Croatia Luxury Cruises

Straddling two eras, croatia has one foot in the past yet its sights are very firmly set towards the future..

Flanked by coastal towns that look like something from the middle ages (they probably are), and bordered by the stunning Adriatic Sea, Croatia is well-aware of its picture postcard perfection. Yet scratch the surface and you’ll find a very modern mindset; one where traditional values are still upheld, local culture is highly respected and ecology is highly protected. Despite growing tourism, Croatia has retained its regal dignity, and even hotspots such as Dubrovnik and Hvar have kept the authenticity of daily Croatian life. Small towns shine like jewels along the Dalmatian Coast and offer lucky visitors an even deeper look at what this pretty coastal country can offer. With exploration, education and inspiration all in its remit, if you have not had the pleasure of visiting Croatia, the time is now. Set sail on one of Silversea’s luxury Croatia cruises and you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Top lawyer falls from cabin balcony into sea on luxury cruise

A corporate lawyer who vanished on a Mediterranean cruise ship fell feet first from a cabin balcony into the sea, a court heard.

Nigel Blythe-Tinker, 72, former head of legal at gaming giant William Hill, went missing while on board the luxury cruise ship Seven Seas Mariner , the world’s first cruise liner to boast “all suite, all balcony” cabins , in July last year.

The High Court heard that the alarm was raised when Blythe-Tinker, who also had a stint as chairman of Ladbrokes’ multibillion-pound parent company GVC Holdings, failed to disembark the ship at Barcelona, though he was on board when it departed Marseilles the previous day.

His family made “desperate attempts” to make contact with him, after which staff on the ship found his cabin empty with his “clothes folded neatly on the bed”.

Following evidence from Blythe-Tinker’s daughters, judge Chief Master Karen Shuman declared that their father met his death after falling feet first into the sea from his cabin balcony in the early hours of July 22.

The court heard that Blythe-Tinker, who was originally from Worksop, Notts, had been married three times and has two adult daughters, Sophie and Claire Blythe-Tinker.

He had been in the process of moving back to England after a period living in Australia when he vanished.

The 709-foot, 48,000-ton ship is hailed online as “one of the world’s best all-inclusive cruise ships”, with individual balconies attached to each cabin.

The cruise liner, which carries 700 passengers and 445 crew, was en route from Marseilles to Barcelona on July 21 2023 when Blythe-Tinker, who had been in “constant contact” with his family, began to display unusual behaviour and send messages in which he “wasn’t himself”.

Blythe-Tinker had been renovating a house in England he had bought near to the home of his “close” cousin Andrew Gilling and had told Mr Gilling that he had been worried about having enough money to complete the project.

He told his cousin he had had “a suicidal thought” and also seemed confused in messages with other family members, his London-based daughter Sophie, a history and politics teacher, told the judge.

His family contacted staff on the ship and the onboard doctor was dispatched to check on the lawyer, who said he had “no suicidal thoughts” and was physically well apart from back pain.

However, when the ship docked in Barcelona on the morning of July 22 last year, Blythe-Tinker did not disembark and his cabin was empty.

The ship’s CCTV revealed footage of an object – which appeared to be a person – falling from the vessel near to Blythe-Tinker’s cabin balcony and hitting the water.

Sophie Blythe-Tinker brought a High Court application for an examination of the circumstances in which her father vanished, asking for a declaration that he was dead.

She told the judge that he had seemed “strange” in his responses to messages and emails shortly before his disappearance.

When he failed to turn up at Heathrow airport – where he had been due to fly after leaving the ship in Barcelona – his family panicked and made “desperate attempts” to find out where he was. They eventually learned from the cruise company that he had never disembarked at Barcelona.

He ‘wasn’t himself’

Giving judgment in the case and declaring the missing lawyer officially dead, the judge said Blythe-Tinker had been “an active 72-year-old” who “travelled extensively”.

However, he “wasn’t himself” and had become “increasingly abnormal” during his time on the ship, she said.

“I have viewed the video evidence,” she said. “Something descends from the ship at 4.28am. I’m prepared to accept that that was a body and the direction is consistent with it coming from the suite Mr Blythe-Tinker was in.

“The ship was miles from any port or land at the time.

“I’m satisfied on the evidence before me that Mr Blythe-Tinker died at 4.28 central European time by falling to his death from the ship that he was on,” the judge concluded.

Nigel Blythe-Tinker went missing while on board the luxury cruise ship Seven Seas Mariner - CHAMPION NEWS

We managed to stretch our $12,000 European vacation budget to cover first-class plane tickets and a 12-night cruise. Here's how.

  • Allie Hubers, a freelance travel writer, spent $20,000 on cruises in 2022.
  • A two-week trip to Europe with her husband, which cost $12,000, was the most expensive one.
  • She breaks down all of the costs, including flights, hotels, the cruise, dining, and more.

Insider Today

This as-told-to story is based on a conversation with Allie Hubers , a 29-year-old freelance travel writer. It's been edited for length and clarity. Business Insider verified Hubers' expenses.

My husband Luke and I met in college at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota during our sophomore year. We have traveled together over the past 10 years, including trips to Europe , Asia, and Africa, and hopped on cruises around countries like Morocco, Thailand, Malaysia, Croatia, and Italy.

I'm a freelance travel writer, and Luke is a pilot with the US Air Force. He's been flying since he was 16. We both have high levels of wanderlust and traveling together is how we keep our marriage strong.

We allocate a budget to travel every month and our favorite way to travel is cruising . In 2022, we spent a total of $20,000 on cruises. The most expensive trip we went on was a 12-night cruise around Europe .

At the time, Luke had just returned from a months-long deployment, so we wanted to spend some quality time together. We had a $12,000 budget, which included the cruise , first-class airfare, tickets to an Ed Sheeran concert, and hotel stays. We had been saving for this trip for years. Here is a a breakdown of our budget.

Cost of plane tickets: $4,000

We spent $1,200 each on economy tickets with Delta Air Lines from Florida to London. We ended up upgrading to first-class Delta One the night before our flight. The upgrade cost $800 each. We hadn't taken a special trip together for years, so the splurge was well worth it.

This isn't standard for us, but an enticing upgrade offer was too tempting to turn down.

Cost of concert tickets: $476

Luke and I are big fans of Ed Sheeran . He was playing a set in Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. We snagged general admission tickets for around $116 each.

We both love his song "Tenerife Sea." When we first met in college, we added Tenerife — an island in Spain — to our bucket list. We ended up going to Tenerife during our 12-night cruise, and it was just as beautiful as the song made it out to be.

Related stories

We also got tickets for Imagine Dragons at the last minute, and those tickets were $244.

Cost of hotel stays: $621

During our trip, we stayed in four hotels. We spent two nights at The Edition, a five-star hotel near Soho in London . While a night's stay at The Edition costs around $670, we used 60,000 Marriott points each night and didn't have to pay cash.

We also spent a night at The Montcalm East Autograph in London for $350 and our last night at the Renaissance London Heathrow for $111 before flying back to the US.

To attend Ed Sheeran's concert, we spent a night at Newcastle Marriott Hotel Metrocenter, which cost $160. When we returned to London, we spent a night at Bankside Autograph Collection, a luxury hotel near the River Thames. A night's stay there costs around $600, but we used 45,000 Marriott points and redeemed our stay for free.

Cost of the 12-night cruise: $2,800

The 12-night cruise on Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas was $2,800 for the two of us. We initially booked an interior cabin , the cheapest room category, and ended up getting upgraded to an obstructed balcony room a few days before sailing. The upgrade ended up being free.

Stops along the cruise included Spain's Canary Islands, including Tenerife, and Lisbon in Portugal. We spent our days exploring new countries, having seaside cocktails, and reconnecting after so much time apart.

Cost of food and transportation: $2,055

We went on a three-night dining package for $240. On board the cruise, we purchased two specialty dining meals and on Chef's Table experience for $574. In total, including what we spent on food in London, we spent around $1,170 on dining out, coffee, and drinks.

Transportation took a big chunk of our budget. Ubers, taxis, and scooters cost a total of $528. We rented a car to get us to and from the concert venue for $186, with gas costing around $40. We also took the train to get around, and that amounted to $131.

Miscellaneous costs: $2,000

We spent $639 on souvenirs, gifts, and shopping . On board the cruise, excursions weren't free, so it cost us $214 for two excursions in the Canary Islands. Other expenses included internet on the cruise for $374 and roaming with T-Mobile for $103.

We also flew my sister to Florida to watch the dogs and provided her with a meal service for two weeks. That cost a total of $670.

There was no skimping or budgeting for this trip. We had no regrets about the money we spent on this cruise vacation.

A cruise ship carrying hundreds of passengers is stuck in the port of Barcelona after a group of Bolivian passengers were found to have visa issues, according to officials.

Authorities said 69 Bolivians are not being allowed to leave the liner as they do not have valid documents to enter the EU's border-free Schengen area.

There are some 1,500 passengers on board the luxury MSC Armonia, which had set sail from Brazil and was to continue through the Mediterranean Sea to Croatia.

Spanish government officials in Barcelona said they were in contact with Bolivian authorities and MSC Cruises to resolve the situation.

The Bolivians on board included families and children, MSC Cruises said in a statement.

It said: "The passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil.

"We have been informed by the authorities that the visas are not valid for entry into the Schengen area. As a result, passengers have not been able to disembark in Barcelona, which was their final destination."

Catalan newspaper Ara reported a Bolivian woman felt she was treated like "a criminal [in a] prison" despite claiming she paid for a visa from an agency which told her it was valid.

The newspaper also reported passengers claiming they had been allowed to leave the cruise in Tenerife without impediment, before being blocked in Malaga and eventually stopped in Barcelona.

The Schengen area is an ID check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries, most from the European Union.
