Holiday Travel Nightmare: Expert Advice as Airlines Offer Flight Waivers
In the boston area, the storm impacts get rolling thursday evening, with rain getting more intense by friday morning, published december 20, 2022 • updated on december 20, 2022 at 5:15 pm, what to know.
- A major storm moving across the country will affect travelers from coast to coast
- In Massachusetts, any travel on Friday will be difficult, but flights will be most impacted: delayed or canceled from the high winds and driving rain.
- Many airlines are already offering travel waivers for people who need to switch their flights to avoid heavy weather
A major winter storm is already causing problems out west, forcing people headed that way to change their plans.
Aga Ilwicka changed hers.
“I’m traveling from Boston to Chicago and then from Chicago to San Francisco and we had to change our plane in Chicago because there is a huge snow storm coming in on Thursday,” she said.

As we approach one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, Mother Nature is playing Grinch. That major storm moving across the country will affect travelers from coast to coast.
Tracking Friday's storm in Mass.
In the Boston area, the storm impacts get rolling Thursday evening, with rain getting more intense by Friday morning. Any travel on Friday will be difficult, but flights will be most impacted: delayed or canceled from the high winds and driving rain.
The strongest winds seem to come between 3 and 8 p.m. on Friday. In that time, the gusts could be as high as 60 mph, enough for some power outages and wind damage. Afterward, cold air will rush in and temperatures will crash to the upper 20s in hours, which could cause roads to freeze over.
Flight cancellations
Already in the Pacific Northwest, some flights into Seattle have been canceled.
“I had customers out on the West Coast that were coming back east coast via Seattle so yesterday I re-routed them via Phoenix,” said Suzanne Bowering, with Holiday Travel.
Airlines have become much better at getting ahead of the storm, she said: “They used to wait until the last minute and then put up travel advisories and by then it was too late.”

Most of the airlines, including United, American, Southwest, JetBlue, Delta, Alaska and Spirit, are already offering travel waivers for people who need to switch their flights to avoid heavy weather.
“They don’t want you at the counter yelling at their employees any more than you want to be there,” Bowering noted.
Travelers have to check with their individual airline, because waiver policies differ depending on when the ticket was bought and where the plane is taking off and landing.
“So like, the Midwest, they’ve already started their policy. They started it for traveling today and it goes through Friday. Some of the other ones, they start it tomorrow,” Bowering said.
If you're thinking about changing your flight, think fast. Ilwicka said United made the process easy, but there are limited flights and lots of passengers, so you could be shut out if you wait too long.

Looking for sunny skies? Look elsewhere.
DREARY OPEN TO THE WEEK
We begin the new week with an overcast sky and temperatures in the low 40s. Over the course of Monday, there may be a few sprinkles, but it will generally remain an gray and dry day. Temperatures may climb 5-7 degrees, but no more than that. Rain showers will arrive by Tuesday morning with temperatures in the low 40s. Showers will be off and on into the evening with a period of steady rain during the afternoon. Highs will remain in the mid 40s once again.
As we step into the midweek, expect temperatures to fluctuate a little bit. While Wednesday will similarly remain overcast, it’ll become a mild one with temperatures climbing to around 60 degrees. A few showers will enter the area as we approach the mid to late afternoon, but steady rain is not expected. Don’t get too comfortable with the warmth as we head into Thursday though.
DAMP AND COOL END TO THE WEEK
Thursday brings another round of wet weather, with showers persisting throughout the entire day. Anticipate periods of steady rain at times, keeping temperatures locked in the low to mid 40s. This may be a good soaker for some areas too. As temperatures fall into Friday morning, there is a chance that precip transitions to snow in the Worcester hills and southern New Hampshire. After a week of gray skies, we are likely to see the sun make a return by at least the second half of Friday. This comes ahead of our next chance for rain as soon as Saturday evening.

Ma thanksgiving 2022 travel forecast: best, worst times to drive, this could be the busiest thanksgiving since before the pandemic. massdot is out with a pre-holiday traffic forecast..
Neal McNamara , Patch Staff
BOSTON, MA — Like slightly dry turkey and heated political conversations, traffic is an expected Thanksgiving tradition.
In 2022, MassDOT and other travel agencies are predicting a particularly heavy travel week between Monday and turkey day, especially along arteries like the Mass Pike and I-93.
In an annual Thanksgiving travel forecast released Tuesday, AAA predicted that about 54.6 million people will travel 50 miles or more over the holiday, up about 1-1/2 percent compared to 2021. AAA is also predicting that 2022 will be the third-busiest Thanksgiving for travel over the past 22 years, trailing only 2005 and 2019.
Find out what's happening in Boston with free, real-time updates from Patch.
About 49 million of those travelers will be going by car, according to AAA. On Wednesday, MassDOT released its own travel forecast for various highways all Thanksgiving week between Monday and Black Friday.
I-93, Braintree to Boston — Tuesday will be the worst day to travel, but every day except Thanksgiving will feature "heavy" traffic.
I-93, Boston to New Hampshire — Northbound and southbound travel will be worst on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but Tuesday will have the heaviest traffic.
I-95, Rhode Island to I-93 — Northbound travel should be OK all week, but southbound traffic will be very heavy, with Wednesday being the most congested day.
I-495, Mass Pike to Route 3 — Should be pretty clear all week, except southbound travel during afternoon hours on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Mass Pike, I-84 to I-495 — On the flip side, the eastbound side of this often clogged stretch of I-90 will be worst on the Saturday and Sunday after Thanksgiving as people return home to the state. But westbound traffic will be bad all week, including Thanksgiving.
MassDOT will also take steps to prevent added delays by stopping all construction on Tuesday, and by keeping the I-93 HOV lanes between Boston and Quincy open for extra afternoon hours on Tuesday and Wednesday. MassDOT also will not use the Sumner Tunnel swing lane on Thursday and Friday due to increased Logan Airport traffic.
On the public transit side, the MBTA will be operating on holiday schedules around Thanksgiving. However, the T will add Silver Line trips this weekend and the weekend after Thanksgiving due to increased Logan travelers.

A massive blizzard howls in the Sierra Nevada. High winds and heavy snow close roads and ski resorts
TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) — A powerful blizzard that a meteorologist termed “as bad as it gets” howled in the Sierra Nevada mountains, closing a long stretch of Interstate 80 in Northern California, forcing ski resorts to shut down, and leaving thousands of homes without power.
More than 10 feet (3 meters) of snow was expected at higher elevations, National Weather Service meteorologist William Churchill said Saturday, creating a “life-threatening concern” for residents near Lake Tahoe and blocking travel on the key east-west freeway.
“It’s a blizzard,” said Dubravka Tomasin, a resident of Truckee, California, for more than a decade. “It’s pretty harrowing.”
Kyle Frankland, a veteran snow-plow driver, said several parts of his rig broke as he cleared wet snow underneath piles of powder.
“I’ve been in Truckee 44 years. This is a pretty good storm,” Frankland said. “It’s not record-breaking by any means, but it’s a good storm.”
Churchill said snow totals by late Sunday would range from 5 to 12 feet (1.5 to 3.6 meters), with the highest accumulations at elevations above 5,000 feet (1,500 meters). Lower elevations were inundated with heavy rain.
He called the storm an “extreme blizzard for the Sierra Nevada, in particular, as well as other portions of Nevada and even extending into Utah and portions of western Colorado.” But he said he didn’t expect records to be broken.
“It’s certainly just about as bad as it gets in terms of the snow totals and the winds,” Churchill said. “It doesn’t get much worse than that.”
A second, weaker storm was forecast to bring an additional 1 to 2 feet of snow in the region between Monday and Wednesday next week, according to the National Weather Service office in Sacramento.
Near Lake Tahoe, Thomas Petkanas, a bartender at Alibi Ale Works in Incline Village, Nevada, said about 3 feet (1 meter) of snow had fallen by midday Saturday. He said patrons shook off snow as they arrived at the brewpub and restaurant.
“It’s snowing pretty hard out there, really windy, and power is out to about half the town,” Petkanas said by telephone. “We’re one of the few spots open today.”
Adele Attix said her husband spent the morning clearing their driveway while she worried about whether she would be able to open her consignment clothing store in Truckee. She said Saturdays are usually the busiest day of the week.
“I’d say more than anything, just knowing if we’re going to open or not has probably caused the most amount of stress,” Attix said. “I figured I’d come down here and check out the shop.”
Earlier, the weather service warned that blowing snow was creating “extremely dangerous to impossible” driving conditions, with wind gusts in the high mountains at more than 100 mph (160 kph).
Avalanche danger was “high to extreme” in backcountry areas through Sunday evening throughout the central Sierra and greater Lake Tahoe area, the weather service said.
California authorities on Friday shut down 100 miles (160 kilometers) of I-80, the main route between Reno and Sacramento, because of “spin outs, high winds, and low visibility.” There was no estimate when the freeway would reopen from the California-Nevada border west of Reno to near Emigrant Gap, California.
Travel was treacherous east of the Sierra, where CalTrans also cited “multiple spin outs and collisions” and “whiteout conditions,” as it closed 90 miles (145 kilometers) of U.S. 395 from near Bishop in the Owens Valley to Bridgeport, north of Mono Lake.
Pacific Gas & Electric reported about 7,468 California homes and businesses without power at 5:56 p.m. NV Energy reported power outages for about 1,500 customers in parts of northern Nevada, including Incline Village and Reno.
In southern Nevada the weather service issued a warning Saturday for high winds gusting to 70 mph (145 kph). NV Energy reported almost 29,000 customers without power in and around Las Vegas on Saturday, but by that evening the number had been reduced to about 16,000.
A tornado Friday afternoon in Madera County, California, damaged an elementary school, said Andy Bollenbacher, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Hanford.
Some ski resorts shut down Friday and were digging out Saturday with an eye toward reopening Sunday.
Palisades Tahoe, the largest resort on the north end of Tahoe and site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, closed all chairlifts Saturday because of snow, wind and low visibility.
Other areas closed Saturday included Sugar Bowl, Boreal and Sierra. Heavenly Mountain Resort planned to open late with limited operations.
The storm began barreling into the region Thursday. A blizzard warning through Sunday morning covers a 300-mile (480-kilometer) stretch of the mountains.
Some ski lovers raced up to the mountains ahead of the storm.
Daniel Lavely, an avid skier who works at a Reno-area home/construction supply store, was not one of them. He said Friday that he wouldn’t have considered making the hour-drive to ski on his season pass at a Tahoe resort because of the gale-force winds.
But most of his customers Friday seemed to think the storm wouldn’t be as bad as predicted, he said.
“I had one person ask me for a shovel,” Lavely said. “Nobody asked me about a snowblower, which we sold out the last storm about two weeks ago.”
Meteorologists predicted as much as 10 feet (3 meters) of snow was possible in the mountains around Lake Tahoe by the weekend, with 3 to 6 feet (0.9 to 1.8 meters) in the communities on the lake’s shores and more than a foot (30 centimeters) possible in the valleys on the Sierra’s eastern front, including Reno.
Yosemite National Park closed Friday. Officials said it would remain closed through at least noon Sunday.
Ritter reported from Las Vegas. Associated Press reporters Scott Sonner in Reno, Nevada; Janie Har in San Francisco; Julie Walker in New York; and Hollie Ramer in Concord, New Hampshire, contributed to this report.

American Airlines flight headed to Spain diverted to Boston over windshield crack: Reports
American airlines said that flight aa94 from new york's jfk to madrid was diverted "due to a maintenance issue," and landed safely in boston..
A Spain-bound American Airlines flight from New York City made an emergency landing at Boston's Logan International Airport Wednesday night "due to a maintenance issue".
American Airlines Flight 94 took off from JFK Airport in New York City a little before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, according to FlightAware , and was headed to Madrid, Spain when it was diverted to Boston just two and half hours into the flight, landing at Logon Airport at 10:03 pm.
In a statement to USA TODAY, American Airlines said that the flight was diverted "due to a maintenance issue," and that it landed safely at Boston, where the "aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team."
CBS News, citing the Massachusetts State Police, reported that the flight was diverted because of a crack that appeared in the windshield. The state police did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for more information.
No one was injured in the incident and passengers on board the flight will re-depart for Madrid on a replacement aircraft, said American Airlines. The flight to Madrid is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. EST Thursday from Boston, according to FlightAware.
Customers were forced to spend the night in Boston though the airlines provided hotel accommodations overnight.

American Airlines apologizes for inconvenience over diverted flight
The airlines also apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers.
"We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience this has caused," said the statement.
Recent airplane incidents
Wednesday's incident is the latest in a string of incidents that has reignited the debate on airline safety, especially with jets manufactured by Boeing. The issue first came to the forefront when an Alaska Airlines flight from Portland, Oregon, to Ontario, California, made a dramatic emergency landing on Jan. 5 after a piece of the fuselage burst off at 16,000 feet.
Fortunately, all passengers and crew onboard deplaned safely in Portland but the flight, which was operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 9 jet, highlighted safety concerns with many airlines grounding several of their Boeing jets .
The aircraft in Wednesday's incident was a Boeing 777-200 jet, according to FlightAware.

Cracked windshield forces American Airlines flight to make emergency landing in Boston
By Mike Toole
Updated on: February 29, 2024 / 6:21 AM EST / CBS Boston
BOSTON - An American Airlines flight bound for Spain was forced to divert to Logan Airport in Boston Wednesday night because of a cracked windshield, according to Massachusetts State Police.
American Airlines flight 94
American Airlines Flight 94 took off from JFK Airport in New York City and was headed to Madrid, Spain when it was diverted to Boston because of what the airline said was a "maintenance issue."
The flight landed safely at 10:14 p.m. at Logan Airport and it taxied to the gate under its on own power. American Airlines said the jet was taken out of service to be inspected by their maintenance team.
No one was hurt. Passengers were forced to spend the night in Boston. They'll leave for Madrid on a new flight on a replacement jet Thursday afternoon.
American Airlines apology
"We never want to disrupt our customers' travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience this has caused," American Airlines said in a statement to WBZ-TV.
"How does a multi-millionaire company with so many resources not foresee this," passenger Nico Moreno told WBZ after getting off the flight.
"The type of solution they give you is very minimal in terms of, you don't make up for the money I lose when I miss my job. You don't make up the time I lose for everything I have at home, all the situations, no? And all the situations these people have."
Recent airline incidents
U.S. airline safety has been under renewed scrutiny after the door panel of an Alaska Airlines flight blew out in mid-air last month, just minutes after the Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft had taken off from Portland, Oregon.
A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board determined that four bolts which were meant to hold the door plug in place were missing.
