2020 Transit Adding Cruise Control using a factory wheel with cruise control

mk7 transit cruise control retrofit

Nice work, it’s pretty cool that all OEM functionality works with just a steering wheel. Even the lights on the dash work unlike on previous years without upgrading the dash.

redwall18

Hi! Do you think this process will follow the same for a 2015 Transit?

You had to replace the whole wheel? Any way you felt like you could have just reaplaced the modules on the right and left without dismounting the wheel? Any special tools needed?

If you go on YouTube you can watch videos on removing the airbag. It is simple as you just turn the wheel to 3 and 9 o’clock positions and use a screwdriver to release the lock tab. I unhooked my battery ground cable first for safety. Simply unplug the horn, airbag connector and steering wheel button wiring harness. Next there is one nut to remove on the center of the wheel under the airbag and the wheel just comes off with no special puller needed. The switches looked like they might just snap into the wheel but you need to remove everything anyway to get to the harness connection.

2018 MY, That does not look like a early model Transit steering wheel.

It is a 2020 transit.

I wasn't trying to save money necessarily, just thought install could be faster if the whole wheel didn't need pulled. Guess either way it's not a big deal.

Pretty Cool Jeff and the fact that you have functional Cruise Control now with just the cost of a used steering wheel and a code reader must feel pretty good right about now as well. Im also imagining you can use the code reader for many others things too. Right?

deanfbart

anyone done this on a 2021 with FDRS I am a ford dealer with factory equipment

FRDS? ford diagnostic and repair system? Are you able to change the central configuration in the BCM, and the hexidecimal As-Built section for the SCCM? Then you should be able to. Or you could manually change the VIN.ab file, then upload that to the BCM and SCCM. Those could all be possibilities but it might be easiest to just order an eml327 OBD2 adapter from amazon then download forscan and get a free 2 month license and follow the directions that @Jeff transit posted in this thread. Other people on this forum have posted about dealers using forscan to make mods to vehicle on this forum (adding a trailer brake controller to a 2020 transit)

Will this scanner work? I’m not familiar with this stuff and unsure of what “MS-CAN/HS-CAN switch for Ford” means. Amazon.com Also, I don't see Forscan Pro on forscan.org

So I did get the ELM37, changed the steering wheel to one with cruise controls, got connected but can't edit or read any of the stuff listed in post #1; for example, when I select Configuration and Programming it looks like this and I can't edit any of the modules listed, do I have to "run service procedure" to get there?.....did "run service procedure" and that did it, I was able to edit.

Did you get a extended license for forscan? https://forscan.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=836 If you read the entire post it describes how to get a free license, it may take a couple of days to generate the key, or you could pay.

Anyone in socal area with the right equip and know how able to help me on my new 2021 awd ecoboost with this process if I source the right steering wheel/column?

My gf lives in the Mar Vista part of LA but I won’t be back there for another month. I could do it after that but it’s really pretty simple to do and the directions are very spelled out in this thread. If you want me to do it PM me.

  • purchase same year steering wheel with cruise control buttons
  • download and license FORscan (including USB drivers)
  • purchase ELM327 OBD2 USB adapter
  • change the BCM cruise configuration to "with cruise control"
  • change the SCCM 724-02-01 address to B008 7000 0056

First time using the remote start fob (separate from key) since making the updates for the Cruise and it won’t start the van....anyone else have this problem too, or is it probably unrelated? The van is less than a year old so it’s probably not the remote battery.

Did you ever figure out what was the cause for the remote start not working

Jeff transit said: First and foremost l would like to thank dinocarsfast for all the help getting my cruise to work in my Van. To get cruise to work in my van that already had steering wheel controls for my dash info screen and for my bluetooth and radio controls I simply replaced the steering wheel with a used one from ebay from a wrecked van that had the additional cruise control buttons on it. The clock spring didn't need changed on my vehicle as the wiring harness had all the correct connectors/pinouts. Next was the tricky part. I brought my van to the local dealer. That was a waste of several hours worth of diagnostics charges because they couldn't help me. I give the tech credit because he tried but his software wouldn't allow him to change it. I knew upfront that I was getting billed for the hours with or without success. Lesson learned. I went online and bought the forscan tool from ebay. Mine is the forscan pro model. I downloaded the software and installed it and followed the directions from forscan.org to get the liscense key. Next I changed the setting in the bcm (not the as built module) for with cruise control. View attachment 154809 That still didn't fix my issues. I had a couple of DTC codes that my steering wheel buttons didn't work. View attachment 154810 Next I was advised by dinocarsfast to go to the sccm and change my hexadecimal codes as follows. After I did this my DTC went away and my cruise and info screen in my dash started working. It is address 724-02-01. the original numbers were B028 B000 00B6. The new numbers are B008 7000 0056. I changed those and it now works like a factory cruise optioned van. View attachment 154811 View attachment 154812 View attachment 154813 View attachment 154814 Click to expand...

I have a 2021 ford transit ans I'm adding factory cruse control I have activated the cruse control and changed the hexadecimal the right controls on the steering are working fine but the left controls with the cruse control doesn't can you please let me know of anything else I can do to get it to work

I'm having same issue. Went through process entered code etc, buttons on cluster don't work, cruise doesn't work yet. Were you able to troubleshoot this?

Did you change the setting the in central configuration too? You might need to be in engineering mode

Mine don't show those options

OEM Steering Wheel Controls For Ford Transit H1BT-9E740-AB Scratches Marks | eBay

My guess is that it should work but you might also need to buy the harness that connects that bezel to the steering angle sensor aka clock spring. When I googled that part though it seems to be for a festiva or another model other than the transit so idk it might be better to just find the part that is made for a transit.

Anybody got a Ford factory part number for the 2020-2022 steering wheel with cruise buttons? Am having trouble finding a used one. If it's not crazy expensive, might be better to order from Ford. My VIN obviously is not gonna generate the correct part number.

UPDATE: OK all. I was able to follow the instructions in the OP and successfully added cruise control to my 2022 AWD 150. I downloaded the free version of FORscan, as well as the free 2 month license. I purchased the recommended OBD adapter and found a steering wheel from a wrecked 2020 Transit at a wrecking yard in Ohio. I believe I found it by running a search on car-parts.com. I called the wrecking yard to make sure it was still available, and then placed the order. Steering wheel: $85 shipped (excellent condition, no airbag) OBDII adapter: $60 Time to install: free - had a light day at work Some info left out of the OP: You have to click "write" after making your change. Then hit the "stop" key, and then go back in and check to make sure that the change was made. Your headlights will blink a couple of times after you hit "write". There were a ton of options when turning on cruise control. The first one just says "cruise control", but there are a bunch of options having to do with adaptive this and that. I just wanted normal cruise control so I selected the first option. I don't know if my vehicle is capable of the adaptive features, it does have the stupid lane avoidance stuff which I usually keep off anyway, so I am guessing it is, but I didn't want to mess with stuff too much, I just wanted regular cruise control. I did have to pop the airbag out of my old wheel and transfer it to the new wheel. This was not difficult once I figured out how the clips work. I recommend a small handheld mirror and flashlight to shine into the release ports in the back of the wheel so you can see what you are doing, as well as disconnect the negative battery terminal before doing this. FYI I did NOT have the option of ordering this vehicle with anything LESS than the expensive adaptive cruise system, so the fact that I was able to avoid the high tech stuff while doing this is a big bonus. Shame on Ford for not giving folks the options on the technology that is truly available with these vehicles. Why, it's almost like they want to swindle us out of more money. Jeez, who woulda thought? I was able to do this even though I am not an IT type of guy. I don't know how to code a thing. Good luck all, and thanks again to all of you guys who take the time to post this stuff online. I drive a lot of freeway miles, this is a real game-changer for me.

automcd said: I'm glad to find this thread, I'm going throught this exact process right now. I found the buttons new with the following part numbers: SW8579 SW8576 I got mine from WheelerFleet.com but it look almost a month. They didn't cost much tho. Click to expand...

I hope it works, great find finding just the buttons instead of the entire steering wheel. Update us if you have any success or failures

@automcd did the new switch pack come with the wiring connectors or did you just plug in the switch to the existing connector in the steering wheel? If you just plugged in the switch to the existing connector did you check in the schematics that all of the wires are the same from the switch to the steering angle sensor? This is just a guess but a quick look at ebay pictures of steering wheels they look like they have more wires than the picture of a wheel on the first page of this thread.

That was my thought too. The wiring harnesses from the switch assemblies might be different on a non-CC versus a CC equipped.

Looking at ( disclaimer : this is for a 2022 Maverick, but that steering wheel looks very similar), it does not appear that the switches would come with their own harnesses.

FWIW my van did not come with SYNC (that I know of)

What's the word, man? Did it work for you?

Sorry, got busy with other things and haven't had a chance to go dig into things. Will try this week.

  • Activating Cruise Control On A Mk7 Transit

We can add & remove various 'Options' within the Mk7 Transit.

We have decoded most of the coding within the BCM. So we can add in options such as Vehicle at Speed locking. So the doors will all lock once the vehicle is moving. One of the most popular modifications we can do to your van is add in Cruise Control. This can be coded relatively easily. All you need to do is ensure you have the correct steering wheel fitted and the correct level BCM. These can both be purchased second hand or the like.

20151024_223010

The body control unit to be a high specification unit requires a 'C' to be second from last at end of the part number, if yours has a B or an A in the second from last digit"****-******-BK" then it's likely not possible to add in the coding. It's likely also not to have the wiring installed to the squib behind the steering wheel. That said, all of these can be added in easily enough. Why shouldn't we all have Cruise Control.

Another piece of coding we can get up to, is adding in the rear speakers to your radio. Most of our vehicles only have the front speakers coded in. IE when you press 'Fade/Balance' it will only show front. It you are adding in some rear speakers due to a camper conversion or a second row of seats the rear speakers won't work. We can code the vehicle so that it will just come to life, the more speakers the merrier, right?!

20151024_223033

We can of course add or remove many things, speed limiters can be removed, applied, increased or lowered! Sometimes you may want to add an OEM feature, or maybe a passengers airbag or automatic lights, maybe even a rain sensor, we can code them in properly as the manufacturer would. Some of the things we can code in on the Transit/Ford accordingly:

  • Outlet 12v in the luggage compartment
  • Speed Limiter
  • Alternator Current & Battery Type (Twin)
  • Battery saver time adjustment
  • Air Conditioning
  • Cluster Level
  • Cruise Control
  • Airbags Present (passenger, and or driver)
  • Engine Type Adjustment
  • Fuel tank volume
  • Language change for instruments & radio
  • Navigation system
  • Reverse sensors / Chime
  • Rain Sensor
  • Tachograph activation / removal
  • Speed warning alert
  • Shift indicator
  • Trip Computer
  • Voice Control
  • Trailer module
  • Tyre circumference

We can perform diagnostics of course on your vehicle, not to mention a decent quality Remap on your vehicle at the same time! 😉

Cruise control is a very useful product for driver comfort and safety of the vehicle and passengers. Not only is the system a cruise control (holds any speed at the touch of a button), it is also a driver-set speed limiter (driver chooses a maximum speed according to the road conditions - the vehicle can be driven at any speed under the set speed) and a top-end speed limiter (top speed limit is set upon installation and prevents the vehicle from being driven above that speed); In our view, everyone should have one. So the next question is ""how do you go about purchasing and installing one?"" Conrad Anderson offer installation by our approved 3rd party installer. Generally cruise controls take around 2-3 hours to install depending on the vehicle make, model and year. Some vehicles can take longer depending on the physical & electronic accessibility. In the box Cruise control computer - preprogrammed for your vehicle Computer wiring loom - for power and vehicle speed pulse, brake switch, clutch switch or CANBUS connection. T-Harness - plug in connection to the throttle pedal Command module - GC3 standard stalk, with option at purchase to have GC4 or GC5 Cruise control safety features:

  • Cruise control must detect resistance across the brake circuit before operation can commence - if the brake lights or brake switch is faulty the cruise will not work.
  • If the the speed increases or decreases more than 15% of the set speed during operation the cruise control will automatically deactivate e.g. If driving up a steep hill and the vehicle cannot maintain the set speed in the current gear.
  • The throttle pedal connection only affects the working of the vehicle when the cruise control power is turned on. When the cruise control is turned off the pedal signals are unchanged allowing the throttle pedal to operate normally.
  • Deactivation when brake is applied.
  • Deactivation when clutch is applied.

General installation process - for Ford Transit Custom 2016>

The access required is under the dashboard and the steering column -  remove the knee-trim and the steering column cowling. Use soldered joints for the +ve and CANBUS connections. These are found in the OBD or Data link connector. Unplug the the throttle pedal connector and place the T-harness inline. Connect the other end to the cruise computer. Install the command module to the steering column cowling - make sure you mark where the best position is before the trim is removed. Run the cabling and connect into the main computer loom. The setup procedure is very simple - does not require any extra equipment and takes around 10-20 minutes. The information to communicate with the vehicle is preinstalled by Conrad anderson so all that is required is to allow the vehicle to access the information. Take the vehicle on a short drive and use the cruise to make sure it is working correctly. Some modified body or high payload vehicles may require some adjustment to make sure the speed is kept constant and the acceleration rate suitable. Command module functions

GC3 is the basic stalk included in the product price. This includes all the basic functions Set current speed Increase and decrease speed Coast - deactivates cruise (brake and clutch pedal will do the same) Resume - re activates the cruise at the previous speed The alternative command modules include all of these functions with additional preset speed memory buttons. These speeds can be changed at any time but are non-volatile, so they remain set even after the ignition is turned off. GC4 - 2 preset memories GC5 - 3 preset memories (new design) Command module installation

The stalk command modules are bolted to the steering column cowling with the wiring running through the centre of the hollow mounting bolt to the main computer wiring loom. The wires are supplied non-terminated to allow them to be run through the drilled cowling, the connector is then connected to the pre-pinned cables. Care must be taken to mount the module in a location with enough space to the rear of the cowling for the securing nut and flanged washer, the final position of the stalk is adjustable using the integral ball joint.

Troubleshooting: The diagnostic procedure will identify the most common issues , if the cruise does not activate do this first.

  • Command module won't light up - check power supply, main fuse
  • Cruise control won't activate - module indicator light does not change from green to red - check the brake connection using diagnostic mode.
  • Check the brake lights are operational. This is one of the cruise control safety features - must detect resistance across the brake circuit.

If you have any difficulties with your cruise control installation please contact the technical support team on 08002790085 Will aftermarket cruise control affect my vehicle warranty? No. Conrad Anderson supply and install cruise controls for most of the main dealerships in the UK, covering the vast majority of the vehicle manufacturers. We recommend that the installation is completed by an auto electrician just to put the installation beyond question. Any issue which is believed to be linked to the cruise control installation can be proved one way or the other by removing the fuse from the main cruise computer wiring loom and removing the T-Harness from the pedal.

Tools required for installation Soldering iron & Solder Multimeters Side cutters Wire strippers Specialist torx and other bits usually required to remove vehicle trim. Knife General screwdrivers and spanners Work lamp

Skills required Installing a cruise control is very similar to installing a vehicle alarm system. See  the general installation process above for an idea of what is involved - the main requirements are:

  • Remove & Refit vehicle trim
  • Soldering electrical joints
  • Basic 12v electrics - Using voltage meters to locate 12v switching wires
  • Routing cables away from moving parts

Vehicle Changeover year Vehicles manufactured or registered around a changeover year will need to be looked at in detail to make sure the correct version of the cruise control is selected. If your vehicle is 2007 and listed in our website product description  as 2007-2011, there could be a difference in the specification - this could be down to the following possibilities:     A 2007 registered vehicle could be a 2006 (or earlier) build year.     Vehicle manufacturers sometimes use 'hybrid' throttle pedal solutions between model changes, the vehicle may look the same but have different throttle pedal connections.      To check which cruise control is correct look at the throttle pedal connection on the vehicle and compare it with the T-Harness connections on the product photo above.

As I have been doing a few long road-trips recently, not having cruise control has become a problem. In the US I think it's only the launch edition that doesn't have cruise control, but I know it's more in Europe. I know it's possible to retrofit cruise control onto our cars, but I haven't found any complete guides on all of the steps required to do it. If anyone has done this to their car or knows of a guide walking through the steps required, it would be very helpful if you could post below.

I also need help, I bought Part No. 5G0.959.442.Q and haven't been able to make it work.

Hello - having read this thread I came across this from BRISKODA (see post #51 for pictures): http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/288726-retrofitting-cruise-control/page-2 Turns out Skoda will retrofit cruise at the dealership, so I called my local VW dealer and it turns out they will do the same. Take a look at the table of options for Golf 7 cruise here: https://www.volkswagenbutikken.no/w...orensoDocuments/GRA_overview_01032013_pdf.pdf My dealer has ordered 5G0054691B as I have a DSG without MF wheel ("S" spec in UK). It's going to be £265 fitted. The Skoda cruise (above) does not seem to have the "Speed Limiter" function but the Volkswagen stalk/MF wheel does! Hope that helps guys! Getting it installed tomorrow so will post pictures if I remember!

Retrofit Transit Cruise Control By Post ?

A new addition to the arsenal of things you can do to your Ford Transit by sending vantuner one of Your vans ECU’s is adding factory cruise control. Send in your BCM ( Body Control Module) & cruise can be activated or anti hijack locking turned off or axle ratio changed etc etc..  You need the right BCM & wiring to start with If its a MK7 Transit  ( it varies from van to van ) , but all Euro 5 Custom & MK8 can be done irrespective of what BCM it has so check out the main cruise control page here  & run through the checklist..

Fiesta Mk7 - Retro Fit "cruise Control"

I've just been reading one of the 'ads' at the top of the forum page which offers the 'retro-fitting' of cruise control. The company concerned is Carfi at www.carfi.co.uk and, what I would like to know is, it is obviously preferrable to have cruise control 'factory fitted' but have any Fiesta Mk7 owners actually had this done and, was it fitted ok and does it perform well?

My Fiesta 1.25 Zetec was manufactured as a 2011 model in September 2010, would it even be possible to fit cruise control to a Fiesta with a 1.25 engine? Also, is it likely that the wiring looms for the cruise control are already where they need to be in the car and, if so, then apart from the right-hand 'cruise control stalk' being fitted, what else needs to be fitted/done so that the cruise control would perform just as if it were factory fitted?

Thanks, BHeart

It's already been discussed on the forum here . I have got as far as fitting the steering wheels controls and had a mechanic hook up his laptop with Ford IDS software but alas there was not option to activate it Also written to Ford Technical who would not assist. Thanks for your reply.

So it seems that it's not at all possible then?

From your experience when trying to get it fitted, was the wiring already in place and, other that the 'steering controls', did you have to have anything else fitted?

The company listed, carfi.co.uk, actually list the Fiesta Mk7 as a model that it could be fitted to?

I have no doubt carfi can do it for you - but they are installing a totally new system (AP300, AP500, AP800, AP900)

I am trying to get the official Ford system working that comes as standard on a Titanium - would not pay £550 for the system above!

I have taken the steering wheel controls and wiring loom from a Titanium but I have no idea what else is required - no dealers or Ford are willing to assist. Someone who claims to have had it done (and uses it) on another forum just seems to be a wind up as they won't say where they got it done. (See: here )

For this project i bought a Titanium under dash wiring loom

med_gallery_13241_370_8163.jpg

So now i need find it out how the wires goes from the cruise control, and of course for the electric folding mirrors :D

Just need some days :(

Like

Nath - has that guy stumped up the facts yet?

I keep meaning to get in touch with you about your progress, now I know in quite depressed :(

Mike - nah, think he's a wind up merchant :(

  • 3 weeks later...

Not a good news :(

I checked the cruse control wiring... I have not a cruse control on my car, but the wiring is there until the air bag rotary thing

i bought the silver wheel cover with the cruse control switch and the wire to the rotary thing...

After every thing connected and back to the place, nothing happened, when i turn the lights on the cruse control switch light up as the radio control, but not working :(

i asked the Ford to add the cruise control to my car, but they said: unfortunately not possible. The control computer (ECU is one) can be programmed once and can not be overwritten.

I hope they was wrong, i do not think it is true...

I`ll not give up! i need it

You're still at the same stage as me then - got a pretty button on your steering wheel that lights up :)

I like mine now as it's more symmetrical :)

kevin lancelott

kevin lancelott

I was using cruise control tonight on my way home from work.Sorry just thought I would rub it in for you. :P

iNath you right! Look better symmetrical :D

Kevin, no worry's i use manual cruise control on my :D stand my feet on the side wall

I find this LINK

but i do not like that stick!

That's for the US Fiesta though - not sure it would fit and don't want another stick like you said!

2014 Mk7 Golf Cruise Control Retrofit Issues

  • Thread starter GeoDCS

Verified VCDS User

Hi all, We do a lot of cruise control retrofitting but yesterday was our first attempt at a Mk7 Golf. All went smoothly until the activation stage. I followed the guide on the wiki which was basically the same as lots of other models but ended up with no cruise working and a fault code in 01 Engine. I suspect the issue is something to do with regular CC vs ACC . All feedback appreciated. Hi Don, No problem at all. It's always good to start with the basics! Yes I fitted the additional wire from the steering wheel controller pin 5 to the engine ECU pin 46. George

Hi Don, Thanks for the helpful reply. The kit we got from VW has the cruise buttons on the indicator stalk. Where are they on your car (which presumably has a factory fitted setup)? I haven't tried any other coding options in 16 steering wheel controller (didn't even occur to me to try) but I will certainly give it a go. George

Ok so just to follow up on this. We got the car back in this morning and tried every possible combination of coding without success. So in the end I had to admit defeat and undo the retrofit.

GeoDCS: as you have been through quite a bit of these retrofits: Does the 8v/ MQB A3 behave the same as this MK7 Golf? I want to retrofit CCS to my own car, but I don't know if me, myself and VCDS would be successful. Do I need the dealer's help with connecting the car to have SVM performed? Can I perform the retrofit entirely on my own?

Hello guys, Golf MK7, same problem with the fault code on engine regarding coding of ECU in powertrain data bus after retrofitting CCS . Engine code is CRBC, pinout conected from steering wheel controler pin 5 to engine controler pin 46 for this engine ECU . All coding done like in the ross tech wiki page. I will post an autoscan later on. Any ideas someone? GeoDCS have you sorted out in the end? Kind regards

Thank you for your reply. CCS in this case is MFSW based, not on turning stalk. Main difference in this is the coding for steering wheel module that i have sorted out it should be CCS not installed. The engine for that guide is gasoline 1.2 tsi that involves replacing accelerator pedal. For 2.0 cr CRBC engine is this necesary to? I want to mention that the speed limiter function is functioning properly but the cruise control function icon appears with the “attention” mark on the display and it does not function at all.

Got it now. Is the swap code universal valid or do we have to buy a retrofit kit from the dealer to have this swap code. Meaning, can the dealer use any swap code from any retrofitting kit to enable this function?

golfi_vend said: As the document included with my cruise kit contained random numbers and letters, I only guess it's specific and 1 time usable, then tied to car VIN. PS! After FEC was implemented, PR code also changed when viewing VIN in PL24 . Retrofitting Cruise Control - MK7.5

hallum

  • Add to quote

Hi guys, I wanted to introduce having recently purchased a Fiesta ST-1 just over a week ago. It's a 2014 in Frozen White with just over 20,000 miles on it. The car is pretty standard, with the style pack being the only upgrade I have noticed that has been fitted. I'm really happy with the car so far and am having a lot of fun in it. One thing I would like to fit in the car is cruise control, as I do a lot of motorway driving. I've done quite a lot of reading across different forums and sites around the topic, but can't find a definite answer on whether it's possible to retrofit cruise control on the MK7.5 as it seems to be on the MK7. From what I have read, the issue is being able to activate the feature. Has anyone been able to do this, or advise if it is possible or not? I am keen to buy the parts in (I have sourced the replacement silver fascia with switches), but would rather not only to find out it can't be done. Thanks, Harry

All Fiesta STs are MK 7.5 as the ST came in along with the facelift to the rest of the Fiesta line-up. I retrofitted cruise control on my ST-2, and activating it is no real issue - a laptop, ForScan software and a modified ELM module is all you need. The instructions I successfully followed are here: http://www.fiestastoc.com/forums/topic/212906-st-2-cruise-control-retrofit-success/page-10 You'll need to be a paid up member to view, but considering the various discount codes you also get access to, membership pays itself back!

Great, thanks, guys. I will give it a go.

Yes the loom is correct. The white plug on your current wheel will be the same, it just wont have as many wires coming from it

Have you got the buttons with the m in the middle of the volume buttons or with the voice icon the m button is no good you need the one with the voice icon

Got the steering wheel in the post yesterday, and so had a look at getting the switches fitted this evening. I removed the top and bottom trims for the steering column to get access to the 2 holes on the back of the steering wheel to remove the airbag. I tried using a flat head screwdriver to press the black airbag clips in toward the centre of the wheel, whilst pulling quite firmly on the airbag but it wouldn't show any sign of budging. I've read quite a few articles on removing it this way but had no luck. I don't really want to pierce holes in the wheel to use to use the other airbag extraction method. Anyone got any tips/tricks on how you removed it?

Who are you?

I’m Nath. IT Professional, self-proclaimed geek & Ford enthusiast.

What do you do?

Many things, but if you’re reading this page you’re probably more interested in the cruise control I can retrofit to certain Fiestas.

Can I have cruise control?

Well that depends, you have to answer 1 very simple question, and 1 not so simple question.

Question #1

Do you have a 2008-2012 Fiesta commonly referred to as MK7 or pre-facelift? They look a bit like the one on the left:

If yes continue on to Question #2.

Question #2

Do you have a white and green/brown wire inside your steering column? It’s as easy as removing 3 screws and 2 bits of plastic to check, click here for the instructions.

But I have a 2012+ MK7.5/facelift model – why can’t I have cruise control?

Ford changed the way the ECU is programmed and unfortunately that stops me accessing the area I need to modify to activate cruise control. There are stories online of MK7.5 owners successfully retrofitting cruise control by a helpful dealership.

I’ve got the 2 wires on a MK7 Fiesta – what else do I need?

You’re going to need some parts. These include: the silver ‘V’ trim on your steering wheel, the radio & cruise buttons, and the wires that links them together. Ford won’t sell those parts individually, only as a complete wheel (last time I checked it was several hundred pounds) so your best bet is to get the steering wheel from a Titanium model from a breakers yard (that’s the only UK model that came with cruise control as standard).

Please note that it’s really important that the wires be in one piece for everything to work. Sounds obvious when you say it but if you’re buying online always message the seller first to confirm. I have seen some in the past from heavy handed breakers who ripped them apart when taking out the airbag. Here’s a photo showing the important parts. Make sure the white plug, 2 spades and metal O ring as all firmly attached. A good target price is around £50. If you get really stuck trying to find one, ask me and I’ll do my best. I recharge part at cost + 10%.

And how much is all this going to cost me?

There’s 2 options depending on where you are, geographically speaking.

Option #1 – Lets Meet

I’m in Milton Keynes and can visit you if you’re within 20 miles of here (MK, Northampton, Bedford, Luton, Aylesbury). Of course you’re more than welcome to come and see me in sunny* MK.

*may not actually be sunny during your visit.

For me to complete a full installation (removal of airbag & steering wheel trim, installation of new trim with radio & cruise control buttons, reinstall airbag), reprogram the ECU to activate cruise control, all whilst making pleasant small talk you’re looking at £100.

If you know a super-dooper mechanic or feel you can complete the installation yourself and just need me to perform the activation with my IT wizardry, it’s £50. Remember though, airbags are dangerous and only attempt this if you know what you’re doing.

Option #2 – Install/Activation by a Local Mechanic

If you’re too far from Milton Keynes, are good friends with a mechanic, or just can’t face seeing me don’t worry, I don’t hold a grudge. As long as you know someone with the Ford IDS software and VCM cable they should be able to perform the activation for you with a little guidance from yours truly. You may be asking what they would need my help for. Well you see, Ford very kindly disabled the option of enabling cruise control through their official diagnostic software. You can see the option but it’s greyed out. This is where my IT skills come in and by following my simple instructions along with an activation file you purchase from me for the very reasonable price of £25, your mechanic should be able to perform the same magic as me and get cruise control activated.

Click here if you’d like to purchase a file for your vehicle.

And how long is all this going to take?

Approximately 45-60 minutes.

When can you do it?

Usually weekends, contact me to check availability.

I have more questions!

No problem, just drop me an email and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

mk7 transit cruise control retrofit

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

mk7 transit cruise control retrofit

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

mk7 transit cruise control retrofit

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Buses, Streetcars, and Trolleybuses

Moscow's public land transport network covers the entirety of the city: buses and streetcars arrive with the same frequency as metro trains, and many routes connect the city's center and its outskirts. A system of night buses operates daily between 12:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., running from the Kitay-Gorod metro station on thirteen routes to various Moscow districts (as well as to Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports). There is also a tourist trolleybus route from Komsomolskaya Square to Novoryazanskaya Street. You can pay for public land transport rides with the Troika card or buy a ticket directly from the driver. For an easier way to plan out your route and find out the timetable, use the Moscow Transport app or mobile maps.

River Transport

The navigation season on the Moskva River begins in mid-April and ends in late fall. Throughout this period, you can see motorships running along the river. Almost any route is suitable for a cruise, with the ships circling around the city center and going to the North River Terminal and the Kolomenskoye Park embankment. It is best to book tours in advance (there are several different companies to choose from). Payment options depend on the type of the tour.

There is only one regular river route in Moscow, and it goes from the North River Terminal to Khimki. The ticket price is 350 rubles, but in the morning and evening hours you can pay with a Troika card at the standard fare.

Commuter Trains

Trains run in eleven directions from nine Moscow railway stations. Most often, commuter trains are used to travel out of town or to dachas, but they also serve to connect certain districts and metro stations, as well as help prevent the metro from overcrowding during rush hours. High-speed trains, also known as Aeroexpress trains, connect Moscow airports with the city center. You can find diagrams of the railway lines on the website of the Central Suburban Passenger Company. Although normal rail tickets can only be purchased at the box office, you can buy Aeroexpress tickets in advance on the website or using the mobile app.
