Jeff Beck announces mammoth list of US tour dates, including a string of shows with Ann Wilson and ZZ Top

The shows follow the release of Beck’s collaborative album with Johnny Depp, 18, and kick off in Texas on September 23

Jeff Beck 2022 US Tour dates

British guitar legend Jeff Beck has announced a 27-date US tour, beginning September 23 at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater, in Del Valle, Texas.

The first six shows will see Beck share a bill with ZZ Top and, for selected dates, former Heart vocalist Ann Wilson , on a brief jaunt across Texas, Tennessee and Alabama.

Beck will then undertake a solo run beginning October 1 in Atlanta, GA at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre, through to November 12 at the Grand Theatre, Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada.

Reportedly, the bulk of the tour’s setlist is going to focus on Beck’s recent album, 18 (a collaborative project with Johnny Depp), which has given the guitar legend his first top 10 album entry on the Billboard chart.

However, we’re told the guitarist is also promising to pay tribute to friends and influences, alongside some older material, with his interpretations of Mahavishnu Orchestra’s You Know You Know and The Beatles’ A Day in the Life , plus Brush with the Blues all set to make appearances.

Speaking of appearances, we wonder if Depp will be showing up for any of the dates.   Depp previously joined Beck onstage for a number of shows, including a gig in the UK city of Sheffield.

Meanwhile, Beck’s revealed another star collaboration – a guest spot on Ozzy Osbourne track Patient Number 9 , back in June.

Jeff Beck (born June 24, 1944) is a notoriously influential and inspiring English rock guitarist, who has played with the Yardbirds, the The Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice.

Born in the London Borough of Sutton, UK, Beck began his musical excursions singing in his local church choir before learning to play a borrowed guitar and making his instruments. Inspired to play after hearing Les Paul, B.B. King and Steve Cropper, throughout the early ‘60s Beck played in a string of bands including the Rumbles and the Tridents and made his first vinyl appearance as a session guitarist on the Fitz and Startz single “I’m Not Running Away”.

At the request of session man Jimmy Page, The Yardbirds recruited Beck to replace Eric Clapton as lead guitarist, during Beck’s 20-month tenure The Yardbirds recorded the majority of their most popular and revered songs.

After being kicked out of the Yardbirds for rarely showing up and completing a short solo project which resulted in the two solo UK hit singles “Hi Ho Silver Lining” and “Tallyman”, Beck formed the Jeff Beck Group. The Jeff Beck Group temporarily had a line-up of Beck, ex-Shadow man Jet Harris on bass, Rod Stewart on vocals, Ronnie Wood on guitar and Nicky Hopkins on piano. The band’s first release “Truth” (1968) performed significantly better than the second “Beck-Ola” (1969) and resentment ended the band in 1969.

After a serious car accident in 1970 and a failed idea to start a power-trio with Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert, Beck formed a new version of the Jeff Beck Group. The reformation however didn’t cause much of a stir with the albums “Rough and Ready (1971) and “Jeff Beck Group” (1972), and with the the breakup of the band Cactus, Beck, Appice and Bogert formed a power-trio in 1973.

In 1975 after a quiet period for the guitarist, Beck release the instrumental jazz-fusion album “Blow by Blow” which garnered critical acclaim as did his follow-up with Jan Hammer on the 1976 album “Wired”. Releases from Beck after this time appeared fewer and further between with his next release the Jan Hammer-contributed “There and Back” arrived in 1980 after which Beck toured extensively, before retiring again.

Five years later in 1986 Beck released the pop/rock album “Flash” produced by Nile Rodgers. On the album the single “People Get Ready” features vocals from Rod Stewart, as well as featuring the Grammy winning instrumental single “Escape”. Prior to the release of the Grammy award winning “Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas” in 1989, Beck played lead guitar on Mick Jagger’s second solo album “Primitive Cool”.

In 1992 Beck contributed lead guitar on the Roger Water comeback album “Amused to Death” before releasing a tribute album to Gene Vincent entitled “Crazy Legs” in 1993. After a six-year break came “Who Else! You Had It Coming” in 1999, followed by “Jeff” in 2001, the live set “Performing This Week: Live at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club” in 2008, and “Emotion & Commontion” in 2010. The album won two Grammys for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Beck subsequently release a live album titled “Live and Exclusive from the Grammy Museum in 2010, followed by a tribute album to Les Paul entitled “Rock & Roll Party” the same year.

Live reviews

It's just so hard to describe Jeff Beck. You have to see him. Being one of the pioneers of rock, playing with the Yardbirds in the 60's, went from their wailing blues to psychedelic blues as the three (Beck Clapton Page) guitarists divulged into Cream and Led Zeppelin. Jeff evolved into a modern guitar God enigma.

He has smooth riffs, blending into another with complete control of his effects, never using them repeatedly for lack of musicality. His quality of playing is always forefront to the gimmicks. You could give him a cheap guitar and he will sound like Jeff Beck because of his skill of playing.

His "People Get Ready" live instrumental rendition blew me off my seat when He played with Jeff Healy, Stevie Ray Vaughn at the now called Rogers Centre. The fans that had the pleasure to see him at Ronny Scotts are probably still shaking their heads on how he played the strat with slide and whammy harmonics, simultaneously. He will sustain a bend; climaxing in a flurry riff that you would have to play it back slowly to figure out what he was playing.

He has evolved in uncharted territory. He plays with raw, controlled emotion and mastery of his instrument. He can play so soulful (Definitely Maybe - Jeff Beck Group70's), he can make the Strat cry. He once quoted that a lot of good music comes by accident and rarely repeats his riffs, unless they are patented JB riffs. He builds a sculpture, then breaks the mold. He always comes up with something new, keeping you on edge until he pulls it out unexpectedly, like he did with "People Get Ready". He is one of England's National Treasures and I am a very happy man to be a witness to the journey he has taken.

Well to start with, the show for Jeff Beck was very disappointing. Most of his songs were just screaming distorted sounds that sounded the same throughout the entire performance. We mainly purchased tickets to see him on stage with bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, who was not on his show! Instead he had a mediocre bass player who did nothing to add to the songs played. Tal makes Jeff play more melodic with feeling. Even on his ballad song "Cause We Ended As Lovers" had no bass solo, a staple part for Tal in which she steals the song from Jeff.

To make the show even worse than it could ever be, guitarist Buddy Guy performed right after Jeff Beck and all you heard was him saying the "F Bomb" word all night long, so disrespectful to the audience & minors that were present. If Buddy thinks by laying his guitar down while beating it with a towel while it feedsback, he should record himself & see how immature if really is, that's not music, nor beating the guitar strings with a bow. I've seen him 2xs before, and each time he has been intoxicated on stage. The worse was when he put his guitar up in the ceiling rafter while it was

feeding back & he couldn't get it down!! The entire show sucked.

Perhaps one of Britain's most celebrated musicians, guitarist Jeff Beck had the coveted opportunity to play alongside The Yardbirds as well as other iconic performers Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Now performing solo at the grand age of 70, the guitarist has not lost any of his abilities or stage presence.

An eccentric through and through, Beck was born to be onstage and you can understand why he refuses to take early retirement as you listen to the deafening cheers as he steps proudly out to his adoring crowd. Playing a bold cover of Jimi Hendrix's 'Little Wing' he easily demonstrates his masterful abilities and this level of expertise continues throughout the evening. His accompanying musicians are talented within their own rights, but the whole attention is well and truly on Jeff and his guitar. The complexity of 'Big Block' evokes mass cheers from the crowd and as he exits the stage they are left under the impression that Beck will not be hanging up the strings and plectrum anytime soon.

I was glad an excited to see this venue, for two of the finest, at Denver's premier stages outside this summer. Buddy Guy landed his licks, among the crowd when he walked round expressing the sources of bluesdom mixed with rock. His performance was outstanding, loved his Blues, totally.

The Jeff Beck Band was more ,of an up to date format ,moving to the next level of his career. At his age, traveling through his past, didn't seem to slow his performance one bit. His band showed their energy and flowed to us in every song played... moved the lyrics into our brains n out of our tearful eyes. The vocalists (times two) showed how to get it right. My gratitude is heart felt, Thanks to both of you, splendidly.

A terrific show on August 7th, 2016. One that will be talked about, reviewed, over all He is a Rock Legend, true to form.

I've been a jeff beck fan since the mid 60's (yes I'm an old burnout).his playing was as crisp and smooth as it was in 1971,when i last saw him live.his play list was a good representation of his work for the last several years with just enough of his early tunes thrown in to please us older fans.i would strongly recommend younger folks to go and see beck play.remember he came onto the British rock/blues scene with guitarists eric clapton, jimmy page and peter green.

The crowd was of mixed age with plenty of young folks there to check this guy out.from what i saw there were no concert antics like the 70's.my take on this show was time and money well spent. The venue daily's place ampatheatre was a pleasant surprise.thanks songkick i sure could have used you back in the day.you now have a customer for life, great experience.

This was a first class concert. I had not seen Jeff live before but was extremely impressed with the whole package, his playing, the band and the material they played. I was really impressed with the two young girls who were outstanding and the drummer was incredible. I would like to know if the drummer was Simon Phillips who played with him some years back and is, of that standard. All in all a great concert. The band was so surprised to be asked to do an encore that they had not planned for one and took a few minutes to agree on what to play. if he tours again in this country I would go back and see him again.

Great show overall - but a bit short at just over 90 minutes (including an encore). Front of house mix was a bit hit and miss for first 15-20 mins (drums and bass a bit overpowering) but settled down when the male vocalist - who was outstanding- came on. Backing musicians were outstanding and Jeff was in good form with Big Block, Superstition, A Day in the Life and Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers stand outs.

Jeff lets his guitar do the talking but the show would benefit from a few more words from Jeff - he was even quieter than usual but the singer was excellent and helped communication with the audience.

I'm from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, my name is Casimiro Monge...yesterday after 30 or more years wanting to see and listen live this genius of electric guitar, i made it ! something memorable for me, a form of happiness that transcends me, his passion, his taste, his technique, his everything is really great ... for me the least predesible...you do not know what note interpret...today I can say, I will die happy !! Excellent show, great set list, although I would have liked to interpret Blue Wind of his album Wired.

Long live to Jeff Beck!!!

Jeff Beck has 5 decades of music, on Saturday night he played for only 70 minutes. 25 of those minutes we were forced to listen to Johnny Depp sing. It was the worst concert I've ever been to. Compare this concert to Santana a month ago. Santana played for 3.5 hours, tickets were only $35 and when the tickets arrived included was a copy of his latest CD. That was a concert to remember.

Jeff Beck Announces Fall 2022 US Tour

Jeff Beck has announced a fall U.S. tour in support of 18 , his new collaborative album with Johnny Depp . The trek begins on Sept. 23 in Del Valle, Texas, and runs through Nov. 12 in Reno, Nev., with more shows to be announced later.

Beck will be joined by Ann Wilson on the first three dates and ZZ Top on the first six dates.

Tickets go on sale to the public on Friday. You can see the full list of tour dates below.

Beck and Depp were recently accused of stealing the lyrics to their new song "Sad Motherfuckin' Parade" from "Hobo Ben," an old toast — or form of Black folk poetry — delivered by the late Slim Wilson and preserved in Bruce Jackson's 1974 book  Get Your Ass in the Water and Swim Like Me and a 1976 album of the same name.

A spokesperson for the 18  album team told UCR, "We are reviewing the inquiry relating to the song 'Sad Motherfuckin' Parade' on the 18 album by Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp. If appropriate, additional copyright credits will be added to all forms of the album."

Beck also recently contributed a solo to Ozzy Osbourne's " Patient Number 9 ," the title track and lead single off the Prince of Darkness'  new album , which comes out on Sept. 9.

Having cultivated one of the most influential careers in rock history, Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world, and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues and jazz.

Over the course of his distinguished 50-plus-year music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards , been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the "100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time," and been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame twice — once as a member of THE YARDBIRDS and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl.

Beck famously replaced Eric Clapton as THE YARDBIRDS ' lead guitarist in 1965 and later went on to form THE JEFF BECK GROUP , which featured Rod Stewart on vocals and Ron Wood on bass. Their two albums — "Truth" (1968) and "Beck-Ola" (1969) — would become musical touchstones for hard rockers in the years to come.

The constantly evolving Beck 's next move — a power trio with bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice , which released "Beck, Bogert And Appice" (1973),once again shattered people's preconceptions of what a rock guitarist was supposed to sound like.

1985's "Flash" kept Beck in the spotlight as he earned the "Best Rock Instrumental" Grammy for the song "Escape" . A second Grammy came with Jeff Beck 's "Guitar Shop" with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas , and a third for "Dirty Mind" from the "You Had It Coming" album in 2001. 2009 saw the release of the platinum-selling "Performing This Week… Live at Ronnie Scott's" , which earned a Grammy for "A Day In The Life" .

Beck 's astonishing 2010 solo album, "Emotion & Commotion" , brought about two additional Grammy Awards ; Beck was nominated in five categories before bringing home three: "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" for "Hammerhead" and "Best Pop Instrumental Performance" for "Nessun Dorma" , both from "Emotion & Commotion" , and "Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals" for "Imagine" , his collaboration with Herbie Hancock .

His "Rock 'N' Roll Party (Honoring Les Paul)" album was nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award for "Best Rock Album". In 2016 he released "Loud Hailer" and in 2017 "Jeff Beck: Live At The Hollywood Bowl" was released, both to widespread critical acclaim.

Got my tickets before learning that Depp would likely be along and that material might make up half the show. I love Jeff Beck and like Depp in a few movies. But I have no use for celebrities who are questionable musicians /wannabe rockstars. Will likely still go. Beck won’t be touring forever. On the bright side-nice that these tickets were reasonably priced compared to others in 2022.

Jeff Beck Announces Fall 2022 Tour Dates

Jeff Beck Announces Fall 2022 Tour Dates

Today, two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Jeff Beck, announced a forthcoming U.S. fall tour. The run of shows is slated to begin on Sept. 23 in Del Valle, Texas; Beck will be joined on stage for his first six shows by his longtime friends and rock icons, ZZ Top.

After a late-September tour opener, the musician’s run will wrap on Nov. 12 in Reno, Nev., but not before Beck hits numerous hot spot venues, including Atlanta’s Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre, Chicago’s Chicago Theatre and Port Chester, N.Y.’s The Capitol Theatre.

Beck’s forthcoming run supports his latest album, 18 , in collaboration with Johnny Depp, which debuted at #10 on both Billboard’s Top Albums and Top Current Albums. The tour will also explore his legendary career, taking fans through renditions of Beck classics, including “Brush with the Blues” and “A Day in the Life,” coupled with new material.

After bonding over cars and guitars back in 2016, Beck and Depp quickly found themselves as kindred spirits. They agreed to create an album together and began in 2019 and worked for three years, sampling some of Depp’s originals and a mosaic of covers from numerous genres of music. “We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” Beck shared in a press release. He continued, “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”

Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards, been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time," and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice - once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist.

In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl with special guests including Buddy Guy, Steven Tyler, Beth Hart, Billy F. Gibbons and Jan Hammer.

The tour will focus on the new album as well as explore Beck’s legendary career through instrumentals like “You Know You Know,” “A Day in the Life” and “Brush with the Blues.” The tour will include BECK’s current band: bassist Rhonda Smith , drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson.

BECK and DEPP’s 13-track album, 18, debuted at #10 on both the Billboard Top Albums and Top Current Albums charts marking the first top 10 for both Beck and Depp on the 31-year-old Top Album Sales chart. The set is available on CD and digitally, with a 180-gram black vinyl version coming on September 30. The duo recently wrapped a successful European tour together on July 25 in Paris, France to much fan and critical acclaim with sold-out dates throughout northern Europe, Italy and France – including a stop at the revered Montreux Jazz Festival.

Jeff Beck found a kindred spirit in Johnny Depp when the two met in 2016. They bonded quickly over cars and guitars and spent most of their time together trying to make each other laugh. At the same time, Beck’s appreciation grew for Depp’s serious songwriting skills and his ear for music. That talent and their chemistry convinced Beck they should make an album together.

Depp agreed and they started in 2019. Over the next three years, they recorded a mix of Depp originals along with a wide range of covers that touches on everything from Celtic and Motown, to the Beach Boys and Killing Joke. “We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says with a laugh. “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”

Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards, been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. Jeff Beck Announces Massive U.S. Tour, Ann Wilson and ZZ Top to Support

by Jacob Uitti August 19, 2022, 8:40 am

Legendary blues-rock guitarist Jeff Beck has announced an upcoming U.S. tour, which will include support from other big names like Ann Wilson (of Heart) and ZZ Top.

Videos by American Songwriter

The string of 27 dates, which kicks off on September 23 at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater in Del Valle, Texas, follows the release of Beck’s new album, 18 , with actor-musician Johnny Depp.

The Depp-Beck album gave Beck his first top-10 record on the Billboard chart.

The first six shows of Beck’s tour will include support from ZZ Top and upcoming shows in Texas, Tennessee and Alabama will include Wilson.

Reportedly, on tour, Beck will largely focus on the songs from 18 , though he will surely dip into older material, as well. And speculation abounds whether or not Depp will join his musical collaborator on any of the dates. He has recently joined Beck on stage for several shows, including one in the U.K. city of Sheffield.

Beck is also a collaborator on the new Ozzy Osbourne album, Patient Number 9 . Check out the full list of Beck’s tour dates below.

"It's been a rough road. I never got to the point ever where I thought I'd actually achieved anything": An epic Jeff Beck interview

Jeff Beck was the guitar hero everyone admired, yet throughout his career he shunned the limelight more than basked in it

Jeff Beck studio portrait

"The day I get dictated to, I would pack it all in," the late Jeff Beck told Classic Rock in 2006, looking back on a career that had taken him from The Yardbirds to the brink of superstardom, before his preference for unexplored territory took him on a path like no other musician. This interview has never appeared online before.

In 1990 the Observer newspaper polled a number of the world’s top guitarists and asked them who they thought was the best in their profession. The guitar player who came top of the list did so by quite some margin. It was the same guy who Pink Floyd ’s David Gilmour described as “the most consistently brilliant guitarist over the past 25 years”; who Boston ’s Tom Scholz has called “the greatest lead guitar player of all time”; the guitarist that guitarists look up to: Jeff Beck .

At the star-studded Leyendas De La Guitarra Festival in Seville, Spain, in October 1991 – two days of mesmerising performances (or guitar porn, depending on your point of view) from the likes of Steve Vai , Joe Satriani , Brian May, Joe Wash, Paco de Lucia and Phil Manzanera – sitting in the hotel bar on the last evening Satriani gazed into the distance, smiled and mused: “But Jeff Beck – where were you? Jeff should have been here, and he should have played Where Were You , and it would have just floored everybody.”

And he was right. But as delighted (and surprised) as Beck is to be acclaimed and appreciated – and, most importantly, by his peers – it’s not the kind of self-congratulatory notion that is likely to ever enter his head. More self-effacing – seriously self-doubting, even – than one is used to coming across in a music industry increasingly driven more by fame-seeking ego than by talent, you won’t find Beck blowing his trumpet about his guitar playing.

Having started his musical education playing piano, then moved to playing drums along to jazz records, then spent time with a cello between his legs, a short-trousered Jeff Beck eventually found where his musical heart lay one day in 1956 when he went to see the movie The Girl Can’t Help It , and sat in the dark cinema entranced by Little Richard, Gene Vincent and, especially, Vincent’s guitar player Cliff Gallup. The seeds were sown and immediately took root. Beck the guitarist began to grow.

One of the original holy trinity of British guitarists – along with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page – who came through in the 60s (each of whom, amazingly, was at various times in The Yardbirds), at the expense of commercial success Beck has continued to explore new ground while the other two found their niche, dug it ever deeper and continued to mine commercial gold.

More naturally gifted than Clapton, more inspiration-driven than Page, more imaginative than both of them, Beck is a true maverick. Pig-headed, famously moody, doggedly determined, he does what he wants, how he wants, when he wants – if he wants. Clapton sold out, Page burned out; Beck continues to push new buttons and push the envelope, even if he does occasionally go into PowerSave mode, take extended sabbaticals (to build hot-rods, look after stray dogs and enjoy his beautiful gardens and 74-acre spread in Sussex) on a whim and disappear off the radar – sometimes for years at a stretch.

Jeff Beck walking along a cobbled street holding a guitar case

In the post-Yardbirds 60s The Jeff Beck Group’s Truth album provided the touchstone and the blueprint for Jimmy Page to use to fashion Led Zeppelin . In the solo 70s Beck hit a purple patch with the breathtaking Blow By Blow and Wired , a pair of remarkable benchmark jazz-rock fusion albums recorded with Beatles producer George Martin .

In the 80s the guitarist hit his rock peak with There And Back and Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop , both of which brought together dazzling technique, smouldering aggression and heart-melting melodies in virtuoso displays of controlled power and gossamer touch.

In the 90s Beck dug into dance grooves with real aplomb and artistic success, on the album Jeff outdoing the likes of The Prodigy at their own game and repeatedly dealing himself a winning hand with thumping, anvil-heavy beats and fierce, flashing electro rhythms.

But all those are just some of the highlights in a glittering 40-year recording career in which the four-time Grammy-winner has drifted, sometimes by design, between the public spotlight and the shadows, but all the while maintaining a constant presence in the eyes of those who know.

He was on the shortlist (along with Rory Gallagher , Mick Ronson , Harvey Mandel and Ron Wood) to join The Rolling Stones when Mick Taylor quit the band in December 1974, but tore up his jackpot-winning Lottery ticket. (“I mean, the money was tempting. But I would have been half-dead, and my reputation would have been shot.” According to legend, following the auditions in Rotterdam Beck’s parting shot to Mick and Keith was: “Call me when you’ve got a rhythm section.”)

Beck is the man that Roger Waters , Jon Bon Jovi, Duff McKagan, Paul Rodgers , Stanley Clarke, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Brian May and Sir George Martin, among others, pick up the phone and call when they need a guitar player to sprinkle some fretted fairydust on their albums. Jeff Beck is, after all, officially the greatest living guitar player.

Alt

Stylistically, you’ve moved around a lot over the years, taking in rock, blues, jazz, electronica and whatever else. That’s probably been great for you, but has it confused your audience?

Yeah. I hope it did, ha ha. I dunno. I just can’t see having a jigsaw-puzzle career in which everything slots in and has a meaning. My tastes change, my diet changes, I do things to my cars that I never dreamed I’d do – one minute this colour, the next another colour; no fenders, then they have got fenders. Life changes, doesn’t it?

It looked for a time, with some of the stuff on albums like Jeff , that you had decided to head off along the techno route and into the world of dance grooves.

If we’d had a hit with the dance thing… I wanted to embrace the dance groove with listenable music, in terms of Rollin’ And Tumblin’ . And if that had made any impression, then I would have gone on that route and we’d have had a different audience. But it didn’t get an outlet. A club in Florida or Germany or London playing it once isn’t going to get it.

You’ve got to be like Paul Oakenfold and people like that. The dance crowd wouldn’t get to hear it because of my name; they’d just think The Yardbirds or whatever. How the hell would we ever get the publicity to override that, to put that record straight? You’ve got to do something sensational, like chop down a speed camera or something [laughs]. We did think of putting it out under a different name, but…

Do you genuinely think that not many people are interested in what you’re doing or in coming to see you play?

I haven’t nurtured a career here [the UK], I think that’s what it is. It’s all my fault. I mean, I turned my back on the austerity of England. And who wouldn’t, you know, when you come from the sort of place that I did, and you see LA for the first time and a whole new world of opportunity? Also, there were no real offers of substantial money to keep the band going. If you could see the accounts from the Rod Stewart band [the Stewart-era Jeff Beck Group in the 60s], there’s a very good comedy script there. It was just pathetic

There have often been long gaps between your UK tours, notably one from 1980 to 1990’s Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop tour, although you did release the Flash album in between.

The 80s weren’t my time. I liked Prince and ZZ Top’s Eliminator and that was about it. I wasn’t going to try to sell anything about me, whether it was old, new, or surreal, tomorrowland music, because it was hopeless. The whole musical playground was a joke. The record label execs were more important than the acts; even the bloody retailers were snorting coke and telling you how to play guitar. Bollocks to that.

Effectively sitting out the 80s – even if it was by default – may have turned out to be a good career move, even if it didn’t seem like it at the time.

Yeah, I kept out of the way. And I think there will be a time soon when I’ll have to pull hard, you know. And that will mean a proper album – a seriously good album to let them know I’m about

Jeff Beck scratching his head and smiling (studio portrait)

In 1990, in a poll of celebrity guitarists by the Observer newspaper, you were voted the greatest living guitarist – by some margin. David Gilmour of Pink Floyd has called you “the most consistently brilliant guitarist over the past 25 years”. What do you make of that?

Those sort of remarks are what keeps me going, really. Brian May , who is just an incredible technician and a masterful recording artist – the things he’s said about me. I don’t really care who trashes me in the papers, people with less qualifications, it just goes over straight my head now. I’ve got a letter from Charlie Mingus [whose Goodbye Pork Pie Hat Beck covered to stunning effect on Wired], from when he was just about suicidal, I guess, saying he loved the way I played. I’ve still got that letter. If anybody gives me shit I just hold that letter up.

You tour sporadically, you record when you feel like it. Over many, many years you’ve renovated a beautiful old house; you’re a keen and knowledgable gardener; you’re well-known for rebuilding hot-rods. Whereas most musicians seem to fit their downtime life into their career, there seems to be a sense in which you fit your career into the other part of your life.

It’s just the way it is. I suppose [co-managers] Ralph Baker and Ernest Chapman could lay claim to my longevity being due purely to their prowess as management, in the discreet way they’ve kept me out of the limelight [laughs]. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if they laid claim to that. But I tell you, I’d much rather be working and having fun on stage. But there is some wisdom in not going out and flogging yourself to death, you know. I mean, I want to be me; I don’t want to be anything else. It would be great to have financial security, but what does it mean? Just keep happy and healthy, and keep out of the way and don’t piss people off.

You have often been called – in a complimentary way – a maverick. Are you happy with that?

Suits me. The day when I get dictated to as to what I can and can’t do, I would pack it all in and play just for my own enjoyment.

If you could have recorded only one of your albums, which one would it be?

I don’t know. Why do you bastards think of such awkward questions? To narrow albums down to one is so senseless. They all suck.

Given all the reformations these days, how would you feel about putting The Jeff Beck Group back together, even for just a handful of shows?

Nah. I’m not secure enough to do that. I think that would send out wrong signals. The fact that I would have time to do that would mean that all else musically had failed, in a way. We skirted that a little bit. We got close when I went up to play with Rod on one of his shows. We rehearsed, and I could clearly see that it was going to be a major train wreck. For one thing he wanted to sing People Get Ready , which is in the key of D. I’d worked out this fantastic intro, but he couldn’t sing it in D, it was in C. So that intro went out the window.

Ronnie was on bass – six-string bass! Couldn’t hear the drummer because he was in a glass cabinet – sealed off with cement, y’know – so there was no chance of hearing any cymbals. And I thought, no, I can’t put these deaf-aids in my ears and pull off a proper performance. That was me, Rod, Ronnie and Rod’s drummer, so it wasn’t an acid test of whether that band [The Jeff Beck Group] would survive or be a viable proposition. But it was close enough for me to not want to do it [laughs].

You haven’t kept together any of the line-ups you had for any real length of time. What are you like as a band leader?

Terrible. Fucking world’s worst. I never like to offend anybody, and I never want to undermine their confidence. And I suppose you can say it works for me, even though I’m probably not getting even a fraction of what I could get out of the band if I was a complete bossy bastard. But don’t get me wrong, I won’t put up with things that are wrong. I won’t let that go. And if I firmly believe that what I’m doing is right – like choice of songs, placement, artistic stuff like that – then I’ll do it. I may be off-kilter sometimes, but normally I can feel what an audience expects; I can read an audience. And I’m the one out front and listening to the response. And it’s my name on the tickets and on the records.

What was life like in The Yardbirds?

It was alright. I was like a kid in a candy store for about a year. I mean, I got my red carpet right from the beginning. I got a guitar – I didn’t even own a guitar when I joined The Yardbirds, I borrowed Eric’s, I think. Then I bought an Esquire off John Walker from The Walker Brothers quite early on. Then I made some money and I bought a Les Paul. I haven’t played a Gibson for years. Too heavy. I’ll leave Gibsons to Slash and Jimmy Page.

The Yardbirds’ ex-manager, Simon Napier Bell, said in his hilarious book You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me that The Yardbirds were a right miserable bunch.

Well, when he came along we were, because we didn’t know where we were going. Giorgio Gomelsky [early manager] had failed, and nobody knew where the money went. That didn’t make any difference to me, because they only paid me 20 quid a week anyway.

And I kept getting ill all the time. I was genuinely sick. But because I’d swung the lead before, pretending to be ill, when I really did get ill they didn’t believe it. And I got kicked out. That was a terrible blow. I didn’t really want to carry on, but I didn’t have anything else to do. And then with my last-ditch attempt to put my life back together I got Rod. It [The Jeff Beck Group] was a ground-breaking band.

Does the old chestnut of The Jeff Beck Group’s debut album, Truth, effectively being used by Jimmy Page as the blueprint for Led Zeppelin still rankle?

No. That’s what happened. It’s water under the bridge now. Who cares, anyway? Nobody really cares. The Zeppelin fans don’t want to hear anything to spoil their life-long belief that they are the greatest band ever, you know.

Did that prevent you from being a fan of Zeppelin in some ways?

Yeah, it did. Not only that. I’d just had the Devil’s own job thinking what I was gonna do, and that added to the frustration of not being armed and ready. I was ready mentally to play and blow everybody away, but I didn’t have a bass player or drummer.

Do you still keep in touch Page and Clapton?

No. I see Eric from time to time, but very rarely.

How do you look back on BBA, when you finally managed to get together with the rhythm section of Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice?

We were really good, the three of us. Unfortunately, it was too much like a very commercial version of Cream , with songs. There’s nothing quite like a power trio. You don’t have any chords backing the solos, you’ve just got the drum groove and the bass going. Fantastic. Look at Hendrix – he didn’t do bad, did he?

You’ve had a long and varied career so far, doubtless filled with memories both good and bad.

It’s been a rough road. I never got to the point ever where I thought I’d actually achieved anything. Which I suppose is why when George Martin agreed to do the two albums [ Blow By Blow and Wired , ’75 and ’76] I took that very seriously, because he’s such a genius. I think if I look back over 30 years, you would have to say that George was the one who actually recognised my potential and put it on record better than anybody else has. Unfortunately I wasn’t about to be stuck in a rut with George. I didn’t feel that happening, but I wanted to move on with Jan [Hammer, keyboard player], and make sure it didn’t happen. Comfy shoes was not something I wanted.

Are there any career decisions that you wish you could go back and change?

All of them [laughs]. I think – and without decrying anything about the players – it would be the Cozy band [the Mk II version of The Jeff Beck group, with Cozy Powell on drums]. That was a mistake. I was just recovering from a car crash. It wasn’t severe, no brain damage or anything, and I wasn’t incapacitated for more than about three months, but going back into a room full of people playing loud noises was a horrible experience. And I never realised I was being coerced into playing songs that I wouldn’t be looking at normally. I just wish that album [ Rough & Ready , 1971] would go away. Awful. But people still bring out the bloody thing on CD and reissues and bootlegs.

When did you really start to find a direction again?

When I started taking myself a bit more seriously. About 1973. I realised that I could lose what I’d got, to the point where I don’t make anything substantial to keep me going. I turned up at George Martin’s office with a diabolically bad demo, but he could see there was something there.

What kind of music do you listen to now?

Lots of stuff. I try to listen to the radio, but it’s impossible. I can’t bear the sound of their voices, never mind the music they play. And anyone who talks over a record should be shot. They keep interrupting, and fading the song and talking some gibberish, and it’s insulting in the extreme. I’m out gunning for those bastards [laughs].

I see the whole musical world and general public life as a big circus that I’m not involved in – thank God. Somebody tried to put me down once by saying: “Jeff was the leader of the parade once, and now he seems to be content to watch it go by.” I wote back and said: “You got that spot-on. I’m absolutely happy to watch it go by.”

Did you go to see any of the Cream reunion shows at the Albert Hall last year?

No. They had the good sense not to put me on the guest list. But I did go to the party. Fantastic! I’d go to see Prince again though. And Robert Plant was good recently.

Can you think of two or three albums that will always be in your Top 20?

All of Django’s [Reinhardt, guitarist] works. I dunno, er… Oh, Billy Cobham’s Spectrum . That’s a real milestone album. Mahavishnu Orchestra ’s Birds Of Fire , and From Nothingness To Eternity , live, is a fantastic album. That’s the Central Park gig that they did.

Are there any new bands or new instrumentalists who have impressed you?

Well, I like the way Robert Randolph plays. He’s a lap steel player. He’s wicked; real raving blues stuff on lap steel. But there’s not much at all, really. I listen to Asian dub stuff. I used to listen a lot to an Asian station called Sunrise Radio, but it’s got a bit bland now. About five or six years ago they were playing really ground-breaking stuff; fantastic traditional Indian stuff. The grooves were there, really danceable. It was like the Chemical Brothers meets… all kinds of stuff going on. But now it’s sort of Westernised, very samey stuff. There’s a couple of Asian stations that I listen to just to get away from the unbearable blandness and phoniness of all the other stations.

You’re very much an inspirational player; nine out of 10 of your gigs might be good, but then one will, for whatever reasons, be exceptional. What makes the difference?

Tiredness, sound problems, it’s a combination of things. Sometimes just the spatial disorientation of being out on the road will prevent the ultimate performance. And then when it all clicks together and you’re feeling great and the sound’s great… It’s the sound that drives me. From first go, when you count off, I know exactly where it is.

Are those nights, when it all falls into place and you’re really on one and absolutely nail it, that makes it all worthwhile?

Oh yeah. And you know when you’ve done it. The feeling you get when you know you’ve flattened the place… You almost feel guilty.

Does it get increasingly difficult to dig deep and bring out whatever it is that enables you to really deliver night after night?

Not really. The thing is, the reason we’ve got these songs in the set list is because they are demanding, and people see the effort and the skill that goes into playing them.

What do you get from playing live?

Time speeds up, that’s one thing. The hour-and-a-half is like 15 minutes. Time goes by mighty quick when you’re in danger. You’re in constant danger on stage. There’s a certain amount of seat-of-the-pants risk all the time. And apart from driving hot-rods with dodgy brakes there’s no other thrill like it [laughs].

This business is flooded with rubbish and wannabes, because it’s a great place to be. It’s the best job you can have. No wonder there are millions of people wanting to be in it. So much of it is just about celebrity. You get people outside radio stations asking: “Are you famous, mate? Can I have your autograph?” If they have to ask, you’re not famous, are you?!

Russia City Breaks

Experience some of the world's most exciting cities on our guided tours of Moscow and St Petersburg. Moscow is an endlessly fascinating metropolis and a must-visit for anyone who loves the bustle of city life. It’s chaotic, diverse, enigmatic and constantly changing, with something to suit virtually any traveller’s tastes. As the scene of so many world-changing events throughout the ages, one day in Moscow is never enough in this captivating, confounding capital of contradictions.

A full-throttle city, any trip to Moscow is guaranteed to be thrilling and unique, but the most popular destination in Russia is Saint Petersburg , known as the country’s cultural capital. Great artists have flocked here for centuries, shaping the city’s sophisticated, distinctly European air. The ornate splendour of St Petersburg’s architecture has given rise to its reputation as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

Moscow and St Petersburg Holiday Highlights

  • Join a dedicated arts, history and culture tour of Moscow. Uncover the revolutionary tales behind many of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
  • First time in Moscow? In just three days on a privately guided Moscow city tour, you can visit the legendary Red Square, St Basil’s Cathedral, the Kremlin, Arbat Street and much more.
  • Tailor your free time in Moscow to suit your interests. Follow the Soviet trail to Stalin’s Bunker, or try luxury vodka tasting at Cristall Vodka Museum.
  • Discover the cosmopolitan soul of St Petersburg on a guided walking tour to Nevsky Prospekt (the city’s high street), St Isaac’s Cathedral and Peter and Paul Fortress.
  • Lose yourself in the grand halls of St Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum, home to around three million priceless works including paintings, sculptures and ancient artefacts.
  • Enjoy an elegant night out at the Russian ballet or opera. There’s the legendary Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, while St Petersburg is home to the renowned Mariinsky Theatre and Mikhailovsky Theatre.

If you can’t decide which Russian city to visit, why not see both? The high-speed Sapsan train takes just four hours to cover the 630km city-to-city journey and is our transport of choice for our combined Moscow and St Petersburg tours.

Only have time for one and not sure which city in Russia to choose? Both have absolutely stunning architecture in spades, but Moscow’s history runs far deeper. The city was founded in 1147, 400 years before it became the capital of the Tsarist Empire. The world-famous Kremlin is located in Moscow in the Red Square, along with St Basil’s Cathedral. Meanwhile, the grand palaces, monuments and cathedrals of St Petersburg’s World Heritage-listed historic city centre can be explored by boat on the city’s network of canals. St Petersburg is home to around five million residents, while the population of the greater Moscow Metropolitan Area is estimated at at least 20 million! Losing yourself (both figuratively and literally - although thank goodness for tour guides!) in the world’s largest megacities is an experience never to be forgotten. Love the nightlife? Moscow is party central, while St Petersburg makes up for its more subdued clubbing scene with a proliferation of live music venues and small bars.

Twin cities rocker brian setzer to reunite with stray cats in 2024, including two minnesota dates.

After a lengthy hiatus that found him struggling with tinnitus and sticking to his suburban Twin Cities home, rockabilly stalwart Brian Setzer will return to the road in a big and loud way in 2024 on a reunion tour with his globally renowned '80s band the Stray Cats.

Setzer and original bandmates Slim Jim Phantom and Lee Rocker — childhood friends from Massapequa, N.Y. — will play their first shows together in five years starting in late July on a tour that includes two outdoor dates in Minnesota.

The "Rock This Town" and "Stray Cat Strut" hitmakers are set to play Bluestem Center for the Arts Amphitheater in Moorhead on Aug. 8 , followed by a gig near St. Cloud at the Ledge Amphitheater on Aug. 9 . Tickets for both shows go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at prices not yet announced, with presale options beginning Wednesday.

A Minnesota resident for around two decades now — his wife Julie Reiten Setzer grew up here — Setzer sidelined his usual holiday tour with the Brian Setzer Orchestra in 2019 after being hit with tinnitus following the Stray Cats' 40th anniversary run earlier that year. He took a first step back to touring last year with a new rockabilly trio supporting his solo album, "The Devil Always Collects."

In a statement released with the Stray Cats tour announcement, Setzer said of his old bandmates, "I've always said that we all grew up in the same neighborhood, so there's an instant feeling between us when we play. It allows us to be confident and spontaneous. Man, that's priceless."

Chris Riemenschneider has been covering the Twin Cities music scene since 2001, long enough for Prince to shout him out during "Play That Funky Music (White Boy)." The St. Paul native authored the book "First Avenue: Minnesota's Mainroom" and previously worked as a music critic at the Austin American-Statesman in Texas.
