Bette Midler is a singer-songwriter actress and activist hailing from Hawaii, USA who was born on the 1st of December 1945. After starting her career in musical theatre, she launched a succesful pop career in the mid-seventies, and has become a true national treasure since then.

Born to a Jewish family in the distinctly non-Jewish city of Honolulu, Bette Midler was the quintessential shy child who came into her own on stage. She started performing in high school and came out of her shell in the process, to the extent where she was voted “most Talkative” when she was a junior in High School, and then “Most Dramatic” when she was a senior. Arguably, she discovered herself on stage, because she studied drama at the University of Hawaii for three semesters, and then decided to move to New York City after three semesters to pursue an actual career in it.

One doesn’t do that without knowing if it’s what you want to do, especially if one was as poor as Midler’s family was. Fortunately, in 1965 Midler appeared as an extra in the film “Hawaii”, and moved to New York full time with the money she earned from it. The move almost immediately paid off, with Midler securing a role in Tom Eyen’s Off-Off-Broadway plays the very same year and then spending four years in the cast of the Broadway run Fiddler On The Roof. However, after leaving Fiddler, her roles dried up and she found herself, like more actors than can possibly be counted, out of work. Unlike most actors that can possibly be counted, this might have been the best thing to happen to her at the time.

This is because she took a job singing at the Continental Baths, a bathhouse in the Ansonia Hotel that was a famed hangout in the New York City gay and lesbian scene. While she was there, she developed a riotously popular nightclub act starring herself as The Divine Miss M, a chanteuse and comedian known for outrageous stage patter and rich, powerful singing voice. A voice so enchanting that when Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertugun heard it, he immediately signed her to his label. 1972 saw the release of her debut album, fittingly named “The Divine Miss M”, which went platinum and netted Midler a Grammy award for Best New Artist (showing that the recipients of that award don’t always crash and burn spectacularly).

She spent the rest of the seventies as a singing sensation, periodically taking time out to perform in her first love, musical theatre, which earned her a Tony Award for contributions to theatre in 1974. It wasn’t until 1979 that she appeared on the silver screen, starring in the rock and roll tragedy picture The Rose, which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. After that Midler focused on producing and appearing in some less that stellar films for a couple of years, before bouncing back in 1986 with Down And Out In Beverly Hills, a film which jumpstarted her acting career again. She then capitalised two years later with the film Beaches, whose soundtrack became Midler’s biggest selling album, and contained her signature song “Wind Beneath My Wings”.

Ever since then, she’s been something of a national treasure working on film and television projects while releasing albums and touring a live show that sees her utterly in her element. Even today she remains a world-wide attraction, her “It’s The Girls” arena tour selling out and the accompanying album going gold in the U.K. It’s as good as fact that she’s a legend, and even in her fifth decade of showbusiness, she’s still in her prime. Highly recommended.

Live reviews

You only have to look at Bette Midler’s track record where awards are concerned to know that suggestions that she’s a genuine renaissance woman fall very close to the mark; over the course of a stunning career, she’s won two Academy Awards, three Grammy Awards, four Golden Globes and a special Tony award, too. As a recording artist, she’s sold more than thirty million albums across the globe, as well as having had eight albums go platinum and a further four go multi-platinum; musically speaking, she’s an American icon. Plans to continue touring these past few years were put on hold when Midler was offered a lucrative residency in Las Vegas at Caesar’s Palace; she completed the run, which lasted over two years, in 2010. Since, she’s returned to Broadway for the first time in thirty years and made a television comeback, too, putting her music career temporarily on the back burner; she has been discussing plans, however, to form a new girl group and release n album later in 2014, with a tour to follow. No doubt Midler will wheel out a few of her own classics on that jaunt - ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ included - so look out for UK dates.

Is there anything Bette Midler cannot do? She is one of this century's most awarded female artists in the fields of theatre, music and film. She has an impossibly large and loyal fanbase who have followed her glittering career from the very beginning and continue to flock to her lavish live shows.

Performing in a traditional manner, it is clear that for Midler theatre is at the very heart of everything she does and her music performance is very much inspired by the rich traditions of show. She performs as a leading lady, standing as the commander of the show beneath the spotlight in a stunning full length gown and allows her silky vocal to glide around the room.

She has great power within in too, hitting impressive notes during 'The Showgirl Must Go On'. She is a complete natural when it comes to crowd interaction and captivates her devoted crowds even further, if that seemed possible. A legend of entertainment proves she really is a master of craft.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on December 1, 1945, Bette Midler grew up in a predominantly Asian neighborhood and attended Radford High School. She went on to study drama at the University of Hawaii at Manoa; however, she never completed the course. With the money she had earned as an extra on the film Hawaii , she relocated to New York City in the summer of 1965. She soon landed roles Off-Off-Broadway in Tom Eyen’s Cinderella Revisited  and Miss Nefertiti Regrets.  Her big break would come just one year later in 1966, when she made her Broadway debut as Tzeitel in the original Broadway premiere of Fiddler on the Roof  at the Imperial Theatre. She was a member of the Broadway cast until 1969, when she would make her Off-Broadway debut as Betty Lou in the musical Salvation .

After striking up a friendship with Barry Manilow, Bette Midler launched her music career in 1972 with her debut album The Divine Miss M , which Manilow produced. Over the course of her career, she has released a total of 14 studio albums and won three Grammy Awards (with an additional nine nominations) including Best New Artist and nods for her hits The Rose  and Wind Beneath My Wings . Other standards include her renditions of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy , Do You Want to Dance , and From a Distance .

Bette Midler’s film career was launched with a breakthrough performance in The Rose  in 1979, which won her a Golden Globe and her first Academy Award nomination. Her second Oscar nomination came in 1991 after her performance in For the Boys . Over the years, she has starred in a plethora of hit movies, the most notable appearances being in Down and Out in Beverly Hills ,  Outrageous Fortune , Beaches , Hocus Pocus , The First Wives Club , and The Stepford Wives . On television, she also gained great acclaim for starring as Mama Rose in the 1993 TV movie version of Gypsy , winning her fourth Golden Globe, and for her TV comedy series Bette , which aired from 2000 to 2001.

Despite her skyrocketing music and film career, Midler has often remained loyal to the Broadway community. She has graced Broadway throughout the decades with special concert engagements such as Bette Midler  in 1973 (receiving a Special Tony Award for “adding lustre to the Broadway season” in 1974) , Bette Midler’s Clams on the Half Shell Revue  in 1975, and Bette! Divine Madness  in 1979, as well as a solo play called I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers  in 2013. She also served as a producer on the 2011 Broadway premiere of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert . However, it wasn’t until March 15, 2017, when she would once again appear in a traditional Broadway musical for the first time since Fiddler on the Roof . She took on the title role in the acclaimed 2017 Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!  and went on to win the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical at the 71st annual Tony Awards ceremony. She ended her run as Dolly Gallagher Levi on January 14, 2018.

Midler returned to her Tony-winning role for the final six weeks of the Broadway run of  Hello, Dolly!  from July 17 through August 25, 2018.

Original Tony Award-winning creators Pete Townshend and Des McAnuff have revised the musical, which played on Broadway in 1993.

The newly reimagined production of  The Who's Tommy , which had a sold-out run at Chicago's Goodman Theatre this past summer, has announced a spring 2024 Broadway bow. The rock musical will open March 28, 2024 at the Nederlander Theatre, with previews to begin March 8. Check out the teaser trailer above.

The Who's Tommy originally opened on Broadway in 1993, with a book by Des McAnuff and  Pete Townshend of The Who, music and lyrics by Townshend, and direction by McAnuff. The pair have reunited to reimagine the story, and McAnuff will return as director for the new production.

Casting will be announced at a later date.

Based on The Who's 1969 rock opera  Tommy , the musical follows the young Tommy Walker. After witnessing his father shoot his rival, Walker is emotionally lost, and spends his time staring endlessly staring into the mirror. Then an innate knack for pinball catapults him into celebrity status.

“In many ways, I think the world has caught up to Tommy Walker, which makes it exciting to revisit The Who’s Tommy for a new generation who, possibly more than any other, has a broad appetite for all kinds of music and storytelling,” McAnuff said in a statement.

The creative team includes choreographer Lorin Latarro ( Into the Woods ), music supervisor Ron Melrose ( Jersey Boys ), musical director Rick Fox ( Rent ), set designer David Korins ( Hamilton ), projection designer Peter Nigrini ( Here Lies Love ), costume designer Sarafina Bush ( for colored girls... ), lighting designer Amanda Zieve ( Escape to Margaritaville ), sound designer Gareth Owen ( Back to the Future ), and wig and hair designer by Charles LaPointe ( Hamilton ). The production also features additional music arrangements by Melrose, and additional orchestrations by Fox. Casting is by Tara Rubin Casting 's Merri Sugarman with additional Chicago casting by Lauren Port and Rachael Jimenez . Tripp Phillips is the production stage manager and Bespoke Theatricals is general manager.

"I can’t wait to see how this newly empowered show connects with younger Broadway audiences today," Townshend said in a statement. "I hope the younger ones come, for they will identify in an entirely new and important way with Tommy’s tumultuous life. Meanwhile, longtime fans of Tommy , The Who, and all their music will be blown away by this new show."

The original Broadway production of The Who's Tommy  opened April 22, 1993 at the St. James Theatre, after beginning previews March 29. McAnuff had first staged the work in 1992 at California's La Jolla Playhouse, where he was artistic director, before the production moved to Broadway the following year.

The Broadway cast was led by Michael Cerveris , Marcia Mitzman , Jonathan Dokuchitz , Paul Kandel , and Cheryl Freeman . The original ensemble featured several Broadway favorites, including Alice Ripley , Norm Lewis , and Sherie Rene Scott .

The production received five Tony Awards: Best Direction for McAnuff, Best Choreography for Wayne Cilento , Best Original Score for Pete Townshend, Best Scenic Design for John Arnone , and Best Lighting Design for Chris Parry . The musical closed June 17, 1995, after 27 previews and 899 regular performances.

The reimagined production played Chicago's Goodman Theatre in summer 2023, 30 years after its original Broadway bow. McAnuff directed at the Goodman, as well.

The Chicago cast was led by Ali Louis Bourzgui ( The Band's Visit ) as Tommy Walker, Adam Jacobs ( Aladdin ) as Captain Walker, and Alison Luff ( Waitress ) as Mrs. Walker, along with John Ambrosino ( Les Misérables ) as Uncle Ernie, Bobby Conte ( Company ) as Cousin Kevin, and Christina Sajous ( SpongeBob SquarePants ) as the Acid Queen (a role credited as "The Gypsy" in earlier iterations of the musical).

McAnuff has been eyeing a return for The Who's Tommy since at least 2019, when a Broadway revival was announced to hit the stage in 2021. Those plans never materialized due to the pandemic.

This was not the first attempt to adapt  Tommy  for the stage. An early stage adaptation of Tommy  premiered in 1971 in Seattle featuring Bette Midler as both the Acid Queen and Mrs. Walker. A screen version followed in 1975.

The forthcoming Broadway production is produced by Stephen Gabriel and Ira Pittelman .
