Visit Nebraska State Capitol

Nebraska State Capitol is a commanding governmental building in downtown Lincoln. Its distinctive tower is easily identifiable across the city and its elegant architecture incorporates elements of classical, Byzantine and ecclesiastical architecture. Explore this magnificent Capitol building to see Nebraska’s seat of government and the ornately decorated halls and galleries showcasing historical artworks and artifacts.

Wander around the Capitol’s grounds to admire the Indiana-sandstone structure’s intriguing architectural design. The New York architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue designed the building in 1920 and its construction spanned 1922 to 1932. Check out the references to church architecture in the capitol’s transepts and central rotunda.

Nebraska’s 93 counties are inscribed along the main building’s roofline and a series of bas-reliefs depict the creation of law, from Moses on Mount Sinai to the Magna Carta and Abraham Lincoln. Gaze up at the 400-foot (122-meter) tall tower to see its sculpted buttresses and gold-tiled dome framed by thunderbird mosaics. Atop the dome, you can see a sculpture of The Sower , representing local agriculture and fostering growth. To the west, you’ll find the impressive granite plinth and bronze statue of the Lincoln Monument.

Enter the Capitol’s corridor to discover the building’s interior. The Capitol is split into three parts: the Vestibule, the Great Hall and the Rotunda. Join a tour to get an insight into the history and artistry behind these ornate governmental rooms. See magnificent mosaics and sun motifs in the Vestibule. The Great Hall features the Nebraska Hall of Fame, where you can look at bronze busts of famous Nebraskans. See more mosaic panels in the Rotunda and the elaborate murals that decorate many of the hallways.

Head to the north tower elevators to gain access to the 14th-floor observation decks. Take in panoramic views of the city skyline from this historic tower. Pick up souvenirs from the Capitol’s Landmark Store in the south hall.

Tours take between 30 and 60 minutes and run hourly, except at noon. Admission and tours are free. You might catch a special event at the Capitol, such as music concerts, rallies and official ceremonies.

Nebraska State Capitol is located in downtown Lincoln and open daily. It is approximately a 20-minute walk from Lincoln’s Amtrak Station.

Experience Nebraska State Capitol Art

Experience the artwork of the nebraska state capitol, the nebraska capitol is unique because of the artwork.

When the Nebraska State Capitol was designed, the art received as much attention as the columns and stone that hold up the building. The artwork of the Capitol tells the story of Nebraska. It tells us where we came from, how we govern, how we live, how we create, and more.

This website is meant to tell those stories once again. As we take time to consider our shared histories and stories, the artwork within the Nebraska State Capitol reminds us of where we started and where we can go. The Nebraska Capitol Art Experience also celebrates the men and women who made the building what it is today.

No Labels Nebraska Party gains official party recognition

tour nebraska state capitol

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The Nebraska Secretary of State’s Office verified on Tuesday that organizers with the No Labels Nebraska Party have collected enough signatures to be recognized as an official political party in Nebraska. However, voters will not be able to register with the political party until after the May 14, 2024, primary. Voter registration for the No Labels Nebraska Party will begin May 15, 2024.

“County election offices did an exemplary job verifying the validity of signatures in a timely manner,” Secretary of State Bob Evnen said.

No Labels Nebraska Party organizers filed sample new political party petitions with the Secretary of State’s Office in November 2023. Organizers submitted completed petitions for review on March 19, 2024. The Secretary of State’s Office had 20 business days to verify signatures.

According to Neb. Rev. Stat. §32-716, organizers of a new political party in Nebraska need to collect signatures totaling not less than 1% of the total votes cast for Governor at the most recent general election for such office. The total number of signatures required for this petition was 6,728.

No Labels Nebraska Party organizers collected 16,175 valid signatures from Nebraska voters.

The No Labels Nebraska Party will be the fifth recognized political party in Nebraska, joining the Republican Party, Democratic Party, Libertarian Party and the Legal Marijuana NOW Party.
