You can also reserve a comforter when you book your camper van, along with many other items that you can find on our  equipment list .

Important visa information

Please make sure you have the necessary visa before traveling. The following guide applies to all US and Canadian citizens:

  • US and Canadian residents only require proof of USA / CAN citizenship (Passport or NEXUS Card) when crossing the US / Canada border. For US citizens, no visa is required to enter Canada up until 180 days.

Best time of year to visit Los Angeles

You can enjoy a visit to Los Angeles year-round as the weather stays relatively comfortable. The summers can get quite hot, especially when camping away from the Pacific coast, so take that time for a relaxing couples beachside getaway or a more adrenaline-fueled surfing adventure with a close friend. Because of the extreme inland summer heat, roadsurfer camper van and Class C RV rentals are prohibited from visiting Death Valley except during the winter. Winters in LA are never really cold, but mountains like the stunning Sierra Nevadas, home to Yosemite National Park, can get much colder so plan your road trip accordingly. Spring and Autumn are the best times of year for a visit as the temperatures are comfortable, and the national parks are less crowded. If you plan on a longer road trip to other states, make sure to check their current requirements, like snow chains, which are not provided.

Filling and emptying water tanks in Los Angeles

When setting off on your journey, locating water fill-up stations for your camper van within the city of Los Angeles can be challenging. Once you are beyond the city limit, it will be much easier finding such stations. When returning your camper van or Class C RV rental, you must empty your black and grey water. The nearest service station is a short 15-minute drive away, where you can dispose of your grey water tank. Please note that this station has limited operating hours, typically open for only 2-3 hours per day.

  • Hyperion Dump Station , 7660 West Imperial Highway, Playa Del Rey, CA 90293

Due to the limited operating hours, we recommend staying at a campground that provides those facilities before finishing your road trip.

Gas stations near our Los Angeles station

Pease ensure the fuel tank is topped up shortly before returning your RV rental. Depending on the camper model, petrol or diesel and DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) are required. Please check in advance which fuel your camper requires. Failure to return the tanks full may result in a service fee. DEF is available at most Walmart and Target locations. These are the closest gas stations near our location:

  • MOBIL, 4750 W Rosecrans Ave, Hawthorne, CA. 90250
  • 76 Gas Station, 4773 W El Segundo Blvd, Hawthorne, CA 90250

Parking in Los Angeles

There is street parking available, but with regular street sweeping on Mondays and Tuesdays, it’s not the best option and not the safest. If you are looking to park your vehicle while you are on your roadsurfer adventure, you can find many long-term parking options at the Los Angeles International Airport, which is just a 15-minute taxi or ride-sharing car ride from our Los Angeles station.

Last-minute essentials in Los Angeles

Make sure to stock up on any last-minute essentials before hitting the road. If you are looking for groceries, there are several Ralphs grocery stores located within a 5 to 10-minute drive of the Los Angeles station. You can also find several Trader Joe’s around the greater Los Angeles area. For other general supplies, Walmart and Target are just down the road. It should be easy to find whatever you need around Los Angeles.

Coffee shops near our Los Angeles station

If you are in need of a bit of caffeine and food after your long travel journey before setting out on your roadsurfer adventure, there is a delicious French bakery and café called Le Pain Du Jour Bakery across the street from the Los Angeles station. It’s a great place to pick up some croissants and coffee to enjoy right away or take with you on the road.

Campgrounds near Los Angeles

There are plenty of campground possibilities near Los Angeles once you get just outside the city. If you plan on driving along the Pacific Coast Highway, you can escape the big city by staying at Malibu Creek Campsite in Malibu Creek State Park or Malibu Beach RV Park which is just off the PCH with stunning views of the pacific ocean, or stay within walking distance of the beach at Leo Carrillo State Park Campground. If you prefer to go hiking on trails like the Pacific Crest Trail, you can try Buckhorn Campground, or Manker Flats Campground, in Angeles National Forest. If a Disneyland visit is more your style, check out Anaheim Harbor RV Park. There are so many campgrounds to choose from but here are a few more we recommend:

  • Dockweiler RV Park – panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from Malibu to Catalina Island, plus great amenities and entertainment
  • Bonelli Bluffs RV Resort and Campground – near San Dimas and Lake Puddington Reservoir with beautiful mountain views
  • Rancho Oso RV and Camping Resort – beautiful scenery near Santa Barbara with a wide variety of entertainment activities
  • Sycamore Canyon Campground – no shortage of things to do in Point Magu State Park, from relaxing on the beach, hiking and mountain biking routes, as well as a 200-foot sand dune

Please be aware that campgrounds in and around Los Angeles, as well as throughout California, can become fully booked during peak seasons. To secure your desired campsite, we highly recommend making reservations up to 6 months in advance. This will ensure that you have the best chances of securing a spot for your road trip adventure.

The campervan rentals from Lost Campers include unlimited miles, and they even have an option for one-way rentals between Los Angeles and San Francisco . Unlimited miles are great, because you don’t have to worry about paying any extra fees when you return your van!

This is a great campervan rental company for anyone looking for a practical yet comfortable, ad-free campervan.

Vehicles on offer:

Lost Campers has 6 different sized vans in their fleet, from a 2-berth basic van to a 5-berth van large enough for the whole family.

All vans in the fleet come with a full-size mattress, bedding, camping equipment, and 24/7 roadside assistance.

Some of the vans like the Wanderer are more minimal, and perfect for travelers who enjoy camping, but would like to sleep inside a van.

Other vehicles in their fleet like the Sierra Class are a little more all-inclusive with electric coolers and a dual battery system so that you can power your electronics even while the van is off.

2. Outdoorsy - Largest RV rental marketplace in Los Angeles

  • Pick up/drop off location/s - Anywhere!
  • Price range - $-$$$
  • Best suited for - Anyone!

rent a travel trailer in la

Outdoorsy is different from every other RV rental in LA listed here. The reason why?

Rather than a rental firm, Outdoorsy is a trusted campervan and RV rental marketplace .

Outdoorsy is a platform where people can list their RVs and campervans on the market for people to rent! It’s a little like Airbnb for campervans!

You can book any type of campervan or RV through outdoorsy, and their in-platform delivery service means if you want a specific vehicle in a specific location, you can make it happen.

Outdoorsy only works with experienced, trustworthy van owners, and their million-dollar insurance policy protects not only the owners, but also the renters.

The opportunities with Outdoorsy are limitless.

For more information about this platform, check out our in-depth Outdoorsy review !

Outdoorsy has an extremely wide variety of vehicles available for rent on their platform.

It varies from year to year, but they currently have tons of awesome fully converted campervans and comfortable RV rentals.

For campervan rentals in LA, they currently have glamping, fully converted Sprinter Vans, 40-foot RVs, and more.

One of the best parts is that every van and campervan is unique in its own way, which will make your trip feel that much more personal in an Outdoorsy rental.

3. Travellers Autobarn - The best campervan rental in Los Angeles for fully converted campervans

  • Best suited for - Families and groups

Travellers Autobarn Campervan Rentals Los Angeles

Travellers Autobarn is a campervan rental company located in the western US that specializes in fully converted campervan rentals.

The campervans offered from Travellers Autobarn are all fully converted, with standing room and luxury amenities.

Travellers Autobarn caters to road-trip enthusiasts by providing unlimited miles, long-term rental discounts, and campsite discounts to their clients.

They also welcome younger clients with a minimum age requirement of 21, rather than 25 or 26 like many other companies.

Travellers Autobarn Campervan Rental Unit Los Angeles

Travellers Autobarn has three types of vehicles in their fleet : a minimal minivan, and two fully converted campervans, the Hitop and the Kuga.

The minivan is ideal for anyone who wants a car rental to take on their road trip with plenty of storage, and who has their own camping equipment.

For an additional fee, the minivan rental can come with camping equipment, as well as an air mattress to sleep on in the van.

While the minivan is a great budget option, the real prizes in this fleet are the two fully converted campers.

Each campervan has headroom, a convertible bed/table seating area, microwave, fridge, and auxiliary battery to have power off-grid!

The key difference between the two campervans is that the Kuga has a more recent interior build, as well as solar panels.

Meanwhile, the Hitop is about 5 years older, and the auxiliary battery can only be charged while driving or plugged into shore power.

This is a great option for anyone specifically looking for a fully converted campervan rental.

Los Angeles Campervan / RV rental FAQ

How much does it cost to rent a campervan or rv in los angeles.

You can expect to pay anywhere from $75-$300 a night renting a campervan or RV in Los Angeles.

I know that’s a huge price range, but it covers everything from a minivan with a bed and camping kitchen, to a luxury RV rental.

California is a very expensive state to travel in, and the thing to keep in mind when considering pricing is that a campervan/RV rental combines your transportation and accommodation costs into one!

So while these prices may sound expensive, it’s actually one of the most affordable ways to travel in California. You can choose to hire a car, as there are plenty of rentals in LA and other cities, but you'll then need to pay extra for accommodation.

How old do you need to rent a campervan or RV in Los Angeles?

For most campervan rental companies in LA, you need to be at least 25. However, there are  many rental firms on this list that will rent vehicles to drivers aged 21 and up.

Where can I park my campervan/RV rental?

You can park your campervan/RV rental in any campsites that allow parking, as well as RV parks.

California also has a ton of wilderness camping on BLM land that is free, but you will potentially need 4WD to get to some of the areas.

Truck stops are a great option for free overnight parking, as are any Native American-owned casinos.

Is renting a campervan/ RV in Los Angeles worth it?

The answer to this question is a resounding YES! From Highway One, to exploring the Sierras, beach towns, and deserts, renting a campervan in RV is 100% worth it.

With a campervan rental in California, you’ll not only save money on accommodation, but you’ll also get to see and experience more than you would by booking hotels.

It doesn't matter how long your vacation is slated to be; you could spend every minute of the next year seeing something new and different in the City of Angels. For instance:

The Huntington is one of the world's greatest cultural, research, and educational centers. Inside the library is a collection of very rare books and manuscripts. This is one of the world's largest and most complete research libraries in the nation.

You will see some remarkable rare books on display, including the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, a Gutenberg Bible on vellum, a double-elephant folio edition of Audubon's Birds of America, and a huge collection of Shakespeare's early works. Also, within the walls of the Huntington is an art collection spread over four separate galleries. They contain one of the world's most comprehensive art collections.

Nature in Los Angeles

The botanical gardens surrounding the Huntington are made up of 120-acres of unparalleled beauty. They are composed of more than a dozen specialized gardens. The camellia collection is one of the nation's largest. If you visit this wonderland of culture, be sure to set aside several hours.

Runyon Canyon Park is a gorgeous 130-acre park located just two blocks from Hollywood Boulevard. It is just west of the 101 freeway extending north to Mulholland Drive. It is a prime example of an urban wilderness, perfect for a family hike.

From the walking/hiking trails of the park, you will be treated to several outstanding views of the Hollywood community, such as the Hollywood sign, as well as the Griffith Observatory, amongst several more special views.

There are several attractions just outside the LA area that are "must sees" while on your rental RV adventure. Here are just a couple:

Malibu Beach

This star-studded area is great for surfing, dining, people-watching, and shopping (be prepared to open your wallet widely). It is just a short 40-minute drive from L.A., and is easily reached by taking I-10 W to CA-1 N (Pacific Coast Highway).

Disneyland

Experience the "Happiest Place on Earth" when you visit Disneyland in Anaheim. It is just a short 30-minute trip going south on I-5.

RV Rental Prices in Los Angeles

From cheap campervans to luxury motorhomes—compare prices to find a vehicle that suits your budget and travelling style.

The cost of renting an RV in Los Angeles varies depending on the type of vehicle and rental company. The average daily price for renting an RV is around USD $175 per night. Prices range from an average of USD $88 for a pop-up camper to USD $308 for a Class A motorhome. For mid-range options, travel trailers average around USD $113 per night, and Class C motorhomes are about USD $212 per night.

These prices can vary based on the season, the length of the rental, and additional costs such as mileage, vehicle delivery and setup, and other services. Discounts may be available for longer rentals, and prices may be lower during the off-season.

One of the most important aspects of any motorhome vacation is choosing the right vehicle. Not all RVs are created equal, and there’s quite a variety in size, shapes, and specifications that you’ll need to consider when renting your rig.

Class A motorhomes are large, luxury-class motorhomes that usually include all the bells and whistles like kitchens, bathrooms, and a separate sleeping space. If you’re traveling with your whole family in tow, or simply like to enjoy the finer things while you camp, Class A is the way to go.

Class B motorhomes range from compact campervans to more high-end but smaller motorhomes. There is a lot of variation to Class Bs, but they are generally smaller and have less capacity for storing freshwater and wastewater.

Class C motorhomes are large and have a very similar layout to Class A motorhomes. The main difference is that class Cs have an over-cab area above the cockpit that usually acts as an additional sleeping area. Class Cs are also a bit lighter and more compact than Class As.

The cheapest time to rent an RV in Los Angeles is typically during the off-season. This period usually falls in the late fall and winter months, excluding holidays when rates might be higher due to increased demand. During these times, RV rental rates can be lower due to decreased demand, making it a more budget-friendly option for travellers.

Travel tips for Los Angeles

If you need to stick to a budget while travelling around Los Angeles, renting a motorhome is the perfect way to save some cash. Your transportation doubles as your accommodation, which gives you the freedom to explore all your whims without worrying about spendy hotel rooms each night. Here are a few other ways to save money on your campervan holiday in Los Angeles.

Book your motorhome in advance. To get the best prices and options, book your campervan as soon as your travel dates are solidified.

Compare prices between rental companies. Don’t get stuck paying more than you need to for your campervan rental. Use Camper Champ’s comparison tool to find the best deal.

Park at state and national parks. Private RV resorts may have more amenities, but they’re also more expensive. California’s state and national parks are more affordable, and the incredible views from the campsites are worth skimping on things like WiFi and seasonal pools.Saving money while camping at some of the state's most beautiful sites? It’s a win-win!

Choose your vehicle carefully. Do you really need the newest model with all the bells and whistles? If the answer is no, then save your money and opt for an older or smaller motorhome. In addition, smaller vehicles are easier to navigate on mountain roads, and a 4WD campervan can come in handy if you’re camping on the beach!

Los Angeles is known for its sunny disposition, and the mild year-round temps mean that there is no truly bad time to visit. That being said, once you get out of the city, the weather changes drastically depending on where you go. Consider the average temperatures of the seasons, and how your location can affect your experience.

Summer: There’s no better place to enjoy southern California’s beachy summer vibes than Los Angeles, but summer isn’t necessarily the best time for a motorhome holiday in LA. While the weather is great, with highs averaging around 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius), the nice temps coincide with school break. Big crowds descend on the city during the summer, and even the areas outside the city are more packed than usual at this time of year. If you plan on camping on the beach or in the mountains, be sure to reserve your spot well in advance. Note that Joshua Tree and Death Valley national parks should be avoided in the summer, as daily highs can peak well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius).

Autumn: Autumn is a great time to go campervanning around Los Angeles. The summer crowds have receded, making a little extra elbow room at the parks surrounding LA and in the city itself. Temperatures remain pleasant, averaging around 73 degrees Fahrenheit (23 degrees Celsius). This is the perfect season to hop in your motorhome and chase the beautiful fall foliage that peaks around October and November.

Winter: Winter in LA is surprisingly delightful. Despite a few locals regaled in down parkas and wrapped up in heavy scarves, most people find southern California to be quite mild during the winter months. Highs dip down into the mid 60s (around 20 degrees Celsius) for a few months, and this season does get more precipitation than the others. Places high up in the mountains even see snow in the winter, including Mount Jacinto. Other destinations are perfect for winter motorhome holidays. Joshua Tree and Desert Valley are a bit chilly, but there’s no better time for long hikes, and the crowds are sparse, too!

Spring: Springtime can be a hit or miss around Los Angeles. You’ll likely encounter a few rainy days, but when the sun shines and the wildflowers bloom you’ll be glad you chose the low season for a motorhome holiday around LA. Temps slowly begin to rise again, with highs averaging around 70 degrees Fahrenheit (23 degrees Celsius). Campgrounds that closed for the winter also start to open back up, so you’ll find plenty of spots to park the motorhome in the spring.

The length of your motorhome holiday in Los Angeles depends on how much you want to see and do. If you plan on visiting a nearby state park and hitting some of LA’s main attractions, a long weekend will suffice. If you want to go further afield and see more of the wilderness surrounding the city, plan to spend a couple of weeks on the road.

Parking an RV in Los Angeles

Strict overnight RV parking rules are enforced in the LA area. It’s important to know where you can and can’t park a campervan overnight in Los Angeles to avoid hefty fines and the risk of being towed.

Overnight street parking is allowed in a few selected areas , though these zones can be challenging to find. In addition, these areas are not always the safest or cleanest, and you may have trouble finding a spot amongst the more permanent RVs that park overnight on a regular basis. If you do decide to park on the street overnight, look for signs with specific parking rules, and be sure to buy a valid permit before hitting the hay.

A better option for overnight city parking is to find an RV Park . These are a bit of a hit or miss, and most are located in the suburbs surrounding Los Angeles. But if you want to be close to the city with amenities like WiFi, hot showers, and electric hookups, this certainly beats trying to find a spot on the street.

All you’ll need is a standard license to operate most motorhomes in Los Angeles and the greater U.S. A regular license allows you to drive most classes of motorhomes, including Class A, Class B, Class C, fifth wheels, and travel trailers.

In California, exceptions apply for vehicles weighing more than 26,000 lbs (including cargo), trailers over 10,000 lbs, vehicles longer than 40 feet, and Class A Motorhomes with air breaks.

You may need to check the fine print if you are travelling with a licence from outside the US. The general rule is that if you can operate a campervan in your country of origin with your licence, you can also do it in the U.S. Of course, you should always double-check the legalities before you begin your motorhome vacation so there are no surprises along the way.

Housing | California rent ‘bargains’ are disappearing. Which ones are left?

Cheapest is fresno. but its $1,327 rent is up 42% vs. 2017.

Jonathan Lansner

“How expensive?” tracks measurements of California’s totally unaffordable housing market.

The pain: Tenants will find dwindling cost advantages when choosing California’s cheapest places to rent compared with the state’s priciest spots.

The source: My trusty spreadsheet reviewed Apartment List’s rent data between January 2017 and March 2024 . It’s an interesting metric because it’s a mix of Census Bureau figures and results from the company’s own rental listings for 47 states, the District of Columbia, and 583 US cities – including 82 in California. (Yes, no Alaska, Maine or Vermont).

My spreadsheet created a rent “bargain” yardstick by splitting the 82 California cities into two groups.

For high-priced rents, we looked at what stat geeks call the “75th percentile” – the middle price of the 41 cities ranking in the upper half of rents statewide. That cost was compared with low-rent districts: the “25th percentile” – which is the middle rent for the cheapest 41 cities. (FYI: The often-used median is the 50th percentile.)

Back in 2017, there were 36% in rent savings between these measurements of California’s costliest and most inexpensive markets. That was $2,471 monthly rent in the upper half vs. $1,589 at the lower end. Or $882 potential savings each month between renting in a typical pricey California city vs. an “affordable” town.

  • HOW NIMBY ARE YOU? Ponder common objections to new housing. TAKE OUR QUIZ!

Next, we looked at today’s conditions – data for the 12 months ended in March 2024. The housing discount for renting in the Golden State’s less-costly communities fell to 22%. That was $2,748 in the most-expensive cities vs. $2,144 in cheaper ones. Or $604 monthly.

Or ponder the shrinking savings this way: Rents in California’s costliest half grew just 11% since 2017. But there was a 35% surge in the more “affordable” locales.

Why the narrowing gap? You can blame a population push away from the biggest metropolitan areas, mostly near the ocean, and toward lower-cost communities that are primarily inland. That’s the byproduct of remote workers departing job hubs and folks seeking cheaper housing.

Pressure points

Sadly, rent “bargains” in California – relatively speaking – are disappearing.

Think about California’s 10 “most affordable” communities and the hefty rent hikes found since 2017 …

Fresno: $1,327 average rent in the 12 months ended in March – up 42% vs. the 2017 average.

Victorville: $1,641 – no change data available.

Citrus Heights: $1,659 – up 38% since 2017.

Sacramento: $1,667 – up 30% since 2017.

  • REAL ESTATE NEWSLETTER : Get our free ‘Home Stretch’ by email. SUBSCRIBE HERE !

Santa Maria: $1,761 – up 52% since 2017.

Long Beach: $1,769 – up 19% since 2017.

Riverside: $1,810 – up 48% since 2017.

Pomona: $1,865 – up 31% since 2017.

Santa Rosa: $1,903 – up 18% since 2017.

Moreno Valley: $1,906 – up 48% since 2017.

Contrast those surges to what’s occurred in the state’s 10 costliest places to rent …

Calabasas: $3,302 a month – up 27% since 2017.

Newport Beach: $3,259 – up 27% since 2017.

Lake Forest: $3,169 – up 42% since 2017.

San Mateo: $3,137 – up 6% since 2017.

  • MORTGAGE NEWS: What’s up with rates? Who’s lending? CLICK HERE!

Dublin: $3,131 – up 6% since 2017.

Emeryville: $3,032 – off 4% since 2017.

Sunnyvale: $3,019 – up 7% since 2017.

Irvine: $2,983 – up 29% since 2017.

Redwood City: $2,980 – up 2% since 2017.

Santa Clara: $2,979 – up 16% since 2017.

Bottom line

California tenants also don’t fare well within the national picture.

The state’s $2,154 average rent in the 12 months ending in March was topped only by Hawaii’s $2,239. Rent nationwide ran $1,402 a month, by this math. That’s 35% cheaper.

But let me conclude with a dash of good news: California’s overall rents rose by 21% since 2017 vs. US rents that jumped 28% in the same period.

Only six places had smaller rent hikes since 2017 – DC at 5%, Louisiana at 11%, Minnesota at 14%, Iowa at 15%, Oregon at 16%, and North Dakota 17%.

Editorial: It’s not OK for special interests to use the California ballot to attack each other

How has California’s direct democracy system been misused to serve narrow special interests? In just the last few years, there was the billionaire venture capitalist with the harebrained idea that California should be six — no, three separate states . There was the labor union that spent millions of dollars on ballot measures — in three elections! — to punish the dialysis industry that wouldn’t fall in line.

There was the referendum by the plastic-making industry that tried to undo California’s ban on single-use plastic shopping bags. There was the politically motivated recall election of Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2021 that failed. And more recently Big Oil poured money into qualifying a measure for the November ballot to repeal a law banning oil drilling near schools and homes. These are just a few high-profile examples.

There are also dozens of failed attempts by those without the deep pockets or political organizational skills to gather enough signatures to qualify their idea (or obsession in some cases. Looking at you, ferret legalization guy ) for the ballot.

This was never the intention of former Gov. Hiram Johnson, who in the early 20th century pushed for a system allowing California voters to bypass elected officials to make or repeal laws, should lawmakers become beholden to special interests. Instead, the special interests themselves — rich individuals, industries, lobbying groups and labor unions, among others — learned they could use this citizen democracy tool as well, with the right investment.

Volunteer Merle Canfield assembles yard signs against the Sept. 14, recall

Editorial: California still hasn’t fixed its undemocratic recall rules

The latest attempt to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom is a reminder a governor could be recalled and replaced by someone with far less voter support.

March 19, 2024

While voters have mostly seen through self-serving ballot initiatives, the misuse of the ballot continues and recently reached a new high — or rather, new low.

Last month, the California Apartment Assn. turned in more than enough signatures needed to place a measure on the November ballot for which the sole purpose appears to be stopping one guy from putting his own measures on future ballots. This one guy is Michael Weinstein , president of the Hollywood-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation, who has used his organization’s resources to fund three rent control initiatives (two failed, the third will be on November’s ballot).

Weinstein says that this is clearly a measure intended to stop his efforts to expand rent control. And there are several reasons that support that assertion. The association’s members include apartment owners, managers and investors who are typically opposed to rent control for obvious reasons. The campaign site protectcapatientsnow.com is subtitled “Stop the Weinstein Scam.” The campaign video on the site features Weinstein as well, calling him a “predatory pharmaceutical middleman” and “slumlord.” (The AIDS charity has a problematic history as a landlord of Skid Row housing for homeless people.)

John Eastman testifies on Capitol Hill in 2017.

Editorial: John Eastman tried to help Trump overturn the 2020 election. Of course he should be disbarred

Legal scholar John Eastman earned his disbarment by the State Bar of California by pushing legal theories that went well beyond the very wide latitude given lawyers for their zealous advocacy.

And, its name not withstanding, the Protect Patients Now Act’s language seems tailored specifically to target the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. It applies only to healthcare providers that have spent more than $100 million in the last decade on anything not considered direct patient care and that operate multifamily housing with more than 500 high-severity health and safety violations. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation meets all of those criteria. Under the proposal, it would lose its tax-exempt status if it spends more than 2% of its revenue from 340B, a federal drug discount program, on anything other than healthcare.

Incredibly, the proponents insist that the measure is only about stopping abuse of the 340B program, which mandates that nonprofit healthcare providers serving low-income patients get discounts from pharmaceutical companies but are reimbursed for the full price of those drugs by public programs. The healthcare providers are allowed to use the difference to pay for other health services for their patients. Weinstein says that lack of affordable housing is a healthcare issue, therefore using 340B revenue to support tenant protection measures is allowable.

Editorial: Not everything should go to the ballot. Lawmakers, do your job

A November 2022 ballot cluttered with niche industry fights is not good for voters. Elected officials should use their power to broker compromises.

June 7, 2022

If there are problems with the federal drug discount program, the ballot is not the appropriate venue to resolve them. Besides, it seems clear that the 340B program is a straw man, even if nine patient groups have signed on to support it.

We don’t love the fact that a single person or entity with deep pockets — be it a lobbying group, tech titan or the head of a nonprofit — can use the ballot to pass laws that serve their own agendas, but California election law allows it. What it may not allow is for a ballot measure to target a single individual.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation has sued to block the Protect Patients Now Act, claiming it’s a violation of state law. If the judge in the case allows it to remain on the ballot (it’s not certain she will ) it will be up to voters, once again, to make sense of a murky, self-serving ballot measure.

This combination of 2003 and 2006 photos shows a northern spotted owl, left, in the Deschutes National Forest near Camp Sherman, Ore., and a barred owl in East Burke, Vt. Barred owls are native to eastern North America but began moving West at the turn of the 20th century. Scientists believe they migrated to western Canada across the Great Plains in the early 1900s, using forests that popped up as people learned to manage wildfires and planted trees around farms. They arrived in Washington in 1973 and then moved south into Oregon and California. (AP Photo/Don Ryan, Steve Legge)
