101 Series: Redeeming AMRewards

One of the advantages of being a travel agent is the accrued free nights you earn. These points (that equate to free nights) are accrued based on your sales performance. The more room nights you book, the more points you are rewarded with. Only select hotels and resorts offer free nights as a reward . Other hotels offer different incentives like cash, FAM trip opportunities, discounts, and more. A few weeks ago, I returned from Mexico after redeeming AMRewards . AMRewards are points that you accrue from booking clients at any of the AMResorts properties. Currently, AMResorts manage these branded hotels & resorts:

• Breathless (adults only)
• Secrets (adults only)

I’m so grateful for these resorts who acknowledge hard work and reward travel agents who spend a lot of hours selling their resorts. With that said, I took my son, mom, and nephew on this trip to celebrate my nephew’s graduation. I just had to cover the airfare. This trip was both my son and nephew’s first trip out of the country and we all had a blast! For any newer travel agents out there looking for tips, I wanted to walk you through the steps for redeeming AMRewards. This is apart of my 101 Series blog posts to help prospective travel agents.

Step 1. Visit AMRAgents Website

Visit AMRAgents at  http://amragents.net/ . After logging in, you’ll see the dashboard with the latest news. Currently, the latest news is promoting the Amazing Agent Celebration 2022 taking place this December. This is an award ceremony for the top 100 agents. On the left hand side of the dashboard, you’ll see very helpful and relevant information. You can review notifications with the latest news, media site and resources. I recommend taking the Master Agent Course so you can get familiar with their brands and resorts. Additionally, if you do not have enough points to redeem free nights you can absolutely take advantage of the agent rates and the Master Agent rates (assuming you’ve completed the Master Agent Course).

Step 2. Redeeming AMRewards

After completing your Master Agent Course and familiarizing yourself with the brands and each property, you can check out the top of the site. There, you will be able to book clients directly (though I recommend booking with a supplier that can package up flights and airport transfers). You can also update your profile and visit AMRewards. On the AMRewards page you will see the amount of points you have available, and points you have redeemed in your bank. I’ve redeemed a total of 56,940 points over the years . I’ve redeemed at Sunscape Splash Montego Bay in Jamaica (which unfortunately is no longer open) and Now Emerald Cancun which I recently returned from. Once you determine you have enough points in your bank, it’s time to go shopping!

What I love most about redeeming AMRewards is that it’s SO easy. It’s an easy booking engine where you can see availability in real time. You don’t have to email anyone and wait for a request to be granted – instant gratification!

After confirming your number of points, it’s time to redeem now! In the screenshot above, you’ll see the 4 ways you can redeem your points :

• Complimentary nights
• Gifts for clients or yourself (examples include: spa treatment, private dinner on the beach, and champagne breakfast)
• Marketing rewards (co-branded banner displays, etc.)
• Booking bonuses (VISA gift card)

Keep in mind that whatever you redeem, you’ll have to account for this during tax season. If the value of what you’ve redeemed exceeds $600 in a single calendar year you will have to pay taxes on it. Out of these options to redeem my points, I always choose the complimentary nights . In my opinion, it is the best value and provides a great way for you to get even more familiar with AMResorts’ properties.

Step 3. Select your “Complimentary Nights”

I went through the motions of selecting my room with the travel dates. The above screenshot is an example of how many points it would take for a 4-night stay at Now Emerald Cancun. After you click the “ RESERVE ” button and enter the information of the guests you will be traveling with, you are all set! You will receive email confirmation confirming your stay. It’s that simple! Depending on availability (and how many points you have), you can upgrade your room. I just went for the lead in room category – Deluxe Garden View room with 2 double beds .

When selecting your complimentary nights, you’ll first select the brand (Breathless, Dreams, Secrets, etc.). After inputting your travel dates, the available properties within your selected brand will appear. So for example, if you were to select Breathless, you would see the specific properties pop up based on your travel dates like Breathless Cabo San Lucas, Breathless Riviera Cancun, and Breathless Punta Cana.

Step 4: Travel and Enjoy your Stay!

After you are all confirmed, it’s time to book your flights and enjoy your stay.

Travel Advisers: When to Let a Professional Plan Your Trip

Decades ago, your vacation most likely began with a visit to a travel agent, who relied on a combination of expertise and connections to find the best deals on plane tickets, hotels, tours and more. Since then, the internet has turned most of us into our own travel agents, and artificial intelligence software is making research and self-booking even easier. But for some trips, that special insider knowledge can still make a big difference.

So when should you hire a professional, and how does it all work? Here are some tips.

Why should I consider a travel adviser?

It’s easy for a traveler to do the research for a standard trip, said Chris Anderson, a professor at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, “so they should look for a specialist for the type of tour they are looking for, say a bike trip in Ireland, who can really add value.”

The insider knowledge offered by a travel adviser can add the most value to trips that have multicity itineraries, involve a wide age range of travelers , are very significant (like an anniversary vacation) or are to destinations you are unfamiliar with, said Gary R. Johnson, who has run the travel agency Woodside Travel in Seattle for nearly 30 years. An adviser could help you decide, for instance, in which order to visit European cities based on local events and transportation options.

What can an adviser give me that a booking site can’t?

Travel advisers can help you research the best destinations, lodging, or activities for your particular group and travel goals, offering up specific advice that might be hard or time-consuming to find yourself. Those specializing in cruises might know which cabin to choose if you are prone to seasickness, while a safari planner could help you decide which park would be best for bird-watching or seeing specific animals, like rhinos.

Travel advisers typically have relationships with tour companies, hotels and cruise lines, sometimes through networks. Those connections can allow advisers to offer extra perks such as late checkout, free breakfast, airport transfers, a welcome basket or a credit to spend on a cruise ship.

“A good travel agent will be a better steward of your travel budget than you are,” said Guy Rubin, managing director of Imperial Tours , which arranges travel in China.

When bad weather or other circumstances disrupt your itinerary, travel advisers often have direct lines of communication with providers and can do the work of rebooking and changing plans, saving you time and stress.

OK, let’s say I need help. How do I find an adviser?

Networks like the American Society of Travel Advisors and Travel Leaders have websites that can help you start your search for a travel adviser by answering a few questions about your desired trip. Once you have a handful to choose from, get on the phone with them to talk about what they might do for you, how they charge and the level of service you can expect. Special trips can cost thousands of dollars, so it’s worth investing time up front, Mr. Rubin said.

Make sure to read over the travel agent’s reviews and any user-generated social content that mentions them, Dr. Anderson said. “If there is no external validation, that’s a red flag.”

How do advisers get paid, and how much will it cost me?

Advisers receive commission from suppliers, typically 10 to 15 percent of the price, when selling cruises, lodging and tours. They also sometimes charge travelers a planning fee, from a few hundred dollars, which may be credited to the final bill if the booking is completed, all the way up to tens of thousands of dollars annually for a luxury concierge travel planner they can call on all year. Mr. Johnson said that he charges a planning fee the first time he works with customers. If they return for other trips, he waives the fee.

Advisers may be tempted to sell you something that will earn them a higher commission, Dr. Anderson said. But, he points out, the same is true for the large online services, which promote hotels that pay them larger commissions. Travelers can ask advisers about specific commissions they receive or how they are affiliated with the products they are recommending, he said.

Sometimes a local tour company will package transportation, lodging and experiences for an adviser, who tacks on a percentage before passing it along to a client. But a bill that is not itemized can make it harder to make trade-offs — between a more expensive hotel and a special experience, for example. If pricing transparency is important to you, discuss it with the adviser up front.

How are A.I. and other technologies affecting travel advisers?

While new technologies are allowing do-it-yourselfers to create their own itineraries online based on individual preferences, and to type questions directly into travel websites, advisers are also taking advantage of those technologies to improve their services. Joan Roca, chief executive of the upscale travel planning company Essentialist said his team “uses technology to enhance the human touch,” employing artificial intelligence to choose options from a database of travel offerings selected by a human team. If a couple wants to take an after-dinner stroll, for example, Essentialist’s app will offer up ideas of where to go, based on what part of the city the travelers are in and conversations they’ve had with their travel adviser.

T here are many things that go into planning a trip. You'll need to decide where you want to go, how to get there, where you'll stay, and many more. The number of details to take care of can be overwhelming and so it's no wonder why some people hire the services of a travel agent .

A travel agent can make these and other travel arrangements for you. But, their most important role is that of a matchmaker between your needs and the myriad of businesses that offer travel-related services, such as airlines, hotels, restaurants, and tour providers. And, they make your travel seamless within your budget and preferences.

However, finding a good travel agent — or travel advisor, as they like to be called nowadays — can be difficult. With hundreds or even thousands of travel agents in a state, how do you choose which travel agent to work with? Read on to discover the secrets of how to find a good travel agent.

The first thing you should look for in a travel agent is their affiliation. In addition to membership in professional networks, it's also a good sign if your travel agent is certified by The Travel Institute, a leader in travel industry education and certification in the world. This certification might mean that your travel agent has undergone training on specific destinations or specialties as well as industry best practices.

Look For Local Travel Agents Or Ask For Referrals

When it comes to travel agents, local is the way to go. It's easier for you to determine if a travel agent might be the one if you meet them face to face. If they work in an office, you'll be able to observe how they interact with other customers. And, if in-person meetups are not possible, talking to a travel agent on the phone or via Zoom can help you determine if they're the one for you.

You'll be tapping into their unique knowledge of the place or travel style as well as their network of travel suppliers. This takes the hassle out of having to research and vet a hotel, tour company, etc. on your own. Plus, they'll be able to offer you a great deal and add on some special perks too, thanks to their already established relationships with local connections and contacts.

ASTA and Virtuoso's directories also allow you to search for travel agents based on their specializations. On Google, simply type "[specialization] travel agent" or a variation of this search term. If you're interested in landing the perfect cruise, you can search for a travel agent who specializes in this area in CLIA's directory.

Interview Or Ask Questions

In your search for the perfect travel agent, you'll find a number who may be a good fit for your needs. However, don't jump the gun before you've interviewed your top choices. You don't have to pick the first one you find.

Once you've found a travel agent you can potentially work with, it's critical that you ask them a lot of questions — and they should do the same in order to understand your travel style and needs. Inquire about their business, and fees and charges. Ask them about previous trips that are similar to what you're looking for and be upfront with your budget. You could also question them about their favorite destinations and personal travel preferences. You can — and should — ask for referrals too.

Bottom line: Look for an agent who listens and accommodates your requests instead of trying to sell you something. Someone who's proactive and offers alternatives is a great find. It's ideal to talk to your agent in person, but as already mentioned, if that's not possible, talking on the phone or via Zoom will do.

Pick The Good Ones, Avoid The Bad Ones

Here's a tip you might not have heard yet: Research your travel agent's name + "complaints." The results should tell you a lot and help with your decision to work with this travel agent or not. Other telltale signs of a bad travel agent include having no real certifications or qualifications, doesn't explain clearly their fees and charges, asking you to pay only in cash, and pushing for items that don't add value or enjoyment to your trip, i.e., looking to make a commission.

On the other hand, a good travel agent understands what you want from your vacation. Asking you a lot of questions is a good indication of this. A prompt response, like replying within 24 hours, is also a sign of a good travel agent. They should also be transparent about fees and charges, and be able to explain clearly the terms and conditions of your trip. In short, a good travel agent is great at communicating. But, they should also be good at finding the best deals as well as be flexible and creative with the options they provide you.
