BTS singer V shares jaw-dropping peek inside £51 million private jet

BTS's V gave fans an exciting peek inside his luxury private jet this week, when he shared photographs on Instagram before he left Paris to return to Seoul.

The Dynamite singer was joined by BLACKPINK's Lisa and actor Park Bogum on the return journey to Korea after Paris Fashion Week – and they certainly travelled in style.

The BTS star shared a photo of the jet on his Instagram story, before his departure on Monday.

The photos showed V posing in front of an expensive-looking Bombardier Global 6000, which according to businessinsider.com costs $62.31 million (over £51 million). The spacious aircraft features a fully functioning kitchen, Wi-Fi, TV monitors, air conditioning, and can seat up to 14 passengers.

Located at the back of the jet, there is also a private cabin with a bed, where V was seen lounging during the long flight.

BLACKPINK's Lisa, who also flew on the private jet, posted photos showing off the luxurious interior to her Instagram when she was flying to Paris. Lisa can be seen comfortably sitting in a plush leather chair inside the private jet.

The trio returned to Seoul after an eventful four-day trip to Paris Fashion Week, which included a visit to the Celine show.

During his trip, V kept fans updated with multiple Instagram posts detailing his visits to restaurants and other various areas of the city, such as parks and luxury boutiques.

The trio of Korean stars also made plenty of public appearances. Of course, the highlight of the visit was the fashion show - V and Park Bogum attended the Celine Men's Summer 2023 Fashion Show as special guests, and Lisa also attended the show as a well-known brand ambassador since December 2020.

After leaving Paris behind, the trio arrived back at Gimpo International Airport in Seoul on Tuesday following an almost 12-hour flight.

BTS' V shares why BTS flies private

BTS ' V spoke up on the real reason why the group flies private. 

On December 15's V Live, V shared, "Well..I'm speaking for all of us. We fly with private jets but in fact, we'd love to fly with commercial airlines. However, whenever we fly -short or long distance- there were people who knew where we were seated in advance. They would sit in front of us or right next to us, which made us a little uncomfortable. Well, to be honest, I wish they didn't do it. Yes, it scares me. Really."  

It has been said BTS flys commercial when they are traveling a long distance due to safety reasons. Fans are raising concerns for the safety of BTS regarding these "fans", also known as "sasaengs".

‘From USA to Brazil’ – The interior of BTS’s private jet unveiled today

After a successful performance in the u.s., bts has left for their next destination, brazil..

On the morning of May 24, a video was posted on BTS’ official Twitter page along with the short caption “ Let’s go to Brazil! “

It was a 29-second video filmed by J-Hope. There was something that caught his eyes before he got on the plane.

It was a mat with the words ‘LOVE YOURSELF: SPEAK YOURSELF PRIVATE JET SERVICES’.

J-Hope walked passed it and slowly went inside.

He also greeted the crew with joy.

Inside the plane, the members were either looking for seats or eating salads. 

J-Hope found his seat, turned the camera in his direction and greeted Army. The video ends after that.

The private jet is often used by BTS because it saves more flying time and they can relax to the fullest.

Meanwhile, 375 tons of equipment have been transferred from the U.S. to Brazil for this concert of BTS.

This enormous equipment has been moved from JFK airport four times. It was moved to the stadium where the concert takes place by 40 trucks.

During this tour, BTS has improved the perfection of their performance with colorful stage equipment. Everyone is looking forward to their concert in Brazil.

BTS arrive in London in style as they fly into Europe on private jet

K-pop superstars BTS arrived in the UK in style.

After conquering the Citi Field stadium in New York and drawing more than 40,000 fans, the idols flew to London aboard a private jet and BTS ARMYs say they truly deserved it for all their hard work.

BTS wrapped up the North American leg of their Love Yourself world tour and are now in London for their sold-out concerts tonight and 10 October at the O2 Arena.

An official picture showed RM, J-Hope, Suga, Jin, V, Jimin and Jungkook on the stairs of a jet, wearing jackets and sweatshirts, perfect for the chilly London weather. They arrived arrived in the UK Sunday night.

This is BTS’ first ever visit to the UK. Besides the concerts, they will also be performing their record-breaking single IDOL on BBC’s The Graham Norton Show on Friday night.

After seeing the picture of the band’s suave arrival, fans said they deserved the luxury treatment.

Fans commented: ‘High class men getting what they deserve’; ‘They better be flying private everytime now! It’s what they deserve’; and ‘Is that private????? Freaking LEGEND!!! I think they’ve been flying private plane during their tours!’

Others said: ‘Another airport win for @BTS_twt. Flying in private jets, THIS IS WHAT KINGS DESERVE,’ while another wrote:  ‘It’s what they deserve. Hope they use private jet till the last leg of the concert. No mobbing on airport or sasaengs during flight to worry about.’

‘They look cold but still fashionable af. Welcome to england!!’ one comment read, while another wrote, ‘@BTS_twt need to fly only on private jet, for their comfort and safety. Such a relief.’

And while BTS are in the London, UK ARMYs are raising funds for Fare Share, ‘UK’s largest charity fighting hunger and food waste.’

BTS UK ARMY UNITE and One In An ARMY collaborated to celebrate BTS’ performance in London.

Diddy 's homes were raided in the U.S. to kick off the week -- but the guy's own private jet is miles away in a completely different nation ... although it's unclear if he's aboard himself.

TMZ has tracked Diddy's personal LoveAir LLC jet -- the well-known black Gulfstream 5 that Diddy has flaunted and flown for years now -- and it looks like the aircraft is currently on the ground in Antigua ... which is down in the Caribbean.

Based on the flight activity, viewed by TMZ, Diddy's jet has been up and down California between Sunday and Monday -- taking off from Sacramento Executive Airport Sunday evening around 5:30 PM PT and landing at Palm Springs Int'l Airport about an hour later.

An hour after that, around 7:30 PM PT, Diddy's jet took off from Palm Springs yet again and landed at Van Nuys Airport, which is in the L.A. area, about 30 minutes later around 8:00 PM PT. Around 9 AM PT Monday, the jet took off from Van Nuys airport and landed at some point in Antigua.

The plane is currently grounded there, although the flight data has yet to update and register him as having officially landed. In any case, it's definitely Diddy's jet ... no question.

The only thing that remains unanswered is whether Diddy is on the plane -- we don't have any evidence he is at this point ... and we also don't know what's happening on the scene.

As we reported ... two of Diddy's homes, in L.A. and MIami, were swarmed by federal law enforcement agencies Monday -- and armed officials stormed the properties, taking some people into custody ... including his sons Justin and King . Unclear if any arrests took place.

The raids are believed to have stemmed from accusations hurled at Diddy in multiple lawsuits -- which have touched on alleged human and sex trafficking, among other claims ... all of which he's vehemently denied.

We've reached out to Diddy's rep and lawyers ... so far, no word back.

TWICE Had A Private Jet And Here’s What It Looks Like

To accommodate TWICE ‘s incredibly busy schedule, they were given a privately-chartered jet to ferry them from back and forth between Japan and Korea.

In addition to performing at the SBS Gayo Daejun , KBS Gayo Daechukje , and MBC Gayo Daejejeon , TWICE also became the first Korean idol group in 6 years to be invited to perform at Japan’s prestigious NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen , the country’s iconic year-end song festival.

After practicing their performance of “TT” in Japan for the  Kōhaku Uta Gassen , TWICE flew back to Korea to perform live at the  KBS Gayo Daechukje , where they performed 5 songs! And almost immediately after that, they were flown back to Japan to prepare for their debut at Japan’s most prestigious television event.

After seeing the photos of the private jet, fans did a little research and concluded that they had chartered a Korean Air Business Jet.

Photos from Korean Air’s official website seemed to be identical to the photo TWICE had shared.

And even the private plane’s pilot confirmed how busy TWICE is. In an Instagram post, pilot Seo Ho Seung had nothing but praise for TWICE, referring to them as the busiest people from Korea.

In addition to performing at all the year-end music shows, TWICE’s success in Korea and Japan speak for themselves. TWICE recently broke the record for the most music show wins ever by a group, winning awards with “Knock Knock,” “Signal,” “Likey,” and “Heart Shaker.”

All the Ways to Fly Private, Starting at $100 Per Flight

Private jet travel took off in a big way during the pandemic. Flying private, which has long been viewed as a swanky, sometimes out-of-reach indulgence, suddenly became much more attractive in the era of social distancing. And as a flurry of new players entered the market in response to demand, the prices, long considered sky-high, became more accessible as well.

These days, relaxing in privacy at 35,000 feet no longer requires access to your own personal G5. There are now dozens of options for travelers looking to take to the skies in seclusion, many of them with ticket prices that deliver less sticker shock than you might expect. And the fact that most services operate out of smaller airports and private terminals has become even more appealing since the start of the pandemic, increasing demand.

Air Charter Service, the world's largest private aircraft broker, saw its new clients increase 25 percent in 2021. Many of them made the leap to private because it offered a pathway to reunite with family, says Caitlin Uhlmann, CEO of the company's Chicago office. In 2022, one in four of those first-time clients went on to book again and are now repeat clients.

“Being in the industry over 12 years, I’ve never experienced the wave of new clientele and limited aircraft availability due to demand as I had in the last two years,” Uhlmann says. “It doesn’t seem that private travel will slow down in the near future.”

Learning to navigate the multitude of companies and different categories of private air travel—from fly-share services to fractional ownership—can feel overwhelming. Below is a primer on some of the ways to score a seat on a private aircraft. 

Charter open marketplaces

These days, all it takes is a strong Wi-Fi connection (and a handy app or two) to get yourself into a private plane. A number of newer services are connecting fliers directly with charter operators, allowing you to browse, book, and buy within minutes.

JetASAP , a free, self-service app that defines itself as an “Airbnb for air travel,” launched in November 2020, allowing fliers to secure and book private flights directly from their smartphones. There’s a free feature to search in both the app and website, and unlimited access is available for $79.99/month or $399.99/year. Fliers are never required to pay a commission—just punch in a flight request, which includes your airport of departure and preferred flight times. Live operators respond with quotes and can answer any questions, and members get access to an exclusive list of more than 1,000 bookable daily trips.

Another newcomer to the private aviation sphere,  FlyJets  debuted in January 2020. The platform operates like a travel search engine, allowing customers to filter results via their preferred aircraft size, location, and desired departure time. An app, with features including automated scheduling, is set to debut before the end of 2022. Prices can be as much as 50 percent lower than the costs of an average charter, and booking options include full charters, seats on shared charters, and group-purchases. Travelers can even bid on flights that lack a fixed price. They can also earn rewards for flying green, with carbon offsets delivered directly to their user dashboard.

Flyjets enables users to sort results by preferred aircraft size and desired departure time.

Traditional chartering services

If you want to get in the air without strings attached, but need a little more guidance in which plane to choose, charters are a great option. Charter companies work with dozens of private air operators to locate your ideal flight and manage door-to-door logistics, with no long-term commitment required. Many also offer the option to purchase a jet card, which you can load up either with a fixed number of flight hours or with money you spend like a debit card. The field is a crowded one: along with Wheels Up and Blade, there’s also Air Partner, Private Fly, and Jettly, among others. 

Founded in 2019, Aero offers white-glove service on a fleet of sleek 16-seater black jets. The company flies to Aspen, Colorado; Los Cabos, Mexico; Sun Valley, Idaho ; Los Angeles (Van Nuys and LAX); San Francisco ; London ; Ibiza; and Nice, France . Flights to Switzerland are coming at the end of 2022. Tickets on most routes run $1,000 per leg.

Blade  is a popular choice for city-based travelers. It connects fliers not just with jets but also turboprops, seaplanes, and helicopters in their contracted fleet via a user-friendly app. Its Blade One planes offer seasonal service from  NYC  to  Miami , Palm Beach, and Aspen. A jaunt from NYC to Miami on BladeOne starts at $2,975 per leg. There's no membership required and fliers can purchase multipacks of flight passes on certain routes.

Founded in 2013,  Wheels Up  provides access to more than 1,500 aircraft, with a fleet that includes gold-standard planes like the King Air 350i and Citation X. Initially, its offerings were only accessible via three tiers of membership. But late last year, it rolled out the Wheels Up app, which also allows non-members to browse and book one-off flights. Wheels Up Connect memberships have a $2,995 initiation fee plus annual dues of $2,495, and rates jump up from there. Core memberships, which cost $17,500 plus $8,500 in annual dues, include guaranteed access to certain tiers of aircraft plus access to bespoke partners like Abercrombie & Kent, Hertz, Tropic Ocean Airways, and more.

Fly-sharing

Fly-share companies are the easiest on the wallet. Companies like Surf Air , and JSX enable travelers to snag a coveted seat on a private jet charter—sometimes for as little as $100 each way—sharing space with only a handful of other passengers and enjoying perks like no security lines and departure from  private terminals . Here's an in-depth  breakdown of popular fly-share operators  and what each one offers.

JSX, a semi-private carrier, offers flights on 30-seat jets, out of private terminals, starting at $249 each way. The company currently serves 18 markets including Austin, Texas ; Los Angeles ; Miami ; and Westchester County, New York. Thanks to a new partnership with United Airlines, travelers can earn United MileagePlus miles for their flights.

Wheels Up offers three tiers of membership.

Membership programs 

For more frequent fliers, membership programs can be attractive. Through tiered subscription programs, you’ll pay a monthly or annual fee that unlocks access to an entire fleet of aircrafts that can then be booked on demand. 

Interest in this company is skyrocketing—new client memberships are at the highest they have ever been, and sales in the first months of 2022 were up 185 percent from the same period in 2021. VistaJet’s fleet of silver and red aircraft includes corporate jets and the long-range Bombardier Global 7500, which has a bedroom and full-size kitchen. Membership options include VistaJet VJ25, a three-year private flight subscription for those who fly between 25 and 49 hours per year.

With a $100 monthly membership fee and one-way flights starting at $750,  Set Jet  is one of the most affordable private air travel options on the market. Founded in 2014, the West Coast-based company currently offers domestic routes from  Los Angeles , San Diego , Orange County, Scottsdale , Las Vegas , San Francisco , and Cabo San Lucas, with seasonal charters to Aspen and Salt Lake City . And it’s growing fast—its fleet of Bombardier aircraft will soon also be taking off from  New York , with expansions into Florida and Texas also in the works. It offers good news for spontaneous travelers, too: Set Jet members can book a new flight up to 24 hours before takeoff and snag a seat on an existing flight up to 30 minutes before wheels go up.

One of the largest private aviation firms globally, XO Members and clients have access to more than 2,450 private jets across cabin classes. Seats or entire charters can be booked via the XO mobile app. XO Shared Membership is $595 per year, reducing the seat price for every booking including flights between New York and South Florida that are now offered up to four times daily, seven days a week.

Sentient Jet

Sentient Jet is the inventor of the Jet Card, which allows users to buy 25 hours of flights at a time and choose the aircraft size that fits their needs. The SJ25 Card offers access to light aircraft at a price of $174,375 for 25 hours; SJ25+ gets you 25 hours on mid, super-mid, and large-cabin jets for $224,622.

Magellan Jets

This Boston -based private aviation provider also offers charters, but an easier entry point is their membership program. Explorer100 Private Jet Members receive fixed-rate pricing across four cabin-size categories. With a starting account of $100,000, members receive a 12-month rate lock, guaranteed WiFi on flights, and long-leg/round-trip discounts.

Fractional ownership 

With fractional ownership, your piece of the pie is allocated in hours. Owners purchase a portion or share of an aircraft, which is doled out in hours of flight time. The bigger the share, the more hours you get in the air; and unlike membership programs, it's a one-time investment. Companies like NetJets , the granddaddy of private aviation companies, and Flexjet , whose young fleet includes Embraer's super-light Phenom 300 and the ultra-long-range Gulfstream G450, offer ownership starting at a one-sixteenth interest in an aircraft. Buyers should still be prepared to shell out at least $500,000 and often much more.

Diddy’s Private Jet Goes Off Radar After Being Traced to Antigua Amid Armed Agents’ Raids on His L.A. and Miami Homes

When federal agents were raiding the Los Angeles and Miami homes of Sean “Diddy” Combs on Monday, March 25, the disgraced music mogul was nowhere in sight. Left to face the law enforcement personnel searching the L.A. home were his sons, Justin , 30, and Christian , 25, while Diddy’s private jet apparently had left the country.

The search by federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations was conducted in connection to allegations of sex trafficking , sexual assault, and involvement in the solicitation and distribution of illegal narcotics and firearms. The warrant for the raid originated from the Southern District of New York, NBC News reports.

While multiple men were detained and placed in handcuffs on Diddy’s properties, noticeably missing was the 54-year-old music exec himself. In an attempt to solve the mystery of Diddy’s whereabouts, an X user began tracking a $60 million blacked-out Gulfstream G550 jet .

Using flight tracking software, the X user by the name of @mvz77dallas was able to locate Diddy’s aircraft, tail number N1969C, just north of Puerto Rico at around 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The flight number revealed the plane was registered to LOVEAIR LLC and operated by luxury private jet company Silver Air.

“@Diddy Gulfstream G550 (N1969C / SIS69) departed LAX earlier today. Destination unknown. Currently flying at 42000 feet north of Puerto Rico,” tweeted the X user.

At around 6:05 p.m. ET, the aircraft was spotted near Barbuda before turning and doing a 180 loop to Antigua.

“UPDATE @Diddy Private Jet (Gulfstream G550 N1969 / SIS69 ) departed Van Nuys airport earlier today now descending to land at remote airfield in Barbuda,” the X user tweeted in his update.

The X user clarified in a follow up tweet, “FYI it was difficult to figure out his exact landing spot due to the aircraft’s erratic descent. I thought he was landing at Barbuda’s, but turned and did a 180 loop to Antigua at about 2,200 feet. Also, the aircraft turned off its radar signature within seconds of touchdown.”

It is unclear whether Diddy was aboard the private jet when it landed in Antigua.

Social media responded to the possibility of the “THE LOVE ALBUM : OFF THE GRID ” rapper getting out of dodge during the federal investigation and not taking his sons along.

“Fled and leaving your kids in the house that’s being raided is crazy,” one comment read .

“Leaving your kids behind is so dirty,” said another .

Some assumed Diddy was tipped off and fled to a country that won’t send him back to face his alleged crimes.

Antigua and Barbuda, the twin-island nation that Diddy is believed to have gone to, is a small country in the Caribbean, near the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

If he had been the subject of an arrest warrant instead of a search warrant, that nation might not have exempted him from extradition to America.

According to the U.S. State Department, the nation entered into an agreement in 1981, following its independence from the United Kingdom, to work in partnership together regarding some matters of law enforcement.

“Antigua and Barbuda’s location close to the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico makes it an attractive trans-shipment point for narcotics traffickers,” the State Department reports . “To address these problems, the United States and Antigua and Barbuda signed a series of counternarcotic and anticrime treaties and agreements, including a maritime law enforcement agreement subsequently amended to include overflight and order-to-land provisions, a bilateral extradition treaty, and a mutual legal assistance treaty.”

Diddy has been the subject of a federal investigation since November and has faced a wave of lawsuits filed against him, particularly concerning his role as a powerful fixture in entertainment. With power, the lawsuits suggest, also came abuse.

One example was a lawsuit filed by his former girlfriend Cassie under the New York Adult Survivors Act, which accused him of long-term physical and sexual abuse. Her lawsuit originally asked for $30 million and was settled in less than 24 hours for an undisclosed amount.

The lawsuit ticked off a legion of other filings — leading to the aforementioned raid.

Amidst the raid, Cassie’s lawyers have released a statement saying, “We will always support law enforcement when it seeks to prosecute those that have violated the law. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a process that will hold Mr. Combs responsible for his depraved conduct.”

Fans then began claiming that Lisa had invited BTS V and actor Park Bo Gum to fly to Paris, France, using her own private jet. The three traveled to Paris together to attend Celine's show for the Men's Paris Fashion Week, where V and Park Bo Gum were invited by the brand's artistic director Hedi Slimane. At the same time, Lisa is the luxury brand's global ambassador.

Attention on the issue grew as American media outlet Clout News shared the claims on social media. However, several Korean media outlets, such as SBS News  and Sports Chosun , have confirmed that these claims were false.

According to the two media outlets, the private jet was provided by Celine for Lisa, V, and Park Bo Gum.

However, it remains unclear why Josh Jung made the initial claims. He even shared a photo of Lisa posing next to the private jet provided by Celine on his Instagram account with the comments section closed.

Celebrities are regularly getting criticized for racking up CO2 emissions by using their jets as casually as most people use their cars — but it's not just famous fliers opting to go private.

Last month, social-media users called out Taylor Swift for her frequent private jet trips (even if some of the flights may not be what they seemed ). Stars like Kim Kardashian and Kyle Jenner have also been roasted for years over their private jet usage.

But according to travel industry data, private jet bookings are up — meaning even people who aren't necessarily own-your-own-private-jet rich are also avoiding commercial flights.

Surveys conducted by First in Service, a New York-based travel agency, found a 12% increase in private jet bookings in 2023 compared to the year prior, according to Travel Weekly . The surveys also found business class bookings had risen 18% over the same time period.

Fernando Gonzalez, CEO of First in Service, told the outlet the data showed travelers want "personalized, comfortable and exclusive experiences." Travel advisors with First in Service said the private-jet travelers were typically people with a high net worth and a busy schedule.

Private jet travel is more popular than ever, accounting for one in every six flights managed by air-traffic controllers in the US, Business Insider previously reported. And despite the fact that most Americans will never fly private, they are actually subsidizing private jet travel in the form of commercial flight taxes and FAA funding that goes toward small airports.

"It's not luxury that has no impact on the rest of us — it has a huge impact," Chuck Collins, the director of the Program on Inequality and the Common Good at the Institute for Policy Studies, told BI's Eliza Relman of private-jet travel.

Still, despite all the attention and outrage directed at popular female celebrities and their jets, they are not the majority of private jet travelers.

In fact, the average private jet owner is a 50-year-old man who works in finance or real estate and has a net worth of over $190 million.

Rapper Diddy’s alleged “drug mule” was arrested at a Miami airport after federal agents raided the singer’s Florida and California homes.

Brendon Paul, 25, was arrested Monday at Opa Locka Airport after the feds intercepted a private plane he was about to board with Diddy.

He was booked on one count of possession of suspected cocaine and suspected marijuana edibles, according to a police report obtained by The Post.

Diddy was spotted at the same airport at 3 p.m. Monday talking on his phone and pacing, pictures showed.

He has not been arrested or questioned by federal authorities at this stage.

The drugs were found inside Paul’s travel bags, according to the arrest paperwork.

He was arrested after tests confirmed they were narcotics and the report said he has since been bailed out of jail.

The federal officers who found the drugs in Paul’s bag were working in conjunction with Homeland Security — which raided Diddy’s homes on Monday — and Border Patrol. 

Paul was alleged to be a “drug mule” in  Rodney Jones’ lawsuit against Diddy , whose real name is Sean Combs.

The lawsuit alleges Paul “acquires and distributes Mr. Combs guns and drugs.” However, the alleged drugs found in his bag Monday have not been linked to the rapper.

Combs has vehmently denied all the allegations against him on social media and in a statement through his lawyer.

Following Paul’s arrest and the raids, it is not believed Diddy left the country.

• The woman, listed as Jane Doe in the lawsuit, claimed that a couple of days after the assault, Combs came to the home where she and her friend were staying and violently attacked her.
• In December 2023, Combs was hit with a fourth sexual assault lawsuit that accused him and others of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl at his NYC recording studio after drugging her and supplying her with alcohol.

At the time of Paul’s arrest, they had been boarding a different private jet than Diddy’s main one, which had flown from Los Angeles to Antigua in the Caribbean on Monday without him aboard. 

At least four people have been interviewed by agents regarding sex-trafficking claims made against Diddy and more interview are expected,  according to Rolling Stone .

Homeland Security Investigations Human Trafficking Task Force raided his homes Monday after a search warrant was issued by the Southern District of New York, sources told The Post.

“Earlier today, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York executed law enforcement actions as part of an ongoing investigation, with assistance from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami, and our local law enforcement partners. We will provide further information as it becomes available,” HSI told The Post.

Combs came under fire last year after his ex-girlfriend Casandra Ventura sued him, alleging she experienced years of sexual abuse from the rapper.

The case was settled the day after she filed.

In recent months, Diddy has been hit with other lawsuits accusing him of sexual abuse, which he has also denied.

“Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday. Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged. I will fight for my name, my family and for the truth,” he wrote on Instagram.

See what’s fueling the return of supersonic passenger flights

More than two decades after the concorde’s last flight, several private companies are competing to bring supersonic travel to the masses.

In January, more than 100 people gathered at an airplane hangar in California to watch NASA unveil its X-59 demonstrator jet — a futuristic aircraft designed to travel faster than the speed of sound that has helped revive excitement for supersonic travel.

There hasn’t been a commercial supersonic passenger jet since the Concorde stopped flying in 2003. Since then, supersonic jets — which travel faster than the speed of sound — have been used primarily by the military. But the space agency’s unveiling of the X-59, designed and built in partnership with Lockheed Martin, comes as a growing number of private companies are vying to bring back supersonic travel for the commercial market.

Boom, Exosonic and Spike are among the companies promising modern supersonic travel that will be quieter, greener and more affordable than in the past. And at least one company — Hermeus — is exploring hypersonic flights, which would whisk passengers from New York to London in 90 minutes. But there are questions about whether these companies can make good on their claims given the economics of air travel and growing concerns about the impact of commercial aviation on the environment.

Here are five things to know about the effort to revive supersonic travel.

1. The sonic ‘boom’ could become a ‘soft thump’

NASA’s goal in developing the X-59 is to reduce the sonic boom — the thunder clap that resonates far and wide when an aircraft crosses the sound barrier. NASA scientists hope the demonstrator jet can prove that travel at supersonic speeds is possible without such earsplitting noise.

One key to quieting the boom comes from the plane’s design. The engine is mounted on top. The plane has a long, narrow nose and sculpted wing to help ensure the shock waves it creates as it speeds through the air are similar in strength and evenly spaced along the aircraft to create a gradual increase in pressure instead of the rapid jump that creates the loud bang, said Peter Coen, mission integration manager for the Quesst mission.

The sonic boom is around 105 PLdB, or perceived level of decibels, similar to that of the sound of a balloon popping next to you. In comparison, NASA says the X-59’s will sound closer to a car door slamming 20 feet away.

Turning the boom into a “soft thump,” as NASA hopes, could also improve the economics for commercial supersonic flights. It could mean an end to the U.S. ban on supersonic travel over land, which was enacted over noise concerns. That in turn could make commercial supersonic travel financially viable because airlines would be able to fly supersonic planes to more destinations.

Designing and building the X-59 took roughly five years. Testing is underway, and other phases of the project are expected to take another four. The total projected cost is $839 million, according to NASA.

2. There’s a flurry of interest from private companies

Nearly a half a dozen companies are competing to be the first to offer supersonic travel to the public — a curious interest at a time when much investment and innovation in transportation is focused on developing cleaner, more climate-friendly options that consume less fuel or alternative propulsion technologies such as batteries or hydrogen.

Denver-based Boom Supersonic is eyeing 2029 for the debut of its supersonic passenger jet, called Overture. The aircraft is expected to seat 64 to 80 passengers, according to Blake Scholl, the company’s chief executive. It will travel at Mach 1.7, or 1.7 times the speed of sound — more than twice as fast as a regular passenger airplane .
