Along the way, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman , Take Good Care of My Baby , You’ve Got a Friend , So Far Away , It Might as Well Rain Until September , Up on the Roof , and The Loco-motion .

& juliet.

One of the newer entries to the jukebox musical list is & Juliet , which imagines what would have happened if Shakespeare's famous character hadn't died at the end of his play and what would come next. The show is packed with the music of producer and songwriter Max Martin who's behind the hits of some of the biggest pop artists including Britney Spears, Bon Jovi, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande and the Backstreet Boys. The musical includes songs such as 'Baby One More Time', 'It's My Life' 'Everybody (Backstreet's Back)' and a brilliant mash up of 'Teenage Dream' and 'Break Free'.

Bat Out of Hell: The Musical

Based on Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell album trilogy, Bat Out of Hell: The Musical is not a spectacle to be missed! The story is loosely based on the story of Peter Pan but set in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan which is now ruled by tyrannical ruler called Obsidian. Some of the songs included are 'Take Good Care of My Baby', 'Will You Love Me Tomorrow', '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman', and 'I Feel the Earth Move'.

Jersey Boys

When you think about jukebox musicals there's no doubt that Jersey Boys would come to mind! Since it opened on Broadway back in 2005 Jersey Boys has become a global sensation! The musical stays close to its source material as the plot revolves around the history of The Four Seasons (AKA Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons). Using the seasons as a story telling device the musical gives each band member their chance to narrate the story. The musical includes some of The Four Seasons' most famous songs including 'Sherry', 'Big Girls Don't Cry', 'December 1963 (Oh What a Night)', and 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You'.

It's fair to argue that Mamma Mia is probably one of if not the most successful jukebox musicals of all time. Featuring the music of the Eurovision-winning band ABBA, Mamma Mia takes us to a Greek Island where 20-year-old Sophie is set to marry her fiancée. Sophie wants to invite her father to the wedding however she doesn't know who he could be. After finding her mother's diary she finds out there are three possible contenders and decides to invite them all to the wedding! The West End production opened back in 1999 and includes so many of ABBA's greatest hits including 'Take a Chance on Me', 'Dancing Queen', and 'Voulez-Vous' to name a few. A film adaptation was released in 2008 with an A-list cast including Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Julie Walters. The film was a huge success and got its own sequel – Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again 10 years later which starred Cher !

Moulin Rouge!

Originally made as a musical film , Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge! has been adapted as a stage show with new additions to its phenomenal score. Set in Paris' iconic venue Moulin Rouge is a story of love set in a surreal world with high camp mash ups! After success on Broadway the show has now entertaining UK audiences in London's West End!

Priscilla Queen of the Desert

This musical has become a classic musical beloved by the LGBT+ community , based on the 1994 film of the same name, Priscilla Queen of the Desert takes us on a road trip across Australia as three drag queens travel to a perform in a show. Despite being a fun and whacky adventure with some queer anthems such as 'Don't Leave Me This Way' , 'Go West' and 'MacArthur Park', Priscilla is unafraid to take on the tough realities of the homophobia and transphobia still suffered by the LGBT+ community.

Return to the Forbidden Planet

Probably one of the lesser-known musicals on this list, Return to the Forbidden Planet is a gem of a silly-but-fun musical. With a plot based on Shakespeare's The Tempest and the 1956 sci-fi film Forbidden Planet this musical plays wonderful homage to classic science fiction. The musical is packed with the rock 'n' roll hits of the 1950s and 60s such as 'Great Balls of Fire', 'Good Vibrations', 'Teenager in Love', and 'Shake, Rattle and Roll'.

Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages takes us back to 1987 where the Bourbon Room, a Hollywood bar is under threat by developers who want to clean up the Sunset Strip's reputation for 'sex, drugs and rock-n-roll'! The show is filled with classic rock anthems such as 'Don't Stop Believin', 'We Built This City', and 'Here I Go Again'. The musical was adapted into a film in 2012 which included a star-studded cast including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Mary J. Blige!

TINA: The Tina Turner Musical

Based on the life of the legendary singer, TINA: The Tina Turner musical explores her humble beginnings in town in Tennessee to growing into a global superstar. The show is packed with some iconic hits such as 'River Deep Mountain High' and 'Proud Mary'.

We Will Rock You

Does anyone else miss the statue of Freddie Mercury that used to stand at the front of the Dominion Theatre? The statue was a prominent fixture of the theatre throughout We Will Rock You's 12-year West End run. With the incredible music of Queen, We Will Rock You took us to a dystopian future where all non-computer generated music is banned and all instruments have been locked away! The show is jam packed with brilliant characters and amazing Queen songs including 'Radio Gaga' (with some updated lyrics), 'Somebody to Love', 'Killer Queen' 'Under Pressure', and 'Seven Seas of Rye'.

Directed by Curve’s Artistic Director Nikolai Foster (Sunset Boulevard, West Side Story), Beautiful will open at Curve on Monday 28th February until Saturday 12th March before moving to Theatre Royal Bath from 17th – 26th March 2022 and Mayflower Theatre Southampton from 12th – 16th April 2022, with additional tour dates and casting to be announced soon.

The hit show, which ran in the West End for two and a half years before two successful UK tours, will feature a talented cast of actor-musicians performing countless classics including You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman, Take Good Care of my Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, Up on the Roof, Locomotion, You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling and exploring the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom.

Carole King’s remarkable music will be brought to life by Grammy Award-winning Orchestrator Steve Sidwell and adapted by Tony Award-winning Curve Associate and Musical Supervisor Sarah Travis. Choreography is by rising star choreographer Leah Hill. The creative team is completed by Set Designer Frankie Bradshaw, Costume Designer Edd Lindley, Lighting Designer and Curve Associate Ben Cracknell, Sound Designer Tom Marshall and Casting Director and Curve Associate Kay Magson CDG.

Written by Douglas McGrath, with songs by Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Beautiful – The Carole King Musical tells the story of the singer/songwriter before she became a chart-topping music legend.

Speaking about this new Made at Curve production, Curve’s Chief Executive Chris Stafford and Artistic Director Nikolai Foster said:

“Carole King’s body of work represents some of the greatest pop songs ever written. We are thrilled to be working on this new production of Beautiful, bringing this remarkable story and music to life with the finest actor – musicians working in the UK today. We are honoured to be collaborating with orchestrators, Grammy Award-winner Steve Sidwell and Tony Award-winner Sarah Travis, to bring King’s incredible tapestry of songs to life. We are also proud to be working alongside our partners at Theatre Royal Bath and Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre.”

WHAT IS BEAUTIFUL THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL ABOUT?

HER NAME IS CAROLE KING. HER STORY IS BEAUTIFUL.

BEAUTIFUL is the untold story of Carole King’s journey from schoolgirl to superstar; from her relationship with husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin, their close friendship and playful rivalry with fellow song-writing duo Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, to her remarkable rise to stardom becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history.

Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent.

She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and sold her first hit, Will You Love Me Tomorrow , when she was just seventeen.

By the time she reached her twenties she had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll from Aretha Franklin to The Monkees , The Drifters , to The Shirelles .

She wrote the soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics such as You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman , Take Good Care of my Baby , You’ve Got a Friend , So Far Away , It Might As Well Rain Until September , Up on the Roof , and Locomotion .

But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice.

Quirky and compassionate … Molly-Grace Cutler in Beautiful.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical review – hits, heartache and rollerskates

Curve, Leicester Molly-Grace Cutler is in fine voice in this jukebox musical but the story shortchanges the singer-songwriter’s achievements

L ike her 2012 memoir, A Natural Woman, this jukebox musical is bookended by Carole King putting on a concert. The show opens and closes at New York’s Carnegie Hall in the wake of her phenomenally successful 1971 album Tapestry and traces King’s journey into the spotlight as a solo artist, focusing on her songwriting partnership with her first husband, Gerry Goffin.

Nikolai Foster’s touring production is staged with his customary elan and finds Molly-Grace Cutler in fine voice as a quirky and compassionate King. But the musical – which won Tony awards in New York in 2014 and Olivier awards in London the following year – shortchanges the singer-songwriter both in her personal and professional lives, never fully capturing her character or how she blazed a trail, on her own terms, through the industry.

Douglas McGrath’s book begins by minimising King’s childhood – her younger brother, who was moved into a residence for disabled people, goes unmentioned while her father, a firefighter, is defined primarily as an adulterer. The story hurtles into her meeting with mogul Don Kirshner (portrayed as a jovial uncle by Garry Robson) and her teenage achievements seem breezy as she crafts pop songs at a time when, one medley reminds us, the charts were full of yakety-yak, stupid cupids and splish-splashing on a Saturday night.

Breezing through the hits … Beautiful.

On the other side of Goffin and King’s cubicle in Kirshner’s hit factory is another songwriting couple, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, and the show captures their friendly rivalry as both duos pull an all-nighter to write a new song for Kirshner’s approval.

Several songs are smartly used to reflect King’s changing circumstances: Some Kind of Wonderful marks the discovery that she’s pregnant and Up on the Roof alludes to Goffin’s turbulent childhood, though it could equally have mirrored King’s career-long search for private space in a noisy industry. Will You Love Me Tomorrow? comments not on the pair’s first night together but King’s fears of her husband’s infidelity; One Fine Day presents his eventual affair from both women’s perspective.

Foster’s production, which cuts the original’s overture, has an attractively loose feel. Songs are often first heard in embryo form, followed by polished performances from the groups who recorded them. Within a giant mosaic frame, Frankie Bradshaw’s set features studios and writing booths but these busy anonymous settings also accentuate the lack of quiet intimacy in the script. In her song Goodbye Don’t Mean I’m Gone, King wrote of holding a baby in one hand and a pen in the other; her family life is never as convincingly evoked here as her job. Too often the script favours a quick gag over emotional depth. Tom Milner captures Goffin’s unpredictability but the book glosses over the severity of his mental illness, which resulted in electroshock therapy.

Captures Goffin’s unpredictability … Tom Milner in Beautiful.

Seren Sandham-Davies is a brassy Cynthia, even before picking up her trumpet, and Jos Slovick’s hypochondriacal Barry is humorous. Concentrating on their relationship means we hear Weil-Mann classics like You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ (played here for laughs) but at the expense of developing King’s characterisation and her long career beyond the release of Tapestry. It is a stark contrast to Katori Hall’s masterfully lean chronology in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical .

But Edd Lindley’s costumes are a delight (cloudy suits and eye-popping glitter jackets for the Drifters, fur-trimmed gowns for the Shirelles) and the multi-rolling support are strong. Give it up for Amena El-Kindy who, as King’s former babysitter Little Eva, performs The Loco-Motion on rollerskates and does it with ease.

At Curve, Leicester , until 12 March. Then touring .
