Best places to take photos in San Diego, California
West coast, best coast? We’re not here to call a winner, but San Diego certainly makes a strong case with some of the best photo opportunities in SoCal. Read on for some of our favourite, Instagrammable locations for making and capturing memories with your loved ones. 📸
10. Law Street Beach
A stone-throw away from the more populous Pacific Beach is the local’s favourite, Law Street Beach and lookout. The grassy park area makes for a lovely spot to relax and take in the Californian way of life. 🌞 Make a note to bring a picnic and watch the sunset at this great location . You don’t want to miss the golden hour when the sunset paints the sky pink here (no rose-tinted glasses required – trust us). 🌅
“Darian was awesome to work with! She had tons of ideas for posing us and got big smiles from our 8 month old. We are so happy with our photos!”

Windansea Beach in La Jolla
“Liz was incredible in helping to plan a surprise proposal for my (now) fiancée. She was fantastic about communication and coordination, and even helped scout the perfect spot at our location. Her pictures turned out amazing and we are so excited to have them as a memory of that day.”

Quiz: Which San Diego Adventure is Right for You?
Unique San Diego Photo Spots For Every Month of the Year
There are many San Diego photo spots where you can capture stunning pictures, but some places are better to go than others depending on what time of the year it is. So today I’m breaking down some of the best places to take pictures in San Diego for each month!
The Photography Gear I Use
Ever since starting my blog, I have learned to love photography more and more. Over the years I have gone through many different cameras and photography gear. Below is what I am currently using and some of my favorite products.
Camera: I currently use a mirrorless Canon EOS RP . I love this camera because it is lightweight which is perfect for all the hiking and traveling I do. It is also reasonably affordable as it is the lowest mirrorless camera in the Canon “R series.”
-Cotton carrier (affiliate link?)
-Lenses: I personally love the 24-70mm f 2.8 lens as it is the most versatile lens you could have. It offers a low f-stop to create that blurry background effect and it has a decent zoom range.
-Accessories: Some camera accessories that I live by are my lens cleaning pen . I use this when any dust gets on my lens or if there are water droplets on the lens from being out in the rain. Another favorite accessory I have is my camera bag . It has amazing storage and I love that it can fit my laptop in it too!
General Tips For Taking Outdoor Pictures at San Diego Photo Spots
Wherever you’re going to shoot photos, there are a few practical tips I want to share with you that will help level up your pictures.
Shoot in the best natural light. This is usually early in the morning or late afternoon when the sun isn’t so direct or harsh. Shooting outdoors means you won’t have as much control over the intensity and direction of light. If you want to take advantage of “golden hour” or “magic hour,” it’s best to set-up and be ready to go about an hour before sunset or sunrise.
Bring the right lenses with you. If you’re trying to capture more of the landscapes when you’re heading out to all the best places to take pictures in San Diego, you’ll want to bring the correct lens. I like to use XXX for getting the best photos when I want to incorporate more of the landscape.
Shoot in RAW vs. JPEG. When you shoot in RAW mode, it’ll take up more space on your memory cards, but the upside is that it’ll give you more control and flexibility when editing your photos!
Best Outdoor Places To Take Pictures in San Diego Each Month of the Year
January: sunset cliffs.
Sunset Cliff is a well-known area in San Diego, but what makes it unique is that usually when people think of January, they picture cold winters. This isn’t the case for San Diego. With an average of 24 days of sunshine and day temperatures in the mid to high 60°’s F, you have a high chance of catching a gorgeous ocean sunset on a warm day in January. It’s one of the best San Diego Instagram spots to watch the sun disappear beneath the waves. These best sunset spots in San Diego have even more locations if you’re a sunset lover like me!
Location: Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, San Diego, CA
February: Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
Winter is actually one of the best times to visit California deserts while the weather is still pleasant (it can reach up to 120 in summer!) and it’s not too crowded. This SoCal desert is about an hour and a half from San Diego, but worth the drive and visit. With all the hiking and camping you can do in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, there are plenty of opportunities for amazing photos, like the Borrego Badlands or the starry sky when camping at night.
The wildflower bloom that happens here in spring actually makes this spot a really popular San Diego photo shoot location. The flowers first start to pop up in mid-February and usually peak in March.
Location: Anza-Borrego Desert State Park , Borrego Springs, CA
March: The Salk Institute Courtyard
The Salk Institute , designed by Jonas Salk and Louis Kahn, is one of the most architecturally renowned sites in the world and pays homage to science. The courtyard contains the River of Life (a man-made stream that leads toward the ocean) and during the spring and fall equinoxes, it perfectly aligns with the sunset. The way it glows like gold during those times makes it one of the most remarkable San Diego photo spots! This year, the Spring equinox is on March 20 and the fall equinox is on September 22.
Location: 10010 N Torrey Pines Rd., La Jolla, CA 92037
April: The Flower Fields
The Flower Fields in Carlsbad where you can see almost fifty acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus is definitely one of the most popular San Diego Instagram spots, but as part of the local heritage, it is a must in spring! Open from March 1 until Mother’s Day this year, you can also enjoy tractor wagon rides, a sweet pea maze, and old-fashioned gemstone mining.
Location: 5704 Paseo Del Norte, Carlsbad, CA 92008
May: Botanical Gardens in Balboa Park
Balboa Park , which is close to downtown, has a lot of areas that can be used as San Diego photoshoot locations, but one specific place in the park that’s great for spring is the Botanical Gardens . This historic building was built for the 1915-1916 Exposition and the Lily Pond and Lagoon in front of it is one of the most famous places to take pictures in San Diego, especially for weddings.
Location: In Balboa Park on El Prado walkway adjacent to the Timken Museum of Art.
June: San Diego County Fair
If you’re visiting San Diego in the summer, going to the San Diego County Fair is totally something to add to your to-do list. Fun rides, fried foods, shopping, exhibits, and live entertainment can all be found here. Whether you’re taking a picture with the big Ferris wheel, the pigs in the animal exhibits, or with your fried Oreos, it’s one of the most fun places to take pictures in San Diego!
Location: The Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar, CA
July: Beaches
Honestly, the beauty of SD is that all of its beaches are great San Diego photo spots. From Scripps Pier in La Jolla (one of the most instagrammable locations) to the hustle and bustle of Mission Beach, you can’t go wrong with snapping photos at whichever beach you choose to soak up the summer sun! My favorite beach to go to for beautiful scenery and ample activities is La Jolla beach. Here you can kayak, swim, paddleboard, and sometimes even swim with sharks.
Location: (La Jolla Beach)
August: Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá
Even if you’re not religious, Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá is a special place to visit. It’s California’s oldest mission which was founded in 1769 and it is still an active Catholic church today. It’s a favored spot for engagement photos and weddings, and one of the best historical places to take pictures in San Diego and learn about some California history.
Location: 10818 San Diego Mission Road, San Diego, CA 92108
September: Chicano Park
Being so close to Mexico, San Diego naturally has a large Hispanic population. September 15-October 15 is Hispanic Heritage month and a great way to celebrate is to take a visit to Chicano Park , which is the “geographic and emotional heart of Barrio Logan.” It’s home to the largest concentration of Chicano murals in the world and the beautiful artwork makes it one of the best cultural San Diego photo spots.
Location: Logan Heights between Logan and National Ave., San Diego, CA
October: Bates Nut Farm
Going to a pumpkin patch is one of my favorite things to do in fall! One of the places I love visiting for this activity is Bates Nut Farm . Check out my full guide on all the things you can do there and be sure to bring your camera because there are a bunch of opportunities to take pictures, which makes it one of the most attractive San Diego Instagram spots for this season. If you’re not a fan of pumpkins, an alternative San Diego photoshoot location for fall is to go apple picking in Julian !
Location: 15954 Woods Valley Rd, Valley Center, CA 92082
November: Hiking Trails for Fall Leaves
Nothing can compare to fall on the East Coast, but you can do some leaf-peeping in November when the temperatures start to cool in SoCal. Hiking trails are actually going to be some of the best San Diego photo spots to see the changing fall leaves. Here are some of the best hikes for this particular activity:
Hikes for fall leaves
- Sunset Trail: Laguna Mountain Recreation Area 10678 Sunrise Hwy, Descanso, CA 91948
- Thunder Ridge and Chimney Flat Loop: Palomar Mountain State Park – 19952 State Park Dr, Palomar Mountain, CA 92060
- Volcan Mountain: 1209 Farmer Road at Wynola Road, Julian, CA 92036
- Observatory Trail: Cleveland National Forest – 35899 Canfield Road, Warner Springs, CA 92061
- Lake Cuyamaca: Cuyamaca Rancho State Park – 15027 Highway 79, Julian, CA 92036
December: Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach
You wouldn’t think that a beach pier would be one of the best holiday places to take pictures in San Diego, but that’s what makes it so unique! There aren’t many places where you can see a Christmas tree on a pier, but that’s exactly what the owners of Crystal Pier do (which is actually private property but open to the public during daytime hours).
Location: Pacific Beach, San Diego, CA
BONUS Year-Round San Diego Instagram Spot:
For tourists and locals alike, one San Diego photo spot that is trendy all year long is the famous Greetings from San Diego Mural that was painted in 2016 as part of the “Greetings Tour.” Head here and post to your IG to give everyone a cute “Hello!” from SD.
Location: 4225 30th St., San Diego, CA 92104

10 of San Diego’s Best Known and Unexpected Photo Spots
As a professional photographer living in San Diego, I’m often asked where my favorite photography spots can be found. I think it’s safe to say that there’s no shortage of beautiful, photogenic landscapes across San Diego. No matter what your skill level is in photography (or even if you just want to take some nice photos with your phone), when you travel to San Diego you’ll find more than enough spots to check out. However, here are some of my favorite locations that offer picturesque views that are perfect for photographers or anyone just who wants to enjoy an awesome sunset (my favorite time of day to shoot).
Here are the best known and unexpected spots you should visit on your next trip to San Diego:
Scripps Pier
Scripps Pier is easily one of my all-time favorite spots that I’ve photographed hundreds of times. I highly recommend taking advantage of the entire surrounding area to capture the pier and beach. This is an awesome spot at any time of the day, but it is the best right around sunset! You are also right up the hill from the La Jolla Cove and across from the Birch Aquarium , so you can easily spend a day in La Jolla .
Pro Tip : I would recommend exploring the surrounding paths and hills to find some unique angles to shoot from. Bring a couple of different lenses and get away from the main crowd that’s down by the beach so you can find some unique spots and compositions. Drop your shutter speed (below 1/60) to get some neat long exposure shots and smooth out the water!
Windansea Beach
Windansea Beach is a popular location for engagement and graduation photos because of the rocks and the unique locally-built grass hut right by the water. A few yards beyond the hut is another one of my favorite spots to shoot. Using the elements at hand can help you frame your photo to offer a unique perspective.
PRO TIP: It does get pretty busy here at all times of the day, so if you are coming here for sunset photos, leave a little early to find a spot to park and set up your camera. This is also a super fun place to fly a drone. There are many beautiful aerial shots you can get of the shoreline and the rocks looking down on the water. Pack all your gear if you visit this spot as it’s perfect for all styles of photography!
Coronado Island
Headover to Coronado Island for the best place to photograph the entire downtown San Diego skyline. Look over the water towards the city as the sun sets, and all of the highrises and buildings glow, creating the perfect backdrop to any landscape shot or portrait you might be taking. It’s also just a great spot to hangout and enjoy the views of the city at any time of the day or night.
PRO TIP: Be sure to pack your wide angle lens– anything between 14-16mm is perfect for this spot. Don’t forget your tripod if you also want to get some neat timelapse or long exposure shots of the city at night. There are a decent amount of spots to shoot from over here, so walk around to find some creative angles and neat foreground elements if you are photographing the city.
Balboa Park
I think most San Diegans will tell you Balboa Park is a special place. Those of us who grew up here remember taking school field trips to see one of the dozen museums or exhibitions taking place. When you come here, have your camera ready to capture captivating views at any moment. While there are multiple gardens on the property, I always recommend stopping by the rose garden or the botanical garden. You can even go up to the top of the Old California Tower for some of the best views in the entire park!
Pro Tip: Bring your fastest lens and get some awesome shots of the garden as the light here can be awesome in the evening. If you can make it up to the top of the California Tower right before sunset, bring a long telephoto lens (100mm-400mm) to get some really unique photographs. There are a lot of cool sightlines up there that you can only see by looking through a camera. This is another spot that gets very busy so plan ahead and allow enough time to explore the entire area.
Cabrillo National Monument
How many cities get to say that their historical spots also have amazing views? Come here to see and learn about San Diego’s first lighthouse built in 1855! On a clear day, you can see all of downtown and even south into Mexico. There are even tidepools down by the water, and some great spots for engagement photoshoots. Depending on what time of the year you are here, you might even see the ocean and harbor full of sailboats during a race.
Pro Tip: Be sure to bring your telephoto lens– 150mm or 400mm lens is my go to for up here. This way you can get some awesome shots looking back toward downtown. Also, you can actually go inside the lighthouse! There is a neat spiral staircase that you can shoot down from the top and it makes for an interesting photo. For the best results, you should also pack a 14mm or 16mm lens, which is the ideal lens for this staircase shot.
Torrey Pines
You can’t go wrong with any area in Torrey Pines , so I recommend this location especially for new photographers. Spend time exploring the beaches and trails to easily expand your photography portfolio. You can also hike one of San Diego’s most popular trails (Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve) while you take photos and enjoy the beach views. Overall, just a great spot to visit at any time of the day!
Pro Tip: If you plan on hiking the trail and taking photos, bring a minimal camera setup as there are a decent amount of hills and the extra weight of a camera bag can be tiring. You could carry a small 50mm lens or even just your phone and still get some great shots while enjoying the hike! It’s busy here pretty much all day, but it’s worth the visit. Early mornings are hard to beat, as you can watch the sunrise from the top while enjoying the ocean views and taking some simply amazing photos!
Swami’s Beach
Swami’s Beach is a gem of North County San Diego, and a great beach area to photograph. There are various lookouts and benches to view the ocean, you can walk along the 101 to explore, or you can head to the nearby Meditation Gardens to relax. There are tons of great shops and restaurants around here, but the ocean views along the coast are definitely the star of the show.
Pro Tip: Early morning or right before sunset is the best time to be here. On a super clear day, the colors of the sky reflecting off the water mixed with all of the surrounding palm trees make for some awesome shots. There is even a staircase that will take you down to the shore. This is also a great place to take some long exposure shots and timelapses. Bring all of your gear with you as there are so many awesome spots in the general area to photograph!
Talbot Street View
A favorite view and vantage point of mine to see downtown San Diego is actually on Talbot Street. This steep hill gives you some awesome angles of downtown and you can use the trees in the neighborhood, as well as the steep street, to frame your shot. This is also my favorite spot to watch 4th of July fireworks that happen out on the bay.
Pro Tip: A telephoto lens (100mm+) works really well here if you want to capture awesome shots of downtown. If you are here for fireworks, a tripod is a must. Try a 1-3 second shutter speed starting as soon as you see the fireworks shoot off. This way you capture the entire firework from start to finish. It might take a few tries, but with the right timing, you’ll get the fireworks photo you have been eager to capture.
Oceanside Harbor
If you are in the Oceanside area, about as far north in San Diego as you can get, you can look forward to exploring many unique shops, restaurants and places to walk around and explore. A bit north past the pier and down by the harbor, you’ll find some great picnic spots and photo opportunities. My favorite spot is right down by all the boats docked in the harbor. The reflections from the water make for some neat shots.
Pro Tip: Get extra creative and low to the ground here to add more reflections in your shot. On a day where there are some clouds in the sky, and as soon as the sun sets, you can get awesome reflections of the clouds and colors in the water. There are many spots to walk around, so come a little early and find your favorite angle and view so you know exactly where you want to shoot when the sun starts to set. A lower shutter speed will look better for reflections as this will smooth out the water a bit and make it look calmer.
SD Airport Bridge
The planes that come in to land at the San Diego International Airport take a really unique and low flight path. There’s a bridge right above the 5 freeway that is a great spot to capture the planes as they land or take off. Head over to the corner of Palm and India street and you’ll find a good place to park and the entrance to the bridge across the street. Walk across the entire bridge and look at all parts of the fence. You’ll actually find a few different openings that a camera lens will fit through so you can shoot from multiple spots. This is another great spot for photos, videos and timelapse content. Sunrises and sunsets are awesome from here!
Pro Tip: When you’re flying into the city, try to get a seat on the left side of the plane. As you land, you get a neat view of all of downtown and the ocean. Some unique photo opportunities you can only see from an airplane window! You’ll only have a split second to get some shots so get your camera settings ready ahead of time. At least a 1/250 shutter speed if possible!

Beautiful Places in San Diego to Take Family Pictures
Photos taken at the Kate O. Sessions Cactus Garden in Balboa Park.
Taking family photos is a great way of documenting memorable events that happen in our lives and capturing important milestones. These moments frozen in time help us see our loved ones grow up and change over the years. Photographs become a precious legacy that can be passed on from generation to generation.
One of the most breathtaking places to take family pictures in Southern California is undoubtedly San Diego. With stunning natural beauty ranging from world-famous beaches, pristine parks and even modern urban neighborhoods, this city has some of the best backdrops in the country.
Choosing to take family pictures in the beloved San Diego city is an easy decision because there's a locale for every kind of vibe you could be going for. Below you'll find 15 of the most Instagrammable places in San Diego where you can have a photo shoot with your loved ones, regardless of the occasion.
San Diego’s Beautiful Weather
San Diego is famous for having year-round pleasant weather, and most days are warm and sunny. The Mediterranean climate of San Diego features hot, sunny, and dry summers, making it the ideal place to enjoy quality time with your family. The fall and spring are also great times of year for San Diego adventures, and the winters are generally mild.

Top 15 Photoshoot Locations in San Diego
Balboa park.
Home to numerous museums and gardens, Balboa Park is both a cultural oasis and botanical haven in the middle of the city.
For my sister-in-law's wedding, we shot family photos in the Kate O. Sessions Cactus Garden in Balboa Park . I really loved the bohemian vibe from the desert landscape with giant cacti plants. There’s also the lesser known Old Cactus Garden (circa 1935) which we photographed in this guide .
Outside of the cactus gardens, noteworthy gardens include the Alcazar Garden, the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden and the Zoo Garden.
In addition to the gardens, the many buildings with Spanish Colonial architecture inside Balboa Park can be unique backdrops for your photos. You can also shoot in front of the Botanical Building and Lily Pond, a very popular choice. And finally, the Spreckels Organ Pavilion is a very romantic venue for lovebirds and sweet family portraits.

Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma
Sunset Cliffs features breathtaking ocean views, dramatic cliffs and caves, and native coastal sage scrub habitat. It is by far one of the most beautiful locations in San Diego to have a family photoshoot, as the rugged coastline and panoramic view will prove to be a stunning background for your pictures.
Furthermore, as the name suggests, you can admire the most amazing sunsets in Point Loma and take photos with your loved ones during the coveted "Golden Hour".
Pro Tip: Golden Hour is referring to the hour before sunset where there’s an abundance of diffused light, which is the most flattering lighting for portrait photos.
Porch views at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Old San Diego.

Old San Diego
Featuring historical sites, Mexican heritage remembrances, and colorful shops, Old Town in San Diego is a great place for California history buffs to explore and photograph. The Old Town provides a glimpse into olden days colonial life in San Diego with preserved buildings and replicated sets.
If you want to capture the area's historical essence, seek out photo opportunities in the old ranch homes, schoolhouse, and recreated scene vignettes scattered around the grounds.
Historical buildings you can chose as your photo backdrop in Old San Diego include The Whaley House Museum, The Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casa de Estudillo. There is also the Heritage Park which showcases the city's Victorian era with restored houses from the 1800s.
Lastly, there’s an Instagram famous tiled staircase that many families and couples love to photograph, which is also located in Old San Diego (see photo above). You’ll find it right in the middle of all the artisan shops selling traditional Mexican dresses and Dia de los Muertos home decor.

Carlsbad Flower Fields
If you're looking for a bright and colorful background for your family pictures, put the Carlsbad Flower Fields on the top of your San Diego bucket list . The Carlsbad Flower Fields has one of the most spectacular displays of natural color and beauty in the whole world. I know it's a big claim but it's true!
For over six decades, this particular flower farm has planted and bloomed over fifty acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers. These flowers only bloom in the springtime and the farm has limited months when they're open. Be sure to check their website before making plans to visit.

Urban Photos in Little Italy
Little Italy is a district in Downtown San Diego that was originally a preponderantly Italian and Portuguese fishing neighborhood. Today, it's a popular metro neighborhood full of trendy restaurants and boutiques.
Little Italy is definitely worth visiting, and while you're there, you can have a memorable family photoshoot at Piazza della Famiglia , the central gathering point in the area. It's a 10,000-square-foot plaza connecting India and Columbia streets and featuring a dramatic tiled fountain – the perfect background for your pictures.
Old Poway Park
Enjoy a peaceful picnic in the beautiful Old Poway Park, wander the meandering pathways, and have a lovely rustic-themed family photo shoot on the Poway Midland Railroad.
After you get the perfect shots, you can explore this fantastic place and learn about its rich history, dating back in 1907.
While you're in the area, you may also want to visit the nearby Metate Meadows , which abounds in natural beauty and scenic views. Both places are dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry family member for your photo shoot, too!
Views from the Mount Woodson trail up to Potato Chip Rock.
Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas
Operated by the city of Encinitas, Moonlight State Beach is a San Diego state park. It features a grass park with a kids' play area where you can take candid photos of your little ones while they're having fun.
This beach is one of the very few in California to have fire pits, so you and your loved ones can enjoy a classic Southern Californian beach bonfire after taking family pictures.
Between surfside jaunts and boogieboard sessions, you can also enjoy a picnic and spend quality time with your family, as Moonlight State Beach includes ample picnic tables and multiple grills.
Photos taken at Potato Chip Rock.
Take Photos at Potato Chip Rock
Located on the Mount Woodson summit, Potato Chip Rock is a natural tourist attraction in San Diego that can easily make for a series of either funny or epic photos.
This particular rock formation is in the shape of a giant potato chip (hence the name). You can walk to the tip of the rock and there's an optical illusion that you're dangling high above the mountain. But don't worry, it's actually pretty safe, it just looks dramatic in photos.
In regards to the funny photos, visitors have gotten creative over the years and taken some memorable photos where it looks like they hanging on for their life. You can also take photos filled with natural landscapes while you are hiking on the trail up the mountain.
I should warn you that this is a popular tourist spot, especially on the weekends. The line for photos on the rock can get long during the daytime. My advice is to go during the week, or early in the morning at sunrise.
Pro Photographer Tip: There’s very little shade on the Mount Woodson trail, which means you can end up with very shadowy photos if you shoot at the peak sun times. My advice is to hike up either early at sunrise, or an hour before sunset to get the best lighting. Just make sure to leave yourself enough time to hike and take the photos.
Scripps Pier Beach in La Jolla
Scripps Pier Beach in La Jolla might be the perfect location for those of you who are seeking a beachy background for your family pictures. The place is very popular for family portraits because of the amazing scenery, the picturesque pier and colorful sunset views.
If you choose this beach as your photo shoot location, make sure to shoot the pier from multiple angles, including standing under the pier in the surf. Scroll to see multiple photo examples we took ourselves at this beach.
During the winter months between November - March, dogs are allowed on a leash at Scripps Beach. You can bring along your pet to have a complete family portrait, furry babies included.

Torrey Pines State Reserve in La Jolla
Another great family photoshoot location in La Jolla is Torrey Pines State Reserve. This is a reserve dedicated to preserving the Torrey Pine tree and indigenous wildlife in its native environment. It is a coastal wilderness of pine forests and sandstone canyons with scenic trails winding along the cliffs, offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
So, if you're planning a nature-themed family photoshoot, Torrey Pines State Reserve is the ideal location for you. The best trails include the Razor Point Trail, the Guy Fleming Trail, and the Beach Trail.

Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach.
Mission Beach and Pacific Beach
Mission Beach 's most prominent feature is the Oceanfront walking trail which runs along the coastline. The beach in this iconic spot has bright white sand and calm waves, making it your quintessential Southern California backdrop.
When you’re walking in the northern direction along the Oceanfront trail, you’ll eventually find yourself in the next beach over known as Pacific Beach.
Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach is a long pier open to the public. You can walk all the way to the end and see sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Another great spot for sunset photos!
Oceanfront Walk Way between Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.
White sand at the Coronado Beach with Hotel del Coronado in the backdrop.
Coronado Beach
Coronado Beach is set against the gorgeous backdrop of the iconic Hotel del Coronado , featured in Marilyn Monroe's film "Some Like It Hot". Not only is this place ideal for a romantic getaway but also for a fun, relaxing family beach photoshoot. The long sandy beaches sparkle due to the mica in their golden sand and feature tall palm trees.
Another great photo background you can explore in Coronado is Glorietta Bay, which offers a unique view of the Glorietta Bay Hotel and the San Diego-Coronado Bridge.
San Diego Skyline Photos in Centennial Park in Coronado
As a hotspot for wedding party photos, lively events, and – why not? – family pictures, Centennial Park offers a breathtaking panorama view of the bay and downtown San Diego. This lookout spot is located directly across the bay from the metro Gaslamp Quarter, so you can perfectly see the outlines of the skyscraper buildings.
Because Centennial Park is only a few steps away from the Coronado Ferry Landing , you can also take candid photos at lunch with your loved ones while you're there, as it boasts great local eateries.

Photos: See the Cutest baby animals at the San Diego Zoo
A growing number of babies have joined the more than 14,000 rare and endangered animals at the San Diego Zoo this year.
Zoom in: Here's a look at some of the cutest new arrivals and others who've been hanging at the zoo for a while.
Amur leopard cubs
An Amur leopard cub, which are the most critically endangered of all leopards, plays at the San Diego Zoo. Photo: Courtesy of San Diego Wildlife Alliance
Twin amur leopard cubs , born in March 2023, can be spotted when they’re most active in the mornings and late afternoons, along with their mom Satka.
- One is named Ulybka, which means “smile” in Russian, and the other is Zorinka, which means “little star” in Russian.
The intrigue: Amur leopards are the most critically endangered of all leopards and one of the rarest big cats in the world, according to the zoo.
Two-toed sloths
A baby sloth hangs upside down on a tree branch at the San Diego Zoo. Photo: Courtesy of San Diego Wildlife Alliance
Swoon over the soft smile or the sleepy nature of this snuggly-looking baby sloth, who was born in June 2022.
- This sloth was hanging upside down on its own before it was a month old. As you might know, sloths spend almost their entire life upside down in the trees, whether eating, sleeping, mating and even giving birth.
If you go: The sloths can only be seen in daily wildlife presentations at Wildlife Explorers Basecamp and Wegeforth Bowl.
Andean bear cubs
Two Andean bear cubs wander out of their den with their mother at the San Diego Zoo. Photo: Courtesy of San Diego Wildlife Alliance
These twin Andean bear cubs might be missing blue coats and red bucket hats (and probably shouldn’t eat marmalade sandwiches), but they’re the same species as the storybook character Paddington.
Fun fact: Andean bears are also called spectacled bears because of their unique white fur around their eyes that can make them look like they’re wearing glasses.
A red panda cub was born at the San Diego Zoo in June. Photo: Courtesy of San Diego Wildlife Alliance
Pavitra the baby red panda was the first born at the San Diego Zoo in nearly two decades, a milestone for the endangered species.
- The global population of red pandas has dropped by 40% over the last 50 years due to a variety of threats including habitat loss from increased human encroachment and climate change, according to the zoo.
The intrigue: San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance partners with the nonprofit Red Panda Network to identify unprotected red panda habitats and train locals in Nepal to help monitor populations, preserve those areas and educate the community.
A baby Koala hangs onto the back of its mother while perched in a eucalyptus tree at the San Diego Zoo. Photo: Courtesy of San Diego Wildlife Alliance
Snugglepot and Cuddlepie were the first koalas at the San Diego Zoo in 1925, and those seem like the perfect names for these cuddly-looking creatures.
- Perched in their eucalyptus forest, the koala moms and their babies, called joeys, love to socialize.
- Visitors can see them in person or check out the koalas on a live cam .
Fun fact: This zoo has the largest koala colony and most successful breeding program outside of Australia.
Abeba, a baby dik-dik, is one of the newest babies at the zoo. Photo: Courtesy of San Diego Wildlife Alliance
Abeba, which means "flower" in Amharic, an Ethiopian Semitic language, was born in February 2024 to parents Chloe and Shaggy.
- Dik-diks are one of the world's smallest antelope species , growing to about 16 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing six to 14 pounds, according to the San Diego Zoo.
Fun fact: Dik-diks' noses are prehensile, meaning they can grasp and pull leaves and stems from plants to eat.
At the Safari Park

Meet Upepo, the newest okapi calf at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park .
- Usually found in the dense rainforest in central Africa, wildlife care specialists say he’s spunky and curious and has quite the appetite.
Fun fact: The black and white stripes might make the okapi look like some type of zebra, but the okapi is the only living relative of the giraffe.

The Safari Park's Sumatran tiger cubs , Puteri and Hutan, stepped out of their den for the first time in October 2023.
- Born in July, they were the first cubs of their species born at the Tull Family Tiger Trail habitat in seven years.
Threat level: Only an estimated 400 to 600 of the critically endangered Sumatran tigers remain on Earth, according to the zoo.
Tree-kangaroos
San Diego Zoo Safari Park celebrated a conservation milestone with the birth of this endangered Matschie’s tree kangaroo. Photo: Courtesy of San Diego Wildlife Alliance
This endangered Matschie’s tree-kangaroo named Kikori was born at the Safari Park last summer, when she was about the size of a jellybean.
- Baby tree-kangaroos, called joeys, crawl into their mother’s pouch to eat and grow until they’re about six months old. They pop their heads out at about seven months old.
The intrigue: Matschie’s tree-kangaroos are native to Papua New Guinea, and they can sometimes be found in Australian rainforests.
- As their population declines, there are fewer than 2,500 adult Matschie’s tree-kangaroos left in their native habitats, according to the Safari Park.

If you visit: The San Diego Zoo is located in Balboa Park, minutes from downtown San Diego.
- Tickets start at $67 for adults and $57 for children ages 3-11.
- Parking is free in the lot in front of the zoo and throughout Balboa Park, including Inspiration Point where you can catch a ride on the free shuttle.
- Check out the map of the 100-acre park.
Worthy of your time: Check out the zoo’s Safari Park less than an hour away in Escondido. You can hop in a covered, open-air safari truck for an up close and personal experience with African rhinos, giraffes, elephants, lions and other animals.

Kris jenner's sister, karen houghton, dead at 65, kris jenner's sister karen houghton dead at 65 ... kris pays tribute, exclusive 2.1k 3/19/2024 10:17 am pt.
12:14 PM PT -- The San Diego County Sheriff's Dept. tells TMZ that a call came in for medical aid around 1:30 PM PT Monday -- and that when deputies arrived, fire officials were already providing lifesaving measures for Karen Houghton ... who sadly passed away.
Unclear what medical incident precipitated the call.
Kris Jenner 's sister, Karen Houghton, has died ... TMZ has learned.
Law enforcement sources tell us Karen was reported as deceased to San Diego County officials Monday in San Marcos, CA. The exact circumstances of her passing are unclear, but we're told county officials are attributing her death to natural causes for now.
Karen was Kris' only sister -- sharing parents MJ and Robert Houghton -- and was born three years after the famed momager. Karen and Kris grew up in San Diego together, living predominantly with MJ after her divorce from the girls' father.
Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ Kris is very upset over the passing of her sibling -- and is also concerned about Karen's mother and niece. This is MJ's first loss of a child, so obviously it's devastating. We're told the family at large is rallying around each other.
Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.
Kris addressed Karen's death on social media as well, with a sweet tribute that touched on their history and relationship ... remembering Karen fondly.
Despite the Kardashians' very public life, Karen has not played a major role in their reality TV fame ... as the sisters have had a somewhat complicated relationship over the years.
Karen went public with their issues back in 2014, alleging in an interview that Kris had changed since skyrocketing to A-list status. She also infamously weighed in on Kris' high-profile divorce from Olympian Caitlyn Jenner ... seemingly siding with her ex-in-law.
Then, in 2016, Karen made headlines for undergoing a five-hour facelift in order to look more like the Kardashian-Jenner matriarch -- ultimately pleased with the results, at the time.
A family truce seemed to be confirmed in 2019 -- when Karen and Kris posed for a photo with their mom MJ and their respective daughters, Natalie Zettel and Kylie Jenner , at Christmastime.
However, Karen hasn't been spotted with the family in recent years, having kept a low profile out of the limelight. She worked as a part-time nurse and an author before her death.
Karen is survived by her daughter -- who she welcomed with ex-husband Mark Zettel -- mother, sister and several nieces and a nephew. She was 65.
