Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Top 10 iconic Thai landscapes

Whether you're traveling by tuk-tuk through the crazy streets, cycling along backroads, or taking a longtail through the khlongs, the journey in Bangkok is definitely half the fun. Drop into the stunning Grand Palace, see the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, and wind your way through floating markets.

Start and finish an incredible 30 day South East Asia Loop in the exciting epicenter that is Bangkok.

2. Chiang Mai

This northern capital is overflowing with experiences. Temple-hop through some - or all - of its 300 temples, take a cooking class to learn the secrets of Thai cuisine, and explore the Night Bazaar for delicious food, designer goods, and a foot massage to die for.

Experience the magic of Chiang Mai on our 4 day Chiang Mai Adventure

Choose your Ko Tao adventure on a 10 day Thailand Beaches: Bangkok to Ko Samui tour.

4. Hilltribe Country

Thailand's north is home to many of the country's minority groups. A hike along buffalo tracks will take you through colorful H'mong, Karen, and Lisu villages. Spend a night as their guest for a unique insight into their life.

Spend a night as their guest for a unique insight into their life on our 5 day Thailand Hilltribe Trek.

5. Ayuthaya

Modern meets ancient in Ayuthaya. The current city intertwines itself with the remnants of what was once one of Asia's great capitals. Walk the streets in search of clues to its imperial past and hire a bike to ride through the countryside, exploring the area's ruins.

Enjoy this historical park for yourself during a 10 day Highlights of Thailand tour.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

We've made sure to stop by Krabi on our incredible 28 day Bangkok to Bali adventure - you'll thank us later.

8. Golden Triangle

The area where the Thai, Laotian, and Burmese borders meet has long been associated with colorful cultures and illicit opium trade. The opium may have gone but the color hasn't and the markets offer all sorts of amazing local handicrafts.

Set your sights on this incredible part of the world on a 3 days Chiang Mai and Golden Triangle.

9. Khao Sok National Park

For a real jungle experience, spend a couple of days in Khao Sok National Park. Thick rainforests, limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and mountains make a wild playground.

Hike, swim, explore caves, and sleep to the sounds of exotic birds and animals during our 8 days Essential Southern Thailand trip.

10. Kanchanaburi

This tranquil town is the jumping-off point for visits to the infamous Hell Fire Pass and River Kwai. Be sure to take a ride along the tracks of the Death Railway and reflect on the atrocities of war at the Jeath War Museum.

Take a reflective walk through the history of Kanchanaburi on a 15 day Beautiful Northern Thailand tour.

7. Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognizable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQI travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Use reliable transportation options such as licensed taxis or reputable ride-sharing services. When exploring crowded tourist areas or markets, beware of pickpockets and keep your valuables secure.

December also happens to be the month when many of Thailand’s festivals take place. From the Loy Krathong festival, where people float lanterns in honor of the goddess of water, to the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

So if you’re looking for a unique travel experience, consider heading to Thailand in December. You won’t be disappointed!

What to Pack for Your Trip to Thailand in December

Thailand in December: Complete Travel Guide

Assuming you’re packing for a trip to Thailand in December, you’ll need to bring clothing that can accommodate the hot, humid weather.

  • Lighter fabrics such as cotton and linen are ideal, and you’ll want to avoid anything too tight-fitting as it will be uncomfortable in the heat.
  • A versatile sundress is a great option for daytime exploring, while a pair of shorts or a skirt with a tank top or t-shirt will work for evening activities.
  • For footwear, sandals or flip-flops are essential, but make sure they’re comfortable as you’ll be doing a lot of walking.

Thailand travel requirements 2024: What travelers need to know

We aim to keep this post updated about Thailand travel in 2024 with official Thailand travel restrictions, requirements, and health and safety guidance. Our goal is to help you make informed decisions so you can travel confidently, safely, and responsibly in this new post-pandemic world of ours.

Since travel restrictions can vary by citizenship, we will be focusing our post on rules that affect U.S. citizens.

February 2024: “My husband and I are in Thailand for a two-month stay. There don’t seem to be any travel restrictions. Tourism is running normally, but many people still wear masks, especially in places like the metro or on ferries. Some businesses and attractions have closed since Covid. If you have asthma or other breathing issues, watch the air quality index (The Air4Thai app works well.) and plan your trip accordingly.” –  Rachel Heller of World Heritage Net , Dutch traveler

At the end of the post, we share more on-the-ground perspectives from local residents and travelers to Thailand so you can get a sense of what to expect.

Table of Contents

Is Thailand open for travel? Can I travel to Thailand right now?

Thailand is currently open for foreign travelers.

As of October 2022 , proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test result are no longer required from travelers. In addition, proof of vaccination is no longer required to attend crowded events.

Travelers holding US passports can enter Thailand for tourism purposes without the need to obtain a visa for stays up to 30 days on each visit. Thailand temporarily extended this visa exemption to 45 days for arrivals previously. However, as of April 2023, visa-free entries has reverted back to 30 days.

Travelers can always extend the standard 30 days for another 30 days by applying at a local Immigration Office and paying 1900 baht.

Travelers from countries not on the visa exemption list must apply for a Special Tourist Visa (STV) to enter Thailand as tourists.

Thailand travel restrictions and limitations may sometimes apply only in certain regions. Monitor Thailand travel news here .

A new tourist fee will soon be required to enter Thailand, but the start date has been postponed as of December 2023. This fee will be built into plane ticket costs and is only about $9 US. There will be no payment on arrival if arriving by air, but it’s unclear how the fee will work at land and sea borders.

Quarantine rules in Thailand: What happens if I get Covid?

Travelers who test positive for Covid while in Thailand are asked to self-isolate for at least 5 days at the traveler’s expense. However, quarantine is no longer mandatory or being enforced.

Quarantine should end after taking a PCR test with negative result. Those with severe symptoms will be admitted to the hospital.

Can I travel to Thailand in April 2024? Can I travel to Thailand this Spring?

Travel to Thailand in April is open . Please read on for details and check back for updates.

What is it like to fly to Thailand BKK Suvarnabhumi Airport or DMK Don Mueang Bangkok Airport right now? Thai Airways reports that the face mask mandate has been relaxed. Airports can be busy at times and crowds may be difficult to avoid.

Do I have to quarantine when traveling to Thailand? No. See details above.

Does Thailand check COVID-19 symptoms of incoming travelers? Health checks are no longer common for incoming travelers.

Does Thailand require a negative Covid 19 test for travelers? No. As of October 2022, a negative Covid test is no longer required.

Does Thailand require a proof of Coronavirus vaccine for travelers? No. As of October 2022, a proof of vaccination is no longer required.

Do I still need to provide a negative Covid test or quarantine if I have been vaccinated? No. Travelers are no longer required to provide a negative Covid test or quarantine.

Is a booster shot required for travel to Thailand? At this time, booster shots are not required in Thailand. There is currently no expiration period set for the validity of vaccinations.

What Covid testing options are available for travelers in Thailand? PCR and antigen tests are available in Thailand. Foreign travelers can get a Covid test at the National Institute of Health, 14 Regional Medical Sciences Centers, and private hospitals in Thailand.

Covid PCR tests range from 2,500 to 10,000 Thai baht (approximately $74-$311). Test results are available within 72 hours. ATK tests are available for cheap at 711 convenience stores for 40+ baht.

See the list of Covid testing centers here.

What healthcare options are available to travelers in Thailand who get the virus? Thailand’s private healthcare services are generally very good. Hospitals and clinics in Thailand are open to foreign travelers.

Treatment for Covid-19 may cost more than 100,000 Thai baht. Travelers will pay for their medical expenses or use a travel insurance.

What service businesses and restaurants are open in Thailand? Restaurants, street food, malls, department stores, and other establishments are open in Thailand. Pubs, bars, karaoke outlets and other entertainment venues are now operating at their normal hours.

Are face masks required in Thailand? Wearing of masks is now voluntary in public and indoor places, except health care facilities. Some businesses may request face masks inside.

Are buses running in Thailand? Public transportation is available in Thailand. Masks are no longer required but still encouraged. A majority of riders still wear masks on public transit, especially in Bangkok.

Will Thailand impose new Covid restrictions? What’s next is difficult to predict. Historically, most countries impose COVID-19 restrictions when strains on the health care system might become unsustainable. Thailand has been relatively proactive when it comes to preventive Covid measures, balanced with the need to keep the tourism industry open.

How has the Coronavirus impacted Thailand?

Thailand reported its first case of Covid infection last January 2020. Although there have been outbreaks in the following months, Thailand was successful in containing the pandemic throughout most of 2020.

Unfortunately, in April 2021, the country experienced uncontrolled resurgence of infections, ranking Thailand fourth in the number of cases in Southeast Asia.

In response to the pandemic, preventive measures such as contact tracing, lockdown measures, and international travel restrictions were implemented. These slowed the country’s economy and Thailand’s tourist industry has been severely affected. Thailand’s State of Emergency ended September 30, 2022.

To revive tourism, the islands of Phuket and Samui reopened with a “Sandbox” program to vaccinated foreign travelers in July 2021. In October 2021, Thailand travel restrictions were eased for foreign travelers. In December 2021, the Test & Go program which allowed quarantine-free entry was suspended amid the spread of the Omicron variant.

In 2022, Thailand eased entry restrictions. The color-coded system, which placed limits on travel, dining, entertainment activities, and gatherings, has been removed.

Vaccinations in Thailand began at the end of February 2021. About 2/3 of the population have been vaccinated.

For the current situation in Thailand, including: total COVID-19 positive cases; total cases in Thailand; and COVID-19 testing in Thailand, please see the following Thailand Ministry of Public Health site and Facebook page .

What should you pack for safely traveling in Thailand?

😷 Face Masks – Face coverings are recommended in crowded public places. Find N95 masks at Bona Fide > or designer options at Vida >

💊 Medicine – Bring enough prescription and over-the-counter medication for your entire trip to avoid trips to the clinic.

💳 Vaccine Card Holder – Protect that paper CDC card when traveling abroad (if your country doesn’t offer a digital version). Get a simple plastic protector > or Vegan leather clippable > or Leather passport + card combo holder >

👃 Covid self-test – The most studied rapid antigen self-test with FDA emergency authorization.  NOT valid to enter countries. Use for your own peace of mind. Order from CVS > or Walmart >

💧 Sealed water bottle – Make sure your reusable water bottle has a lid that’s not exposed to the air. We use one of each of the following: Shop insulated water bottles with protective lid > Shop water bottles with purification filter and protective lid >

✈️ Travel insurance that covers Covid – We’ve started using Nomad Insurance by Safety Wing for affordable evacuation, international medical, and trip coverage.

What do Thai locals and recent travelers say about visiting Thailand now?

What is it like to visit Thailand right now? It’s our goal to provide regular updates here from real people on the ground, to help potential visitors know what to expect. The following are subjective opinions only. Official travel guidance can be found above.

September 2023 – Peta and Jonas of Exit45 Travels , Australian travelers:  “We are living a nomadic retirement and arrived in Koh Samui, Thailand, in July and are staying two months. Thailand, in general, is nearly back to pre-covid tourist numbers and you can feel an optimism in the air amongst the locals.

There are no travel restrictions here in Thailand, however, you will still see many locals wearing facemasks. Hospitals and some medical clinics are advertising Covid testing so it is accessible if required. There are certain tourist areas where you can visually see the aftermath of Covid i.e. deserted hotels that have fallen into disrepair, closed restaurants, etc., but in general, you will have no problems finding accommodation, restaurants selling great Thai food, massages, or shopping opportunities. It is now heading into the monsoon season here in Koh Samui so we have seen a huge reduction in tourists.”

May 2023 – Nat Deduck of Love and Road , Brazilian digital nomad: “I’ve been living in Phuket, Thailand for a year. Tourism in Thailand is back to normal, and apart from some Thais wearing masks, you probably won’t even remember that covid existed here. An interesting fact is that local Thais used masks way before the pandemic, so it’s a habit that got intensified after Covid.

Thailand’s tourism is in full swing. This high season (Dec-March) felt as busy as back in 2019 when we were here before Covid. Attractions, hotels, and places to visit are fully open and ready to service tourists.

Most tourists don’t wear masks, but if you feel the need to do so it’s available in every pharmacy, supermarket, and convenience shop. The same for the Covid tests, you can do it by yourself, or you can go to any clinic or hospital to do a PCR test if needed. Hospitals are back to regular services here in Phuket and Bangkok, my husband and I had to see a doctor and everything went smoothly. There was no restriction to be treated because of the pandemic, and no overflow covid cases.”

February 2023 – Michelle, Intentional Travelers, U.S. nomad: “We flew to Bangkok from Vietnam. Air Asia did not check our onward flight nor ask for any Covid documentation, only passports. Masking on the plane was not required but many wore face coverings, including all the crew.

Immigration wasn’t too long a wait at DMK in the evening. Just showed passport, boarding pass, took a photo, and fingerprints. At the moment, U.S. passports get 45 days in Thailand without a visa.

We later flew from Bangkok to Chiang Rai, took a bus from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai, and flew out of Chiang Mai to Vietnam . Thai airports were playing recorded announcements advising passengers to mask and socially distance, though it wasn’t enforced.

The entire building where we stayed in Bangkok required masks in common areas. On BTS public transit, an announcement is made in English that mask laws have relaxed but face coverings are still highly encouraged. At least 90% of passengers wear masks on public transit.

In Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, we also saw notices recommending Covid precautions at certain establishments, many had hand sanitizer available at the entrance, however, we didn’t encounter any strict requirements.

Thailand seems back to normal and getting more busy with the influx of Chinese tourists returning. Businesses are open without restrictions. A lot of people wear surgical masks outside in Thailand, but masking was common pre-pandemic as well.”

October 2022 – Babs of https://mumsonflipflops.com , Belgian tourist:  “ We’re travelling in Thailand with 2 small children for 2 months. Travel feels completely normal in Thailand. There are plenty of tourists and hotels are busy.

There are very few Covid rules still in place. You’ll see most Thai wearing face masks at all times, but nothing is expected or enforced. As a tourist, you don’t have to wear one. The one exception is on the Air Asia flight, you’re supposed to wear a mask there. Every store/building has a temperature scanner (hand scanning) and sanitizer that you’re expected to use. We haven’t been into contact testing etc as we’re fully vaccinated and all entry rules have been lifted for Thailand (we weren’t even asked for our vaccination proof).”

September 2022 – Steffi of BeachBumAdventure , expat in Thailand:  “ Tourism is slowly coming back to Thailand and the locals are really keen for tourists to return.

In Bangkok you will still find many Thais wearing masks, even outdoors, although this is no longer a government requirement. On public transport most people are still wearing masks on trains and minivans and buses. In other areas of the country and on the islands, you rarely see people wearing masks.

Many hotels and restaurants are welcoming visitors although some ferry schedules are still reduced due to the low number of visitors. On quieter, less touristy islands some restaurants and shops still remain closed.

Healthcare in Thailand is very efficient if you attend a private hospital, therefore I recommend making sure your health insurance covers this. Many 711 shops offer ATK tests very cheaply (40+ baht) although PCR tests remain expensive (2000+ baht).”

July 2022 – Tania of Slower Travels , digital nomad from New Zealand: “My partner and I lived as digital nomads in Phuket, Thailand for four months in 2022. Now is a great time to visit Phuket. Everything is a little on the quiet side with reduced tourist numbers but the locals are so welcoming and happy to see you.

When we arrived, there was extensive requirements and testing involved. By the time we left, most of these had been dropped. However, most people are still wearing masks in crowded places, giving a feeling of safety.”

May 2022 Linnae – American traveler with family: “We really lucked out with our arrival to Bangkok scheduled for May 1st. We had originally planned to undergo the Test & Go program but they suddenly lifted the testing and quarantine requirements.

Applying for a Thailand Pass online, which is essentially the entry visa, was a straight forward process where you just have to complete the application, provide your vaccination details, and upload pictures of your shot records, passport, and insurance card. We have regular American-style insurance through Aetna, so it covered whatever the minimum requirement was. I think there was an option to purchase some sort of travel health insurance through a Thai company.

It took about 5 days to receive the Thailand pass, which was just a QR code attached to an email. Once we had the Thailand pass, we never had to show any other form of insurance or Covid vaccination when we went through immigration. The hotel check-in was completely normal- no extra documentation required other than our passports.

Our daughter did not have to test on arrival. As a minor, she was able to enter unvaccinated with vaccinated parents. There was an option to add her to our Thailand Pass in the system. She received her own QR code for immigration.

EVERYONE was still masked, inside and outside (even in the pool). I was surprised to see children younger than 2 wearing masks. Outliers would have been the odd westerner. Social distancing did not seem to be a requirement at all.

Restaurants/sites seemed open as usual. Closures due to Covid may not be clear on the business website. So if someone is set on a specific excursion or destination, contact the place ahead of time to make sure it is still open.”

March 9, 2022 – Kristel, U.S. traveler:  “My husband and I have been in Thailand since the start of 2022. In Bangkok, the typical hustle and bustle of the city feels similar to pre-covid days. Street food markets such as Chinatown is packed with both locals and foreigners while the temples are still fairly quiet depending on the time you visit.

With regards to restrictions, masks are still worn both indoors and outdoors and temperature checks are imposed when going into indoor spaces. Healthcare is easily accessible and rapid tests can be bought at a local 7-11 for very cheap. While a lot of restaurants have shut down, there are still plenty of good options and street food areas are staying busy and doing well. If visiting the islands, you can expect beautiful beaches without the crowds.”

February 11, 2022 – Abigail of I’m going on an adventure , British tourist: “My partner and I are currently travelling through Thailand for one month. We are in Phuket at the moment. Food and transport options are good with everything open and actually the area seems to have been revamped since a few years ago; its cleaner and better organised!

thailand tours december 2023

All areas are open and ready to receive guests. Face masks are still required to be worn however in the more populated tourist areas such a Patong no one seems to be using them as much. There is no contact tracing or daily testing required (except official PCR test). It’s always important to carry a face mask as some restaurants and activities will ask to have them on but in general the island so far has been very relaxed! The country still isn’t as busy as pre-covid which actually makes it an even better time to visit as it’s less crowded but there is still a nice holiday vibe.”

January 28, 2022 – Katy, American digital nomad:  “ During our visit to Chiang Mai, we found that most businesses and restaurants in the Old Town area are open. Some are temporarily closed or have reduced hours, but enough were open that it wasn’t a problem. Bars are technically closed. Be aware that you can’t purchase alcohol at restaurants and stores after a certain time in the Chiang Mai province, I believe it’s 9pm now (but it keeps changing).

Travel restrictions are being followed closely by locals and visitors for the most part. Mask wearing and temperature checks are required at all businesses & shops and people do follow these rules. Contact tracing is also required (by scanning an app or signing a register), but we found that most people didn’t bother with this step.

The one exception is at the Chiang Mai Sunday market. Contact tracing (along with mask wearing and temperature scans) are firmly enforced there. Most of the Chiang Mai markets and walking streets are open, except for the Saturday Walking Street (which is closed) and the Night Bazaar (which is mostly closed and not worth visiting). There were some other foreigners in Chiang Mai but not many.

The city is used to having a larger number of tourists, so it didn’t feel too crowded and we didn’t have any issues with waiting in lines or securing tickets to popular attractions. Access to healthcare is easy and affordable in Chiang Mai (at least compared to what we’re used to in the United States). Booster shots are available to anyone (including foreigners) and you can get a PCR test for travel at the Chiang Mai Ram Hospital.”

January 2022 – Zoe Adventura , Australian:  “ I moved to Thailand with my family in January 2022. The biggest difference between here and Australia is that everyone is expected to wear a mask all the time. Even children, and even while exercising. Most tourists don’t. Most people seem relaxed about everything, but occasionally we hear that the hospitals are full – which is pretty scary.

Travel restrictions – there are quite a few hoops to jump through to get to Thailand . We came for the Phuket Sandbox – which meant we had to book a 7 day stay in a government approved sandbox hotel, have a specific insurance paid for, and also get RT-PCR tests before travel, plus 2 more in the first week. During this week we were free to travel around Phuket. For us, it was actually pretty seamless.

Before entering Thailand you need to get a Thaipass, which can be a bit tricky, but there is plenty of information online about what you need to do. There are facebook groups which can help with any questions, and you can apply multiple times if you need.

As far as things being closed, the tourist areas of Phuket are completely different. Patong has restrictions on nightlife and alcohol service is restricted. A lot of shops are closed and boarded up in Patong, which is sad to see. On the other side of the island which typically has less tourism, it’s much less noticeable. That being said, the hotel we are currently staying in is clearly operating on skeleton staff, with half of the rooms empty. I’ve only seen 3-5 other guests, and it is a little creepy. The staff are obviously doing the best they can but the common areas are neglected. Same story in the last hotel we stayed in. All activities are cancelled, kids club is closed etc.”

December 2, 2021 – Katy, American digital nomad, A Rambling Unicorn :  “My husband and I flew from Istanbul to Phuket on Nov. 27 and then will fly to Chiang Mai on Dec. 4 when our stay in the Sandbox is complete. We have Tourist Visas and will be in Thailand for 60 days.

I arrived at the Phuket Airport in November 2021 and was amazed at the thorough measures put into place for international arrivals. All passengers were initially seated in an arrivals hall in chairs that were spaced apart for social distancing. After a check of our documents by workers covered in full PPE, we were led through 5 different stations that verified our documents and administered a PCR test on-the-spot. We were glad we had printed all of our documents out in advance – including our Thai Pass, PCR Test results and SHA+ Hotel booking. Passengers without printed copies had to print them out at a special printing station.

Thai locals take COVID very seriously. Everyone wears masks in public, even when riding open-air motor scooters. Contact tracing is managed via the MorChana app which everyone is encouraged to download. We are staying in a remote part of Phuket where some restaurants are still closed and our hotel is only half full. We haven’t encountered any lines at restaurants or crowds in this part of the island, quite the opposite actually.

Thailand is really particular about the COVID insurance. When we first applied for the COE (this was the precursor to the Thai Pass), we tried to use our World Nomads insurance and it was rejected. I’ve heard anecdotally that they only accept COVID insurance from Thai companies. I don’t know if that is true and/or if things are relaxed now that they’ve moved to the Thai Pass. When we re-applied, we bought insurance through a Thai company that specialized in Thai Pass and Tourist Visa insurance. It came with document that clearly stated COVID was covered with a coverage of 50,000 USD.”

Thailand in December: All You Need to Know

Thailand in December: All You Need to Know

If you’re planning to visit Thailand in December, you made an excellent decision. Postcard-worthy beaches, vibrant nightlife, mystical culture, and world-class cuisine – this is Thailand. And if you visit in December, you can pretty much get the best out of it. Are you ready to plan the most memorable trip of your life? Let’s go!

Weather in Thailand in December

december in thailand-travel-guide

I’m sure the thing you’re most interested in about your Thailand December vacation is the weather. You probably know Thailand is a year-round sunny destination, but you’ve also heard about the dreadful wet season. Don’t worry; December is on the sunny side of things. The weather is different for the different areas, though.

  • Bangkok The capital of Thailand is also one of the most exciting cities in the world. So even if your goal is to spend the trip on one of the magical Thai beaches, I recommend spending a few days in Bangkok as well. December is one of the best months to do that. The temperatures are between 20°C and 31°C (68-81°F), and there are only 7% chances of rain on average.
  • Chiang Mai The capital of the North is one of the most charming cities in the Kingdom. Known for its lush jungles, signature dishes, and elephant interactions, it’s a magnet for tourists. Being further north, the temperatures are way milder than the ones in Bangkok or the islands. Ranging between 14°C and 26°C (57-78°F) with only a 7% chance of rain, the weather in Chiang Mai in December is as perfect as possible.

sunny-beach-in-december-in-phuket

  • Phuket Phuket is the prime beach destination in Thailand. Having two international airports in the area means it’s easy to spend your entire December in Thailand trip there and pump your vitamin D levels to the max. The temperatures are pretty consistent, with averages between 26°C and 28°C (79-83°F), but the rain expectation is rather high, at a 56% chance of precipitation. While this may seem pretty bad for a beach destination, keep in mind there are only four months with less rain expectation than December, and Phuket is still considered one of the best beach destinations in the world.
  • Koh Samui Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is the most significant island in the Chumphon Archipelago. Alongside the nearby Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, the archipelago is famous for its party life, fancy resorts, and diving spots. December is the first month after the wet season in Koh Samui, offering temperatures ranging between 26°C and 29°C (80-84°F) with around 30% chance of rain.

Pros to Spending December in Thailand

  • Weather While the western hemisphere is cold and snowy, you’re up for a treat on the golden beaches with sunny weather. The best way to end the year!
  • Festivities December gives you the chance to spend a memorable Christmas and New Year’s in one of the biggest party hubs in the world.
  • Great Value Even though it’s high season and everything is more expensive than usual, the prices are still pretty low. Especially compared to the alternative tourist destinations in Europe or US.

Cons to Spending December in Thailand

  • Crowds Being as perfect as it is, spending December in Thailand is an idea that circles around millions of heads. So you can expect thick crowds around most attractions and beaches. The good thing is there are countless opulent temples and golden shores in the Kingdom, so finding a tranquil one is not that hard.
  • Prices Prices are always at their highest during the peak tourist months. And while the food increase won’t be noticeable, hotels and plane tickets cost way more in December. That’s why if you want a nice accommodation without having to spend a fortune, I recommend organizing your  Thai itinerary  at least three months ahead.
  • Shorter Days. December in Thailand offers the least amount of daylight hours. And while the amount is not mindblowing (around 3 hours less), it’s still less time to spend exploring landmarks and beaches.

How to get Around Thailand

december in Thailand-man-under-a-plane

Since the weather is good, you can use all the transportation options the Kingdom offers. Air Asia have reasonably priced tickets, but you still have to deal with the whole airport hassle. Still, for long distances, it’s the best way to travel.

For not that long distances, I like to use the Thai buses. Way cheaper than planes and almost hassle-free. For the islands, obviously, you’ll have to use ferries and fast boats. The best place to find all kinds of transportation in Thailand (and other parts of Asia) is, by far,  12go.asia .

To be completely independent, you can  rent a car  and use it inside the cities as well. Remember, though, that in Thailand, they drive on the left side of the road, so it may be a bit tricky.

What to do in Thailand in December

thailand-in-december-chrismass-tree

Everything is open during December in Thailand, so you can visit the biggest attractions in your area (for more info,  check here ).  The December-specific activities are:

  • Christmas Although Thai people are mostly Buddhist, they do celebrate the birth of Jesus. While they don’t care about Jesus that much but more about Santa, you can still find plenty of Christmas wholesales, Christmas parties, and Christmas-themed shops.
  • New Year’s Eve Thai New Year, also known as Songkran, is celebrated in April and has nothing to do with our New Year (water guns and stuff). Thai people love to party, though, so you can expect lavish celebrations, fireworks, and all the mandatory New Year’s Eve things on December 31st.

december-in-thailand-new-years-fireworks

  • King’s Birthday Celebrated on December 5th, this is actually their previous beloved King’s birthday. It’s a national holiday where Thai people honor King Bhumibol Adulyadej (also known as Rama IX) by dressing in yellow.
  • Chiang Mai Red Cross and Winter Fair Starting at the end of December and lasting for two weeks, Chiang Mai’s favorite fair is a treat for all ages and includes various food competitions, a Ferris wheel, and everything you can expect from a good fair.

southeast-asia-bucket-list-celebrate-lio-krathong

  • Loy Krathong Usually held at the end of November, the celebrations for Thailand’s most picturesque holiday often last well into December.  Don’t know what Loy Kratong is? Well, you’ve probably seen a picture with thousand lanterns flowing in the air (or in the rivers). This is Loy Kratong – the incredibly scenic festival of light.

The weather in Thailand in December is generally pleasant, with mild temperatures ranging from 22°C to 32°C.

Yes, December is one of the best months to visit Thailand because of the pleasant weather and festive atmosphere.

Many festivals and events are celebrated in Thailand in December, including the famous Loy Krathong festival, Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations, and the King’s Birthday.

Since December is a good time to visit any destination, the most popular tourist spots in the country are also the most popular in December –  Bangkok , Chiang Mai,  Phuket , Koh Samui, and  Pattaya .

To prepare for a trip to Thailand in December, you should book accommodations and activities at least three months in advance. Of course, you can do it closer to your vacation dates, but the chances of finding a good hotel for a reasonable price become slimmer each day you wait.

That’s all from me, I hope you have a perfect December in Thailand. ———————————— If you haven’t planned your trip there yet, find out how I plan my trips! ———————————— I have 32 bucket list ideas for Thailand. See my impossible bucket list of 1700+ adventures!

Amazing Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam 18 days Tour

Amazing Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam 18 days

This is Lillian, Robert’s wife, who also went on the tour. The guides were exceptional in Bangkok and Siem Reap. They should be used every time. The tours were interesting and educational. The vehicles were clean and with a lot of space. We definitely visited the best of what these countries have to offer. My only suggestion would be to include Danang with the Ba Na Hills cable car ride to see The Golden Bridge. We did that on our own before going to our second night in Hoi An. It is worth seeing plus the dragon bridge at night in Danang. We stayed at the Vanda Hotel in Danang and walked to the Dragon Bridge which was around the corner. I want to thank you for providing a wonderful and beautiful tour. Bravo Indochina tours did a great job. Lillian Loewen

Cambodia Adventure Tour

Cambodia Adventure

Our group was lucky to get Chhehai. His love for his country, his knowledge and personality made this trip an Asian highlight. The trip had outstanding highlights including Angkor Wat but also time in the countryside and along the water which made us feel we were seeing and meeting the real people of Khmer (Cambodia). Some of the accommodations were very basic but this was an Intrepid basic tour so it was expected. Highly recommend Intrepid if you want to see the real Cambodia, meet local people and fall in love with this amazing country.

Spirits Of Vietnam - Cambodia - Thailand In 16 Days

We had an amazing time. We would recommend this tour to others. One recommendation would be to reduce the additional flight from Cambodia to Phuket to 1 flight not 2, to increase the amount of time in Phuket and spend less time in airports.

Discover Indochina: 10-Day Private Expedition (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand) Tour

Discover Indochina: 10-Day Private Expedition (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand)

We opted for the "Off The Beaten Track" tour to delve into a unique experience of Vietnam, and we're pleased to report that the journey was truly outstanding. Long Pham from Vietnam Tour Fun provided exceptional support, checking in with us daily to ensure everything was going smoothly. We felt thoroughly supported and well looked after throughout the trip. Here are the highlights we truly cherished: The "Off The Beaten Path" trekking in Mai Chau, Pu Luong, Sapa, and the areas around Hoi An was simply unforgettable. We relished the tranquility of village life, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The guides in these regions each brought a distinct perspective, their backgrounds and deep knowledge of the areas making our experience truly enriching. Accommodations varied from good to exceptional, with some offering incredible views. Similarly, the food ranged from good to outstanding, with some meals truly memorable. As for aspects we would tweak: Halong Bay, despite its iconic status, felt a bit too much "on the beaten path" for our liking. The long journey from Hanoi, the logistics of embarking and disembarking the cruise ship, the tightly scheduled activities on board, and the limited cruising time left us feeling it wasn't quite worth it. We would have preferred to spend more time either in Pu Luong or Sapa. The journey to Bac Ha Sunday Market also proved to be a long day of driving. We set off early from Sapa and didn't return to our Hanoi hotel until after 9 pm. Given the chance, we would skip the market and opt for an extra day of trekking in Sapa instead. Additionally, we'd have skipped the southern destinations and instead extended our stay in Hoi An, possibly adding Hue and Da Nang to the itinerary. Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong River cruise, while bustling and lively, didn't quite align with our desire for an "Off The Beaten Track" experience. In conclusion, our journey was excellent, and with a few adjustments to the itinerary, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Amazing Vietnam & Cambodia & Thailand ends Bangkok (4 Star Hotels)

This trip was amazing and you do a lot in three countries but 16 days is too much with out barely any free days, I would have liked a few more free days to relax and take it easy. otherwise the trip and stays were pretty amazing.

What people love about Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam Tours in December

In Total the trip was good in that we were able to see a part of the world that we had never and might never again) see. However there were various things that were surprises to us. The fact that it was our responsibility to check in for flights booked by Tour Radar was a surprise and added a level of stress in the midst of the trip that could have been dealt with by advance communication or by Tourradar offering another element to the package which includes a concierge type service which gets boarding passes (ie could use the in country tour guides). Not all hotels had staff that could communicate effectively (if at all) in English which would have made the first days in a city easier . Finding good restaurants, ATMs, drug stores etc. Some of your guides were helpful in providing a lot of that information when they dropped us off at the hotel. Chang our Bangkok guide did not do that and with th e challenges of hotel staff to communicate , our first day or two in Bangkok was the low point of our tour. Also the next day city tour was poorly done and the length of the tour could have been extended a little so the city tour was more comprehensive. Also I am told Thailand is a beautiful country but we saw nothing of the beauty that might have made Thailand famous. We enjoyed the Hare Residence in Siem Reap and would suggest keeping it in the program.. Also Laos was enjoyable , as was the hotel but the only suggestion would be to add or provide the opportunity for a visit to see one of the elephant reserves near to Luang Prabang. A city tour of Na Noi (and Saigon) would have been good to include. We came early so were able to book our own tours in Ha Noi but feel we really did not see Saigon at all. Overall the trip was good. I would suggest (as previously mentioned) a concierge type service for older travellers and maybe expanding the tour groups to 8-10 would make that more cost effective
had a great trip. our guide was oustanding. we've been on several g trips, this itinerary and daily schedule kept us busy and always interested. would reccomend this trip for anyone interested in this part of the world.
