Ord river canoe trip: a guide to 3 days of paddling in the kimberley.

Amy Fairall

As the Editor, if you read WAE, you've more than likely read something Amy's written. Amy lives on Larrakia land in the NT and is frequently on the hunt for new bodies of freshwater to dunk herself into. She has a preference for adventures slightly off the beaten track, with a penchant for multi-day hikes and a new found love of paddling.

Learn about We Are Explorers' Editorial Standards

After three days on the Ord River, the East Kimberley has captured Amy’s heart. Paddling 55km downstream through one of the most remote regions in the country, with seven mates in tow (not quite literally), isn’t something she’ll forget any time soon.

We acknowledge that this adventure is located on the traditional Country of the Miriwoong and Gajerrong peoples who have occupied and cared for the lands, waters, and their inhabitants for thousands of years. We pay our respects to them as the Traditional Custodians and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded.

Jump to Section

Quick overview.

This 55km, three day canoe trip down the Ord River winds from Lake Argyle to Kununurra in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. It’s a rare Saltwater croc-free section of river in Northern Australia that offers up endless views and good times.

About the Ord River Canoe Trip

The Ord River in Western Australia’s Kimberley region is a 651km long river that winds its way from the Kimberley Plateau to the Cambridge Gulf. However, a 55km section of it, between the man-made Lake Argyle and the dam wall in Kununurra, is regularly monitored for Saltwater crocodiles, making it safe enough for a paddling adventure! (Although it’s still teeming with Freshwater crocodiles, so don’t become too complacent.)

Read more: How To Stay Safe in Croc Country

kununurra canoe trip

To paddle the entire 55km length takes three days, with stopovers at two riverside campgrounds along the way, as well as waterfalls and creeks to explore. The best way to organise the trip is to make a booking with Go Wild Adventures who’ll supply you with the canoes and almost all the gear you need for the trip.

The team also offers single or two day canoe options, but it’s definitely worth going the whole hog!

This is a completely unique way to immerse yourself in the Kimberley region, and Northern Australia in general, as it’s rare to get such a long stretch of river safe for paddling!

Ord River History

Known as Goonoonoorrang to the local Miriwoong people, the Ord River winds through the traditional country of the Miriwoong and Gajerrong peoples, who have lived in the area for thousands of years.

The western name was given to the river to commemorate Sir Harry St. George Ord, who was the Governor of Western Australia for 1877 to 1880 (yeah just three years, go figure).

The damming of the Ord River in 1972 as part of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme, created Lake Arygle, the largest man-made lake in all of Australia at 741 square kilometres in size.

How to Get to the Ord River

The Ord River canoe trip starts from the north side of the dam wall at Lake Argyle, about an hour’s drive from Kununurra. If you book through Go Wild Adventures, they’ll pick you up from Kununurra to drive you to the start of the river and meet you at your preferred pick up point once you’re back in Kununurra.

Kununurra is an 8.5 hour drive from Darwin along the Stuart and Victoria Highways. If you’re coming from further afield, you can fly into Kununurra Airport.

Kununurra is also the eastern end of the Gibb River Road, so if you’re road-tripping along, this is a great adventure to tack onto your trip.

Where to Stay Along the Ord River

There are two campgrounds for use of paddlers on the Go Wild Adventures trip.

Both Cooliman Camp on the first night and Stonewall Camp on the second are well equipped, with five tent platforms available, as well as a shower, toilet, and camp kitchen at each.

When we took the trip, a few of the platforms at Stonewall Camp were a bit overgrown, but we were on the second trip after the wet season, so things had really sprung up!

In terms of accommodation on either side of the canoe trip, Kimberleyland Waterfront Holiday Park in Kununurra is a beautiful waterside caravan park with great facilities including a pool, cafe, and camp kitchen.

At the other end of the river, Lake Argyle Resort is known for its spectacular views over the lake, including the Insta-famous infinity pool. Cabins and camping spot for caravans and tents are available, and there’s a cafe/restaurant on site.

Skill Level

Beginner – Intermediate

I believe anyone with even a small amount of previous paddling experience would be able to handle this trip. It’s more about endurance than technical skill.

As the water level is constantly controlled by the pump at Lake Argyle dam wall, the river is rarely at risk of rising dramatically. Within the first few hours, there are a handful of minor obstacles, but after that, the river widens and becomes quite slow-moving.

If anything, the paddling becomes hard work, especially if a headwind picks up. Two of the days are quite long (23km each) and on flat water, so can become a little bit of a drag. But the scenery more than helps!

What it’s Like to Paddle the Ord River

Day 1 – lake argyle dam wall to cooliman camp.

Distance: 23km Duration: 5.5 hours

The first day of the paddle starts with an early wake up in Kununurra, where the crew from Go Wild Adventures will pick you up, help you pack your barrels, pick up any last supplies, drive you to the start of the river and give you a detailed briefing.

This all took a fair while longer than I expected, so we didn’t start paddling until around 11:30am, and the sun was scorching!

The first few hours of the paddle are certainly the most fun of the whole trip, as the water is moving fast and there are a few trees and islands to maneuver.

kununurra canoe trip

With turtles sticking their heads up to say hi, and Freshwater crocs basking on the reedy riverbank, there was plenty of wildlife to spot as we stroked our way between the rough, red ranges.

After around 2.5 hours of paddling, we rounded a corner and found a sandy bank to pull up on for a lunch of wraps (classic) and a splash in the shallows.

kununurra canoe trip

We set off again around 2:30pm and we started to find nooks of shade behind the ranges as we paddled our way to camp. The last half hour or so was the best of the day, as we made our way between the hugging walls of a gorge and finally evaded the sun.

kununurra canoe trip

We arrived at Cooliman Camp to much delight at around 5pm, with just enough time to set up our tents before sundown.

We lit a fire (mostly to keep bugs away) and tucked into a scrumptious Italian dinner and red wine before hitting the pillow. It was a sweltering night, even without the flies on our tents.

kununurra canoe trip

Day 2 – Cooliman Camp to Stonewall Camp

Distance: 9km (plus side trips) Duration: 4.5 hours

The sun rises early in the far east of WA, with first light around 5:30am. I watched the pink light make its way across the still river from my tent with a cacophony of birds as a backing track.

As this day was by far the shortest amount of paddling we had to do, we enjoyed a slower morning, making multiple rounds of coffee, tucking into muesli, and planning the day ahead.

kununurra canoe trip

Pushing out onto the river by about 10am, we travelled less than 100 metres before diverting down a small and jungely creek in search of a waterfall, with much success!

After an hour or so of rock scrambling and stripping off to swim in cascading falls, we settled back into our canoes for a longer journey up the river in search of the next waterfall – Herbies Hideaway.

After an hour or so of paddling, we spotted the entry point to the track, docked our canoes, and made haste along the 1-2km jungle trail, with little idea of exactly what to expect. Herbie certainly delivered!

kununurra canoe trip

This magnificent tumbling waterfall provided a beautiful big swimming hole to delight in with (limited) fear of Freshies. Definitely worth the trek in!

We trod our way back to the canoes and continued the final 6km paddle to Stonewall Camp, passing by a magical waterfall in a cave as we went.

Unlike the first day, this day we started to see other boats on the river enjoying the water and scenery too, but all of them had cleared out by late afternoon, when we paddled back to a nearby lookout for sunset and had the landscape to ourselves.

kununurra canoe trip

Day 3 – Stonewall Camp to Kununurra Diversion Dam

Distance: 23km Duration: 6 hours

The final day of our paddle was just as long as our first, but with much more tired and sore bodies. Luckily, it was overcast so the beating sun wasn’t an issue, the headwind however, certainly didn’t help morale.

Breaking camp and paddling out at around 8:30am, we had a tiny kick of a current from the adjoining spillway, but it was short-lived as the river got niiiice and wide.

kununurra canoe trip

The first few kilometres saw us wave goodbye to the ranges that had flanked us for the last two days, as we moved closer to town and into more low-lying agricultural territory.

Signs of civilisation started popping up on the banks, and about halfway along, we pulled up for lunch at a public jetty and boat ramp. If you’ve well and truly had enough by this point, you can give the crew from Go Wild Adventures a call to come pick you up early for a small fee.

Our egos however were too large, so we jumped back in the canoes for the last 10km or so.

With food in our bellies and show tunes on our lips, the last few hours were a delight. We watched sheets of rain travel along the river before showering down on us, we admired Elephant Rock erupt from the surrounding plains, and we remembered we had the esky with the beers, so cracked a celebratory Black Fish for the final kilometre.

Cheers to an unforgettable adventure!

Tips for Paddling the Ord River

  • Prepare for it to be very humid and very sunny! You’ll be exposed during the entire paddle, so even if it’s hot, long sleeved pants and shirts are best for keeping the sun off
  • Freshwater crocodiles will be present, and I’d be surprised if you don’t see at least one. It’s good to be cautious and obviously never approach them, but don’t let them stop you from getting in the water! They’re not aggressive like Salties and will usually swim away when they feel you coming

Ultimate guide to Kununurra

Travel & Touring  | WA Destinations

By: Tatum Stafford

If paddling along tranquil lakes, swimming in gorges below waterfalls and hiking through rugged national parks is your type of holiday, it’s time for a trip to Kununurra.

Located in Australia’s far North West , this beautiful township sits on the banks of the famous Ord River, and is filled with epic fishing, paddling, boating, hiking and swimming opportunities. Set your GPS, we’re heading to Kununurra.

Top things to see and do

Cruise, fish, canoe or swim in Lake Kununurra

The expansive Lake Kununurra is a freshwater, man-made reservoir that was formed in 1963. As part of the Upper Ord River, the lake stretched for 56 kilometres and passes through some of the region’s most scenic landscapes, including the magnificent Carlton Gorge and plenty of cliffs, rock overhangs and waterfalls. A cruise along its waters is the best way to view these incredible natural features – you'll need to book this online before your visit.

Another popular pastime on the lake is fishing – though it’s important to note that all fish caught in the lake are ‘catch and release’ only. The lake is a hotspot for barramundi, especially after the WA Government released more than 850,000 of the species into the lake as part of a restocking program over the past few years. The Lilly Creek Lagoon is a popular fishing location. The lagoon is two-wheel drive accessible and a hotspot for silver cobbler or brim. If you have a boat, venturing further into Lake Kununurra will see plenty of fish on your line – just be cautious that where there are barramundi, there are usually saltwater crocodiles. If you spot one, don’t lean over the edge of your boat and leave the area immediately.

If you’d rather hit the water, canoe hire is available in the town centre, or the closest swimming beach on the lake is aptly called Swim Beach. This is a ‘crocodile-controlled zone’, and there are other swimming guidelines displayed on signs near the beach car park.

Explore local Aboriginal art galleries

The Warmun Art Centre, established in 1998, is owned and run by Gija people, with all profits returning to the local community. The centre supports the continued development of contemporary art by both established and emerging local artists, and facilitates artworks that go on to be showcased internationally and locally, in galleries including the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris. During your visit, you’ll be able to peruse the diverse artworks of the local creators, and also attend notable exhibitions and open studio events. Please note that due to COVID-19, the Warmun Art Centre is currently closed.

Another notable local art gallery is Waringarri Aboriginal Arts. Established to celebrate the uniqueness of Miriwoong cultural identity, the gallery opened in the late 1970’s and was the first wholly Indigenous-owned art centre in the Kimberley region. The centre houses artist studios and a range of galleries; supporting more than 100 painters, boab engravers, textile artists, sculptors and more. Visitors to the centre are invited to experience the richness of Miriwoong culture on a series of tours, ranging from sunset bush tucker walks to a four-wheel drive ‘On Country’ culture exploring famous Kimberley landscapes. Once your tour concludes, you’ll be free to wander the centre’s fantastic galleries and connect with some of the region’s most prolific Indigenous artists.

Hike in Mirima National Park

Often dubbed a ‘mini Bungle Bungle range’, the incredible Mirima National Park is filled with fascinating rock formations, a diverse range of plant and animal species, and some of Kununurra’s best walking trails. One of the most popular trails is the 2-kilometre Gerliwany-gerring Banan Trail, which weaves through some of the park’s lush Savannah woodlands along the floor of Hidden Valley.

This trail is a great option for observing wildlife, particularly in the late afternoon when you’re likely to spot rock wallabies and wallaroos feeding on grass. You may also spot birds such as finches and fairy-wrens around areas of low vegetation. There are a few short, steep hill sections along the trail, so some bushwalking experience is recommended.

Climb to the Kelly's Knob Lookout

This epic lookout is the highest point in Kununurra. Boasting 360-degree views of the town, the Ord River, Elephant Rock and Lake Kununurra, the lookout is located a few kilometres out of town and can be reached on a 1.2-kilometre walk from the car park area. The walk can be challenging at times, so enclosed footwear and a bit of hiking experience is recommended. The best time to visit is at sunset or sunrise, and it’s also a popular picnic spot for locals and tourists alike.

Visit the Kangaroo Haven Wildlife Rescue Centre

This family-owned wildlife sanctuary was established in 2011, and has successfully released more than 650 joeys back into the wild during its nine years of operation. Working closely with the WA Department of Parks and Wildlife, the rescue team look after not only kangaroos, but also emus and birds on their 10-acre property a 20-minute drive out of Kununurra.

The centre runs tours of their enclosures daily (you’ll need to book online at least 24 hours before arriving), where you’ll be able to bottle feed and cuddle young joeys, meet emus and larger kangaroos, and learn about daily life at the sanctuary. During your visit, have a look at the kangaroo board where you can opt to sponsor a joey for a minimum of $5 per month.

Take a dip in local springs, gorges and waterfalls

The vast Kimberley region is one of WA’s most recognisable locations for waterfalls and gorges – and luckily for visitors to Kununurra, many of these water wonderlands are a few hours (or a day trip) away from town. At 10 kilometres away, the closest waterfall to Kununurra is Black Rock Falls; a popular swimming spot following wet season rains that features a 30-metre rock cliff and tranquil pool area. Access to these falls is by four-wheel drive only, and the road to it may be closed following heavy rains.

If you’d rather travel a little further afield, the Molly Springs pool and waterfall within the Ngamoowalem Conservation Park is accessible all year-round and features a peaceful shady area perfect for picnicking. The pool is only a few metres long, so arrive early to ensure you have enough space both on the banks and in the water.

Walk through the Celebrity Tree Park

Located within Kununurra town, this tranquil shaded area earns its ‘celebrity’ status from the varity of notable figures who have planted trees here, including HRH Princess Anne, Harry Butler and Baz Luhrmann. The park overlooks the Lily Creek Lagoon, and is a lovely spot for a picnic or a leisurely stroll.

Cruise the Ord River

The picturesque, 650-kilometre long Ord River is one of the State’s most significant waterways. It flows around the edge of the Purnululu National Park, through Lake Argyle and along the Kununurra township before draining into Wyndham’s Cambridge Gulf. Some of the most popular pastimes along the river are boating, canoeing, water sports and birdwatching – and similar to Lake Kununurra, it’s also a barramundi fishing hotspot. Boating, fishing and canoeing tours of the river can all be booked online or in the Kununurra township.

Marvel at Elephant Rock

Officially known as Carlton Ridge, the mighty Elephant Rock or ‘Sleeping Buddha’ is a massive rock formation situated on the banks of the Ord River. To view the rock, visit the Celebrity Tree Park in the Kununurra township, or hop on a cruise along the Ord towards Lake Argyle – looking at it from this end, you may spot the ‘elephant head’ shape that the rock got its name from.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ben Broady (@ben_broady) on Apr 18, 2019 at 2:02am PDT

Visit the Kununurra Museum

Run by volunteers of the Kununurra Historical Society, the Kununurra Museum was established in 1986 and features the fascinating documentation of the region’s recorded fossils, the Ord Irrigation Project and objects that are 1,800 million years old. The museum is open weekdays, from 12:30 to 5:30pm.

Stay on a traditional homestead or at a station stay

If you’re looking for a unique travel experience within the vast North West outback, book a stay on a working property or homestead in or around Kununurra. Sprawling across over 248,000 hectares, the Home Valley Station is a popular spot. Located an hour and 40 minutes’ drive from Kununurra, the station runs several regional tours encompassing local waterfalls, billabongs and gorges, and offers unique luxury accommodation along the banks of the peaceful Bindoola Creek.

Located next to Home Valley Station is El Questro Station, an iconic pastoral station located within the El Questro Wilderness Park. Famed for its cascading waterfalls, horse-riding trails and plentiful gorges, visitors to the park will be spoilt for choice between cruising gorges, soaking in thermal pools or helping the station owners tend to their cattle. There are plenty of accommodation options on the station, ranging from raised eco tents and campsites to cliff-side villas and bungalows.

In 2021, the stations will be open from April to October.

Getting around

The most reliable way to travel in and around the Kimberley is in a four-wheel drive. Some sites are two-wheel drive accessible, but having a four-wheel drive will ensure you can visit all of the attractions you’d like to. A lot of roads in Kununurra are sealed, but you may encounter a few unsealed gravelly roads – so be sure to slow down and drive with extra caution.

What to pack

Most days in Kununurra are humid, so make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen and a hat, and wear loose, short clothing so you can stay cool. Fly nets and insect repellent are also a good idea – and if visiting during wet season, an umbrella or rain poncho is a must. In cooler months, bring a few extra layers so you can stay warm, especially at night when temperatures can drop quite dramatically.

Travelling safely

It’s important you feel comfortable driving on dirt tracks before attempting roads in and around Kununurra. Some roads may be closed due to rough weather, so plan ahead in case of detours. You’ll also want to bring a map, as phone reception may be spotty in remote areas. Encountering wildlife is a risk at dawn or dusk, so drive carefully during these times. Frequently Asked Questions

The Upper Ord River and Lake Kununurra is the only river in Northern Australia that is protected from Saltwater crocs. The Department of Parks and Wildlife has the responsibility to keep the area between the Ord and Diversion dams free from salties.  They have six traps which are monitored weekly on the river. Salties have been known to enter the area during the wet season, which are then trapped and relocated downstream.  You'll see heaps of Freshwater (Johnson) crocs. There are about 7000 in the Upper Ord, or one for every 20 metres.

We'll stop so you can get ice at the Roadhouse in the morning.

Drinking Water

You'll be floating in it!  You can drink the water straight from the Ord.

Lake Argyle is big enough to dilute just about anything.  Pollution in this respect usually comes from domestic animals, like cattle, but in the Kimberley the country cannot sustain more than about 15 beasts per hectare, which is not enough to pollute our waterway.

The water on tap at Cooliman Camp is siphoned from a freshwater spring, which tastes even better, and the water at Stonewall Camp is pumped up from the Ord.

The first day is 23kms, the first half of which has the fastest flow to help you along.  This takes 4-5 hours to paddle on average.

The second day is only 9kms, or 2-3 hours paddling, to give you the chance to have a good look around in that fantastic area that you can only access from the river.

The last day is another 23kms. It is the longest day, the one to get home, with less flow but usually the dry season wind will help to push you home.

Our new 4 day trip cuts the last day in half, with only 11km to paddle to Maxwell Camp, which takes about 2 hours, then the last day is only 10km to Kununurra, or 12km to the Diversion Dam wall
