Travel | a weekend guide in ouray, the country’s no. 1 vacation destination of 2024, men’s journal ranked ouray no. 1 out of 50 u.s. vacation destinations this year.

Ouray is a small mountain town, located five and a half hours outside of Denver, tucked in a valley and surrounded by the San Juan Mountain Range. (Photo by Lily O'Neill -- The Denver Post)

Editor’s note: This is part of The Know’s series,  Staff Favorites . Each week, we offer our opinions on the best that Colorado has to offer for dining, shopping, entertainment, outdoor activities and more. (We’ll also let you in on some hidden gems).

My birthday is close to Memorial Day weekend every year, and I like to take advantage of the long weekend by checking a town off of my Colorado travel list.

In years past, my friends and I have soaked up the San Juan Mountain views in the warmth of the Pagosa hot springs and gone whitewater rafting in Class 4 rapids down the Royal Gorge in Cañon City. This year, we’re planning on sandboarding through Great Sand Dunes National Park.

But it was my trip to Ouray in 2022 that still has me in pure awe. The mountain town is tucked in a valley surrounded by the San Juan Mountain Range and lives up to its “Switzerland of America” nickname. It takes roughly 5 1/2 hours to get there from Denver.

This month, Men’s Journal named Ouray the No. 1 vacation destination in the U.S. out of 50 on its 2024 list — for good reason.

Here’s a quick guide to my Ouray vacation for your reference, before the out-of-state tourists start crowding the humble mountain streets:

Where to stay: We booked Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs on the edge of town. Our room in the old-school lodge was small but affordable, and we weren’t spending much time inside anyway. When it rained, we warmed up in the red cedar tubs that are fed by mineral hot springs water.

Where to eat: We fueled up on coffee and chocolate croissants from Artisan Bakery & Cafe , watching topless, bright yellow tour Jeeps whiz down Main Street. We caught the golden hour (when only the peaks of the mountains are shrouded in sun) with some beers on the rooftop of Ouray Brewery . Then, for my birthday dinner, we celebrated with espresso martinis followed by braised short ribs and whipped Yukon potatoes at Brickhouse 737 .

A view of Ouray from Box Cañon Falls Park. (Photo by Lily O'Neill -- The Denver Post)

What to do: Our hotel was a quick walk away from Box Cañon Falls Park , where I highly recommend getting misted by a 285-foot waterfall plummeting into the quartzite canyon.

For summer visitors, horseback riding should be a top priority. We booked a two-hour ride in Ridgway, just down the road from Ouray, with Action Adventures Guide Outfitter . Riding through the aspen tree forests, creeks and alongside Ouray’s colorful landscape was an absolute dream.

If your legs need a break from all the nearby hiking trails, take a drive down the Million Dollar Highway . Not for the faint of heart, the 25-mile-long road winds around mountain and gorge views of all different hues of red, orange, blue and green. There’s also a “Switzerland of America” lookout point for a photo op.

On your way home, make a pit stop at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park , an hour outside of town. The steep look into the gorge, which I likened to the Grand Canyon’s little sister, reminds you just how small you are in this big world.

trips weekend

1.5-hour drive

Enjoy Tomales Bay views, small-town charm and the freshest seafood when visiting West Marin. Places like Point Reyes and Marshall make West Marin a go-to spot for city locals who need a breath of fresh air, and it is without a doubt one of the most picturesque parts of NorCal. Start your day with a cheese tasting at Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Co. before heading over to Heidrun Meadery to sip Champagne-style mead. Tony’s Seafood Restaurant is the ultimate place for clam chowder and BBQ’d oysters, but nothing beats a sunset dinner with fresh oysters and cod dip at Nick’s Cove . You’ll also want to check out the legendary Hog Island Oyster Co. while in town.

Where to Stay:

Accommodations are extremely limited in West Marin, but the Lodge at Marconi has completely changed the game by providing 45 retro, cabin-like guest rooms for visitors. The hotel sits in the heart of Marconi State Historic Park, giving guests premium access to hiking trails and picnic areas where you can admire Tomales Bay from up high. Though there is an adorable market in the lobby where you can purchase high-end snacks and bottles of wine, the Lodge at Marconi is set to open an on-site restaurant in June 2024.

trips weekend

3.5-hour drive

Lake Tahoe is a year-round destination that is home to some of California's most pristine scenery. The crystal-clear lake is surrounded by enchanting pines, which get dusted with a white blanket of snow during the winter. Whether you’re into skiing and snowboarding or hiking and paddle boarding, Lake Tahoe caters to a variety of outdoorsy adventures. There are also several breweries and lake-front restaurants where you can quench your thirst, including South Lake Brewing Company and Jimmy’s at The Landing Resort and Spa .

Located in Truckee, The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe is one of the nicest accommodations in the California side of Lake Tahoe. Open year-round, this sprawling resort is surrounded by picturesque pine trees on the side of a mountain. Edgewood Tahoe Resort is another high-end property, but just across the border near South Lake Tahoe, and the waterfront views are magical.

trips weekend

Healdsburg is the ultimate destination for weekend wine tasting near San Francisco. Despite its small-town charm and low-key vibe, Healdsburg is crawling with Michelin-recognized restaurants. From three-star SingleThread to one-star Barndiva , eating well is easy in this charming slice of wine country . If you’re exploring the main town square, you can also walk from tasting room to tasting room; highlights include The Society: Healdsburg , Siduri Wine Bar and Tasting Lounge and Selby Winery .

Those hoping to stay in the heart of downtown Healdsburg should consider booking one of the 16 intimate guest rooms at Hotel Les Mars . The French-inspired property is reminiscent of an Old World chateau, and the convenient location makes walking to each tasting room and restaurant a breeze. For a more traditional luxury resort experience, nothing beats the rolling vineyards and bungalow-style accommodations at Montage Healdsburg .

Carmel-by-the-Sea

2-hour drive

Carmel-by-the-Sea offers a European-esque escape that is a mere two hours from San Francisco. This unique beach town is home to cozy cottage-like buildings and storybook streets that make you feel as though you’re strolling around a real-life fairytale. Enjoy an afternoon of wine tasting before sitting down for dinner at one of the 60-plus restaurants. French food definitely reigns supreme in Carmel-by-the-Sea, with standouts such as La Bicyclette Restaurant , L’Escargot and Pâtisserie Boissiere.

Also known as the “Pearl of Carmel,” La Playa Hotel has been a luxe staple of the area since 1905. The former private mansion boasts 75 recently renovated rooms, with lush gardens surrounding the grandiose building. With the beach only steps away, this is the perfect hotel for travelers seeking bespoke luxury across the board. For a more intimate and boutique experience, book a room at the new Villa Mara Carmel , which features 16 residential-style, adult-only rooms.

trips weekend

3-hour drive

Big Sur is one of the best road trip destinations in the world, let alone Northern California. The dramatic and windy cliffside roads make for some of the most jaw-dropping photo opportunities all along the coast, but some can't-miss sights include Bixby Creek Bridge and McWay Falls. Since Big Sur looks like an actual screen saver, you’ll want to spend most of your time outdoors exploring, but once you’ve worked up an appetite, enjoy sweeping Pacific views at Coast Big Sur or river-side dining at the Restaurant at Big Sur River Inn .

Situated on 160 acres of awe-inspiring land, Alila Ventana Big Sur offers guests the best of both worlds with ocean and forest views. The all-inclusive experience allows you to make the most of your weekend escape with nourishing meals and a plethora of wellness activities like meditation, foraging and bike tours. Post Ranch Inn is another luxury property that sits atop a striking hill in Big Sur. With only 40 rooms, visitors are treated to exclusive accommodations along with complimentary breakfast and activities such as yoga and guided nature walks.

Israel Faced a Sophisticated Attack From Iran

The weapons Iran employed this weekend travel farther and are more precise than those Hamas and other allies have used against Israel in the past six months.

A bright line of light arcs across a dark nighttime sky.

By Jin Yu Young

  • April 14, 2024

Late Saturday, Iran began firing hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel, including weapons that experts say are more sophisticated than anything Israel had encountered until now in six months of fighting with Hamas and its allies in the region.

Previously, Israel had faced aerial attacks from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, whose rocket arsenal includes short-range (12 to 25 miles) and somewhat inaccurate 122-milimeter rockets of the Grad family, as well as Syrian-made M-302 rockets with a range of about 100 miles. Hamas also has Fajr-5 rockets from Iran and a similar, locally made version of the Fajr-5, both with a range of about 50 miles.

The weapons Iran used on Saturday can travel much farther, and some of them can travel much faster. Still, Israel said that nearly all of the missiles and drones that Iran fired were intercepted, many with help from U.S. forces.

In the attack, 185 drones, 36 cruise missiles and 110 surface-to-surface missiles were fired toward Israel, according to Israeli military officials. Most of the launches were from Iran, though a small portion came from Iraq and Yemen, the officials said.

Fabian Hinz, an expert on Iran’s military at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Berlin, said in a post on X that Iran was probably using a cruise missile developed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, the Paveh 351. It has a range of more than 1,200 miles — plenty to reach Israel from Iran.

According to his post, different versions of that missile have also been provided to the Houthis in Yemen and to the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces.

And Jeffrey Lewis, a member of the International Security Advisory Board at the U.S. State Department, said in a post on X that Iran was using land-attack cruise missiles that could carry around a ton of explosives.

He also noted that much of Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal has a long enough range to reach Israel. And though Iran’s drones carry much smaller explosive payloads than missiles, they have the advantage of being able to hover and shift targets.

In recent decades, Iran has largely been focused on deterrence, long-range missiles, drones and air defenses. It has one of the largest ballistic missile and drone arsenals across the Middle East, according to weapons experts, and is also becoming a major arms exporter globally.

Last year, after the attack by Hamas in October, Israel asked the United States for more precision-guided munitions for its combat aircraft and more interceptors for its Iron Dome missile defense system. Israel’s weapons arsenal includes Vietnam-era missiles, some of which have a failure rate as high as 15 percent.
