Building a cruise ship is just like completing any other large and momentous task: You do it piece by piece, bit by bit. Gizmodo recently posted a time-lapse video of the mesmerizing construction process, filmed by German video production company MK timelapse . The footage shows cranes and pulleys assembling the AIDAprima —the new flagship of German cruise line AIDA Cruises—at the Mitsubishi shipyard in Nagasaki, Japan.

The 124,500 gross ton vessel was finally completed  in early 2016, and hit the open sea in April. Today, it carries 3300 passengers and 900 crew members. Watch the AIDAprima slowly transform from an empty metal shell into a grand, $645 million ocean liner as the months fly by in the video above.

VIDEO: P&O Cruises Iona timelapse

CruiseMapper logo

P&O Cruises released a timelapse video showing its largest-ever cruise ship being built.

Viewers can see the 2-year build process for the US$ 950 million (GBP 733 million) new ship , Iona , speeded-up into the footage captured at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany .

Iona, which is also the biggest-ever ship built for the UK market, was handed over to P&O at an official ceremony earlier this month. With GT tonnage 185,000 tons, the 345 m (1131 ft) long vessel has 19 decks (11 with passenger staterooms ) and max capacity 6600 (5200 lower berths).

Described by the company as its 'greenest, largest and most innovative ship yet', Iona has a 3-deck atrium at her heart and a glass-roofed 'SkyDome' by Martin Frances. Other features include 'a [world-first] gin distillery, exciting new dining, unseen entertainment concepts and unique wellbeing treats'.

MS Iona is the first British LNG-powered (by liquefied natural gas) passenger liner and has a larger capacity than P&O UK's (now 2nd-biggest) vessel mS Britannia , which can accommodate up to 5000 passengers and crew.

P&O Iona ship has a rescheduled maiden season (Northern Europe, Norwegian Fjords, Iberia and the Canaries) from Southampton UK starting in March 2021, after the company has suspended its operations until January 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-related international travel restrictions.

An as-yet-unnamed sistership will be delivered to P&O UK in December 2022.

Princess Cruises officially took ownership of their new Royal-class ship, Enchanted Princess, in September.

p1ejg8g33d2a05jf1tc4269rtm5.002

The vessel is sister to other Royal-class ships Royal, Regal, Majestic, and Sky Princess . It features Sky Suites with the largest balconies at sea, an escape room, Discovery at SEA programming for all ages, an aft pool, and Bistro Sur La Mer — a French specialty restaurant created with Chef Emmanuel Renaut.

Originally scheduled to sail her maiden voyage in early July 2020, construction was delayed due to the global health crisis. Work was able to resume in mid-June, and sea trials were completed in July. The ship was officially delivered to Princess Cruises via a virtual handover ceremony on September 30, 2020.

Enchanted Princess 2 800x450 1

Hotel General Manager Richard Harry said “The set up and delivery of this ship was made that much more personal, due to the limited number of teammates involved and the restrictions imposed at the time. Our product is always evolving, from the stylishly made-over Crooners to upgrades to MedallionClass that will heighten the experience. Plus there’s the return of guest favorites, such as Take Five and Sabatini’s. We can’t wait to welcome our first guests on board and know they will love her as much as we do!”

Enchanted Princess By the Numbers

enchanted princess rendering

  • The ship’s height is taller than 15 stacked double-decker buses.
  • It fills the same space as 309 million magnum bottles of champagne.
  • Enchanted Princess  is longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall.
  • You could stretch the ship’s electrical cables from London, England to Cairo, Egypt (2,725 miles)
  • The amount of paint on the new ship is more than ten times the amount used to repaint the Golden Gate Bridge
  • The ship features 30 times more marble than that in Michelangelo’s David statue.
  • Enchanted Princess’  anchor weighs more than three elephants (15 tons)
  • The vessel is the 100th ship built by Fincantieri shipyard.

Another fun fact: The ship’s captain, Nick Nash, is not only the commander of this new ship, but is also the commodore of Princess’ entire fleet. This means that he’s the “captain of captains” and the highest rank an officer can have in the fleet.

Screen Shot 2020 11 18 at 7.13.16 PM

He joined Princess in 1989 and worked his way up to captain in 2002. Commodore Nash commented, saying “It’s been the highlight of my career to recently take Enchanted Princess out of the shipyard for the very first time to now overseeing all ships of the cruise line.”

From Concept to Creation [VIDEO]

Princess Cruises recently shared a video on its YouTube channel highlighting the construction of  Enchanted Princess:

Though  Enchanted Princess  is ready to sail when it is able, there’s no word on whether it will be one of the first ships that Princess resumes cruising with.

Incredible Time Lapse of a Gargantuan Cruise Ship Being Built from Scratch

Watch the 300-meter-long aidaprima come together like lego.

With a staggering 18 passenger decks, an onboard artificial beach, a "lazy river" ride and the world's longest cruise ship waterslide, the 3,300-passenger AIDAprima is the flagship of AIDA Cruises (a subsidiary of Carnival).

cruise ship being built time lapse

The AIDAprima was constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries at their Koyagi shipyards in Nagasaki, and they left a bunch of 4K cameras rolling from start to finish, capturing "the world's first cinematic quality time lapse film of a full cruise ship build." Check it out:

It didn't all go off without a hitch, however. Edited out of the video is the part where the ship caught fire during the construction.

What was your favorite part of the build? Mine was watching that decorative paint job go on. I reckon when the graphics are that large, there's no need to mask and they can just freehand it.

In the event that this video doesn't do it for you, maybe you'll enjoy seeing How They Saw a 50,000-Ton Cargo Ship Into Slices while it's still underwater.

Fantastic vidéo, of a horrible product. The vertical bow help mitigate the disaster of the gazillion floors ... but the eye painting just ruin this. Mixed feelings.

Awesome video.  Simply amazing that people are able to build such mega-ships.  My favorite parts were when they entombed the engines into the ship and the painting.  Also, so many lights!

A company is turning former cruise ships into floating hotels — see inside its largest 'floatel'

  • Bridgemans ServicesGroup operates a fleet of former cruise ships turned into hotels.
  • Its "floatels" are designed to house workers during long-term projects.
  • See its largest 652-cabin floatel with a game room and buffet.

Insider Today

Some old and unwanted cruise ships meet their demise at ship-breaking yards , where they are disassembled and sold for scrap.

Other vessels find a more fortunate fate, receiving a second chance to do what they already do best: serve as floating hotels.

Canada-based Bridgemans Services Group buys and charters former cruise ships to turn into "floatels," outfitted with standard cruise amenities like daily housekeeping, buffets, and relaxing lounges.

But the ships aren't designed to transport tourists from one destination to another anymore. Instead, companies turn to Bridgeman when they need to house workers for a long-term project, whether it be the construction of an offshore wind farm in Europe or the shooting of a major film in a remote destination.

Floatels can accommodate workers in remote destinations where hotels might not be an option.

In more metropolitan areas, Bridgemans says its ships could lessen the stress an inundation of workers might have on the local housing market.

And once they are no longer needed, the vessels depart and "leave no trace behind," the company said.

Over the last decade, Bridgemans has deployed its ships for 15 projects on every continent, Brian Grange, the company's president, told Business Insider.

cruise ship being built time lapse

Grange said that its deployments — most often for liquified natural gas companies — last for an average of two years.

In the past, it has also provided accommodations for MSC Cruises at its Ocean Cay private island and housing for more than 1,000 workers in the Philippines' on a project for the Manila International Airport during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company's three ships range from 150 to 652 cabins.

cruise ship being built time lapse

The floatel operator acquired its largest ship, the 561-foot-long MV Isabelle X, in 2023.

In its past life, the 35-year-old vessel sailed around the Baltic Sea as one of Estonia-based Tallink Gruipp's cruise ships.

But gone are its days of leisurely cruising. The 35,000 gross-ton ship is now on its first deployment in Howe Sound, just north of Vancouver, where it's housing more than 600 workers who are building Woodfibre LNG's "net zero" LNG export facility.

Isabelle X underwent a six-month retrofit before it was sent to Howe Sound.

cruise ship being built time lapse

The process included updating the ship's cabins and adding amenities like a game room and an 8,000-square-foot gym.

The latter two are especially important: "We need to make sure we delineate between work and home," Grange told BI. "We have to create a social environment on board these vessels that makes it attractive for workforces around the world."

During their free time, workers can play billiards, relax in the outdoor lounge, or use the ship’s WiFi to catch up on social media.

cruise ship being built time lapse

The sports lounge has large television screens, while the games lounge has darts, ping pong tables, and air hockey.

The 'quiet lounges' are the go-to space for people who need to unwind after a long work day.

cruise ship being built time lapse

Or, they could recharge and catch up on the latest shows in their cabins, which all come with desks, storage, and 32-inch televisions.

Like a typical cruise ship, Bridgemans' vessels have buffets with live cooking stations, a dessert bar, and the occasional themed night.

cruise ship being built time lapse

The ships' chefs tailor their menus to the demographic and dietary restrictions of the workers on board, the company's president told BI.

Residents can expect at least four protein options, plenty of veggies, and handmade bread and desserts.

Unlike most cruise lines, Bridgemans can pre-purchase all the food it needs before deployment.

cruise ship being built time lapse

Grange says this allows the ships to maintain food quality and consistency in remote locations.

Remember that deployment in the Philippines during COVID-19? He said the ship had packed almost 800 tons of food ahead of the project.

He wouldn’t disclose the cost to rent one of Bridgemans’ floatels.

cruise ship being built time lapse

But he did note that the cost of a cabin on the Woodfibre LNG project in Howe Sound is comparable to a hotel room in nearby Vancouver, as is the case with most of its projects near major cities.

The company’s most recent acquisition, the 150-cabin Diamond XI, is currently being retrofitted and would be ready for deployment this year.

cruise ship being built time lapse

According to the company's president, the vessel is small and high-end, likely to be used for sporting events and movie shoots.

It could also be the start of a greater expansion: He hopes to add two or three more vessels to its fleet in the next five years.

"The world has opened up to this as a valued alternative to housing," Grange told BI.

cruise ship being built time lapse

Who knows, the next time you see a cruise ship off the coast, there's a slim but possible chance it could be housing workers — not vacationers.
