train

Queensland has a distinctive spirit, thanks to a lush coastline bursting with flora and fauna, delicious produce, relaxed locals and adventures aplenty. At Queensland Rail Travel, we believe there’s no better way to explore this and more, than via the magic of a rail getaway. Skip the hassles of traffic or craning for a glimpse through the clouds and instead, view this beautiful part of the world from just outside the window of your long-distance train.

If you are interested in exploring the Sunshine State with the convenience of a train, then here are five different train trips you need to try in your lifetime:

Spirit of Queensland

Operating between Brisbane and Cairns five days a week, the Spirit of Queensland is your answer to taking a quick and relaxing trip away. The relaxation starts the moment you step aboard – enjoy modern and spacious seating, a variety of entertainment options on individual touch screens and delicious meals, prepared by a chef, using Queensland-sourced produce.

Enjoy the nostalgia of rail travel as you put your feet up and unwind in your leather Premium Economy seat, or indulge in the ample space of your innovative RailBed – a conveniently spacious seat by day, lie-flat bed by night. Make friends with fellow passengers from the comfort of your seat, or head to the 24-hour licensed Galley Car for fresh faces and a change of scene.

Throughout your journey, our friendly staff are taking care of the ‘little things’ so you don’t have to and our driver is safely navigating the tracks, to ensure you arrive at your destination, comfortably and happily. Wherever you’re headed, a journey aboard the Spirit of Queensland will get your trip on the right track. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/spiritofqueensland

Spirit of the Outback

The quintessential outback rail adventure starts when you hop aboard the Spirit of the Outback. An overnight journey to remember, you’ll depart bustling Brisbane, meandering through heritage towns over 1,325 km, before arriving in the heart of Longreach. Enjoy the open car layout of economy, settling in with your reclinable seat and footrest, before accessing the economy lounge for a change of scene, or a warming meal from the Shearers Rest Galley.

Travel in a First-Class sleeper and enjoy country-style hospitality, where you’ll find a complimentary amenity bag full of items made and sourced in Queensland, so you can make full use of the showering amenities stationed at the end of each carriage. Head to the Shearer’s Rest, a relaxing communal lounge area exclusive to First Class customers – and the backdrop to many new friendships – or take your tablet to watch the latest onboard entertainment.

Delight in all-inclusive meals as you sit down to linen dressed tables for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tuck into meals prepared by our chef using the best Queensland produce, inspired by the region. Upon disembarking, explore all that the region has to offer – towering skies, sunburnt earth, a mix of modern and prehistoric points of interest and always, moments you just have to see first-hand to believe. However, you choose to travel aboard the Spirit of the Outback, be sure to pack your camera and a sense of adventure to make the most of this heritage-inspired journey into this fascinating land. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/spiritoftheoutback

Skip the traffic and enjoy fast and convenient access to Queensland’s iconic coastal destinations when you take the Tilt Train. Travelling between Brisbane and Rockhampton, reaching speeds of up to 160km per hour and transporting over 180,000 passengers per year, you can rest assured it’s a reliable means of reaching your destination.

Enjoy your reclinable economy seat and foot rest while you flip through the pages of your complimentary magazine, or watch the onboard entertainment on overhead screens. If you’re heading to the city or up the coast for work, step aboard and enjoy the comfort of a larger Business seat, a complimentary juice and newspaper or, make the most of the travel time and plug your electronics into the power point at your seat – don’t miss a beat! Head to the Galley Car for a pick me up cup of coffee or something light to eat, or wait for the trolley service, so you can enjoy some snacks throughout your journey.

Explore more of Queensland and take the train to stunning destinations such as the Southern Great Barrier Reef – disembark and head to Mon Repos to witness turtle hatchlings making their way to the ocean; explore the delicious and vibrant produce of the Bundaberg Burnett region, or head to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island for a dip in Lake Mackenzie…the choice is yours! Wherever you’re headed or why, whether travelling solo or in a group, the Tilt Train is a convenient value for money means of taking your next business trip or relaxing holiday.

The Inlander

Away from the coast, there’s a world of discovery and adventure ahead. Step aboard The Inlander and explore another part of Queensland’s vast outback. Whether travelling onboard as part of a Mount Isa Discovery Experience package, or following your own itinerary, you’ll find yourself in awe of the sheer space and changing landscapes.

Settle back into your forward facing, reclinable seat and put your feet up using the available footrest, while you dive into the pages of a book or, your complimentary onboard magazine. Whether stopping off along the way or, completing the entire 977km journey, the train is airconditioned for your comfort, and there are showers and amenities at the end of each carriage, so that you arrive feeling relaxed and refreshed. If you’re in need of a change of scene, head to the Lounge for a friendly chat with other travellers.

If your itinerary allows, we recommend some regional exploration – perhaps you’ll make friends with Hughie, the 7m Muttaburrasaurus and find an impressive fossil collection at the Flinders Discovery Centre in Hughenden? Or spot endangered marsupial, the Julia Creek Dunnart?

Upon disembarking in Mount Isa, explore the town’s prehistoric exhibits at the Riversleigh Fossils Interpretive Centre or go deep underground and tour the coal mines – some of the biggest in the world. The town’s mineral wealth is something to behold – with copper, silver, lead and zinc being mined here. This is truly a trip for those who like to head off the beaten track and uncover a region’s stories. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/theinlander

The Westlander

Jump aboard The Westlander and join us for a relaxing journey into the heart of Queensland’s deep west. As you depart Brisbane, settle into your comfortable seat as you dive into a book or the pages of your complimentary onboard magazine.

Throughout your 777km journey you’ll travel across the ancient Great Dividing Range, through rich farmlands of the Darling Downs, right through to the welcoming town of Charleville. You’ll be passing some of the state’s most established wine producing regions and rich grazing country. Whilst onboard, you can head to the Lounge for a friendly chat and change of scene.

When you arrive in Charleville, head to the Cosmos Observatory during the day to view sunspots and solar flares, heading back at night to marvel at the twinkling stars scattered above – view distant stars, planets and nebulae! Visit one of the region’s most vital functions – the Royal Flying Doctor Service and meet some of the amazing people that keep it running.

For the ultimate outback experiences, acquaint yourself with the ‘Cunnamulla Fella’, immortalised by Australia’s favourite bush poet, Slim Dusty… And before you head home, try your luck fossicking at Quilpie’s renowned boulder opal! Jump aboard The Westlander and embark on a journey of discovery. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/thewestlander

Kuranda Scenic Railway

Uncover one of the world’s great railway journeys aboard Kuranda Scenic Railway. Enjoy relaxing in refurbished vintage carriages as the train winds up the mountain to Kuranda, the village in the rainforest.

Travelling across 55 bridges and through 15 handmade tunnels, you’ll learn what an engineering feat the railway is, a proud testament to North Queensland’s pioneers.

You’ll travel past steep ravines and see lush vegetation so close you could almost reach out and touch it. You’ll pass the impressive heights of Stoney Creek and stop at the grand Barron Gorge Falls. Enjoy the wares of Kuranda locals in the village centre or wander off on one of the walking trails nearby.

Travel in classic Heritage Class or upgrade to Gold Class and delight in locally-sourced food and beverages, as you wind your way up or down the mountain – however you do it, it’s a rail journey not to be missed. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/kurandascenicrailway

Take a step into Queensland’s pioneering past and journey aboard the Gulflander as it travels the Heritage-listed Normanton to Croydon line. Affectionately said to go from ‘nowhere to nowhere’, the line was built to connect the once bustling river port of Normanton with the rich goldfields of Croydon.

To combat seasonal impacts, the line was laid with patented steel sleepers – to this day it retains most of the original sleepers laid between 1888 and 1891 and is the only railway line in Queensland still measured in miles! Although the gold rush is long past, the Gulflander continues to connect its outback community with vital services and visitors with a fascinating history. Enjoy the treasure trove of history and discovery at charming Normanton Station, wandering amongst displays and vintage locomotives and carriages.

Enjoy stops at Blackbull Siding for a cuppa and to stretch your legs and visit Critter’s Camp to spot the local creepy crawlies… All the while, our Savannah-accredited guide and driver will regale you with their detailed knowledge of local flora and fauna, before delighting you with tales of the region’s colourful characters!

If you can, turn it into a bigger adventure and explore Karumba – enjoy a sunset cruise on the Gulf of Carpentaria, learn something new at Karumba’s Barramundi Discovery Centre or, try your luck with a spot of fishing! Whether travelling solo, in a group or with your favourite companion, the Gulflander and Normanton to Croydon line is a ‘must-do’ experience. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/the-gulflander

6 best day trips from Brisbane this summer

Nov 22, 2021 • 6 min read

A young woman surfing on a sunny summers day in northern NSW, Australia

Surfers Paradise is known for its nightclubs, but there's a lot more to the Gold Coast © Gary Parker / Stocksy United

Queensland ’s sunny capital finds itself in a rather lucky position. Not only is Brisbane one of Australia ’s fastest-evolving cities in the trend stakes but it’s also within day-tripping distance of some of the state’s best beaches, national parks, and unique townships.

And with the Australia slowly re-opening to visitors from interstate, as well as overseas, Brisbane and the Queensland coast tourism sector has never been more excited to see you. So get ready for a multitude of sunshine-soaked adventures – you may want to consider extending your holiday plans this year – with our pick of the best places to visit near Brisbane.

An aerial view of the sunny coast of surfers paradise with skyscrapers backing on to beaches

Theme parks, surfing and hiking the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast might be one of Australia’s most misunderstood cities. Often pigeonholed as a party town, the Goldie hosts more than 50km of pristine sand so, as logic would suggest, there’s far more to this beach city than just the nightclubs of Surfers Paradise . In the north, thrill seekers can hit the theme parks and families can picnic and play at the waterfront Broadwater Parklands . Further south, surfers can ride competition waves at Snapper Rocks (or anywhere along the coastline really) and nature-lovers can stomp the tracks in Springbrook National Park.

Don’t be fooled into thinking Gold Coasters are as casual about their food as they are about their lifestyle – gastronomy is serious game and there are plenty of A-grade restaurants to choose from (plus quality beans for coffee aficionados). Hip cafes and watering holes abound, including in bright and buzzy Burleigh Heads, which lays claim to a hatted restaurant (Australian code for best in show) –  Rick Shores – and Burleigh’s lesser-known but no-less-cool neighbour, Palm Beach, which is fast becoming a haven for swanky bars (try Suga or The Scottish Prince ). Busy Broadbeach and chilled-out ‘burbs like Mermaid Beach and Coolangatta are also worth checking out. And do pop into Surfers Paradise – it is a lot of fun.

How to get to the Gold Coast:  The Gold Coast is just under an hour's drive south of Brisbane. Regular trains depart from Brisbane Central and the journey takes around an hour and 40 minutes.

Unwind from Caloundra to Noosa on the Sunshine Coast

Like the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast is hard to define, but is a little less zing and a little more calm than its southern counterpart. Noosa is a highlight because of its boutique shopping, trendy cafes and one of the most beautiful national parks you’ll lay eyes on (that turquoise water…), while Mooloolaba and Caloundra offer quieter alternatives (and the latter has an award-winning brewery by the beach ).

The Sunshine Coast hinterland trades ocean spray for clean mountain air, and Montville and Maleny are two standout locales. Montville is an adorable one-horse town that peters on a mountain ridge. The main street is lined with cafes, galleries and shops, and the nearby Kondalilla National Park is laced with walking trails and waterfalls.

Maleny, 9.3 miles (15km) south, is an equally endearing town that supports a thriving dairy industry. Visit Maleny Dairies and Maleny Cheese to sample the region’s award-winning produce, then stop in at the Maleny Botanic Gardens for views over the Glass House Mountains and to see more than 700 native and exotic birds at Bird World. Duck off the highway to visit Australia Zoo – founded by the late Steve Irwin – or to pick up local handicrafts and snacks at the Eumundi Markets .

How to get to the Sunshine Coast:  Regular trains depart from Brisbane Central to Nambour, the region's main train station. The journey takes an hour and 50 minutes.

A woman is walking on a narrow trail through the undergrowth in Lamington National Park, Queenland.

Explore lush Lamington National Park

Lamington National Park hit the news in 2019 when bushfires swept through the area, but all is not lost. For starters, Lamington is big (more than 20,000 hectares big), and is split into two sections – Green Mountains (also called O’Reilly) and Binna Burra. Sections of the Binna Burra forest were damaged, but much of the park and the businesses within it remain open.

Join a monthly cooking class using regional produce at the Wild Lime Cooking School (which can be topped or tailed with a swim in the Christmas Creek or Lost World rock pools), or enjoy a massage and sweeping valley views at O’Reilly’s Lost World Spa . Nearby hiking options range from easy 30-minute circuits to multi-hour treks through soul-cleansing rainforest. Visit the Queensland Parks and Forest website for up-to-date trail information.

How to get to Lamington National Park:  The park is 68 miles (110km) south of Brisbane, which equates to about a two-hour drive.

A road leads towards a white lighthouse at the end of the Cape Byron Walking Track; it stands on a rocky cliff, with waves crashing beneath.

Iconic Byron Bay mixes beaches with boutique shopping

Byron Bay is a two-hour drive from Brisbane, crossing the state border into New South Wales . Arguably one of Australia’s most popular and well-known beach towns, Byron is old-school hippie and modern-age hipster rolled into one. Here, shoes are optional and bathers are commonplace within the compact town centre, but there’s an air of sophistication about the place. Boutique shops stock stylish local handicrafts and fashion labels, the dining is on-trend, and if you fancy staying overnight, Byron Bay accommodation spans a spectrum from backpacker to chic.

The town itself hums with energy for much of the day and night (Byron manages to wake up early after partying into the wee hours), but it’s easy to escape into nature. Follow the Cape Byron Walking Track to the lighthouse – the most easterly point of mainland Australia – or take a dip in the crystalline waters of Wategos beach , where dolphins frolic and waves gently spill over a wide sand bar.

How to get to Byron Bay:  The trip takes two hours by car (102 miles). Coaches are available from Brisbane Roma St Bus Stop to Byron Bay daily and the journey takes a little over two and a half hours.

The easiest day trip from Brisbane: North Stradbroke Island

Stradbroke Island (or ‘Straddie’ to the locals) is split into north and south. North Stradbroke is the most easily accessible of our favorite day trips from Brisbane via a 30-minute boat ride from Cleveland. Hire a 4WD for ultimate freedom (including beach cruising potential) or buy a daily bus pass to get between the hubs of Point Lookout, Dunwich and Amity.

Main Beach has a powerful swell and is popular with surfers and body boarders , while Cylinder Beach is a calmer, patrolled cove better suited to families and lazy afternoons. The more secluded Deadman’s and Frenchman’s beaches are dotted with rock pools, and inland there’s a freshwater lake system. This includes Blue Lake, referred to as the ‘deep silent pool’ in the local indigenous language, and Brown Lake , tinged by the colour of native tea trees. Whale watching is a popular pastime on Straddie, with migrating humpback whales a common sight between June and November.

How to get to North Stradbroke Island: Ferries depart daily from the Brisbane suburb of Cleveland and take around 30 minutes. You can travel as a foot passenger or bring your own vehicle.

A shallow pool surrounded by large rocks on Tamborine Mountain, looking out over an expanse of rainforest.

Rainforest and glow worm caves await on Tamborine Mountain

Tamborine Mountain sits between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It’s another of Queensland’s magnificent hinterlands strewn with rainforest, criss-crossed by walking trails and peppered with cute shops and eateries. The Gallery Walk on Long Road has more than 50 cafes, restaurants and stores selling handicrafts and knick-knacks, then there are a number of wineries and breweries nearby, plus the Tamborine Mountain Distillery , which has a trophy cabinet laden with more than 300 awards.

Tamborine is also known for its glow worms glittering in a purpose-built cave . Guided tours run throughout the day.

How to get to Tamborine Mountain:  It's just an hour's drive south of Brisbane (45 miles).

25 of the best day trips from Brisbane

Looking for fun and fabulous day trips from Brisbane. We have 25 top picks here from the beach to the rainforest, lakes and rivers, wildlife, family fun and adventure.

Broadbeach Gold Coast

Brisbane is a great city to both live and visit.  It’s casual and laid back but there are options here for culture, great foodie experiences and more.  It doesn’t have to hurt your pocket either. If you’re visiting the city make sure you also see our top ideas for free things to do in Brisbane .

The sub-tropical climate you’ll find in Brisbane is ideal, it doesn’t hit the scorching highs in summer that some parts of the country do but winter is mostly spent in shorts and t-shirts with plenty of beach visits all year round.

The city has it’s own surf patrolled (man made) beach and plenty of parks and attractions but as with any city after a day or two, or a solid 9-5 week, you’re probably going to want to get outside and explore further afield so we’ve put together a list of our 25 best options for day trips from Brisbane.  You’ll find plenty of variety here to suit everyone – couples, friends, families and singles.

Table of Contents

1. Glasshouse Mountains

2. lamington national park, 3. north stradbroke island, 4. moreton island, 5. currumbin wildlife sanctuary, 6. sea world, 7. bribie island, 8. tamborine mountain, 9. springbrook national park, 10. toowoomba, 12. burleigh heads, 13. mooloolaba, 14. south stradbroke island, 15. northern gold coast beaches, 16. whale watching on the gold coast, 17. wivenhoe dam, 18. eumundi, 19. mary cairncross reserve, 20. southern gold coast beaches, 21. obi obi gorge, 22. byron bay, 23. the northern new south wales beaches, 24. currumbin sculpture festival, 25. sand safari, our recommendations for day trips from brisbane.

Wild Horse Mountain - Glasshouse Mountains

The Glasshouse mountains are at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast only an hour from the city.  This distinctive National Park includes 12 distinctive peaks that are the remnant cores of 26 million year old volcanos that once towered above the region.

Some of the peaks have paths you can walk up easily such as Wild Horse Mountain where this photo was taken from, other’s require climbing expertise and equipment for those we prefer the walking trails that circumnavigate them from below.  There are a few cafes in the area, our pick is the Lookout Cafe for its gorgeous outlook, then just carry on a few hundred meters further up the mountain for the lookout park with incredible views, walking trails and wildlife.

Use this guide to plan your visit to the Glasshouse Mountains

Elabana Falls from O'Reillys Rainforest Retreat

Heading south of Brisbane to the Gold Coast we are often drawn to the beauty of the Lamington National Park.  There are 2 sections to this park which are accessed in very different ways so make sure you are headed to the right part.  The Green Mountain section is our favorite and commonly known as O’Reillys for the family that originally settled here and a man that carried out an inspiring rescue against the odds when a passenger plane crashed in the area back in 1937.

Today you’ll find a variety of walks many suitable for the whole family in pristine rain forest and some great destinations on these walks such as the Elabana Falls shown above.  There’s car parking, BBQ’s, plenty of picnic space and a shop and cafe here.  If you’re looking for something longer than a day trip there’s a variety of accommodation right at the park entrance from camping to luxe apartments with private outdoor spa’s.  We’ve stayed here a couple of times and if you’re interested this article will give you an idea of whats available and some of the other activities.

If you love Australian wildlife this is a sure spot to see pademelons, a small species in the wallaby and kangaroo family and the bird life is extensive, we’ve seen a huge variety here including the elusive Alberts Lyrebird and rainbow pitta.

Find some of the best walks in the Lamington National Park

Gorge Walk on North Stradbroke Island

Just a 25-minute ferry trip across Moreton Bay is North Stradbroke Island, a laid back island paradise right on the door step of the city.  There’s a lot to love about a day trip to ‘Straddie’ as it’s known locally but for us, it’s a tie between the wildlife, scenery and fabulous beaches.  There’s also a couple of good cafes popped up on the island recently.

You can take a car across on the car ferry but you’ll have just as much fun jumping on the bus that meets the boat and heading up to Point Lookout.  This is where you’ll find stunning surf beaches, the gorge walk, lookouts and more amazing beaches.

If you visit in the ‘winter’ you can watch the whales passing on their annual migration, pods of dolphins playing in the surf and sea turtles feeding in the gorge.  There’s also a big mob of kangaroos and you’ll usually spot at least some of those.  Surfing and beach days are popular on the island all year round.

We met one young Kiwi visitor who was so impressed after having dolphins join her on her wave while body surfing that she was making an impromptu decision to turn her day trip into an overnight stay hoping to repeat the experience again the next day.

Tangalooma whale watching off Morton Island

Moreton Island is sometimes referred to as Tangalooma after the major resort on the island.  It’s another top spot for a day trip from Brisbane but there is plenty to see and do out here on the island so it’s also a popular spot to stay a few days.

The boat runs out here from Brisbane in the morning and after a short stop you can rejoin it during the ‘winter’ months to head out whale watching.  Early in the trip we spotted turtles, dolphins and off the coast of Morton Island is where I saw my very first dugong .  The whales are in transit from Antarctica to the Great Barrier Reef but they still show a natural curiosity in checking out boats so the sightings were good.

We had lunch on the boat then when you get back to there island there’s time to explore.  There are wrecks offshore that have formed into reefs and provide a home for a good variety of sea life, you can hire a kayak to take a look if you don’t want to snorkel or dive.  You can also hire cycles with sand tires or head out sand tobogganing.  As a day visitor we were able to use the resort facilities and we stayed on into the evening taking the last boat back to see the great sunset and the other special attractions of Tangalooma, the visiting dolphins.

Early in the evening a pod of wild dolphins come into shore and under a special licence you are able to feed them here.  The history of this goes back a long way and led to Nari, one of the dolphins a decade or so back being able to be rescued, healed and returned to his pod after he was badly mauled by a shark (you can read more about Nari in the article below).

Care is taken to ensure they are given locally caught fish and that what they receive only makes up only a small portion of their daily diet so they eat and play naturally the rest of the time.  Not every dolphin in the pod comes in, and those that do don’t come in every day, trained staff supervise every encounter to ensure it is done in a safe way and of course you must not touch the dolphin.

For more information see:  Whales, dugongs, dolphins and more at Morton Island

Koala at Currumbin Wildlife Park

While I’ll highlight many spots to encounter Australia’s wildlife in their natural setting near Brisbane in other sections of this post,  visitors may want to include a wildlife sanctuary during their time in Brisbane to see a variety of Australian animals and for the educational aspect.

For that, we’d recommend either Currumbin or the nearby  David Fleay Wildlife Park .  These two have a strong conservation focus, they prioritise local wildlife over exotics their priority is animal welfare, conservation and education.

Dolphins at Sea World

There are a number of theme parks within easy access of Brisbane that make a great family day trip.  Sea World in Australia is heavily involved in marine rescue and many of the birds and animals here are rescues that were unable to be released back to the wild for various reasons related to their own safety.

Sea World is located on The Spit on the Gold Coast around an hours drive from Brisbane.  It’s also possible to get here with public transport or joining a tour that includes transport but we’d highly recommend driving so you can stop off at some of the stunning beaches in the area.

In addition to the animals there’s also water ski and jet bike shows, thrill rides, a water park and the Nickelodeon area featuring shows and rides for the younger family members.

Read our tips for a day at Sea World Australia   |  Check out deals on Sea World tickets

Bribie Island

Another of Queensland’s large sand islands, Bribie, is attached to the mainland by a causeway so you won’t even need a boat to get out here.  On the inland side of the island are calm waters perfect for a day at the beach with the family, on the seaward side there’s some incredible surf.

Bribie has had increased residential development in recent years but most of the island is National Park with no roads so you’ll need a 4-wheel drive, permit and sand driving experience to see more than the southern tip.  That said, the southern tip is beautiful and you don’t need to walk very far from the car parking to find a good stretch of sand to yourself.  The island is also a bird watchers paradise and has some interesting walkways and history to explore.

Mount Tambourine

Mount Tamborine is a relaxed hinterland area halfway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.  It’s only an hours drive to experience this beautiful area of rain forest on the Scenic Rim.  The National Park here is divided into 6 distinct parts containing walking tracks, lookouts, waterfalls and other attractions.  Some popular sections we enjoy are the Witches Falls and Cedar Creek tracks.

On Mount Tamborine, you’ll also find the Gallery Walk with restaurants and interesting shops to explore, a botanic garden, the Skywalk where you can observe the rain forest section from above and within, glow worm caves plus a variety of foodie treats from cheesemakers to wineries.

Twin Falls Circuit

Another spot on the Scenic Rim with excellent National Park walks and fabulous scenery is the Springbrook National Park.  There’s a whole list of walks and lookout’s we enjoy down here but two I’d highly recommend when visiting are the Twin Falls circuit shown above and the Natural Bridge , click on either link for more visitor information.

It’s quite possible to do one in the morning, visit another spot such as Goomoolahra Falls for your picnic lunch then complete the other walk in the afternoon.

Toowoomba lookout

Toowoomba is a provincial city 125 km inland from Brisbane.  A day trip out here can include the views from the impressive lookout , hiking trails and one of the best Japanese gardens in Australia.

For foodies, you’ll want to check out the farmer’s markets, farm gate sales and cellar doors.  In the city itself, there’s also a thriving cafe culture that’s sprung up in recent years and a fabulous collection of street art murals .

Our comprehensive guide to exploring Toowoomba

5 top ideas for a short break in Australia on the next long weekend - Noosa

At the northern end of the Sunshine Coast, about a 90 minute drive from Brisbane is Noosa.  This popular holiday area also makes a fun and easy day trip from the city.  The main beach of Noosa is popular with surfers and can be quite busy but walk a little way down towards the river and the beach is just as good and almost deserted a lot of the time.  Keep walking and you’ll come to a sheltered calm water swimming beach and the river.  From here is a great place to watch the sunset.

The Noosa National Park has 15 km of walking tracks within the forest, along the cliff top and down on the beaches.  If you do the Coastal Track be aware that Alexandria Bay is illegally used as a nudist beach especially the southern end which you need to pass to rejoin and complete the 10.8 km return walk to Sunshine Beach. There are a number of excellent shorter walking tracks and a variety of wildlife including koala are regularly seen within the park

The view from Burleigh Heads

The Burleigh Heads National park is only 27 hectares but squeezed into this space you will find rainforest habitat, eucalypt forest, groves of distinctive coastal pandanus, tussock grassland, coastal heath, creeks and mangroves, the rocky foreshore and glorious sandy beaches.

The rainforest circuit where this photo is taken from is 2.3 km return, there’s also an ocean view track which we normally like to take on the return walk.

If you enter from the northern end off of the Gold Coast Highway and turn into Goodwin Terrace you’ll find public parking here and also an excellent selection of local cafes to complete your day trip experience.

Mooloolaba beach

Mooloolaba is one of my personal favourites on the Sunshine Coast.  You have a long stretch of gorgeous sandy beach here, a shady boardwalk, many park areas, the river and a break wall between the ocean and the river that’s a popular walk and fishing spot.  You’ll also find Sea Life Sunshine Coast which we’ve reviewed previously and a wide selection of cafes, restaurants and accommodation.

There is so much to see and do in Mooloolaba and it’s only an 80-minute drive from Brisbane and makes an ideal day trip destination.

South Stradbroke Island

There are a number of tours that run out to South Stradbroke Island from the Gold Coast, it’s actually only 200 metres off the end of the Spit so it’s a quick trip over then you can spend your day as you wish, enjoy the facilities of the Couran Cove Resort, swim and explore the 22 km of sandy beaches & 1800 hectare conservation park.

For something a bit different you can kayak out to Wavebreak and South Stradbroke Islands  on a full day trip with time to explore, lunch, relaxation and activities on the island.  We’ve kayaked out with a group a few years ago and it was way easier than we expected.

Broadbeach

The most famous and longest established of the Gold Coast beaches is Surfers Paradise, it’s still a lovely stretch of sand with a wide promenade and some great cafes, restaurants and accommodation.  Over the years Broadbeach & Mermaid Beach, one beach south, has become our favourite being a little more laid back and home to some of our top picks for cafes on the Gold Coast.

All three are surf beaches with wide expanses of soft white sand and have designated patrolled swimming areas.  Also in the northern group of beaches to explore are Main Beach, the Spit and the Broadwater.

Tangalooma whale watching off Morton Island

We’ve been whale watching many times along the east coast of Australia.  Our most recent outing was on the Gold Coast.

This migratory group of humpback whales make their way from Antarctica to the Great Barrier Reef each year.  They are estimated to number over 30,000 based on an annual whale census and their numbers are recovering annually.  This means you have an excellent chance of some good sightings between August and October each year.  We booked for the morning trip as winds and waves tend to increase later in the day and saw a good number of whales, if you’re unlucky and for some reason don’t see a whale you can take a second trip for free.

Check Gold Coast whale watch prices and reviews

Wivenhoe dam

The Wivenhoe Dam was built on the Brisbane River in the 1970s to protect the city from floods.  Not only is it now the main water supply for the city but it’s also a great recreational destination for swimming, kayaking and sailing.

There are a number of recreational parklands around the lake and not all of them allow for water based activities with restrictions for safety reasons around the spill wall.  This one closest to the spillway is one that doesn’t allow direct access to the water but it has an extensive park and picnic areas and it’s a great spot for koala spotting.

Eumundi Market

The town of Eumundi is well known for the huge and diverse Eumundi market, an ever-growing market encompassing local artists, craft, produce and more.  Originally it was all outdoor stalls but developments in recent years have expanded the market area including some undercover options.

The town has bars and cafes to stop and relax if you want somewhere to stop for a while or grab something from the market itself and you’ll find plenty of places to sit on the grassy banks.  There are regular events here too, one we really enjoyed is the Eumundi body art festival .

Just 15 minutes away is the Noosa Botanical Gardens on the shores of Lake Mackenzie and Eumundi is on the way to Noosa so the two can be easily combined into a day trip,

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

In the Blackall ranges on the Sunshine Coast, you will find the Mary Cairncross conservation park around 90 km from Brisbane.   There are 55 hectares of sub-tropical rainforest on the mountain here and a well developed walking path and boardwalk in parts.  Despite that it’s an excellent spot from seeing local wildlife including birds, pademelons a small marsupial in the kangaroo family and even the endangered mountain crayfish, a blue coloured found only in a couple of mountain ranges around here above 240 metres.

In addition to the walkway, you’ll find parklands, BBQ and picnic facilities an information centre and cafe.  A visit here is ideal to combine with exploring the mountain villages of Maleny and Montville.

Currumbin Beach

With 66km of stunning Gold Coast beaches, it’s going to take a lot of time to visit them all so it’s necessary to make some choices to narrow it down.  The attraction of the southern Gold Coast beaches including Burleigh, Currumbin, Tugan and Kirra are that they are a little less developed and quieter than the northern beaches.

They are all strikingly beautiful surf beaches with wide white sandy stretches, many have dune areas and others have lagoon, mangrove and creeks heading inland.

Obi Obi Creek

The Obi Obi gorge is a diverse natural area on the Sunshine Coast near Maleny.  It’s located next to the Baroon Pocket Dam and from here you can take a 7 km return walk on the Baroon Lookout track, the views from the track are fabulous and you generally see diverse birdlife along the track.  Not far from the car park there’s a detour down to the gorge and swimming hole.  Another alternative is rock-hopping along the gorge but be prepared to get wet in parts.

The are picnic and BBQ facilities nearby at the lake edge and across the dam wall or head back up the road into Maleny for a variety of cafe options.

Sunset in Byron Bay

Byron Bay is a 2-hour drive from Brisbane and I have to admit I do prefer to stay down there for a night or two when we go but we’ve done it as a day trip several times with friends and visitors and if that’s what works for your itinerary then I’d definitely make this trip for the day, you can see and do plenty in that time.

Byron Bay retains it’s laid back surf vibe despite its ever-increasing popularity and while getting a car park can be a challenge some days you are sure to find yourself a wave and space on the sand at one of it’s 9 stunning beaches.  Byron is an iconic Aussie destination and we highly recommend a visit.

Read more about the Byron Bay beaches and other attractions in this article

Fingal Head

Around an hour and a half from Brisbane, you’ll reach the northern New South Wales beaches including Fingal Head, Kingscliff and Salt beach.  It’s a popular holiday destination and increasingly growing as a residential subdivision but still relatively quiet.

The beaches here are gorgeous for long relaxed walks, beach days and there’s a wide walking and bike path shaded in part by the casuarina trees along the beach edge at Kingscliff.  From Fingal head and many of the other headlands along here you’ll see whales passing during the migration season and don’t miss the Giants Causeway, an interesting basalt lava rock formation that extends under the water to Cook Island.

Swell Sculpture Festival

My 2 final suggestions for day trips from Brisbane are annual events. There’s a big range of these and something to suit all interests, these are just 2 examples that make a great addition to your time in the region.

The Swell Festival has been running for many years during the month of September and includes many local and international artists who create sculptures, often of significant size on the beach and foreshore in Currumbin.  During the festival, you’ll find coffee vans and food trucks offering a variety on top of the local cafes, live music and other entertainment.  The sculptures are also lit at night adding a different way to enjoy them.

Helpful tips for planning a visit to the Swell Festival

weekend train trips from brisbane

The Sand Safari is another annual event, this time in February and held predominantly at Surfers Paradise although related displays pop up around the Gold Coast.  The enormous sandcastles are created by international and local artists along the wide promenade in front of the beach.

The artworks usually take the shape of fantasy and cartoon characters which are loved by kids and adults alike.  They are made entirely of sand and water then sprayed with an environmentally safe sealant to help them stand up to the elements for the duration of the festival.

During the event you an vote for the one you like the best and there’s an extra-large central display which is worked on by many artists for you to watch the creators at work and ask any questions.  The festival is perfect combined with a day at the beach or exploring Surfers Paradise, the best known of the Gold Coast beaches.

The Top 13 Day Trips From Brisbane

weekend train trips from brisbane

Surrounded by rainforests, beaches, mountains, and quaint country towns, Brisbane is an ideal base for exploring all that Queensland has to offer. As you get to know this diverse state, you will also encounter the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have lived across the continent now known as Australia for over 60,000 years. Brisbane itself is located on the lands of the Yuggera people. To the north, the traditional custodians are the Waka Waka and Gubbi Gubbi peoples, while to the south you'll find yourself on Bundjalung Country.

Whether you're stopping by on your way to the Great Barrier Reef or spending some time to get to know the city, don't miss these top day trips from Brisbane.

Ipswich: Historic Buildings and Great Food

Matthew Murray / Getty Images

This settlement was founded in the early 1800s as a coal mining town. It is home to some of Queensland's oldest and best-preserved heritage buildings and is the location of a modern foodie renaissance. In the part of Brisbane Street known as Top of Town (between Ellenborough and Waghorn Streets), you'll find vintage stores, fashion and homewares boutiques, and quirky cafes. We recommend Rafter & Rose for coffee and cakes and Fourthchild for something more substantial.

Getting There: Less than an hour south-west of Brisbane, Ipswich can be reached by car or train.

Travel Tip: Don't miss the beautiful gardens and parks of Ipswich, including Kholo Gardens , Ipswich Nature Centre , and Nerima Japanese Gardens .

Lamington National Park: Ancient Landscapes

Thurtell / Getty Images

This popular national park covers a section of the Gondwana Rainforests in the Gold Coast hinterland. This is a World Heritage Area that protects the remnants of the ancient landscape that once covered Australia. The mountains are known as Woonoongoora in the Yugambeh language and have spiritual significance to local First Nations groups.

The park is located on the southern edge of the Scenic Rim—a chain of mountains running inland from the coast—and offers camping, picnic areas, lookouts, and hiking trails.

Getting There: Around an hour and a half south of Brisbane, you'll need a car for your trip to Lamington National Park. The roads in the park can be narrow and winding, so be sure to drive carefully.

Travel Tip: Keep an eye out for rare flora and fauna like the spotted-tailed quoll and Albert's lyrebird, as well as ancient Antarctic beech trees and hoop pines.

Lockyer Valley: Farms, Museums, and Wineries

 Pobblebonk / Getty Images

The rolling hills of the Lockyer Valley rise between Ipswich and the regional city of Toowoomba. This is a traditional farming region, packed with chances to sample the local produce and experience quirky country attractions. You can visit a lavender farm , learn about organic and sustainable farming , eat at a retro garage , check out the Queensland Transport Museum , and finish your day out at Preston Peak Wines .

Getting There: Public transport connections are available, including via the Brisbane to Toowoomba bus and the train to Rosewood. If you'd rather drive, the Lockyer Valley is an hour and a half west of Brisbane.

Travel Tip: If you've got a few days spare in your itinerary, take the chance to immerse yourself in the agricultural lifestyle of the Lockyer Valley at a local farm stay like the one at Fordsdale Farmstay .

Caloundra: Gateway to the Sunshine Coast

James Bartram / EyeEm / Getty Images

Brisbane is sandwiched between two iconic Aussie vacation destinations, with the Sunshine Coast to the north and the Gold Coast to the south. Caloundra is the gateway to the Sunshine Coast. This relaxed beach town has a family-friendly atmosphere thanks to the many protected beaches along Pumicestone Passage that offer respite from the East Coast's notoriously wild surf. In the hinterland, the picturesque Glass House Mountains dominate the landscape.

Getting There: Caloundra is located just an hour and a half's drive from Brisbane. You can also take the train to Landsborough and change onto a bus to Caloundra. The public transport trip will take around two hours.

Travel Tip: Stop by Pocket Espresso Bar at Moffat Beach or White Picket Fence at Bulcock Beach for brunch while you're in town.

Shorncliffe: A Quiet Seaside Suburb

Colin Baker / Getty Images

The bayside suburbs of Shorncliffe, Sandgate and Brighton in Brisbane's north-east make a refreshing escape from the city. Here, life moves at a slower pace, whether you're watching the sunrise, grabbing a coffee from a local cafe or sharing fish and chips on the waterfront. The heritage houses that line the waterfront make for a pleasant stroll, while Shorncliffe pier is one of the city's most iconic landscapes.

Getting There: It'll take you 40 minutes to reach Shorncliffe by car or 50 minutes on the train from Brisbane.

Travel Tip: The protected water of the bay are ideal for paddle boarding, sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Contact Surf Connect for all the details.

Moreton Island: Hiking, Snorkeling, and Swimming

Jules Ingall / Getty Images

Moreton is a sand island known for its beaches, hiking trails, sand dunes, snorkeling, diving, and plentiful wildlife. Most of the island is covered by a national park , but beachside camping is available, as well as more traditional accommodation options.

There is plenty to do and see within walking distance of Tangalooma Resort, where the ferry from Brisbane drops off passengers, but if you want to venture further afield you will need to book a tour or bring your own car on the ferry .

Getting There: The pedestrian ferry journey to Tangalooma Resort takes 75 minutes, with multiple departures daily from the Holt Street Wharf.

Travel Tip: The Traditional Custodians of Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) are the Quandamooka people and there are many cultural sites on the island, including shell middens and a stone quarry. If you come across one of these sites, be careful not to disturb it.

Dayboro: The Ideal Roadtrip Destination

The town of Dayboro is another quaint road trip destination. With a population of only around 2,000 people, it punches well above its weight thanks to venues like the Dayboro Art Gallery , Ocean View Estates winery and restaurant , and the nearby Mount Mee. The mountain's main attraction is Dahmongah Lookout Park , with views over the Glass House Mountains, Caloundra, and Moreton Bay.

Getting There: Northwest of Brisbane, Dayboro can be reached by car from Brisbane in just under an hour.

Travel Tip: Half an hour further north, the town of Woodford is home to a garden cafe and a classic local pub .

The Gold Coast: A Glitzy Resort City

 Mike Mackinven / Getty Images

The Gold Coast stands out as Australia's most traditional resort city, with theme parks, nightlife, and high-rise hotels on the beach. With 35 miles of beaches (including the famous stretch at Surfer's Paradise and local favorite Burleigh Heads), the Gold Coast is a great place to take some surfing lessons, go snorkeling, or even try skydiving.

Refuel at Elk Espresso or Bam Bam Bakehouse before shopping for a new swimsuit at Pacific Fair or browsing the weekend markets. If you've got a few days to spare, you can stay at the luxurious Palazzo Versace (yes, that Versace) or boutique gem the Island .

Getting There: The Gold Coast is an hour's drive south of Brisbane and can also be reached by train in around the same amount of time.

Travel Tip: If you're celebrating a special occasion, be sure to treat yourself to a meal at Yamagen or Social Eating House .

Springbrook National Park: Rainforest, Waterfalls, and More

Masahiro Noguchi / Getty Images

Springbrook National Park is located in the Gold Coast hinterland. Like Lamington National Park, Springbrook is part of the  Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area . The main attraction is the Natural Bridge, where water pours through a hole in the roof of the cave. At night, especially between December and March, sparkling glowworms light up the cave.

Getting There: Springbrook is just under two hours' drive south of Brisbane.

Travel Tip: Lucky visitors may encounter pademelons (a type of rainforest wallaby) on the way to the Best of All lookout .

Tambourine Mountain: Marvel at the Glowworms

RobertDowner / Getty Images

At Tambourine Mountain, you can see glow worms all year round in an artificial cave . This area is packed with adventurous activities for families, including the Tambourine Rainforest Skywalk , Botanic Gardens , Thunderbird Park , and the Treetop Challenge . There are plenty of waterfalls and hiking trails on the mountain itself, which is mostly a part of a national park. Start with the Curtis Falls and Cedar Creek Falls walks. There are plenty of accommodation options in town, ranging from camping to boutique hotels.

Getting There: Tambourine Mountain is an hour's drive south of Brisbane.

Travel Tip: For the adults, Fortitude Brewery and Tambourine Mountain Distillery offer tastings of beer and spirits respectively.

North Stradbroke Island: Watersports and Whale Watching

Hakan Deliç / Getty Images

Arguably Brisbane's most popular day-trip destination, North Stradbroke Island is the world’s second-largest sand island. (The largest, Fraser Island, can be found further north in Queensland.) Stradbroke has something for everyone, with SUPing, surfing, snorkeling, fishing, and hiking, as well as whale watching between June and October. Buses and taxis are in service on the island, which also has lots of accommodation options.

Getting There: Ferries and water taxis regularly depart from Cleveland (40 minutes by car or train from Brisbane city center) and take around 50 minutes to reach North Stradbroke Island.

Travel Tip: The island is known as Straddie for short, or Minjerribah to the Traditional Custodians, the Quandamooka people.

Coochiemudlo Island: Relax by the Beach

mvaligursky / Getty Images

Coochiemudlo Island is protected from the open sea by North Stradbroke Island on its eastern side, with deserted beaches and calm waters for SUPing, kayaking, and fishing. Depending on the time of year, you may be able to spot dolphins, dugongs, turtles, and whales from the shore. The permanent population is only around 700 people and you can easily get around on foot, although boat and bicycle hire is available.

Getting There: This little island paradise is not far away, just a 10-minute ferry ride from Victoria Coast south-west of Brisbane.

Travel Tip: If you're traveling on a budget, you can pack a picnic and make the most of the free barbecue areas. There are no grocery stores on the island, but you can also dine in at the beach kiosk, cafe, or hotel restaurant.

Byron Bay: Surf, Shop, and Party

TripSavvy / Ana Alarcon

Initially developing as a hippie and surfer hub during the 1960s and '70s, today Byron is one of Australia's hottest beach destinations with world-famous hotels , restaurants , and boutiques. Of course, the real drawcard is the beaches, known for their incredible surf and postcard-perfect settings. Head to Main Beach to be in the center of the action or Wategos for a bit more solitude.

Getting There: Byron is a two-hour drive south of Brisbane or around three hours on the bus.

Travel Tip: Keep an eye out for humpback whales between June and November and beware of the crowds in late December and early January.

35 of the Best Weekend Getaways Brisbane Offers!

Unlike my usually super organised and ordered lists… I’m assuming whoever is reading this is mostly a local, so these weekend getaways near Brisbane are absolutely in no particular order – well they are – just the order that they popped into my head!

So scroll through until you find one of the short breaks from Brisbane, which is just perfect for you!

Mt Tambourine

Curtis Falls Mt Tamborine

When it comes to a long weekend Brisbane trip, Mt Tambourine is a great choice.  Located in the Gold Coast Hinterland, just an hours drive from Brisbane; Mt Tambourine is perfect whether you’re after something for the family or looking for Brisbane romantic getaway packages.

Amongst the gorgeous rainforest, valleys and waterfalls, there is so much to do in Mt Tambourine.  You can spend your days exploring one of many walking tracks, take a dip in rock pools, visit local wineries and try delicious produce.  While in the evening, you can snuggle with your loved ones in lovely little cabins around the fireplace.

A weekend down at Mt Tamborine is one of the great weekends away from Brisbane that will have you rested and rejuvenated as you embrace nature.

If Mt Tambourine sounds like one of the relaxing holiday destinations you want to experience, you can find out more about things to do in Mt Tambourine here and where to stay in Mt Tambourine here .

Coolangatta

weekend train trips from brisbane

If the beach is more your cuppa tea, then one of the best weekend getaways from Brisbane is down at Coolangatta.  Around Coolangatta are some of my all time favourite Gold Coast beaches , including the beautiful little Rainbow Bay.

Located right on the Qld / NSW border, Coolangatta has a great range of laid back hotels and luxurious accommodation options.  There is a super chilled out vibe around the streets of Coolangatta, with plenty of different restaurants, cafes and shops along the waterfront and large open grassy areas with playgrounds for the kids.

Coolangatta is a great place to come for those who love to surf, although it is equally great for those who want to swim and relax on the beach.  It’s one of the perfect beach weekend trips Brisbane offers.

Click here to check out where to stay in Coolangatta .

North Stradbroke Island

North Stradbroke

North Stradbroke Island would have to be one of the ideal weekend escapes from Brisbane!  Whether you take your car over on the barge or opt for the faster passenger ferry.  We usually enjoy camping over at Amity Point, but there is also a range of excellent North Stradbroke Island accommodation options to choose from.

The beauty of North Stradbroke Island is you can do as little or as much as you like.  Go swimming of course, sandboarding, explore the gorgeous Blue and Brown Lake, take the Gorge walk at Point Lookout and spot native wildlife, including koalas and kangaroos, as well as plenty of marine life such as dolphins, pelicans and even whales.

Whilst you could fit all of this into one of your Queensland weekend getaways, if you do want to take advantage of all that North Stradbroke Island has to offer, you may want to extend to 3 day trips from Brisbane.

While the cost of the barge over doesn’t make Straddie one of the cheap getaways Brisbane offers, it’s still one of our favourite nature getaways Brisbane has.

Get a full list of things to do at North Stradbroke Island here .

weekend train trips from brisbane

If the Sunshine Coast is calling your name, why not head to Montville in the hinterland.  Montville makes for a great weekend away near Brisbane.  Many people looking for romantic getaways near Brisbane go here, but it is also perfect for a family weekend or a group of friends wanting to get away.

Montville is a picture perfect town located on the edge of the Blackall Range.  The area is home to some gorgeous European inspired architecture as well as stunning valley views.  You can spend your days strolling around town exploring the art galleries, boutiques and cafes, waterfalls and rock pools in Kondalilla National Park, or heading down to Baroon Pocket Dam for some kayaking.

There is a range of accommodation options from basic cabins to glorious, luxurious resorts just perfect for those after one of the romantic weekend getaways Brisbane offer.  You can check out some accommodation options here .

So if you’re after some cozy Brisbane short breaks, certainly consider a few days in Montville for your next weekend away QLD.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Just down the road from Montville is Maleny, which makes for a great weekend away from Brisbane.  This gorgeous hinterland town sits on the mountain’s edge with dramatic views across the Sunshine Coast region.  The drive here alone is worth the trip, as you drive up the mountain you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous countryside views.

While you’re in Maleny, you can spend your days visiting all the local cheese factories, wineries and breweries, browsing the local boutiques, enjoying long lunches at cafes and exploring the gorgeous nearby National Parks such as Mapleton and Kondalilla.

Like Montville, there is an excellent range of Maleny accommodation options on offer.  However, if you can, I highly recommend having a splurge and getting a great place with a view, whilst it won’t be one of your cheap weekend getaways QLD – you’ll be so pleased you did!

weekend train trips from brisbane

In terms of Brisbane weekend getaways, Stanthorpe is also a lovely choice, particularly in the colder winter months.  Stanthorpe is a rural town a few hours away from Brisbane, close to the NSW border and is the ultimate destination for wine lovers – but don’t worry, it is super family friendly too!

The most popular thing to do in Stanthorpe is to visit all the wonderful wineries in the area.  The area is also well known for its delicious local produce such as apples, cheese, truffles and olives.  The area is close to some beautiful national parks like Girraween and Bald Rock, which have great walking tracks.

There are some great cabins available for families or for couples; there are some pretty unique luxurious accommodation options.  We personally recommend the Granite Brewery Retreat as they have some lovely cabins for families.

Whether you’re taking the kids, your partner or a group of friends, Stanthorpe is one of the best short trips from Brisbane, making it a great QLD getaway!

Get a full list of things to do in Stanthorpe here and where to stay here.

weekend train trips from brisbane

One of my all time favourite short getaways from Brisbane is Noosa.  It has a great laid back vibe, and there is just so much to do in Noosa as well as the perfect place to do very little too!

Spend your days exploring the gorgeous beaches and views in the Noosa National Park, as well as the Noosa Main Beach.  I also recommend you hire a boat or a kayak and go out into the Noosa Spit – here; you can find your own private sand island to chillax on.

There is also plenty of shops to explore along Hastings Street as well as cafes and restaurants.  Noosa is also in the perfect location to explore nearby regions around the Sunshine Coast and take a day trip to the world famous K’gari .

We just love Noosa; it’s one of our personal favourite weekends away Brisbane offers.

If Noosa is on your list of Brisbane escapes, you can get a full list of things to do in Noosa here and where to stay here .

Lamington National Park

weekend train trips from brisbane

Some of the best weekend trips from Brisbane are found in many nearby national parks, such as the World Heritage Lamington National Park.  This area has some of the world’s most extensive subtropical rainforests and has excellent views across the Scenic Rim.

Of course, while visiting the Lamington National Park, you can spend your days venturing into the rainforest, exploring a range of walking tracks that will take you past gorgeous waterfalls and rockpools.  There is also some great wineries and restaurants in the area too.

Many people choose to stay at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat , where you can enjoy guided wildlife walks, segway tours and the popular Tree Top Walk. However, for the ultimate rainforest experience, why not stay at Nightfall, where you stay in the most luxurious tents #glamping, surrounded by the rainforest.

Whether you’re after romantic getaways from Brisbane or short holidays from Brisbane with kids, the Lamington National Park is a great choice all year round for weekend getaways QLD.

Click here for tips on even more things to do around Lamington National Park.

things to do in Caloundra

If you’re looking for one of the sunny beach weekend escapes Brisbane offers, Caloundra is the perfect location. Caloundra is a casual coastal town on the Sunshine Coast and is a super popular destination, particularly amongst families.

There are many gorgeous beaches to choose from, including Kings Beach, a popular surf beach or the calmer waters of Bulcock and Golden Beaches, along the Pumicestone Passage.  Other things to do in Caloundra include boat cruises, kayaking, exploring the local street art, and having long lunches in one of the many waterfront cafes and restaurants.

Caloundra offers a range of great accommodation options, from basic self contained accommodation to some gorgeous resorts.  For families, I personally recommend the Oaks Resort as they have some fantastic facilities for the kids.

Caloundra is also well positioned for exploring the various Sunshine Hinterland towns and attractions.

If Caloundra ticks all your boxes for short holidays QLD, you can find out more by clicking here for a full list of things to do in Caloundra and for all the best accommodation click here.

Cotton Tree

weekend train trips from brisbane

Another popular weekend getaway from Brisbane is Cotton Tree.  Located along the banks of the Maroochy River and just a few minutes’ walk from the Maroochydore Beach, this is the ideal spot for those after a super chilled and relaxed weekend away.

The best thing about Cotton Tree is having the choice between the calm waters of the River mouth as well as the surf of Maroochydore Beach – so you have the best of both worlds!  Plus, along the Riverbank are lots of grassy areas with playgrounds, and walking and bike tracks.

The little dining and shopping precinct of Cotton Tree is super chilled and great for long lunches.  The area also has some great markets each Sunday. If you want to go further afield, there is the Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre and, of course all the great attractions of the Sunshine Coast such as Australia Zoo, Sea Life, the Sunshine Coast hinterland, and stacks more .

When it comes to where to stay at Cotton Tree, I recommend the Cotton Tree Holiday Park which has a range of accommodation options, including beach houses, cabins and tent sites.  Check out our full review on the Cotton Tree Holiday Park here.

So if you’re looking for overnight stays near Brisbane, do yourself a favour and head off to Cotton Tree.

Click here for tips on even more things to do around Cotton Tree.

Couran Cove Resort– South Stradbroke Island

We talked about North Stradbroke Island above, but Couran Cove Resort on South Stradbroke is also one of the best weekend getaways Brisbane offers.  Couran Cove is a short ferry ride from the Gold Coast, perfect for overnight trips from Brisbane or even a day trip.

There is a range of great activities to keep the entire family entertained at Couran Cove.  For those that love the water, you can spend your days swimming, fishing, surfing, kayaking and SUPing.  Out of the water, there are some beautiful walking and bike tracks to explore.  There is also plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife too.

There is a range of different accommodation options at Couran Cove, from fully self contained rooms to small studios. In addition, several different dining options include fine dining to casual dining by the pool or beach club.

Whether you’re after a peaceful weekend retreat Brisbane offers or a weekend full of adventure, Couran Cove Resort has something for everyone.  It’s one of the lovely holiday destinations near Brisbane for your next Queensland getaway.  Click here to check out their accommodation options.

Lake Moogerah

weekend train trips from brisbane

A lovely place to go for a relaxing weekend surrounded by a gorgeous landscape is Lake Moogerah.  Located around an hour and a half drive from the city, this is perfect for a Brisbane weekend getaway, Queensland.

Lake Moogerah is a dam and so has plenty of water surface for a range of water activities.  Here you can spend your days fishing, kayaking, SUPing, water skiing or swimming.  The area is also great for bushwalking with the Mount Edwards track just across the dam wall and lots of other walking trails in the area.

This is the perfect place for those who just want to relax, with the gorgeous lake and mountains as a backdrop.  The sunrises and sunsets are amazing and with no light pollution, the night sky here is perfect for stargazing.

There are a few different camping spots around Lake Moogerah , or you can stay in cabins or a house at the Lake Moogerah Caravan Park , as well as some other houses near Haigh Park.

So for country escapes near Brisbane, consider a weekend at Lake Moogerah.  For those short on time, it also makes one of the best weekend drives from Brisbane.

Click here for tips on even more things to do around Lake Moogerah.

Surfers Paradise

Things to do in Surfers Paradise with kids

Surfers Paradise is one of those places that’s perfect whether you’re looking for family weekend road trips from Brisbane or even a girls weekend Brisbane getaway.  It’s ideal for those that like to be in the centre of it all, because in Surfers Paradise you’ve got it all – a great beach, loads of fun attractions and great restaurants and cafes.

During the warmer months, you can spend your days swimming at the beach or visiting tourist attractions such as Ripley’s Believe it or not, climb the Q1 SkyPoint, play putt putt golf, go to Time Zone, take a ride on the Aquaduck or cruise around the Gold Coast canals.

There are also heaps of different options in terms of accommodation in Surfers Paradise.  There is some great family self contained accommodation options as well as fancy hotel suites.  We like staying at the Novotel or the Paradise Resort is also a firm favourite for families thanks to its impressive facilities for kids.

So if you’re after quick getaways from Brisbane with plenty to do, then Surfers Paradise might be the perfect destination for you.

Click here for a full guide of things to do in Surfers Paradise and where to stay here for one of your next QLD weekend getaways.

Springbrook National Park

Springbrook Natural Arch

Not that far from the glitz and glamour of the Gold Coast is Springbrook National Park in the Gold Coast Hinterland.  Just 90 minutes from Brisbane, this is the ideal spot for the gorgeous mountain getaways Brisbane offers.

Of course the main attraction here is the Springbrook National Park itself.  There are different walking tracks to explore and gorgeous waterfalls, including the 109m Purling Brook Falls, Natural Bridge and the Twin Falls.  There is also some great lookouts and beautiful spots for a picnic.

Springbrook is also well known for its dreamy little cabins tucked away in the rainforest.  It’s so peaceful, and you’ll love the sounds of the birds as well as enjoying a log fire during the colder months.  In fact, the cabins are so beautiful you could be forgiven for never leaving them over the weekend. For mountain getaways near Brisbane, add Springbook National Park to the bucketlist!

Click here for a full list of accommodation around the Springbrook National Park, perfect for romantic getaways, QLD.

With just 300 people, Kenilworth is a small charming town in the Mary Valley in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.  It is a rustic and rural area, around 50km from the coast and is home to dairy farms, olive groves and vineyards.

The nice thing about visiting the little town of Kenilworth is that it has maintained much of its original 1920s charm.  While you’re here, visit the Living History Museum and explore the local art galleries, shops and various eateries selling cheese, yoghurts and ice cream.

The area is surrounded by some lovely National Parks and forests, including the Conondale State Forest, perfect for horse riding, fishing and exploring the various walking tracks.

Kenilworth provides several accommodation options, including gorgeous little cabins and several camping grounds.  Kenilworth Homestead is particularly popular among families on Queensland getaways.

Best Gold Coast Resorts for families

Back down on the Gold Coast, Broadbeach is like the slightly quieter and more sophisticated neighbour to Surfers Paradise.  With gorgeous beaches, a great playground and loads of shops and restaurants, Broadbeach is another one of the brilliant weekend retreats Brisbane offers.

Of course, if you’re headed there during the Summer months, you’ll no doubt spend most of your time on the stunning beach.  On the foreshore, there is also an excellent playground which the kids will just love.

When you’re ready to escape the heat, there is the massive Pacific Fair Shopping Centre across the road, which has a zillion shops, cinemas and places to eat.  You also have the local Broadbeach Mall, which has a range of great shops, and you can catch the monorail over to the Star Casino, which has some family friendly places to eat.

Talking about places to eat – there are many great family restaurants and cafes in Broadbeach.  Plus, it’s a great base to explore nearby beaches, which are easy to reach with the tram right there.

Broadbeach has a great stack of accommodation to suit all types of travellers and budgets.  There are modest self contained apartments to super fancy suites and everything in between. If Broadbeach sounds like one of your next short stays Queensland has on offer – Click here for a full list of accommodation options.

Boreen Point

Another one of the best weekend road trips from Brisbane is Boreen Point.  Located in the Shire of Noosa, Boreen Point is a peaceful spot on the white sandy shores of Lake Cootharaba, which is the largest saltwater lake in Queensland. If you’re looking for relaxing weekend getaways, Boreen Point gets you back amongst nature, so you can disconnect to reconnect – with loved ones.

With its bush and lake setting, Boreen Point is a gorgeous spot and ideal for a range of water sports such as swimming, fishing, kayaking and SUPing.  The area also has several walking tracks and is the perfect place for wildlife spotting.  Plus, if you’ve got your own boat, you can head up into the Noosa Everglades – just gorgeous!

In terms of where to stay, campers have the option of either Boreen Point Campground or Habitat Noosa.  Habitat Noosa is also perfect for non campers with a range of cabins and some gorgeous glamping options.

Habitat has its own restaurant and café on site, or there is an excellent family friendly pub nearby (try the chicken parmi – my favourite!), and of course you’re not too far away from downtown Noosa here either.

If you’re looking for peaceful weekend breaks from Brisbane where you can get back to nature, add Boreen Point to your list.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Mooloolaba is a popular beach destination on the Sunshine Coast and is one of the best getaways near Brisbane.  This laid back coastal town has a range of attractions, making it ideal for a short break.

During the summer months, no doubt you’ll spend your days on the beach, swimming, SUPing or even surfing.  Mooloolaba is also home to one of Australia’s top dive spots, Ex-HMAS Brisbane.  Other things to do include visiting the popular SeaLife aquarium, enjoy a sunset cruise, or adventure rafting for the adrenaline junkies.

Along the esplanade, there are several shops to browse through and some great restaurants, cafés and bars.  Here you will also find accommodation galore, including some great family friendly self contained apartments as well as swanky hotel rooms.

Mooloolaba is also well positioned for exploring all the other local attractions around the Sunshine Coast.

Click here for a full list of where to stay in Mooloolaba for one of your next short getaways, QLD.

Girraween National Park

weekend train trips from brisbane

Just past Stanthorpe, Girraween National Park is a great destination for those who love the great outdoors.  Girraween National Park has over 117 square km of natural rock formations, including amazing granite boulders that balance on top of each other and gorgeous little rock pools.

There are several different walking tracks to explore here, all in varying lengths.  Choose the short 280m stroll to Bald Rock Creek or take the longer 11km return walk to Mount Norman.  One of the more popular hikes is the 4km return walk to the “Pyramids”.  While this walking track involves a steep climb up a granite rock face, the 360 degree views at the top make it well worthwhile.

In terms of accommodation, there are several campgrounds in the area, although I don’t recommend these during the colder months.  During the cooler months, book into one of the gorgeous little cabins complete with roaring log fires – making this the perfect Queensland getaway for couples. The Girraween Country Inn has cosy charm or the Girraween Environment Lodge is also great for the non-campers.

Although it is a 3 hour drive from Brisbane, Girraween National Park makes for one of the great long weekend getaways from Brisbane for the adventurous outdoor types.

Camping or Glamping on Moreton Island

weekend train trips from brisbane

Camping or glamping on Moreton Island should be one getaway Brisbane offers that should be on everyone’s bucket list!  Either take one of the weekend packages Brisbane offers with a tour group or arrange your own trip.

Whatever you choose, you’re in for a real treat at Moreton Island.  Spend your days snorkelling at Moreton Islands Wrecks and spot amazing marine life.  Go on a 4WD adventure around the island, go swimming, kayaking, or fishing.  In the evening, roast marshmallows on an open campfire or go kayaking with underwater LED lights.

If you arrange your own trip to Moreton Island, you can opt to take your 4WD across so you can camp on one of several different beaches.  But even those without a 4WD can still bring across their camping gear and set up camp where the ferry lets you off or stay in one of Castaways gorgeous glamping tents.  There are a few other accommodation options too – click here for full details.

While the journey across to Moreton Island is just 75 minutes by ferry, here you’ll feel like you’re a million miles away.  Easily one of the best Brisbane getaways!

Tangalooma Island Resort

Tangalooma Review

Another option for those wanting to visit Moreton Island is to stay at Tangalooma Island Resort.  This island resort is stunning, and although it’s just an hour ferry ride away from Brisbane, you’ll feel like you’ve travelled to a tropical island a million miles away.

Like we mentioned above, while staying at Tangalooma Island Resort, you can join in all the wonderful activities available on Moreton Island, including snorkelling the Wrecks, 4WDing, swimming, kayaking and fishing.  However, you can also use the resort facilities, including swimming pools, wildlife feeding, and the very popular dolphin feeding, which happens each night.

Tangalooma Island Resort has a range of accommodation options , including basic studio rooms, self contained apartments and spacious holiday homes.  There is also a range of restaurants and cafes on site.

For tropical Brisbane weekend trips, they don’t get much better than a few days at Tangalooma Island Resort.  Click here for our full Tangalooma Island Resort Review – one of the great holidays near Brisbane.

Somerset Dam

Somerset Dam is another excellent option if you’re after weekend getaways, Brisbane offers.  Just a short drive from Brisbane, this is a beautiful destination on the waters edge and a great place for a weekend getaway.

Somerset Dam is super popular for the water sports enthusiast.  The calm flat waters of Somerset are ideal for boating, kayaking, SUPing, water skiing, wakeboarding, or jet skiing.  There are designated swimming areas at Kirkleigh and the Spit, while the dam is perfect for fishing.

Somerset Dam is popular among campers, or some great cabins are available on the northern shores at the NRMA Lake Somerset Holiday Park.

If you want to holiday near Brisbane where you can forget all your worries, and retreat back to nature, Somerset Dam is the place for you.

Tallebudgera

weekend train trips from brisbane

Best known for its pristine sparkling clear creek, with the Burleigh Heads National Park on one side and Palm Beach on the area, Tallebudgera is in my view, one of the most picturesque areas on the Gold Coast.  This is one of the best beach getaways near Brisbane!

This is a pretty chilled area of the Gold Coast, where you’ll be spending your days mostly in the water.  The creek is super calm, making it ideal for swimming, kayaking and SUPing.  There is a sandy beach for the kids to play and along the banks of the creek is a range of bike and walking tracks and lots of picnic areas.

The best place to stay here is at the Tallebudgera Creek Tourist Park – but be warned, this place is always booked out and you will need to book well in advance.  But don’t worry, this tourist park isn’t just about camping and cabins; they have some pretty stunning luxurious waterfront villas too. There are a couple of other accommodation options available if Tallebudgera is on your list of short breaks Queensland offers – you can check them out here.

For families looking for weekend holidays from Brisbane, where everything revolves around the water, Tallebudgera would certainly be my recommendation.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Toowoomba is certainly not the destination that usually comes to mind when people think of weekend retreats near Brisbane. Still, with its quaint country charm, beautiful parks and historical gems, this Garden City can be a great place to visit.

Thanks to its 150+ parks and gardens, Toowoomba has earned the name of the Garden City.  Some of the more popular parks to visit include Queens Park, Laurel Bank Park, the State Rose Garden in Newtown Park, and the Japanese Garden are top picks.

Things to do in Toowoomba include a visit to the Cobb + Co Museum, checking out the city’s street art and a picnic at Picnic point.  If you’re reasonably fit, then you’ll also enjoy the climb up Table Top Mountain which has spectacular views once you reach the top.

Toowoomba has a range of lovely accommodation options .  Stay in an old Qld’er complete with roaring log fire and snuggle up with your loved ones – one of the best retreats near Brisbane.

So next time you’re looking for weekend trips around Brisbane – why not consider Toowoomba.

Bunya Mountains

weekend train trips from brisbane

The Bunya Mountains are a 2 hour drive from Brisbane and is a great option for those after a peaceful mountain escape.  The area is home to the world’s largest forest of bunya pines – hence its name.

Bush walking is the main activity here, with several different trails to choose from.  It’s also the perfect place for spotting wildlife, including several species of birds, wallabies and more.  Also, with pretty much zero light pollution, the Bunya Mountains is the ideal place for enjoying the stars.

In terms of accommodation, your only option is to camp or book a home in the area.  Unless you are visiting in the warmer months, one of the beautiful homes would be my recommendation because it can be particularly cold here.  Plus, the homes are lovely and most have gorgeous fireplaces, great for snuggling in front of and they offer great value for money – perfect for those after cheap getaways from Brisbane.    Check out all the homes available to rent here.

The Bunya Mountains is a great destination any time of the year. Still, being one of the only places in QLD where you can experience a real winter, it’s perfect if you’re after one of the winter weekend getaways Brisbane offers.

Click here for our full guide on a weekend away in the Bunya Mountains.

3.5 hours north of Brisbane, Hervey Bay is wedged between the mainland and the world heritage listed K’gari and is considered the whale watching capital of Australia.  During the months of mid July to October, this is the place to be to see humpback whales.  The water surrounding Hervey Bay is calm and perfect for whales to nurture their young calves – hence why it’s known as a whale nursery.

While whale watching is the most popular activity in Hervey Bay, the area does have around 14km of golden beaches to enjoy as well.  The calm waters are perfect for swimming and other watersports.  There are also walking tracks along the Esplanade and don’t miss a sunset and drinks at Enzo’s on the Beach.

Coolum is another gorgeous Sunshine Coast beach, just under a 2 hour drive from Brisbane, making it a great weekend getaway.  The coastal town is relatively quiet compared to some of the other Sunny Coast beaches, making it a beautiful place to come and relax for a few days.

Of course, the main attraction here is the gorgeous Coolum Beach, thanks to its pristine sandy beach and beautiful ocean, perfect for swimming and surfing.  However, another drawcard here is Mount Coolum, with visitors coming from all over to climb this rock and enjoy the spectacular views from the top.

Other fun things to do in Mount Coolum include visiting the Aqua Park, shopping along the esplanade and dining in the various beachfront restaurants and cafés.  Plus, Coolum Beach has an off leash dog friendly beach, so if you can find yourself some dog friendly accommodation, there is no need to leave your fur baby at home.

Ravensbourne is a gorgeous area located on the edge of the Great Dividing Range, just under 2 hours from the Brisbane CBD.  The area is full of gorgeous rolling hills, exceptional food and beautiful landscapes, making it just perfect for a weekend away.

The drive to Ravensbourne is just gorgeous!  Be sure to take the winding Esk-Hampton Road, which is said to be the region’s most beautiful drive.  You’ll pass Lake Wivenhoe, the Deongwar State Forest and drive through rolling green hills featuring livestock.

Spend your days in Ravensbourne exploring the various walking trails of the Ravensbourne National Park.  Check out Gus Beutel lookout for amazing views across the Lockyer Valley, which is also a lovely spot for a picnic. Bribie Island

weekend train trips from brisbane

Just minutes from the Brisbane CBD, Bribie Island is a beautiful island and perfect for a weekend getaway.  On Bribie Island, you have the choice of calm waters or surf beaches as well as a casual, welcoming community vibe.

Along with Moreton and North Stradbroke Island, Bribie Island is one of the three sand islands in Moreton Bay.  Bribie Island is the smallest of the three and one of the easiest to reach, thanks to connecting to the mainland by a bridge.

For those who prefer calm waters, the Pumicestone Passage is the perfect place.  This protected marine park is ideal for water sports and swimming and is an awesome spot to watch the sunset with the Glass Mountains in the background.

If you’re more into the surf, Bribie Island has a range of great surf beaches as well as wide sandy beaches and the Bribie National Park for 4WD enthusiasts.  There are also some great bushwalks where you can spot wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, dingoes and more.

Killarney is 2.5 hours from the Brisbane CBD, a rural town in the Southern Downs, just 6kms from the New South Wales Border.  This small country town is the perfect place to escape the city and be surrounded by rolling hills and mountain vistas and where visitors can spend their days exploring the various natural attractions.

The main reason people come to Killarney is for the gorgeous waterfalls along the Falls Drive.  You can see five different waterfalls within a short area, including Queen Mary Falls, Daggs Falls, Brown’s Falls, Upper Brown’s Falls, and Teviot Falls.  There are several walking tracks where you can get a closer look at these falls and also have the opportunity to spot wildlife such as echidnas, possum and more.  Also, don’t miss Carr’s Lockout for amazing views.

There is a caravan park close to the Queen Mary Falls or stay at gorgeous B&Bs.  Check here for accommodation in the area.

Wivenhoe Dam

weekend train trips from brisbane

Located just 1 hour from Brisbane in the Somerset Region, Wivenhoe Dam covers 33,000 hectares and is an ideal spot for those after a relaxing getaway in the great outdoors.  Unlike Somerset Dam, you’re unable to use watercraft with motors at Wivenhoe, so it is an excellent spot for those seeking a peaceful escape.

Here visitors can spend their day’s kayaking, swimming, sailing, fishing and exploring the various walking tracks.  There are two playgrounds in the area and large grassy areas perfect for kicking a ball around for families with young children.  And for any keen anglers out there, this is one of the best places in Australia for bass fishing.

If you want to stay at Wivenhoe Dam, you can camp at either Captain Logan Campgrounds or the Lumley Hill Campgrounds.

Just under three hours’ drive from Brisbane is Kingaroy, home to the largest peanut-processing plant in Australia.  With its stunning rolling countryside, fresh farm produce and great places to eat, Kingaroy is the perfect short escape for foodies as well as those just after a peaceful countryside getaway.

During the day, visit the Pottique Lavender Farm, a few wineries, and stop to taste local delights such as olives and cheese.  For the peanut lovers, you can’t skip a visit to the Kingaroy Heritage Museum as well as making a stop at the Peanut Van to taste Kingaroy’s most famous export.  While at night, it’s recommended you visit the Kingaroy Observatory to see the night sky in all its glory.

If you can, plan your visit to Kingaroy to line up with one of the festivals they have in town.  There are fabulous race days as well as festivals celebrating pumpkin and even bacon!

There is a range of gorgeous B&B style accommodation like the Hillview Cottages as well as Holiday Parks.  Click here for a full guide on where to stay.

Brisbane City

weekend train trips from brisbane

Lastly, why even leave Brisbane for a weekend away when you can enjoy a fabulous weekend in Brisbane .  This might sound a little weird if you live in Brisbane, but when was the last time you had a staycation in your own city – it’s actually quite fun.

One of the great things about a weekend in Brisbane is that many of the top attractions are free! You can visit museums, art galleries, cruise the river, swim, take guided tours, and get around the city completely free of charge.

If you plan your staycation during the warmer months, spend a few hours swimming at Southbank, followed by a meal at one of the Southbank restaurants and cafes.  Plus, of course there are the Southbank markets too and nearby you can easily spend an entire day checking out the Museum, Science Centre and Art Gallery.  Click here for more to do at Southbank.

In the centre of the CBD, don’t miss the Brisbane Museum, which even includes a free guided tour up the tower of City Hall.  If you’re a shopper, you can spend hours in the Queen Street Mall or for families, take the kids to Roma Street Parklands and the Botanical Gardens.  Then, at night, don’t miss the chance to see the Story Bridge lit up while having dinner at the Howard Smith Wharves.  Click here for more to do in Brisbane CBD.

There is, of course a stack of great accommodation options in Brisbane for families, but I really love Evolution Apartments , where you can get a well priced self contained apartment with fantastic river views. 5 easy must-do weekend trips from Brisbane

Weekend trips from Brisbane

One of Australia's biggest and best-loved cities, Brisbane , located on the East Coast of Australia between the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, is the perfect gateway to the great outdoors. But Brisbane offers more than a great base for exploring the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The city is also one of the cultural treasures of Australia and a great place to get to grips with the history and modern-day character of this continent-spanning country.

Brisbane is a great place to shop, dine, visit incredible art galleries, or take in an exciting sporting event. In fact, there's enough to do in Brisbane that it's hard to imagine ever running out of fun activities. Explore Brisbane CBD for as little as a couple of hours, and you'll find yourself swept up in the energy and atmosphere of this highly livable town.

But as enjoyable as time spent in Brisbane can be, there's more to this area than the city itself. After all, part of the charm of exploring any Australian city is knowing that there is some truly incredible scenery close by. So if you've seen enough of Brisbane, or you just want to get a better sense of what eastern Australia has to offer, consider these great weekend getaways from Brisbane. There's so much to see in this region that it would be a shame not to take advantage of it while you can.

Of course, exploring Australia's natural treasures is much easier if you travel lightly. Drop off your unneeded bags at a suitcase storage in Brisbane , and you can bring only what you need to enjoy adrenaline-fueled adventures or romantic getaways in this vibrant area. The best weekend getaways from Brisbane offer you everything from beautiful coastline to dense forest to mountain wilderness to cultural activities, so there's no excuse not to try them out for yourself.

Weekend trips from Brisbane to Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast is hardly a hidden gem. In fact, it's easily one of the most popular weekend getaways from Brisbane for locals and visitors alike. But sometimes, popularity is justified. There's so much to do here. Whatever you're into, you really can't afford not to consider the Sunshine Coast on your list of Brisbane weekend getaways.

Distance from Brisbane:

The Sunshine Coast sits around 100 km north of the city of Brisbane. That makes it easy to reach with a little over an hour of driving. Plus, this is one of the rare weekend getaways from Brisbane that you don't need a car for, as you can reach Sunshine Coast by a combination of trains and buses from Brisbane in around two hours.

Our activity recommendations:

Rainbow Beach: The perfect place for a romantic weekend getaway from Brisbane, this coastal town gets its name from the beautiful and colorful beach that sits at the water's edge. And there's more to do here than just enjoy the scenery, as great as that is. This is a good area for four-wheel driving, fishing, and exciting water sports, so if you want to get your Sunshine Coast adrenaline fix while you're here, you're in luck.

Sunshine Coast Hinterland: If you want a wilder experience of Australia than the white sand beaches of Sunshine Coast itself can offer, consider taking a trip into the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The star of many of the best weekend getaways from Brisbane, this region combines beaches and jungle with mountains to show Australia at its very best. Don't miss the Glass House Mountains, 16 dramatic and beautiful volcanic crags that dominate the surrounding area, or the gorgeous waterfalls of Kondalilla National Park.

SEA LIFE: This incredible aquarium will take you on a dive beneath the waves of the Australian ocean to encounter some of the incredible plants and animals that call it home. Marvel at the rich ecology of this area and come face-to-face with some of the ocean's most charismatic - and scary - residents.

Best season to visit:

Sunshine Coast has plenty of outdoor activities that make it especially popular in the Australian summer, which takes place from December to February. However, the cities and towns of the region have more than enough to offer, even in the winter. Plus, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland offers enough by itself for a memorable weekend getaway at any time of year.

Gold Coast weekend trips from Brisbane

Another legendary destination near Brisbane, Gold Coast offers a huge amount of activities ranging from laid-back and relaxing to fun and exciting. A fantastic location for weekend getaways from Brisbane no matter how you like to spend your time, Gold Coast has everything you need for the best weekend getaways in the area.

It's around 80 km from Brisbane to the town of Gold Coast. Expect the drive to take around one hour.

Surfers Paradise: Surfers Paradise is the central district of Gold Coast and is where you'll find the best restaurants, the most exciting nightlife, and many of the best attractions in the area. This is where the people of Brisbane come to enjoy the natural environment surrounding the city, so it certainly gets busy, especially in the summer season, but it's a fun place with a lively atmosphere that makes for great weekend getaways from Brisbane.

Gold Coast Hinterland: Just like Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast is surrounded by an enormous backcountry that is a fantastic playground for weekend getaways from Brisbane. The incredible scenery here encompasses mountains like Tambourine Mountain and dense rainforests as well as the beautiful coastline itself, so it's a fantastic place to explore, and almost the exact opposite of the busy urban life of Surfers Paradise.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary: Get up close and personal with the charismatic wildlife of Australia at this beautiful nature park. Home to kangaroos, koalas, and crocodiles, as well as dozens of species of beautiful birds, the park holds several interactive encounters where you can get closer to the animals and learn more about their care.

There's enough to do in Gold Coast that it makes a great destination for a weekend getaway at any time of year. Although there are tons of outdoor activities in the region, the city of Gold Coast itself has enough indoor activities you can enjoy no matter what the weather does.

Wildlife viewing near Brisbane

Ravensbourne National Park & Crows Nest National Park

Brisbane can sometimes seem surrounded by one National Park after another. You don't have to travel far from the city to encounter the stunning scenery of Australia on weekend getaways from Brisbane. These two national parks, only half an hour's drive apart, are a great place to start.

About 135 km from Brisbane, Ravensbourne National Park is the closer of the two parks to the city, requiring a drive of around two hours to reach.

Explore the rainforest: Ravensbourne National Park is the perfect weekend getaway if you want to do some hiking. Home to dozens of trails, this park will give you an intimate encounter with the rainforest that lies just outside of Brisbane.

Camping: Both of these stunning National Parks allow camping, and spending a night or two in the jungle will give you a deeper appreciation of the incredible nature of this part of Australia. Enjoy your weekend getaway roughing it in the bush, and if nothing else, you'll come back with a greater appreciation for the comforts of the city.

Wildlife viewing: Crows Nest National Park is home to some fascinating wildlife species, including wallabies and platypi. Explore the rainforest trails or even take a swim in the pools and rivers of the park and keep an eye out for the creatures that call it home.

Summer is the best time to visit a national park if you plan on hiking and camping since the warmer weather makes it fun to be outside. However, spring can also be a great time since the rivers and waterfalls are at their peak of power during this time.

North Stradbroke Island weekend trip from Brisbane

North Stradbroke Island

The world's second-largest sand island, North Stradbroke Island is a great place to encounter the wildness of the Queensland coastline. With several great activities to enjoy in the area, plus some good restaurants and places to stay, you won't run out of things to do on this popular island.

It's less than 60 miles from Brisbane CBD to North Stradbroke Island, but because you'll need to take a car ferry, it can take longer than you might think. Expect that journey to take around two hours. However, the bonus is that once you arrive, you'll feel even further away from the city than you really are.

Eco tour: Go in search of native Australian wildlife on a four-wheel-drive eco-tour that will show you more of the unique natural environment of North Stradbroke Island. See echidnas, koalas, and kangaroos in their native habitat on one of the best weekend getaways from Brisbane for nature lovers.

Whale watching: North Stradbroke Island lies on a major migration route for whales, which makes it one of the best destinations in all of Australia for whale watching. Head out on a boat tour of the nutrient-rich waters around the island, and you're very likely to encounter some of the giants of the deep.

Scuba diving: The waters off Straddie offer exceptional visibility, especially in the summer. Dive below the ocean waves here to encounter incredible wildlife like leopard sharks and manta rays. There are dive schools here that can get you certified and teach you how to explore the ocean safely.

June to November is the whale migration season, so if you want to go whale watching on North Stradbroke Island, that's the time to do it. Alternatively, the always-good underwater visibility is even better in summer than at other than other times of the year, so if scuba diving is your thing, consider visiting between December and February.

Weekend trip from Brisbane to Moreton Island

Moreton Island

Another fantastic island to explore on weekend getaways from Brisbane, Moreton Island is a great place to view fascinating wildlife, see beautiful scenery, and enjoy everything that makes this part of Australia so special.

You can bring your car to Moreton Island, but there are no bridges, so you'll need to take a ferry. The ferry leaves from Brisbane Harbor and takes around 90 minutes to make the journey to Moreton Island. If you're not bringing a car, you can also take a water taxi or even a plane.

Feed wild dolphins: At the Tangalooma Island Resort , an ideal place for romantic getaways, you can meet friendly native dolphins and even feed them. A pod of dolphins visits the resort every day at sunset and will happily accept fish right from your hand.

Sand tobogganing: This huge sand island is a great place to participate in the fun sport of sand tobogganing. A highlight of weekend getaways from Brisbane, you can slide over the dunes on your toboggan and reach speeds in excess of 50 km an hour.

Summer is probably the best time to visit Moreton Island and enjoy all its outdoor activities, but there's really no bad time of year for a weekend getaway here.

Best weekend trips from Brisbane

With only three days or so to spend in Brisbane , you'll want to focus on the main attractions in the city. But if you have a little more time in this part of Australia, don't neglect some of the best weekend getaways from the city. Whether you want to soak up the vibrant atmosphere of the Gold Coast, go on romantic getaways to a National Park, or explore the pristine wildlife of Moreton Island, you'll find plenty to do in this part of Australia. 5 Great Day Trips From Brisbane Without A Car

Going on day trips in Australia can be a pain when you don't have a car. Here are some options and ways to do 5 great trips from Brisbane without one!

Sah Kilic

Australia is one of those places where if you want to get around anywhere, a car is seemingly a must. But growing up and living in Queensland for nearly all my life and not driving for most of it, there's quite a few day trips you can take from Brisbane, that you don't need a car for, and can easily get around using public transport and other methods.

Brisbane is perfectly situated between 2 cities that offer beaches, hikes and more. The best part is that they're reachable completely through public transport - Be sure to to get a Go Card from Translink for easy use of the public transport system. You can get a Go Card at any major station, Night Owl stores, or 7-Eleven's.

1 | A beach day/small hike on The Gold Coast (Burleigh Beach)

If you get on the Gold Coast Express train from any one of the major Brisbane stations (Central, Fortitude Valley, Roma Street) you'll be able to get off at Varsity Lakes station, where you'll catch the 765 Bus straight to Second Avenue, and for the whole day relax at Burleigh Beach. Full route here.

One way, this costs $13.80 AUD ($9.50 USD) and takes 1 hr 50 mins from Central to the beach. You can check out the journey planner here .

weekend train trips from brisbane

  • Go for a swim and sun bake
  • Have a picnic and watch the sunset on Burleigh Hill
  • Hike up Burleigh National Park for a nice view
  • Get some smoothies and delicious eats on James Street
  • Enjoy a cocktail on Burleigh Pavilion with views of Surfers Paradise

2 | Spend a day at one of the major theme parks

Dreamworld , Movie World , Wet n Wild or Sea World . They're all slightly different but equally fun, and you can get to all of them without a car. In true theme park fashion though, they are quite pricey - so not the most thrifty option. But if you're a theme park person, it could be for you.

  • Water slides
  • Dolphin Shows
  • Patting Sting Rays
  • Roller coasters

🎢 And a whole lot more!

Again you can take the Gold Coast line from any one of the major stations in Brisbane (Central, Fortitude Valley, Roma Street) and get off at Coomera Station this time. Take one of the TX Buses - for Dreamworld as an example, this would be TX7.

The whole journey one way would be 1 hr 7 mins and cost around $8.30 ($5.70 USD) . You can check the other theme park journey's here . Just type the station you're leaving from in Brisbane, and then type the theme park you want to go to.

3 | Spend a day on The Sunshine Coast at Noosa Heads Main Beach

This ones a tough one, it's doable via public transport but takes 3 h 11 mins and costs around $20.40 ($14 USD) one way. That's long and expensive, granted the pay-off is amazing calm beaches and a very relaxed vibe. So before getting into what you can do in Noosa, let's talk about other options for this day trip.

  • Car hire might not be an option for you (since you're reading this article) but if it is an option, you can find them from $12 - $25 Australian dollars a day ( can google it here ), and even if you spend some money on petrol too, that option's going to be way cheaper.
  • If you absolutely can't use a car, consider turning the day trip into a weekend trip and get some accommodation up there. There's some nice Airbnb listings to pick from, there's also some other cheap/free accommodation options here . And this way at least for this long journey, you'll maximize your time.

Now for things to do:

weekend train trips from brisbane

  • Watch the sunset on Noosa Main Beach .
  • Get a delicious burger at the Betty's Burgers , a burger chain that's almost gone all over Australia but started right here in Noosa!
  • Go do some light hiking at Noosa National Park .
  • While you're on that hike, try stopping by Boiling Pot Lookout and Dolphin Point Lookout , for some scenic views.
  • Try your hand at surfing at one of the many surf schools right on the beach.

4 | Explore scenic views and waterfalls at Springbrook National Park

This one's not a thrifty special because the only way to get to Springbrook National Park without a car is with a tour, and they can get pricey. Again the option to rent a car is there at $12 - $25 Australian dollars a day ( can google it here ).

Tour companies will take you on 4-12 hour trips from $85-$200 ($60-$140 USD) a person - indeed your money will fly away 💸. But there's quite positive responses from travelers who take these tours, so if nature is your thing, this could be a very good option for you.

weekend train trips from brisbane

These tours pick you up and drop you off from/to your hotel door and cover locations and activities like:

  • Purling Brook Falls
  • Rainbow Falls
  • Glow Worm Caves
  • Numinbah Valley
  • Wildlife exploration from Koala's to Wallabies
  • Canyon Lookout with some crazy views

So if you do hire a car, you should absolutely visit these locations as well.

5 | Explore towns, lakes, and beaches on North Stradbroke Island

Getting to the island is quite easy with public transport, take a train from Central, Fortitude Valley, or Roma Street, to Cleveland Station - this would be on the Shorncliffe Line . After you get to Cleveland Station get on the 258 Bus for Toondah Harbour where you'll get off. This takes 1 h 20 mins .

From the Harbour, you'll catch the ferry to Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island, the main town there. The ferry leaves every hour, takes 30 mins to get there and is operated by Flyer , not by Translink (the QLD public transport org) . Full Journey here with costs - Note that Stradbroke is better done over a weekend, but a day trips possible too.

So now we've arrived, what's there to do?

  • Without even leaving Dunwich there's beaches all along the coast of the small town, you can check these out first.
  • North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum is quite interesting if you're into the historical side.
  • Canoeing and Kayaking hire is available at a few spots on the island for a fantastic time.

Sea at Australia

If you're looking to extend your day trip for a weekend, this means you'll get to see some of the best spots.

  • Amity Point has beautiful scenic lookouts, camping, famous beaches and more. You'll see many people in their 4 Wheel Drives gunning it through the sand and fishing as well - about a 1 h 20 mins bus from Dunwich.
  • Point Lookout is also similar with great stretches of beach, hiking on the side of cliffs and more - about a 50 min bus from Dunwich.

I hope you've got some more ideas now for your trip to Brisbane! Renting a car definitely helps but sometimes we can't and even though some of these trips can be a bit of a drag with public transport, at least you know they're doable 😊

Is there anywhere we can get to by rail close enough for a weekend trip (leave Fri night or early Sat and back late Sun)? So far most places I've looked at on the QR website are too far away or the train only runs one of the weekend days.

We've seen a lot of beaches so seeing some of outback Australia would be fun if that exists in Queensland?

Any suggestions would be great!

' class=

As you say the trains don't run all that often on the longer routes - usually several times a week.

Also consider hinterland areas of the coast like the lamington plateau and national park.

If you havent been - day trips or overnights that are not the beach- montville and maleny, mt tamborine, mt glorious, mt cootha and the botanic gardens, glass house mts area.

Longer than a day- As georgia suggests - stanthorpe (girraween/bald rock) toowoomba, kingaroy.

Maybe take advantage of a cheap flight out to hamilton island or out west, these arent usually cheap though :( to longreach etc.

Before we get to the best things to do in Brisbane, here is a bit of a factsheet with some background on the city. Brisbane is the capital of Queensland, often referred to as the Sunshine State. It is also the 3rd biggest city in Australia, after Sydney and Melbourne.

The city sits along the Brisbane River which snakes through the city. It is a clean city with a lot of green spaces, cultural experiences, and most importantly a lot of places to just relax and have a BBQ. Brisbane is often overshadowed by the likes of Sydney or Melbourne, but with a perfect sub-tropical climate and a laid back welcoming atmosphere, Brisbane is a must visit on any trip to Australia.

Country: Australia

Languages Spoken: English

Currency: Australian Dollar $ AUD

Famous for: It’s good weather and sunshine

Visit if you like: relaxed places with a laid back vibe and plenty of sunshine

The amount of time you need for your Brisbane itinerary depends on what you want to see and do. We have come up with this 1 week Brisbane itinerary because we think that is the perfect amount of time to make the most out of your time in the city. It will also mean that you aren’t rushing around.

Keep in mind Brisbane is a big place as well and getting from one place to another is not as quick as you might think. On top of that Brisbane or ‘Brissie’ to the locals is the kind of place you want to take your time to explore.

That being said, you could probably see a lot of the main tourist sights in about 3 – 4 days so we have also included some ideas for the best road trips from Brisbane too in case you want to delve a little further into what Australia has to offer.

Before you plan your 1 week Brisbane itinerary you are probably wondering about budget. In terms of Australian cities and cost of living Brisbane is a lot cheaper than the likes of Melbourne and Sydney. That being said things in Australia can be expensive.

Obviously your costs will be dependant on what you want to do during your week in Brisbane, but keep in mind that things like petrol or even eating out in Brisbane can get expensive. A meal for 2 in a standard restaurant could set you back somewhere between $50 -$100. For a decent week where you eat out, visit tourists attractions and catch public transport you probably need a little over $2000 between two. Of course this can either go up or down depending on your spending habits.

If you are looking to rent a car (which we highly recommend you do) then this is going to be more expensive. Hotels can also be expensive especially if you are staying in the city centre, and prices average from around $220 per night for basic accommodation and get more expensive depending on your travel style.

Where to stay as part of your Brisbane itinerary

If you are in Brisbane and you want to be close to all the action, we would recommend staying somewhere central like the CBD or South Bank. If you are planning to rent a car do make sure your accommodation comes with parking.

Whilst the CBD and South Bank can be expensive, they are also incredibly central, with excellent public transport links. You will also find yourself smack bang in the middle of the excitement the city has to offer. Here are some hotel recommendations to consider as part of your Brisbane itinerary.

The W Brisbane is perfect if you are looking for a luxury break in Brisbane. This 5 star hotel, has a very modern and trendy interior, as well as a pool (because it does get hot in Brisbane). The location is excellent. It is technically in the CBD so you are close to the main shopping district, and bus station, but it is also just across from South Bank.

Prices start at around $200 per night (if you can find a good deal) so make sure you book early.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Another excellent choice for luxury accommodation is the Pullman Hotel in King George Square. It is centrally located, has an excellent pool, and a rooftop bar with some amazing city views.

Another favourite is the Emporium Hotel in South Bank . This is another 5 star hotel, located in the heart of South Bank. The location is great as it is near a ton of restaurants and bars. There is also a rooftop bar and pool, to really get you into the holiday mood.

It is pretty easy to get around during your 1 week in Brisbane with buses, trains, and ferries helping you commute through most parts of the city. We do recommend renting a car if you can. Most people in Australia have cars as it is such a large place and in Brisbane it really makes seeing the sights that much easier. Parking isn’t an issue in Brisbane as you will find public car parks in most areas of the city as well as at all major tourist attractions.

weekend train trips from brisbane

The bus, train, and ferry network are all linked, and you will need to purchase a ‘ Go Card ‘ to travel on them. You can go to any newsagent, to purchase the card and you can also add credit here as well. When you get on the bus, train, or ferry you just tap your card and you are off (don’t forget to tap off at the end).

Things to do in Brisbane

There are so many amazing things to do in Brisbane to suit everyone, these are some of our top picks when it comes to sights as part of your 1 week Brisbane itinerary.

Personally I don’t think you can spend 1 week in Brisbane without going to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Most tourists coming to Australia want to get up close and personal with some of the wildlife Australia is famous for. Enter Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary . It is a great place to go to see Koala’s up close munching on Eucalyptus leaves, or even better you can hand feed a Kangaroo.

The Kangaroos are kept in a really large enclosure so there is a lot of space for them to hop around, and they will eat right out of your hands.

weekend train trips from brisbane

It is definitely a very Australian experience and we highly recommend adding this to your Brisbane itinerary. At Lone Pine you can learn a lot about the unique Australian wildlife. You probably need about half a day to explore properly, particularly as there are a lot of wildlife presentations and activities you can participate in.

Because Brisbane is a river city we highly recommend taking advantage of this by doing a river cruise. You get to see some of the cities best sights, and you also have a guide that explains the history too. If you can we recommend the sunset cruise, which is one of the most beautiful times in the city.

Sydney of course has the Sydney Harbour whilst Brisbane has the Story Bridge. The bridge is an iconic structure in the city, and a great way to get a bird’s eye view of the Brisbane River and the skyscrapers is to do the Story Bridge Climb .

This is not for the faint hearted, but if you are brave enough it truly is a memorable experience. You can book different packages such as evening or day climbs and they start at around $119 for the express climb and go up depending on the experience you want. The climb itself isn’t too strenuous and you are taken up with a professional guide.

You also get some awesome photos to remember the experience or in my case proof you actually did it!

weekend train trips from brisbane

Another must to add to your Brisbane itinerary is South Bank. Located on the banks of the Brisbane River you will find the South Bank Parklands. Sprawled out over 17 hectares of prime riverside land this inner city oasis is perfect for exploring, swimming, and eating. You can have a BBQ or dine at one of the many restaurants in the area. There is also a public swimming facility which resembles a beach with the stunning CBD as a backdrop.

weekend train trips from brisbane

It is such an amazing contrast between the CBD on one side of the river and the very chilled South Bank Parklands on the other. There are a lot of really nice walks around the area and it is best enjoyed at a slow pace.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Make sure you take the time to find the Brisbane sign for that all important selfie. It’s located close to the bus way, and has the beautiful city as a backdrop.

weekend train trips from brisbane

You can also go on the Wheel of Brisbane to get some great views of the city. The cool thing about this is you can sip wine as you learn all about the city.

weekend train trips from brisbane

If you are feeling a little bit more cultural, also located in South Bank is Brisbane’s cultural precinct. Here you can visit the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), The Queensland Museum and Science Centre, The State Library and the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA).

The Queensland Art Gallery is certainly worth a visit especially as a lot of the art work has a focus on Australia, Asia, and the Pacific. It is also a great place to see some Indigenous Art which is an important part of Australian history.

Growing up in Brisbane, the Queen Street Mall has always been the meeting place for friends and family in the heart of Brisbane. The Mall is an outdoor strip with several shops and restaurants vying for your attention. It feels like the life and soul of the city, so is definitely worth a visit at least once.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Brisbane’s CBD is fortunate enough to have a lot of green spaces nearby. The Roma Street Parklands boasts a full 16 hectares of green space. It’s great for picnics, or just unwinding after a busy day exploring the city.

Located in King George Square, Brisbane’s City Hall has always been synonymous with the people of the city. It has long been the backdrop to a number of cultural events in the city and in 2013 after a period of restoration, it was reopened and dedicated to the people of Queensland.

These days you can do free guided tours and visit the Museum of Brisbane located on the 3rd floor. You can also visit the clock tower as part of your guided tour and ride up in a restored historic lift.

weekend train trips from brisbane

If you are based in the city centre, then we recommend adding the City Botanical Gardens to your 1 week Brisbane itinerary. The gardens are heritage listed, and were originally planted by convicts in 1825 as a source of food to feed the prison colony. Not long after it became a public garden, with several rare botanic species located here. It’s a great place to go for a bit of quiet reflection, in an otherwise busy city.

weekend train trips from brisbane

If you are trying to fill your 1 week Brisbane itinerary then the Botanical Gardens are a must. This is also where your car comes in handy as the Mount Coot-tha Botanical Gardens are located just outside the city centre. The gardens showcase a range of diverse themes, from the serene Japanese Garden to the Australian scrubland ready to explore. The gardens are a great place to sit and relax so bring a picnic rug if you can.

weekend train trips from brisbane

They also provide ample opportunity to come into contact with some of the Australian wildlife. In fact Dave was absolutely perplexed looking at the Ibis. A black and white bird with a really long twig like beak. And don’t even get me started on the water dragons!

weekend train trips from brisbane

Another must on your 1 week Brisbane itinerary has to be the Mount Coot-tha Lookout. Unlike the Story Bridge climb, you don’t have to be a thrill seeker to enjoy some spectacular views of Brisbane. We loved visiting at night because you get to see the city all lit up, but visiting in the day is amazing too.

weekend train trips from brisbane

There is a cafe near the lookout serving everything from ice-cream to warm drinks so no matter what time of year you visit you will find a treat to accompany the view. Mount Coot-tha itself is a national park and there are a ton of walking trails and BBQ spots along the way. The good thing is that when having a BBQ in Australia, parks already have BBQ’s so you just have to bring your meat and cook (and don’t forget to give the BBQ a good clean before and after!).

weekend train trips from brisbane

As mentioned above Brisbane is a river city, so it would be only right to schedule a trip on the CityCat. You can glide down the Brisbane River with the wind in your hair and the sun on your face whilst standing at the front of a blue and yellow painted catamaran as part of the Brisbane ferry network.

weekend train trips from brisbane

You get some incredible views of the city and it even takes you to one of the prettiest parks in Brisbane which is also our next point. To plan your City Cat journey, visit the Translink website .

New Farm Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Brisbane. At least in our opinion anyway. It is a heritage listed public park and is also one of the grandest and oldest parks in the city. The park covers 15 hectares and sits just along the Brisbane River. We recommend taking the Ferry from South Bank to New Farm Park particularly as it is a beautiful trip that takes you right under the Story Bridge.

The park is perfect for exploring. You have a scented rose garden, a bandstand and so many picnic or BBQ spots. And the best thing is if you manage to visit in October you will be greeted by a carpet of blue as the Jacaranda trees are in full bloom and the flowers start to fall. It really is a beautiful sight. Just note though if you are having a picnic check for ant nests as we managed to sit right on top of one and I was bitten several times.

weekend train trips from brisbane

One of the cool new activities on offer in Brisbane is renting a Go Boat. Boats usually go from Breakfast Creek, and you can rent by the hour or for the day. You can have a picnic on the boat and explore the Brisbane River at your own pace.

Another exquisite BBQ spot has to be the Kangaroo Point cliffs. You get a wonderful view of the city and it is especially charming at sunset. We visited in the evening and even then it was beautiful looking at all the skyscrapers lit up.

weekend train trips from brisbane

If you are a little more adventurous you can abseil down the 20 metre high cliffs. You need to book in advance  but no experience is necessary. A professional guide will help you make your way safely down the cliffside. The cliffs make a gorgeous location to do this as you can take your time and observe the many boats as they float on by on the Brisbane River.

Once you pass through the traditional Chinese gates you will be met with an abundance of Chinese grocers, and asian cuisine. Located in Fortitude Valley it is a great place to eat. Our absolute top pick is to go to a Yum Cha restaurant. You get to sip tea and pick your food from a trolley pushed around the dining floor by staff. Make sure you save room for the mango pancakes!

Fortitude Valley or “The Valley” as the locals call is is certainly full of contrasts. Chinatown is located in this area but beyond that you will find a mix of elegance, grunge, and the contemporary. Some parts you might look at and wonder where you are, and other streets have trendy boutique clothes and coffee shops.

The Valley is Brisbane’s main entertainment district so if you are looking for a fun night out, from sipping cocktails, to dancing all night long this is the place to come. Also if you are a music lover like us this is a good place to see some obscure bands from around the world.

The valley has a very interesting and often shady history, and if this is something you are interested in learning more about we recommend adding a historical crime walking tour to your Brisbane itinerary.

Eagle street is another riverside area in Brisbane perfect for exploring on foot. It is located in the heart of the CBD but is also known for its upper class dining and drinking. It is the perfect place to go to sip drinks by the river as well as enjoying a more expensive meal.

weekend train trips from brisbane

I am probably biased but Brisbane really knows how to put on a good market. From your farmer’s markets to your more eclectic craft stalls you will be able to find a market to suit your needs. For a full list, checkout the Visit Brisbane website. This is another one that requires a car as some of the best markets are located outside of the city centre.

One of our absolute favourite places to shop in Brisbane has to be in the suburb of Paddington. There are a ton of vintage stores you can checkout covering all different price ranges. West End is also a great place to go for vintage and retro shopping. If you are more into boutique stores and one of a kind clothing pieces, then Fortitude Valley is your best bet. Those with more mainstream tastes can head to the Queen Street Mall for all the best high street stores.

Right, so beer in Australia is a pretty big deal. And each state is quite competitive in producing their own local beer. Queensland’s contribution is XXXX (said 4 X). The tour is a great way to get to grips with how it is made, as well as how to pour a perfect beer. On top of that you do get to do some tasting which is always a bonus.

Boggo Road Gaol was one of the most notorious prisons in Australia. It is also said to be haunted. Executions took place here until 1913. What made it so notorious though was the fact that the conditions the prisoners lived in were quite harsh. Some parts of the prison had no electricity and as you can see with the picture below of my Dad exploring a gaol cell, your only light is via a torch.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Cells also did not have any forms of sanitation and prisoners had to use buckets. If you get the opportunity to do a ghost tour we highly recommend it, as it provides a fascinating insight into life in the prison.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Brisbane is starting to make a name for itself as a foodie favourite. And where to go all depends on the kind of evening you are after. South Bank is perfect for a more casual al fresco dining experience. There are a lot of specialty restaurants and it is a great place to sit outside whilst sipping wine and watching the world go by.

If you are after something a little more up market head over the Eagle Street Pier. A lot of places here have spectacular views of the story bridge and a really elegant atmosphere. From seafood restaurants to fine dining, if you are after something a little bit more special, this is the place to come.

One of our favourite areas though has to be West End. Located just on the outskirts of the city centre, here you will find some truly culturally diverse food from Vietnamese Bakeries to contemporary cuisine. It can feel a little rough around the edges but this just adds to the charm, and the food here is quite affordable.

You also have Eat Street Northshore , which is a kind of night market located on a disused wharf along the Brisbane River. There are a number of different street food style vendors, and this a great place to go if you are after a casual dinner.

Or you can book onto one of the culinary experiences available in the city.

Drinking as part of your 1 week Brisbane itinerary

Of all the things to do in Brisbane, sipping cocktails or beers in the sunshine has to be one of our favourites. There are so many great places to do this in Brisbane, but here is a small collection of our favourites.

My absolute favourite cocktail bar in Brisbane has to be Death and Taxes. It is tucked away down a back laneway, but once you find it, it is so worth it. The bar is speakeasy style with several inventive cocktails on the list.

weekend train trips from brisbane

One of the best things to do in Brisbane has to be finding yourself a spot on a rooftop bar and admiring the views. Sixteen Antlers which is located on top of the Pullman/Mercure Hotel near King George Square is a great place to do this. The vibe is pretty chilled so it is perfect for those warm Brisbane days and nights.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Another fantastic rooftop bar in Brisbane is the Terrace which is part of the Emporium Hotel. This one is located in South Bank, and is a little more upmarket than some of the other bars we have mentioned. There is a strict dress code after dark, and the drinks are a little more expensive. That being said it is still a great bar and the views are incredible.

weekend train trips from brisbane

For something a little more low key in South Bank head to the South Bank Beer Garden. It is right next to the beach area which gives it that awesome holiday feel. Drinks are reasonably priced here too.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Another CBD bar that we recommend as part of your Brisbane itinerary is Miss Demeanour. It’s an underground cocktail/burger bar which is part dive par, part speakeasy. It attracts a younger crowd, and the food is actually quite good so if you want a good drink and some decent food this is the place for you.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Wet Deck is a hidden gem in the city centre. It’s part of the W Hotel and the bar itself is located next to the hotel pool, and has some incredible views of South Bank. You walk in and you are transported to an oasis in the middle of the city.

They do some really cool and refreshing cocktails, as well as beers and wine. And they have some light bites you can enjoy as well. In terms of things to do in Brisbane, chilling out with a nice drink in the sunshine should be high on your list, and Wet Deck is a great place to give it a go.

weekend train trips from brisbane

So you might be wondering what to pack for a holiday in Brisbane? Well the climate is certainly on the warmer side. Temperatures average to about 30 degrees Celsius in the day in the summer, although sometimes it can get hotter. Summers in Brisbane are very humid so t-shirts and shorts are very much a staple. Also make sure you pack plenty of sunscreen and a good hat to avoid being sunburnt.

Winter is a lot milder though and temperatures during the day average to about 20 degrees Celsius, although in the evenings it can get a lot colder. If you are visiting in the winter (June, July, August) do pack a jumper and it might even be worth bringing a light coat for those winter nights.

The good news is that Brisbane gets on average, around 300 days of sunshine each year. In the summer the humidity can cause some pretty intense thunderstorms, but there are also a lot of warm sunny days. Which is perfect for some al fresco dining or picnics.

If you are wondering when the best time of year to plan your Brisbane itinerary is, we honestly think Brisbane is one of those places you can visit year round.

The summer months are the busiest, particularly as this coincides with the school holidays. You do get some really hot days, but this gives you a real taste of the outdoor lifestyle Brisbane has to offer.

Winters in Brisbane are mild (compared to Europe anyway), and the weather is still pleasant with not much rain. Just pack a light jacket particularly for the evenings and you should be fine.

If you are visiting Brisbane with your significant other than you might be looking for romantic things to do in Brisbane. Here are some of the most romantic things to add to your 1 week Brisbane itinerary.

  • Watch the sunset at Mount Cootha
  • Have a picnic at Kangaroo Point
  • Do the Story Bridge climb
  • Have some drinks around Eagle Street

Things to do in Brisbane and beyond – the best day trips

Here are some of the best road trips from Brisbane as well as some general day trip ideas.

One of the best weekend trips from Brisbane has to be the Gold Coast . The drive takes about an hour or a bit longer depending on traffic and which part of the Gold Coast you want to visit. The Gold Coast is famous for its sandy Golden Beaches, laid back lifestyle, and sparkling ocean water. Popular with locals and tourists alike, this really is a must see destination. If you are short on time it really is one of the best day trips from Brisbane .

weekend train trips from brisbane

Getting there

If you have a car then it is a pretty smooth drive from Brisbane to the Gold Coast. The multi lane highways will get you there in no time. You can also hop on the train either directly from the Airport or from the city centre. Keep in mind though that depending on which part of the Gold Coast you intend to visit you will probably need to get a bus from the train station to your destination.

Where to stay

The Gold Coast has so many incredible places you can stay. You can either book your standard hotel room, or rent out a holiday apartment. We recommend going the apartment route because it means you can make your own food, and you get so much more space. It is also so much more relaxing and you don’t feel guilty for lounging around. When booking your accommodation you want to get as close to the beach as possible. Ideally you also want a sea view. Most apartments have balconies where you sit and listen to the sound of the ocean. Another bit of advice is to try and get a higher floor because the views are way better.

weekend train trips from brisbane

We stayed at the ultra modern Q1. It is the 7th tallest residential building in the world, and boasts some pretty epic views. There are two outdoor pools, and one indoor pool. The indoor pool is perfect especially in the winter months. As well as this there are BBQ facilities, and a sauna. If you do get the chance, stay overnight at the Gold Coast as it does make for one of the best weekend trips from Brisbane.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Surfers Paradise is where most of the action is so it does make for a great place to stay. The nightlife is lively and there is a lot to see and do. If you are looking for something a little more relaxing and family orientated though head to Broadbeach which is only a short distance away.

Things to do

Visit the Q1 observation tower –  At 230 meters in height, Q1 is certainly the best place to get some 360 degree views of the Gold Coast. If you are brave enough you can also do the outdoor climb which looks amazing and terrifying at the same time.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Feed the Lorikeets at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary – Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary provides you with ample opportunity to get up close and personal with the Australian Wildlife. Like Lone Pine you get the opportunity to feed Kangaroos and learn all about other Aussie wildlife.

The main attraction for us though has to be the lorikeet feeding. Like clockwork, the birds turn up towards the end of the day and you can pay a small fee for a plate of specially mixed food. You hold the plate out and wait for the birds to come swarming over to feed. It is a really special experience and what makes it even better is that the birds are wild and they come to you by choice as opposed to being caged.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Visit one of the theme parks the Gold Coast is famous for – The Gold Coast is famous for being the home to some of Australia’s best theme parks. You have Dreamworld , which is a theme park designed for thrill seekers who love rides. Movie World , which is a Warner Bros themed park with a mix of rides and film studios. And you also have Wet n Wild , a theme park totally dedicated to water slides.

Enjoy the beach – Obviously a must when visiting the Gold Coast is to make time to enjoy the beach. The sand is white and the water is so inviting especially on those hot days. When you do go, make sure you always swim between the flags.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Enjoy a rainforest retreat – Located in the Gold Coast hinterland you will find O’Reilly’s. It is a great place to escape to nature. You can do guided bird walks or the famous treetop walk. It really does make for a beautiful day and the scenery is just incredible.

Another place to add to your weekend trips from Brisbane folder has to be the Sunshine Coast . It is about an hour and a half to two hour drive to get here, again times vary depending on traffic and which part of the Sunshine Coast you want to visit. The Sunshine Coast is located North of Brisbane and this is the complete opposite direction from the Gold Coast. While it is a popular tourist destination you don’t get as many tourists as the Gold Coast.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Driving really is your best bet for the Sunshine Coast as this gives you the opportunity to see all the sights. You can get the train but again you will need to get more public transport to get to your final destination.

Similarly to the Gold Coast, you will find a lot of accommodation options from hotels to holiday apartment rentals. Two of the more popular areas have to be Noosa and Caloundra.

Enjoy the beaches – The number one thing to do on any trip to the Sunshine Coast is to enjoy the beach. There are so many different spots and the beaches here are far more picturesque than those on the Gold Coast. At least in our opinion anyway.

weekend train trips from brisbane

Australia Zoo – Steve Irwin certainly did a lot for wildlife conservation in Australia and you can visit the zoo he created. It is a great chance to get up close and personal with some slimey, scaley and even furry natives Australia is famed for. The Zoo does put a lot of time and money back into conservation projects around the world, which is good to know especially because we have very mixed feelings about the purpose of zoos. You can purchase tickets online in advance or as part of a day trip from Brisbane .

Glasshouse Mountains – You will see the Glasshouse Mountains on your drive up from Brisbane, and you can even drive through parts of the National Park. There are a ton of hikes you can do here with accredited companies, and it is a great opportunity to enjoy the natural Australian landscape.

Visit one of the National Parks – The Sunshine Coast has a lot of incredible scenery that can be explored in one of its many National Parks. The Sunshine Coast actually has more National Parks than any other place in Queensland. Apart from the Glasshouse Mountains National Park, the Noosa National Park and the Fraser Island Great Sandy National Park are must sees.

You can book day trips from Brisbane if you don’t have your own car, and it is definitely worth it if you have the time.

If you are tossing up between visiting the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast here is a handy guide.

If you are planning longer in Australia then there really is so much more to explore, like Sydney , (or you can read our article on Sydney in 3 days ), Melbourne , Tasmania and Adelaide. Here is a really handy article that will help you plan a 2 week Australia itinerary .

Here are some of our top tips for planning your own Brisbane itinerary.

  • Make sure that you are protected from the sun – have sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses
  • Carry water with you as it does get warm in Brisbane
  • Hire a car if you can as this will allow you to get around much easier, especially if you want to venture out of the city centre
  • Have some cash with you, Brisbane is moving towards a cashless society, but some places still require cash payments
  • Tipping in Brisbane or Australia for that matter is not mandatory (but as a former waitress it is nice!)
  • If you are getting on public transport purchase your ‘Go Card’ at a newsagent beforehand. You cannot pay with cash or credit card on public transport (yet).

1 week in Brisbane – a sample Brisbane itinerary

Here is a sample 1 week Brisbane itinerary to help you plan your own trip to this magnificent city.

On Day 1 of your 1 week in Brisbane we recommend starting your trip by exploring the CBD. You can shop at the Queen Street Mall , or explore City Hall .

We also recommend visiting the City Botanical Gardens and the Roma Street Parklands whilst you are in the centre.

In the evening enjoy some of the al fresco dining spots , and experience some of the city nightlife .

On Day 2 we recommend setting this aside to explore South Bank . From the Cultural Precinct , to the beautiful parkland walks you can go on, there is something for everyone. Make sure you bring your swimmers!

In the evening you can check out the many restaurants and bars in the area.

If you have access to a car, then this is the perfect time to venture out of the city centre. Our recommendation is to visit the Mount Cootha Botanical Gardens , as well as visiting the City lookout .

There are a number of hiking trails around here, and one of our favourites is at the nearby Slaughter Falls . Why not grab some sausages and bread and have a BBQ Australia style.

Today we recommend either driving, or getting the City Cat to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary . Here you can hold a Koala, hand feed Kangaroos, and get up close and personal with some Rainbow Lorikeets.

If you are driving you can also explore some of the Brisbane suburbs like Paddington and West End .

We recommend spending the day exploring on the City Cat . Make sure you get off at New Farm Park , and explore not only the park but the beautiful area itself. There are a number of quirky bars and restaurants here, making it the perfect place to get lost in.

Eagle Street is another great place to stop when you are on the City Cat. It especially comes alive in the evenings, so a great place for dinner and drinks.

Here we recommend you explore more of the city, and do a XXXX Brewery tour , or even visit a local Brewery like Felons nestled under the Story Bridge .

This is also a good time to do the Story Bridge Climb (but be warned you will be breathalysed before you do it so maybe save the brewery tours for after the climb).

If heights aren’t your thing just head to the Kangaroo Point Cliffs for some spectacular views of the Story Bridge and city centre .
