Our Guide to Karijini with Kids Under 5

Thinking of doing Karijini with kids under 5, we did a nd it was one of the most amazing and challenging experiences we have had yet on our trip!

From the most picturesque free camp up on a cliff top, to swimming in the many swimming holes throughout Dales Gorge, taking the steps down to the beautiful Hammersley Gorge then off to tackle Hancock Gorge and Weano Gorge. It was 5 days that was exhilarating and challenging, it got us working together as a family and the kids have taught us to let them lead, trust their instincts and allow them time to figure out the challenges that lay ahead. We took it slow and allowed them the freedom to choose how much they want to do on their own and when they need our assistance. This is our story and guide to Karijini with kids and hopefully it inspires you to venture out to this amazing part of Australia.

We started our Karijini adventure spending a night at Albert Tognolini Free Camp found on Wiki Camps located not far from Karijini National Park. This was the perfect place to set-up and wind down after a day of driving, there was already a fire pit ready made, we collected some wood, lit a fire, toasted some marshmallows and took in the incredible views of our cliff side camp spot. Lucky for us there was plenty of room for the kids to play away from the cliff edge.

Dales Gorge

A 4km return trip through the Gorge and along the rim. We started at the Fortescue Falls carpark and walked down the stairs to be greeted by a stunning cascading waterfall known as Fortescue Falls. Taking some rock steps over the water we continued down the bottom of the Gorge until the end to the stunning sight of Circular Pool. Although the water is extremely cold it is worth the trek to sit down and have a bite to eat and a dip if you are game. Heading back there was a short trek to a steep decent to get to the top of the Gorge to complete the last 2km of the Rim Walk. It was a fairly easy walk to navigate, rocky in places and some rocks to climb over, getting down to Circular Pool is a bit of a steep decent but Ella managed to complete herself with little help from us, just at the end doing the rim walk Ryan carried her but she flourished with the challenging parts of the walk.

  • Take the walk to the right of Fortescue Falls and it will take you to Fern Pool, we didn’t realise at the time and ended up coming back in the morning to see Fern Pool.

Complete the Dales Gorge rim walk first as there is no shade, then make your way down to Circular Pool and complete the base walk to Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool

Hammersley Gorge and Tom Price Hammersley Gorge is 90km from Dales Campgrounds with 40km of corrugated dirt roads and when we arrived we were pleased to see that it was a short easy climb down to this picturesque sight. With plenty of room to put out a mat and have a picnic and  crystal clear water to cool off in this was a hit with our kids.

We stopped in at Tom Price for the afternoon on our way back to have a look at the town which is Western Australia’s highest town at 747m above sea level then headed back to our campgrounds for the night where Ryan did an Astronomy experience which was amazing value for money and a highlight for him.

We made the drive to our next stay at Karijini Eco Retreat. We chose to stay here for its close proximity to Weano Gorge and Hancock Gorge, two gorges that we had on our list to visit. The Eco Retreat is an environmentally friendly retreat in the pristine bushlands at Joffree Gorge. It really showcases the diverse landscape of Karijini which we instantly fell in love with when we first entered the National Park.

Hancock Gorge A class 5 walk we put Bodhi in our Kathmandu backpack and started this walk early. We scaled across rockwalls and navigated the rocky terrain to get to what is known as the ‘Spider Walk’, a skinny passage you climb through to be greeted with a stunning pool known as Kermits Pool. Although we did not go for a swim, the water is freezing, the adventure in was enough for us to leave feeling like we accomplished something challenging together as a family. Ella absolutely thrived on this walk scaling the rock walls with ease it was remarkable seeing her navigate these challenges herself and seeing her beaming with pride after was simply amazing.

karijini astro tour

Weano Gorge After driving back to our van for lunch we made our way back to complete Weano Gorge. Another Class 5 walk and this one there was no way around getting wet! Walking through water which went waist deep at times we took it nice and slow until we arrived at the Handrail Pool. Handrail Pool is a handrail you use to lower yourself down the cliff to the pool below. Ryan went first to see how it felt and he was happy so I strapped Ella on my back with our Lillebaby carrier and with Bodhi still in our Kathmandu carrier we completed the climb down to Handrail Pool. It was easier than we thought with the handrail being very grippy and step ledges have been put in to help you climb down. We found Weano Gorge to be the easy of the 2 gorges that we completed today. To finish our last night at Karijini Eco Retreat we enjoyed dinner at the restaurant and all went to bed early exhausted after the days effort.

Tips for Karijini with kids

Have reef shoes for everyone in the family with water to walk through and rocks to climb you need proper footwear to avoid slipping

Have carriers ready for the kids we have a Kathmandu backpack for Bodhi and I carried Ella in our Lillebaby carrier for the parts that she needed it

Have either a waterproof bag or use zip lock bags to waterproof your items as you will get wet, we found mainly just the bottoms of our bags got wet but it still gets in everywhere.

Bathers, we didn’t bring any towels as it was hot enough that we dried quickly.

Sunscreen, food and plenty of water is a must some of these places you will want to stay at for a little while to cool off and enjoy

First aid kit you never know what situations may happen always best to be prepared and it is one of the harder places to get help in if something goes wrong

Satellite Phone as there is no reception in the National Park

karijini astro tour

Lastly… Take your time and trust your kids, Ella is 3 almost 4 and she did a lot of these on her own she was tired and over them when we did Weano Gorge which we carried her for but the rest she completed herself. Trust your kids abilities, be there to support them but let them navigate their own way it’s rewarding seeing your young kids achieve this for themselves. Most importantly have fun enjoy Karijini it’s a beautiful place don’t feel like you have to complete them all, go there and see for yourself you will know your own capabilities. If you are not comfortable with a spot there is still plenty of easily accessible places to enjoy you won’t miss out.We loved Karijini and are really glad we did it and the kids really enjoyed the surroundings and challenging walks we plan to visit again in the future but for now we can relish in our memories of our adventures in Karijini. We will leave you with a video showing our time and the type of walks involved when visiting Karijini.

Best Astronomy experience ever

I have attended many talks on astrology, but never experienced one like this. Small business owner Phil Witt knows his stuff, and presents it in an entertaining way. He has set up within the Karijini National Park camp ground to provide campers with an absolutely breathtaking view of the heavens through his 3 massive telescopes. Add to this, facts and figures that will astound you. At $30pp for over 2 hours it is exceptional value, and I cannot reccomend him highly enough. I went back for a second night as I enjoyed it so much, but unfortunately the cloud came over and Phil called the night off. I would definitely go again, and reccomend you do yourself a favor, and look him up on your next visit to this wonderful national park.

Reply first posted May 7 2018, reposted due to site number change - mentioned in this updated response. Shame those clouds rolled in preventing you from attending another astro session Tim, with that said, just think of the money you saved..! I'm wrapped that you enjoyed your stargazing night enough, that you were willing to do the same again. Dales Campground is an extraordinary area to view the cosmos for a multitude of reasons. Pointing a telescope at the night sky within Karijini started back in 1997, a small compact 150mm number which served it's purpose well, nothing too flash though. In 2007, commencing at the newly opened Karijini Eco Campground, I invited folks to glimpse the cosmos through a 200mm diameter telescope, a small step up. From 2009 through to Twenty 15, REMTREK was in full swing with the big barrels of portable telescopes, and still based at the Eco Campground; unfortunately I was never too happy with the view of that spectacular dark sky you enjoyed so much. Late in 2015, I stumbled across site 100 (formerly marked 63) in the Tour Operators Loop, and did it knock me for a six..!!! A perfect 360 degree view of the distant horizon allowing for a truly sensational panorama of the cosmos - the ultimate outdoor "planetarium", billiard table flat viewing area, night silhouette of the distant Dales hills, soft sound of the nearby cascading Fortescue Falls, very welcoming layout of the Dales area, great management by park rangers, and super helpful camp hosts. Put all of this together, and anyone presenting the night sky here cannot go wrong! So as you have discovered firsthand Tim, with all of these factors collectively working together, you have a truly magical place for an astronomy night..!! "Greatly appreciate your review Tim" Phill :)

Phil's knowledge was second to none, I have been to other W.A. astronomical evenings but this was the best yet. Easily understood explanations with some fun included, and a Milky Way bar at the end. Cannot recommend enough.

Location location location Trev! As you discovered on the night of your astro session, the Dales Gorge Campground site from where I run my astro tour is simply spectacular, what a view of the heavens above!!! Well, the secret is out now folks, haha; a Milky Way chocolate bar awaits. Phill :)

My first experience with the stars and I will never forget it. We had the chance to observe the stars, planets and the moon using two telescopes. We were also able to take a picture of the moon with our phones. Stunning experience with a great guide! ✨

karijini astro tour

The incredible outback aussie night sky sure does have quite the impact Delphine, so glad you enjoyed your first experience peering deep into the cosmos through telescopes, so many spectacular hidden celestrial gems to discover..! Photographing that amazing lunar surface on our mobile phones really is quite something, always fun to visit the pics from time to time to rediscover that brilliant moonscape! Phill :)

We had a great time experiencing the wonders of the milky way! We spent every night for the rest of our holiday pointing out all the stars that we diacovered! Well worth it! A little bit hard to organise getting on with the lack of reception in the National Park but we just winged it by driving over to Dales Camp Site from the Eco Resort and we were warmly welcomed despite not booking. Definitely worth it! Loved it.

Immersing yourself within the Milky Way sure is an awesome way to spend a few hours out at the Dales Campground Russell, so glad to read that you enjoyed the experience! Despite the lengthy return trip from the Eco Retreat, brilliant that you still consider the journey worthwhile to take in my astro night. I don't encourage folks to drive over from the Eco simply to do my astro owing to the hazards that present themselves on the return night journey, but certainly appreciate your willingness to have done so and your very positive review! "Thanks again" Phill :)

Please, for your own good, do not overlook this 2 hour mind-blower of a tour. I'm not really into astronomy, but after Phil's incredibly informative and entertaining session, I really feel like I should learn more about the universe that we're a part of. Just go, no point in spoiling what he will teach you. Best $30 I ever spent

Great to see that you enjoyed your night out under the stars at the Dales Campground Maximil86, so much to take in through the telescopes; an absolute astronomical feast of cosmic wonders above in those clear outback Aussie night skies! Also great to see that you considered the two hour astro session well worth the 30 bucks!! "Thanks for the feedback" Phill :)

Do not miss out on this. Phil takes you for a journey through the stars and is very passionate about doing so. Gives you lots of information about stars and outer space. $30 for adults, $20 for kids money well spent. Goes for 2+ hours. Doesn't operate on nights with a full moon due to poor visibility.

karijini astro tour

Yep, that full moon is a little too dazzling for an astro night. Very glad to see you enjoyed your astro night out at Dales Campground Ryan, site 100 offers stargazers like yourself such a brilliant view of that cosmic canopy above. ''Thanks for your review Ryan, appreciate it'' Phill :)

Hervorragend. Everything You Need To Know About This Year’s Spectacular Karijini Experience

By Morgan Reardon 15th Mar 2024

  • X Post (Twitter)

Aboriginal dancers at night in a ceremonial dance in Karijini.

There is truly no better way to experience the magic of Country, than a visit to this year’s Karijini Experience . Spanning four incredible days —running from 4 to 7 April—this celebration of culture, art, food and music is absolutely one to tick off your bucket list.

Not familiar with this epic event? Taking place in the breathtakingly beautiful Karijini National Park, the festival was created to connect people with the land and to learn about the region’s Traditional Owners, the Banjima People, through goosebump-inducing immersive experiences. Think, a diverse and inclusive program featuring events like fine dining under a blanket of stars, live music performances from renowned Indigenous artists, storytelling gatherings and workshops, all set against a backdrop of red dirt, rugged rose-hued gorges and fern-lined swimming holes.

Sounds dreamy right? Here’s everything you need to know to plan your visit, from how to get there, where to stay and what you simply can’t miss.

Person placing product on table

How To Get There

To experience the pure magic of Karijini, nestled in the Pilbara region, you’ll first need to decide on your mode of transport to Western Australia’s second-largest national park.

We’re big fans of a road trip—snacks, Taylor Swift on repeat, and incredible views along the way, what’s not to love? Located approximately 1,400km north of Perth, you can get to Karijini, via Miners Pathway up the Great Northern Highway in about 14 hours. Along the way though, you’ll want to break up the cruise with stops in the historic towns of New Norcia, Mt Magnet and Cue. Refuel (you and your wheels) in Newman, which is about 278 km out of Karijini. You can rest your head here for the night, or just stay a little while. Pro tip, check out the Martumilli Arts Centre.

If you prefer your roadie with a side of incredible coastal views, we recommend heading to Karijini via Exmouth on the Ningaloo coast. The drive is around 1250 km long, with loads of beautiful places to stop and appreciate, including Shark Bay and Monkey Mia.

Keep In Mind

The nearest fuel station is in Tom Price, around 100km from the Visitors Centre, and while the road there and to Dales Gorge are sealed (and are 2WD accessible), all other roads in Karijini remain unsealed so it’s recommended you drive slowly. There is also a $17 entry fee per standard vehicle to the park. You can buy a pass at the entrance of the park or online.

If you’re short on time, a flight might be more your speed. Jet from Perth to Paraburdoo Airport in just under two hours, before picking up a hire car and driving the remaining 120 km to Karijini National Park. Or fly direct from Perth to Newman Airport in an hour and 45 minutes, and then road trip the remaining 263km to Karijini.

Events

People around dining tables outdoors

When we say this year’s program is the best yet, we’re not exaggerating. We’re talking free and ticketed experiences that you’ll yarn to mates about for years to come. What sets this festival apart from so many others is the strong connection and collaboration the Banjima People have in each offering at Karjini Experience—in fact, in 2022 the event was passed over to the Banjima Native Title Aboriginal Corporation (BNTAC) as the representatives of the traditional owners of the land.

Toured Walks

While you’re going to want to squeeze in as many things as possible during your visit, a nonnegotiable is Toured Walks . Running Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you’ll begin at the Karijini Visitor Centre and traverse the stunning terrain of the surrounding National Park, learning about country, native language and bush medicine from the world’s oldest living culture.

Fervor's Karijini Dining Experience

Made for the ‘gram, you’ll probably pinch yourself when pulling up a chair at the Fervor's Dining Experience . Taking place under the stars on Friday and Saturday, you’ll indulge in a feast of native ingredients, soundtracked by the national park’s wildlife.

Yurlu Lounge

On Sunday, head to Yurlu Lounge , where you’ll feel the goosebumps wash over you when a slew of incredible Indigenous performers take to the stage, a neon-streaked sunset behind them. While this year’s roster hasn’t been released just yet, if last year’s offering was anything to go by (J-Milla and Emily Wurramara), this year’s lineup will be banging.

Where To Stay

From budget to boujee, there’s an accommodation option for you, no matter your bank balance.

Karijini Eco Retreat

Glamp in the outback in style at Karijini Eco Retreat in one of their luxury safari-style eco tents. Furnished in natural wood and local Aboriginal artwork, you can relax after a big day at the festival inside your air-conditioned pad, complete with a modern bathroom, cloud-like king bed, private deck, and uninterrupted views of the bushland. They also offer quad tents for groups and have a delicious on-site restaurant that is open to the public.

Dales Campground

This popular spot (seriously, it books out months in advance so get in early to avoid disappointment), is a great place to base yourself for the festival just 10 km away. From just $15 per adult per night, it's a bargain too. Close to Fern Pools and Fortescue Falls, the site has toilet and BBQ facilities, but no water so remember to BYO.

Auski Tourist Village & Roadhouse

With both powered campsites and hotel accommodations available (double rooms with en suite), there’s something for every budget at Auski Tourist Village & Roadhouse . Nestled between Newman and Port Hedland, Auski is about 65km from the festival (about a half-hour drive) with an onsite restaurant and roadhouse to load up on snacks at.

Tom Price Tourist Park

Just 100 km from the festival site, located at the base of Jarndunmunha, Tom Price Tourist Park boasts powered campsites, cabins and chalets—plus there’s an onsite pool to cool off at after a long day.

Come for the event, stay for the once-in-a-lifetime natural experience. Post-festival, book a few days extra annual leave to really soak up the incredible landscape that is Karijini.

Traverse Punurrunha (Mount Bruce), WA’s second highest mountain (1,234 metres) for sweeping views over the rugged landscape below. Another worthy hike for your must-do list is through the Weano Recreation Area . There’s a handful of options here but we love Hancock Gorge , which will have you twisting and turning through burnt orange gorges before opening up to a natural pool. If you’re after less of a calf burn but still crave beautiful vistas, then opt for the Gorge Rim track . Just two km long, take in fern-lined trails, clusters of wildflowers and finish at Fortescue Falls.

Cool off in one of the dreamiest natural swimming holes you’ll ever throw a towel down at with a swim in Fern Pool , framed by a cascading waterfall. Another worthy spot for a dip is Hamersley Gorge , where swirls of perfectly carved rock faces give way to a tranquil pool of azure blue water.

Finally, finish up with a mind-blowing star gazing tour at Remtrek Astronomy . Located at Dales Campground, check out their three telescopes to view deep into space. With sprawling clear skies, it’s a truly amazing experience.

Come join us for an Adventure of a Lifetime, and delve deep into the depths of the ancient Karijini Landscape. Thi s majestic and rugged landscape, steeped in indigenous history, is located in the remote Pilbara Region of Western Australia, and harbours unique geological formations, flora and fauna found nowhere else on the planet. The canyons we will be travelling through have been carved out by water over millions of years and expose some of the oldest rocks and fossils on earth. This  fragile environment undergoes dramatic changes each wet season, as vast volumes of water cascade through the canyons. Be one of the few that have done all 5 parts of the class 6 restricted canyons back to back, add to this parts of 4 non restricted canyons of spectacular beauty and a Mount Bruce Summit Hike, stunning red earth punctuated by yellows and greens, turquoise waters and magnificent sunsets and sunrises, and you have yourself a once in a lifetime adventure.

Both the above dates would need to meet minimum number requirements to proceed. This can either be in the form of an entire party, comprising of you and your family/friends, OR a party made of individuals or smaller groups. We need at least 6 people per trip, to make this adventure happen, and can take up to 10 people each trip.  This trip is open to anyone, even if you have not been on an adventure with us, or have no previous abseiling experience, so you can invite your family and/or friends who have as yet not joined us. The minimum age is 14, unless this person can convince me that they are capable of the trip, which can be decided on the training day. There is no maximum age (the oldest person we have taken through Karijini to date is 84). You do need a relatively good level of fitness for this trip. Please contact us if you have any doubts about your level of fitness. Everyone coming on this trip would need to come out for a full day of abseil  with us (even if you have done an abseil session with us already). This training day is included in the price.  If on the training day it turns out that either we feel, or you feel, that this is not for you, a full refund will be issued, minus $250 for the training day & administration fees.  The trip would be comprised of 5 canyons/gorges with 4 of these being in part restricted class 6, Red Gorge being entirely class 6,  and a Mount Bruce Summit Hike, as listed in the order below. The entire trip would be over 5 days.  FUN FACT: Canyon & Gorge are interchangeable, both meaning formed by water erosion over time. To travel through either is called Canyoning ;)

TOUR ITINERARY

This itinerary may vary slightly depending on environmental circumstances, client needs, park closures and/or road conditions.

Training Day: Mountain Quarry Boya   - 2nd March 2024

As part of this tour and to prepare each participant, a full training in perth prior to the tour departure is included. during this session, we will learn to abseil  and via ferrata.  this day will be fully catered..

DAY 1. Travel & Arrive

The first day would be comprised of a flight from Perth to Paraburdoo Airport , we drive approximately 1.5 hours to the Karijini Eco Retreat to settle into our accomodation and get ready for dinner. Over dinner we will provide a comprehensive briefing of the adventures ahead.

If you are driving, we will meet you at the Karijini Eco Retreat . DAY 2. Weano Descent

We enter this stunning gorge and journey to Handrail Pool, using our tubes and hand paddles, to paddle to the entrance of Jade Pool (aptly named due to its jade coloured water). This is the entrance to the class 6 part of this gorge. We then via ferrata along an edge above Jade Pool and travel to the Amphitheatre for morning tea. We will then hook in for the 45m Waterfall descent!!! This awesome waterfall plunges deep into the heart of Karijini. Once at the bottom we will break for lunch. We then paddle across Junction Pool, where we exit via the Centre of the Earth, up the Chute with a hand line, and climb out on ropes (approximately 10m) on to a ledge overlooking the stunning Jimmy Regan's Pool. We then via ferrata along the ledge to Kermit's Pool, to exit via the Spider Walk and the rest of Hancock Gorge. DAY 3. Joffre Journey

This stunning gorge is only operated by us, and we believe it is the hidden jewel of Karijini ;) It is the longest trip we will do, and requires the whole day 0800-1700 to complete. We walk into the gorge from the Eco Retreat, from class 2 to a water jump into class 6, and spend the day paddling our tubes for the entire length of this amazing gorge, which includes waterfalls, beautiful red banded ironstone walls up to 100m high, turquoise crystal clear waters, wildlife, serenity and the ancient ambiance that is Karijini. We will stop at the base of Enchanted Gorge Waterfall for lunch. We then exit the same way we did the previous day, via Junction Pool, Centre of the Earth, and Hancock Gorge. This is a full day and you will be one of the very few that have done this amazing adventure ;) DAY 4. Red Gorge Adventure This will complete the class 6 canyon part of our Karijini Adventure, with an awesome water slide into Knox Gorge, followed by a small abseil (approx. 8m) into Red Gorge, where we will spend most of the day paddling the entire length of the gorge to Junction Pool, having lunch along the way at the base of Weano Waterfall, and exit the same way as the other two trips...which is a view we don't believe you will tire of ;) We will also have a quick look around the corner up Wittenoom Gorge, which is a multi-day Canyoning, Bushwalking & Camping trip we are working on. This might entice you to join us in the future ;) DAY 5. Mount Bruce Hike, & Return to Perth On the last day we will hike to the summit summit of Mount Bruce. This will afford us an awesome panoramic view of the Park and the Pilbara landscape. We will have a packed breakfast for this trip, as we will depart before sunrise and have breakfast on the summit.

Following our hike, we will depart Mount Bruce and drive to Paraburdoo to catch our flight back to Perth.

TESTIMONIALS

Karijini Tours

“There are no words to describe the beauty of the gorges. Canyoning through the Class 6 gorges was the adventure of a lifetime! Sven’s customer service was fast and clear and he was very helpful when I needed advice regarding the trip to Karijini.

I’m not a lover of deep water, but Sven and other group members were supportive and great fun to be with.

Sven really helped me to feel safe throughout the whole trip.”

Karijini Tours

“Going on tour with Spacechameleon is definitely the way to immerse in the true beauty and rawness of Karijini.

Having Sven and Andreas as our experienced guides allowed us to enter the restricted areas of the gorges not seen by most, providing our group with our own private hidden paradise to explore over the 3 days of canyoning.

Sven and Andreas made the group feel comfortable and safe at all times, whilst providing a unique and adventure filled experience. I wouldn't have seen even a quarter of what we got to experience in Karijini if I'd gone by myself, and it was well worth joining this tour. Would definitely recommend.”

"10/10 - Karijini Adventure Trip.

An experience of a lifetime. Wow wow wow! What an incredible trip with amazing guides. I could not fault this trip one bit. I had the best experience right from the time of booking this trip. Sven was friendly, helpful and easy to get a long with. The abseiling training day was fantastic and gave you a chance to meet the other incredible guides and some of the group in your trip. Arriving in Karijini we were met with infectious smiles Sven and Andreas who delivered a great briefing of what we were to experience over the coming days, and boy they did not disappoint. Everything from the safety to the food and company was spot on. I was in total awe of the beauty that is Karijini and to be able to experience the class 6 gorges, abseil down a waterfall and go down a waterfall slide was just next level. This trip surpassed my expectations. I highly recommend this trip to anyone looking for a bit of adventure and an experience of a lifetime. I can't wait to go back again with the crew!"

At the time of creating this tour we based departure dates around scheduled flights. Unfortunately schedule changes with airlines are a possibility. TRAIL NOTES : Hamersley Gorge Walk 1km, 3 hours return. Moderate to Difficult Grade.

TERRAIN:  There’s a short descent into the gorge. Expect some rock-hopping and uneven ground but a well formed trail.

Our guides will collect you from the airport and drive 1.5 hours directly to Karijini National Park. Our aim, over the next few days, is to get you straight to the best sites Karijini National Park has to offer with its narrow red-rock gorges, swimming holes and classic Pilbara scenery. Upon arrival at Paraburdoo Airport, we drive 1 ½ hours to Karijini National Park and head straight to the awe-inspiring Hamersley Gorge. Your walk today takes in the contrasting ecosystems of the Pilbara, as we descend from the dry plains into the cool, shady greenness of the gorge where you will marvel at the contrasts between the red rock, lush ferns and the clear pools hidden below. This is a dramatic gorge, full of colour texture and reflections and a great spot for a swim. There are several lookouts giving spectacular views of the Karijini gorge system. After a glorious day exploring you check into your luxury glamping accommodation at the Karijini Eco Retreat which will be home for the next three nights. Then, enjoy a fabulous dinner with wine at Alfresco Restaurant while watching tonight’s rich, colourful, long-burn sunset typical of outback Western Australia

7 Day Karijini National Park & Ningaloo Reef

TRAIL NOTES:  Dale Gorge and Knox Gorge Walks – 5.4km, 5 hours. Moderate to Difficult Grade.

WALK ITINERARY:  After a hearty breakfast our guides take you on a series of short but challenging walks today as you explore Dale Gorge and Knox Gorge. Today you will witness how the power of water has shaped Karijini. There are impressive waterfalls, and deep, cold pools as well as spectacular lookouts. This morning we’ll walk into Fortescue Falls (approx 1.5hrs), enjoying various breaks along the way with optional swimming before walking to Fern Pool. We’ll then transfer to Know Gorge. This is an ancient part of our Earth where the slow but impressive process of erosion has carved out a unique landscape from rocks that are more than 2,000 million years old. Afterwards we return to our accommodation for relaxation followed by dinner served with wine.

7 Day Karijini National Park & Ningaloo Reef

TRAIL NOTES:  Mt Bruce Walk – 9km, 6 hours. Difficult Grade.

WALK ITINERARY:  You will rise above it all today, for spectacular views across the Spinifex-clad Pilbara landscape. You will climb to the summit of Mt Bruce, Western Australia’s second-highest peak, at 1,234 metres above sea level. The Aboriginal name for Mount Bruce is Punurrunha and while the summit trail has some steep and rocky sections many walkers regard this as one of the finest and most exciting mountain walks in Western Australia. It is also a great chance to see some of Western Australia’s unique wildlife including the Pebble Mound Mouse and Rothschild’s Rock Wallaby. We will all walk halfway up Mt Bruce, at this point those who wish to continue to the submit to enjoy a lunch with a view with continue with one guide, while the rest of the group descends the mountain to enjoy lunch back at the Eco-Retreat.  Option to go to Joffre Gorge for a swim. WALK ITINERARY: Another day of strapping on your boots and heading out to explore two of Karijini’s finest and most famous gorges – Hancock and Weano. The walks are challenging in places, with some wading through water and clambering over rock ledges, but these are not difficult walks and the gorges are truly amazing. At times, the gorge walls are just an arms-length apart and the rich red colour and banding of the rock is simply breathtaking. You will discover beautiful jade pools nestled deep within the gorge complex, including the famous Handrail Pool. These walks are a photographer’s paradise.   After this fabulous finale, you will leave Karijini and drive 3 hours to our accommodation at Cheela Plains Station, a family-owned and managed cattle station located in the semi-arid, pastoral rangelands of the Pilbara with a unique environmentally-centred grazing system. If time permits we can visit a local waterhole, Munderie Springs which is on the property in the late afternoon for a quick dip . Tonight we’ll enjoy traditional country hospitality and a fabulous home-cooked meal with wine.

7 Day Karijini National Park & Ningaloo Reef

ITINERARY: After a hearty country breakfast, today we head west towards Exmouth. As Western Australia is a big state it will take you much of the day to drive to the coast but there is plenty to see along the way, particularly Western Australia’s famous wildflowers. While wildflowers vary in abundance with the seasons, and from year to year, there is always something interesting and colourful in flower and this section of road is renowned for its swathes of purple Ashburton pea, yellow flowering sennas (cassias) and acacias, purple mulla mullas and the iconic Sturt’s Desert Pea. On route, we will also visit the spectacular Charles Knife Canyon and stretch our legs whilst taking in the magnificent views.  After a late lunch, we then continue on to your accommodation at Exmouth Escape Resort in Exmouth, where you will be staying for the next two nights. Tonight you enjoy dinner at the onsite Whalers Restaurant which prides itself on fresh, honest flavours and sources the finest local seafood, steaks and produce. Served with wine.

7 Day Karijini National Park & Ningaloo Reef

ITINERARY: After breakfast, the guides will transfer you to today’s activity –  Swim with the gentle Whale Sharks For adventure-lovers and nature-lovers, nothing compares to the exhilaration of swimming with the gentle giants of Ningaloo Reef – the whale sharks. The World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef is one of the largest, most reliable and best-managed whale shark aggregations in the world. An estimated 300-500 whale sharks make their way to Ningaloo annually between March and August. Mark Norek Lifes An Adventure MD said…  “However, this is only a rule of thumb and when we did the tour in September we did swim with the whale shark. The crew did say they do also look for Humpback whales and Manta Rays. On the tour we saw all three marine animals. End of the day you can be not so lucky, but the tour was amazing and the Coral alone was well worth the day out let alone swimming with Whale sharks- It was the best day tour I have ever done!”

After our day’s activities, all guests return to our accommodation at Exmouth Escape Resort with the remainder of the day at leisure. Tonight enjoy dinner in the restaurant served with wine while you talk about our day’s adventures.

7 Day Karijini National Park & Ningaloo Reef

Day 2 - Kalamina Gorge, Karijini Visitors Centre and Dales Gorge

Day 3 - Mt Bruce

Mt Bruce is Western Australia's second highest peak. The Mt Bruce walk trail is a fantastic ridge walk, with some steep and rocky sections along the route. From one side you'll have the vista of Karijini Range; from the other an iron ore mine! The 9.5 km return walk will take us most of the day and is definitely worth the effort.

Day 3 - Mt Bruce

Day 4 - Hancock and Weano Gorge

We'll explore two of the most iconic gorges in Karijini - Hancock and Weano. The walks are challenging in places, but not difficult. Both involve some wading and clambering on rocks and ledges; and both reward us with fantastic jade pools nestled deep within the narrow gorge walls. Highlights include the Spider Walk and Kermits Pool.

Day 4 - Hancock and Weano Gorge

Day 5 - Walk up Mt Nameless, drive to Cheela Plains (via Tom Price)

This morning you will say farewell to Karijini and begin your journey to the West Coast. The rocky peak of Mt Nameless (Jarndunmunha) dominates the landscape as you drive towards Tom Price. We will follow the trail, along the ridge line to the top of this significant mountain. This is a 4.5km, class 4 return walk with some challenging sections but rewarding views!

For those after an alternative to hiking Mt Nameless, there is a mine site tour which leaves from the visitors centre or you may wish to spend the morning relaxing in the township of Tom Price at a local cafe.

In the afternoon we depart Tom Price for Cheela Plains, a true outback station stay where you will enjoy a delicious meal under the spectacular desert night sky!

Accommodation: Cheela Plains Station Stay (or similar)

Day 5 - Walk up Mt Nameless, drive to Cheela Plains (via Tom Price)

Day 6 - Drive to Exmouth

Time to rest the legs on a travel day. Western Australia is a big place so it will take us much of the day to get across to Exmouth. There will be plenty of rest stops to stretch your legs.

We will arrive with time to watch the sun set into the Indian Ocean.

Accommodation: Yardie Homestead Caravan Park (or similar)

Day 6 - Drive to Exmouth

Day 7 - Optional Whale shark or Glass Bottom Boat Tour

Day 7 - Optional Whale shark or Glass Bottom Boat Tour

Day 8 - Yardie creek walk and snorkel Turquoise Bay

Today we will explore Cape Range national park, with a series of short walks, snorkelling and swiming along the coast.

Spot rock wallabies and an incredible array of sea life on this wonderful day. We will explore Mandu Mandu gorge and Yardie Creek gorge then to Turquoise Bay along Ningaloo Reef for a swim and snorkel. Your guides will create you a delicious dinner to enjoy when we get back to camp.

Day 8 - Yardie creek walk and snorkel Turquoise Bay

Day 9 - Charles knife canyon lookout

Having experienced Ningaloo from the water, today we will spend a bit more time on dry land. There are plenty of walk trails though this area portraying the interesting limestone karst and spinifex country.

Compared to some of our exploits in Karijini these trails are relatively easy. The heat can definitely be a factor though, so we may have to augment today's itinerary if this is the case.

That said, after exploring the Charles Knife Canyon, we will head back to the blue waters of Ningaloo for another opportunity to swim. Hopefully we will spot a turtle!

After another full day of exploring, we will head back to camp for the last night.

Day 9 - Charles knife canyon lookout

Day 10 - Departure Day

Our last day!

After breakfast you will be transferred to either Exmouth town (drop off: Visitors Ningaloo Centre - 9:30AM) or Learmonth Airport for an approximate time of 10:15-10:30AM.

Due to guides relocating the vehicle to Tom Price on this day, we can only provide the one transfer as listed above.

Note : Should Qantas reschedule their flight to require an earlier arrival than 10.30AM, we will move this departure transfer to provide adequate airport check in time.

Please read the' Getting to and From Trip' information in the Trip FAQ document.

Important Notes

  • This is a camping tour with lots of comfort. (As we like to say it’s a camping tour for non campers!) Each person will have the use of their own semi permanent tent and a comfy camping bed. Even if you are travelling with a friend or a significant other you will have access to your own tent or you are more than welcome to share. You will need to bring a pillow and sleeping bag or you can hire a sleeping bag from us for $67 (to cover dry cleaning at the end of the tour).
  • Start & End Times:  The trip begins at Paraburdoo Airport on day 1. For pick up times for the different days of the week please read the joining point instructions carefully. The trip finishes finishes with a transfer to Exmouth or Exmouth Airport on the last day.
  • Optional Whale Shark Tour:  We highly recommend you swim with the whale sharks, it is an amazing experience. It is not included in the tour price, guests will need to advise us well ahead of time if you would like to add this option as this experience books out each year. Please also note that whale sharks visit the region between mid-March and mid-September only.
  • Fitness: All walks are less than 10 km but each has its challenges. The terrain is rocky and there is a lot of ascending and descending – both for the peaks and the gorge walks. A reasonable level of fitness, mobility and balance is required to fully enjoy the trip.
  • Flights: Upon booking we will let you know which flight into Paraburdoo you will need to book onto. Due to flight availability the itinerary may change slightly.  On some departures guests will stay the first night in Tom Price and then head into Karijini National Park the following day. All departure dates will still go to all the same gorges and sights.
  • Last Day of Tour: Our tour team will drop guests into the township of Exmouth (Ningaloo Centre) for an estimated arrival time of approx. 09.30am. For those that wish we will continue to the airport for an estimated arrival time of approx. 10.15am -10.30am. For those that are dropped off in the town of Exmouth and have an afternoon flight you can book an airport transfer with www.exmouthbuscharters.com.au . They work their transfer around flight departures and costs currently are approx. $40 per adult.
  • In the event of unforeseeable circumstances that require a modification to the itinerary or accommodation, we will make every effort to provide a suitable alternative.

About Walking Tours In General

How hard are the walks.

The difficulty of the walks ranges from tour to tour, from easy to challenging. We design all of our walking tours to be achievable for those with a moderate level of fitness. We do recommend doing some training before most tours, because physical activity is always more enjoyable if you are physically prepared. We will send you information about how to train when you book.

When on tour we find that a positive mental attitude is most important and that if you focus on the scenery, the company and the moment, and not on the kilometres, then you find yourself reaching your destination with little problem. You can always have a day or sometimes an afternoon off to relax if you feel like it. If you have any concerns about your fitness or ability to complete a walk, give us a call or send us an email and we can talk you through it.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General

Do I have to twin-share accommodation? Can I have my own room?

Our tour prices are based on rooms being twin share (two single beds in one room) or double (one double/queen bed in a room, shared by a couple). If you are travelling alone, we will place you in a room with someone of the same gender. If you have opted for a single supplement, this means you will have your own room but we won’t always be able to guarantee your own bathroom and king/queen bed due to the types of accommodation we use for group bookings. Often we stay at 2 or 3 bedroom chalets so that we can cook and have a common area for the group to relax and mingle at the end of your days walk. If having your own bathroom is important, give us a ring and we will see if it is possible.

Will I hold up the group if I’m a slow walker?

We find a lot of people who haven’t been on a walking tour before worry about this, but it’s rarely an issue. We keep a comfortable steady pace with plenty of opportunities to rest and take in the scenery along the way. Usually the group will spread out over a couple of hundred metres as we walk.

Normal walking pace on a formed surface like a road or footpath is around 4.5 – 6 km per hour and we tend to average just over 3 km per hour on bush tracks. It’s not a stroll but it’s not a brisk walk either. If you feel you may be slower than this, try some longer training walks to increase your walking fitness.

What is the average age of Inspiration Outdoors’ guests?

About 80% of our walkers are aged between 45 – 75, but we welcome all adults on our tours. We get a roughly 60/40 female to male split.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General , Day Walk FAQs

What’s the food like? Can you cater for my dietary needs?

We serve simple, nutritious and delicious food on tour prepared by our guides, using fresh and local ingredients as much as possible. Sometimes we also eat out at restaurants. Breakfast, morning tea, lunch, fresh fruit, pre-dinner nibbles and a two course evening meal are all included. We are happy to adapt our menu to suit many dietary needs including gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets – please ask when you book.

Are your walking tours just for “bushwalkers”?

Our walks are for anyone who enjoys walking and nature – bushwalkers or not. Our walks are conducted in safe, supportive and fun environments and you don’t need specialised equipment or experience to undertake them. We give you information about what you will need to bring and how you should prepare for each tour and we’re always here to answer any questions or concerns.

Do I have to walk every day on tour?

Of course not – it’s your holiday and you should do what you feel! Relax at the accommodation, come for a drive, get dropped off in town or go for a stroll of your own. On some days there is also the opportunity to walk for part of the day. This last option depends on whether there is vehicle access to the track.

What do I have to carry when I walk?

Very little. A water bladder or bottles, lunch/snacks/fruit for the day. a rain jacket, some personal first aid supplies and, on some days, lunch. You will probably want a camera as well. We return to accommodation each evening so there is no need to carry a large backpack.

Not sure if this is the right tour for you?

At Inspiration Outdoors, we understand that choosing the right tour can be a difficult decision. That’s why we’re here to help make the process as smooth as possible. If you still have questions, give us a call or drop us a line. Whether it’s a question about the tour itinerary or your fitness level, our customer care team is ready to answer it. We have product specialists for every tour who are eager to share their knowledge and help you plan your next adventure.

The comfortable 4WD bus will then take us to Hammersley Gorge and the world renown, Spa Pool. Deep in the heart of the Pilbara, the rock formation is as old as time itself. The Spa Pool is an ice blue pond which is fed by a stunning waterfall. Hamersley gorge is lined by rock walls that change from grey to red depending on the light and time of day. This is an unfiltered West Coast immersion. Certain nights will be spent camping in twin-share tents at camping grounds. While simplicity is embraced, it adds to the thrill.

The Sweet Wanderlust

Karijini tour for the budget-conscious and adventurous traveler

By: Author Brittany

Posted on Last updated: May 7, 2018

Remember the good old days? You know the ones… you played outside until dark, jumping in puddles, basking in the sun, going on adventures and spending time with friends until it was time to go inside for dinner. In those days, your allowance stretched as far as it needed to, purchasing things that brought delight instead of necessities (i.e. you could always afford to buy something from the ice cream man).

Pete West has created a Karijni Old Skool experience to bring you back to the carefree days of your youth at a price that’s sure to put a smile on your face. The Flying Sandgroper’s Old Skool Karijini tour is a two day, two night adventure designed for budget-conscious travelers and backpackers who are fit, active and ready to have the time of their lives. Throughout the entire tour, the other guests and I kept saying we were so glad we joined The Flying Sandgroper’s tour. Read on for 7 reasons I loved this tour and I know you will too.

Access to Karijini if you don’t own a 4WD

Before finding The Flying Sandgroper, I thought I’d need to be content with hearing stories of Karijini from fellow travelers and seeing photos on Instagram. Karijini is most easily accessed by a 4WD and rental car companies forbid travel into the area since the roads are so rough.

Karijini roads

The Flying Sandgroper has a special 4WD bus that’s equipped to take you through the bumpy roads. And flashpackers, don’t fear! It’s also equipped with USB ports to charge your techie gear.

The Old Skool Karijini tour is timed to allow travelers without a car to venture north on the Integrity Bus on a Monday night and continue on to Broome at the conclusion of the tour on Wednesday evening. Integrity Coach Lines offers a Perth to Broome hopper pass for $395 that’s good for 12 months. I found this a safe and easy way to get to Karijini and on to Broome.

Driving a campervan or a rental? Only able to join the tour for one day? This tour can accommodate you, too!

Awesome Karijini tour guides

I booked my trip through owner, Pete West, who was helpful throughout the entire process. He helped me plan my bus trip and calmed my last minute fears of not having my own sleeping bag (they can provide one). His passion for the area and welcoming travelers is evident in every aspect of the tour he created.

The national park is over 2,400 mi², so there’s no way to see it all. With a great guide, though, we were able to see four different gorges and swim in several refreshing (read:cold) pools. Left to my own devices, I’d probably still be in the first gorge, taking my 1,000th photo and missing out on even better spots! Our guide for the two day trip, Brent Pike, was enthusiastic and full of interesting information, encouraging us to enjoy the moment while getting us excited for the next spot. His knowledge of the area and its history made the beautiful gorges even more gorge-ous (get it?).

Nature! Poisonous Nature!

Despite its fairytale-esque beauty, Karijini can be a dangerous place.  We traversed slippery water crossings, clambered down Class 5 trails and even spotted a brown snake crossing out path. To quote the Australian mom after we warned her about the brown snake ahead on the path, “Nature! Poisonous nature!”  Slips, falls and wildlife pose a threat, so it’s always best to go with someone who knows the area and has access to emergency communication… just in case. Keep your eyes open and always listen to your guide and you’re sure to have the very best time.

Brown Snake Karijini

Walk amongst ancient history

Western Australia’s second largest national park is home to the oldest exposed rock in the world. Walk amongst stones 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 years old, which were pushed out of the seabed to create the gorgeous gorges we have today.

Karijini Flying Sandgroper Tour

Ever heard of a Stromatolite? A fossil of the earliest life form on the planet is visible on a walk through Dale’s Gorge. Dinosaur fossils have nothing on a stromatolite!

Stromatolite Karijini

Slip into Fern Pool, a former aboriginal birthing pool. It’s a special, sacred place to the indigenous people, and should be treated as such. Without our guide, we would have been one of those oblivious tourists, cannon-balling into the no-splash zone. Approaching this historically and culturally significant site with reverence made the experience even more powerful.

Amazing swimming pools

If Disney were to dream up a paradise-themed water park, they couldn’t improve on the natural formations of Karijini. Rock waterfalls? Check! Thick flora to create a shaded area? Check! Sunny beach for sunbathing or drying off? Check! Unreal shades of blue and green water? Yep.. got that too!

Karijini gorge

One of the guests in our group kept asking whether the features were natural or man-made… She just couldn’t believe a place could be this perfect. Be prepared for two full days of feeling awestruck.

Karijini Hancock Gorge

The Flying Sandgroper website claims that eating good is high on their agenda. Y’all know I am a girl who loves my food, so I was anxious to discover what they had in store for us. Breakfasts of pancakes, porridge, and yogurt parfaits were a perfect way to get our energy up before an action-packed day.

Flying Sandgroper breakfast

Dinner was a spaghetti bolognese packed with tons of fresh veggies. By the end, we were so full we could hardly move. Between the filling meal and the action-packed day, we all slept soundly that night.

Everyone on the tour helps with set up, cooking and cleaning. Bond with your fellow travelers and build a little team spirit over the suds of dishes!

Camping for non-campers

I stayed in a tent all by myself for the first time in my life on this tour. So it would be correct to say I’m not much of a camping kind of girl… but this was just one step down from glamping. My tent was tall enough to stand up in and the sleeping bags were laid out on a cot, so no uncomfortable rocks digging into my back. Plus, there was enough room for my explosion of stuff, which is practically a miracle.

Flying Sandgroper camping

All of this came together for a perfect getaway to Karijini. I’m already missing the red dirt, the ancient rock formations, and the refreshing swims from the best Karijini tour out there!

Note: I was a guest of The Flying Sandgroper for the Old Skool Karijini Tour, but as always, opinions are my own and I won’t recommend anything to you that’s not awesome.

I'm planning a road trip around Australia at the moment so this is super helpful, thanks. I had never heard of it before.

Add it to your itinerary for sure! You'll need a 4WD to visit, or you can park your car and hop in with The Flying Sandgroper!
