About the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard

If you want to save big on your next flight, then take a look at the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard .  For starters, the welcome offer is worth up to 700¹ in WestJet dollars. The card’s standard earn rate is another way to help you save. Earn 2% back in WestJet dollars on WestJet flights or WestJet Vacations packages using your card⁸. Earn 1.5% back in WestJet dollars for everyday purchases you make on your card⁸. Given that 1 WJ dollar equals $1 CAD, your rewards can go a long way. Redeeming West Jet dollars is also easy, as you don’t need to worry about redemption charts, blackout dates, or seat availability.

Even though the card has an annual fee of $119, you get some pretty good annual benefits. It includes a free first checked bag for the primary cardholder on WestJet flights and up to eight additional guests on the same reservation⁴ (valid for primary cardholders of the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard and up to eight (8) additional guests travelling on the same reservation. Additional terms and conditions apply). You also get an annual companion voucher³, which can save you a fair amount if you’re travelling with another person.

As for the potential rewards you can earn, let’s say you spend $2,000 on flights with WestJet and a total of $18,000 on all other purchases every year. This would earn you 310 in WestJet dollars. When you add in the welcome bonus worth up to 700¹ in WestJet dollars, you’ll get 1,010 WestJet dollars in the first year.

And there’s more: Remember those free checked bags? The cost of a checked bag starts at $30 each way. Let’s say you’re taking four flights a year. That’s eight segments total. In other words, with the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, you’d save $240 on checked bag fees. When you add everything up, you’re getting  a total of over $1,000 in value in the first year.

My Experience with RBC WestJet World Elite Mastercard Insurance

To earn as many WestJet Dollars as possible, I use my WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard to pay for nearly everything I buy. So when the 55" Samsung Frame TV I bought with this card needed its panel replaced after only 18 months of ownership (and just 6 months outside the protection of the manufacturer's warranty), I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I had an extended warranty for up to two years with the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard. To use this feature, I paid for the repair myself, filed the claim online with the card's insurance carrier and I was reimbursed with a cheque for the full amount within weeks. Now I run every major purchase I can through this card—not only to earn the 1.5% back in WestJet dollars—but also to gain the protection of an extended warranty, without paying extra for one.

How the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard compares

While there’s no doubt that the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is a great credit card, you should consider the competition before you sign up. The most logical comparison would be the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card. Aeroplan is the loyalty program of Air Canada, so you can quickly compare the earn rate and benefits.

TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card

TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card

Best Offer yet for the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card: Earn up to $1,200 in value† including up to 50,000 Aeroplan points†. Conditions Apply. Account must be approved by June 3, 2024.

The TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card has a slightly higher annual fee of $139. Earn 1.5 points† for every $1 spent on eligible gas, grocery and direct through Air Canada ® purchases (including Air Canada Vacations ® ) made with your card. Earn 1 Aeroplan point † for every $1 spent on all other purchases made with your card. Redeeming points is arguably easier with Air Canada since they have more flights and airline partners. However, Aeroplan also uses dynamic pricing, which means during peak seasons, the cost for a free flight could cost you more points.

With both cards, you get free checked bags † . While the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard gives you an annual round-trip companion voucher, the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card has the advantage in the travel insurance department since it includes trip cancellation† and delayed/lost baggage insurance † .

While the earn rate and benefits are important, you could argue your travel preferences are more important. If you like to fly WestJet, get the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard. If flexibility is more important, then the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card might be the better pick. But there are plenty of other  travel rewards credit cards  to consider too.

† Terms and conditions apply.

The offer for the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card is not available for residents of Quebec. For Quebec residents, please  click here.

The bottom line: WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard review

The  WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard  is an excellent card for frequent WestJet flyers. The welcome bonus is impressive, and you only need to make a single purchase to get it. The earn rate and additional benefits, including free checked bags⁴, will also be useful.

There’s no denying the card’s benefits, but you’re still restricted to WestJet or Delta code-share flights with your redemptions. This may not be an issue for some people, but those who prefer flexibility may want to see what  other travel cards  are out there. And if you're looking for a similar card from RBC and WestJet with less features and a lower annual fee, consider the WestJet RBC Mastercard instead.

Categorized: Credit Cards

Before I went deep into the world of miles and points, the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard was the main card in my wallet. Even as someone who was dipping their toes into the game, I was able to extract significant value from this card, mostly thanks to the generous annual companion fare voucher that I used to travel across North America with friends on the cheap.

Needless to say, this card holds a place in my heart since it has many perks and benefits that can result in significant savings for an individual or family who wants to simply and straightforwardly save money on their travels.

Let’s dive into our review of the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard.

Welcome Bonus

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard currently has a welcome offer in which cardholders can earn up to 450 WestJet dollars :

  • Earn 200 WestJet dollars upon first purchase
  • Earn 250 WestJet dollars upon spending $5,000 in the first 3 months

westjet mastercard travel insurance benefits

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard earns WestJet dollars and offers cardholders benefits on WestJet flights including an annual companion fare and a first free checked bag.

Check out our WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard review for more details.

If you are curious as to how you can spend $5,000 in three months for the second part of the bonus, learn more about how you can easily meet minimum spending requirements .

Earning Rates

Outside of the welcome bonus on this credit card, the most consistent way to earn WestJet dollars is through organic spending on a WestJet credit card. The earning rate on the card is rather simplistic, offering an elevated earning rate for WestJet purchases and then a catch-all category for all other purchases.

This card earns WestJet dollars at the following rate:

  • 2% back in WestJet dollars for all purchases of WestJet flights or WestJet vacation packages (2 WJD per $100 spent on WestJet flights or vacation packages)
  • 1.5% back in WestJet dollars for all other everyday purchases (1.5 WJD per $100 spent on all other purchases)

Earning up to 2% on all purchases is okay for a credit card in Canada, but definitely not top-tier when it comes to overall rewards. If you want to further maximize your purchases, such as using the best rewards credit card for grocery purchases , there are better credit cards in the market for that.

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard has an annual fee of $119 , which is similar to other comparable travel credit cards in Canada.

Redeeming WestJet Dollars

WestJet dollars can be redeemed towards flights and WestJet Vacations packages . Westjet flies throughout North America in addition to a handful of international destinations so it isn’t difficult to make a redemption, whether you are booking a complete itinerary or simply positioning yourself for your next redemption flight.

westjet aircraft in flight

There is no bad choice to redeem WestJet dollars since they use a simple points currency system. Simply put, 1 WestJet dollar will always be redeemable for 1 Canadian dollar. With this in mind, I find it is best to redeem WestJet dollars as I need them and not put too much thought into finding the best value for my points as I would do with other, more convoluted, points programs.

Check out our guide to the WestJet Rewards loyalty program to learn more about how to best redeem your WestJet dollars for flights and WestJet Vacations packages.

The WestJet RBC World Elite card comes with a wealth of travel benefits, including an annual WestJet companion voucher, free checked baggage on WestJet flights, free in-flight WiFi on WestJet, and comprehensive insurance coverage making it one of the best Mastercard credit cards in Canada .

WestJet Companion Voucher

Outside of the welcome bonus, the WestJet companion voucher is the most valuable part of this credit card. The WestJet companion voucher gives the cardholder the opportunity to book a companion on their itinerary while only paying the base fare plus taxes and fees. When using a companion voucher, the base fare is reduced to $119 for travel within North America and $399 outside of North America.

westjet mastercard travel insurance benefits

This annual companion voucher is automatically deposited into the cardholder’s WestJet Rewards account upon card approval and then at the credit card account anniversary thereafter.

The companion voucher can be applied towards any fare class, except for business. If you often find yourself traveling with a companion, this can significantly reduce your overall travel costs and may allow you to splurge on WestJet premium economy for an added-value travel experience.

Free Checked Baggage

WestJet RBC World Elite cardholders can receive one piece of free checked baggage for themselves and up to eight others on the same reservation. This is applicable on all WestJet flights, provided that the individual who booked the itinerary is the primary cardholder and remains an active cardholder.

This is the best way to save money on checked baggage with WestJet since simply holding a credit card is a low-effort play to save money on any WestJet flights you take if you often find yourself or your travel companions checking baggage. The savings with free checked bags can really add up as a result of this benefit, especially if you find yourself traveling with a partner, friend, or family on the same reservation.

Boingo WiFi Membership

Flying can be boring, but being able to browse the internet and catch up with friends mid-flight in addition to the usual TV and movie options, can make it that much more manageable.

The WestJet World Elite card provides a free Boingo WiFi membership , which can be used to access WestJet in-flight WiFi for free. While you won’t be able to stream or do anything too internet-intensive mid-flight, the WiFi is definitely good enough to message friends, do some light internet browsing, and work on the go.

Click to learn how you can leverage your WestJet RBC World Elite card to gain free WiFi for your next WestJet Flight .

Insurance Coverage

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard offers eight types of insurance coverage :

  • Emergency medical insurance
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Car rental collision and loss damage coverage
  • Trip interruption coverage
  • Flight delay coverage
  • Hotel and motel burglary insurance
  • Purchase security
  • Extended warranty coverage

Insurance coverages on credit cards can be nuanced in what is covered, so I recommend that you refer to the WestJet RBC World Elite insurance certificate for additional details, including terms and conditions for eligibility.

Who is the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard Best For?

If you are considering diversifying points programs, which is always a great idea, accruing WestJet dollars is a great option away from the typical programs in Canada such as Aeroplan or British Airways Avios . With that in mind, the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is your ticket to accruing a significant amount of dollars in the WestJet Rewards program.

Personally, I’ve found value in having a stash of WestJet for the odd flight around North America, such as our recent trip to the Waldorf Astoria in Las Vegas. Not to mention, WestJet does offer many direct flights to destinations that Air Canada does not offer direct flights to. For example, I’m heading to Victoria from Edmonton in May and I can fly direct with WestJet, whereas I would have to connect in Vancouver with Air Canada.

westjet flight network

On the other hand, my significant other has recently booked a big redemption for herself and her sisters to fly Edmonton-Calgary-Cancun for a girls’ trip on WestJet Business class on the Dreamliner. This would not have been possible without the WestJet dollars accrued from this credit card in conjunction with the RBC Avion Visa Infinite card .

Whether you are interested in flying economy, premium economy, or business class, the WestJet World Elite Mastercard can help you get closer to your next dream redemption.

Finally, the companion voucher can result in some deadly redemption combinations. My personal favorite is using it to cut the cost of a premium economy fare to $119 round trip for my travel partner and pay the whole base fare with WestJet dollars. On the other hand, if you were a family of four and both adults held a WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, each parent could book an itinerary for themselves + one child to cut the overall flight cost almost in half.

While RBC offers many credit cards that we love, the WestJet RBC World Elite offers unique WestJet benefits with a reasonable annual fee. Simply put, if you find yourself flying WestJet often, this is a good card to consider adding to and keeping in your wallet for the long term.

As a reminder, you are eligible to apply for a new RBC credit card every 90 days . If you have applied for a card more recently than that, consider if an RBC product switch to this card is right for you and your future travel plans.

Hi. I reactivated my RBC Westjet Master Card on September 29th 2023. I was suppose to receive a companion voucher for coming back. I checked in November and December 2023 a no voucher is found. I used the card over Christmas, I called RBC and was advised no voucher would show up on my account until 3-4 weeks after using my card. That puts the companion voucher into 2024. Will I only receive one voucher for 2024. Tried calling your 1-888-937-8538 to speak to Westjet Rewards but got no where. What do I get for coming back to the credit card ?

The web page here https://frugalflyer.ca/credit-card/rbc-westjet-world-elite/ says $200 WJD after a $5000 spend in the first 3 months, but elsewhere it’s mentioned as $300 WJD. What’s the ‘real’ answer? Thanks!

It is $300. Thank you for pointing out the error.

WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard

westjet mastercard travel insurance benefits

Best offer is available publicly until July 31, 2024

Signup bonus:, annual fee:, annual interest rates:, earning rate:, perks & benefits:.

The WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard is WestJet’s premier co-branded credit card in Canada, and offers a wealth of WestJet-centric benefits, the most significant of which is the companion voucher . †

westjet mastercard travel insurance benefits

Bonuses & Fees

Currently, the welcome offer on the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard for up to 450 WestJet dollars, †   structured as follows:

  • Earn 250 WestJet dollars upon first purchase †
  • Earn 200 WestJet dollars upon spending $5,000 in the first three months †

The annual fee on this card is $119, † with additional users costing $59. †

Earning Rewards

With the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard, you’ll earn the following on everyday spending:

  • 2% back in WestJet dollars per dollar spent on eligible WestJet flights and vacations †
  • 1.5% back in WestJet dollars per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases †

Redeeming Rewards

What exactly are WestJet dollars? Well, 450 WestJet dollars can be applied as a $450 credit to the base fare of any WestJet booking. Therefore, as long as you fly with WestJet once a year to the tune of at least $450, the signup bonus is as good as cash in your pocket.

WestJet Rewards allows you to redeem WestJet dollars towards the cost of any WestJet flight, so there’s no need to worry about “award availability” or anything like that. As long as there’s a seat available for purchase, you can use your WestJet dollars towards it.

The 450 WestJet dollars welcome bonus doesn’t have to be used up all in one go either. You’re free to earn the bonus, wait for one of WestJet’s deals to pop up on a route you’re interested in, and then apply the bonus towards your booking.

However, it’s important to point out that since the value of WestJet dollars is limited, you wouldn’t be able to find out-sized value with redemptions as you could with other programs.

Moreover, WestJet dollars can only be applied to offset against the base fare — excluding items such as taxes, fees, and other air transportation charges.

Perks & Benefits

The most significant of these benefits is the free checked bag benefit on WestJet flights †  for the primary cardholder and up to eight other passengers on the same booking. †

Checked baggage normally costs $30–35.40 on WestJet, so this benefit alone could be worth up to $100 per trip if travelling as a family of four, or potentially even more if you’re travelling as a larger group.

Other benefits include the ability to save 3¢/L on fuel at PetroCanada whilst earning 20% more PetroPoints, † access to airport lounges as part of the Mastercard Travel Pass Program provided by DragonPass † (although fees do apply), and access to the Mastercard Concierge Services for last-minute restaurant and event bookings. †

The other major selling point of this card is an annual round-trip companion voucher for travel on WestJet. † This companion voucher can be redeemed in one of the following ways:

$119 base fare (plus taxes, fees and charges) for travel within Canada or the Contiguous U.S.,

$399 base fare (plus taxes, fees and charges) for travel to the rest of WestJet’s network in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, or Europe

Since it’s a companion voucher, you have to be booking an itinerary for at least two people – the first passenger would pay full price, while the second passenger would enjoy the companion voucher’s promotional price.

exc-5cbf2bda1905f4631cee902c

The vouchers are valid for round-trip tickets in economy or premium class (not business class). You’ll also have to pay taxes and fees on the companion ticket, in addition to the discounted base fare. †

In addition, cardholders will also receive a Status Lift of $500 in tier qualifying spend for every $15,000 spent on the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, helping you qualify towards WestJet status. †

Finally, the card offers a complimentary Boingo Wi-Fi membership, which can be used for free Wi-Fi onboard WestJet flights . †

Insurance Coverage

As a World Elite product, this credit card comes with comprehensive premium travel insurance, including: †

Emergency medical insurance for the first 15 consecutive days of any out-of-province trips for travellers under the age of 65 or the first three consecutive days for those 65 and up †

Trip interruption insurance of up to $5,000 per covered person †

Auto rental damage and theft insurance, which can help you save on the insurance fees that rental companies like to impose for vehicles up to a MSRP of $65,000 †

Hotel burglary insurance of up to $2,500 in total †

Travel accident insurance of up to $500,000 against accidental death or dismemberment †

You’ll also enjoy top-drawer purchase protection benefits, including an extended warranty that doubles the original manufacturer’s warranty for up to one year, and coverage against accidental loss or damage of personal property for up to 90 days from the date of purchase. †

Historical Offers

Legal disclaimers.

† Terms and conditions apply. Refer to the RBC ® website for the most up-to-date information.

As a World Elite product, this credit card has a minimum personal annual income requirement of $80,000 or a minimum household income of $150,000 to be eligible. Longstanding RBC clients may have success visiting their branch to see if these requirements can be waived.

If you don't meet the minimum income requirement on the World Elite card, you can also apply for the lower-tier WestJet RBC Mastercard, with a weaker welcome bonus and companion fare.

Downsides of the WestJet RBC Mastercard

Although the WestJet RBC Mastercard is a great all-around travel credit card , there are a few downsides.

First, you can only earn and redeem WestJet dollars, meaning you are limited to WestJet flights and vacation packages. WestJet flies to the Caribbean, Canada, the US, Central America, and only some European countries.

If you want to travel to any of the countries not listed here , you’ll need to take a different airline, and you cannot redeem your WestJet dollars for it.

Second, there isn’t much travel and medical insurance included with this card. You can add optional travel insurance to your card at a fee.

How To Apply for the WestJet RBC Mastercard

No minimum income requirement is needed to apply for this RBC WestJet Mastercard. As with all other credit card applications, you should be a Canadian resident with a Canadian credit file and the age of majority in your province or territory.

You can apply for the WestJet RBC Mastercard here .

How To Redeem WestJet Dollars

You can redeem WestJet dollars on WestJet flights or vacation packages on their website.

You need to sign in to your account on the WestJet Rewards portal, then simply book the flight or vacation you desire. You can either pay in partial or full WestJet dollars.

Alternatives to the WestJet RBC Mastercard

If you’re looking for an alternate travel rewards card, consider the following travel credit cards in Canada:

WestJet RBC Mastercard vs WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is a supercharged version of the regular WestJet RBC Mastercard. It has a $119 annual fee, with supplementary cards costing $59.

Everyday purchases get you closer to achieving Status Lift, and you earn 0.5% to 1% more WestJet dollars on every purchase.

You get an upgraded World Elite round-trip companion voucher and a free first checked bag for the primary cardholder and eight guests.

WestJet RBC Mastercard vs American Express Cobalt Card

The American Express Cobalt Card has a $12.99 monthly fee with a 20.99% purchase interest rate and a 21.99% cash advance interest rate.

You can earn up to 5 American Express Membership Rewards points on every purchase, which can be redeemed for travel, gift cards, merchandise, statement credits, and more.

This card includes a $100 USD hotel voucher, mobile device insurance , and a few different types of travel insurance.

Shopping coverage and American Express experiences and events are also included.

Is the WestJet RBC Mastercard For You?

If you are a loyal WestJet customer and travel often, this card may be for you. However, remember that you are only limited to earning and redeeming WestJet dollars and cannot use them on anything else.

If you want more travel insurance and benefits, consider applying for another top travel rewards card, like the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card (which saves on FX fees) or the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card .

The WestJet Group names Diederik Pen as airline President

westjet mastercard travel insurance benefits

The WestJet Group today announced the appointment of Diederik Pen as President of WestJet Airlines effective April 1, 2024. As WestJet Group Chief Operating Officer and President of WestJet Airlines, Pen will continue to report to Alexis von Hoensbroech, the WestJet Group’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO). As CEO, Alexis von Hoensbroech will continue to maintain overall responsibility for the WestJet Group and its strategic direction.

“Diederik’s experience as a respected leader, with a track record of operational success, will be critical as we continue our growth strategy, including the integration of Sunwing Airlines,” said von Hoensbroech. “With the largest narrow-body aircraft order book in Canada, it is critical we optimize safe and reliable performance for our business, as we deliver more affordable options and better connectivity to Canadians.”

Since joining the WestJet Group in October of 2021, as Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, Pen has been instrumental in enhancing the operational performance of the Group. Leading operations into recovery, he has been influential across airline operations, inflight, airports, technical operations, labour relations, safety, crew resources and training. As WestJet Group Chief Operating Officer and President of WestJet Airlines, Pen will be responsible for the Group’s day-to-day operations, successful labour negotiations and overall operational reliability that WestJet guests expect. He will also assume the role of the Transport Canada Accountable Executive.

“Across the past three years, WestJetters have demonstrated their relentless commitment to the travel needs of Canadians and the performance of our airline. I am incredibly grateful to work alongside such a dedicated, innovative and passionate team,” said Pen. “As we lean into the momentum of a financially and operationally strong 2023 and focus on the WestJet Group’s future growth, it has never been more important that we continue to work together to increase our reliability and performance.”

Prior to joining WestJet, Pen brought with him more than 25 years of aviation-industry experience from the Asia-Pacific and European regions. As an Executive Vice-President and Chief Operations Officer for multiple airlines he drove significant expansions, while overseeing operations for fast-growing, ultra-low-cost businesses.
