Mitzpe Ramon Travel Guide (Updated 2024)

israel desert tours mitzpe ramon

Mitzpe Ramon is a small town on the edge of the magnificent Ramon Crater. It’s in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the vast desert and the quiet. Yes, Mitzpe Ramon is very quiet. The people who live here aren’t hurrying anywhere, and there are no honking cars or traffic jams. People come here to practice yoga, learn juggling, do stargazing, and immerse in spiritual activities. Because Mitzpe Ramon is the perfect place to take a break from everyday worries, breathe deeply, and just enjoy life. It’s also a great place for hiking in the desert – and Ramon Crater!

Keep in mind that you’ll probably need a car for your visit, as public transportation isn’t good in this area of Israel.

This travel guide to Mitzpe Ramon includes everything you need for a perfect visit to this desert retreat. And I’m updating it all the time. So, if you plan to visit Mitzpe Ramon soon, check it out.

5 top things to see and do in mitzpe ramon, 1. hike in ramon crater.

Mitzpe Ramon’s biggest attraction is the Ramon Crater, officially known as Makhtesh Ramon . It’s one of Israel’s greatest natural wonders, the biggest erosion cirque in the world! It was formed over millions of years by the power of water and climatical forces. Today, it is in the shape of a huge heart, 40 kilometers long and 2-10 kilometers wide. It’s full of ancient surfaces, beautiful rock formations, and stunning colors.

Many people drive into the crater and stop at several popular points, like HaMinsara, the Ammonites Wall , and the Colored Sands. Those places don’t require much walking, because you can get the car very close to the point of interest.

But, if you want to hike through the beautiful landscapes of the Makhtesh, that’s also possible. There are many hiking trails in the Makhtesh. Still, you will probably need a car to get to the trail heads. Here are some trails I’ve done in Ramon Crater and can recommend:

2. Go stargazing

Mitzpe Ramon is the perfect base for stargazing. In 2017, Ramon Crater was named the first international Dark Sky Park in the Mideast. I haven’t yet joined a stargazing tour in Ramon Crater, but I know many people who did it and enjoyed every minute. And it makes sense, because the sky here is very dark and there are almost no lights in the surroundings, what makes a perfect setting to view stars.

Every year, from 17 July to 24 August, there’s also a beautiful meteor shower, which you can view very easily from Mitzpe Ramon. Star-lovers from all around Israel come to Mitzpe Ramon and enjoy the amazing view. So, if you happen to be in Israel during the meteor shower, make your way here. Just book your stay enough time in advance, because it will probably be packed!

3. Go camping in the crater

Have you ever camped in the desert? It’s an amazing experience. Everything is quiet, and in the morning, you wake up to a stunning yellowish landscape. In Ramon Crater, you have the chance to camp in Israel’s friendly desert and enjoy a night full of stars and quiet.

Though, please keep in mind that you cannot set up a tent anywhere you want. Ramon Crater is a nature reserve, so camping is permitted only in designated places. That’s because we want to minimize our interactions with the crater’s wildlife and give the animals the space they need.

So, where are some good places to set up a tent in Ramon Crater? There are several free camping sites. These sites are “sign sites,” that have no facilities at all. They are perfect for those who are okay with experiencing the desert without the comfort of organized restrooms and showers. I’ve camped in Nahal Gvanim Camping Site , and it was great. It’s a popular camping site for groups, and there are even ecological toilets over there (but they’re not always open). Other than the toilets, there’s nothing there. Just a large, flat space. Three more free campsites in the crater are Nekarot West Camping Site , Geves Pnimi Camping Site , and Mount Ardon Camping Site . I haven’t stayed in any of them, but they seem alright.

If you prefer an organized camping site with lights, showers, and a restroom, you can stay at one of the paid campsites in the crater. I stayed at Be’erot Campground , a campsite run by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority. It was a very pleasant stay! There’s also the Selina Glamping Site with luxurious tents.

4. View the amazing sunrise

Mitzpe Ramon is one of the best spots to view the sunrise in Israel. Before the sun rises, Makhtesh Ramon is completely dark. Then, the sun starts rising above the crater and wakes up the crater’s beautiful colors. It’s remarkable! If you’re not morning people, you can also enjoy the stunning sky near sunset.

I viewed the sunrise from the Barak and Amichai Viewpoint on road number 40, on the way into the crater. It’s a good viewpoint, but if there are lots of people, you might not be able to find a place to stop there. So, I would recommend viewing the sunrise from the Albert Promenade . You can park your car next to Har Gamal and continue on foot to the promenade along the edge of the crater.

Watch this nice video by Isaac Gershon. Though, it’s better in reality!

5. Take a selfie with an ibex

The town is full of ibexes! If you love these beautiful animals, you’ll probably enjoy your stay here. Usually, you’ll find them around the edge of the crater, along Albert Promenade or next to the Barak and Amichai Viewpoint. If you’ll stay in the luxurious Beresheet Hotel , they might even come up to your room. Just make sure not to feed them! They don’t eat what we do.

How many days to visit Mitzpe Ramon?

I have passed through Mitzpe Ramon many times on my way to Eilat. But then I didn’t get enough time to appreciate the beauty and calmness of the place. So, if you want to experience the calm and relaxing vibe of Mitzpe Ramon, I recommend at least 2 days in the town. If you plan to do some hiking, it could even be 3-4 days. There’s not a lot to see in the town itself, but nearby Makhtesh Ramon (Ramon Crater) offers lots of beautiful sites and experiences. You can also use Mitzpe Ramon as a base for traveling to nearby places like Avdat National Park and David Ben Gurion’s Tomb.

When to visit Mitzpe Ramon?

In general, the best time to come to Mitzpe Ramon is in the fall, around October-November. February to May is also a good option. The days are usually pleasant for outdoor activities. Though, the nights may be chilly, because the town is located at a height of 840 meters. So, bring something warm for the night!

But if you’d like to see the meteor shower in Mitzpe Ramon, you’ll need to come sometime between 17 July to 24 August. Also, make sure to book a stay enough time in advance, because it can get completely booked early.

Where to stay in Mitzpe Ramon?

When I stayed in Mitzpe Ramon, I usually camped in the crater. The only place I stayed in the town itself was the Spice Quarter Inn , but I’m not sure I can recommend it. You can read my full review about Spice Quarter Inn here.

A place that seems reasonably priced with fairly good quality is the HI Mitzpe Ramon Hostel , but I’ve never stayed there.

If you want to camp inside the Ramon Crater, I recommend Be’erot Campground. Read my review about Be’erot Campground here. Selina Ramon also offers some budget-friendly stay options, although they’re a glamping site. There are also several free camping sites in the crater. Just keep in mind that camping is allowed only in designated places!

Where to eat in Mitzpe Ramon?

There are many restaurants in Mitzpe Ramon. Cheap restaurants can be found in the commercial center next to David Ben Gurion Boulevard. There are many fast-food restaurants over there, including a hummus place, Pizza Hut, and Mcdonald’s. If you want to eat something more special, it might cost a bit more, but I think it’s worth it.

In the Spice Quarter, there are some nice restaurants and shops. I recommend Ultra: Food from Israel and the Caucasus. It’s a Kosher restaurant serving excellent dishes from the Caucasian kitchen. I ordered potato dumplings and got a beautiful plate with a LOT of dumplings, accompanied by plenty of salads. It costs 60 shekels and was completely worth it! Other than dumplings, you can also order hummus, Caucasian rice with meat, homemade kebab, and more! The restaurant is open Sunday to Thursday from 12 noon to 10 PM and on Friday from 12 noon to 3:30 PM.

Money-saving tips for Mitzpe Ramon

You can spend a lot or a little in Mitzpe Ramon, depending on the type of vacation you’re planning. The town is full of luxurious places to stay, but you can also find some cheaper stay options. If you’re fine with camping, you can even camp for free in the nearby Ramon Crater. Just keep in mind you’ll need a car to get to Mitzpe Ramon, and that will cost you around 150-300 shekels per day.

How to get around Mitzpe Ramon?

Mitzpe Ramon is a very small place, so you can go around on foot. But you will probably want to visit Ramon Crater. So, for that, you’ll probably need a car. Taxis are costly, and it’s easier to get around the crater with a car. The basic cars should cost you around 150-300 shekels per day.

Another option to get into Ramon Crater is by hiking into it. But then you’ll need to find somewhere to camp there or pay for a taxi back to Mitzpe Ramon, which is expensive.

Meeting at Mitzpe Ramon at your accommodation place in the morning, driving all the way down to the lowest base layers that were formed in this area during the Jurassic era, we can feel and touch amazing stones and rocks, clay and sand in endless colors and shapes then we continue our tour and drive to Saharonim spring and the ancient Nabatean Khan parking place. Here we start our hike along the Nekarot horseshoe trail.

Following the Israeli national trial. It’s a beautiful and easy hike that takes 21/2- 3 hours. The trail is in the beautiful Wadi Ramon and the ruins of Khan Saharonim a 2000-year-old Khan on the famous Nabatean incense route. Wadi Ramon joins Wadi Nekarot and we will continue our trail surrounded by the massive boulders and the deep canyon walls.  Later we will climb back on the Nabatean trail, back to our jeep.  After a coffee break in one of the most beautiful spots and continue driving through wadi Ardon and its dykes (geological phenomenon).

We stop under the shade of the Acacia trees and get to know the desert world of plants and wildlife.  Next, we will visit Beerot campground for a toilet break, and next, we will drive across the crater on the pipeline road till the south end of Saharonim Mountain, continue to the main road, and then 4×4 trails to wadi Zochalim (reptiles).  Then we climb up on a 4×4 trail to the most amazing observation point at Mt. Gvanim.

From that point, we can look around 360 degrees and get the whole dimension of the crater, its beautiful colors, and shapes, and get to know and understand this unique geological phenomenon.

Tour prices include: one jeep accompanied by a professional tour guide, water supply, coffee, and tea.

Ein Zik

The Zin vally, Ein Aqev, Avedat, Zik and Sde Boker region 4X4 desert tour

Usually, we set up meeting at Ben Gurion’s tomb at Sde Boker, then drive down to the Zin valley along the serpentine route and then along the wadi of Zin, towards Ein Aqev, one of the only desert springs that are abundant with clear water throughout the year. A few minutes' walk from the parking lot and we are at the water spring. We can dip in the cool pool and rest for a while, then we will return back to our jeeps and drive through the Zin valley towards Ein Zik and Ein Shaviv, the largest Oasis in the Negev desert.

We walk around the oasis. This oasis is known as one of the centering of the Poplar trees, known as the Euphrates poplar, many palm trees, and unique flora and fauna around the scene. We will enjoy a coffee break in the shade and then drive back to the main road through the Zin accent.

There are various custom variations, depending on the time that suits you, we can build an itinerary of three, four hours, or a whole day at the Avdat and Sde Boker sites.

the incense route crossing ramon crater jeep trip

Following the masters of the desert, the Nabatean incense route one-day tour

Frankincense and Myrrh are aromatic scents used in ancient times as incense in worship, essential oils, and perfumes, and were the secret of the Nabataea community's wealth.

In order to guard and be the sole trader of this precious merchandise, brought from Yemen to the Middle East, the Nabataea chose a deadly desert route, possible due to their knowledge of desert survival. On this trip, we will follow their trails in part of the world, declared as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Tour details: Usually we set up a meeting at Mitzpe Ramon and start our way along the spice route. Stop for guidance at Mt. Gevanim one of the best observation points in the crater. Then we drive along Wadi Gevanim and Ein Saharonim . Take a short walk to see Khan Saharonim, and Ein Saharonim and drive down through Dekalim accent. Our next stop is along the wide and deep wadi Nekarot and Nekarot fort.

The route follows the deep Nekarot canyon and then climbs up to Katzra fort goes down to wadi omer and meets Moa. A walk around the archaeological site of Moa and from there we continue on the 4×4 trails and road 90. From road 90 we drive on the road back to Mitzpe Ramon.

wadi hava gorge

4X4 desert tours and hiking tour in the Negev gorges and canyons

In the Negev desert, there are many amazing places, varying landscapes, and unusual natural phenomena, all of which can be seen only by engaging in 4×4 tracks and hiking to these desert beauties. Most tracks are suitable for all ages, but there are also more challenging tracks. There are tours that include accommodation in the desert, under the sky in a tent, or in an organized campsite, for one night or more.

We can explore the famous Israeli national Trail and many other amazing tracks throughout the country.

The Negev highlands tour, a journey to the ancient and the modern culture in the desert.

Meeting at the Beresheet hotel lobby, after the meeting and the introduction, we will drive to the western edge of Mitzpe Ramon and stop at a very beautiful observation point at the Camel lookout point. Next, we will drive northwest from Mitzpe Ramon along the shoulders of the Negev mountain and the wadi of Zin, this area is the greenest in the desert around us, and in the last years, it came to be a part of an amazing project of desert agriculture. The vineyards around us supply grapes to some boutique wineries.

Then, we will return to highway 40 and drive north towards Avdat. The ancient city of Avdat, 2000 years old is a Nabatean-Bizantine city that was the center of life in the Negev highlands for 700 years.   Around the city, there were villages and farms and shepherds use to walk around with their flocks, on the black rocks around the city there are hundreds of rock engravings that can reveal to us some about their life in the desert, we will take a walk on the rock engraving trails.

Next, we will visit an authentic Bedouin tent and we will be invited to a lunch break in the tent, during our visit we will be guided by our Bedouin host that will tell us about the Bedouin heritage and their traditional way of life.

the menora har karkom

Har Karkom - Biblical MT. Sinai 4x4 desert tour

Har Karkom, Karkom Mountain, in the southwest Negev desert in Israel, is possibly the biblical Mt. Sinai. Excavations on the mountain, made by Professor Emmanuel Anati, discovered that it was a major Paleolithic cult center, many of the findings are evidence that Har Karkom was a sacred mountain to ancient cultures. along with tens of thousands of years.  Almost 40000 rock engravings, flintstones tools and weapons, shrines and altars, headstones, and traces of settlements were discovered around the mountain.

Geographically, its location is on the suggested route of the children of Israel in the exodus from Egypt. Among more than 20 other mountains, no one can tell for sure, where is Mt. Sinai, and in our day tour we will explore the mountain and learn about this amazing site.  Its location is on the suggested route of the children of Israel in the exodus from Egypt.

Its location makes it accessible only by jeeps and since it’s not allowed to use the border road for security reasons, the only way now is to drive down south and then west, about three – three and a half hours drive from Mitzpe Ramon. Since our way to the mountain is through a military firing range there is a need for permission from the army to enter the area and it is possible to visit there only on Saturdays.

Generally, the meeting is in Mitzpe Ramon since it is the nearest point to the mountain. It's more than 3 hours to drive from Mitzpe Ramon on road 40 south and drive through the Ramon crater, through the desert of Paran, and then to Mt. Karkom.  When we get to the mountain we start our hike to the mountain. Climbing up to the mountain followed by many rock engraving art and archaeological sites on top of the mountain. The view from the top of the mountain towards the Sinai and Paran deserts connects us to the biblical story and the unique sites of the desert culture together with an abundance of findings with ritualistic and sacred characteristics that are part of our guidance.

The hiking to the mountain is for about 3-4 hours and then we will return to Mitzpe Ramon. Please take into account that a very long and intensive day, over 12 hours. Usually, it requires an accommodation in Mitzpe Ramon on the night before the tour to make it possible to start the tour early in the morning.

desert campfire ramon crater

Overnight camping in the Ramon crater

An overnight stay gives you a perfect experience from the place you have visited. Our tour begins in the late afternoon, continuing through the time of sunset, twilight time, and later into the night. After a two hours 4×4 tour of the desert and after watching the sunset, we will settle down in a campground. Next, we will prepare dinner in a desert style on Poyke pots, sit around the campfire enjoying the cozy atmosphere of the night and watch the stars. Next, we will retire to sleep in tents.

At the first light of the day, we will wake up and watch the sunrise. Next, prepare breakfast and get back on the road. There is an option to return back to town or to continue to tour the desert by jeep or hiking.

The Negev Desert, covering approximately sixty percents of Israel's area, is one of the most beautiful regions of the world, offering a breathtaking mix of stunning nature and diverse desert landscapes. This area offers many routes, both short and long, that present us with the desert's rare beauty. The view from the crater's rim in Mitzpe Ramon and a visit to the town's various attraction offer a wonderful holiday, whether just one weekend or a longer stay.

Jeep tours in Makhtesh Ramon are your ticket into the many attractions of the Negev Mount region. Makhtesh Ramon is a diverse geological phenomenon – it is 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) wide and over 40 kilometers (25 miles) long, and is the largest of the Negev's makhteshim –the region's unique erosion craters or cirques. It is the largest makhtesh in the world, its ancient rocks shedding a light on the earth's early history, dating back to geological eras of more than 250 million years ago.

The purpose of our jeep tours is to allow each traveler to discover the desert's secrets and experience up-close the rare beauty of this unknown piece of land and to pass on our love of this special region. Makhtesh Ramon is a unique geological formation and the best way to experience its striking landscapes is a jeep tour.

"Jeep" has become, in Israel anyway, the term refering to ALL off road vehicles. In fact, we have chosen to use the Land Rover range of off road vehicles - the iconic Defender, and the slightly smallert butmore luxurious Discovery 2 and Discovery 3 . The Land Rovers are full time four wheel drive coil and/or pneumatic sprung vehicles capable of handling the roughest of terrain with relative ease and comfort.

We believe that the "jeep" should be used as a means to an end, the end being getting you our client to otherwise difficult to access areas so that you can get the most out of the time that we spend together. All our jeep tours, short and long, are guided by specialist guides with years of experience both in the field and behind the steering wheel. Our "jeeps" are licenced by the Israel Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Tourism to carry fee paying passengers and as such meet the strict regulations laid down by these two agencies.

Our "jeeps" are well equiped - we carry drinking water, first aid kits, two way VHF radios linked to each other and to the national emergency and SAR frequencies, cellular phones, winches, and alot of "unimportant" stuff like a camping stove so that we can treat you to a cup of freshly brewed hot coffee or herbal tea... We operate a huge variety of off road tours from short two hour tours upto multi day camping safaris - check out the "jeep" tour itineraries. For more information on some of the jeep tours we offer such as "jeep" tours in Israel, Ramon Crater , Tzin Wilderness , Ramon Crater "jeep" tour , Nabatean Perfume and Spice Route "jeep" tour , Arava Valley "jeep" tour, Judean Desert "jeep" tour.

Deep Desert Israel - Turning Adventure into Inspiration

Deep Sky Israel: Stargazing in Mitzpe Ramon

trip advisor

When you go out stargazing in Mitzpe Ramon you can actually do pretty well with a naked eye, but when you add our powerful telescopes into the picture, every star becomes a STAR!

Mitzpe Ramon is among the best locations in Israel (and in the world!) for stargazing. Why? Because down here, less is more: Less people, less cars, less streetlights and less businesses, meaning more darkness, more space, more stars, and a lot more time to watch the stars…

So while you’re down here, try finding a free evening (that shouldn’t be too hard) and join us for a rare opportunity to gaze into the endless, dark desert skies, with a private star observatory set up especially for you!

Israel stargazing in mitzpe ramon

On our stargazing activity you’ll enjoy a combination of spectacular astronomical telescope observations (according to what is visible that night) accompanied by mind-blowing explanations and facts about our universe, along side mythological heroes namedropping and famous myths related to the star constellations we’ll see.

The stargazing takes place in various locations in the desert around Mitzpe Ramon (inside or above the Ramon Crater) all of which are safe and easy to reach. We will coordinate the exact details with you once you make your booking. As a default, you will need to meet us at the spot (up to 15 minutes drive from Mitzpe Ramon), but if this is a problem, pickup from your accommodation is an option for a small extra.

Contact us to hear more or to book your private stargazing experience.
