Spain & Portugal Itinerary: Three Weeks by Public Transportation
Going to Portugal and Spain? Can’t/ don’t want to drive? Our ultimate road trip itinerary by public transport shows you the best of Spain and Portugal.
- We travelled from Madrid to Lisbon in three weeks
- In Spain, we took a high-speed train from Madrid to Seville, and then by bus to Portugal
- We stayed at lovely mid-range hotels and apartments
- Read our full Spain – Portugal itinerary below
Did someone say Eurotrip? Hell yes! We went on our version of an Iberian Eurotrip by bus (and one train) last summer, and our itinerary took us from Spain to Portugal in 21 days. Spain and Portugal were everything we had wished for and more. If you are dreaming of visiting the most beautiful places in Portugal and Spain, want to see some of the most famous landmarks in Europe , and experience vibrant cities, scenic small towns, Atlantic beaches and amazing food and wine, then you can simply copy our itinerary and you are ready to go.
This 3-week road trip itinerary does not have to be undertaken by bus. If you’re driving yourself, simply head to your parking spot instead of the bus station and you’re ready to go. If going by train, you need to be a little creative (and patient) as there are no trains between Seville and Evora. While trains are much more comfortable than buses, taking the bus is quite a bit cheaper than the train.
So enough with the dillydally: Here is our tried-and-tested 3-week itinerary for Spain and Portugal by bus .

3 Weeks Spain & Portugal by Bus Itinerary Map
At first, we only planned for a trip to Portugal. However, we started toying around with the idea of a Spain and Portugal trip when we saw that flights to Madrid are so much cheaper than to Lisbon. And we are so glad we did. Spain turned out to be fantastic and a perfect contrast to Portugal.
We didn’t want to go on a whirlwind tour of Spain and Portugal. Instead, we stayed at least 3 nights in each place, unpacked our suitcase and tried to experience the best of every city. It is a holiday after all.
In the end, we found it the cheapest to fly from Hong Kong to Madrid and return from Lisbon on Qatar Airways.
Distances in Spain and Portugal are short and both countries have an excellent public transportation network. We only took a high-speed train from Madrid to Seville since it gets you there in 2.5 hours as opposed to the 6 hours by bus. From there we used the Spanish bus company, ALSA, to get us to Faro in Portugal. Once in Portugal we exclusively used Rede Expresos for the remaining part of the trip.
Book your bus tickets on Omio , so there is no need to go to the bus terminal before your departure to buy tickets.

3 WEEKS in SPAIN AND PORTUGAL BY BUS ITINERARY: DETAILED BREAKDOWN
3 weeks spain & portugal itinerary: detailed breakdown.
The most difficult choice we had to make on this trip was whether to visit Madrid or Barcelona. After hours on Google, a consultation with a clairvoyant and a flip of a coin, the decision fell on Madrid. And man, how happy are we with that! Madrid is a stunning city and we can definitely see ourselves coming back here.
Book yourself a room at Hostal Met Madrid, just off Plaza Mayor and explore the best of Madrid on foot with our self-guided walking tour .
Top things to do in Madrid
- EAT EAT EAT. Overdose on tapas at Mercado de San Miguel .
- Visit the picturesque Plaza Mayor
- See the stunning, modern interior of the Almudena Cathedral
- Stroll and shop on Gran Via
- Vibes and day drinking in La Latina
- Gorge on chocolate con churros at Chocolatería San Ginés
- Admire Picasso’s Guernica and other modern masterpieces at the Reina Sofia
- Sundowner drinks and Madrid’s best view at Circulo de Bellas Arte
If you have more time in Madrid, perhaps consider taking a day trip to Toledo or visiting one of the incredible museums .
Madrid – Seville: Renfe Train €53.40 2H 30M Take the high-speed Renfe train from Atocha station in Madrid which will whiz you off to Seville at speeds of up to 270 km/h. The landscape from the window is that of 50 Shades of Brown through rolling fields and olive trees.
Arriving in Andalusia’s capital is to arrive at the Spain that we dreamed of seeing. Immediately it feels MUCH hotter, looks more colourful and you can tell that North Africa is just across the horizon.
Check into this apartment , just across the street from the Alcazar and Seville Cathedral, and enjoy knowing that you are in the best location to explore Seville. Then go out and meet Seville: She is sexy and will seduce you in no time! We’ll play matchmaker and introduce her to you with our Seville Guide 🙂
Top things to do in Seville
- Marvel at the Moorish Real Alcazar.
- Admire the mammoth Seville Cathedral, then climb the Giralda Tower for a sweeping view over Seville
- TAPAS! Sangria! Ole!
- Revel in the most authentic flamenco show at Casa Anselma
- Master the art of siesta
- See the striking Plaza de Espana
- Watch the sunset from the Mushrooms
- Take a cooking class inside the Triana Market
Seville-Evora: ALSA & Rede Expresos €37.60 7 hours Adiós Spain, Olá Portugal! Today we take our first bus and cross the border to Portugal. After changing buses in Faro and Albufeira we head inland to Portugal’s Alentejo region. Seville and Evora might look close on the map, but no direct buses are connecting these cities. Read here how to travel by bus between Seville and Evora .
Evora with its small-town charm, excellent food and wine and historic importance is indeed one of Portugal’s gems. Stay at this lovely apartment right in the old town of Evora and prepare to gear down for a few days. Explore Evora’s white and yellow alleys between wine-tasting sessions. Read here about things to do in Evora and why you should not miss it on your Portugal itinerary.
Top things to do in Evora
- Practice your sommelier skills and find your favourite Alentejo red.
- Visit the chilling Chapel of Bones.
- Get lost in the cobbled alleys.
- Stuff yourself with regional food of the Alentejo.
- See the Roman temple of Diana.
- Explore the cork forests of the Alentejo.
Evora – Lisbon : Rede Expresos – 1H 30M Lisbon, Lisbon…where do we even start? Portugal’s colourful capital wasted no time in becoming one of our favourite cities ever.
She is sexy and easy to love. We are staying for 5 nights, so we settle in and make ourselves at home. Our apartment has a washing machine, so after the laundry has been done and the fridge has been stocked with food and wine, we are ready to explore Lisbon.
We like how Lisbon is so cool, without trying. Talking about cool, here is our cool-without-trying itinerary for 4 days in Lisbon .
Get yourself a Lisboa card and enjoy Lisbon over the next few days. Make sure to visit the fairy-tale palaces and gardens of Sintra on a day trip .
Top things to do in Lisbon
- Ride the trams up and down Lisbon’s 7 hills.
- Find the best view from the numerous miradouros.
- Explore beautiful Belem.
- Bask in the cool vibes at LX Factory.
- Pastel de Nata!
- Have to best seafood at Cervejaria Ramiros (Anthony Bourdain approved).
- Shop for treasure at the Thieves Market.
- Take a day trip to Sintra.
- Sail along the Tagus River at sunset
Lisbon – Nazare : Rede Expresos €11.40 1H 50M If you are a surfer you probably had wet dreams of Nazare before. If you’re not a surfer, you should still go check out this legendary surf town in central Portugal. After two weeks of active sightseeing, you deserve a few days of long walks on the beach, refreshing dips in the Atlantic and even more fresh seafood. It’s one hell of a charming seaside town !
Tipping Point guest house in Sitio, near Praia do Norte, is where you want to be. You might come here for the waves, but you’ll definitely want to stay for the breakfast. If you’re in luck your stay will coincide with the swell, and there is no better place to see the power of the Atlantic than in Nazare. Some of these waves can reach a height of up to 30 meters!
Top things to do in Nazare
- Stand in awe of the crashing waves at the Nazare lighthouse.
- Feel the wind on your face and salt in your hair on the wide, empty Praia do Norte.
- Ride the funicular between Sitio and Nazare.
- Eat fresh barnacles and wash them down with beer.
- Take a surf lesson.
- Rent a little beach cabana for the day.
- Take refreshing dips in the Atlantic after roasting in the sun.
Nazare – Porto : Rede Expresos €16.10 3H 30M Porto is without a doubt one of the coolest cities we have ever visited. This stunning city is probably our favourite of all the places we visited on this trip. Home to the world-famous port wines, Porto has so much more to offer than just fortified wine. You’re guaranteed to have a good time in Porto with its joyous vibes and stunning scenery. Read our Porto guide to experience the best the city has to offer.
Base yourself at Porto.arte apartments and explore Porto on foot. It’s a small city not overrun with tourists and is perfect for walking.
Top things to do in Porto
- Go on a port cellar tour and wine tasting in Gaia
- Admire Porto’s vibrant street art
- Eat a franscesinha
- Seek out Porto’s brilliant azulejo-covered buildings
- Walk across the imposing Dom Louis bridge
- Watch the sunset from Serra do Pilar or Jardim de Morro
- Take a day trip to the stunning Douro Valley
Porto – Lisbon : Rede Expresos €19 3H 50M Our flight home leaves from Lisbon, but Porto has an international airport so see if you can get a flight home from here if you don’t want to backtrack to Lisbon.
We stay at 4U Lisbon IV Guesthouse near the airport since we have an early morning flight the next day.
On our last day in Lisbon, we revisit a few of our favourite spots, eat pastel de nata like it’s the end of the world, drown our sorrows at Wines of Portugal in Praça do Comércio and have a last supper at Cervejaria Ramiros.
What Will We Change If We Do Spain & Portugal Again?
We are pretty chuffed with our itinerary and we feel that we saw everything we wanted within our time frame. Dare we say it’s a perfect itinerary? With more time, we would probably spend an extra day or two in Madrid to take a day trip to Toledo .
With less time…we really don’t know which place we’ll cull since they are fantastic. We will probably shave a day off Evora, Lisbon and Nazare and get a flight home from Porto instead of returning to Lisbon. Tough choice to make.

How Much Did Our Three Weeks in Spain & Portugal Cost?
Do you need to sell a kidney? That’s always the first thing that flashes through our minds when planning a trip to Europe. While Spain and Portugal are surely not cheap destinations, we returned home with all our organs in place. We expected Portugal to be a lot cheaper than Spain, but in the end, there was no real difference between the two. So how much does it cost to travel to Spain and Portugal for 3 weeks?
Jin, our minister of finance and number crunching, held meticulous records of all our spending. We spent an average of US $92.85 per person per day. We stayed at ensuite double rooms in Madrid and Nazare while at apartments in Seville, Evora, Lisbon and Porto. When we go on holiday we go all out and honestly don’t hold back – it is a holiday after all. We ate and drank like glitterati.
Our budget includes all transportation in Spain and Portugal, all accommodation, entrance fees, food and drink and shopping. Not included are flights to and from Europe, travel insurance and the cost of the Schengen visa for De Wet. (Count yourself lucky if you won the nationality lottery – you will never know the bureaucratic ballache of obtaining a Schengen visa).
Aaaaand that’s how you really travel Spain and Portugal by public transport. Any questions or suggestions on our itinerary? Let us know in the comments below. ✌️

Fado: the perfect blend of voice and guitar. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Patrimony, as a celebrated form of world music that captures what it is to be Portuguese. The word Fado comes from the Latin word fatum, which means fate or destiny. It is a style of music that is all about deep feelings: the disappointments of love, the ups and downs of life. No one knows quite how Fado first came into being, but to this day, Portugal's traditional music remains at the very heart of the country's culture. In one of Lisbon’s most popular Fado restaurants, professional performers entertain you while you enjoy a typical Portuguese three-course dinner with wine included.

Travel Documents
If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey to enter Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar (a territory of the United Kingdom). You are not required to obtain a visa to enter either country for the short duration of this tour. Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.
If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom (for Gibraltar) to determine what travel documentation is required.
We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.
To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.
TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.
*Extreme Circumstances: In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.
Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.
- Trip Cancellation – If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. - Trip Interruption – If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
- Travel Delay – Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
- Medical Expense – Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
- Baggage / Personal Effects Protection – Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
- Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services – Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.
The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559 per person
This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.
This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.
The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

Travel Requirements For This Tour
Air Information and Luggage Restrictions
AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.
TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.
AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.
Checked Luggage – General
Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).
Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.
Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.
Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.
Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.
For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.
Health, Safety and Mobility
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.
Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.
If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.
VACCINATIONS
If you are a resident of the U.S. , no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Spain, Portugal or Gibraltar (a territory of the United Kingdom). For complete vaccination and inoculation information, please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .
If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries visited on this tour to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.
SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS
The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.
The tour is fast paced. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. Spain and Portugal are home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, many dating from ancient or medieval times. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture may present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. We conduct walking tours in most of the cities visited.
Many of the hotels do not provide for disabled access. Although all the hotels on this itinerary have elevators, many of the sites visited do not. Airports and train stations provide limited access to elevators. Many of the museums will have elevators; however, they are not always conveniently located for your use. Further, ramps are not commonly found in public venues.
PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.
Reading List
We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!
You can view the reading list here.
The climate of Porto in spring and summer temperatures range from 50-80° F (10-25° C) and above, and most days are sunny. The climate of Southern Spain & Madrid is sunny and dry, and warm for much of the year. Summer days can be extremely hot, often reaching 85ºF (30ºC) and above, but evenings and nights cool down considerably.

What To Pack
Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .
Spain and Portugal are generally warm and dry from April through September. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.
In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable.
You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are not usually available, so guests may have to give their garment to the hotel to be ironed for a fee. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee.
We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.
Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Spain and Portugal:
- Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
- An optional jacket and tie for men
- Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
- A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
- Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
- Insect repellent
- Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
- Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
- Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
- Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
- Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
- Daypack for camera equipment
- Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
- Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Tour Year 2024
Tour itinerary.
DAY 1 - Overnight Flight to Europe.
The Trip Documents will provide guidance for airport check-in. Relax on your transatlantic flight with the assurance that Image Tours has taken care of all the details.
DAY 2 - PORTUGAL . . Arrival at Lisbon Airport.
Upon arrival, clear passport control and collect your luggage. Refer to the “Arrival Instructions” in the Trip Documents for directions on where and when to meet your tour manager. Transfer to your Lisbon hotel to check in and freshen up. An afternoon walk is an excellent way to form first impressions of this vibrant city with its pastel-colored houses, brightly-painted boats, broad boulevards and mosaic sidewalks. This evening, meet your fellow tour members during the “Welcome to Europe” dinner. (Dinner)
DAY 3 - PORTUGAL . . Lisbon.
This morning, get to know Lisbon during the city tour. Highlights include Belem Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries honoring Prince Henry the Navigator. A great way to spend your afternoon is to ride a street car up to São Jorge Castle and to walk the narrow, winding alleys of the Moorish Alfama District. The alluring shops offer fine Portuguese products such as hand painted ceramic tiles, pottery and figurines. Another consideration is to join the optional Cascais & Cape Roca excursion (see Optional Excursions). Return to your Lisbon hotel for an included dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)
DAY 4 - PORTUGAL . . Algarve Region & SPAIN . . Seville.
During your travels today, keep in mind that more than fifty percent of the world’s cork is supplied by Portugal’s forests. Cross the Sado River at Alcácer do Sal and make a mid-day stop in the Algarve Region. Continue through southwestern Spain, also known as Andalusia, and travel through the province of Huelva. It is from the nearby port of Palos de la Frontera that Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas in 1492. Your hotel for the next two nights is located in Seville, one of the largest historic Old Towns of Europe. (Breakfast, Dinner)
DAY 5 - SPAIN . . Seville.
During the city tour of Seville, a local guide will introduce you to the Plaza de España, the cathedral housing Columbus’ tomb, Giralda Tower, City Hall, and the tobacco factory of “Carmen” fame. The afternoon allows time to pursue your personal interests. Explore the Alcazar Palace (approximately €10), the Flamenco Museum (approximately €10), or the intriguing alleys and courtyards in the former Jewish Quarter of Barrio de Santa Cruz. Seville’s gardens provide a lovely setting for a picnic lunch. Of particular beauty is the Maria Luisa Park on the Guadalquivir River banks. The friendly neighborhoods and lively cafés of this delightful city invite people to relax and socialize outdoors well into the evening. Tonight, dinner is on your own to experience the regional specialties, or join the optional Flamenco Show with Tapas excursion (see Optional Excursions). (Breakfast)
DAY 6 - SPAIN . . Ronda - Costa del Sol.
Wind your way past thrilling mountain vistas to Ronda, a village whose unique location creates dramatic views over the Tajo Ravine. After an independent lunch, a local guide will share the history of this special place and point out photo opportunities. Today’s final destination is Spain’s Sun Coast, the Costa del Sol, in the province of Malaga. Your seaside resort, in the town of Torremolinos, awaits you with an included dinner upon arrival. (Breakfast, Dinner)
DAY 7 - SPAIN . . Costa del Sol.
Spend the first day of a five-night stay becoming familiar with your Andalusian paradise along the Mediterranean coast. If you join the optional morning Malaga excursion (see Optional Excursions), a local guide will introduce you to the port, castle and city center of the provincial capital, concluding with a tasting of the regional wine. For those desiring additional exploration of the Andalusian countryside, your tour manager will also offer an evening optional Mijas & Country Dinner excursion (see Optional Excursions). (Breakfast)
DAY 8 - SPAIN . . Granada - Costa del Sol.
This day focuses on the city of Granada, elegantly enrobed by the surrounding Sierra Navada mountains and crowned by the astounding Alhambra. In Arabic, Alhambra means “Red Castle.” Granada’s Alhambra was in fact a fortified compound, complete with protective walls, lookout towers, two palaces, a garden, and a village for the families of the nobles. Your local guide will share the fascinating stories of this area and reveal the history leading to the interwoven Arabic and Christian influences. After exploring the center of Granada, return to your Torremolinos hotel for an included dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)
DAY 9 - SPAIN . . Costa del Sol.
A day for relaxation! Walk the beach, swim in the Mediterranean, or lounge at the hotel pool. The airy boutiques along the winding streets leading up to the hilltop village are a shopper’s paradise, selling Mallorca pearls, gold jewelry, cork products and Lladro figurines. Other options include the Botanical Gardens, Butterfly Park and Aquarium. Or perhaps, prior to tour departure, you reserved a full-day optional Morocco excursion for this day (Note: Due to the uncertainty of availability and pricing for your departure, the most current information on independent Morocco excursion providers will be included in the Trip Documents.) For your independent lunch or dinner in Torremolinos, numerous sidewalk cafés offer fresh seafood, paella and tapas. (Breakfast)
DAY 10 - SPAIN . . Costa del Sol.
Enjoy another full day at your resort location along the Mediterranean Coast, with options for swimming, sunbathing, shopping, sampling local cuisine, and exploring one of the neighboring towns. Or, join the full day optional Gibraltar excursion (see Optional Excursions) to visit the caves and meet the Barbary Apes on “The Rock” in the British Overseas Territory. After an included dinner, celebrate your last evening in Torremolinos with tranquil views from the hotel’s rooftop bar or amid the festive atmosphere of the beach boulevard. (Breakfast, Dinner)
DAY 11 - SPAIN . . Córdoba - Baeza.
Travel to Córdoba, where a local guide will explain the cultural landmarks, including the Old Jewish Quarter, La Mezquita (built as an immense mosque in the eighth century and currently used as a cathedral), Viana Palace and the Roman bridge. Take a stroll through the Old Town where splashing fountains decorate the patios and floral aromas fill the air. Depart Córdoba to travel among the infinite olive groves and rolling mountains of Jaén Province. You will overnight in Baeza, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The town is situated on a hill, and a small open-top tram will take you up to the hotel. (Breakfast, Dinner)
DAY 12 - SPAIN . . La Mancha - Madrid.
After learning more about this region during a morning tour at the Museum of Olive Tree Culture, head north through the region of La Mancha, the Arabic name for “parched earth.” Along the way, catch a glimpse of the windmills made famous by Cervantes’ story of Don Quixote. Ahead lies the fascinating city of Madrid, Spain’s modern capital and your final tour destination. Visit the Prado Art Museum with commentary from a local guide before transferring to your Madrid hotel for check-in and dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)
DAY 13 - SPAIN . . Madrid.
You have a full day in Madrid to pursue your personal interests. Those who prefer more structured sightseeing might consider joining the local guide for an optional Madrid Royal Palace excursion (see Optional Excursions). Three popular choices for your afternoon exploration are the Old Town of Madrid (referred to as Puerta del Sol), EI Retiro Park (where you can rent a row boat on its Great Lake), or the Reina Sofía Museum (home to Picasso’s Guernica). Tonight’s independent dinner allows you to choose between the hotel, an outdoor café, or the optional Madrid Dinner excursion (see Optional Excursions). (Breakfast)
DAY 14 - SPAIN . . Madrid.
For your final tour day in Madrid, choose the Plaza Mayor, in the heart of the city. This lively square attracts a variety of street entertainers and is a favorite spot to finish souvenir shopping. Another possibility for today is the optional Toledo excursion (see Optional Excursions) to experience one of Europe’s most ancient cities. An included “Farewell Dinner” provides a final opportunity to enjoy the company of your fellow tour participants. (Breakfast, Dinner)

OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS DETAILS
Our tours are carefully planned to offer a comfortable balance of sightseeing, entertainment and leisure time. Optional Excursions provide the flexibility to choose between leisure time or additional guided sightseeing activities. Unless otherwise noted, optional excursions must be booked with and paid to your tour manager during the tour. Prices are in U.S. Dollars. MASTERCARD®, VISA®, or DISCOVER® (no other credit cards are accepted) are recommended to avoid carrying excessive cash and exchange rate fluctuations. You must be able to present the actual card to your tour manager. If you bring a DISCOVER® card, also bring a VISA® or MASTERCARD®, as DISCOVER® is not widely accepted in Europe. Cash payments during the tour must be in Euros. Personal checks and traveler’s checks are not accepted. The operation of all excursions is subject to sufficient participation, and some excursions are subject to favorable weather conditions. Your tour manager reserves the right to make changes or cancel excursions at their sole discretion.
CASCAIS & CAPE ROCA
Travel along the west coast of Lisbon, where you will see the River Tagus and the Atlantic beaches. Shortly after passing the aristocratic resort town of Estoril, stop in the charming fishing village of Cascais for an independent lunch. Continue through Sintra-Cascais Natural Park to Cape Roca, continental Europe’s westernmost point. From here, you can admire the powerful waves pounding against the cliffs and the expansive ocean views.
FLAMENCO SHOW WITH TAPAS
During a dinner of Andalusian Tapas (an assortment of several dishes typical of the area), you will be mesmerized by the performances of skilled Flamenco dancers and their musical accompaniment. The artistically precise combination of singing, dancing, hand clapping and guitar strumming is captivating.
Stop at the tip of Malaga’s famous port for a striking view of the waterfront district. Then, from the castle ruins atop the 400-foot-high Gibralfaro Hill, you will have a bird’s-eye view of the bay. During a walk downtown, accompanied by a local guide, see the Roman Theatre ruins and the Cathedral. Round it all off with a tasting of the famed Malaga wine.
MIJAS & COUNTRY DINNER
Step back in time in the whitewashed village of Mijas. Perhaps you will take a ride or photo (approximately €15) with one of the favorite locals, the burro taxi. After exploring, admire the view as the sun starts to set over the Mediterranean. In the cozy setting of a family-operated countryside restaurant, sit down to an Andalusian dinner with wine included.
(Note: The full-day optional 'Morocco' excursion must be pre-paid with your final payment, and may be added or declined any time prior to final payment. This excursion is non-refundable after payment. A description of this optional excursion is provided below.) Depart your hotel for the two-hour transfer to the ferry dock in Tarifa. You will need your passport for the customs check as you cross from Spain into Morocco and again on the return. The fast-speed ferry takes you on a one-hour trip across the Strait of Gibraltar. After the ferry crossing, the group will be met by the local Moroccan guide and coach service who will provide guidance during your 4-hour visit to Morocco. Transfer past interesting landscapes into the Moroccan city of Tangier. The guide will point out important sights such as the Medina (old town center). You will be escorted through the fascinating and colorful souks and markets with merchants enthusiastically peddling clothing, carpets, spices, foods, and crafts. A lunch of typical Moroccan cuisine is included. In the afternoon, return to Spain by ferry and continue to your hotel by motor coach. You will have time for a late independent dinner, as is customary in Spain, after returning to your hotel.
After a two-hour motor coach transfer, walk across the border into the British Overseas Territory. At “The Rock,” a Gibraltar resident will introduce you to the natural formations inside St. Michael’s Cave, the curious Barbary Apes, and the Natural Reserve (maximum elevation 1,000 feet). Extensive views over the Mediterranean and Straight of Gibraltar allow you to see as far as the northern tip of Africa. After the mini-bus tour, you will have time for independent lunch and shopping.

Within the fortified walls of Toledo lie treasured museums, churches, synagogues and mosques, representing the combination of cultures that have thrived here. Spanish tourist camping with her husband is gang raped in India; 3 arrested as police search for more suspects
Updated on: March 4, 2024 / 8:47 AM EST / CBS/AFP
Three Indian men have appeared in court after the gang rape of a Spanish tourist on a motorbike trip with her husband, with police hunting four other suspects, reports said Monday.
The attack took place on Friday night in eastern India in Jharkhand state's Dumka district, where the couple were camping.
A total of seven men are accused of carrying out the brutal assault.
"We have formed a team to hunt the remaining suspects," senior local police officer Pitamber Singh Kherwar told AFP.
On Sunday, three accused were seen being escorted into court with sacks on their heads by police officers holding ropes tied around their waists. The three were later remanded in custody.
The Spanish woman and her husband were also in court.
The couple told Spanish TV channel Antena 3 on Saturday that the men raped the woman and hit the man repeatedly, the Reuters news agency reported. They said they had camped out because they could not find hotels nearby, Reuters reported.
"We have to ensure strict punishment," Kherwar said, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported Monday.
Kherwar said a special team including forensic officers had been formed to scour the scene of the attack, while another team was hunting more suspects.
"They are constantly raiding places," Kherwar said in PTI's report. "We will soon arrest the remaining accused."
An average of nearly 90 rapes a day were reported in India in 2022, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau.
That year, police arrested 11 people after the alleged brutal gang rape and torture of a young woman that included her being paraded through the streets of Dehli. Also in 2022, a police officer in India was arrested after being accused of raping a 13-year-old girl who went to his station to report she had been gang-raped.
In 2021, a 34-year-old woman in Mumbai died after being raped and brutally tortured .
Large numbers of rapes go unreported due to prevailing stigmas around victims and a lack of faith in police investigations.
Convictions remain rare, with cases getting stuck for years in India's clogged-up criminal justice system.
The notorious gang rape and murder of an Indian student made global headlines in 2012 .
Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, was raped, assaulted and left for dead by five men and a teenager on a bus in New Delhi in December that year.
The horrific crime shone an international spotlight on India's high levels of sexual violence and sparked weeks of protests, and eventually a change in the law to introduce the death penalty for rape .

Highlights of Portugal
Our tour CEO, Daniel, was so thoughtful and easy-going. In each city we visited, we would get an orientation walk on the first day and then plenty of freedom to explore. Daniel would still arrange casual meal times and exploration together, but he was also very flexible in letting us choose our own activities. He would make various suggestions, which helped us make decisions more easily. This type of tour is most suitable for people who prefer independent exploration to guided tours.

Portugal Coach / Bus Tour Reviews
The tour director and driver were excellent but the program could have been better managed. The program priority was on optional trips and included items in the itinerary were brushed over. The two major cities , Lisbon and Porto portion were not done justice to. Just an orientation in the bus did not do justice to the town's. Instead of the winnery tour a historical places tour would have been better. Lisbon also, except for half a monastery ( without the chapel) what did we see? Thankfully we spent extra days in Lisbon ans explored the city. The other towns were
Such an amazing trip, highly recommend!
