Asia Tours & Vacations
Welcome to Asia, the most populous, energetic and contradictory continent on earth.
Across one vast landmass you will find almost everything. Sci-fi skyscrapers in Japan , whitewashed mountain monasteries, honking moped shoals and silent Taoist temples, neon cityscapes and saffron-clad monks bent in prayer. If you’ve come for the familiar, you’re in for a surprise. You can munch deep-fried grasshoppers with white pepper in Thailand. Ride across the Mongolian tundra. Explore the rice paddy fields in Bali. Swim with Burmese sea-gypsies. You will begin to understand - this place is where ordinary goes to die.

Admire the iconic Great Wall of China
Feel the enormity of China's Great Wall, stretching as far as the eye can see through luscious green valleys. With some fragments built nearly 3000 years ago, the historical significance of this fortification is not to be missed. Tackle just a small length of this 21,000-kilometer UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wander through Angkor Wat
Take a journey to the world's largest religious monument and watch the sunrise onto the stillness of the Angkor Wat temple complex. The crumbling mosey portions of the Hindu turned Buddhist structures hold an eerie beauty that will stir you to the very core.
Enjoy some quality 'Me' time in Thailand
Land of smiles, cheap cocktails and expert massages, a trip to Thailand is a chance to unwind. Spend days floating in the Gulf of Thailand and roaming through shopping markets, interrupted only by fragrant Panang curries and fresh coconuts to cool you down.
Sail Halong Bay
Climb aboard a traditional wooden boat and take in the beauty of Vietnam's sea of limestone islands. The dramatic setting of Halong Bay will dazzle as you drift slowly around the emerald waters past many families that call the water home. An essential part of Asia travel packages, it has been named one of the new natural wonders of the world.
Stroll down the busy streets of Tokyo
Home to almost 14-million, the streets of Tokyo buzz with an energy that is hard to resist. Navigate through the swarm of pedestrians at Shibuya Crossing and admire elaborate dress sense in Harajuku. Even those called by empty mountains will find joy in the scenes of Japan's capital.
Our top 5 things to do in Asia
This enormous content offers such a diverse banquet of experiences it can be hard to know where to begin. From the busy streets of Tokyo to the world's largest religious site found in Cambodia, we'll share the very best on our Asia vacation packages.
Temple of Heaven
The aptly named Temple of Heaven is a scene straight out of a mythical religious artwork. Stare up at the ceilings in the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests where a patchwork of color honors the seasons of the year. With construction finishing in the year 1420, this site holds limitless cultural significance.
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
Pay tribute to the victims of Cambodia's brutal genocide that saw a quarter of its population lost in the early 1970's. The photos of those lost haunt the walls of Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, housed in a building that was once a center for prison and interrogation.
Tokyo National Museum
Take an artistic journey along the Silk Road to ancient and medieval days gone by at Tokyo National Museum, the 6th largest art museum in the world. Hosting many of Japan's national treasures and religious artworks with immense cultural significance, allow a whole day to soak up all this monument has to offer.
Best museums in Asia
A tapestry of history, art and modern culture are found peppered across this continent in its endless list of museums. These are just some of the places we'll visit on our Asia escorted tours.
With almost a thousand years of history held in a roll of seaweed, rice and raw fish, don't miss this important part of Japanese culture. Though it's now readily available in most parts of the world, you will find something special about the sushi experience in its homeland.
Pho has traveled a long way since it originated in the Nam Định province of Vietnam. Slurp down many bowls from lively street vendors and modern cafes, enjoying variations of the hot rice noodle broth covered in herbs. The country of Vietnam summed up in one soupy dish.
Peking Duck
Taste the Imperial era in slices of seasoned crispy skin duck. Best wrapped in thin pancakes with hoisin sauce and greens, this Chinese specialty is delicious whether consumed in a busy street market or upmarket restaurant.
Best food in Asia
It's hard to compete with the delicious fragrant dishes that originate across the expanses of Asia. With chopsticks in hand, we'll uncover the very best and learn of the many rituals and traditions woven into this continent's culinary banquet.
What to pack for Asia
Charcoal tablets
Many visit Asia armed with a pharmacy of pills for the chance of illness. Prevention is always better than cure; take a natural daily supplement such as charcoal to ensure nasties are evacuated from your system as quickly as possible.
Cool full-length clothes
Many parts of Asia boast a sunny tropical climate that's perfect for days flopped by a pool or sea. When exploring, it can be somewhat uncomfortable. Pack light, full-length clothes so you can respectfully visit religious sites without sweltering.
Hand sanitizer
During your time in Asia, you might not always have access to soap and water to wash up before eating. Keep hand sanitizer available for clean hands and a happy stomach.
Insect Repellent
A bug spray will be your best protection against mosquitos and any other creepy crawlies that call Asia home. Pack a bottle to avoid unnecessary itch or illness.
Water purification devices
The purification of water has come a long way in recent years. Make your way to a specialist travel shop to discuss bottles, gadgets and tablets that will ensure you stay hydrated without falling ill.

We made a private tour through South China in January 2024. Altogether Chengdu was the highlight. We had an incredible day at Emeishan. In Chengdu our guidewas Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.
Other highlights are too many to mention but here are a few Ken taking us to the Terracotta Warriors and our food tour in Xian was amazing,
Our day volunteering at the Panda Base was truly unforgettable. Helen, our guide, provided us with invaluable insights about Chengdu and the pandas, enriching our tour with her knowledge and expertise. We're grateful to Helen for accompanying us throughout the day and showcasing the highlights of China.
We had a booking with China Highlights through Silvia Ye who guarenteed a perfect organisation. In Chengdu our guide was Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.
We traveled to China during the Chinese new year and we had Kris as our guide and he is simply knowledgeable, helpful and great.
We visited Guilin for 2 days and stayed in the Guilin Waterfall hotel. Guilin was absolutely beautiful! Our guide, William, was very knowledgeable and kind! He taught us so much about Guilin and the surrounding area! We really enjoyed trying the specialty rice noodles of Guilin. Our highlight was the Li river cruise.
Amazing tour and the guide Mr. 贺霄 was very accommodating with our needs and request as we have bought our 2 years old with us. Well explained for all the place we visited. Any additional cost were informed well ahead and didn't felt any pressure if we opt not to go for additional detour. The trip was relaxing/ laid back/no rushing with zero shopping!
We had an amazing to China. Our tour guide Martin in Shanghai was super knowledgeable, caring and very flexible with our itinerary. When my wife got sick in the Shanghai, he was able to arrange an English-speaking doctor on the spot and took us to the clinic. On top of the that, Martin and the driver stayed with us at the clinic for the whole duration and drove us back to the hotel afterwards. His genuine concern for our welfare and willingness to go the extra mile did not go unnoticed, and we were deeply touched by his kindness and compassion.
Guilin, but mostly Yangshuo was at the tail end of our China adventure so there was a lot to live up to. Having a guide like Gary Wei meant that our trip ended on a high! We arrived in Guilin very late from an 11 hour train journey. Gary met us with gifts of fruit, sweet bread and cakes which was so unexpected and thoughtful.Gary's knowledge of the area was exceptional and his attention to us the same. He really took our children under his wing - even tuning in to annoying sibling rivalry and managing to keep the peace very well! Gary was our personal photographer at times and even our Taiji instructor, making a beautiful video of us all doing Taiji in a scenic setting :)The cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is definitely worth taking and we enjoyed our few nights in the area, riding bikes along the river, doing a cooking class and enjoying the scenery

Leaders in Responsible Travel
Responsible Travel practice is at the heart of every program that we offer in Asia. When you book one of our adventures you’re supporting true sustainability in the protection of local communities, natural environments and wildlife.
World Firsts
We proudly pioneered the first commercial cycle trip in China (1978) and also in Vietnam (1990), where our inaugural group was met personally by the president on arrival. We also offered the first trek along Japan’s Omine Pilgrimage Trail, and our unique Footsteps of Mongolia itinerary has been awarded one of National Geographic’s Top 50 Tours of a Lifetime.
Innovative Multi Active Itineraries
We’re always looking to provide new and unique experiences to get you off the well-trodden tourist trails. One of the best ways to do that is by joining one of our superb multi activity Asian adventures. Whether you enjoy cycling, hiking, kayaking or all of the above, travelling under your own steam is an incredibly rewarding way to explore the hidden gems of Asia.
Great Value
Quality services at the best prices make our adventures great value for money. We include bikes on our cycle adventures with back up vehicles in case you want to hang up your gloves for the day, kayaks to enable you to paddle to scenic spots, many meals and atmospheric accommodation. We also include national park fees, domestic flights and sleeper trains on most of our adventures.
Expert Guides
Our guides in the field are the real key to our success. From Tim Cope, one of the world’s leading Mongolia experts, to Stony Xiao, who has been guiding our trips in China for more than 15 years—our expert guides are the difference between a good and an excellent adventure.
From China to Japan and Mongolia to Thailand, Asia is blessed with natural and cultural beauty. Despite this beauty, dense populations, emerging economies and the industrialisation of many Asian countries make this area of the world particularly susceptible to environmental and cultural deterioration. To minimise our impact on the natural environment we practice the '7 Principals of Leave No Trace', in addition to supporting local economies by employing guides and staff from local communities. Our Animal Welfare Code of Conduct and Child Welfare Code of Conduct ensure the well-being of animals and children encountered on our adventures.
In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in 3 to 4 star properties that are centrally located, atmospheric, and reliable and where we have seen a good track record with traveller satisfaction over many years.
In various parts of Asia, we use quality lodges situated in natural environments. They offer comfortable, authentic accommodation that is clean, well maintained with good facilities and the best choice for the location that they are in.
Traditional style ryokans offer travellers a true taste of Japanese culture, sleeping on comfortable ‘futon’ bedding, laid out on tatami mat floors in wonderfully minimalistic rooms. Modified by sliding rice paper partitions, shoes are always left at the entrance upon entering these serene spaces.
Stay on board a traditional ‘junk’ boat, built entirely of aromatic wood with style and comfort that create the perfect balance of modern convenience and traditional Asian ambience. Cabins are twin share with private facilities. Features vary by vessel; however they may include a viewing platform, dining halls, panoramic windows and a library.
Enjoy fully supported camping with quality two person tents erected in scenic wilderness settings, a dining tent and a toilet tent with a sit toilet. Our crew looks after all logistics including food preparation as we focus on keeping our impact on the environment to a minimum.
During homestays, a local family opens their home providing wonderful insight into the local culture, cuisine and lifestyle. Expect simple but clean and comfortable communal lodgings with shared bathrooms and a warm reception from your hosts.
A ger is a circular felt tent used by the nomadic people of Mongolia and sometimes in Central Asia. Spacious with comfortable beds, our gers allow you to experience ‘life on the steppe’ as you interact with a local family. In the evening, candles illuminate the gers providing an atmospheric night time experience.

Asia Tours & Travel Guide
Asia Attractions & Landmarks Guide
By far the world’s largest continent, Asia is as diverse as it is large. China, Siberia, Nepal and Jordan are all parts of Asia, as are Sri Lanka, Iran, Mongolia and Dubai. So a trip to Asia can encompass many regions, cultures, religions – and decisions.
Given its size and breadth, taking a guided tour can be an efficient way to experience a taste of Asia. From Indonesia to India to Israel, Asia is varied, intriguing, and endlessly fascinating - it's difficult to know where to start.
Countries are in Asia
Asia is the largest continent on earth covering 30% of the world’s land. Asia is also home to 60% of humankind. The Asian continent stretches all the way from Japan in the east to Israel in the west, Indonesia in the south to Russia in the north. It includes every type of landscape and all levels of climate. However, grouping together parts of Asia can help keep it straight.
Asia is generally broken down into five different regions : Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Western Asia. Central Asia includes the countries around Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan; East Asia includes the countries near China and Korea, South Asia is the Indian Subcontinent and Afghanistan, Southeast Asia includes the tropical countries near Thailand and Indonesia, and Western Asia is Turkey and the region of the Middle East .
When looking for a tour to Asia, figuring out which region you want to visit should be your first option as traveling between regions of Asia can take a great deal of time and money.
Southeast Asia Tours
Likely the region of Asia that most people think of when they start looking for tours is Southeast Asia. With countries including Thailand , Indonesia , Malaysia , Vietnam , and Cambodia , this is one region that attracts all.
Southeast Asia itineraries are full of stunning landscapes, historic temples, bustling cities, and laid back beaches. In each of these countries you will be able to find a wide variety of activities to enjoy like shopping through the floating markets of Vietnam, walking the hallowed temples of Angkor Wat , or enjoying a smoothie bowl in Bali.
While visiting Southeast Asia can be a nice reprieve from the harsh winters of Europe and North America, make sure to visit when the weather is good. Southeast Asia can get extremely warm and most of the countries have monsoon seasons that you’ll want to avoid
Top Cities in Asia
Each city in Asia is extremely different and has its own flavor to it. Cities in Saudi Arabia and Turkey are very different than cities in Vietnam and the Philippines. But these major hubs are often included on Asian guided tours in their own regions.
1. Bangkok, Thailand
Considered one of the hubs for not only Southeast Asia but all of Asia, Bangkok is a wondrous combination of traditional Thai history, Asian culture, and modern life. Bangkok is steeped in royal Thai architecture with modern malls and business hubs and is a backpacker hub.
2. Moscow, Russia
Heading to the far northern part of Asia, Moscow stands as a reminder of Imperial Russia’s former power. With its central Red Square with the Kremlin and uniquely designed St. Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow is a time capsule of Communist and Imperial rule.
3. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Like many cities in Asia, Dubai originally was a small settlement and now has become a major business hub. Centered in the oil region of Asia, Dubai has grown to be an outpost for many of the world’s top companies, hotel chains, and high end products.
4. Udaipur, India
“India’s Venice” is one of the jewels of India’s northern region of Rajasthan with its combination of India life and European feel. While this region is known for its stunning forts and architecture, Udaipur stands out with its white buildings and canals centered around Lake Pichola.
Outdoor Travel in Asia
Asia’s landscape ranges from quite river valleys in Vietnam to the towering Himalayan Mountains in Nepal. Asia is one of the best places to get out and see Mother Nature at her finest.
For those looking for an adventurous holiday, there are many hiking and trekking tours to Asia . Nepal and Bhutan have some of the best outdoor and rigorous treks you can imagine and Japan is known for cycling as well.
Even if you aren’t going on full hiking or trekking adventures in Asia, your tour may still be considered strenuous. Many Asian countries are mountainous and some of the best sites, like the Great Wall of China, are built over the mountains and the steps are very steep. When looking into Asia tour operators double check the physical level and itinerary.
If you are looking for a more relaxed outdoor experience, you can check out Asian river cruises as they will take you into parts of Asia that are less developed and more connected with nature.
While there are some wildlife tours in Asia , much of the animals in Asia you will be able to see on normal tours. The most common animal you will see when traveling Asia, especially South and Southeast Asia, will be monkeys. Additionally, there are Asia wildlife tours to countries like Borneo that include trekking and encountering wildlife like orangutans.
Asia Cuisine
You can find any type of cuisine in Asia. With so many countries and different vegetation, Asia has a wide variety of food to choose from. This being said, Asia’s cuisine is tied to the different regions and countries. There are many similarities between some cuisines, but the produce and food is determined by the country.
In Central Asia you will find heartier dishes with meat and dairy. Much of this area has a similar cuisine to Russia with stews, stuffed breads, and Arabian flavors.
In Western Asia you’ll find a combination of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavors as many of these countries sit on the Mediterranean Sea . Tahini, falafel, lamb, and hummus are commonly found in dishes in this region. This area of Asia is also based off of meze, or small dish meals.
South Asia has a large vegetarian feel as India and Sri Lanka are mostly Hindu and Hindus do not eat meat. However, cuisines of Nepal and Afghanistan use lamb and goat. Recipes of this region use strong chillies, coriander, cloves, and ghee in their dishes. Also, many of their meals are eaten with forks and spoons, but with roti or chapati (unleaved flatbread).
Southeast Asia is where you will find many of your curries, rice dishes, and fresh fruit. This area of Asia is often associated with East Asian cuisines, but has its own distinct flavor. These cuisines use soy sauces and spices of turmeric and lemon grass.
Eastern Asia dishes are based off of oils and soups along with noodles and rice. Fish sauce, fermented vegetables, dumplings, and sushi can all be found in dishes in East Asia.
River Cruises in Asia
A great option to see Southeast Asia, but the other Asian countries as well, is by river cruise. Many of the world's most famous rivers run through Asia including the Mekong and the Yangtze.
Mekong River cruises make their way through multiple countries in Southeast Asia. The river winds itself through Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Mekong River itineraries make sure to include stops of major sites on the river like Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City, while also taking you out into the backwaters of the Mekong River.
To see some of the best sites in China, a Yangtze River cruise is ideal. A Yangtze River cruise takes you through the famous Three Gorges where three large gorges converge on the river with stops at “The White Emperor City” and “The Ghost City.”
For travelers with disabilities or who have trouble getting around, note that Asian river cruises use smaller boats and dock at ports that are not at the same standards as European river cruises.
The Ancient Silk Route
Much of Russia – from the Ural Mountains to eastern Siberia – lies in Asia, as does Mongolia, land of yurts and horsemen. Central Asia is a vast expanse of “stans”: Uzbekistan’s Samarkand, Bukhara and Tashkent were pillars along the old nomadic Silk Route from China. The ancient Babylonian and Persian empires live on in modern-day Iraq and Iran – an option for adventurous travelers. Parts of the Middle East are also troubled, though the United Arab Emirates – with its star attraction, Dubai -- and some other areas of the exotic Arabian Peninsula still beckon (even Saudi Arabia is starting to open up to non-Islamic tourism).
Israel and Jordan are at peace, offering the opportunity to visit both ancient Jerusalem and nearby Petra, Jordan’s wondrous rock city. Much of Turkey lies in Asia as well – including the unique cave dwellings of Cappadocia and the beaches of the Turkish Riviera.
While a quick overview can barely scratch the surface of Asian travel, Stride can ease the confusion with our easy-to-use comparison tools. After sizing up our plentiful offerings of guided tours, river cruises and active vacation packages, you can then decide which Asian region is the best fit for you. And chances are you’ll want to return again and again to sample more of all the cultural and adventurous discoveries that Asia has in store.
Cultural Nuances in Asia
For travelers coming from North America or Europe, some culture shock may be experiences when traveling in Asia. The culture and way of life in many Asian countries are very different than in places like the U.S. Different values and traditions are followed in Asia that may not be as important or observed in other countries.
Honor and respect are extremely important in Asian cultures. “Saving face” or respecting someone is one of the most important things in Asia. Open confrontation, criticism, or disprecting elders are highly frowned upon. However, in certain countries like China, conversations about your income and family life are fair game as these topics are valued in Chinese culture.
Even if you are from New York or London, you will still feel like you are cramped in many Asian countries. With 60% of the world’s population in Asia, many of the major cities are overcrowded and you will not have personal space when visiting. Along with this, if you accidentally get bumped getting off your bus or train, don’t expect an apology as you may get in the U.S., personal space and accidental bumpings are just part of life in Asia.

I have traveled six times by myself and with my family and friends, with Asian Pacific Adventures and will be leaving momentarily for a seventh trip. These custom trips have included the Far East, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and the Pacific from two to six weeks. The itineraries are always thorough, fascinating, sometimes off the beaten path, with a wonderful surprise or two, and lots of fun with excellent guides, outstanding transportation and well located and very pleasant accommodations with terrific restaurant recommendations.
Mrs. Hima Singh knows her stuff: she is extraordinarily knowledgeable about the destinations only uses the very best country support and arms me with all necessary documentation and tells me what to watch out for. Her ability to ascertain exactly what I’m looking for and turn it into a superbly planned trip is second to none; following up upon my return to make sure everything went as planned. She is a genuinely nice and caring person, delightful to work with and who has become a friend! Having been to 160 countries and major territories I’ve used many travel companies over the years and Asian Pacific Adventures is simply the best!

Amazing experience! This is my 2nd time travelling with Feel Free and I can confirm I had again one of the best experiences of my life! From getting the best accommodations to amazing experiences ( like snorkeling, island hopping, cooking class, Muay Thai class, sunset point views, seeing the elephants in their natural habitat, staying in the water bungalows and soooo many other), all I can say is that I will recommend travelling with FeelFree to everyone. Thanks Jamie for being such a great guide, thank you for all the coffee breaks during our travelling that made such a big difference!❤️???? Amazing Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam 18 days
Once again, we had a totally wonderful experience. The luxury of a private tour with a driver and a tour custom-designed to your own needs, abilities, and interests is an incredible way to travel. Our consultant, Toni , worked tirelessly with us to design the perfect tour. The trip was a mix of activities: historical, cultural, some outdoor and active. We saw many beautiful and exotic sights. Our guides were excellent; they both spoke fluent English and shared the history and culture of their countries with us. The hotels were wonderful, all spotlessly clean and situated on beautiful grounds. Overall, a truly wonderful experience and highly recommended.

Really beautiful and highly recommended
Philippines One Life Adventures - 10 Days
Philippines is my new favourite country. Palawan is beautiful and is accompanied by a really well run, diverse tour
Bali One Life Adventures - 12 Days
This tour was one of the best vacations I’ve ever taken. I enjoyed the structure with a variety of active things like snorkeling, surfing, hiking, and biking. There was also an adequate amount of downtime for pursuing personal interests apart from the group like shopping and visiting the spas. It was the perfect mix for me. Our guide was also great and really made the trip special. He, along with the countless locals we interacted with, really made us feel welcomed and cared for. It was evident that the one life program has established great rapport with hotel staff, drivers, and various local guides and that part of it played a large part in the overall experience. I’m very grateful for One Life and the Balaniese/Nusa Penida/Gilly Islands communities for welcoming us and making the experience unforgettable. I will certainly be recommending this to my fellow travelers and hope to sign up for another One Life trip in the future.
Bali Experience
Had such a great time! Our tour guide Josh was excellent! I got see everything I wanted to see on my list to see when visiting Bali.

Reviews of South East Asia Tours
Great experience from beginning to end.
This was my first time ever travelling without family and it was amazing! One of the best months of my life. Our CEO Tong was brilliant and full of knowledge about where we were going and what we would be doing. He made sure to have enough time for anyone and helped in anyway he could to make things run smoothly for everyone on tour including myself. If you go on this tour, make sure you ask for Tong or (Phanet Tep) as your CEO!
Realistic Asia/Glimpse of indochina was really a blast! Long Pham was amazing to deal with and was there to answer any questions I had along the way. So many great tour guides in each country and being picked up and dropped off at hotels and airports really made everything so easy! I would recommend 100% 10/10!

The Stans: Central Asian Quintet
Central Asia, our company is a namesake of, still remains terra incognita for many westerners. It consists of the five former USSR republics of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, also known as the Stans, which became independent countries only in 1991. Hidden behind the Soviet iron curtain for nearly the whole 20th century, they are now new, and so quite intriguing, tourism destinations to explore, promising enjoyable travel experiences.

The Estée Lauder Companies Reports Fiscal 2023 Third Quarter Results
Press Release , May 3, 2023
Net Sales Decreased 12% and Diluted EPS Declined 72% to $.43
Organic Net Sales 1 Decreased 8% and Adjusted Diluted EPS Fell 74% in Constant Currency
Overall Results Impacted by Slower Asia Travel Retail Recovery while Nearly All Markets Delivered Net Sales Growth Ahead of Expectations
Lowering Full-Year Outlook to Reflect More Gradual Recovery in Asia Travel Retail
Focused on Accelerating Balanced Growth Post-Pandemic
NEW YORK --(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. (NYSE: EL) today reported net sales of $3.75 billion for its third quarter ended March 31, 2023, a decline of 12% from $4.25 billion in the prior-year period, including the negative impact from foreign currency. Organic net sales fell 8%, primarily driven by Asia travel retail in Hainan and Korea . Partially offsetting the pressures affecting the Company’s Asia travel retail business, organic net sales grew in nearly every market, including the developed markets of the United States , the United Kingdom and Hong Kong , and in emerging markets globally. The Fragrance category grew double digits.
The Company reported net earnings of $156 million , compared with net earnings of $558 million in the prior-year period 2 . The Company’s reported effective tax rate was 44.6% in the quarter, compared to 18.5% in the prior-year period. The increase in rate was primarily due to the expected change in the Company’s geographical mix of earnings for fiscal 2023. Diluted net earnings per common share was $.43 , compared with $1.53 reported in the prior-year period. Excluding restructuring and other charges and adjustments as detailed on page 3, adjusted diluted net earnings per common share declined 75% to $.47 , decreasing 74% in constant currency. The reported and adjusted declines include a negative impact of 3% from certain foreign currency transactions in key international travel retail locations.
Fabrizio Freda, President and Chief Executive Officer said, “In the context of a quarter which we anticipated to be challenging, we are pleased to have delivered the high-end of our outlook for the third quarter of fiscal 2023. Our developed and emerging markets grew strongly and exceeded our expectations to offset an even slower-than-expected recovery in Asia travel retail. Each of The Americas and Asia/Pacific returned to organic sales growth, bolstered by increases in the United States and China , while the markets of EMEA continued to prosper. Moreover, we continued to grow our prestige beauty share in many markets, including a sequential acceleration in gains in China and Western Europe .
“As the shape of recovery from the pandemic for Asia travel retail comes into better focus, it is proving to be both far more volatile than we expected and more gradual relative to what we experienced in other regions. We are, therefore, lowering our organic sales and EPS outlook for fiscal 2023 to reflect significantly greater headwinds in our fourth quarter than we expected in February.”
Freda concluded, “While we work through the serious but we believe temporary headwinds facing Asia travel retail, we are encouraged by the strong momentum in the rest of our business. Indeed, consumer demand is robust for our diverse portfolio of brands in developed and emerging markets around the world, evidenced in both organic sales growth and retail sales trends, which drives our confidence in the long-term. What is more, we are thrilled to have acquired the TOM FORD brand last week and are optimistic about its promising growth opportunities.”
Business Update During the fiscal 2023 third quarter, the phase and pace of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic continued to vary across markets globally. In the West, in both developed and emerging markets, the momentum of post-COVID recovery growth continued with strong organic net sales performance in The Americas and markets in Europe , the Middle East & Africa , excluding travel retail. In Asia/Pacific , markets emerged from COVID restrictions more gradually and over a longer period of time, compared to the pace of recovery experienced in the West. These markets continued to evolve in recovery during the fiscal 2023 third quarter, evidenced by strong organic net sales growth in nearly all Asia/Pacific markets.
While the Company saw recovery in many markets globally, its Asia travel retail business continued to be pressured by the slower than anticipated recovery from the COVID pandemic. Specifically, in Hainan , while traffic into the island exceeded prior year levels, conversion of travelers to consumers in prestige beauty lagged. This led to the slower than anticipated depletion of elevated levels of retailer inventory and, therefore, lower replenishment orders. In Korea , the shipments to duty free retailers were pressured owing to the transition to post-COVID regulations as traveling consumers gradually return. In Korea , as well as in Asia more broadly, the travel retail recovery was challenged by the slower than anticipated resumption of international flights, granting of visas, and organized group tours.
In mainland China , organic net sales grew in the fiscal 2023 third quarter. While January 2023 was pressured by low retail traffic and retailer destocking from the rise in COVID cases that began in November 2022 and continued into January 2023, organic net sales returned to growth, rising double digits in February and March 2023. However, prestige beauty growth was slower than expected for the fiscal 2023 third quarter.
Finally, the Company’s business also continued to be pressured by the strong U.S dollar, historically high inflation and recession concerns.
Fiscal 2023 Third Quarter Results Reported net sales decreased 12%, including the impact of the license terminations related to certain of the Company’s designer fragrances and the negative impact from foreign currency translation.

Adjusted diluted net earnings per common share excludes restructuring and other charges and adjustments as detailed in the following table.
Net sales in the Company’s product categories and regions and operating income in most of its product categories and regions were unfavorably impacted by a stronger U.S. dollar in relation to most currencies. Reported net sales was negatively impacted by 3% of foreign currency translation, primarily reflecting a negative impact in Asia/Pacific of 7%. In addition, reported and organic net sales were negatively impacted by 1% from foreign currency transactions in key international travel retail locations, with a negative impact in Europe , the Middle East & Africa of 2%.
Total reported operating income was $297 million , a 60% decrease from $738 million in the prior-year period. In constant currency, adjusted operating income decreased 65%, primarily reflecting lower net sales and higher cost of sales, and excludes the following items:
- Fiscal 2023 third quarter: $19 million restructuring and other charges and adjustments.
- Fiscal 2022 third quarter: $216 million of other intangible asset impairments related to Dr.Jart+ and GLAMGLOW and $23 million of restructuring and other charges, partially offset by $60 million of income related to the change in fair value of acquisition-related stock options.
- The unfavorable impact of foreign currency translation of $9 million .
The product category net sales commentary below reflects organic performance, excluding the negative/(positive) impacts which are reflected in the preceding table.
- Skin Care net sales declined 17%, primarily reflecting the slower than anticipated recovery of Asia travel retail from the COVID-19 pandemic. This included lower shipments to retailers in Hainan due to lower conversion of travelers to consumers and the slower than anticipated depletion of elevated levels of retailer inventory, as well as lower shipments to Korean duty free retailers primarily due to the transition to post-COVID regulations as traveling consumers gradually return. In Korea and Asia more broadly, the travel retail recovery was challenged by the slower than anticipated resumption of international flights, granting of visas, and organized group tours. Net sales declined from La Mer, Estée Lauder and Dr.Jart+, partially offset by growth from The Ordinary and M·A·C.
- Net sales from La Mer, Estée Lauder and Dr.Jart+ declined, primarily reflecting the aforementioned challenges in Asia travel retail.
- Net sales from The Ordinary grew strong double digits compared to the prior-year period, primarily reflecting growth across every region and benefiting from continued strength from hero products, successful innovation, such as the Multi-Peptide Eye Serum, and the brand’s launch into India and the Middle East in fiscal 2023.
- M·A·C net sales more than doubled, fueled by the successful launch of the Hyper Real franchise line of products in the fiscal 2023 third quarter.
- Skin Care operating income decreased, primarily reflecting the decline in net sales from Asia travel retail, an increase in cost of sales and the unfavorable impact from the change in fair value of acquisition-related stock options compared to the prior year, partially offset by the prior year other intangible asset impairments of $216 million relating to Dr.Jart+ and GLAMGLOW. The increase in cost of sales included the unfavorable impacts from obsolescence charges and promotional items.
- Makeup net sales were virtually flat to the prior-year period, reflecting growth in most markets as they continued to evolve in recovery and as usage occasions increased, offset by the challenges and the slower than anticipated recovery of Asia travel retail from the COVID-19 pandemic. Net sales declined from Estée Lauder, partially offset by growth from M·A·C, Clinique and TOM FORD Beauty.
- Net sales from Estée Lauder were negatively impacted by the aforementioned challenges in Asia travel retail.
- M·A·C net sales growth reflected continued success from hero products and recent launches, particularly in the face and lip subcategories. The increase in net sales also reflected the benefit from changes to the brand’s take back loyalty program made in the fiscal 2023 second quarter.
- Net sales from Clinique rose double digits, benefiting from solid performance in the lip, concealer and eye subcategories.
- Double-digit net sales growth from TOM FORD Beauty reflected strength from products in the lip subcategory, including Lip Color Satin Matte and Soleil Lip Blush.
- Makeup operating income decreased, primarily reflecting an increase in cost of sales, including obsolescence charges, and the decrease in net sales from Asia travel retail.
- Fragrance net sales grew double digits, reflecting strong growth in every region and double-digit growth from TOM FORD Beauty, Le Labo and Estée Lauder.
- Net sales from TOM FORD Beauty rose double digits, reflecting growth in hero franchises like Ebene Fume and Ombre Leather and successful innovation, such as TOM FORD Noir Extreme Parfum and the fiscal 2023 third quarter launch of The Private Blend Cherry Collection.
- Strong double-digit growth from Le Labo was fueled by growth in every region and virtually all channels of distribution, primarily due to the continued consumer demand for the brand’s hero product franchises, such as Santal 33 and Another 13, and high-touch services, as well as targeted expanded consumer reach.
- Estée Lauder net sales grew double digits, driven by the success from existing product franchises, such as Beautiful and Estée Lauder Pleasures.
- Fragrance operating income decreased, driven primarily by an increase in cost of sales, including the change in brand mix.
- Hair Care net sales increased 3%, reflecting growth from The Ordinary’s hair care products, partially offset by a decline from Aveda.
- Aveda net sales declined, driven by softness in North America , partially offset by the launch of the brand in mainland China and growth in Europe , the Middle East & Africa .
- Hair Care operating results decreased, reflecting an increase in cost of sales, including obsolescence charges.
The geographic region net sales commentary below reflects organic performance, excluding the negative impacts which are reflected in the preceding table.
The Americas
- Net sales rose 6%, returning to growth and benefiting from increases in Makeup, Skin Care and Fragrance.
- Net sales in North America grew mid-single-digits, driven by the United States , reflecting growth in Skin Care, Makeup and Fragrance owing to double-digit growth from The Ordinary, M·A·C and Le Labo.
- In Latin America , net sales rose strong double digits, fueled by growth in every country as well as in all major categories, led by the Makeup and Fragrance categories.
- Operating income in The Americas decreased, primarily reflecting $338 million of lower intercompany royalty income due to the decline in income from the Company’s travel retail business. The decrease also reflects higher cost of sales, including obsolescence charges and changes in the mix of business.
Europe , the Middle East & Africa
- Net sales declined 24%, due to the slower than anticipated recovery of Asia travel retail from the COVID-19 pandemic, partially offset by growth in virtually all markets, led by the United Kingdom and Germany .
- Global travel retail net sales decreased double digits, reflecting the aforementioned challenges that led to lower product shipments primarily to retailers in Hainan and Korea . Travel retail net sales grew strong double digits in Europe , the Middle East & Africa and The Americas , benefiting from the increase in domestic and international travel compared to the prior-year period.
- Net sales rose double digits in the United Kingdom , fueled by strong growth in Skin Care, led by The Ordinary, Estée Lauder and Clinique, as well as the progression of recovery in Makeup as usage occasions returned. Double-digit net sales growth in Germany reflected double-digit growth in each major product category, powered by Estée Lauder, M·A·C, Clinique and TOM FORD Beauty owing to strong demand for hero products and successful innovation.
- Net sales rose in nearly all emerging markets in the region 3 .
- Operating income decreased, driven by the decline in net sales, partially offset by $338 million of lower intercompany royalty expense due to the decline in income from the Company’s travel retail business.
Asia/Pacific
- Net sales grew 7%, driven by the ongoing recovery from eased COVID-related restrictions compared to the prior-year period, led by Hong Kong , Australia , Japan and mainland China . This was somewhat offset by the slower than anticipated recovery of Dr.Jart+ travel retail in Korea from the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Net sales in Hong Kong doubled, benefiting from the reopening of borders, the resumption of travel and the return of brick-and-mortar traffic.
- Net sales in Australia rose strong double digits, reflecting the return of brick-and-mortar traffic and benefiting from double-digit growth in each of the major product categories.
- Double-digit net sales growth in Japan reflected the ongoing recovery from eased COVID-related restrictions compared to the prior-year period.
- Net sales in mainland China returned to growth, reflecting double-digit increases in February and March 2023, partially offset by the decline in January 2023 due to the impact from the increase in the number of COVID cases, including slower brick-and-mortar traffic.
- Nearly all emerging markets in Asia/Pacific 4 grew double digits.
- Operating income increased, driven by the prior-year period other intangible asset impairment of $205 million related to Dr.Jart+, partially offset by an increase in cost of sales, including promotional items, and the decrease in net sales.
Nine-Months Results
- For the nine months ended March 31, 2023, the Company reported net sales of $12.30 billion , a 13% decrease compared with $14.18 billion in the prior-year period. Organic net sales decreased 8%.
- Net earnings 5 were $1.04 billion , and diluted earnings per share was $2.88 . In the prior year nine months, the Company reported net earnings of $2.34 billion and diluted earnings per share of $6.39 .
- During the nine months ended March 31, 2023, the Company recorded restructuring and other charges, other intangible asset impairments, and change in fair value of acquisition-related stock options, that, combined, resulted in an unfavorable impact of $238 million ( $182 million less the portion attributable to redeemable noncontrolling interest and net of tax), equal to $.50 per diluted share, as detailed on page 15. The prior-year period results include restructuring and other charges, other intangible asset impairments, change in fair value of acquisition-related stock options, and other income related to a gain on a previously held equity investment in Deciem Beauty Group Inc. that, combined, resulted in an unfavorable impact of $201 million ( $151 million less the portion attributable to redeemable noncontrolling interest and net of tax), equal to $.41 per diluted share.
- Excluding restructuring and other charges and adjustments referred to in the previous bullet, adjusted diluted net earnings per common share for the nine months ended March 31, 2023 was $3.38 , and declined 47% in constant currency. For the nine months ended March 31, 2023, diluted earnings per common share included the unfavorable impacts of foreign currency translation and foreign currency transactions in key international travel retail locations of $.23 and $.26 , respectively.
- For the nine months ended March 31, 2023, net cash flows provided by operating activities were $1.02 billion , compared with $1.97 billion in the prior-year period. This reflects lower earnings before taxes, excluding non-cash items, partially offset by lower working capital.
- Capital Expenditures were $652 million , virtually flat to the prior year.
- The Company ended the quarter with $5.53 billion in cash and cash equivalents after returning $0.95 billion cash to stockholders through dividends and share repurchases. This includes $2.23 billion from the issuance of commercial paper, most of which was issued at various times throughout the quarter.
- On April 28, 2023, the Company completed the acquisition of the TOM FORD brand. The amount paid by the Company at closing, approximately $2.25 billion , was funded by cash on hand and proceeds from the issuance of commercial paper, and approximately $250 million received from Marcolin S.p.A. (a continuing TOM FORD licensee). An additional aggregate amount of $300 million in deferred payments, at 5% interest per annum, to the sellers becomes due from the Company beginning in July 2025.
Outlook The Company expects organic net sales to return to growth in the fourth quarter, reflecting continued momentum of post-COVID recovery growth in nearly all markets globally. The impacts from the ongoing pressures in Asia travel retail, driven primarily by risks associated with the volatile and slower than originally anticipated pace of recovery, are expected to partially offset the growth in other markets.
The Company remains focused on accelerating balanced growth post-pandemic and optimistic about the prospects and future growth in global prestige beauty. Notwithstanding this difficult environment, the Company plans to continue to invest in its business to support recovery, share gains and long-term growth, including strategic investments in advertising, innovation, support of the retail acceleration of its travel retail business, the growth of its emerging markets, targeted expanded consumer reach and in its new manufacturing facility in Japan .
The full year outlook reflects the following assumptions and expectations:
- The progress towards the rebalancing of inventory levels in Hainan , given the disruptions from the COVID-related impacts throughout fiscal 2023 and the tightening of inventory by retailers.
- The temporary pressure to the Company’s travel retail business in Korea due to retailers transitioning to post-COVID regulations as traveling consumers gradually return.
- A slower pace of resumption of Asia travel retail net sales than previously anticipated given the more gradual return of international flights, granting of visas, availability of organized group tours, and consumer conversion in the beauty category. We now expect the return of traffic and conversion to build gradually over the fiscal 2023 fourth quarter and the first half of fiscal 2024.
- Balanced growth in the fourth quarter across nearly all other markets globally and accelerated consumer demand in mainland China .
- Strategic price increases, increased productive distribution to retailers that provide new consumer reach and continued strategic entry into new countries for some of the Company’s brands.
- Incremental savings from the Post-COVID Business Acceleration Program and reinvestment in advertising and capabilities.
- An increase in the full year effective tax rate to approximately 27%, reflecting the expected change in the geographical mix of earnings, notably due to the Company’s travel retail business as previously discussed, for the remainder of the year.
- The acquisition of the TOM FORD brand is expected to be approximately $.03 to $.04 dilutive to full year diluted earnings per common share.
The Company is mindful of risks related to the effects of the global macro environment, including the risk of recession; geopolitical tensions; foreign currency volatility; inflationary pressures; supply chain disruptions; social and political issues; residual impacts related to the COVID-19 pandemic; regulatory matters, including the imposition of tariffs and sanctions; and global security issues. The Company is also mindful of inflationary pressures on its cost base and consumer behaviors.
Full Year Fiscal 2023
Sales Outlook
- The slower than expected return to growth in Asia travel retail, as detailed above.
- Currency exchange rates are volatile and difficult to predict. Using March 31, 2023 spot rates for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023, a 4% headwind due to foreign currency translation, as well as an additional 1% due to certain foreign currency transactions in key international travel retail locations.
- The negative impact of 1% from the termination of the Company’s license agreements for the Donna Karan New York, DKNY, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger and Ermenegildo Zegna product lines effective June 30, 2022.
- Organic net sales, which excludes returns associated with restructuring and other activities; non-comparable impacts from acquisitions, divestitures and brand closures; as well as the impact of foreign currency translation, are forecasted to decrease between 7% to 5%. This includes the impact related to foreign currency transactions, noted above.
Earnings per Share Outlook
- Reported diluted net earnings per common share are projected to be between $2.62 and $2.76 . Excluding restructuring and other charges and adjustments, diluted net earnings per common share are projected to be between $3.29 and $3.39 .
- The foreign currency translation impact equates to about $.26 of dilution to earnings per share.
- As reported and adjusted diluted earnings per share in constant currency are expected to be dilutive by 4% from certain foreign currency transactions in key international travel retail locations.

This earnings release includes some non-GAAP financial measures relating to charges associated with restructuring and other activities and adjustments, as well as organic net sales. Included herein are reconciliations between the non-GAAP financial measures and the most directly comparable GAAP measures for certain consolidated statements of earnings accounts before and after these items. The Company uses certain non-GAAP financial measures, among other financial measures, to evaluate its operating performance, which represent the manner in which the Company conducts and views its business. Management believes that excluding certain items that are not comparable from period-to-period, or do not reflect the Company’s underlying ongoing business, provides transparency for such items and helps investors and others compare and analyze operating performance from period-to-period. In the future, the Company expects to incur charges or adjustments similar in nature to those presented herein; however, the impact to the Company’s results in a given period may be highly variable and difficult to predict. The Company’s non-GAAP financial measures may not be comparable to similarly titled measures used by, or determined in a manner consistent with, other companies. While the Company considers the non-GAAP measures useful in analyzing its results, they are not intended to replace, or act as a substitute for, any presentation included in the consolidated financial statements prepared in conformity with GAAP.
The Company operates on a global basis, with the majority of its net sales generated outside the United States . Accordingly, fluctuations in foreign currency exchange rates can affect the Company’s results of operations. Therefore, the Company presents certain net sales, operating results and diluted net earnings per share information excluding the effect of foreign currency rate fluctuations to provide a framework for assessing the performance of its underlying business outside the United States . Constant currency information compares results between periods as if exchange rates had remained constant period-over-period. The Company calculates constant currency information by translating current-period results using prior-year period monthly average foreign currency exchange rates and adjusting for the period-over-period impact of foreign currency cash flow hedging activities.

Japan National Tourism Organization Named Overall Winner At Routes Asia 2024 Awards
Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has been crowned the Overall Winner at the Routes Asia 2024 Awards, as well as triumphing in the Destination category.
The tourism body was one of five winners at the event, which celebrated excellence in airport and destination marketing. The other victors at the ceremony, held at Routes Asia 2024 in Langkawi, Malaysia, were Clark International Airport, Perth Airport, Melbourne Airport and Cebu Pacific.
JNTO’s market development strategy encompasses initiatives to promote visitors to regional areas. Collaborating with airlines and travel agencies, including online platforms, it runs campaigns with a focus on key targets like Taiwan, Hong Kong and Thailand, identified for their high interest in regional exploration and repeat visits.
In the Under 5 Million Passengers category, Clark International Airport in the Philippines was named the winner. The airport experienced significant growth in 2023, handling nearly 2 million passengers, marking a 160% increase from the previous 12 months. During that time, it welcomed five new airlines, including four international carriers, and added 13 new destinations.
In the 5-20 Million Passengers category, Perth Airport in Australia triumphed, retaining the title it was awarded in 2023. Perth’s recovery from the pandemic has been robust, with passenger numbers totaling a record 15.3 million during 2023, helped by new routes launched by Batik Air Malaysia, Philippine Airlines, VietJet and Vietnam Airlines.
Fellow Australian gateway Melbourne Airport won the Over 20 Million Passengers category. With a record-breaking 38 international airlines serving the airport, up from 36 in 2019, it welcomed six new airlines last year and worked with 31 others to resume services to more than 26 destinations. Notable new routes have included Qantas’ service to Dallas-Fort Worth—the fourth-longest in the world—and Turkish Airlines’ choosing Melbourne as its first Australian destination.
Finally, Cebu Pacific won the Airline category. The Philippine LCC, which plans to double its fleet by 2035, ensures the success of new services through collaborative strategies. Continuous engagement with airports led to the restart of its Clark hub in April 2023, enabling the resumption and launch of 15 domestic and international destinations.
Finalists from the Airport and Destination categories were reviewed and scored by a panel of airline judges, while the Airline category was reviewed and scored by a panel of editorial judges.
