The Star Trek: The Next Generation Series in Order (137 Books)

Frequently asked questions (faq), how many books are in the star trek: the next generation series, when will the next book in the star trek: the next generation series be released, what was the first book written in the star trek: the next generation series, what genre is the star trek: the next generation series.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Lit-verse Reading List

The Next Generation Reading List is centered around the Post-Nemesis Series, which chronicles events following Star Trek: Nemesis . The A Time To... miniseries acts as a lead-in to these stories, as well as to the Titan series.  Accordingly there are two good "jumping on points" below.

Besides the Post-Nemesis Series, many additional novels, short stories, comics, and audiobooks are connected due to various references in other books, or to other books. These references are mentioned in the notes. Other novels are connected by six crossover series: Invasion! (which is referenced several times in the Lit-verse), Day of Honor (which shares references with several things in the Lit-verse), Double Helix (which ties into the New Frontier series), The Captain's Table (which is thematically connected to the Lit-verse spanning Tales From the Captain's Table ), Section 31 (which ties into the Deep Space Nine Post-Finale Series), and Gateways (which ties into the Deep Space Nine Post-Finale Series and the New Frontier series.)

Twelve other short stories or novellas are also connected: one from Enterprise Logs (which shares references among several connected novels), one from The Brave and the Bold duology (which ties into the Gorkon series), two from New Frontier: No Limits (which ties-in to the New Frontier series), six from Tales of the Dominion War (which ties into four Lit-verse series), and two from Seven Deadly Sins (which ties into two other Lit-verse series.)

Seventeen novels in other series crossover with The Next Generation: SCE: Many Splendors , New Frontier: House of Cards, SCE: The Belly of the Beast, Deep Space Nine: Avatar Book 1, Deep Space Nine: Avatar Book 2, SCE: The Art of the Deal, SCE: Remembrance of Things Past Book 1, SCE: Remembrance of Things Past Book 2, Titan: Taking Wing, Articles of the Federation, Department of Temporal Investigations: Watching the Clock, Typhon Pact: Rough Beasts of Empire, Prometheus: Fire With Fire, Prometheus: The Root of All Rage, Deep Space Nine: The Missing, and Prometheus: In the Heart of Chaos , and Section 31: Control. Several comics are connected by the Telepathy War crossover event (which ties into the Starfleet Academy series.)

Also included are the stories from The Sky's the Limit and the Slings and Arrows miniseries (both of which contain stories which share references with the A Time To... series.) Various references in parts of the Wildstorm Star Trek Special, the DC Specials #2-3 , Unlimited #1, #4, and #8, and the anthology New Worlds, New Civilizations connect The Next Generation stories from those works.

The storylines of McCoy, Spock, and Scotty transfer to The Next Generation storyline starting with their appearances in the series, and their later adventures are included here. Scotty's storyline transfers to the SCE series at the end of the Dominion War. The Titan series spins off several characters from The Next Generation onto the USS Titan, and those characters' storylines leave this list at that point. IDW Comics' line of The Next Generation mirror universe stories were eventually rebranded simply The Mirror War , but that series is included here. At the end of The Next Generation Reading List all storylines transfer to the Picard Reading List.

In addition, there are a few The Next Generation novels which, along with many The Original Series novels, comprised the "Original Lit-verse" of the 1980s. This was a group of stories which were eventually linked together through references and shared characters. Closely connected to these books was the DC Comics series of the 1980s. Characters were sometimes shared between the two media.

Several "Original Lit-verse" novels have been referenced in the modern continuity, more or less linking both bodies of work, though of course with continuity difficulties. The numbering system of the "Original Lit-verse" included here is strictly chronological and did not originate from the authors' or editors' intent.

The earliest book eventually connected to the "Original Lit-verse" was published in 1977. The continuity flourished throughout the 1980s under editor Dave Stern. Around 1988, under the direction of Gene Roddenberry and Richard Arnold, a push was made to cut back on shared characters and references between novels. This was not a hard rule, and references between books and between comics continued at a slower pace through the mid 1990s under Stern and Kevin Ryan. I place the end of this era, and the advent of the modern Lit-verse, around 1995/1996, under editor John Ordover.

Dark blue denotes the primary narrative. Read these for the bare bones story. Light blue denotes the expanded storyline. Read any or all of these to go a bit deeper. Dark green denotes the Original Lit-verse. Light green denotes the DC Comics, which were interconnected with the Original Lit-verse novels. The white denotes every other connected story, regardless of continuity. Hover for notes. As always, not every reference to every other story is mentioned, just the one I chose as most important to show the expanding Lit-verse web.

Star Trek post-Nemesis novel reading order - Shastrix Books

Star trek post-nemesis reading order.

The following is a recommendation of a reading order for the novels that are set in and/or interact with the post-Nemesis era of Star Trek. This includes the ongoing adventures in the Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise lines, along with spin-off series Titan and adventures of the USS Aventine.

This is based roughly on the idea that you want to read adventures mostly in the order they are set, however in some instances the publication order is different and it makes sense to read them slightly out of 'chronological' order.

How many Star Trek The Next Generation books are there?

To answer a question as vital as the number of coffee cups consumed while reading, there are exactly 36 books in the Star Trek The Next Generation series. Each book represents a chapter in the broader narrative, introducing new twists, turns, and perhaps the occasional talking dragon (disclaimer: dragons depend on the genre). The series might take you on a rollercoaster of emotions or provide a steady companion on lazy Sunday afternoons. Remember, the journey through a book series is not just about reaching the end but also about the memories created along the way.

In what order should I read these books?

The first page of this saga was turned in 1990, and the ink dried on the latest page in 2021. While each book might be a world in itself, reading them in the order they were published helps maintain the storyline's natural progression. Think of it like baking a cake; you could add the ingredients in any order, but following the recipe usually results in a tastier treat. Of course, for the adventurous souls, mixing up the order might offer a new perspective – just be prepared for unexpected plot revelations!

Where can I find more information about each book?

Each book in the Star Trek The Next Generation series comes with its own little treasure trove of information, nestled snugly above the "View on Amazon" button. Here, you'll discover not just the publication year, which is essential for understanding the context and evolution of the series, but also a succinct summary that teases the story without spoiling any surprises. It's the perfect spot for readers to get a glimpse of what lies within the pages, helping them decide which book to dive into next. Additionally, we occasionally include insights into the writing process, thematic elements, or how each book fits into the larger tapestry of the series.

Trek-Lit Reading Order Flow Chart

star trek tng book order

  • Crossovers:
  • To fully immerse yourself in the litverse, the big crossover event that really starting to bring things together was the Destiny trilogy - A  great place to jump in, leading to stories from several series set after it. One step back from Destiny is Articles of the Federation , which is the perfect introduction to the world of Federation politics which becomes prominent in Destiny and beyond.
  • If you're looking to jump in further along, then  The Fall  is a good place to start; the five-part crossover brings together most of the 24th century series, and shakes up the status quo for the series as they continue independently after.
  • A cohesive series of Mirror Universe stories builds to a grand finale that has knock-on effects in the prime timeline narrative. These stories begin in the anthology Glass Empire .
  • DS9 was the first series to enjoy a post-TV relaunch; the main new DS9 adventures start from Avatar , which is also available in Twist of Faith , an omnibus of the first four books of the series.
  • The ongoing TNG narrative really starts from the A Time to… series, but you could jump on from the first book set after Nemesis , Death in Winter . Later on in the run, other good jumping on points are the Cold Equations trilogy, or  Armageddon's Arrow , the first of a run of stories from the same mission for the Enterprise.
  • Another branch of TNG , Titan , featuring Captain Riker's ship, gets going from Taking Wing , or you can explore Picard's backstory in the run of Stargazer novels which begins with Reunion .
  • Voyager 's first post- Endgame stories start from Homecoming , but the series got something of a second start later with the return to the Delta Quadrant in  Full Circle .
  • Enterprise:
  • Enterprise 's post finale adventures begin from The Good That Men Do . This series also has secondary relaunch with the post-Romulan War era in A Choice of Futures  beginning the Rise of the Federation series.
  • TOS doesn't have quite the same sort of ongoing narrative as the other series, but there are a few books that form a loose continuity, and The Captain's Oath is a good place to start with those.
  • If you're looking for something more serialised in the 23rd century, then check out  Vanguard , which starts from Harbinger , and spawned a spin-off series Seekers , beginning with Second Nature .
  • A side-step from regular TOS adventures gives us a linked series of books featuring the Star Trek universe of the 20th and 21st centuries. A good place to start exploring these is the Eugenics Wars duology.
  • Other spin-offs
  • New Frontier was the first major spin-off Star Trek book series, featuring the adventures of Captain Calhoun and the USS Excalibur. The series begins with House of Cards , but the first four books were all short, and are also available as a single omnibus .
  • IKS Gorkon , retitled in its final book as Klingon Empire , is a Klingon series, which got it's first moment's in the TNG novel Diplomatic Implausibility .
  • Not listed in full on the chart is  Corps of Engineers , also known as SCE , this extensive series of novellas features the engineering specialists of the USS da Vinci and crosses over into other series every so often. Their stories begin with  The Belly of the Beast , or an omnibus of the first four books in the series,  Have Tech, Will Travel .
  • Department of Temporal Investigations features the time traveling hijinks, and frustrated bureaucracy, of the Federation's time police. Their adventures start (depending on how you perceive time) with Watching the Clock .
  • Prometheus is a unique series, the first tie-in to be originally written in German, but also available in English. A trilogy of books featuring the distinctive ship begins with Fire with Fire .

Thanks for the hard work !!! i do really appreciate it. Do you have plans on updating from time to time ??? regards

star trek tng book order

It's on version 2 at the moment, I'll probably do an update once The Fall is done and we know what effect that has on everything :)

star trek tng book order

Thank you so much for updating this. It is possible to find the info yourself on Memory Alpha etc but this is a much easier way to do it and a good way too not scare off new readers with them having to do too much own research.

star trek tng book order

Where is Spock Must Die in this? Also, you have a typo in the title of "Greater Than the Sum." But... wow, just wow. What a map.

star trek tng book order

Important question: where does "Planet X", the TNG/X-Men crossover, fit in?

Thanks for the note dwasifer, fixed that error now :) Rev, Planet X doesn't really much connect to the wider continuity as far as I know (I've not read it), but I believe it's a direct sequel to the TNG/X-Men comic Second Contact, which itself takes place immediately after First Contact.

star trek tng book order

This is an amazing reference. Thanks very much for putting it together. I've been using it to organise my Trek Books and for reading the 20 or so trek books that I've recently bought in the right order.

hi fantastic flow chart! ...what program did you use to create the chart?

star trek tng book order

I love you for making this. The Pocket Books Novel-verse is starting to become like it's own Star-Wars-Expanded-Universe-esque canon storyline.

This is really awesome! I love Star Trek and after watching everything 1000 times over I need new content so I figured I would dive into the book series for the first time. But where to start? This really helps answer that question and gives me a good reference! Thanks!

star trek tng book order

First, I absolutely love this thing. I've been trying to get caught up on Trek lit for a while now and this has been VERY HELPFUL. A couple constructive comments: #1 There's a dashed green line going to Serpents Among the Ruins/The Art of the Impossible/Alien Spotlight: Cardassians/Cardassia and Andor that doesn't have a beginning. It's all end arrows, so it's unclear which direction this is supposed to go. #2 Q Are Cordially Invited. I haven't read it yet so I don't know exactly where it goes but I'm thinking it needs to be included.

Hi Benjamin, apologies for the very slow reply, I hadn't spotted your comment! As you might see, we've just posted an updated version of the chart, which might help with your questions, but to expand on them: #1 We removed the multi-directional Cardassian story arrow because ti was a bit confusing indeed, but the idea was to show how all the Cardassian/Garak stories are generally a bit interconnected. But we can sort of communicate that with the series dots not, so we didn't need the confusing arrows to everywhere! #2 Q Are Cordially Invited... tells the story of the Picard/Crusher wedding, which took place some time before Greater Than the Sum. But there is a framing story on an unspecified wedding anniversary. As we couldn't spot a reference to which anniversary we've opted to put it down in almost publication order, with the other TNG ebook, just before The Fall.

star trek tng book order

Sadly the site that opens once I click on the flow chart stays blank.

Working fine for me. Anyone else having problems?

Thanks for this graphic, it really helps me and will from now on be my guide :) Do you have plans on updating it with the new novels that have been and will be released?

Of course, this is already version four, which includes most of the books coming out this year (that have connections to the wider continuity) and a few even further ahead already. As more books come we'll update accordingly, and also refine the chart once we know more connections in forthcoming books :)

@8of5 That's amazing to hear! Thanks again for your work it really helps!

Thank you for creating this. Watched all the shows, just now getting into the books! This helps a bunch!

star trek tng book order

I have watched the show, its better if you had created this flowchart with standard flowchart symbols

star trek tng book order

This is top-notch. Printed it off and have it laminated already! Been able to track all my reading and discover what else to read in some logical order. As a result, just bought 13 new books. Hunting down the older ones are a bit tricky - been using Abe Books but this can be a wee expensive when you live in Australia. Booktopia's great for the more popular and/or newer books. Just wanted to say thank-you

That should be Book Depository. Booktopia a place a hardly buy books from - but I do from time to time. Needless to say, I've never bought any Star Trek from Booktopia. Have a great day :)

star trek tng book order

I come back to this flow chart every couple of months. Just to find out which book(s) to read next. Thanks for the good work!

star trek tng book order

The DS9 upcoming book "The Empty Sack" is now titled "Rules of Accusation" and will be out in July, 2016

Thanks for the update Terry!

star trek tng book order

Hi, Any update incoming?

Working on an update right now in fact, I expect it will be up next week some time (complete with the final title for Terry's book!).

Excited to see it. thanks.

Thank you Baby Jesus I found this

star trek tng book order

This list is awesome. Unfortuantely, now that the color palette is up to 19, my mild color-blindness is making matching some of these difficult if not a lost cause. Guessing the circles are too teeny to use iconography, so probably not much to be done for it. Still, a minor issue with an awesome chart.

I did revise the colours this time around to try and make them distinct as possible, as someone made a similar remark at the last revision. But yes you're right, due to the rather large number of colours to mark all the different dots, and the dots being too small to do much else it would take a completely different design approach to make it easier to read. It's something we're aware of, but haven't found a solution yet.

star trek tng book order

A great effort / work! Kudos to you brave souls! :)

Where does the Genesis Wave fit in?

star trek tng book order

Ty for your hard work

Thanks for your work, I'm following this since version 2 and it's an amazing help for me. This is why I love Star Trek - the fans! (also: great that you included Prometheus!)

Been meaning to catch up with you - thanks for this updated and shared resource. Top-notch! Kimberley.

star trek tng book order

This has been a great resource for catching up on all of the books/series. I did find one error, though. Somehow, you've omitted A Time to Kill from the TNG:A Time To... saga in version 5. Thanks again for the hard work and maintenance!

star trek tng book order

This flowchart is really awesome. And thanks for adding "Star Trek Prometheus" But I found an error, too. "Star Trek: Prometheus: Into the Heart of Chaos" is volume III not II. "The Source of All Fury" is II. And: The connection to "Takedown" is the wrong way round. STP take place just before "Takedown" and while it was written later it references events, that take place at the beginning of "Takedown". Bernd

star trek tng book order

This chart is great, but do you have a merged list of everything in a single chronological order?

star trek tng book order

This chart is great and all, but... where's Corps of Engineers? Because I don't see it on there.

Im thinking of reading Section 31 Control. Do I need to read Disavowed first?

Absolutely. I think ~most (all) would agree. They are both great reads.

If I remember right, way back last year I had the following experience. I had Disavowed as being the next read on DS9 having been through all the others. But I had to stop reading it after a while - I felt I was missing something. So, I went a few steps back and read The Fall series (esp. A Ceremony of Losses - I think), and then went through Vanguard, Lovell and Seekers (in that order) - I'm now on Seekers #2. It's been really interesting getting familiar with all the backdrop as well as having some great reads. Anyway, whatever you do have a great read. I'm sure you'll be able to get any background info to fill in any detail behind both Disavowed & Control from the Internet (Memory Alpha or Beta) - and thanks for reminding me to order my copy of Control!

Any updates inbound?

Yeah, this list is a bit out of date right now. I'm currently reading "Available Light." (The latest TNG book as of April 2019)

star trek tng book order

Please could this list be updated, I used to rely on this as which book to read and in what sequence but its now outdated.

Also really looking forward to an update :) would be really appreciated.

star trek tng book order

Also looking for an update, I use this to find out when new stuff is out, I didn't even know about Collateral Damage

I only just found out about Collateral Damage as well. This graphic is quickly falling behind! I hope it gets updated, it has been a valuable resource.

Kudos to the flow chart. That is awesome and exactly what I was looking for.

Everyone that's been asking for an update, please check the page now :)

Thank you very much for taking the time to update and expand it. Been using it since version 1. I almost read all novels that are one the chart and feeling both sadness that the litverse as we know it will come to an end. But I'm looking forward to what's to come and if there will be one last novel to bring the novelverse in line with Picard.

star trek tng book order

Great chart!! Thanks for the update. Loving your work. #LLAP

star trek tng book order

This is fantastic! Thanks for all of the work you did putting this together!

star trek tng book order

Just a quick nitpick, the "Created By" section in the 2020 version has a typo (I'm assuming). It says "For the latest version, and additional notes, visit: TrekTrekCollective.com" Looks like there's an extra "Trek" in the url. That said, I love the chart. Thank you!

Is a new version planned for rhe chart? One that goes up to the upcoming Coda trilogy?

There are a couple references to the Enterprise-E’s recent experience with the Genesis Wave in A Time to Sow.

Star Trek Novel Reading Order

Star Trek is one of the largest media tie-ins around, next to Star Wars novelizations.  Although released in multiple series such as The Original Series, The Next Generation, Section 13, etc you can read these books as one large, interconnected story line.  This is a reading order for all of the published Star Trek novels done more or less chronologically (there are several time travel novels where it is set in multiple time frames, in those cases it is placed chronologically where the majority of the issue takes place).

***Update****

I’ve reworked this order.  Reading it through, it wasn’t quite right, and really to be enjoyed it should be done with all the media (shows, comics, books, etc).  I’ve made a working order that you can not only follow, but create an account and track your reading & viewing.  It’s still a work in progress, so if an era you are looking for you don’t see, just be patient.  I am adding dozens of listings a day.

http://startrekreadingorder.com/

If you still only want the books, there is a listing of just books (still in progress also) here: http://startrekreadingorder.com/novel_reading_order.php

Star Trek: The Next Generation Books Overview

First strike.

Long ago, before the days of myth and legend, our worlds belonged to them. Now they want them back… . Captain Kirk is stunned when the Federation receives an urgent plea for help from the Klingon Empire. A mysterious starship has invaded Klingon space and resisted all their efforts to destroy it. Establishing contact with the stranger’s ship, Kirk discovers that it is only the vanguard of a vast alien fleet obsessed with conquering the Klingons, the Federation, the Romulans, and all who dwell in the space that was once their own. The Invasion has begun… .

The Soldiers of Fear

Long ago, before the dawn of civilization, they were banished to the realm of nightmares. Now the terrors are real… A generation ago, another ‘Starship Enterprise’ TM fought off a ship of exiled aliens intent on conquering all of the Alpha Quadrant. Starfleet thought the foe had been repelled forever until now. The Furies have returned in might warships even more powerful than before. But their weapons are more than merely physical, for these aliens are the origins of all the demons and monsters of ancient myth, and they have found a way to project fear directly into the minds of their enemies. To defeat the Furies, and save the Federation, Picard and the crew of the ‘U.S.S. Enterprise’ TM must first conquer the darkest terrors of their unconscious minds.

Time’s Enemy

Millenia ago, an apocalyptic battle was fought in the Alpha Quadrant. The losers were banished, but what became of the victors? The Federation is threatened by this ancient mystery when a battered and broken version of the Defiant is found, frozen for five thousand years, in an icy cloud of cometary debris. Captain Sisko and the crew of Deep Space NineTM are summoned to answer the most baffling question of their lives: how and when will their ship be catapulted back through time to its destruction? And does its ancient death mean that one of the combatants in a primordial battle is poised now to storm the Alpha Quadrant? Only the wormhole holds the answer and the future of the Federation itself may depend on the secrets it conceals.

The Final Fury

For ages they have sought to claim our worlds. Now, at last, we take the battle to them… . Far from the Federation’s desperate war against the invading Furies, the crew of the U.S.S. VoyagerTM encounters something they never expected to hear again: a Starfleet distress call. The signal leads them to a vast assemblage of non humanoid races engaged in a monumental project of incredible magnitude. Here is the source of the terrible invasion threatening the entire Alpha Quadrant and, for the Starship VoyagerTM, a possible route home. But soon there may not be any home to return to…

Ancient Blood

To true Klingon warriors, no occasion is more sacred than the Day of Honor, when they pay homage to all that makes them Klingon. But honor demands its price… . Worf finds his honor tested when he goes undercover to infiltrate a planetary criminal network. How can he root out the corruption on Sindikash without resorting to deceit and treachery himself? Worf’s dilemma is shared by his son Alexander, who searches for the true meaning of honor in his own human heritage. Along with his son, Worf must confront deadly danger and the inner struggles of his Klingon soul.

Her Klingon Soul

Even light years from the Klingon Empire, the Day of Honor remains an occasion of great importance. And sometimes honor is found in the most unexpected places… B’Elanna Torres has never cared for the Day of Honor. Ashamed of her Klingon heritage, she regards the holiday as an unwanted reminder of all she has struggled to repress. Besides, something awful always seems to happen to her then. Her bad luck seems to be running true to form when she and Harry Kim are captured by alien slavers. Imprisoned by the enigmatic Risatti, force to mine for deadly radioactive ore, Torres will need all of her strength and cunning to survive and her honor as well.

Treaty’s Law

In part four of the sequel to Invasion, Captain Kirk and Klingon Commander Kor must rely on each other’s honor to survive a hostile alien attack.

Honor Bound

No occasion is more sacred to the Klingons than the Day of Honour; and to Klingon youth, honour is a hard learned lesson. Alexander is finding it hard to control his emerging Klingon traits, but a frightening confession from his own father, Worf, shows him how vital it is to learn self control.

Day of Honor

From the author of ALL GOOD THINGS and SHADOWS ON THE SUN, a science fiction novel in the STAR TREK VOYAGER series. Based around an episode from a programme due to be broadcast in Autumn 1997, the novelisation is a sequel to DAY OF HONOUR: HER KLINGON SOUL.

The USS ‘Enterprise D’ has been on its mission of exploration under the command of Captain Jean Luc Picard for less than a year when a virulant epidemic strikes Archaria III. Picard and his crew are dispatched to the planet to deliver aid.

Like a strand of mutating DNA, a deadly conspiracy winds its way through the entire Alpha Quadrant, just as it stretches across several years of Starfleet history even to the Cardassian space station that will someday be known as Deep Space Nine . A virulent plague has stricken Terok Nor, striking down both the enslaved Bajorans and Cardassian oppressors, who blame each other for the growing epidemic. Dr. Katherine Pulaski, late of the Starship Enterprise , must work with the tyrannical Gul Dukat, as well as a rebel spy named Kira Nerys, to discover the true source of an infection that threatens them all!

Like the biological weapons they employ, a sinister conspiracy has spread across the Delta Quadrant and across many years of Starfleet History. Now the mysterious menace surfaces again to strike at the heart of the Romulan Empire. An artificial virus has infected the entire Romulan ruling family. Ambassador Spock must put aside his efforts at unification to summon his old friend, Dr. Leonard McCoy, who discovers that the only hope for a cure lies with a long lost Romulan heir whose blood and tissues have not been contaminated by the virus. But can the heir be found before the collapse of a ruling dynasty throws the entire Empire into chaos?

Like intertwining filaments of human and alien DNA, a ruthless campaign of revenge has threaded its way through the galaxy, touching billions of sentient beings and changing forever the life of Lieutenant Thomas Riker. Tom Riker, an identical duplicate of the ‘Starship Enterprise’sTM ‘ first officer, is serving as a Starfleet medical courier when he encounters a group of Maquis renegades, led by a former Starfleet officer named Chakotay. A planet in the Demilitarized Zone, now controlled by the Cardassians, has been stricken with the same deadly disease that has plagued the Alpha Quadrant for years, and only Riker can get the medical supplies the Maquis so desperately need. But the Cardassians would rather destroy all life on the planet than risk letting the epidemic spread!

Double or Nothing

The Next Generation meets the New Frontier as Captain Jean Luc Picard joins forces with Captain Mackenzie Calhoun to track down and confront the hidden architects of the recurring plague that is threatening the universe.

The First Virtue

An insidious plot for revenge has spanned several years in the life of Jean Luc Picard, but how did this merciless vendetta get started? Like a double helixcurling back on itself, the final answer lies at the very beginning… A series of terrorist attacks have heightened tensions between two alien races, bringing an entire sector to the brink of interplanetary war. While Picard, captain of the U.S.S. Stargazer, struggles to keep the peace, Lieutenant Commander Jack Crusher must team up with a Vulcan officer named Tuvok to uncover the hidden architect of the attacks, but the outcome of their quest would breed dire consequences for the future.

Gemworld, Book Two

Sparkling like a three dimensional snowflake in the depths of space, Gernworld once was one of the Federation’s greatest marvels. Six different alien races coexisted peacefully on an artificial world composed entirely of crystal until the very substance of Gemworld began to multiply out of control, tearing the world apart. Now the entire planet and the Starship Enterprise as well faces total destruction. The only way to stop the disaster is to turn off the vast network of force fields holding Gemworld’s atmosphere in place, but to do so will require the cooperation of each of the planet’s half dozen alien civilizations, one of which sabotaged Gemworld in the first place. With time running out, Captain Picard and his crew, including a lovestruck Lieutenant Barclay, must embark on a hazardous trek across the dying planet to find and unite the chief engineers from many strange and exotic races while watching out for a mass murderer determined to destroy a world!

The Genesis Wave, Book One

Intended to create life from nothingness, the Genesis Device became instead a weapon of awe inspiring destructiveness, capable of rearranging matter and life energy on a planetary scale. After the cataclysmic death of the Genesis Planet, Starfleet wisely decided to destroy all data and records on Project Genesis, hoping to bury its deadly secret forever. Now, nearly a century later, all that remains of Genesis is the knowledge stored in the mind of an elderly, almost forgotten scientist named Dr Carol Marcus. But Dr Marcus has gone missing, and a mysterious wave of energy is sweeping across the Alpha Quadrant at terrfying speed, wiping out the populations of entire planets, rearranging matter on a molecular level to create bizarre new landscapes and lifeforms. The USS Enterprise, commanded by Captain Jean Luc Picard, is the first Starfleet vessel to discover the threat, but they are not the only ones in danger. Trillions of souls and hundreds of inhabited planets lie in the path of the mutagenic wave, which is expanding outwards as it traverses the cosmos, and Earth itself faces total obliteration!

The Genesis Wave, Book Two

The spectacular conclusion to the thrilling double sized adventure! Like an unstoppable cosmic storm, the dreaded Genesis Wave continues to sweep across the Alpha Quadrant, transforming entire planets on a molecular level and threatening entire civilizations with extinction. Based on the long hidden scientific secrets of Dr. Carol Marcus, who has mysteriously disappeared, the wave of mutagenic protomatter seems to have come from nowhere, posing a cataclysmic menace to life as we know it. To combat the rushing terror of the wave, Captain Jean Luc Picard and the crew of the Starship Enterprise have been forced into an uneasy alliance with both the Klingons and the Romulan Empire, both of whom may crave the forbidden secrets of the Genesis technology for themselves. The finest engineers of three civilizations, including Geordi La Forge and his long lost love, Dr. Leah Brahms, must race against time to devise some way of halting the deadly wave before yet another world is transformed into something entirely alien and unrecognizable. But even if, against all odds, the Genesis Wave can be defeated, Picard and his potentially treacherous allies must still confront the greater mystery of what unknown intelligence dared to launch the wave against an unsuspecting galaxy and for what malevolent purpose… .

The Genesis Wave, Book Three

‘As a matter of cosmic history, it has always been easier to destroy than to create.’ Spock, The Wrath of Khan Sweeping across the Alpha Quadrant at a terrifying speed, a wave of Genesis energy has wiped out whole populations of entire planets, rearranging matter on a molecular level to create bizarre new landscapes and life forms. The U.S.S. Enterprise , commanded by Captain Jean Luc Picard, managed to counter the threat, halting the wave in its tracks and stopping the alien race that had sent the wave crashing through the galaxy. In the process the crew saved trillions of souls and hundreds of inhabited planets from the mutagenic wave. Earth itself, as well as the Romulan Empire, was saved from obliteration. Now nothing is left to do but clean up the mess the Genesis Wave left behind. Or so it seems. Unknown to Picard and his crew, the use of the Genesis Wave on a galactic scale had weakened the walls between our dimension and one right next door, one that harbors a deadly threat to not only the survival of civilization throughout the galaxy, but the survival of reality itself. The Genesis Wave, Book Three , is the final volume of an apocalyptic adventure that pits the desperate crew of the Starship Enterprise against a disaster of universal proportions.

One Small Step

Scattered throughout the galaxy are Gateways capable of transporting matter and energy across unfathomable distances. The technology responsible for the Gateways has been lost for at least ten millennia, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be found again… . Having defeated the hostile computer program guarding an abandoned Kalandan outpost, Kirk and his crew are exploring the artificial planetoid in hopes of discovering the secret of an ancient apparatus that has hurled the Starship Enterprise over nearly a thousand light years. Unfortunately, the reactivated Gateway has attracted the attention and avarice of various alien explorers, including a mysterious race who claim to be none other than the enigmatic Kalandans themselves!

Their rediscovered secrets could change the future of space travel forever… the trouble is that noone knows what waits on the other side. Abandoned remnants of an extinct interstellar civilisation, the Gateways connect the Alpha Quadrant with the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Their rediscovery could revolutionise space travel… but it could also open the door to who knows what dangers from the other side. Twenty years ago, in the space near the planet of Belle Terre, a caravan of alien vessels disappeared into a gigantic Gate. Now the descendants of those aliens have returned, armed with incredible new weapons and abilities. Commander Nick Keller of the USS Challenger, already struggling to maintain peace in a volatile sector of space, is all that stands in the path of a fleet of invaders driven by a hostile and fanatical agenda. Doors Into Chaos

GATEWAYS Doors Into Chaos Summoned to an emergency briefing at Starfleet Headquarters, Captain Jean Luc Picard is stunned to discover that the legendary Iconians have returned at last, and are offering to sell the secrets of their advanced technology to the Federation. To prove their sincerity, they have reactivated their long abandoned Gateways, but the results have been strife and chaos throughout the entire Alpha Quadrant. Now Picard and his crew must contend with feuding Klingons and Romulans as the captain seeks to discover the sinister truth behind the Iconians’ unexpected rebirth!

No Man’s Land

Back home in the Alpha Quadrant, Starfleet can devote all its considerable resources to coping with the Gateways crisis, but in the Delta Quadrant, there is only the Starship Voyager… . Just as Voyager enters an unusually hazardous region of space, the ship and its crew are confronted with a flood of lost and disoriented starships from all over the galaxy. Accidentally transported incredible distances by the unpredictable Gateways, the diverse alien castaways regard each other and Voyager with hostility and suspicion. Captain Kathryn Janeway suddenly finds herself struggling to hold together an extremely fractious fleet of dislocated alien vessels even as the newly awakened Gateways hold open the prospect of finally bringing her own ship home!

Missing for two hundred millennia, the legendary Iconians have returned, bringing with them the secret of interdimensional teleportation across vast interstellar distances. Awakened once more, their ancient Gateways are rewriting the map of the galaxy, and nowhere more than in the New Frontier& 174… . A century ago, the imperial Thallonians separated two feuding alien races, depositing each of them on a new world safely distant from that of their ancestral enemies. Now, however, the Gateways have made it possible for the long dormant blood feud to begin anew. Captain Mackenzie Calhoun of the U.S.S. Excalibur and his partner, Captain Elizabeth Shelby of the U.S.S. Trident, find themselves fighting a losing battle to keep the horrific violence from escalating, even as they gradually realize the catastrophic danger posed by the Gateways themselves!

What Lay Beyond

Created by the incalculably ancient Iconians, whose transcendent technology is quantum levels beyond that of the Federation and its allies, the Gateways offer instantaneous transport across unimaginable distances. Throughout the known galaxy, from Deep Space Nine to the New Frontier, from the Delta Quadrant to the bridge of the Starship Enterprise , the sudden reactivation of the Gateways has destabilized interstellar relations between planets and cultures previously separated by countless light years. Starfleet’s finest have coped with the crisis as best they can, but circumstances have forced several valiant commanders to leap through separate Gateways into the unknown. Captain James T. Kirk of the original Starship Enterprise Captain Jean Luc Picard of Star Trek: The Next Generation Colonel Kira Nerys of Deep Space Nine Captain Kathryn Janeway of the U.S.S. Voyager Captains Calhoun and Shelby of Star Trek : New Frontier Commander Nick Keller of the U.S.S. Challenger All of these heroes, for their own reasons, have taken the ultimate gamble: hurling themselves personally through a Gateway without any knowledge or forewarning of What Lay Beyond . Each must face their own unique challenge, struggling to find a way back to the ships and homes they left behind. And waiting behind at least one of the Gateways are the ageless Iconians themselves, the primordial architects of the mysterious portals causing chaos throughout the Milky Way galaxy. Where did they disappear to, many long eons ago, and what do they want now? The answer lies on the other side… . What Lay Beyond brings the Gateways saga to a spectacular finish, in an all star collaboration by six popular, bestselling Star Trek authors. Among them, Diane Carey, Peter David, Keith R.A. Decandido, Christie Golden, Robert Greenberger, and Susan Wright have written dozens of Star Trek novels. This is their first mega collaboration.

In the midst of escalating political tensions among the Klingons, the Romulans, and the Federation, Starfleet goes forward with the inaugural flight of Universe, a prototype starship that promises to revolutionize space exploration. But the Universe experiment results in disaster, ravaging a region of space dangerously close to the Romulan Star Empire, apparently confirming suspicions that the Federation has begun testing a weapon of mass destruction. As the military buildup accelerates on both sides of the Neutral Zone, Captain John Harriman of the Federation flagship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701 B is fated for a final confrontation with his oldest enemy at a flashpoint in history with the Beta Quadrant one wrong move from the outbreak of total war.

The Art of the Impossible

THE YEARS ARE 2328 2346 To the Cardassians, it is a point of pride. To the Klingons, a matter of honor. But the eighteen year cold war between these two empires euphemistically remembered in later years as the Betreka Nebula ‘Incident’ creates a vortex of politics, diplomacy, and counterintelligence that will define an age, and shape the future. What begins as a discovery that would enable the Klingon Empire to reclaim a lost piece of its past becomes a prolonged struggle with the rapidly expanding Cardassian Union, which has claimed dominion over a region of space that the Klingons hold sacred. Enter the Federation, whose desire to preserve interstellar stability leads Ambassador Curzon Dax to broker a controversial and tenuous peace one that is not without opponents, including Lieutenant Elias Vaughn of Starfleet special ops. But there are wheels within wheels to the drama unfolding in the Betreka Nebula. Within the shadowy rooms of the Cardassian Obsidian Order, Klingon Imperial Intelligence, and even the Romulan Tal Shiar, secret scales are being balanced and for every gain made for the sake of peace, there will come a loss.

Well of Souls

THE YEAR IS 2336 For twelve years, she was captain of the Federation’s flagship. But while her exploits as commander of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701 C are legend, little has been revealed about Rachel Garrett, her vessel, or the unusual men and women of her crew. Until now. When the archaeological find of the decade offers possible hints about an earlier Cardassian civilization, it attracts not merely those seeking to quench their thirst for knowledge, but also parties with far less noble interests. Among the latter is the Asfar Qatala, a notorious criminal cartel with a disturbing connection to one of the Enterprise’s highest ranking officers. Now Captain Garrett and her crew are swept into a maelstrom of kidnapping, extortion, and murder as well as a desperate, secret struggle between the Qatala and its chief rival, the fledgling Orion Syndicate. And beneath the surface of the frozen world on which the proto Cardassian discovery was made, another drama is playing out that will force Garrett to make the most difficult decision of her career… amid ruins reputed to link the living with the ancient dead.

The Buried Age

Jean Luc Picard. His name has gone down in legend as the captain of the U.S.S. Stargazer and two starships Enterprise. But the nine years of his life leading up to the inaugural mission of the U.S.S. EnterpriseTM to Farpoint Station have remained a mystery until now, as Picard’s lost era is finally unearthed. Following the loss of the Stargazer and the brutal court martial that resulted, Picard no longer sees a future for himself in Starfleet. Turning to his other love, archaeology, he embarks on a quest to rediscover a buried age of ancient galactic history… and awakens a living survivor of that era: a striking, mysterious woman frozen in time since before the rise of Earth’s dinosaurs. But this powerful immortal has a secret of cataclysmic proportions, and her plans will take Picard aided along the way by a brilliant but naive android, an insightful Betazoid, and an enigmatic El Aurian to the heights of passion, the depths of betrayal, and the farthest reaches of explored space.

A Time to Be Born

On the cusp of their epic battle with Shinzon, many of Captain Jean Luc Picard’s long time crew were heading for new assignments and new challenges. Among the changes were William Riker’s promotion to captain and his new command, Riker’s marriage to Counselor Deanna Troi, and Dr. Beverly Crusher’s new career at Starfleet Medical. But the story of what set them on a path away from the Starship Enterprise has never been told. UNTIL NOW. The site of one of the Dominion War’s fiercest battles, the Rashanar Sector now contains a vast interstellar graveyard littered with the lifeless hulks of hundreds of devastated starships. The explosive destruction of so many varied warp drives has severely distorted the space time continuum in this region, resulting in dangerous unleashed energies and bizarre gravitational anomalies. The Enterprise has been assigned to patrol the perimeter of the danger zone, while other vessels carry out the difficult and highly hazardous task of retrieving the bodies of the dead from the wrecked warships. To some alien races, the former battleground is hallowed space. To others, including the rapacious Androssi, it is a scavenger’s paradise, ripe for salvage. None expect this ship’s graveyard to hold a deadly secret that will force the android Data to make a heart wrenching decision about the path his life will take and that will endanger not only the Enterprise, but Picard’s future in Starfleet.

Gods of Night

Half a decade after the Dominion War and more than a year after the rise and fall of Praetor Shinzon, the galaxy’s greatest scourge returns to wreak havoc upon the Federation and this time its goal is nothing less than total annihilation. Elsewhere, deep in the Gamma Quadrant, an ancient mystery is solved. One of Earth’s first generation of starships, lost for centuries, has been found dead and empty on a desolate planet. But its discovery so far from home has raised disturbing questions, and the answers harken back to a struggle for survival that once tested a captain and her crew to the limits of their humanity. From that terrifying flashpoint begins an apocalyptic odyssey that will reach across time and space to reveal the past, define the future, and show three captains Jean Luc Picard of the U.S.S. The soldiers of Armageddon are on the march, laying waste to worlds in their passage. An audacious plan could stop them forever, but it carries risks that one starship captain is unwilling to take. For Captain William Riker, that choice has already been made. Haunted by the memories of those he was forced to leave behind, he must jeopardize all that he has left in a desperate bid to save the Federation. For Captain Ezri Dax, whose impetuous youth is balanced by the wisdom of many lifetimes, the choice is a simple one: there is no going back only forward to whatever future awaits them. But for those who, millennia ago, had no choice… this is the hour of their final, inescapable destiny.

Surrounded by treachery and rumors of revolt, he can trust no one except Captain Jean Luc Picard and Lieutenant Worf of the ‘U.S.S. EnterpriseTM. The past collides with the present as the true story of the historical Kahless sparks a battle for control of the entire Klingon Empire. While waiting for his new ship, Captain Picard has gone with Lieutenant Worf on a delicate diplomatic mission to the Cardassian Empire. In defiance of Starfleet Command, he will take Starfleet’s newest, strongest starship and strike at the heart of the newly aggressive Klingon Empire. Captain Picard’s negotiations proceed smoothly until he discovers that a hate crazed Klingon commander Captain Bateson’s archenemy from ninety years ago has taken the ‘Enterprise’ from Bateson and launched a vicious attack on Cardassia Prime. Imzadi II: Triangle

Even in the 24th century, three is definitely a crowd. Imzadi: to the people of the planet Betazed, including Counselor Deanna Troi of the Starship Enterprise , it means ‘beloved’ and denotes a special closeness that can never be truly broken. Or can it? In his acclaimed earlier novel, Imzadi, bestselling author Peter David explored the special bond between Deanna Troi and Commander William T. Riker. It revealed new facets of their long and intimate relationship and put that bond to its ultimate test in a powerful and unforgettable story that remains one of the most popular Star Trek adventures ever published. Imzadi was a New York Times bestseller in both hardcover and paperback. Now David examines the heart of Deanna Troi from an altogether different perspective, as he reveals for the first time the full story of Troi’s troubled romance with Lieutenant Commander Worf. At first glance, they cannot be more different. She is an empath, gentle and acutely sensitive to the needs and feelings of others. But does Worf’s future truly lie with Deanna… or on a distant outpost called Deep Space 9 ? And whom indeed shall Troi ultimately call ‘imzadi’? Imzadi II is a compelling story, an untold chapter in the history of the Starship Enterprise .

But when Doctor Crusher leaves her position on the Enterprise to become the chief medical officer of Starfleet, the brightest light in Picard’s life is taken from him. And he has hardly resigned himself to his loss when he learns that Beverly has been declared missing in action on a distant planet and presumed dead. Kevratas is a bleak, frozen world on the far side of the Romulan Neutral Zone where the Federation has become the plague ravaged natives’ only real hope of survival and freedom. Starfleet has no recourse but to send in another team to try to save the Kevrata and Picard is the natural choice. Critical to the success of his mission are two colleagues who served under him when he commanded the Starship Stargazer Pug Joseph, a man with a past to live down, and Doctor Carter Greyhorse, who has served time for attempted murder as well as a Romulan who left his people years earlier and never expected to return. Together, they follow the trail of Beverly Crusher to Kevratas, determined to succeed where the doctor failed. On the Romulan homeworld, meanwhile, the political vacuum created by the demise of Praetor Shinzon has been filled by his staunchest supporter, Senator Tal’aura. But there are those who oppose her, including Commander Donatra and the warbird fleets under her command, because of the way Tal’aura has mishandled rebellions on the Empire’s subject worlds. So begins a desperate struggle not only for the freedom of the long oppressed Kevrata but also for the soul of the Romulan Empire. Before it’s over, destinies will be forged and shattered, the Empire will be shaken to its ancient foundations, and Jean Luc Picard’s life will be changed… forever.

Picard believes she is wrong, and that if the Enterprise doesn’t act the entire Federation will be under the domination of its most oppressive enemy.

The Sky’s the Limit

Taking its title from the final words spoken by Captain Jean Luc Picard in the series finale, The Sky’s the Limit is a collection of brand new original stories spanning and celebrating the entire twenty year history of the most popular and successful Trek series of all. Stories by a variety of authors some old favourites, some new set during the events of the television series give the authentic feel of a newly discovered ‘missing season’ of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Nearly two decades ago, Jean Luc Picard took command of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701 D. The captain knew it was an honor without equal. His new command bore the name of Enterprise. The people who had commanded other like named starships had gone down in Starfleet’s annals. Some officers would be intimidated, but they would not have been given command of Enterprise.

On her first mission, the Enterprise was sent to Farpoint Station. A simple, straightforward investigation. Perfect for a crew that had never served together. Then there was Q. An omnipotent lifeform that seemed bent on placing obstacle after obstacle in the ship’s and in particular in Picard’s way. And it hadn’t ended with that first mission. When he was least expected, Q would appear. Pushing, prodding, testing. At times needling captain and crew with seemingly silly, pointless, and maddening trifles. Then it would turn all too serious, and the survival of Picard’s crew was in Q’s hands.

Why was it today that Picard was remembering the day he took command of the Enterprise D? Now he commanded a new ship, the Enterprise E. His crew was different. There was nothing about Gorsach that in the least resembled Farpoint. But Picard couldn’t shake the feeling that something all too familiar was going on. All too awful. All too Q.

Before Dishonor

An enemy so intractable that it cannot be reasoned with. The entire race thinks with one mind and strives toward one purpose: to add our biological distinctiveness to their own and wipe out individuality, to make every living thing Borg. In over two centuries, the Federation has never encountered a greater threat. Twice Starfleet assembled and threw countless starships to stand against them. The Borg were stopped, the price paid in blood. Humanity breathed a sigh of relief, assuming it was safe. And with the destruction of the transwarp conduits, the Federation believed that the killing blow had finally been struck against the Borg. Driven to the point of extinction, the Borg continue to fight for their very existence, for their culture. They will not be denied. They must not be stopped. The old rules and assumptions regarding how the Collective should act have been dismissed. Now the Borg kill first, assimilate later. When the Enterprise manages to thwart them once again, the Borg turn inward. The dark places that even the drones never realized existed are turned outward against the enemy they have never been able to defeat. What is revealed is the thing that no one believed the Borg could do.

Greater Than the Sum

The Starship Rhea has discovered a cluster of carbon planets that seems to be the source of the quantum energies rippling through a section of space. A landing party finds unusual life forms inhabiting one of the planets. One officer, Lieutenant T’Ryssa Chen a half Vulcan makes a tenuous connection with them. But before any progress can be made, the Rhea comes under attack from the Einstein a Starfleet vessel now controlled by the Borg. The landing party can only listen in horror as their comrades are assimilated. The Borg descend to the planet, and just as Chen accepts that she will be assimilated, the lieutenant is whisked two thousand light years away. A quantum slipstream instantaneous transportation is controlled by these beings in the cluster, and in the heart of the cluster there is now a Borg ship. Cut off from the rest of the Borg collective, the Einstein cannot be allowed to rejoin it. For the sake of humanity, the Borg cannot gain access to quantum slipstream technology. Starfleet Command gives Captain Picard carte blanche: do whatever he must to help the beings in the cluster, and stop the Einstein no matter the cost.

Indistinguishable from Magic

The most talented Starfleet engineers of two generations unite to solve a two hundred year old technological mystery that turns out to be only the beginning of a wider quest. With the support of Guinan and Nog, as well as the crew of the U.S.S. Challenger, Geordi La Forge and Montgomery Scott soon find themselves drawn into a larger, deadlier, and far more personal adventure. Helped by old friends and hindered by old enemies, their investigation will come to threaten everything they hold dear. Seeking out the new, and going where no one has gonebefore, Geordi, Scotty, and Guinan find that their pasts are very much of the present, and must determine whether any sufficiently advanced technology is really Indistinguishable from Magic .

Encounter at Farpoint

WHERE THE ADVENTURE BEGAN… CAPTAIN’S LOG, STARDATE 41254.7: The U.S.S. Enterprise is en route to Cygnus IV the edge of the known galaxy. There, we will rendezvous with the ship’s new first officer and the other command personnel and proceed with out mission: discover the truth about Farpoint Station, a starbase facility built by the inhabitants of Cygnus IV, a starbase of unparalleled size and complexity… and infinite mystery. And the success or failure of this, our first mission together, may well determine the course of human exploration across the galaxy for centuries to come…

Unification

Picard and the Enterprise crew are sent to investigate what appears to be the defection of Ambassador Spock to Romulus. Captain Picard and Lt. Cmdr. Data disguise themselves as Romulans and are transported to Romulus. There they discover that Spock is actually attempting the re Unification of Vulcan and Romulus, and working with a Romulan underground movement. Picard’s Romulan nemesis, Command Sela, reappears and captures the Starfleet officers and the ambassador, all as part of a plan to conquer Vulcan. The three must escape from their Romulan prison and foil the Sela’s plans for invasion.

In the tradition of UNIFICATION, here is the story that fans of the original STAR TREK series and STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION have been clamoring for Montgomery Scott’s return to the Star Trek universe and his encounter with the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701 D. Missing in space for seventy five years, Scotty manages to survive against incredible odds, only to be found by the crew of the Starship Enterprise . Though rescued, Scotty soon finds himself lost in a world that he barely recognizes, a world that has passed him by… But the adventure is not over for Captain Scott who must do the impossible when the new U.S.S. Enterprise faces a very old danger in a remote sector of space. This time, Captain Picard and his crew will need more than all of their courage and all of their skills to save the great Starship from destruction. This time, they will need a miracle worker.

The Borg are back and nastier than ever. No longer mindless, inhuman drones but cyborg soldiers on a mission to assimilate all intelligent life, their new goal is the complete destruction of the Federation. And in the midst of facing the Borg again, Captain Picard learns that he may be the cause of the change. Commander Data is changing as well. For the first time in his life, Data feels a genuine emotion and that emotion is deadly, destructive rage. When it is revealed that the Borg are commanded by an old enemy out of Data’s past, Data must choose between his allegiance tot he Federation and the one thing he wants above all else…

All Good Things…

Seven years ago, Captain Jean Luc Picard first faced the judgment of the Q Continuum a race of beings with God like powers over time and space who presumed to gauge humanity’s fitness to exist in the galaxy. Seven years ago they suspended judgment, but now a decision has been reached: The human race will be eliminated, not only in the present, but throughout time. Humanity will never have existed at all. The only chance to save mankind lies with Captain Picard. An old enemy has granted him the power to revisit his life as it was seven years before, and to experience his life twenty five years in the future. With the help of friendships that span time and space, Picard struggles to defeat the plans of the Q Continuum. But even as he fights to save the human race from total extinction, he has been set up to be the unwitting agent of mankind’s destruction. In an effort to save humanity, Picard must sacrifice himself and all those he commands and if their sacrifice fails all mankind is doomed.

Star Trek is a series of episodes initially divided into three seasons and produced by America based producer Gene Roddenberry which was an experiment of its own kind and later set the legend for many people. Star Trek is highly appraised by many people around the world for its futuristic thinking as per the time and era it was created in. There are huge crowds at its big conventions where people can meet their favorite stars and discuss episodes and theories with other people. The genre of science fiction got a new meaning through this show and the ideas used in each episode. While initially this show was not quite famous and accepted widely it stopped producing once CBS cancelled it in 1969 after which the show got quite famous through a process known as syndicate broadcasting where a channel can buy the original rights of a television show to broadcast it as per their timings. Soon it grew famous and remained a legacy throughout the 70’s becoming a huge hit and a cult classic with people known as trekkies devoted to each and every aspect of the show and having great knowledge about it. Such people regularly attend the meetings and events of Star Trek and maintain an amazing fan base for the series at all times.

Storyline of the books: The story of the episodes of the Star Trek book series originally released are adventures of the starship which travels through a part of the milky way galaxy and is known as the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). The crew members aboard the space ship are the leading captain of the crew James T. Kirk whose role is played by William Shatner who became quite famous for his acting through the show along with other cast once the show gained popularity. Other members of the crew are First officer and science officer Spock played by Leonard Nimoy and is often compared with the crew’s captain Kirk, another crew member is the chief medical officer Leonard McCoy who is played by DeForest Kelly.

The storyline of the show is based about the year 2260’s and the time is measured in startime in the series. The initial series got the name after its fame as Star Trek: The Original Series so that it always stands out amongst the massive fan along with media franchise. Captain Kirk often states the purpose of the series in the beginning of the episodes in the world renowned series by introducing the show as voyages of the Starship Enterprise and its mission for five years is to go on an exploratory mission on different planets in order to find and research them and seek out new life and civilizations primarily by going where no human has gone previously.

Creation of Star Trek: Gene Roddenberry, finished drafting a short plot for a series based on science fiction on March 11th 1964, which he referred to as Star Trek and was set aboard a spaceship on the 23rd century. While his influences to the idea of Star Trek as accepted by Roddenberry himself include the stories featuring spaceship Space Beagle written by A. E. van Vogt along with Marathon which is a series of stories written by Eric Brand Russell along with the film Forbidden Planet launched in 1956.

While the works of Roddenberry are one of their kind and imprinted in history people have been seen debating his television series similar to a television series Rocky Jones, Space Ranger launched in 1956 which has similar elements to that of Star Trek along with a few technologies displayed on the show as well. While Roddenberry accepts deriving elements for his show from the Horatio Hornblower novels which depict a daring sea captain who goes on a journey for a noble purpose and overcomes various feats using his authority and daring and Roddenberry sometimes refers Captain Kirk by referring to him as Horatio Hornblower in Space.

Roddenberry had a good share of experience in writing successfully crafted television series which depicted his fine artistic skills through their popularity in the decades following 1960 and 1950. Except Star Trek: Deep Space Nine all the later movies based on Star Trek are based around the idea originally used by Roddenberry in the original series which depicted each episode as having a separate storyline contained within a single episode through a different adventure. In short the script was drafted such that each episode is a new adventure of the ship at a new location while their main motive remains carrying on at a slower pace. Thus, any person can view an episode as each episode has its own different story and is quite independent of others.

Books published in Star Trek: James Blish was the first person to write Star Trek books through short stories for each episode into one book. He wrote total 11 books based on the three seasons of original Star Trek episodes. The books were quite famous once the show gained popularity and Bantam Books republished Blish’s books in three volumes one for each season. There was an acknowledgement stating that after Star Trek 7 or Star Trek 8 the credit for writing Star Trek novels goes to his wife and mother J. A. Lawrence who ghost wrote the books for him. A short story written by Blish’s wife known as Mudd’s Angels was published with the book. The Star Trek books were published from 1967 to 1975 based on rough initial drafts for the show and initially they were not referenced to the show since James Blish was based in United Kingdom and the show had not yet been aired there.

With time the fans have grown for the show and books and people and experts often state the phenomenon of Star Trek as ever growing with time and people are found in huge crowds at the premiering of new episodes, movies, comics, books, graphic novels etc. at the Star Trek conventions. There are new experiments done by a variety of writer and a number of franchised shows for Star Trek have been released along with books over time. Many of the Star Trek books and comics along with shows cover the original show in an enhanced or detailed manner there are also a vivid variety of cases where people have based the book on a show or with their unique inputs. Some famous fan or company based books have also become the plotline of famous Star Trek movies or stories while some comics and book series of star trek are genuinely famous for their writing style and regular updates. Many of these franchised books do not relate to the original series in many aspects along with the plotline and there is a huge variety to choose from.

What to Choose: While there are a number of options available to the readers beginning with the initial novels of Blish are the best idea as it gives the starting plot of the story thought by the creator at that point. There are also a huge number of famous and appraised novels created by fans and other companies along with a wide array of books which grow in number each week and many of these books are quite impressive.

Screen Rant

The 10 best star trek: the next generation novels, according to goodreads.

Star Trek The Next Generation spawned a plethora of great books. These are the 10 best Star Trek TNG novels, according to Goodreads.

Even though the TV show ran for seven seasons and had four feature films follow it, its devotees still clamored for more of  Star Trek: The Next Generation . Luckily for them, the series was accompanied by a plethora of novels that further explored the galaxy in the time of  TNG .

RELATED: The Best Character In Each Season Of Star Trek TNG

Whether they were continuations of classic episodes or stories with fan-favorite characters, some of the  TNG  novels rivaled even the best episodes of the series. With a wealth of books to choose from, users on Goodreads assembled an easy to use list that compiled their favorite novels in the  TNG  universe.

Masks (1991) - 3.50

Riker and Picard look on from the cover of Masks

Diplomacy is usually at the heart of many  Star Trek  stories, and the novel  Masks  put an interesting spin on interplanetary relations. In an attempt to establish diplomatic relations on the planet Lorca, Picard leads an away team that has to assimilate into Lorca's feudal culture. Unbeknownst to the crew of the Enterprise, a madman has designs at taking over the ship and ruling Lorca as its leader.

The most interesting aspect of John Vornholt's  Masks  is the culture of the planet Lorca. Their mask based culture is used to show their class system and it is fascinating seeing the enlightened Enterprise crew attempt to reconcile their modern beliefs with antiquated ideas.

Power Hungry (1989) - 3.92

Riker and Troi look on from the cover of Power Hungry

The stakes rise to a planetary scale in  Power Hungry,  and the Enterprise is caught in a battle between doing what is right and what is good. Tasked with delivering important famine relief to the planet Thiopa, Captain Picard struggles to find common ground with the planet's dictatorial government. Knowing that giving the government the supplies will not help the people, Picard must find a way to convince the government to change their ways.

Like the best episodes of  The Next Generation ,  Power Hungry  hinges upon a moral dilemma with humongous implications. Captain Picard's resolve is tested greatly, and the scope of the conflict keeps the reader on the edge of their seat as Howard Weinstein elevates the conflict throughout the book.

Strike Zone (1989) - 3.54

Picard, a Klingon, and Wesley Crusher look on from the cover of Strike Zone

Science fiction veteran Peter David penned his first  Trek  novel with the action packed  Strike Zone . The Enterprise finds itself mediating a dispute between the Klingon empire and the Kreel, an alien race that has warred with the Klingons for ages. Unlike the past though, the Kreel have stumbled across mysterious weapons that make them more powerful than anyone could imagine.

Simultaneously introducing the Kreel, and making them one of the most powerful aliens in  Star Trek , was a brilliant choice by David that makes the conflict more dangerous. The book weaves its two narratives well, and sees Picard placed in a diplomatic role while also investigating the Kreel's strange weapons.

Survivors (1989) - 3.51

Tasha Yar and Data look on from the cover of Survivors

Even though she was written off the show during the first season, Survivors by Jean Lorrah   told a compelling Tasha Yar story. The Enterprise is sent to a remote colony to mediate a rebellion that threatens to overthrow the planet. On the mission, Data and Yar get the bottom of the conflict and also take time to reflect on Tasha Yar's own difficult life.

RELATED: The 10 Most Frightening Episodes Of Star Trek TNG

The shocking death of Tasha Yar robbed fans of a chance to learn more about the character, but  Survivors  does an excellent job of filling in the gaps. Heaping additional tragedy on the story, Yar's backstory adds even more intrigue to her short tenure on the show.

The Children Of Hamlin (1988) - 3.43

Dr. Crusher poses on the cover of Children of Hamlin

Author Carmen Carter delivered one of the darkest  Star Trek  stories of all time when writing  The Children of Hamlin . Fifty years after an outpost full of children was kidnapped, the aliens that committed the crime return to the sector in search of the precious metals they need. Prepared for their arrival, the crew of the Enterprise must stop the Choraii from repeating their evil performance.

Alluding to the ancient fairy tale of the Pied Piper,  The Children of Hamlin takes its silly premise seriously. Like the original tale, the story is frightening and the implications are truly sinister. The suspense is kept high as the crew must race against time to stop a repeat of the massacre of half a century previous.

The Peacekeepers (1988) - 3.28

Worf, Picard, and Troi look on from the cover of Peacekeepers

The theme that author Gene DeWeese runs through the novel  The Peacekeepers  is that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Data and La Forge are accidentally transported light years from the Enterprise and onto a space station that rules the planet below it with an iron fist. Unfortunately for the two crew members, their arrival threatens to spark a planet wide conflict.

Much in the same way that the show changed over the years , the novels also grew more complicated as they progressed.  The Peacekeepers  however, is one of the earliest  TNG  novels and is rather simple with its approach to the story. While it does feature a lot of action, it lacks a lot of the social commentary that  Trek  fans are familiar with.

Ghost Ship (1988) - 3.18

Commander Riker looks on from the cover of Ghost Ship

For the very first  TNG  novel, author Diane Carey delivered a frightening tale that spanned centuries. Counselor Troi is tortured by a nightmare in which she witnesses a Russian space crew from the 1990s being absorbed by a mysterious entity. Soon the Enterprise is threatened by the same entity and they must find a way to avoid the same fate as the Russian crew.

Its dated premise aside,  Ghost Ship  finds an interesting way to utilize Counselor Troi as a character, and her communication skills are integral to the plot. The frightening threat of assimilation keeps the story going, and the entity in the book is one of the most powerful villains that the crew has ever faced .

Imzadi (1992) - 3.92

Troi and two versions of Riker look on from the cover of Imzadi

Peter David explored one of  The Next Generation 's most powerful romances in the epic sized novel  Imzadi . Drawing from their past experience that forever linked them romantically, Commander Riker goes on an epic, time and space spanning quest to rescue Deanna Troi after she dies in a tragic accident.

RELATED: 10 Star Trek TNG Guest Characters Who Should Have Had A Follow Up Episode, Ranked

Not only does the novel tell an exciting story, but it also provides interesting background for Riker and Troi's notoriously inconsistent relationship in the show. Leaving romance aside, Riker's adventure is on an epic scale and his morals are pushed to their very limit by his love for Troi.

Vendetta (1991) - 3.83

Guinan looks at Picard while a Borg looms in the background from Vendetta

Showing he could tackle any kind of  Trek  story in yet another epic sized novel, author Peter David reintroduced one of the most fearsome foes from  TNG . The Enterprise responds to a distress signal from a planet that is under siege by the Borg. The planet's lone survivor eventually develops a way to eliminate the Borg, but with a terrible price.

With a plot eerily similar to the episode "I,Borg",  Vendetta  isn't necessarily the most original story in the novel catalogue. What it lacks in originality it makes up for in its great characterization and fast paced plot. Despite being one of the longest  Trek  books, its length feels earned by great writing.

A Rock And A Hard Place (1990) - 3.63

star trek tng book order

Author Peter David skillfully balances two great plots in  A Rock and a Hard Place , and each thread is strong enough to stand alone as its own story. The terraforming effort on the planet Paradise falls behind schedule and Commander Riker is dispatched to assist. To temporarily replace him as first officer, a volatile commander is reassigned and conflicts arise aboard the ship.

The novel serves Riker's character very well, and shows that he is not only a competent leader, but also irreplaceable on the Enterprise. The mystery that Riker investigates on Paradise is rather boilerplate, but the combination of his plot with the b-plot surrounding his replacement, keeps the book moving. Ultimately, the best compliment that can be paid to any  Trek  books is that it reads like a great episode of the series, and that is certainly true with  A Rock and a Hard Place .

Mission to Horatius

Mission to Horatius , the first Trek novel

Through a licensing process similar to those granted to create collectibles , comics , and games , Paramount Pictures has granted the rights to market Star Trek stories and books of various sorts through a number of different publishers, beginning in 1967 with a series based on Star Trek: The Original Series .

With the success of the Star Trek films and Star Trek: The Next Generation , a licensing office associated with the productions took stricter control of the franchise's image. Although writers of Star Trek publications were unlimited by TV budget and studio set constraints, they were discouraged from creating depictions that varied from the style and details of the franchise, as seen in filmed productions. Previous novels of the 1960s, 70s, and early 80s tend to vary from canon more than later series. Since most novels are produced by editors and writers not affiliated with franchise production staff , filmed productions generally regard the events and situations in most novelizations as completely apocryphal.

It should be noted that certain publications written by creators of Star Trek 's various series are sometimes referenced in later episodes of those series. Somewhat paradoxically, the novels themselves remain apocryphal in such cases while whatever information was mentioned on-screen becomes canon .

Patrick Stewart Said "Not Enough Screwing Or Shooting" For Captain Picard On Star Trek: TNG

  • Patrick Stewart felt Captain Picard should have had more action scenes and romantic encounters in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
  • Stewart's wish was fulfilled in later seasons of TNG, where Picard had more intense situations and romantic storylines.
  • Picard truly became an action hero in the TNG movies, where he had more action scenes and a new romance with a Ba'ku woman.

Patrick Stewart thought Captain Jean-Luc Picard should've seen more action in Star Trek: The Next Generation . As the commander of the USS Enterprise-D, Captain Picard turned out to be a very different type of Captain compared to James T. Kirk (William Shatner). On Star Trek: The Original Series , Kirk famously romanced many different women, both alien and human, and got into his fair share of fights. If Kirk was an action star, then Picard was a diplomat, preferring to solve problems with words rather than conflict . While this worked for the type of show TNG wanted to be, it seems Patrick Stewart wanted Picard to take a page out of Kirk's book.

During the early days of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1 , Patrick Stewart wanted to keep things serious on set. Over time, however, the rest of the boisterous cast members wore off on Stewart as well. The TNG cast earned a reputation for their on-set antics, and Stewart wanted to bring some of that same energy into the show. TNG did not truly begin firing on all cylinders until season 3 , and from that point on, Picard and the Enterprise-D crew begin to find themselves in more intense situations.

How To Watch All Star Trek TV Shows In Timeline Order

Patrick stewart wanted picard to have more fun in star trek: tng, captain picard had more romances and action scenes as tng progressed..

In The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross, screenwriter Ronald D. Moore describes a conversation he had with Patrick Stewart on the set of TNG season 3, episode 5, "The Bonding." Read his quote below:

The next time I was there I came to see them shooting my episode ["The Bonding"]. Richard [Arnold, archivist] took me down to the set, and they were filming a scene, and Patrick [Stewart] was there, and, at one point, Richard called Patrick over and introduced him to me and said, 'This is Ron Moore, he wrote this episode.' Patrick said, 'Oh, lovely to meet you. It’s a marvelous script. Just so delighted. So are you writing another one for us?' And I said, 'Yes, as a matter of fact, I’m writing one about this Romulan defector.' And he said, 'Oh, just marvelous, can’t wait to read it. Just bear one thing in mind: The captain doesn’t do nearly enough screwing and shooting on this show.'

In many ways, Patrick Stewart got his wish. Later, in TNG season 3, episode 19, "Captain's Holiday," Picard meets a woman named Vash (Jennifer Hetrick), who pulls Picard into an archeological adventure. Vash brings out a different side of Picard and he finds himself developing feelings for her despite their very different lifestyles. In one of Captain Picard's best episodes , TNG season 6, episode 18, "Starship Mine," Jean-Luc gets to channel his inner John McClane from Die Hard as he singlehandedly saves the Starship Enterprise from would-be thieves . While Picard may not have had as many romances or been involved in as many phaser fights as Kirk, the Enterprise-D captain had his action-hero moments, too.

Captain Picard Got To Do More "Screwing & Shooting" In The TNG Movies

Star trek: first contact allowed picard to be a true action hero..

Patrick Stewart wanted Picard to have his action hero moment, and while he had some action scenes on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Picard truly became an action hero in the TNG films. Star Trek Generations gave Picard the chance to meet Captain Kirk and save the galaxy alongside the Enterprise's iconic former captain. Though Generations had its fair share of action, Star Trek: First Contact is a true sci-fi action film from start to finish . First Contact pits Captain Picard against the Borg, and introduces one of Star Trek's best villains in the Borg Queen (Alice Krige).

In the next TNG film, Star Trek: Insurrection , Picard gets to have a new romance with a Ba'ku woman named Anij (Donna Murphy). Although the romance only lasts for the length of the film, it's a sweet love story added to the quieter plot of Insurrection . Picard didn't have as many romances as Captain Kirk, but Jean-Luc was a more reserved person who had difficulty opening up to people . Based on the latter half of TNG , as well as the TNG films, it seems somebody listened to Patrick Stewart's request for more action scenes and more romance. Jean-Luc Picard was always diplomatic on Star Trek: The Next Generation , but that doesn't mean he couldn't also be an action hero sometimes.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is available to stream on Paramount+. The TNG films are available on Max.
