley Tours if you have younger kids. Little feet get tired, bless them. This hop-on, hop-off trolley tour loops around Key West, hitting all the main sights with narration along the way. The Conch Tour Train is another option for easy transportation.
• Go in September when kids are free. The Key West Attractions Association — which also offers the Key West Vacation Pass , worth over $850 in savings —  celebrates families every September when kids get free admission to several sights when you buy an adult ticket.

Day 2: drive 7-8 eight hours, then find a motel

Day 3: Arrive at Myrtle Beach around noon, spend the day

Day 4: Drive all day, lunch in Savannah, motel in Daytona

Found some cheap airline tickets, but ufortunately the dates are set. So I was just looking at what options I have. Do you think this itinerary is too rushed? This is july 2013.

Wayyyyyyy to rushed. Fly into Miami and spend half your week there and the other half in the Keys.

Guess you`re right, just wanted to see some of the country in the process.

But yours is a good idea, thanks. Either we`ll fly into miami and spend the week as you suggested, or maybe we`ll take a short roadtrip, but then skip florida, I think.

You hardly won't see some of the country but mainly inbterstate and as John Steinbeck already said, the interstates are a great way to drive from A to B and see nothing. You also are driving one of the busiest interstates in the USA. What attracts you to Myrtle beach? Myrtle Beach to Daytona Beach is a day of driving not to mention the stop in Savannah and to get there just for lunch doesnot make much sense to me. Another busy trip is between Daytona Beach and Key West. Last part is on a busy and slow 2 lanes highway. Key West is very nice for 2 nights but lodging is very expensive. Take the HoHo tour in Key West and expierience Duval street and the marinas in the evening. You can see a lot of Key West with 2 evenings and one full day. Maybe add another night for places like Charleston and St. Augustine. I prefer those places far to Myrtle Beach.

Another option is to fly Orlando and leave from Key West or Miami. Don't forget, Florida is hot and humid in july. Not the best time of year imo and chances on hurricanes.

I hope you already have your reservations for lodging on Key West. Rooms can be tough to come by, so if you don't have them yet, sort out your dates and make them soon. There are several events in July that will draw some crowds.

Wow--lots of driving, but not getting to see much, especially coming down I-95.

Also curious to know if you're wanting to see something specific at Myrtle Beach....if not, scratch that completely. Spend that time in Savannah. You will love Savannah much more than MB.

Honestly, if it were us, we would split our time between New York and Key West.

Also, keep in mind, since July is peak travel season here in the US, I-95 will be bumper to bumper in many places, with accidents along the way, so you will have to allow extra road time. That 7-8 hour road trip down from NY, may not get you past Northern VA (just South of Washington DC).

Our Favorite 7-Day Road Trips From New York

After planning a packed visit to New York, with all its museums, restaurants, and Broadway shows, take a road trip to Vermont and New Hampshire to really enjoy one of America’s most beautiful spots. With New Hampshire about four and a half hours by car from New York and Vermont just an hour or two from New Hampshire, this is a trip that prioritizes time outside.

Head to Bretton Woods in New Hampshire in the White Mountain National Forest for some of the region’s best snowshoeing in the winter and incredible mountain biking and hiking during the summer. Over in Vermont, the Killington Resort is one of the region’s biggest, also offering snowmobile tours, a tubing park, and more.

Wondering when to plan your Vermont and New Hampshire road trip? It’s easy to take advantage of your preferred season. For skiing in Vermont and New Hampshire, the snowfall can start in November and often lasts until mid-April. For hiking and fishing, come in the summer. For the stunning colors of changing leaves, come in autumn. 

Roadtrip from NYC to Watkins Glen and Letchworth State Parks, Niagara Falls and 1000 Islands

We have again made a great tour from New York: The route leads once through the entire state of New York, with Niagara Falls on the northeastern border with Canada, along the beautiful Finger Lakes to the 1000 Islands on the northeastern border. You can expect a beautiful landscape with many farms, rivers and dreamlike nature.

After this tour, which incidentally follows the course of the Erie Canal, which is largely responsible for the rise of New York City, you can also proudly claim to have been in Lebanon, Athens, Rome, London, Amsterdam, Russia and Hamburg. Because all of these places are located along this great road trip.

The next road trip from New York on my list is quite similar but you spend more time in Canada with Toronto and Montreal on your list.

7-Day Road Trip From New York to Canada

Did you know that New York shares a border with Canada? It can be easy to forget with all of the focus on Manhattan that New York state is actually a fairly big state – and one that connects with America’s neighbor the north.

For a break from New York city life and to experience Canadian culture, you’ll enjoy a weeklong road trip to Canada with stops at Niagara Falls (even taking a boat underneath the falls!), Toronto (where you can size up the city with the view from the CN Tower), and Montreal (where you’ll see the French influence is still alive and well).

Driving from New York to Niagara Falls will take just under seven hours. From there, you’ll drive for two hours to Toronto. Toronto to Montreal is about five and a half hours. Then returning to New York will take about five hours. Though chillier in the winter, this is a beautiful roadtrip from NYC to take no matter the season.

Get To Know America’s Roots on this Roadtrip from New York

New York can feel like the most American of cities: lots of cultures, lots of opportunity, lots of, well, everything. If you want to spend some time getting to know American history, then use a weeklong road trip to head to Washington D.C. and Virginia.

In Washington, D.C., which is about fours from Manhattan by car, you’ll find the National Mall, one of the most concentrated and impressive collections of museums in the United States. Continuing onto Virginia, which was home to four of America’s first five presidents, you can visit living-history museums like the Jamestown Settlement and Colonial Williamsburg.

After your fill of culture and history, you can take advantage of the stunning Shenandoah Valley before taking a four-hour drive over to Virginia’s Eastern Shore to soak up the ocean sprays.

Taste Southern Hospitality in South Carolina on this roadtrip from NYC

After a few hectic days in the hustle and bustle of New York, a trip down the coast to South Carolina can be a wonderful experience. The total driving time from Manhattan down to South Carolina is about 11 hours. Spread out over six or seven days, that means you can enjoy visits to the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, North Carolina on your way to Hilton Head and Charleston, South Carolina.

So-called the Birthplace of Barbecue , South Carolina is as much a culinary destination as a cultural one. Enjoy the change of pace and scenery over your weeklong road trip as you enjoy true Southern Hospitality.

If you’re planning a winter vacation in New York, South Carolina may be a bit warmer, offering you a chance to thaw out. During the summer it can be more humid. Either way, the barbecue is always delicious and the people are always charming.

This tour along the East Coast is one of the most impressive road trips I have taken in the USA so far. In October 2016, my father and I started in New York – where else?! I wanted to show him why I have loved this city so much for years and which spots are close to my heart. 

In total, this route takes you a total of 1,600 miles through 12 US states. What are our highlights of this road trip on the East Coast of the USA for us, I show you here in the travel review.

History And Food In And Around Philadelphia

If you are looking for an amazing weekend road trip adventure from New York look no further! Apart from being known for Rocky’s hometown, Philadelphia is also one of America’s most iconic and historical cities. It’s even where the signing of the Declaration of Independence happened on August 2nd, 1776! So if you’re looking to add a weekend trip onto your time in New York, Philadelphia and a few of its surrounding cities could make for a great choice.

At just under two hours by car (and even less by train!) Philadelphia is an easy trip from New York. Along with stopping by to see the Liberty Bell at Independence Hall, you can also see the birthplace of the American flag and the Museum of the American Revolution (before taking a lunch break to grab a renowned Philly Cheesesteak).

To make a weekend of it, it’s worth turning toward the countryside and heading toward Brandywine Valley. Filled with quaint towns and rolling hills, the region also has a number of renowned wineries making up the Brandywine Valley Wine Trail. 

And what pairs with wine better than chocolate? Just an hour and a half by car to the west, Hershey is the birthplace of Hershey chocolate and the so-called Sweetest Place on Earth. Ideal for families, Hershey features the Hershey Story Museum, Hershey’s Chocolate World, and Hershey Gardens.

Though there are a number of Christmastime activities that make for even sweeter seasonal celebrations, the attractions are open year-round, making Philadelphia, Brandywine, and Hershey a great weekend trip to take from New York.

My tip: An additional stop in Washington D.C. is a great extension to this road trip from New York. Besides the White House, you can visit the Lincoln Memorial, the famous Smithsonian Museums, the United States Capitol or the Washington Monument.

Hike Upstate New York: One Of The Best Weekend Road Trip Adventures From New York

When you want to get out of the city for a few days, hiking in upstate New York is one of the best options. No matter the time of year, hiking in the Adirondacks, the Catskills, and the surrounding regions always offers incredible views, serene nature, and charming small-town atmosphere. 

To get to the Adirondacks from Manhattan, you’ll need about four and a half hours in a car. Perfect for a morning start and a leisurely afternoon hike. Among some of our favorite Adirondack adventures are the Ausable Chasm (which also has white-water rafting for those summer month trips), Cascade Mountain (the supposed easiest of the 46 High Peaks), Mount Marcy (the highest of the 46 High Peaks), and the Saranac Lake 6er (a delightful hiking challenge you can try and tackle in a single weekend).

At just over two hours driving time, the Catskills are an even more accessible weekend trip from New York. With stunning waterfall hikes (don’t miss the Haines Falls!), the Hunter Mountain Fire Tower (one of the region’s most challenging hikes), and plentiful Nordic skiing and snowshoeing , there are plenty of outdoors activities to choose from.

With well-marked trails for any season, you’ll find the snowy hikes and the summertime strolls equally enjoyable. Just make sure you’re dressed for the occasion!

Go Wine Tasting In The Finger Lakes

Want to taste some of the best wine in New York? Soak up the small-town life in some of the state’s quaintest towns? Enjoy some idyllic lakes?

Then it’s time to head to the Finger Lakes Region. Located in upstate New York, the Finger Lakes is home to towns like Ithaca (and Cornell University, the region’s Ivy League), Watkins Glen (some of the best hiking in the area), and Geneva ( recent winner of the All-America City award ).

If you’re looking to get your wine on, the Finger Lakes themselves have four official wine trails ready to be embarked on. This includes

• the Canandaigua Lake Wine Trail
• the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail (“America’s First Wine Trail”)
• the Keuka Lake Wine Trail,
• and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

From Manhattan to the Finger Lakes, you can expect to spend about 5 hours in the car. Perfect for a Friday departure with a few roadside attractions, a lazy Saturday, and then a return late Sunday afternoon. With wine-tasting rooms and events all year round, the time is always right to stop by the Finger Lakes.

Nope! Most rental car agencies are flexible with the return location for your rental car. There may, however, be a slight surcharge for returning it in a different spot than you started.

There’s a lot of road along the East Coast between Portland, Maine and Key West, FL—nearly 1,800 miles of it, in fact. Following safety guidelines and driving no more than 500 miles at a stretch, you could make the trip in under four days—but why would you? Rather, here are five nicely spaced reasons to pull off the road and take a detour.

Portland, ME

Tick the box: Take a picture of the Portland Head Light, an iconic lighthouse built in 1791 at the direction of George Washington himself.

Detour: The Hayloft at Dragonfly Barn. With crystalline acoustics and a warmly intimate setting, this converted barn on an historic farm in Bridgton hosts a wide range of accomplished musicians, including locals and notables from around the country (and beyond). Singer-songwriters, classical ensembles, jazz, and more can be found here. Check the site for event tickets, book a room at the nearby Highland Lake Resort (every room has a lake view), and add a memorable evening to your road trip.

Tick the Box: Take a selfie on the top of the Empire State Building

Detour: Walk on The High Line.  When NYC converted their elevated train tracks into a landscaped public park and walkway , few could have anticipated the appeal. More than 8 million people per year enjoy the intersection of art, design, and urban green space. Along the High Line, grab a cold beer and German nibbles (e.g. sausage, pretzels, and spätzle) at The Standard hotel’s ground-level Biergarten , but perhaps try The Jane for whimsical (and cost-effective) accommodations.

Your road trip guide to the Florida Keys

One of the best state road trips in America has to be the sun-kissed drive from Key Largo to Key West in the Florida Keys. This road, known as the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, takes you through a 125-mile island chain that begins just south of Miami. It hopscotches over 42 bridges and five islands, and has turquoise waters stretching in every direction into the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and Gulf of Mexico.

So if you're looking for the perfect Atlantic Coast road trip or cheap beach vacation , look no further than this road trip guide from Key Largo to Key West. And if you'd rather travel from Key West to Key Largo, rest easy—the route works either way. There are shuttles that run from Key Largo to Key West, but keep in mind, you'd be missing out on all the fun in between.

By the way, once you embark on the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, you'll notice that many sites along the way use mile markers (MM) in their address. We use those mile marker points in this story to help you navigate the drive.

Mile marker: 108–90

The first of the Florida Keys you'll hit after driving about an hour south from Miami en route from Key Largo to Key West is, well, Key Largo. Often referred to as the Dive Capital of the World, Key Largo includes one must-see stop: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (MM 102.5), the first underwater preserve in the United States.

Experienced and novice snorkelers and SCUBA divers will be enthralled by the teeming marine life that lives just below the water's surface, like parrot fish, barracudas and sea turtles. More experienced divers enjoy exploring the USS Spiegel Grove, one of the largest ships ever intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef where pretty fish can thrive.

Back on dry land, travelers can wander nearly six miles of trails at Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, home to more than 80 species of plants and animals. You can also peruse the work of local artists at myriad galleries.

Best beach: Cannon Beach, found within John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, has shallow waters that are perfect for wading. You may even spot cannons and anchors on the beach that remain from a 1715 Spanish shipwreck.

Where to eat: Dig into the catch of the day at The Fish House, Key Largo Conch House or Snook's Bayside Restaurant & Grand Tiki Bar, some of the best traditional restaurants in the area. If you'd rather turf than surf, check out Jimmy Johnson's Big Chill.

Where to stay: If you can't get enough of the underwater world, stay at Jules' Undersea Lodge , the world's first underwater hotel. If you'd rather keep dry, try the adults-only Bungalows Key Largo .

Mile marker: 90–63

Next up en route from Key Largo to Key West is the fisherman's paradise known as Islamorada. Considered the Sport Fishing Capital of the World, it's where backcountry sport fishing and saltwater fly-fishing got their start. Countless seasoned boat captains are ready for hire to take you out to catch the wahoo, marlin, mahi-mahi and tuna that swim in these waters.

There's an even quirkier way to interact with fish here: hand-feeding the tarpon off the docks of Robbie's Marina (MM 77.5). Since 1976, countless Keys visitors have stopped to feed them, and more than 100 kinds of fish gather at the docks for their daily snacks. Feeding the fishies there is so popular, it's been named the No. 1 activity in all the Florida Keys.

Islamorada is also a terrific spot to kitesurf, stand-up paddleboard, go for a hike or take a bicycle ride. Stop by the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, where injured or displaced birdies now make their homes. Or visit the History of Diving Museum, which boasts one of the world's largest collections of diving helmets.

Best beach: Anne's Beach is popular with families (and dogs) because of its shallow waters and lack of waves. Take a walk along the boardwalk or enjoy a picnic at one of the covered tables.

Where to eat: For a quintessential casual Florida Keys meal, go to the Hungry Tarpon. If you want more elegant fare, make reservations at Chef Michael's for creatively inspired local dishes.

Where to stay: When it's time to lay your head for the night, check in to one of the new oceanfront suites at Cheeca Lodge & Spa , or your own cottage at The Moorings Village & Spa .

Mile marker: 63–40

Marathon is the island chain's top boating destination—and for good reason. The area boasts nearly 2,400 boat slips and plenty of facilities to accommodate sailors passing through. But you don't need your own boat to enjoy Marathon and its waters.

For a truly different experience, hop on over to Cruisin' Tikis and have a floating tiki bar adventure. Sunset, mangrove and harbor cruises are all available, as is a swim-stop cruise for a chance to jump into the water.

While you're here, you should also visit Pigeon Key, an island that is accessible by boat, trolley or walking the 2.2-mile Old Seven Mile Bridge. It has a museum to explore, either on a guided tour or on your own. The Bridge is open for walking, running, bicycling, rollerblading and, of course, watching the killer sunrises and sunsets.

Best beach: Sombrero Beach is one of the prettiest beaches in the Florida Keys—not to mention one of the best beaches in Florida . And it's not just popular with humans; sea turtles nest here between April and October.

Where to eat: For any meal, stop by Castaway, which has been serving guests for more than 70 years. Or make a night of it at Hide Away Café, which has an extensive wine list.

Where to stay: The Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club is set on the waterfront and gives you a taste of marina life. Lime Tree Bay Resort on Long Key has spacious townhomes for rent.

The Lower Keys

Mile marker: 40–4

After crossing the Old Seven Mile Bridge out of Marathon, you'll find yourself in the Lower Keys, where natural habitats and wildlife refuges thrive. It's no wonder this part of the Florida Keys is known as the Natural Keys. You might even want to consider taking an electric vehicle on this road trip so you don't disturb the animals.

Your best chance to spot a native Key deer, a subspecies of the Virginia white-tailed deer that somehow made its way south, may be in the National Key Deer Refuge, comprised of 9,200 acres stretching from Bahia Honda Key to Sugarloaf Key on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. More than 20 endangered and threatened plant and animal species can be found within the refuge. Take a quiet walk at dusk or dawn for your best chance to glimpse a Key deer, or join a ranger-led tour to learn more about the area.

Aside from all the eco-friendly fun, Stock Island is well worth a stop. Their maritime history goes back generations, and the marina is filled with shrimping and fishing boats. Artists have been flocking to Stock Island, too, and share their works in galleries dotted across the small island.

Best beach: The shallow, clear water and white sand at Calusa Beach make it a locals' favorite. The beach is a perfect spot for snorkeling too.

Where to eat: In addition to the freshest of seafood, Big Pine Rooster serves up ribs and a special-recipe meatloaf. Or sip like the locals at No Name Pub, located on Big Pine Key.

Where to stay: Consider the waterfront Sugarloaf Lodge , stay in an Airstream at Big Pine Key Resort  or pop a tent on one of the reserved campsites at Bahia Honda State Park.

Mile marker: 4–0

You've made it to the end! Closer to Cuba than Miami, Key West is known for its nightly sunset celebrations, party atmosphere and laissez-faire vibe, but it's really so much more.

If you're a writer or bookworm, you'll certainly want to make plans to visit the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where you should keep an eye out for the famous six-toed cats. Then wander through Key West's Bahama Village, a 12-block area of historic homes and restaurants.

Consider a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park, about 70 miles west of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico, where you'll find some hidden gems . The island, accessible by boat or seaplane, is popular for snorkeling and feeling like you're on your own private island, not to mention touring the Civil War–era fort.

Best beach: Fort Zachary Taylor Beach—or Fort Zach, as locals call it—predates the Civil War and boasts the island's very best sandy stretch.

Where to eat: No visit to Key West is complete without a meal at Blue Heaven, where you can dine with wandering roosters for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or snag a spot on the tiny balcony at Santiago's Bodega for tapas and flowing wine.

Where to stay: The boutique Gardens Hotel , the adults-only Kimpton Hotels Ridley House  or the new Capitana Key West , to name a few. Wherever you stay, you're sure to find your place in Key West, and it's likely you'll follow so many others' lead and start planning your return visit before you even leave.

Art and history in the Florida Keys

Road-tripping from Key Largo to Key West, it's easy to appreciate all the natural beauty. That said, the Keys aren't just a terrific destination for eco-travelers, but artists and history buffs too.

It's easy for artists to find inspiration throughout the Florida Keys. Fortunately for road-trippers, there are many spots to stop and admire their work. One of the largest artists' communities in the Florida Keys is Stock Island in the Lower Keys, just about three miles from the commercial area of Key West. What was once a shrimping boat marina is now a blend of fishermen and painters, sculptors and other artisans who have created an energetic and supportive community.

For history buffs, in addition to Pigeon Key in Marathon and the Civil War–era Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park, other must-stops in Key West include the Audubon House & Tropical Gardens, Harry S. Truman Little White House and the Southernmost Point in the continental United States.

Planning your Florida Keys road trip

Now that you're inspired to hit the road, it's time to start planning. After budgeting for a road trip , your next step is to decide whether you will travel south from Key Largo to Key West, or north from Key West to Key Largo. Or maybe you'll opt for a roundtrip.

If you're starting off in Key Largo, it's important to note that the Florida Keys Overseas Highway begins at the Miami-Dade/Monroe County line. So if you're flying to Florida, Miami International Airport (MIA) is the way to go. If you begin in Key West, the airport (EYW) is on the island.

CHICAGO -- Pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked roadways in Illinois, California, New York and the Pacific Northwest on Monday, temporarily shutting down travel into some of the nation's most heavily used airports, onto the Golden Gate and Brooklyn bridges and on a busy West Coast highway.

In Chicago, protesters linked arms and blocked lanes of Interstate 190 leading into O'Hare International Airport around 7 a.m. in a demonstration they said was part of a global “economic blockade to free Palestine,” according to Rifqa Falaneh, one of the organizers.

Traffic in the San Francisco Bay Area was snarled for hours as demonstrators shut down all vehicle, pedestrian and bike traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge and chained themselves to 55-gallon drums filled with cement across Interstate 880 in Oakland. Protesters marching into Brooklyn blocked Manhattan-bound traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. In Eugene, Oregon, protesters blocked Interstate 5, shutting down traffic on the major highway for about 45 minutes.

Protesters say they chose O’Hare in part because it is one of the largest airports. Among other things, they’ve called for an immediate cease-fire in the war between Israel and Hamas.

Anti- war protesters have demonstrated in Chicago near daily since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people. Israeli warplanes and ground troops have since conducted a scorched-earth campaign on the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli offensive has killed more than 33,700 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count but says women and children make up two-thirds of the dead.

O'Hare warned travelers on the social platform X to take alternative forms of transportation with car travel “substantially delayed this morning due to protest activity.”

Some travelers stuck in standstill traffic left their cars and walked the final leg to the airport along the freeway, trailing their luggage behind them.

Among them was Madeline Hannan from suburban Chicago. She was headed to O'Hare for a work trip to Florida when her and her husband's car ended up stalled for 20 minutes. She got out and “both ran and speed walked” more than a mile (1.6 kilometers). She said she made it to the gate on time, but barely.

“This was an inconvenience,” she said in a telephone interview from Florida. “But in the grand scheme of things going on overseas, it’s a minor inconvenience.”

While individual travelers may have been affected, operations at the airport appeared near normal with delays of under 15 minutes, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

Inbound traffic toward O’Hare resumed around 9 a.m.

Near Seattle, the Washington State Department of Transportation said a demonstration closed the main road to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Social media posts showed people holding a banner and waving Palestinian flags while standing on the highway, which reopened about three hours later.

About 20 protesters were arrested at the Golden Gate Bridge demonstration and traffic resumed shortly after noon, according to the California Highway Patrol. The agency said officers were making arrests at two points on the interstate, including one spot where roughly 300 protesters refused orders to disperse,

“Attempting to block or shut down a freeway or state highway to protest is unlawful, dangerous, and prevents motorists from safely reaching their destinations,” the agency said in a statement.

Oregon State Police said 52 protestors were were arrested for disorderly conduct following the Interstate 5 protest in Eugene, Oregon, about 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Portland. Six vehicles were towed from the scene.

New York Police made numerous arrests, saying 150 protesters were initially involved in the march around 3:15 p.m., but that number quickly grew. The bridge was fully reopened by 5 p.m.

In Chicago, dozens of protesters were arrested, according to Falaneh. Chicago police said Monday that “multiple people” were taken into custody after a protest where people obstructed traffic, but they did not have a detailed count.

JD Martinez update: Mets DH ‘very unlikely’ to join team on West Coast swing

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza and president of baseball operations said that it is “very unlikely,” that the 36-year-old slugger will travel with the team for their west-coast road trip to Los Angeles and San Francisco, which extends to April 24.

“My expectation is [he will make his debut] shortly thereafter if not on the trip,” Stearns said. “I don’t think he needs to show anything, he just needs to get into a spot where he says ‘I’m good to go. I feel good and I’m ready.'”

Martinez was going through an abbreviated spring training and was starting a minor-league rehab assignment when he encountered lower-back stiffness last week. He received an injection to the area during a brief shutdown and began swinging a bat on Monday. 

“We’ll see where we’re at but in reality, I think [his debut will come] when we get back,” Mendoza said. “It’s just where he’s at right now. He has to go through BP… before he goes back into a few games.”

Martinez did not sign his one-year, $12 million deal with the Mets until a week before the 2024 season began, which immediately slated him for a late start to the year as he ramped up. He was coming off an All-Star season with the Los Angeles Dodgers in which he slashed .271/.321/.572 (.893 OPS) with 33 home runs and 103 RBI but he also dealt with similar back stiffness, which has been commonplace at times throughout his career.

“We talked to his representation plenty and JD did a very nice job of keeping himself in shape during the downtime before he signed,” Stearns said. “I think as he’s gotten going, he ran into the same level of back stiffness that plagued him over a couple different points in his career. He was pretty confident with the way the Dodgers treated it last year really helped him out… so we opted to treat it the same way.”

“We didn’t have a defined time frame,” Stearns continued. “I certainly think if he didn’t have this back stiffness, he’d be here already. So the back stiffness probably delayed this a little bit. I think JD wants to get out there as quickly as possible… I’m cognizant that this is something that has popped up for him over the course of his career and we’ll knock it out and get him going.”

CHICAGO (AP) — Pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked roadways in Illinois, California, New York and the Pacific Northwest on Monday, temporarily shutting down travel into some of the nation’s most heavily used airports, onto the Golden Gate and Brooklyn bridges and on a busy West Coast highway.

In Chicago, protesters linked arms and blocked lanes of Interstate 190 leading into O’Hare International Airport around 7 a.m. in a demonstration they said was part of a global “economic blockade to free Palestine,” according to Rifqa Falaneh, one of the organizers.

Traffic in the San Francisco Bay Area was snarled for hours as demonstrators shut down all vehicle, pedestrian and bike traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge and chained themselves to 55-gallon drums filled with cement across Interstate 880 in Oakland. Protesters marching into Brooklyn blocked Manhattan-bound traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. In Eugene, Oregon, protesters blocked Interstate 5, shutting down traffic on the major highway for about 45 minutes.

Protesters say they chose O’Hare in part because it is one of the largest airports. Among other things, they’ve called for an immediate cease-fire in the war between Israel and Hamas.

Anti- war protesters have demonstrated in Chicago near daily since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people. Israeli warplanes and ground troops have since conducted a scorched-earth campaign on the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli offensive has killed more than 33,700 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count but says women and children make up two-thirds of the dead.

O’Hare warned travelers on the social platform X to take alternative forms of transportation with car travel “substantially delayed this morning due to protest activity.”

Some travelers stuck in standstill traffic left their cars and walked the final leg to the airport along the freeway, trailing their luggage behind them.

Among them was Madeline Hannan from suburban Chicago. She was headed to O’Hare for a work trip to Florida when her and her husband’s car ended up stalled for 20 minutes. She got out and “both ran and speed walked” more than a mile (1.6 kilometers). She said she made it to the gate on time, but barely.

“This was an inconvenience,” she said in a telephone interview from Florida. “But in the grand scheme of things going on overseas, it’s a minor inconvenience.”

While individual travelers may have been affected, operations at the airport appeared near normal with delays of under 15 minutes, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

Inbound traffic toward O’Hare resumed around 9 a.m.

Near Seattle, the Washington State Department of Transportation said a demonstration closed the main road to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Social media posts showed people holding a banner and waving Palestinian flags while standing on the highway, which reopened about three hours later.

About 20 protesters were arrested at the Golden Gate Bridge demonstration and traffic resumed shortly after noon, according to the California Highway Patrol. The agency said officers were making arrests at two points on the interstate, including one spot where roughly 300 protesters refused orders to disperse,

“Attempting to block or shut down a freeway or state highway to protest is unlawful, dangerous, and prevents motorists from safely reaching their destinations,” the agency said in a statement.

Oregon State Police said 52 protestors were were arrested for disorderly conduct following the Interstate 5 protest in Eugene, Oregon, about 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Portland. Six vehicles were towed from the scene.

New York Police made numerous arrests, saying 150 protesters were initially involved in the march around 3:15 p.m., but that number quickly grew. The bridge was fully reopened by 5 p.m.

In Chicago, dozens of protesters were arrested, according to Falaneh. Chicago police said Monday that “multiple people” were taken into custody after a protest where people obstructed traffic, but they did not have a detailed count.
