We have the best route options while cycling in Iceland right here, check them out:

1. Short Stay in Iceland, Road Bike – Reykjavik Route:

This is a great route if you do not have enough time or equipment to go any further in the island. This is an easy 42 km route that surrounds Reykjavik City. We had not chosen a route that would take you into the downtown because sadly, Reykjavik is not exactly the most bike-friendly city out there. You can ride on the streets but we really do not recommend it as the traffic can sometimes be bothersome. Please do not get us wrong, this route is still quite enjoyable. You will be riding along the coast taking pleasure on the ocean breeze!

If you happen to be taking any one-day tour to Landmannalaugar or the South Coast of Iceland, did you know you can also use hiking trails with your mountain bike? The most well-known trail is Laugavegurin, this 50 km route can easily be done in just one day so you can use your bus trip as a shuttle from and back to Reykjavik.

If you want to spend more time enjoying this beautiful landscape, there are also special cycling tours available for 2-3 days and up.

Iceland by electric bike: Why you should absolutely try renting an e-bike the next chance you get

Avatar for Micah Toll

I’ve been an electric bike proponent for well over a decade. My love affair with e-bikes began when I discovered their utility as car replacements (and has led to me living essentially car-free since high school). But I learned more about their usefulness as I dove deeper into the fitness and recreational aspects of e-bikes. Now, after a recent trip around Iceland, I have gained a whole new appreciation for electric bikes as tourist wheels. And here’s why you should definitely consider renting an e-bike on your next vacation.

A bit of context

When my wife and I travel, we usually like to dive a little deeper into the city or country hosting us. That means checking out the local eateries, craftsmen, parks, or anything else that could give us a closer look at the local culture. Tour buses, hop-on-hop-off excursions, and walking tours all have their advantages, but they also tend to keep you separated from the city you’re exploring.

We recently tried renting electric bikes as a way to get around Reykjavik, and now I never want to go back to seeing a city through glass or to spending a half-hour walking to a cool local site that could have been a seven-minute bike ride away.

For this trip, we stopped by the Reykjavik Bike Tour folks (who also apparently offer Segway tours too, but we wanted to get some good pedaling in, electric or otherwise).

iceland renting an e-bike

Renting an e-bike

The team there was super helpful and offered both opened-ended and guided e-bike tours. We like to feel pretty independent, so we went with the first option so we could explore on our own. But they helpfully left us with a giant map and pointed out all the coolest places along with suggestions for where we’d find the best bike trails and interesting sights to see.

In terms of hardware, I hopped on an Ikea e-bike that didn’t offer any special bells or whistles, but worked just fine and allowed each one of my pedal strokes to get amplified with the help of an electric assist motor. When renting an e-bike, you’re limited to the options at hand. But fortunately, most e-bikes will offer you a similar experience, bells and whistles aside.

My wife, who is quite petite, didn’t fit on the same model of electric bike that I used, but they helpfully rolled out a cute little Xiaomi e-bike that seemed like it was purpose-built for her, and so she had a blast on that model.

Both were folding models, which would have been neat if we wanted to toss them in a car and head farther outside of the city. But with so much to see right there in Reykjavik, there was no reason to get a car involved in any of this.

Neither e-bike had a throttle, which we’re both used to using, but European e-bike regulations generally mean that all of their e-bikes have the fun switch removed. Even without a throttle, a bit of light assist is all you need as long as you don’t mind doing a little honest pedaling yourself. That turns out to be part of the fun and also ensures you don’t get going too fast to miss the fun sights around you. It’s also a nice compromise as on pedal bikes we’d probably have spent more energy cranking out pedal strokes in the city and had less time or energy to enjoy the sights and sounds around us. And yet we were also still getting in some decent exercise , as my Fitbit helpfully informed me.

trek bike iceland

With our electric bikes helping ease the ride, we were able to pedal right along the Icelandic coast, stopping whenever we wanted to walk on the beach and get a closer look at anything that jumped out at us.

We’d never have been able to do that with a tour shuttle, especially since the roads didn’t even go that close to the most beautiful parts of the beach. We’d stop at small little harbors along the way and watch seals playing in the water, then hop back on the bikes whenever we were ready.

Riding back into the city found us on the streets again, but it was easy to wind our way into the less busy paths and away from traffic. A cute little hilltop park called our name, so we stopped there for a picnic lunch. Pro tip: remember to bring a little backpack for food and water on an e-bike excursion as you’ll still work up an appetite and a thirst!

Each time we wanted to check out another attraction or a cool little spot, it was just a few minutes away by bike. We had walked much of the city the day before, and we realized how much easier it was to get around to see some of the things that we wrote off as being “too far” previously.

trek bike iceland

Frankly, I don’t know how I’ve gone so long as an everyday e-bike rider but have yet to take advantage of these awesome tools on vacation. Renting an e-bike is like a cheat code to opening up a new city and exploring it faster, for longer, and with a bigger smile on your face.

Maybe I hadn’t realized this yet since I often think of going to a new city or country as a time to do something different, as in out of the norm.

But if e-bikes are my norm every day because of how great they are to navigate my own city, then it makes sense that they’d be great to navigate most other cities too.

And having had that experience in Reykjavik, I’m definitely looking forward to finding some electrified wheels on my next trip.

A great way to test ride an e-bike?

Electric bicycles are becoming an increasingly popular form of alternative transportation and a growing option for both fitness and leisure. But these are usually expensive machines, which makes buying one just to try it a risky endeavor.

If you have a local e-bike shop that offers test rides, that’s a great option. But since many people don’t have a local option for electric bike test rides, perhaps renting an e-bike on your next vacation or trip to another city would be a great way to get your feet wet, so to speak.

Until you try an e-bike for the first time, it’s hard to imagine what an odd combination of child-like fun and adult-like utility these things offer. But the first time you throw your leg over one and spin it up, you get it.

We often talk about an “e-grin” in the e-bike industry – that smile that all first-time riders have when they roll back around after their first loop on an electric bike. It’s something that transcends just about everything that separates us and makes us unique. In the end, it’s hard to find a person that doesn’t enjoy taking a spin on an e-bike.

And the more they integrate themselves into my own life, whether that’s my daily supermarket run or my once-in-a-while vacation excursion, the more I’m loving the fact that these awesome rides exist.

Iceland Bicycle Touring Route

Here's a look at my planned bicycle touring route around Iceland. Highlights of the Iceland bike tour will include Snæfellsnes peninsula, the Westfjords, Akureyri, and the F26 Divide Road.

My planned cycling route around iceland

Planned Route For Iceland Bike Tour 2023

I've been planning a cycling trip around Iceland for some time now. The flights are all booked, my dates are set (late July and August 2023), and now I've finally settled on a route.

Choosing a cycle route around Iceland was no easy task though. There's a lot of waterfalls, volcanoes, and other highlights to squeeze in!

With more or less 40 days to play with for cycling in Iceland, I had a few options for different routes.

Choosing where to bike tour in Iceland

One option, was to just do the main ring road (the Golden Circle) tour. This would have taken me around the island, but perhaps missed out on some wilder places.

Another idea, was to include the most extreme cardinal points on a cycle route around Iceland.

A semi-ridiculous idea, was to follow every coastal road I could (but that meant missing out the interior of Iceland).

Decisions, decisions!

Thorn Nomad Mk II with Rohloff speedhub - fully loaded bicycle touring

After a shakedown tour in Greece to test out new equipment (and myself it must be said!), I realised that I needed to balance ambition with reality.

Like every country I've ever been to, there was no way I was going to see all of Iceland by bike.

There was also no point in leaping straight into 100 km days and thrashing out a gruelling 2500 – 3000 km route around Iceland either.

Instead, I've come up with a more sensible idea to only (!) cycle 2000 kms during my bike ride around Iceland.

How I planned the Iceland cycling route

When it comes to bicycle tour planning, I love looking at paper maps and reading some guidebooks. Google maps is also great, but the main thing that has helped me plan this bike tour route of Iceland is Komoot.

I have to say that even just a few years ago, planning bike tours was never easy on cycling apps. Komoot (I use the premium version) works great though.

Not only can you plan the route (which I prefer to do on a laptop), but the mobile phone app also has navigation and downloadable routes.

All in all a marked improvement from years ago!

Related: Bicycle touring navigation

Below, you should be able to see my Iceland cycle touring route on Komoot. As I will be bicycle camping , I made this with day end points being either campgrounds, or good places to wild camp.

If you click through to it, you'll see it's also broken down into day by day stages of cycling.

Notes For Route Planning Iceland Bikepacking

As with all carefully laid plans, if this one lasts more than the first few days I'd be surprised! I do have some flexibility in that I have 10 spare non-cycling days to get things back on track if I have to.

I can use these as rest days, split longer days into different sections, or take days out because of bad weather.

Here's some rough notes to go with the stages of the route planning:

18/07/2023: Keflavik Airport to Vogar Camping

  • Activity: Land at the airport, put the bike together, take money from an ATM. Try leaving the bike box at a hotel or Geysir car rentals. Cycle to the campground.
  • End Place: Vogar Camping
  • Approx Distance: 17 km
  • Sleeping: Cabin at Vogar camping
  • Notes: Short day due to late arrival, bike assembly, and need to store the bike box. There might be left over food and gas canisters at the campground.

Related: Bicycle camping gear list

19/07/2023: Vogar Camping to Mosskogar Camping

  • Activity: Check for any equipment issues or lost items – I can get new stuff in Reykjavik if I have to. Ensure food supply for 2-3 days. Have a relatively easy day's ride to gradually get into the journey.
  • End Place: Mosskogar Camping
  • Approx Distance: 51 km
  • Sleeping: Tent at Mosskogar campsite
  • Notes: Charge electronic gear and stock up on food.

20/07/2023: Mosskogar Campsite to Thingvellir

  • Activity: Plan for a shorter day to allow for sightseeing in Thingvellir.
  • End Place: Thingvellir
  • Approx Distance: 36.4 km
  • Sleeping: Tent at Thingvellir campsite
  • Notes: Find a secure location to lock the bike if going hiking in the park.

21/07/2023: Thingvellir to Borgarnes

  • Activity: Full day of cycling, with the first challenging day's ride.
  • End Place: Borgarnes
  • Approx Distance: 90 km
  • Sleeping: Tent at Borgarnes campsite
  • Notes: Stock up on supplies at the supermarket upon arrival for the next 2-3 days.

22/07/2023: Borgarnes to Campsite near Arnarstapi – Snaefells Peninsula Iceland

  • Activity: Another long day of cycling. Ensure sufficient food for a couple of days.
  • End Place: Campsite near Arnarstapi – Snaefells Peninsula Iceland
  • Approx Distance: 94 km
  • Sleeping: Tent at campsite

  • Activity: Have a slightly shorter day of cycling around the peninsula.

  • Approx Distance: 71.8 km
  • Notes: Consider stocking up on supplies in Olafsvik.

24/07/2023: Olafsvik to Stykkishólmur

  • Activity: Another short day, which can be considered a rest day (haha). Confirm ferry times and stock up on food for 3-4 days.
  • End Place: Stykkishólmur

  • Notes: Prepare for the upcoming remote areas with limited food choices.

25/07/2023: Tjaldsvæðið í Stykkishólmi camping site to Flókalundur camping site

  • Notes: Utilize the day on the ferry for rest and preparation.

26/07/2023: Flókalundur camping site to Hnjotur Guesthouse

  • End Place: Hnjotur Guesthouse
  • Approx Distance: 70 km
  • Sleeping: Tent at guesthouse (if available)
  • Notes: Food might be expensive, consider stocking up for the next few days.

27/07/2023: Hnjotur Guesthouse (Round Trip)

  • Approx Distance: 50 km
  • Sleeping: Tent at guesthouse again
  • Notes: Might pass a few places to eat… so eat!

28/07/2023: Hnjotur Guesthouse to Bíldudalur Camping Ground

  • Approx Distance: 63 km
  • Notes: Check for available supplies in the area.

29/07/2023: Bíldudalur Camping Ground to Þingeyri

  • End Place: Þingeyri
  • Approx Distance: 86 km
  • Notes: Limited supplies may be available at a cafe.

30/07/2023: Rest Day

  • Activity: Take a day off to rest and recover from the previous days' challenging rides. Wash my bike touring clothes ?

  • Activity: Have a shorter day to allow for partial recovery. Consider resupplying in Ísafjörður for 3-4 days.
  • End Place: Ísafjörður
  • Approx Distance: 44 km
  • Notes: Use the time in Ísafjörður to resupply adequately.

01/08/2023: Ísafjörður to Wild Camp

The two tracks that connect these points are the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails. Covering only 67 miles, they traverse some of the most exotic and unrelenting terrain any rider will ever tackle.

For most travelers this journey begins with a bus ride to the starting point at Landmannalaugar, but those who do so miss the opportunity to ride one of the most amazing gravel routes on the island. Starting at the coastal hamlet of Vik, the scenic route follows the coast eastward for 25 miles before turning north on the black volcanic gravel F-roads that Iceland is known for. These are well maintained roads, with severe grades and countless deep river crossings to keep the effort honest. With this approach, the total loop is 144 miles.

Once in Landmanalauger, the singletrack route south on the Laugavegur trail begins with a daunting climb to the top of a volcanic plateau. Flanked by steam vents and hot pots, the route passes a number of trekking huts before reaching Þórsmörk, a popular rest stop with a small restaurant, and other amenities.

From Þórsmörk the route southward follows the Fimmvörðuháls trail beginning with a brutal climb to the high point just a few miles into the route. That first ten miles can easily consume half of the day with endless hike-a-bike and plenty of carry-your-bike. With many sections of downhill too steep and loose to be ridden, there are ample hike-downs to navigate the final such section of trail drops nearly 500 feet in less than a mile. The payoff at the end is the spectacular Skógafoss waterfall. This is a superlative route with scenery unrivaled anywhere in the world. You will earn your spurs with this route, one clearly designed for feet and not wheels.

  • Comments This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
  • Lake Alftavatn is hard to miss and makes for an ideal spot to camp. Brace yourself for Iceland’s infamous winds which regularly exceed 45 mph.
  • The tiny buffet at Þórsmörk is not cheap at $30 for all you can eat, but so delicious.
  • Landmannalaugar is worth a full day’s visit with many adjacent trails to hike and ride.
  • There are at least a dozen small off-shoot routes to explore adjacent to this route. It is advisable to fold in those routes for a good 10-12 day ride.
  • Iceland’s weather is extreme . Plan for hurricane level winds, buckets of rain and thick fog.
  • The interior routes involve countless river crossings, some of which are extreme. If your progress will be halted, it will be from a river in your path.
  • These routes were designed for trekking, so many miles of the route are genuinely not rideable.
  • The ideal riding season between July and mid-September provide as many as 22 hours of daylight and near constant 50-55ºF temperatures.
  • Iceland is outrageously expensive . Pack lots of money.
  • The rugged volcanic landscape can make finding camping spots difficult.
  • It is important to note that the entire outer ring of the island is predominantly private farmland, so wild camping is not often feasible. Many smaller villages have developed campgrounds which may be your only option.
  • Ideal camp locations include Lake Alftavatn and Þórsmörk, although neither are isolated or remote.
  • Camping along these trekking routes outside of designated areas will earn you a stiff fine.
  • One of the glorious aspects of Icelandic travel is the abundance of clean water that requires no filtering. You will need to quickly identify which rivers will likely have too much glacial sediment to be palatable.
  • There are NO resupply points anywhere in the interior of the island. The exceptions are a small shack with basic sundries at Landmanalauger and a few items at Þórsmörk. Vik has a small market and gas station with fuel, food and other basics.

Gravel cycling in Iceland

Gravel cycling in iceland: a dream for tough riders.

Iceland has become a trending destination for bikepackers and gravel cyclists. Never ending gravel roads and black volcanic landscapes. This is the side of Iceland that social media shows. But is it the only terrain Iceland has to offer? And most importantly, what type of obstacles do gravel riders have to overcome in Iceland?

A gravel cyclist’s paradise

Overall, Iceland is covered with more miles of gravel roads than tarmac roads. Sounds like a dream, right?

Icelandic backcountry roads have a surprise at every turn. Most of them are winding around dormant volcanoes, glaciers or moss covered lava field s. Reaching a remote farm can hide the next thrilling descent . The forgotten gravel roads also lead to remote peninsulas or mountain passes . There is no doubt that Iceland offers a great backcountry gravel riding experience .

The cycling expedition will test both your endurance and your skills level . A gravel trip with Icebike adventures will most certainly be the ride of your lifetime !

https://icebikeadventures.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Gravel-riders-cycling-by-a-geothermal-area-in-Iceland.jpg

The type of roads we ride

n Iceland, you will ride three main – and different-  types of roads on your gravel bike. We have tarmac roads, gravel roads and F-roads in the Highlands – the latter designed for off-road vehicles only.

We spent more than fifteen years scouting the most scenic routes of the Land of Fire and Ice. We have designed cycling tours offering a diverse selection of terrains.

Some of the routes we elect are remote, ruthless and exposed. But they reward you with the most scenic landscapes and cultural discoveries.

https://icebikeadventures.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/An-endless-gravel-road-and-two-cyclists-in-the-Icelandic-highlands.jpg

Icebike adventures’ gravel philosophy: chasing the best gravel roads

All our gravel tours are designed with one goal in mind. Guiding cyclists on gravel and F-roads offering the best of Iceland’s riding and views . On our  tours, tarmac sections are liaisons between gravel segments.

We do not hide that the roots of Icebike adventures are deeply connected to mountain biking. The “love of dirt” is still driving us towards creating Gravel adventures with a majority of off-road riding.

We recommend riders with a road cycling background to contact us  and arrange a bespoke tour. We know the best tarmac roads of the island!

https://icebikeadventures.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Gravel-cycling-in-the-westfjords-of-Iceland.jpg

Adjust your distance expectations when riding in Iceland

The famous physicist Albert Einstein discovered that “time is relative”. Like him, you will find out that “distance is relative” in Iceland . Jokes aside, our experience is that most riders fail to ride as long distances here as they would do at home.

For example, most cyclists describing themselves as “strong” request our guides to plan for “100 km of riding everyday”. Well, we usually have to replan for a more reasonable target of 60 “Icelandic kilometers”!

https://icebikeadventures.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Our-Guide-crossing-a-river-on-his-gravel-bike-in-Iceland.jpg

Why is gravel cycling in Iceland so demanding?

The denivelation:.

The terrain in Iceland is very undulating . There are few mountain passes you will have to overcome, but mostly a lot of hills . At the end of the day elevation gain can sum up to surprisingly high numbers . Furthermore, Icelandic gravel cycling is on average very demanding on your cardio .  This is because the elevation gain is not totalled in one large climb, but rather many smaller ones.

The specific gravel tours we offer are different. Please note that there is way more climbing on our Westfjords tours than on our Hekla tour.

https://icebikeadventures.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Gravel-roads-in-Iceland-are-not-always-hard-packed.jpg

The nature of the soil:

Volcanic ash is sometimes unevenly packed. We strive to get the latest information about the gravel roads condition, but the highlands have a life of their own. We sometimes have to ride road segments where recent floods or storms have transformed the packed gravel into soft sand . These sections are way slower and  consume more energy.

Some roads also have “ washboards” sections. They demand focus, and ability to choose the right line.  Once again we tend to avoid them and change routes if we get notice of their formation. Riding such segments will take a heavy toll on the cyclists.

Some rocky technical terrain:

Other sections – for example on the way down from Hungurfit mountain hut – are very rugged . They can feature a mix of loose small rocks and fixed larger ones . Those segments need focus and careful selection of your lines . Some sections – thus short- are almost cross-country mountain bike like.

The strong winds (almost everyday):

Don’t get us wrong, Iceland offers stunning days of incredible weather. Wide open blue skies and epic sunsets. But Freyr – the god of weather according to norse mythology – tends to balance those breathtaking landscapes. Indeed, your ride is ofter spiced-up with heavy winds or rain showers.

Locals tend to say something like: “In the highlands, no matter which direction you ride, it is going to be headwind”. This is actually quite accurate on a stormy day, because most of the remote areas are little to not sheltered.

We have experience with the weather being our boss though. Our team of guides closely monitor the weather and wind forecast everyday. They have the ability to reschedule routes on a daily basis to avoid headwinds as much as possible.

The views and photo breaks:

Do not forget to stop and enjoy the views! Like our mountain bike tours, our Gravel tripss are not about racing. We of course have guides able to keep up with any pace , even the fastest riders. The question is: can you follow 20 times Icelandic champion and world cup XC Racer Maria Ögn. And what about ultra-endurance cyclist and ITI Alaska finisher Bergur?

But this cycling adventure is also part of your holidays. Cultural stops, rivers, hot tubs, group pictures are likely to happen – and t hey will be long remembered! To say it boldly, you might not be the “King Of the Mountain”, but more likely the “Happiest rider on the mountain” 😉

No worries, there is almost only “hero gravel”!

And this is by far most of what you are going to ride with us 🙂 When hard packed, volcanic soil is extremely fast rolling. The kind of dream gravel terrain where you can effortlessly reach average speeds of 30 km/h.

Stop by today and our expert in-store technicians will have your ride rolling like new in no time at all. *Excludes certain e-bike models. Call or visit your local retailer for more information. Here’s how we’ll do it:

We want to know about your concerns, learn about your riding habits and understand your goals. That way, we can provide exactly what you need to get the most out of your bike.

One of our service advisers will put your bike in the stand and run it through our professional inspection process. They’ll describe what they’re noticing and address any concerns.

From there, we'll discuss how we can get your bike back up to speed with a service package, on-the-spot adjustments or replacement parts. We’ll also create an itemised receipt to make sure you’re comfortable with repair costs before we get to work.

Get to fixin’

Leave your bike with us, and we'll do the rest! You'll receive an email and/or text when your repairs have been completed, and we'll be sure to give you a call if anything pops up along the way. Plus, if our turnaround time exceeds 24 hours, we'll set you up with a complimentary demo bike.
