Why a cruise with flight?

If you do not want to spend several weeks at sea, the travel options are usually limited from your home port. Destinations in the Far East, the US or a round trip in the Mediterranean seem so unattainable. If you book the flight separately, you may expect some unpleasant surprises: fares can fluctuate greatly and you may have to take the flight on the day of your dream at a particularly low price. Even if a passable flight is found, it can still be late and cause a delay in your arrival at your departure port.

This does not happen to you with our cruise with flight offers: Find your cruise with flight and benefit not only from the low airfare, but also from a smooth journey. The airport transfer takes care of getting you from the airport to the ship in time. Even if you have a delayed or delayed flight, you do not have to worry, as the cruise line will take care of your cruise. Depending on the circumstances, the ship will either wait for you or you will be taken to the nearest port and board.

Fly Cruise Shipping Companies

Many cruise lines offer the practical combination offer, but you will often find it at Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises . Of course, this also depends on the distance of your desired destination, since not every cruise route is suitable for a combination offer with flight. We are happy to assist you in choosing a suitable trip.

Find the best cruise vacation for you

How can i find a cheap cruise.

Cheap cruise deals are fairly easy to find in most cases, and you can begin by considering what kind of features and itinerary you want. The more simplistic the experience is, the cheaper it is in general. On Expedia.com, you can filter for specific features and sort your results by price. By mixing and matching certain features, unforgettable experiences may be available with discount cruises. For example, booking a cruise with stunning restaurants and live performances while opting for an inside cabin without an ocean view window or balcony could be ideal for a traveler who doesn't plan on spending much time in their cabin anyways

What is the cheapest month to take a cruise?

The cheapest month to take a cruise varies based on your destination and the cruise line company that runs the ship. A Caribbean cruise , for example, is generally cheapest in the late summer and early fall since it's the local hurricane season.

Can I cancel my cruise booking?

Yes, you can cancel, but there may be fees for canceling depending on how far in advance you cancel and what kind of booking you have. You can check the specific cruise lines’ cancellation policies in your itinerary on Expedia.com.

Are river cruises worth the money?

River cruises are quite relaxing, with much more varied scenery than you'd experience on an ocean cruise. These ships often also feature several stops along the river, so passengers can enjoy a greater variety of destinations to explore. Viking river cruises are especially adept at providing this unforgettable experience.

What cruises are best for families?

The best family cruises in 2024 / 2025 tend to be Disney cruises with plenty of offerings for kids and adults alike, though MSC cruises are known for their iconic Children Cruise Free promotion. Disney cruises, specifically, are essentially a Disney theme park on a boat with live shows, rides, and attractions with your kids' favorite characters.

How much does a cruise ship cost?

Cruise prices can vary quite a bit, with cheap cruises and especially luxurious all-inclusive cruises available. Budget lines can offer cruise tickets as low as $50 per night in some cases, while the more high-end experiences can reach up to $1,000 per night and more.

What are some of the best cruise lines?

Several different cruise lines have a lot to offer, such as Viking cruises , which are known for traversing oceans and rivers with a style that blends outdoor and indoor splendor. Celebrity cruise line is more upscale with luxurious features like WiFi, included beverages, champagne, and suites with panoramic views. Other top cruise lines include Royal Caribbean International , Carnival Cruise , Disney Cruise , and Norwegian Cruise .

How far in advance do you need to book a cruise?

It's generally best to book a cruise about 6 to 12 months before your cruise departure. That's the safest way to balance availability and affordability. Technically, you can book earlier or later than that, with some last-minute cruise deals occasionally available up to a weekbefore cruise departure.

Are cruise trips affordable?

They can be, and it's especially simple to search for more affordable cruises with Expedia.com. Not only can you filter by cruise length, cruise line, and cabin experience, but you may also sort your results by price to put the more affordable options first on your search results page.

What is it like to go on a cruise?

A cruise is generally designed to offer the most relaxing experience possible. Despite the size of the ship, it's possible to feel the wave. Many passengers report that the movements help them sleep. Additionally, many fun cruises offer live stage performances, several restaurants, and shopping opportunities. When the ship is in international waters, you may even be able to enjoy a bit of tax-free shopping.

Are cruises a good way to travel?

Cruise travel is great if you're looking for some varied fun. Compared to a plane or a train, cruises have their own attractions and can be considered an integral part of cruise vacations. Plus, a cruise can hit several different destinations as well, with plenty of time to enjoy the cruise and scenic locales. It's certainly worth it for a unique experience no other method of travel can match.

Which cruise line is the cheapest?

The actual cheapest cruise available depends on a variety of different factors. Still, Carnival Cruise tends to be very affordable overall, most of the time with great options like the Carnival Sunrise and Carnival Horizon . Royal Caribbean is also another fantastic cruise line offering great deals if you are watching your budget.

How can I get the best cruise deals in 2024 / 2025?

If you're looking for some of the best cruise deals, booking through Expedia.com makes it easy since you can sort your cruise search results by price and have access to special deals. One Key members can earn  OneKeyCash  on all eligible bookings and get instant discounts with Member Prices. Sign up today!

What do I need to know when I book a cruise?

To book a cruise, you'll need to know where you'll be setting off from and where you'll be going, in addition to how many people will be with you and the features of the specific cruise you book. Keep in mind that you'll want to factor in spending money in your budget for the cruise's restaurants and shops in most cases.

Where should I go on a cruise in 2024 / 2025?

Plenty of incredible cruise destinations are accessible such as cruises to the Bahamas and cruises to Mexico . You may also be interested in cruises to Alaska or cruises to Europe for something outside of the Caribbean.

What countries are best to visit by cruise ship?

A lot of countries are accessible via a cruise, but the best include a cruise to Australia . However, a cruise to Australia is quite a long trip at sea and really allows you to take in everything the cruise ship has to offer.

Can I get last-minute cruise deals?

Yes, last-minute cruise deals are often available, and you can find them on Expedia.com by inputting your travel dates in your search and sorting your results by price. The deals will automatically be applied to the price estimates so that the cheapest estimates will show up first on your search results page.

Are cruises all-inclusive?

Cruises aren't always all-inclusive, but they can be. If you're interested in all-inclusive cruises, you can activate a search filter for it to ensure your search results only show cruises that meet your all-inclusive standard.

Is food free on a cruise?

Food is sometimes free on a cruise, but there are often specialty restaurants that aren't included with the general booking that you'll have to pay for separately. Check the details of each cruise before you book in the "What's included" section after clicking the cruise on your search results page.

What cruise lines are adults only?

Several lines offer adults-only cruise experiences, including Viking cruises , Carnival cruises , and Princess cruises . With an adults-only cruise, you can relax in a tranquil and laid-back setting without kids running around and enjoy all the cocktails you want.

What cruise lines are considered to be the most luxurious?

Viking cruises are considered exceptionally luxurious, with smaller ships and larger cabins that make them feel more exclusive, but Celebrity cruises offer luxury cruise lines too. Booking a luxury cruise means you can expect high-end amenities including gourmet restaurants, sizable suites, top-tier performances, massive pools, and much more.

What are the best cruises for couples?

Viking Cruises have much to offer for a more romantic experience. Holland America Line cruises can be quite refined and romantic as well, with an adult-oriented experience that's sophisticated rather than rowdy. Romantic cruises offer exceptional service as well as cozy suites for you and your partner to enjoy that's complemented by delicious food often themed around the cruise destination.

Why should I go on a cruise for my honeymoon?

Going on a cruise is a great way for you and your new spouse to be pampered with luxury while also being able to explore a new destination. Whether you're taking a cruise to Hawaii or a cruise to Bermuda , a particularly romantic experience is almost guaranteed thanks to the sheer number of things to do.

Are there any Christmas cruises?

Yes, quite a few cruise lines operate around Christmas, and you can find them easily by entering travel dates around Christmas into your 2024 cruise search. Some of the most popular Christmas cruises are available with Carnival and Disney.

Do I need a passport to go on a cruise?

Whether or not you need a passport depends on where you're going and the kind of cruise it is. Any US territory like Bermuda and Puerto Rico won't require a passport, of course, but you also don't need one if you're on a closed-loop cruise. This is a cruise that begins and ends at a US cruise terminal, even if there are stops in other countries on the way.

Why should I book a cruise with Expedia.com?

Booking a cruise with Expedia.com makes it easy to find a cruise type that works best for you. You can use the cruise finder and sort by cruise line, type, destination, length, and itinerary. One Key members also earn OneKeyCash on all eligible bookings that can be used to save on future eligible trips.

What happens if a cruise is canceled?

Every cruise has a different cancellation policy, but generally, passengers are entitled to either a full refund or a credit for a future cruise at a later date. Remember that they may automatically change your booking to their rescheduled date, so you may have to contact them if that date doesn't work for your schedule.

*OneKeyCash is not redeemable for cash and can only be used on Expedia,  Hotels.com  and Vrbo.

Cruise Holidays

New horizons - and waking up to them - fresh vistas every time you pull back those curtains, and relaxing on some of the most exciting ships ever to sail the seven seas. We know what makes a cruise, and know every ship from top to bottom, stem to stern. We know the best ports to call at, and the best ways to combine a cruise trip with the perfect destination whether it's one, two or three! With two-thirds of this big, beautiful world covered in ocean, luxury, adventure, and even water slides aren’t limited to just dry land anymore.

Cruise Types

Whether this is your first cruise trip or your 21st, there’s a lot of open water out there to explore, and a lot of choice when it comes to destinations, resorts and the cruises themselves. We wouldn’t want you to feel overwhelmed when it comes to planning your time sailing the ocean blue, so we’re here to break down our cruise types for you.

cruise and stay

Cruise and stay

Cruise & Stay holidays merge everything that rocks about cruise holidays with a fun-filled stay in an extraordinary place. Whether you want a blissful beach break or to stick around to explore a city, you can easily pair it with an epic cruise experience to keep your journey constantly fresh and vibrant. Party, relax and treat yourself onboard before getting up close and personal with a fantastic destination, all in one holiday.

Fly cruise

Fly and cruise

Booking a fly and cruise option gets you to your holiday destination quicker than setting sail from a UK port, so you can reach those gorgeous Caribbean islands in a shorter space of time. Family watching out for whales on an Alaskan Cruise

OF ICE AND MOUNTAINS

Adventuring in Alaska is all about getting to know this state's stunning landscape. It might seem cold and unforgiving at first glance, but the best Alaska cruises allow you to explore the quiet lakes,  imposing glaciers  and breathtaking mountain views, you'll have only warm impressions of this wilderness.

Seals in Alaska Inside Passage

JOURNEY INWARD

Exploring the interior of Alaska will give you an entirely different perspective on this vast and rugged state. Take an Inside Passage cruise and gaze upward at the sky that is as blue as the lakes below. Hop on the Alaskan Railroad near Anchorage and see the spruce-lined, mountainous landscape whir by from a new perspective.

Majestic Glacier in Alaska

GLACIERS WILL MOVE YOU

In Alaska, ancient rivers of ice wind between mountains and grind out of valleys. Towering walls of ice like the Hubbard Glacier, Endicott Arm Dawes and the twin Sawyer Glaciers thunder as they calve  massive icebergs . Some shore excursions allow up close interaction with these natural wonders.

Magnificent Denali National Park Alaska

JOURNEY TO 'THE GREAT ONE'

In the centre of the state,  Denali National Park  is blanketed in wildflowers punctuated with mountains, raging rivers and serene lakes. Denali, 'The Great One', formerly known as Mt McKinley, rises to the tallest peak in North America and can be seen from as far away as Anchorage on a clear day. An up-close view is more than worth the expedition during your holiday.

Beautiful Mountain View in the National Park, Icy Strait Point, Alaska

FEEL THE RUSH

Alaska is tailor-made for once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Whether you sail its icy bays trying to spot huge cold-water whales or fly high above this rough-and-tumble landscape from the vantage of a helicopter, you're sure to come away with memories you couldn't have made anywhere else during your cruise to Alaska.

Alaska Dog Sledding Excursion

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?

In some parts of the state, dog sledding is still the primary mode of transportation through the winter months. Visit Alaska and get the experience for yourself at the  Skagway Yukon Discovery and Dog Sled Tour . The Siberian Huskies are sweet and energetic, and the ride is a thrill.

Whale Watching Activity in Alaska

WHERE ARE THE WHALES AT?

Head to Kenai Fjords National Park in Seward for a  whale-watching tour . There's nothing like seeing these behemoths hurl themselves out of the water, to splash back into the sea. Don't pass up an opportunity to watch these giants feed and play in the water.

Alaska Charter Helicopter Tour

Planes are plentiful in Alaska, where they're a common form of transportation across the state. Charter a helicopter or fixed-wing flightseeing tour at Juneau and get an unforgettable perspective of the mountains and glaciers of this vast landscape.

You can add once-in-a-lifetime to the itinerary for your wildest week ever. Go wildlife spotting in Juneau, peak-seeking in Sitka and take-on rugged adventure in Haines. Getting to your coolest getaway yet is easy for the whole family with sails roundtrip from Vancouver

Radiance at Hubbard Glacier - Alaska

RADIANCE OF THE SEAS

Sail into the Last Frontier from Seward or Vancouver onboard Radiance of the Seas®. With over three acres of windows and glass exterior viewing lifts, you can watch for whales along Alaska’s Inside Passage when you aren’t wandering wilderness paths from Ketchikan to Juneau. And for the ultimate outdoor adventure, take a CruiseTour into Alaska’s interior where you can hang with huskies in Denali, and scale glaciers in Alyeska.

Alaska is not a formal place; people even wear jeans to the opera. Focus more on comfort when deciding what clothing to pack.

Cameras, binoculars, rain ponchos and jackets are useful, but add these to the souvenirs you'll be picking up and soon your bag will be too heavy to tote around. Bring along a quality day pack to make it easier to hold your necessities.

Learn a few words in Alaska's local lingo: the 'Alcan' is the Alaska-Canada Highway, for example, and 'fish stories' are the local version of tall stories – unreliable tales of mythological proportions, often told by fisherman.

ALASKAN CUISINE WILD IS THE WAY

Alaskan food focuses on locally sourced ingredients that reflect the state's rugged terrain and the vast oceans surrounding it. These nutrient-rich waters serve up some gorgeous fish and shellfish, from super-fresh salmon to huge Alaskan King Crabs that can feed a crowd, while game meats and berries from the wilderness form a perfect marriage of flavour.

Best Alaska Smoked Salmon

SALMON IS CENTRAL

Freshly caught wild salmon is served up at backyard BBQs and the finest restaurants. For something different, try the sweet and savoury treat Indian Candy, salmon that is sweetened and smoked till hard.

Typical Alaskan Sourdough Bread

SOURDOUGH WON'T LET YOU GO

Sourdough is such an important part of Alaskan culture that long-time Alaskans are actually called sourdoughs in local parlance. Try a sourdough bread bowl filled with salmon chowder for a hearty lunch.

Alaskan Wild Berries Pie Dessert

GO WILD FOR BERRIES

Alaskan wild berries are sweet and pack a powerful punch of flavour. Whether served up in jams, sweets, pies or cobblers, Alaskan blueberries, high-bush cranberries and other local wild berries are a staple when it comes to Alaskan summer eats.

RELATED PORTS

Whether you're interested in hiking through a forest, trekking to glaciers or a shopping spree downtown, the towns along Alaska's inside passage provide a variety of adventurous activities. Alaska cruise ports such as Juneau and Ketchikan are small cities with their own personalities. Anchorage is the state's largest city and a gateway to the rest of the state. Denali National Park takes you out of the city altogether, into a wilderness full of spruce forests and snow-capped mountain peaks.

Breaking News

Florida news | super tuesday 2024 democrat and republican presidential primary election results, florida news, subscriber only, florida news | desantis says spring break hot spots will get extra help from state troopers this year.

Police interact with beachgoers in Fort Lauderdale as Spring Break begins on Saturday, March 2, 2024. (John McCall/South Florida Sun Sentinel)

Spring Breakers looking for a good time will surely find it here in the Sunshine State.

But troublemakers intent on causing chaos and mayhem also will find more cops on patrol and ready to enforce the laws of the land, Gov Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday during a news conference in Miami Beach.

Florida is sending in 140 state troopers to assist 17 cities across the state that have requested help keeping order during Spring Break, including Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Miami Beach, Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach, DeSantis told reporters.

“If you’re coming here and you’re committing crimes and causing havoc, you are going to pay the price,” DeSantis said. “We will hold you accountable. That’s what we do here. That is not going to fly in the Sunshine State.”

In addition, the Florida Highway Patrol is providing 24 “Quick Response” troopers in Broward, Dade, Volusia and Bay counties to immediately respond to incidents requiring additional law enforcement personnel.

The news was a surprise to Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis.

“Things are fun and quiet here in Fort Lauderdale,” Trantalis said Tuesday. “We don’t want to create an environment like a combat zone. This is a free and open beach for everyone to enjoy. I have complete faith in our first responders to handle anything, but I appreciate the state’s offer to help in case of an emergency.”

Fort Lauderdale City Manager Greg Chavarria says the state offered assistance to all coastal communities.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department accepted the offer. State troopers will be assisting with traffic management near A1A and Seabreeze Boulevard, a notoriously busy area.

Trantalis made note of the message being put out by Miami Beach that it’s “breaking up” with Spring Break after enduring a climate of chaos over the past few years. But he’s not sure the message is having the intended effect.

“Miami Beach is putting out messaging that they are a place for bad boys,” Trantalis said. “That’s like catnip, drawing them there. You think Miami Beach is closed? The place is packed.”

In recent years, Miami Beach has become ground zero for spring break mayhem.

There was trouble in 2021, when officers made more than 1,000 arrests. In 2022, five people were injured in two separate shootings on Ocean Drive, generating headlines across the globe. Last year, police responded to two shootings on Ocean Drive that left two people dead. The number of arrests: Nearly 500.

Each year, Miami Beach has declared a state of emergency in response to the overwhelming crowds and sometimes deadly gun violence. Curfews were imposed and causeways closed in an attempt to calm the chaos on the streets.

This year, state troopers will be on hand at the start to help with traffic flow and any other issues that arise, DeSantis said.

“We’re a law and order state,” he said. “Florida is a very welcoming state. We welcome people to come and have a good time. What we don’t welcome is criminal activity.”

More than 60 state troopers are being sent to South Florida alone, DeSantis said. Another 60 are heading to Spring Break hot spots such as Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach.

The Florida Highway Patrol and local police will be relying on mobile license plate readers to track down people with outstanding warrants and stolen vehicles, DeSantis said.

Visitors to Miami Beach will also find DUI checkpoints, curfews, bag checks and early beach closures.

Uniformed officers will be patrolling in vehicles, ATVs, bicycles, on foot and along the waterways, DeSantis said.

“The state’s got a lot going on,” the governor said. “It’s a fun place to be. We want to see people (have fun). But we are also going to insist that people respect the law, that order is kept in the streets. We want to keep people safe.”

Shift in Russian Tactics Intensifies Air War in Ukraine

Moscow’s recent gains in the east have been aided by more aggressive air support on the front lines. But that also has helped Ukraine shoot down enemy planes in the past two weeks.

A Ukrainian antiaircraft tank in a wooded area fires into the sky as a soldier, standing next to it, watches.

By Constant Méheut

Reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine

The Ukraine war has been fought largely on the ground in the past two years, with troops often locked in back-and-forth battles with heavy artillery and drone support. The countries’ air forces have played second fiddle because of Ukraine’s limited fleet of planes and Russia’s inability to gain the air supremacy it once expected.

But as the Russian military presses on with attacks in the east , its air force has taken on a greater role. Military analysts say Russia has increasingly used warplanes near the front lines to drop powerful guided bombs on Ukrainian positions and clear a path forward for the infantry. That tactic, used most notably in Avdiivka, the strategic eastern city captured by Russian forces last month , has yielded good results, experts say.

It has also come with risks.

“It’s a costly but quite effective tool that Russia is now using in the war,” said Serhiy Hrabskyi, a retired Ukrainian army colonel. “It’s dangerous for them to send their fighter jets” close to the front line, he added, but it can “impact Ukrainian positions effectively.”

The Ukrainian Army last week said it had shot down seven Su-34 fighter jets, nearly all operating in the east, just a few days after downing an A-50 long-range radar reconnaissance aircraft. It was, according to Ukrainian officials, part of a series of successful strikes against the Russian Air Force, in which Ukraine claimed to have shot down 15 planes in as many days.

The majority of the shootdowns could not be independently verified, and a senior U.S. official expressed skepticism at that number. The official said the Ukrainians appear to be taking credit in some instances for planes they fire at but which are not confirmed to have been downed.

Oryx, a military analysis site that counts losses based on visual evidence, and Russian military bloggers confirmed the loss of two Su-35 fighter jets. Britain’s military intelligence services confirmed the destruction of the A-50 plane.

Justin Bronk, a senior research fellow for air power and technology at the Royal United Services Institute in London, or RUSI, cautioned that “overclaiming on kills is a systemic feature of air warfare.”

But he added that Ukraine “has certainly been conducting an increasing number of ambush type engagements” with the help of air defense systems in recent months and has racked up “notable successes.”

Tom Karako, the director of the Missile Defense Project at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the Russian losses probably were the result of “some relationship between the Russian aircraft being put in harm’s way,” Ukraine’s intelligence gathering on the movements of Russian planes and the deployment of air-defense systems “to take them out.”

After the invasion in February 2022, Ukraine managed to keep Russia from controlling the skies through air combat and the skillful use of antiaircraft missiles. After only a month and heavy losses among its warplanes, Russia stopped flying its aircraft beyond the front lines, RUSI said in a report, turning instead to launching barrages of cruise and ballistic missiles from afar.

But that left Russia “unable to effectively employ the potentially heavy and efficient aerial firepower” of its fighter-bombers to strike Ukrainian frontline positions, the report said.

This began to change early last year when Russia started using glide bombs , guided munitions that are dropped from a plane and can fly long distances to the front lines, limiting the risk to planes from antiaircraft missiles. Carrying hundreds of kilograms of explosives, the glide bombs can smash through the underground bunkers that protect soldiers at the front.

“These bombs completely destroy any position,” Egor Sugar, a Ukrainian soldier who fought in Avdiivka, wrote on social media . “All buildings and structures simply turn into a pit after the arrival of just one.”

Ukrainian officials and military analysts said Russian aviation had played an important role in the capture of Avdiivka, one that required Russian jets “to fly closer” to the front line to maximize the effect of the glide bombs. And that exposed them to the risk of being shot down by Ukraine’s air defenses.

In late December, the Ukrainian Army said it destroyed three Su-34 jets near the Russian-controlled eastern bank of the Dnipro River in the south, where Ukrainian troops have secured small positions . Then came the shootdowns in the east.

It remains unclear which air-defense systems Ukraine has deployed. But some army officials and analysts have hinted at the use of U.S.-made Patriot systems, America’s most advanced ground-based air defense system.

The Institute for the Study of War , a Washington-based think tank, said “Russian forces appeared to tolerate an increased rate of aviation losses in recent weeks in order to conduct glide bomb strikes in support of ongoing Russian offensive operations in eastern Ukraine.”

One of Ukraine’s biggest successes in the air battle was the destruction last week of one of Russia’s A-50 radar planes — the second this year — which are critical in coordinating aerial bombardments of Ukrainian positions on the front. “Taking out their eyes, and taking out their targeting ability, that’s a pretty good win,” Mr. Karako said.

Britain’s military intelligence said Russia had seven other A-50s but that it had “highly likely grounded the fleet from flying” in support of its military operations to prevent further losses, thus reducing the “situational awareness provided to aircrews.”

The Ukrainian Air Force said Russian aviation activity in eastern Ukraine had significantly subsided by Saturday evening.

Ukraine has also sought to degrade Moscow’s naval capabilities, causing significant damage to Russia’s Black Sea fleet since the war began, according to Ukrainian officials and military analysts. On Tuesday, the Ukrainian army claimed to have sunk another Russian warship off the coast of Russian-occupied Crimea, using sea drones .

It is unclear how long Russia can sustain air losses. RUSI analysts said last month that Russian aircrew losses amounted to nearly 160 personnel, which they described as “a serious loss of capability.”

The Russian state news agency Tass said on Thursday that the state-owned defense conglomerate Rostec would resume production of the A-50 “since it is needed by the Russian armed forces.”

Mr. Hrabskyi, the retired colonel, likened Russia’s costly strategy in the air to its tactics on the ground, where it has sent wave after wave of troops in bloody assaults to capture cities, regardless of the human cost. “The Russians don’t care,” he said. “If they have an order, they will use all available capabilities, all available weapons systems to attack.”

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

The Ukraine war has been fought largely on the ground in the past two years. But as the Russian military presses on with attacks in the east, its air force has taken on a greater role .

As President Vladimir Putin of Russia threatened nuclear escalation if NATO troops entered the conflict in Ukraine, statements by President Emmanuel Macron of France  and Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany  exposed how Western allies were struggling to maintain unity.

As the death toll from a Russian strike on an apartment building in the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa rose to 12, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said delays by allies in supplying air defenses had contributed to the deaths .

Holding a Sliver of Hope: A Russian mother knows her son, a conscript, died 14 months ago in a battle in eastern Ukraine. But she is still waiting for him.

A Long Fight: On the second anniversary  of Russia’s invasion, many weary but determined Ukrainians  are taking a longer view of the war , pinpointing the Maidan uprising of 2014 as the start of a 10-year conflict with their adversary.

Sending a Message: Two years since the start of the war in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin of Russia has fully embraced the image of an unpredictable strongman  ready to escalate his conflict with the West.

This 132-day World Cruise Will Circle the Planet in 2026 — and Visit All 7 Continents

The itinerary is Holland America's most ambitious to date.

cruise and fly 2022

For those looking to visit all seven of the world's continents, you'll soon be able to check off all those boxes with a single trip. Holland America just announced a 2026 Grand World Voyage that visits each one over 132 days in a true circumnavigation of the planet.

Sailing round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the 1,432-passenger Volendam, the voyage will depart on Jan. 4, 2026, sailing south along the east coast of South America, all the way to Antarctica. (It's important to note that the Antarctica portion of the trip will be scenic cruising only — you won't be able to get off the ship and set foot on land.)

From Antarctica, the Volendam will cross the South Pacific (and stop at Easter Island!), visit Australia, and continue to Southeast Asia.

Next up is a journey across the Indian Ocean with visits to the Maldives and Sri Lanka, followed by a transit of the Suez Canal. After a few stops in the Mediterranean, the ship will make for Northern Europe, then finish with a transatlantic crossing to take guests back to Fort Lauderdale.

All in, the Grand World Voyage will visit 47 ports in 39 countries, and there will be nine overnight calls in destinations like Rio de Janeiro and Bali.

"We asked thousands of past guests and travel advisors for their opinions about the perfect Grand World Voyage, so this may be one of our most thoroughly researched routes ever for a world cruise," Gus Antorcha, Holland America's president, said during the announcement, which took place aboard the Zuiderdam, which is currently sailing the 2024 Grand World Voyage. "This itinerary includes destinations we know guests love, packed with memorable moments and overnight stays. We are purposefully visiting fewer ports to allow more time to explore the destinations we visit and to create a voyage that does not feel rushed."

Though the voyage isn't yet open for bookings, you can register your interest through your travel advisor or by calling Holland America World Cruise Reservations at 1-800-522-3399. For context, the 124-day Grand World Voyage in 2025 starts at $24,999 per cabin based on double occupancy.

Tom Cruise’s 30-year mission to charm the Royal family

O ver the course of his 40-odd years as a Hollywood star, Tom Cruise has managed to break in and out of some of the world’s most impenetrable-seeming institutions: dastardly villains’ lairs, high-security bank vaults, three marriages of varying success and credibility.

But when it came to inveigling his way into the heart of the British Royal family, a feat hundreds of celebrities have tried but only a few have achieved, Cruise has made it look all too easy.

“Fancy seeing you here, Tom Cruise!” the X/Twitter account run on behalf of the Prince and Princess of Wales wrote last night, with a photograph of the Prince and Cruise, in matching black tie, at a London Air Ambulance fundraiser in London .

Fancy it indeed. It was William’s first public engagement since the illnesses of his wife and father (he took the time to thank people for their well wishes). Flying solo, then, he could likely have done with a little support for the evening.

Someone to provide a boost of glamour without Kate there to light up the room, perhaps. A microdose of charisma to enliven what might have been a lot of conversation about rotor blades and response times. A fraternal buddy, while Prince Harry builds his trove of Avios points. Well, nobody does “a little support” like the world’s highest-profile ambassador for platform shoes.

It feels reasonable to say that, at 61, Cruise is now far and away the Royal family’s favourite divorced American actor of all time. And the feeling is mutual, if Cruise’s commitment to attending various royal events is anything to go by – not least his hosting gig during the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.

His relationship with William and Kate is certainly established: two years ago, they attended the British premiere of Top Gun: Maverick , where Cruise escorted the Princess up some steps , and William wore velvet shoes by Crockett & Jones, embroidered with two F18s, the planes depicted in the film.

That night, the couple revealed they had been playing the film’s soundtrack at home with their children. The special velvet shoes (the film-going equivalent of wearing a Gryffindor scarf to the Warner Bros Studio Tour), meanwhile, also got a mention last night. Pointing to his feet, the Prince told his friend: “I haven’t got my Top Gun slippers on tonight!”

But Cruise did have his Tom Cruise costume on: megawatt smile, charm you could run a country off, all-action anecdotes, incorrigible Anglophilia. The Royal family have found it irresistible for decades, beginning with the Prince of Wales’s mother, Princess Diana. Cruise met Diana in at least 1992, when he and his then-wife Nicole Kidman greeted her at the London premiere of Far and Away .

Diana was said to be keen. According to one biography, she told a friend Cruise was “extremely fanciable”. Later, after her tragic death in 1997, he infamously called CNN live on air, condemning the actions of the media. It doesn’t even register in the Top 100 oddest things Cruise has done in his time as an A-lister, but it was still bizarre. Days later, he was among a select group of Hollywood talent, including Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, to attend Diana’s funeral at Westminster Abbey.

Cruise has always been a fan of Britain, whether that’s reportedly buying a home with Kidman in Dulwich Village; making the national news whenever he goes for a curry ; allegedly living at Saint Hill , the British headquarters of Scientology in East Grinstead during lockdown; or basing production of his never-ending Mission: Impossible series in the UK.

While he spent much of the Noughties in the United States, leaping on sofas and embedding himself further into Scientology, he maintained close contact with the UK. He has a home in Biggin Hill – handy for a frequent flyer but also for getting to Croydon, where Isabella, 31, the artist daughter he adopted with Nicole Kidman, has allegedly lived in recent years.

Showbiz friends of Diana weren’t automatically granted entry to Buckingham Palace, but Cruise managed it. In 2017, he met Prince Philip at a charity dinner at the Palace to mark the 75th anniversary of the Outward Bound Trust. Cruise, a petrolhead who can fly anything, got on with Philip.

“There was a moment, of course, we were talking about pilots, we had to talk about helicopters, and he was telling me the wonderful story of how he got the first helicopter into Buckingham Palace during [The Queen’s] coronation,” Cruise later recalled.

He would continue to pop up at various royal-adjacent events, from England football matches to Wimbledon, but his appointment as a guest presenter during the Platinum Jubilee still came as a surprise. He was one of four hosts at “A Gallop Through History” – an equestrian event held at Windsor Castle. Another was Alan Titchmarsh who, it was agreed, is very much the thinking British woman’s Tom Cruise.

“[The Queen] is just a woman that I greatly admire. I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion. What she has accomplished has been historic. I just remember always as a kid seeing photos of her,” Cruise said, explaining his appearance, which really did need explaining.

They didn’t meet that evening, but she had him over for tea another day in 2022, reportedly allowing him to land his helicopter in the Windsor Castle grounds and fire a ceremonial gun. Sources told a newspaper that they “really hit it off” – so much so that she invited him back for lunch. Regrettably for all concerned, she died before that date.

Not that it stopped Cruise’s slow mission to become an honorary member of the Royal family. Nothing would. His latest show of manful support for William shows both sides are as enthusiastic about one another as ever. “I should take this opportunity to thank my – our – fellow pilot Tom Cruise,” Prince William said in his speech last night. Cruise beamed. He’s dangerous, but he can be his wingman anytime, et cetera .

Realistically, this ends one of six ways: with an honorary knighthood for Cruise; a cameo in the next Mission: Impossible for William; an advert for that film being allowed to be projected all over Buckingham Palace for a year; Cruise calling LBC to complain that he found Meghan Markle’s Archetypes podcast “hopelessly derivative”; the King fiddling the paperwork to ensure Cruise is bequeathed Rutland; or all of the above.

With this man, nothing’s impossible. Fancy seeing you here, Tom Cruise? It’d be more surprising if he wasn’t.
