Sasan Gir Safari

We booked our safari trip and nearby hotel stay with Adler tours Rajkot. Arrived at hotel checked and then met our safari guide at 3pm for afternoon trip, later the better as it gets cooler and more chances of seeing wildlife. We were lucky and saw Lioness and 2 cubs + leopard by river, monkeys, deers and other wild life. Our guide and driver were very experienced and gave us all the time we need to stop and take photos. They were funny and informative about the area as well as different trees and faunas. we then had another safari next morning at 4am and saw more wild life. I would recommend this trip, you would need to stay overnight an advise. More

My wife and I stayed at the Asiatic Lion Lodge and our experience was amazing, we we’re traveling to our hometown from the USA. This property being eco friendly and blends in really well with the nature and surroundings. It has all the amenities and it is very clean that made our stay very comfortable and enjoyable. It borders with the Gir forest and we could hear lions roar at night (don’t worry the resort has high fences 😀). We sighted amazing wildlife including a pride, and cubs playing around. The head chef was very hospitable and made special dishes for us. Evenings were very pleasant with the camp fire and folk dance. Resort guests share their sightings to improve chances for sightings for the next batch. Very happy with the resort cleanliness, amenities, friendly hospitable staff, and a great location. We plan to go back with our family.

This place is a great get-away from the bustling Indian city life to enjoy nature and relax. The rooms are outstanding and the food is amazing. Staff is super friendly, helpful, and caters to the guests (we could even choose what's for dinner one night). Lots of games are available such as table tennis, badminton, chess. The safari tour in Gir National Park is worth the hassle to get entry permits, it was spectacular (lions, deer, antilope, owl, Nilgai, peacocks... and the landscape). A stroll in the nearby village Haripur provides exposure to the locals. Highly recommend this place.

Wonderful Experience Great Hospitality. Thank you for your hospitality. The great time spent with you have our hearts feeling overjoyed. Relaxing, comfy and enjoyable. Perfect example for family stay. Deep forest location for complete cutoff from crowd.

How guest reviews work.

Each review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.

An accommodation can reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.

Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Guidelines and Standards for Reviews

These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.

Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Sasan Gir Safari – Gir National Park Lion Safari, Gujarat, India

Sasan Gir Safari

Sasan Gir Safari is one of the most incredible of wildlife experiences. Coming face to face with the Asiatic Lion in the Gir National Park is thrilling.

Sasan Gir Lions

Sasan Gir Safari is one of the most incredible of wildlife experiences. Coming face to face with the Asiatic Lion in the Gir National Park, Gujarat India is thrilling.

“ Don’t make any body movements “! was the staccato command issued by our guide Siddi Bapu. The six of us in the open jeep froze in our skins. Coming straight towards us was a full-grown lion. Not a muscle in our bodies twitched, as we watched transfixed. The lion came nearer and nearer. As he drew nearer, the embodiment of leonine beauty and grace mesmerized us.

As he walked, each leg rising and falling on the ground with perfect precision in a fluid movement, the jungle itself serenaded him. It was like the hero making his entry in a Bollywood film. He walked to the background music of crows and other birds striking up a racket. Our Sasan Gir Safari in Gujarat , India was surely turning to be the stuff of dreams, we thought in elation.

Read on to know more about our encounter with the King of the Jungle on our Sasan Gir Lion Safari. This Sasan Gir Safari travel blog will also provide all the information needed to plan an exciting visit to the wildlife sanctuary including details about Gir National Park entry fees, Gir Safari booking, Gir Safari rates, Gir National Park timings , and much more.

Sasan Gir Safari – Cavorting With Lions

Sunrise at Sasan Gir

The winter season ensured that there was a nip in the air as we drove past some wheat fields bathed in golden morning light towards the Reception Centre of the Gir National Park to begin our Gir Jungle Safari. We were really optimistic about sighting the big cat in what is the last home of the Asiatic Lion.

There is nothing that can beat the pleasure of watching wildlife in their natural environment, the thrill is unique, be it meeting mountain gorillas face-to-face in Africa, or catching the glimpse of the Royal Bengal tiger at the Pench National Park, or visiting any of the Wildlife sanctuaries in India . As we drove into the Reception Centre we had only one thing on our minds, Lions!

Sasan Gir Safari

The Reception Centre is where we picked up our guide Siddhi Bapu.

Siddi Guide in Sasan Gir National Park

He belonged to the Siddi community that trace their ancestry to East Africa. In India, this community is found in regions of Gujarat, Karnataka , and Andhra Pradesh. Siddi Bapu informed us that his ancestors were from Nigeria. However, they have no connections with Nigeria now. They are fully integrated into the local culture and follow local customs.

Entry Gate to Gir National Park

Chatting with our guide we left the Sinh Sadan where the Reception Centre of Gir National Park is located and drove a few kilometres to reach the gate that led into the Gir National Park. We had been allotted Route No. 4 and the gate through which we entered the Park was common for routes 2, 4, 6, 9, 11, and 12. There is a different entry gate for the other routes. There is a total of 13 routes from which each Safari jeep gets allocated one.

Gir National Park

The sunlight pierced through the overhanging branches of the trees. We drove behind the brown cloud of dust blown by the jeep in front. Our guide regaled us with stories of Lions, he told us about the 2020 Lion census that was coming up. He also told us about celebrity visitors with whom he had guided during the Lion Safari.

“ Amitabh Bachhan had to do 3 Safaris before he could get a lion sighting,” said Siddi Bapu with a sardonic smile playing on his lips. He then went on to narrate an incident where a foreigner failed to get a Lion sighting even after camping there for a couple of weeks and going on numerous Lion Safaris!

Sasan Gir Safari

Was he subtly preparing us for disappointment? Were we destined to return empty-handed? Or would we get lucky on our first safari itself? These were the questions that hummed through our minds as we drove deeper into the teak wood laden Gir forest in search of Lions.

A movement in the bushes to our right caught our attention. They turned out to be a small herd of docile deer glancing shyly at us. Their serene composure was testimony to the absence of any Lion in the vicinity.

Sasan Gir National Park

We crossed a rivulet and the Guide informed us that the water was the home of crocodiles, though we did not spot any. Probably, they were spread languorously on the rocks behind basking in the sun.

Landscape of Gir National Park

A cute little bird drank water from a small stream as a couple of trees threw their shadows in the water. It was a picture of serenity. Everything seemed calm in the jungle. Things seemed to be in perfect harmony, the only jarring effect perhaps was our presence.

A sounder of wild boars made their way noiselessly in the shadows. We came upon a small clearing in the path. It was then that we saw the Lion.

Lions of Sasan Gir

In the distance, straight in front of us a Lion crossed the track and sat down beside it. There were two jeeps in front of us and we were still quite a distance from it.

Asiatic Lion of Gir National Park

The jeeps had stopped in their tracks. It was clear that now it was going to be a game of waiting.

Asiatic Lion

The lion sat gazing towards the path and was soon joined by another Lion who too crossed the path and sat next to the first lion.

We were delighted! We had been able to sight not one but two lions. But alas! they were quite far off. The two lions are male and are siblings informed our guide, they are 3.5 years old and control a wide territory, he added.

“Reverse”! on hearing this, our jeep started retreating in reverse, so did the other two jeeps. It became clear why this was done very soon. One of the lions stood up and started walking along the path, straight towards us.

This was when Siddi Bapu issued his stern command, “Don’t make any body movements”!

Lion sighting at Sasan Gir

The Lion sauntered towards the front jeeps, crossed them and slowly, with a typical, “devil may care”, attitude walked past us. It passed from the right side of our jeep and disappeared into the woods. Even as we looked in amazement at the leonine grace of the big cat retreating into the jungle, it dawned on us that there was another big cat behind us!

Lion sigting Gir National Park

As we turned back towards the point where the two Lions had been sitting, we saw the second Lion too following the footprints of his brother Lion, but with a difference.

The second Lon moved towards our left flank. He walked towards the trees and then took a slight turn and came straight towards our jeep. We could literally hear his breathing and are sure he would have heard the loud thumping of our hearts.

Lion Safari at Gir National Park

Our eyes met for a fraction of a second, and he was gone in a flash of golden glory. The mand on his lithe body glistening in the sunlight, his limbs moving in rhythmic perfection, a gait that would be the envy of any supermodel. He too walked away along the path, took a left turn and disappeared behind his brother into the woods.

There was absolute silence for a few moments, as we all soaked in and absorbed the intensity of what had just happened. And then all hell broke loose, excited chatter erupted in the jeep and the guide had to warn everyone to be silent as moved ahead into the Gir National Park.

But for most of us, our purpose for visiting the Gir National Park had been served. We were thrilled out of our wits.

Beautiful Landscapes of Gir National Park

Sasan Gir Safari

Yes, the sighting of wild animals is why most of us visit the forests and National Parks. But apart from this the sheer natural beauty that the landscapes offer is a treasure in itself. The Gir National Park too has a pristine and wild beauty that is so endearing.

In the summer months, the forest is dry, but after the rainy season, the streams and watering holes are full, the trees topped with a green cover, and the animals at their happiest. We visited during the winter months and loved the spectacle that unveiled before us as we embarked upon our Gir National Park Safari.

The teak forests presented a beautiful sight as we weaved through the narrow path that cut across the jungle. The terrain is made up of rocky hills of volcanic origin, and water natural water bodies. Water from seven rivers flows into the Gir forest area. These are the Hiran, Saraswati, Datardi, Shinghoda, Raval, Ghodavadi, and Macchundri. To conserve the waters of these rivers four dams have been constructed.

Panoramic view of Gir National Park

We drove across a beautiful stretch of road that ran parallel to the waters of the Hiran river, close to the Kamleshwar Dam. There is a tall observation tower here that offers spectacular and panoramic views of the Gir National Park.

Wow! What an incredible experience! Life is so funny, you sign up for something that could be dreamy, start to get concerned it won’t happen for you, then get the best experience possible. I’m very jealous and this is going on my list!

It was good that your guide set your expectations about the possibility of not seeing lions. We have had luck on our safaris. But have talked to others that were not so lucky. I do know that feeling you got when you saw a lion on the road you were travelling. So thrilling to watch them walk past. And hoping they ignore you! What a great experience you had.

Oh my goodness! Your description in the beginning was so vivid – I felt like I was right there with you. And you’re right – seeing wild animals in their natural habitat really is beautiful and mesmerizing. What a lovely memory – and such gorgeous creatures.

I can only imagine what this experience must have been like for you! How lucky to have had such a close encounter with the lions–and I’m so glad they kept walking past. They sure made their point, didn’t they? I hung on each word of this story, waiting to learn what would happen in the next moment. Thrilled to see the video of the whole experience, too. Thanks for sharing this exciting moment, as well as all of the other helpful tips about Gir National Park. I’m a huge wildlife fan, so I hope one day to see it for myself.

I’ve never been on a safari before, so for me this is very interesting information. Having such an up-close encounter with the lions must be exciting, but quite intimidating. I had no idea that you can go on a safari two-three times in a row and not see what you came to see. That guy must have been really unlucky. Gir National Park will definitely go up on my list of places to see in India.

A safari is one thing I really would love to do one day but I am just waiting for my two younger children to be a little bit older, but when we do, its going to be amazing. I would love to be as close to the lions like you were. Just to see them staring at you (peacefully I may add) is an experience which you will never forget and this is something I would like to add to my life experiences.

Your experience reminded me of the time many years back when I have faced a number of lions during our open jeep safari in South Africa. It’s quite an experience. Haven’t been to Gir but got a feel through your experience.

that was such an amazing experience. the only time I got to experience a ‘safari’ was when we visited the cebu safari adventure park. It’s not really in the wild. we got to see white lions but it would be amazing if we could see them in the wild too.

Great post!! I have never paid much attention to the wildlife in Gujarat and it seems pretty amazing. The lions in Gujarat seems a bit different than the African lions. I would love to give wildlife in Gujarat a try too.

Wow what an incredible experience and I am glad, unlike your tour guides previous client, you actually got to see lions! I’m yet to go on a safari or even to India so this was very interesting reading. Thanks for sharing your experience 🙂

Thanks for sharing such an informative post about Sasan Gir safari. After reading your entire page thing I liked most is adding an FAQ in the end. Thanks once again.

Gir National Park

The thought to meet and greet the mighty Lion is as fascinating as it is frightening. But, if you are eager to have such a fulfilling experience, then the Gir National Park is the destination for you.

Our Geography and General Knowledge books have introduced us to this famous wildlife sanctuary, the Gir National Park which is located in Gujarat. This protected forest is also popular as SasanGir and is located near Somnath, Junagadh, Amreli, and especially the TalalaGir. In 1965, the Gir Forest National Park was set up and since then it has been the refuge for Mama(201), Papa(109l), and Baby lions (213). The National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary has an area of 1412 km2 combined and has been attracting people since its inception.

To gather the best memories, you need to visit the Gir Forest during December to March, as it remains closed every year for the set period of June 16- October 15. However, if you are a fan of photography and can dread the hotness of Gujarat, then you will be impressed with April- May scenes. To make the most of the journey, Gir Safari Booking will be the best idea.

History of Gir National Park

When we were still under the British Rule, then the colonized princes used to invite colonizers for the game of hunt. This led to a steady decline in the count of the Asiatic lion and only a dozen or so were left cornered in the Gir Forest. This was brought to the notice of Junagarh's Nawab as this hunting ground belonged to him. To preserve the remaining precious Asiatic Lion, he established the Gir National Park which also houses various other plants and animals.

The bio-diverse importance of this place is immense and the NGOs, the wildlife activists, and the forest department of Government are trying their utmost to protectthe Gir Forest National Park.

The Ultimate Gir Safari Booking Debate: Bus or Jeep?

There is absolutely no doubt about the fact that the Gir Forest National Park has a lot to offer. Keeping in mind the requirements of the inhabitants of the Gir Forest, theDevalia safari was created. Devalia is an interpretation of the denser forest which gives to you all the main components of the main theme but in a restricted zone.

On the other hand, the Devalia safari is about a bus-ride through the less-dense part of the GirNational Park which might not be very adventurous yet guarantees the sightings of the animals. This Safari is on throughout the day and can introduce you with birds, reptiles, herbivorous other than the lions.

As per the Gir National Park Information, the Gir Jungle Trail is all about the raw beauty of the forest and its beautiful beats. This safari is mostly done using the jeep and gypsies that take you through the dusty alleys of the jungle where the flora and fauna play peek-a-boo with you. The timings of this Gir Safari Booking have been shared previously and if you are lucky, you might have your moment with the maned Asiatic beast. Even if you don't see the lion still the journey and the experience in itself is intriguing.

Although you can pre-book the SasanGir Safari, yet the permits are limited and based on a first-come-first-serve basis. To end the debate, it is recommended to try both the safaris to explore Gir National Park.

Gir National Park Information about Photography:

Indeedthe Gir National Park with its countless residents is like a paradise for the photographers. The clickers will not be able to rest their fingers as if you wink and be lazy you might miss a subject of yours! As mentioned, the April-May slot is the best for all the snappers but the heat can play a spoilsport at that time. So diverse are the components of this place that it will never disappoint a photographer.

Also, if you are not a professional photographer but would like to have one clicked as a memory, the charge for that is 200 INR for each photo. At the time of Gir Safari Booking, the camera charges are included in the fee.

Gir National Park: Geo-morphology and Topography:

It is always a good idea to have a basic knowledge of the place you are thinking to visit. The area of the Gir Forest mainly consists of plateaus, valleys, and moderate hills, which means you will not have a boring plain land. The undulations offer the dense forest the required oomph. As it is within the belt of Deccan Trap, so Basalt and Dolomite are the predominant rock types. You will also find metamorphic schist as well as limestone and sandstone. These varied rocks bring diversity to the soil texture as well and so you find loamy, sandy, black cotton soil throughout the GirNational Park. Birds at Gir forest

Obviously, looking for the lions always the first priorities of visitor, but should not ignore other features of Gir forest. And our guide had drawn our attention towards these beautiful pair of Owls.

You are not supposed to speak louder in the forest, keep that in mind. Gir forest accommodate several kind of animals like leopards, wild boars, monitor lizard, Chital, Blue bull etc.

Gir forest have several species of plants and trees, almost 80% of forest is covered with Sagwan trees. Wood of Sagwan tree is quite costly in market, so protecting these forest from illegal cutting of tree is also a challenge.

I was lucky enough that I could saw the two lions, they were not in hurry may be resting after morning patrolling. I was in the time slot of 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM of Jungle trail, though chance of seeing lion is higher in the first slot ( 6 AM to 9 AM).

Gir National Park And Wildlife Sanctuary, Also Known As Sasan Gir, And Wildlife Sanctuary Near Talala Gir In Gujarat, India. It's Located 43 Km North- East Of Somnath, 65 Km South- East Of Junagadh And 60 Km South- West Of Amreli. It Was Established In 1965 In The Former Nawab Of Junagarh's Private Stalking Area, With A Total Area Of,412 Km2, Of Which 258 Km2 Is Completely Defended As A Public Demesne And,153 Km2 As Wildlife Sanctuary. In 1900 It Was Estimated That The Population Was As Low As 100, And The Asiatic Captain Was Declared A Defended Species. A Census In 1936 Recorded 289 Creatures. The First Ultramodern- Day Count Of Lions Was Done By Mark Alexander Wynter- Blyth, The Star Of Rajkumar College, Rajkot Andr.S. Dharma kumar sinh ji Eventually Between 1948 And 1963, And A Farther Check, In 1968, Recorded That Since 1936 Figures Had Fallen To 162.

Gir National Park

At The End Of The 19th Century, Only About A Dozen Asiatic Lions Were Left In India, All Of Them In The Gir Forest, Which Was Part Of The Nawab Of Junagarh's Private Stalking Grounds. British Viceroys Brought The Drastic Decline Of The Lion Population In Gir To The Attention Of The Nawab Of Junagadh, Who Established The Sanctuary. Moment, It's The Only Area In Asia Where Asiatic Lions Do And Is Considered One Of The Most Important Defended Areas In Asia Because Of Its Biodiversity. The Gir Ecosystem With Its Different Flora And Fauna Is Defended As A Result Of The Sweats Of The Government Forest Department, Wildlife Activists And Ngos. It's Now Considered The Jewel Of Gujarat's Ecological Coffers. The Asiatic Captain's Niche Is Dry Drop Land And Open Evanescent Forest. The Captain Population Increased From 411 Individualities In 2010 To 523 In 2015, And All Of Them Live In Or Around Gir National Park.

It's Part Of The Khathiar- Gir Dry Deciduous Forests Ecoregion. Gir National Park Is Closed From 16 June To 15 October Every Time. The Stylish Time To Visit It's Between December And March. Although It's Veritably Hot In April And May, These Are The Stylish Months For Wildlife Viewing And Photography. In The 19th Century, The Leader Of Indian Kingly Countries Used To Invite The British Pioneers For Hunting Peregrinations

Indeed Though The Gir Forest Is Well Defended, There Are Cases Of Asiatic Lions Being Coddled. They've Also Been Poisoned In Retribution For Attacking Beast. Some Of The Other Pitfalls Include Cataracts, Fires And The Possibility Of Pandemics And Natural Disasters. Gir Nevertheless Remains The Most Promising Long Term Save For Them.

During A Prolonged Failure From 1899 To 1901, Lions Attacked Beast And People Beyond The Gir Forest. After 1904, The Leader Of Junagadh Compensated Beast Losses. Moment, The Lions In Gir National Park Hardly Attack People.

Nestled in the western Indian state of Gujarat, Gir National Park encounters a semi-arid tropical climate. The climate within Gir National Park is distinguished by scorching and arid summers, prevailing from March to June, with temperatures soaring beyond 40°C (104°F). Throughout this period, the park's foliage undergoes desiccation, underscoring the significance of water sources as crucial hubs for the resident wildlife. With the advent of the monsoon season in July, lasting until September, a respite unfolds in the guise of substantial rainfall, breathing life back into the landscape and replenishing the park's water reservoirs. The subsequent months, spanning from October to February, post-monsoon, emerge as the opportune window for exploration. During this time, the climate adopts a pleasant demeanor, with temperatures ranging between 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F). This season proves to be particularly favorable for wildlife aficionados and photographers alike, as the park dons a lush green attire, and the moderate temperatures enhance the likelihood of encountering wildlife in a more frequent and comfortable manner.

Gir Forest National Park Gujarat

Nestled in the vibrant state of Gujarat, India, the Gir Forest National Park stands as a testament to the conservation of the Asiatic lion, making it a crown jewel in the world of wildlife sanctuaries. History and Conservation Efforts at Gir

The history of Gir Forest National Park dates back to the early 20th century when the Nawab of Junagadh took the initiative to protect the dwindling lion population. Over the years, concerted conservation efforts have been put in place, including the establishment of the Gir Forest Reserve in 1965. Today, the park is a thriving ecosystem thanks to the relentless conservation work and strict protection measures enforced by The Earth Safari, aligning with its commitment to sustainable tourism and wildlife preservation.

Biodiversity of Gir Forest National Park:

Asiatic Lions: The Asiatic lion, scientifically known as Panthera leo persica, stands as a symbol of regality and resilience. Endemic to the Gir Forest National Park in Gujarat, India, this magnificent big cat is a distinct subspecies surviving against the odds. With a robust physique, a notable fold of skin along the belly, and a less prominent mane than its African counterpart, the Asiatic lion exudes a unique charm. Once on the brink of extinction, concerted conservation efforts have helped revive their population. The lions of Gir are a testament to the successful preservation of a species, offering a captivating glimpse into the intricate balance of nature within the arid landscapes they call home. Witnessing the Asiatic lion in Gir Forest Lion Safari is not merely a safari experience but a connection with the heritage of wildlife conservation in India, embodying the spirit of coexistence between humans and nature.

Mammals: In addition to the Asiatic lion, Gir houses a thriving population of Indian leopards, Indian cobras, jungle cats, striped hyenas, and various deer species such as sambar, chital, and nilgai. The diverse mammalian fauna enhances the overall safari experience.

Birds: Gir is a haven for bird enthusiasts, boasting over 300 avian species. Raptors like the critically endangered white-backed vulture, the long-billed vulture, and the Indian vulture can be spotted, along with a variety of eagles, owls, and vibrant resident and migratory bird species.

Reptiles: The park is also home to a diverse reptilian population, including marsh crocodiles, monitor lizards, and various snake species. The abundance of water bodies in the park contributes to the thriving reptile community.

Flora: The Gir Forest is characterized by a mix of dry deciduous and tropical thorn forests, harboring a wide array of plant species. Teak, flame of the forest, dhak, and acacia trees dominate the landscape, providing both food and shelter for the diverse wildlife.

Types of Safaris in Gir Forest National Park

Bird Watching Safari: Special small group safaris led by expert birding guides to view the nearly 300 bird species found inside Gir including endemics. Different routes used.

Best Time to Visit Gir for Safari

The best time to visit Gir National Park for a safari, particularly to witness the majestic Asiatic lions, is during the months of December to April. This period constitutes the dry season when the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot wildlife. The weather is relatively pleasant during these months, with temperatures ranging from cool to moderately warm.

December to April also marks the mating season for lions, increasing the chances of observing interesting behaviors and interactions among these big cats. Moreover, this time frame aligns with the park's opening season, as Gir National Park is closed during the monsoon season from June to October.

It's essential to note that the availability of water sources during the dry season concentrates wildlife around these areas, further enhancing the safari experience. For enthusiasts seeking optimal wildlife viewing conditions, planning a visit to Gir National Park during these months would be most rewarding.

My favorite hotel

Nikunj Sheth

At gir lion safari camp, we have enjoyed a lot swimming pool, game zone and the wonderful thing is food, the food is so delicious i ever like to go there and eat. My opinion or suggestions are that first make a good road leading to safari camp and put signage of Gir Lion Safari Camp, make arrangements for fire camp so the other guest have contact each other and the last and worst thing that your Gir Lion Safari Camp charges are very high but providing only two bottles of bisleri water, at-least it shoud be unlimited or if u feel that someone is misused it then give six or seven bottle. The rest thing cleaning safety hygiene are too good

Overall a very good stay

Devang Umeshkumar Ganatra

Resort is very clean. Overall its a very good place to stay in Gir. A car is must if you want to travel outside of resort, otherwise you cannot step outside at night. Luxury tents are exactly same as shown in pictures. Only thing is that it does not have room heater so in winter it's very cold inside. Resort doesn't have many activity options, it has only a game room which has few options. For me, activities doesn't matter as I could spend quality time with my family. Food quality was average compare to price being charged. They charged per day per person for all 3 meals, but quality was average.

Wonderful stay at gir lion safari camp

subhransu mohanty

We went in april 2023 to sasan gir and chose to stay at gir lion safari camp. The resort is good but the restaurant timings are little odd and don’t expect food to be served in 10 in 15 minutes. The food takes 30-40 min to get served and have very few options. The road to resort location is really bad and expect some bumpy rides to the resort. The rooms are neat and clean and kids can enjoy the pool, carrom, etc. Overall a good play to stay for 2 nights and enjoy safari. Please tell them to book the gypsy for you for the safari and they will do it.

A pleasant stay at Gir Lion Safari Camp

pranay dangi

The Gir Lion Safari Camp is located 3 kilometers from the Sasan village from where jeep safari are conducted. The route to resort from highway is a rough patch of 1 kilometer but it located among the nature just near to the river giving it a forest stay feel. The tents are beautifully from inside and gives you a feel of staying in mango tree farm. The reception and staff was very helpful and guided us through the Safari process. Breakfast was tasty but could have more options. Overall a pleasant stay with complete vibes of Sasan Gir.

Gir Safari Camp

shesadri parthasarathy

Beautiful property with good quality accommodation. The access to the property is bad as there is no proper road access. The mud road from the main road is only access to this property which gets little scary during dark. Otherwise, food is decent and stay will be smooth with no issues with power supply. Internet won't work inside the cottage or tent. Wi-Fi is very weak considering the bandwidth they have for 20 odd property ,but peaceful without modern technologies make you connect with your closer ones.

Excellent Stay

Bhumika Seth

The place is quite nice. It is approx 2kms inside the main market which almost feels like you’re living in a jungle. I stayed in the luxury cottage, the interior of the room was aesthetically pleasing and cosy. The food was decent too. On the outside of the property you get to see crocodiles, yes, no kidding, I saw 3 crocodiles and then there is a trail you can follow to see more of them. My overall experience was great and if you visit Gir, I would highly recommend this place. 🫰

Excellent hotel in Camp style

It was our first visit to Sasan Gir, we booked Gir Lion Safari Camp Gir Lion Safari Camp on MakeMyTrip and were little apprehensive however once we reached the Gir Lion Safari Camp we like every bit of it- the location, the exterior of the rooms, inside the room interior and washroom. I want all of this the Gir Lion Safari Camp. Staff very cordial and supporting. We will recommend our friends and family to book the Gir Lion Safari Camp whenever they are visiting Sasan Gir.

Beautiful stay

Shaily Gupta

This camp is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places i have stayed at. The road to reach the camp is slightly kuchha road (approx 1. 5 km) but the camp makes up for all that hassle. The food is good and staff is prompt. We stayed in the luxury tent, you have the option of cottages as well. The camp organises a bonfire and a tribal dance performance for evening entertainment. I thoroughly enjoyed roaming amid-st nature and sooo many trees.

Awesome place

Awesome place with nature food is good but price is slightly high. Staff is highly co'operative.

Last time I marked my stay as excellent and this time can be termed as very good. Most of staff appeared to be new, untrained and unorganized. Rest all, the proper is a must go for families and couples. Wishing management team good luck and fortune.

Lion Safari at Gir Forest – Sasan Gir National Park

The previous night was quite cold and the morning was cold too. The previous days were hectic but thankfully, we did not have a lot of traveling around to do on this day. This day’s plan was a bit light – only an afternoon Lion safari at Gir forest. So we started our day in a leisurely fashion.

This article is in continuation with a previous one and a part of my Gujarat road trip log. To previous about our journey so far from Mumbai, please click on the links below.

The journey so Far:

  • Mumbai to Champaner by Road
  • Shaher ki Masjid & Jami Masjid – Champaner
  • Pavagadh Hills & Kalika Mata Temple
  • Rani ki Vav & Sahastralinga Talav
  • Modhera Sun Temple
  • Khambhalida Caves

Our safari was pre-booked. While planning the trip, I read that the authorities used to allow self-drive in the Gir forest. However, when I checked with the Club Mahindra people about this, they clearly said that safaris have to be undertaken by a government-registered vehicle and guide.

Further, they also advised us to book the safari online. The reason was that there was a cap on the number of safari vehicles that can enter in any particular safari timing and given that it was holiday time, a huge rush was expected and spot booking might not be available. Their apprehension was correct. We did the right thing by booking the safari online well in advance.

Quick Navigation

Gir Forest Safari Timings

In Gir forest, two safaris used to take place in the morning and one safari in the afternoon. The morning safaris’ timings were 6.45 am and 8.30 am. The afternoon safari’s timing was 3 pm.

In the summer months, the first safari of the morning starts at 6.00 am instead of 6.45 am and the afternoon safari starts at 4 pm instead of 3 pm. The duration of each safari was supposed to be 3 hours.

Gir Forest Safari Price

The permit charge per safari is Rs. 1000 (up to 6 people). One gypsy used to be allocated per permit. The fees for the driver and the guide were not included in the permit charge. Those were supposed to be paid on the spot in cash.

Though the timing of our safari was 3 pm, we started at noon. The idea was to go to Sasan Gir first to figure out what were the formalities for safari and then to have lunch outside. So, we kept some buffer time. It was a sunny and windy day.

sasan gir

Starting from the resort, we first drove for 4 km on the Haripur-Bhalchhel road to come back to the Junagadh-Mendarda-Sasan Gir where we left it yesterday.

sinh sadan

There we took a right turn towards Sasan Gir. After driving around 5 kilometers, we reached Sasan Gir and stopped our vehicle in front of Sinh Sadan.

There some volunteers, who were managing traffic, approached us and asked whether we had the online permit. After getting an affirmative answer, they told us that we would be required to go inside Sinh Sadan but the registration process used to start at 2 pm, one hour before the scheduled commencement time of the safari.

So, we had enough time in our hands to have our lunch. We had noticed a market and few restaurants on both sides of the road, just before the Sinh Sadan. But based on the rating on Trip Advisor, we had already decided to go to a restaurant named ‘Swadesh Restaurant’ which was another 6-7 km drive from Sasan Gir.

While going to ‘Swadesh Restaurant’, after 1-1.5 km from Sinh Sadan, we saw an entry gate for the jungle and few vehicles standing there. We guessed that this gate was the entry point for the safari but were wondering what the private vehicles were doing there given that no self-drive safari was allowed.

However, we decided to keep that thought aside for the time being and direct our attention towards locating the ‘Swadesh Restaurant’.

We did not find it difficult to locate ‘Swadesh Restaurant’ but then realized that it was not a stand-alone restaurant. It was also a part of a resort and outside guests were not allowed because of Covid-19 related restrictions.

So, we came back to Sasan Gir and asked the same set of locals with whom we interacted earlier about a decent place of eating. They told us to go to Rajwadi Dining Hall which was a few hundred meters from Sinh Sadan, on the main road itself.

Rajwadi Dining Hall

Accordingly, we went there and parked our car. We noticed a non-vegetarian restaurant just beside that Rajwadi Dining Hall and got tempted for few moments to enter there. But then, we decided to go to Rajwadi Dining Hall only. The reason was that since non-vegetarian food was not in great circulation in that area, it might be stale.

Rajwadi Dining Hall was a medium-sized restaurant with a 30-40 seating capacity, I guess. It was neat and clean. When we entered there, it was almost empty. All of a sudden, it got filled up. We ordered for ‘Kathiyawadi Thali’.

First, they brought six types of pickles/chatni. That was followed by four varieties of dal/sabzi. Chawl, Roti, Papad, and Chas came along with the same. The quantity was unlimited. The taste was spicy. I and my daughter enjoyed the food. That was exactly not the case with my wife. The rate per thali was Rs. 180/-.

We came back to Sinh Sadan around 2 pm. There was no parking place available inside Sinh Sadan. So we parked our car at the side of an internal road. By that time, a queue had been already formed inside Sinh Sadan in front of the designated center.

We also stood in the line. Some people in the queue did not have confirmed permits. They were told to wait. If someone having a confirmed permit did not turn up then only they would be allocated a vehicle.

Our time came in due course. We were handed over to a guide. He took us to another counter. There we paid Rs. 2100/- in cash – Rs. 1500/- for the vehicle and Rs. 600/- for the guide. The guide then told us to come back to the same place at 3 pm. We had good 30 minutes to kill.

Kankai Mata Temple

So we came out and drove our vehicle towards the jungle entry gate which we notice earlier while going to the Swadesh restaurant. There were some guards. We asked them whether a self-drive jungle safari was allowed. Their answer was ‘no’.

Then we enquired them about the few private vehicles which we saw a couple of hours back in front of the gate. The guards informed them that those vehicles were going to the Kankai Mata temple.

Through conversation what transpired was that inside the jungle, there was a temple of Kankai Mata. The distance of the temple from that entry gate was around 25 kilometers.

Though nobody is allowed to take his/her vehicle for the jungle safari and were required to mandatorily use the vehicle and guard provided by the forest department, people are allowed to go to the Kankai Mata temple on their own.

Gir Forest Camping

So, the apparent intrigue became clear. Then we came back to Sinh Sadan again and parked the vehicle at the same place where it was parked earlier. Then we noticed another big entry gate just beside the Sinh Sadan.

We enquired with the locals about that. They told that it was the entry gate for the camping ground. My family was never interested in camping not only at Gir but also anywhere. So, I did not enquire further about this and entered Sinh Sadan for the second time for the day.

camping ground

Our safari started at sharp 3 pm. Our driver was Vijay and the guide was Jignesh. The vehicle was a Maruti Gypsy. The driver and the guide sat in the first row. My wife and daughter sat on the second row. I became the backbencher.

Lion Safari at Gir Forest

We came out from the Sinh Sadan and entered the jungle from the same gate after completing some registration formality which was done by Jignesh.

Immediately after crossing the gate, we took a sharp right turn. That was route no. 8 which was allocated to us. A bumpy and dusty ride started through ‘not so thick’ vegetation.

Lion Safari at Gir Forest

About Gir Forest National Park

Gir National Park is the only dwelling place of an endangered Asiatic lion other than Africa. It was established on 18th September 1965 and is spread on 1413 square Kilometres of land. Its altitude varies from 150 to 530 meters above mean sea level.

The average daytime temperature in summer is 45 degrees centigrade. Winters are moderately cool and pleasant. The average rainfall is 100 mm in the western part of Gir and 650 mm in the eastern region of Gir. The park remains closed from 15th June to mid-October every year.

The main attraction of Gir National Park is Asiatic Lion. As per the 2011 census, there are 411 lions there – 97 male, 162 female, and 152 cubs. Besides, it is also home to thousands of aerial and terrestrial animals.

Over 606 varieties of plants, 36 species of mammals, over 2000 genus of Insects, and approximately 300 sorts of birds dwell in Gir forest.

After a 30-35 minutes’ drive, we spotted the first wildlife of the safari – several chitals.

Chital

The vernacular name ‘chital’ comes from cītal, derived from the Sanskrit word citrala, meaning ‘variegated’ or ‘spotted’. The name of the cheetah has a similar origin. Variations of ‘chital’ include ‘cheetal’ and ‘cheetul’.

Other common names for the chital are Indian spotted deer (or simply the spotted deer) and axis deer.

lion safari at gir forest

The chital is a moderately sized deer. Males reach nearly 90 cm (35 in) and females 70 cm (28 in) at the shoulder; the head-and-body length is around 1.7 m (5.6 ft).

While immature males weigh 30–75 kg (66–165 lb), the lighter females weigh 25–45 kg (55–99 lb). Mature males can weigh up to 98 to 110 kg (216 to 243 lb). The tail, 20 cm (7.9 in) long, is marked by a dark stripe that stretches along its length.

The upper parts are golden to rufous, completely covered in white spots. The abdomen, rump, throat, insides of legs, ears, and tail are all white. A conspicuous black stripe runs along the spine (backbone).

After ten minutes, we spotted a couple of sambars.

lion safari at gir forest

The sambar (Rusa unicolor) is a large deer native to the Indian subcontinent, South China, and Southeast Asia. The appearance and the size of the sambar vary widely across its range.

In general, they attain a height of 102 to 160 cm (40 to 63 in) at the shoulder and may weigh as much as 546 kg (1,204 lb), though more typically 100 to 350 kg (220 to 770 lb). Head and body length varies from 1.62 to 2.7 m (5.3 to 8.9 ft), with a 22 to 35 cm (8.7 to 13.8 in) tail.

The large, rugged antlers are typically rusine, the brow tines being simple and the beams forked at the tip, so they have only three tines. The antlers are typically up to 110 cm (43 in) long in fully adult individuals. As with most deer, only the males have antlers.

lion safari at gir forest

The shaggy coat can be from yellowish-brown to dark grey in color, and while it is usually uniform in color, some subspecies have chestnut marks on the rump and underparts.

Sambar also has a small but dense mane, which tends to be more prominent in males. The tail is relatively long for deer and is generally black above with a whitish underside.

Hiran River

Our drive through the rugged terrain filled with mixed deciduous trees continued in search of the star attraction. In course of doing that, we crossed narrow and shallow water streams few times. Those water streams were part of the Hiran river system.

lion safari at gir forest

Hiran River’s source is near the Sasa hills in Gir forest. Its drainage basin has a maximum length of 40 km (25 mi). The total catchment area of the basin is 518 km (322 mi).

Its major tributaries are the Saraswati River and Ambakhoi stream, and many other unknown branches make this river almost complete near Talala town. It supports a variety of wildlife ecological systems and human settlements.

Kamleshwar Dam, often known as Hiran-1 and Umrethi Dam, are some of the major projects on the river. As Hiran flows from the western part of Gir forest, it is a major source of water for the forest’s ecology and biodiversity for the whole year.

Kamleshwar Dam

We reached Kamleshwar dam around 4.15 pm.

Kamleshwar Dam

The Kamleshwar Dam, officially known as the “Hiran-I Dam”, is a rock-fill embankment dam. Measuring 764 ha (7,640,000 m2), the dam was completed in 1959 for irrigation purposes. The reservoir created by the dam is known for its populations of birds and mugger crocodiles.

The Kamleshwar Dam was the mid-way stoppage for the Gir Safari. There were toilets for the tourist, There was a watchtower too. While most of the tourists thronged there, we were busy with some family photography.

After spending around 25 minutes there, we started our return journey. We crossed few water streams again, saw some more deer but the Asiatic Lion continued to remain evasive. After 30-35 minutes of return drive, we finally hit the jackpot.

A lion was having its lunch a few hundred meters away from the driving trail. So, there was a huge queue on that part of the driving trail. Each vehicle was passing slowly so the tourist can take few clicks. The lion was completely oblivious about the presence of so many tourist vehicles and was relishing its hunt.

Lion Safari at Gir Forest

Our safari came to the end around 5.45 pm. After giving some tips to the guide as well as the driver, we took our vehicle and came back to Rajwadi Dining Hall.

The idea was to pick up something for dinner. But its evening opening time was 7 pm. That meant, we were required to wait for almost an hour. We were in no mood to do that so immediately started for Club Mahindra, Sasan Gir.

  • Journey Ahead: Sasan Gir to Somnath Temple

By the time we reached Club Mahindra, Sasan Gir, the day was more or less over.

I hope the travelogue, pictures, and information on Lion Safar at Gir forest were of help. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in the comments section below or at our Community Forum , and I will be happy to answer.

The Government notified the large geographical extent of Sasan Gir as wildlife sanctuary on 18th September, 1965 in order to conserve the Asiatic Lion. It covers total area of 1412 square kilometers of which 258 Km forms the core area of the National Park. Indiscriminate hunting by the people of Junagarh led to their decrease in population drastically, while they were completely wiped out from the other parts of Asia. It was the kind effort of Nawabs of Junagarh who protected the queen royalty in his own private hunting grounds. Later in due course of time Department of Forest Officials came forward to protect the world’s most threatened species. From a population of approximately 20 lions in 1913, they have risen to a comfortable 523 according to 2015 census. There are 106 male, 201 female and 213 sub-adult lions in the wilderness of these four districts.

How To Reach Gir National Park Gir

National Park attracts large number of tourists to witness the Asiatic lion, as this is the sole place all across the world where these creatures are presently found. Once extinct, numbers have been recovered owing to the conservation efforts. The Sanctuary is open for tourism from 16th October to 15th June every year.

Junagadh is perhaps the best approach to the park. The railway station in Junagadh receives trains from different cities like Ahmedabad and Rajkot and other major cities. Then, from here it takes approximately one and half hour to reach Sasan Gir National Park.

From Rajkot-On reaching Rajkot Railway Station or Airport you can take a cab or bus and to reach a Limda chowk. There are a number of privately operated that go to Junagadh at frequent intervals. Junagadh is nearly 105 Kms from the city Rajkot and it takes nearly 2 and a half to 3 hours to cover the distance. From this point you have two options. First one is either you take a bus from gate number 11or 12 to Sasan Gir or travel by taxi that is accessible bang opposite the taxi stand. The taxi will take nearly one and half an hour and will charge reasonably and will drop you to Sasan Gir.

From Somnath to Gir National Park : Road Distance or the driving distance from the Gir National Park to Somnath is approximately 50 Kms and it takes nearly 1 hour to cover this distance. GSRTC buses and quite a few private buses ply between both the cities and take you directly to Sasan Gir Forest.

Nearby places or cities

It is interesting to know that very few places in Gujarat have the diversity that Junagadh offers. Situated at the foothills of the Girnar range, Junagadh got its name because of Uparkot, a fort built by ChandraGupta Maurya during the 320 BC. “Old Fort” as the word Junagadh means, the fort is the main centre of the city.

Tourist Places In and Around Junagadh

Navghan Kuvo and Adi-kadi Vav are a pair of ancient step wells that were not built, but cut out of solid rock, delved 170 feet into the heart of solid rock to find water at the bottom. The Gir National Park famous for the last Asiatic Lions is the most popular reserve forest of the entire Gujarat.

History of Junagarh

Junagadh is quite ancient, as it existed during the reigns of Chandra Gupta Maurya and King Ashoka. Inscriptions dating back to the era of the Saka ruler - Mahakshatrap Rudradaman I - can also be found. During Mohammad Bahadur Khanji I, the present city of Junagadh was founded.

Girnar is one of the most important and holy pilgrimage centres of both Hindus and Jains. Girnar is a range of mountains usually known as the Girnar Hills. Girnar has been mentioned in the Vedas and also in the scriptures from the Indus Valley Civilization proving that it has always been respected as a sacred place.

The Hindu and Jain Temples

There are five peaks in the Girnar range that have a collection of many Hindu and Jain Temples. Pilgrims need to climb thousands and thousands of steps in order to reach these temples. Amongst the Jain Temples are the Tirthankara Neminath temple, Mallinath Temple, Rishabhdev Temple and the Parshwanath Temple. The Hindu temples are the Bhavnath Mahadev Temple, the Dattatreya Temple, the Amba Mata Temple, the Kalika Temple, the Ramchandra Temple, the Jatashankar Mahadev Temple, and the Gaumukhi Ganga Temple and there is also a stream called the Hanuman Dhara on the Western side of the Girnar hills.

In 1540 A.D. Jam Raval founded the city of Jamnagar as the capital of the Princely State of Nawanagar. The city was established around the Ranmal Lake and at the confluence of the rivers Rangmati and Nagmati. The city was later refurbished by Maharaja Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji in the 1920s and later came to be known as Jamnagar or “the city of Jams”. The word 'Jam' means 'king' and this area was ruled by the Jadeja Rajput rulers, who were thought to be the descendants of Krishna’s Yadava clan. Lord Krishna had relocated the Yadavas from Mathura to establish his kingdom in Dwarka which falls under the Jamnagar district.

The Foundation stone of Jamnagar

Jam Lakaji, father of Jam Rawal was awarded twelve villages by Bahadur Shah. Later, Jam Rawal moved to Kathiawar and founded the city of Nawanagar (the new town). Under the rule of Jam Vibhaji in 1852, the city progressed due to the establishment of schools, hospitals, and the railway line to Rajkot.
