Port Cozumel cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. San Miguel de Cozumel is a major cruise port and city on Cozumel Island. Cozumel is part of Mexico's Quintana Roo state, located on Yucatan Peninsula's northeastern part. This is the most visited port of call on roundtrip voyages from the USA to the Western Caribbean.

By berthing capacity and annual cruise shipping volumes, Cozumel is currently ranked the world's 4th-largest cruise port - following only Florida's PortMiami , Port Canaveral/Orlando , and Port Everglades/Fort Lauderdale .

This Mexican port city destination attracts international tourists (mostly from the USA) with its tropical weather, snorkeling, diving and sea fishing opportunities, shopping and sightseeing. The island has population around 100,000, most of whom (around 80,000) live in San Miguel de Cozumel. In Quintana Roo is also Costa Maya (Mexico's second-largest cruise port).

Port Calica is located approx 5 mi / 8 km south of Playa del Carmen . Currently, there is a small pier serving mainly ferries to / from Cozumel (approx 12 mi / 20 km away). There are two ferry companies running the Calica (Playa del Carmen)-Cozumel ferries. Tickets cost ~USD 15 pp (roundtrip). Depending on weather, the crossing Cozumel-Calica is 30-45 min.

Puerto Cozumel (locode MXCZM) is opposite Playa del Carmen and is the principal/main cruise port to Cancun - one of Mexico's most visited tourist destinations. Cancun is best known for the Mayan archaeological sites El Rey, El Meco, Coba, Muyil, Xcaret, Kohunlich, Kinichna, Dzibanche, Oxtankah, Tulum, Chacchoben, Chichen Itza. Cancun is approx 60 mi (100 km) from Cozumel (~2,5 hours drive distance) and is served by an International Airport linking via regularly scheduled flights to Canada, USA, Central and South America, Europe.

Cozumel Island offers some of the world's best underwater tour activities, with its main tourist attractions being offshore coral reefs and numerous diving shops and tour operators. The main diving areas are located on the island's western side. Its east side is relatively undeveloped but has amazing beaches with beach restaurants every few miles. The most popular among tourists beaches are Playa Palancar and Playa Azul.

Chankanaab National Park is approx 5,5 mi (9 km) south of San Miguel. The park is open daily (between 7 am - 5 pm) and as amenities offers a lagoon, beach, restaurant, full-service bar, changing rooms, several walking trails. There you can enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, SeaTREK helmet diving, swimming with dolphins. Another major attraction is the Cozumel Pearl Farm. This is an active farm surrounded by a mangrove lagoon and accessible only by boat.

The local economy depends heavily on tourism. The island's tropical climate determines the rainy season (from June through November) and the dry season (from December through May). The wet season is also characterized by hurricanes.

Cozumel cruise port

A single cruise vessel in Cozumel (with max passenger capacity 3000 plus max crew 500) generates on average spending USD 313740 (passengers) and USD 31740 (crew), plus nearly USD 29000 in port fees. This results in total contribution to the local economy of USD 374480 - and this is per ship.

The following statistical data was provided by the Cozumel port authority.

In 2006 the cruise port received 2,028 million passengers, out of all the 5,551 million that visited Mexico that year. In 2007, this number jumped to 2,45 million (23% increase), while Mexico saw a 10% growth (to 6+ million).

In 2009, the average per-passenger spending in Cozumel was USD 105 (17% increase over 2008) directly benefiting various local industries through purchases (goods and services), including tours (shore excursions), drinks and food, retail shopping, ground transportation services.

In 2014, the cruising industry generated in Cozumel USD 565,4 million in cruise spending (crews, passengers and shipping companies combined), 15990 local jobs, USD 93,5 million in wages (produced through cruise ship tourism).

In 2014, the cruise port handled over 3,3 million passengers. In 2017, this number reached 3,6 million, ranking Cozumel the world's leading cruise ship tourism destination. In October 2015, the port hosted the second "FCCA Cruise Conference and Trade Show" (Oct 5-9).

In December 2020, Quintana Roo media reported that a new (USD 10 pp) tourist tax on foreigners goes into effect since April 1, 2021. Details on how it will be collected or will it be applied also to cruise ship tourists were not revealed.

In early-February 2021 was proposed that following the impact of the Coronavirus crisis, Cozumel could be also used as homeport (departure port) for roundtrips to Caribbean island destinations - including Cuba. The idea is well backed up by the cheap flights from the USA and Port Cozumel's lower dockage fees, in comparison to the American ports' fees.

During the post-COVID season 2022, Port Cozumel recorded a total of 1117 ship calls and handled 2,943760 million cruisers. For season 2023, the Port had booked 1154 ship berthings (scheduled ship visits) with estimated 3,726115 million tourists.

Royal Beach Club Cozumel (Royal Caribbean Resort)

In late-March 2024, RCG/Royal Caribbean Group announced its plans for the Royal Beach Club Cozumel.

Scheduled for inauguration in 2026, this exclusive destination (to be developed at Cozumel Island's western coast) will feature several beaches (including adults-only and suite guests-only), kids playgrounds, resort-style large freshwater swimming pools, swim-up bars, various drinking and dining venues (lounges, bars, snack shacks, restaurants), Street Market (shops) as well as live music and entertainment, private cabanas (for rent), watersports activities (snorkeling/scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing).

Cozumel cruise terminal

San Miguel de Cozumel cruise port has three different piers for docking. They all are located on the west side of the island. If in your cruise itinerary to Cozumel is added "Fundeo", that means the cruise ship will anchor in the harbor and passengers will be transported to and from the shore (Punta Langosta pier) via the ship's tender boats.

Punta Langosta Pier Cruise Terminal

Punta Langosta Pier is located right downtown San Miguel. You can walk on your own or join guided walking tour in the city. There is also a taxi rank in front the pier. Taxis are relatively inexpensive. If you want to rent a car, the closest offices are 5 blocks from the cruise ship pier.

International Pier

The largest vessels (including Royal Caribbean and NCL ships) dock at International Pier. This is Cozumel's oldest pier, located at ~5 min taxi ride from San Miguel. After disembarkation, passengers walk through a shopping plaza with various shops, restaurants, bars. This is a shopping area exclusively for cruise tourists. All the venues here open only during cruise ship calls. Prices here tend to be higher than in the city.

The pier is approx 1,5 mi / 2,5 km from downtown San Miguel (to the south). The distance is easily walkable (~30 min), and most pleasant as it is along the waterfront promenade. There is also a taxi rank in front of the cruise ship pier. Taxi ride is ~10 min. If the lines of disembarking passengers waiting for taxis are long, you can exit the pier, walk toward El Cid La Ceiba Hotel and catch a taxi on the street there.

Carnival's Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal

The third Cozumel cruise ship pier was built by Carnival Corporation and serves exclusively its brand companies' vessels. Puerta Maya is located 0,5 mi (0,8 km) south of The International Pier. The terminal (aka Little Cozumel) has the most modern and diverse facilities.

• In October 2015, Carnival Corporation inaugurated the opening of a parallel berth (3rd) to the Puerta Maya cruise pier. Carnival Freedom was the first ever ship to dock there. Since then, Puerta Maya pier has capacity of 4 vessels that can be berthed there simultaneously.
• Cozumel's 3rd (new) cruise berth cost USD 20 million. Its opening followed by just 2 days the inauguration of Carnival's new and exclusive Dominican Republic cruise port Amber Cove (USD 85 million construction project).
• In 2015, Carnival Corporation cruise ships brought to Cozumel over 1,7 million tourists.

• Retail priced shopping is offered at Dufry, Ron Jon, Miro, Eriks, Hammock Island, The T-Shirt Place, Rogers Boots, Pirana Joe, Boutique Sr Frogs, Mare Blue, Tan Tan, Veari, La Vikina, Dufry Tequileria, Lupita, and Viva Mexico.
• Jewelry and designer watches are offered at Diamond International, Who Knew, Touch O Gold, Regal Silver, Indigo, Plateria D'Alberto, Joyeria Ruby's, Milano, Joyeria Montero, Silver Emporium, Red, Fiesta Maya, Caribbean Pirates, Miro, Le Best, Reef, Del Sol, Rogers Boots, Mayan Flea Market, and Los Cinco Soles.
• Cruise passenger services are offered at Costa Dental, and Drugs & Deli.
• All car rental offices in Puerta Maya are in building 19 - Avis, Alamo, specialty cars and executive cars.
• The terminal also has a Shorex Booth (shore excursions / tours booking and information), phones, restrooms, First Aid Assistance, and Coral Reef Exhibit gallery.

Car rentals are offered by all major companies, with their offices located near the cruise piers. The San Miguel town itself is easily walkable. Its main attractions are the numerous shops and eateries. Most tourist shops are around the town's main plaza.

Port Cozumel also has a Ferry Pier located to the north of Punta Langosta. It serves the regularly scheduled ferry service between San Miguel de Cozumel and Playa del Carmen .

New cruise terminal on Cozumel Island?

In October 2018 was conducted a study for building a new (4th) cruise terminal on Cozumel Island to cope with the constantly increasing passenger shipping traffic. According to Quintana Roo state's statistics, in 2018 the island was visited by over 3,1 million cruise ship tourists (passengers and crew).

The study analyzed the possible environmental impact for the island ( transportation, waste and provision services) and its marine area . The new facility could be constructed and operated by Disney Cruise Line .

Previously, the plan for a 4th berth was rejected in June 2016 by local residents following public consultation. The site for the new terminal was in front of Marina Banco Playa (Puerto de Abrigo, island's northern coast).

• Castillo Real: this a Mayan site located near the northern tip of the island. You can see a temple, lookout tower and a pyramid base. There are also possibilities for snorkeling.
• Cozumel Park: Discover Mexico with interactive exhibits. Interesting place for lunch is Mercadito Corona. You will taste authentic cuisine surrounded by local music.
• El Cedral: the village is located near the center of the island. It was the first discovered Mayan site in 1518 by the Spanish explorers.
• Chankanaab Lagoon: amazing place for swimming and snorkeling among rainbow colored fishes.
• Museo de Cozumel: discover the history of the island. The museum also houses library, gift shop, book store and a restaurant.
• Plaza Del Sol: the main square of San Miguel.
• Punta Celarin: the lighthouse is located at the island’s southern end and has breathtaking views.
• San Gervasio Ruins: the most visited ruins.

Beaches: Cozumel offers amazing beaches. Among the most popular are Playa San Francisco and Playa Corona.

Nachi Cocom Beach is an all-inclusive beach resort (unlimited beverages) with day pass entrance. Deals are inclusive of unlimited beverages and food, free Wi-Fi internet, outdoor Jacuzzi and swimming pool. This private beach property is sized approx 185 m2 (1980 ft2). The list of amenities also includes a swim-up bar, beach bar, public restrooms, outdoor showers (freshwater), beach hammocks, palapas umbrellas, English-speaking staff, lounge chairs.

Mr Sanchos Beach Resort (Cozumel Island's southwest coast, ~15-min taxi drive from the cruise port) is all-inclusive, with day passes offering unlimited food (self-serve buffet station) and beverages (Mexican brands), beach access and amenities (chairs, umbrellas), swimming pools access (all have swim-up bars). The resort also has an aqua park (costs extra) fitted with trampolines, inflatable climbing Iceberg and climbing rock, pyramid slider, rock slider, among other attractions.

Other popular beaches are Paradise Beach, Playa Palancar, Playa Mia. Cozumel features several great resorts / eco-parks, often included in cruise lines' shore excursion offerings. The most popular among cruise tourists parks are Chankanaab, Xcaret, Punta Sur.

Cozumel, the largest of Mexico's islands in the Caribbean Sea, has everything you’d want from a typical beach getaway: white-sand beaches, swaying palm trees, crystal-clear water, and a laid-back lifestyle. But for some Mexican flair, it also offers Mayan ruins, traditional Yucatecan cuisine, and lots of beach bars to snag a tropical tequila-based beverage. 

The 185-square-mile island happens to be the most popular cruise port in Mexico, and its main town, San Miguel, hums with foot traffic thanks to the large volume of ships that call here every year. As you can imagine, San Miguel can be an overwhelming blend of souvenir stands and overpriced restaurants, but if you know where to look, you can find the real-deal eateries and locals-only beaches that fly under the radar. Venturing beyond the small town puts you at the doorstep of a protected natural environment and some of the very best scuba diving and snorkeling on the planet.

"Cozumel is a a limestone island in the Caribbean Sea. It's basically the terminus of the second-longest barrier reef in the world, and it's one of the busiest cruise ship ports. It sees around 3,000 ships a year carrying more than four million passengers," said Zach Rabinor , CEO of Journey Mexico and a Travel + Leisure A-List advisor. "The island is dominated by the cruise trade and swarms with local merchants hawking everything from tours to time-share real estate. That said, it has its own charm and there are pockets of local flavor."

This adults-only all-inclusive may not be right on the beach, but don't let that dissuade you. Dive the Mesoamerican Reef.

Cozumel is perched at the northern tip of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System — the second-largest barrier reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef. Teeming with wildlife, including colorful coral, a kaleidoscope of fish, sea turtles, and sharks, the reef system is one of the star attractions in Cozumel and diving is a top priority for visitors.

Snorkel Playa El Cielo.

You don't have to be PADI-certified or go very far offshore to have an epic underwater experience in Cozumel. Off the southern coast of the island is a beach called Playa El Cielo, famous for the thousands of underwater starfish scattered across the fine white sand, much like stars in the sky. El Cielo translates to "heaven," and it will be no surprise why this beach bears its name. "El Cielo is an incredible shoal/sandbar, and it's only accessible by boat. It's a 30-minute trip and absolutely worth it for those wishing to escape the more crowded beaches," said Rabinor.

Visit Isla Pasion.

As if Cozumel doesn't have enough pristine beachfront, many day trippers to the island like to pop over to the nearby uninhabited Isla Pasion. The dreamy island has crystal-clear water, sun-bleached sand, and plenty of activities to keep visitors occupied, from kayaks and hammocks to beach volleyball, buffet-style restaurants, and bars. Lots of cruise lines also offer packages for excursions to Isla Pasion, so it's easy to squeeze in a visit.

Head to the beach clubs.

Cozumel has its own picture-perfect beaches and beach clubs, too. Most day trippers visiting on a cruise will stick to the beach clubs facing the calm Caribbean Sea and Playa del Carmen skyline. These spots have restaurants, showers, and restrooms, as well as plenty of water sports. For the more local beaches, which are often less crowded and less developed, head to the eastern coast of the island. These stretches face the Atlantic Ocean and are much more rugged, albeit beautiful.

Drive around the island.

Whether on two wheels or four, the best way to see the most of Cozumel is to get out on the road. One highway circumvents the island and along the way are many different points of interest, from beach clubs to Mayan ruins to the Punta Sur Eco Beach Park.

Los Cinco Soles

Being the most popular cruise port in Mexico means Cozumel has its fair share of souvenir stores. But the one to beat them all is Los Cinco Soles . Unlike other busy cruise port shops, Los Cinco Soles is at the far end of downtown and widely considered to have the best selection of handcrafts, silver, and naturally grown vanilla.

Muebles Rústicos Santa Cruz

This quirky furniture store is packed with some beautifully handcrafted wooden pieces. While you may not be able to bring that ornately carved headboard on the plane or cruise ship, you can certainly find lots of other treasures, from artwork and ceramics to cool lamps and picture frames.

Sergio's Silver

Mexican silver is a great trinket to bring home, and on Cozumel, Sergio's has the best selection of jewelry. Plus, the centrally located shop is within walking distance of the cruise terminal downtown.

The Coconut Shack

If you’re exploring the eastern coast of the island, be sure to schedule a stop at The Coconut Shack. This ramshackle beach bar has a handful of plastic tables out back overlooking the water, a few colorful hammocks, and next-level mojitos.

Mezcalito's

While you're over on the eastern side of the island, leave some time to visit Mezcalito's, one of the oldest bars on Cozumel. Open since 1979, this watering hole offers a casual, toes-in-the-sand experience with palapa-topped umbrellas and endless Atlantic Ocean views.

No Name Bar

Tucked inside Hotel Barracuda, No Name Bar is another Cozumel staple. A beach club by day, sports bar by night, this oceanfront club has strong drinks, no cover charge, and free Wi-Fi. 

El Cielo Lounge Bar

There's a certain kitsch factor at El Cielo Lounge Bar , from the neon cursive signs encouraging bad decisions to the electric blue cocktails and clouds of hookah smoke. But that's also what devotees love about this place. Cozumel may be small, but it knows how to party into the wee hours, and you'll often find people pushing their bedtimes at El Cielo.

Aqui + Ahora

Sometimes, all you need is a strong cup of coffee and a menu that serves breakfast till noon. That's what you'll get at Aqui + Ahora , a coffee shop with a prime location across from the ferry terminal. I love this spot for its sleek decor, sea views, and long list of great juices. The Yucatan Dream 85 is a must.

Beach clubs are a dime a dozen on Cozumel, but Buccanos stands out in the best way. Located in the North Hotel Zone, it's centrally located with a sandy beach and laid-back vibe. It also has some of the best seafood in town. Expect to pay tourist prices, but that's the norm on Cozumel. By night, Buccanos puts on a spectacular sunset dinner experience. It's best to make reservations far in advance, if possible.

La Casita de Indio

You won't find any other experience like La Casita de Indio on Cozumel. If you're someone who loves a local connection, this is the dining experience to try. "This local spot has a family cooking for you in their own home," said Rabinor. "They even encourage you to go to the fish market and bring them the catch of the day, which they will prepare for you. They prepare a mean coconut shrimp."

Guido's

If you're craving something other than Mexican, Guido's serves up great Swiss Italian cuisine in a lovely courtyard. Rabinor said the fish carpaccio and the black linguine Frutti di Mare is excellent.

The best time to visit Cozumel is between December and April, particularly if you want a beach getaway. This period is the peak season, marked by sunny days and little to no rainfall. For ideal weather — not too hot and with a cool breeze at night — January and February are the best times to plan a trip.

However, if you want the best conditions for scuba diving, consider June through December. The summer is the hottest time of year, and you'll experience the most rainfall in late summer and early fall, but you'll also be able to snag considerable travel deals and see lots of activity beneath the water's surface. 

If you plan to visit from August through October, you'll be traveling during peak hurricane season. Travel prices are at their lowest during this time, so you'll want to use those extra savings to get yourself some travel insurance, just in case you get rained out.

For an island that's only 185 square miles, there are a surprising number of ways to get there. The easiest way to reach Cozumel is to fly directly into its airport (CZM). The small Aeropuerto Internacional de Cozumel receives flights from American, Delta, Southwest, United, Volaris, Aeromexico, Air Canada, WestJet, and Sun Country Airlines. 

Another easy way to get to Cozumel is to take the ferry from Playa del Carmen. The popular Ultramar ferry has continuous departures from Playa del Carmen's main pier to Cozumel. The trip is about 45 minutes.

The third way visitors get to Cozumel is via a cruise stopover. Cozumel is the busiest cruise port in Mexico, with its three piers seeing as many as seven ships at once during high season.

Cozumel is a small but well-maintained island with a ring road, as well as one that bisects the island. It only takes an hour to drive around the island. 

Downtown San Miguel is walkable, but if you want to go further afield, you may need some wheels. Fortunately, cabs are found around the island, but due to demand, prices can get expensive. You can rent your own set of wheels on Cozumel to have a bit more flexibility for getting around. Note that while you may see a lot of tourists on scooters, the accident rate on Cozumel is extremely high, so be sure you know what you're doing before you rent one on the island.

Cozumel – Mexico

Welcome to the Cozumel Cruise Port Guide. Cozumel is the largest Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea. The main town on the island is called San Miguel. The island lies 19 km / 12 miles in front of Playa del Carmen on the mainland. Cozumel is a perfect destination for those looking for beaches, shopping, scuba diving and snorkelling. But for those interested in history instead of beaches you are at the right spot as well! The island has a number of Mayan ruines like San Gervasi and you could even visit the famous Chichen Itza when your ship is in port in Cozumel.

Cruise Port Guide Cozumel – Mexico: docked

Puerta Maya Pier and TMM International Pier: generally used by Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, AIDA, Holland America Line and Costa Cruises

These cruise docks are about 1/2 mile away from each other (see map above). The dock is about 5 miles south of the main town San Miguel. Here you will find a large cruise centre with all you cruise, shopping and tourist facilities right there! Find well known retailers as Del Sol, Diamonds International and Piranha Joe’s right there at the cruise centre. You will even find a pharmacy, convenience access and a special excursion pier here. If you don’t want to stick around the cruise centre you can take a taxi south (5 minute ride south) to the beaches, beach clubs and marine park. You can also take a take north (10 minute ride) to the downtown shopping area.

Punta Langosta pier: generally used by Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney, Princess and Voyager of the seas

This dock is located in the city centre of San Miguel. From here it’s a pretty 1,5 mile walk to the city’s bars, restaurants and downtown San Miguel along the nice waterfront promenade. Some of the things to do is the San Miguel Walking Tour and of course shopping should be on your list as well! At about 10 minutes drive you will find the Chankannab National Park as well as several beaches. At less than 5 minutes you will find the Playa Azul. Car Rentals can be found at 5 blocks from the pier you will find a car rental (Smart Car and Alamo).

Funded: tender pier

This actually means you wont be docking at all, but you will tendering. Often the San Miguel pier is used as a tender pier. This is also the pier of the ferry’s between Playa Del Carmen and the island. There are plenty of taxis here and you are within easy walking distance to shopping, restaurants and bars.

Taxis at Cozumel

You will find plenty of taxis at the cruise terminals. All drivers are required to carry a rates card. Most of them speak proper English. Taxi prices underneath are an estimation of a one way journey and should be used as a guideline when negotiating. Prices are per taxi up to 4 people: Downtown = 95 pesos or 8 US dollar Mercado = 100 pesos or 8 US dollar Chankanaab park = 150 pesos or 11 US dollar Playa Uvas = 150 pesos or 11 US dollar Playa Corona = 160 pesos or 12 US dollar Airport = 190 pesos or 15 US dollar South Point = 720 pesos or 45 US dollar Mayan Ruins = 720 pesos or 45 US dollar Island Tour = 800 pesos or 50 US dollar

Ferries to Playa del Carmen

You can take a ferry to the mainland at the San Miguel Passenger Ferry Pier in downtown San Miguel. The crossing takes about 45 minutes. Ferries go about every hour. Keep in mind the schedule could change without notice. Tickets cost between around 12 US dollar per adult and 7 US dollar per child.

The cruise dock of Punta Langosta is the most Northern cruise dock on the island. From here it is about 1,5 mile walk to the city center of San Miguel, but you will find lots of facilities like restaurants, bars, shops and car rental near the cruise area. Cozumel offers several docking locations for cruise ships. Puerto Maya & TMM cruise pier is one of those locations. It is the most southern dock of all. There are actually three different pier locations.

Punta Langosta (used by Disney, NCL, MSC, Oceania, Silversea, Marella Cruises) , is located right downtown and after leaving the ship and walking towards the city down the dock, you will go over an overpass into a shopping mall. You are right in the heart of downtown Cozumel. One can also take a ferry to Playa Del Carmen. Always get a one-way ticket as the different ferry companies do not accept each other's tickets. The companies are Winjet  and  Ultramar's . The ferry ride can be a little rough!

The International Pier (used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise ships, consisting of two piers, is about a 10-minute taxi ride south of town, you can walk it in about 30 minutes right along the coastline, but if it is hot, take a taxi. If the lines are really long just get out of the taxi line and walk out the exit of the pier to the street - turn left and walk toward the El Cid La Ceiba Hotel. There are taxis coming from town trying to get into the pier and they are thrilled to get a fare without having to get in the long line of cars at the pier.

The third pier, Puerto Maya, ( used by cruise lines sailing under Carnival Corporation flag) consisting of three piers, is just beyond the International Pier and has the same dynamics.

Finally, when there are too many ships in port, some ships will anchor outside and tender into the Punta Langosta pier.

Monthly Climate Averages for Cozumel

Sightseeing:

Most visitors travel to Cozumel to see what is underwater. While there are quite a few beach clubs that offer to snorkel, the main attractions are the reefs offshore and the multitude of dive shops ready to take you there. The main town and dive operations are on the west side of the island, but if you rent a Beetle or scooter then the east side of the island is the place to go. The east side of the island is mostly undeveloped, but there are beautiful beaches, big waves, and rocky outcrops over the ocean. If the waves are sufficient you can find a few small blow holes. You will also find a restaurant on the beach every few kilometers.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Rent a car from any of the well-known firms. You will find them near the cruise ship docks. Since there is only one main road you will not get lost.

Expect to pay $10 for the ride into San Miguel from the pier. Most taxi drivers ask much more when in doubt, ask to see the rate card required of all taxi drivers to carry.

San Miguel is very walkable and you can easily explore the waterfront and plaza area on foot. The main attractions are the small eateries and shops that line the streets and the main square.

Mini Submarine Tour — a new way of exploring the underwater world. This new activity by Cozumel Water Sports offers all non divers and non snorkelers to explore the reefs and sea life of Cozumel. Riding your underwater scooter with your head dry in the air filled helmet, you can drive around the reefs. Especially great for people who wear glasses as you can have them on under water.

The primary gateway between Cozumel and the mainland of the Yucatan Peninsula, including Cancun and the Riviera Maya, is the passenger ferry to Playa del Carmen, which is especially popular with cruise ship passengers coming to the mainland to see attractions like the Mayan Ruins, Xcaret, or Xel Ha.

Nearby Places:

Chankanaab National Park , (About 9km south of town), 7am - 5pm daily. The park includes a beach, restaurant, bar, changing rooms, walking trails, and a lagoon with a large iguana population. Activities include snorkeling & diving, swimming with the dolphins, scuba, and Seatrek. $2 coupon and packages available at their website. approx. $22 for adults.

Being the only active Pearl Farm in the Caribbean, Cozumel Pearl Farm is located in a natural protected area that remains pristine and untouched; it is only accessible by boat since it is surrounded by the mangrove lagoon ecosystem on one side and the fascinating turquoise color waters of the Caribbean on the other.

Chichen Itza Chichen Itza is a well-known Archaeological Site and more after being selected one of the New 7 Wonders of the World in July the 7th, 2007. Two hours away from the cruise terminals.

Río Secreto Río Secreto could very well be one of the great world wonders. Experience this stunning underground river with thousands of dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. It's like stepping back in time to witness something mysterious and truly spectacular. About 30 minutes drive from the cruise terminals.

Shopping and Food

Silver is cheaper here than in the U.S. but be sure to look for the .925 stamp as some places do sell fake silver jewelry. Tip: To avoid being caught out, carry a small magnet when you shop. If the silver sticks to the magnet then it is not sterling silver.

The currency of Mexico is the peso (MXN). The symbol for pesos is the same as for US dollars, which can be slightly confusing. Prices in dollars (in tourist areas) are labeled "US$" or sport an S with a double stroke. There is about 17 peso to 1US$.

Credit cards are not as widely accepted as in Europe or the USA. Some companies make an extra charge of around 5% on such transactions. Cash is King here.

Spanish is the main language. English is largely spoken in border cities with the United States as well as tourist destinations.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Traditionally, stores are open from 9 to 1 (except Sunday) and 5 to 9, but those nearest the pier tend to stay open all day, particularly during high season. Most shops are closed Sunday morning.

Culture & History of the Cozumel Cruise Port

When the Mayans settled in Cozumel two thousand years ago, they dedicated the town to the Mayan goddess of fertility and love, Ixchel. The word “Cozumel” means “Land of the Swallow” in Mayan, symbolizing Ixchel’s favorite bird. Spanish settlers didn’t visit Cozumel until the 16th century, when the Cortés expedition traveled through. In 1520, Spanish crew members brought smallpox to Cozumel, devastating the Mayan population.

Cozumel’s popularity as a tourism destination skyrocketed in the 1960s when word of the island’s scuba diving potential traveled through the grapevine. Diving and charter fishing became central to the economy of the island. Today, Cozumel is a major port of call, welcoming over a million cruise passengers annually.

Cozumel Port Facilities & Location

The Cozumel cruise port is on the Western side of the island, where there happen to be three piers in total. The International Pier is one of the oldest and most-trafficked port areas. It’s about two miles to reach San Miguel, which you can access either on foot with a long walk or take a ten-minute taxi ride from the cruise port terminal. You’ll find food, shopping, and complimentary WiFi beyond the terminal.

Transportation in Cozumel

You can rent a car while in Cozumel to get to the far reaches of the island, including some of the nature excursions and harder-to-reach parks. For daredevils, a scooter or bicycle is an exciting way to navigate the island. Helmets required. Then, of course, there are plenty of taxis at the cruise terminal and around the island. Taxi drivers know their value on the island, so be sure to settle on a fare before you drive off. Of course, it’s easy to explore areas surrounding the port on foot if you feel like stretching your sea legs during your stop in Cozumel.

Shopping Near the Cozumel Cruise Port

After you disembark from the cruise ship, particularly at International Pier, you’ll find duty-free shops and souvenir shacks before you leave the terminal. The Royal Village Shopping Center is also conveniently located near International Pier, where you can purchase handmade goods, jewelry, and other items. San Miguel also has plentiful shopping just two or three miles away from International Pier.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Though the local currency is the peso, many stores will accept U.S. dollars (USD), so you likely won’t need to exchange money. Find ATMs near the cruise docks for all your withdrawal needs. Tipping is encouraged, particularly for bartenders, tour guides, and restaurant service. A tip of 15-20% is recommended.

Are cruise ports in Mexico safe?

According to the U.S. Department of State ’s travel advisories for Mexico at the time of writing, a ‘Do Not Travel’ advisory is in effect for the states where Manzanillo, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Acapulco, Topolobampo, and Mazatlán are located. Further, a ‘Reconsider Travel’ advisory is in effect for the states where Ensenada, Puerto Vallarta, and Guaymas are located.

This is not to say that you need to completely cancel a cruise that visits these places or not even consider booking one that stops there. But if you do take a voyage to one of these ports, we recommend either staying within the developed port area or taking an organized excursion — not venturing out too far on your own.

If going ashore at all makes you uncomfortable, consider staying on the ship that day and enjoying it while it’s much less crowded! Remember that it’s in the best interest of the cruise lines to keep their passengers safe. If the situation gets too bad in a particular area, cruise lines have been known to cancel calls to that port entirely to keep their guests and crew safe.

As for all other ports in Mexico, it’s always good to exercise a healthy level of caution. Leave your expensive accessories and jewelry on the ship, pay attention to your surroundings, and try to stay in more highly trafficked/touristy areas. Like with most countries, there are safer areas than others in Mexico, and certainly some ports are more advisable to visit than others. Check the latest Department of State travel advisories before you book and again right before sailing to help inform your decisions.

Cruise line that visits Cancun: American Queen Voyages.

Currently the only cruise line that visits Cancun is American Queen Voyages, as the port can only accommodate small vessels. Thus, it isn’t as popular with ships as other destinations in Mexico. During a voyage that does stop here, guests can spend the day on the beach, explore nearby Mayan ruins, or enjoy local cuisine.

Playa del Carmen

Another seldom-visited destination for cruise ships, Playa del Carmen has beautiful beaches of its own, but is often a jumping-off point for those who want to head north to busier Cancun.

Cruise line that visits Campeche: American Queen Voyages.

Campeche is a fortified port city, whose walls were built in the mid-1600s to protect against pirates. This city is great for exploring on foot, and is known for its historic district, military architecture, and baroque colonial buildings. For those who want to see Mayan ruins, those are also an option for exploring nearby.

Located about 90 miles and a two hours’ drive south of San Diego, Ensenada is one of the most popular cruise ports in Mexico as it’s so close to southern California homeports. Cruise passengers arriving in Ensenada can go horseback riding, take a wine or food tour, see the La Bufadora geyser, or spend time in town shopping and enjoying the city streets.

Cabo San Lucas

Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is one of the most popular vacation spots in Mexico, and is home to some of the country’s best beaches. Known for its clear blue waters and rock formations, Loreto is a beautiful coastal city located on the eastern side of the Baja California Peninsula. Activities to do include strolling along the Malecon boardwalk, enjoying the city’s colonial architecture, or visiting Loreto National Marine Park, nicknamed “The Aquarium of the World” due to plentiful marine life that make it an excellent spot for diving and snorkeling.

Cruise lines that visit Huatulco: Holland America, Crystal, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess, Seabourn, Oceania, and American Queen Voyages.

Located in southern Mexico, Huatulco is a growing tourist area that features the charming old town of La Crucecita. Visiting cruise guests can head to nearby Santa Cruz to enjoy the beach, go snorkeling, go deep sea fishing, see waterfalls at Cascadas Magicas, or explore the Bocana del Rio Copalita archaeological site.

Puerto Chiapas

Cruise lines that visit Puerto Chiapas: Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line, Seabourn, and American Queen Voyages.

During a cruise stop in Puerto Chiapas, you may consider taking a tour of nearby cacao, banana, or coffee plantations; explore the Izapa ruins; or walk the charming streets in the nearby historic city of Tapachula.

Cruise lines that visit La Paz: Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Crystal, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, UnCruise Adventures, and American Queen Voyages.

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur. In this bustling cruise port in Mexico, you can stroll along the Malecon boardwalk, enjoy shops and restaurants, hit the beach, go kayaking, or head out snorkeling with whale sharks or scuba diving.

San José del Cabo

Cruise lines that visit San Jose del Cabo: Lindblad Expeditions and UnCruise Adventures.

Most cruise ships that visit the southern end of the Baja California Peninsula are heading to Cabo San Lucas, which is just a 30 minutes’ drive from San José del Cabo. However, sometimes very small cruise lines like to dock at San José del Cabo instead.

Heading over to Cabo San Lucas is an option for passengers who dock at this port, but San José del Cabo has plenty for a port day on its own. These include exploring the downtown art district, hitting the nearby beaches which are popular for surfing, going deep-sea fishing, or touring local breweries.

Cruise lines that visit Acapulco: Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, Silversea, and Crystal.

Acapulco is one of the biggest Mexican party destinations. But it’s also one of the most dangerous cruise ports in Mexico due to crime. Guests should exercise caution when visiting Acapulco, and we recommend taking an organized excursion through your cruise line.

Things to do include hitting the beach; exploring shops, restaurants, and bars near the port area; exploring Old Acapulco; and watching cliff divers at La Quebrada.

Cruise lines that visit Manzanillo: Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess, Holland America, Oceania, and American Queen Voyages.

With 40 miles of Pacific coastline, Manzanillo, Mexico is also a nice port to have a beach day. Further points of interest in the area include the Las Hadas Golf Resort, the Tortugario Ecological Center with a turtle sanctuary, and the nearby city of Colima and town of Comala. Scuba diving and snorkeling are popular activities in Manzanillo as well.

Cruise line that visits Guaymas: Holland America Line.

One of the quieter cruise ports in Mexico, many passengers who dock in Guaymas head to nearby San Carlos, which features miles of bays and beaches to enjoy. In addition to exploring the coastline, guests may hike the Nacapule Canyon, visit the Guaymas Historical Museum, go deep-sea fishing, or head out on a snorkeling or scuba diving excursion.

Cruise line that visits Cabo Pulmo: Lindblad Expeditions.

Cabo Pulmo is a tiny resort town that’s world-renowned for its unspoiled marine landscape. In fact, it’s designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the “Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California.” So unsurprisingly, the best thing to do during a port call here is snorkel or scuba dive at Cabo Pulmo National Park, which features a beautiful living coral reef.

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo

Cruise lines that visit Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo: Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Oceania Cruises.

When docking at the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo cruise port, guests have the option to visit one or both of the two towns that the port serves: Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo (located three miles apart). Guests can hit the beach, go shopping, enjoy local cuisine, and visit shops selling lots of handmade goods in both towns. Deep sea fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking are also popular activities.

Topolobampo

Cruise lines that visit Topolobampo: There are no current cruises scheduled to visit in 2024 or 2025.

There are no current voyages that have calls to Topolobampo. However, it does have cruise ship facilities, and Holland America has visited in the past. Popular activities to do in the area include taking a picturesque train ride through the Copper Canyon, hitting the beach, going snorkeling, heading out on a deep-sea fishing excursion, and enjoying the local cuisine.

Santa Rosalia

Cruise lines that visit Santa Rosalia: There are no current cruises scheduled to visit in 2024 or 2025.

Likewise, Santa Rosalia has no scheduled voyages, but cruises have called there in the past. Founded by the French, architecture in this small, old mining town is European-inspired but the culture is thoroughly Mexican. Guests can explore the town, visiting the Iglesia de Santa Barbara (Church of Santa Barbara) and Panaderia El Boleo, a bakery that still uses a wood-fired stove to bake bread and pastries.

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 3 routes I'd sail again in a heartbeat and 3 I'd probably skip.

• I've been on 50 cruises (at least six a year), and some routes are better than others. 
• I try to avoid cruises that make stops at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas.
• My favorite cruise I've ever been on was a Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona. 

I've taken 50 cruises with family and friends, and I'm always looking to try out new routes with different port stops .

Before I ever book a cruise — which I do about six times a year — I try to find either a new-to-me ship or a new-to-me route. If neither of those options works for my budget or timeframe, I opt for a familiar favorite.

Here are my favorite cruise routes that I'm always happy to book, and the ones I don't need to sail again.

My favorite route is a Mediterranean cruise that starts and ends in Barcelona, Spain.

Mediterranean cruises start and end in various ports of call around Europe, typically throughout the summer sailing season.

Last year, my family and I took a Disney Cruise that started and ended in Barcelona, with stops in France and Italy.

My favorite part of this trip was splitting a day between Nice and Eze in the French Riviera . I was able to walk through cobblestone streets overlooking the ocean while sipping on limoncello.

I love Caribbean cruises along the western ports.

I've taken many western Caribbean routes over the years on Carnival Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line, and they never disappoint.

The route usually includes stops at Cozumel, Mexico, and Georgetown, Grand Cayman. But it may also include ports of call at Falmouth, Jamaica; Costa Maya, Mexico; or Roatán, Honduras.

I always get off the ship in Cozumel, even if it's just to have lunch at a taco shop. Don't get lured into the restaurants right at the docks because the best food is in the spots farther down the main street.

I also love getting off in Roatán. On a recent cruise, I took an excursion to Roatan Island Brewing Company to try different beers made with local ingredients.

I also enjoy routes that only stop at private islands.

Every once in a while, I can find a short three-night cruise on Royal Caribbean or Disney that only visits the brand's private islands.

These short cruises are ideal weekend getaways and go to some of my favorite ports of call, like Royal Caribbean's CocoCay and Disney's Castaway Cay.

I love both of these destinations because there's so much to do — you really can spend the entire day at the beach or exploring the various parts of the island. I also love that food and drinks are all provided, so I don't have to return to the ship for lunch.

On the other hand, I don't need to go to Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas again.

I love short cruises from Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but they often mean stopping at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas .

I don't really think there's much to see at either stop once you've done it once or twice. If my route includes them, I usually stay on the ship to enjoy the less crowded pool and spa.

The trade-off for these two ports is often getting to visit a cruise line's private island , so I think it's worth it for that. But I don't need to go on another long cruise through the Bahamas.

I'm also not a big fan of Bimini, Bahamas.

Many cruise lines, like Carnival and Virgin Voyages , are now taking cruisers to Bimini for an easy beach day. But if you're not a big fan of chilling at the beach, there's not much else to do on the island.

I’d probably skip cruising to Key West.

I love Key West in the Florida Keys , but as a port stop, it was hard to see a lot of the island and explore beyond Duval Street.

I'd prefer to spend a few days in the destination to explore all that it has to offer instead of making it a cruise stop.

R oyal Beach Club Cozumel is the next private destination to be added to Royal Caribbean’s already amazing line up. Allowing for Western Caribbean itineraries to be more sought after.

Royal Caribbean International is putting a new beach club on the map. The world’s largest cruise line has announced the expansion of its destination lineup with  Royal Beach Club Cozumel   in Mexico ,  opening in 2026 .

“We are delighted to build on our longstanding partnership with the local community and government to continue bringing our guests to Mexico,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group. “The expansion of our destination offerings aligns with the growing global demand for the ultimate vacation experiences and enables our guests to connect with the beauty of local cultures and people in the places they visit.”

“The anticipation for what’s next when it comes to Royal Caribbean destinations has only continued to build since we revealed Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in The Bahamas that opens in 2025. Now is the perfect time to announce the next iteration of this collection with Royal Beach Club Cozumel,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “Cozumel is an incredible destination, and the beach club will perfectly complement all the island has to offer as an experience that combines familiar Royal Caribbean touches with the spirit of Mexico, alongside amenities and activities for every type of vacationer.”

Featuring striking beaches, views and pools for every vibe, Royal Beach Club Cozumel will welcome vacationers to their ultimate beach day in Mexico, complete with Royal Caribbean’s signature attention to detail across the experience, service and design. Everyone can make memories with a combination of experiences that span from kicking back to adventuring across  swim-up bars ,  dedicated pools for relaxation enthusiasts and families ,  private cabanas ,  snorkeling ,  kayaking , and more. And for a taste of Mexico and quintessential beach day favorites, coming to the table will be a variety of dining spots like a  restaurant, bar and lounge   with views  – and flavors – for days and a  street market  as well as  hands-on experiences  like  tequila tastings  and  cooking classes .

The new beach club experience is the latest in the cruise line’s growing lineup of destinations, which includes the top-rated Perfect Day at CocoCay, The Bahamas, that set the bar for private islands after a $250 million transformation in 2019. From ongoing expansions to the island – like the newly opened adults-only Hideaway Beach – to Labadee, Haiti, and the Royal Beach Club Collection, Royal Caribbean has set the stage for vacationers to create their perfect vacation day in more ways than one in The Bahamas and the eastern and western Caribbean.

More details about Royal Beach Club Cozumel will be revealed in the coming months. The Royal Beach Club Collection also includes  Royal Beach Club Paradise Island , a 17-acre Bahamian beach experience located on Nassau’s Paradise Island, opening in 2025.
