The North American Poker Tour is Set for a Triumphant Return

The North American Poker Tour (NAPT) is one of those poker tours that you never knew you missed until it wasn’t there. Poker fans almost took it for granted that the PokerStars showpiece that burst onto the scene in 2010 only to disappear close to a year later. Now, over a decade later, it’s back. Coming to Resorts World in Las Vegas, the 2023 NAPT takes place in November. It’s going to be an event in every sense of the word.

North American Poker Tout 2023

The North American Poker Tout is set to wow poker players and fans alike in 2023 after a 12-year hiatus.

A Secondary Victim of Black Friday

Back in 2011, ‘ Black Friday ’ shook the poker world. Full Tilt Poker was investigated, online poker was shut down and the poker world went into shock. Of all the blast zones that the crushing decision to close down online poker in the United States left, one of the smallest was a poker tour that had only been around a year. Or was it?

The North American Poker Tour was a popular poker tour. It had big name players winning huge prizes and it took place in Las Vegas, a city – Sin City – which PokerStars, the team behind the NAPT, have rarely visited over the years. The European Poker Tour, as well as derivatives such as the APPT or the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) took players around the world, but not to Las Vegas.

The first NAPT took place in the Bahamas, where Harrison Gimbel won $2.2 million, before William Reynolds also mopped up over half a million dollars. At the Venetian in February of 2010, Tom Marchese ($827,000) and Ashton Griffin ($576,000) both won titles. The Mohegan Sun in Conneticut was the next stop on the NAPT, with Vanessa Selbst ($750,000) and Jason Mercier ($475,000) winning as PokerStars Team Pros at the height of poker’s ‘poster player’ era.

In November of 2010, Joe Tehan won $725,000 at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles, before Galen Hall ($2.3m) at the PCA and Vanessa Selbst ($450,000) again at the Mohegan Sun won titles. That was April 13 th , 2011. Two days later, the poker world in the United States imploded. In 12 years since, the NAPT has never returned.

The NAPT is Back!

After such a long time away, excitement will be mixed with nerves for everyone involved, but as the Vice President of PokerStars North America, Steve Preiss , told us, the team are thrilled about the return of a tournament classic which still has its story to tell. We asked Steve how the return of the NAPT came about.

Steve Priess

Steve Priess | Photo credit: Las Vegas Review Journal

“As PokerStars is the online market leader in North America, the next logical step was to expand our brand footprint to live events,” Steve says. “The live event market is thriving here. We’ve seen events like our Summer Series at Philly Live absolutely crush it, thanks to the incredible support we received from the players. Managing to triple the guarantees of the series was a huge indication of just how popular PokerStars Live events can be and made the return of the NAPT very easy.”

Back in the 2010/2011 seasons, the NAPT had a really good following and some big winners. There’s one player who Steve loved seeing in action… although whether they’ll be back this time is anyone’s guess. Either way, he expects a whole new feel to the event series.

“I liked seeing the Selbst wins,” Steve admits. “I have a lot of respect for her game and as a person. I’m not looking to necessarily recreate a vibe. The game and how we view and consume it has changed so much in 12 years. What I really want to capture is the world class offering that we provide at all PokerStars Live events. They are such player-focused events. I think the North American market will respond well to that.”

With a new era of poker players to attract, the NAPT will move with the times and as well as offering a unique atmosphere, mix it up a little to make sure that the ‘GTO generation’ are catered for with new innovations.

READ MORE : What the Hell is GTO?

“The innovations are more of a collective offering of many things,” Steve details. “I don’t want to tip our hand too much on this yet, but the focus or innovations with be player driven. What can we do that makes this an event that players love and will want to come back to time and time again? This goes from a series of player-focused events to the general level of service they’ll receive at the tables and tournament.”

An Evolution of the Game

Poker has evolved hugely in the past decade and players will be tempted back by a festival that has changed with the times while still appealing to fans who logged the NAPT as one of their favorites ‘back in the day’.

“The game itself has evolved many times over. Live events have to a degree, too. There have been a lot of innovations there, from better integration of online accounts to cages for buy-ins, to fun things like Mystery Bounty tournaments that we’ve introduced. Our focus – how we move with the times – it goes back again to being what we hope sets this tour apart: being truly focused on all players. We know the player experience is good, but it’s a question of how we can expand on that. How can we make it more than just buying into a tournament and playing some poker? That’s where our focus is,” says Steve.

The return of the NAPT symbolizes genuine reinvestment in the live space from PokerStars. Steve is keen to remind us that this is merely an extension of ‘Stars investment in the future of the game.

“The re-investment has already taken place in Europe with the EPT. It’ll now continue to grow and thrive in North America, across Brazil, and at other locations. And as I said, we’ve already begun that process with Summer Series. The appetite for live events has never been greater. You’ll see PokerStars more and more across North American card rooms and casinos.”

While his role is key in putting the show together, Steve is every bit the poker fan he always has been, and on that basis, it’s all about one element to him – those who play the game.

“Personally, I’m looking forward to meeting and talking to our players,” he says. “This is a competitive space – both online and offline – and I’d like to hear what matters the most to them, what they enjoy from us, and where we can improve.”

Resorts World in Las Vegas will host the 2023 NAPT event, and could attract a massive field, coming just weeks before the World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championship.

Mixed Game Festival Day 4

Resorts World Poker Room

When Does the NAPT Kick Off?

After 12 years, the return of the PokerStars North American Poker Tour is a matter of real significance, not only to Americans but worldwide. If ‘Stars are reinvesting in live poker on American soil, then it’s a natural assumption that to do so means that live poker is closer than ever in returning across the 50 states of America, rather than a little over a handful.

Taking place between November 4 th and 12 th , the NAPT takes place at Resorts World, just prior to the kickoff of Cardplayer Lifestyle Mixed Game Festival VI . It is one of the most exciting and fun venues in the whole of Las Vegas and the world. The poker, like the neon lights of Sin City, is electric throughout. Sin City will be buzzing when the NAPT returns to the heart of Las Vegas just a week before Formula 1 is welcomed to the world-famous Vegas strip for the first time.

We can’t wait for the games to begin!

PokerStars NAPT 2024

Here’s everything you need to know about the return of the NAPT .

Last updated: January 5, 2024

PokerStars live NAPT 2023

The North American Poker Tour ( NAPT ) from PokerStars returned for the first time in twelve years in 2023.

The much anticipated first stop on the NAPT 2023-24 tour took place at Resorts World in Las Vegas, Nevada. The action played out in mid- November 2023. The NAPT 2023 stop featured 32 events, highlights included the Main Event — which smashed its $1.5 million guarantee plus Master Bounty, High Roller events a PokerStars Cup event.

Here we have put together everything you need to know about the NAPT LV stop in 2023, plus information and predictions on 2024 tour stops.

In this guide, we cover:

  • Everything that happened at the 2023 NAPT Las Vegas.
  • What is planned for 2024.
  • The NAPT past and present.
  • NAPT Las Vegas 2023 highlights.
  • Online qualifiers to the NAPT , are they running and in which markets.
  • All your NAPT frequently asked questions answered.

What is the North American Poker Tour ( NAPT )?

The North American Poker Tour , or NAPT as it is more commonly known, is a live poker tour run by online poker operator PokerStars in North America.

The tour abruptly ended over a decade ago with the advent of Black Friday. In 2023 it picked up where it left off, and returned for its third season, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Highlight events include a Main Event, that exceeds its $1.5 million guarantee, Mystery Bounty, High Roller and PokerStars Cup events.

The NAPT 2024 Stops

It is confirmed that the NAPT will be returning to Las Vegas this year, we just don’t know exactly when. Although PokerStars themselves have not confirmed the stop a NAPT 2024 package will be given away later this month during the upcoming Mixed Game Festival, a popular poker tour for mixed game enthusiasts.

The NAPT package winner will be free to choose any stop from the schedule — though where further stops will be remain to be decided. The 2024 NAPT “will be releasing scheduled stops for their events later this year,” according to the host of the Mixed Game Festival, Cardplayer Lifestyle — certainly hinting at more stops than just Las Vegas.

2024 Predictions

The landscape in 2023 looks very different from what it did in 2011 when the NAPT took place in its entity. Today, PokerStars operates in the regulated US markets of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New Jersey. As such, live stops in these states can be expected.

Stops elsewhere in the US could be likely — with PokerStars following the path seen on the Moneymaker Tour in 2019 that stopped in eleven locations across the entirety of the US. The stops that formed part of the Road to PSPC promotion in 2022 would also indicate that stops in Philly are highly likely.

NAPT Las Vegas Online Qualifiers

Online qualifiers are expected for the 2024 NAPT stops, but no information has yet to be released.

Live Satellites

Ahead of the NAPT Las Vegas stop PokerStars published a list of live satellites that helped players avoid paying the full sticker price of these events.

As more NAPT stops are announced we will update this section with live satellite information as soon as it is announced.

NAPT Las Vegas 2023

The NAPT made a triumphant return after a 12-year hiatus back in November 2023.

Action kicked off in Las Vegas in November 2023. PokerStars chose the iconic Resorts World Las Vegas as the perfect setting for the first stop of the 2023 NAPT . There was a High Roller, Super High Roller, and Mystery Bounty events, a PokerStars Cup, and a Main Event for players to choose from.

The Main Event took place between November 6 to 11 and exceeding its $1.5 million guarantee. There were six Day 1 flights, allowing players their chance to get a seat at the table.

“For us, we are putting the focus on providing an incredible on-site experience for all of our players while creating great content,” Steve Preiss, VP at PokerStars North America told pokerfuse ahead of the NAPT November 2023 stop. “PokerStars has always truly been a customer-first brand. We strive to provide our players a safe environment with world-class service. That’s the same goal offline too.”

There was comprehensive streaming schedule with commentary from PokerStars alumni, James Hartigan and Joe Stapleton. Maria Ho, Nick Walsh, and Griffin Benger. In addition to the English stream, a Brazilian-Portuguese broadcast was available on the operator’s Brazilian channels and commentated by Felipe de Paulo and Flavio del Valle.

Ahead of the NAPT Las Vegas stop, PokerStars were also busy signing talent.

A partnership with NextGen Poker, a team of poker enthusiasts running a YouTube channel with over 200,000 subscribers is one such signing. Jack, Rosey, and Frankie, the faces behind NextGen Poker, will become brand ambassadors for the US markets and help provide a unique coverage of operator’s live events to new audiences.

Someone else to join the ambassador ranks, is a name familiar to PokerStars, New York Times Bestselling author Maria Konnikova. Konnikova returns as a brand ambassador to PokerStars after a 4 year hiatus.

Konnikova will highlight the operator’s ongoing investment in the US and Ontario markets.

“I’m very happy to once again be joining the PokerStars team as an ambassador,” said Maria Konnikova, via press release. “Poker is a game of skill that can teach us so much about our minds and ourselves — and I can’t wait to share my passion for it along with the incredible team at PokerStars. I’m quite excited for the vision that PokerStars has for U.S. expansion and am thrilled to play a small part in helping the world appreciate the true beauty and promise of a game I have come to love.”

PokerStars X Oracle Red Bull Racing

Both brands of PokerStars and Oracle Red Bull Racing ( ORBR ) where heavily intertwined in the run up, during and post the NAPT Las Vegas stop.

Since 2022, PokerStars has been an official sponsor of Oracle Red Bull Racing, but 2023 saw the partnership strengthen more than ever, as the hotly anticipated Las Vegas Formula 1 stop runs in Vegas just a week after the conclusion of the NAPT Las Vegas stop.

Not only did PokerStars and ORBR work together to give fifty lucky players Vegas Gold Passes worth over $20k, allowing them not only to join the NAPT action but also to stay after the event, watch all races, and enjoy a full-scale Oracle Red Bull Racing fan experience. But now, PokerStars are giving players a once in a lifetime chance to win bespoke F1 wheel covers that will be signed by three-time World Champion Max Verstappen and his ORBR teammate, Sergio Perez

Three charity tournaments between the pair ran at Resorts World Las Vegas on November 16, 17, and 18.

These charity initiatives support ORBR’s official charity partner, Wings for Life, founded by Red Bull’s Dietrich Mateschitz, who was committed to advancing spinal cord injury research through funding world-class scientific studies and clinical trials.

The Return of The Big Game

The Las Vegas stop saw the return of PokerStar’s popular poker show The Big Game — this time dubbed The Big Game on Tour.

How it works:

  • The popular show pitches one amateur or “loose cannon” against five professional players.
  • The loose cannon gets to keep anything over the initial buy-in after playing a predetermined number of hands, but they cannot take home any part of the original buy-in.
  • To become a loose cannon players will have the chance to enter a satellite tournament on November 5 alongside the NAPT .
  • These exclusive shootout tournaments will result in 20 finalists who will advance to the casting stage.
  • The chosen 20 finalist will have to audition in front of a panel of judges, and two of them will receive a $50,000 buy-in.
  • PokerStars will then proceed to produce a series of 10 episodes to be aired in 2024.

During the NAPT Las Vegas stop both loose cannon spots went to female players Lily Newhouse and Nikki Limo. Both ladies successfully made their way through qualifying freerolls during NAPT Las Vegas, beating their respective tables and moving to the audition stage.

The NAPT History

Back in 2010, the NAPT debuted with stops in the Caribbean, Las Vegas, Connecticut, and Los Angeles.

The events on the 2011 NAPT were as follows:

  • Paradise Island, the Bahamas: PokerStars Caribbean Adventure ( PCA )
  • Paradise Island, the Bahamas: PokerStars Caribbean Adventure ( PCA ) High Roller

  • Las Vegas, Nevada, US: NAPT Venetian High Roller Bounty Shootout
  • Uncasville, Connecticut, US: NAPT Mohegan Sun High Roller Bounty Shootout :

NAPT Mohegan Sun ran for five days, concluding on April 13, 2011 — just two days before Black Friday on April 15.

The North American Championship of Online Poker ( NACOOP ) played out online in the Fall of 2023, and Main Event winners were gifted NAPT Las Vegas Main Event entry, plus a seat at the NAPT High Roller event.

It was the first time ever that PokerStars ran a NACOOP series across Ontario, Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Meet the Final (Two) Tables of Massive Triton Jeju Main Event

Heading into the final day of the triton super high roller series main event in jeju france’s jean noel thorel holds a commanding lead, with patrik antonius, stephen chidwick and chris brewer among the players still chasing the title..

north american poker tour

The $100,000 buy-in Triton High Roller Series Jeju Main Event drew a record-breaking 216 entrants, hitting such a large number, in fact, that the field was unable to reach a final table as scheduled for Saturday

Instead, 15 players return for Day 3 of the tournament, each of them looking to take home the most coveted title of a Triton series in Jeju that has broken records from the start. Through 11 days of action, more than a dozen players have banked seven-figure prizes through nine events – and the Main Event only continues that trend.

With a prize pool of $21.6 million, the champion will win $4.33 million and the top six spots are each guaranteed over $1 million each. Jean-Noel Thorel of France holds a considerable chip lead over the rest of the field as he chases a long-awaited first Triton title at what would be his fourth career Triton final table. A fair ways back, a pack of four players led by Patrik Antonius and recently crowned first-time Triton winner Elton Tsang .

Day 3 will be a chance for Stephen Chidwick to make a run at the No. 3 spot on poker’s All-Time Money List and close the gap separating Justin Bonomo and Bryn Kenney from everyone else. Among the shortest stacks looking to forge a comeback on Saturday, you’ll find Mario Mosboeck, who finished as the runner-up in the WPT Big One for One Drop at Wynn Las Vegas back in December, and Chris Brewer.

Play will resume at 1 p.m. local time at Jeju Shinhwa World (midnight EST) with live streaming coverage on all of Triton’s content channels. A champion is set to be crowned by the time the day’s action is done, and here’s what the remaining 15 participants are playing for:

1st: $4,330,000 2nd: $2,875,000 3rd: $2,105,000 4th: $1,697,000 5th: $1,330,000 6th: $1,008,000 7th: $739,000 8th: $543,000 9th: $451,000 10th-11th: $378,000 12th-13th: $330,000 14th-15th: $298,000

Ahead of the restart, let’s take a deeper look at the biggest stacks remaining in the tournament.

north american poker tour

Jean-Noel Thorel | 11,025 ,000   (88 big blinds)

France Lifetime Live Tournament Earnings: $15,972,400 Biggest Live Cash: $2,830,000 , 2nd, 2023 Triton Super High Roller Series London $132,500 Main Event

Jean-Noel Thorel has been in this spot before on a number of different occasions. He has High Roller results dating back to 2009, four seven-figure tournament cashes, and three career final tables at Triton Super High Roller Series events alone.

But there’s a common theme among Thorel’s biggest career results: second place. Of his 10 largest career tournament cashes, six of them are second-place finishes in high rollers, including the top three.

Thorel is as well-positioned as he’s ever been to break through in this event, with nearly twice as many chips as his nearest competitor heading into Saturday’s finale. With a victory, Thorel would clear $20 million in live career tournament earnings.

north american poker tour

Patrik Antonius | 5,575 ,000   (45 big blinds)

Finland Lifetime Live Tournament Earnings: $17,632,341 Biggest Live Cash: $3,153,551 , 2nd, 2018 Super High Roller Bowl Macau

Patrik Antonius’ breakout year in poker came all the way back in 2005. Bookended by a pair of big results on the World Poker Tour – 12th at the 2005 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, and second for over $1 million in the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic, Antonius also made back-to-back EPT Main Event final tables including his first major title EPT Baden.

For the better part of the last 20 years, Antonius has remained competitive at the very highest cash game and tournament stakes that poker has to offer. He’s won millions many times over, and found success on the Triton Super High Roller Series to the tune of $5,667,588 and one tournament title.

north american poker tour

Elton Tsang | 5,425 ,000   (43 big blinds)

Hong Kong Lifetime Live Tournament Earnings: $22,050,599 Biggest Live Cash: $12,248,912 , 1st, 2016 €1 Million Monte-Carlo One Drop Extravaganza

Elton Tsang popped up on the poker radar in 2016, when he won a €1 million buy-in event in Monte Carlo for a first-place prize of over $12 million – one of the biggest ever awarded in a tournament.

Since 2022, almost all of Tsang’s results have come in Triton events, where he became one of the winningest players in the tour’s history without a title. That changed earlier this week, when Tsang broke through to the tune of $4.21 million by winning the $150,000 event in Jeju. If things go Tsang’s way on Saturday, his performance in Korea over the course of a few days would be one for the record books.

north american poker tour

Justin Saliba | 4,875 ,000   (39 big blinds)

Hong Kong Lifetime Live Tournament Earnings: $5,366,816 Biggest Live Cash: $690,000, 3rd, Triton Super High Roller Series London $60,000 7-Handed No Limit Hold’em

The three players above Justin Saliba in the chip counts after Day 2 of the Triton Jeju Main Event have a few things on their poker resumes that Saliba does not, most notably when it comes to seven-figure results. But Saliba has a few things Thorel, Antonius and Tsang don’t as well – namely two WSOP bracelets, and a PokerGO title.

Over the last year-and-a-half, Saliba has racked up his five biggest career live tournament cashes, including his first Triton final table in London back in July. Strangely enough, two of his five career-best results came in tournaments won by Bin Weng in 2023 – the $25,300 High Roller at the WPT World Championship in Wynn Las Vegas, and Borgata’s ‘The Return’.

A win on Saturday in Jeju would be a milestone and the culmination of a precipitous rise amongst poker’s elite.

north american poker tour

Igor Yaroshevskyy | 4,775 ,000   (38 big blinds)

Ukraine Lifetime Live Tournament Earnings: $6,024,820 Biggest Live Cash: $357,105,  3rd, 2017 PokerStars Championship Barcelona €25,000 High Roller

Rounding out the lead pack is Igor Yaroshevskyy , another player who is looking for a signature live win on Saturday in Jeju. He’s been close before; Yaroshevskyy has a pair of WPT final tables, at the 2015 L.A. Poker Classic and 2016 WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic. Yaroshevskyy also has two career WSOP final tables and three Triton final tables to his record.

But the Triton Jeju Main Event represents an opportunity to blow all of those results away. With a couple of pay jumps on Saturday he’d lock up a career-best result, and a win would immediately increase his career tournament earnings by over 40%.

Other Players to Keep an Eye On

  • Stephen Chidwick will start Day 3 of the Triton Jeju Main Event right smack in the middle of the chip counts in eighth place. With the cash he’s locked up already, Chidwick will pass Jason Koon for third on poker’s all-time money list. If he doesn’t get a pay jump, Chidwick and Koon will be just $5,000 apart on that list, about as razor-thin a margin as you can get for two guys who’d have just shy of $56 million in live tournament cashes.
  • At the bottom of the chip counts sit three players who could each be dangerous if a spin-up is in the cards for them on Saturday. Mario Mosboeck is just a few months removed from a career-best result after finishing second in the $1 million buy-in WPT Big One for One Drop in Las Vegas. The Austrian also added another $1.19 million by winning the $25,000 GGMillion$ event a week ago in Jeju. Two American round out the bottom two spots – Chris Brewer , whose last 12 months have featured a half-dozen staggering results, and Kevin Rabichow .

End of Day 2 Chip Counts

  • Jean Noel Thorel – 11,025,000
